Hey, you don't learn when you talk, you listen so. Look at you wise match. Write that down somewhere and put it on instagram. Somewhere motivational quotes. Miss Jack Handy quotes my favorite Jack Handy. Jack Handy from SNL No. It would be like Like, a hallmark kind of quote, it takes a big man to cry, but it takes an even bigger man to laugh at that man whose crime. Stuff like that. You pull those up there. Nothing has been better for those kind of things in the Internet. Thing now yeah, you see people fucking one right one line like fuck a great bit now I can't do because it's fucking. Boast this. They're fucking great I, I like I screen shot him, and then I sent him to my brother. I I sent one today to him. I think. There was one I saw it said My wife's gone into lay a called the hospital. My wife's going into Labor. Which I do. Is this her first child? No, this is her husband. I love Dumb Shit like that. You're a throwback I'm old school. That's Jeff Ross type response to Jeff last night. How's he doing? He's doing good. He's still alive, Jaffe said. In suspended animation, everybody, the only thing that's been connecting me to everybody is doing this like being able to sit down with guys. Shoot the shit with them other than last weekend with Tony and Moses. When we went to Houston that felt like the old days again, it was crazy. You did the Houston. I was there. It's my first time ever there. Really. Yeah, stages really high. It's great. Yeah, it's a great club. I like it I like it a lot. What was capacity, Fifty, seventy five? They were up to seventy five. Yeah, yeah, seventy five percent. I think that's what they were doing in. My is pretty packed. Yeah! It looked full so crisis on the road right and he's doing drive in movie. Theaters saw that and he's got. Hey, seuss with him. Yes, and inbetween he did the driving with Miss Pat, as well hilarious. Yeah, alumnus, Pat Right in between clean. He did some clubs and did a club in Oklahoma it was supposed to be one hundred twenty seats socially distance. They stuff three hundred and forty three people in that area, and they lied to them about the number, so hey, sues went around counting heads Yup and he counted three hundred and forty three people. That count is grossly inaccurate. I have my assistant count. The club to just I'm like Eddie. Go count every fucking. See, Click. Shortchanged by there because I'm already getting changed. The money's bad now. The yeah, the money's last charging less, but in their birth situation Burr was worried about catching cove. He's like look man. "When he was at the peak of his championship skills, he was unstoppable man when he be Jon Fitch when he smashed Bj Penn those days, and then he came back after retirement and be biffing. Beeping at eighty-five and put them to sleep with the route. Naked Choke actually was better. He actually looked better after four years out so long time away to. It's not like a month off. Yeah, he's Mount Rushmore for sure. Mighty mouse has to be Mount Rushmore. People, forgot you forgot, but you watch those mighty mouse fights back when mighty mouse pizza hut over the first time when he beat I mean fuck in the Ray Bork one when he threw into the air and caught him in an arm bar on the way down. Remember that God damned. When he was in his peak. Was something really special? Never friend of mine? WHO TRAINS MIGHTY MOUSE Indian, kid who fights? Saint Lion busy fighting for yeah, yeah, one of these amazing them. Grew Darshan. There, they have some really tough fighters over there and mighty mouse is still stomping him. Yeah! I'm hearing that one might Try and start up by by the fall out here in really in America. Good luck tonight. It doesn't make sense. You might as well stick to Singapore Singapore. They're huge. Are they allowed to do shows right now? I, don't know, but I think the rest of the world's opening up, but they're not letting Americans in and that crazy. Well, it makes sense. What did we do? How do we fuck this up? It's funny because you know. America was the one that will stop everybody from coming in. Hey wait there for a second. What do you think it is? Is it that so many Americans are overweight? Is that the protests? It's the. It's that blind. Entitlement as a Canadian I can tell you this. There seems to be like a blind entitlement with a lot of Americans, were they? I'm American. I can do whatever I want. I'm like. Yeah, you can, but can you just listened to a little bit of reason for a minute? You. Know here. Here's why this is happening. And like now you're invading my rights and I'm like I that we're all frustrated with it. know I'm with you on this, but. For the betterment of the rest of the country. If you could just wait a little bit. which just wish there was an awesome treatment? So got it. It was like my friend has thirty seven I don't want to say his name because I don't think he's talked about it yet, but he when he got it, he was a little bummed out at first and then two days later. He's like this ain't shit three days later. He was like no symptoms at all. Yeah I listen I did the test on Monday. Had Your guy kind of my house We send somebody and I was negative finger one the blood, one and the nose swab. Negative on all of them, but I think I. had it dude in January and I had a brief one. But Dude if you had a that FDA approved antibodies test that comes as md US would catch it I think that a lot of people thought they had it because there's the regular flu and then his regular colds. Does the. Can it's true human, and then a lot of people I think a lot of the the testing results are getting marked wrong. You think so. Yeah, it's. It's listen at a friend. Pass away during this whole thing from He died of cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. And because they did a covert test, they said it's cove related. Yeah, that's rough. They come on. That's fucking bullshit. Because I, spoke to the doctor less than twenty four hours before he passed away in, the doctor said he's got three to six months. told me that there's quite a few cases of people that were literally at death's door from cardiopulmonary disease, and they got covert died, and they call covert death in the in. He was upset about it. He was like I understand because a lot of these hospitals are privately funded. Privately owned, and that's something I didn't even consider I always thought hospital was like some sort of state. Run thing. I never thought about hospitals. Did you now see? I'm from again from Canada with government. Run Free Yeah. Well, they have. They have to make money you know. And basically this guy was saying look. The doctors are doing their best, and it's not that they want to be deceptive, and it's not that they're doing anyway, but he goes, but hospitals are like any other business. There's a bottom line. They have to make money. And if there's an incentive for them to call something, a Cova death, and they receive extra funds especially time like this where they're really hurting financially it makes sense but. You know it really highlights. Y state funded medical. You know some sort of A. If we had like the way Canada hasn't Canada's not perfect. No I mean it's listen. It's not the best, but it's pretty pretty. Have to pay deficient for what you needed to be. You need something extra done. Yeah, you might have. You might be better off paying a little extra. Get something done, but as far as like regular shit and you know you got a cold go to the doctor. You break your arm. You go to the doctor, yeah well. I have friends that have real problems like shoulder problems, knee problems. They need surgery and they've come to America. Get Oh, yeah, no, that's that's the way it works. And same with my dad when he had cancer, he the treatment he wanted or needed was in Philadelphia. Yeah so it's like privately-funded stuff stuff that cost more money where the doctors get. They have an incentive to become excellent right because they can make more money. Specializing. But then the Canadian government still picked up the TAB for it. Oh really yeah, because it was a a service that wasn't available in Canada. That's we yeah, so they were like Iraq. We got it. Yeah, that's a divisive thing over here man, and that's weird that it's divisive to because it's like it literally benefits everybody you know why it's divisive because the people that are healthy at the time or Pay, yes, the people that are healthy at the time. They're not looking at it long term, but you would think that these politicians would before because they're all oldest shit. Yeah, but they have money. It's turned that they've been corrupt and taking money on the take. The like I'm I'm a Bernie Sanders Fan, and that's one of things that I really like about what Bernie Sanders was saying you know? Bernie Sanders was saying that it should be a fundamental right as an American citizen to have healthcare should be fundamental rights. Rights as a human being anywhere in the world. Yes, the way I look at it I mean people have all these little weird arguments about it, but my the way I looked at it was like. Aren't we a community so community, shouldn't we? If we're going to take care of things, we should take care of fire department. Show Fire Department. Tax Dollars pay for. That should have police department tax dollars pay for that. What about healthcare education? All those things should be. There should be all those things to taking care of. I don't again. I've only been here fourteen years, so I'm learning about the education system now in America. We saw trauma to pair. We thought obamacare was going to cover it. That's what a lot of people thought when you know. When Obama was talking about it, and they were trying to get the affordable care. Act passed and. Get everything we thought Oh. This is going to be. We're going to be. We're going to be cool, but it seems like. You know. What is it nine years later? It's like. Twelve years later it. How many years is it now? He's been gone started though he started eight year term, but wasn't in the middle of or at the beginning of second term that WANNA started or the end of his first term somewhere around there, so it's just say seven years old yet. It's still. Not much difference a much different Jamie. Do you know? Apart from that means it easier to get healthcare. Is it better? It was some people got taken away from them already because trump, yeah, that motherfucker, and then, and then there was also.

