"For Ruth whitfield Harris discussed the gun violence and racial tension raging across the country And I do believe that our nation right now is experiencing an epidemic of hate She went on to call on Americans to come together and not give in to fear the mass shooting at tops friendly markets and buffalo claimed the lives of ten people earlier this month Ruth whitfield was 86 years old according to The White House Harris met with friends and relatives of whitfield prior to the service Tomorrow President Biden will visit the small Texas town where 19 children were killed in Tuesday's mass shooting at an elementary school speaking at the university of Delaware's commencement ceremony today Biden said he'll be meeting with grieving families He called on Americans to join hands and make the country safer in the face of fear and violence The White House says the bidens will meet with community leaders religious leaders and the families of victims during Sunday's visit to Yuval Texas I'm Chris coraggio You're listening to Bloomberg opinion I'm Raleigh Quinn Do get in touch by the way old comments opinions thoughts welcome I'm advani Quinn on Twitter or email vin at Bloomberg .NET and by the way Bloomberg opinion is also available as a podcast on Apple Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts We're with admiral James stavridis former supreme allied commander of NATO's allied command operations His new book has literally just hit the shelves It's called to risk it all 9 complex and the crucible of decision He analyzes what goes into making great decisions and maybe not so good decisions in moments of intense crisis Want to turn our attention now to NATO and the question of expansion Admiral is broadened by partisan support in the U.S. for Finland and Sweden joining NATO turkey obviously blocking it Does turkey have good arguments to make No they don't And let's start with the qualities of these two nations So sweet that Finland had commanded their troops in combat they deployed alongside NATO troops in Afghanistan They operated in the war over Libya They were part of our efforts data efforts in the Balkans I know the quality of these troops very very well They are bringing professional highly trained and technologically advanced The Swedish grip and fighter for example is among the very best in the world I guess if you can build a good Volvo sports car you can build a fighter pilot plane as well So they bring real military quality Second they have a history of fierce independence the fins of course bought the Soviets to a standstill and the 1939 winter war And then that ethos I think will be of benefit to NATO and third fireplace Bonnie geographically this gives us a northern Flank in the alliance and more landscape if you will in the high north in the Arctic both Sweden and Finland are nations So there is every reason to bring them into the alliance turkey on the other hand has a series of bilateral annoyances I would categorize them as between they feel themselves in those two nations It's not appropriate to hold up these applications I don't think turkey will continue to do so Well it's a pretty bold step on the part of both Finland and Sweden to want to join NATO in the first place but it does seem like a pretty broad accusation to suggest that those countries are places where quote representatives of terrorist organizations are concentrated how strong of an argument at all is this on the part of turkey I don't see it as a strong argument in the league and turkey has deployed that argument toward other NATO countries The Turks often say that one of the leaders of the movement he happens to live in Pennsylvania in the United States and they want him extradited but they've not given us any reason to extradite him and neither have they given the suite to defend the appropriate documentation that would lead to an extradition It's more annoyance than anything else And I think turkey is in the wrong place on this one You know turkey admiral has suggested that it might consider leaving the alliance if it's forced to accept Sweden and Finland would it follow through I highly doubt it I have spent a lot of time in turkey my grandparents by the way were born in turkey in what is today is merely born in the city of Smyrna in as Greeks They were invited to leave shall we say in the 1920s So I know turkey quite well And I will very quickly say turkey has been a very positive force in the alliance They deployed on every mission we've asked them to come on and they've done extremely well militarily I think they take pride day the Turkish nation take pride being part of NATO and I don't think they will simply walk away from the alliance What would NATO be if turkey one of the founding members we should say left Actually turkey and Greece came in in the first tranche of additional members So they're not true founding members but your points extremely well taken I think the NATO alliance would continue on and will continue to be very strong but of course it would be diminished by the departure of any of the nations Today we have 30 nations in NATO Many have joined and none have left Let's hope turkey does not begin that pattern I think it would be bad for turkey and bad for the alliance I mean it's a real matrix of