"And it had this feeling of the journalist and the subject as equals, which I loved, right? There was a whole era of sports writing where there was this mutual trust that often developed between writers and chubs. And where it wasn't, one wasn't up here and the other was down here. And Jackie, I think embodies that and obviously her ethics are unparalleled as well. So everyone, everyone respects her. That comes through in the piece. So that would be the one that that's my push for the book is stories like that by writers like that. Jackie is the greatest. And on that note, you note the PostScript. One of the cool things about this book for folks who might be running out to buy it and you should is that for a lot of these pieces, the writers themselves have provided current day blurb, sometimes a paragraph, sometimes several for the book, as a PostScript to say, you know, here's what I remember about reporting this story, or here's what happened after that, or here's what I then heard from the guy. So there's a lot of really cool new context in a way a reflection to add to the pieces that are already in there. So all great stuff, Chris, great job with this. I can't wait to read the piece on post play in SI. I believe in January, people keep an eye out for that. And everybody go around and get the basketball vault. Chris, this has been fantastic, man. Thanks so much. Yeah, there's a lot of fun. Thanks, Howard. Appreciate you. Okay, that's it for today's show. My thanks again to Chris Ballard. "By COVID in that with COVID. We started doing this on Zoom. And I think the pod has been so much better doing these on Zoom. So that's to me, been the biggest change in difference over doing it for 232 episodes. I also want to just shout out because I never do this and I should. Two people at SI, Scott Brody, Dan bloom, who are in charge of podcasts and run podcasts. They've been nothing but complimentary to me and have always said nice things about the pod and it's good to have that internal support from those two. And then my producer Shelby, who I don't mention enough who's doing this right now, she'll be royston, who's been with me since we think about 2019 is an excellent producer, so flexible and deals with my sort of hodgepodge way of putting this together. So I need to thank them. And then of course the listeners, I have to say, it's so bizarre because I've been written. I've written a column on the Internet for so long. And those people are so loyal. It's insane to me. I mean, I have people who started reading me back in 2007 and they still read my column today. But when you're on the, you know, when you write on the Internet on a daily basis, you do get people who hate you and nastiness. The pod is not like that. The pot, everyone's nice. It's a very nice change. All the listeners so great. So even when there's something people don't like or something negative, they tell me in a nice way. And that's what you want. You know, I'm surprised more people don't give me shit for like, I always say, you know and like, you know, but people don't point that out, which is nice. But, you know, people point out they don't like the wrestling or they may not like this guest. And that's fine, you know, it's all good, but I have to say the listeners are very, very, very, very nice. And I do appreciate everyone taking the time. You know, it's crazy. The podcast world is insane. I mean, there's just way, way, way, way, way too many podcasts. Everybody has a podcast. If you weren't on overnight at FAM, you'd have a podcast. They actually podcast the show. Whatever breakdown the show on the podcast form. I know, it's ridiculous, but that's what you have to do to separate yourself. I don't know how, but you've been able to do that. And it's great. I mean, you get big time guests which separates the podcast, but it's such a cluttered world, the podcasting world. I have other than being a guest on yours. I really don't know how it works, but I know that you've been able to obviously separate yourself with the guests that you get and just the conversation you have with them. I think it's been great. I hate what you guys do there in radio when you chop up a show and then call it a podcast. No, you're a radio show. All right, you're not a don't go into my world and stay separate. Well, let me ask you though, is it a when they say podcasts form? I don't know, you're right, it is completely different. It is a radio show that is broken down into hours that you can get available. That would be the podcast, but it was totally different. It's a brilliant move what radio. Sal's on the overnights on the face. I should say, well, this is going to come out Thursday. So you're going to have two mornings, Sal is on the mornings this week, 6 to ten on WFAN with Greg Gianni and they're doing a great job. Of course it would be nice if New York would actually do spring. Before we get to summer, it's like winter today. I said summer. I'm not making any promises on spring. I have no affiliation with the national weather service. They've really disappointed me this year. It was 19° in Minnesota the other day. And I'm still waiting for my spring in Minnesota too. All right, well, let's hope that both on the COVID front and the weather front we have a wonderful summer eventually when we get there if we ever get through whatever this