"Because I even said to you before the show, Chris, he must have name image and likeness deals up the you know what? And you then pointed out to me because I didn't see this on Instagram, popping up. He's thanking his sponsors. He has 8. He has multiple sponsors. 8 of them. He's like a NASCAR driver. Thank you to my sponsors, says the amateur who's now blowing away records. As an amateur ever been the last time an amateur finished top ten after the first round was 2005, and I can't imagine anybody's ever finished the second round where he might finish. And I saw a stat where he is threatening something that Ken venturi did in the 50s. So with how he's playing. Right. So you have to sit here, what do you call it? The U.S. non professional? You know, you got to take the a away. He's not an amateur is like he's just a college kid. Here's the other thing. And who's got no business deals. He's not a professional because he's not being paid, right? Then these guys have to turn down a check. Yes. So if he wins, that's like a $3 million purse. He has to turn down. Which is nuts because he's not turning anything down and put it up on one more time that Instagram. What's he turning out in college? He's got a sponsored by ping, okay? He's sponsored by a golf cart. He's sponsored by a bank. Clothing. Come on now, and he's got to turn down a check. We got to kind of change the way we're looking at things these days. I don't know if there's a rule that's been changed on that, but traditionally, if you're an amateur and you make the cut and win prize money, you do not collect that. But he's not turning down checks at Texas a.m. and rightfully so. It's name image and legless. Let's go. Yeah. But he still has to turn down a check from Augusta national. Because bagger Vance said so. Is that why? It's a 21st century. A tradition truly unlike any other being started by Sam Bennett, which is thanking your 8 sponsors as you threaten the leaderboard at the masters. Scottie Sheffield won 2.7 million last year. He's going to turn down part of that money because he's got an a next to his name. That's not the Instagram posting of an amateur. I'll tell you that. That's a pro. But good for him. Great story. He's a hundred to one to win right now, which is, seems like good value. Well, it would be if Brooks Koepka wasn't so flammable right now. Yeah. Yeah, koepka looks back to his dominant self from a few years ago. Jason Kelsey is in our green room and we're about to bring him out for our number three. We've got Mikey D, DJ, Mikey D, you've got your got the weather report? Yeah, just started raining there. No, I don't need it. Yeah, Mike pace yourself. Pace yourself. Pace yourself. How does it feel for you to watch Xander Bogart to another uniform? How's that been for you the first week? You're not going to get used to it for a long time. Rich, I miss him so much. And he's been playing terrific. Unbelievable. To start the season three home runs, he's batting 360. It's like, come on, man. And while we're on the subject of pitch clock, Machado, we didn't discuss this week. First guy to be ejected by arguing a pitch clock violation, which if it is a called strike, technically you're not allowed to argue balls and strikes. That's an unintended consequence, I think, unless he said the magic word. Well, Machado is, you know, he plays. He did take a sweet ass time. I kind of like him. So, okay, I'll take Bogart's and Machado. And we'll check on our work on Monday. Let's do it. Although there are some things we can't check until the end of the season. "Which is kind of crazy. Yeah, but it's every time you shave the half hour off games. I understand that, but that's not for me. I'm not sitting here thinking, I have not sat at all in my 53 year old lifetime thinking games are too long. I have not thought about that. I have had a problem with the action I've had a problem with guys in play third base and short right field like it's a beer softball league and catching screaming line drives that would normally be a one hop base hit. I love the fact that there's no shift. I am loving this. It's gonna open the game left handed hitters. I love the fact that baseball's promotional ad about the shift rule being changed involved Joey Votto. It's perfect. Left hand hitters are going to love this. We're going to see more people on base. We're going to see more stolen bases, right? Yeah, we've seen a lot already. I like it. I like the fact that it doesn't matter. Anything else, if they did just the shift alone. That would be enough. But they've done a bunch of other things. The shift being gone is fantastic. And I don't care what pace of play is because I'm not one of those people they're trying to reach for that anyway. The pitch clock though, I will just revisit again. 9th inning, they got to turn it off. They got to turn it off. Once again, the world baseball classic battle between ohtani and trout look it up every pitch would have been a pitch clock violation. And I love the drama being built and nothing's better than a 9th inning situation in a game like that. Once the playoffs hit and you're going to start seeing pace of play go a little bit too fast, that's the way I'm looking at it right now. I may be wrong because I'm not noticing the pitch clock right now. What else, Chris? All right, let's focus on a couple of the Apple TV plus games. They got a double header starting in about an hour rangers cubs. Yes. Good pitching match up there. Who's more likely to notch more strikeouts today, Nathan ivaldi or Marcus. I'll take stroman because I don't want him to clap back at me on Twitter. That's a good point. That's fair. Native Aldi, I don't even know if he has a Twitter account. I'm going to take Strowman because he's a clap backer. He's like a clapper backer. He's a clapper backer or a back clapper. I don't like it. Either way. I'm not going to put myself in the stroman line of fire. Both guys have been sharp this year. Won their first outing, Strowman didn't give up Iran, but Strowman had a great open-source strikeouts for the 8 for Strowman and their opening. So I'll take stroman on that. And the night game, the night cap, Christopher. The night game is braves Padres possible World Series preview. They put an awesome game yesterday, braves wanted to walk off. More likely to combine for more total bases. Xander bogarts are made in Machado or Ronald Acuna and Matt Olson. Is this a

