"Of people who have worked really hard to make this work. It kind of all filters through Roman ranges feel. And there are several people that come to me to present things to Roman. And then Roman and I will talk about it and come back with either something that fits into their narrative or we would hope we can perhaps enhance it or put it in our own words or come back with now that that doesn't work for us, but what about this and then start a different process in that we're bouncing ideas off of them. When I say them, you know, the thing with Sami started when Vince was still running creative. So it started under Vince McMahon's creative regime. It was a seamless transition to Paul levesque. There were times where we're sitting in a room and it's Roman and it's me and it's The Usos and one of The Usos will just say, you know what would be really good with Sammy and it's oh my God. Why aren't we doing that already? You will find things that come from The Usos that would shock you just how great they are. There's Michael Hayes and Michael Hayes has an understanding about telling a story within the body of a match that very few in history could ever claim to be on par with. The SmackDown writing team, which is led by Ryan Callahan, who is an unsung hero in what we've put together. Ryan Callahan and his team, which there's Michael kirshenbaum, who you never hear about. You know, kirsch as we call him. Who on a week to week basis along with a gentleman named Chad barbash. And another name Zach Hyatt. And these are all people that will come and sit in a room with us or sit in a locker room with us or on Roman's bus or in a conference call. And we'll throw around ideas and what resonates with you. You have teenage kids. Well, this is a story of acceptance and what tales are they telling from the cafeteria at lunchtime in high school. You know, it's just, it's really a team and a lot of unsung heroes. A lot of people that you don't read about online because they very intentionally keep their names out of the headlines. Who have worked their asses off to put this all together. You said people will go to you with ideas you filter it out and then go to Roman.