spring is. "Them to cover these things. They just don't want to be covered, they don't want to, they feel like they don't want to be, they feel like they're covered unfairly in that other way. But I think at times, but I think that it is, if you ask any player in the league, if they want to be covered, if they wanted people to get to know them, I think grand majority want them to want to be known and want that to be happening. And that goes back to Kevin wanting to be one of the, he wants to be understood. He wants to be humanized. He thinks that players should be humanized. And kudos to him for knowing that like, hey, the way to be humanized is to interact with humans that are going to be covering you regardless. It's been hard to kind of see. We don't want to speak on it too much, but it's just been hard to cover, it's been harder to cover the league during this pandemic. And we all want this product to be covered and I'm glad that he did that. Yeah. No, absolutely. Thanks again, KD. Thank you, Logan Murdock. I've kept you very long here this afternoon, my friend, but this has been a blast. We will have to do it again. This is an honor, man. This was like, it was like when it was in Brooklyn, you know? It was like, it was like, that getting dinner. This was like, we should have done the pod during dinner. That was a phenomenal dinner, too. I don't know if I don't know if the streets is ready for the dinner talk, but for sure. This was like, this was like 40% of the dinner talk. Yeah, no, there's a lot. There's a lot that would have to be off the record. We can't we can't give it all the way either. "The Merck data. For antivirals. If we want to use those, we actually have to test people. So until we can test people, take off cases, reduce community spread. We're going to be dealing with the same thing. And those will lead to more restrictions. And I think that that's a really important thing for broader society to prepare for. There's two things that we've got to do. Test, reduce hospitalizations. If we do that, we're going to be okay. Last thing from an MBA standpoint and I know that you know the NBA's approach and society's approach kind of have to track together. But from an NBA standpoint, sports standpoint, when can we say that the pandemic is quote unquote over and have normalcy for NBA teams NBA fans like is that even is that even a question that's answerable right now. I'm not sure, but it is a curiosity. Like when do we get back to everybody can just go about their business the way that they did I shouldn't even say January February of 2020 because we probably were making mistakes then, but for all intents and purposes that was that was the before time still. When did we get when do we get back to that when can the NBA get back to that? Well, look, I think one of my last memories of normal society, even though I was thinking about COVID a lot was at the Chicago all star weekend. What is all star weekend going to be like this year? And I think also weekend is going to be heavily limited by COVID, testing, vaccination, all those things are still going to be topics of concern. We're not going to be through this by February. To go back to my previous point, hospitalizations are the thing that we're going to track. And when people are not dying each day when we're not losing 2000 people a day, we will start to be in a different stage of this pandemic and we can consider it endemic and we can move forward. There's still long COVID. There's still a lot of other impacts of this virus, but will vaccinate and will boost her and will come up with treatments. I think the point right now is that we are a ways away from that. We've got to do the right things. And unfortunately, repeatedly, we have not done the right things to quell hospitalizations to get that number down. We've done it in sports in large part, but broader society has to work together and take some of these lessons and apply them and optimistic about next summer. I'm going to continue to project out 6 7 months every time I can and say, if we do these things, here are the real requirements. Here's what we need to do. If we do that, we can get over the hump and we can make this meaningfully better. Anywhere where you could recommend listeners go just for their daily kind of get up to date on where things are, how they should be conducting themselves, what the best guidance is. Any particular resource that you think is the most helpful for the delay person? Yeah, you know, use The New York Times COVID tracker, I think that it's a really helpful daily aggregation of information, CDC, certainly provides really good consistent data about where we're at as a country. And I would encourage people right now to use the CDC website to find can 95 masks, particularly if you're going to be going out because it's a little thing that you can do right now to increase your margin for safety is how the right mask so that you can go out and you can enjoy certain events and you can enjoy certain things with a higher margin for safety. 