Firefighter Cancer: Diane Cotter Describes Her Husband's Harrowing Diagnosis

"Diane Carter is a self -taught citizen activist who's upright focused and determined efforts in support of her husband fire lieutenant Paul Carter during and after their battle against Paul's occupational cancer served as the inspiration for the documentary Burned protecting the protectors by filmmaker Elijah Yetter Bowman and award -winning actor Mark Ruffalo executive producer. Diane is the ultimate standard bearer a smart outspoken and fearless woman who continues to march at the head of her six -year campaign to remove PFAS forever chemicals from the gear worn by today's firefighters. No less an authority that Ed Kelly general president of the IAFF has properly called Diane Carter the firefighter's hero. The firefighters hero that's uh some big big shoes to fill so Diane tell us your story first of all welcome thanks for being with us I actually watched a movie yesterday that you sent us and I had to pause several times because I was so overwhelmed and so pissed off a couple times good um yeah so we'll talk about the movie but first tell us your story can you give us your background a little bit sure thank you I'm glad to meet you ladies finally in person big follower of the show I love it I love what you do I love that spouses and significant others are involved because um that's what I am that's all that I am it's a it's a fire wife I have no formal education I did get my hairdressers license some years ago and I was the worst hairdresser in the world so I didn't go far but I stayed at home and raised our children until they were about 10 and 11. Paul got on the fire department in 1988 when our son was two months old and our daughter was 18 months old our son is now a firefighter in the same department my husband served at now works in the same station in Worcester they had a beautiful beautiful life we embraced everything that we loved about the fire service his friends became my friends their wives became my my best friends we vacation with them etc. Paul had spent 25 years on the rescue in Worcester he had a 28 -year career at age 55 he decided it was time to climb the ladder so he took the lieutenant's exam and he made lieutenant and he was pretty disappointed because that meant that he'd leave his crew and he had worked with this crew you know on the same shift for 25 years they'd gone through a lot together the Worcester warehouse fire they've gone through so much together at any event we went on vacation with our firefighter families to moosehead lake up in maine and we came back to a beautiful ceremony in Worcester city hall when my husband was promoted to lieutenant along with one of his best buddies and the rescue saw him off and it was wonderful Paul was getting ready getting prepared to go back on to a new rig and he had an appointment to see a doctor because he was going in for cataract surgery his pre -exam showed that he had just a very slightly elevated number in his psa for prostate he had that check regularly as he did a lot of checks for his health because he was a very fitness aware person at any event he did get the call to come in they wanted a biopsy and i thought nothing about a biopsy because to look at him he literally looked like a 45 -year -old at 55 he was very fit very very strong and the picture of health we went to the doctor's office and i can remember that day because i was just so adamant to get this over with this appointment because i had things to do and we were making small talk with the doctor and we were in the tiny doctor's office room the exam room and out of nowhere the doctor said yep it's cancer and in that moment that moment i can remember because i remember i screamed and i fell into the chair and Paul who's almost six feet tall he broke out in this sweat all over his body i could just see the beads of sweat come out from everywhere on him and he sunk into a chair he tore his shirt off and he sunk into a chair and i can remember the doctor talking for 45 minutes and i'm crying and Paul's looking at me looking at the doctor looking at me looking at the doctor and we didn't hear a word he said

