"On CBS sports radio last night, another impressive performance by the Alabama Crimson Tide to finish off an impressive season. Are they? One of the best Alabama teams ever. Joining us here on the show to discuss is our good friend for the Pac 12 networks. And he's also one of the co host of all American stories on the C W, which is very exciting. Our friendly Yogi Roth, Yogi. Good morning. Good morning. How you doing, man? I'm great. But thanks So much for joining us. In terms of the dominance of this year's Alabama Crimson tide, would you say they're one of the best in the saving era? Actually one of the best in the least my love life of college football era, which is a little over 20 years now. S. Oh, yeah, totally one of the best and coach Dave in there. I just think they're their offense number one was so dynamic. It reminded me when I was coaching us. See liner Reggie and LenDale White and then How many bird a tight end and you know Dwayne Jarrett, a wide receiver. I mean, there was just talent everywhere and guys winning awards just like these guys do right Ryan Kalil on the offensive line, like the center last night from Alabama. So They reminded me that I think we probably a little bit better The defense back then with Cushing and Company, but overall, the dominance that they had every week and the creativity I loved it. Obviously I have an affinity for shark having known him for the better part of 20 years. I think that they're not playing catch on offense, right? It's not our best athletes. Let's just be better than the guys across from us their scheme and teams up. That that isn't always seen in cultural calling you better athletes. So overall, I was so impressed with how they played. And then you have to note the discipline off the field, man. I mean, in terms of getting through the season The pressure that they had on the selfishness of the team. I thought that came through it at least every interview that I saw in the college washing play. You do a lot of scouting as well for the NFL draft. What do you think about Devante Smith? He burst upon the scene this year. He was the Heisman Trophy winner, first wide receiver in many, many years to win the Heisman. Do you think about him in the next level? Oh, you know, it's funny is that I'm gonna text her with all these coaches I work with at the elite 11, which is the premier high school quarterback camp in the country. So we get to see all these guys early and then we have all these throwback photos. Of course, we went to one of those on our text read to see Don't taste it and you go back to that time. I remember this guy doing what he did in his high school highlight tape basketball in terms of leaping over defenders making insane grabs. This guy's been doing it for a long time. Sort of the athleticism. I think what we noticed him was, of course, fill out and then the new onto the position. You know, I watched him collide through zones and no one to sit down. I know. You know, I love watching impressed. Different leverages against man coverage, So I think he's going to be a number one wide receiver at the next level. I really do. And I think in college football that's hard to predict in this era unless you're just absolutely freakish like him, And that's why I think to me it's a no brainer. I think he's gonna be one of the top players take and I think the true difference maker At the next level. When you add in the way Iran's to administer the guy, of course, ever to be locked in the what he does in the 40, and I'll get a ton of playing, but overall the way that he plays the style when she plays To me is is a first round draft pick no doubt, and I don't know why he would be the first receiver off the board. College football analyst Yogi Roth. Joining us this morning on the show is really interesting to hear Kirk Herb shoes the other day, say that our postseason other words college football's postseason is the worst in sports because it's so predictable. He said. There needs to be changed here because we know the same exact team's gonna be there every single year. What you think about that comment. And what do you think about the future of college football being led by the same giants every year? Well, I think overall I've never been a fan of the playoffs, you know, from from the very beginning when you and I met, we talked about that, and the reason is, is that it? It makes ages to focus on. Four teams and two games at the end of the year. And then, of course, the title game and it mixes teams based on the narratives, right. I live that every year, right when Washington played Auburn or organ played Auburn If they lost, the whole conference was out. That's not right for the game. All right, In my opinion, that's all college football's about in the same vein. If you're gonna make it about the four best teams, um And period, right And that's pretty much what the CFP is asked to do. It's an easy argument to say we Alabama and Clemson, Ohio State, and you know you could rotate the fourth one. If you want between a few different teams..

"California coming up to top the hour. I've got Kentucky head basketball coach John Calipari next hour. BYU head football coach too talky. Right now. A conversation I love I have you now to yet. I know I'm gonna love it. We are joined right now. By good front of program. He is a Pac 12 football analyst. He is a filmmaker. He is a New York Times best selling author. He's host of the Yoki Roth Show Podcast. He holds the honor of being the first in studio guest on CBS Sports Network and the only man who gets his own custom greeting on this show. He is Yogi Roth. Yogi. It's good to have you back. How are you? Ro. I'm so good. I really appreciate the time. I really appreciate the time too. And you know, we've already had some college football. We've got the NFL back tonight. So let me just go ahead. Ask you this question. How great is ball, Yogi? It's the best man. It is here in some form or fashion. So super thankful for that. And, uh, I think even if you're not playing you confined, Silver linings, beautiful game. To still be down with the greatest of all is you asking me talking to Yogi Roth Ball is great, and I'm a talk about with you in a minute. But you and I have had somebody good conversations over the years on topics that have nothing to do with sports and more to do with mindset. Attitude approaches the life back on July, 15th. Your son was born. What was that moment like for you? Amy and his older brother, Zane. You know, I appreciate you asking me that It was. It was surreal, to be quite honest, You know, my dad always said. It's a miracle when someone entered the world and it was exactly that. I mean the amount of respect I have for Amy. Is out of control like We love performances, whether it's the Miami he or whether it's