"Two of the greatest basketball players of all time shared the court last night in Los Angeles as LeBron James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all time leading score. LeBron James has shot in history. LeBron's stands around. The NBA's all time scoring record. Now belongs to LeBron James. Ryan Anderson with the call on TNT and joining us live Washington Post deputy opinion editor and columnist David von Raleigh. David lebrun was only a few years old, of course, when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired from professional basketball back then, you said that his record of 38,387 total points probably would not be broken within your lifetime, taking into account your great respect for Kareem and LeBron, I believe, what are your thoughts now? Well, it's a phenomenal achievement. You have to be both at the, you have to be the dominant player of your time. And your time has to last a very, very long time. LeBron was able to achieve that. And like Kareem, what I said in my column was I always was I thought if Kareem's record was ever broken, I'd be sad because I have such respect for the man on and off the court, but along comes LeBron who has matured before our eyes into a great man in his own right. The leading citizen and patron of his hometown of Akron, Ohio, a statesman of the game, a leader on and off the court. And now the owner of this seemingly unbreakable record. So you kind of opened the door there and actually walked through the door for LeBron James legacy. What more would you say about that given this accomplishment? Well, you know, watching him play last night, the bucket that he sank for the record was a virtually impossible fall away fade away from outside the free throw line and insane shot. Looking at it, I said, this guy might play for another ten years. So we don't know what the record book is going to look like by the time he finishes. But not only is he the all time scoring leader, he's number four on the list for assists in his career so he spread around, almost as many points as he scored. His final legacy is that you're never going to be able to have a conversation about the greatest of all time without talking about LeBron James. I think I share a trait with many of our listeners here on WTO and that, you know, almost sports fan to an extent, but really much more of a news junkie at heart and I love to hear people such as LeBron on matters of social justice or politics or whatever, not everybody shares that opinion. How about you, it seems you most admire his heart on the court, but then there's so much other work. Absolutely. No, I think if you want to look at how a figure can use his or her great fame for athletic achievement in a positive way off the court in society, LeBron James is a great man to study. He thinks before he speaks, he's very reflective and in this way he's very much like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. These are thoughtful individuals deep people constantly educating themselves, learning more about issues. And so when they do have something to say, it's worth listening to. Thank you very much for your time tonight. It was great to hear from you. Thank you very much. David von Raleigh there. He's Washington Post deputy opinion editor and columnist, of course we are talking about the passing of the torch from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to LeBron James in terms of total points in the NBA and LeBron showing no signs of stopping. We're going to continue the sports conversation. College basketball tonight

Eric Shares His Thoughts on Banned Books

"Are your thoughts on banned books? Do you think books on gender should be banned but not books that have racism or any or are deeply disturbing? Isn't it the same vein? Isn't it in the same way? Let me help you. Thank you. Who should be able to choose, well, man, this gets to the question of what it is to live in a democracy, right? I mean, the idea of banned books, we know that you don't want pornography on library shelves, certainly not in a school. We have to use wisdom on these kinds of things. But in terms of what we allow in public life, the idea that books considered classics would be banned is preposterous. And I think that I'm much more worried about books that are not banned. Books that have that are really that have views. And again, when we talk about things like censorship or banning books, you have to talk about the context. Are we talking about a public library? Are we talking about banned from being sold on Amazon? I mean, you can buy mein kampf on Amazon. You can buy every foul thing on Amazon, but they have banned books like my friend Ryan Anderson wrote a book talking about the transgender madness. When Harry became Sally, they banned that book, Abigail schreier, wrote a book. They banned that book from so really depends on the context, but generally speaking, going back to John Milton in the mid 17th century, he wrote a famous essay called areopagitica where he talks about this issue. You want to err on the side of more information, not

"Than the capable hands of American corn farmers. Do you have a favorite NBA current play by play guy? It's pretty deep. I was thinking about this the other day. I tweeted, I tweeted that I tweeted last week or two weeks ago. ESPN with bring Dave pass who I think is so underrated. Mark Jones, tiny eagle. I am TNT with and they've got Harlan and Ryan Anderson. They brought Gus back. I'm leaving someone out though for ESPN. Oh, Ryan ruco, who I think is great. Yeah. Yeah. The nets are exploded. Yeah, Richard, Jefferson. The broadcast team is deeper than the basketball team. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Both networks. Did you say Brian Anderson? I said Brian answered. Yeah. They're both staff. They're really, really stacked with great play by play folks. It's really deep. And it's kind of one of those things where you want to talk negative versus positive. It rare, you're like, man, this is amazing. How many great announcers we have. It's just immediately, like I can't believe. How bad this guy is, or what this guy doesn't watch any of the games and all this different stuff. But yeah, there's some of the local guys that I really like Adam and me with Chicago Bulls. I've always thought Sean grandey on radio with Celtics is terrific. His call of game one at the end when Kyrie was having this incredible game, but it was clear that Kyrie wanted to shut that crowd up so bad on that last possession that he was going to just go ISO and he kind of screwed it up and grandy's able to give you these in the moment super dramatic moment while also observing a real basketball thing as it's happening that he's like he wants this one and you're like that's the stuff where you're like this guy is special. I'm not going to get on here and be like, all right, I'm going to go do the 5 guys I think that suck. No, it's a really, really deep. I mean, obviously I watch all these games and I'm consistently impressed with how deep it is on both sides with this, but if you were going to see color analyst Jeff van Gundy still in my favorite. Oh yeah, Jeff is yeah, I'm with you on that one. You know, trying to think about bringing in watching one of the games that breen was doing with van Gundy and Jackson. I'm thinking to myself. Mike breen is called like the last, it's like 14, 15, 16, 17, final. Maybe even one night..

