"All FIT. There was a piece on medium that I read couple of days ago where some that the title was what are we? GonNa do with all these trump supporters after Biden wins. What do you mean? And Ruth Truth and Reconciliation Man A. Yeah. This person said, we should just love them. Do they deserve it? No would they do it for us? No. But we should just love Them I. Mean when we left the Germans alone they came up with, Nazism we need to do what we did to the Nazis in the forties and the Japanese and maybe we can bring them along I found it so unbelievably. Insulting. That because I have a different point of view than you, I'm suddenly a Nazi or an imperialist or. A danger to everyone there's how. First of all, how serious is the left with things like the Truth and reconciliation? Look when you see people like Robert. Reich who was in the Clinton administration when you see him literally talking about Truth and reconciliation you see other thought leaders in had never trump not much there but the never trump the David. From these people who have gotten everything wrong always, and now they're preparing to be in power again and what that will mean will be putting people on lists people like you and people like me people just because we we think differently than than we believe in something different and and they're trying to craft a world that they wanna live in. We're trying to craft world. We want to live in the differences in the world that you and I want to create Glenn our room has world. Our world has room for them, and there's doesn't have room for us. So I am concerned that they're going to try to all sorts of things I mean this would sort of get us into the big tech portion of this where they'll be further bannings and can you work with credit card companies and can you get a phone and all of these things day? They love they love lists they love this stuff dave, you're Jewish. I feel as I was listening to you for the first time. I feel kind of like..

"Of the time before works every time frankly my dear. I don't give a damn drink looks like we've not here. I'm ready for my close-up. Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of cineflex. I am your host Ethan Colburn. Thank you for tuning back in. I appreciate you guys. I probably say this every episode but I I always really appreciate you guys this week on the show. I have Jamie name is Lexi sister. If you are aware of Lexi from our first episode she came on and talked about Little Miss Sunshine. She's one of my oldest friends and we had a great time with that this song I had her sister Jamie on to talk about do the right thing the Spike Lee Masterpiece from 1989. It's a pretty spoiler-filled conversation. So if you haven't seen the movie, I definitely recommend checking that out in advanced. I it's this podcast is probably pretty different totally from what you're used to so it's it's a heavy movie and we tried to reflect that in the conversation. And then also we tried to tackle some of why this movie is important today some of em, some of the sort racial issues in the film and then and then sort of related back to the topics that are being discussed in the presence. We are two thousand people from Palo Alto and our opinions are around but please I I would love I would love your feedback. That's a conversation so you can contact Me on any of my social media. I leave in the description below this week. We drank a sort of mint gin lemonade which was quite quite good. I just put that recipe up all my social media and I made an extra picture for that picture and I had a pretty fun night last night because of it off if if this episode is a little heavy for you. I I I'm excited to announce that next week is Legally Blond. So that's a that's really really fun movie and we drink Cosmos for that with my friend Sophie. So look forward to that. That's a that's a that's gonna be really fun episode without further Ado. Let's get into the show. Thank you everybody. I'm Jamie. Thanks for coming on Hi, how are you? Good. How you doing Ethan? I'm you know, I'm good overall. I mean, I think this movie like Shake both of us home. I'm a little scarred. I knew that coming in. I definitely wanted to watch this movie because I felt like There's so many white voices and media and I wanted to represent and respect a black boys. And now I'm sitting here realizing I have no authority to talk this. Yeah. Yeah off like I have no authority to say anything but I'm going to do my best and I'm going to be Earnest and I'm going to try my hardest not to say anything that doesn't represent the honest truth. And that's the level of truth. That's the truth Ruth. Yeah. No, I mean like I I want this podcast to be about like I did not make a podcast. It's about the definitive telling of the movie. So it's like it's it it's about your experience with the movie your reactions with the movie how the movie made you feel and stuff. We are two white people sitting here doing a podcast like like I I am not going to have final word on Spike Lee dead. You know, so but but I mean, you know, I I think we'll do our best and drinks. Okay drinks, but so often they were drinking wine now cuz I ran out of what I made earlier we switched. Yeah, so I was thinking about like Brooklyn's initially cuz this is shot in Brooklyn. It's very much like Brooklyn's like a character as much as as much as anything is in this movie, but it's a Brooklyn's kind of a wintry drink and honestly, you picked a perfect day this movie. It's it's literally the hottest day of the year it got to 106 today. This is the hottest Heat Wave we've had all year. It's a hundred and four today as a hundred for yesterday. Yeah. It's very regular six-month. Oh my God, like say I don't I don't doubt. It was ridiculously hot. It was kind of a mint lemon limeade. Basically. I just wanted to make a drink juice. It's like that cooled us down because we were really fucking hot boiling. Like I think it turned out. Well, yeah, I'm trying to figure out if it's already a thing if we can call it. That's the truth Ruth truths rude. That's the truth Ruth is that to like long to like order in a bar be like? Hey, can I have a message through through Thursday? I honestly don't think so. So I would like to say To your listeners. Yeah, my middle name is Ruth. And so I have I have actually a stronger Affinity to those name Ruth than I do. Jamie broke a month Jamie. I was named after my father. So my father's name is James and I was named Jamie and I was named Ruth after his mother and she is been described as the sweetest woman in the world. Very caring very giving and awkward enough her death is the reason my parents are dating. Yeah. Yeah, and so I was named after his side of the family. And for some reason I just always gravitate to those named Ruth and like with Gator Ginsburg. Yeah, Peter Goldberg. Sorry, that's a good roof. That's great. That's just the best route of all time worse than that. I can't compete but I love I love the name Jamie but I love being called Jamie Ruth. And there's only really one person in the world that calls me that oh my mom depending we should say that our first thoughts are high first podcast with a was with Lexi your Lexus sister. I am anyway, if anyone does Lexi from the podcast or just otherwise Jamie Lexi Lexi, Jamie took the Livingston girls Livingston girl. Now, you know my full name. Yeah, we never set it straight, but that that would do it. Yeah, your mom's next I guess. Oh you'll have fun with panic. Good luck with the movie the right thing before we get into like Do the right thing. I want to make sure we're touching on like why is this is this is like such a big question. So. Down as you want but why is this movie just like so important right now because nothing's changed we talked about this during the movie. I was very vocal throwing it. It is definitely a. Peace in the fact that it shows its age, but it's not in terms of his message and that's the most heartbreaking Cruise. and I mean besides the fact that at the end they show I think five or six names of individuals who are murdered by police and we know in the last decade that's tripled.