Trevor Laurence in your college football the league, but there is not like childbirth. Oh, that experience has been great. And then amid the pandemic and Nope, actual football for me, it has been a beautiful still relying, you know, I'd be on the road four days a week if it was back to what it was a year ago. And now look at this kid in the face were doing squat, You know, trying to improve hand eye coordination and all those early things for a two month old enjoying every drop of it. Yogi Roth is joining us. I'm gonna ask you about the Pac 12 in a minute. But one of the things you you've talked about in your podcast. Is the power in the pause for those who are not familiar with that concept. What is the power in the paws? And how do you use it? Yeah, works for me. Whenever there's space. You could look at your wall in your home right now. If you cleared off, you cleared out your closet or you clear out a room, everybody doing their thing during the pandemic. And the challenge is to fight. Feeling that wall stealing that closet, killing that yard, filling all the spaces there Because things just want to go into your world. So can you take pause? And take status of like where you're at. What is life about what is my life like? What is my vision board? Like what is my proverbial wall? Look like what is my bookshelf look like and you know what? I'm going to be super purposeful about it. I think everybody had to do that on some level right now in their own lives, and also in sport, you know, I've talked to a lot of coaches of you have time off. Is it time to add more drills to add more recruiting areas or you know what really has value what really has meaning and when you dive into Greece man like there's five stages of it. And the final one is accepted. Some believe in a six stage, which is meaning, and I believe in that So at the end of the day, can you find great meaning in this grief of no football season? Maybe you've lost your job. You've lost a loved one. Can you find deeper meaning? I think the only to find it is the pause, and it's like an interview. The awkward silence is awkward, but usually brilliance comes from that. You interviewing somebody you've done that so many so many times in your career. And I think that's our job now in life is to really sit and get comfortable view. Our feet is In the paws conceived membranes. Come out. Yogi Roth is joining us right now. You actually answer my next question I was going to say, because the pact what was in that pause. I wonder what it's like for the coaches, the players the entire programs, But you're right. If you're being intentionally, you're being purposeful. You could make the most of that. We ask you about a player in particular Oregon offensive tackle today. Sewell. He announced that he's going to opt out of the season. He's going to get ready for the NFL draft. What did you make of that decision and how special player is he I know. I know. I watched every snap of pack tender packed old football since 2003. And he's as talented of a tackle. As I've seen. I got chance. The coach Ryan Kalil grant, he was a senator in his place forever in the NFL. To me. He's that type of generational player right? When you get to learn about him from his coaches and teammates, and you watch him play that he moves like a guard out there at times, but he moves like an H back. When he's calling and he's moving and setting and they talked about the qualities that he Is embody from.

"Are looking for at a sam donald. He needs to take intra incremental steps and just improve his accuracy because he creates a a lot of plays with his legs if he's able to do that the bill's gonna win some football games if he's not able to do that if he stays on the same level that he was last year which was okay but not much more than that bills are going to start evaluating quarterbacks again and and you hate to say that after two years they're going to have to look at it and say all right. Maybe this guy is never going to be accurate. You can't have an inaccurate quarterback. In the national football league you will never win and like i said for the jets six touchdowns one interception in the last four games so he's there. He's got more weapons. He's got bell as they ask pittsburgh of the whether or not they missed last year. Don't kid yourself they did all i heard was james connor james. They misled me on bell. Let me tell you and the bills are going running back by committee shady mccoy gone. I don't think he isn't anything left but you look at the weapons they add added added and the fact that they tried to upgrade their offensive line. Got ryan kalil at out of retirement colegio. Somali from oakland jets are going to be better. I i think they're going to contend for a playoff spot. I really do but what they got off to a good start this week up in buffalo rams in the panthers wraps. Come in the east i the storyline obviously his can and cam newton play and that's what it's gonna come down to and what kind of super bowl hangover. We'll los angeles rams. Have you know they got that quarterback signed to a long term deal then make the argument don't make the argument doesn't really matter whether or not he's worth the money he's got. The money signed the contract. The storyline with the los angeles rams is todd gurley. How much do you get out of them because if you've got to put it strictly early on the shoulders of jared goff that's at least at this point in his career. It's not going to happen and one of the things i i understand why the player did it but considering how much money the rams laid out i. I was very surprised that they didn't retain c. J. anderson who they picked up last year off of waivers and why they didn't give him a better deal it. I i was very surprised on on that because they had a little thunder and lightning thing going he absolutely took the burden off todd gurley and considering girly fragile health at this point in time. I wasn't really comfortable with the rams leading him walk well well they did so. That's just the way it goes panthers on the other hand. It's cam newton christian mccaffrey. They're going to stack the box. Walks are mccaffrey and they're gonna make cam newton. Throw deep and let's see if he's able to throw it. He's got one of the best if not the best offensive coordinator and the history and national football league norv turner. They're saying he's healthy. They're saying there's limitations. We're gonna find out. I think one of the biggest adjustments and i wouldn't be surprised if mccaffrey has two thousand yards from scrimmage this year overall between receiving yards and rushing yards wouldn't surprise me at all. He has to be the focus of their offense. He does and cam. Newton has to run the football less because they're gonna aim at that shoulder..

