Takeaways from Congress’ first Washington DC hearing on Capitol riot
"What went wrong looking into the security lapses. That happened before the Capitol riot last month with us to talk about the latest on these hearings on Capitol Hill is CNN, Washington correspondent Ryan Nobles. He joins us on Skype. So Ryan, these investigations are really just beginning. But have we learned anything so far? What the takeaways from day one. Yesterday's hearing was pretty explosive on many levels. Nick you heard from many of these officials from the various law enforcement agencies, some who have been forced out of their jobs. About what went wrong on that day. And what was perhaps the most shocking was that there was intelligence on the table that some of these agencies, the FBI and other agencies had taken in a lot of social media chatter from people that had said that they were specifically Coming to Washington with the goal of storming or causing chaos at the Capitol, and that information never made its way down to Capitol police sergeant in arms on other various law enforcement agencies, the Washington metro, much Politan Police department and they were never able to use that information to help prepare and as a result, they you know, the these leaders just were not prepared for the overwhelming crush of people that descended on the Capitol that day. On and you basically what lawmakers came to the conclusion that there needs to be a better flow of information to the folks that are gonna be making decisions about how to protect the capital in the future. There was some finger pointing that occurred yesterday, too, and that's getting a lot of attention. Yeah, That's right. You know, you had Capitol police saying something different What this Senate sergeant at arms, said Metropolitan Police seem to have a different perception is to have that information flow came down. And then one of the big things Joan that no one seemed to be able to agree on is when the National Guard was called in for reinforcement in and why it took so long for the National Guard to actually make it to the capital. To help protect the members of Congress and people that were at the Capitol. And then why the National Guard wasn't there even ahead of all of this s O. You know, this is just the beginning of this process. You know, this is one hearing, they said today or yesterday should say that there's gonna be another hearing that will involve the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. And then, of course, Speaker Pelosi is in the process of drafting legislation that would form a 9 11 style commission to look into all of this. It's gonna be a long time before you know all the information comes out as to what exactly went wrong in January Sex. Okay,
Trump Again Scorns Science on Masks and Vaccines
"President Trump continues to dispute what scientists are saying about the race for a vaccine yesterday claiming the CDC Director was confused when Dr Redfield said, there would not be enough vaccines for the general public until late two, thousand and twenty one as C. N. N.'s Ryan Nobles now reports Dr Robert. Redfield today talked about his future on the job. Thank you. President trump on the road to the battleground of Wisconsin with plans for another packed rally with very few precautions in place to prevent the spread of Corona virus. The rallies which are picking up frequency symbolized the president's approach to the virus contradicting the specific guidance set out by his administration's Centers for disease, control like wearing masks, masks of problems too, and I talked about the masks have to be handled very gently very carefully. The president continues to doubt the benefit of masks despite CD director Robert Redfield telling a congressional panel in explicit terms just how valuable can be to stopping the spread I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against. Cova Than when I take a covert vaccine, the disconnect on masks emblematic of the ongoing clash between the president and those tasked with containing covert. Especially when it comes to win a vaccine could be ready redfield born in Congress a reliable vaccine will take time I. Think we're probably looking at third. Late second quarter. Third. Twenty twenty one but trump claiming the doctor. Had IT wrong? I think he made a mistake when he said that it's just incorrect information. Even though trump's handpicked member of the Task Force Dr Scott Atlas agreed a widely distributed safe vaccine won't be ready by Election Day. And then the. There will be seven, hundred, million doses by end of coupon. Redfield did not back down making it clear in a statement that he meant when he said about the vaccine timeline and promising that he has no plans to step down at the same time president trump blamed blue states or states with democratic governors for the high death toll the standoff prompting swift criticism from Democrats. If you close your eyes and pretend that half the country doesn't exist, maybe some might think you didn't do such a spectacularly awful
Biden's lead over Trump is the steadiest on record
