Why Is Carmine, a Dye Made from Bugs, So Popular?

"Red Velvet cake and strawberry ice cream aren't only in the. They'll satisfy your sweet tooth. They likely share common ingredient made from a not so common source that gives them their red to pink Hue. That's Carmen a natural Red Dye, also labelled as cockatiel extract, e, One, twenty or natural, red dye four, and it owes its beauty to a teeny tiny bug, the female coach Neil Bug to be precise. In addition to its possible gross out factor, this tasteless FDA approved extract has a history full of. and. Intrigue a Betsy Ross even used this bright red dye to make red stripes on the very first American flag. The Koch Neil is a slate bug that feeds on prickly pear. Plants grown throughout Mexico South America southwestern United States, and the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain. The male Cockatiel plays its own unique role in nature, but it's the wingless legless female that interests dye makers. If you go looking for her, you won't find her vibrant red bounty on display. The female Koch Neal's grey exterior is covered in a white powder that protects her from predators as well as the scorching sun. And since the juice from CACTI her only source of nutrition, she boroughs in his. A bit stubborn about releasing her hold. In order to harvest the Koch Neil, the prickly pear pads are cut and brought to factories so that the bugs can be pulled out and processed, but it takes some serious people power. Approximately seventy thousand continentals are needed to create just one pound of die. That's a little less than half a kilo. Once harvested bugs are dried ground and mixed alcohol, solution or other compounds like borax. They give way to a vibrant long-lasting die that can be used to make colors from scarlet purple to pink to Peach. have been used to color everything from textiles to pottery, since the Neolithic period or New Stone Age with the majority, sourced from vegetables, plants and trees. Bugs have had their place to not only the Koch. Neil, another elusive die associated with wealth enroll status. Tyrian purple was made from the glands of snails. Neil bug is native to Mesoamerica. The AZTECS are believed to be the first to use Carmen to fill their lives with stunning shades of Crimson, when Spanish colonizers arrived in the Americas learned about Carmen and built enormous wealth by monopolizing the cockatiel market Spain kept the source of the color secret, and even made export the die a legal punishable by death. Coveted by the wealthy. The Royal Family is in the artist's crossed Europe. This die created fertile ground for contention. Those cumbersome and secretive production methods certainly made Carmen expensive. The car itself was an explosive part of Carmen's mystery and popularity. We spoke with Amy Butler. Greenfield author of the perfect read via email. She said red is the color of blood fired that end desire, and we can't help it. Respond to it on many levels. It makes her eyes dilate, and our breath come faster, and it's freighted with symbolic meaning. Also there are very few natural dyes that make a lasting bright true read so good ones had the value of rarity. Ounce ounce. Kacha new is the most powerful natural red dye in the world. That's why it was prized. When industrialization arrived in the mid eighteen hundreds, the demand for textiles increased dramatically and created a need for more cost effective dies. Chemists began to use petroleum and coal to formulate synthetic ones ultimately reducing the need for the Cockatiel bug. The shift towards synthetics pushed Carmen to the background, but it didn't disappear, and now it's making a comeback. Showing up on ingredient lists for anything from cake POPs to lipstick. Greenfield said when reports started linking synthetic grads to cancer and hyperactivity, and as people started taking an interest in natural foods in general, the market for catch. Neil began to rebound. So if Carmen is a natural product without the negative long-term effects of why did the coffee giant starbucks along with numerous other companies? Stop using it to add colour to their products. Well Carmen is safe for the majority of people can cause an allergic reaction, and besides that safety concern folks like Vegetarians vegans and people who keep kosher helped advocate for the change, but no matter whether you find eating a bug, appalling, fascinating or dangerous for such a tiny insect. The Koch Neil Bug has certainly left a vivid mark on culture, beating attractions, the beauty and power of red.

He directed two of the season's episodes moon dust and the season finale creed krittika welcome everybody. Although Pizza. Maybe maybe I can start with you. First of all congratulations on the recent BAFTA TV nomination for the show very exciting for us. Now we watched an an adult two seasons of his show with Tafoya Matt Smith. Leading the ensemble. And what's the always the design? Obviously you know. Take a lifetime. I suppose to to do the show any of the way we always planning on kind of two seasons apiece for these costs yes I think that's the short answer we were and that was there was a there was a time long ago where I had. I imagined it as three seasons very soon in early on in the process of pricing defy. I realize they needed more release state and and so It very quickly became middle. Couplets has seasons of the cost which Which is long enough Then I'm sure not long enough for us and Shaima had like such a incredible life since it first premiered. I mean It has become kind of Zeitgeist television. Show I mean it's you know it's talked about it every time a new season drugs. And what do you think it is about the show that people have attracted to? I really don't know I I'm relieved. We put a halt consoles into it. I think that the you know there is a way of looking back over the lifetime. I suppose it's really. It's interesting the fascination with her queen on on And the fact that she's been in everybody's lives in all parents lives in our grandparents live. So she's she's been the the she's been on every stamp in this country on every banknote for as long as any of us in all parents grandparents can remember and and so it is something that brings. It doesn't have a narrow constituency a It speaks to hopefully multiple generations and and bringing multiple generations together in the process. All uncovering discovering it. Enjoying it I mean unequivocally How how I got the people watching it you know. They're not what you get. In the way that they would traditionally there what she with all the members of that families people generations debate nuts nuts. Lovely now is done with You know the the Queen and the audience you know you. You'll you'll grasp of of the human side of these kind of larger than life. Stories has always been very keen. I think initially especially finding that line between Public was aware of what was going on. And then what? The royal family must have been feeling about the events that were taking place is something that I think is has joined particular fascination for people when you were researching the show. How how obvious is that Kinda stuff? How much work does it take to kind of tap into the to the human side the private side of these artists? The private side is often more of an act the of creative imagination because that's the side of their lives. That isn't minutes it to know so if if you take a staple of this show it's a relationship at the heart of it. It's the relationship between the Queen Unheard Prime Minister and they have these confidential meetings once a week and that's part of all unwritten die necessarily has to be an active imagination as those the stuff I in their private lives because every Alpha Paul to the Shaw Area of life of the Queen and most of the senior members of the Royal Family and the Prime Minister Beach. Every minute of that day. These itemized there as a matter of public record so finding out what they were doing and win is pretty easy. Working at what they Fulton felt is something that you know. We have to use our imagination. I think that's hopefully will wants from us. It is it to make sense of history. You sometimes need to use fiction and and the imagination and creativity raw. The you know history which is awesome in itself mold prejudice anyway go to the fact every historian has has a point of view now via. I'm very curious to ask you. You know you've played a British cream before obviously in the favor which won an Oscar and And you've certainly played Other real life figures living real life figures like Carol Thatcher. I'm thinking in the lady but what runs through your mind When you were asked to kind of take on the role of of the monarch who is his been sitting on our offering for as long as any of us have been alive. Daunting.

Tyler Thrasher: Being a Black Grower

"It's really nice to have you on the show. Tyler I've been full you sometime and dipping into your cost. The events of the past few weeks have somewhat crystallized in my mind. The fact that my show needs to be as diverse as possible, and so it prompted me to reach out to you and ask you to come on the ledge. What's it like being black in the? Realm of botany slash. Horta kept coach. Coaches slash plants at this very moment. What are you seeing that pleasing you? That's displeasing you in the world of of of plump man. You know I've never really been asked that. I mean I would say my experience as a grower and with plants. Is Different here in Oklahoma than it would be for say somebody on the West Coast at. One of the biggest things that comes to mind as I grow and collect CACTI, and succulents and one of the interesting observations I've made, is that a lot of people that growing collect can by and large be very conservative and historically here in the south in the Midwest. Those are always very very touchy demographics for me to be around as a black, American am. I have encountered handfuls of racist comments and remarks. Plenty of older white growers are surprised to see a black man coming up to their greenhouse. Even been told Oh man. There's not a whole lot of black people who grow CACTI and succulents. Those kinds of like seemingly seemingly innocent hand remarks at can make one. Very nervous when you're alone in a greenhouse with somebody in your just wondering, what are they going to say next? So that's been interesting is navigating. You know driving. An hour and a half out into the country to someone's greenhouse, then really hoping you don't see confederate flag or big trump sticker, which I have, and there have been plenty of times I've been very uncomfortable for the sake of looking at really cool plants, which is a sacrifice I'm willing to make, but. Other than that. There's a lot of diversity happening right now. Plant communities popping up online here and there and so the seems to be a lot of space. Online and in these forums and online groups in the plant community for people of Color, and for Glatt, growers, and also on the other hand I've seen a lot of racist remarks from people online because they have that Internet scream and there are a handful of growers that I've had to cut out of my circle or add to like you know a list like a blacklist. Of like people do not. These people are racist. Stuff that so. It is a little bit of give and take in as a black grower had to learn how to navigate that in know who to buy my plants from and who to support and vice versa. It's been interesting here because as as a white person in the UK. Navigating response to what's happened has been interesting My take has always been that. I mean and I found myself pointing the Meghan Markle of the royal family. The update you know the the bad thing to say to say nothing and I think that's what's been getting from. A lot of people on social media who into into planning on saying Oh. I can't say anything because I don't WanNa say something wrong and I don't really have a view and are those kind of. Co out site phrases a said was some kind of magic wall, but the. As if They they just want to talk about plants. And therefore they are able to just remain silent on this issue and that kind of frustrated me, but at the same time. You Know I. I've found it difficult to negotiate so i. do sympathize with them to some extent, but at the same time it's not hard to say black lives matter. That's not hunting to say. Black lives matter. That's not a that's not a stretch like we. Surely we understand enough and can see in a homeless been