"A contentious meeting, the loudoun county school board voted not to release an internal report into the school system's handling of two students sexual assaults. Parents have been calling on the board to release that report for months, but the board voted to keep it under wraps, citing attorney client privilege and student privacy calls to release the report came after a separate grand jury report found school leaders were generally incompetent in responding to the assaults. Former loudon schools superintendent Scott ziegler and schools spokesman wade bayard were indicted by that special grand jury, now one of the defendants is worried he won't get a fair trial. It's a story you're hearing first on WTO. Governor Glenn youngkin and attorney general Jason Millar's have tainted the entire jury pool, according to wade bayard's lawyer, attorney Jennifer loeffler writes that the governor and AG have often referred to loudon residents as being victims of a cover up and that their children were in danger. Since bayard is the school spokesman, that suggests he personally failed to inform parents of the alleged assaults. She says Virginia law insists that jurors not have a stake in the case they're hearing, she's filed a change of venue motion asking bayard's case be tried in fairfax county. "Spent this entire time hyping up Connor McDavid and it might surprise some of the listeners to find out that he doesn't lead the league in points or goals. His teammate Leon durai Simon does. He's scoring at an outrageous piece. And Edmonton is regained the lead three to two. That's drive titles 200 National Hockey League goal. And boujee, this to me seems like the best offensive tandem we've seen in the league since Yara Mira and Mariel lemieux with the penguins in the 1990s. I want to know first if you agree with that assessment and also, if you think it's possible that at the end of this season, McDavid and dry side could both finish as MVP finalists like yoga and limb you did as teammates back in the day. Yeah, I really do think they can finish top three because they are different dry saddle is probably a better pure goal score. McDavid is shooting more this year than he ever has, which I like to see is close to four shots a game. His shots are going up. So I think they're going to I can't see any chance outside of injury that they don't finish one too. McDavid's on pace for 58 goals. He's never gotten 50 in a season 41 twice. He should get 58 this year. That's about his space. Maybe this pays will slow down. He'll get maybe 52. But I think he'll want to get it. He should get a 150 points this year. But when you watch their games, I mean, he drives them in every way. I can't imagine someone voting dry site ahead of him for MVP. It's him, man. And he's the one. He's the fuel injector. All right, it feels like Edmonton in the hockey world have been waiting for McDavid and the oilers to have this kind of season for a while now. Why is it taken so long and why is it happening now? Yeah, just roster construction is difficult. You can draft guys, you can bring them in. Some of it's obviously smart and wisdom and knowing how to build a team and understanding the balance of building a team and what you need and how you allocate money. It's hard at a hard cap era. You can't make mistakes. You know, they gave Darnell nurse a lot of money after, really, what will be probably his career year last year offensively, but they had to keep them. He's such a great athlete and he moves so well back there. So but that could make it tough. McDavid makes a lot dry settle makes a lot. Nurse makes a lot and there's only so much you can do. And then it's hard to get free agents obviously to come to Edmonton and then to keep young guys there. You got to overpay. So that's going to be a drag. And that's going to be a problem for these non destination cities. It'll be tough. You've got to kind of time it out right. Otherwise your windows are a lot smaller than a Boston and other places where players want to go to want to live and want to play. So it's going to be tougher for them. That's what I'm saying. I think the window is now, and they should probably empty the bucket to go for it this year and give McDavid all he can now because this is the time. This might be the time, but when we're looking long term, the oilers have McDavid locked up until 2026. He signed an 8 year $100 million contract in 2017. And I mean this with zero disrespect to the people of Edmonton, who were so kind when I was there during the bubble, very nice people. But I have to ask, is it good for the league to have their best player in a smaller market way up north in mountain time zone? No, it's just not. You know, it would be better if he was in New York or Chicago or Philadelphia. It just would be, you know? That's just the way the world works. Same with Matthews. You know, I wish Matthews was in LA and I wish McDavid was in New York and that's just the way it is. It's definitely better because it's face at ESPN when we show Canadian based teams. They don't rate as well. Although I got to tell you, that Edmonton buffalo game that I called in Buffalo, that was on ESPN+. Me and Ryan Callahan, AJ, alesco. That got a huge number of streams that night. So maybe it's time to rethink that that maybe we got to give those games a shot on American television, ESPN, TNT and see how it goes. As we talk about big market small market stars stuck in some of those markets, it's impossible not to mention that Wayne Gretzky, the oilers other singular star eventually left Edmonton for Los Angeles. I'm disappointed about having to leave Edmonton. I truly admire all the fans and respect. Everyone over the years. Do you foresee a scenario down the line where McDavid leaves for a big city? I do. You know, it's the careers are long. Some guys hang around, obviously and play everywhere. Ryan gifts laugh is going to do it nanhe. But of course, he's in Southern California, the ascent of the leave, the greatest weather on North America, the climate is where he is. So he's not going to be a lot of incentive to leave. But yeah, look at the impact Wayne Gretzky had on hockey in North America when he went to LA and how that just the domino effect for kids playing. You see now on a back of hockey cards born, Los Angeles, California. That didn't happen when I was a kid. And so that's the impact maybe, especially Matthews, I think, as an American kid and with his diverse background, could really have in the states. And but McDavid weather, especially if it was for a Florida, even again, you don't need more fans in New York and Boston and Philly and Chicago. But especially if he went somewhere in America that you in Seattle. He would Seattle will have a little bit of a hockey boom as it is, but someone like that would come in, it would have a huge effect. All right, again, McDavid and Gretzky, you can't help but compare the two. How would you say that McDavid has filled Gretzky skates in Edmonton? I think again, with his shy, quiet demeanor, which obviously, Canadians love and hockey people tend to tend to love to in value. It's a value to show humility and to be a little quiet and not be above yourself. So that alone is going to is a good place to start. And then just his sheer talent in how he's different than Gretzky, you know he's not the same person while still winning art Ross and MVPs and piling them up in a similar fashion and in a different league now where there's a lot more depth and more teams and the goalies are better and the fitness levels off the charts and the league is very young. So yeah, I think it's pretty cool that he is able to kind of carve out his own thing. I don't see him as in the shadow of grass. I don't see him as that being a pressure on him anymore because he's a man who is almost a made man at 24 career wise, and now he's just trying to get to his own next level for his own personal satisfaction. It's just about self satisfaction to him. I think more than proving himself to others, I sense that's the case. I don't sense a burden on him. You say that hockey values humility, but the other thing people in hockey value more than perhaps anything else is the Stanley Cup, which is the ultimate currency for a team championship. Our own John tortorella, the longtime NHL coach had some comments about McDavid on the point, which is ESPN to talk to studio show where she hosts Thursday's three p.m. ESPN2. And basically he said he thought McDavid need to alter his game to win in the playoffs. And towards also called him out for some of his complaints with officiating. Yeah, and he complained about it a little bit. He wasn't getting the calls. Quite honestly, and I hope I just shut up. Don't talk about it. Now, I think it's worth noting that McDavid has not drawn a penalty in the playoffs the last two years. But you're usually a host, but I know you've got opinions too. What did you think of tortorella's comments and most importantly, explain to.