"That was a mall Santa. Those were boots. Boots at Oh my God. That was a picture of Santa Claus. Painting and suddenly you're like I never saw Santa then then it's like watching the six cents the second time around. It totally. You don't unsee things right like you can't go back. You can't watch. This accents the way that you saw at the first certain. That's what gives you the different Lens. That at the therapist of the beginning on us. You know she's like you need to see the world differently. When he start stripping away these beliefs, you get the different wrens. You see the world in yourself in a totally different way. It's interesting. It's like once you have this belief. You almost have blinders onto the the sort of information is contradictory your Blinder, right? It's like the confirmation bias. If like you're only looking for things that confirm what you believe, but that person that you're talking about. There's probably many times where somebody was late with him, and he didn't hate the person, but you totally ignore that fact, right? Absolutely. That's exactly what it is. We really say that a belief acts like. A pair of glasses where it's like you just see things in a certain way. It's particular activation system. That just always looks to confirm what you already believe, so it's not like when I'll see are all believe it when I see, it is the opposite. It really is the opposite of that, so if we we take a simple example in if somebody has. The belief. I'm not likeable. And somebody walks by me at work in doesn't look at me. Conference Ruth Truth. "Putting some closure on that saying you know what I'm langmore. This isn't for me someone else's taken. I'm I'm never going to have a husband and baby so I might as well. Just forget it. Yeah I the expression that I got from. Her face was okay. I'm I'm not cut out for this life if I'm not this nice happy family. Yep which makes me sad yet. It's very sad. She's nineteen years old. I mean she I know. Get your whole life in front of you girl said Damn Ko. Yeah then we have agent petty fitting Rachel with a wire and telling GonNa Act Natural and giving her some drugs because pettis an asshole right he knows how to manipulate people and he talks about this whole charade of the business shutting down and that's when we realize that he is behind and the businesses being shut down because he needed Marty to call her. Yup Yeah so we thought it was wilkes but it's actually the FBI there. Yep Yep and then the next scene can I talk about this John Jay Darlene. I love talking about Jacob Darlene. So they go to the They go to Wilkes X.'s. Dock and that beautiful boat that we saw in an earlier episode they pour with gasoline and light it on fire and I just have to say when I was watching this I kinda loved the Jacob Darlene. We're doing their own dirty work. So that's true that's a good point. They are not like a if you think back to season one. When del is visiting them you know they talk about how they're very successful and he says something to the effect of well looking around? I couldn't really tell. Oh Oh yeah meaning like. They have a save a nice farmhouse but they don't live a fantasy life at all and so that's just kind kind of how they are. They just get their own dirty work done and then God snell's having sex. I wrote it might. Here's what I wrote my notes. Oh I do not want to see the SNELL's fucking I did my own little hand-drawn Emoji like the open mouth face like all what at first I. I'm like who is having sex and I I would like I don't recognize these voices. I'm like Oh my God. It's the SNELL's serving celebration sex and then Marty I'm sorry Darlene. Wait just hold on before we get to Darlene. Because Jacob says something to her and can't quite at couldn't quite tell I listened to it twice. I couldn't quite tell what he said. I think he said Darlene. You are immortal to me is is that what he said I didn't I didn't I might have to understand it. The the captions on in and see what he said but immortal. Whatever and he he basically basically it was like she wants to talk to him and he goes? My head is an empty. She'll well she's wants to talk to him about having a baby. I don't know if she means hat. I don't think she means having a baby I don't think they can. She tells him she wants a baby and she says I. Yeah what Oh my God. At that point I was like okay. I got to write that down like really Darlene. which which part makes you think you're you're cut out for that Darlene Darlene Darlene? Then we go to. We go to Rachel at the blue cat. And she's like don't turn on the lights and I'm wondering what's going on and she is true rash. Yeah he's so drunk now it's wrong with her. It was that intentional. I I did not. I was not able to figure that out either. I don't know if she was for a minute. I thought she was faking being trashed They don't really make that clear. I don't think she was faking it. But did you catch of course you caught it but she scraped his hand. Oh with her fingernail. No okay. Well that she made a point of like scraping his hand with her fingernail and he was like you know Oh and she made it look like well. That's the question she made. It look like an accident but that's typically how you'd get somebody's DNA exactly so. I'm not sure ooh sure if the plan I mean we were not privy to agent Pettis full plan here so I don't know what's going on. Then he tucks her in. I mean they don't really say anything. She's wired up but she doesn't get them to say anything because she so trashed right and he brings her to lie down on the couch and he tucks Iran and you see see. He covers her with a blanket. And if I I'm not sure if I was getting this right but she bunched the blanket over her chest right he didn't want himbal the Mike. Oh is that what it was. Well I don't know I don't I- sensitive the Mike Czar and then she says they're gonNA find you lock you up or kill you so issue warning him mm-hmm yes I think I think I think you're spot on with that. Take I thought she was just like making sure that her shirt like the Mike wasn't showing which which I did do that. But then after he covered her with a blanket she like bunched at all up over her. Chow K. I don't know I'm not sure if I have that right or not. I was making not at this point. So maybe I missed it but I think that in that moment that that drunken state she's really I think I think she's got a moral dilemma. I actually saying I still care about Marty