China Bars Entry to 2 Members of W.H.O. Team Investigating Covid in Wuhan

"Scientific investigators from the World Health Organization have finally been given permission by the Chinese government to search for the origins of the Wuhan coronavirus. Here's Jim Rupe. It was last week that wh o Director general, Dr Ted Rose and not Gabriel ASIS expressed his frustration at China for reversing his permission for investigators to hit the ground in Wuhan. I'm very disappointed with this news, given that two members had already begun their journeys and others were not able to travel at the last minute. But Thursday after a call from Dr Ted Rose, Chinese officials granted permission for the team to enter Wuhan. Life in Wuhan, we're told is relatively back to normal, the north of the country. There is a resurgence of the virus. China has assisted for months that just because Wuhan is where the first cluster of cases were discovered, does not necessarily mean Wuhan is ground zero for the outbreak. The suspicion is by scientists, however. That the virus that has killed nearly two million people worldwide at this point since 2019 jump from a bad to an animal to human somewhere in the country, Southwest Chinese officials maintain the virus most likely came from abroad, perhaps an infected seafood. Tho. Scientists reject that. The team includes scientists and virus experts from the US, the UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, guitar and Vietnam, all anxious to get their hands microscopes, probes and Petri dishes in defining the root cause the host animal, the animal that caught the virus from the bed and, in turn infected the human And where that happened. The mission is a priority for W. Joe and the international team. It's kind of on hold. However, the team has to quarantine for two weeks before even a rubber glove can be put on. I'm