Rich, you should just live stream that on your Instagram. Please, come on. I'm not going to do that because I want to be president. He wants to be president plus rich curses a lot at the beginning. And I'll just tell you how it goes. I want to be at least give us a be honest with you. Of course. Going to these games at the little league. It's so beautiful. It really is. Just watching these kids compete and the sun was setting and the valley on I mean, I'm getting all mushy here. Wednesday night, beautiful nights of Saturday. It's going to be a Saturday night sunset and sun on the mound, pitching, and hopefully it does well. Boom. And he starts raking and starts hitting. But anyway, the reason why I bring it up is he texts me, so this is what he's doing on his final Friday of spring break. And again, any parent out there on a spring break with their kid knows right now, the two words for spring break that are operational 24/7 is now what? Now what? Just you wait, pal. Now what? So he wrote because our fantasy league are fantasy baseball league. We drafted after opening day. So our league doesn't start for real till Monday. Oh, all right. So we're monitoring the team and how it's doing. I've already made so many moves in my life. We drafted Gregory Soto thing and he's the closer in Philadelphia. And he came in the 7th inning and gaming against the Yankee and he's been he hasn't been lights out. So he texts me, dad. We should drop Soto. Either get the braves closer or the nationals closer, they're both hot. So I ask you, do we take mason Thompson or Jesse Chavez? Well, the braves closer is racial Iglesias who's currently on. That's what I'm saying. He comes back. Okay. So do we take? So the guys right now are just filling in for April. So we just stay put. Do I sex my son? It's a marathon, not a sprint, right? He's treating it like it's his basketball. His football league. See fantasy baseball. I drafted a bunch of guys who were on the injured list because I know Carlos verdean and Tony council when they come back. Right. When a lot of games get a lot of strikeouts. Right. You're playing the long game for baseball. It's a 6 month season. I think he's putting our roster on the pitch clock right now. He's doing right now. I did pick up TJ's boyfriend, let's go Alvarez. I had a spot for DH. Everybody just got called up to get called up. Okay. The future is here. So just tell him to stay put. Stay put. I'd say tell him to just Ari LAX. Guys here say stay put. Focus on your game tomorrow. Tell me visualize. Tell them to get some long toss in today. And get that arm loose. Okay. Okay. Done. Now I can focus as I should. As I will on Saturday, I put my phone away. Hey, folks, guess what? It is time.

"Hi everyone, and thank you for tuning in to the four 178th episode of The Hollywood Reporter's awards chatter podcast. I'm the host Scott feinberg. And my guest today is one of the most remarkable actresses of our time or for that matter any other. You may have previously heard her on this podcast in 2020 during the thick of COVID lockdown, which forced us to record our conversation via Zoom. I was therefore extra thrilled to have the opportunity last week to sit down with her in person in front of a sold out crowd of more than 2000 people at Santa Barbara's historic Arlington theater as part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival celebration of her as its outstanding performer of the year. I'm talking, of course, about the greatest thing to come out of Australia since Kuala bears, Kate Blanchett. Let's go now to audio of my introduction of and conversation with her there. I'm especially thrilled and honored to be here tonight because we get to celebrate one of the most remarkable actresses of our or any time. She is a woman who is being fed tonight with the outstanding performer of the year award for 2022 for her performance in tar, having already won best actress accolades for this performance from the New York LA and London film critics, national society of film critics, and critics choice association, making her the only person who has ever won all 5 of those, and she's done it twice. But as will be reminded tonight, she could have received this performer of the year award in virtually any of the 26 years in which she's been on the big screen and has garnered along the way aid acting Oscar nominations, two of which have resulted in Oscars and a third of which might next month. Now having interviewed Kate a few times over the years, I know that she tends to minimize individual accomplishments like those that I've just cited. So I'm going to cite a statistic that shows just how much of a team player she is as well. With the best picture Oscar nomination that was bestowed last month upon tart, the all time record for any actress already held by Kate for most films starred in that have been nominated for the best picture Oscar, increased from 9 to ten. No woman ever has had more. And again, I think it's not a coincidence that she's been at the center of that many standout films. She clearly and visibly makes everyone around her and the film she's in better. And I know Todd field is in agreement about that. But don't take my word for any of this, I'm going to read a few other quotes here that I think are relevant. The New York Times, once asserted about Kate, quote, like Meryl Streep, the actress she most resembles, she is a natural chameleon close quote. Meryl Streep herself described Kate as, quote, an actress that is not only gifted and talented, but is above all a brave actress. I really admire her enormously, close quote. Russell Crowe called her the most spectacular creature that ever walked the planet. We've all been called her the best actor of her generation. Donald Sutherland went with the best actor in the world. Brad Pitt called her mesmerizing exquisite and otherworldly George Clooney emphasized that she is the best actor working today, not actress, actor, and the late Time Magazine critic Richard Corliss once wrote, quote, years from now when cinephiles are asked to name the movie is golden age, they'll say it was when Cate Blanchett was in them close quote. Ladies and gentlemen, would you please join me in welcoming back to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival,