"Like playing. I heard. Oh yeah, I thought it was okay. I just don't think it wasn't fun enough for my what I thought it was gonna be. I thought it was gonna be like more like a little bit more Fast & Furious like kind of tongue in cheek and it was like really serious about like hostage situations. I love that and I watched it twice. Did you really? Yeah. On demand. I did. I bought it on Amazon and then my dad was here, banged out the most of the movie with him again. Well, they're making a sequel with the Mike coulter character. They should. Yeah. You know what's really happening here, and I don't think it was a big enough story. Butler has kind of grabbed the reins from an aging Liam Neeson. He's just kind of taking those roles. Like ten years ago, that's a lie in this movie. It's called nonstop. It's just basically is, yeah. So butler is now in there. And he's been test driving a few different things, including our beloved den of thieves, which he did on the rewatchables, but now butler is kind of the guy for those movies, but I really want to know who the next wave is. So you want to thank butler junior is yeah. Conversation. I think it's somebody that we might not be expecting. I think it could be like just Chris Evans out of nowhere. Okay. Or like one of the helmsworth. What about why not ruffalo? The restless not big enough. You need a little size. I need to feel like if I crash in an island, my guy might be able to win a fight in a cabin. With a bunch of people could do. Filipino gangsters, yeah. Yeah. I'm surprised you didn't like it. I like that movie. I like Megan Megan too. I like Megan. Yeah. Yeah. There's been some decent movies so far this year. Yeah, I love dumb fury. Let's bring in some Rudy for a little Orlando Magic talk before we go. You want to stay for this year? Of course. This episode of the bell summons podcast brought to you by Arby's, my old friend, for the first time, Arby's just dropped their new steakhouse garlic ribeye sandwich and you don't want to miss it. It has premium cuts a real ribeye steak, one of the richest cuts available and naturally more marbling. Not a surprise that it's at Arby's because Arby's has the meats and now

"Clearly a lot of moving parts underneath and we're also going to talk about another company that is moving quite a bit or at least when it comes to headlines. 3M 3M shares finished down on the day bucking the overall rise in the market down 1.1%. The company is we know confronting a lot of regulatory pressure and lawsuits that threaten billions of dollars in damages related to its pfas forever chemicals. Now it says it's going to stop making these forever chemicals and look to discontinue their use in products by the end of 2025. Let's bring in Tiffany Carrey a consumer reporter for Bloomberg news who wrote about this. Tiffany was this a surprise that 3M is going to stop producing pfas forever chemicals by this particular timeline end of 2025. I think it did catch some people as surprised. I mean, the pressure has been on this company for a really long time, but you know, at some point, I guess they just decided to act. Can you step back a little bit and tell me what a forever chemical is. I feel like I should know what pfas is, but full disclosure, I don't they sound important, but how often would someone like me, for example, interact with one of these chemicals in my daily life? What are they used in? Yeah, I mean, every day, that's the crazy thing about these. They're not only forever chemicals. They're kind of everywhere chemicals. And it's mind boggling, actually, when you look at the list. So they're both used in consumer products that are stain proof, waterproof, so think of your rain jacket or your waterproof running shoes, your waterproof leather, boots. They were used in scotchgard for a long time. And they're also used in a lot of industrial applications like medical devices, solar panels, often they're used to make things smooth or slippery. So that's the connection. And how much pressure was there from consumers for 3M two to get out of this chemical to do something? Yeah, I think consumers are not even necessarily wear so much of the chemicals, but a lot of the environmental groups and the lawsuits are really where the pressure was coming from. I mean, this company has been sued by many different states, along with a lot of co defendants that use these chemicals by water authorities in different municipalities and states. And yeah, I mean, even California just got on even a bit late and soothe them just this year. I feel like this is like a Hollywood movie and further down in Tiffany's story. It was. Yes, dark waters. Mark Ruffalo. I think was in that movie? That's right. And he just actually put out a statement today calling this maybe, you know, the environmental crisis of our lifetimes, you know, a lot of people have compared these to DDT. But what's interesting here is that 3M did phase out some of these chemicals, 20 years ago, and that is what led to these lawsuits that we have today. And at that time, it kind of said, those aren't dangerous. And other people continue to contest that. And we've seen the lawsuits come and some of them have been successful. Some of them continue. And then today they're saying we're going to phase out the rest of these chemicals all types of these chemicals, which is what the environmental advocates have asked for. Yet because they're forever chemicals, they're still out there. No one has really a plan yet how to deal with them and it's not clear what the final liability is going to be. And well, let's talk about what the final liability could be. We don't know exactly Bloomberg intelligence has put some numbers to it. How much this could actually cost 3M walk us through them. Well, they have said 30 to 40 billion. It's really hard to which is a huge number, obviously, and I believe there are some legal briefs for 3M has said, look, you know, some of these lawsuits are so aggressive, they would just put us out of business. So clearly, there's a lot of work that needs to be done to figure out what the final number is going to be. And that's going to play out in a bunch of different court cases. Over a long time span. For anyone who has a Bloomberg terminal, there's a function on the terminal called and I quick, which gives you a quick explainer on things like forever chemicals. And there's one on pfas forever chemicals. Pfas are in scotchgard in Teflon. That's kind of disturbing, Teflon, because I just tough on all the time. Exactly. When I make her make the Teflon, I believe it's always been said they're not in the end product. It's one of those industries. Although there's some weird questions about what happens when you eat Tesla on up too much. I know I'm not people are cooking with it. You know, some of it scrapes off too. So just not to add appeal to the fire or anything, but certainly just things I'm thinking about. Our analysts going to be downgrading their estimates you think for 3M because of this, I bring this up because obviously there are a lot of people waiting for an investment to come down given the slowing economy, given the projections that the Federal Reserve will continue to raise interest rates because they see inflation being a persistent problem through 2023. That's something I don't have visibility into, but I do think what's interesting is