"Like it's like I don't even know in three years like what the comedy platforms are going to be. Is it going to be? It was on Netflix Oars. Like someone else GonNa. I don't even I like to think of myself as a pioneer and I've got an idea for the next one you do. I got an idea for where it's going to go in and I'm working on it from now. Okay yeah is it like a different completely. New Platform signed a new platform. But it's a new way of doing it okay. Yeah so and it's it cuts out something. I don't want to say too much. You don't have to think much but just but just from someone who you said sort of got your start. Because in the earliest days of Youtube that was a whole new thing of realizing. Oh these things that we're putting onto the Internet are not regional. This is the Earth's Internet. Yeah I mean I didn't even put it on there. Someone else did. Yeah 'cause I'm still completely computer illiterate to this day. But that's why when you say you right on your computer. I'm like how do you do that? Like justice like I literally just be sending. I'd have to send emails to somebody in order to figure out how to send something and save it. I like that would be like. Hey Chris and I would just ignore this email. This is just me reading my act and then I would type and I would have to send it to you just so I don't lose it in the twenty two years that I've been doing standup the it's only been the last few that I've done computers before it was just I had notebooks yet. Then it just started like the Cross referencing. And where was that flipping pages and then having to bring a notebook around being terrified to lose it? You know I just I finally just turned it over to digital and I just got used to it. It's not what I would prefer to do but it just as does it feel like you're not as connected to it when you're doing it through the computer. No because I I. My brain has just found a way to connect with it in a way that that I am you relearn how to yeah well and I also I like I create file history and so like you know I'll type out. You know like jokes that I want to do for the Thursday night and a show and then on the Friday all go through and make edits and change stuff and then I'll save that as that file for that date so like I have a file history of that really kind of walks through the evolution so I don. I don't even know how to do that. I literally didn't like when I used to write out my act very early in my career. I would write it out literally if I said I would right And I was like wow I. I wish I really had those notes though. I would love to find those notes. Well it's sort of the guys like I need to write stuff down to remember them but there are the Chapelle world who are just like. I've never written anything down. Yeah it just all and I've seen him over a week. I was at the punchline once and he was also there and so they just he just kept headlining a Ni- open for him for a series of shows like ten years ago and I watched him start with this kind of Blob of a conversation. That was still funny but then over the next three days. Just Watch get whittled into this fucking sculpture of peace. And he never wrote any of it down he just remembered it and that in those reductive like three hour sets and somehow that's just how his brain works and I was so an audit because mine doesn't always like I would have to wait. What did I say? Oh I wrote it down okay. I have my assistant watching me and be like. Hey the way you did it tonight was the way to do it. You know which is helpful because in a way the idiot will text me while I'm on stay. You know what I mean like like my phone's right there and I keep it face down like this but I just sometimes flip it over to check the time and I'll see my agent my My sister techs go of something wrong. And I'm like sorry guys. I'm fucking idiot while I'm on stage. You text me but an airplane mode. Don't get smarter could say that. Was that a line. I was way out. I don't need I don't need your logical solution to dump problems so now that the special is out are you? Did you stop doing all those jokes? Oh I kinda stopped doing them. The second recorded it. Yeah well I still had some dates left so I kept that but I was like I was prepared to let it go right away and so are you already like way into the next one by now. You must be because listen. I started January. Second right with getting with going up nothing and now what are we at almost February February mid February and I think I've got about twenty minutes. Now that's great and as far as I'm a pretty good fucking amount of time to have in a month so do you is is the idea. What's your turnaround like is it. I have to be ready by June. Holy Shit. Yeah you're already shooting another special. No no no. I'm ready to tour. Oh Gotcha Gotcha Gotcha Gotcha. But what's your. What's the turnaround for due respect? If you've done nine specials you must do a special about every year to know I. I've been doing them every three. Oh Wow yeah I I'm like I don't see the purpose of doing them. Every two years the material it doesn't it doesn't benefit the material. Because you have to live with it for a long time to yeah real right. Yeah I always think back to like my best specials were like when I had a little bit more time And so let's go back. There's no rush is enough specials out there for to fill the space. In the meantime probably better specials even is your plan to. Do you think you'll be a guy that does specials until like your last breath? I don't think I want to do anymore specials but I'm going to do a tenth and then you gotTa do. Yeah we'll we'll hit the nice even ten mark and then then we'll just see what happens. I mean but I always say these things. And then there'll be an eleventh and there'll be a fucking twelve Bob Newhart told me a long time ago. That what we have is a gift and that we have to share the gift it would be completely selfish of us to not share this gift with the world and he said there's no there's due date on this you share it until the until you die. I loved his the way that the first time that I had heard like a legend many many many many years ago I wrote an article for wired and I talked to a bunch of different COMEDIANS. Like him and Stephen Right. This is like before podcasts. Seen before I did a podcast so maybe even fifteen years ago and just sort of talking to them about their process and to hear this legendary comic that he would because he does these long. Act Out pieces. So I would I would build in a bailout point several bailout points and if I could get to that bailout point. People were still engaged. I would go to the next bailout but if I started to lose people then I would just bail out so essentially would write like five or six endings for every bid in heading on how in the audience was. He could just get out at the perfect moment. Wow I don't write that way. But he's a really brilliant mind and knows how to economize words perfectly. Yeah so Ten years ago I was lucky enough for him to choose me out of everybody. He chose me to be the representative for the younger generation of comics and be there for him at his induction for the fifty fifty years in film and Television and I was like so taken aback and and honored and then so we had this private dinner after an invited me. And I'm sitting at a table Peter. Ska Lara fetus. Gloria I know Peter. Yes and Fred Willard and I'm like wow. This is Don rickles is there. Don was one of my idols and So bob gets up to tell a story and there's this woman there I won't say who she was she was the wife of a very well to do. Tv producing and she was drunk and kind of obnoxious. So Bob's about he's like I WANNA thank everybody. I WanNa tell you a quick story. And then she's like this is going to be funny. Bob Bob just going to be a funny story. Oh this is going to be funny and then everyone's like fun and and then Bob just goes. Why don't we all find out together and I was like that's fucking perfect must have killed it destroyed and I'm like it was perfect like he. He maybe he took a flaw and made it like. That's what I love about comedy like spinning gold out of the flaws like magic out of the flaws I I would have been like shut. Fuck up yeah. But he needed that moment to happen. In order to engage the audience and hold them in have like this amazing experience. If it hadn't happened you wouldn't remember that. So in a way that sort of the the beauty part about about being able to be in the moment like that those imperfect moments become like. Oh Yeah how we Save Them. Is Jim Andy? I'm opening for you. Some on this weekend in love Jay. He's such a sweet guy. He's usually funny he's a he's a good guy he's a good kid. Yeah he really is worked hard. He has an amendment the comedy store and he did at midnight and he had an amazing first time. He was on the show. He had an amazing for show was really great. I'm glad I'm glad during with him is a good kid. Is there anything else you want to promote? While you're here Deported deported now. That's that's that's special. Now that's a special. Thank you watch it on Amazon. Prime video town near you soon in grand rapids coming up in grand rapids is a fun combination. Gilda radner comedy. Yeah Yeah Yeah Gilda's laugh fest interest rate doing that on March eighth or something. Oh you'll love it. I mean confirm the date. It is a huge eight. That is a good. Thank you enough for being always looking to see you and one of those. It's one of my favorite things about the always going to Montreal. It's like the shows are fun but it's just it's the hang one hotel with the round bar a high it just like it's God it's like a great and then you want to talk to people but then you get distracted so quick. Yeah Am L. Hey sorry hey man and then everybody off on each other and but nobody takes a personal no. No you didn't come back. No not at all not at all. It's Nice it's fun to be around everybody. This is meltdown comex. I don't know if you've ever performed at meltdown Noah. That was your thing. It was well. Joe Camel did their thing there and then we built like a sweet program the other nights of the week but they started it like they started doing comedy there on Wednesday nights and so it was just like A. Why isn't there comedy here? Seven nights a week. That was nerd melt. That was yes. Yes yes yes. That's gone now right. Yeah meltdown got he. He got rid of it. The guest on it closed. It's not it's something to now. He's gas off. Oh did it. We started with the pilots right and we landed with upon my favorite rap big Pun. Guys come on I d scanning complete enjoy overeat..