"So I just want to, since you brought it up, I wanted to ask, I wanted to ask just a little bit, because when I first read this, I was thinking, and this was probably the influence of just having watched Greyhound. I was thinking, I'm looking at I'm looking at a movie with Tom Hanks here. But the more I thought about it, I mean, this is really the character really reminds me more of Bogart, right? And not even really Rick Blaine Bogart, but more key Largo, Bogart. So Frank McLeod and just the fabulous key Largo, which is really just still one of my favorite movies. Oh, really? Yeah. G Robinson is the bad guy. Yeah, the one with that. And. So I am wondering. Now I know you thought about your daughter as maybe the face of the female character. Did you have in mind as you were writing it? Someone who was the face of the captain or of the submarine commander. Well, yes, unfortunately, none of them are available. Heath Ledger would have been great a young Harrison Ford would have been, well, he maybe not so much Harrison for. I wanted someone who was quite a submarine captain before, right? He's played. Or Russell Crowe, a young Russell Crowe. A tough guy who's very empathetic. And you see him, the darkness in their eyes, and lately I've been watching the show like the rest of America. Yellowstone. And one of the actors is Luke Grimes. He plays the son, the only living son of John dutton, and he's got that empathetic tough guy, even though he's not huge, but he would be nice for Miriam Natalie Portman was someone else I thought of. You know, I'm not sure who else, because it's got to be someone who's small but tough, but capable of humor, those are hard things for actors to all bring to the table, but I would love to see that happen. Sarah Michelle Gellar is active again. And I mean, she might feel some of those roles. Yeah. Josh Brolin would be another one. Actually, there's another name that comes to mind. He's a little bit older now, but he has, he has that character.

"The Bloomberg business app and at Bloomberg quick take this is Bloomberg radio What's important here is how the investor risk appetite has been Earnings will start to matter more because that's going to be the key to driving markets higher There is a risk to growth especially in the second half of the year But this is how to rate a Titan in a clearly I think it's a bumpy ride This is Bloomberg surveillance with Tom Keene Jonathan farrow and Lisa Abramovich What did Russell Crowe say Lisa are you not entertained Can you do that accent I bet you Tom can I'm sure he can Do it another time two K from New York City Good morning good morning to you all with Tom keen and Lisa Brandt Sam Jonathan Ferro futures down 7 on the S&P negative a little more than a tenth of 1% Tom Keane this morning it's quiet This month anything bad Anything Biden you wonder what February Russell crowell celebrating ash party winning the Australia open no doubt and John what we're going to see here about who wins what I love here John is the battle You've outlined the parlor game of rate increases in all that devolving back to economic growth How do we know We know we're going to be Friday or next Monday with a lot more data on our belt And as far as that data is concerned Tom and this Friday we're expecting it to be softer on payrolls you may even have a negative number Will that change the rate height conversation Will it change it in any way shape or form It's going to be a crime There's no question about it I'm a crime's going to play into all this data What I would suggest John as you see 2% GDP maybe is something for Q one How do we frame the second quarter GDP We're not there yet but maybe we begin to see that exactly one week from now At least there's a new consensus on the street becomes 5 hikes Yeah 5 hikes right now And really the question is is this as good as it gets I mean if you want to quote Russell Crowe I'm going to quote Jack Nicholson But at a certain point and we're going to get better growth ahead or just and we've seen over the past decade or is this kind of the peak And as the inflation going to decelerate growth in a way that could potentially be problematic And that I think is what you're seeing the suggestions of in the yield curve That's what's fascinating about the Steve thing that are cool over a standard chartered We'll get into the treasury calls a little bit later this morning that come from Stan chart But Tom a more definitive slowing as the year progresses slowing not just of inflation but of growth through the back end of this year That's the standard charter call At the bottom of his note from last week he talks about a risk rally And you know after what we saw on Friday and I'm not in any way predicting the market but John we begin February essentially this Monday was a 28.80 vix There's some angst out there but nothing like what we saw a week ago If you long the NASDAQ you're hoping for more of the same from this morning of another four tenths of 1% of the NASDAQ up 57 is Tom points out earnings earnings earnings Amazon a little bit later this week The S&P 500 down two tenths of 1% We are negative at 9 points there on the day We're down just a bit on the month We're down to 7% In the bond market yields are higher at the front and the back end up two basis points on ten to Lisa one to 78 56 Yeah really the question is is this going to be a front loaded Federal Reserve Is a 50 basis point rate hike at the March meeting completely off the table at 1130 a.m. perhaps San Francisco fed president Mary Daly will talk about it She's having an interview with Reuters live This of course goes to the Raphael bostic quote in the Financial Times over the weekend the Atlanta fed president coming out and saying if the data say things have evolved in a way that a 50 basis point move is required to be appropriate then I'm going to lean into that If moving in successive meetings make sense