"Some moves at guys, take one or two long strides and draw a ton of fouls, get a lot of easy buckets that way. He's so mobile and you want to take advantage of that in that specific way. That just doesn't seem super compatible to me in terms of what those two guys want to do. Yeah, and then another thing on the basketball side of this, it's been said a lot like James Harden when he doesn't have the ball doesn't really do anything. And so and not even like on the spot like just literally does it move, right? And we remember the classic JJ Redick Joel embiid two man game. We're like Joelle possessed this ability to operate it from the elbow and like hit dies. You know, like, and that was part of some of the criticisms with his turnovers that he had. Tunnel vision and these developed himself into a better passer and you wonder what James Harden even do that, like unlock those things again for Joel. Probably not. He hasn't been this kind of like off ball like sort of, you know, read and react kind of guy. He's just been give me the ball, set a screen, I'll find the creases in a defense. If they switch, I'll beat the guy in front of me. He's beating the guy in front of him at a less and less clip. You know, God bless. Having said all that, though, I do wonder if playing with an embiid and making those necessary tweaks, not necessarily sacrifices, but tweaks to his approach is better than going out there with Kessler Edwards and Deandre benbury and just rolling back like the early era Ryan Anderson rockets and just doing the one man show thing. It must suck to do what he does right now and to be right back into the situation where he has to do everything. When on one hand, maybe that's his preference, but on the other hand, you know he's getting up there in age, it would be nice if Kyrie was there all the time to at least handle half of the burden. I don't even know that his preference is to do everything so much as he wants to operate in space. And there's minimal space. There's minimal guys on the floor who can threaten to shoot. It's rough right now for the nets, just in terms of the execution of their offense because it's very much harden and patty mills and offensive rebounds. That's kind of it. That's their whole engine. Yeah. Yeah, you can see it last night when Hardin wasn't on the floor, like just forget about the concept of shot creation on this team without Kyrie. When patty mills is on the floor, the Lakers were just loading up on this dude. You know what? We ain't worried about nobody's shooting The Rock. Excuse me. This one guy who's a threat from three for real. And then there's you. It was just so easy to guard this team without carrying it. Katie, but that being said, like, this is not the team, right? Katie's gonna come back eventually. Kyrie obviously is doing his role games who knows if a resolution will come in the state of New York. You know, I told you guys, we got a new black mayor. This guy is breaking barriers. So he might restrict, you know, he might lower the COVID restrictions as far as workplaces and all of that kind of stuff. So we'll see. I think this stuff is temporary, the frustrations that harden is going through in Brooklyn. What might not be temporary, though, is if there's resentment built up during this time. If every time hard and checks in for work, he's thinking at home, he's thinking in the back of his mind, why isn't kairi here? Why do I have to do this by myself when, again, patty mills is the only offensive thread on the floor and to that end too patty mills has turned out to be one of the most important signings one of the most important additions of the season, but for totally different reasons than we thought. He's not the piece that puts this mega talented team over the top. Like right now he might be the only thing keeping the bottom from falling out for the nets offense. I like how we're painting harden as if he's about to join like the Reddit anti work movement. Too much. I can't do it. But I do wonder if actually if we're playing devil's advocate to this point, I wonder if it almost works in the nets favor because I wonder if harden gets a lot of the love and the reception perhaps for doing all the hard work while KD is out and while Irving is on this weird sojourn he's on. He is putting he's the one holding down the fort at home, essentially, and I do wonder if there's a renewed appreciation for him day by day, game by game without Kyrie happening. And I wonder if that solves things. Like maybe that maybe that's enough to make him feel good about the situation. Look, I think the playoffs happened last year. Kyrie was out. Again, Hardin was limited by injury. You know he was nursing the hammy. And they couldn't beat the bugs, right? Like I think harden understands like, no, we kind of need all of us. Here and hoping to win. We lost last year without Kyrie. And I was limited. I think he knows that they need all three of their big guys. The team is built based on the concept that they have three incredible players. You take out one aspect of that concept, it's no longer a concept, right? They didn't build the kind of team that was like, all right, a whole slew of competent role players around these two stars or no, it's three stars and we figure everything out, Joe Harris, patty mills, Blake Griffin's broke down body, whatever, right? But that's not what's happening right now. And I think harden stands, this ain't gonna get it.