A Manhunt on the 17th Centurys High Seas

"Steven. Johnson joins US now. He is the author of many books many bestselling books including farsighted. And how we got to now but he joins us to talk about. His latest book is called enemy of all mankind. A true story of piracy power and Histories. First Global Manhunt Steven. Thanks for being here but much having me. There are lots of exciting terms just in your title and subtitle alone. I WANNA start with those even though and we'll talk about this. There's a larger story that you want to tell with this book but let's begin with piracy because that's a fun word. What happened on September Eleventh? Sixteen Ninety Five. There's a kind of interesting bleak poetry to the fact that this happened on September eleventh. Basically the events that are at the center of the book is a clash at sea in the Indian Ocean between pilot. Ship led by a very mysterious figure who would become the most notorious criminal in the world. A guy named Henry Avery and a much larger Indian treasure ship whose name was anglicized as the gun sway and the translation of that into English is excessive treasurer or exceeding treasure. So they were being pretty conspicuous with maiming. This vessel in terms of the of treasurer on board and effectively. These two ships confront each other on September eleven sixty ninety five by all rights. The pirate ship should have been easily overpowered but to incredibly unlikely things happen a cannon onboard board that Indian ship explodes because of some kind of malfunctioning design which basically turns cannon into a bomb when it explodes in so instantly. There's this you know. Many people on Indian ship killed the deck catches on fire. And at the same time. The first cannon fire from the pirate ship manages to have this incredibly lucky shot where they split the main mast of the Indian chip in two which effectively disables at in in the water and so the pirates are able to board the ship they pull off this heist that in today's currency we be would be worth as much as one hundred million dollars so it makes one of the most lucrative crime some in the history of crime and triggers a global crisis that reverberates around the world. Okay before we get to that crisis because you would wonder why one active piracy would do that. Just general picture of the piracy problem at that time. I'm always taken aback by the way that pirates are these cute Nara dwells in children's picture books or like Johnny Depp for many people. But that's not what piracy was back. Then what did it looked like? And was this unusual. Well actually one of the origin points to this project for me was years and years ago. I mean something like fifteen years ago. When my kids were very young we went to Disneyworld and we went on the pirates of the Caribbean ride and it was right after nine eleven and I had this on. I was floating down this little canals. That ride songs are being song and everything. That's very Kelly. The that the pirates were the terrorists of the seventeen hundreds and sixteen hundreds right. They were these terrifying figures would show up out of nowhere and burn your village down and attack. The women and people lived in fear of them. Here was three hundred years later. And it's just a kind of a children's story so they'll link between pirates and terrorism. Which is something that runs kind of subtly through enemy of all mankind actually began on that. Disneyworld ride in some ways. But what's historically really important about pirates at this point in history and one of the reasons why this particular story has so much significance. I think is up until this point. There was a very blurry line in terms of the legitimacy of piracy so there was this other class of occupation. That was called being a a private here. And if you were a privateer from all outside appearances you're a pirate attacking other ships and stealing their treasure and doing all these atrocious things that seat. But as long as you weren't attacking if you were a British privateer as long as you weren't attacking British ships. You're within the zone of and people like Francis. Drake a couple of generations before Henry Avery. When often basically we live the life of piracy but then came back to England and was knighted and bought a giant estate and lived a completely legitimate lifestyle. And so in a sense what happens to this period because of crime for reasons we can get into. It's a turning point where the British crown finally has to take a stand against piracy. They have to basically announced to the world that they're not a nation of pirates the way they've been accused to be. Let's talk about what made this pirate attack so noteworthy. Obviously there was the hall but were there other things that made this a big deal at the time. There are a couple of big ones. I is the other element of the crime. This ship that they attacked was a ship that had been doing business and ports of call like Mocha in the red seat but it was also filled with religious pilgrims coming back from Mecca on a whole other level was kind of a Muslim like religious transport vessel as well and among those pilgrims were a significant number of women women in the Royal Court of Aranda. Who was the great grand mogul of India? The last of the moguls and this was an unusual thing. At the time right you would not see a lot of big vessels in sixteen ninety five. That had a significant number of women on board but there are all these female pilgrims on board and so when the pirates attack the guns way they find these women there and number of the pirates rape the women on board. Some of the women commit suicide jumping overboard to avoid being attacked. And so there's this kind of outbreak of the atrocious sexual violence that happens as part of the crime and of course WORD GETS BACK TO WRONGS. Zab that not only has a hundred million dollars of his assets been stolen but members of his extended royal family have been sexually attacked and violated and this all is crucial in terms of geopolitics. Because it's right at a moment in a time where there's a major economic transition happening in the world. There's a chapter in the book called two kinds of treasure and is basically. There are two different ways of making a fortune that are in conflict with each other here. There's a very old way which is represented by Aurangzeb which is have an autocratic dynasty tax year citizens. Sit On that wealth and pass it onto your descendants. That's what every most of the rich people in the world at this point where people who were members of some kind of royal family that had some kind of dynastic wealth. But there's this new way of making money that has just appearing in it comes in the form of this interesting embryonic. New Organization called the multinational publicly traded corporation and that was the east India company. The east India Company was the first company that actually had publicly traded shares. So that people could. Outsiders could invest in the company in those shares could go up or down in value and for the first time people were making money not just through the prophets of the business but through the increase in value of these publicly traded shares and that turned out to be the future. Right dot is how if you look at the one hundred richest people in the world today. The vast majority of them were people who made money because they had traded shares in a company. They found that their parents found it. So in a sense clash between these two massive economic forces and Henry. Avery in his little pirate ship gets right in the middle of it because once. Iran's UB here's that his money has been stolen in women have been raped he threatened to eject the east India company from India which is the main source of their income. They've been trading CALICO and chinse fabrics and so on and if that had happened if they've been thrown out of India the whole course of the British Empire would have been transformed. It's entirely likely that the British Empire would not have formed in in India in the subsequent decades. If the east India company had been injected. So why wasn't it? Attracted rings up puts a number of the employees of the east India Company under house arrest and threatens to execute them and they began a furious letter writing campaign back to London. Saying we have to find the pirate we have to bring him to justice and we have to announce to the world that we are not going to tolerate piracy anymore or else this whole incredibly lucrative business that the country is increasingly dependent on is just going to disappear and so. That's what triggers this global manhunt really the first one in

"To archie for the save with stories initiative which is helping feed and educate children in the US and around the world during a very difficult time. Of course we know. A lot of children rely on that main meal of the day to be at school. It's where a lot of the nutrition comes from and of course where kids are growing at such an important time for that to continue so with so many not able to school. Save the children campaign. Save with stories is a lot of high profile figures involved in Gen Ghana Jimmy Kimmel. And of course we still make and take part in that too. I don't know if you saw the video but it was very sweet and I think it gave us a little bit of an insight into our cheese personality. Who definitely knew what he wanted and what he didn't want video. It's really various books to the floor. I did feel like it was one of the longest videos we've seen of him on social media again. Normally we just get. I feel like one photo or a quick photo op video up in the field or something but this was sort of a lengthy e- instagram video. You got a chance to kind of see the little guy doing his thing. And he's he's grown up and he's a very high in raising what a year can do From sources this week of course they were in lockdown but Harry and Meghan was still able to have a very special day at home with 'em Meghan mate cakes cookies and cream. How helped decorate the room with balloons now. The king has a bit of an interesting story to it. And I must have had to google. This was saying Smash K. I should've known this. I'm embarrassed because I'm an American and apparently a huge trend in America for babies. But I don't have kids yet myself so I was totally in the dark. You mentioned this to me Omid taxes smash cake. How am I missing this? But as we both learned apparently it's a small cake for the guest of honor that they can smash as they eat it. I guess it's very common for first birthday parties. I mean it would make sense. I remember actually hearing a story of when I was a child. I smashed someone else's birthday. You're so ahead of the trend for it was cool. I would like to think that I started this but also for child to actually have permission to do it is a lot more. I somewhat similar to this when I was little. I think it was five years old and I was obsessed with dogs so we had a dog birthday party. But the smash cake version of this. You know thirty years ago was that We only used our faces and we ate them like dogs. I was really open now. That's a smash kick the second. Were outside lockdown. I need to see that burned by. Now Maggie's pleasure as always thank you for doing in keeping me company for our session. Both go have smash cake this weekend. Sounds good to me and I get to chat on and a big. Thank you to everyone that makes this show happen every week. Especially you guys for listening and leaving such great reviews as.