"Day Day in in the the rear rear view view mirror. mirror. Now Now the the presidential presidential campaign campaign will will be be heating heating up up for for sure sure we we go go deeper deeper now. now. With With CNN, CNN, Washington Washington correspondent correspondent Ryan Ryan Nobles Nobles joining joining us us from from the the White White House House this morning on Skype. Ryan Poles have been fairly consistent over the past few months. Joe Biden holding about a 10 point lead over Donald Trump nationally. How's the Trump campaign hoping to close that captain? How's the Biden campaign, hoping to hold him off? Yeah, well, first things Bruce, the Trump campaign would refute public polling. They would tell you that the race is a lot closer than what the public polling is telling us much like we saw in 2016. But what you see from the Trump campaign right now is a coordinated effort. To try and really take advantage of the violence and unrest that we're seeing in some American cities As the result of these protests that took place because of shootings by police with unarmed African Americans and You know, the Trump campaign sees this as a wedge issue for them, particularly in some of these key swing states where they won four years ago where Republicans don't traditionally when that's in the upper Midwest places like Michigan and Wisconsin, and they're going to continue to beat that drum. On the other side of the coin. You see the Biden campaign slowly starting to actually get back to physical campaigning. Joe Biden travelling a lot more than he was during the summer because of the Corona virus pandemic and for the Biden campaign. It's just about not screwing things up. They feel like they've got a comfortable lead their head in the places they need to be ahead off. So it's really about the Trump campaign, putting the pressure on them and Biden trying to resist making a big mistake and interesting that potential Corona virus vaccine that so many people have been hoping for, has now become a point of contention in the campaign. It's kind of a weird thing, right, Bruce? I mean, everybody's been begging and hoping that Ah, vaccine would come sooner rather than later. But now that the Trump administration has seemed to indicate that they're going to attempt to push the vaccine, maybe even before Election Day that has Democrats raising questions as to whether or not they're doing it safely and you even saw you know, Vice President Biden and and Kamala Harris was running mate split on whether or not they would take a vaccine if it were rushed to market before the election. Certainly raising some questions, and the other part of this, too, is that it You know, there's a lot of the Trump base a lot of Trump supporters that are skeptical about vaccines in general. So the idea that they would be you know, anxious to take a vaccine like this that comes on the market so soon is really an interesting dynamic in this entire race, and you're headed to North Carolina tonight. That's right. The president, I got a very busy campaign schedule. He's gonna be in to swing states today is gonna spend the morning in Jupiter, Florida and then had to Winston Salem, North Carolina tonight. Later in the week, he'll be in Pennsylvania this weekend heading to the West Coast going to make a stop in Nevada. The president is in full campaign mode right now, and I could tell you I've covered about a half a dozen of these rallies. They're taking very few, if any. Corona virus precautions. Very few masks, People shoulder to shoulder. The president's basically put the pandemic in the rear view mirror and is focusing completely on, you know, firing his campaign up just like it was in March. All right, Ryan, thanks Appreciate the update, CNN, Washington correspondent Ryan Nobles joining us on Skype this morning.
Trump says Kenosha trip could increase 'enthusiasm' amid concerns it will stir tensions
"President Trump is off to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Today we got a preview from CBS News. White House correspondent Stephen Portnoy. President Trump says he doesn't believe his trip to Kenosha will increase. It also increased enthusiasm. And it could increase love and respect for our country. Mr. Trump, who says he'll meet with law enforcement, but not the family of Jacob Blake offered a defensive Kyle Riton house, the 17 year old accused of killing two men in Kenosha with a semiautomatic rifle. I guess he was in very big trouble he would have been, I probably would have been killed, but it's under its under investigation. Meantime, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden blames the president for rioting, saying he's stoking violence in our cities. CNN. Washington correspondent Ryan Nobles told us this morning that while Biden's response is a part of his campaign strategy, it also serves as a reminder of how the president has responded to the protests and the point that Joe Biden made yesterday's and all these problems are happening under Presidents Watch in, while President Trump is trying to create this dystopian gloom and doom picture of what could happen If Joe Biden were elected, Biden is reminding voters that President Trump is currently the president, and that's what's happening right now. So Biden tryingto make sure that he is clear that he's on the side of the social justice protesters. But he also agrees that the violence is a bridge too far and that there needs to be some sort of calm brought too many of these cities. Biden condemned the violence, saying rioting and looting is not protest Ng it's lawlessness.