and I think she's warning him honestly. It's very interesting. We shall see where her mind is. I'm not sure what's going on with Rachel. Well then we've got ruth truth with her plan. B Like we just talked about a little while ago. She did not have success convincing the marina owner to let them invest in the business so she she goes to plan B. and just trashes the dock she takes a powerboat and whips around. And all the I don't know if she actually hit the boats or if it was just damage image with yeah so she did a lot of damage and the guy I don't know if they ever say the owner of the marinas name but I don't know his name but he she knows her The next day they quickly cut to the next morning and you know he says to her. You're worse than your father. Because she goes in with a big smile saying well we know Marty would be happy to invest. Writes all this for you right. So yeah there she gets gets the job done again. And then we've got a couple of quick scene. So we're at the funeral and Wendy's talking to Wilkes basically saying I took care of this for you and it sounds like she offered him a percentage of the profits from the Casino is. Did I hear that right. Wow I didn't catch that either. She said something like how about three and a a half percent of something so I think I think in lieu of the ability to build on the land the mall and the right. He's is going to actually get a percentage of the prophets I don't know we may have to. We may have to go back to some of these things but the next scene. It's a short one but ruth goes into the office where she says she's got a real job at a real office and she goes into Marty's office and then. Oh God Marty your timing is is horrible and he says I need you to not come into the office. And he's got a valid point right the gaming commission coming around he can't really have a convicted felon there but first she barges in. She's so she's beaming. She showed herself that she got this. She's like did you hear me. I got a new business for us to run money through. And he's just like all right cool but you need to just you know. Stay under the radar for a while. Yeah so in Marty's insensitive. That's the thing. He's very insensitive. I wrote the word oblivious. He's he's so focused on the prize. Not that it's a prize that he neglects. I mean he did the same same thing to his family neglected at wife Neglected Children Yep and he suffered the consequences and he's doing the same thing all over again. Yeah God Marty. I hope it doesn't backfire. Well I think I wanNA You don't want to Piss off ruth too much. Well I think again. I think ruth is going to go back and forth this whole season season between you know wanting to please her daddy and wanting to please marty. Yeah Yeah so then. We have a really quick scene of Roy. Away and Rachel the F. B. I.. Agent talking to Rachel and he gives her some drugs and he basically says do better than you've been been doing which I thought was really kind of interesting because that's exactly what his superior told him right in the briefing that they had. I think those exact words taste better than you've been doing. Yep We hate you Roy. Now let's talk about that dinner party because I'm going to bet we wrote down the exact ZAC same quote. Well I'm not gonNA say the quill but Darlene has some nice words for Wendy. She said she pays her. I'll say she says I. Yeah I thought you'd be a real count and Wendy looks at her and goes. Well thank you like. What are you supposed to say to that? I have to comment here. This isn't exactly about Ozark mark but are there some swear words that you just can't like I know you have a problem saying titty bar like you don't like to say titty Bar I don I have a problem with the c word I can say almost any other swearword but the C one. I do not like to say well. If you live in my household you you hear it all and as as you know. No no not directed at me. But I don't live with Darlene. What's going on in your house? No but as you no we watched a lot of British TV. And that's just a common word that they use Okay okay not the darlings British by any means yeah so. That's not a dinner party. I'd really be comfortable hanging out at the snails and the birds but it was very very funny the way that you know now. They've just gotten to the point where they're having dinner parties together right now. Right eating the deer that Jonas shot right. Wendy did not like that. That would have been me. I would have been like I have some bread. Yeah Yeah I all right though backout langmore 's kind of kind of ending with them. This was a big episode for the Langmore 's and Ruth is still pushing Wyatt for his college essay and that that college essay was really league. Poignant in a way I mean I know that why it was trying to be flip about like do you belong at this university and his answer was no. And here's why because I'm a langmore and my that means different things for me. My life is different than your life and he said your mom left when my mom left. But it's it's different than your situation and that had me thinking what happened to his mom because I don't think they've ever address that right. And and that also is a little bit of a callback to win. Ruth comes in to interrupt why it and Charlotte Smoking Weed and when Charlotte leaves if your member Marut says to Wyatt your her daddy could just pay her way into college. You're never going to be like her right so then riot ultimately writes this college essays. Saying I'm never going to be like you right. Yeah which is true and part of me was like damn submit it submit that I know I know yeah I thought so too and and ruth was kind of pissed slash upset teary eyed and again throughout this whole episode. She's just this kind of being confronted with the fact that she is a Langmore and this is her lot in life and what is she going to do about it so she goes and gives her dad the keys to the marina that they now own or slasher investing. And so he can. She says make a job for himself and look busy when when the parole officer comes which means do nothing and and if he wants chop up the boat parts for right resale yeah and he says I I you know. I thought you didn't approve of that kind of thing anymore. And she kinda just shrugs it off and says well what she said. You know the quote. I don't remember exactly what she responded to him. Umbono she just kind of said. Oh well you know do what you gotta do. But how about that closing scene so