"I'm Keith Macarthur. Unlocking Bryson's brain is a podcast about my son. I am the rare disease that keeps him from walking or talking Bryson's perfect. His life is really hard and our families. Search for a cure. Oh My Gosh. Maybe science is ready for this. It's part memoir part medical mystery. We can do just about anything modifying. Dna Heart in my throat cure. His controversial unlocking braces brain. Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. This is a CBC podcast. Dr Brian Goldman. Welcome to ICU. Placard the show about medicine from all sides of the since the World Health Organization declared Kovac Nine thousand nine hundred. Pandemic hospitals across Canada have kept most visitors outside the sliding doors. There are a few exceptions. Like if you're giving birth or your loved. One is critically ill or dying but for the majority of people hospitalized with cove nineteen or any other condition like pneumonia a heart attack or cancer. It means patients only on the inside and loved ones. Stay on the outside. The aim of this is stringent infection control by limiting the number of ASEM dramatic people into the hospital who could be carrying the virus. The idea is to protect frontline healthcare workers and the most vulnerable of patients from the corona virus. But as time passes were also coming to grips with the fact that there's a cost to that Russ. Morgan is eighty seven years old. He had a stroke and was admitted to ABC hospital in February. He spent time in the ICU. And is now on the Rehab floor? His daughter Donna and other family members used to visit him regularly but they haven't seen him since. The hospital began restricting visitors on March twenty first. We reached on Morgan via skype from her home in New Westminster. It's been nearly a month since you were last able to visit. Your Dad Drought Rust. What's that been like for you? Well it's just been terrible because the worry that we have about his both his physical health and his mental health and being so isolated is very overwhelming. And it's been very difficult for my mother. She's coping with being on her own for the first time in sixty four years and then worrying about her husband's so much not being able to stay in touch with him very well. What's been like for Your Dad? I think his lonely and bored because he has some dementia. Sometimes he has to remember that he's had a stroke and then he also has to remember why none of us are visiting him. And it can be very heartbreaking on the phone when we when we get the opportunity to and we have to explain to him why we're not there and we wish we were there before. The hospital closed the ward to visitors. How often were you able to see him? We were there every day. You know my mom and myself most days but always at least one of us there every day and in addition to visiting him. Would you help care for him? Yes we often tried to go over mealtime and and just assist him you know. He has some use of his right arm. Which is good but his left side is paralyzed and so we would help him. You know open the packages and containers for his lunch and you know. Get him the things he needed. So so that felt like a very important thing we were doing and now we're not able to do that and would you help with his rehab. We mainly I think. We were there as a kind of cheerleading squad. We really encouraged him to do that. And I think that's really fallen away since we're not there to encourage him and explained to him that the Rehab is. What's going to get him able to get ready to go home? How often are you able to talk with Your Dad Now? It really varies. We took in a cell phone. We had a staff come out and we sent in a cell phone. That's relatively easy to use. But he still seems to have a great deal of difficulty so it really is quite sporadic so it may be two or three times a week but they're very brief conversations. What's been your experience getting updates on how he's doing from a hospital staff. My feeling is that there's not a plan for how to communicate with families even that first day which was on March twenty first that we went and the word was closed to visitors. We hadn't received a notice or anything from that. I live some distance away and I I travel. I travel about twenty five minutes to get there but other people might be traveling a good deal further visit but we haven't received a call or anything to tell us that visitors were no longer welcome and then since then is not really regular communication. We phone there and then the staff may be too busy to handle the call for or you know not able to. At that moment often the call goes to voicemail and that doesn't seem to get returned so yes. There's not really an organized way and I know. Maybe WE'RE PESTERING THEM. Both my mom and myself and my brother who lives further away on the island so he couldn't visit as often phone the ward and. I know that that must take a big load onto the staff there as well so if there was some Organiz communication it would feel better. You're you're not just a visitor and and that's something that that a lot of people who don't have a loved one in hospital May Not understand as a family caregiver. How much would you say your dad depends on you? And other members of the family being by his side during during his hospitalization I really think he needs the encouragement. That family gives him to work on his healing. He's quite elderly. He's eighty seven and that encouragement is really necessary. And we're very worried about him kind of giving up just staying in bed and not not you know. He has the ability to be going into the wheelchair and move around but I think without the encouragement. He's kind of fading and we're really worried about him so you already have evidence that he's fading in and not moving forward at this point yes he's definitely participating a lot less in. Rehab from what we can gather both by talking to him and talking to his nurses.

