"An investor's specific needs. Change with time. Learn more at Schwab dot com slash plan. And the listeners and supporters of KQED Public Radio. Good morning the time now. 6 22 It's Morning edition on KQED. I'm Brian. What? We're continuing our series saved by fire this morning and going back to Shaver Lake about an hour and a half south of Yosemite. Outside of Bob's market in Shaver Lake is a sign that reads. Thank you, Creek Fire heroes, and it shows a group of firefighters. This mountain town of 500 people is peppered with Thank you signs, an island of green, surrounded by charred hills with trees burned down to Stubbs. KQED science reporter Danielle Benton tells US firefighters wouldn't have been able to save the town without another team of people who worked very closely together over years. The creek Fire started on Labor Day weekend, September 4th after a hot, dry summer. All it took was a spark in a steep, overgrown canyon. Having a fire in this canyon was kind of a nightmare. You look at it, Ugo. I don't know how they're going to stop that fire. Brian Stewart is a Forrester for seven California Edison. The utility holds a lot of property to the south of that canyon around Shaver Lake. He's prepared this land for fire, and I was kind of just thinking in the back of my mind. I wonder what they're doing over there because I got it over here. But over there is a different story over there is the area around Big Creek near the canyon. Over here is the forest where Stuart and others have done treatments for years, cutting crowded and dead trees, clearing brush and lighting prescribed fires. And so I knew where the fire was. And so I knew that. Okay, well, We've got a good chance of stopping it. Once he gets on Edison land, I could see it. And that was a clue to me that it has the potential becoming major fire around midnight, Assistant Fire Chief Jim McDougal began driving toward the fire. He called Ryan Stewart. Sure enough around two in the morning, I got a phone call. From Jim McDougald with Cal fire and he's like it's gone up the hill, and it's headed towards Addison property. Mickey would wanted to try to stop the fire on Edison's treated land. The best tool at that time was try to get dozers in there and open up some of the fuel breaks. Stewart arrived in the dead of night and began tying pink flags to trees marking where to widen firebreaks. He took me there on a hike in the air was thin. You think we're breathing heavy? I was running. I ran that little loop right there. Stewart wanted to catch up with crews already on site and didn't want to get caught in the fire, but also the fires. Didn't feel like I should be. There came up here and then I flagged in this little line, and that line is where crews held it. In the early morning hours. The intensity of the fire was Reduced to a ground fire. And get with the crowns and killing the trees Looks pretty good. It's actually pretty much controlled. Burn. Miss stopped one flank of the fire, McDougald says, and bought time to complete evacuations and prepare to defend Shaver Lake. No question about it. That worked, but the direct impact of the fire hitting shaver At least 24 to 48 hours. Instead, the fire spread in other directions. That meant many agencies had to pay attention. The high Sierra Ranger district C national Forest and the President King's Cal Fire unit. Southern California Edison Clint Way, there's a fuel specialist at the U. S. Forest Service. As the creek fire surged West McDougald needed someone who knew how the fuel brakes ran. National forest called wade Off a fire near the coast. Jim made a special request like Hey, we need point back. He understands this fuel brake system. Wade at the Forest Service and MacDougal to Cal Fire had worked together on the fuel breaks in this basin. Regardless of whether the land was federal, state or private. In this area, private in holdings punctuate the national forest. You know, the four service doesn't treat private land typically Cal fire came to us and, hey, we We have some money. Where do you have holes when we got out the maps and hey, yo twin, Brooks has got some patches. Can we glue that together? You know there's stuff over here off the backside of Christmases patches. Let's glue that together. We started designing projects. Some of these fuel breaks and controlled burns were funded by a state mandate. In 2019 Governor Newsome issued an executive.

"Burcin homework reasons. Virtue will class teacher birch flu posters. That was zouk and lack from a city called songs about virtual school before the break. You heard virtual school done by marsha. And the positron. You're listening to the children's hour. I'm katie stone and the kids are with us on zoom. We're finishing up a conversation with new mexico public education department secretary dr ryan stewart and coming up. We're about to speak with dr. Anthony vouch -i the kids have just a couple more questions for you. Dr stewart my phone your next. So this year lots of kids have had to spend lots of time online and very little increase in with their teachers breads. Do you think that this is affected student's abilities to learn in one sense. I think a lot of students learning online all the time not have the ability to come in has been tough. It's not the way that they learn best and so there definitely been a may students who have struggled with. I also think that a lot of students have made some pretty remarkable adjustments to be able to to keep the process going things like a learning how to do things more independently A lot of students who have found more resources to connect them so they have questions they're more able to find their answer online and get those answered quickly when they normally would have kind of been waiting for the teacher and so i think there's a different skills that a lot of students have had had to unlock which is good in will serve as well when we get back but certainly it's been a struggle for a good number of students and Which is why. We're pushing so hard to get people to follow all of our covid safe practices get. Our virus counts down. We're excited about the potential for back scenes. 'cause all of it helps us get back to in person learning more quickly. My mom is a teenager. When we'll get the vaccine will tissues get the vaccine so this is something that it's going to be decided a little bit differently in every state we've been looking at where teachers falling that order and so is your mom or a teacher here to mexico We are still in the process of of putting together exactly when that will happen and he noted it depends a lot on. It depends a lot on how quickly we can get the supply of vaccines into the state. Because right now we don't have enough to vaccinate everybody and so that's why we have to make some priorities and start with the people working in hospitals and the elderly. A teachers are going to be right. Up there as well catch ball representation in decision-making do we have if any. That's a fantastic question. Let me give you a quick example. I was just in a couple of meetings with a student at One of our high schools here in albuquerque. She had reached out to me and said hey you know what i think. New mexico would be a really well done if they put in a law to allow for mental health days at schools so she reached out to me said. Can we have a conversation about it. I said sure. I'd love to hear your thoughts and she was really really well researched and had a a great plan had looked at where this law had been passed in other states She ends so we connected with some other local elected officials they were interested in sponsoring that bill and getting that law passed and we've had conversations with her and the secretary and some other states where they've done this work and you know we're still we're we're looking at moving that bill forward into the legislature for this session so that may become a law as may become law because that student had idea researched it reached out and said hey what do you think so i would just say that as lesson to everybody Reach out to your legislators reach out to your elected officials appointed officials. We're here to try to help. End try to solve problems and create new ideas and the best ideas often come from the people who are affected by the issue so Don't think that that Just because you're you're still in school that you that you can't do that. Make a difference. Dr