"And I've done Montreal a bunch and I've had this experience and I've seen other. Comedians had this experience. There's just enough of a cultural difference that it's for a new comic. It can be very jarring to have like an audience of Quebec Qua- and you're doing like these American jokes that are real talkie and don't have the same references or even the same cultural language and know it's like you can have a rough set and then a juggler gets up and fucking destroys down so I always wanted an interesting place for new American comedians. Because the Canadian comic. Because it's because it's its own bubble and it's a beautiful city in. It's a wonderful culture. But it really is. Its own bubble and if you're an outsider. You're an outsider. The first time I did it was ninety six. Yeah and that was the first year they did this. This show called comedy night in Canada and I was. You had to fly myself in and put myself up but I was like. It's just a blast. I'm GONNA do it. Yes and then. They put me on these comedy night in Canada shows and they I was the only non white person on these shows and they put me on. I both nights and I was so fucking mad. I was like. Are You fucking kidding me? Do you can't just bury me into the middle of show or the end like you. GotTa throw me on. Let's get rid of this one. Oh Man I took it so personally. You know what I mean. I was like because ingrowing Emma Kennedy. I dealt with a lot of racism so it was like doing this shit again. They're fucking with me again right. Did you think that's what was happening? I don't even think they noticed they were just like I don't know put them on their because my name you're not GonNa you're not gonNA know by name. You can see Russel Peters wherever that is put that put that guy on first right right right and so was Russell. Peters Brown was there. Was there an expectation? About the type of comedy. The audience thought you were going to do no. I don't know what it was. I I mean I I did okay. Yeah I by no means that great and Mike Mike McDonald was hosting and he goes. Hey Kid backstage and I go. I'm really nervous so You know pretty nervous. And then he goes. What do you want me to say I go? I know several Toronto. I guess I don't know them because I got really nervous. I'm like maybe it's better that maybe had said you were from Toronto. Maybe the crowd would've turned on you. Yeah but you know I I was just I if you're not in this business. I don't know if you came around this. You're the only one in your family in this business I am. It's the same. You don't know what to do right. You don't know how to act you don't know how to. I mean I'm still meandering. My way through this fucking business sure but but ultimately I feel like the thing that we arrive at is when you can peel back all the layers then just be the most comfortable version of you. That's when the magic happens but fuck. That's really hard to get to that point. And like you got like the people like Brad Pitt. Nobody in his family's in the in the business but you know he's beautiful right. You know what I mean like. He's it's you know. And they got a lot of these people that are just really pretty people so being a beautiful human being physically is like being famous entire life. People treat you differently so what so because I feel like there's a lot of different identities at play because you have the cultural background that like your ancestry but then you're Canadian cultural background but then also like a connection to America versus like also performing in Montreal. And having that so where do you do do? Did you eventually just sort of feel like you know what I mean. I'm all of these things. Yeah and none of these things. That's that's where I'm at now and like I think that's why Canada so loyal to me because I always number one. I always same Canadian And number two. I always it's at a point. Now where when? I'm when I go to events in L. or at Hollywood party type. Yeah we've looked. Hey Russell Long. In town forego fourteen years. Now you fucked an. How long have I been here a long time? I feel like one of the angriest kind of threads from a joke that that I saw I was. I was doing Falun a few years ago and I mentioned that I was going to go to to just for laughs and I said I'm going to Montreal or as I call it practice France and I just thought like goes as stupid throwaway joke and people are really mad mad over any the comments and the threat. I posted it somewhere and they were like America sucks. I'm not saying anyone talks. I was just say I'm sorry. I wasn't truly say Canada. Where we're America's hat was. That sounds familiar with cameras. Where America's hat but I do find comedy in Canada to be a wonderful experience and it's Toronto Montreal Vancouver Adamant There's so many great places to perform there and I find the crowds to be engaged and warm and welcoming. Because you're Mr them now. Oh is that really? Yeah try coming up in that okay. It's a bummer. Buddy was it while you get good comics candidate because the audiences are difficult. Yeah they do they do not WANNA laugh. Yeah Yeah Yeah I don't I literally have to make me fucking laugh boy so it is a little bit of a battle. Yeah they're like make me laugh and they pride themselves on being miserable in that respect. But isn't that kind of a gift in a way when you're coming up because if you can figure out how to navigate that well that's what makes the great comics because we know how to how to cut through that bullshit and then once once you crack the code. You don't get that anymore from them right. You know what I mean once once once you figure out. I know I understand that. That's what you're trying to do but here's what I'm going to do for that right right right and And then it goes away. Yeah when a new comic. That's what you're dealing with you coming up. You'll like mcmath boy and so with the first time you went to Montreal. What happened did it lead to lead to nothing okay? It led to me being in debt for the flight. The hotel me thinking you know and it was ninety six when they were given out deals. Let's let's say right now is like a deal and I do I had. Oh my God. I said the dumbest things to people trying to be clever. I no clue. Do you think that the sort of like the the blessing and the curse of the comedian is the overactive kind of like like? If we didn't over analyze everything. Do you think we would sort of lose the comedy power? We would lose something because it turns on you to turns on yourself. You know what it is. It's we're we're still the same kid that was like hey you're not allowed to say that. Okay Yeah and you're like but why not? I'M GONNA say the march nothing's going to happen right and then in my head. I was like that's probably say that and I'm like fuck made you say that. But do you feel that that power of like do you get more control over it as you get older where you well? Yeah I mean again. You go through these. You're you're a snake you're always shouting your skin. Yeah so yeah you eventually figured out you listen. We don't really fully. Nobody really fully figures out this entertainment business. We're on our deathbed and like shit can have ten more years. Just give me the light yet. Just give me five more minutes. Oh my God yes. You're literally running the light that you're supposed to walk. They're getting the light. I was going to close with this. This didn't go the way I planned. So when you said you know you went through this period of depression start period. You didn't know what you were going to say which is so funny. Because you know you had like eight other specials. I imagine that proved that. Yeah I know I keep finding stuff to say and you also know that you can riff. What how much? How much did you have when you went on stage at that point? Start with zero zero and you literally start with zero and it's because I don't really know what direction I'm going in. I don't know what I WANNA talk about until I got up there and you think that's your body trying to process and purge whatever sort of style. No that was my brain going thinking too much. Then you get on You. Just do it right. It's like Oh my God. I can't swim in the pool okay. True I'm treading. I'm good I'm good. Sorry guys panic as much as I- riff on stage. I've never I've had those shows right here. You know what I was going to go up with nothing and then just kind of see if I can feel myself out and usually the terrorists know like I need a base of material to at least be able to go back to when when the riffing stuff isn't working but just to go up on stage with nothing and just kind of see what pans out like that is not I it trips me out and scares me and and honestly it freaks out but I. I don't think I want to like when you say how you sit down and you write your laptop. I'm like I envy that ability to focus like that And that's why if you have kids throw your laptop out the window. 'cause 'cause they will it's not gonNA work. Yeah and what was for you? What was different about this special? Did it feel different? Was It really? I think I'm really like because I just think of us. As these like blocks of marble that we're just constantly chiseling and chiseling and chiseling and chiseling away at until it becomes a very detailed thing. I liked this new special But I've seen a lot of people who hated online. Oh I've seen people hate it or love it. I haven't seen anybody on ads all right so it was that good then because it's not because if something's polarizing is that better than it just like people doing man Yeah. I mean it's better than right in an I mean ultimately but obviously the the haters are louder than the shirt and the people that enjoy it sure. The manager usually hears about the complaints not the compliments and how has just because as we are emerging all these different platforms Amazon specials on versus..