SPACE WEEK: Every Moon, Ranked

"Too small notes before we hit you with some hot moon takes one. Obviously, we're not talking about all one hundred and fifty moons. We picked handful from the top ten, and then we'll do a lightning round on some others. All of these bodies meet the technical definition of Moon meaning they orbit an asteroid or a planet, not the Sun. Second Note. Jennifer's list also includes a few of what NASA calls provisional moons. These are bodies that are kind of, let's say unofficial maybe haven't been studied that well or confirmed yet. Yeah. So. I want to add that the scientists that I spoke to. They said that they're probably way more moons out there that we haven't even discovered yet. Well. So cool. Okay. All right. So number ten on your list diddy moon yet say, yes is did he moon? So, did he moon it's not circling a planet. It is actually circling an asteroid it. It is very tiny. It's about five hundred, twenty, four feet in diameter and it's orbiting. The asteroid diddy. Moss in it's it's kind of part of a very cool future NASA mission, right? Yes. So did he moon is part of a really important the item mission and the item mission is like this cosmic dress rehearsal basically, NASA wants to send a spacecraft to slam into diddy moon and knock it off course. Now I know what you're thinking. It sounds pretty familiar and yes, it is essentially the plot of Armageddon. Show me. But it's a really really important mission in it's going to help us test one of the ways that we think we might be able to potentially deflect a hazardous object that might be pearling towards earth. So cool. Okay. Number six called by one expert you talk to the most underrated moon in the solar system orbiting Jupiter Ganymede Ganymede. Ganymede is such a fascinating world Ganymede is the largest moon in our solar system. It's actually larger than Mercury Ganymede is also the only moon that we've known to have a magnetosphere. Cool. Earth has a magnetosphere and it's essentially this covering this kind of magnetic shell that we have of charged particles and what it does. It actually protects us from harmful radiation. So there's tons of radiation that's generated by the sun and from interstellar space, and that magnetosphere protects us it's potentially allowed life to form. Can I tell you that I am horrified to report I thought Ganymede was a made up moon Scifi show the expanse. Oh. Yes on that. Farm on Ganymede and I'm like it was a fun made up plays I love that shout the expanse it's a great show. Yeah no can't meet is just so fascinating. So number four on your list orbiting Neptune. Triton. Yes. Triton is an absolute misfit. First of all I will say it looks just like a cantaloupe if you look at the picture. How was ranked keep going I, mean, that is, of course, the important feature. But really, what's cool about Triton is that it's essentially this kind of Pluto sized object that we believe has been captured by Neptune and now orbits the planet and temperatures on Triton and we we know this thanks to the voyager two spacecraft but temperatures on Triton have dipped as low as minus three hundred ninety one degrees Fahrenheit. Super Cold Nope nope. nope. nope things. But it's partially because it's got like this ice covered surface right and that reflects a ton of the light that it receives that it's by. Yeah absolutely. That's that's another really weird thing about Tritan on it has what's called an incredibly high Albedo. So that's basically a measurement of how much late a body reflects. and. Triton's is actually really high. It reflects about seventy percent of the sunlight. It receives I'm like in Triton I'm going to be honest with you Ganymede. But I'm like Triton right now array. Okay. Time for the top three Jennifer. Are you prepared I? Think so bronze-medal orbiting Saturn Moon. That contains the big four ingredients for life hydrogen carbon nitrogen and oxygen enceladus. Yeah. So enceladus is absolutely fascinating moon. So the Cassini mission when it arrived to observe Saturn's moons, it noticed that there were jets spewing out of ENCELADUS, right? So they actually took a detour and had Cassini swing through those jets to collect samples of that liquid into turned out to be liquid water right? I remember when that happened that was wild. That was like a big deal. Yes. Absolutely, and so it really spurred a lot of interest in enceladus. Of course, we love Europa. But enceladus is really this kind of new and exciting moon and you know as you mentioned, it has the big four ingredients for life. That's really just an incredible sign that this might be one of the places where we find life. Okay. Number two on the list orbiting Jupiter lot of Okano's and some lightning. I oh. Yes. So I will admit that I have some volcanic. I really love of volcanoes. Thank you for disclosing that conflict of interest Jennifer I have to be I have to be honest. I'm anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely love volcanoes. So naturally, I O, which is the most volcanically active body in our solar system would have to take second there are over four hundred volcanoes on the surface of Iowa and they spew jets of. Lava hundreds of miles and two space. It's really incredible. Okay. So this is the wildest thing about Iot to me is that I owe can generate like true current. Yes. So of all of the Galilee and moons of Jupiter, Iowa's actually the closest to Jupiter and so sweeps through its magnetic field and that causes it to create this electric current it can generate. As much as three million amperes, and actually this jolt of electricity is then shot back to Jupiter and it creates lightning in the planet's. Fear I mean, that's cooler than the volcanoes. Some some people would say that. Yes. Okay. Your number one moon Jennifer orbiting. Saturn. A Moon I could walk on with potentially nothing more than an oxygen. Mask Titan. So Titan. Is. The only other place that we've observed so far that has a thick substantial atmosphere. So our atmosphere of course is. Critical for life here on earth and tighten, it has a similar has a sort of similar atmospheric also mostly composed of nitrogen but the second most common gas in the atmosphere is actually methane. So right. So instead of like US having oxygen the next most abundant compound in that moons atmosphere in Titan's atmosphere is methane. Yeah. Absolutely, and you think about Earth, we have a water on earth all. Three phases of water on earth. So there's liquid and gas and ice but on Titan you have liquid methane on the surface, which is really really incredible. It's the only other body in the solar system that we've observed to have liquid on its surface, and these are rivers and lakes and seas of methane and ethane part of the reason why it's got this like, orange Gooby Hayes, around the moon. Yes. So Essay in the methane on those hydrocarbons, that kind of creates it's it's really this I feel like it's really beautiful. It's this kind of soft orangish glow. So it looks a little bit fuzzy whereas other moons that don't have an atmosphere they. They look very sharp but this is very, it's a very muted known. It's. Yeah. Beautiful I think. Yeah. So. Before we go Jennifer we had to leave out a of sweet moons. So we're GONNA do lightning round. I'm going to mention a moon from your list and you give us one moon. Moon Pinions, but moon fax perfect. That sounds great. Okay. Number Forty, one Jupiter's moon ammonia. Yes. So a Mafia is actually the object in our solar system and we aren't one hundred percent. Sure. Why beautiful reds my favorite coloreds promoted to thirty one. Okay Number Twenty Jupiter's Moon Callisto. So Callisto is thought to have the. Surface in the entire solar system. Pretty Sweet. Okay. Number eighteen and nineteen combined also Saturn Moons Atlas and Pan. Atlas and Pan Look like giant Ravioli with aerial around their equator. It's so much fun. Okay. Number Thirteen one of the two moons around Mars Phobos some phobos is a giant rubble pile on track to either fling itself into Mars or split apart in orbit on some missions. Actually proposed a pit stop on the tiny moon on our way to the Red Planet love it. Okay. Number Eleven, Maranda orbiting Uranus. So Miranda is home to Verona Rupe. It's the tallest cliff in the solar system. If you fell off its edge, you would have time to read the newspaper before you hit the ground. Okay.

