"The defensive talent, not only this draft, but at least for the next two. Smaller sightings, but ones that I think at least add some veteran competence. But in this draft, they need to rebuild that past defense. The secondary, I would say interior pass rush. And then beyond that, I actually think on the other side of the ball, I would look to the interior offensive line, one of the hits from the Mayo era was Colton Miller at left tackle. Jermaine Illinois, they brought back to play on the right side, he's decent as well, but whether you're talking about Jimmy Garoppolo whose performance has dipped under pressure over the years or potentially a rookie quarterback, maybe next year, you need to fix this offensive line on the inside. So that's another area I think the Raiders should look to target in the draft because it is important for that offense to function. You see their picks on the screen right there. You think about the impact that he made down the stretch for them, so they're trying to get back to the Super Bowl, right? They're trying to continue on with form. You also got to think that they're going to have to sign a contract for Joe burrow here relatively soon. We'll get to that later on in the show. You know, what do the Bengals need to do to get back to the Super Bowl this season? Yeah, for me, it's all about young players on the defense stepping up. I'm not worried about this offense. We'll see what happens with Mixon and Jonah Williams. Office is going to be fine. The defense, however, has kind of been the unsung hero of this team over the last two years as they've gone to the championship. I mean, how many times have we talked about their adaptive nature, the bespoke game plans that halftime adjustments they've made and so much of that has been contingent upon the play, the intelligence and experience of Jesse Bates and von bell that safety duo. So now you need Dax hill, who's coming up in a second year to step up, cam Taylor Brit, cornerbacks in his second year, he signed Nick Scott, who was a young safety from the rams, but Lou Anna rumba was really got his work cut out for him this year on the back end, especially to pull off the sort of defensive performances we've associated with him over the last couple of years against the best offenses in the league. I went into this thinking I was going to talk tight ends and maybe them adding Michael Mayer, musgrove, or Dalton kincaid, but to the defensive point that Mina's making. I think one of the more unique things about Cincinnati's defense is how smart their back 7 is. And how much they work in unison, the lying that happens. The landmarks that go on, the verbal and non verbal communications, the cells and the lies in disguise and to mean his point. I think they're one of those really unique defenses that the intellect or the football intelligence is equally, if not more important than the talent. You know what I'm saying? To her point, Lou Anna rumo can't do all those things unless the players are smart because this defense will take a step back if they don't have that. That's just how they're built and if they don't have that and or add it the intelligence is such a big part in this draft process for them, finding those defensive players with the smarts. You also think about how they made a lot of those adjustments in the second half of games. How do young players respond at halftime having to make a quick adjustment? Like, this is what we're doing now to take advantage of our match ups. All right, let's look to the other side of the ball, Adam, because tackle Jonah Williams requested a trade after the Bengals signed Orlando Brown junior, what more can you tell us about that situation? Well, first and foremost damage and tight ends in the Bengals officially announced that they saw an irv Smith junior today to a one year contract. The former Vikings tight end and he's a talented guy that can help that offense. So there's an added tie down. Now the question becomes, as you mentioned, Laura Jonah Williams. And what happens? Ever since they signed Orlando Brown junior Jonah Williams has requested a trade. And he's done that for a couple of reasons. Number one, they obviously are in the last year of the deal with Jonah Williams. They're not going to be able to afford to re sign him. They want him to change positions to move to right tackle when he's played the left tackle position. So there are a whole host of factors. He'd rather just move on and not play there and we'll see whether or not the Bengals trade him. Now, if they lose him after this year, they probably would get a third or fourth round compensatory draft pick in 2025. So they had to come up with an offer this year that would be better, which would be the equivalent of say a fourth 5th, 6th round pick. This year, so as the draft gets closer, you're going to see more and more conversations regarding Jonah Williams and we'll see whether or not they move them, but he doesn't want to be there anymore. He wants to move on and they've signed a replacement in Orlando Brown junior opting to put their resources there. He's got a $12.6 million salary for this year that they could then use for players like Joe burrow and T Higgins if that's what they wanted. A lot of people could use Jonah Williams too. So something to look out for either way. By the way, only Mina kinds have come up with bespoke game plan, which Shan is not similar to your suits that you get from the loss of sound rash. And we have Marcus spears as well as field Yates, Ryan Clark, joining us to Dan. We start with you. Your initial reaction to now knowing that Derek Carr is a free agent. Two teams come to mind the New York Jets in the Carolina Panthers. I'll remind everybody of two things. In 2021, Derek Carr midseason was an MVP candidate and ask yourself this. When was the last time this league had a top ten top 12 caliber player at that position? That was a free agent. I just love the beauty of him being a free and clear free agent, do. Like the opportunity to be courted to make a decision based on where you think you can win right away, but also get compensated. Derek Carr is a really good quarterback in this league. You can win with Derek Carr. I think you need pieces around him, but that's majority of the guys in this league, but very rarely, to your point, do guys get a chance to be free agents in this league and the fact that he's a quarterback with success, phenomenal. Send Derrick Carr said, Las Vegas Raiders, you not about to get no picks from me. I'm gonna walk into this thing where I'm free and clear and I get the opportunity to vet these teams as they'll be vetting me. He's a top 15 talent at the position probably higher and now he'll get a chance to find a team that matches, but also wants him to be on that team. I think this is great for Derek Carr. And timing is everything in life. No one likes to get fired, but worth noting that Derek Carr does not have to wait until the NFL's new league year begins in the middle of March. He is free to sign with the team right this second, so other quarterbacks that could be traded or free agents like Jimmy Garoppolo still have to wait a month. Derek Carr is a head start on the field. His courting process can begin immediately, Laura. That's an excellent point filled yeats and we saw Adam Schefter's tweet that according to his sources, the saints and Panthers expected to be some of the teams interested. We'll get to this later on with exact destinations and more information around Derek R, but more breaking news today. The 2023 coaching cycle now complete the latest news is the Cardinals have hired eagle defensive coordinator Jonathan gannon. So the eagles lose both their OC and D.C. on the same day. We'll talk about The O.C. in just a little bit. The cardinals finally have a more complete idea of their outlook going forward with Kyler Murray and a team that's been in flux. The cardinals are clearly looking to upgrade their defense with the hire of ganon. Last season, Arizona allowed the second most points in the league and ranked near the bottom in both yards per play in defensive efficiency. As for ganon's defense in Philadelphia, the eagles ranked top ten in all those areas, including first in yards per plate, Phil, if you go to a Super Bowl if you're gannon and then you're a head coach two days later, how did this all go down? Yeah, quite a whirlwind, Laura. And should be noted that teams can not hire a head coach from another team when he's under contract until after his season was over, so the cardinals had to wait for Jonathan ginnen, but I'm told that interest intensified in ganon early last week Laura. This was sort of a late entry into the party for Jonathan gannon, but he gets this job, the final opening, we'll talk about the other opening that was filled recently as well. Began and takes over a team that is in a bit of a potential crossroad, sort of a retooling of the roster with Kyler Murray, potentially out to begin next season during his ACL recovery and a team that finished with a third worst record in the NFL, a new GM, a new head coach in place. This is about looking towards the future and not expecting this is going to be a one year make it right rebuild. Dan, how do you like this hire for Kyler Murray? That'll work. This is an uphill battle or uphill climb for both Kyler Murray and Jonathan gannon. We know collar got his money last year, okay? Jonathan gannon is stepping into a situation in a new general manager in Monty Austin fort. This roster is not nearly as good as it was two years ago. They went to the playoffs against the rams. He's got to get healthy. I think the biggest challenge for Jonathan ganon is getting Kyler Murray to believe you as the head coach can allow me to be kind of myself, but demand that I get better to be the quarterback of this football team. It ain't little games anymore. It's time to grow up in this league. That's real. It's time to grow up. And Jonathan ganon has got to be the leader that pulls that out of Kyler Murray. A soul assisted DB coach DB coach and then defensive coordinator