I think people think that these hockey players. That's all i do's hockey and they don't have a life outside of hockey but in the nhl when you plant a warmer city is it generally accepted on your off days or maybe after a practice. You don't have a game the next day to go peg it up after route. Yeah it's it is. I mean it's just a you get away from it all to write. You're thinking in playing hockey twenty. Four seven you're gonna get burned out worn out so you have the luxury of living in a warm city where you know you can play golf in december and get away from the game a little bit and you know just outside and clear your head. It's definitely welcomed and it's not frowned upon it. All by you know coaches or the organization. It's me it's no everybody's everybody's doing that. So i mean there's a there's a run there with talking about you. Know j. t. miller me j. t. miller had men and coast. We were when we fly into a city towards the end of the year. United have had you've formed foundation with your wife the ryan callahan foundation. So do you want to kind of fill listeners. in a little bit about your foundation. What it's doing and how we can help. Yeah absolutely so yes. I got to tampa i six year. Deal there We knew we're going to be in tampa for a while. And my wife. And i wanted to give back and do something for the for the community there and you know my my wife lost a family member early pediatric cancer. And i just do doing work in new york with with with kids with cancer. It's something that both how near and dear to us to our hearts and so just started pretty simple and we're having Pediatric cancer families. Come to the game sitting the street. bias read. We bring a bunch of families then and then after the game they'd come down i'd sign some autographs. Take some pictures and through meeting. These families were like we. We gotta be more. These kids are amazing families. Need more you know. Money wise support So through that we. After that first year we started the ryan callahan out asia. Got you guys. Got our five at once. He three and and we expanded what we were doing and we started what we call it. The two four klopp where it's almost like a make a wish style type of thing where we were picking a family each month and sending them on vacation so place where they wanted to go for for the weekend and in our foundation kind of geared toward family unity and spending time together away from the treatment center to make me make memories. That you know are are gonna last forever that you know not necessarily..

"Time right now. I think it's a shame. I'll be honest with you. Do not send your child players there. you know. Obviously didn't they were gonna last olympics and it's just it's such a. It's such an honor to be able to represent your country needs more than hockey Me more than a sport You know and you want the best players in the world over there and you know to take extremely lucknow. Obviously playing to think about the young guys coming in now that would have a chance to grow and having that maybe taking away taking away from them. And i think it's a shame i mean i understand the business side of it with the money and insurance and everything else but i i just think shame because it's quite a feeling to be able to put on that. Usa sweater and it represents something way bigger than yourself or either way sport hockey. Well in like you said to growing up as a hockey player. There's things that you strive to get is stanley cup and a gold medal in taken that away that second part away from from any of the gel players which like you said. There's nothing like those games. You got the best talent in the world on the same ice. I mean the fourth lines are first lines on most nhl. Exactly does that cry crosby. Did he score the game winner. And that game. Yeah he did he did. Yeah i still have nightmares him coming out of the corner shooting and putting it in the net. Yeah so he did he He toured the weather. There you've been in the league for a long time in your minds in a time that you played who had the best work. The hardest worker most talent. Would you say. I mean. I guess that's two different questions you talked about the most talented player and i probably would say crosby is probably the most talented all around player in mcdavid. I think is maybe challenge that but you know. I don't think he's there yet. But i would definitely put crosby as the back player that i played against just in terms of everything he can do and he was very good defensively. Good on faceoffs. You'd set his talking made linemates way better than sometimes they should have been. You know tour goal just unbelievable leader as well. so he's probably the best player returns a work ethic. There's there's a lot of guys are probably stick out to me. I think one of them is is one hundred one quest and the way he worked you know way he mastered his craft. He was a guy that was on the ice early and late and always trying to get better work with the goalie coach there in new york. You know he was. He's a hard working guy but we at that level. There's a lot of guys that put the hard work into get there right so hard to point out one or two but he pops in my head for probably got it that that worked really hard as craft and it showed on the ice for sure..