"You know what? You're a 100% right. They need to take a breath because who are they competing against? D.C. is taking a breath. And then taking it down and then taking a breath. They push back Aquaman 9 months, I heard today. And then the Shazam sequel, another three months. They pushed that back again? Yes. You know what? It's all about editing. Fuck it. I wouldn't be surprised if the next thing we hear is like, you know what, 2023. We're going to recast all these things. We're going to show we're going to stop. You know what? None of this worked. We're going to try it again. Hats off to y'all. Clap on the back all around. We're going to try and do this for real now. So we just ran it for the last 26 minutes. Good. I liked it. So she hulk was good. A 100%. Totally. Tod not even spoke yet. But I will say the comedy kept me in it, and honestly, I like the visual effects. Agreed. I'll read what I've got here. I like miss marvel before it. Ames for a fun lighthearted tone. It definitely goes for the easier, more relaxed vibe. As opposed to stuff like falcon Winter Soldier, which is a little more heavier sociopolitical content. This one's going for a little more fun. So yeah, it definitely like you have said breaks the fourth wall does the Deadpool thing. She speaks Zack Morris style, which is what I have. It's actually speaks to write to the camera. Some people may enjoy that. Some people might find it off putting. So itself may dictate whether or not you like this series. If you're okay with her talking right to you, you may enjoy it. If you find it more distracting, you might not. And I think that upcoming cameos, again, same deal. Daredevil abomination is supposedly going to be in it. Tim Roth. If you're into that kind of thing, if you enjoy the gratuitous cameos, you may enjoy the series. It's fun. It's easy. The actors all have great comedic timing. I like Mark Ruffalo's comedic timing. Like you said, I don't know if I necessarily buy him the hulk. I didn't mind Ed Norton as the hulk. I thought he was. I think Ed Norton minded. If he wasn't just dick, we could have had him for a series. Not in a good way. Yeah. Ruffalo is great. He's just not my banner. I like ruffalo as an actor, but I'm getting a little burnt out on it. Too much of his actual character is bleeding into the character. Too much ruffalo is hulk. I remember when I said, I'm that old, back in the day, holt didn't like taking stairs.

"Quick summary. What is pass over that? So quick summary here. Series follows the Jennifer Walters, who is Bruce banner's cousin. She's accidentally exposed to gamma irradiated blood and transforms similarly into a giant green creature of great strength and durability. And much of this first episode that we're talking about centers on her being mentored by Mark Ruffalo who plays the smart hulk version of the hulk on how to responsibly wield the power that she now has. So, and basically, it kind of like the other we're going to talk about House of dragon. A lot of this is just kind of set the table for later stuff. And I think that's fine. I think that's marvel's new template like you can understand of the series is the setup and the movie down the road to the payoff. That's where you get and yeah, you have to be along for it or you're not. You either are, you aren't. It's like watching Spider-Man, no way home or whatever. Where it's like, Matt Murdock shows up. It's like, if you don't watch the Netflix series, you're going to be lost. No, but I don't think you're lost just by Matt Murdock showing up. I think that's an Easter egg, whereas this is like, you're going to have to know who she is. Otherwise, you're going to get lost when she turns to the hulk and you're like, where did that come from? Or like miss marvel? It's like you have to watch a series to really understand how much she shows up in. Yeah, I think there's a big difference between an Easter egg and a whole backstory. Yeah. Yes, we have a whole backstory on Matt Murdock. And I think we'll get some more of them in the series. But if nobody watched any of the Netflix series and all they watched were the movies, the theatrical. If all they watch is no way home. Yeah. I think they'd be fine. Yeah, they're fine. I know, I'm just speaking from my perspective as a fan of I would get frustrated knowing that all these Easter eggs were sailing by and I'm not getting them.

