Ryan Braun's Tainted Legacy on the Eve of His Retirement
"Ryan braun told some reporters who cover the brewers that he is almost certainly going to be retired. It's not a surprise. He's thirty seven years old This is someone who at three hundred and fifty two home runs in his career to ninety-six average and mvp award nine thousand nine hundred sixty three hits eleven hundred fifty four rbi. But i don't think. I saw a lot of what really to me is going to be a big part of his legacy. When his baseball you know epitaph is written along with the mvp award. His legacy is going to be about what happened with his positive drug test and his suspension that he had for. Pd's it was one of the worst cases of a professional athlete in the united states. And i know of along with lance armstrong for someone who just flat lied. He one point you remember. You tested positive. He contested it. It went before an arbitrator and he won that a he won that arbitration decision and then he did a victory dance with the press. Conference at the brewers spring training camp. And you remember how during that process. He dumped all over the specimen collector. Who who's calling other players suggesting to them that the specimen collector was anti semitic and then push came to shove in the end. He was determined that yeah. He cheated accepted a suspension I don't know how you get away from that. It was one of the ugliest situations that i've seen in the thirty two years at a covered. Baseball tim must've ask him to be in the first paragraph of his retirement wherever he goes ear. There's no way around. I'll never forget us watching afri- i was in the espn bostering screw training and we were watching in. All of us. Basically said the same thing that was impressed with the way that she presented this. I believe i'm a little naive about some things. But i believe every word he said that day because of the passionate he used and the waiting presented everything then to find out. Later that he was lying was more than letdown. For a lot of people at it's just acknowledged right away. I don't say a may not be in the first paragraph of his retirement story but it will be because of how adamantly was and how through someone under the bus that i didn't do this. This guy did this to me and then to get caught. That really hurts ryan. Bronze legacy mood for
The Cubs Are Sitting Pretty in the NLC
"They can look at the division. Tony you look at all the teams that the cubs have to but up against dan. We haven't seen a whole bunch of the squads in the central be. You know they haven't made a whole bunch of moves during this off season and in the cubs they're in that basket as well so when it comes to being competitive in the division right now. I think jed hoyer and david rawson as well as myself. I think everyone is of the mindset that this cubs team they can go out there and twenty twenty one and compete no matter what a yeah i think so for sure i mean you look at this division in every single team. All five of them has gotten significantly worse on paper going into twenty twenty one compared to twenty twenty you know the the reds are losing. Trevor bauer who. We talked about earlier in the podcast. I think you traded rozelle glossiest the angels. The potential transcending gray like who knows. We'll see some of that archie. Bradley was it was another pitcher. They acquired at the trade deadline atop reliever for them. He's gone cardinals. Have lost a lot of veteran guys as well. The pirates are trading away. Anybody of value right now in the brewers have you know declined to options are not options for guys like ryan braun and and so on so yeah off five teams really right now. Don't look better on paper than they did last year. But that doesn't mean that there's a wide open division for the cubs to go claiming i think right now the cubs have one of the best teams on paper. They have a manager. Year finalist david. Ross they have all those poor guys in the mvp candidates that we talked about before that if there are bounceback season from a couple of all of those guys than this offense is in much better shape than it was last year. So i think the real big question is just pitching for them you know. Where does the pitching come from from the cubs but yeah i think right now they can compete certainly with any team in the division

"From Ryan Braun today. Nine five brewers fall to the cardinals the first loss of the season at the time that tied this thing up, and there's been a lot talked about Ryan Braun and the launch angle and everything and then Craig counsel will run creek counsel's post game press conference coming up in about fifteen twenty minutes. But there's a lot of pressure. When you're in that spot in the order of the way Braun is. Right after Christian yelich because y'all is going to get on base a lot. Whether it's because he's hitting himself on on base. Or because he's being walked either way. Ryan bronze going to have as many RBI opportunities. This year is probably he's almost ever had. And he comes up big with homerun today. What I have to give them, you know, to give him credit on this one. He he knew that he was hitting into way too many outs last year. And it's it's one thing to hit an outs. But it's another thing to know that they shouldn't be out. You're the one that swinging the bat and and to do what he did during the off season in the spring training, whatever adjustments they were and and he does like to get into big detail with it. We know what the end result wants to be for him. And that's what we saw tonight. And and I think we're going to see a little bit more of that as as we go along even even at his age right now, he can still, you know, turn his production around from what it's been over the last few years because there's ways to do it now. And there's better ways to measure it and go about it. And he's trying to get their the news of the day before the game. Even started was the announcement that Corey Canadians going to undergo Tommy John surgery. Now, the the quick story here he had an issue with his UCLA, which is in his elbow. He's had it for four or five years has pitch through it. But it got to a point where he was going to rehab again, the rehab was gonna take months, and then there is no guarantee that after the rehab process was done that he'd be fine. So if he his choice was either gamble, and if the gamble doesn't pay off he misses all of