95 masks for kids too. I would encourage people to look at that and ask questions. Listen to podcasts like be curious because there's a lot of information it's coming quick every day is a little bit of an adventure right now. And understand that I was up at 5 this morning trying to educate people today and I'm probably going to be up until midnight or one in the morning continuing on here today. So it's something that the healthcare workers out there are really working really hard to keep things open. And we want games to be played. So really, really try and do the right things, test, avoid transmitting, and realize one other thing. So you get COVID. Don't feel bad. It's a respiratory virus. Don't feel guilty like this thing. It's going to catch up to people if you're out and you're doing certain things. Your goal should be to reduce transmission. Don't transmit COVID. Identify your symptoms, get tested. If you do that, then you're really benefiting the community. And I think that that's a really important take home message. It's okay to get COVID. It's not okay to transmit it and put others at risk. That's something that we should all take really seriously. I'll add one other quick recommendation, which is folks if you're on Twitter to follow Andy slavitt and his daily strings of information, his threads on. Yeah, he's fantastic in his podcast that's fantastic. He is at a ASL a VITT phenomenal resource on a daily basis. Robbie, this has been fantastic. It's easy to use and having it available on my phone reminds me to study more. Quizlet is great because you can actually quiz yourself with their study modes. Science shows that testing yourself is a way more effective way to study than rereading your notes. I can make my own study set by scanning my notes or just picking for millions of premade sets until I find the one that's right for me. I can customize my sets with diagrams or images, which is helpful for my anatomy class. With quizlet plus, I can even make a study plan that lets me know exactly what to work on. With finals around the corner, if you haven't tried quizlet, you need to. It makes studying so convenient that I almost don't even mind doing it. Go to quizlet dot com today to check it out. But i'm going to route a minute. So coffee royston evermore. Coffee roasters royal mile again elixir. All of those people who had reached out to just gave me advice On how to approach something you know. I was afraid to tell them what. I was roasted on time and But they they didn't. It was like all right cool. You know we started on this or we started on. That i was like is a be more. Looks like microwave or a toaster of but they didn't care they were just since you don't have this kind of control or this variable to adjust this do this and it was just helpful up until we got our little one kilo. So it's been fine man so i was going to ask you to tell the world just in case they hadn't heard the story and you've kind of perfectly consistently transition the story on your own. You know where this supposed to go but keep talking about that you you got. You got your little roaster. You went burned down grandma's house. I do to help. So yeah like where you. How's that progression gone. What's what's been happening man. So people have been really really gracious. And i feel bad because i'm still. We did a fundraiser. To buy i one kilo right. And i was like it was on. Kgo fermi and noam gopher me you don't necessarily have to offer a kick back or anything to people but i was like i wouldn't feel right without doing that so we offered to like roast a bunch of his this brazil natural and send it out to folks and we got we got about half of it out but this was like freaking august or july when we finally got everything with the roaster in place and we still have is november. And we still haven't got all this coffee. Sit out to people. And it's only forty so folks that actually donated but only twenty some odd people ask for their kickback. And i just. I kept you know a sending messages out to people people like yo. Just don't sit. I want people to you. Know to taste the work and That's where we are with that right now but i mean man we're still roasting at home Especially with like. There's not a lot of people that are willing to Or places that we can afford to get a roasting space So we're just keeping it at home man and just working from it kinda works out perfectly. We got we got five like we want to be with them and raise them and be of all being really has also you know they'd get a chance to see me roast and the whole process but Yemeni started from my mother-in-law's dining room to her basement. Burnish it up and moving from a iron skillet to be more to the i. Leo are one v one will one kilo roster and just cranking out. Whatever the hell. I can afford from any importer on on earth that will sell us in green coffee man. That's where it is some men and so okay you're there and what's the what's the dream. What's the dream for free. You and tc eat men something small steel like i want small row story about about like a roaster slash room or something like that but takes the room seems so boosy and like hey come into my my tasting room in this game. I don't i know she that shit. I just want a little. Fa where. I can where people can feel like a third place for them. You can come in and just be their entire sales like that's all i want. I want that to happen and just chock up beat. I wanna be a part of people's day. And i know it sounds really cliche so textbook but like you were saying earlier. We are like a lotta people's first contact with somebody outside of their household and we we