Changing of the guard in Minn. climate research

"For forty years. Marsili has been a leader in Minnesota climate research and education. You can still hear marks climate incites on NPR news. Friday mornings mark recently retired from the University of Minnesota Department of soil water and climate. The long-term Climate Data and trends generated by climate experts like mark provides significant economic benefit to Minnesota's agricultural and business sectors. Mark successor is Dr Heidi Rupe. She comes to Minnesota from the University of Washington climate impacts group, and we're fortunate to have both mark. And Heidi on the program today mark and Heidi welcome to climate cast good to be with you. Paul. Thanks for having me Paul, lovely. To Talk to you today, mark a personal. Thank you I. You've helped me and so many others do a better job communicating climate science to Minnesota. Tell us what the body of work is here and why it's important to Minnesota farm water and business interests were caretakers of the state climate database where really the body of evidence has been so Welcoming, showing how our climate is changing dramatically. So that's an important asset to help food production system people, but also environmentally to help find sustainable ways to utilize our resources but also preserve them. Heidi let's say I own or work for a Minnesota business. How should I be thinking about climate change risk and opportunity? There's an hugely important role that I think underrepresented in our discussions about climate changes that we do need to prepare and so the pure act of having conversations about climate change and what it means for Your Business for your community for your family. These are really essential conversations that we need to have as we think about our climate change future and what it is quite frankly that we want our future to look like that is the opportunity we can choose to shape. The way we build bridges and roads. The way we design the buildings that we occupy the way that we connect our daily activities to reducing our emissions. So that is to say we choose the future. Mark. Given where we stand with climate changes today what's the biggest message you have for minnesotans about? Climate, change. or it dovetails nicely with what Heidi just talked about. We need to keep the topic of climate change and what it means to our future. Near the top of our list of all the things that we have dialogue about were there were church members someplace or we belong to a community council. OR WE WANNA talk about the future of transportation or energy use or the future public health. The topic of climate change with on all of these things and Heidi when you jump in an elevator with somebody and they find out what you do, what's your elevator speech on how people should be thinking about climate change in the future? It's real. It's us. Scientists agree. It's bad. But there's hope and I add to that there's no time to waste We're at a pivotal juncture in many aspects of our society right now, and how do we build resilient equitable communities climate change be a lens we pass that question through. Merck Sealy and Heidi. Rube. Thanks so much for sharing your perspective on climate cast today. You're welcome. Thanks so much Paul thank you for having me polly look forward to ing and Minnesota in calling at home.

Remembering Kobe Bryant

"The super bowl week addition. It's a bit of a somber mini pod bit of a sombre column on this week before the Super Bowl all heading into super bowl week. Kobe Bryant obviously is everyone knows was killed along with eight others in a helicopter accident in California cornea on Sunday morning. La Time and You know I never met Kobe Bryant. I didn't I didn't cover him. I'm not an NBA. A Guy. But there's just something about this that really really hit me and I was flying down to the Super Bowl in Miami amy. I met my hotel in Miami Beach Right. Now it's about eleven thirty at night on Sunday night but I I I just just all of a sudden I I was working in my seat in the airplane on this Delta flight and I basically everybody just started looking around and you started hearing everybody whispering talking the guy sitting next to me said. Did you see that Kobe. Bryant died in a plane crash and I thought Oh my God there's there's no way But I started looking at the. TV's and he seat bags and yet was true and look there shocking. Deaths all the time I think the thing that made this particularly Horrible is that not only was it Kobe Bryant but it was his daughter thirteen year old daughter. Who from from all appearances had everything to live for was just a bright shiny optimistic great kid and then the other people who died in this in this wreck Families Kobe Bryant obviously was a basketball coach now of his daughter in California. A foreign they were on their way to the game Just I don't know just absolutely terrible thing so I'm just going to tell you a little bit of what I I just wrote a little bit about Kobe Bryant and then I'm going to get into my regular column and we'll start talking football in a second. Here's what I wrote about Brian in summer. Two thousand seventeen first day. The chargers in Los Angeles first day of Training Camp Kobe Bryant came in to talk to the team about playing in Los Angeles. He talked for forty five minutes the majority of time in Q.. And A. Form One player as Bryant. What's it's your favorite book? He said Jonathan Livingston Seagull That book is about a seagull old. Jonathan Livingston Seagull who wants more out of life than swooping down and fighting his fellows for food. Jonathan Livingston Seagull a nonconformist first who wants to perfect his flying technique and wants to branch out into other passions. It's not what the chargers expected but it was great. Brian's point the way to be great is not to be in the pack but to strive to be better every he day of your life. It's cool you're in the NFL. But now what are you gonNA do. How great can you become chargers? There's VP of communications. Josh Rupe. Rick told me I think half the team went out and bought Jonathan Livingston Seagull that day after something so senseless Bryant nate others. Dying in helicopter crashed Sunday near La. I prefer to remember how Great Bryant the player player was and how Great Bryant the father and person was becoming. He was trying to be Jonathan Livingston Seagull in his next life. So let's take that from the life and times of Kobe Bryant.