All right. We're going to get into something that a lot of us have been wondering about first of all when when is the rain going to? Finally stopped. But what is the reins impact on our fire season? And we actually have our very first numbers have been crunched on this because the conventional wisdom as Mike blunt joins us in studio here, the conventional wisdom is that the more rains the more fuel the more fire. That's right, Christina. Usually we hear that. If it rains a lot that's bad for fire season. We hear that. If it doesn't rain lot. It's also bad for fire season. Well, we we talked to Jan null. Who's an adjunct professor at the department of meteorology and climate science at San Jose State university. And he says we can expect less than one inch of rain next week sorta on the edge of of the jet stream is to the north of us, and we're going to get a number of real weak little systems can be moving through northern California, and they may drag into the bay area. But even with all the rain that's already fallen. He says that's not a bad omen for firefighters. He says typically northern California experiences. A heavy rain season followed by a period of drought. It's always sort of been the mantra of Cal fire and in some. Some ways valid that. If it's.

"Town wrong. Ryan nobles joins us from CNN. I, you know, I get tired around and saying he can't make it up. It's chemical. You can't make it up. And I think one of the big problems. This administration has is the unforced Erhard the things that they should definitely have locked down that just seem to slip through the cracks in in create problems and create a perception about them that you know, you could easily avoid if you just took some time to make sure you have all your ducks in a row. So one of the things being discussed today is Admiral mcraven comes out in a statement and says that President Trump is missing it a hundred different levels here. Trump because he's a child has to hit back and in hitting back. He says to Chris Wallace in a wide ranging FOX interviewed Chris Wallace credit. He was hard on the prison. Not what FOX normally does. And he says to Chris Wallace. Well, it wouldn't have been great if we got bin Laden sooner. I mean, he was in a mansion in Pakistan. Could he identified? This is my guys nice as the ones he's been out to this guy who had four or five six deferments wouldn't have to serve in east criticizing, you know, let me just say this guy would set at thirty seconds. You can't make it up. No. What? With the president seems to miss on. This is that here, you have a a military man with a wealth of experience has been in a number of different theaters who understands the world and understands the problems the world's are facing and a clear eyed leader would bring this individual into the Oval Office and ask him some hard questions about what he thinks is going wrong, and how to do better in the way Donald Trump chooses to handle situations. Like, this is just to go on the attack and bring up, you know, bringing up the thing about bin Laden really has nothing to do with the conversation at hand. It reminds me so much of the criticism that he leveled against John McCain about being a prisoner of war and he likes prisoners of war that don't get captured. I think it falls in that same vein it at the end of the day. You know, I remember covering President Obama's campaign. And there were a lot of concerns about his foreign policy background, which I think we're worthy concerns, and I remember interviewing Madeleine Albright at the time. Was the outgoing secretary of state, and I remember asking her specifically are you concerned that President Obama doesn't have this foreign policy expertise, and she said, no and not because he has a curious mind because he wants to learn he wants to know things that he doesn't know any knowledge is where he is deficient in knowledge, and he goes to seek and learn and acquire that knowledge. There's just no evidence of Donald Trump has the same approach. What point does he give up the right to say, he's deeply concerned about the military, and he wants to do everything he can for the military when he skips Veterans Day ceremonies when he takes his shot at mcraven and the navy seals. And when he doesn't go as the commander in chief to any of the sites where American troops are at war doesn't go to Afghantistan doesn't go anywhere else and says, well, the reason I don't do that is because I don't agree with those wars. Right out the commander in chief job description. Doesn't matter what you think about what happened before you got there. You're the commander in chief. I Steve I always remember. And I can't remember what year it was during the George W Bush administration, but it was early on the Afghantistan war, and it was still a very very tense place. And I remember being at home with my parents for thanksgiving in upstate New York. And the NBC news breaking into the Thanksgiving Day parade to show video of George W Bush, you know, handing out Turkey dinners to the troops in Afghanistan. And it being, you know, the kind of thing where everybody stop what they were doing and went around the table to see that our president the commander in chief had given up his thanksgiving with his