I'll be comfortable with that John you pointed out this does not mean that he supports a 50 basis point hike But it means that it's not off the table Okay maybe a hundred basis point hike Is that off the table But really the issue is do they see a problematic amount of inflation that they want to get ahead of And do they suggest with their moves that that is what they're doing Then today what you get is the U.S. Census Bureau coming out with a report about the incomes of older Americans The reason why this is interesting to me is because you've seen the participation rates stay very low for those age 55 and older in the United States Basically retiring They've made a lot of money in the stock market It's not a great job market And frankly a lot of people are worried It is a great job market but not necessarily for the jobs that they're going to want to do especially if there is a problem with respect to COVID So how much do we see any information on that And at 2 p.m. Qatar's Amir will visit President Biden to discuss supplying Europe with more liquefied natural gas among others how much can the U.S. get support from other nations to help support Europe in the case that the conflagration between Ukraine and Russia continues to get worse and you've seen Brent crude rise to the highest levels in 7 years through $90 surging the most this month I mean I was looking at the returns this month John More than 16% You've seen that climb in Brent crude The most of both Brent and deputy on a single month Can we nail down the brammo call on fed hikes Is it a hundred basis points now for March Lisa Anything's on the table I'll just say that We're all honestly What seems likely is a 25 basis point hike It seems unlikely they'd go 50 basis points But what they say about the balance sheet what they say about the parameters that would push them.

"And I wonder if you can take me from the moment that from when Russell Crowe calls your name through the end of this acceptance speech that will be played until the end of time. Well, the truth is, I, when they called my name, I went into some sort of shock. Clearly. I don't even remember walking up those steps. All I remember for a brief moment is hearing Russell Crowe whisper in my ear, breathe. Breathe. And then I turned around and I took a breath and I saw the auditorium and I knew that I had to start speaking. But I didn't have a speech prepared because I was sure I would have been standing there. And so I think my subconscious started rambling and what was really on my heart. Came out and I, my real first memory that I had actually won was walking backstage and one of the women backstage when you've been in the business for a while, you see the same people backstage and there's a woman that I was very close to over the years and she came and gave me a hug and it sort of snapped me out of it. And she said, holy shit, you won. And then I'm like, I won. I won. I did, and I looked and I had the gold guy in my hand. And the envelope. And I realized, holy shit. But it was almost as if I realized it backstage after the whole thing happened. Now, for somebody who is out of it, you gave a pretty memorable speech. So let's just say that one of the things you said was that you wanted to dedicate the win to quote every nameless faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this starts tonight has been open. Quote. So the door was obviously open in the best actress category, but would you have ever imagined that 20 years later, which is right now, no other black woman would have yet passed through it..

"That chemistry between paul. Benny russell crowe in that. They were packed with each other such a good movie. I love that movie man. And when when i saw there was a sequel. I didn't read the article. I just went off the headline. And so i was hesitantly excited about it. I mean i would have been way more excited. Had we gotten this announcement you know maybe back in two thousand five. Yeah like that and it was the same. The same cast coming back and it was a sequel. Because like you said it. Does it sets it up as a sequel hundred percent and so i'll watch it but it's man i don they're gonna have to nail the casting and i don't know in in in that it seems like you know russell crowe and paul brittany's characters have a history together so it's like are they going to still have those same two characters paired together. I mean that's got they're going to have to nail casting onto people and then also have still have that same chemistry together or they're going to go in a completely different direction. Roy tell did you ever watch the carlito's way prequel know jesus christ in terrible. Jesus christ yeah it was fucking oh rising or something. Yeah oh my god. I you know like that was one of those movies. When i watched carlito's way i was kinda like man. If they made a fucking carlito prequel that would be so awesome. Like give us the back story. Like fucking how they how how he met sasso because like they talked about like how sassa was like the shit back in the day and they give us all that stuff that the movie was absolutely terrible. So it's like i don't you know anytime. I hear that they're doing prequel. Hey tempted that. I hear that. They're doing prequels that they don't have like the original people that were involved doing it. I always go back and think about carlito's way the sequel prequel and how that let me down. Paul did you watch master and commander. Oh yeah yeah. This is one of those movies. We did a midnight run to Back in the day. It was a lot of fun and i agree with everything. Joe said i mean if they're not gonna follow like explore the beginning of the relationship with those two. I think for this even be a success. They need to get a big name in here to headline this after not bringing russell crowe back like put chris evans in this or something. It's gotta have something big to draw people into a property. That's been out of our minds for seventeen years. Yeah yeah yeah we'll see. Yeah i have. God i just i was really really hoping for for a direct sequel guys ready to jump into marvel news if you're not going to do it anyway. So the question is irrelevant. Marvel marble.