"Missed the bad three pointer and willie's you calls him over like pigs his head of all that stuff. I mean it just was a different feel around the team. Maybe that gets through to design on. Maybe that a team go from out of the play into either. You know they get into play in or they find a way to get the seven eight seed but i do think a lot of this is going to have to do with how z. Nbi responded with a green. Well let's go back for a to the of playing time in all of that. Like i get why. That's frustrating for some yet. Wants to come on and take the league by storm and all of us were waiting to see zion. All of us like this might be the most electrifying player in the nba. Right now i get it. I also do have some empathy for the franchise not it sounds like david griffin is making these decisions by itself. It's a franchise wide decision ownership training staffer. Who say okay. Look you're you're lawrence taylor but a basketball player. We've never seen somebody running and jumping like this this that's built like this. You are not in pristine shape. We've never really seen you in pristine. Nba shape in the nba. We have to. we're not. We're not protect you from yourself. We're and we're contending this year. It was never unreasonable. Given the facts that i knew that the public would know that that the pelicans decided we're just going to dial it back. I i understand why. It's frustrating. But i don't think it's like some crazy decision and i don't know if it was maybe people in his campoo want him to get back so he could win wicked year or have some sort of accolate on that first year i know they were frustrated from the six to eight again. That's stuff that had. Zion has said that he wished he could have gotten back on the court sooner maybe six to eight range instead of the thirteen week range but you know sometimes you do have to protect players from yourself at l. will say this for the pels four or five years ago when when when anthony davis when they made the decision to our. We're going to go all in. Anthony davis is second and third year. And we're going to try to make the playoffs right now. We're going meet ryan anderson and drew holiday and eric gordon entire kevin's that group played like less than one hundred minutes together It felt like because everybody just kept getting injury. The pelicans were always at the top of the injured minutes list. And now you go back to last year in a full year under aaron nelson with the pels and he will i think they were first or second in least amount of minutes lost injury last year they were right up there with the bucks when it was all said and done so the stuff they're doing is working but i still. I understand the frustration from zion. Wanting to get out there having all this height and trying to get out there and do it right away but like you said i get it from the team. Spur perspective as well trying to protect their investment. Winning fixes everything. So let's talk about the likelihood that this team can win. last year. they finished thirty one forty one loss seemingly every crunch time game that there was there point. Differential was closer to that of a five hundred team. I guess that's the reason for hope. Maybe i don't know. They were eleventh and offense and twenty third in defense one of the reasons why they are confusing however is despite having the broad profile of a good offensive team in a bad defensive team they trended the opposite ways is the season went on their offense got worse and worse and worse and their defense was in the top ten for the last thirty five or forty games of the season. So it's hard to know what to make of any of that. They were a horrible three-point shooting team. There turnovers season went on and they did not get a ton of shooting on defense. Is they improve. Like they appear to be legitimately. Okay defensive team then you throw in the amount of personnel changes. That happen outweigh the starting back. Court of lonzo ball and eric bledsoe. Who is a complete non entity for them incomes devante..

"And you've got a way through the language games and you've got a way through the way these things are redefined and point to what is real. And i think by the way. There's few people that do that. Better right now than katie. I think there are wonderful. Scholars like had the arcus and certainly ryan anderson and and and robbie george and others that are constantly trying to point this stuff out to us and an certainly ryan's good at at helping us understand it. Katie is so good at taking these very important analyses of the sexual revolution and putting them in language. That gets to the heart of the god-given rights that children have that are being squandered. So it's hard. It's hard to get through this contradiction. Shame because i feel like every chapter of the sexual revolution has been so chock full of contradictions. Right let's let's give women rights and now let's let men assume those rights because they are you know con in they have gender dysphoric. I mean it's just. The contradictions are so stark. It's hard to actually some some them all and it's not just a contradiction within a certain view of sex marriage and children contradiction within the entire spirit of A rights centric victim centric culture because the victims in this case are completely ignored. We we hear a lot of activists make a lot of hay about whichever group of victims where we're addressing at any given moment and many of those are legitimate groups of victims but at the same time katie's point which is so powerful and she really reiterated this and the the time i interviewed her. Is that children in. This case are are predominantly. The forgotten victims. The ones that were not allowed to talk about in all of these arrangements. The the ones who have suffered those those losses and who know about the missing people in their lives in our toll even that they can't care or grieve about that loss because they have You know how they have this artificial family that's been put together but And even beyond the loss they have someone in their lives in this particular case that's been imposed on them who has no biological relation to them. So it's a as far as i. As far as i know in this case it was You know just one of one of these men is their actual biological dad. The other is not so. That's i mean that's the contradiction the whole thing. I think there's something powerful about pointing that out. I do think that if you if you were to get somebody. And i've even done this myself if you get somebody who sort of accepts all these arrangements and just sit him down and i don't wanna say corner than but apply a little pressure and just point out the fact that hey you know these kids they wanna mad but they're being denied that there are people in this in this equation that are missing. What about the surrogate mom is. We just throw some money at her and and problem solve we just just dust off our hands and move on. Do you think that's that that you think it's a valid way of treating Unrepresented or marginalized people. And that's very much what happens. Many of these cases. Yeah that answer. "A bit of a mixed bag in terms of who was on the field. We saw like a tiny. Bit of xavier mckinney. We saw a tiny bit of thorny homes and maybe that was just based on who was available and depth. They just needed to line. Those guys up for a little bit. That just wanted to get them to the younger guys on this defense. But if we're talking about some top performers some guys that really shine in some spots where they kind of needed to if they wanted to fight to make it and stay on this roster. I one oceans immunised made a lot of good plays. I don't necessarily you can say that. He earned himself roster spot in this game. But i think zimmerman is starting to prove that. Hey when this guy is healthy he can be disruptive and he can be a one of the better rotational pass rushers on this roster yet the keyword there is pass rusher and he definitely impressed yet. Five pressures in the game had that one sack on the first drive. Speaking of that i drive. Which is amazing by kevin's too fancy. That's how you really call plays off of each other and just absolutely manipulated. The second team giants defense. It seemed like but up on that same drive. Oceans administers was tasked to be the Contained defender on the outside. And he just kinda got washed. On line of scrimmage ended up on the grounds. That's still a concern for me or administers ability to hold up against the ron. Which is a vital part of what patrick graham wants to do so. I think he definitely did. Good things on tape terms of rushing the passer. We saw a couple of different times in this game but he still needs to be better against the run right now. I would almost look at oceans as maybe that nickel pass rusher guide giant. Bring on. when they're in a four to five type alignment just to me. He looked a bit more comfortable as a hand in dirt defensive end. He moved well enough as a standup pass. Rusher but I thought his just leverage quickness off the ball was a little bit better with his hand in the