she goes out there too. I can't remember if they're awesome lots or what. They're too exotic animals. That Russ and Boyd had bought in season one with the idea of breeding them till she finds out. They don't have fucking balls on them right. So they have two females. Obviously and and I'm looking going. I can't believe they still have these cats really. I know why right. And she would have sold them back to someone something and she goes outside to the cage and she's just kind of pensively looking in she opens the door and just says is your fucking choice and that was great. I mean that was everything in the episode. That's at least for the Langmore. That's what it's all about but the the real question is what will her choice. B Yep it was good was excellent excellent ending very very good ending so we've already talked a lot about the title of the episode which is once a Langmore and you know. I think that's going to be a recurring theme throughout the season. Can Ruth Get out from under the weight of the name and I think as long as her father is around. No she can't i. I think once routes starts to turn things around. I think she can be a positive influence on Wyatt. I'm telling you I still. I got my fingers crossed for happy ending for the Langmore. Even if that means kids did yeah as happy ending the that would be a happy ending and then as the show opens we see the giant. Oh Oh the crosshairs and the four symbols symbols. We saw this time. And I'd love it if you guys listening weigh in on this because I can't always figure out what these symbols are so the the first one at first.

And if I I'm not sure if I was getting this right but she bunched the blanket up over her chest right. He didn't want himbal the Mike. Oh is that what it was well. I don't know I don't I- sensitive the Mike Czar and then she says they're gonNA find you. Lock you up or kill you so issue morning. Him mm-hmm yes. I think I think I think you're spot on with that. I actually saying I still care about Marty and I. I think she's warning him honestly. But I don't live with Darlene doing no but as you no we watched a lot of British TV and that's just a common word that they use Okay okay not the darlings British by any means yeah so. I think once routes starts to turn things around..

"Ruth enjoyed confiding in Judd in one letter she he wrote to him about her cousin Ethel Anderson who was also unhappily married. Ethel was trying to bribe young women into flirting with her husband. She wanted to entrap him into having an affair so she could use the evidence of adultery to procure an easy divorce. Route seemed delighted by her cousins Ingenuity Witty as her affair. With judd progressed. She put more and more thought into how she might escape her own marriage. Meanwhile her relationship with Albert remained deeply strained. They often argued about money. Financial stress can be a common source of marital strain rain. A steady by Suntrust Bank found that thirty five percent of participants named money as the primary troublespot with their partner. With the Snyder's there's also argued about ruth staying out late and about how to raise their daughter Ruth one descend eight-year-old Lorraine to a convent boarding in school and she even briefly got door to door sales job with dental supply company to earn money for the tuition but Albert wanted to keep Lorraine in at home and refused to consider the idea of boarding school. Ruth was tired of it. She couldn't stop thinking about how much easier it would be. If he were on her own. She wanted the freedom to live her life as she pleased she was determined to have that freedom no matter what one afternoon in November of nineteen twenty five ruth heard a knock at at the front door and discovered an insurance salesman on her front stoop. Ruth was always friendly with salesman and invited him inside. She said she was is interested in buying insurance but ask the salesman to come back later and give his pitch to her husband. She also had another request. She asks a salesman salesman if he could get her husband to sign a blank policy form. She was unsure how much they would want the policy to cover. She planned to fill in the details of the policy later leader once they came to an agreement on the final amount the salesman was happy to oblige. He returned later in the week and convinced Albert to sign China Blink Policy Application the next day ruth called the sales mental. Let him know that Albert had made a decision. He wanted to purchase riches of fifty thousand dollar policy. It contained an indemnity clause that paid out double in the event of a death by Misadventure Ruth Truth was listed as the beneficiary with the insurance policy in place. Ruth stood to gain as much as one hundred thousand dollars. In the event event of her husband's accidental death. The amount would be worth nearly one point five million dollars today Albert likely. We had no idea ruth had taken out such large policy on his life just as she had done with. Judd's Love Letters. She gave instructions to the postmen to hand and over any envelopes from the insurance company directly to her so that Albert wouldn't see them. Ruth paid the premiums on the policy. The herself even though the expense cost more than half of the weekly allowance Albert gave her to run the household. She figured the cost would be worth the eventual. We'll pay out with the policy in place. Ruth began to think less about how to get a divorce and more about how to become a widow when we return ruthin judd concocted deadly plot to get rid of. Albert's Snyder now back to the story in late nineteen twenty five thirty thirty year old. Ruth Snyder was deeply infatuated with her new lover. thirty-three-year-old Judd Gray. The affair made her all the more eager to be free of her dreary husband. forty-three year old Albert Snyder. After she secured a large insurance policy on her husband's life she had all the more reason to look forward to his demise in fact she seemed ready to engineer his death herself. According according to Albert's family roots first attempt on her husband's life occurred in July of one thousand nine hundred twenty six on a warm summer day Albert was taking a nap in the Living Room Granny Brown was out with Lorraine and ruth left the house to run errands not long after she went out Albert woke. Oh God feeling sick and gagging. The house was filled with gas fumes. He stumbled outside gasping for fresh air when Ruth