My best My best work and and you know we just did a what is it. Did you see green light. Absolutely a movie was fifty grand. Wow it's like one of my favorite things i've ever done is a fifty thousand dollar manny. It's unbelievable how that works. Because i feel like all the great movies whether we're talking good will hunting or like movies that are made for cheap somewhat cheap but like fifty. Grand sets a new precedent. I feel like for that movie. I can't get over that. I made like a proof of concept short for western. That i wrote it costs fifty grand. You know Desks ridiculous angela's fifty grand. This is nothing when it comes to make. It's like making it for free. I mean it's it's unbelievable off. His i mean i like i like the some of the stuff i did on bosch definitely and and and i didn't get much to do on westworld but i liked that wonderful. Yeah from dusk till dawn. You've done some some some amazing things in one of the things. I've been dying. Gaffey was about three ten to yuma I feel like it's like the last great western came out in two thousand seven. I feel like it's the last great western warranty for a long time. That father son story where you know Russell crowe sees that you know. Oh my god this is. I don't know the way. His character evolved that movie. I don't know what are your thoughts on. I just feel like it's one of the greatest movies to come out. Certainly in the last fifteen to twenty years it has such heart of the the the way characters evolve. I dunno chris. Your thoughts on my my best. Memories are watching a movie with my father. I absolutely love it. I mean if you think about you think about like Okay let's say like like tombstone unforgiven three ten to yuma. That's that's like a twenty five year span you know. That's that's like the best Three like high end. Quality like imperfect westerns in twenty five years. So i i agree with you. Well, first of all, he made some statement He didn't interview the podcast the other day. And immediately half of the media went to listen to the spoiled little rich boy and he was talking about. He counts the terms carefully, but he was talking about emotional abuse. And like toxic parenting, going back generations and his decision that staying part of the royal family would continue that onto his Children. And it was. It was a very recognizable description of breaking the cycle of child abuse that anybody with any knowledge could sure could recognize And because, Yeah, I mean, my God. That existence is so sick and unnatural, you know, being part of the royal family. But anyway, so immediately half the media go so spoiled. It doesn't appreciate slandering the royal family. How dare he fall out as the Royals rubber? It's like, Oh, my God, you people are so stupid and your listeners and readers are so stupid. This guy said something smart and sensitive about loving his Children. You go to your playbook of idiocy. On the other hand, the playbook of idiots got that memorized. I don't need the little risk thing that gives me the play called, which played now I wrote that playbook. That's why you're so good in the fourth quarter. Your idea? Yeah. Anyway anyway, he went on to say somehow they got into the topic of The paparazzi Barbara and he said, I don't want to start going sort of going down the first Amendment root cause that's a huge subject and one in which I don't understand because I've only been here a short period of time. But you find a loophole in anything you blah, blah, blah. Hey, said. I've got so much to say about the First Amendment is, I sort of understand it, but it is bonkers. Okay, so some half wit Brit Says the First Amendment is bonkers. First of all, Harry. I like Ted Cruz is comment. He said. Nice that you could say that it's a good point and other people piled on and made their their points in this. Sink their ships. Oh, said one Australian newspaper columnist. He's such a tiresome flog. Shut up, Harry. That's fine. Hey, Harry. The first Amendment to the extent that I understand it, which is pretty damn thoroughly is one of the greatest gift to mankind. In the history of Homo SAPIENs. And if Britain was up its own but over progressive policies that don't work forbidding people from insulting each other, you'd adopt the First Amendment lock, stock and barrel and be a better country for it. If you'd ever like to discuss that on the Armstrong, you getting show I would be delighted to discuss that. And I won't ask about the Queen Mum one freaking time. Because I don't care is the first time I had the thought that maybe I've fallen for it again. Prince Harry looks kind of like Regal. That's a funny thing to say, um, smart and important, but this party party because he's just a good looking guy, and so I kind of thought he was kind of smart and he might not be. He might be just like an average lummox know, and I believe he's a man of courage. He was a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan, right? Perfectly good without her, but he might not be very smart, right. You might be very good with ideas. I had that happened. Just the other night. There was a guy and it's weird how we're built this way. Where Kelly and his group of anarchists violently rebel against their British rulers nineteen. Seventeen George MCI plays Ned Kelly. The film also stars Russell. Crowe Nicholas Holt Thomasson. Mackenzie and Charlie Hunnam so strong. Cast their Adam. You're able to get an early look at this one before. It's on demand release. Did the cast live up to. Its Promise House the film in general some of it definitely did in terms of the cast. This is actually my first. Kerr Zal film. Haven't seen any of the other three that you mentioned despite the fact that Michael Fast Bender has been in those two that you mentioned and I'm always down for Good Shakespeare Adaptation. I can't compare obviously this film the Kelly Gang to his adaptation of Macbeth specifically but there is a lot of the Scottish play in his telling of Ned Kelly. Se Davis from our beloved. The Baba Duke plays his mother in this film and she is not someone to cross. She's