"My favorite and then everyone's like that's that's exactly honestly that's exactly why didn't open mouth because I know what a fucking idiot I am and that's exactly what I would have done? You should come back and do end up is fine. You're so good at it. The Laugh Factory Eddie Murphy gotta go. Yeah Yeah I had a great story to. Tell anybody. I didn't tell them that either. Yes sometimes the it's like you're gonNA kick yourself either way driving home. It's either going to be because you said something stupid or because you didn't get involved and you didn't say anything at all. Yeah so maybe it's like how do you Kinda just let it go the COO? The cool part of this whole thing other than everything Was like tiffany. Took me there? But then tiffany got so tired. She fell asleep on his couch. And I was like. Who Don't want to wake up Ktichen. You took me home right and I and it's like three forty five in the morning now and I'm like I don't WanNa be like to get your address for an Uber and my head of all these scenarios like am. I going to sleep over at any Murphy's House. Oh my God Jimmy Pajamas. I could borrow and I'm like I'm not gonNA live here for the rest of my life didn't start. Your brain goes mental. Because you guarantee you Eddie Murphy is like Oh. I have pajamas like he seems like the kind of guy that would just give you if you needed pajamas. He'd have a setup Pajama. I feel like. He's Kinda smile and be like. Hey Man I'll see you later. Thank Goodness Arsenio was there and Arsenio goes all right. Y'All I'm Outta go. Hey would you get what you are you going to? Ours he goes. I'm going down to the valley. Go perfect can I get a ride to venture? Oh great in the corner like Beverly Glen Adventure. I'll take a new at the over from there. And then so he takes me. We Start Driving. Go here writer. Pullover goes I can leave you on the fucking corner Beverly Glen Venture like four in the morning. We're GONNA I'M GONNA Woodland Hills I go. That's perfect I'll go there and then I'm a mile away from there. Yeah because I'll just take you home. That's nice and I was like. Wow So tiffany took me and Arsenio Birmingham. There's no better way to book and that story. This is what's great and it's sort of like what I was talking about. Brian Regan to comics are always comics. And they're always GonNa want to talk about comedy understand it and they're all even with like Eddie. Murphy's thing like I duNNo. I only got five minutes. They're always sort of looking over the fence like oh I don't. I don't know if I'm I don't know if I should do that so I'll let you like there's still that sense of never feeling like you're never feel completely never feel complete. You never feel comfortable. You always feel like you're missing something or you don't have enough of something. And and it's it's a bummer. But it's also charming at the same time it also is what keeps US moving. Yeah and you know I think I went through a little melancholy phase maybe to the latter part of last year and I started really considering leaving L. A. I was like I'm GONNA leave. Fuck this place I hate it go. I'M GONNA move to fucking Texas or something. Yeah I think I've literally started looking online as like look in Nashville and look what was it. What do you think I don't know you just go through your getting your head you get in your head and then you're like I don't know fuck this place. Nobody cares. Nobody's GonNa notice if I leave you know. But you which is funny because it if you look at sort of the empirical data you have this really great touring business. People do know who you are. They do come out to your shows. It is a really hard thing to to convince people to put on pants and leave their house and park their cars and sit down and pay a lot of money and that's a very hard and focus. That is a really hard thing. It is hard to sell tickets. You know what it was. But I hadn't gotten back out on the road yet or we're going on my new AC okay and I think I was so scared of not being able to come up with anything got it and I was so away from it for a couple of months. Yeah that I I've just got in my own head and now I literally am in a place where it's like fuck it. I don't give a shit anymore right. I don't want it I don't care about it. I just I'm loving. I'm loving doing. Stand up my thirty first year. It's this is what I'm GonNa do for the rest of my life. It's it's fine and it's exactly what I want to be doing. And now I I I guess when you change your inward energy your outward energy changes to so of course it then everything that I thought. Was You know? The problem is not the problem and everybody turns out they like. Hey Man I'm like okay. It is okay guys. It's funny how much you're you're convinced of a certain reality. Yeah this is totally it and and then you kind of start finding reasons without realizing it to build that case to strengthen that case. Oh Yeah Yeah you can and then I started realizing that I wasn't even taking my own advice and I was like you know house. Tell people when you live. There's two roads there's negative road and the positive road. Why would you take the fucking negative road right and I started going down the negative road and I go? What's a hard to get off of? It is hard to get off and you can. You can build either like once you start down either path. You're going to find reasons to start laying roots down absolutely and it is hard to get out of because you kind of have to backtrack a little bit to figure out how to get to the other one. But yeah and I'm one of those people that doesn't matter what it is in life. I don't like going back negative distance right. This is the watering forward too bad. We're not going back. Hey should we ask the governor Metroplex? I'm not asking anybody for nothing. Why it just doesn't. It's not the way things are going. I'm a bitch but it's important because I think in most people's lives whatever they've convinced theirselves themselves about the reality. A percent at least percentage if their perception of that were altered would change the kind of. And you're right. It changes your outward energy because you can tell when people have inward energy and you can tell when people are comfortable and you can tell when people are trying too hard which is also afraid of. Am I going to be out there trying to harm? I GONNA look desperate. I didn't know what the fuck I was thinking. Yeah and my. My whole team was worried about me because they were like something's going on with that guy and I'm like I don't know what to Fox going me alone but it's just normally thing that everyone everyone goes through. I think I you know I guess it lets. You know that you're human. It's the it's the life equivalent of you. Talk to someone at a party you leave. You're driving home you replay the highlights from the party. Go Oh my God. I made this one. I made this one joke to someone. And they just split up with someone and they're going to be upset because they thought I was making fun of relate in all my God they hate me. Oh my God that's why tree I'm saying then you're dead the next time you see him talking. I'm so sorry about that thing. I said the last and that was like what are you talking about? Like you've built this whole case against yourself that Chris Rock. I thought I said something really stupid to him and then I thought I said some really dumb to his girlfriend and then I was like fuck. He's he hates my guts now. Yeah and then I was like I called Tony. His brother Mike Tony you a texture brother and tell them I apologize and you know the remotely In in in in inappropriate that night or whatever. And it's like with you say to him I go. I don't do because my brother won't remember. Shit that you said to him. I go you series it goes. I'm I promise you won't remember. And then I called like his cousins Sharon small shrug and you know. He's got a note and I can. Jeff Roscoe Jeff can you imagine to him pal and I'm like no you're not nobody's GonNa say yes but then but then the other thing is that you might make a thing out of it by trying to I really over thought it and I saw Chris and everything was normal totally normal and fine. Okay but that's just a good lesson for like the stories that we tell ourselves are not like whatever store you tell yourself might be true because you make it true but it doesn't necessarily make it an objective reality right like when. I did your game show. Yes yes I was sure. You'd remember that. Can I tell you what happened with did so? Many episodes of that I know I know I know but in my head is like there's no way he won't remember that. I won I. I've run into people that I was like. It's more actors not comedians but actors like Oh my God you know you should have been doing some time and they go. Yeah I did it and I had no because you live so much in your short term. Memory that your brain just scoops out and you start over the next day You know with six hundred episodes like I've started to go back and watch some of the Hashtag Games like Oh these were really fun and I had literally zero. Meme like it's like I'm watching someone else's show and a whole new thing. Yeah it's like when I mean like a celebrity that I may have interviewed added talk show back years ago and I and I'm like hey how are you remember me and I'm like wow and I'm like fuck that person. They think they're cool. I never I don't that never bothers me because I I do understand like especially. When they're in that moment there could have been like one of five things they did that day. Should I know now? Yeah but if you take it real time you're the again that was that's a different Russell again. Like I was over a hypersensitive when you're when you're and to me it's a sign of weakness like you're not a week. Guy Russell or the gag hypersensitive. Well not only not only the hypersensitive thing but I think it's very difficult for. It's very difficult for someone who works in the creative arts were. There's kind of a relatively non linear reward system. Mike how do we know? We're doing a good job so we set up all these things that kind of feed our ego because we think oh well. That's being fed. That must mean that. I'm doing if people remember me that people come out to my shows if I invited to certain parties if I get asked to do certain things that is a sign but what we really just want to hear is like your enough your complete. You're doing okay. Which by the way we could just tell her. We just accept with our president. We we look around. We should be able to look around us and go. Oh yeah we're doing good. Yeah we're doing good here. Yeah I didn't I didn't have to get a job I hate. Where'd you grow up? What primarily? Well I've been la since eighty eight. But like I grew up in Memphis and I lived in Denver for a while and Florida or Tennessee. Guy I yes I was born in Kentucky but I always say I'm from Tennessee because I spent considerable chunk of my childhood. I do like Tennessee. Yea I've never been to memphis but this is a cool town. Nashville is great. I love everyone loves Nashville. Memphis is cool. It but there's comedy hasn't really like embrace memphis the way someone either has English. Hey there. Hey y'all doing my stepmom scratches or Mississippi and she adds syllables two words. That don't have extra syllables. There's just like a drawl down there where everyone just Soda Tau Slack the down there. But it's so I do consider myself southern but I've been in La for thirty. I would never have guessed in now. No it doesn't I don't feel I mean I feel a connection to it by memories. I have memories. Where where did you? Grow UP TORONTO. You grew up in Toronto. Toronto is a great place for comedy. Too especially I started eighty nine so it was right as the boom was ending. Yeah so that was the best time to start because nobody cared about comedy. Nobody was paying attention to it. Make all the fucking mistakes you want in the world and nobody's looking at you. Yeah Yeah I always found that. I think it was really interesting. That you know Montreal's Jeff L. Was like that was like A. That was such a badge of honor as a new comic to Montreal..