of a really good unit that had success this year in Philadelphia. To your point, Dan, we'll find out how you manage men. Like that's what head coaching is about. Like, we know that these guys have acumen exes in the old wires and we understand that they may have success in other areas, but they experience that I thought was needed in Arizona was a guy to come in with a little bit of stature and I'm not sure like this hire obviously Arizona likes Jonathan gannon and Jonathan did a good job with the Philadelphia Eagles this year from a defensive standpoint, but I thought this job should have been dedicated to somebody that's got some cache and stock in this league. Because to your point, the old John again and number one job is to get kyla Murray to be one of the 53 guys. Like we talked about all season alone. I want to see how that relationship materializes. You can get better on defense, but if you quarterback ain't listening to you or don't respect the people in the building, it don't matter how good you are on that side of the ball. Well, I think that's a piece of it too, which is why I thought luana rumo, who was a little older coach, had been in locker rooms for a bit of a time longer than Jonathan gannon would be a good person for this job where you get someone that was a former head coach and maybe none of those guys actually wanted these jobs. But here is what strikes me. You have Jonathan gannon who does a good job, but who is thoroughly out coached in the second half of this football game in a Super Bowl and Andy Reid shows you that he isn't necessarily up to the level that you need to be to win a championship. And then we see on the other side, a guy like Eric bending me who's been to 5 AFC championships. Also one, two super bowls and he's not necessarily up to snub to lead a locker room according to the executives according to the owners. Let's go back to last year with a guy like Raheem Morris, who was a young head coach in Tampa Bay. And now worked his way on both offense and defense and you actually win the Super Bowl with your defense coming up with the main stops against the sensing 90 Bengals who were seemingly unstoppable last year to win the Super Bowl. I don't want to be the guy that always has to bring up that black coaches are continually overlooked. I'm the guy that wants to bring up what are these other coaches doing that the African American and minority coaches aren't doing. That's allowing them to get jobs. Because it can no longer be about winning championships because neither Shane steichen, nor Jonathan gannon did that, but here we are two days after the game. That they lost by the way and they now have head coaching jobs. All I'm asking is, make it make sense. It's an important point RC and we'll continue to bring it up here on this show. "But if that's the case going into Sunday, you know, I would worry a little bit more about Nick Bosa, who's just going to, I mean, you can just demolish the pocket in half the time with half the efficiency. Or half the effort that it would take someone like Dexter Lawrence to do. So I don't know. And yes, Jalen hurts. It was a good stat by ESPN stats and info did 6 design runs in the first half of that of the Giants game, which was the most second most. I think he's ever done in a game, but if you look at those runs, they were all like these trap runs where what they were doing was they were kind of like inviting Dexter and kind of a bunch of the Giants best offensive lineman in one direction and then down blocking them. So there wasn't a lot of guys. I mean, they were basically like, okay, we'll take Jalen hurts chances with Jalen Smith, like a veteran Jalen Smith, we're not really that worried about that. So they kept him away from, I think, some of the guys who could cause a genuine issue, you know? Yeah. Yeah, and look, the forty-niners are, again, just uniquely good at the second level. Specifically Fred Warner, yeah, I don't really know who you necessarily isolate and attack in that defense because they're all really good. The secondaries, maybe not great, but you know, he also have to deal with Nick Bosa. Yeah, let's go to the AFC here. We talked a little bit about Patrick Mahomes and the ankle issue on the Monday morning show. It's gonna be a thing. And I wonder, I wonder how much easier is the word I'll throw out, though that's not exactly the best word in the world here. But how much easier it's going to be for the Bengals to prepare for this when you're not like the Jaguars were kind of adjusting on the fly and doing it with the young defense at that point. The Bengals know that Patrick Rome is going to have limited mobility and certainly they're a team that it's a veteran defense. They have basically been able to take drastically different approaches in different times of within a game and it just seems like this is a really good match up here for Bengals defense versus cheese offense. It's a really good matchup. I mean, you're just not going to be able to and I mean the one good thing about having Andy Reid is a head coach to see successfully in the past run a very quick strike West Coast the offense. He has the receivers to do it. He has the quarterback to do it, but it's just not what the chiefs have done in the past. Historically. And so because you can't can not put Patrick Mahomes in a situation where you put them in last year where he's going to try to freelance enough to get guys open and then by then you have Sam Hubbard and Trey hendrickson just sitting on him. And so that's not a possibility. This is going to be a three and out, three and out, three and out, three steps. And out. And I don't know how good they are at doing that. Because I think the Bengals are really good. I mean, they're going to cover people. They're really fast. And they have cornerbacks who get after the ball and who can jump those short passes. Yeah, I mean, we've seen, for the most part, these teams have played high score games, except for really that AFC title game last year when, again, Lou Anna rumo went just super coverage heavy in the second half. Dropping 7 dropping 8 in a lot of cases. And Patrick Mahomes just did not react to it well. Man, I don't know, it's just whatever Andy Reid gets paid a lot of money to figure these things out. And they're going to have to figure something out here. Against the Bengals with a very limited guy under center who is usually literally capable of doing anything you could imagine him doing. And yeah, we've certainly talked quite a bit about Joe burrow on the show over the last two years. The chiefs defense and this has been the case seemingly each of the last like four or 5 years. They've gotten better as the year has gone on. They don't match up particularly well though with and no one matched up that well with the Bengals weapons here. And again, this is a Bengals offense that just, it's an old school Tom Brady type off. Read the mail before the snap, let's get out in our spread look and Joe burrow will figure out pre snap and if he's wrong, he'll extend the play and get it done post snap. Yeah. And the best vintage patriots offense is right. It's just so it can be so brutal. It can be so punishing and Chris Jones is going to help. I mean, he's going to be The X Factor in this game. Maybe a little George Carla. Gary. I mean, it's up to them, right? They're going to have to stop the run. They're going to have to beat up on Jamar chase and T Higgins and but it's just there's just too much, there's too much offense and there's too much defense. And Cincinnati for me. Like, I just think, sure, is there 5 out of ten chances that the chiefs, I don't know, I would say three and every ten times they would play in these particular circumstances. I would pick the chiefs. Do you think that's fair? Yes. I think that's fair. Three out of every ten. So sure. Because we're Nate silver hedging right now, right? I love that. It was before, I think it was before the 2016 election when, I mean, this is not a political statement, but I think that there was a large portion of America that was somewhat terrified of everything that was going on. And I just loved if you went to his website, he's like the editor, the chief political predictor guy for 5 38 and ABC and there was like a graphic that was just like, Trump has about a field goal kick percent chance of winning. What was it? The chances of Trump winning are about the chances of like whatever. Give me a good like Robbie Gould missing missing a 45 yard field goal. And I was like, oh God, like that's. That's, you know, that could happen. And again, that's in a political statement. I'm just saying it was funny that that election seemed to be of such consequence. And then they compared it to the chances of an NFL kicker missing a field goal. It's like, it's sort of like the doomsday clock, right? It's like, okay, yes. We're all going to die and burn up if this little hand ticks closer to midnight. It's that kind of thing. But in this sense, it's the sports. It's just sports. We're doing a coin flip, but just for sports. It is but imagine Robbie gold was on your fantasy team. Then it has. Then it has that gravity to it. That's true. Now we're talking. That affects me. So I have to ask you, Connor. What's the one game you were wrong in your playoff predictions this year? "So high sprained ankles overrated. That's your take. I think high ankle sprains are a big deal. I think mahomes is a bigger deal. I just think the player is too good for me to discount him in an AFC championship game at home against a team that he absolutely a 100% unequivocally really wants to be. What is your matchup of the game? Yeah, matchup was Lou and rumo against this, this chief's offense. You go and you look at how Lewis performed against elite quarterbacks. He's so good. He's one of the best. But like I said against the chiefs, it is overstated. He's only had one game out of the threes played against mahomes in which he had a negative EPA. Per drop back. And even that AFC championship game they won in the first half mahomes was killing them. I mean, it