domineering she's vengeful. It's born from years of oppression as a woman and as an Irish woman living under English rule in Australia. You hear her in the trailer. Seda a young Ned. You're a man. Now you go out and show the world. This isn't a gentle mother's encouragement. It's an order and like Macbeth himself. As ned gets closer to his fate the matter he gets and that unhinged hallucinatory spirit is. What colonel taps into visually think about the late nineteenth century? We get in. John Hill coats the proposition as a counterpoint. This is not that at all. This is realism clashing with fantasy to the point where there are times in certain sequences and shots. Josh especially a recurring motif of a man riding a horse. That feels more like more door than the Bush way outside Melbourne. And so I've dropped Macbeth. I've dropped Lord of the rings throw in the assassination of Jesse James by the Coward. Robert Ford and the pop aesthetic of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. Except with punk instead and you get some sense of what watching the true history of the Kelly. Gang is really like which may sound really amazing to you and other people. Yeah I'm I'm hooked so far. Yeah it's definitely a lot and honestly it was a little bit too much for me. Wants so much to be this fiery sneer. That doesn't conform do conventional biography and it's full of these big ideas about colonialism and storytelling and masculinity and challenging gender and sexual norms. The gang the Kelly gang actually wears dresses for me. It's just all too much of a performance of assault to really embrace and actually MCI is part of it. He's a really intriguing presence and has an unsettling physicality that he definitely brings to this role. A presence was kind of all he was in nineteen seventeen. That's kind of by the design of that film and I haven't read anything about his performance but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that he went really method here that he he went so deep. And as I said there's there's an intensity to it there's a real physicality to it but he's burrowed so deep into it. So deep into Ned Kelly psyche that he never emerges for me and I can appreciate the audacity of what Kerr's doing here and his. I our first shot of young. Ned actually is him peering through a slit in his makeshift home while his mother is engaged in a sex act with a paying customer. That's a British officer played by Hunnam and then later at the end it is big showdown with authorities. He's wearing iron over his head for protection. With the sliver is is that matches that exact same point of view so crucial knows what he's doing absolutely and he does have a really game cast Russell. Crowe shows up for a little bit in this movie. And there's a lot of fun as outlaw. Who Basically pays for? He buys a young Ned as an indentured servant to teach him the trade. And I really like Nicholas Holt. In this movie. He shows up maybe about midway through as a really charming despicable and entitled English constable. Who BEFRIENDS NED in the family? Until the family decides that they're not going to subjugate themselves to him like he expects everyone to do so some juicy fund performances here and crystals definitely doing allot as I said in terms of the filmmaking sounds like there might even be a little bit of animal kingdom in there too with the mother son Dynamic and of course the Australians setting so I. I'm intrigued by those comparisons. We'll we'll have to see if the catch up with if it works a little bit better for me. The True History of the Kelly gang is available to rent on demand right. Now the new one you caught up with Josh is called Sela and the spades the directing debut of Theresa Poh. It had its debut back in January at Sundance and it came to Amazon prime. This past weekend in your letterbox review you wrote any movie that mixes the DNA of mean girls. Brick and schooldays has my attention. We're all over the place with our references in this show so far. Tell me more. Yeah this this could be a lazy short and in some ways doing this exercise. But I think it's it is really helpful in this case because those are great films with distinct styles each trying to do something that maybe you hadn't quite seen before done in that way and mixing it all together is really exciting. That also puts a ton of pressure on a relatively small film like Sela and the spades and so I don't know if it's the sort of pressure this movie can entirely bare but I like that. All of these elements are in here that the basic scenario is selling. The speights takes place at an elite boarding school and we follow the illicit dealings and also the the relationships among various student factions there called and each of these factions. They're essentially like criminal gangs. So Sela played by Lovey Simone. She runs the drug-dealing spades. And you know there are maybe some Macbeth Lady Macbeth specifically comparisons to make here in her ambition and the way she holds grip on power. She does take an underclassmen under her wing. But as we come to learn you know it may not be the most altruistic reasons that underclassmen played by Celeste O'Connor now both of those performances are really strong by Simone and O'Connor There are some good supporting turns to. I could see this being one of those smaller. First films where two or three of the actors in them and this happened with mean girls as well right pop up in later films and you really see what what great talents. They have their There's also the whole criminal element calls on brick of course that this is going on among high schoolers beneath the adults is. It's kind of amazing. How little the adults have to play in in this world And then there are some really striking flourishes by PLO as director. And here's where some of the the school days Spike Lee school days comparisons come in because Sela is also the head of the spirit squad for the school and they have a direct address to the camera routine just about what. It's like to be a seventeen year old

The Most Rewatchable Films Off All Time!