"He was another one that evaded police for a long time. He also used the same cryptic toying with the cops. And it's crazy like take out him via like an old disk drive. They basically hacked one of the disk drives. He's sent in and he didn't realize the technology could do what it could, essentially. They were able to put him with his church. There was an old bit of data from his church where he was like a deacon or something. Which is brings me to one question I asked my wife. My wife's a huge true crime fan. Podcasts, everything. She's a big, like, was it margarita, like my favorite murder? Yeah. Murder squad. She listed all that stuff. And the thing that gets me is like, if there is truly like, they believe 20 suspected kills for this guy. How is there no DNA anywhere? And any of these crime scenes that they could try and trace. Yeah. Well, and I think before DNA was really a big part of crime, it wasn't well cared for in crime scene. It's kind of like fingerprints. Like prior to when fingerprints were part of solving crimes, they just didn't preserve that piece of it. And also DNA evidence is not as reliable as shows like CSI make us think. Yeah. So I think zodiac is one that it happened in so many different municipalities across such a long period of time. That it's really hard to collect all the data. And that's one of the things that made it hard to track serial killers back in the 60s and 70s was these different municipalities weren't working together. So we saw it in the movie of calling around all the different precincts that had a crime, like trying to figure out some sort of common thread when Mark Ruffalo is calling and he's just like, oh, no, you've got to call this guy and he's like, oh no, you got to call this guy..

I don't know what you're going to do. I don't know how we're all going to get through our night. You know, I don't want to think about not seeing Mark Ruffalo get up and make a fucking political speech about something nonsensical, which he always does. I don't want to see Lady Gaga. Clamoring for an award for the House of Gucci actually, I kind of wanted to see that just to laugh because she was awful at what she did. But now, we're not going to be able to.

"Duck? What the hell? Well, George Lucas. It was heavy Spider-Man in your stable, with having Fantastic Four Iron Man. The ones that have all now become ultra popular are first oops. Thank God blade came out. You know, it's part of what I'm talking about in my conflict. Movie history is thank God Blake came out and legitimized that maybe the marvel body of work, you know, that they have this incredible mythology that is very cinematic and you could make it into movies without making any money, not if they die at the box office like how are deducted? Yeah, I fear for the eternals. And if they're putting it as a linchpin for this next phase and the next group and it's supposed to be super important, I don't feel they've set that up. I fear somebody is like, hey, they love all our stuff. So just put it out. I don't know. Because the other problem is Black Widow was so so. Shang-Chi was really good, but not necessarily as memorable as some of the earlier movies arguably. And the TV shows were really good. And I love the TV shows. But the I know they went to the high with endgame. So you have to start low again and build back up. We have all new people. I get all that. But I don't think they've been coming out of the stable after two years and just pow pow and everybody's talking about it. And loving it and the stuff. It's been so, so. And I fear that the eternals is going to kill things in their struggle to get back up. Even though Spider-Man's right after that. That's kind of what I'm hoping is that if you think that, you know, all the marvel movies that went into Avengers Endgame, they weren't all great. The first couple hulks were pretty stinky. They kept story and without the magic actor that was going to make it work like Mark Ruffalo has done. Iron Man, first one great second one, not so good, third one. No, maybe second one good third one now. They kind of went downhill. You know what I mean? Looks like that's just not a good enough villain, even played by usually a real scenery chewer in terms of why I lost his name. Darn it. Danny or something like that. Yeah. Machete. Maybe it was Gary Oldman Gary Oldman. Was that the type of played Russian so, by the way, I just watched the professional and it's one of the best movies I've ever ever professional Gary Oldman sorry Leon, which is, why am I showing Reno and Natalie Portman as like the waif that is far too old for her, right? So back to this, I hope that we'll have that same thing that maybe we'll have a couple misfires and that.