ryan stewart. Thank you very much for being with us on the children's hour. Thank you so much for having me guys. This is the best part of my day I hope that you have a wonderful wonderful rest of this semester. And i look forward to seeing you. All in classrooms. To dr ryan stewart. Is the secretary of education in the new mexico public education department. He was appointed for that secretary position by new mexico governor michelle luhan grisham and he is the first african american to serve as the state's chief state school officer coming up. "That's wendy and db from twenty twenty single release mask up. Well we're thinking about masking up and school because it's school time and kids on our crew go to school in lots of different ways. We've got kids who are home schoolers kids who are in private schools. That are in person all the time kids who are in public school who are sometimes in person and sometimes at home and then we have kids who are in school. Who are at home all the time right now. Because of the pandemic we live in the state of new mexico and the pandemic is still spreading here. Although it's getting better our secretary for the public education department is the man responsible for making a lot of these tough decisions about what to do about school. We are delighted to welcome to the children's hour. The new mexico public education department secretary. Dr ryan stewart. Welcome to the children's hour dr stewart. Thank you for having me this. This is great. The kids have a lot of questions for you. Let's start with you illuminata. What does the department of education secretary do. That is a great question aluminum. Thanks for asking it. I've learned a lot about what that actually means. Since i've taken on this job things. I had no idea that we do so just to give you a quick overview Secretary of education. We're in charge of all the rules. The regulations and the policies about your schools during covid. That's super important. Because that means we have to make some decisions sometimes some really tough and decisions about learning time. And what's safe and if you have to wear a mask and things like that so so we have to deal with a lot of those rules. Regulations we work with all of your elected officials in the governor to talk about laws about schools and then we a really important thing to make sure that we advocate for the money that schools need to be able to give you and all of your friends a really good education. How'd you make your decisions. Secretaries have to make a lot of really hard decisions because when you make them you can't make everybody happy Some people will like them. Some people won't so what i try to do. Is i try to be really clear on what it is. I want to accomplish in what i believe. So i believe that every single kid including every single click in this room is capable of learning and capable of being really really excellent students. And i believe that we should make sure that you have everything you need to participate successfully in education and that there aren't things like Healthcare and food access that are that are stopping you from being able to learn and so yet to be really clear about what you want to accomplish in what you believe in and then you make your decisions based on those things so powered decisions made when it comes to when it's safe for kids to go back to school on different places us so this has been fascinating because we have not had to deal with a pandemic like this like no one alive really has had to deal with with this kind of Emergency so there's no playbook nobody nobody. I can't just go and say turn to page five. This is what you do so we have to do. Is we have to work with all of the scientists who study pandemics and the field of epidemiology. We have to work with him every day. And we have to look at all of the data that we can And try to make the best decision to keep people safe and it's really tough right now because we have to balance things like wanna keep everybody safe but we want you to be able to go to school and be with your teachers and be with your friends And we want you to be able to do things in society like you normally would and we can't do all of those things necessarily all at the same time so different people are going to make different choices And like i said earlier not everyone's gonna like all of the choices that get made. Some people like him a lot. Some people don't like a lot. You have to be really clear again about what is that. You're that you're prioritizing and for us here in new mexico. We prioritize making sure that we stop the spread of the virus as much as we possibly can which means we have to make some tough decisions about how much time are kids can spend in school and who can go and and who has to be in remote learning So these are really really hard hard decisions. Why can't we just have a do over year. So what one of the things about this year. I know that even as it's been tough and hopefully you guys have all felt this. Your teachers your your support staff at your school has been working really really hard to try to make the best of what's been a tough situation having to learn remotely. Hopefully maya you still learned Even if it's not the same a a good amount here in this year And we want to be able to to take that forward and we know that your growing your growth development doesn't stop when you go into next year they're still gonna be things that you take from this year and some of the things. I hope that you really take our independence. Guys have had to learn how to do things a lot more independently on your own this year. Yeah so we hope that you take a lot of that. Forward maya into your next year yet. There may be some people who choose to repeat a great because they need some extra support We respect those those decisions. But i think for the vast majority of people. You're gonna have great opportunities going forward and your schools work really hard to make sure that anything that you've missed that you get the opportunity to catch up on. We've got a lot of work to do. i don't wanna be. I don't wanna be sugar coating. This has been a tough year. We've got a lot of work to do to make sure that we stay on track. Are there any plans to help people with no devices or internet connection at home like. How does that work isaac. You're asking probably one of the biggest questions that we've had to try to problem solve around in secretaries all over the country this has been one of the biggest issues. So what we've done here new mexico we've put millions upon millions of dollars into buying new devices and getting people connected to the internet One of the biggest challenges that we've got there is. We got a lot of kids who live in very rural communities where they don't have broadband high speed internet connection so we've had a lot of resources into getting those students connected and that's one of the biggest challenges that we've got Another thing about it. When every single person in the world every single student in the world school district in the world tries to buy a whole bunch of chromebooks laptops in hot spots at the same time. Not everyone can just go to the local store and do that so there has been a global shortage of these devices. And so that's been really tough to 'cause sometimes people ordered devices in april and still have gotten. We're committed. I think around the country. This pandemic has shown we've got a solve the digital divide which means This is going to be really critical for education going forward. every kid's gonna need devices and connectivity. It's going to require a whole lot of investment from states from the federal government to question. And when you're talking about the digital divide you are talking about how people with wealth and a lot of income can always afford internet and devices but people who do not have those things who are economically disadvantaged or even live in rural and remote places and are sort of low key shauwie disadvantaged from having access to the internet and devices it makes it divide in our society in our culture where some people have access to educational tools and some people do not and that is unfair and that digital divide is what you mean by that. You're listening to the children's hour. We are talking with. Dr ryan stewart. He is the secretary of the new mexico department of public education. And we've.