"I asked all of you to pick five of your most reliable movies even as I'm here now. I'm thinking of other movies that I would have put on my list to Adam do you want to kick us off with one of yours absolutely? My number five is more of a movie. Batman begins and for me. That's because it has a four x structure James Unconventional. It basically created the modern superhero movie. It was the one that I think we all wanted and they finally figured out how to make it. And there's really no downtime. There's a little bit once once. The Second Act ends Bruce's coming back from being a Ninja. There's a little bit of time but even then it just keeps going well. I think that's part of it too. It feels like the movies constantly restarting like. It doesn't lose the momentum that you got from the last thing. But if almost feels like buster scruggs like it's like and now a news story in this world you love except that it it still builds on the stakes of the previous one. So yeah you have the beginning and you have what you have him going going here. It's Ninja Studies. But then flashback of him as a kid. Yeah and then but then it goes then it goes all right now. He's back in Gothenburg. There's more to this than just him being Ninja. It's him in Gotha somewhere between forty five minutes. An hour between forty five minutes in an hour until he becomes Batman Which is the that is. The best way of doing every other version has been high and Michael Keaton. I'll be Batman today. I hope you enjoy the film kids and then it just there. It's interesting that you liked that because I feel like mostly my gripe with a lot of Origin movies is. Oh you're it's the wait to get to that point and you're like just have them be it already. I think is Batman begins it so well and it had not been done before other than you got taste of like in the animated series and. I think it was like fracturing. This is on the tip of everyone's talking about if you if you just did a few things man and then they'd knocked it out of the park and it was. It's so damn good. I think that that's like probably the one Batman movie other than the dark night but dark knight even a watch. Jerry the Was He the joker parts. But like Batman begins. I love from beginning to end. See I know. I've definitely seen dark knight more than I've Seen Batman begins. I saw dark knight three times in the theater rich but I understand the news. Twelve years ago cheaper. I understand the difference that you're expanding because they think dark knight is one coherent story. That is just snowballing. Whereas Batman begins is like like you know these restarts again and again and it's way easier to be like I'm just GonNa Throw Him Batman begins and watch it. Yeah and infielder and tear to your point at least taking awhile. I think probably because audiences were ready for this. It's more satisfying when you get to Batman instead of just getting right away like you learned to appreciate it like you go. Oh this journey because remember. There's a guy who worked at the time he's like why has Bam Entry Ninjas stupid as a 'cause he trains jerk compelling to watch as well a lot Lindsey one of the movies on your list. I actually knew this was one. Eight year your. He's talked about buying definitely easy to put a Christmas movie on like a Rewatch ables list of because you have the opportunity every year to have those feelings and this is my number one holiday. Christmas rewatch -able movie. I watch it every year. I made you guys all watch it and put it. I bought it on Amazon Prime. Tell me lousy with the movie watcher itself. Oh thank you you never said the movement. Sorry I have eyeballs. Oh a lot of lead up and then you're GONNA build fit. I thought it was building to James. Caan you're a big fan of and the actor who played the kid overall favorite movies. Now I love it so much. Because it's it's that feel-good movie I mean it's a holiday movie so that's like Bilton but it's just really funny Yeah Yeah it's a great holiday comedy. I I remember walking away from this movie and being like I like the two thirds of it and it's charming guy. That's and that's why we're lucky that we have a will. Ferrell holiday movie. That isn't Daddy's home. Two good that we have this they were GONNA call that. Daddy's homer Yeah L. Flake. I think you hit the nail on the head with Chris Movies They. They need to be engineered for that. Yeah because that's the sign of a good lasting. Chris movie like home alone. I've seen more times than I can say to. The it's Christmas story marathon. I was GONNA say as long as it's better than a Christmas story and kids have to grow up watching that anymore. Oh God yeah. So here's the I think the interesting thing about a Christmas movie is that it should be about more than just. Christmas is like hard about Christmas. But it's about way more than just Christmas. Yeah like family. You kinda reunited so it's it's a from a different time when you could. You could mock little people. Yeah well That man went on to be tearing Lancaster. And what have you done with your life me not a lot not a lot. James. You hit the nail on the head with twenty years. I've seen this movie a billion fucking times gladiator. Yeah Wow yeah well. It's because there are lots of obviously we could see the movie. Certain people were putting in and stuff like that but I was like. I was like well action movies. Sometimes there's an action movie that you can watch and of course there's dumb ones like you can put any dumb silly action. Movie that's digestible on there. But gladiators like an epic and I couldn't imagine watching an epic scale movie historical epic type movie like this over and over again but gladiator. I have like I remember. I was in a Latin class in high school and the teacher didn't care at all about teaching and would be like We're GONNA watch gladiator. Nice it's like we're gonNA teach you about gladiator classes and long enough to watch all gladiator. Come back the next time says. When do we stop and then you go? I think it was what he was fighting the goals. Which is like the first fifteen minutes of the movie go? Okay