"I don't understand why you wouldn't if you're experiencing. This listen stuff happens bins. It's not great but that i'm balding but you know what keeps done a darn good job of keeping what i still have so highly encourage did you to check it out. Let's get to the last year evan and these are the below average or just piss poor okay below average. I've i've got the browns i put him in that category now the jets and the bucks i will give the jets credit. I don't think i can remember a team team. Adding guys like ryan. Kalil and alex lewis in the first week of training camp so we'll see how it shakes out for that but they're at least doing that and if he's healthy assembly remains one of my favorite players in the n._f._l. You wanna talk about violent. Just watch number seventy. It left guard for the jets. He is not messing around. He is trying to take your soul. He does not care if he embarrasses you and in front of your family in the world i love i love that guy. It's funny because i love dude for the bucks to their center and left guard ryan jensen and ali maher pet ryan jensen will also try to choke you you out to oblivion. I'll what's funny. Evan certain franchise think about how many starters there are in the n._f._l. That used to be baltimore. Ravens like i think the two meanest off the lime in the league k._o. And ryan jensen are both former raisins and both those guys i think k._o. Was a second second round. Pick jensen was like a fifth round. Pick sir teams know what the hell they're doing so just do and the ravens draft these guys how come the ravens the only one out here the draft mean guys guys help trust me then you've got evan the poor teams i mean the bengals they lost thirty two best offensive lineman joe williams clint boling before the season even started and they weren't even going to be a good offensive line to begin with. We're going to be below average probably and their two guys guys aren't playing. That's a problem i'm fascinated by the arizona cardinals and cliff kings berries preferred wide splits holy crap grabbed. I've seen some endzone copy of that good luck to the center if they're going to keep the splits that wide teams are going to put their best player their best pass rusher like aaron right over the center and that guy is going to have a major major problem if they're going to keep the split stat white. I'm glad they're doing it because i think it's got fascinating. Oh line scientific experiment. I wouldn't be glad they were doing it. If i was to serve the cardinals you got the dolphins they basically dolphins. Friends are laremy tunsil and the problems. I mean the the rest of the guys. It's not good but tonsil is and finally to houston texans. I can't remember ever seeing this where a team was this bad at a position and did nothing really of consequence to fix it. They drafted titus howard. He's not ready. Bill brian says mac khalil left tackle. Okay you know i don't no matter scharping we'll be ready. It's a bunch of journeymen guys or guys. I'm not even sure zell habits your if and when the texans cut him it's ugly. They found a way to win ten games last year though so you know what maybe it's is important as we like to think it is or maybe to shawn watson and deandre hopkins and j._j. Watt and clowney are that good. They're the team that should trade for trent williams in my mind the houston texans should yes absolutely and especially because titus howard has been shown well early the reports at a camp on khalil or just up and down at best brandon has only quality forty starter is nick martin at center for the cardinals especially you talk about as wide splits. You know if they're centers going to be a q shipley. Shipley might be mason cole. Who was there started from last year as a shipley got hurt. Shipley is famous for having super short arms. You know like twenty nine inch arms and my goodness if they're doing the wide splits around him with those short arms like that's gonna even put them in more of a disadvantage so yeah. There is an extremely interesting test case as offensive entity this year and <hes> yeah. It's like a boomer bus proposition opposition. I could see it going real well. You know i could see them kind of doing something different than benefiting from that but i could also see it going like we saw the the other night where it's an absolute disaster outstanding as always good questions good comments..

"She's i've a package aca just six forty seven to start to get concerned. What package is delivered but she apparently just fired up for the n._f._l. Season as anybody else so you know obviously dorothy is is gonna be the deciding factor on how long gays last year how good the jets can be this season. I think why so many are high on on darnold in partly why the market went from seven wins two seven point six on the jets is the lack of help darnold had last year. You know like jeremy armie. Bates was a dud he was too predictable in the plaque on too conservative and maybe it comes from that opening game where you see darnold throwing across his body and it gets even he does pick six. That's how you start. The season either way like darnell was just forced into too many third and longs situations jets were third worst in the n._f._l. Third-down down distance at eight yards to go darnold dealt with a slew of injuries to the receiving court to jets were eleventh most injured receiver group. The receiver group dropped dropped. The tenth most passes in the n._f._l. But i think even with all that it was the jets offensive line that was the worst and adjusted line yards and stuff rate that it didn't help him right so it's like you have this rookie quarterback. It's the youngest starter in n._f._l. History at the position he's being thrown into the fire and he doesn't even have a ground. I'm game to lean on so you know. The off. Season comes around in the jets. Go out make the trade for <hes> assembly from baltimore didn't have a good year last year but if he can kind of return to that like two thousand fourteen to two thousand seventeen form. I think that's a good get partly. Why if you've done some reading adam gates was so pissed with the g._m. Is he wanted to spend the money they use on lake on bell to go out and sign matt paradis at center which was a massive hole and then joe douglas comes over the new g._m. I don't know if he's going to be completely on the same page with all the time but he recognized the same problem that gay we saw and so they had to go out and lure ryan kalil out of retirement to play center. Khalil's been dealing with shoulder and neck issue for like the last three seasons. I know he'd gutted edited out last year but the previous two seasons the only played a grand total of fourteen games so it's vital that that khalil stays healthy the tight end position is a little bit in limbo to chris herndon. I think he's a guy that can really come on this season. He showed some promise but he's got a four-game suspension looming other talking about hopefully getting that reduced down to two games. He's in the appeal process. You look at some of the weapons they have. I like them gaces. Ben like clamoring about robbie anderson since the day arrived. They know he's trying to get robbie more touches hutches. I think he believes robbie to dynamic just to be like this fly route receiver. I've heard this before from robbie anderson. I want to see him. Go on this from robbie anderson before know this about robbie. I think he produces acing. I don't actually have a direct line so you guys must get some mischief together. <hes> <hes> invite me to that kind of party of listen. I i think with with robbie. It's like you know he's a deep threat guy so it's boomer bust you know if pure fantasy guy some weeks. He's putting up monsters other weeks. He's not and i think that's why gays trying to get them incorporate into the offense more whether it's end around quick passes comebacks things of that nature. I also think that this offense is going to be a little bit faster. You would hope right everything i was being told about. How gas was operating. The dolphins offense was it was slow because he knew he didn't have the talent around him. He actually wanted to <hes> increase the variance by shortening games and i think he accomplished that a little bit <hes> fifty five offensive snaps. The dolphins averaged last season. That's fifteen percent below league average..