"royal family" Discussed on The HeirPod

"For all the latest goings on in the royal family. And the House of Windsor. I'm of course your host Omits Scooby I learned by myself in isolation trying to make things work on the technology front a this time round because we did have some issues last time but I do have some moral support and my sidekick he really ABC News Foreign Correspondent. Welcome back senior side Gig. I'm obviously at home as well isolated. But it's Kinda Fun. We all are slated. So it's sort of like we're altogether. Maybe kind of it. Is You know I think the sense of solidarity is strong at this point but you did have a little break away from the madness of the four walls of your name from Paris. And it felt was are yeah. We went to Paris. Pairs had one of the strictest quarantine isolation lockdowns whatever you want to call it in all of Europe and they finally after fifty five days started to ease their locked and so that easing started on Monday. We were in Paris when it happened. And you know it was just weird omit. I mean on one hand. It was fantastic because all of a sudden all of Paris came out of four again. That's fifty five days. If you were living in Paris or anywhere in about to have written permission slip to leave your house. So that's how strict it was really. Were not leaving so for them. All of a sudden they could leave their house and frolic about without a reason not having to justify themselves and people were out. I mean I went for a nice run along the Seine one night and there were just hundreds hundreds of people out in small groups even drinking a little bit and it was on one had exciting and energetic and then on the other hand just felt so weird. We haven't seen scenes like that months under see it again was jarring. I would imagine that it's almost like being reborn into the world again. You're taking things in his around here. I'm not sure how comfortable I would fail straightaway. But what is so beautiful about that and I saw the scenes in your reports on ABC News. Just how excited people were to be finding some normality and in their lives and of course even for those of us aren't who aunts in France seeing country finally get back to how it used to be as so hopeful for the rest of us. You know it does feel like over here. We're still a long way away from that but that is just such a promising sign. And that's a good point. I think you mentioned that. There's a lot of confusion and people are excited. But they're also nervous and scared and we heard that from a lot of people but it's such a good point you make being able to look to some of these countries that are opening up in different ways. It reminds you of this. Won't last forever. Their life is going on. There will be an out of this. I might look different than what life was like before hand but we are surviving reliving hopefully thriving in certain places while we're dealing with a crisis so slight light at the end of the tunnel might be difficult to get back and we'll have some ups and downs but we'll get through it together absolutely. What a great place to find a little bit of freedom especially in the high of some of the best food in the world. I'd imagine you didn't come back empty-handed at a lot of freedom and a lot of tea used a lot of Baghdad's a lot of Khorasan's maybe a little bit of why more cheese on repeat as your refrigerate so well stocks Spec in London so both. I've been lucky enough to go to Paris quite frequently for assignments since I started here about seven months ago and every time I load up on cheese from the Somali as I like to go get cheese and every time. My Husband's very appreciative then the next day. He's always like Maggie. Our kitchen reeks right now. Like we need to stop bringing back so much cheese because the smell just permeates out of the fridge and do our small apartment and he's like this whole place to stink stinks right now. We need it faster. You know. That's the that's me if you need some advice on how to eat. Rinse Charles actually took to his Clarence. House twitter account this week to share a recipe for cheesy baked eggs. Which is his right time. The tweet said that he is a proud champion of native British cheese. We may have to bend the rules a little bit here but I thought it was so interesting to see the Clarence House. Twitter Account. Step away from the usual content posting and share something. That was a little bit more. Reverend and lighthearted Of course stuck to what we know. Prince Charles for he spoke about where possible using organic ingredients British cheeses and supporting the industries that make them during the pandemic and I really think that that was kind of the message behind it and just recently the British cheese weekend in this country. So the timing of delivery. It's sort of funny so when we were in France the big push from French government officials. Have people eat cheese right now? They're making it a patriotic duty. Because lockdown people aren't buying as much cheese and so the dairy industry says they may have to get rid of in France alone. Five thousand tons of cheese so. I wonder if in the UK there might be a similar push. Perhaps there's actually more to the the cheesy breakfast story you know. Perhaps this will help encourage people to keep buying local support. Local farmers make sure that produce gets eaten not throw away things like Darier used so. It's kind of interesting how patriotism can tie into what we eat and if again that theme for all in this together whether it be British people buying British cheese to support the British dairy industry or the French people doing the same thing just supporting one another and on this note. I thought it'd be good to read some of the in greasy ingredients from the cheesy baked eggs recipe from Clarence House. Because if you if you're wondering was inches. E baked eggs. What's perhaps we all you would be correct to say every type of cheese There's thirty five grams of strong soft cheese. Okay there is eighty milligrams of double cream. There's an egg and a case all that wasn't enough there's also fifteen grams of hard cheese so you got your heart cheese. You got your soft cheese and you got your double cream. I mean it still like a well rounded breakfast meal it I love it the end it says optional charcuterie that should never be ov should never be optional. The only answer to that is yes. It's been really nice to see the royal family sort of how and finest full again this week through zoom or whatever platforms that they're using. I would say that the theme for this week is very much being one of praise and gratitude. I across all royal family members the messages that are being going out not just two people working on the front lines here in the UK but to people all around the world involved in this pandemic and fighting against have all received words of thanks from the Royal Family and Prince Charles who we were just talking about both him and his wife Camilla they shed a letter and also video thanking postal workers across the country because of course the British Royal Mail has continued. Its work every day throughout this pandemic of have all Korea Korea companies and anyone delivering packages about you but I've certainly been ordering fairmount online. But I think it's great that the acknowledgement goes beyond some of the more obvious places. And we're actually thinking of everyone that is really sort of taking a risk to put themselves out there for the benefits of a good planning. We've talked about a central workers quite a bit and obviously the women who are in the hospitals are incredibly important. And it's just it's hard to appreciate the sacrifices making enough but there's a lot of people on the frontlines right now including those postal workers. I mean and sadly I know around the world. There's been postal workers who've died in the midst of a pandemic as well so it's so so important to acknowledge them in to make sure that they're also held up as people that are really putting their lives on the line like you said and I love this video. They showed their postal worker as well. They kind of put a face to these people that are that are working for us during this pandemic and it was kind of sweep it was. I think we've really had a sort of like deeper insight into Chazan Camilla's lives. I think being able to see into but Cole great video insight the let the message of thanks to rule mail employs. That showed them receiving the packages themselves and it was again. It was sort of outside the front door of their home. And it's I guess it's that sort of more intimate personal glimpse into the lives of the family that we hadn't had before and of course that continued when all the family members are all many of the senior family memphis teamed up on a call or to various schools to nurses around the world to celebrate International Nurses Day. And I think that that day couldn't have come at a better time because I think we all every day or so grateful for nurses and medical care workers across the frontlines all over the world and this message from the members of the Royal Family. Really did just that yeah. It was great to see such a collective front right a collective unit of thanks coming from the Royal Family and not just them to I. It was great as well as other celebrities coming out for Nurses Day. I was actually on the island white for nurses day and we were outside of hospital. We were working story there and it was really moving. This whole group of administrative staff from the hospital came out. And they were socially distancing they were all six feet apart and they performed this dance that they had for the nurses and they all kind of yelled happy nurses day at the end but it was a great moment as you saw people at the hospital showing their appreciation for the other nurses also trying to have some fun also a reminder that it just like a very human moment and a reminder that people that were celebrating our quite human that are working on the front lines and so it was kind of beautiful and it's cool to see that the royal family is latching onto that spirit of enthusiasm and acknowledging the sacrifices well it was the first joint role effort that we'd seen from the kind of wider family members through zoom. I think we've seen them all sort of doing things separately but more. Interestingly to me was that this was the first time that we saw the queen break new ground once again you may not remember this back in nineteen forty. She gave her first public broadcast on. The wireless remind me I remember of course. But she gave us public castle wireless and that was speaking children at the Commonwealth in a landmark address and that was just alongside of black and white photo. And so here. We are eight decades on. And we have the Queen Breaking ground again at the age of ninety four at sharing the first ever broadcast of audio from phonecall private phone call that she had made and of course. This phone call was to thank nurses for..

"Latest goings on in the royal family. We haven't seen scenes like that months under see it again was jarring would imagine that it's almost like being reborn into the world again. It reminds me of this. Won't last forever. Their life is going on. There will be an out of this. I might look different than what life was like before hand but we are surviving reliving hopefully thriving in certain places while we're dealing with a crisis so slight light at the end of the tunnel might be difficult to get back and we'll have some ups and downs but we'll get through it together shortly. What a great place to find a little bit of freedom especially in the high of some of the best food in the world. I'd imagine you didn't come back empty-handed at a lot of freedom and a lot of tea used a lot of Baghdad's a lot of Khorasan's maybe a little bit of why more cheese on repeat as your refrigerate so well stocks back in London so both. You know. That's the that's the me if you need some advice on how to eat. Rinse Charles actually took to his Clarence. House twitter account this week to share a recipe for cheesy baked eggs. Which is his time. The tweet said that he is a proud champion of native British cheese. We may have to bend the rules a little bit here but I thought it was interesting to see the Clarence House. Twitter account step away from the usual content posting and share something. That was a little bit more reverend and lighthearted and of course stuck to what we know Prince Charles for he spoke about where possible using organic ingredients British cheeses and supporting the industries that make them during the pandemic and I really think that that was kind of the message behind it and just recently the British cheese weekend in this country. Call that she had made and of course. This phone call was to thank nurses for what she said. They're very important work. That theme continued across the whole video. So we had the Prince of Wales the Duchess of Cornwall the Cambridge's Princess and Sophie the Countess of Wessex all in this sort of very lively montage video calls we saw K and Sophie actually team together among call and I think that's the first time we've really seen them together on an engagement Speaking to nurses in seven Commonwealth countries and I think it showed a bit of their sort of the friendship between them as well because they were joking themselves about homeschooling of the more serious questions that they had about. Cova nineteen it was. It was a nice of break from what we've seen. I think everyone struggle at the moment is how do you keep zoom cools interesting? Because I about you I really feel like I've seen a lot of people through the lens of a Webcam and after a while zoom fatigue has the same feel after wall so to keep that content engaging an interesting especially for such an important day thought it was really it was a smart move and this also goes back to. What's been kind of fun throughout this locked down? You can find any type of fun. Is the fact that we've been seeing the royals in a New Light? And are we keep mentioning that but this was just another reminder that all of a sudden we're seeing them interact together and again. I know we see them. Do this. Events and organized events but this was almost a glimpse of them interacting on such an intimate personal level inside their homes using zoom. Something that we're all using right now and it just was awaited. Welcome us into this place. That's normally kind of kept pretty secret. Absolutely I think when we see reporting from engagements often. It's the camera footage of a sort of small snapshots within that engagement. We don't always get to hear the full conversations that they're having with people and so hearing Sophie and Kate Speaking Nurses in Sierra Leone in India. Malawi the Bahamas Australia Cypress and even back here in London it was. I think nice to see how they interacted with everyone but also to hear the kind of questions they're asking and to hear the answers to those questions as well about the varying challenges these nurses and medical workers facing on the ground sort of everywhere so again a really smart move and we didn't get to see every member of the royal family and but I think it shows how everyone is coming together at this difficult time. It was interesting too because I think sometimes these types of engagements can feel so forced but with something like this. I think we all have so many questions for our healthcare workers on the frontlines. There's still so much unknown about this virus that the interactions were actually felt genuine. Didn't they you know people were asking questions that I think are things that everyone wants to know the answers to right now and so in in a way felt more natural and human than sometimes other engagements can feel absolutely what was nice after this we also heard a little bit more about some of the other family members are doing and we had the princess. Usually and husband Jack Brooks banks actually being secretly helping the army here in the UK and also looking into ways that they can help hospitals so usually actually just very recently posted a few photos from a recent volunteer volunteer session that she and Jack had had of course as as you know the Salvation Army have been helping people in times of crisis and needs since eighteen..