"He's just such a comic's comic and a guy that also doesn't rely on he doesn't do talk show sets he doesn't have to he just he tours. The people know they're going to see a great show and they come back and they bring friends the next time they see him. That's the way to do it. And that's what I love about like the purest stand up comedians. In a way they're sort of impervious to this whole like social media culture. You've got to put your stuff and it's like no. They don't do it but it's more out of like because I'm bored. I hate doing social media. I hate doing the instagram. And if people are weird I yeah I I don't like it man. It's just people are going to know where you are. GonNa find me what I'm going to tell you everything. Get Out of here. Yeah and we're taking away thinking from people. Well not only that but I think the idea that social media really drives engagement in the real world. I think we're I think. Hopefully we have learned like it doesn't it doesn't matter how much you live tweet. Us show. It doesn't matter how many times you say on social media you're going to be a city. A tiny percentage of people be like. Oh I saw on twitter that you usually you talk about one hundred times you do a town and then a day later like when you come into Denver. I was just there. I didn't know. Yeah that's my. That's exactly a man huge fan. When you come in you. Fuck you fucking idiot. I was just there no big Fan. Dick really aggressive with the fame. And you'll get a little jerk. How dare you not share you anyway? Thanks for coming your next time. We'll see anyway month. Yeah so do you want to do email list at all anything we don't do. I don't even I hide out in the green room after the shows to what what fascinates me is that the fact that and this I think is antithetical to sort of our modern digital culture. Is that terrestrial? Radio does work. It does like I find when I go into a market. If there's a handful of tickets left and I do a morning radio show that people listen to it. Moves that last Trumka tickets like there's still real power in traditional media maybe for you maybe for you know. I don't know I I don't like doing it because I feel like those guys don't know who I like. Most of the time my my head is nobody knows who I am. That's how I that's how my world is. Maybe it's a healthy place to come from though maybe because in my head it's like nobody knows who you are. You going to walk into these stations. They're gonNA stare at you and then they're going to treat you like a jerk and then they're gonNA they're gonna ask you the fucking most annoying question. You can ask a comic so we'll could people expect from your show comedy. Show what do you? What do you hope to expect a lot of a lot of tears and sadness? I'm pioneering stand up tragedy and so a lot of sad story. Everyone goes home but most people statistics. Laugh at me because there are some shows that you go on and they want you to. They WANNA say forbids. And it's like I don't really. I'm not trying to do funny. You should ask. I'm just trying to like we talk. We could see what was it should ask. It was that other Byron our show. Oh out kicking it. No that's wasn't it wasn't kicking at one. There was another one before that. Oh the OH comics. Comics unleashed unleashed. Is that it. Yeah so I I hear you were just in Columbus Ohio interesting. I was as a matter of fact you know what I noticed about. Gas Stations like somehow take a turn but I guess it's just part of the lazy to me. Yeah and I'm Lazy Lazy and I'm going to be lazy. We're just GONNA sit here staring at each other but you but you can riff and not. Everyone is a river in that sort of hard to explain. Sometimes we just talk about whatever and we'll just make fun because we're in the moment and we're having a conversation. They don't know how to do that. They go oh we have. We should have a talking point. Oh No it doesn't need to. You don't need that you don't need that I can tell you from the other side of it though. Having I worked on radio in the ninety s and it is you do have to fill a lot of time. Not everyone can do what you do in a room and so they just. It's sort of like how you used to go on talk shows even if you were doing a couch segment. It was almost it was to screw. It was to you like this. And then you say this. Oh my God. This is like an acting exercise. Now this isn't like you know what bothers me about that because I feel like that all turn turn to that in the nineties because when you watch old carson it's amazing dude like guys just show up and like beyond the show and they would just talk like a podcast they would just like Johnny made it fun and like you say they were genuinely enjoy each other. You Watch Dean Martin and those guys and when they would hang out on the roads or the Dean Martin show that late night show would just drop in and hang out and it was just fun. It was cool there. I've been down some rabbit holes from Carson rabbit holes and it's been really fascinating to watch like Richard Pryor or Carlin on yet. They weren't funding. They weren't funny like they wouldn't really do bits like every once in a while they would get a laugh from the crowd but it was just it was just like it was fucking conversation just like talking and at a certain point and probably the eighties that shifted. And they're like Oh let's everyone's gotTa do bits and jokes and sketches. Let's make this better right. I I've gone down the Dick Cavite rabbit hole early. Oh yeah there's a ton of old to Cavite stuff popping up on Youtube. He was really sort of the FI I think he was one of the godfathers of like the podcasting format where he would just talk to someone. I don't understand him though because I never find him funny. He's not trying to be funny but he is but he he really bad it was like but he he was just trying to keep the ball in the air and then step out of the way he would sort of you know like poke. Bette. Davis gathered to tell the story and then he would back out of the way and then occasionally like you and Groucho and then like they would start to tell the story than he would back out of the way. I think he was just trying to keep the ball in the air. It's uncovered to watch them with when he would interview. Black people really. Yeah it it's because you know the thing is he. He was like cool with them and and he was friends with them and he wasn't racist by any means. That's not why I'm going with this. But it was that over it. 'cause 'cause the time it was in the eighties he would try to overly project at their friends that might have been in the sixties and the seventies no. I watched the show and the yeah. He was going for a while. Oh wow he was going for a while ago earlier. Yeah I saw with Eddie Murphy on there. Oh and then he would try to make like a black joke really because no because it's like as if your friends you can do that. Oh he was trying to establish what he was trying to make it. Look like yeah and it would just fall flat. Because he's Dick Cabinet. Yeah and it's like it's like your like your dad or your granddad and you don't you don't need to try to do. Yeah it's it's you should watch it. It's kind of I will. It's it's I'll watch the Murphy. As they as they say the kids nowadays it was cringe worthy. Well one of the things that I've so enjoyed about Eddie. Murphy's kind of like re emergence into the public consciousness is how much joy he seems to have like he could. He doesn't shy away at all from like he seems totally willing to like. T- tells these great stories about when he first became like one of the biggest celebrities in the world. He's not afraid to talk about stuff and he seems to talk about it with like a real glee Alger and the fact that he is so embraces it so much delights me and makes it so fun to watch him. Yeah I mean look I got to last year. I got to go to this thing. I wasn't invited but I got so tiffany. Haddish text me. I text her. A picture of I tiffany a picture of my mom and her last year. And then tiffany replied. I said my mom loves because Oh my God I loved your mom she goes. Guess what I go watch. Because I'm on my way to Eddie's house and I was like Oh my murphy. Gosh and she's like yeah I go. Wow I said that's so cool. I only met him for a second once. Your because you wanna come and I was like. Are you serious? She was yeah. I'll come scoop you if you WANNA go. Oh my God and I'm like I was with my girlfriend and she was pregnant at the time. I'm like where at dinner and I'm like. Hey Babe can I go? We'll go thank God because I would hate for you to be a single mom. So tiffany pick me up and we go to Eddie. Murphy's House and we walk in the House and I'm in complete I'm numb with like I can't believe having because he was like you know I got Eddie Murphy source of nineteen eighty six You know So we get to his house. We go in the basement and as you walk downstairs the first person I see Jamie Foxx And I'm like Jose James. What's up man? I'm like Hey Jamie. And then they turn around. And he's Okay. Russell thanks coming. I'm like Eddie Murphy knows my name has been and moving on and then you'll Brennan's there right and then I hear behind me. Is this what you comedians always do you guys just hang out and I turn around? And it's q tip from tribe called quest only what's up tip because they know all these guys and then. I look at the bar and I see Sasha Baron Cohen standing behind the bar and then I'm like. Is this the fucking movie by the way? This sounds like an old bugs. Bunny sketch where he walks into yet. Like every remarkable body was there so Sasha Baron Cohen's behind the bar aisle officials sitting at the bar and then I see bill hader than Jimmy Kimmel. Dentist Patent Oswald then Pignataro than I see. Allie Wong I see Jeff Ross and then I hear behind me how Shatman rows operators and I turn around and Chapelle walking down the stairs and I'm like what the fuck if I walked into by the way the sounds like the greatest open mic. Like did it just like you? This show of everyone getting up and doing ten minutes. Yeah and then and then I'm standing there and I see his black to with blonde hair coming us. There's goes at Cisco and it was like Knows Chris. Rock for some reason he had his hair dyed blonde really. Yeah and I'm like what what is this. Where am I what world in my in right now? Everyone else must have had the same surreal experience. I mean Kimmel talked about it one night a matter of fact. Kimmel talked about it when Eddie Murphy was on a show. Yeah and he was like talking about. Everybody was every failed to mention me which really bothers me this day. That's how fucking memorable I am to him and what happened did show so then. I'm just like I want to get a drink. And then it was like I got to kill and then I go. What are we doing? I put this down I go. I don't WANNA be no. I WANNA remember a part of this night of course so I'm I'm not saying a word to anybody because I'm just literally like Gobsmack. I'm like I can't believe what I'm in right now. Right and then I'm standing in a doorway like this and and it's Eddie Chris Rock Jamie Foxx beside me Neal Brennan and we're standing there talking about comedy. Oh my God and they're like so when you're gonNA come back and and and he's like I don't know I got like five minutes bands. You GotTa really and you guys really work hard at it and and then and I'm like I'm literally not saying a word and I'm like I can't believe it's not like you know sometimes when you're standing when people are talking and you can get the vibe that somebody's thinking. Was this guy doing here right. You know what I mean. Do you think that's a real vibrant but that wasn't happening? Oh it wasn't. That wasn't the VIBE I was like. That's why state I was like so cool. I wasn't finding those situations like you. Because you know your brain and it's an overthinking kind of thing where you're like say something cool say something cool and then there's a gap and then you say something like comedies..

