"Kinda love him and television and movies and on Brooklyn nine nine that's back and on NBC, just like America's got talent, the champions that he hosts but long before all that. He was an eleventh round selection than nineteen Ninety-one NFL draft. Good to see you Terry crews. Unreal. That is it is a crazy journey. You have taken, sir. Crazy crazy. We have talked about it before previous show. But I want to unpack it a little bit here. So you were the out of western Michigan rice, right gone. A walk on on are you from the state of Michigan? I'm from Flint Michigan born and raised walked onto the football team. How to five hundred dollars art scholarship to western to western Michigan. Okay. But you know, after a year and a half earned, my scholarship and went on and got drafted in NFL, which was crazy athlete, man. I was actually a deep is event in college. Okay. Really small to twenty five you know, what I mean just playing against all these big guys some like freely. Randall like spin moves bull. Russia's man. I actually was on the strength team. All what are the national strength team? I'd literally broken, you know, power clean records and different stuff. If I was a strong athletes out, what's. Oh my God. Probably I had I had a four twenty bench. But I ran a four or five forty on athlete. That was the thing. I mean, the only thing I, but this is I couldn't catch. I couldn't I couldn't throw. I could just literally take tremendous amounts of pain. That was my ability. I could really run my head into anything. And that got me on three teams over seven season in years. But I was on the Rams Packers charges. Redskins just jumping all around with my wife and kids Ryan fire like as you're gonna find. Flyer and the NFL Europe league. But before we get to me like I'm looking here. So what was your draft day? Like were you home? I was home. And I thought oh my God. I'm gonna I'm gonna like third round because you know, all all athletes have to have this tremendous amount of entitlement and hubris hit order to get going. My wife was I think, you know, don't say don't say I'm gonna go third round tech around. Man. We waited all day. I had a barbecue all the people. They went home, and it was even mall, and then the next day happen when you had to drive in a couple of days and only got I thought I'm I'm out. I didn't get drafted. I remember this to me. I was sitting on my steps on my mom's house crying, literally tears, and my wife was I hate. Hey, she literally grabs me, she said, listen, this is your dream. This is what you always wanted to do. You know, what you're going to go Free Asia. You're going to do what you gotta do. But you are going to wake up and you're not gonna Bill sorry for yourself. You're gonna make sure you get this out. Right. And you know, what happened the phone rang? I thought this was over. And it wasn't the phone rang. It was the LA Rams. They said you've been drafted in the eleventh while I was like. This is the thing man, you can never give up because you think it's over and it was not over you. So do you remember who was on the phone for the Ronnie Jones, Ronnie Jones linebacker coast LA ran the LA ran ever forget it, man. So ninety one was Dickerson still there. Oh, no. No, no, John Roberts was the coach, right? Jim. Every was the club. I backed up. Kevin green. I was Kevin greens back home on amazing. What was the best people in the world? Let me tell you. What's up? Daddy, was t- kusumoto your buddy. Let's do. He literally talked like a wrestler all this out. But he was so encouraging. He was like, hey, we'll do you think he was and Jackie Slater was on a team. I got the working, but because it was like going in that locker room. Now, I have to say the NFL was a little bit different than when I remember walking into birth thing. I saw was a guy smoke it..