"So I watched the NFL draft last night. I mean, as you said, you wouldn't make it through the first nine picks. Oh, really? You made it through Oliver Oliver. Yeah. I was really disappointed that the Detroit Lions didn't take him. But they didn't. They never take anybody. Good. So why start now right? Is that the lament of the Detroit Lions, it's not eternal lament? Also, Amanda the Texans fans because the the Texans have always been known for being real smart in the draft. Either the guy they really wanted wasn't there. So when it came to pick number twenty three they picked Titus Howard, offensive tackle, Alabama state and people going who. Who? Anyway, here's the the the people give out grades for the NFL draft. Give it a d plus on that pick says whatever the Texans pick over the first three rounds. We'll check to see if they're finally addressing their critical needs are just ignoring them the way, they usually do. Texan dressing critical needs updating they had the worst pass protected in the NFL last year allowing a league high sixty two sacks finishing dead last in football, outsiders adjusted sack rate metrics, so far they've all they've done about this in the off-season to former Panthers left tackle Ryan Kalil who's all either to injure to play always or struggling to play through injuries. Howard, the guy they did draft is an example of a standard issue small program, standout left tackle, he's six. Six. Three eleven is a big guy. Converted high school quarterback in basketball player quick feet. He absorbed more blows than he delivers has a chunky backpedal. So he needs a lot of work. Basically what they're saying is this. He's a project. Yes. You don't normally pick a project in the first round pick somebody who's ready to play. And I don't know that the Texans did that. But hey, maybe maybe it'll turn out to be. Maybe it doesn't take too long to work on a chunky backpedal. Don't know. I've never had a chunky thing. Maybe I think I've lived with one. Chunky backpedal. All right. Recognize what that is. That's the base divert. Traffic.

"It actually turned out to be great win win. We got the real Rio set the jets Carolina taking John sin and Ryan Kalil in the second round. So certainly they team reach an agreement in principle with Arizona to say, hey, if Josh Rosen is available. We'll trade pick x now we also want to get a fiscal done ahead of time because we wanna know that Josh Rosen passer physical. We're comfortable with the contract. And now we plan our are the rest of our draft strategy from there. But what is it? What is the value now? Why am I reading that? He all of a sudden people are talking about a third round pick for Rosen because people know that ever Zona cannot kinda Murray and Joshua's and that will be toxic in a quarterback room value. This is like driving the car off the lot and all of a sudden losing ten thousand dollars worth of value. Josh rosen. Maybe maybe just a second round pick maybe a late first round pick. But I think it's more likely to be a day to pick for Josh Rosen, perhaps the deal is made formal on Friday sometime before we get going with rounds two and three crazy, but I would feel but I would say this they could maybe trade him sometime after the draft. But before the start of the season when maybe there's an injury. So feel why with you I think timing is they have a little bit more flexibility. I don't think they would have Rosen and Murray on their team on opening day. The I understand that. And look at all you need, regardless of how desperate you are to trade him. And I understand that piece of it is you just need more than one team interested, and it sounds to me make share like they have more than one team interested. Yeah. But sounds like only to potentially in which is concerning. I mean, you really want. Want to have four or five teams interested, and maybe there are and I'm just not hearing the right information. But I think you have to be patient. If you're if you're Zona, and you decide the collar is your guy you've got to be patient. You want to get the deal you want to get it done. You wanna move him? I get it. But if you're not going to get the right money if you're gonna third round pick hold onto them. I agree wait until someone gets injured in training camp. And then move them when teams are desperate because that seems to me like then you get some of the leverage back right now feels like Arizona because the whole league knows if they are going to take Murray, they have no leverage and their teams are working memory. Okay. Let me think back to one other thing here because I brought up toying Haskins earlier. And it's no secret. What I think of join Haskins, I stake, my entire reputation as a draft analyst, which I have none on the fact that this guy is going to be a great player. You're getting better green. Okay. Well, we'll see. So anyway, here's my point. I bring up doing Haskins earlier and feel tells me that people don't like him because his arm is too. Good thana. Bam tells me people don't like him because his receivers to open so help me. What exactly is it that people don't like about twain Haskins? I like him. I believe he's the second best quarterback in this class. I would take him in the top fifteen. Okay..

"Time to be alive because ladies and gentlemen. It's craft week. And we are all excited about heading down Nashville Thursday for the start of the draft Thursday, Friday, Saturday going to be on ESPN and ABC this year. So you can't get away from it just know that you will be completely immersed in our draft experience. So breaking down. We'll get to the NBA what happened over the weekend just a little bit. But we're delighted to be joined in studio by now boy, a former NFL GM might Tenenbaum joining us giving us the straight talk. Brought to you by straight talk wireless. Best phones, best networks, no contracts. He's also very good hiker a couple of years ago. NFL Mike's family and Adam schefters family all wanna high competitive peak. Right. We did. And I think the verb. I survived it. I wouldn't say accelerate say more pinnacle peak, I have a place just few. Pinnacle back part of that is called the Widowmaker back part of that one. Yeah. Well. Survivals the name. Gotta get there. And by the way, as a GM in a coach better survived the draft and doing it the right way. Because that is a big problem. Mike, I have labeled this part of the season lying season in the NFL. Right. You know, how this goes? There's a lot of things that are put out there that may not be accurate or maybe misleading to sort of help your team in the position you are in the player you wanna draft. So how loose with the truth? Were you at times when dealing with the media, not saying, you're flat outline, but maybe throwing smokescreens one way or the other, you know, coach Parcells my mentor. He so he's talking about he's Mr. T, we're in the business of collecting information, not exchanging it, and truly that's what you're doing this time of year. You're really trying to collect information. And we're just telling a story about Durell Rivas going back to the seventy and Marty hurting ironically who still the GM and the Panthers we had talked a couple of times about, hey, we're at twenty five we'd like to move up to fourteen for one player, and we basically had an agreement principle for what was going to turn out to be our first round pick, which was twenty. Five and are around which was fifty nine. If this one player was there turned out to be a great win win. We were able to go up and get rebus. They actually drafted in the first round John zombies. Linebacker and then Ryan Kalil. At fifty nine. So it was a great win win. And that was just an example of hey, three days before the draft. Here's actually what we're doing. We're making calls, and there was a lot of trust there where you know on the clock. He was going to ask some more or we were going to try