relationships as you said turkey's part it does have to navigate some kind of relationship with Russia still presumably could it safely leave Vladimir Putin's orbit even though Russia is a trading partner and ally and it needs Russia for food and energy imports in particular I think they can and I think they should And the rest of the alliance would be very happy to be helpful to turkey in that nexus of relationships And let's face it many nations are going to have to make some tough decisions in the days ahead about their relationship with Vladimir Putin's Russia And I say that specifically Vladimir Putin's Russia The Wheel of Time will turn and at some point in the future Russia may well be welcome back but for the moment we all need to adjust our relationships I'll close with this People talk these days a lot about the great resignation or the next Great Recession I think what we're going to see vani is a great rewiring You're going to see energy fuel food a query and products These are going to be rewired away from Russia in a way that will diminish them ultimately Admiral we're getting in slightly into details here but there is a question of an arms deal and a refund that turkey is looking for of $1.4 billion It was a deposit for an F-35 order What happens with that is it fair for the U.S. to hold onto that does turkey have a point I think on that one turkey very much has a point And again all of this fell out of the Turkish decision to purchase the S 400 weapons system since he said he wanted to go into detail a very high end ear defense system And that is what led to their expulsion.

"The top stories we're following for you on WTO president Joe Biden delivered the commencement address at the university of Delaware today He urged graduates to come together to help America heal The president and First Lady will travel to uvalde tomorrow to grieve with families there after 21 people were killed in a school shooting The actions were more notably the inaction of local police in uvalde is now the center of an investigation the delay in confronting the shooter who's in the school for more than an hour could lead to possible criminal charges against police vice president Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff attended the funeral of Ruth whitfield which field at 86 years old was the oldest of ten people killed during the racially motivated mass shooting at buffalo's top tops friendly market on May 14th Harris was not scheduled to speak but she did make some impromptu remarks Stay with WTO for more on these stories in just minutes Jurors in Virginia have acquitted a former Virginia tech football player of second degree murder A two day was found non guilty in the 2021 death of 40 year old Jerry Smith of Blacksburg a dating app had matched the two and prosecutors alleged that a two day became enraged and beat Smith to death when he discovered he was a man and not a woman Coming up in money news Honest tease story before Coke decided to cancel it I'm Jeff label Three 18 Back to Joe in the WTO traffic center Shane it's a gorgeous sunny Saturday afternoon I'm looking out over the bay bridge agency in that bumper to bumper traffic and it's especially so on the westbound span so much so that the Maryland toll authority has changed the two way traffic It's now three lanes headed for back towards Annapolis two lanes headed towards the eastern shore So that means you're going to start to see the delays stack up a little bit more from sandy point much slower across the span in the eastbound direction Westbound we should start to get some relief But as of right now you're backed up to Thompson creek road getting back towards Annapolis from the eastern shore Elsewhere in Maryland it's going to be slow volume only on the BW Parkway headed northbound from green belt up into the NASA Goddard area Southbound we had an earlier crash looks like it's gone between one 75 passing 32 northbound here a pretty good shape 95 makes a great alternate between the beltways Two 70 northbound we're still seeing residual delays from the earlier crash that we had after one O 9 Hyatt's town So you're going to be slow southbound 80 urbana down to about I'd say a little bit past the monocacy river north and you're going to be slow and stretches from clarksburg through highest town You're in good shape after that Over in Harper's ferry they are alternating traffic across the bridge on U.S. three 40 Use caution They may have temporarily closed the bridge entirely to remove that traffic so expect a significant delay on U.S. three 40 across the Shenandoah Potomac rivers if you're going through harpers ferry this afternoon Over in Virginia 95 southbound is looking a little bit better as you head from lorton across the aqa qwan That's the only delay that we've got northbound the express lanes are fully open And so those delays are going to start to ease out pretty quickly but right now you're still on the brakes from woodbridge up to newington In the district it's going to be slow across the case bridge and the 14th street bridge in southeast southwest freeway Looks like it's a little bit slow just with holiday traffic on the George Washington Parkway Remember we've got events happening in the vicinity of both the Lincoln Memorial and RFK stadium.