The Methylation Diet with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald

"So some really interesting things to talk about today. And as I mentioned we're GonNa talk about relation. And why don't we just start with with some bedrock information for Are Lay people and practitioners about you know what is methylation uh-huh and if you could just give us a basic overview of it is and how it works Yasser. Listen if you've got any serious sort of folk history geeks It was actually we just the body it was just we were D- Our ability to mesylate compounds To detoxify them was first discovered in eighteen. Eighty seven if anybody needs a cocktail party factoid. But it was it was long after that before the methylation methylation cycle was actually characterized SEM SEO. Methionine was discovered. You know it was in the twentieth century. When when all of that was teased out so methylation is really quite simply as you know either were putting a a a methyl group with his car which is carbon three hydrogens either were? We're I by adding it to a compound or we we are. We're removing it from a compound or we are producing ESA Dennis on a seal methionine. which is the cofactor that carries that methyl group that can be put on compounds? So that's fun. That's what methylation is and it's everywhere you know it's it's in Internet Lord says Those those those folks talking a lot about methylation say it's happening in every cell all of the time crime and I would argue that. It's probably pretty close to that. I mean it's interesting to me that we use this addition of a methyl group Rupe or The methylation cycle which interfaces as you know intimately with the full late vitamer cycle insult curation. But you know it's interesting that we use these. He's in such important fundamental Processes you know body wide just to give you a couple of ideas nick of its importance. Three of the four DNA bases require a functioning fully slash methylation cycle for production three of the four basis and that fourth base which has cited scene is the base that Indiana methylation gets methylated. So Oh for D for for gene expression fundamentally for gene expression. We have to have good math elation and for DNA repair. We need good mcmath elation so just think about it to make DNA to regulate DNA expression to repair DNA all requires really you know high functioning math elation and sue just as I've been into this more and more and more right from an evolutionary perspective I I just ponder How interesting it is that we just we use it everywhere so and then additionally a lot of the folks interested in methylation know for instance that we're detoxifying hormones toxins oxen's Histamine Clarence neurotransmitter synthesis phospholipids at the US? Like you know choline is a really methyl donor a demanding process. We use it to to Make creating you know in in in Muscle Energy In you know in kind of on and on a stem cell. So here's another really interesting thing going. Back to the EPA genetic regulation. The regulation of DNA expression are stem. Cell fate is determined by our DNA methylation patterns so Camino Genesis Genesis and Embryo Genesis High methylation activity times very much. So so are you going to be a brain cell or a lung cell or a Gut Sell Etcetera Etcetera Sarah. Although stem those pluripotent stem cell roles are defined through DNA methylation patterns And prior to that you know the DNA methylation Asian patterns from Mom and dad you know in the sperm and egg those are mostly wiped clean and the new patterns are laid down. They're not completely wiped I to clean and so the Herod Ability of DNA methylation is actually established in this really early time and I know you're paying attention in this Serena how much you're focusing but I know that you're a really smart guy with a broad area of interest. So you know. The the the heritable the EPA genetic Connecticut ability is Is In this arena. The fact that we don't completely erase all of the DNA methylation patterns from mom and dad or grandma. AM ON GRANDPA and generations prior and they're carried forward so it's just it's extraordinary. This whole areas has become quite interesting. Today I'm going to stop for a minute. I mean so with with so many connections to to methylation since it's kind of at the the core of of what's going on the sell. It has to be difficult at times to figure out if it is truly connected to the patient's condition and good question. How how do you approach was the need or you know the the interest in looking deeper into methylated in particular patients? Are there any particular conditions not sendo. Well that's a really good question arguably we all need to be addressing methylation Dan and arguably we wanna be doing it really upstream. So there's you know there are certain times we're GONNA be leaning more heavily like you know pre preconception. Planning you know when you know women who are pregnant we we want to be leaning on it more heavily I know there are host of conditions nations that you know some of us in in in our arena have associated with