dirt or kind of fake dirt like substance. Whatever they use in cleveland and yet you talk about the contain and just the the way. The browns moved the ball especially on that first series are say the first two series and joan. I talked about it in our quick reaction podcast last night. The giants need to work on their tackling. This is been two games in a row where there have just been way. Too many tackles too. Many arm tackles too many attempts at a lunge where the defender just kinda whiffs and given up way too many yards after contact. I liked joe. Kelley coming out of tennessee. But damn these yeah. He was coming out of tennessee. The giants had seventeen tackles in this game. And that's not anything that we saw from the obviously first team but still the giants second team is going up against the brown team so you think that would somewhat balance out. But they're way too. Many missed tackles. Yeah devante down to sam beal. Who had are horrendous game. Had three missed tackles the also had given mola had to miss tackles accredited from pro football focus. I'd like to see those on tape. Trent harris had a couple so that is not something that i feel like it's consistent with patrick. Graham hasn't still been the first team. Giants defense still managed just 'undisciplined football and you saw on a couple of those long runs by the ernest. Johnson's why guys just falling over does not executing good technique. It was kind of a hard to watch. It really wasn't and i'm glad you brought up discipline because that was the word that kind of jumped out to me especially watching the giants defense. When the browns would execute some kind of misdirection Sending a receiver in motion or having play action yet. The giants defense would bite hard on that and that that would have them just completely out of position to make a play on the ball and what could have been a three or four yard. Gain turns into a ten or twelve yard gain. Those first two drive. It seemed like the only times the browns were getting ten yards. Pop was if they screw something up. It's what it seemed like. I mean ryan anderson like somebody who usually from my tape study from alabama and even a little bit in washington was disciplined run defender and he bit so many times he was added position. Loss contain. That was actually kinda surprised about how he wasn't a lot of those types of reps number forty six out there late. Thirty six total snaps. You know you have to get your are is with. Get our eyes on a lot of these edge defenders because once the giants actually have some quality edged defenders. I would say Might be one or two that get released. And you're gonna be like okay. That i probably get scooped up by another team. Women's said that in a while about the new york giants. I don't think ryan anderson did too. Well himself sam bill definitely to do to from somebody who deep giants secondary when you have guys at various williams. Who have i would say. Add up and down kind of game better than the jets game but Still up somebody who could crack the roster even in a deep group as a rookie. Just because he's been having such a camp sam bill ryan anderson. Both those guys are guys who did not impress me in alaw. Minimum offense is another one group in there so conversely in terms of talking guys didn't press you. I want to say i found it very interesting..

"Number six and they get a top five two thousand fourteen protected pick. Do you remember what player was in that spot. Who's sarge who's elfriede peyton. That's right new orleans billion. Yes affiliate did like that. Weird sarge thing where they traded peyton to somebody else so anyway that i'm paper just those spots neurons. Noel and alfred paid for drew holidays. A pretty good trade like actually. Don't mind that shade maybe they overvalued a little bit. what though caraba was the next two summers. They spent forty four million in four years on tyreek evans. Then the following year was the omar asheq ryan anderson super splurge right and then on top of it. They just couldn't keep gordon healthy in that tied into really what was going on the organization where it was like nobody in this team could stay healthy ever and you know as you were in their embedded in there that was a recurring theme right as i. Is this a mom and pop organization or is this a real mba organization where they'd take care players and you know this is an a-plus effort behind the scenes. What was your what. Did you learn as you recovering at that time. Yeah i mean. I think the first season i was there. They set records for for games missed because of injury and illness in like i did a story where the lead trainer there was basically like i was asking about all the technology that they were interested in an image. Just heads quote about like like my hands like my hand or whatever. Rely on victor. She is not a great sign. I mean yeah the thing. I always tell people is i think people wanna focus on like they want to look at the pelicans injury situation think it's like a decrepit hospital or something like that but a lot of these. These issues happened on the fringes. Things like you're talking about erik gordon. Who can't stay healthy. But he's also unhappy and in just like that type of thing just festers and it just compounds in like that sir. All of those things tend to build up. And that's the real issue with a small market franchise if is if you don't have the resources or just know how to in order to do those little things that build into bigger successes. I i just think it often overwhelms you at a certain point and to your point like injury stuff like to this day. They brought in the training staff. It seems like there's a better situation there haven't been there long time but it still feels like they're fighting the injury bug today and it's a weird time in the league right because their mentality with davis is like we gotta get center next time right. That's yet they're the this is where the league's going. So well it's omar asheq it's robin lopez over and over again but now really like what the way they should have gone has been like we don't need a center let's go let's go smaller. Let's build like a fast team with shooters. But i just i don't blame them for not realizing it. Because this was the roy hibbert era all the sudden ended abruptly and all the sudden the warriors are sharing this new era but they spent a lot of capital. Trying to put guys next to davis. That was really a waste of resources. Yeah i mean the asheq. Trade was kind of in the following re-signing of him that summer. I believe ooh the record scratch on. Mba big men. Who's like that was win. The door closed and big men. Were no longer the types and so longtime they kind of traded back and forth between Going offense only with ryan. Anderson are going defense only with omarosa they were never in the perfect spot and then it leads to this issue. Where davis doesn't want to play center and then you're trying to like cater to his needs and when you're getting into that situation i think the signing kind of speaks to that you're really trying to appease him maybe that's not best long-term for the team. And so you get into this weird nebulous place where you don't wanna be. Is it just like like. I said before it just compounds in like these things tend to build up well and you of a situation. Where new orleans is the number one draft pick our of the game show are. We sure they should have an nba team. And right. look we just saw it with milwaukee you have the right organization in place in the right ownership and people really investing in. It's basically all they're doing is thinking about how to make this an awesome. Nba franchise despite some market limitations. That's gonna work. You also have him walkie of a legacy of you've fifty years of basketball fans. You have some fun. Things that happen. New orleans says the opposite new orleans said the jazz in the seventies which were catastrophe they end up moving to utah They have this kind of weird charlotte situation that George shinn flee flees from charlotte ends up in new orleans. Then now all that stuff they up going back As an expansion team it's just the fit was never right. We've had moments where You know especially with chris in two thousand eight where they went toe to toe a little bit But it just never happened. These last twelve years they were owned by the same family that owned the football team. We all know what they're going to care about more. We all saw. This seat said those smoothie king center whatever it was called before that where and you just look at this and you go the city staff basketball team so the answer is yes. It was probably properly managed. Anyone should have a basketball team. But when you take a small market combined with some incompetent decisions and The fact that honestly if they get michael kit grow crest instead of davis two thousand twelve. Then what happens. What are we looking at. I mean this team won the lottery twice with two generational talents in the right. You know you'd say zion. And anthony davis are probably the two best prizes of this whole decade.