have a unique opportunity to either edge their day up or make it better and i wanna be a part of the the the ladder. I wanna make day a whole lot better by just serving him. You know great coffee if i can provide that And we really making them feel like a part of the family because that's my life you know what i'm saying like i i wish i was really cool and and super creative and talented. But i'm not. I'm a dad. I wear dad's shoes. I got jeans with the pocket with the imprint from wallet i got you know all the money in my wallet but it's gone real quick. You know i. I try to be cold but i am a husband and dad and and a and a self proclaimed coffee man but i just want people to be a part of that. That's what i wanted to grow to someday. Really want that all right. I'm going to be cheesy with you really quick. Because i disagree with you. I think here's the thing like real real real talk. Like i m just legit legitimately just the same kind of dude. In that way. I i was twenty five when we started verve coffee. I wore slippers to work. Congress Promised Student Borrowers A Break. Education Dept. Rejected 99% Of Them
"This message comes from n._p._r. Sponsor xfinity some things are slow like a snail races. Other things are fast like xfinity x. by get get fast speeds. Even when everyone is online working to make wifi simple easy awesome more at xfinity dot com restrictions apply now a story that affects tens of thousands of student loan borrowers congress expanded an effort to forgive the student loans of public servants. A new government watchdog report court says ninety nine percent of those people have been denied. N._p._r.'s corey turner got an early look at the report if you're feeling deja-vu well that's because this is is me on this program about this time last year twenty nine thousand applications for public service loan forgiveness have been processed so far and of those ninety nine percent have been denied in other words public service loan forgiveness or p._s. L. f. began in two thousand seven and it seemed simple enough work as a nurse firefighter. A teacher of the list is long while paying down your federal student loans and after ten years the education education department would forgive whatever's left matthew and heather austin who are teachers built their future around this promise. I remember sitting there when we found out that heather was pregnant with our first child and saying okay well when he's ten. We can take a vacation ten because that's when heather student loans would finally finally be forgiven under p._s. L. f. had there by the way did not want to talk about what has been a long painful odyssey for them. Both see p._s. L. f. isn't simple at all borrowers also have to have a certain kind of loan in a certain kind of payment plan last year when heather thought she'd met all the requirements the austin's got the letter. They'd been looking forward to open it up. Just kinda dropped instead of congratulations. The the letter said the austin's were still somehow ten more years away from loan forgiveness. It turns out. Matthew says they'd been in the wrong payment plan plan. I'm trying not to swear i i really this is the youngest i've been in my adult life. Congress heard the outcry from borrowers last year and tried to help this wasn't a puzzle or lottery congressman bobby scott. He is a virginia democrat and chairman of the house. Education committee is just incredible that we we had to <hes> last year passed legislation to create an emergency programme congress set aside seven hundred million dollars and relaxed some of those rigid rigid requirements so more people could qualify so for the past year tens of thousands of borrowers like heather austin have applied for this emergency n._c. Temporary fix but n._p._r. Has obtained an audit of the program's first year by the government accountability office and here's the deja-vu g._a._o. G._a._o. says as with the original program ninety nine percent of applications for this expansion of p._s. L. f. are also being denied nine. I think we were disheartened. I think we were discouraged. Melissa emory heiress led this new g._a._o. Investigation and he wanted to help a lot a lot of people <hes> and you don't want borrowers to be confused about the eligibility criteria and to face a high denial rate <hes> in yet. That's what we found the g._a._o. Report out today says most denials seventy one percent were because of a technicality borrowers who know they don't qualify for p. S. l. f. still have to apply for it so they can be rejected before they can apply for the fix and that's exactly what's happened to matthew and heather royston. What sort of kafka's thing we in here where i apply for one thing. I'm told them tonight for this and if i'm denied for this i should apply for another thing and then when i get to the second can thing. I'm told that i haven't been denied for the first thing i mean i really i mean. I'm just cross eyed reading these things in its review the g._a._o. Recommends that the ed departments simplify the application asian process and give borrowers better information to navigate such a complicated system for its part the department says it agrees with the g._a._o.'s recommendations dacians about how to improve the programs and that a number of those efforts are already underway corey turner n._p._r.