family to go west beast troops who are way from with their families on thanksgiving. And what kind of signal could could President Trump give in a situation like that? I mean, this would be an opportunity for him. Right. But in opera when he has these opportunities he seems to pass these opportunities. And what he did was this. Moran. Was he gathered together a small group of veterans for a very short ceremony. And then while they were there, you reminded them about how lucky they should be that he's the president because he's done so much for that. You're just the optics of it are are just so different than the way. We've seen other presidents, babe. Both Republican democrat when it came to our troops. Right. It's a short week, of course. And and a lot of times you're going to get more photo ops with pardoning turkeys, and like you said even visiting troops and see the president to more humanitarian things this week is a is a big one because you're seeing a remnants of the caravan arrive in Tijuana, you also more information about the the situation Saudi Arabia. We also have a continuing I don't even know we sophomoric attack at the house intelligence committee chair or incoming committee chair. It seems like a a rough weekend will lead to more news than usual this week. I think there's always the possibility that when we think there isn't going be news. There's gotta be more news. But you know, we're in this kind of calm before the storm before the Democrats officially take over and you've got a week here where the president is going to be at more log always gonna leave for more log Lago Tuesday after the Turkey pardoning. And that's generally when he has a bit more time on his hands, and he has his phone in his hand. And he watches a lot more cable news, and he is consumed with the things that bother him. And that's usually when he lashes out. So you know, he's going to see some blow back because you know, he claimed that he had this conversation with the Finnish president that. If you just rake leaves that somehow prevents forest fires finish president has. No. Does not seem to recall that conversation all the things that you mentioned. There's definitely the possibility that he could lash out, and you know, what's it gets a big difference between covering missing ministration versus covering past administrations. Is that when they made news, you know, the Obama Bush administration's even go back to Clinton, it was a very detailed roll out that was you know, that had specific talking points in specific goals and objectives the way President Trump makes news is by just sending out a tweet with some sort of claim that is not always backed up in sack. That's a lot more difficult to cover because you just don't understand the context of guilt your he's coming from. But I could see this week what else weeks for a lot of those tweets complying, and we have no idea where they're coming from one little last question. Just you saw in the in the interview last night with Fox News. A sudden change of twist with the president when it comes to the mid term results at I the the press conference that came out right after the election. He was all about how we one did the tone yesterday was I'm not on the ballot. I didn't have anything to do with this which was also completely predictable. Right. Even though and Chris Wallace pointed this out there were many times during rallies where Donald Trump's that. Just think I'm on the balance. This is me if you vote for this person, you are voting for me specifically what he said he specifically said that. But yeah, there was no possible way that he was gonna take this loss graciously, and or in any way, shape or form accept any level of blame for that. You know, the massive number of democratic house seats that flipped or Republican House seats at flipped democrat ineffective. Even with a favourable Senate map. They they won here Florida where I still haven't leaving today. But you know, they lost an era Zona. They they lost in West Virginia lost the places where they expected to win. You know, I think the day after the election. We thought perhaps Republicans did kinda save face a little bit. But two weeks later. I it seems like this was that convincing democrat democratic win that we expected it to be. And there's no surprise if Donald Trump is not taking any blame for it. The last time I sitting president did not go to a war zone. Because I don't have. I look it up because I I don't know that I could find one. In modern presidential history. Especially when a country has still been actively engaged in war. You know during the Clinton administration. There wasn't you know, that as many active or theaters is there is now there there is opportunity for this president to do that. And he is has chosen not to. And I do think especially as we get around thanksgiving where you know, we kind of take a step back and think about all the people that have sacrificed for this touch this. This would be an opportunity for him. The trips that have been placed it's going to happen. The troops that have been placed on southern border are not needed to be on the southern border. They could be home with their families for thanksgiving. I is he going to see them. I mean, I know he made the