I'll say I gotta be honest with you know, that's not something. I'm ready to not an option right anyway. Here's the problem. I hate Stephen put this out there in public. But. I have always prided myself. I'm being able to say in the morning what the fan is thinking, and what the eagle fan would like to hear because I would like I was turning the radio at six o'clock at UT game on Sunday s waited all year. Mike, God was stolen the playoffs. After all that went on this year. This is a godsend. This is a gift we are coming off five days ago. A historic game that we will reference for the rest of our lives the double join, right? The very last not a dummy here Hollis the very last thing of watch. They here is a talk shows on and tell us that the dreams about end. Less wanna hear them that? I don't today. And yet can I sit here real you work lease over the years have I ever faked that one day. I can show you how. But but going to be. This is very personal what I'm about to do here. Because. Negotiated to how steals this week. Nice. I negotiated the sale of my home in Medford negotiated. The purchase of a home in Philadelphia. Nice. And I spent way way more time looking at the eagles New Orleans Saints game than either of those two personal things. Right. Because while football's more interesting the real estate, and I really wanted to find a way to see the eagles win the game. Yeah. I wanted everything. And I found some good things I found some things that gave me hope number one thing to me is rust lawless can tell you this better than anybody. These saints haven't played a game in three weeks. And when they were playing prior to that, they weren't great last. Great game was the game. They beat the eagles. That's almost two months. I ten games. Drew Brees Ryan fire twenty-something touchdowns and one interception. Right. The last five games. It was a far different offense that they were playing. That's very encouraging, isn't it? Eagles at one six out of seven eagles around them. Roll the completely different places than they were two months ago. That's. Birds. Right. Yeah. The magic man the man who seems only to ensure the greatest pressure Nick foles mcleod's out. How many times this week? I said how the hell are you ever bet against Nick foles? You better gets them. In the big moments. Is he always has been four go from the to make the plight made the play right fought in in to fry in the Super Bowl last year. Down appoint busy make the plight as he earth. They get the first half. Can you bet against that? You can. Your own risk Hollis Thomas has Fletcher Cox ever played better than he has the last month. No has he ever been more dominant in the middle of the line. Then he has in the last month. Man. Can't you look at that? And go. We're in good shape here. What's your will dominate the middle line? And they won't run the ball. Camerin Ingram will be stopped. Breeze will be forced throw there'll be a lot of pressure on him. He's rusty. Maybe sound good happens here and one more factor in our favorite the sproles. Jenkins. Fact, you know, how much you love as it was like if you wanna be happy about anything the fact that he is healthy and the way he's rolling, right? And he's got something to prove to a team to do that that never goes away right house. Hell, no. When when his rear found, the actual our tweets of his wife, Michelle. Oh, yeah. She was bitter. She said someday don't pay for this. Maybe that day is Sunday. Exactly. And and and Jacobson's Jenkins gave Sean the last time you saw Jenkins which join Payton. He he was giving his former coach finger, the fiery, Phoenix, the fiery Phoenix. Anytime anytime, you get your on fire. If you're doing that. Thank yours into this game. Is you've ever been. You're a team leader summit that will will move down across the ranch and the secondary will play back. Yes. And see all that. I go, you know, the revenge factor that might be really rolls didn't play. Dan, how about this one? When you got this big man Jason Peter, and Jason Peters is not even hiding his rancor. Remember, he said this this week. Now, I'm sorry. I didn't set up. I'm sorry. Joe back there. My my mistake. Three four five six back there. I got a. I'm so I'm so sad. I'm picking the same. I'm so sad fake it a little bit more. Do it every I can't can we tells me this story. I it tells me it's real went to this rally last night. Yes. And she tells me how Greece went up there. And just he you know, he is by nature is an eagle, and he got everybody fired energetic. And I went. I wish I could do that today. Greece. Yeah. Last night at the pet pride. He really fired everybody ahead. What's more important to me? Rabbi or reality. You don't live in reality. I am an eagles shirt on is one. Of course. I do. I even went with the long undershirt thing with Larry cool. I did the whole thing but giving back to the good part of this because I wanted to start with this even though I don't take the eagles have any.