this year and probably all of next year or just go ahead and get the Tommy John surgery now and get back. Probably fourteen or so months from now, you would think that maybe around the all star break next year. We'll probably be talking Corey can maybe a little bit before that. So there's two things here. First off him personally and ham just trying to go through that process. But then how it impacts this team? And how it impacts the bullpen and will focus in on that right now, Jeremy Jefferson's down. He's going to get back at some point. I think before the month of April comes to an end. But this bullpen really has one high leverage guy right now that has a track record that you can really count on. And that's Josh hater and outside of that. You don't completely know what you're going to get from those guys coming out of Penn right now. No, not at all. I mean, there's really no other way of knowing this really in the season unless until they until they go out there and do their thing like tonight, not overly pleased with what we saw. I don't think from from several guys, you know, you gotta throw strikes and by the same token, you still got a figure out a way to get get out and go on. On the attack. And I'm not sure that you know, these coaches are going to be pleased with what they saw from that standpoint here tonight. But you know, it's gonna take a little bit of time. We know what hater can do we saw yesterday and he didn't even throw a breaking ball yesterday. I mean, the one thing that I loved what they did yesterday is they took advantage of the sun shade and said, you know, what here's ninety seven. Here's ninety eight why stop and good luck with this. And and it turned out, you know, with cain's catch to to work out. Well, but it's it's going to be a work in progress. And we can't sit here and say who's going to pitch when where and why I mean, they've they've got you know, a lefty out there. Besides hater Claudio. We know we're going to see him in situations like that. But these guys right now are kinda served to be going through at least three batters right now. I mean, that's kind of what what's left out there. And you know, what is going to be the success that still a question? Mark. And it's a competition right now. Here's somebody on the bullpen. And you wanna be a seventh eighth ninth inning guy. Hey, you got the opportunity. Go pitch well for two weeks, and you're gonna be you're gonna be right there. Because again outside of Josh Hader, who's not going to pitch every day, and we're not going to get back into that again this year. But he's just he's not the it is wide open right now. I think Alex Claudio probably takes a step forward today. He had the best day of anybody in the bullpen. He's the only relief pitcher who did not give up a run either on their own or an inherited runner the way Matt Albers did. But Albers had the second best day. He comes in and kind of a dicey situation gives up one inherited runner. But you just you don't know you just don't know what's going to come out of the bullpen right now. And I think you know, I really think they want to get to a spot where they use hater only in the ninth inning for for as many games. Maybe as they can because he does have the capability of throwing the fewest pitches to get through inning right now. I mean, what did he have eleven in the eighth inning yesterday meeting? We're talking ninth inning. He could pitch again the next day. And I think they're willing to do that right now. I I don't I don't get the firm. No response. So we'll see. Yeah. I I don't know. I might respectfully disagree with you on this one because I feel like with hater just the whole process of him warming up and coming into the game. If there's less taxes able to come back a little bit sooner. Absolutely. You're right on that. But I get the sense that once he's in there not really excited about pitching him in back to back day. So if you're going to use them, you might as well, get two innings out of them. Because in all likelihood, you don't want to pitch them the next day. Anyway. So I take a little bit of a different approach than you on that. Well, let me say this what if it's tied in the eighth inning going into the eighth wall in the eighth inning period. Do you do you put him in a tie situation? Burs get the lead in the bottom of the eighth who's going to close at night. I mean, yeah, I think there's going to be scenarios like that word. They're going to have to test the water last year again when you Jeremy Jefferson, he had Corey can able when you had other guys when a Joakim Soria just other individuals who were pitching at a pretty high level that they don't have at this moment last year. I think one of the things that I lamented at times and one of the few areas that I've I've disagreed with Craig counsel a little bit is last year. He would I wish he would have managed tie games the way he would manage the game where you're up by one because I feel like your one swing of the bat away from taking that lead. I would step back from that a little bit this year, and I probably wouldn't put Josh into a tie game. Because if you don't win that game you've just lost the ability to use hater for a day or two, and you might need them the next day when you are winning so again without and without Jeremy Jeffers for right now. I think you have to be even more choosy on when you take those spots for hinder. I mean, there's no doubt. I mean, there's unfortunately, they're in a situation right now that they didn't expect to be in when spring training began in even midway through spring training. I don't think they saw this coming. So this is going to be a work in progress to from the standpoint, you know, that this bullpen away it sits right now is unlikely to be intact for a long period of time. They're probably going to go and find some outside help if outside help is available. They're probably going to dip into their their farm system as well. I don't think they're going to waste time. Making sure they have the best relief pitchers. Here is often as possible four one four seven nine nine one six twenty. It's the academic mortgage, talk and text line. "Ryan braun. We'll be the battery for Milwaukee. Matsuda what an eating into third with only fourteen pitches in last night's game. Brought his over to the walk through is just three hits today as the first pitched abroad is a three hopper out to the