took a weird end of the first half Eric the enemy fight on the sideline to even like get to the spot where now the game plan in the second half was working. And in that game plan, they ran a ton of rush three drop 8, right, played a ton of zone, play with quarterback spies, really hassle mahomes. They didn't do that this past year, right? You can't just like do one thing against mahomes and it's his kryptonite and he won't figure it out. You have to continue to try to stay on the cutting edge. And that's just so hard to do against the quarterback as talented as mahomes. And then also a coaching staff was talented. The other little sneaky matchup in there is Trey Henderson against Orlando Brown. PSF told me today, Trey hendrickson win rate against Orlando Brown specifically, pass rush is 25%. That's an astronomical number. It's like the second biggest number for any passwords against Orlando Brown. The game winning Joseph osi sack and that week 13 game, they rushed three players all with the goal of getting and they had like 6 guys on the line all the goal of getting one one on one and it was Joseph ossi against Orlando Brown. So if you're in a key passing situation, cheese fans watch 57 on the left side because that's exactly who the Bengals want to go after. Before we talk in detail about the eagles diners game, I mean, what is your key matchup for that game? Then we'll go big picture. Can you match it for that game is Jalen hurts quarterback run against the D'amico Ryan's running defense? And we can get into the numbers on that. But that's where I've convinced myself on this week. I was, I believe the niners were gonna win early this week, and now as of Thursday, I'm a fishy pic in the eagles. This has been the big thing that's changed my mind. Really? That's it. Not the 7th round pick playing in his first tough road game, really ever. I mean, whenever I prep the niners, I tend to look past the quarterback at the Kyle Shanahan, at the head coach. I don't get moved too much by the guy that's playing quarterback for Kyle. I tend to care about Kyle and what he does. It's really interesting. We were asked this question on affiliate special. I'll pose it to you. If the eagles could choose, who do you think they'd play right now? Would they play fully healthy Jimmy Garoppolo or would they play Brock purdy? I think they'd play Brock purdy. Yeah, see, she and I both ended up picking fully healthy Jimmy. And the reason is because they'd rather play fully healthy Jimmy. They'd rather play against fully healthy, Jimmy. What is that? Because with Jimmy you know what he is. Jimmy as cut and dry as it gets. You know what he's gonna? You know what he's bad at. You know what coverages he throws interceptions into. Jimmy throws interceptions in the cover one robber like death and taxes, man. You can set your watch to it. You know his DNA. With purdy, there's more variants, and variants might initially feel like a good thing, but in this Shanahan offense, which is so good in the first creation so good on script on the plate as I am plash and fake move the linebacker throw to the void. It's so good in that first iteration. Any quarterback who brings something to the second half of the play out of structure out of script is an extremely difficult thing to handle now. It's a whole new part of the game. And purdy has been has been really impressive out of structure. He has like two or three, oh man, that was a close one, you know, you feel your shoulders punch up plays a game, but he's great at getting great at figuring out when to throw the football away when I just chalk and go to the next play. He's got good field vision, he can throw across his body, he's got that zippy little arm, he's got the feet that he can reassess. He's good outside the pocket. And I wouldn't want to have to deal with that if I were the eagles. So it is like, you look at purdy and say, mister irrelevant. It's never played out to championship game before, the link's gonna be roaring, and it's all true. But there hasn't been a moment yet, the NFL has been too big for him. He's got a lot of confidence, that little young guy, and I appreciate it for him. I feel really bad bailing on him after all these weeks of winning money on him, praising him, being in his corner. "Safe. All right, the world's hardest worker may have been solak is here. Bengals, chiefs, I'm going to take the Bengals. You seem a little more hesitant. Do you have faith in high ankle sprains? What's going on? My gut tells me chief swim. This is very much very much a gut thing. Matchup wise, there's a lot that's been in the Bengals favor over the course of this, this matchup right with mahomes. And there's a lot going particularly into this game. That's to the Bengals favor. I do think that there's a lot of like, wow, the bangles with a whole week to defensively game plan against mahomes knowing he has a high ankle spray, knowing he's going to be limited. And there's zero, Andy Reid with a whole week to game plan around and knowing Patrick Mahomes is going to be able to scramble as much. You know, the advantage comes on both sides. And when you watch that week 13 game that the Bengals played against the chiefs, one of the things that you see is a mahomes that wanted to find the windows down the field, wanted to attack coverage deep, wanted to attack isolation coverage deep, and in doing so, eschewed checkdowns. They had opportunities to throw it right now quickly. Jerick McKinnon fall out, second and 5. And he didn't take those. And that's always okay. Mahomes is always allowed to do that. I never have an issue with him, denying a check down that other port of X but it takes these Patrick Mahomes, but this upcoming Sunday, he might be 85% Patrick Mahomes, 90% Patrick mahomes. And if the Bengals try to play them the same way they have previously, drop a lot of guys in his own coverage, play with eyes on the pockets of mahomes escapes. They can move with him, right? They can adjust the Travis Kelce routes and all the made up offense. They try to play it that way, then there's gonna be a lot of free jerick McKinnon, Isaiah Pacheco. Get me to second and 5. There's gonna be a lot of opportunities to run the football, right? Run out of run out of the gun and try to get their runs to the boundary. It's gonna be Michael Hardman jet touches and kadarius Tony screens, and stuff that's not like sexy. It's not thrilling. It's not incredible, but it's a lot of what's made up the cheese offense this year, right? They haven't been a very good downfield passing team. They've largely been a team that works short to intermediate. And it'll get the job done. They have the athletes where they can move the ball down the field. So I think if the chiefs want to implement a game plan, that doesn't put any stress on the homes ankle, they can and still be successful. And then if they have faith in homes coming around a little bit, then go and let them run around a little bit. He's really good at doing that too. The cheese might be zero and three against the Bengals. But since the chiefs were strongly impressively efficient on offense in the game, they played in week 13. It was a turnover on the second to last drive and a missed field on the last drive that made the difference. And so I don't think I did a video this week on Lou and rumo and how he's affected mahomes. I think he's one of the best at slowing mahomes down, but I do think his overall effect is being overstated. It's not as dominant as it appears. If they know that he can't really move around, doesn't that change how they approach him with how they try to rush him and when he's mahomes, you have to worry about him scampering out, but now you can just kind of go at him, right? If he can't move side to side? Yes and no, right? I think yes in the sense that you would see plays that the bangles would have against mahomes where they'd have like Trey hendrickson against Orlando Brown, which the Bengals do not respect Orlando Brown. They know or land around his days with the ravens. They know where they can get against him. They love when they get on land around one on one tray hendrickson. So they'll have one guy rush Orlando Brown and pretty much everybody else. 8 guys in coverage in two other rushers are just trying to set the fence. Don't let them homes out. They'll have those plays. But the thing is that there's always two separate fields. Two separate schools of like how a quarterback moves in the pocket when he's pressured. There's the guys who like Jalen hurts, just want to drop the ball, drop their eyes, run, get out of the pocket, and then go do something afterward. And then there's the guys who can buy just an extra second, right? They can see that slight pocket relocation. We talked about this on a previous pod. In order to do the first one, yeah, you feet need to be pretty healthy. In order to do the second one, I mean, it's gonna hurt, you know, to push off your back foot, but you can just buy that extra second, go find the check down, dump it off. And mahomes is extremely good at doing that. It's one of the things that makes him so special is if you remember after that 2020 playoff run, Mitchell Schwartz, there was some criticism. He goes too deep in the pocket. He invites pressure. He's dramatically improved his ability to just buy a half second in the pocket. And so if you decide to go, let's go all out. Everybody rush, go get him. He might not be able to run away and get 11 yard scrambles as much to usually does, but he can still make that first guy miss. He has the vestibular sense right as the head and the eyes and the feeling of who's around where it's about smart. It's about tempo, right? So why Brady who famously ran the worst 40 in history or whatever is so good at this, right? 'cause it's not about explosive ankles. It's about knowing your tempo, knowing your landmarks knowing where the space is. So I do think it would be an overreaction if the Bengals go and the first drive is still limping a little bit and they say, everybody go get them, rush like crazy. I think moms will make them pay.