to trade up for less when do call start like that. And how much can you actually pull off before your back's against the wall? And you're on the clock during the draft really goes back to trust. Because Marty was a guy that I done a lot of work with. So those calls really worked for us here a little bit too. Well, that's probably why. So those calls are actually starting right now. Thursday's the first day of the draft. So yesterday today, you're five ten spots ahead five ten spots below. You're having those conversations you try and collect information. And I say like when you have the privilege of one of these jobs. You're the point guard of information you're going back to your head coach you're going back to your owner and say, okay, hey, we had three cores that year. We had Aaron Ross Leon hall from Michigan. And we said, right? We want to get one of these three corners. And here's the price. It's gonna take a we comfortable giving up our second round pick to go up and get the real reebus felt good about it. It was Coachman Jeanie. And we obviously went ahead. And that that's a trade that worked out talking to Mike tantamount with us in studio here on Golic and wingo. How often does it go down like that? And then how often because we see so many of these big draft day trades. How often can it just be certain things happen that we're outside of your control that all of a sudden you're reacting to on the fly. Yeah. That happened a couple of years ago. Mike with Laremy Tunsil. You know, we're sitting there. Oh, yeah. With the thirteenth pick in the draft and Tennessee, you know, they had the first pick for a long time. And everyone's like, oh, they're gonna take Tunsil. They need to tackle. And we're sitting there at thirteen just hoping to get a good player. Adam gates, his first year, Chris cours, Joel manager. And then also like, oh, my God eight nine ten and unfortunately, St. Rosser owner, case grit were also right there, and we're like, wow. This is unbelievable opportunity. Obviously he had made a mistake. But you know, we fell back on our preparation, and we've got what we felt was the best player in the draft at thirteen for those that don't know the Laremy Tunsil story that was the one where former agent or social of his put out the video of him smoking weed in a gas mask bomb, basically, that's why I say draft. That's why I say the draft is the ultimate reality. And so he dropped to in that time period when he was dropping did you call him and ask him about it. Or did you just go on your your research? You no, Mike scrape point. We were getting as much information as we could we felt good about our preparation and our sources we reach out to him and his represented. And it was a good kid who had made a mistake. Now you fast forward. He's playing forty four games. Great. And he's a great teammate. Good example, too of like, hey, when you're young person sometimes you make mistakes that happens. But when you look at all the information, we had we felt really good that we knew that. This guy was an elite player, and we can get him in our building. You know, it would be good move for us. So with that in mind because no one was prepared to see that video when it was released and the way it came out in twenty seventeen in Chicago. I always call the draft alternate reality television show because there is no script. Nobody knows what's going to happen. How weird is it? Like starting now in going through Saturday when you have literally no idea what may or may not pop up in the call. You may or may not get. Yeah. That's exactly right. And one thing I can tell you for sure that's one hundred percent certain is if you're seeing there eight or six players you love, right? Correct. Twelve there's ten that you have to have it always works out that way. So you just want to be prepared within reason that hey, let's go up a couple of spots. Maybe we'll move back. But when you want to move back the phone never rings like it always seems to work out that way. So it is the ultimate reality show. That's what makes it fun at. Yo you just want to come out of it. We always say, hey, let's get you know, four or five really good players at a good fit for a locker room. And if anything that happens, that's great. But they're so little of this that you actually can't control. I'm so interested. You talked about falling back on your preparation with a guy like Laremy Tunsil. And as important as tackles are they're not quarterback. So we. Know you're judged differently. When it comes back to vision. What is the difficulty in Scott a quarterback because we're hearing all this stuff about Daniel Jones on the giants. Now, a guy who has climbed up draft boards almost inexplicably. What is it about that position? That makes it so difficult for front offices coaches to all come together and agree on Mike. I think it's a developmental position. And he just don't get enough reps. And I give Sean McVeigh and the Rams so much credit because if you look at Jared Goff when he was drafted. He was drafted by defensive coach Jeff Fisher his first year five touchdown center interceptions. He came in. He had every right to say, hey, you know, what this guy is a good enough. We're gonna move on. But in your to he goes from five touchdowns to twenty eight. They went eleven games and there were three quarterbacks in the first round, Mahomes Trubisky and Watson, and he passed it all three, and if I'm Steve and cliff Kingsbury, I'm looking at Josh Rosen the same way I'm saying that this guy he won three games as a starter. It was below average, obviously. But in year two I got cliff Kingsbury now an offensive. Head coach and why not try to you know, coach him and get him. Better. A thousand percent agree. I liked Roseanne coming out of college. I couldn't agree more as far as Mike just brought up Daniel Jones in the case. We're at right now when you as a team zero on someone and say, okay, we have a quarterback need. We think he's a franchise quarterback. But you have to picks you chance that that a guy like that is going to be there at seventeen or you just say everything else be damned we know. It's probably too high for them. But we gotta take him at six. We think he's our guy. Yeah. I think if you go back to two thousand fourteen I think that's really instructive for the giants. We look at what the Vikings did. They took Anthony Barr at nine, and then they came back and took teddy Bridgewater at thirty two. Right. You know, if you go back a few years know Baltimore did that in three when they took Terrell suggs. And then they came back and took bowler. So there's a lot of examples or even the Browns have done that a couple of times. So I think you gotta play the board. If you look at the giants they were thirtieth last year in sack so they can get a pressure play. Or at six where the draft is loaded and then maybe come back and take the Jones at seventeen. Now. You you pair that with Barclay you get site ler. Like, I think that's a better more efficient way of going because I think the strength of the draft is in the front seven. So to me if you get that pressure played six that's a great place to start because there are a couple of on the quarterback needy teams ahead of seventeen you have to be ready to maybe jump up if you really want Jones after that. Yeah. No doubt about like, I've always been a philosophy. If you like a player, and it checks all the boxes. Character ability. Go up and get them it. Listen, it exactly. Right. Because at the end of the day, if he if he turns out to be what you thought he is then nobody cares. That's exactly right. I listen. We know you gotta run because we gotta do some other stuff we stop and by Mike Tannenbaum, whether it's by the way, he'll be part of the SPN radios draft covering all three days ghosts, get out get out of available to heighten anytime. Skills are experience. Underrated movie up the draft hikers..