"You know, it's always fun around the holidays when you get a little surprise. Maybe a little gift that you weren't expecting. And my next guest got that. And so much more. His name is Chris Harry. He is the senior editor for Florida Gators dot com down on my brother's neck of the woods in Gainesville, Florida. How are you? Chris. Welcome to extreme jeans. I'm doing well. How are you? You know, I'm doing great. And I've had this kind of thing happened myself. And and also sent some things other people's way that is kind of similar to how this set up for you. But let's just talk about this little text that changed your life and how it came about. Well, what happened was my brother lives out in California? And out of the blue one day. He got a direct message via Facebook from somebody. He did not know. He had to take a double take wondering if you didn't know this person, but the attachment, and he opened it up, and it was a YouTube clip, and he clicked on it. And it was a black and white video from nineteen fifty two from a game show called winner-take-all. My brother was just looking at the thing date on February twenty eighth nineteen fifty two. He had no idea. Why thing with their and lo and behold a couple minutes into thing Bill Cullen if you were a kid growing up in the sixties or seventies. You watch game show choice four stations on your television. That's it Bill columnist guy showed up on a lot of game shows. He was the original toast. I believe of the ten thousand dollars pyramid. Even before dick Clark. I know he's on the crisis. Right. Tell the truth. He did that. Right there next to kitty Carlisle. Really, really? Anyway. So they're still calling any says, Don Pardo. Introduce our next guest, and the unmistakable voice of Don Pardo steps up and says, let's bring out S K three route hairy and s k three route ferry is my father. And they're walking onto the camera in his sailors uniform from that year with my father about one hundred and thirty pounds, and any I I can only imagine what my brother, my brother was taken think thing I was thinking when I thought for the first time, but it's really hard to put into words. And yet, it's something obviously, I felt compelled to put into words I wrote a story about it and submitted it to the Washington Post, which ran it in and inspired light section several weeks later, which I'm sure is why we're talking now. But the bottom line is with this is my brother Senate to me. And I said where did this come from? And he sent back a message to this person. And we're just calling Jeff saying where did you get this? And I'm sorry, if I don't know you, but how do we know each other and the person answers back that they did not know each other. And there was no reason to apologize. But he had a hobby of watching all game shows. Seeing people on all game shows, and I'm talking nineteen fifty two. I don't know where I don't know where the actor sky finds his stuff on the internet. But his hobby is to watch all game shows in the middle of the night, Houston insomniac explain and he would track down families of these people on these game shows and send them these videos out of the blue, and we were the recipient of it. And it's a twenty four minute clip. My father won some bedsheets and two watches on the thing. And what's funny about this is that he was in New York on shore leave and some friend of his game tickets to a game show. But it wasn't this game show. It was another game show called the big payoff. Okay. We knew in on the big payoff in nineteen fifty two because you won seven thousand dollars on that. And there's a little clip of an article from the Winchester stars where Winchester Virginia where he and my mother grew up a little clip from how he won the seven thousand dollar prize package which included a trip to Europe we knew about that. But. As my mom would explain to us after she saw the video for the first time. Oh, yeah. I guess he left that show and the producers from this other show Jason studio, solid minutes. Uniform say we want you to come in this when he goes, well, I was just on the southern they goes, okay, different network. And they. Behold. That's where this video came out say something that was unexpected. And be something my brother, and I will certainly cherish. And because it's moving talking pictures of my father before both of us were born before he married, my mother, and it's just not something that you would ever expect to see you quits yourself enough to this for somebody who would be my in my late, Shirley and have this sort of a thing fall in your lap treasure. If you will of time in your parents life, were you you could not have seen them in this wet. No, no question, you know, and I've had that kind of experience because ten years ago. I I discovered YouTube very early on and found a video of my father playing in a big band, the Russ Morgan orchestra nineteen thirty six, and I I you know, he was he was a professional musician whole life, but I had never seen him play. And so what a gift and when I read your story. I'm thinking L, man. Here's a guy. I gotta. Talk to because what an amazing fine. Now. What's interesting is? This guy Jaffe is kind of maintained his air of mystique has he not? That's putting mildly. You know? So first of all I