elation defects more. Obviously it probably the best evidence is around depression and You know other neuropsychiatric conditions certainly in autism we we we comments commonly method methylation defects. So I ah but I want to. I guess I want to say that my my so a big practice exchanger for me has been thinking much more upstream and globally about methylation in really putting a lot of attention on EPA genetic methylation and I want to give you a little bit of the backstory neck. Interrupt me if I'm going on too long but let me just talk about that and that I think this will kind of elucidate where I'm coming from. So you know back in the lab you know years ago we were looking at methylation all the time looking at amino acids associated with the methylation cycle. Of course we always look at home assisting at Sarah we're looking at self Eurasian and so we've been thinking about it for a long time and then we started to layer and single nucleotides polymorphisms and you know in the hopes that we would get sort of a more for a deeper more useful clinical picture arguably. I don't know we we didn't. I don't know that that that. Mta chaffar status always always lens much clarity to a patient's condition. I don't know that it you know I I would say it's actually the exception that it really game changes how we approach patients nations So we had the organic acids and the various biomarkers there. We layered in the single nuclear type polymorphism and you know maybe a little benefit not that much. So I flash forward EPA GENETIC RESEARCH STARTS really really pouring out over maybe the last eight eight years or so. I mean extraordinarily so and for me in about twenty twelve twenty thirteen enough studies on epigenetics and cancer. Were moving across my desk that I realized I needed to dive in like I needed to start to understand. Stay on this and a deeper way. Honestly you know it was yet another. Oh Mix investigation and I had a little bit of comics fatiguing at that time and I was like Aw You know here's just another really complicated kind of Arcane physiologic processes going on that. I need to understand dammit but there I did dive. And and the bulk of the research is in the epigenetics cancer and by-in-large you know the most important genetic mark appears here's to be DNA methylation as I unpacked it. It became a practice game changer for me. So the background in it is that in cancer. So the tumor number micro environment is very effective. At harnessing our own EPI genetic machinery intake taking Over DNA methylation for its own nefarious ends. So when we hyper mentally a promoter region of a gene that gene is effectively turned off when we hypo methylated when we win those when either there is an absence method groups on The the gene need or those methyl groups are removed. That gene is allowed to express so the tumor micro environment can very efficiently hyper methylated tumor suppressor genes and so the first question for me as a as a functional medicine doctor looking at methylation prescribing vitamins. HIGH-DOSE B twelve full eight. All of the time and was well. Geez you know. Do I need to stop doing that. In my patients who I'm suspecting cancer in or who are in an age range of an increased risk or who have cancer etc these. These stopped me in my tracks. These papers that were pouring out hyper methylated and you know could could who'd supporting or pushing methylation for a word have some kind of an impact and it turns out. There's an a suggestion in the literature that perhaps perhaps it could now has that stopped me from prescribing vitamins. When my patients need them no not at all but I began to wonder about it an upstream approach to math elation? There's nothing in the literature so wit. Let me actually back up and say HYPO. methylation of the DNA so global global Haifa methylation of all the DNA is something that happens as we age all of us are moving towards less global methylation but then there are these regions of hyper methylation where we don't want them it's like are it's like our DNA methylation becomes disordered as a part of the aging process and you can see that it it underscores all these complex chronic diseases including auto immunity. You had mentioned that your audience tends to be interested in that you seeing these disordered patterns happening putting in all these diseases of old age So globally it's an it's low methylation but these pockets of imbalance hyper methylation good genes being shut down like nerf to tumor suppressor genes and on and on so so my first question was you know. Can we effectively move upstream upstream and prescribe a a methyl donor rich Diet and looking in the literature as you know there's there are no studies on Greens on Leafy Greens cancer. So we know these are safe. You know beats beat rich Diet and cancer really not out there even liver which is a methyl donor superfood you. You know. There's no sociation unless maybe eight really really lousy liver With causing cancer so we saw that we could actually push athlete with a diet and beyond safe if grounds