"Miss Cavender, Mr. Hippel, Thank you for for letting me pop in and Be a part of your classroom for a minute and talk to your students that I just can't say enough. How much energy effort thought Planning has gone into taking what we had to do very quickly in the spring. And I'm putting more systems in place for the for the fall, And now that we're here so that we're able to, even though it's not perfect, be able to continue providing continuity of education. We've heard loud and clear that that significant challenges still remain significant challenges around broadband infrastructure and connectivity. Weaken our district are working, and we continue to work to find those individuals who have not yet. Been connected to do not yet have device to make sure that we that we that we get the get those students and those families the support that they need to participate successfully in the remote programs. But we also know that we're excited that the efforts of new Mexicans and all of the hard work that has gone in the sacrifice that has gone into containing the virus. Bringing our case counts down are getting us now to the point where we can slowly start phasing back in in person learning. So if you can actually let me talk a little bit about the the last bullet on here, which is around the safety and support plans that we have in place. So as we get closer, we know that there is a significant amount of questions and anxiety from from parents from students from educators around. Does my school have the systems in place to make sure that my safety will be attended to and that we will be adhering to the requirements for social distancing face coverings and other enhanced safety procedures? That we've outlined in our school, reentry gains and so across the state We're making sure that every single school is going to have the masks that are needed is going to have the cleaning supplies that are needed the cleaning procedures that are needed and the rapid response protocols and contact people that are needed. In order to make sure that before they open those things are solid. They are in place. And and all of the individuals in that school can come with confidence, knowing that that those provisions around their safety have been very closely monitored and attended to, and I was. I was very pleased to see in my visits. The the care and attention that are superintendents and our administrators and are Our teacher leaders and our custodial staff are food service workers and everybody else who's had a hand in this have put into making sure that these systems are in place to be able to welcome folks back. I just want to reassure everyone that the public Education Department takes that responsibility very seriously that those those conditions are in place before students step on. If you could go to next life, please. So doctors Grace showed this slide a little bit earlier, and I'll talk a little bit more about it. Here is well when we look across the state at where our counties are, in terms of those tests, positivity rates and those new daily case rates. We know that in the Southeast Way certainly have hot spot and certainly in Hidalgo County in the southwest. But the vast majority of our state is in the green zone, which is great because we need to be able to say that to every educator, every student Who comes in that we've We've only opening schools when we've gotten to the point where we got to step away for a second, But 48 minutes after three o'clock, take a few minutes for break here and come back with Secretary Ryan Stewart and the governor and probably doctors, Grace talking about the changing of the cove ID in the health rules and the parameters around all of that will do that when we come back, 48 minutes after three I.

"The agreement today between public schools and N'Diaye Santa Fe, You're any ain't in Mexico. How do you mean? When you look around the mesa go? How do you Ah, How do you plan or or prepare policy for school district from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. To tow Hacha Lee to gel till I mean to the teo Hey, mus to these really small district because they're not comparable. Right. So there has to be many. Ah, parts of the public Education department's plans that are to be interpreted locally, Okay? And there are there are and local school boards that are elected in New Mexico. They Good and they do have the authority to govern major decisions that Ah Super, a school superintendent would You know, enter into with the public Ed department and and that's what we see. Happening in Las Cruces Published will bust I. The School board voted unanimously to open schools remotely, and that is In an environment where the public a department at this moment He is saying that we're going to start hybrid. So that puts the superintendent in kind of Ah, strange spot because you know they have to do what their their board tells them, But they also have They're beholden to the public Ed department and and also, we just haven't received the funding, which is just a big issue, so it's not really Status to it's not a local school district issue. It's that to keep people safe and operate and open our schools as everybody wants to do. It's going to cost money. And we don't have money. We'll get to that. And I say we don't have money. Ah, we had caused education. So let me get this straight. So Santa Santa Fe public schools any a Santa Fe came to an agreement today to start school on August 20. They'll go to the board tomorrow we'll have on board President K. Noble on Friday, one o'clock. I'll go to the board tomorrow if they send it to P E. D, as cruises did as West Las Vegas did, as Los Alamos did, and said it will be strictly remote learning. In Santa Fe until the 20th. They're starting on the 20 for least nine weeks. Is there a chance? The P D says no. I mean, they they wouldn't would they wouldn't force the school district. Yeah, I think they could, because the CDI has a lot of power. And we saw that under the previous I'm gonna call him regime when they threatened to take over large cruises, public schools, you know that was Hanna Scan Darren Susanna Martinez. Yes. So it was a different outfit. In this public. A department with under the leadership of Ryan Stewart is is not a co worse like we're going to beat you until the attitude's improved China about a public ad department but But they do want You know, they want kids back in school and kids, one of you back