you'd start there wouldn't finish and then you'd you'd end up watching gladiator again and again. I watch gladiator in two different classes in high school. That's pretty good But yeah it's just like I just think it's so digestible when you think about some of the other movies in this genre it's like exodus gods and kings and like like these big scale historical drama pieces and stuff just didn't none of them. None of them are is fun is gladiator is in my opinion. It's a dense movie. It's also covers a lot of ground here. there's not a lot of misunderstandings two and half hours pilates two and a half hours but like kind of like we're saying about some of those other movies it like has several start. It's like okay. Well there's the beginning part of the movie Where he's he's soldier but then there's the part where he's training and then there's the part where he's leaving rebellion and like it so there's all these like restarts and stuff. Yeah I honest I still think this is one of walking penises best performances and I feel like it's a role that you would never see him again. Oh Yeah Russell. Crowe no keep Russell Crowe. I'll never liked this ever again. Heartthrob Sexy Action Lead Caesar Cut. I've never seen this movie. It's real good yeah. He didn't joy in a lot is like I'm going to say that a lot about some of the films early. It's okay I mean if you ever wondered we're doomed got his mask from. You should watch glad I will watch a lot of these movies. I'm sure but yeah no. I Love Gladiator. It's pretty it's weird because it was one of one best picture and like people in hindsight were like really gladiator. And I'm like yeah because it's just because it's like a popcorn action movie doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the acclaim. It

'Boy Erased' confronts the controversial practice of gay-conversion therapy
"From homosexual or bisexual heterosexual. I guess they don't have the other way round. You would send you to make you gay, right? It says there's virtually no reliable evidence that sexual orientation can be changed and medical bodies worn. The conversion therapy practices are ineffective and potentially harmful. The American psychiatric association opposes psychiatric treatment based on the assumption. That gay is a mental disorder. They I mean wasn't that long ago that the American psychiatric association said homosexuality was a mental disorder. I don't have any doubts to back this up. But I'm willing to bet that it's it has a success rate of zero percent. Oh, yeah. I mean, I've met people. I bet there's people that have gone to it, and then practiced heterosexual sex the rest of their lives and then freaking miserable. Exactly, I'm reading right here. Says techniques used in conversion therapy proprietary nineteen Eighty-one in the US and western Europe included ice, pick lobotomies chemical castration hormonal treatment at aversion treatments such as the application of electric shock to the hands and genitals, nausea inducing drugs. This is nineteen eighty one. So in one thousand nine hundred eighty they were doing this in the United States. The they'll give you drugs while show you homo erotic stimuli. Unbelievable. So they also apparently fan all Abbas CDs from your record. Yeah. Great deal about this movie. Boy a race. That's just a really wonderful film. And everybody sprouts is that I was all prepared for it to have a lot of horrific stuff like that and thinking this would just be so painful to watch. And it was kind of interesting the way the minister that runs this who's played by the guy that directs the movie Joel Edgerton, there's a popular actor and director. He actually really does care about the kids. So it's it's kind of interesting to watch a person that cares about it's just totally misguided. It how to handle kids and what he thinks about sexuality. So it's kind of interesting not some nurse ratchet type character that's even scarier though. Right. Well, right. That's true. I mean, you could make an argument. But, but I mean, at least you start just just typical movie where you know, he's always trying to, you know, get the kids and World War without giving away. Too much of the plot is what what what goes on it gets called boy erased, and it's opening this weekend, actor Lucas hedges who was great in Manchester by the sea where we got an Oscar nomination the young kid. And he yeah. Yeah. He was really good in that. Yeah. I've seen them and other stuff too. Yeah. And he's a he's the all American kid plays basketball team dates cheerleader, and you know, his data flip Russell Crowe. Who's also a Baptist minister. So if ever you're gonna come out to your parents as gay it probably doesn't work in your favor. If your dad is a minister now. Nicole Kidman is the mom, and she goes along with it. And you know, so then he spent the rest of the movie trying to get out of there and trying to come to grips with the sexuality. And it's got some really powerful stuff in it. It's just it's gonna get nominated for some Oscars. Wow. So. Is there one of these deals in light of these movies? Here's a cliche is that the the like in an American Beauty the gun anti gay ends up kissing Kevin Spacey at the end because he's causing it, right? And you said that there is that that happened in this movie as well. Yes. So one of the people working at the place that is that is the case, you know, he's one of the adult counselors. He's still trying to keep it bottled in. You know what you're seeing? There was a movie a month ago called the education or Cameron post that also dealt with this that had. Actress named Chloe moat scrapes from kick ass movie. She was in that. So it's it's really interesting. There's been two movies on this subject. And you know, the interesting thing about this. I remember would midnight express came out and the real story midnight express, forget the name of the the it's a true story about a guy that stuck in a Turkish prison for smuggling drugs. And he's there for a long time. And and he's he has a sexual relationship with a guy, but he's not gay gets out and continues his life and the