"Both of those guys have had limited opportunities to really step into a starting role but now here they are with the giants they could work themselves into a high snap. Count position so for talking about these two imp- incoming free agents with with a new team. Who do we think ends up being that takeover player who we ends up getting the most snaps. So i actually a so most snaps. I'm going to go with dental. I think that these two are going to have somewhat different roles. I think ryan anderson is going to be somebody. The giants trust on early downs with those type. Franz doesn't always have to be but when they need the edge set ryan anderson can do. It's probably one of the best things he does in the nfl sending the edge because he's not overly athletic strong at the point of attack in lower center of gravity could deliver nice strike force everything inside or outside depending on what you're trying to do boxer spill and the pass rushing. I don't really see it there. But oh dental. He's somebody i feel you can kick inside. I'm pass rushing down. You'd also want him up off the edge. He has relentless. Motors pass rushing moves. Are i would say solid. He has an array of passage. Moves has a solid inside spin. move heavy-handed type of guy at that just brings a different type of skill set and a little bit more to the table than ryan anderson. But what ryan anderson does well is play run so i think both of them will have their roles. It's able make roster yet. I think that last point is really the the question here i think. More than any of these other roster battled battles. I think these guys are in direct competition for roster scott internet ideal world or maybe a college size roster both of them are on the team and they both have their roles and they can be subbed on and off the field freely and just whoever fits the situation best or whoever is playing best. Guess the most snaps but the nfl has a pretty limited roster size and one of the things we've been coming up against in our position. Previews is just the numbers game and i. I think based on the number of defensive backs the giants are likely going to have to carry the number of office of in pretty much any. Nfl team has to carry wide receivers. The giants certainly love their tight ends. You have to at some point. Make some hard cut somewhere and i think this could be one of those hard cuts end. What is more important for them. The pass rush potential. That betty brings or run defense reliability from anderson. I'm going to come down on the side of a feddie. Just make one clear decision. I think not knowing what's going to happen with lorenzo carter. What's going to happen with shane. Jimenez i think based on last year one of the weaknesses of his defense was there just generating a four-man pass rush one. They could only send four guys and they needed to get the quarterback on the ground they needed to get that quarterback disrupted they struggled with it which yet they had forty sacks last year but nobody outside of leonard williams had more than four and they need guys with just a natural pass rush ability. And i think betty brings. More of that than anderson does the advocates. You could boil it down to odessa. A better run defender than anderson is a pass a pass rusher so you break it down to that. I mean it's like a lazy way to look at it. But i do believe just overall is probably the more well rounded player than ryan anderson at this point. I think that that's always going to be an easy way to pinpoint it. If just breaking it down to the simpler You know the you know the most simpler simple approach when determining who might start at some of these spots or who makes the roster for this giants team is who's the most well rounded do can do the most things i is it.

"And austin johnson's gong to kind of be worked here and there as a four i as three techniques sometimes sometimes passing situations you put him as retail meek or to winds of in some circumstances. Yeah i actually think these guys could wind up with a pretty much even snap. Count split between them kind of talk about heavyweight battle. These are two pretty massive. Do do play a very similar role. But you know like like you said nick. I think shelton will be locked in that tight. Front nose tackle. You know the guy who controls the interior of the rock in the middle of the defense. And i think we could see a lot of that against opponents that use a lot more spread con Spread concepts in their offense spread teams air raid teams. They love to throw the ball outside in the news. Those inside zone running concepts and tight front absolutely. Eat those up and you need good nose. Tackle to run the tight. Front austin johnson. Like you said. He's a little bit more versatile. He's a little bit more athletic and i think he could be used. Maybe a little in situations where you're never quite sure if there's going to be a pass or a run. I think he can be a little. Bit more disruptive. Behind the line of scrimmage. So if you're playing maybe like a four four to five under front Maybe just the normal base three four may not the tight front just a classic three or four. I think. That's when we're gonna see more of austin johnson and it really could come down to the opponent and the match up in the situation in maybe some teams that The rams see maybe a little bit more shelton and then maybe in against dallas. We see a little bit more often. Johnson just based on nothing just naming opponents off the top of my head but i think the key really could have maybe a draw as far as the camp battle goes and i'm sure that's part of the motivation for why they wanted to bring in sheldon is so that they could be versatile in their decision making on who starts wear but i still lean a little bit more towards what nick was talking about. That shelton probably makes the most sense to get the most snaps. If we're talking about who's more naturally built to play. That knows position. And who's done it in lot more of a contributing role throughout his career with dan shell. I mean the guys got athlete. He's a massive dude talking about a space heater talking about a guy who can push the pile. He's probably not going to rack up an insane amount of stats. But if they're trying to replace alvin tomlinson and what he did. They don't need somebody who's going to get tackles for losses and who is going to force fumbles. They just need somebody who is going to be a pain in the ass for the guards and the centers. And that's exactly what dana sheldon is. He's just big sob. That is going to play in there. And i think that that is really all you really need to win. That job within the defense is just being a really really big dude and sheldon the reason why was the first round. Pick someone who can anchor down and just eat does not allow blocked climb to the second level and that makes plate martinez his job so much easier. Take crowd or reggie ragland. Whoever's playing that second linebacker spot. And danny shelton certainly has that ability so last one guys before we wrap up. Today's show and you this one might not necessarily be a head to head competition. You can almost consider this to be just contributing edge. Rusher who wins the job but the two free agents that they brought in this off season or ryan anderson any feddie opening bo..