"I feel in love with that city organization right away and that's summer ended up resigning For six years with Tampa yeah they're organization over the last twelve. Years has really been impressive. The watch. I mean talent after talent. You got stamkos headman. There's so much talent on a team right now and did you play with stamkos. Was he there when yup yup yup. I play with her the whole time i was there. Yeah obviously unbelievable guy. Could captain him became very close. Good friends good friends now. So i was extremely excited last year when i got to see the same finally went after all the injuries. And everything he's got to finally let you know that was That's pretty special. So did you play in tampa with our good friend. Jt miller de did yeah. He was part of the wave of new york players that they came over. It seemed like new york and tampa opened up the floodgates trade wise we had boiler strongmen mcdonagh me And then obviously You build. He came over as well. i played with him in new york. And then i i also played with. Yeah he had mentioned that He drinks more guinness than you sat right. Couple on the road. Dory we We put the a couple of times. But he's a great guy. We we have some The memorable nights in some good days together he had mentioned I think one memorable have been a couple of memorable nights. After you guys got swept in tampa. He said that you guys had a good good few nights there with with the guinness. Oh yeah we did Probably one too many but sometimes apart. Tenderer researchers yeah. I'm sure that as well right up. Its argument on them so exactly. What was your Nude or expectation like or thought process when you found out in two thousand and ten that you were named to team usa for the winter olympics in vancouver..

"Bright lights you are under the microscope. It's almost a little bit of. You're not in canada. Obviously but it's y- they knew everything about you. Yeah it was definitely different. I think i. I was lucky enough as that's where i started. So that's all. I knew if that if that makes sense you know so Going into the league and obviously eventually becoming captain they're like i mean people ask me like what about the media attention like i didn't i didn't know anything different so i just kind of how it was and then you know so i was okay with it i. It's kinda how i grew up. You know realizing that you know everything you do and every move you make. Someone shouldn't be watching or you're gonna have media attention around you. And then i got traded to tampa remember my first game and tap on the locker room after the game and you know new york. Usually the media comes comes flying in you. Know there's fifteen twenty people cameras everything and so sitting down. There's like maybe two or three reporters no cameras. I'm like i said the is our filth below sitting next to me. I said you know big guy stuck in the elevator. Like where's the rest of the these is. This is my colleague cows. You're right. I really like the difference real quick. You know what's what's i got tampa and i think it'd be tougher to go from a team like that. You know to new york. Where when you're used to that but kinda of how i i grew up in what i do so it didn't make a difference to me well and that's the crazy thing right now with you. Look at the nhl very young league right now in these nineteen year old kids twenty year. Old kids coming into the league and they handle the media gracefully way. I mean it's it's really cool to watch How mature these kids are. And i feel like a lot of that tuesday social media aspect of. You didn't really have to worry about that when you were in new york. That's.

"A man to the right here has a little bit more to say about them. Yeah holding some porn has the tailored but not tight approach. The golf shirts fit great small medium little more tailored than as you get in the large large. It's a little bigger. But it's a polish look across all sizes that they have we love the internal colorstay that are sewn into the ryan is favourite. Pieces are the maxwell shirt in the ward sweater. check them out in h. B. golf's dot com. Hey welcome back is another episode of chason birdies and Man our guest today not only can chase birdies but boy has he chased a lot of pucks in his career. Captain olympian. I mean he's done at all. There's a lot there And anyone with the name. Ryan is a good man by me so Ryan callahan joins us today. A former ranger ryan. How're you doing. Shut up now. We appreciate your time. We know it's valuable. So thanks for joining us. Yes you got drafted one hundred twenty seventh overall in two thousand four by the rangers which that has to be. I mean i. I assume that you arrange your san growing up being from rochester. new york. yeah it was Actually being from rochester is a big sabers fan. Growing up again Just down. I ninety not far for me so two games a year my dad and brother and stuff but i think being drafted by the rangers probably second best to that just being an original sixteen as you start to think anybody who lives in new york. State is roots for the rangers as well i. I always cheered for them as well. sort of be able to pick up by them. I think i was kind of a Dream come true just it. So it's such a historic organization. I think is the biggest thing at all. I couldn't have been more excited. The first year i was eligible for the draft. I've passed up. Nobody selected me. So i was just happy to go the second year and it was the ranger so jerry is up. So is that a little bit of a chip on your shoulder for the second year. You that little gap. There work a little bit harder. Proven wrong type thing. Yeah absolutely you know that that first euros up playing junior hockey in canada and my first draft eligible year. I didn't have that great of years. My first year there canada kind of getting used to the league wasn't you know wasn't a star player and then that following year i was more comfortable..