"Steelers sack leader, by the way, you went to Kent state. You were on drafted. So so that's amazing. So you're the in in the history of the NFL the Steelers and the cowboy to the biggest in the Packers of the biggest franchises. So I always laugh when I hear this. Oh, Alabama could go toe to toe because there's always one stinker team in the NFL. So you were undrafted. Why was that a small school? It was a d one school, but I was at a small school. Yeah. And that was the that was that was the biggest thing you're playing against competition that not Ohio State is not Alabama. You never on TV. No, no. We we played in the maga- think the biggest game might have played in was against drew Brees in when he was at Purdue. So did you get to go to the senior bowl? No senior bowl. I didn't even get invited to the combine you didn't. You didn't go to the combine. Well, what was your break? They just picked me up as a free agent. You know afterwards. Like, you said everybody's going to get drafted and I was picked up as free agent, and I was basically a package deal. They needed and linebacker in Asian that I was where it was like, I got one, you know, I got this guy to take them both and ended up getting getting sent his Berg. When did you know you could play in the National Football League because you played over in Europe and Dusseldorf for some to a played a plate at Ryan fire and Duesseldorf Germany. I did that in two thousand three two thousand four between those two. And then went through that whole process came back ended up getting released because I went over for Baltimore ended up getting released by Baltimore and picked up by the Steelers like two weeks before training camp. Was there a moment with the Steelers because you're their all time sack leader? Was there a play a moment that you thought the coaches saw that I'm making this team to be honest with you, I was cut so much that you know, I said I'm just gonna go out here. Put my head down grind as hard as I can't do everything that I needed to do. I learned how to play both Outside Linebackers. I learn how to play both inside linebacker positions. Now did the best I could on special teams. And you know, they they ended up keeping me. So that's an amazing story that story and Antonio gates who didn't play college football are two or two of the all time stories when you watch Pittsburgh last night said to start the show, no rents audio gateway. Right. Ken state, Wayne State. He went to Kent state. Do you know him? I don't know him like that. But yeah, we know each other. We're not tighter state's got to do a better job promoting it so athletes. Zack Lambert Jack Lambert went there. Wow. Would you see from the Steelers last night? Assault team that got what they needed to get the win. The win helps to cover up a lot of issues that are still there. Obviously the offense came out. They did a good job of starting off. You know, they scored a lot appoints but the second half came and they did nothing. You know, they didn't score point after same thing with the defense. You know, they came out. You know, like I said before it's his magic turned into picks passer. He started going about sworn, you know, even with that that was three turnovers, I think it was four committed altogether. And you're in a dog fight at the end, you know, just to come out with a three point win. So they did what they need to do with winning. But it's still issues there. Yeah. I said earlier that I've just come to terms with what the Steelers are talented and dysfunctional. And I'm okay. I mean, if I think that the patriot I think of smart and efficient when I think of the Steelers, I think, talented and dysfunctional. There was a play in that game. When a player was barking on the sidelines with a raff, they punted the ball down the one pin Tampa Bay and there's a penalty on it. And I'm like, what are you doing? Like who is that? A Tomlin thing, you know, it it it has to go to the head coach because the head coach is the guy that you know, he he he's supposed to lead these guys. So, you know, the winds the loss is all that, you know, is is is part of him. Because he's the leader of his team. You know, guys in situations like that, you know, have to have to sit back calm down. And really just think about you know, what they're doing before. They do it in a situation where a guy I think just lost lost control of emotion. You know, I'm looking around the NFL right now. And I was saying this earlier today that just the way that works with all the media and stuff like everybody is crushing Jon Gruden but two of the three games they lead going into the fourth. They've been very competitive. Miami's undefeated they gave him a good game. They led the Rams going into the fourth Rams are really good. They could might have kept that if they had MAC. Yeah. They had a pass rush. So when you when you look at the raiders and Baker Mayfield, I kind of I take a step back. And I'm like, I think we love Baker a little too much. And I think we're dumping on Gruden a little too much. I actually think if you look at the raiders schedule over the next eight weeks, they'll figure it out. It gets. I mean garoppolos hurt. Now, they play bam. Josh rosen. The rookie start Verizon. They play them. Thereby by comes up at the perfect spot. They get the colts at home. They get a Seahawks or the battle line at home. I kind of look up and down the raiders when you look at them right now, do they seem dysfunctional with Gruden or do you think they get it together? I don't I don't I don't know if they get it together. I think that when you get Jon Gruden in him being the coast that everybody sees him as you're expecting him to come in near tighten this ship up in get it going and moving in and that hasn't happened. You know, the first thing that happened is you let probably the best defensive player in the game go to Chicago. So that's not really go be helpful when you're losing games in their winning games to right the ship. Can he do it on? I don't know. It seemed to be honest. How would it play in the locker room? If a great player was