"Much better running game this year, there's been a resilience to them all year in these close games where either they've blown leads or whatever, but there's some sort of infrastructure in place where it's like, all right, we need a couple first downs. All right, somehow Kelsey's going to get open. Pacheco has turned into a really good, I think, playoff running back. And then defensively, they have two guys that are going to be able to at least test this since he line. Now, there's a chance and we talked about this last week that they lose the left tackle Jonah Williams. Like, oh my God, they lost their starting left tackle. And it's like, well, what's that? Carmen was better. Yeah, maybe they're fine. But I do think that if the Bengals can protect burrow, I just think they're going to win. I think they have an edge to them. That started really with the way that the post Hamlin stuff was handled with the scheduling, where they got hosed. And then they started selling tickets for the Atlanta game. It was so interesting to read all the quotes. What do you have on Intel from after that with, I mean, basically borough called it the sorry, that's a refund. Refunds. And he said it to Tracy wolfson on CBS, which is like the league broadcast partner. That wasn't to some blog. It was like, here, everybody's sorry. So Zach Taylor has been on one since the Hamlin thing. And I think people called him being insensitive or salty, but he was pissed about the coin toss with the Baltimore Ravens and was very vocal about it. What the hell is that? Does it make sense? It's not equitable that, hey, that that game would be a neutral game in ours would be a coin toss. So they go out there and they beat the ravens in the final week of the season to the coin toss is null and void. Then they go beat them in the wild card round. They go to the AFC divisional round. And I think they leaned into it. And I thought Taylor, who comes across as howdy duty and looks like, you know, he's just, he's just this happy go lucky, a nice guy that gets pushed around. After the game, Taylor gets on the podium and is like, you know, I really want to apologize for all the folks who work so hard at the NFL league office to do all the logistics for that Atlanta AFC championship game. I know. It's really tough. And for all those people at the league office who really put all their heart and soul into figuring out the logistics behind a coin toss, like, sorry guys, sorry we ruined your plans. And you know that once a coach is pithy and sarcastic like that, especially a guy who isn't usually like that, the players are reacting. I mean, Mike Hilton is miked up for that game. They're just beating the snot out of the bills. And he's like, all right, we'll see you all in borough head. Calling arrowhead burrow head. Like, that's how they talk. That's how they talk. They don't respect the chiefs as like this heavy. They look at the chiefs as a team that they have owned and Zach Taylor has them truly thinking, not us against the world, but that the league office doesn't want us to be the team. They would rather have mahomes and Allen in a neutral field and sell those things. They don't want that Bengals logo. You know, we're not that team. And it spread on to the coaching staff. I could tell you from sources around the league that like, there's some people, how do you not interview Lou Anna rumo for a head coaching job? Defensive coordinator. The players love him. He's one of the best offensive minds the last two years. 27 different coaches, I believe, including David Shaw and Jim Harbaugh were interviewed for head coaching jobs. Luanna remote didn't get one. 5 coaching and agencies. Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinator. They light up everybody. Despite when Jamar chase goes down, how many interviews did he get one? Almost as a courtesy, it felt like from the colts. I haven't heard him as a likely guy to get that gig. So you're talking about a coaching staff that's been disrespected, a bunch of players that feel disrespected. Never mentioned as the best receiver in the league. There's a lot of fuck you to this team. You know, I want to stay on the since EKC game, but Syrian seems like he has it too. Oh yeah. And I don't know where it came from. It certainly was the case that first season, but it seems like this last season. You watch them on the sideline. I don't remember other than Mike Tomlin. I don't remember a coach like being that animated and that kind of aggro with his like almost like he's part of the team. I really enjoy it. I'm in a syriani. Yeah, so he had a beat Dallas shirt last year that he gave out to the whole team before the eagles played the cowboys and the cowboys beat them handedly on a Monday night and I got like a lot of negative pushback and he's had a lot of different stuff where he shows a lot of the box. He's one of these guys shows the sweet science. We'll show a big boxing match before a game and be like, here's how it works. I believe I read it. I might have been from Jeff mcclain from the Philly inquirer that he read them a dramatic reading of like an M and M rack lyric. I saw that, yeah. And it's like, he's one of those guys. He's gonna go to every last piece, but it's an attitude there, and it starts with Siri and I think the way those cameras are now, those 4D cameras, like you get like that really close up look. So when he's mean mugging, it's like right in your face. But if you see right next to him, there's a guy Ted wrath, who's the vice president of player performance. He's the one wearing the sleeveless sweatshirt with tattoos, and he's doing it also. And he's going after the players and he used to be with McVeigh in Los Angeles. There's a lot of that stuff where it's like, we're gonna set the tone and the coaches are like the players and we live and die with this stuff, but you know, that offensive line, Brandon Graham, all those guys. They have this feeling of like, we're gonna be the bullies. You might beat us, whatever, but we are going to be the bullies, and we are stronger, tougher. And you said the word aggro, it does feel like that when you watch this Philly team that they come out there and they want to pummel you. I think since he's like that too. And you know, one of the things that really helped them was when P Ryan was able to get a lot of carries and he had a lot of carriers in the chiefs game this year, actually. I think he was 26 for one O four stuff like that. But now they have this double barreled action.