"Alright giants fans ed. Valentine back here on. Valentine's views podcast talking with patricia trainer. Giants country in the lock done giants podcast as we preview. You're twenty twenty one giants training camp which begins officially on tuesday. Patty we've been talking about offense. Let's talk a little bit about defense and really the one the one topic that i find really interesting. Entering training camp on defense is how the edge rusher situation is going to pan out. I think the giants have so. Many options are on the edge. Do you find that to be one of the most fascinating position groups entering camp. I do you know. There's an old saying you know quant. Quality is better than quantity. The giants have quantity but do they have quality. I think they do you know. I like z's larry i think he's gonna develop into a fine every down. You know edge. Rusher for them If lorenzo carter is fully healthy and it was a good sign that we saw him during the The spring he was on his way to becoming quite a force before that injury that he suffered. Now what about the rest of the gang there. What are they gonna get from. Ellison smith who was deaf. I believe they're fourth-rounder you know is ryan anderson. Done a play a role there What about o'shane zimmer. Says who seems to be the forgotten guy. What kind of role is he gonna play. And then you have some linebackers you know cam brown and carter coughlin. Did some some edge work last year. But you know. I think carter coughlin's going back towards the to being an inside linebacker more than at edge rusher is cam brown a situational guy so you have a bunch of guys there that you know the question is do. They have a guy who's going to be productive or tune. They really need a strong three man rotation i think at that position. I don't know that they have it yet. We have to see if they do but based on what they have on paper you can make the argument that they do but you know what they have on paper versus with they have on the field two very different things so definitely something to keep an eye on and you know the other thing on defense that i'm really interested in is how the how the secondary shakes out just in terms of how patrick graham uses all of the pieces that that they have have competition in the slot. You between darnay homes and rookie. Third round pick aaron robinson. Plus you have several other defensive backs capable of playing in the slot. You've got lots of competition for for backup spots in the defensive secondary. You've got xavier mckinney heading into his second year hopefully his first full season first healthy season. Is there any any position battle. Anything in this secondary that that really intrigues. You enter camp. Just how many different combinations can patrick graham. Come up with. i mean. This is kind of like a rubik's cube in a away except Instead of trying to solve get all the you know the colored squares to match on each side of the cube. There's so many different combinations that he can put together you know. Is he going to put a for. Example xavier mckinney in the slot on third downs whereas aaron robinson gonna fit in. Is he going to be the star linebacker. Is he gonna take over the slot. So there's a lot of questions but there's also a lot of different combinations that i think pacha gram. He's you know if i'm patrick graham. I'm probably sitting there. And i can't wait to run through some of these combinations and see what works what doesn't work and then figure out when i'm going to deploy them in certain game situations and there. There's a lot i mean. There's probably once that we probably haven't even thought of the patrick graham on his long list of you know personnel. Pack is probably has come up with a few new and creative ways to deploy those guys if we know grand patty. He'll he'll he'll come up with a few more of those tuesday morning. Sure he's probably know. Hey interesting things about the giants last season. Patty was that they struggled in some areas on special teams. Graham gano had a tremendous year as placekicker but the giants didn't get a whole lot from their return game canaries..

"At jc late them of the five star offensive tackle. Who came in in this class and the guy that six six three hundred twenty pounds. Go outside. there's a comedy a quickness to him I i think coach. Stephen really wants to see 'cause he take that starting job at right. Tackle as alabama transition as a neil over to mess hats and then defensively Gotta be cool. mckinstry came in the summer. Had a the sprints gives a very good spring interception in the spring game had a fumble recovering the match as wael kasey gob and a competent guy plays with leverage place guilloux place below the poverty. And not think they're so cool. Late mckinstry on defense offensively. Joe joe earl asia hall and of course a jc. Later on that offense blah. Stephen before you go I keep hearing from my friends like you about this. Defense in alabama has not had what i would call an elite defense at least in a couple of years. Will this be in that category. How good are they. Don't be a very scary group and this group has been looking for this moment. The last three years. I think they've been hearing. You're no longer your normal dominate. Your no nobody's ways of you. This group would be playing with the tail on fire lit by christian harris. No will andersen back. You're bringing henry to hotel from tennessee. This group paul. We'll be playing with a mass of hair on fire house. They this this group will be really really close that twenty sixteen twelve but alabama hat with johnson and ryan anderson. Tim williams a makeup. It's patrick reuben. Foster this year's group will be very close that scary. Why twenty sixteen. But i'm afraid to ask you the next question because it may seem so obvious but Any doubt about this team beginning the season or maybe even ending it number one. I don't have any doubts about it. Paul however there are two games. I will look at the game against florida in. The swamp is gonna be very intriguing because emory jones. Emily jones to play that young do can play. And this is a damn munger type of quarterback very good runner but can shoot the ball out there throwing the ball as well yes. They've lost a lot of pieces offense to the nfl. But like emory jones gaming floor. And they're gonna be very interesting. Not even get i know people are gonna have to that. Ir volts will be interesting. All this is all gonna of course year head coach. They come out high for grandma. Remember two thousand nine gene shares. Remember that all they have to the end around rivers wells had the bill. Theun trick has built an onside kick came back and scored again. Yes auburn lost that game. They came hyper aggressive type. Aggressive hyper aggressive of gus malzahn. Blind horse come up boys. You say you don't know what the strategy is. You don't know what his team is. You don't know whether it's emo is so she could be hyper aggressive as also jordan. Hare stadium is one of the only places where when nick sabin touches his split down. There's no bs not environment alabama stuff a loss and jordan here. Twenty thirteen suffered a loss there. Twenty seventeen now for a lost twenty nine. I'm not saying auburn. Wins the game but i am saying shirt and hare. Stadium is one of those events were nick save has not quite physically just automatically dominate man. I was counting on a lot of things from you today. But i wasn't counting on that stephen m. Never never never a dull moment with you. Come back soon. All the best police should politics. Yeah you got it. The one and only stephen. "Are then magically it changes who we are and that's who we are and that's where we see so many of the confusions so this is an entire weekend that will look from