Mass shootings happen so often in this country there's a formula for what happens after the fact The community holds vigils local and state dignitaries come to console and often There's a presidential visit That's what happens today as President Biden and the First Lady traveled to buffalo New York to spend time with those grieving the ten lives lost But even though the pattern of events after a mass shooting is familiar the pain each family feels after the loss of their loved one is particular and devastating And pierce Joe Hernandez is in Buffalo He's been talking with the families of some of the victims and he joins us now Joe thanks for being here Sure This was a racist attack happened on Saturday at that grocery store The tops grocery store in Buffalo it shocked this community a mostly black neighborhood What are you hearing from folks there particularly the relatives of those who died Yeah well I was at a press conference yesterday with the family of one of the victims Ruth whitfield She was an 86 year old black woman who just come from visiting her husband in a nursing home up the road and her son garnell whitfield who is a former buffalo fire commissioner spoke about his mother But we're not just hurting We're angry We're mad This shouldn't have happened We do our best To be good citizens to be good people we believe in God We trust them We treat people with decency And we love even our enemies And you expect us to keep doing this over and over and over again Yeah I would field with speaking in a church auditorium there surrounded by family members some of whom were crying and you could really feel that anguish echoing around that space People are just angry that a white supremacist came into their neighborhood and specifically targeted black residents and then shocked that it happened at a place like a grocery store and in particular dis grocery store which is a sort of hub in the neighborhood Can you tell me more about that neighborhood in east buffalo Yeah it's predominantly black and it has a rich black history and culture outside the supermarket I talked to pastor Tim newkirk who works with ministries and he told me it was famous for a bunch of things In fact including the first Buffalo Bill stadium and historic theaters and libraries and that all made the shooting just so much more painful It's just so much rich history so for him to pick this community was pretty much designed because this is the melting pot You know we have thriving banks restaurants barbershops you know the fish market This is a history that is preserved Newkirk said the community was already actually started to forgive the shooter and but it really goes beyond just that neighborhood I mean the whole city is feeling this people describe buffalo which is called the city of good neighbors as a really tight knit community for a city of its size If we could turn for a moment to the investigation what more to authorities know about the alleged shooter They say that he was in a buffalo at the supermarket in March and also that he was there on Friday the day before the shooting and they're not releasing many more details The investigation is ongoing and there is a felony court hearing for him scheduled for this Thursday So as we noted President Biden and the First Lady Joe Biden are expected to visit buffalo today any word on what their message will be A White House official says the president will visit the top supermarket site and he'll meet with family members of the victims as well as law enforcement officials and first responders Biden will also make remarks and call the shooting an act of terrorism ask Americans to reject these racist and hateful ideologies excuse me And he'll also call on Congress to pass new gun measures to keep hands to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and people with mental illnesses that make them a danger to the public And Paris Joe Hernandez reporting from buffalo Joe thank you You're welcome The Ukrainian defense of the as of stahl's steelworks in Mario pole has ended President volodymyr zelensky called the fighters weeks long stand against constant Russian bombardment a modern day battle of Thermopylae Hundreds of soldiers who had been barricaded in an under the sprawling steel plant have now been evacuated to Russian held territory President zelensky said the UN and international Red Cross helped We held that we will be able to save the lives of our guys Among them are the seriously wounded they're being provided with medical aid I want to emphasize Ukraine needs Ukrainian heroes alive NPR's Joanna kisses is in the city of dnipro in central Ukraine and she joined us this morning with the latest We know that about 260 soldiers have left the shelters and tunnels under the plant 53 of those soldiers are seriously injured The Ukrainians confirmed that these soldiers arrived at a medical facility in a Russian occupied town The rest of the soldiers the remaining soldiers are in another occupied town and remember there are also many soldiers still inside the plant We don't know what the timeline is to get them out President zelensky has said that.