in school, and their many parents want kids back in school. There's you know, different stakeholder groups. But at the end of the day, we have to demonstrate that we can keep everybody safe and and that I don't think has been demonstrated. To the level that it needs to be All right. So merry part. Sanchez's organs president any in New Mexico. Do you have the power? Do you have the power to say now? Is the union have the power to say no, not going to do it? We will strike. We will do whatever to keep art. Keep our employees are members safe. I think we have a safety and the safety of of kids and our staff is the number one most important thing. And the number two coming right in after that is isn't for them to keep their employment because we know That's also another issue. So so hopefully we don't have to make a false choice. Like where is economic, security or health security? You know, hopefully we can we can get to where we need to be and do what's right through, you know, conversation and problem solving and and just getting the state to the point that it contest people in a rapid way, and that there is a real partnership between the Department of Health and the school system. To where we can You know, we can move forward with kids being in school because we all want that. Is that a lot better are marginally better or not better at all. With Ryan Stewart and and Michelle Luan Grisham than it was with Hanna scanned era and Susanna Martinez is a more open, more dialogue or you listen to or you invited in as a partner. It's it's night and day difference. Okay? And and yet they still have. You know, they still have a lot of pressure too Coarse, you know, for outcome than all of that. But yes, they are partners. We are partners and we're trying to work together. And and that's what we would also advise District like it really should be District working with their staff, trying to negotiate and navigate some of these really tough issues, and like a district in Los Cruces, where the Kobe cases are exploding. You're going to have to look for in. We already county where they're going up with a data Benaglio County. It's a you know there is of CDC guidelines that the pet is relying Upon for the safe opening. I I was told hasn't been officially but I was told that burn little County is officially a hot spots, but I haven't heard that of, you know, in any official way, but I mean, they've been blowing up. The numbers have been horrible in Burnley, okay? All right. You mentioned money. How? How bad was education hit in the special session. Well, it was so we're starting this next school year with less money that we started last school year with and which again, isn't it? Isn't that unusual? I'm going to just say, but what he is unusual is that we're in an unprecedented time in in our lifetimes in in this pandemic, where the where to get kids back into school safely. It's going to take Monitoring temperatures. It's going to take hygiene, washing frequent Washington hands. It's going to take keeping could seperated figuring out how to feed them Breakfast and lunch..

You know, Brian, I know you would love the home cooking part of it in terms of the fans and everything but In your travels where you play golf? What makes a state of Michigan such a great Gulf state? You know, I think it's you know, just the tradition. I think there's so many great old school golf courses, which Detroit Golf Club is definitely one of those. And you just You know, there's such a greedy amateur. I remember going to the when it was, you know, years, I guess, but it was such a awesome atmosphere. Remember being around that number 17 the par three and I think they last year here in Detroit Golf Club was more of the same that I was just very exciting all around and great to be a part of Ryan Stewart PGA Tour in pro. He's from Michigan grope in Jackson with the Oakland University. He's joining us on the metro Health Sports Medicine guest sign here in the old show across Michigan. What's it been like, with the return of Gulf in the testing and everything connected to covert night? 18. Take me inside the ropes and what that testing processes like and has been like this week in Detroit. Yeah, I think you know it's it's definitely different. There's definitely some guidelines and protocols, which I think the PGA Tour has done a great job with and kind of adapting when a change needs to be made here and there, But yet you know, you get outside here and you gotta.

"Spring break maintenance work next week and then add people leave the facilities and the maintenance is complete will be again cleaning and closing facilities so that we can ensure that they're ready for return after the three week closure aha but what happens what's the benchmark what happens if the case is a corona virus or spiking Willoughby PD's call be the governor's call if it's gonna be extended beyond three weeks yes the governor has announced that they'll just continue to monitor that he has a team of people I'm looking at all the issues and you know it's an ever evolving situation people have been making decisions by the hour by the day and I'm confident they'll continue to do that and what happens is at the end of the school year the whatever this is students miss those days must be added on they must be there must be teaching days learning days I know that this morning again during the press conference on secretary Ryan Stewart announced that there will not be an extension to the school year and W. waving these mystical bay and there will not be make up time for the students the things students are tearing that I'm sure there are some some some good I mean some kids love going to school this is gonna be a little late this is gonna be real hardship for a lot of parents so not having your their children in school finding something else for them to do this is going to be a real challenge for all of us I mean we all really thrive on routine and that's a big security for adults and children alike and so and it's really a time to find support in our families our extended families our neighbors in those closest to us to find creative ways to keep our our minds active in our bodies active without having that large scale social engagement and the security of school this is true and to stay healthy and to stay safe in the next three weeks so once again schools closed on Monday for three weeks and then we'll see what happens after three weeks anything else.