"Snow game against a really powerful, well run offense. It's like, yeah, man, this could happen. This is on the spectrum of possibilities. So I don't know. This sweeping narrative that they were out coach that they were out man that all this stuff happened. I was like, I don't know. I don't really buy it. They had a bad game. They're exhausted. They're tired. And they were in heavyweight title fights all season long. It's just, it's the end of it really long, unfair season. You could go back to and this is obviously a much less serious issue, but back to like, you know, Josh hell, Josh Allen with the elbow issue earlier in the year in the game. Four years ago. He wasn't quite right the rest of the year. He, you know, granted the game was kind of out of reach at that point, but you know, he got, he got had it aggravated in some way, shape or form toward the end of that game on the near fumble there. That the ruled incomplete, I tend to agree with you one because you're generally right about these things and two because it's such a fine line. And you can sort of be like, yeah, you know, do our Hammond was there and you run through and all that stuff. And okay, okay. The other team's really jacked up for the playoff game too. They were there too. I mean, yes, and I understand that there's that other part of the argument, right? Where they're like, well, the Bengals saw it too. They were there. They knew what happened. I just think it's different. I think it's a different thing when it's your teammate. Yes. When it's your it's your friend. It's your friend. Yes. Yeah. Yep. So yeah, look, they went out and they played, they played a C minus game, and they got beat by a really good team in this one. I don't know exactly what you sort of say as a takeaway other than the Bengals are really good. If you are the bills, you're looking at this and you're going to be in this in this category of avac contenders for the foreseeable future for the next couple seasons here, and it's really hard to win games in the postseason. The one thing I guess you'd say, I think Sunday and Saturday kind of underlined, you know, we know it's important to be the number one seed because you get to buy a week and you get a little more rest and you get a free win and all that stuff. And you get to play at home. This year it was especially important because you had really three good teams in each conference. Once Lamar Jackson went down and obviously the ravens gave the Bengals all they could handle last week, but you kind of had three legitimate contenders in each conference and you had a 14 that was kind of upstart playing with house money kind of team. They both played in lost on Saturday. And the eagles and the chiefs kind of got to cruise on it. Wait, we'll get to those games a little bit, but if you're the bills, you're going to have to beat Joe burrow and Patrick Mahomes on back to back weekends. That is Patrick Mahomes setting his ankle injury aside. That's a really tall order. Again, for a team that is just been through emotionally and physically probably more than any team has been through this season. Josh Allen, the strength of this defense is that secondary. How many guys did they go through? It just becomes too much after a while and you're just not going to beat the other elite teams in those situations. Right. And all right, so let's go to the, let's go to the actual nuts and bolts of this. I just think as good. And I said this at the beginning of the year, I thought that when you added James cook and von Miller, I thought that was it. You know, puzzle complete. And that was probably an overreaction in hindsight on my part, but what you're looking at is Josh Allen and Joe burrow in different ways can do similar things to a defense that can put them on guard in a similar way. And what the Bengals were able to do is just have Joe Mixon and samaje P Ryan just pound the living daylights out of a good but taxed bills defense and then when they loaded the box, it was just burrow and chase ISO. And you're no team is going to beat that. I mean, the rams barely beat it in the Super Bowl. And so I don't know. I just think that's kind of your one missing ingredient. Josh Allen is your power running game. And I do think that at some point it's probably worth really investing in and developing that, you know? They miss von Miller in this game. I think that's indisputable. The defensive line played maybe there were scam of the year in this one. At a time when obviously you need to do something. And it does affect the password. It does affect your defensive line when you are playing in the kind of sloshing and those types of conditions, although obviously we saw the Bengals front certainly got the better of the bills offensive line in this one. So the other thing that the one long term concern I'd have as a bills fan at this point, looking forward to 23 and 24 and all these subsequent seasons, who's the one guy you can stop no matter what over the years was Tom Brady. Who plays stylistically like Tom Brie with plus athleticism at this point in his career, Joe burrow. Are you going to be running into Joe burrow every January and just being unable to get over that hump? That might be what you're looking at, you're obviously you have an offense that can go drive for drive with anyone in the league, but there were just no answers on the defensive side of the ball. And defensive line played poorly, a lot of backups in the secondary, none of that helps, but schematically there was just nothing nothing going for buffalo here. Yeah, just couldn't get out of it and listen, I mean, burrow has, I think, the very subtle evolution here is that he is, you know, we talked about Tom Brady in terms of pocket presence, but he can move and he's really fast and he's also like he plays big too. If you were to, if you were to just allow me to watch this game and wouldn't tell me anything about Josh Allen or Joe burrow, I would have thought burrow would be the guy that you would have described Allen as and Allen would have been the guy you described burrow ass. Does that make sense? He played big today. He picked up a couple first downs with his legs. He was pushing the pocket a little bit. And so was Allen, obviously. But he was a factor, you know? I always like to say like Alex Smith is the gold standard of like the functional scrambling, but burrow is becoming that, I think, in the NFL. Like the smart use of your legs, you know? Yep. And look, the other thing with the bills is those first two drives. I think it was the first you guys. I can't remember the second drive on the second play. I'm going to refer to here, but first start down you face, you get that zero blitz from Lu and rumo and you get Stefon Diggs open downfield and Josh, I won't miss him. And you just kind of shrug your shoulders and say, all right, well, you know, so he goes sometimes. I think it was the subsequent drive, but they did the opposite on third down where they dropped 8 into coverage, and I've been curious to see what the bills would do when or what specifically Josh Allen would do when he saw that 8 man coverage. And instead Trey Henderson just went right around Deion Dawkins and he was on Josh Allen within two seconds. And that's obviously there's nothing you can do about that. "Deserves to be second in coach of the year voting behind mcdaniel? Nick sirianni. Brabham's got the lifetime achievement. He should always be top three. He won it last year, and I was like, oh, that's right, he did win it last year, 'cause he feels like he should always, he and Belichick should just get awards for just like, hey, you guys always do a great job. Congratulations moving on. The 7 and four with all the injuries they had, the fact that they almost won that Malik cooker game, like just an incredible year bam. What's your next matchup? Patrick Mahomes versus Lou and aroma. This was the defining matchup of the AFC championship game last year, Lou and aroma for those who don't know big Lou is the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. Love this guy. And he's gotten head coach buzz. I'm very glad he has. I'm not sure he'll take it 'cause he strikes me as the kind of guy who kind of just wants to coach defense and go home and see his kids for the rest of his life, but we'll see. Who knows? The thing about an aroma that's most impressive is that a lot of good defensive coordinators coach their stuff, they coach it well. They do what they do, and then they get the right personnel for it, they get the right body types, they know some of the changeups they need to pitch and then they dictate. They dominate. Ryan's with the dolphins or with the diners, excuse me. We play chorus, we rush with four we dominate. Here we go. And we're almost more in the Belichick vein where he'll run something out in week 7 that he wasn't doing in week one. He'll change a look here in cheadle there. Like against the Titans, they're running bare fronts with Sam Hubbard on the inside, they got two defensive tackles on the other moving guys around. Like, they do a crazy number of things. Most notably against pash mahomes in the chiefs in that AFC championship game. The Bengals, the Bengals dropped 8. They dropped 8 defenders on 35% of their passing play. So 8 in coverage, three guys rushing. Huge number. Astronomical number. The only other guy in the league who was comfortable dropping a at these high rates in a single game was Bill Belichick. He had done it a couple times. And against mahomes in the past couple of years. Mahomes really, really struggled against drop a in that game. He had negative 14.4 pass EPA, 7 for 13. Wait, hold on one second with that. When the drop a is so part of that is you're basically daring the other team to run or you're just trying to