"That's so great to get out of here and I'm like my kids aren't doing anything. Spectacular right like my nine year olds just a regular nine year olds right. She's not an asshole she's not you know what I mean. She's not like wacky. She's just quiet just did. Yeah my son's ten months old. What's HE GONNA do? Not Now. Should himself today guys. Hey guys congratulations. Then he aid and then he showed himself again. Yeah you might shoot himself tomorrow. Yeah he wakes up and grabs. My nose isn't that funny. Yeah no it's horrible because Greg. Yeah so I find when I go into it nowadays. I'm like yeah I don't WanNa do that anyway. I don't WanNa talk about my kids anymore. It's not that I'm trying to protect them. Just like you're boring so your your career. Is You have this very sort of coveted position. I think of of also having an amazing international business which is a very tough thing to get. I think for at for American comics. Because we're so I think. A lot of American comics underestimate their value international really. Yeah I think a lot of a lot of you guys don't realize how popular you are in other countries. Maybe I certainly don't tooting my own horn which I I don't like hung by myself. But I have always been told in all these other countries that I was their first introduction to stand up. Oh how like? They didn't know what it was until they saw me and then they discovered other people. Was it just for laughs? As that was that was that was. It would have been youtube in two thousand five when it started off. God somebody put my whole act on there and then it just went around the world. Yeah and that's what made the international base really strong and like you go to Mongolia or you go to Malaysia. Or you go to India and you find out. What was your introduction? Russell Peterson yeah some countries. They didn't know what it was called is called the what that guy did. Yeah and basically if you it's not like you have to get like you have to go to India and get a billion people to come out. It's just like a point one. You're good yeah exactly exactly exactly and you still. You still can have a healthy touring business. So do you when you go to different countries do you tour the countries themselves. Or do you kind of go to like one hub city and then like everyone comes out too there you go to the majors. No and then and then as it starts to spread Stockholm originally And then you would end up going to Momo the next times it goes Taco Man Momo and then you're Norway's right there so let's go over to Norway and then you start spreading out just just a just a natural spread. It is interesting because I forget like I have some. I have a couple of friends who are Norwegian and one of them just happens to be obsessed with stand up comedy like knows love Stephen Wright Hedberg and all like and he said look you know in Norway. We got a lot of western. We got a lot of American stuff and he said well what's comedy like in Norway and he goes. Well we're we're we're coming around to it like there are comedians now but it seems like if you had the time the focus which you have have done of going around the country. There's probably a lot of underserviced standup countries where you could like. It's even just showing up even if they didn't know who I'm GonNa go see this because it's a thing I haven't really seen four and then they I imagine they're very loyalty because like you said that the first person you saw they're great to me. I have no complaints about it at all. Do you have to does your set change. No not necessarily now. I mean you might. It's like doing the road here. You talk about whatever you saw in their town right now you write one joke for them right and then you do. Your Act is it. Pretty much is is comedy pretty much a common denominator language in the sense that like every culture likes having stuff pointed out about it like do they take differently in each word as a pretty much. The same basically. Here's the thing is that everybody does ultimately we all do the exact same things? It doesn't matter what country you're from and what color you are or whether you're male or female it doesn't matter. We all do the exact same thing but were so narcissistic. We think we're the only ones doing right and someone points out you're like Oh my God. Yeah and I'm like. Oh you know Indian people are cheap and then and then like Russians and be like cheap. And then you know you got you got the Scottish go now where Jimmy and then every. Everybody thinks they're this right. And then my dad I would say my dad Blah Blah Blah and they go my dad my dad and then it's like yeah exactly what I'm trying to tell you. We all the exact same thing but there's nothing unique about us right. I mean I remember sort of coming up in I guess. What would it was Chubby? Chris then that was Chubby. Oh you remember Chubby Chris. That's so nice. It's so weird to see like skinny will. Now it's been like fifteen years but it's still. It's why I had a name for that guy. Called Him Peter Hardwick like he was the drought pater but it was. It's funny that you remember that guy but I but I often you know like coming up with kind of the moral tentative comedy scene where we'd get really snobby about club comedy and so oh. I know all about it. I look back now and I feel like I'm sort of annoyed with myself over because you get you can say like look. There's a comic on stage and he's fucking talking about airplane food and it's like yeah but the people that came out to that show don't think about comedy one hundred percent of the time and maybe that's the first time someone pointed that out to them. So maybe maybe you might consider it like a topic. That's been tread on before. But maybe this person has a take on that you have overcoming that snobbery to realize like hey like maybe if we're not so stuck up about stuff we could reach people that otherwise wouldn't would not understand our whole like super super ironic form of comedy that is for just people who are comedy fanatic. We're in the Uber sub-genre We're living UBER. Sub sub genre world. Now you know I always liken it to music and you can. I like how you know in the early nineteen hundreds or we listen to one style of music exactly and you like music. I sure do yet. Here's some and then you go to the forties and then like the big band stuff started. Ooh were in the big band and rock and roll started. And that's where it started to divide. Ou like rock and roll. We're into big band jazz. And then rock and roll came in and then rock and roll splintered into heavy Metal Glam rock soft rock class. You know yeah and then disco started and then then rap and then hip hop and hip hop started sub genres. Yeah everything started to splinter and everybody started to find a niche. And that's what comedy comedy comedy from the seventies onwards it was like Wacky goofy then. Oats Guy Swears. Oh hold on now. It's getting darker. Hold on a second. What's that all about and black comedy white comedy? What's this and right? Stoner comedy and then it just started to splinter again overture prior you can just tell stories about your life in honest and authentic way easy. It doesn't have to be like Super Junky. Does you have Steve Martin. It can be Steve. Martin was like extra goofy wacky. Yeah and it was hilarious to me with the he was my guy. Grind Love Steve. Martin I love Steve. Martin I love Cheech and Chong Yup I remember listening to Somebody brought the forty five to school of sister. Mary Elephant Remember that's catch. You know it was like. That's how Brilliant Teaching Jong was that. They made a sketch that you had to listen to. There was no film or video of sister. Mary Elephant Yeah and it was a schedule as a two minute and thirty seconds. Sketch on a forty five. Wow and we would listen to it in class. I remember crying literally crying. Couldn't breathe laughing listening to this thing and that was also a now. We're getting into old guy talk but that was a period of time where you would listen to the same bit or album over and over and over now you know we've become such a consumer culture that it's like you watch or listen to it. Like there was a time I saw already. Yeah that's where like specials you know used to be really special because you would listen to it over and over again. Now it's sort of like a marker of the stand up that you've done for the past year to and you're about to start over and it definitely helps and you have a special on Amazon but I don't know how special but people in General People Watch it once and they're just like more and more and more you know like there's so many more or they're like man more or Matt those check boxes you my friends that my friend pointed out that goes like yeah in the early days of film you could just film a horse walking up stare staircase because no one had done that before. That was like mind-blowing. Yeah look at that horse. Oh my God. That's all moving horse up estate. How'd they do that? And then I'm seeing on the wall and there's new horse on that wall and then it was like then it had to evolve than the horse and they needed special effects. The horse had to be walking through space and then they'd had to be all these different. You're right the sub genres and so do you think it all kind of re coalesce at some point or are we so far. Down The tributaries of sub-genre culture that there's like no going back into the venture tie itself back together. You think so it has to. You can't stray. You can't say that far from from from the mother right now and not come back to it because eventually it's going to. It's like stretching something it's GonNa get so thin that it doesn't matter anymore right and it's got to come back to to where it has some substance again. Yeah I mean it blows my mind to think that on any given night like in the seventies that forty million people would watch which you know. The population was lower back then so that was like a real considerable chunk of this country. We're all watching the tonight show and they were watching you know if a comedian put out a thing everyone thought and now you can still have a big thing and somehow not everyone knows what it is. I look I