trip before and they did the walk through. But is he going to see them for thanksgiving? This weekend. Thanksgiving the schedule is that starting Tuesday afternoon, he will be in more Lago, and we'll be there through the weekend. That's in back to Washington on Sunday. But you know, things could change we didn't know when George W Bush was going Afghantistan that's not to say something couldn't change. But there's no reason to think he's going to do anything other than be at his palatial estate of the east coast of Florida this week. You have to remind me again about his incredible commitment to the troops. All right going forward. In other news this week. What is the big item other than you finally get into your home and see your family? Well, I really think that it's the transition of power in Washington. And how this plays out? You know, how are the Republicans in this lame duck session going to handle the final housekeeping items that they have at their disposal. Are they gonna subpoena people on the house intelligence committee in kind of a dog and pony show? Does Nancy Pelosi end up winning the speakership? I think that is a huge story. That's very much in doubt. At this moment. You know, many of these freshmen house members one elections based on telling their constituents that they were not going to support her. And there does still seem to be a small group of young members of congress who are not willing to just toe the party line despite Pelosi's iron grip on that caucus. So and then, you know, you've got Donald Trump got a contributing to all of that suggesting that perhaps Republicans should go for Nancy Pelosi speaker. So I I think when you know, this this month of kind of movement from this being controlled by. Republicans being controlled by Democrats. How will both sides handle it in? And how does that impact the leadership picture? I think that's gonna tell us a lot about how we going into the new year. 'cause it's interesting. I actually think Nancy Pelosi as speaker. He is obviously better for Donald Trump from a PR perspective because he has a foil, but a young new brand of leadership in in the speakership there that could mean confrontation, not cooperation between Donald Trump of the democratic caucus. So that could really make a big difference. As to how a twenty nineteen plays out heading into the twenty twenty campaign that Democrats have to get their act together because they don't have their act together in any way, shape or form. Forget about picking a client candidate for twenty twenty. They can't even figure this out in in a Paul Ryan gone, again, humor Pelosi and McConnell have to go for the greater good of the country. But those who are in congress want to stay in congress. So they stayed with the people who keep them in congress those that make the rules benefit by making the rules, and they don't have any interest in changing the rules, and that's both parties. Yeah. And I do think that you do see a level of disarray within that democratic caucus right now. And you know, she probably has enough votes to become the next speaker. But it's not by a wide margin. And there could end up being some sort of deal that she cuts what she says she's only going to speaker for a year or something along those lines that would continue to make the situation there, very unsettled. And to your point even we talked about this often, there's not a lot of unity within the Democratic Party. And if you're going to take on Donald Trump and his machine in twenty twenty and if you even want to be able to find areas of compromise, there's gotta be a level of unity within that conference..

"Uncomfortable hearing. I'm Elliot Francis. Afford a Senate races headed to a hand recount after a machine review of the initial vote. Kept democratic Senator Bill Nelson just short of his challenger Republican governor Rick Scott correspondent Ryan nobles explains. What officials look for during a hand recount when someone is filling in those little dots to indicate which person they want to vote for if they put a marking in both of the ovals and the optical scan machine. Picks that up they register that as an over vote. They kick that ballot out and put it off to the side. Or if they choose not to vote for either candidate. So there is nothing registered in either particular oval they pull that out, and that's considered an under vote. Meanwhile, the only counties that hadn't reported those counts were three of the state's larger. Broward, Lee and Palm Beach counties on three of those counties. Miss Thursday's deadline because of functioning machines, and at least in the case of Broward missing the deadline by two minutes. The head of immigration and customs enforcement had a very uncomfortable confirmation hearing Thursday. Linda Kenyon has the story. The acting head of ice took a lot of heat for once tweeting that the Democratic Party should be renamed the neo-classicist party. It was a momentary lapse of judgement, and I apologize Ronald Battelle nominated to be assistant homeland security secretary for immigration and customs enforcement made that apology before the Senate homeland security and governmental affairs committee. I did not mean to suggest that the party is somehow against American values.