"The results of a new study suggesting those who smoke marijuana maybe better motivated to get to the gym. Here's correspondent Jim Rupe? The next time. You see folks really working out at the gym. You might ask people on the study out of the university of Colorado boulder interviewed six hundred people over twenty one who lived in states where recreational cannabis is legal it found that people who smoked pot either before or after hitting the gym or even both said they worked out more. Some even said the medicinal aspects of marijuana help with recovery for Mason pays that come with a workout. It also suggests though that if you combine the two choose low risk exercises. "Experimenting with random episodes. I'm like, this is great. Can I just push a button? And it takes what it knows about me and throws up an episode of the TV show that a at thinks I will like and be is like from an intolerable planet or or something like new girl were. Yeah. There's a story arc, but it's not that important or maybe it knows. I've already watched it. So it's okay to just throw a popular episode. I want that lean back experienced some time. And then it'll show you a random episode of that particular show. I don't know. So this isn't as appealing as I thought it would be for me. And so how you laid it out would have been acceptable. You know, but just, you know, pick a show and watch a random no way because I can think of a show like the away. Then I watch it on Netflix that if I you know, gotten to like the middle episode. It'd just destroyed the whole buildup would not we're five wouldn't work, you know. And so yeah, so I get it. So it would have to have some caveats as to what type shows like a like a new girl or something like that. That's funny. There's no build up between the episodes. You can just watch it. And like, oh just wanted to let me go check out the rest. It's interesting this came up because just yesterday there's the there's a series on Netflix, love robots and death or something. Yeah. Love death robot's saying Thalji series. I didn't think much of it was popped up. It wasn't until my daughter was going through. She clicked on a YouTube clip of that. It's okay. That's really interesting. I I actually went back to Netflix to watch like for for different episodes, and it would never seen it. If I didn't get a taste of it. I and they think this would be kind of geared for people like me who are a little overwhelmed by the twice as but don't necessarily have enough time to kind of sit there and decide and delve into like, oh, let's see what this is about. You have previews turned off or something because do but those previews don't necessarily explained like especially for an anthology series. Like love death, robots are whatever the title is. I don't get a I've I've seen that. But I don't get a sense of it. And it's in that same way Sears. I'd like you to clip was more effective than Netflix his own. Yes, emotional. Yes. I literally watched a sixty second clip on YouTube in it got me interested more in the series than their little pre pre previ- Rupe? Roll. Well. And then there are people like me who I am also crippled by choice. But I'm just like all pay for you to TV of the precious went up because sometimes I just wanna. Put on the National Geographic channel. And just show me what you're gonna show me. I'm sitting here already the equivalent of the I'm feeling lucky button for Netflix. Yeah. Well, and I think that that's what we're going for here. It's not exactly that. But that's it's kind of like, yeah.

France vows to rebuild after Notre Dame fire

"Nine. French president Emmanuel Macron has estimated don't take five years maybe a little longer to rebuild Notre Dame cathedral after that fire that occurred Monday. However collect conflicting reports have come out saying that it could take closer to maybe fifteen years. This comes in the middle of the Macron's political troubles such as the large protests about rising prices of gas, president Macron speaking, not just to the French people. But to the world pledged. Saddam even will be busy. Sunday's must be done in five years. We can point to some that's quite a bold and aggressive pledge any forty year. Megan Rupe, my daughter who's lived and worked in Paris for more than five years now and lives near the cathedral says the estimates reported in the local newspapers on local television news suggests it will take much longer decades the shortest time line. She heard as the day went on in Paris, maybe ten to fifteen years, and this makes sense because in that same speech mccrone also said. Let's be willing to. The estimated time line is the second shock wave to hit Parisians the first the fire itself. Of course, the second not so much the timeline. But what the time line means? It'll be a different time for my my children. Now, the whole skyline of Paris is going to look different for quite a while skyline. That was for more than eight hundred years is changed maybe four decades. So what does this mean for Macron if within five years, the cathedral's mutt restored? Megan says, it's hard to say given the political troubles. Their president has had. In an out of that happening over fourteen fifteen week, June is French for yellow vest, the yellow vest protests that started out over an increase in gas prices in his grown into an entire movement of people criticizing thrown for being out of touch with the poor and middle class. And actually last night. He was supposed to address the kitchen of the human. And then he had to move it. Because of you know, join the toilet incident did his presence and his words have a positive impact on his tremendous political career. I politically, correct. Particularly moved by it. But they weren't unhappy with it just that that was the correct response to what was going on in that. They appoint that we've done at the filing of this report. There had been no update on his approval rating. But the local press is reporting what Megan just told us. It may take the fulfillment of the promise to rebuild Notre Dame within five years to endear macaroni to all the citizens of

Who should take the hit when identity theft occurs?