shortstop Machado would odd. And now the dodgers are in out away from going up three games to two in this series. When things really after getting shot out at game three they had so many chances last night could score finally wanted to thirteen thinks look pretty bleak for a while. Now, the tide seems to have I mean, Dan, what do we talk at like less than sixteen hours? Things have really shifted for the doctors they go from being down in the series to up again, we all know better though than to count the brewers out as resilient as they have proven to be this year, and his talented is they are they Suzanne is old for three today. The should pitch a fastball for a strike. We will be back with you Friday night for Miller park, we expect the starting pitchers to be Wade Miley again, but this time for longer for the brewers. And Shannon review for the dodgers. Here's the one all the way to break crowded out. Third it past a diving Turner down the left field line chasing it into the corner. Is Taylor rumbling towards second has Accu lark slides in with a double that was a lot of work for the big guy. Yeah. The jets to statement took a while for.

"Who the brewers brought back. He was part of that two thousand eleven team had so much personality passionate energy that we see in this year with a lot of the players the way, they conduct themselves in the dugout got the crowd going and see if Braun feels like he did then Wadwan breaking down at way ball to we talked about this before we get a chance to walk into a lot of different clubhouses. You don't want to read too much into something or but this is a fun group. They have a really really good time. You could see. Acquisitions to the yellow chick of the off season as the two audits WalMart between thirty field a two out single for Ryan Braun. Piece. They're back to the two quick outs. As we mentioned Ryan Braun. Yeah. He's not playing every day. And as far as when he was younger and going out there and being in one hundred and fifty hundred sixty games, but he's very smart. He knows his body. And he knows how to setup pitchers and get himself in no position is not driving the ball park is much but keep the line moving here and see what can just go down with Travis Shaw Shaw in the cleanup spot a guy with thirty two home runs during the regular season. But did not play did not start. If a tiebreaker day, she'll take up with the way ball one public exit was a let all about job up at Scopus are there, but it's speech to the positional depth that the brewers have. They went out pick up your stock as they pick up small scope, rather. They got a lotta guys they actually have to Betty guys. So at any given day somebody pretty good is sitting on the bench with the Milwaukee Brewers. The set by sets Tele a one zero another change battery doubt it away. And when we were here, I guess a month ago and and talking to Craig counsel. And he said, yeah. Yeah. The situation I know that pretty much every day. I'm going to have a guy that's unhappy because of the surplus of of position players, and you know, it's not gonna be able to be in their exactly everyday. There's certain guys at are. But there's buy in. And I think it just speaks to the culture. The brewers have he'll they're they're focused on the w not the individual stats. Swing of the pop up out of play left side at the buy in not just in terms of getting at bats. But a guy like Shaw who had never played second base before a third base by bike was Dhaka's comes over. He takes over at third. And so when we stock is his third Charles to be in the lineup. He's going to be a second base. He's a big second base. The biggest sector basement in baseball. And these guys are huge. They're like first baseman shift onto the Rockies three of the right side is the two on his fouled back to two on Shaw. We are just outerwear. Bottom of the first dose score ever game. While the Colorado Rockies Abby Bill Joaquin breweries. Brewers took five out of seven from the Rockies the regular season. To to to count on Shaw, the rudder broad being held on it. I by Ian, Desmond. Tellers got his side. He sets the deals that are breaking down or day. They hit the shit guard of the catcher Ryan Etta at about us all the way to the backstop. Rawda races allowed second before putting the brakes sawn because he took. I had a wild of find that. It was a wild pitch that allows broader would advance base at very nearly true. Dan, I think some type of slider cutter that I just didn't get down didn't drop to the ground with the shin guards. And just kind swell off the body to block it and keep her there and good thing for the Rockies that wasn't more yelich because uncertain there on third base in that situation. Even with two outs. It's a risky play with two Brian Braun boost Patty script is used to be. He was thinking about going around. Second Roderick secretary gathered our full count on Sean. Kicks deals that he this is the way ball four. I had second. The two down to the bottom of the first two. Now here comes one of the most popular members of the Milwaukee Brewers guy with lots of personality pay Seuss Aggie law. The first baseman who was it all star this year thirty five home runs at up top five of the National League home runs RBI's slugging percentage. These the guy who started the pink with Milwaukee when he hits a whole body with assaulter data the end of the dugout it almost lead over backwards. So he could show his face to the camera. Four teams picking up all this catastrophic Astros debated at these days with what they're doing. But this is a large man with large amounts of power. Right headed battery takes data. And get away with that. He is out. To score from second on a wild pitch data retrieved the backstop at a bed sends a Tele covering and that will end the inning. Now, the rulers are considering whether they want to ask for a replay kind of the fate. You always do you take your thirty seconds. And it looked like raw drive. You get around the slide around the tag, rather? But I think this wants to get a hold up, and that's a huge mistake. Dan. You got thirty five home runs at the plate in two runners on you can't do that in that situation evening to score. It's a huge risk at the brewers won't ask for a challenge battle the no score at the end of one. You're listening to the National League division series on ESPN radio and the ESPN app presented by auto zone. It sounds like a.