Signs From North Korea Only Raise More Questions About Absent Kim Jong Un

"Enormous speculation as to the well-being otherwise if the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He's not been seen in public for over a fortnight missing key public events. Initially reports carried by daily N Que a media outlet run largely by North Korean. Defectors said that he might be dead or critically. Ill later reporting that. He'd undergone treatment for cardiovascular complications other stories circulating in the media said a heart operation had been botched by nervous surgeon with shaking hands. Now we know Kim is morbidly obese. He's reportedly a heavy smoker and drinker may be diabetic and suffers from hypertension. Both his father and his grandfather died from cardio related ailments. North Korea has been utterly silent on the subject but if he is dead will destabilize the state and who would take over John? Everard is the former British government. Signed Busta to Pyongyang. He's on the line. John Lovely to speak to you again. Is He alive or dead? I'm pretty sure he's alive. Not least because two days ago he sent a congratulatory message to President Ramaphosa of South Africa. Now I suppose it's possible that these messages are being sent out on his behalf but even though he's passed away but I don't think so that's simply not the way the North Koreans do things. But he certainly not around. The last confirmed sighting of Kim. Jong UN was on eleven April at which point he looked. Fine I mean he was hosting a his chairing a politburo meeting and he didn't look any worse than he normally does. But then the big shock. He failed to appear on Fifteenth April. The birthday of his grandfather and founding Kimmel soon every year. There's a big ceremony where the royal family all troop off to Kimmel. Psalms mausoleum to pay their respects not to do so is simply unthinkable surprised foreign observers and north. Korean draws must have dropped I mean the last time he disappeared for review for a substantial time if he had six weeks later walking with a cane apparently due to surgery on his ankle. Do you think we should assume that? This is health related He's not just having a luxury lockdown somewhere. I don't think we kind of humorous health related as you sit in your introduction there have been reports that He underwent heart surgery. That didn't go well. But the sourcing of those reports is really very wobbly. Indeed and it's quite possible that there simply wrong all do. Nathanson is that he hasn't been seen he failed to appear. added grandfather's birthday. But he's still messages. Is He. Sick it is. It's possible but if if so why then didn't he send a flower basket to his grandfather was in? Which is what you always do in North Korea in these circumstances also if he is sick what has happened to his younger sister. Kim Yo John. She didn't show up either. In fact she to US disappeared. So what a body victim has taken them both out. I think it's possible that the problem is not medical but political. Iggy means some kind of fracture within the regime. Yes that somebody has decided that it's time for a not exactly a soft coup but four. Kim's on to be removed from the immediate levers of power so he keeps his titles in the official reports of the messages that he has been sending out to vice presidents he's given orders full titles we continues to rain but we don't know whether he continues to rule and of course the South Koreans are saying they think he's in one sandwiches a port and seaside resort on the east of North Korea. What's he doing there? Wouldn't make sense if it's a medical problem because spills somewhere it would make sense if he's been arrested or is just in lockdown like the rest of the world why though e- during the worst of the pandemic he continued his normal activities and was photographed chiefly hugging people. Not a social distancing there now The pandemic and China is receding North Korea is claiming no cases. Why would you want to go into self-isolation matter? It doesn't make sense so John I mean I was going to ask you about who the possible people to take over from him. Off is being the obvious contender but this is. This is astonishing news that perhaps a soft coup has happened. What would that mean for the country? We don't know a lot of because if it has happened and we're we're we're we're we don't know this we're all guessing we don't know who has let it. It might be hard line as what it might be liberals They're all factions of in both directions at the royal court and of course a North Korean aunt saying anything at all I could easily produce a a list of possible. North Korean candidates who might be leading government for you but frankly it wouldn't be worth much so I mean we had. Obviously we thought that this the ruling would stay within the family. It is after all the world's only communist monarchy rarely could go to someone outside the family and if that is the case one name that seems to being bandied about is Tahoe's a North Korean defector. He's part of the the government in South Korea. He does seem to be readying himself for the challenge. I think if they were a unification of the two careers. Tim Ho Foolish not though. He's a buddy of mine so I'm biased. But he would probably play a significant role in this. I'm not sure that he would be offered or would see a leadership role.

Up Swag King of Thailand back whereas beaters and a half is coming up but the problem is like the really the solution here. The problem is then all the Maga- hogs I would be mad because they want the trumpster the royal family so that they could be some sort of like dual monarchy like Austria Hungary or something like I don't know I just have the two houses you know with both do like dueling public rituals that have dueling scandal sheets about various goings on and then everyone of these like bird. Brains could just focus all their energy on that. Show the perfect then we could have like like an actual government doing the fucking making socialism. And they wouldn't even notice. Yeah that's exactly it like. If you're like one of those guys who's like he's fed up. recapping Colbert her. And James Corden could become a royal watcher families of America. "Hi everyone listening to after hours. I'm young I mean you're and I'm Felix and we just decided that we're going to spend the episode talking about Fugitives Royalties Become Fugitives Felix. Since you're not on twitter I have to make you aware of the following. Which is young me made prediction that aired on Wednesday morning and kind of came to fruition like six hours later? Her and the twitter verse was a buzz with her predictive power because this was about the British royal family escaping to Canada. Tell us how did so what happened so nothing happened. We had to make predictions and you encouraged us to go big with our predictions. And so I thought. Okay I'm going to make a prediction. You know. Actually the thing I should say is it's about time I was right about something drouin enough stuff at the wall eventually. Something's going to stick. But so this is going to be a fun episode. Because we're going to talk about the Royal Family and we're GONNA talk about fugitives. So I'm referring of course to Carlos gone escaping the Japanese criminal justice system. Oh yeah well. The interesting in story sort of our tabloid edition have been waiting for the tabloid edition of after hours. Exactly have you ever been on the run from the law. I prefer not to discuss that. But.