"Everything being male particles because before we basically at Einstein when we had a Einstein's theory of relativity and that really dealt with particle everything's comprised apart and now they have this theory that they are not able to figure it out so a lot of the scientific community laughed breath. Because you can't figure stuff out it was meant to be the beaten. Some places just not meant for some people to go. They don't have the the the forcing every system understanding they go crazy superstring theory ills with everything. Everything is not meal particles but in fact are made of strings at a vibrant and different resins and it's different vibration. Different residents is what creates all of mad so matter is created technically by sound. That's a little closer to our understanding one of the problems with that understanding. Is that a separate relationship in the community of all these spirits with them. But instances like when you need right. We're told that food is fuel for the body so if you want certain things that happened in your body certain foods right but that goes along with the supposition the body is nothing but a machine crazies. One thousand some heart. What do I have a spiritual relationship and connection to that arm knowing that he's not vain but in fact in Europe did tradition tells us it is a force so that means it's alive? It's a spirit. How does that spirit feel about me? So they tend to compartmentalize proximate allies. Separate you see. They don't working roofs. They don't work in the communal. Cyclical Listrik theory mindset. Everything's separated. Take the fragment. That's why they know understand string because they will never bring themselves to understand what you can't understand string theory without understanding in dark matter it won't work the ARISTA off forms but that also has another implication. Made me ready for us. That means they're in. They all without feeling feeling of positive habit chocolates. They meet living certain chuck warehouses but they don't have feelings like they are in different. So when you're going through something and you're saying that you are wrong. That is a product. "Philip august thirteenth two thousand nineteen twenty six days just to kick off and three more days till the next preseason game against miami yea raymond james stadium seven thirty friday night. We started practice with them. Today i saw that no fights now be people fight. They're getting thrown out or something like that. Which i don't know if that means kicked off the team disappointed or fights i was listening into the two case and philipson concept talk about it and they said brought up the point that you're finding. You're not really getting anything done. I think that's as perspective on it. Which i guess is true israel but it is nice to see that enthusiasm. We'll call it that dizzy asam enthusiasm for the we've got on a little bit of news this week. We signed a safety darian stewart from nebr- broncos. He was waived in the spring stewart's stuart. We're going to have on the team. Didn't you replace orion story. Yeah we lost a ryan stewart and takada dixon to i r dawson. Evans is injured. Mike mike evans have not evans. Mike edwards has a strained hamstring cantrall bryce love friday's practice with an ankle injury so we're really hurting hurting that safety we signed mike abernathy and john battle but they're young and inexperienced so i think that they wanted a veteran presence back. There that could play is unknown commodity. He had fifty eight starts for the broncos over the last four years. He's been in the league for nine years. He's played a total of one hundred. Thirty games started ninety one. He played for saint louis rams back when they were in saint louis baltimore and then denver her in his career. He's had four hundred thirty nine tackles. Five sacks sixteen quarterback hits eleven interceptions forty five passes defended six forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries not too bad and he was on the twenty fifteen denver broncos super bowl team listing are heard a godwin pulled up today the hamstring yeah but he was back in yeah tonight long. It's hard to keep track of who's in and out at training camp because it seems like this is happening a lot. You get some tweaks a little l. Something they go out and go back in moving parts there. How come boylan didn't play in the preseason game the steelers i doubt now i don't remember real being hurt. Maybe it's just one of those veteran things where they didn't pursues. He was out there. He was out there for a few snaps right. Maybe he's hurting just a little bit and just didn't want to chance it. We worked out marcus yo crest another safety on monday but it doesn't look like we signed him. He played for for the texan in the raiders right right so i guess at work out too well. Maybe they're in stewart. Was that a better price. We're still pinching pennies over here. Era right got rid of emmett. Smith freed up a little bit of caprow so we can science and people he was so horrible in that preseason game. Are you putting together of that uses bad. He should retire mouth think he's gonna be forced to retire. Pick him up. There was a few years ago when he was starting for us and he was cell bad on. I don't understand how job then levy bring him in methinks so can't remember did he was he the one that played at green bay yeah and then we went to their stadium. He's wholesome green bay fans. Go pack. Does that the good lord now look at all. He's not on the team anymore so don't have to worry about god. We were talking last podcast about last preseason game. We're down about it yeah. We actually got called on youtube by rarely. Even i think that's his username yeah. He called us out so we were a little pessimistic. We need to jill out because it was just a per first preseason game and he's dry. He's right. I mean we had high expectations. I really wanted to see our defense. Go out there and a funk stuff up but <hes> defensive line coach casey rogers said they rose rose show about ten percent of what the defense has in store so that was encouraging. I mean why we brought a lot of pressure. We didn't have a whole lot of different looks and i went back in this always happens with the games are never as bad as you think. They are in their never as good as you think they all when you go back and you look at the tape. Unfortunately we don't have all twenty two who on the preseason games but i went back and watched the game. I don't know i'll probably watch about twelve times now looking at every position every player in i'm gonna i'm gonna go back on a few things that we said in our last podcast number one ryan griffin and we kinda crapped on him but watching him he was a lot better than i thought his area the throws he had a couple of air throws that were due to bad passes but most of his air throws were due to pressure. They blitzed us almost the whole fourth quarter for every down except one that counted and you know they ended up getting pressure on him. Eat it caused him to throw aaron passes every now and then when you say erin passes his aren't <unk> overthrows under throws both boats like that one where he just loved it up in the air and i kept seeing these passes where the receiver was like less than ten yards in front of them any under through that yes it happened quite a bit but it was because he was getting hit when he was trying to throw the ball almost every time that he had an arid pants. I counted two passes that he threw that were just crap passes but yeah. I mean other than that. Almost every bad ed pass he had was due to pressure they did they blitzed constantly. In the fourth quarter. We were down by two. They knew two scores. I knew we were going to be passing the ball most of the time and and obviously we did forty three times for guy had to throw the ball so ryan griffin played a lot better than i than i initially thought saudi think we keep three quarterbacks. I don't know i mean. Do you think we should keep him. I just it's one of those things where if you don't have a backup backup quarterback three backup quarterbacks in to go down. You're gonna wish you would've kept three but we have so much need at like safety and our defensive line. Although that's another thing i wanted to touch on our