The Milwaukee Brewers over the Saint Louis cardinals twelve to four here at Busch stadium. They've taken the first two games of this three game series crucial games, but walkie creeps closer to the top spot in the National League central behind the cubs. The Colorado Rockies basically leapfrog the Saint Louis cardinals in the wild card race for the number-two spot. Well, first right here tonight. Busch stadium to walkie brewers. They are looking like a division champ. Not just a team that's trying to get into the postseason by way of wildcard. And we saw tonight the offense on full display. The first inning with a solo shot. Ryan Braun who ended up with two tonight. But the National League VP in my opinion, Christian yelich put on a display, and what put the icing on the cake, and lit the candles was the fact that they pitched around the Renzo came intentionally walked in in the ninth inning to pitch to yelich to get the lefty lefty matchup, and what is yelich do. He hits a three run bomb to centerfield. A lot of exciting things going on in Milwaukee. We do know this regardless of any of the standings. And what's going on the brewers are going to be in the postseason? So we're going to see them as early as next Tuesday and possibly next Thursday three run triple for yelich middle of the game when they needed more cushite three run home run as the knockout punch tonight at six RBI night for the potential National League MVP the cardinals. A little bit of trouble right now. Still plenty of games to play. They still got the head to head against the cubs this weekend. But they looked a little weak at times tonight in the things with the cardinals that we do know they're not a good defense. They've got some young pitchers in the starting rotation. Austin.
It's time to talk about Bryce Harper and the Cubs again
"How how do you. Guys think Bryce Harper is going to be received at, Wrigley field demont Open arms yeah right open people? Boom But, like. What are. You About the crowd. Yeah no I don't think is there a lot of booing? That comes from cub fans. I, don't think. To Bryce no it's, not it's, not Ryan Braun Right of course I don't think so I'm not sure but it's a question how much does the. The Wrigley field crowd to her. When you're not there not? There how much I know. If he word was Hayward of last year and Harper walked up to the plate I'd better, get a standing over you know what I mean like they'd be more welcoming I. Haven't actually a post running tomorrow. Morning where like the hype of Harper to the cubs I, feel like it's died down a, little bit the outfield's better than last year Harper's batting average not. So. Good I feel like the circus was, last year more than this. But, if they, sign Bryce Harper you can do a lot of with those outfielders move some guys yeah and that's how you get. A. Pitcher, you'd unclogging a. Little bit well you know my feeling I think they're going? To trade Russell and changed. The, dynamic of. The core that. Way Bodey seems to be for real hard whatever that means for real as a major leaguer, Harper's been a lot better? Since the
Wait ... Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp is a star again?