"Hi Peter So. We're talking late Sunday but I know on Monday when the bears today. Prince Harry is sitting down with his his grandmother. The Queen and other senior members of the British Royal Family Prince William and Prince. Charles this is the first time they are meeting face to face since the announcement that there will be complex details to thrash out. How much official royal work the Sussex's will do in the UK and overseas? How much money they might receive from the Prince Wales once that public funding is cut? And what's expected to come from this summit I think it's being called the Sandringham from it. According at the Sandringham Summit. That's why I that catches on. I mean even if someone else wanted to do it as the Sandringham Sussex's summit or the success summit at Sandringham too many but I suppose the first thing to say is it's pretty extraordinary. It's taken five days just to get to this moment to thought that Harry would have wanted seen his grandmother since clearly it really. You know the anger with the way things went in terms of his announcement quickly but I guess it shows you that. They're not like any other family. I think that's quite an indication. Really of the Royal Royal Family is uniquely different to how we may operate within our family's identity. We can expect them to be some clear definite outcome. I think what they'll try and come up with as an indication of the way ahead Caveat though of course with that is that if Harry and I'm assuming Meghan we'll be on the phone from Canada if they just don't like what is on the table it is I guess not impossible to. They'll just walk away from the whole thing. I think it's unlikely given the I didn't think we'd end up where we are now now so quickly. I think we can rule it out. You mentioned that the Queen was disappointed and there have been all of these reports about how she with sideswiped by this announcement. How Prince Charles and William are furious? Multiple sources at the palace have told the BBC that no members of the royal family were consulted about this by Harry and Meghan. I'm also seeing reports that Oprah and the OBAMAS are advising Harry and Meghan and the OBAMAS. There's an oprah have denied this but a lot of this seems to be connected to anonymous sources and as somebody who covered this for so long for the BBC. How do you wade through through? What's true and what's not in a situation like this I think will be can accept is as close aversion to the truth is possible? Is that Harry and Meghan clearly. have been thinking about this for some time. It's clear that that was communicated to Charles and and the Queen as well and obviously William over a period of time over a period of time recent weeks. I think it's clear that what that side said. The sort of the family side said is okay. Okay but you know we. I need a bit more time with this and I think what is crystal clear. Is that on the day that they chose to announce they basically were trying to bounce their family. They went on to say we intend to step back a senior members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support her majesty the Queen and that that's what's caused the irradiation the pain they. They were presenting them with a fatal complete. They were saying. This is the way that we are going to be royals. In the future. And that is what engendered engendered the the irritation and the anger and the hut over many decades. The roles of Wash Pentti does linen in public. But it's pretty rare for the McQueen to do say it's pretty unusual was pretty unusually distracting the unusual the statement to come out from Harry and Meghan then an hour an hour and a half later for that statement from Buckingham Looking in Palestine. Come out which was basically saying you know. Hold your horses this. This isn't a done deal and this can't happen that quickly. The statement essentially said we understand their the desire to take a different approach. But these are complicated issues that will take time to work through. Why is this such a complicated issue with if they would just walk way? It wouldn't be complicated. What has made it complicates their attempt to sort of have a third way? What critics are saying their attempt to have their cake and eat it? That's what makes it terribly terribly complicated. Because they're envisaging a future again even when you read all of the details on the website. There isn't this. That's missing in terms of concrete facts. Six and I suppose what my concern is that a lot of what is on their website. I suspect was written by people who don't have a deep understanding of the institution that is the British monarchy. Okay the website is Harry and Meghan explaining how they think the new roles are going to work splitting time between North America and the UK staying in the newly renovated tit frogmarch cottage with their security. Still paid for by the taxpayer. So the the challenge will be you know. How do you go from being Harry and Meghan on a Monday Sunday where you're in? Let's say the United States of America representing the Queen flying the flag for Britain. And then on Tuesday you'll private also semi-private Harry and Meghan earning money for your cells representing company exor representing company. Why so that's that's the sort of? That's the real problem. The wise one of the many many many many problems but it's how does the UK tax payer feel about all of this and how great is the risk that in they desire to earn money and where we talk about money. It's we're talking about. I watering sums of money that they could potentially on that. But what is the risk. The those commercial deals may damage the institution of the monarchy. And I suppose if you if we step back from it if you let's say Prince Charles because the queen doesn't travel anymore but if the Prince of Wales goes on an official state visit to the United States of America. He's there to fly the flag for the United Kingdom. Right under this deal for Harry and Meghan even if they go to the United States America and they meet a whole range of people concern will be in focus. The intense focus the media in the future might be on well if they've met MR MR or Mrs X.. Are they also trying to not only fly the flag for the UK bought help themselves with any deals or any money. They need to earn in the future. That's the that's the really tricky one of the many tricky.

"Say it so many times during the bachelorette where he'd be like Han like hand. Look he was willing tape Hannah and and then he did it to Hannah Brown at the end. He was like all Hanna Hanna. Brass really likes the. Yes then saying hanging out loud. You gotta say Hannah an I think just to make separate I share and if you come in like introducing yourself as an you want everybody calling you hand and get because there's so many Hannah's there how she's supposed to be different and she panaji and Hannity our good friends yeah. I saw a story about that right. Had A G posts on her story about them. Yeah and then the next out of the LIMO is Sarah. She literally got fifteen seconds. She's a medical radiographer twenty four. We're also from Tennessee. She talked about having butterflies. There she goes back into the mansion. Then next was Lauren a Marketing Executive Twenty Six from Glendale California first time. I don't know if this is the first time. It's the first time I can remember of somebody wearing a jumpsuit out of the Limo. Plus it was an a plus. That's a very good jumpsuit. I I I've I've seen it as well. I don't think that that does not everybody is talking about the dresses and this and that the jumpsuit. Plus I'd I want to say it but I mean harass look great jumpsuit. Like if you have a good ass jumpsuits away to a good anonymous strategy being completely silent. Because I don't remember the top of my Gosh darn early joy. I think I'm must have been looking at my phone or something. Yeah Yeah I split. It was honestly it was a split second she walked away. You could tell it was the jumps. Yeah I think I missed missed a good power suit. Quick Second I missed it which I'M GONNA have to go back and watch it now. I need to see the suit. It was like it was full a Like bedazzled Latte jumpsuit. It was awesome Victoria. P was the next we talked about it before. She said that her niece always tells her too. Happy Dance. SCURRIES scary away. They did aware dance. Victoria P was like doing so well and they did that where dance and I was like. Oh God that was kind of awkward made me very uncomfortable. Redeemed redeemed herself throughout the night. Though oh for sure that that was the only when I saw that I gave it a big no. Yeah like Greek girl bad limo entrance. Yup It does your nervous next is McKenna. She's a fash fashion blogger from Canada. I think McKenna is the youngest girl on this season. She's twenty two. Oh and she liked just objectified the shit out of Pete like she was just like. Oh let me look at you from all angles did a circle around him he was I m up down just that and that was it. That was kind of just like let me let me look at Ya. When there's so many entrances? What else are you supposed to do? Yeah what can you do when you get up there. Yeah Yeah I feel like I've thought about it in the past like if I were during the Bachelorette season vows on the show. What would I do for a limited? I have no idea. I don't know what it would be but I don't know if I would. I wouldn't do anything. I don't think I would do all these girls. Doing pilot. Puns airplane plans. I think I'd steer away from the L.. Because the way you're GONNA stand out by not doing that. I think everyone plans together. Might just be like a normal person. I think that'll might stand out the most on a show. Hey Yeah what's up. Nice to meet you. You really looking forward to seeing you inside and then that's it. Yeah you know I sometimes feel like I would be so nervous I would be the girl that would be like bullied by producers to do something stupid and there's always like the girl like that it was not that grows idea to bring cow. Nobody like she was like you know what I'm gonNA bring a cow like somebody like. We need some weird. We need some a girl doing some weird shit and they found a cow stuffed in a piece of luggage Mike. There's not a choice. There's not gonNA get into luck. Got Dr Dressed up. This is the best I can look. What am I going to do now? And they're like you're going to get in that piece right there like there's this weird toys we've heard in the past of girls were made to like dress up who who did want to dress up but they were told that they showed dress up and then you know they go home the first night. It's just what is just what happens. Okay after McKenna was Corozzo. We talked about it before They pinky promised each other to remain true to themselves. Honest with each other and always dance like no one's watching. That was another other very awkward. DANCE MOMENT I don't know why this keeps happening wasn't a fan of the day to day one. Don't don't force me into a picky promise right. I don't thank you Pick anybody at ten seconds and we'll get to it but like the Pinky promise and then there was like a handshake thing and spoiler. We're by Marissa. Went home so none of these things. That's why you can't force someone into a Pinky promise they're forced to break it an hour later. Okay then we have Kelsey see who is. I think she's just a stylist. She's twenty eight she's from Des Moines. Shoutout showed Iowa. Do you have any Iowa. Iowa loyalty to her liquor. You rooting for her. Always always running for the. Yeah I if if she goes far I'm going to be really high. She thinks Hannah made a a big mistake leading. Pete goalless what you said him and then she walked inside and then we had our flight attendant. Where like Victoria's secret wing? I call them Walmart Wings because they were they were knockoff wings. Maybe that wasn't her idea either but if they're like if they're like hey we want you to wear are these wings you gotta be right now in was definitely her idea only because she hitting she said. I'm a flight attendant Europe pilot. I figured I would just wing it like I feel like when you you have a weird like rehearse line that I think that might just. She's over the top like the wings. Weren't that crazy if they probably obviously those wings herself. I think you're right. Yeah producers gave her better wings she got better wings they were the windmill production. Like cheated cam pact. On her supertalk I think those wings could have been could honor roll that over stuffed in. Yep Okay then we had two more flight attendants come through a unit thought. She was special. She was not Jada Meghan both both flight attendants and then there was Madison. We said had you know from the basketball player from Auburn. She came in unlike a giant paper airplane. She said I successfully land in my planes. Hopefully I'll have to do is land your heart. Amien fine sure a good cheesy cheesy line works it plays. She had a metal detector. She was like I'm going to need to do a private screening inside something about a large large package. Boil back it really did start to escalate really escalated fast She an Cheyenne. I don't know how to say her name. We're going to have to make an Sheehan. Okay okay she I think she's from Vegas biggest. She is a administrative assistant. She gave him a BARF bag. She's saying you know. I think she said like you're going to have a lot of nauseating conversations. Here's a BARF bag. I'm going to go back and something. I said earlier when I said to avoid the airplane stuff. Yeah BARF bag one. I liked. That one felt clever to me. You're going to be talking to a lot of people are gonNA a lot of awkward conversations. Yeah it's going to be nauseating here's a bar looking like. She didn't like it. Am I see I can never tell all my face. I never really realized that. I'M GONNA face no I just. Sounds like bar bar sounds. Yeah yeah that's a good point. Okay so horny courtney was for you. Good thing there's no joke saying. Thank God oh all-male wouldn't that be funny if there was one moment where they caught like a bad accidental on camera and they used it and then there was just like can't even say it. Yeah that'd be so fun I might be borderline. You guys look like how is that. Never never happened. They let them out. Oh let her. Maybe because let's say you get thirty guys in one room there's a lot of farts that's what I'm saying. Just a ton and people can make fun of far jokes. But your house still play about all the men in the office farting aw. Oh God I didn't need that. Okay Anyway. Moving on Courtney was necks. She's a cosmetologist from Florida. She rides in on like a little kid. Did Toy plane. What sucks for her? Was I think like Pete thought it was going to be something really cool then. It wasn't like they had the people with the orange things where they direct or the headphones and the headphones and he was like. Oh my God some girls tag bringing in a plane right now. Alexa be so sick and it wasn't okay Pete. Somebody's flying in on a video of I saw. Yes when the Little Guy Wheels in on the bike saw when he I think he was a little disappointed. Okay then next was Kiara who popped out of the suitcase. She's a nanny twenty three years old from Georgia. I don't know how the hell she fit into that suitcase. It did not look that big and then I I was looking like maybe there was something underneath that she could fit in. But I think I think you if you really try to convince her suitcase. Same same with me like I think. Yeah I really really tried now. If we actually got in it you know what I mean. We always say oh..