defensive line the second straight and i think we talked about they played pretty good but the second third stringers out there they played great. Actually nacho ledbetter header a couple of other guys. I had no idea who they were just really played good they. They got a lotta good pressure on. I just concerned about the interior of the line when you think about that. That's what i was talking to their second third string guys. Just they really good. There was one guy out there. I want to say he was number. Ninety eight he only played a couple of snaps huge big boy roy. I think it was anthony nelson ninety eight. He's just big big. Big guy looks like a fifth wheel for he kind of looks like that. Clyde is toby and the timing but abe is just a a big big guys the thickest guy we had out there but he would come snapped but they've they've played well. The interior guys did real good job the secondary you can't tell because it's not you don't have all twenty two. You cannot tell the secondary with out all twenty two. That's the reason why can't stand pro football focus because at grade the secondary just watching the broadcast tape and you can't do it. It's possible. He can't really great anyone. If he has maybe goes. You can't see what's going on with the linemen that well but you definitely can't see the second noon otherwise a couple blaze like one where a bunting was covering eighty. It looked like man coverage. Eighty did a slant route and he goes across the mental of bunting got beat and so he yells yells and points to forty six are one of the linebackers to cover eighty linebacker didn't hear him didn't seem whatever eighty outgoing wide open. He got the ball and then ran down the field for like thirty yards. That was the one where we missed a bunch of taxes but you see bunting run over you. Just kind of jogs over into the guy catches the ball and then gets in front. Alvin alvin looks like he was worried about making contact and all that so you could see on that play whose fault it wasn't a secondary definitely buntings fault it might have been zone coverage where the linebacker needed to pick that guy going up across the middle and then that would have been forty-six is fault but blunting didn't help. Let's put it that way other than that. Normally you can't tell what's going on in the secondary because you can't see them. You don't know if anybody is falling down back there. They bloom coverage or they get beat so it's impossible to grow and that's why i can't stand pro football focus because because it's just ridiculous if they try to great these guys on broadcast film it's no way you can and then they don't even go back and watch the countries fell later. No they put the grades out before the coaches. Film comes out ridiculous but the linebackers did pretty good they they did a lot of blitzing. I'm mainly talking about the second third stringers here's here <hes> devante bond played so well thought the offensive line the once evans lose out evan smith was out. They played pretty decent after that he was a reliability. Did they give be quite a bit but like i said the steelers were blitz and constantly and it was just hard for them to pick it up especially especially being a bunch of new guys andre ellington was absolutely horrible in pass blocking protection gosh he whipped that's the he was the one that with on the blitzer coming in and the guy hit hit ryan for the fumble. We ended up recovering it. Though i think yeah it's forty four came in in pittsburgh now forty four came in on blitz and andre allan wintom to block him totally whiff to the gods went right around even hit griffin may fumble ball a pretty sure that's long. We ended up recovering arain after three or four people grabbed it but yeah i will concede that we should not have been as pessimistic as we were. We just had high expectations and we're gonna see more especially from the guys in the secondary the they did not play well if you ask me v._h. Three you know he had pretty decent night but he did give up the big play other than that. Nobody really stood out in the secondary. Lotta people messed up. Monday was the main culprit. I want to ask in case of shell shock. Get out there in your first n._f._l. Game and the guys are so much faster and stronger. Was it the young guys you would say that they weren't really up to par. Was it just a unit in general you know you can't really tell because you can't see what's going on back there but there was too many plays where they had wide receivers wide open in the head plays where the cornerbacks were right on top of the receiver and they still call the ball because the quarterbacks didn't turn around and look at the ball touchdown on nj steuer meatless right there and he tried to back the ball out of the guy's hands yeah yeah it's too late..

"Weekend was winding down. There are many who thought based on the shell body works. So far that per Leany may have been the one sure thing over Strom so good on Ryan Stewart in the hawks personnel department for seeing something with an opportunity to cody's weren't giving them or giving him enough time in faith to prove a number three overall pick can live up to that status. Troy it's early. We talked about doing I know in the pre game on Sunday a little bit in terms of some of these acquisitions is STAN Bowman has made, but he has become a perfect number to center on this roster right now and the future seemed to be pretty exciting for him, forty points in forty two games. You really like it's kind of funny when you when you. You know, what comes first chicken or the are you giving ice time? Or do you earn? It works. Both ways. A lot of players that get that opportunity. Take advantage of it. And then they solidify their position in the NHL other players don't take advantage of it. And they say, well, I'm not getting the opportunity. Well, you gotta do something to earn a second shift turn another game. And we've talked about this on the blue line a rotation back there. Somebody's gotta step up and take the bull by the horns and say, I'm not going to be taken out of the lineup swift away that I'm playing on. That's kind of what you're sitting here. And I would assume that Arizona, you don't gauge Strom opportunities. Whether it's in the right situation or not you've got to adapt got to find ways to to impress the people who were putting real care and the ice and coming to Chicago. I think he was given a little bit more leeway a little bit more lenient in in the way that he started to play coming from Arizona's aggressive. We have a lot of faith in him. We made a trade form we're going to give him a chance. We're gonna. You know, use a museum but in some situations if you're a kid in the minors you get called up for one game don't expect to play two games. Don't expect to play two shifts without earning that opportunity to do. So so give stole marks for taking advantage of what he is the given here in Chicago. And he's put himself in a real nice position moving forward in. Nick, schmaltz got tons of ice time over the last year, plus here with the Blackhawks, I think the pro personnel department and seeing you know, what Strom is capable of without that body of work without seeing what schmaltz did or did not do to their liking and marks Nick for going into Zona before he got injured playing really well to you almost like to see is always say you want it to be a win win for both of those teams. That was a lot of ways that was a hockey trade. Now a lotta times you're dealing with campus. You're dealing with salaries not to load something that was a hockey traits to young guys for one another hoping that Spurs something in the right direction. Parini? I've always liked Pearleen struggled to find some lakes here with Chicago. But he's gonna get an opportunity tonight was Stroman debrincat from a couple of big goals Moco. So you never know where that Spurs him onto do bigger and better, and well, we'll we'll we'll TS here that release is on that line with Strom and debrincat as he was the other night as well in San Jose Cam ward, suffered what seems seems like a relatively minor injury during the course of Sunday's game whenever it happened. He played through it. But he'll need a week ten days to get back on the ice meeting. Colin Delia is backed up as the backup to Corey Crawford.