you're trying to confuse them with the coverage because you never know which 8, but if it's 8 going back, you know it's 8 anyways. So what do you think the chiefs learned from that? It's a great question. So one, are you challenging the opposing team to run a little bit? Because typically you'll be in like too high shells and light boxes regardless. That extra player you drop is gonna have a run pass key though. So he's gonna be online a scrimmage. And when he gets an office alignment coming right at him, looking like he's run blocking, he'll play run defense. It's not like he's dropping right at the snap, right? Yeah. So he's still going to be involved in the run fit. So it's not like they're playing with three down defensive lineman. That's not the case. So it's a little bit of a run challenge, not so much. Secondly, what are you doing in coverage? That's the really cool thing about Lou Anna rumo, right? A lot of the drop 8 stuff that you might run is like, okay, run, you know, three deep safeties and 5 underneath, right? You see that in college? Well, in Aruba would run like man coverage with three like 5 guys on 5 guys and then three bonus dudes if one deep middle safety, another guy on mahomes and other guy robbing just kind of floating around, he'd run drop one of the ends and have him kind of spy my homes from one side and they'd force mahomes out of the pocket a certain direction. He was really creative with the 8 players he had. We don't see a lot of drop 8 in the NFL. So the rules are very nebulous. He would run Tampa two and he would change the tamper droppers. They just, with that extra body, they're creating like you say a lot of confusion. And so mahomes was challenged in that game, either get rid of the ball right now, like, okay, get rid of the ball, go, give it to your read, let the players make the place where you throw underneath. Or try to do your usual scramble drill stuff, try to do your usual chaos stuff. And that doesn't work when there's an extra body back there, right? Oh, Travis Kelce, go sit down in space. We've got three dudes around Travis Kelce. There ain't a lot of space. You know, you really put mahomes in an awkward spot for how he likes to play. That was last year. Last year mahomes, epaper drop back against drop 8, negative .1, this season, .42. One of the league's best passers against drop 8, storm the ball much shallower and getting a lot more yeah. This is the change the chiefs offense May when they got rid of Tyree kill brought in juju Smith used to do. You think it was partly because that Bengals game? Yes. It's part of that. Another part of it is mahomes choosing to change how he plays, right? And this is the thing about mahomes that has always been most impressive. Like the arm, the nola passes, the sidearm nonsense, whatever you want. The thing about mahomes that is shocking is that more than most quarterbacks, any other quarterback in the league, he changes his playstyle. He will change the way he plays the game. He's mature enough to say, yes, I'm this talented, but sometimes I just have to dump the ball off to Isaiah Pacheco. And so I'm just going to and he has the humility and the self control to do that. And so Ana rumu, one of your best changing, molding, throw different pitches at your defensive coordinators against mahomes, who has changed his playstyle since the last time that Lou saw him. Huge, huge, huge AFC playoff defining matchup once again because Lou's gonna have new stuff from mahomes. And mahomes is gonna have a different playstyle than Lucy before. So it's new challenges, very interesting to see what the Bengals defense brings out. I think mahomes still has the advantage, especially no chito Auguste, the stark corner for the Bengals. He's into this year. But Lou is a great signal of what other teams might start to do against your offense because he's very good at building these game plans. "Friend. Don't let them get the ball back. So of course, we burn through a quick mister field goal, they had two minutes left, and all of a sudden it was 19 7. And I was like having a heart attack because I've watched this on my TVs every Sunday for teams screw up that clock is my friend moment. I remember writing 20 years ago that they should have some 15 year old kid with pimples next to the coach who's played like a million hours of Madden. Just like Jeff Saturday. I mean, they pulled Jeff Saturday out of the ESPN booth. They might as well give them like a 15 year old who's played mad at all the time, just like call time out right now. Just do it. That's his only job. Call time out right now. The thing is, Indy has two good analytics guys. I've got these guys before. They're very smart and they know what they're doing. And it goes so fast. I think they just kind of get discombobulated. Yeah, and maybe they were telling him and he wasn't listening. Maybe they were scared, like, I don't know what the dynamic was there, but remember that opening press conference, erse pounding the table saying like, teams rely too much on analytics and then they get messed up and that's why we're not going to do and maybe Saturday's like screw it. I'm going with my gut. I don't think we should run. Like let's just keep going. Who knows what he was doing? Is it disaster? Go to number three. Okay. So the third one is derivative market betting is better now than ever. There's more options now than ever. And in the season like we're seeing play out, it's more valuable than ever. So, you know, back, back when we started gambling and you started longer than I did. I mean, you didn't have all these derivative markets and certainly not open as early as they are now. But with so much competition in the betting marketplace and legalization and so many more outs being opened up. You could bet on so many different things well before pre flop. And so, you know, there are certain teams that I won't bet on in the full game. There are certain teams that I won't bet on in the first half. There are certain teams that I will only bet there total over or under in the first half and I won't do it full for the full game. There's a variety of different examples. I mean, if you look at the Miami Dolphins, you just talked about them against the Houston Texans, a good bet to make in the second half was a bet on the Houston Texans, but the dolphins, they score early since tua came back. They're the number two best first half point margin, but they really outscored their opponents by ten points total in the second half over 5 games. They played since two has been back. The Chargers are a team that just does not score offensively in the second half of games number 28th in the NFL. You look at the script from the Tennessee Titans, one of the best first half teams out there, they fall off the rails typically in the second half of games. The same is true on the defensive side of the ball. If you look at a team like the eagles, who the Titans are going to be playing this week, the eagles allow 5.7 points per game in the first quarter. That's number two worst of all teams. So you got a great first quarter and first half team in the Titans going up against one of the worst defenses in the first half. That's an opportunity for like a first half bet on the Titans, although the market wasn't out yet when I was before we're recording this. You look at some of the defensive adjustments that these teams make at halftime. Like if you're betting on the Bengals, you should almost always bet them full game, not the first half because Lou Anna rumo's defensive adjustments are absolutely elite. They have the number four. What are their stats? Their second half stats are insane, right? Yeah, well, for a while there, they weren't allowing a single touchdown score for like 15 games in a row, something like that. Yeah. They have this season alone because it dates back to last year too, but just looking at this season, they have the number four best second half point differential. They're allowing just 7 points per game in the second half, which is also fourth best. D'amico Ryan's in the San Francisco forty-niners, another team that's making really good adjustments at halftime. Although I will say that this is a great game to talk about because tua is playing the forty-niners this week and now two is going to be down as left tackle, but the forty-niners have been stellar inside the red zone. And the Miami Dolphins have been one of the few teams that's been great down inside of the red zone. And they're playing without toron Armstead, the left tackle. So that's going to be a problem against this defense, but I'm really going to look forward to seeing how they match up against the former defense that Mike mcdaniel was at with the forty-niners. We talk about the Baltimore Ravens blowing all these leads. They continue to do it. They did it yet again against the Jaguars. We talk about Lamar Jackson not playing as well. The reality too, though, is their defense is allowing 13 points on average in the second half of games this year. It's the fourth worst in the NFL and the teams that are like number one, two, three worst plus the number 5 worst, like you're like, oh yeah, these defenses stink. But then like the Baltimore Ravens, that's a defense that you view as decent and they're allowing so many points. So, you know, their defensive coordinator Mike McDonald has not been calling good plays in the second half of games the strategy has it been sound. So there's a variety of they're definitely in, are we sure they're a good team Baltimore? Yeah, well, yeah, for sure. A 100%. I mean, they can't run the ball to save their life to protect the lead. They're defense. And their defense just doesn't get stopped over and over again. I'm starting to, I think Cincinnati can take that division.