"We just add Ernie Johnson stopped by Shaquille O'Neal is stopping by in our number three. We're getting closer and closer to toe meeting ball here for Super Bowl fifty three between the patriots. And the Rams later on this hour a guy who did beat the patriots ups part of the Pittsburgh Steelers effort juju Smith Schuster going to stop by. But I to my left in our great cavalcade of guests has now brought Christian McCaffrey into our midst on the rich Eisen show. That's an applause line for you, folks. From the Carolina Panthers, and courtesy of USAA the official NFL salute to service partner. Good to see you Christian McCaffrey. Good to see appreciate what was the difference view season two to season one. It looked like you were a little bit more in the flow of things this year to say the least. Yeah, I would say lot slowed down for me. I'll tell you. What was tough was my my rookie year going into my rookie year because of the the rule where you can't participate in any team activities until your school technically graduates was tough. So I got experienced the benefit of going through TA's and going through different mini camps. Whereas my rookie. I didn't. And I tell you what that that had a huge impact that was one of the things where I just I got more comfortable, I got bigger, I got faster got stronger and. Overall, just felt better felt the everything kind of slowed down for me. Again, it looked it looks like they were just going to ride Christian McCaffrey every single game. It seemed like you were the focus would that be an accurate assessment of the game plan? Oh, yeah. I mean, I I would say. I don't I wouldn't say, you know, going into the game. We were we were planning on this or that. I think some of the games ended up being that way. I think some some also didn't and some other guy stepped up, and you know, we have such a talented team at the ball can really go anywhere. You know, when we're healthy when our guys are feeling good. You know, we got a great team. It's tough to win in the NFL. And he saw that with us late in the stretch. Yes. Multiple games. We're losing by by six rounder. And despite all that were one game away from from being in the playoffs. So definitely a frustrating. Second half of the season. But knowing that we got the guys we got the coaches, and and we overall have have a great attitude in the locker room is something to look forward to in the future. Well, it's awesome to see that. You'd think that you have a great attitude that you skipped your bowl game. And anybody who does that has a horrible attitude hair? No chance of doing anything in the NFL like most receptions by running back in a single season as you have. So you're you're breaking that mold Russian. Yeah. Appreciate it. You'd have thought I committed a crime. And when I did it now, everybody's everybody's doing it getting applauded for it. It's just the norm now. So you're the George Washington at this. You're the first across Delaware. So what do you think of when you hear coaches say well this kid's skipping a bowl game? And I don't think that that's going to really play very well on the next level. You don't want to take a kid who skipped the bowl games. Like, you just did. Yeah. Yeah. I mean years ago, I would say each and every decision in in any time. You look at a situation where players given the volume you have to look at it from from their decision. I made my decision whether or not it's right for anyone else is up to them. And I'm in my decision, and I like to think it worked out. And I know what my attitude was. And I know my reasons, and you know, some guys have have their reasons it might be different for mine, but I would say at the end of the day, you gotta look yourself in the mirror and be able to tell yourself that you made the best decision for yourself and for your future. And if you can do that, then then it's the right decision. What did David Shaw? Oh, we had some tough conversations. I think you know in the long run, coach Osborne. Great been very supportive of mean or still keep in touch with them today. Definitely. It was a tough decision was tough. For me. Is the hardest decision. I've ever had to make. I went back and forth. It I will always. Not. I don't wanna say regret it. But I will always miss that opportunity. And and I'll always be mad at myself for that moment. But but in the once again in the long run and seeing how it all played out. I I can't say I made the wrong decision. And that could be true for some people. I took a I took a risk and happy. I did. But but as far as coach Chicago's man, we did have some tough conversations, and I'm happy that we we've remained close. Yeah. I mean, he talks very well of you, by the way off camera just say, you know, when he sits next to me on the draft Senate last couple of years, obviously when you were up for being draft, you wound up being a top ten pick that guy if I'm an owner in the NFL, I sent him a check, and I find you the new head coach, I sent him a check and say, right. You're right. You're amount in it David I want you to be my head coach. You just doesn't seem wanna do that. You think you would ever do something like that come into the NFL, man? I have no idea, but I think. He ever did. He'd be great. He's he's unbelievable. Obviously, he's an unbelievable leader mentor as an unbelievable person, but you look at his resume coaching. And it's pretty remarkable to see what he's done, and you know, Stanford's a tough school to recruit to and to to to have the success. He's had with, you know, with the guys that we have is been been awesome. You know every year racking up the top players in the nation. Somehow he he gets them to go there. And it's it's been really fun to see. And and I was just very lucky. I got to be a part of his his is run there and your brother Dylan plays for his predecessor direct. Yeah. Now, Michigan, right? How he he burst against Penn State. And then went away is he gonna play a little bit more. I hope so man, I I really hope. So I think he's, you know, honestly, I sometimes I have to be an honest evaluator. Yes. And so I look at it unbiased. And man, he's got he's got everything I would want quarterback. So I think he's got an unbelievably bright future ahead of him. And I. Can't can't wait to see what he does. He do. We know what the new offense coordinator thinks I'm trying to get his launching. Yes. Not sure I gotta hop on the phone with them. But okay, you know. If I was him. I mean, he he is is he faster than you. I'll tell you what he's not fastest McAfee. If you were to tell me before I think he had a long seventy five yard run against somebody is I think it's. Remember, all of these things and. And if you were to tell me before the game, he he's gonna run one seventy five yards out of thought, you're nuts. But he's he's continued to prove me wrong. He's not faster than me though. He is fast. Okay. Is fast. All right. When your dad was playing was he faster than you? See if you ask anybody in our family who the fastest is who's the best high school basketball player in any of these questions each and every person will say themselves, and we'll go on forever. It's gotten very personal in our house. Oh, I'm