like, oh, my my concern was how 'cause Khalil Mack known as a good guy. He's a player's player. Not not every players the players player. But he's a team guy. A good, dude. How does that plan locker rooms it, it, it doesn't it depends on how how had all band out. I don't know if it was a issue of Gruden didn't want him more. Issue a good the organization themselves not wanting to do what needed to be done or if he he didn't want to beat her. But if it was he wanted to be there, then that means either the team didn't get it down or the coast in warning there and that won't groove too. Well with with the team, especially if it comes down to the head coach not wanting that person near not wanted him to canoe win in the NFL, if the locker room doesn't like the coach can you win an NFL if the locker room doesn't like the coach, I believe you can I believe you can because at the end of the day, you're there to do a job and your job is loans. The coach is giving you good information. You you have good schemes good plans. Then you could get the job done without liking the coast because you have to win in order to get your ultimate goal, which is a Super Bowl, and you know, beholding embargo. So I believe he can be done who's your favorite coach. Was there? A coach that you loved playing dick lebeau. Okay. Why what did he do dick lebeau treated everybody to say? He he he didn't. He didn't cuss you. He didn't fuss. You he treated a guy that was rookie. He he talked to him treating with the same respect as he did a guy that was dear ten fifteen years. You know, dick lebeau game you to Saint respect at the time that he gave joy porter in. That's something that resonated with me. You know, he didn't he didn't try and cut you up and down because you were a young guy, and he felt like he could get away with it. He loved you like genuinely loves you wanted to play for him. You would do anything for him. You guys anybody that play dick lebeau dig LeBow told you to run through a wall. When you hit that wars, go come down, you do it. Because you believe I mean, you anything he said you would do. And was he the exception? Most coaches, not like not a lot of coaches like did you ever coach you didn't like to play for the I had had library because. Yeah, did not like to play. I did not like him. Let's just say that. And he didn't he he thought he could talk to me any kind of way that he wanted to. So we exchanged words probably led to me being cut. But yeah, I I don't I don't take me and talk down to especially if that's not the way that you talk to everybody else. I really don't take taught me all down to period, be honest. Yeah. Well who? Yeah. Who does? I mean, it's funny about LeBow Kaz leabeau's an old guy, and the fact that the coach had have been younger than dick lebeau because dick was old. So you like the old school guy knew it was times, you know, in the locker rooms where you know, reporters would come in. And they'd be asking a guy question. And I'll give you example. I'd say so I cater. Yeah. Yeah. So they're asking a question, and they're basically trying to talk bad about dick lebeau in his defense. Like, so we literally like have to stop bike from being ready to put hands on this guy because we like do is has nothing. To do with dick lebeau. We messed up that defense. We messed up to play this game. Whatever it is his defense works. We just have to execute it. Right. And that's really how we felt about him is still do to this day in that. Amazing. Yeah. You know, what if a coach? So you said you can win with a coach you don't love you love, dick lebeau. I've had different guys. Tell me this some coaches have huge egos. Yes, it's true. They do did. Bella check having go. I didn't. I didn't think he had ego. You know, he's not the guy. That's all seen on TV that he's so far from that. He he's actually funny got like a dry sense of humor. You know? He's very relatable. You can talk to him is. Did you? Dreams like he treated everybody else. Like, I said he was it was fine. I had no issues with none defensive guy. Yeah. I had no issues. Like, I say if you go there, and you're a person that don't like organization you don't like discipline. Then you're not gonna you're not gonna ban. You know, you're not going to like it there. If you're a guy that say. Doesn't really want it like they're going to test to see if you really wanted just through the regimen of what they do. And if you're like, you know, you come you got guys that come near in there for a few weeks? And they're like, you know, what I'm retired. Yeah. That's happened a few times. Yes. So if you if you're not really there, and you don't really want it. I mean, you may end up doing it. Yeah. I by the way, you and Tomlin may not have ended great. He's seen as a players coach. Is that a fair label of him? Pro player talks to players like a play like he's a player. Not not not. Well. Yeah. I guess you could say that. Yes. You could say more. I couldn't say more good as you know. There's no need to. Yeah. I it was funny last night. There were a couple of moments when he was on the sideline and a player talked to him during the game. And his facial expression. I was noticing this. It changes like, Mike. It's almost like he wishes he was a player. Sometimes a weird the way as you gotta realize when he first got, you know, his his head coaching job. He was actually the age of some of the players that you know, he was coaching. If not a few years, you know, far removed not far removed from so, you know, I think it is a little bit of you know, you relate to them like just through living situations. Yeah. What you drive the music. You listen to what you eat. What you do? Right. Yeah. Where you go out which hang up. You know, what would you listen to in college high school, you know, things like that? Are you a Baker Mayfield guy? I am not a Baker Mayfield guide. Just yet. Let me see what he does over. The course that in next, you know, three or four weeks or so after you know, he has to actually sit down, and he knows that he's going to be the starter. He has to sit down and studied the