Like after kind of the powerhouse Friday lineup, she would come on and she's an accomplished journalist. I think she was an NBC forever. She had a really, you know, and not to say that Nickelodeon is not an accomplish thing. I think it's a very cool thing to want to explain news to kids. But yes, producer Shelby said, Nick news, you idiot. Yes. All right. But yeah, most nights you would not get to see it because I had to go to bed after are you afraid of the dark, which is a bad show to put a kit to bed with after, by the way. But yeah. Nick news with Linda Ellerbee was like, hey, like this week, we're gonna learn about like, you know, where, you know, where cement comes from and you're just like, all right, you know, I can miss this, but sometimes like Linda Ellerbee would come on and be like, you know, the president of Russia has been shot tonight on Nick news, and you're like, wow, like this is gonna be a heavy show. So that's kind of the feeling that I got since I don't read the production notes. Before this, that you were kind of setting me up like Linda Ellerbee a little bit. Well, they're starting the season. And I think that's kind of right. That's kind of the jumping off point for you right here. At the end of the show, the last segment, if you want to stick around, we're going to do our predictions. I think correct me if I'm wrong. He's coming on solely to insult you. So this will be fun. So Mitch is Mitch's Mitch's obviously a character in our universe. And we bring him up quite a bit. He's a great follow on Twitter. I would highly recommend following Mitch. But he's also one of the most detail oriented people in the history of the world that I've ever met. And he puts up with a lot of crap for me. And so I predicted all 272 games. It took Mitch. I tied that thing in such a knot that it took Mitch like 8 hours with official NFL tie breaking rules to figure out who was making the playoffs in my from my Excel spreadsheet. So I want him to come on tell everybody what a jerk I am. Talk about his harrowing experience editing that and also let have him let everybody know that he came up with the Super Bowl pick that him and I share long before me and that I'm just a copycat bandwagon fan. Okay, all right. He also this has never happened before. He requested to play more than four, but fewer than 6 questions. Wow. Wow. He'll regret that, but we're gonna do it here. But we are going to start off the two of us, we are going to break down, there are 6. There are no more than 6, no fewer than 6. There's not 5, there's not 7. There's not, boy, what's a number another number that's higher than they say that there's not like 23, there's not like two. There are 6 stories that will define this NFL season, and we are going to give you all 6 of them. And we're going to do that right now. We'll alternate, I guess. Okay. Do you want to go first? Or do you want me to go first? I'll go first. Okay. Reverse alphabetical by first name, I think, is the way to go here. The storyline that I think we really didn't talk about, and no one talks about because every year we come to the seasons like, boy, these offenses look at all the offense in the league. Ah, the rules are all for offense and so many offensive innovations, et cetera, et cetera. I think we've kind of lost track of the fact that the Super Bowl and the conference title games last year, those were defensive battles. You had a slugfest between very two very familiar opponents forty-niners of rams, the NFC title game. In the AFC, you had Lou Anna rumo and that Bengals defense stymieing Patrick Mahomes in the second half, and that's what launched the Bengals into the Super Bowl. And that was coming off another Bengals game in which they, you know, that Titans game was another ugly defensive turning on turnovers type of a type of contest. We got to the Super Bowl and yes, you know, Aaron Donald did the things that he does, but you know, Raheem Morris, his both his blitz designs and his stunts, but also the way he, the moments he chose to unleash them. We're outstanding last season. And he had the Bengals number and Joe burrow's number in that game. And obviously we saw the rams, you know, part of it was the odo Beckham junior injury, but the rams were slowed down significantly in that game. And it looked like they were going to go nowhere in the second half until that final drive. So what I'm wondering is, you know, we've talked about, I guess the homogeneity of the league and how, you know, you say all the time, half the team's league are running some version of that Shanahan offense. I think that does make it a little bit ripe for maybe the defense to battle back a little bit this season. Yeah, obviously you are seeing these concepts more and more often, it makes them easier to defend, even if maybe you are not ideally equipped personnel wise to defend them at this point in whatever cycle this is at the NFL is in. So I'm just kind of looking around the league. You know, the teams I mentioned obviously the rams, the Bengals, those are really impressive teams with what they do defensively, I'm really curious to see I know I voted them like 22nd or something in the preseason power ranking, but I'm curious to see what the Steelers come up with this year. They have TJ watt. Yes. And that makes a big difference, but they really struggled defensively a year ago. However, they've gotten some reinforcements back. They're healthier on the defensive line, and it's a really impressive brain trust they have there. If you like what went on down in Miami defensively, the last couple of seasons, which you should, you're now combining Brian Flores and Mike Tomlin and Tara Austin. That's a lot of, it's a lot of experience and it's a lot of accomplishment in that defensive coaching room at this point. So that's a team I kind of have circled, but I'm just kind of curious overall to see how the defense reacts and is this the year that maybe the defense clause defense as a whole claw back a little bit against what has obviously been a pretty steady climb for offenses around

"It's really exciting. It's exciting to see the evolution of the back position in that way and how they're able to move through the league and change franchises. And this is certainly a huge step forward for the brands. We're going to talk about how big of a step forward when we get sort of into the future outlook for the rams. But I think it's just important to realize that what met effort did for the team is broader than just on a game by game basis. You know, great QBs, elevate teams and unseen ways. Their ability to execute the offensive vision for a team number one, right? And we don't we think we can see that all the time. But a lot of ways we can't always see what goes into that. The little things and how difficult that really is. The inevitability of the big plays in the game winning drives and somebody who has seen it all in this league rising to the occasion even when they haven't had the best game that inevitable feeling that they're going to do it. That's what you will get a guy like Matt Stafford. And that's what, like I said, that's what elevates him and separates him from the averages from the just from the Jared goffs in the Jimmy Garoppolo's and the guys who sort of, they make super bowls, but they're just, you know, you can see with your eyes that they're just not the same types of guys. I love that this season played out the way that it did for Matt Stafford. He didn't turn into a new quarterback. He didn't become a new guy. But you know who did become an elevated next level performer is his best wide receiver Cooper Cup. You know, we talked a lot over the years about what Tom Brady did for guys like Randy Moss and even Julian Edelman, how he helped to elevate their careers and bring them to their best. And that's absolutely what Matt Stafford did for Cooper Cup. He also helped do it for Odell Beckham junior who got the hell out of the purgatory of Cleveland with Baker Mayfield and came back and had he been able to play the entire game. Maybe he would have been in content for Super Bowl MVP. Finally, back in the well urged title and elevated his ability to plays, elevated a lot of the players around him. And he made Andrew Whitworth's final season at glove tackle potentially easier one by being able to operate so much better behind center. So in a world of truly exceptional over the top performances by quarterbacks, like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes and even a peak Lamar Jackson when he's operating in a healthy way peak Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers and all that stuff. I think we lose sight of how important it is to have a guy like Matt Stafford who's just naturally talented and has for a very long time since coming out of high school through college and into the NFL elevated the players around him. That stuff coming up. Okay, so moving on to where the Bengals go from here. This is tough. Because losing the Super Bowl is a really hard pill to swallow routines, the rams and Sean mcvay are a very good reminder of that. He's talked about how hard it was to bounce back from that. So was Zack Taylor, who was on the coaching staff of that team. And you know, I have to be honest. I don't think that the Bengals are going to make a deep playoff run next year. I think there's some stuff to work out. This was somewhat a season of destiny for them to make it this far. And they are going to regress a little bit. They have to obviously address some gaping holes on the offensive line. They don't have to do an entire overhaul, but they've got to get a lot better. They have to address some of their play calling issues and utilizing the run game and big games or there's all these little holes that they have to fill. But I think the future of the bangles lies in making some really difficult decisions about what they do with their coaching. Because I have to be honest that Taylor is not going to cut it for Joe girl. A second year quarterback doing as