returned to find him in the garden. She acted horrified. She claimed that as she passed the living room heater she he accidentally kicked the gas tube. Free of the Living Room Wall on her way out the door but it didn't seem like an accident. Albert's sister said that later later the trying to kick the gas to free of the wall and couldn't do it. They thought ruth must have yanked it out on purpose by some accounts. Ruth also made several attempts to poison Albert by pudding by chloride of mercury tablets. In his drinks telling him they would cure his chronic hiccups. The pills didn't kill Albert. The only made him vomit but since hiccups did in fact go away. He apparently apparently didn't question his wife's treatment when poison didn't work ruth reportedly tried to guess Albert again in early nineteen twenty seven. Then she wants more use the excuse that she had kicked the gas tube as she was leaving the house she came home yet again to find him gasping in the street complaining that he had almost as fixated leader at a party with his family members. Albert made an offhand remark about out how close his wife had come to widowhood however he appeared to be joking for whatever reason it didn't occur to him that his wife might actually actually be trying to kill him perhaps because they were ordinary middle-class people living in ordinary middle class life. In Albert's Brits Mundane World Wives complained about their husbands in rare cases. They might even divorce them but they didn't kill them though. The idea might seem absurd according to evolutionary psychologists David Bus. Almost anyone can be capable of murder. Dr Dr Busek said that murder fantasies are incredibly common. In a study of five thousand individuals. He found that eighty four percent of women and ninety ninety one percent of men had at least one clear fantasy about committing murder Dr bus stated though we like to think that murderers are either pathological misfits or hardened criminals the vast majority of murders are committed by people who until the day they kill seem perfectly quickly normal perfectly normal just like roots Snyder but she was serious about killing her husband and she would not be deterred.

We had been away allow. Yes we have any big news in your life. As last time we saw each other big news not really big news. I mean i just got back from new orleans so that was another reason why we haven't recorded anything. I just been out of town. Yes the windy eddie. City is hot in stale in you can swim through the air so thicker yet humidity's no joking south now phone. Oh i thought it was prepared. I got out of the airport gasping for air. Almost what is this but it was really the fun lot of good food lotte great music for that yeah. It was awesome. What was what have you ever been in new orleans before no. Did you see a lot the station seattle because a lot of people have talked to said that like between the airport and downtown you can still see where you are on some kind of behind. There are still some neighborhoods. You could totally see that are there. I saw some houses that just have a facade and that's it sixteen. It's been it's been two thousand eight. Katrina happened two four meeting four okay. It was it was but it's it's been a while and you could still see it for sure and you to trip is like walking around like the french quarter in even deeper into louisiana. There's a seashells all over the ground and like oh that's weird because every hurricane comes that like sweeps up the mississippi a town. It's it's wild to see just shells in the middle of the f. The settlement of young that is interesting. I think the city lost over twenty. Five percent of its population think there was crazy. Crazy may vitamin forty percent but that a lot of the population every team back after after the floods. We went back east. We take a little vacation. Beginning to live is not for sports. Season starts out in my world turns into utter lockdown so does my wife and i flew back east spend a few days on the cape cape went whale-watching. We'll get into that in a later episode saw <unk> not only you'll be some really interesting humpback whale activity but a congress interesting interesting questions and but i don't wanna spoil that that's coming in our next episode of the show <hes> but what i really wanted to get into was last week. I flew across the country twice in thirty six six hours because my grandfather paul muller was honored on the field at the new york yankees game against the baltimore orioles on the fourteenth. Some it was gravel. Rebel was incredible so i wanna kind of want to tell the whole thing so let me start with the backstory mike my grandfather when he was fifteen years old lives in the bronx is the german air germany child german migrants right you know and my grandfather basically was really really sports. In particular he was really into the yankees is like the nineteen twenties and nineteen thirties so he wrote an essay for an essay writing contest and he broke down the entire yankee lineup and why it was the way that it was so like roger marris does this because this little roger marris does babe ruth does this because it will babe ruth us well. He got picked. He got picked to be a win so a he one three thousand dollars in today's dollars cash or thousand right and he got to go to the house of arguably one of the greatest baseball players ever babe ruth. He gets a medium shake. His hand has picture taken him was on the cover of newspaper so that's baxter <unk> everyone in my family except for my mother my father and i root for the yankees right my uncles for the yankees my aunts my cousins and they're all like hard for yankee fans in growing up <hes> you know they were really into the yankees in the nineties arguably the greatest team of all time you know like i couldn't stand the yankees because i felt like they were winner. Pickers felt if they bought on the best players and because we moved to when i was a kid i took my allegiance island san for cisco will get into my ties to the to the organization another time but a long story short. There was a line in the sand. I pick my side and i've always had this anti yankee a yankee opinion ever since now harder to hate this year's team i mean they got a lot of homegrown talent. Guys like judge like judge edge sanchez etc. There's a lot of really interesting and compelling young players but regardless now yankee fan only get the new yankee