defenses and see what's going on. And when it gets out there is not too much information for him because he just went in. What was it the second? Yeah. Mostly the second half. And now, he's you know, he's basically just going off road town. You know, he wasn't going into that game expecting to to start or play have you ever played a rookie quarterback or he's come into a game. And you just didn't know what to expect. Because obviously the jets hadn't, you know. They had tyrod Taylor film. They didn't have a ton of Baker. He never played the NFL. Have you ever been caught off surprised by a young quarterback? You don't have Tapan. I won't say. Caught off surprise. I would say that you know, we've had times where we wanna go to the guy that we didn't have a lot of information. We're right. But our whole thing was we're going to do what we do best Ryan. And and make him try and beat that. And you know, just just run from here. But quarterbacks do have what they call and poker tells quarterbacks do have haven't like there's guys. Okay. This guy doesn't oh. Well to the left, right. Everybody's got like if I said, if I say Philip rivers to you, what comes to your mind as far as Philip rivers having faced in what he do a lot. Or if I say flacco to you. What comes to your mind in terms of a habit flacco, we'll see I don't to be honest. I don't look at quarterbacks happens as far as like where they're throwing because most of the time, I'm rushing, right? So I'm just hoping that you know with flacco he's going to hold onto the ball a little longer with with Philip hoping he goes in pats, and I can slap the arm down when he goes to take off to to throw it..

You're so we need. We're going to get you the scholarship, everything paid for you're in college now and he get into the pros and now he's about to be cut. This is the first time he'd untold. He's not good enough anything, and he has to take that on the chin, what a camera in his face. And his real reaction is probably not the one you're going to see right there like he wants to call, he wants to call and be like, what do I do? He is devastated and I don't feel like that should be shown on TV. It's almost cruel your cut by the ravens got by everybody. Now cut by Pittsburgh by four, five times I'll cut by the ravens. I was cut by Cincinnati. On New England. To Europe. Did your update NFL Europe, Duesseldorf Germany with the Ryan fire. I did all that God, you really had a rough road, didn't you? Listen? I was a, I was a week short. From two thousand. The two thousand four through the five season. I did the NFL Europe and played in regular NFL. I was a week short of a year football, thirty eight games straight non stop thirty eight games, good Lord. And that's back when it was to it as to it and thank God you. But that's why you're a legendary grinder thirty eight games. So when you hear Jerry Jones say we should have eighteen games. You're like, I played double that. I don't care so is aren't Bill..

"I do some don't. I've never been a huge fan of hard knocks. I don't like to league because I think it's disruptive every time. You see a reality show, whether it's football or not. The couple gets divorced like a year later, I don't like the league telling teams, here's a camera crew. I got Baker Mayfield jerus- is rose. You can. You can get out of having to do that. All you gotta do is win well to make the play. You win. Okay. So Cleveland, now's got Baker and all this stuff that got tyrod Taylor, a new quarterback. They got Hugh Jackson's under the gun a little bit. So I think it disrupts a locker room. If you talked to guys who have been on the hard knocks, I've been a hard knocks, widow, Cincinnati. Oh, so how go go, give you? I don't know those guys personality before I got there, but I believe that at some point in time, a cameras going to be in a guy's going to not act the way he would normally act in this situation to get some camera time. You know, basically to see what he what he looked like on TV and the first thing that's going to do when it's time for that to run is make sure he gets to the camera and see what what the situation look like. Another thing had issue is I didn't feel like they deserve to be there. They didn't put any time any blood sweat and tears into that locker room. They didn't do anything to earn a place in that locker room. And now, I mean you're going to show that to the whole whole world. And I Don. I feel like they did anything to be in there and you got guys that are, you know, twenty one twenty two years old and they've played football their whole life. Okay. From high school from pee wee's to high school to college, and they've been told, you know what? You're great man. You're good. Let's go. Let's do this high school thing. You're good man. You're so Bill we need us. We're going to get you the scholarship, everything paid for you're in college now and he get into the pros and now he's about to be cut. This is the first time he'd untold. He's not good enough anything, and he has to take that on Chan what a camera in his face. And his real reaction is probably not the wonder going to see right dear. Like he wants to call, he wants to call a dad and be like, what do I do? He is devastated and I don't feel like that should be shown on TV. It's almost cruel yet your cut by the ravens got by everybody. Now cut by Pittsburgh by four, five times I'll cut by the ravens house cut by Cincinnati. On New England. Did Europe, the NFL Europe, Duesseldorf Germany with Ryan fire. I did all that God, you really had a rough road, didn't you do this? And I was a, I was a week short. From two thousand. The two thousand four through the five season. I did the NFL Europe and played in regular NFL. I was a week short of a year football, thirty eight games straight non stop thirty eight games. Good Lord Naas back when it was two days to it, and thank. Thank God you, but that's why you're a legendary grinder. Yeah, thirty eight games. So when you hear Jerry Jones say we should have eighteen games. You're like, I played double that. I don't care so is aren't Bill your Bill men..