pitched this story. And I it in the story a couple of Texas changes he had with my brother via Facebook messenger. Wasn't this guy who was answering back in a timely fashion? The answer back whenever he did. And after this story ran on January second post tweeted it out the thirteen followers on their account. I tweeted I got nineteen thousand in a job that I do. And we put it on Facebook, a lot of friends from home and a lot of my friends knew my, parents course, and they saw this and the response post on Facebook and on Twitter, and even if you go to the Washington Post web site fun story, it's approaching one hundred comments at the bottom of that. And I think people aren't used to people being overly nice on social media, and yours this guy who just wherever he is for all. I know he's in Sri Lanka. I. You're not the first one to reach out to me scripts. The new service emailed me CBS evening news with take Hartman producer, call me and one very much to do a story on this person. And my brother son, a message and told him that these people really were interested and his response was I'm a private person. I do this for me. And thank you for everything. And it's a joy to do this for people. Yeah. And he doesn't do it for the credit and the not sent back to me complimenting the story. I wrote was almost as touching in his heart warming the video I was able to see my father. So this whole experience, obviously has been a blessing for me from California. And from my mom who's still alive in Virginia at eighty six years old so to come at the holiday season is the confluence of it all it's been extraordinary. Well, it is amazing. First of all what people can find now online to track down, folks. Like that. I watched the clip and your father goes through. This whole thing with Bill Cullen about having to first names. And then he asked the father's name and and asked his mother's name. So, you know, now, you have the grandparents, and that's that's not that difficult to track down, especially when you have websites like ancestry and family search and others for living people, which is family tree now dot com. That's how it's done. It doesn't take that much effort to do it. In a lot of people are doing that. We see people doing it in helping folks for instance, solve DNA problems. And they call them searching chills. Right. And I think it's just because there's nothing that makes you feel better than than just really improving somebody's life with with a fine. Like that. I'm sure that just has pretty much hung with you. Now what's been about six weeks? It's gonna go away that glow anytime soon is it. No. And he said that we were really easy to find. And. I guess maybe he is a person who skill with those websites for what you're talking about. In terms. I can track down families. Don't have you. What's funny is that in the days that followed the story coming out some happened with a YouTube clip that was embedded in Washington Post website version of the story where people were clicking on it was saying video unavailable, and I guess my brother messenger back to Jeff's and said is there something with the video because we haven't heard from him since he sent him the story, we have no maybe he was upset that I wrote the story had hurt. We just didn't know he's a mysterious person. Sure. Wonderful. But at the same time he shot back that happens sometimes on YouTube where it'll say that and low behold another YouTube link pops in he said, I found it somewhere else in the second version. He sent. Wow. So he goes, I'm not a very technical person. But I've found if you're not a very technical person. But you've found these archives treasures for our family. And he didn't find it. Once she found it twice. Yeah. That's pretty impressive. Well, you know, there there is a tool out there. And I wish I could tell you what it was because I remember using it once sometime back, but you can actually capture those videos off of YouTube or any other site that carries video so you can burn your own DVD of it and have it. So you never lose it in case, it does get taken down at some point. Why I know searching around for Scott and his some searches for the winner, take all and actually one pops up. And I started watching it, but Gary Morton was host. And again, if you're you've been around a while, you may remember, Gary Gary Morton, listen host of a lot of Morton or Gary Moore, Gary Moore, you're right Gary Moore, and he walks out this ninety seven year old guy on I've got a secret. Oh, yeah. And he's saying all right. This is so and so his name was something seem more and the guy fallen down you had a patch on his head. And he's got a secret. Let's let the audience in on the secret. And they flash the secret on the screen said, I witnessed ABRAHAM LINCOLN being assassinated by John Wilkes. Yeah. Yeah. That is out of YouTube believe it or not. Yes. A guy who was on a early game show who was ninety seven years old, and I guess at the age of five he was at our American cousin. Any die? Just a short time after Eileen like within three weeks or a month or something after that show was shot. It was absolutely astonishing. Well, I am so happy for you, Chris and your family, and it's a great piece of video, and we're going to link to it at extreme jeans dot com..