stadium once i went to the pinstripe bowl back in two thousand twelve when notre dame played rockers really fun game by the way but i was pre pre lit up at the time side surly explored the explore the menu so my cousins ac makes this big push and says i think we can get grandpa honored during a yankee game there i salute to service that we have a chance to do this and grandma's ninety eight years old and we he he starts by like reaching the organization and ninety percent of this. I wanna give credit to my cousin because he he did so much legwork. He did dealt with all the tails he interacted with the yankees. He went to new york archives. I earn library archives and found the original photo film and gave us all like hi rez copy of the news article and everything like that so it's been this really great opportunity for him to reconnect to the history of my grandfather long story short the yankees approve proven right. I checked in a little bit. Everybody in the family did a little something you know. Some people explain what this means. Some people research something. Some people helped rewrite through stuff. You know what i mean like. We did everything everybody chipped in. My grandfather. Get selected and i make the decision like you know. I think i'll try and get a press press. Pass reach out like why not yankee. Stadium has really strict rules about you can't bring laptops in- and you can't bring cameras with lenses over three inches or something they have very stringent rules and <hes> so reach out to the front office talk to a representative. He tells me red big email <unk> big email like hey journalists. I'd like to write this article and talk about the fact that like this ninety eight year old world war two in korea veteran that babe ruth truth was just on the field of yankee stadium the organization gets in touch with me by phone and explains that they're denied my request and then you know somebody else reaches out to be the organization with an email like i just want to explain why we denied your. I have no people the yankees. This is totally equal. This is something i would have liked to have done. I can't to try to get yeah. I mean and i just wanted to take pictures of like before during after which as will get to would have been irrelevant so so so we just got back from the east coast the week before flying is not my favorite thing in the world and physically. It's very helpful. Yeah we talked about this <hes> and <hes> so i catch a red eye on tuesday night at work monday tuesday at the school right sports start up up next week so like my world is slowly getting fuller and so our monday and tuesday like tuesday six thirty at night my flatly plainly nine.

"Got a groove back to name just a few in twenty nine thousand nine ruth made history when she became the first African American woman to winning Oscar for best costume design that award was of course for her work on the blockbuster mega hit Black Panther Ruth is currently on the set of our latest project coming to America too and it was recently announced that in twenty twenty she will be receiving much deserve star on Hollywood's walk of Fame Ruth Carter. Were so thrilled to have you on a podcast welcome. Thank you. Thank you honor to to be here. I think we have to start by talking about Black Panther. It was such a groundbreaking film in so many ways and one of those ways of course was the costuming. Can you tell us a bit about your process. As a costume designer and specifically the integral role you played in helping to bring the Director Ryan Kugler dealers vision of conduct of life well first of all. There's a connection that you have with the director <hes> sometimes it's unspoken. It's an understanding of <hes> African American history in this case Jason The African Diaspora <hes> I felt that during my interview had a connection to Ryan's aesthetic <hes> conversation was easy. It was informative. It was joyful and I I think that in terms of process is an important step that you connect to a person's spirit and their artistry <hes> and from there you are given a script and you meet other people like Hannah burglar and you start sharing. He share information. You're seeking information. It's a little scary in the beginning because it's it's it's an empty canvas and you really want to connect act and pay you know this beautiful tapestry or <hes> and so we share information she tells me where she's at <hes> within the process because they start developing the story especially something like Black Panther very early on <hes> and so I have a lot of catching up to do <hes> and so very anxious about the catching up and so I'm listening allot <hes> observing a lot and I'm thinking about what I <hes> feel that I can bring to what there are already beginning to develop <hes> they they <hes> produced a CA- manuscript of <hes>. We'll Kanda <hes> the different tribes different districts what it looked like and so I take that and I study it. I share it with my crew all study it and then we start <hes> chipping away at the beauty and <hes> you know most of this was led by <hes> our affinity for <hes> telling the story of Africa in its multidimensional way you know it's not this big monolithic place. It's you know all of the tribes and exploring them and bringing that beauty and artistry to life you know Ruth Truth. I love that you mentioned not depicting Africa as a monolith and I think something else you did so expertly is not depict women as a monolith. They are not just sex symbols. They are not just there to at and I think that personally speaking and I've seen a lot of superhero movies. I don't think I've ever seen women superheroes who are so phenomenally well rounded. How did you make sure that that came through in their costumes? Well <hes> part of the understanding that I just spoke about is <hes> being <hes> <hes> apart of something different being <hes> <hes> in interested in changing the view of what people <music> expect into a more powerful and positive way and honestly <hes> that opinion or that motive thinking was led by Ryan Kugler who <hes> said to me we want I want them to be taken seriously. We want the women to lead. We want women to be powerful and beautiful at the same time <hes> and it was really wonderful to hear that come from you know the. The top of our <hes> chain there because you know that's what everything else springs from and you you proceed to craft <hes> the costume in the most powerful