"That would have been the last piece from you played you played college has, and then you got undrafted with the Rams and you almost made it and the whole thing. What was your game? Like what running back remote I was trying to be, you know, I didn't. I couldn't break away, but I can. I can get three hours and clouded does. I could make a make a defendant amiss in the hole. So I was shifty. I kind of like the love, the love Bill used to love. Very Sanders. Growing up. Ricky Watters was was a loved him to his running style too. But also guys, like Bam Morris? Yeah. When they try means used to love guys catch the ball, and I was able to do that. I didn't do it a lot in college though, but I developed it like just practice every week, like being able to spread out there, go out there and and play a little slot as well. I wish how to develop those skills a little like a little sooner they'll before hit the NFL. I mean, I didn't even know how to really watch film yapper until I got to the league because Morehouse college and you gotta bring referees, you gotta bring you on tape glove, go post. So you had to like be resourceful. To me. But like NFL like our remember Steven Jackson was like, I wanted to get some more gloves. I was like, hey, but I got one. I got one glove all season in practice and games the same gloves. Like just get you knew paramount. Really. I can do that. You know, because I'm coming from two black college was that we don't have the resources. So you know that meaning that I just I came into a whole other world in and grew as a artists as an athlete, a little too late. I think I'm surprised bowel. Check that in. Bring you in. I wanna minute. He loves those smart, five, nine, nine back. Thank you. Kevin. Shame. To he was deep three, Danny Woodhead. Yeah, I was. I was big fan of his. He. He always has he tape all. Yes. We just took Sony Michelle from Georgia in the first round, like top of the second last year who's also that one is just can do it all? Yeah, he likes to you kept the gym for like four years. I did my best. I played in Germany, Germany, Duesseldorf, Ryan fire and play for delayed great. Dinnie green, you're, you're not a football league, which was amazing experience. He treated us like man. In fact, my first start in that league, I got player of the week was a buck twenty-five and a touchdown. My first start, so showed me and showed others that with the right opportunity. I, I was good enough and that that's all I need is like my Rudy moment if you will, because that was the only time I started, and and that was the most significant amount of planes. And we won the game two and I can just stand on that. I did that with Dennis Green has the coast. Yeah, forever had any trust me after that too. He talked to me more stuff like that. You know what was the blackout football scene like? So I never seen it's ever really been captured in like a documentary or that let me captured. I would love to. I would love to explore that documentary about the black college football experience, but the best way to describe it for the general mass population out there is everybody who witnessed the beyond say concert at Coachella. Yeah, that's the experience like exactly what is like the halftime show. People come for the halftime show. Not necessarily the game. So like coming for the ban which is fine. It's very live and interactive sort of environment. People are dancing and but the not really paying attention to the game the chain. If the other team scores, they chain of we score. But it's okay because we're all together. We didn't really win a lot of games either. So who's your aval Clark university? Right across the street? Yeah. Yeah. So we could beat them who is the best one who's the best at a they usually, they usually have pipeline of of NFL athletes, Albany state, whatever. They get all these d- transfers just go go for semester..