gonna I'm gonna go ahead and continue sticking with my answer. Okay. With myself. My older brother has the forty. He's around the fastest forty out of all of us. So so he went he wins the time forty now we didn't all around on the same clock. The circumstances aren't the same. Sure. One of these days. We'll have to put a simul Cam up or a race or something to make it even I don't think we have video from when your dad ran it. Good enough. I know not high standard definition from back in that day. Seriously, black and white Christian McCaffrey here on the rich Eisen show. C J Anderson is in the Super Bowl, and he had I guess what? Would you call it a Cup of coffee with your team this year? How how long j around your team he was around for? So I I mean, I forget when when we release them, but. Tell you what. I mean. He's got an unbelievable attitude. And and it's been it's been fun to see I was lucky to be able to pick his brain a little bit. And you know, obviously he's had success in this league. He's gonna pro bowls. He's one Super Bowl and being able to pick his brain. And see where that's coming from. What was really cool for the time. We had you know, no one was surprised when when he got picked up, and obviously see the impact he's had has been pretty pretty fun to watch. It's been amazing to see how a dynamic. He has been with girly. How do you see Super Bowl fifty three out Christian McCaffrey? Oh, man. I hope they both lose. That's not. I don't know. I think you know, it's very tough to bet against a team like the patriots and Tom Brady and. But then you look at LA with the firepower, they have all over the place. So I just hope it's a competitive game. I'm gonna give you the politically correct and unacceptable. This is not acceptable answer. But I mean, you know, when you when you take a look at it being football guy that you are smart guy as you pointed out in a very passive aggressive way that you couldn't get the training camp time. We're minicamp Stanford too busy. Oh, that's that's deep into the NFL row. That's not a stand off. You're pointing I already I don't even go to school restraining. So do you you just point blank? You think patriots? Because a Brady is up. What you're saying? Now, once again, I I mean, I'll I'll I'll say, you know, it's hard to hard to betting, Tom. That's what I'll say, okay. Cam shoulder. What can you tell me about it? Obviously, it looks like he's getting a tightened up a little bit. How how how much do you think that affect your offense throughout the season Christian? Well, I think. You know, obviously, he was playing through a lot. I think there's a lot of people who played through a lot. And I think that's league-wide. You know, you're not gonna find the team's not playing with some injuries here and there, but I can't tell you this that he's he's one of the toughest guys I've ever played with in my life, and he's willing to risk everything for for the team. And I know that he's gonna take every single situation extremely seriously. And we have an unbelievable staff in Carolina. And so he's on the right path. And he's he's hopefully, hopefully, he'll come back healthier than ever thinks you think is gonna play anymore. He's one of my favorite people. He's the best. I I hope I hope he does. And he's he's been an unbelievable mentor, obviously has placed speaks for himself over the past few years. And you know, he he always says he's getting older and older. But I don't wanna hear because I know he still has it. And if you can stay healthy, man, he's he's a heck of an impact on our team to amend that to he's one of my favorite people not named Ryan Kalil because Ryan gets very sensitive. If I don't mention know. Very sensitive got like Leuke Klay was a guest on our show at the Super Bowl last year. And he got a rich Eisen show jacket that he wore and I got a text from Ryan Kalil about photograph saying, where's my job? So that sounds about right. Don't you think? So I think I think Ryan. Obviously offense lineman. Don't get enough credit. But I think Ryan is a is a hall of Famer hall of fame person. And I think he was the biggest biggest leader slash impact on our on our team as far as the last two years. I've really are you saying that because he's a sensitive guy, you really, well, he's sensitive, and he would he would definitely texting you after if if I didn't say that. But now, no. But I absolutely mean, he's he's salt of the earth me, and it doesn't get better than people on the Panthers. And you are one of them serve. The salutes is service partner of the National Football League USAA and the wounded warrior project, awarded a military member a trip of a lifetime to the Super Bowl right here. And you are guiding this military member. Yes. Yeah. It's been an absolute blast being able to work with USA project. We sent sergeant Somerset and his wife, Sean is also military gave in tickets. So it's been a great week being able to partner with them..

"So in no way, shape or form. The giants go, you know, let's tack on up to four voidable years. Allies contract convert some portion of his two thousand nineteen salary into signing bonus. From lower the cap it from twenty three point to that way. I think they just need to stay away from that. And if he plays for them next season he's off the books in twenty twenty and it's a fresh points late. So perhaps smarter on a long term basis to just swallow the cap hit for two thousand and nineteen rather than try to extend him, you know, and and using what you know, what some people call, you know, those those dummy years or voidable years. Yeah. I I wouldn't go that route even though Gettleman will really, rob Rogers and Carolina had to do that. Because he inherited such a cap missed the cab guys been there forever, rob Rogers. But they did a lot of vote -able years of contracts just to be able to function the giants aren't in that situation. But I stay away from that whole concept and just had a clean cap with him. And just wipe the slate clean and be able to amass as much talent around whatever quarterback. It is presumably Wayne half and number six on a go forward basis beginning in twenty twenty. Interesting. You mentioned Dave Gettleman, and that was actually something that I did want to ask you about. If I remember correctly in Carolina, you know, Dave did have some issues with the salary cap. When you look at the giants. I mean should giants fans worry about Gettleman ability to manage the cap. I mean, he did give a wet. He did give out a couple of what you would call bad contracts. You know last last off season during free agency. I'm thinking about Jonathan Stewart which wasn't a big big contract. But still was probably a bad idea. And maybe the Patrico. Mommy deal was that a deal in Carolina where there wasn't much. He could do about it. Or you know, when you look back on it. Did he perhaps not manage it as well as he could have? So when he got to Carolina was a bad cap situation. So. Playing the restructure game. With the make sure I'm right Khalil's. Ryan Kalil, Jordan gross is a world multiple things with Jonathan Stewart's contract and on down. The line was something that needed to be done. I never understood the original.