the most beautiful way <hes> <hes> there is a lot of involvement <hes> especially with the door Malaysia costume. <hes> marvel is very hands on. I've said they're like the C._I._A.. You have to really you have to really be <hes> knowledgeable Shapur about <hes> the way that they like to operate and win you folder your artistry into that. It actually does work so <hes> the sharing the collaboration the different artists that are involved in in <hes> how the costume looks <hes> in some ways <hes> does help <hes> you know. I don't WanNa be a working on something all by myself. You know I really feel like it's everyone has a stake in <hes> evaluation nation or just contributing to <hes> what we're trying to accomplish with the with regards to that I went off on a tangent there. We love your tangents better than someone else's remarks so please eighteen okay okay. I heard you also use three d printing in the costuming as well can you can you talk about how like how you used that art form. Yes <hes> you know there was a lot of <hes> thought thought about the Queen <hes> one of <hes> one of my opinions was that if she was to wear Crown Kanda and a <hes> you know she would have the best craftsman <hes> available that would create her things. It's afford thinking <hes> nation its highest in technology leading in technology so if she were to wear a crown yes it it could be handmade by you know craftsman but it also could be three d printed and be perfect so I I thought you know she was going to wear the cylindrical shape. The Issue Colo has the this you know shape that can be perfect and I thought that the only way to make that shape perfect would be to three D sprinted to develop it on the computer <hes> which we did and <hes> printed in Belgium and <hes> six months later took about that long we had her crown and her shoulder mantle all three the printed wow but it makes me curious though when you see these costs it must be a trip to see any costume that you make worn Halloween by people who just loved Lum's also get annoyed at like Oh. The crown does not look like that <music> on <hes> I it's kind of like a celebration. You know <hes> so Ainhoa people needed to connect in when they connect. It feels like an accomplishment. You know it feels good. I bet while you're working on Black Panther did you at all have any idea that it was going to be such a cultural phenomenon. I'm like Sandra just talked about everyone was wearing the costumes even to see the movie. Originally they hadn't even seen the film yet and they were already trying to copy your work. Did you know it was going be such a big film Oh. I don't think you can predict that if we could. That would be amazing Siamese. You can't predict that and you don't even want to have that kind of thing in your mind <hes> because I think it's a distraction too. You know what you're trying to his a lot of decisions. You have to make you have to be focused uber focused but you can't imagine <hes> being on a set like that and not thinking that you doing something special. <hes> we had a photo oh session with the Royal Family I call it the Royal Family the royal will conduct family so we have like Panther and remote Queen Raimonda insuree and the door <hes> ah Koy aid or Malaysia you know in the Kea Michael Michael Jordan as <hes> kill monger and Zuri all of them the royal family and <hes> that's when it dawned on me when I saw them all standing there together to take a photo or one of our sets I was recycle. Wow I was jumping up and down inside thinking this is wonderful. I follow you on Instagram. Actually a stock you on instagram. Let me be correct and I know I know that you're active on social media. Have you ever seen someone to replicate a costume and you just had to. Maybe you know say something or give them a little like I get him. I give them a thumbs up at Halloween. I see them baps girls at Halloween gene and I'm like yeah go get you you get your baps on a lot of artists talk about studying the craft of those who have come before them. Are there costume designers who've inspired you and your work. Yes <hes> I feel I of I learn color Palette from an Roth because I studied her films like places of the heart to Danny Glover insists basic and I really love those costumes so much I began to just look at all of her poems and I noticed you know how she handled color within the composition of the film and <hes> so she was a big inspiration for me <hes> as a costume some designer and a storyteller your mentors come from the most unlikely places they don't necessarily all come from other costume designers <hes> so spike Lee I would say you know gave me the bravery <hes> to create and <hes> you know it was very supportive for longtime fourteen films so <hes> my mentors are you know all shapes and sizes spike Lee just his aesthetic nick is so completely him yes it is yes and when you see a smelly movie you know and you know it is and he makes bold choices with color. I mean with the exception of she's got a habit which is black and white but he makes such bold choices and you know sometimes those can be risky when you look at the risks that other costume designers make. Do you ever think Oh gosh. That's just crazy but it's crazy enough to work. <hes> I see risks. It's not easy to take Chris <hes> as a costume designer because it's not just you that makes a lot of decisions. You have a studio. You have a director. You have a lot of people who <hes> you know it's not. It's a big money game. I guess when you have twenty million dollars seventy million dollars you know to create a piece of work. You know not always taking risks but there are some amazing risks out there which I think was collective <hes> decision. Maybe <hes> Mary Queen of Scott's. They used a lot of Denham to make all of those. <hes> beautiful pieces and denim is like a sturdy fabric. It's di -able. It's it's shapes well so it was a smart choice so you know risks. Are you know are not easy to to do you know a crafting your your voice like spike. Lee Does is not as easy as it may seem can ask you about your personal aesthetic. Like what do you like to wear. Oh my God I anti fashion. You have to ask you ambrose. I love everything she wears. She's loved mazing in her style. I'm I'm your everyday girl. I like to wear t shirts shirts and Yoga Pants and blazers and a little bit of a twist with a little African or a little Asian or little whatever I'm feeling <hes> I'm pretty simple in