much play calling as he's doing. Listen, I am incredibly impressed by it. And I think that is great that some of these players are able to take the reins that way. But he needs more guidance. He needs more help. He shouldn't be doing that, you know, as often as he is. You know, Joe borrow is a bona FIDE star. He is a cold blooded killer out there, but making it back to a Super Bowl. For the rest of his career, let alone in the next couple of years is not a given, you know, he can ask Dan Marino about that and Dan Reno had the winningest NFL head coach of all time. You know, he can ask Aaron Rodgers how easy it is to get back to a Super Bowl. Harry Rogers hasn't been back to a Super Bowl since 2010. He can ask Drew Brees how he did is to get back to a Super Bowl. He went to one Super Bowl in his career, that was in 2009. He can ask beyton Manning. Payton Manning got out of his career by the skin of his teeth with two super bowls because he was, you know, he was physically degenerating, rapidly. He did not have another season left in him. So thankfully, thanks to von Miller in that defense. And they're extremely talented, explosive players on that offense, including the late great demarius Thomas, you know, big man who was very close to any of his career with one Super Bowl. It is not easy. And I saw absolutely nothing from Zack Taylor in the Super Bowl that makes me feel like he is the guy that's going to lead this team into a new generation of success in change the entire narrative of the Bengals in the way that they should be able to do with a guy as potentially generational as Joe burrow. They can't stick with the status quo. And Zack Taylor made very few interesting adjustments in that game. Couldn't get the run game going. Him putting P Ryan in on that third down conversion, not being able to convert on third or fourth and one. They were just a lot of mistakes. And I know that we could do this with every coach that loses the Super Bowl, right? But first of all, the rams tried to lose that game a couple times. And I'm not saying they didn't deserve the win they did. But this was not a high flying dynamic game. And Zack Taylor had plenty of opportunity to take the game by the reins and couldn't do it. You know, some of this is also like color, but just eye test. He looks so disengaged from the game even on the sideline. And I do think that long-term. He is not the guy who's going to lead Joe burrow in the Bengals to the promised land. I think it's all well and good to make a Super Bowl, you know, lots of okay coaches have made this Super Bowl and either lost or sometimes even want. But it's not good enough. For to have a quarterback like Joe borrow to just make the playoffs, you know, most years and in, you know, Andrew Luck and colt's territory. I just, you know, no one wants to see that. No one wants to see Andrew Luck. Two with Joe burrow and I think that unless the coach becomes a new person overnight, we may be looking at that. I know it is so crazy to say that a coach who took his team to the Super Bowl, a team like the bangles is not good enough for them long term. But part of the reason I think he's not good at them long term is because this postseason for the Bengals was so somewhat sleepy. They just got some really good match ups. And I think they're defensive coordinator Lou Anna rumo is not getting enough credit for what he did with that defense. I think it's not debatable how important he was to this run. And felt like a Joe burrow big Lou collaboration and that Zach Taylor was often on the ride for. And when you look around the AFC and you see the type of coach player combinations that he's going to be up against. Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, Jim Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson, McDermott and Josh Allen, we'll see what happens with Bill Belichick and Mac Jones. Zach Taylor's just not on that level. He's just not. He's not the guy. So I don't know. Maybe it's a hot take. I don't know. You guys discuss most yourselves. I know most of my football colleagues.

"Look, a lot has been made and you know, I talked about it earlier about Joe burrow's pressure, his performance under pressure. He won't flinch. He is an incredibly bright, very quick thinking quarterback at the line of scrimmage. And he can go to different calls and different schemes. On a moment's notice. As you know, both of you know that it's hard to do that. It's hard to go from a RPO kind of concept to a wide zone to a more traditional quarterback, what the Patriots have run for years and years and years with Tom Brady. It's difficult to throw all of that into the mix and pick and choose at a moment's notice, Joe burrow can do that. And I think Zach Taylor has taken advantage of that by picking and choosing different types of offensive attacks. One thing about Zack Taylor that he said a couple of weeks ago when I thought was very true. He said, if you have a cup of coffee with Sean mcvay, you're going to get a head coaching job in the National Football League. Meaning, obviously, Sean mcvay is so well known now and has such a reputation throughout football of coaching coach or having coaches on his staff who are well versed in different offensive schemes. The other thing that somebody brought up to me yesterday and get your opinion on this, what you think of this. It's much easier to hire an offensive head coach than it is a defensive coach. Brian Dave all for example. Versus the Giants going with a defensive guy. Let's say Lou Anna rumo, because Lou Anna rumo interviewed for the Giants head coaching job. And he's the D.C. with the Bengals now. It's easier for the Giants to go out and get Dave ball and Dave able to build an offense and hire defensively than it is the other way around. Do you agree with that? I do agree with it. I do think there's still a place for defensive coaches and obviously the two right here in the AFCs with Belichick and Sean McDermott have done really, really well as defense coaches. Defense first coaches, but the problem that you have is actually to keep it here with the bills and the Patriots is what's going on right now with the bills and the Patriots and that is they just lost their offense of coordinators to head coaching jobs. So issue that you have is that if you're a defensive minded head coach and Josh McDaniels takes the Raiders job and Brian dabel takes the Giants job, well, now every three or four years, your quarterback is starting over with a new offensive coordinator and a new play caller, whereas if you just hire that guy, if you hire his Zack Taylor, if you hire a Sean mcvay if you hire Brian dabel, Josh McDaniels, that system stays in place as long as that guy is the head coach..

"So you and I we talked about this last week on the midweek show. It was just it was difficult to find a path to victory for this Bengals team in Kansas City, even though they already beat them. You know, when they beat in the first time, they got two 70 something you are touchdowns from Jamar chase. The chances of that happening again just were very low. And they didn't happen. I don't know. At the end of the first half as the chiefs were, we thought in range to put more points on the board and basically go in with a commanding lead at halftime, which they had anyway at 21 to ten. It just looked like it might be ugly. And all of a sudden the Bengals just end up hanging around. And I thought it was look, I thought it was Lou and rumo's defense who did most of the lifting here. Yeah, and really kind of some surprising adjustments there because at the beginning of the game, it was really interesting to see how many really easy throws and I guess run it running lanes that Patrick Mahomes had. It seemed like they were really scared at the beginning and scared it's probably not the right word. They were trying to prevent that backbreaking touchdown. They're not scared. They're just trying to not make it happen, you know. They're doing they're doing what they're supposed to do. They want to prevent that back breaking touchdown. And so I thought it was interesting to see how they were just giving there's a lot of uncovered backs out of the backfield. At the beginning of that game, mahomes had a lot of running lanes. And so it was just kind of like here. Yeah, let tyreek hill take the 5 yard stop. You're like, go ahead. You can have that. But the problem is, that can really snowball quickly if you're the chief's offense because they know then how to transform that little bit of momentum into a quick game and then they just kind of keep rolling on you like that. But I was shocked at the way that as they came back, they just tightened and tightened and tightened, and their lateral tackling. Their lateral coverage ability when the chiefs tried to start expanding them to the sidelines was fantastic. I mean the tyreek hill fourth down attempt, which was one of the two plays that I think absolutely changed the tenor of this game for the Bengals was fantastic. It was also a bad play call, I think. Because he didn't have any blockers out there. But that said, like, to tackle him in that moment, if your Eli Apple is hard. It's like one of the hardest things to do. Yeah, absolutely. And look on that play. Look, you want to put tyreek hill in motion and okay, if there are still dudes on that side of the field, he is no longer an option for you if you're Patrick Mahomes. So that's an issue there. You got to look away from him, and if no one else open, you got to fire it into the stands and then go take your three points. But the way they were able to and look, we'll have to seat all 22 because I don't know exactly what was going on downfield on some of these plays where mahomes was extending plays behind the line of scrim. There were some three man rush approaches to him, but there were places where mahomes is doing his thing where he's running in circles behind the line of scrimmage and just no one ever came open. And he ends up he end up taking a couple of coverage sacks..