"I live in Berkeley, California. It's a peaceful place for an American city in twenty years. I've never so much notice the police station never occurred to me that I even needed to know where it was. Yes. Zoe. But now here I am inside the place surrounded by cinder block walls, in pictures of legendary police officers in across the table from me, there's a living legend officer Joe do. So I'm going to tell you what happened to me. Okay. And why I'm here so beginning last year, we started to get calls at eight in the morning from CitiGroup big back. And I was getting the kids out the door for breakfast in the phone ring. And this happened ten times twenty times three times fifty times. I mean, it was just like harassment, and they said, I the money, and it was absolutely bizarre. Because I didn't never any any business with CitiGroup. I mean, no credit cards. No, nothing. But he said we had like fifteen thousand dollars of outstanding loans. I just wanna say that again. So you hear it city group said I owed them fifteen thousand dollars. And so Finally, I said look quit calling us just driving crazy in the mornings, and whatever they stop. Calling. Okay. The next thing. That happens is I got a note from American Express saying my credit score has collapsed because I have Wellstone a debt to city group. So American Express call me and says we're gonna put a limit on your account because you're like, oh, scores declined. And I call them and said, well, how's this happen at a, you know, this a credit aggregate name experien- has sent a report saying you've got some bad debts. I didn't even know what experience was or what it did as it turns out there a bunch of companies that make their money by gathering up, whatever anyone Bank or credit card company has to say about you. And then spreading the word to the others. So that if one Bank thinks you owe them money all the others. See you as a problem? Experience one of those companies and odd become one of those problems someone claiming to be me opening a credit card account with CitiBank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. And he gave as his address street in Miami. But it's a street that doesn't even exist credit. Limit was fifteen thousand somehow he managed to borrow sixteen thousand four hundred and six dollars and repaint. None of it fifteen thousand four hundred and six dollars when I called experience to say how come you have this on my credit report? They said, well, we can't do anything about it to city group said you of this money. So I called city and city roof said they didn't know who I was and at no record of my social security number. We was just a mass. I was I was in stuck in on hold for hours. And they gave me no joy. I mean, no joy at all. Finally, experien- tells me that I need to file an identity theft comp-. Plate with the FTC the Federal Trade Commission, which I did. And they said I had to go come to the police station and file report for them to take seriously my claim that my entity had been stolen. So to summarize myself, just they're a big New York Bank hands fifteen sixteen grand to someone pretending to be me. Michael Lewis, then some credit agency broadcasts, a total. I about my behavior. And now I need to drive down to my local police station and bother a local cop. So that's why I'm here. I wanna file a police report for identity theft. And I wanna ask you a couple of questions about before. I do it. The first is how often do you all have people filing identity reports with the police very frequently. Also, it's not this is not where it's not completing common owner. But that isn't the question. I most wanted an answer to I'd been doing another question for so long. It's almost hard to put it into words. I mean, just as a lot. Horseman officer. Does it not strike you as strange that? I've never had any do with either one of these parties, and they wrote me into this. And and it's my problem. All of a sudden, it seems to me that CitiGroup should be filing some sort of complaint with the police, not me, and I shouldn't have to deal with this at all. It's very odd that its frame this way, the whole notion of identity theft noticed I'm still me for the first time officer la- do is looking a little dubiously. Like, I'm crossing some wine. Like, I'm gonna start asking him for his opinions about animal rights or about the local native American burial ground, somehow wound up under the parking lot of a fish restaurant cups. Don't control the rules of the game. They just enforce them. The very idea that I should have to spend a minute having to deal with this seems just a little odd. I mean, if you take it out of the financial sector, and you say I managed to persuade Zoe that I'm Audrey in. I get her lemme ten grand. Arteries, my producer on this episode Zoe is my associate producer. They're here at the station with me recording just standing there in their headphones. Expressionless dead. I'd. Is always not gonna have any ability to disrupt my life or get me. I mean, it's an odd thing that the financial system has now put this sort of strain on police resources. It seems to me. So let me put it as a question. If people are coming in filings reports taking your time and all the rest is never struck. You that seem to little crazy to have the police in the middle of this to answer it. It's interesting in the fact that it's a different type of victimization, right? I don't think of myself as a victim. But if you want me to be one, I want you to be. But it turns out I have to be the victim. At least if I want him to file his report, if I'm not a victim that I'm to blame for whatever fake Michael Lewis has been doing at his fake address. Here's the funny thing I feel victimized not by whoever that guy dude wasn't Miami. But by city Rupe like they present themselves as someone who has been victimized by essentially, my of inability to prevent anybody from stealing my identity. But really if they'd never done the dopey thing in the first place, we wouldn't even be here. And that's the thing that that kinda gets under my skin is that the financial sector has figured out a way to shift the burden of this problem onto people who have nothing to do with the problem. Let me get you a casing, right? I've never had a case number. Can you put me on the boarding generate numbers for thirty five to nineteen? Numbers me talk. Just like another language. Six zero one six. Thank you. Like, I. So I'm gonna give you a business karma the case number and also many give you a victim of identity theft family. I already said this, but I'm the real Michael Lewis, and this is against the rules a show about the decline of the human referee in American life, and what that's doing to our idea of