I've had. This is my ninth special. I haven't done one talk show. I haven't done one I I don't. I don't know if I was refused. It doesn't it doesn't matter that or it really doesn't. I'm like what difference does it make. Now Yeah I think there's two there's two shows that definitely madder to do and that'd be that could that that that would be that act like Carson type of thing and the seventy s and it'd be Howard Stern right or maybe Joe Rogan experience right. Those are the two that that people will actually pay attention to right right right right and the good news is friends with Joe Ben uses. I've never done stern. I never have either. No no for sure you would have done. No No. I've never done either but I think that's why when all the COMEDIANS. You should really do. Rogan'S PODCAST I don't know if he's done ours really has he's impressed because he hasn't do anybody's. This was a few a few years ago but it. I think it's part of the reason. Why all the COMEDIANS gravitated toward podcast because we realize while there's not people aren't doing comedy on TV much anymore. Me When I did eventually get offered to like Corden. Yeah they're like they want you to do stand up ago. I haven't been doing stand up thirty one years. I'm not auditioning on TV again. Right Right Right. Just nothing personal. It's just like I tell stories I'd like to what's the four minute young every piece of this set kind of relies on the context of the other pieces of that. It's like here's a piece of the Mona Lisa. Which isn't I need to see the home visit. The hand is at the I. Amount. Yeah you need this whole thing. I completely agree with you. It's sort of hard to figure out it's great for new comics. Yes because they're doing seven minutes sets in the club to line. Joe Comics. Yeah you can just lift out to two or three lines of jokes and Super Fast High Hijo per minute ratio. Yeah it's it it works. It's set up for a very specific type of comic but the good news is that it. You don't need to do it so you just keep tour. Yeah I mean I don't care either way anymore. Why it's not GonNa make a difference not gonNa Make Dent. I was I was just in Columbus and Brian Regan first of stop bragging. Sorry I don't mean to bring out my highfalutin words like Columbus Ohio but I will be there soon. It's a great town at the punchline. Was that the no the funny bone. I'll be at the funny bone and it's super high end like Grove Style Mall. There's like all these comments. Yes I was. I was kind of giving the crutcher. Is that the one where the hotels directly across. Yeah update that mall or something. Mall is insane. There's like a Louis Vuitton store coach store burberry and I was asking the crowd. Like what do you guys have a Louis Vuitton store? Your median house prices. One hundred sixty five thousand dollars and of course they laugh and then I would meet people afterwards. And they're like we like to spend money in Columbus Ohio. They've just going through a period of financial boom boom like consumerism. Because they're everything else is so cheap. Yeah I guess so. Cheap houses cheap cars but regan came by after his show was the same night and he came by afterwards. We were talking and by the way Reagan one of the nicest human beings on the planet and I love him because he just he doesn't get to hang out with comics at his shows because he's isolated and writers that he does so he just loves to cause. I saw like a week or two after my show he was hanging out with Jackie. Maria Bamford at their show at night..

So I if you're a fan of the wall it is coming back on Sunday nights. I think like seven. Pm On march fifteenth for Awhile. And if you're not a fan of the wall that's fine too thorough lot of entertainment choices up there. I don't know how we keep up with everything quite honestly there's just too much entertainment but there's a lot in any case. Let's talk about you. We're GONNA talk about Cameron Giles. Who has emailed events that I D ten T dot com? Who said I made a thing? It is the pilot episode of Turbo City Guidon Animated Series chronicling the adventures of the baddest band on the planet the mad gear aesthetically. The series takes its cues from the eight and sixteen bit Video Games. The artists pixelated the nation. Simple and the music is chip. A fide show itself is inspired by this video games Saturday morning cartoons film noir and the warriors also has been described as streets of rage. Meets strong bad now. The pilot is outs were launching a kickstarter to make a full season. You can find it all at mad gear band dot Com. Thank you Cameron. Thank you for making a thing. This episode is Russell Peters stand up comedian Russell. Peters who I don't think actually is ever been on the podcast before he was on that midnight. Think he's actually ever been on the podcast. This might be his premiere episode. He's promoting his new Amazon Phantom special deported which as I just said is on Amazon but I said it really fast I kind of barreled through it so I'm just going to say it again. It is on Amazon Russell. Peters thank you so much for being on this episode of the identity podcast which starts right now. Took no babies yet so funny. Because I'll I'll I've been and I imagine you too because this is sort of what happens. Is Comedians get older? They just sort of talk about stuff in their life. I've started talking about the potential of having kids and my show and it's always so funny. How divided something. It's the best of other people like Dow Dow ads. Don't you know so the people that are the best you know that misery loves company? I know what he's always like a weird club that people who are trying to recruit you for like we do it like a come on. Don't do it Colty Club. I Dunno I think Oh back from. That's the thing it's not like there's no backtracking like a bad haircut grow out. It's like the tire spikes go up like cup campaign that's it. It children are tire spikes that's the takeaway today. That's why they say you're so tired. We did I start with a pun. That listen you're not gonNA get. I'm not going to turn my nose up at a pun and I'm a big Fan I have. I am like puns. I feel like everyone loves them. Even though some people are like Oh you know. They're puns but everyone loves palm. Yeah I'm big fan so you have. Two kids loved the word play. I excited to talk to you because you do something. That is very difficult to do. Which is you're able to shoot riffing in your shows right which is which is. I've always thought like. Oh it's really I tried to do a segment of my last special and it was like a an extra. I kind of went into the crowd but I always find that it works in a live show because everyone's they're shooting. Comedy creates a layer of separation so the audience at home isn't caught up in the energy. So why don't you know like I'm not there so I would love to sort of talk about how you're able to make that work and how you're able to weave it in mainly because it's something that I wish I could see? I love talking to the crowd. So do I because I get bored like after you. You know when you're when especially when you go to shoot a special You've got to figure out to that for two years or something. Yeah and now. You're just deathly fucking bored of the act and you're like maybe I can if I talked to somebody. It'll make me. WanNa breathe new life into the material than Ryan to do so but that's also the way I write is by talking to the crowd. You seem like a very structured intelligent guy. I read. Well that is. You've definitely been tricked. I I am by intelligent. I don't mean you're smart I over think things. I'm was my last two specials. I very much wrote the way that you do. And a lot of it had to do with just my schedule being so crazed I would sort of get an idea. And then just kind of riff with the crowd and see how it unfolds. Talk to people and something that will come out and then it will become a part of the act this special. I really sit down and morning at breakfast and I just right for like an hour right. How can I play with that? That's the part. I don't understand like you open your laptop or do you use pen and paper. I opened my laptop. I use a couple of different programs couple different APPS that I use and I just tweak you know like I listened to sets and I go. That was fat. I can cut that out like what's different joke on this house. What's a different angle on this? So it's just it's just tweaking. Every day just incrementally and trying a different shows which also keeps it fresh every time right. I used to think in the nineties I would record my sets and then I would listen to them once only once. So here's the thing I used to deejay. Yeah I still do. I start teaching and eighty-five and I found through de Jiang that if you make a mistake in a mixed tape When I'd be making mix tapes if there was a mistake like I dropped the record in at the wrong time or the the mix went off a little bit and if I listened to it more than twice in my brain goes. That's where it's GonNa go. That's where it sounds so I took that and then instituted into comedy and I would listen to my set once and I've made my notes back then I'm like okay. I didn't like that I didn't like that and then I would not listen to. That's ever again and I would record the next set and try to fix it and then listen to that set once and that's how I would get moving forward because then you don't end up making the same mistake no but sometimes sometimes especially with like. Dj reviewed dropped wreck the wrong time. There's always there's that prince thing of like if you make a mistake do it again because then it seems intentional. You know like Yeah Sometimes. The happy mistakes. And that's what I love about ripping with people. Is that when things go sideways? Kind of some of the magic happens. Oh yes you can't I don't believe like I can't write something verbatim and recite a script. I can I can ride. Beats like right? The joke beats and then however it comes out is how it comes out right. I feel like you have to be in the relationship with the audience for that too. You'RE NOT MARRIED. Ula Words not at all right that it comes out different every and also I would imagine for you too. If people