"And Meghan Markle are. You're out on the royal family out. They are stepping. Away is what they said. I'll read their and scrammed posts. They posted posted on their on their instagram account. which if you're not following you start following because maybe they have they don't have the same role restrictions is and they can start posting on their social media more? Maybe they'll get their own accounts. Maybe Meghan Markle. We'll get her instagram back. I'm sure she's been dying for that right to speed normal. Just like to get her Own instagram account back. which I mean? She probably does have one that she can use secretly but one that she can use publicly where she doesn't have they don't have to be like super professional all the time they wrote. After many months of reflection and internal discussions we have chosen to make a transition this year. You're in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as senior members of the Royal Family and works exit become financially independent while continuing to fully support her. Majesty the Queen It is with your encouragement particularly over the last few years that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the UK and North America continuing to honor our duty to the Queen. The Commonwealth and our patronage is this geographic balance one able us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born while also providing family with the space to focus on the next chapter are including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step. In due course as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty Queen Queen the Prince of Wales the do Cambridge and all relevant parties until then please accept our deepest. Thanks for your continued support the Duke and Duchess this of Sussex. So they are they're out. They're out so the rumors were true. This whole thing I I need so many more details like I have so many questions of how this is going to work like. Okay they want to you. Work towards financial independence. Okay does that mean that. They're not going to be taking like the royal family money that the taxpayers pay in the UK are those was knocked. Are they not going to be using that anymore. They completely on their own I've been talking with Kelly keys. 'cause you know Kelly loves royal family we have that we love the royal family and she was just like what about security like are they gonna get mobbed they still get the same real security where they're going to live where they're going to do like it's just so many questions. Yeah I feel like the questions are endless. Yeah you guys are way more into the royal family than I am. I don't really understand. All of the logistics and go into the royal family never really cared about them until who I met you. Thank you for introducing. No kidding I mean obviously knew about the royal family. I didn't actually really pay attention but I did. Start paying attention and in the past three years and it always seemed like ever since. Megan came in the picture. There were rumors about how they didn't get along with the rest of the family. Family and I wanted to believe that that wasn't true but I wanted to believe it was true at the same time. So we get the drama. Yeah and it looks like it's happening. It's just know why. What height right right? What happened between the family? The you guys had to stop because clearly some shit went down and I don't even know if it's just the family but it might also be like it constantly constantly getting hounded by the British tabloids and the news like they can they she is gone ripped apart part time and time again. They can't do anything right. She's wearing the wrong this. She's saying the wrong thing so many so many things. I'm sure they eventually got fed up and I'm also assure a lot of people will put this on Meghan mackinaw married mega now. They're like the whole thing. But Harry has kinda China always been like the royal bad boy you know. In his younger years he was breaking rules getting caught. There's tons of instances where you I thought like. I don't really think he likes having to do all this royal stuff and maybe he and Meghan the two of the combination of them were like why. Why the hell are we doing this? Now what are the steps when you want to walk away from the row. I didn't even know because this this has not really happened. Before at this levels. The family history raised dented. Move that the grandson. Dan Son of the Queen is just like Nah. I'm I'm going to go back to America. Not or whatever. People think they'll probably be in Canada because they these spend a lot of their time in Canada and that you know he i. It's that's what I'm saying. I don't really know what the steps are. It's also like do they have to give up their titles. Probably not they still stay who they are right because if you are that per yeah John Right but it's also like they didn't come out saying we denounce our titles and we will no longer be the duke and Duchess like you know of Sussex. It was like we're we're just stepping down from some of these responsibilities and creating a new idea of what our royal role can be. I guess but but how do you know Kate and will feel see. That's that's now. The whole family dynamic is crazy because will will can't don't go anywhere because you want it goes Elizabeth Charles and and then we'll like once he the has that direct line of the kill will be the king yes like once. Elizabeth is down with her reign of a bazillion ears. It wouldn't go to Prince Charles who was already quite not not very old pretty old and then after that it would be well. Oh Oh so Harry. Ever had a time before he's king. Yes but Harry has no way of being no the king unless there was an unfortunate fortunate passing of members of the roof and is that only because will is the firstborn son and that's it firstborn son. That's what's the catch like the same thing. Now I was getting into real hypotheticals here. You know now you have Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and they could be living their regular in life who knows he said financial Independence like maybe Meghan is going to go back to acting. I'm sure they'll be continue doing. All their charitable things like they said in the statement. You think Meg's go back to acting. She could she she totally could. She could go back to acting. I saw Hilar- one of the top comments on their actual instagram post. was someone saying Meghan. Markle will be starring as herself Meghan in season six of the crowd like so you never know maybe she does want to go back to acting. Maybe she doesn't like if they are serious serious about cutting off that the the money they gotta be doing something right because I mean they have money but they're obviously still getting money. Yeah Royal Family. There's no way they're not part of the royal family but they're saying Arbin towards financial independence. What happened between them? I need to know what broke the Royal Family Heart. But I'm just that's what I'm wondering. Give us the juicy CD to also think about like the next generation right so like Archie George Charlotte like pre kate and wills kids. They're going to have cool crazy crazy. Cousin Archie who is limited up doesn't have to deal with any of the royal duties towards going to be like well shit. I'M GONNA be King. I can't do anything and Charlotte and Louis could be like. Well Damn maybe maybe we'll just quit too. Yeah and then the whole World Family Despites Texan Kelly and was like Zip beginning of the end of the royal family and she did not like that. I don't I think that more could be. This is once you let one go. You can't take other ones that they can't somebody of that stature be like you know what kind of job with this and the and it happens other people could totally do it. So we'll see what happens but this this is is pretty huge. I would love to know what the Queen thinks. I need to know what the queen things I feel like. The Queen in is probably cursing them out. I need in a very classy way. Oh man she can't be pleased. This is her life. Oh Surf family. It never happened before and need behind writing. Look at this and sorry. I'm on the blind. Never Watch on the royals. Yeah it's it's like you never want to be like I'm sure as the Queen. She's never wanted her family. I also get a lot of this from the crown which is not great because it is is it so all of the television show giving me from a fake show. We'll know the craft. It's they're based on very real people and the lineage is all the same Komo. The story lines are based on true events but I would think she would be so pissed that anybody in her family would kind of break the mold a little bit and you know we. They're having all these rumors about Harian will kind of being on bad terms and nine Harry kind of talked about it and that documentary and kind of gave the classic. You know. We'll always be brothers. No matter what line which is code for we're not talking right now like whenever you like You know well we'll always brothers like shit. You guys hate each other right. Ceiling tying us together. We're always going to be brothers. Yeah mean cates cates. It's gotta be like well. I mean come on let me out. Yeah she's going to get to do all these other things. Although it's once again is it that like what's what's the big deal. I mean with hairy. And what's the deal. But you know Harry and Meghan you have been pushed so far for you know since they've been together now then I don't know what anybody thought like do they. Everyone just think they were going to stick get out for the rest of their lives. Being pretty miserable like remember that interview with Meghan went viral and she looked miserable. She was just talking about like how sad she is it. What did he thinks you're just going to do that forever? I kinda thought so. Yeah not that I would hope that for her but I thought the Royal Family Zach. Ah That's why this is like do this now right. That's why this is so shocking and yet not not shocking. I don't know I don't know how to feel. I'm I'm very confused. I just what if they got their own reality. TV show would love. God read my mind. I was going to say that right. I would love a reality. TV show. They need A. They need a quick way to make money. Boom I mean people are going to be hounding them to get.