They smashed each other girl cheese. Your italian hoagie. I don't know about you guys out there. But like a good italian hoagie. You cannot beat a good italian hoagie and that place at killer. Tainos so we're back in the saddle today. Another episode of chasing birdies. Thanks for listening. And here we are. And i don't know what we want to talk about right now. The panther session was okay. I think that we could let go a little bit more. But you know what it's tough because you can't our platform right now so big Why don't you tell everybody where we are on the podcast. Right now boys. Hey guys i mean first off. We started this march fourth and this is kind of like a fun. Yeah we've moved up. Sixteen spots to number forty in golf listened podcasts. that's awesome that's that's all across the apple spotify platforms. That's everything so not bad. No our our goals top fifteen. Come jan one twenty twenty two. Well tell you we keep doing what we're doing and you guys out there we get. We get messages. we get thumbs up. I mean we rarely get a thumbs down every now and then we like a thumbs down because we can't get complacent here But to be inside or at top forty of all all-time gulf podcast and trending upwards. We jumped sixteen spots. I mean give me some of that but that's not bad that means we were fifty sixth. But if there's ever a podcast award ceremony and we get nominated boys and we have to go. I'm wearing cowboy boots cowboy hat up but guaranteed.

"They're bringing on to cover hockey. But it's pretty unbelievable. Here's here's some of the names. Instigators. Our number two Darren Dreger at 11 30, Ray Ferrero, Brian Boucher, Ryan Callahan, Kasey Campbell, Pasco Wreck DPH Trow. A gym A Jamelle, Esko Kevin weeks. Those are hockey analysts, Um they'll also Barry Melrose, Mark Messier. Um It isn't Wayne Gretzky going to Chelios, Chris Chelios. I know. Um, hold on. I'm just trying to find the list here. It's just It's unbelievable how many people they hired Chelios, Um, Hilary Knight. Mm uh, Leah Hextall shot. I mean, John Buccigross, Sean McDonough like they have Blake bold and they have so many, uh There's so many people being hired elite like very elite. It's almost like overwhelming how many people you're going to know how many options there are to see games in different different analysts and stuff like that. But Yeah. Good, good, good list of people there. I'm looking forward to seeing Messier. I mean, I think yeah, he could be. He could be fantastic. I don't I don't know. Like One of those things, right? Um It's gonna be hard. I guess I don't know what's messy going to say. Seeing her rip guys. Could you imagine Rive? Like, Like, what if you were playing and and then all of a sudden you made a mistake in a big game And you've got all of a sudden you got the moose Mark Messier sitting there shredding you on national television. Or Wayne Gretzky. Think I would be okay with that. Better than than someone else. Yeah, Absolutely. Yeah. Fair least They're talking my name, right? Yeah, that's that's one way to get. How do you think? How do you think they're going to do like you think that that, uh You think that's going to work out? Um, I I I think that ESPN will always make it work out. I mean, it's It's Yeah, it's it's going to work their listen. Listen, listen, there are always you know, you see names and things like that. You're like, Okay? Yeah, bringing that person and then some of you like, why and but Yes, I think I think it will always work out. Um, they're huge, and I think it's huge for hockey that they're taking hockey back, You know, like all the revenues and everything. That's one thing. But ESPN is the face of sports in the United States. It always has been. Since I moved here. Um ESPN has always been the face of sports much like T s San and Toronto And you have your your sports nets, right? Like They're your faces of sports, you know, in your countries. So, um, other big hockey news? Uh, we'll start with this one. First Lightning forward Alex Killorn will miss Game two of the Stanley Cup. You had a you had a great point. It's obviously when he went down to block that shot. Took it off the foot. And you said something that is About as honest and true as you can talk about when you're talking Stanley Cup finals. You remember what you said? Yes, I do. Um, you know Alex Killorn in the last game ended up blocking a shot. Shea Weber shot And for him not to play in the Stanley Cup finals. This has to be a significant Injury. This has to be a broken foot. Where there's just no way he can get his skate on. His foot. There's just no way because the way I see things There's no clear evidence