I oh what movie was it. It's called grena wedding. it's i can remember. The comedy at the crew was from miami but made it to theaters and all that but Well i've always been interested in filmmaking. It was bizarre to see mark ruffalo version of hulk As part of that. But what do you do. You can't bring in ed norton. You can't have him voiced it over because that would be confusing so yeah it was. It was cool. I think was a neat reference for us fans who've and because that's one of the most hidden of the marvel movies like you've gotta really be out of your going out of your way to to watch that movie but it was neat to see and then he died in. Yeah mary wondering i'm interesting. Tv fourteen and they got it. That'll do it. Moreels thoughts nissan pop like 's it. I was proud to say popped like is. The next thing we see is lucky. Key show up. Hey with this army of as guardians and thors buddies. I don't remember their names. I know sieve was was in there and then the other ones sitting the gangs game. But they showed up to avenge his brother's death and stuff and loki brought out. Remember what that thing's called but it's not let me stop and think about where the four movie is in this time in this moment loki has already betrayed odin and thor at this point he in the tower move. "South. Thanks for joining us right to be here. We're going to talk about her office. The challenges of developing drugs to treat neurologic conditions and offices platform to address those challenges. I think neurologic conditions tend to be an area of some of the hardest targets therapeutically. My sense is this is an area with relatively high failure rates for drug developer's. Why is that is a lack of understanding of the complexity of these conditions. Lack of animal models delivery challenges or is it something else. I think the reason that neurology and psychiatry has categories have have some the lowest Success rates in drug discovery are primarily for two reasons. these are complex conditions of Very complex organ. Not well understood how the brain works and when when things go wrong why why they go wrong so it's complexity of disease and And secondarily i think because of that complexity to develop effective therapies. We might have to take more more sophisticated approaches and it goes through the two two major issues the other issues that you brought up a animal models are certainly more challenged the translate ability of Of behavior between species is hard and and of course There are challenges of getting into the brain but you know to to be fair. Plenty of plenty of drugs do get into the brain. Ruffalo has developed a platform for discovering therapies for neurologic disease. Easing patient derived human models known as organ. The left is attacking Jews all over the country. If you're a Democrat, you're Jewish. You're You're an idiot. You got some brain problem. She gotta scan Mark Ruffalo as they're so he tweeted this anti Semitic stuff. And then people pointed out there was hand I Semitic, while the Hamas a terrorist group was attacking a civilian population in Israel living in peace. And then Mark Ruffalo apologized for spreading the anti Semitic stuff on then the left attack him for being spineless and a coward for apologizing after suggesting Israel committed genocide. He's accusing Israel committing genocide. This is the Democrat Party today, just by the way Mark Love. Ruffalo was labeled spineless and a coward by his longtime fans after issued a late night apology for his tweets that suggested Israel was committing genocide in its ongoing conflict with Hamas. Now he's an actor and he's a moron, but he's got 7.5 million Twitter followers. And Twitter doesn't block him. By the way, you know, Jack Dorsey doesn't block him for saying that Israel is committing genocide when the genocidal terrorist group Hamas is actually attacking Israel and Israel's defending itself, But never mind that he said that stuff out. Not how they're committing genocide, and and then people pointed out that he's an idiot. So he apologized. And now the left is attacking him for apologizing now in doing research on that today, I have found another story from April 5th of this year from the what the SAG Awards. Mark Ruffalo opens up about mental illness after winning 2021 SAG Award. Well, that fits perfectly doesn't look. He's got a note from his doctor. He's mentally ill. But s O is a hail see, as far as I can tell, And so are so many of these Democrats attacking on people on these Palestinian lunatics spitting on diners in New York, spitting on diners in Los Angeles, and I gotta tell you, I got to tell you They're just keep pushing for more and more bad things more and more bad things. Also there was another story that I found amusing yesterday, Israeli police shot assailant to stab to people in Jerusalem. Why would I find that amusing? Israeli please fatally shot a man who stabbed an Israeli soldier and civilian in east Jerusalem on Monday of the Associated Press reported The assailant was unidentified Police referred to him as a terrorist. Okay, so to be a birthday and I was just wondering well, where's LeBron James LeBron James has got to send out a tweet of the Israelis saying you're next. Right? Because what the police shot somebody was stabbing people. LeBron is against that. We all know that. And in New York. These these people, these radical Islamists, anti Semites, genocidal anti Semites, and it's now coast to coast on the Democrats are in their camp, and that's why AOC was forced to come out. Make up a fake instance here, little video Saying anti Semitism is bad on I watched his video. Breitbart's posted a number of videos of leftists and terrorists wearing Palestinian flags attacking people in the United States because they believe them to be Jewish, and they're shouting at them and literally spitting in these gang of bearded men with Palestinian headdresses and scarves and flags. Attacking people at restaurants in New York and in Los Angeles, assuming they're Jewish. And spitting in their faces and threatening their lives and attacking them. And then the police come along and protect him, and I still have a lot of these people in New York and Los Angeles are anti police and vote Democrat and then the police come along and save them and the Democrats spit on them and the terrorists from with the Palestinian flags. Spit on them. Also keep in mind that if the convention in Philadelphia where Hillary Clinton got the nomination, remember when they forgot to bring any American flags remember that they were. They had Palestinians legs inside the Palestinian flags and set the whole there where they nominated. Really nominate Hillary Clinton for the presidency, and then she lost and that was a very good thing. Now the Democrats are and the Council on American Islamic Relations Organizing a national march for Palestine. In Washington. Palestine doesn't exist any more girls..