He was he was a professional musician this whole life, but I had never seen him play. And so what a gift, and when I read your story, I'm thinking, oh, man. Here's a guy. I gotta talk to because what an amazing fine. Now. What's interesting is this guy, Jeff he's kind of maintained his air of mystique. Cassie not. Footing mildly. So first of all, I I went to pitch this story and I- -cluded in the story. A couple of Texas changes he had with my brother via Facebook messenger. But he wasn't this guy who was answering back in a timely fashion. The answer back whenever he did. And after this story ran on January second the post tweeted it out thirteen million followers on their account. I tweeted I got nineteen thousand in the job that I do. And we put it on Facebook, a lot of friends from home and a lot of my friends knew my, parents course, and they saw and the response on Facebook and on Twitter, and even if you go to the Washington Post web site fun story, it's approaching one hundred comments at the bottom of that. And I think. People aren't used to people being overly nice on social media, and yours this guy who just wherever he is for all. I know he's in Sri Lanka. I. You're not the first one to reach out to me script. The new service emailed me CBS evening news with Jay Hartman. This producer, call me and one very much to do a story on this person. And my brother son, a message and told him that these people really were interested and his response was I'm a private person. I do this for me. And thank you for everything. And it's a joy to do this for people. Yeah. And he doesn't do it for the credit and the not sent back to me complimenting the story. I wrote was almost as touching and his heart warming video I was able to see my father. So this whole experience, obviously, it's been a blessing for me from California. And for my mom, who's still alive in Virginia at eighty six years old so to come at the holiday season is the confluence of it all it's been extraordinary. Well, it is amazing. First of all what people can find now online to track down, folks. Like that. I watched the clip and your father goes through. This whole thing with Bill Cullen about having to first names. And then he asked the father's name and and asked his mother's name. So, you know, now, you have the grandparents, and that's not that difficult to track down, especially when you have websites like ancestry and family search and others for living people, which is a family tree now dot com. Now. What's it been about six weeks? It's gonna go away that glow anytime soon is it. No. He said that we were really easy to find. And. I guess maybe he is the person who's skill with those websites for what you're talking about. In terms. I can track down families. But what's funny is that in the days that followed the story some have with the YouTube clip that was embedded in. No, Washington's website version of the story where people were clicking on and it was saying video unavailable, and I guess my brother messenger back to Jeff's and said is there something with the video because we haven't heard from him since he sent him the story we have. No, maybe he was upset that I wrote the story we hadn't hurt. We just didn't know he's a mysterious person. Wonderful. At the same time. He shot back that happens sometimes on YouTube where it'll say that and low behold another YouTube link pops in he said, I found it somewhere else in the second version. He said. HD? Wow. She's so he goes, I'm not a very technical person. But I found if you're not a very technical person. But you've found these are type treasures for our family. And you didn't find it. Once you found it twice. Well, I I know searching around for Scott and his some searches for the winner, take all and actually one popped up. And I started watching it. But Gary Morton was the host. And again, if you're if you've been around a while, you remember, Gary Gary Morton, listen host of a lot of Morton, Gary Moore, Gary Moore, you're right Gary Moore, and he walks out this ninety seven year old guy on I've got a secret. Oh, yeah. And he's saying all right. This is so and so his name was something see more and the guy falling down. He had a patch on his head. He's got a secret. Let's let the audience in on the secret. And they flash the secret on the screen. It said I witnessed ABRAHAM LINCOLN being assassinated by John looks. Yeah. Yeah. That is out of YouTube believe it or not. Yes. A guy who was on a early game show who was ninety seven years old, and I guess at the age of five he was at our American cousin. Any die? Just a short time after I lean like within three weeks or a month or something after that show was shot. It was absolutely astonishing. Well, I'm so happy for you, Chris and your family, and and it's a great piece of video, and we're going to link to it at extreme jeans dot com. So people can see what.

"For the final time own socity. We already full of a start, and it will be ready for this is cool says starting on popish in in many Ephron cycles make Williams only in second place, ill-timed lead, but well, we will see in say, make Lee and Richard Davies. Your second, the great ahead of agent m.'s and Simon some clouds and Jason green streets, Joan husker, Scott Jewish, and was mocking rounding out the eleven strong grades. The race out does get a new way up to the line for the first time and say, he cares why make millions insulate by turn. Number one, eight ounce running, very white. Second place goes to Davies. It seems at the moment. A great starts. Cool says in third place on make lay challenging full that third position. You go left right and left. Oh, happens. All extremely ties underneath extremely slippery conditions where grip valleys as a premium, it's no good saw full. Definitely not a good thoughts. Full Simon Emmerson out of this writes in retirement, full Shanley due to problems. Lewin cuts mic winners at your hundreds problems as second place. Ahead of make which Davies in full place moments agent ends in fed ahead of John Hoskins, Jason rain, son, Kyle's schedule at Simon Emmerson, and Russ Morgan in need rise to deem it seems to be taken the start. It is a good song. As you say, full, make Lee healed low. He did start in thirty was pushed back in the first Kona, and he has over this first lap to Vinnie be pressuring drank quotas now full that second place. And it is a case of when rather than if because I think he is just all over him make lays down the inside lots of curb down inside did he might get. He's. What now we as he's gone. And will come Jack Cole to those off scrapping tooth and nail Lustig and power out that non side-by-side Mickley is push out. Jack faulted ain't gonna be neck and neck. As I come over the line. Mickley didn't coin gay junk. That's already on the brakes that see down at turn one. No McWilliams has two point six seconds. So it's gone up from one point free. Pulling away to the normal amount normally routes this group, but he's it's not far off here. The moment. Then we to tear the moment then make Williams leading by corner significant margin, two point, six seconds. John causes in second place. Still pink incentive. Make lay is in the place, trying to attack owns, has county make it to seventy not quite time for they discover the cousin of it too wet to Ailey might a late move on them. It's really rotating.