"Marchand gets his third point of the night. With the secondary helper crazy the other on Jake debris fifteenth goal of the year, but about a minute and a half later right before the period ended. The hawks were able to get back within two Strom Bill. Loose puck between the circles took a home to Murphy right point sends it left point. And fires. And that's deflects up off the ice. I believe it hit the stick of John More in front and deflected past harassed with twenty two seconds left in period. Number two hawks. Get one back. It's Duncan scoring. And it's four two Boston. That's keys third of the year. They have all come in the last fourteen games after previously scoring two in his previous one hundred thirty four games. Dominic. Cahoon his second assist of the night. Connor murphy. The other hawks have been out shot in this game. Twenty eight to thirteen also torn up and the face off circle. The hawks lost seventeen of twenty three face offs in that second period of play. Another thing that sticks out like a sore. Thumb on the scoresheet sixteen giveaway so far in this one for the hawks. That's double the amount that the Boston Bruins have committed. Stick around for the post game show afterwards. We'll get reaction from Boston as we take. It all the way up until ten o'clock. We'll also have a visit with the Blackhawks vice president of pro scouting Ryan Stewart been meaning to bring you this interview for a while you may have heard on the Blackhawks crazy. Podcast, but it will come on the post game show about a ten minute. Visit we had with him breaking down how the Blackhawks pro scouting department works. "So we just heard from Jeremy Calton and on last night's postgame show we played the. First half of our interview with his success for in Rockford interim head coach Derek king and among the topics. We are a touchdown in the first half of that in your interview. Henry yoki us assignment to the ice hog L Arbor's influence on him. Derek played for L Arbor during his days with the islanders back in the eighties. Nineties also the ice hawks struggled to score as a team this season. Plus, the individual performances of Anthony Lewis and Dylan secure, we pick it up now with his evaluation of some of his other players that Blackhawks fans are familiar with the starting with our Alexander fourteen who had picked up just six points in twenty one games overall this season, including after his demotion about mid December to Rockford that before collecting two goals in last night's win over the Chicago wolves I think the first couple of games, and this is usually how it works. When you call a guys up from the coast to the American League, they'll give you a couple of games. And then they they kind of fall into that. Habits were they you know, they they started taking their better than what they are. I think he started off. Well with us had a couple two or three games. You got a couple of goals, and then this habits disappear. He didn't rely on his habits. So now, I think just recently probably in the last week or two is ice times gotten better because he's working smart. And I think his habits are kinda help him here doing a much better job. And I'm hoping to see him, you know, score a couple of goals here. Start feeling good about himself. And and us down the stretch here. One guy who seems to be training better lately victory cell after a real slow start after not making the hawks out of out of training camp. I know there was also injury issue for a bit. But lately are you starting to see him play the way he needs to play while, you know, continuing to work on the foot speed and the acceleration. Yeah. Yeah. And you said at the foot speed is going to be the key for him. Especially at the next level. You can get away with it here. He's a smart intelligent hockey player. He can shoot a pocket and that can you can survive in the American League at that with that. But up there. You gotta have some foot speed. And then we'll just continue to work on it. But I think he's been working again. Like I said about Louis and Dylan they're wanting to park back and not giving it up so easy. Protecting parks coming out of the corners winning those battles. He's a big body tends to be standing still a little bit too much. And it's a constant reminder for to get those speak going. But I think he's been doing a better job of late. And like I said right after the break we win a couple. I was hoping we could just keep playing, but we'll just have to kind of reboot get everybody back on the same page. And hopefully, he's one of the last gator. I wanna ask ask you about is Blake Hillman. He held his own here with the hawks when they used them the final week or two of last season coming out of college. You know, stay at home type the statistics bear that out. A what is he shown this season to you? Well, again, you know, he's he's a smart hockey player. He's another guy needs to get his feet moving to he plays at one pace you need to have a little urgency in his game a little more than he is. And I think he's made strides with that at the start of come out of camp. And at the start of the year. I think. I think some of these guys don't realize how get this leak is in. There's some real good hockey players. Just don't quite get a chance to make it right away. So you're playing against some really good players. And I think he's finally realised that and along with him and Gilbert's they're both patients picked up a bit. I think they're comfortable now in the league. And they're starting to show the signs of why they got trapped in why they played some games. So looking for him this second half after the all star break to really step his game up, and you know. Certify they're in a little more dominant. A little more comfortable with the play. So Asian good for. So just want to ask you about the guys in net to Anton Forsberg will start with him. How does he handled being back in the AHL where you know, he could conceivably be all season that after getting his first full NHL season under his belt a year ago? Yeah. That's a tough. I try to stay away from the goalies. There little always wonder like how these guys are gonna react when they come down. But Pete Aubrey he's done a great job for us with these guys. And I think they're real relaxed when they're down here, and there's no pressure on them and the big thing with force breakage. He's been a pro-. He's accepted it he knows. He's got a a work continue to work hard work hard on his game to get back to where he possibly belongs. And he's been he's been outstanding for the other guy has to. Yeah. I'll take a quick swing it Kevin lacking. And if you let me I mean, he is a slightly better save percentage than Anton slightly worse goals against average. But what if in your eyes have been the strongest part of his game as long as colonies with the big club. How much of a priority is it's a it's a play him as regularly with Anton here going down the stretch. It's huge. That's what we are where we gotta develop these guys, especially. The goal is you know with lanky. I think the biggest thing I find with Tim is even if there's a bad goal and Forsberg's the same to they didn't get down on themselves, Lincoln and specially sometimes you know, struggled to score goals. So if if there's a soft one that goes in not saying it was his fault. But it's just a fluky thing. We're bounces off a skate or it's a bad bad balance or something he doesn't get rattled by it. He it almost like he picks it up or where he's like. Okay. I got a whole Ford. Now, I can't let any simple or bad break back doubts goals in. He's done a great job with that is not always rewarded