"He hit and he kept hitting and he's continued to keep hitting where are you with matt kemp and the aforementioned concept time it's it's it's it's been amazing i mean that grand slam on saturday was obviously like any respectable major laker should have hit that specific pitch out but can't just paste it in it really just sort of br crystallized like this is a matt kemp that no one thought that we would see again and you know it's funny kemp's i two significant home runs of this season his homer to dead center in the freeway exhibition series right before opening day dodger stadium against the angels in his first homers in the regular season this year against dodgers et dodger stadium joe davis had the same call and he said matt kemp turning back the clock and that's exactly what feels like i said this weekend after i hit him on hit that moonshot i said i felt like i feel like i'm gonna time machine watching this guy and this is just something that fans always want to see with players like this but seemingly never do kemp as we all know in two thousand eleven should have won the mvp he was second behind ryan braun right ahead of prince fielder good good year for the for the brewers and you know since then it was a very steep descent for camp i think he got injured the very next season and he just never really put it together after that and it was heartbreaking we had this guy who i mean he was just custom made for los angeles he just looks great new dodgers uniform he's comfortable around celebrities he you know he was least like serviceable in the outfield in just like he could hit for average he could hit for power he was great we really thought that with camp in kershaw we really thought we just had sort of like the cornerstones for the next decade and that obviously turned out to be the case with kershaw but way too soon kemp was just all of a sudden off the radar and you know he's he hung around for a few more seasons it was funny the team was really starting to take off but kemp was not and it just i it had one of these uncomfortable things where you see this guy either in the lineup or on the bench and you just kind of think this just doesn't this just doesn't fit the netting nothing about this as right and then when he was exiled to san diego it just got more sad because who wants to plant san diego especially after you've been playing los angeles and you know by the time it got to atlanta you know he just seemed to really be fitting this narrative that you see about extremely talented players who won't point seemed like maybe to be an hall of fame conversation but just because of the vix itunes of injury and time it just wasn't going to work out and then when he came over to begin the year i think people fell a little uncomfortable they felt one like we already tried this this didn't work this is just this is this is just this is a bad idea especially because as you said no one thought that he was going to even make the roster and then when he did i think some fans is kind of thought wait a minute if kemp is making the roster what's wrong with this roster but then right away he started to hit and even when the dodgers were struggling early there is this one thing about the team that was really disorder of keeping everyone's attention and it was it i.

"So we went through a couple of things it should outs me from the ryan braun interview earlier this week and the whole trade thing i've said my piece several times there's no reason to trade him and you don't years another thing ashton pop how upset do you think it makes some brewers fans that ryan braun is going to be the greatest player in franchise history i know exactly what you're getting it they're going to be very upset that's fine but again it it's not just caused necessarily robin ymt is going to be viewed as the greatest player but statistically ryan braun is going to be the greatest player in franchise history if he isn't already i think part of that is like tied into the i'll k you cheated you lied to me and you trump drought in yeah let's get him out of here for whatever reason for the last few years this whole position thing has come up with ryan braun and we saw flip around from third base to the outfield and from right to left and said i didn't like third base i dean it like right field he likes left went from third to left to right to left didn't like third didn't like right particularly liked left feel better but now we hear this conversation of should we move ryan braun first base weirdest first base come from why is first base the position that we flowed out there all the time because the assumption is all you have to do is catch a ball the play first there's more to it than that now not nuances as nuanced his third base or shortstop sure but the general belief that these guys are robots and you can move him here or you can move him there is a video game it doesn't matter we've seen that to not be the case many times who the greatest what's the greatest example of a guy moving from the outfield the first pay stand hughes you're right other than that and drawn a blank on some other ones freddie freeman did the opposite jim told me went from third first did albert belle moved to first base but first speaks always comes up of i just move on there the ryan braun was asked would you be opened the changing positions and specifically asked which you moved first race earth thank you hit something.

"And even on wisconsin sports weekend i'm probably the last ryan braun defender left in this city i don't get the calls for ryan braun to be traded the contract is not that bad on on the surface you think about twenty million dollars for ryan braun if you're looking at last year in terms of games played in the production i can see where you have an issue with the but let's look at some of the other contracts that are being dole vowed he major league baseball now this is a bargain for ryan braun and look the games played were down and he talked about that me interview that we referenced that with a hamstring injury that it was media will more severe than we thought and the fact that ryan braun tried to kind of gut through that that ultimately cost him a month and a half the season so games played were down this year but when you look at the numbers the performance in the production was there the stats don't look pretty because he didn't have is really atbats but if you extrapolate what he did out over one hundred sixty two games rover i think i i think is average games played one hundred thirty five a year if you extrapolate of the numbers over that i believe i did this last week of the season i wanna say it was the twenty four home runs in eighty runs driven in i believe you that's bad what am i missing here we get what happened in two thousand eleven and two thousand twelve subsequently but look everybody gets to make a mistake it's how you recover from it and i think ryan braun has been a shining example that so i am not in favour of trading ryan braun that was asked to him we'll play with you played with you play back to you what he had to say but the other thing that's interesting which i i just can't rat my head around this ashton maybe you can walk me through it position change was brought up to ryan braun so what do i mean by that i'll tell you what i mean after this will play would you there is again we'll play you ryan bronze response to would he change positions and what jumped out to me when you talk about ryan braun moving around the diamond who share that with.