saw two of your shows back to back what they would see are two different shows. Even though some of the material is the same they would have two different experiences based on your interaction with the crowd right. And that's how I like to do it. Yeah and I think that's why. After thirty one years I still have a nice thriving. Live business. Yeah because they come on there like we saw him last time he was fantastic and then we saw him again and it was completely different. Yeah I've had people come out three nights in a row weekend because they were there Friday Thursday and they're like those so good ones in again. Friday was a different show again. Yeah different show again all right and I'm like yeah when I don't know that I'm doing that. I just you just doing it. It's just natural natural being you but you have the comfort level on stage that no matter how far off the map you go. You know you're going to be able to pull it back if you need. Y'All just ask a leading question. Yeah do you ever find? Sometimes it's difficult to follow your written material like you've had such a stellar riff with the audience and they're so involved and all the sudden you talk about somebody that doesn't involve them like no talk about us again. Yeah that was more had that I've had I've had myself not able to follow myself. Yes yes yes yes yes. It's the best and worst feeling at the same time. Yeah but you can always dive back into the crowd you need to and then I go. I would actually address it as soon as it happens to like that was written material which is clearly not as good as you guys. Yeah of course. Yeah but that you know that type of comedy and what you're talking about is just like being in the purest sense of the moment in the purest present possible which I think is sort of what makes it fun and and I don't know if it's a whole separate skill set to recite your set like a script and I have respect for the guys that do and are able to have it sound fresh every single time but I'm like you I have to trick myself jazz. I guess so. You know what Song you're starting to play and eventually I'm in this key and I'll probably end up on this and have to start with the song and I'll end with the song but in the middle it's going to get a little convoluted. Yeah do you ever go on stage and just say like with like? How Murad are your topics when you go on stage and you don't know how it's GonNa work out you're like oh I was GonNa talk about my kids and see what happens. Yeah had it happen a lot? I find whenever we get to my kids. It gets it just falls flat nowadays. Does it excellent like I get bored of it because I think about it from the perspective of when I didn't have kids and I would hear comic talk about the kids are like I don't care about your kid? Is it just like showing someone your pictures of your kids?.

"Oh Yeah five hundred bucks this wedding. I have to say one thing that I learned very quickly is that Indians. Do not at all believe in the concept concept of immediate family. After the wedding I was suddenly getting calls from like cousin. Ravi Mama and all these people. I don't remember that like Hey. I'm in town. Let's go out. Oh Yeah Yeah if you if you give them your number and they don't play the game of of comedy and busy. I'm telling you like but but we are related now. No no not really. Well you're one of those are you. Yeah you got you got to say no you gotta give a real yeah literally my little wight Texas family quintupled in a weekend. Oh yeah how your parents feel about all that. They're cool they're cool yeah they feel about it there there. You know it's interesting because the resistance you know not that I'm aware of and probably not though anyone knows they're they're very cool very open minded and all that and Yeah yeah I mean like an eye. Parents were cool with it by an upwardly. Mobile Indian family What do you mean by that? Upper middle class. Yeah Yeah I mean. She went to Harvard. Yeah my family's very working blue collar working class So like I've always Related better to white trash. Almost you know what I mean like when I go by like a Redneck town. Yeah although I know. They're not looking for me. I understand them. I'm like I know your mindset. Yeah because I grew up financially similar to you interested I like that same bleak. Hope no hope. There was no glimmer of hope. There was no future and had I not gotten lucky with what I do now. I would possibly really be like you. Yeah so I guess you can kind of relate to what's going on out there in middle America these days late to it. I understand it but I don't understand their our fascination with the guy who's promising the golden carrot that's not giving rotten Garrett right you're not understanding this bait and switch having in front of you. Yeah that's the thing that drives me crazy because I'm like if someone played me for a fool and I realized it I would be furious. I'd be pissed off at that guy wouldn't be just buying in for more. You would be but I I think so but okay. Let's let's take that right. Now look at it. This way. You'd be furious. Played for a fool but now I'm the guy standing in front of you're going. Hi didn't I tell you so. Now you're mad because you don't want want to spite me right. Right rather than concede defeat you'd rather wallow in loss. Yeah Yeah Yeah. There's a I think there. What are they called it a stunning CR- effect? Where if you're confronted with facts that go against your beliefs you actually dig your heels and more gas? So it's I'm an atheist so I get it. Yeah so when I talked to religious people like I. I'm not gonNA convince you. Have you always been an atheist. You while you're born in atheist okay And somebody teaches you to follow these guidelines according to the book that they like Yeah Whatever whatever book it is that they've decided this is the answer to problems uh-huh and then they brainwashed into believing it? Yeah and then you don't question it but I've always been a guy that questioned everything. Since since I was a child that really annoys those people. Oh Oh yeah. We're even as a kid I was like why can't ask questions But I just have questions and I think that's also where we're at with this next generation new want us to just just accept a lot of things that they're saying and I'm not opposed to accepting these things but I have questions Why can I ask a question in an I mean you want to be non binary? That's fine I have a question question and and the reason advocates because I want to understand you and the more we understand each other the more we understand each other and I mean yeah definitely the easier life becomes because you don't have these lingering questions and you don't have this way of looking at them weird because you you have a question in your in your head and your eyes are looking at them but they could see if there's a question mark in your eyes. Yeah that's one of the reasons I respect. Judaism not Jewish. But I respect Judy Ism because they kind of encouraged that they encourage debate. And ask you questions. There's a whole will kind of history and lineage thing doesn't make it real it just makes it makes it more accessible not any more a real than the other. Yeah yeah that's true. You actually do a bit in your show where you talk about how you kind of understand how white people have their grievances and are scared out of their minds ends because they see what's happening. I mean there is the Browning of America going on. You can't stop that reality but some people just don't want to face that reality. Yeah it's a weird time we're living in you know and I feel bad for white people. 'cause you know it because I I I see it in the comments when Nimble say things to and it's not like on my page it's like Amazon Post and add and then I'll see the comments and I'm like that's what you think without even watching me how that's what you think already like a grain another non white guy talking about how bad white people are. I'm like actually I'm not so maybe we should watch the special. Yeah definitely it's not it's I I like to be The book where you look at what this book's about gotten an open it up. It's definitely to pop up book by the way before we wrap up here. I want to congratulate you on your son I guess did you have him before. Or after the discussion. Now he's okay. He was Two months old when I shot the a special really yeah. He's two months old now he's nine months he's doing that special in that little sleep. Well you know I. I laughed I and was on tour left behind when I'm working I'm working. Dad's got to pay the bills. Yeah Yeah my wife and I are actually expecting our first in. I think think three weeks right now. Well anyone says forget about sleep. You'll never sleep again and it's Kinda getting annoying at this point the real now. Yeah what are you having a girl. Do you have a name for Charlotte that's great name. Yeah it was my wife. wh-what made her name Charlotte as she began She just really liked the name. Apparently it's it's like the number nine most popular name in America and then pushed back on that. It's making a comeback. Yeah references I was. I was thinking of like sex in the city. I'm like thinking named after Charlotte from sex and the city. That's within your very Hetero. I guess so Here's what's going to happen you're you don't notice. Listen kids not keeping you up because the kids being a dick. Of course you know what I mean. And it's it's it's a baby to people. I when when I had my daughter my daughter's nine now but when I had my daughter going to change your diaper loves you change daybreak. Oh Yeah I'm going to change a kid's not shading itself because it's being an asshole asshole drafted. It doesn't know anybody it's just. Why are you ruining my life yet? It's a human being a human so none of these bad things that they're warning. Yeah about our our even. They're not even worthwhile to pay attention. Okay Good Yeah Oh yeah you may you may get a night or two where you have some messed up sleep. But it's not going to be a consistent thing it's just not going to work out a system with. You're GONNA Listen Babe. I need to wake up early tomorrow. And he do on duty with baby tonight.