that way. I like to be comfortable a half to be comfortable. You know I'm up at four in the morning out by five thirty so I WANNA feel like I'm still in bed so my clothes have to be cozy. was there ever a movie that influenced your personal sense of style or even just need. You aware that costume costume design was a thing like when you were young like a young girl or or growing up well not specifically because I didn't decide to be a costume designer till I was junior in college. I wanted to work with Special Ed. I wanted wanted to be an artist. I was drawing so <hes> you know I could have been influenced later like by Annie. Hall I remember having a big men's hat that I would wear plaid dress and boots and and I felt that people were saying you very any Hav and I saw the film and I was like yeah. That's me doing it. I was actually very ruth card exactly yeah in college. I think yeah it before me. I was influenced by her. You know and what meet you shift though from wanting to do art to wanting to make clothes I kept thinking as a special ed major that I wanted to work with theater for the deaf and do you know mind pantomime I was I was amazed at sign language. I thought it was just amazing how they could talk with their hands and there is was so expressive <hes> but it was leading me yeah that was pushing me back into theater and I you know dabbled in it in high school. You know as all kids. Do you know. High School plays in summer school programs so it was a something I wasn't unfamiliar with and. And I would hang out with you know other theaters students <hes> because I'd audition <hes> as a special ed major and then I just decided my junior year that I would change to <hes> speech in drama it was called at Hampton University. It was Hampton Institute then and yeah I switched and never looked back all right well as much as we're having. We need to take a quick break more conversation with Ruth Carter after this.

"Puna de do the Dale granted you can't do the deal until July first because that's when it starts? But if you so hail being that you wanna move LeBron James don't worry about who else. You're going to get go do the deal. Well, have there not been reports that Jeanie Buss has contemplated moving LeBron? Yeah. Do you think they're kind of leaning toward out on? I do I contemplated genie knew what the hair she was doing. I guess we will both wrong. Hey, you're it's fair to say that. But I'm just saying what about LeBron right now. What's his mindset? Why doesn't he speak out? Why don't they talk Talking about? about him talking about for what what does he not care anymore care if you really cared? Why wouldn't he make a statement? Because because you see LeBron he even unattainable situation. If he speaks out he's trying to run the team if he doesn't speak out. He doesn't care. So how does he win? He's around a bunch of people that don't know what they're doing. So what's he gonna speak out and say is content with that, maybe content? What maybe that takes all the LeBron is my off season. Maybe LeBron says well now this is a great situation because nobody really expects us do anything and I can play Michael Jordan in the off season. Nobody can be LeBron James one hundred percent healthy in do give him some helping. Let's see give him some hail. Well, I'm just saying if I'm Jeanie Buss, Linda Rambus, maybe I sit back and Kurt Rambis and say, well, let's roll the dice on July. First and see if anybody will come here other than Kimba Kimba won't get it. While you see my thing is. You so been that LeBron James is trying to control your franchise. Why do you care who you get move hill? And then take take a coup. Why if he was willing to come or get Ben Simmons and Cohen pair them get Ben Simmons and Karen impair them, why are you worried about LeBron don't worry about who's over those interesting? You bring that up. There would be some of those free agent superstars on the market who would be more interested in playing with Ben Simmons than with LeBron other. No, he can't use. I'm gonna get all the shots. I won't the shots that he should be taking Ruth. Truth. Yes. But you also don't have the LeBron fallout factor because whoever is the co star becomes the scapegoat. The quote unquote goat, and you got the scapegoat. Because if LeBron goes south, LeBron fails, you're not gonna blame. Lebron you're gonna say he just didn't get enough L from so and so the measure question if Rodney hood had played LeBron have last year Leckie played for Portland, are we what kind of conversation we have it. He could converse coming out the giving you twenty five. He's coming up bitch. Give your nineteen you remember when Todd Lou tried to put him in a game with the raptors fourteen minutes left, and he refused to go in. Okay. That it happens. Oh because expectations. There are no expectations less you play with that guy. Now. Let's talk about Ben Simmons, shall we? Yeah. We just trashed again. Try one line at age twenty two he made the all-star..

So when you can come a hill Monday, if we in that is all look at Tom Brady with three officer lime with this going wrong with going role and a coach that doesn't even want him there. And he's did I know about about that they already know by the way, the coach did not want him there. He will. Should be Jimmy and Jimmy's you would have actually gotten hurt. Also with New England who knows what would have happened. But that's what he wanted to have. Tom Brady's even fighting against his own coat. Always nice climbing. He's finding an uphill battle everywhere. The coaches lost his fastball coaching the no he has not stopped saying that I just gave you all the yards and all the third down conversions and three games over twenty. You're spraying really three games. I take one two three four five games over just this last half a year span. Would you try to do is take my what I did in high school? You try to take what all the knowledge that I've accumulated and those four flailing glare as that. I got to high school you try to hold me accountable for those done so much more than skip. I know, but if you had the four failing grades right at the end of your senior year, then that's what's happened. You would have lost your fastball. I have failed grade that the, but I had enough credit that I could go ahead and get out of here. Okay. But you're still you're young man. Just giving the young man got another ten years in front of him. I don't disagree with that..