Dyson relocates its HQ on the eve of Brexit

"British businessman, James Dyson has long trumpeted Britain's economic potential global stage once it leaves the EU. So why is he decided to move his business headquarters to the other side of the world shila Milton discusses this with Michael Pula? I'm Peter Campbell. Michael for those who don't know. What's the story behind Dyson is rise? And how successful is it the company? So so James Dyson has been working on vacuum cleaners for a very long time. And he was developing his own bagless types in the one thousand nine hundred eighty s and he had an agreement with the Japanese company to license his designed to them. But he struck out on his own founded, the Dyson company in one thousand nine hundred eighty two and that's when he launched his first own branded vacuum cleaners, and they became very successful and sales grew very rapidly. And this was largely on two factors. It was the performance of the suction which they avoid claim to superior its competitors. And that is largely stew with the engineering the machines that bike lists. And they use something called cyclonic principle, which is the way the Aspin's inside the chamber, and they say the over the long run the vacuum clean. It doesn't lose suction. Unlike his peers, but the other aspect that's really. Attracted people is the designers. That's the way it looks very modern sleek. And in the wake of the a lot of other vacuum cleaner manufacturers have aped or imitated aspects of the design. So they became very successful in vacuum cleaners and since then the branched out into other consumer product areas a lot of people will be familiar with its hand-driers that you have in bathrooms in large buildings. But then there's also other areas that have gone into like lighting, for example, the now do air purifiers and hairdryers it's all quite high end got quite big price tags on these products. And if we look at the financials, that's amounts of how successful they've been last year, the revenues went up twenty eight percent to four point four billion pounds while the prophets broke the one billion Mark for the first time and they Rupe? One third. So as a result of all of this, so James has become one of Britain's most recognized businessmen and also celebrated entrepreneur, peach, I think Dyson recently nights moving into self driving cars is. That the real reason for the decision to move so Dyson wants to stop marching electric cars from twenty twenty one some of the movie self driving, some of them will be driven. But this for the company is enormously ambitious move they to spend more than two billion pounds on the project, and they've already said they're going to build the cause in Singapore, and the causa to be developed, partly in Singapore, and for many people if you look at the timing of the decision to locate in Singapore it fits with the fact that the businesses going to expand massively and suggests as previously said that if the car venture is successful it will grow to dwarf all the other things that Dyson does. Now, there's two particularly attractive parts of Singapore apart from the fact that it means that Dyson management can be closest to its largest operation in its new factory. And these are Singapore's rules around financial disclosure and also Singapore's treatment of patents and intellectual property. Now Dyson is going to develop lots of intellectual property in this new series of cause. Already has some technology from its other products that will be using a no such as electric Motors. But it also is like to develop lot of its own new technology if that is made in Singapore. Then it's likely that those patents will be able to stay in Singapore and will be taxed in Singapore. And the other issue is disclosure suggestions as previously criticized. The fact that privately held UK companies have to file accounts to companies house that means anyone can go and look at them and see how that during moving the corporate headquarters to Singapore means that the holding company will find its accounts in Singapore. Those are less transparent less easily access than accounts in the UK. And particularly as Dyson is about to embark on this very expensive very ambitious project to move into. 'cause it's likely that the business which is highly profitable at the moment is going to see its profits. At least dip in the short term. It may have to increase spending in the project getting into making cars is very expensive. We've seen new entrance such as tesla struggle with this many of the new Chinese companies trying to. Get into electric vehicles of struggled and faced serious cost overruns and delays. So if Dyson does have to spend more money that it expects on this project, if the venture does push the company into a loss in the short term, then being in Singapore will mean that that is not as visible as it would have been if it had remained in the u k now Dyson has not said publicly that these are two of the factors in its decision to move to Singapore. But it's likely going hand in hand with the massive growth expects in this fair coop business that those at least were contributing factors.