"Quitting the royal family kind of sort of moving to Canada moving to North America which is important. There's been a lot of rumors. They are going to move to Malibu Bel I I honestly think that they will so. The news came on On their website on instagram today Tuesday to know today's Wednesday. Oh my God. I'm so excited. I don't even know what it is on Wednesday. I mean there's a very intricately worded statement that we're going to go through word by word because there's a lot to talk about about but the gist of it and the hubbub is that Harry and Meghan are no longer going to be in the royal family in the way that they have been up until now let's get straight into their statement. Go Line by line great. Let's go personal message from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex Great Straightforward Enough After many months of reflection and internal discussions Russians have chosen to make a transition this year and starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. Okay this is important within this institution within institution edition and we'll there are other clues in a statement but they are definitely trying to stay in some way if not attached then like related to the royal family. I don so page six. We actually Believe it or not this morning upon waking up Amanda and I were discussing a page six report that they we're considering moving to Canada and and is that and even giving up their toddler. HR each titles. Yes and come back to that and so there was. I think people knew this was coming coming out. Obviously if you then go to their website if this were the NBA and it was free agency. People would have seen that. There was an update coming to their website and everything that happened with abroad when he went back to the cavs Twenty four fifteen but anyway they clearly were planning this. I think that the within this institution means that they will not happy giving up their titles. Yes we they have not mentioned their titles anywhere in the statement and let's get to the next sentence we intend to step back as quote. There's senior members members of the royal family. Okay and worked to become financially independent. Well the financially independent is like honestly we're going to spend twenty minutes. Let's just talk about. The step is senior. Your members of the Royal Family that this senior in quotes is really important. Because they're not saying they're quitting the royal family and they're not saying anything about their titles and about the HR h status Addis which is designated entirely by the Queen or the sovereign is the case. Because it will eventually be Prince Harry's dad and to that point over the last few weeks There's been a lot of photos released by the Queen Ambae The Cambridge man in all of those photos including the Queen's wedding. Excuse me Christmas address and the photo of Prince George cooking. Yes in all of those photos. It's very specifically only been the Queen and Philip Charles and Camilla willing will and kate and their kids and so something that we've talked a lot about in and this a lot with the Prince Andrew stepping back when he had his horrible interview. Is that Charles. And William have been credited with advocating for streamlining the royal family and four kind of making things smaller and so I think if you go back and look at the last month so you can see that. In addition to the Sussex announcement the senior members of the royal family have been making a point that like the heirs are the ones who matter. Yes yes and you know. It's interesting because on the one hand after the whole Prince Andrew Debacle and with Prince Andrew Stepping back there was a report that Prince installs was planning to define the senior members of the Royal Family Upon his ascension to the throne himself and his children and grandchildren and that would include Harry the Harry and Meghan and their children if you think about it in terms of the current generation everyone but Charles is not really a senior senior royal like with all respect. Princess Anne who rarely works very hard does a lot of charity appearances but fucking Olympian yes. She's not in in the mix if you you know. We talked about that photograph of everyone. I believe at the Queen's Jubilee or there is you know there was some sort of one of their many appearances with the whole family but they were all seated according to hierarchy and like Princess. Anne is not in the picture they the siblings of them are monarch or the air. Get cropped out so in a Lotta ways they were never really gonna be senior royals Raina level that will in Kedar or Charles Charles and Camilla by nature of how this stuff works. It's interesting because Megan has just become is so popular and such as a media sensation that they they were just kind of floating in this in this limbo of like not within the institution having the recognition that probably like outside the world. Everyone else is giving them. Yeah Yeah I have a question for you. How long do you think this has been in motion kind of looking back over some key events including the recent photos which were all really specific affect the crown being okay with Harry and Meghan taking their six week break including Christmas to miss the Sandringham Walk Right? Harry Meghan special. Aw I I don't think Andrew's quote unquote car-crash interview was Nestle related to this. But there was a few months ago. There was a separating of the houses of Cambridge and Sussex they moved. I think like it's easy to build a narrative. In retrospect you like all these things have led to this moment but how many of them do actually have led to this moment. Will it's kind of thing I was talking talking about I. I think that this the nature in which they're doing this and specifically the choices they're making about the media which we'll talk more about financial independence and And and the way that they are making this announcement are in response to last six months in the last year and to Megan's popularity and to press attention in and also the like deep invasion of their privacy via the press and and the Prince Andrew and the way that they are kind of reassessing what the monarchy is gonna a b going forward if it exists but I do also think some of this was inevitable. They were GONNA have to figure out Harry's position to you William and Charles and the queen some of his succession. Yeah and and and it was inevitable and it was likely that they we're not going to be as front and center as well and Kate because will is the air in this bizarre hereditary. Yeah Institution and also you know there is also a lot of sort of bombastic coverage by the dissolution of the FAB. Four Will and Kate and Harry Meghan and part of it also is just like everyone everyone growing up in sort of like you know Harry getting married and starting his own family and having a kid and then you know as well as kids get older like their lives as parents chains like. There's just just like sort of a certain level of natural evolution here that because it's the royal family it's impossible to see such but if you took us back like well this is kind normal for families as they nest and grow right and to the extent that these are jobs which again is like a very bizarre thing that they are born into a family but then being being a member of the family as a job but that actually is the case for the royal family like will job and Kate's job is a very different from Harry and Meghan job and will only that difference will only increase going forward. Yeah so you know they were some of it is just a thing business and but it's just wrapped up a and all of this family drama muscle and the gossip which number one. We're very interested in but also keeps attention in them rolling. Yeah so they participate in it and it just it. It's hard to. It's hard to separate from like a soap opera. Yes absolutely but they are. Part of their job is participating soap opera right. Yeah absolutely and that's like a lot out of the photo impress strategy which again will come back to you. Yeah okay so next. They also say they will work to become financially independent. Shout out to the lawyers for wording this. This is just a tremendous choice of work to become financially independent. It's like they'll put their best effort forward with your measurable A- At no point they promised to be financially independent At any future they're going to work on eventually becoming being financially independent. I read this as a hedge so that when the as they continue to accept taxpayer money to fund their life. There's not. There's not like a huge eyebrow raising which honestly like isn't really worse than what many of the members of the royal family have been doing for hundreds of years but like just in this since they. Are you know charting their own course. It's it's more suspect but it's like they don't have to immediately stop taking money. Yeah I I think that's true though I am curious. About how much taxpayer money they will take versus like private money from the Queen and Charles's income which can and at the same thing. It's he at some point. They have like this immense private private wealth it's inherited because of their status in England and it is all taxpayer money but putting that aside. There's a there's a civil list and the government does give a certain the amount of money to the Queen For her public right for like Meat Nansen Palaces and public appearances right and I think that like and will and hairy are somewhat they're like reimbursed quote unquote. They're paid for it right and I suspect that that may cease. I Bet I bet that they will continue taking money from Charles Because the other thing is that I don't understand royal money I just don't get it. We'll we'll see they're not at at his up until now they've not been allowed to like work. They're not allowed to have jobs where they take. You know yet or salaries right. So I I think the other thing that there signaling with this is that they may try to start doing that. Right like Could mega back acting if she wanted to. Yeah I'm more should. Could she run for office because they do paid appearances to. I paid appearances that sort of speeches. That sort of stuff where they're actually allowed to accept money because like if you look at how much money like the Clintons and the Obamas make on their appearances like that came up during the two thousand sixteen election that Clinton's appearances at Goldman Sachs and whatnot. I don't want US yes. They have the same impact as people. They are as famous and so they could certainly command the same dollars for like appearing universities and private companies. And whatever I mean the whole like speaking appearance economy is like kind of under disgusted media. But they're so much money in it so much entire agencies or only for booking appearances. Yeah and I think they certainly could be a part of that whether they will and whether it's like a quote good look for them to be doing it especially while they're dedicating themselves to charitable work also if they're still maintaining eighteen in the title. Yeah I think if you're call you've watched the crown poor I've but there there's a major plot point that Once they kick the the the old king out Uncle David as he's known the Duke of Windsor. He's not allowed to work right and so they basically pay him off right there like you get an allowance every year to stay out of the country and and not working not draw like draw attention to the royal family right because I just I think we you know I think people joke. It's like the financial independence thing but there are so many ways that Political figures make tons of money once. They're out of office that they would have access to that. They've had to decline that like by saying they're they're working towards financial independence. Hadn't like start doing those things and just make a ton of money. Yes but I think people are just laughing at it because it is you know they're grownups. Yeah and they're like extremely wealthy in the in the sense that means we're going to try to stop paying tax payer money. They should be allotted. I think they will continue like roundabout to take some taxpayer money. I like you you were joking about frog more. Yeah and what happens to it. I'm I would bet so much that they continue to live where they want to. Yeah I yeah I guess so as well like they put so much into that if the reports are correct they put so much into the renovation. Like she just like leave your dream home. In the English angled countryside seems weird. Yeah and I also think they're not they haven't said anything about titles they have made a point in the statement which will continue to go through. Yeah of clarifying that. They're not leaving the royal family that they're splitting their time from between the UK and North America. So we don't think they'll be totally gone you know. And that means that they still like they'll still show up on the balcony. Yes they they basically want to have their own rules. Yeah which is kind of what they're doing until I commend it honestly. I sort of think like a lot as we've discussed this really contributes to your theories about the future of the monarchy like a lot of what the royals go through is arbitrary and like self-imposed and so like why not change the rules. If you can absolutely and again to the extent that it's the only way that it will make sense going forward. I really applaud them. Yeah I'm I'm curious to see whether it will work but let's keep going through the statement they went on to say. They'll continue to fully support her majesty. The queen which kind of gets back to remaining family is with your encouragement particularly over the last few years we feel prepared to make this adjustment Okay thanks you're welcome. Yeah I I was happy to encourage you. We now plan to balance their time between the United Kingdom and North America continuing to honor our duty to the Queen Commonwealth and our patronage is so we think North America instead of Canada. uh-huh is crucial here. Because that paves the way for Malibu yes which Megan's mother does live here in California and shingles English people love California. Everyone's California or I do you know if I can speak for you. Some of it is just being closer to your mother mother. While raising a child you know who would want to be that far away from from their family..