for his efforts. Because we just can't score goals at the time. But now, I think with score if you look all sale his starts enforced Burke starts you can see a lot better records from when morpheus. And again, I really appreciate your time here with us, you know, besides Delia and Sikora and fourteen dollars German fours, laying Luke Johnson even Jacob Nielsen for a couple of games. I know that's part of the thing that you have had adjust to as a head coach with all the revolving door moving bodies. But is there a player to that? We haven't discussed who's play has jumped a bit this year and could be in the conversation next time Mark Bernard and STAN Bowman need someone. Why think well Nielsen's one of them that stands out for me, Johnny? You know, what Johnny's gonna bring you here. He's he's eventually going to get a a fulltime job somewhere. Whether it's here or somewhere else. That's I try to remind these guys there's thirty one teams. And now there's gonna probably be a couple more or one more for sure, but Carlson defense, I think he's made huge strides. And he's really surprised me with how good he is. He's a smart hockey player. But then again, there's somebody has to work on his boots should get his work on skating and then. I can't see him not getting an opportunity somewhere. But he's a real talented kid real good solid defensive with some offense aside tool, but he's real solid solid individual. And then Nielsen to Nielsen at the start of the year. He's even though he got called up. He. He's he's been a great two way player for us and pretty solid consistently all year and those are couple couple guys kinda step out. I mean, we know the Marty's Martensson, Johnny. And these guys like you said secure notes guys will eventually get their shot again. But standouts that are surprising. The Nielsen Carlson so the defenseman Lukas Karlsson and Jacob Nielsen whom walks fans got a brief look at earlier this season saying those Derek thing those are the guys who have really stepped up their game. So far this season would be surprised if Carlson gets a call or Nielsen gets called up again if STAN Bowman should ever have a need. So hope you enjoyed that interview. With Derek king last night carried over into tonight. And in tonight's postgame show, we are at least planning I am all screwed up by this late. I'd start here. But if we have time we able to visit with the Blackhawks vice president of pro scouting Ryan Stewart. Interesting conversation with him kind of laying out the landscape. Of what the Blackhawks are in their pro scouting department. How many people how they work how they operate. And how these next couple of weeks leading up to the trade deadline how much they worked together in tandem, even more. So with general manager STAN Bowman Ed assistant general manager L mcisaac a leading up to the trade deadline. So hopefully, we'll have an opportunity to bring that to you tonight. If not we'll do that on Tuesday nights postgame show from Edmonton. Speaking of Edmonson, they have already been in action today and they lost in Philadelphia their fourth straight defeat five four it came in overtime that after leading three one and forty two the flyers picked up their seventh consecutive win on the strength of four power play goals. And then no one Patrick who missed a wide open net at the end of regulation that would have wanted for the flyers without going over time. He then wins it in the extra session to keep the trends going for both the flyers and the Oilers before returning to face the Blackhawks on Tuesday night or there's have one. More road game at Montreal tomorrow. By the way, the Canadians also with an early game today they lost at home in overtime to the New Jersey. Devils a real quick here. Brennan Pearleen in for Chris Kunitz in the lineup for the Blackhawks Pontus Abrahamic suffered an injury last night. So JT Brown cycles in a four the Minnesota wild over three one losers last night at Dallas, Ben Bishop doing his thing as he did against the hawks opponent last night, the Buffalo Sabres shutting them out along just one against the Minnesota wild last night. We hope you enjoyed the Bob and Chicago Blackhawks pre-game show stick around..

"I get another words not going to eight have not been enough. The craziness of two thousand seven immediately comes to mind, but I'm not sure of the others. I was actually thinking about that two thousand seven season the other day, and who on earth would the four kimes Ben when everybody I think I had one loss and everybody else said two losses. But to his point. I think if you were expanded eight teams it gives more people paternity say they were playoff team. I'm not sure changes who wins the national title. Probably not again. I think I think it's okay. If you have a lot of times, and I don't wanna basketball football or apples and oranges. But I think sometimes the opening rounds. Deterrment can be a lot of fun and that adds to the spectacle of the story line. I mean, we didn't certainly have that in the first semifinal games. So I think it's you know, I think there's something to be said for you put more teams give them more to play for you know, to get into later in the season. It makes you know would make the pack full title game. More interesting. It would make the big tall title game. More interesting. So I think that especially rising tide lifts all boats from that perspective. I think it would be I think it would be very good for the sport. Ryan stewart. It'd be Georgia doing Bruce wish school get the bigger bulb on heading into twenty nineteen Auburn or Texas or is there another team. They'll get even more hype based on over form. It's gotta be Texas. Right. Yeah. I would think so I mean, Texas, you know, handle Georgia one point they're up twenty eight to seven I think people are waiting people are waiting for to anoint, Texas as back right with Auburn. Auburn is so wildly unpredictable. It's like if I'm offered found like just leave us be. Even talk about us because that's when we're dangerous when you guys start getting, you know, looking at us like sweet, then all of a sudden, right bad things happen. So, you know, if you're Auburn just just let me be and then all sneak up on you. I'm Auburn made my early top twenty five and I'm awfully bit. They probably wouldn't have if they had say we'll certainly had lost Purdue in that bowl much rather than put up seventy on them that wasn't that the score. Or no sixty sixty three fourteen. I think was the final should that bores really be any reflection of how they're going to be next season. No. But it's natural to get sucked into that a little bit. Okay. Okay. This one ROY has a little bit of a wind up bear with it. Because it's a compliment that I wanna read I just wanted to say I've been a fan of your podcast since the lost episodes way back in two thousand ten dollars. Now, ten and. There's a lot of banging going on in the background. We're looking for the law step. So it's too. I have two daughters now ten innate and I used to run five miles morning with them in their double stroller. And then they started running your podcasts always been a part of this journey. Thank you very much, ROY. And here's operates we actually saw Bruce at our hotel and Columbus before the Nebraska game. I would have said Hello. And thank you. But he seemed busy. So I didn't wanna bother him. Oh, I'm sorry. You didn't. I would always appreciate that. He hasn't. Actual question. Now ready? Okay. Is Dana Holger. Sohn, the smartest cat and the room. If the playoff does expand eight teams he has just created a path exponential easier for them to reach the playoffs regularly..