"It's just kind of them talking on the sideline chopping it up on the sideline. We don't even have confirmation that. That's what they're gonna find out that you will have confirmation because everyone listening to this knows how absurd this situation as I invite them to tweet what situation. I mean. I think a lot of. I know what you're talking about. 'cause you're the only one who really cares still holding onto some move on its prop. I invite all these fifteen year olds who've never seen the helmet catch to tweet at me. Me as well. Moving on the Panthers. They have a big issue quarterback. My goodness. Cam Newton dealing once again, as we know with a what could be a serious shoulder injury that would require surgery and the team's new owner, David Tepper address local media, and he could not say with any certainty that Cam Newton would be ready for twenty nineteen and leaves the door open. Mark that Cam Newton could miss twenty nineteen if he has another shoulder surgery the door is open for that as a scenario and that would be an incredibly big setback for this franchise. I mean, it's important to note that he wasn't offering facts he was speculating because there is a wide degree of possibilities of what could happen if as we approach February. And then beyond your quarterback is pulled into a shoulder surgery of some sort. And it does you know, there are remnants of what happened with Andrew luck there and other. Stuff if that were to happen beyond the biggest loser being Cam Newton. I think it would be a very tough situation for Ron Rivera to have to go in the next year with something other than Cam Newton under center more to be seen. Hey might they would thuddingly be in the quarterback market for. I think is like Bridgewater that could be a one year solution or something 'cause 'cause you'd have to you'd have to not wanna throw away the season. This is a team. It's been a little under the radar is in dramatic overhaul Thomas Davis. They announced that he's not going to be resigned. I mean, this is one of the franchise pillars. Ryan Kalil is expected to retire. One of the franchise pillars. It sounds like Julius peppers might not be back. And then you have this. Cam Newton news. It's just a team with a lot of change going on right now. The let's head over to coordinator corner starting with the Cleveland Browns who have their head coach and Freddie kitchens, but they also have a new OC Todd machen who was in the running for. Several head coaching jobs did not land a job. But he lands in Cleveland as the OC with the Browns. And he this guy is a lot of respect in the league, Mark. Freddie kitchens. Obviously an offensive minded guy. I believe he's calling the plays. But mocking is a good guy to have in the room. I think if there's one encouraging overall result from the kitchens hires that he's hired so far very strong staff. And I think the Todd monk in if you look at his roots. He's got air raid roots? He's got he's dipped in college concepts as kitchens, and it's another added mind to go with Baker Mayfield. It's not someone that's going to press to take them in a different direction..

"Now, he needs a really good defensive staff to go with them. But he's a bright offense of mind. And I think that darnold gonna need somebody like that. I think the jets, you know, Mike McKay is the general manager he's going to control everything again. You know, he's been there. He got hired him bowls came together bowls gone. Mike stays, you know, they're gonna they you know, when you look at the jets, I I think anybody in they got a lot of money to spend as they're a bad team. Even the free agents last year. I mean Tremaine Johnson did not play. Well, may they cut they cut they cut Terrell prior? They signed him as a free agent. Isaiah crowell. Very disappointing. I mean, they've got. Some issues with that team, and they're going to have to fix that. And Mike's going to have to say that to people in the interview about his role because he obviously picked all these players he and Mike ho- ham. Brian Hyman nigger are going to have to handle that when they when they sit down with coaches, and I I think, you know, is it a college coach, I don't know. But I think it's going to be an offensive coach because they need darnold. They need to get somebody to handle Barnum yet. So we'll keep an eye on that as that kind of rotates around. I mean, it is interesting because I think Sam darnold is a unique talent. And it does seem like they are very excited about the future with darnold their New York. So they AFC's there's a chance for someone to take that job there. And maybe try to start something new as you know, we may be see the latter part of the dynasty with New England Patriots as a chance for a team to make a run. They're talking about coaches who are safe and not on the job in block. Despite some of the reports that they may be could be John horrible with. The ravens comes out that on December twenty first he would remain head coach in twenty nineteen and they're working on a possible contract extension will. We'll see how that plays out another guy. Doug, we Rhone. You talked about teams that were able to keep the same infrastructure at the top the Jacksonville Jaguars despite missing the playoffs after making AFC championship a year ago. They're going to keep Doug Marrone as head coach. They're going to keep Dave Caldwell general manager in they're going to keep Tom Coughlin on staffs of the big three there in Jacksonville will stay on and continued to run operations. There says something to keep an eye on his move forward in the next season. And also the Carolina Panthers. In a lot of people were speckling. There's a chance Ron Rivera in this Panthers team could could move away from each other with David Tepper taking over as the new owner. They come out against the saints in this game. Despite Camaro doesn't play drew Brees doesn't play. We got you know, young guys out there. Cameron Artis Payne is probably the biggest star of this game. But the Panthers showed up played well in their finale. And then they probably will be saying goodbye to Ryan Kalil, Julius peppers and potentially Thomas Davis is some of the big names out there that have been around the Panthers forever. They played hard in that game. And Ron Rivera apparently will stick around. Moving forward with the Panthers. So those three coaches all and situations where they were continued to stay with their teams, and you can tell that those franchises believing the kosher that they have installed in build at the moment. Is there any one of those three Lombardi to kinda sticks out to you or your possibly surprised that they are willing to come back?.