"Welcome back to the airport guys. Seven days is come around is black Friday as we were caught there so I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving and now busy picking up bargains online. I'm joined by I. Ice voyles producer. Lizzie Robinson this week. Going to be helping me navigate. What has been quite chaotic busy week week? It has been of course as we record this. The Sussex is far away. They are on their on their break right up until Christmas Christmas and send that they celebrated Thanksgiving privately with a close family which is lovely and amazing to think. This year was the celebration Asian of their two years then outside engagement I know I saw post Harry and Meghan shed new photo from an an outtake from one of their wedding photos taken by Lexie. Leave a Mirsky on their instagram account this week and it just reminded me how long is being since that day. The I remember driving at a very fast but legal fees from Oxford because I was out of London at the time and we got the confirmation that they're engaged in about ten o'clock in that and then they had that you take cool a couple of hours later in the sunken garden at Kensington Palace. Bitterly Italy cold But Yeah Lot's happened since then it is. The cold is definitely one of the things that we have to contend with as royal correspondent wants people think that it is such a glamorous job that you all with the royals wherever they go swimming in and out of palaces and great great venues search in the way that they do but unfortunately that's not the right. We've normally been made at least an hour ahead of them. Exactly what uh-huh standing around standing out in the cold is my. I'm just getting over a cold and sending out in the cold is my absolute worst thing about covering royals. Because there's so much Eh. Throughout the winter I'm forever freezing. I find it so difficult to file copy from my phone when my hands seizing up in the bits of frost that that we have. We're always have here. It's pretty cold now. Not being dramatic. I was talking with someone else Earlier this week about okay so how we stay warm throughout all these cold roll engagements and I have. I don't think you've heard of this before when I mentioned it to you earlier but sometimes I bring a piece of cardboard and our stand on that and it was actually one of the other world correspondents. That told me about this trick. I I can't wait feet Peter I it's it's just a small piece of cardboard and it's only if you'll somewhere for a long period of time you just keep it in your backpack but it stops the cold from traveling up from the sidewalk through your of your shoes grounded Know exactly you are stuck too often are the how warm is mega. I I remember reading a story about how making gifts hand woman's to that we used to give an woman's to the gods at Kensington Palace. One of her friends visit her home when she was living in. Nottingham Cottage kept a box of them in the corner of a hallway and a friend was like what. What are those folks? It was literally a box. Like eighty. Eighty hand warmers immigrants. Gives them to the gods like whenever I walk past I just hand them out because they last disposables they last for a certain time. Yeah Yeah So. She knows she knows how it works. She knows we're called. We've got a lot lot worse to come. I think yes but it has been a busy week coming up on the show. We're going to talk about president trump pretending to the palace when the queen hosts reception for NATO leaders that has been announced record full schedule from Paquin Palace Prince William is heading off to Amman and Kuwait's for four day visits. That begins this weekend. That's his first time in both countries. So we're going to be breaking down what he's GonNa be out and we're going to be deep diving into the effect that Prince Andrew's departure from his public. Gt's have had on the monarchy okay because the dust has far from settled. Let's being a lot of a lot of fallout this week from charities and initiatives that he's involved in and that we can but before then Cambridge's have been quite busy this week Not all of it. Public Engagements Kensington Palace. Confirmed confirmed yesterday that the Duchess of Cambridge has spent the past two days this week at a hospital in E. K. at Kingston Hospital which is an NHS hospital slope Learning more about that work as early years. Intervention project is basically taking a look at how now our experiences between birth and sort of I five years affects us later on in life and his little part of a bigger project that she's he's been working on for I WANNA say a couple of years. Now yeah she workaround earliest development and supporting children and their parents wants. She's she's worked on this in recent years and she's spoken about how this is her real commitment that she has you know with Geraldo Walk. She's she's very committed to this. And she speaking about wanting to make a difference on a generational timescale And so we've seen a lot of work from at this year and I think next year is going to be really big for her in this area So yes. She went to the maternity unit just to a couple of days at to learn more episode of private visit background work which they do quite a lot of they do. I think a lot of people don't realize that before we see a A member of the Royal Family announced as a patron of an organizational before they launch project usually have been months of meetings behind closed doors. Private visits you know. Whenever when Megan launched her for patronage is at the start this year we found out with each one when and they're announced she had been several times without anyone knowing and this is the same with With cates visit to the hospital this week but I think this for her. It's been real longtime coming this project from the conversations I've had with aides Kensington Palace. It is really going to be the big focus from early next year rights up until the summer. We'll see a lot of work announced around that I'm really looking forward to it because we've heard so much about it and now it's time to see the goods and prince. William was very busy this week to visit all part of his heads up initiative which is really focusing on the subject of mental health amongst men particularly men in their thirties and above in the football or soccer community and so he visited West Bromwich Albion which is football club soccer club here in the UK where he spoke with a lot of the players abouts tossed toxic masculinity and the pressures of social media the even older men face as well particularly older men in the public. I had a conversation in with one of the players there about the criticism they received on social media asking it to the both of them and You know they spoke about sort of that pressure pressure that they feel to sort of react very match away when actually sometimes this stuff hurts and it's okay to talk about. Yeah I think well we were talking about cates commitment around earliest development. William has really put a lot of time this year into a mental health and particularly men's mental health and this heads heads up campaign is a partnership that's been created between the Football Association and his Mental Health Project heads together and it's trying to use football as a way of getting men to talk about their mental health and open up and he spent a lot of time this year. Visiting different projects and different clubs meeting different people and getting them to try and talk about at mental health. It's great to see that. Continue because I think sometimes is very easy to launch campaign. And that's that move onto the next thing but I think that this has been really consistent and I think we'll see him continued like this throughout the football apple season is clearly happening an impact. Because when you look at the comments and social media when Football club post videos radio when the FA Williams was president of the Football Association. Bull Fan Fan so I think it is a natural fit and what he's doing really seems to be resonating with the fans the players and people around the UK. I think even outside of the sort of like older male community These are words that kind of resonate with everyone and I think it shows the kind of impact that working royals can have when they decide to really highlight an issue And fakes bring it to people's attention especially one that I think that they personally connect with UAE So important for them. I think it's why when we look at the kind of gamut a philanthropic interests that all of the younger role member family members. Have they will have much. It's less patronage. is they work on less projects than we see. You know. We'll talk about Prince Andrew later in the show but he had one hundred thirty the number one. How can you have any kind of impact when you know? There's barely enough days in the years to focus on more time. We've seen with the younger ones. They've they've got less. They've also really tried to focus on different areas that they can rather than no concentrating on the same thing that they can have an impact across a range of issues definitely but outside of the work that Williams too. He is a future monarch and so we see him Also picking up investitures long the way not but something that the queen release to do most of the time and now it's very much Charles and William the carrying out the majority of those I want to give a big congratulations to Communication Secretary Buckingham Palace. Marnie Gaffney if you have followed the voyles for any amount of time. You'll know Mani as one of the key. Members of the Communications is team at Buckingham Palace and she was presented a Royal Victorian order which is basically a knighthood that honors. Your work for your service for the Royal Family. She's been a longtime member of the communications team now. Working for the Sussex is she was a big part in their tour of taught southern Africa. Yes she is a queen of tolls. Definitely congratulations on your listening. And then William of course is off to you. Create an Amman yet. He's on Sunday. He arrives in in Kuwait on Sunday. And then he's there until Wednesday the fourth of December visiting visiting and Beth Kuwait an-and. It's his first official. visit both countries the trips at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office I think we're seeing William do a lot more of these kind of visits where it's just him. He's Aaron a very statesmanlike capacity. And you know the focus of his his trip is highlighting. The security concerns that the country but also the sort of UK relationships that have particularly when it comes not business. The I think it's interesting that he's he's going back to the Middle East after his very successful tool The last year his his towards definitely I think a positioning him more in a statesmanlike positions. They think definitely. I think what's always difficult with trips like this is is. How do you tell the story of the trip in an impactful way because I remember once at a different news organization is Asian? That I worked on. I remember trying to pay the trip of William going away somewhere by himself. A my edison turned around and he said well it's just just a man in a suit in another country you know. How can we tell that story? And I think that we've really seen a concerted effort from Kensington Palace to make sure sure that visually these trips are exciting. That the stuff that he's doing is more than just visiting other state leaders and the other old men shall we say say sort of getting of cities and buildings so you know I work in television television and you need. You're right. You need to vote to tell a story and pictures as well as words and so forth it needs to be visually interesting. So for example on this trip he's going to visit. Is it the Kuwaiti desert. And he'll be which will be it in a traditional QA T- Qwerty tent so that sounds like it's going to look visually interesting exactly. And there's a real focus on sort of highlighting. The beautiful landscapes keeps the diverse communities of each country in the ammonia mountains Yeah you're right. They say that that he's going to visit beautiful landscapes divaesque communities and of course not only is he doing following an itinerary that set for him. I think we see some things in that that also reflection election of what he's interested in say he'll be talking with With Lee does about Kuwait in the mountains plans to conserve environments and natural habitats. Let's say again that kind of ties with Hayes in personal conservation interests and of course back in the UK..