a multitude of angles at one theological concept that i think is fundamentally essential to a christian worldview and culturally right now crucial to our witness and that's the image of god that will in other words who are we as human persons understanding when it comes to abortion and bioethics when it comes to sexual morality when it comes to dealing with the really hard questions like for example the racial divide in america and everything else and of course we know about all the letters of the acronym all our fundamental misrepresentations about what it means and i mean the lgbtq. I a acronym The one that keeps growing all of all of these are misunderstandings about what it means to be human. And here's the good news about it. Is that christianity has the best answer on the market about what it means to be human by far every religion has to make has to answer that question. Not only where do we come from. And what's right and wrong but who are who are we as humans. Are we different than the animals. And how and why this is. The fundamental strength of the christian worldview tragically. I think if you went from church to church to church and said hey guys what are human beings. They might answer right. That they're made in the image of god. Then you say well. What does that mean. What difference does that make. What is the image of god. And then i think you hear a lot more crickets and so that's why we're locking in on this issue because again i'm gonna say it again. Foundational to a christian worldview. That's big enough to understand what's happening in the world. Crucial to our cultural witness right now. In a cultural moment where there's no agreement on what it means to be human. What grounds are human dignity value all that other stuff so the wilberforce weekend is one of the events that chuck colson created years ago. We've been carrying it on Since then and we always try to help. Christians understand the cultural moment better. That's what the event has always been about. We've got a deep dive intensive on images of male and female on friday and then we are talking about the intersection of the image of god and culture. Friday night and saturday speakers. Include the benham brothers You know those guys from charlotte mclaughlin and a wonderful new. A new name for us apology apologised. We've also got a less aerobic children's. yeah lisa. And rebecca rodin great book confronting christianity. And of course. Lisa with the bulk. Another gospel great books. And you're having to listen to great. And then. Of course carl trueman ryan anderson people that are just helping us understand the anthropology of our moment but at least it showed us. I'm really excited about her session. Because i think In her take that liberalism are progressive. Christianity is a different gospel. That means that you believe different things we know. It believes different things about human sin and salvation. But she's going to suggest that they have a different view about what it means to be human. I mean that's that's huge. If you have a different theology in a different anthropology you're definitely talking about a different religion. You just said something jonah. I want to come back to you. Said that these this new morality that's being pushed on us. Lgbtq ira as you mentioned is really the fruit of what people think about what human beings are also mentioned. Okay we're made in the image of god can you. What does that mean unpack that. What does it mean to be. Made the image of god. Now keep in mind friends. You're going to get a bigger definition if you go to the wilberforce weekend but spent a few minutes on that john. What does that mean to be made the image of god book. Yeah this is one of those things were a child can wade inelegant can swim right. In other words you can go deep on this as as you want. First of all the image of god is the fundamental identity that we have as human persons in the creation story. So this is what makes us different than the animals of everything that god made. He only gave his image to one thing that means first of all we can do certain things like god. We reason in ways that are different than analysts. We imagine we create right. I mean humans eat. We garnish our food. You know to me. That's the only garnishing you need is bacon. But that is a pretty cool thing when you think about the power of the human imagination. We're gonna come back to this on proverbs. Four twenty three the ability of humans to look at the created order and then imagine a world that doesn't exist yet and bring it to that. That's that's the image of god. We see what humans can do. We also see the relational aspect of what it means to be human right. So we're not just in the image of god. We're in the image of the god that actually exists which is trinity. God the father. God this god the spirit. Most religions most worldviews will treat relationships. It's something that humans do. Christianity sees relationship as being part of the identity of god himself so relationships aren't just what we do. They're who we are right. In other words you can't be relational psalm. The psalmist will tell you one of the things that means you're known buddy you know you might think you can hide from god. This is a very relevant point by the way with proverbs. Four twenty three. You may think you can hide. You can go to the heavens you can go to the depths of the grave and god sees you. God knows you. And i i. I've done. I've talked about this with enough college. Students that the idea that god sees them and knows them is for some a a source of incredible meaning and encouragement. And for some it scares the you-know-what out terrifying. Yeah terrify everything. The other aspect of this is. I think really fantastic. Which is if you just look at genesis one verse. Two where's is. The earth is formless and void and you watch the actions of god for the rest of genesis one which he speaking and by speaking he's filling the emptiness informing the formless. Nece right so he. He speaks the light into the empty darkness and then he separates the lighten like from the darkness. So he's giving the day and night shape and the light and darkness shape and the dry ground and the expanse separation and the waters and then he fills all of this creation with living creatures. And then what does he do. He separates them in their own kind. So the whole genesis chapter one is god solving the problem that genesis one two describes that the earth is form was important. I'm not talking about the age questions. And the gap theory. I'm just talking about what we actually see there. And then what do we what happens. Well genesis one twenty six twenty seven. We have the image bears popping on the scene. And you have a couple of things that take place. number one is The language changes up until that point guy creates by saying let there be and poof. It happens but then he says let us make so you have this trinitaria in conversation and then instead of just us pooping into existence. So to speak. You actually have god forming man out of the dust of the ground which is physical breathing hindu breath of life which is spiritual man becomes a living soul so the separation in the human experience not between our bodies and our spirits are between the flash and the soul to be so as to be physical and spiritual which is huge in a culture. That says it doesn't matter what your physical body is. It only matters what you feel inside. The bible doesn't allow us to separate our bodies. The created way that god made us in which he called good in fact he called very good from what we feel are feeling doesn't dominate our bodies in other words we are designed we are given to ourselves. God creates us so so the importance of the physical body is huge.