where it gets them. But it's it's ankle could be ankle. It could be. Yeah, it could be. There's a gap. Ladies and gentlemen, if you're not familiar where, you know, he turned his foot toe down to the ice. So his blades are facing the ice are facing the boards. His toes are down to the ice and the outside of his body is facing the shot, so he takes the shot on the outside of his left left leg. Yeah. And There's a space there where your shin pads come down and where your tongue goes up, and then the back of this where you have no padding. There's like a little space there where there's no padding. Yes. And sometimes it's it. I mean, this was a rocket of a shot. This was an ad. He winds up a tree. Uh, he's got a bomb. It looks like it hits them in the high ankle. Or in the ankle, and that's usually where there's no padding. Um, but I was what I was saying was, you know it has to be significant. In order for him not to play And the reason why I say that is You know, I I hate to say this, but you know, there's there's drugs that can numb the pain of, you know, putting a skate on and making sure that that you're going to play there are needles. And this This has to be significant enough where I mean, he just can't get He has no mobility, probably in the ankle or or whatever. You can't put any weight all the severity of this injury right now, but for him, not the play because he's played exceptionally well, axe corn has played exceptionally well. In these playoffs, Um and he will be missed. There's no question Gretzky, by the way is with TNT. As I was mentioning. I just I couldn't remember which one he was with. I know I didn't say it was with ESPN. But I think it's interesting. Gretzky's with T s TNT, and then they go and ain't they hire messy? Um All right. Jonathan Taves says he had chronic immune response syndrome and his body could couldn't recover properly. He is back in Chicago. And skating and will play this year and we were talking just was it last week or the week before about how rumors of Chicago over coming up and it and all the opportunity for Jack Echo there surrounded or, uh, Whether Jonathan Dave's was going to be able to play or not this year to carry that $10 million salaries, So to me, great news for John to visit he's recovered. Okay. Great news for the Hawks that he's recovered, but, um On ice for the Hawks. They have off ice issues that they're dealing with Yahoo and, uh, not good for trade partner for the Buffalo Sabres, in my opinion. No, no, I think this puts a little wrinkle. And in Chicago, um it would have been a lot different if if 33 year old Jonathan Taves. Medical Issues would have kept him out longer or.

Ryan Callahan Barry Melrose Mark Messier John Buccigross Kasey Campbell Brian Boucher Ray Ferrero Sean McDonough Chris Chelios Jonathan Taves Alex Killorn Hilary Knight Jonathan Chicago United States Buffalo Sabres Leah Hextall $10 million Wayne Gretzky Darren Dreger

How Brad Marchand Transformed Himself After 'The Lick'

"So florida. This was a pretty memorable moment for hockey for those who not remember it. Or don't know about it. Could you just explain the lick ryan callahan. The tampa bay forward at a collision with brad marchand in the playoffs and as layers. Do they come together. And they're talking and discussing fat cat. They're the right of your screen. And then all of a sudden sticks out his tongue and right up under ryan's knows across the lower part of his face are shed up to his usual antics eight of spite boston. This wasn't just like a little tongue. This was a proper lick right up from the gender. The knows there is some slobber there. Yes there is some sign. There's some spit. it was legit legit lick and martin had actually done something very similar to this just a couple weeks before. What was the reaction to these back-to-back incidents in the hockey world just shock. I think our last story. Today we turn to the age old problem of face. Licking gra generations. athletes have been involved in face licking. I don't wanna use that word but anybody who looks. Someone's face and obsessional. Sports league in my opinion is an idiot.

What what did you do to prepare yourself for this. Bigger longer season and bigger players. More speed i can turn working out lifting weights cardio combination the offseason. I work out with a trainer back in rochester and You know there's a couple of pro guys right in rochester. They're going to get a chance to skate with during the summer. So i think that helped me out with the speed Just skating with them. you know. I definitely helped me adjust a bit to you. Hang with on the team. Who do you. who's your roommate on.