How the jobs report managed to surprise almost everyone

"I will tell you what you can talk. Black swans until the cows come home. Those completely unexpected events often rationalized after the fact, there was not anybody who saw this morning's May unemployment report. Come and guess is worth for maybe ten million jobs having been disappeared last month. Instead we got two and a half million added back and the unemployment rate went down. Now everything is obviously not labour-market, sunshine and light, but today while surprising was progress. We marketplace's Mitchell Hartman to do some forensics for us. Let's start with this. Guy Adam Russillo. He's thirty four a dental office assistant in Austin, Texas the beginning of the third week of March and they let us know that just did a code. Nineteen would be closed in the office. Russillo got on on employment then in mid-may. When Texas started reopening, he was called back. It's great you know I. Much prefer the work, then you sitting around somewhere, not doing anything. Now multiply Adam ruffalo about two and a half million, and that's how you get a massive job increase in May with the pandemic still raging University of Michigan Economist. Betsey Stevenson says dentistry is actually a perfect microcosm of how service jobs are returning. It's business where people have to be face to face or mouth to sharp shiny dental instrument. The economy started open up. People went. Went Back to the dentist, so dense offices accounted for a full ten percent of the jobs gained last month, but still about thirty percent of people who worked at dentists offices before the pandemic so far haven't been called Back Stevenson says consumers are still afraid of getting sick and spending their money so dentists they are still not needing all their workers because fear and loss. Loss of income is holding back. Demand More than half the jobs that returned in May were at bars, restaurants casinos in the like jober swell us at our consulting saw the turnaround in real time, consumer activity stores opening TSA data and Road Congestion Control of which employs nearly implied the worst was behind us, and very modest recovery had started, but he says it could be. Be Years before people go back to eating out and traveling like they used to. And all those workers have jobs again. I'm Mitchell Hartman for marketplace one more thing coming out of Mitchell story for all the good there was in this report. It has to be pointed out that the black unemployment rate actually went up in May sixteen point seven percent to sixteen point eight. For a little context on why that is the reality in this economy, historically and present day I refer you once again. Mitchell Hartman, he has been burning the candle at both ends his