"They will be much more likely to respond. If in twenty twenty two the election gives the gop control of the senate I think what we're seeing here. Is that donald trump longer in the white house with. Bill barr. No longer the attorney. General big attack is flexing its muscles and this probably means that conservatives and people of faith are going to have to consider what are the limits to the liberties of big tech. Yes it's a private business and so amazon has freedom to do what it wants to do. But all of our liberties have limits. And we're going to have to think really hard about what should the limits be when it comes to the liberties of major tech corporations that control so much of our public life in our digital public square and eighty percent of the book sales globally. So that's big. That's a big number. When harry became sally responding to the transgender moment by ryan anderson is available at barnes and noble dot com and through. The publisher encounter books ryan. Thank you for being here. Thank you immigration has been on the forefront of european politics in recent years well as american politics debates about the failures of multiculturalism have dominated discourse in many countries throughout europe what effect the sweeping immigration policies had when it comes to culture freedom and women's rights. Joining me to discuss. All of this is activists. Research fellow at the hoover institute and author of the new book pray immigration islam and the erosion of women's rights ion hersi. Ali joins me. Thank you for being here. I want to start with a line from the book. you right. It's one of the rich ironies of early twenty first century history. That the single decision that has done the most harm to european women in my lifetime was made by a woman you were referring to. German president uncle merckel and her decision in two thousand fifteen to do away with the limit on the number of asylum seekers who could come into germany. How did that decision harm european women. I think the decision wasn't based on a policy. It wasn't thought through. It was done on the spur of the moment spontaneously. And it was driven by compassion. So i want your viewers to understand that Chancellor market was actually acting You know she was a empathizing sharpened by compassion but the outcome the unintended consequence of that moment was that utopian some of the european neighborhoods and streets were flooded with men who come from countries with hostile as to women and some of them started acting out on the streets and there are innocent women in europe regardless of skin color or age or what they wear who uh subjected to creating behavior catcalls sexual harassment creeps and worse. And yeah again. I repeat. It wasn't done..

"Is As close of a call you can have in catching opportunity in football. He's got that risk under it, and one of the tips kind of tilt off the wrist and hits the ground. And they call it incomplete. It is an A C C officiating crew here today. By the way. We're down to We moved the ball back to the 28 yard line from the right hash mark three. Nothing rebels leading Indiana is in field goal range now, but you know, coach Alan he wants six. Now it comes back. The total turns hands the football off and nothing doing up front. All Mrs Defense won the battle up front there against Ellis, Fourth down. I'm gonna go for it. Almost did a really good job and getting into the gaps. Multiple down lineman Gonna fire into a slant. They call that a Roger or RAM slam. Indiana was really good on fourth down this year 65%. This is fourth and one on the 27 yard line quarterback Jack Tuttle, making just his second start number 14 in the Indiana Crimson jersey. Here is over to the sideline for the play called Snap Comes back handoff goes inside a flag is thrown and all this is able to chop the running back down. That was James as Ryan Anderson came through to make the play. We have a flag on the play. The oldest players are pointing it, Indiana Illegal shift office to man moving now getting surprised to the snap five yard penalty 54,000 just to kind of explain that legal shit to put the people you can only have one offensive player moving at a time. This is a great penalty shift up. You can't decline it because the penalty so they did. Well, This doesn't get the ball here, even though they made the fourth down. Stop. That's a penalty. You bring on the punt team and get rid of, you know they're gonna kick. They're gonna kick the field goal now, So in other words, all miss made the stop on fourth down, but they say the shift occurred before the snap. Wow. So the penalty in essence is gonna give Indiana chance to tie the game. Here's Charles Campbell could be a long field goal of 50 yard attempt for him. He's one of one this year from this distance. He had a 52 yarder against Michigan. Here's the snap. It's good. He's got plenty of leg and this pick is right down the middle for Charles Campbell, and this game is tied. 33 to 47 to go. The illegal shit penalty ends up in the best thing that happened, the Indiana they get one more chance, Alan says. Let's kick it. Give him three points here. That's a really strong leg. That would have been good from probably 58. Maybe 16 split the uprights. Really well kicked the protection of front. So really nice deep Pick Indiana three and old mystery, You know the Hoosiers air playing in consecutive January Bulls for the first time ever. This is kind of new territory. For Alan. He's trying to change the culture way are not just a basketball school way are not just a basketball state. We could play good football in Bloomington, Indiana. It takes a lot of years to finally change the perception of that, But you know, he's after a great start his name just give him back his fourth year, they wanted to win a ball game. That was his goal. Last year over in Jacksonville with five minutes to go against Tennessee. They had a 20 to 9 leaves with five minutes to go in the game and lost. So that is kind of the psyche of an Indiana player like We almost had it last year in Jacksonville. Let's get it done this year in Tampa, 33 the score to 47 to go in the first quarter. Here's the kickoff coming back to Ole Miss Dennis Jackson backpedaling into his own zone, fields it with Willie Mays s basket catch and takes a knee. It'll be a touchback. With exactly 2 47 to go here in quarter.
