"You're wicked look into the world of real cruising ivanhoe's matt hochberg and this episode over four hundred and twenty two. I just went on beans odyssey of the seas the brand new crucial newest in the fleet and my first time on a quantum ultra-cautious. What was it like. what did i love. And what do i think of odyssey of the seas. We got a full review on this week's episode. Here we go anytime. I got to go on a new royal caribbean cruise ship. It's always extra exciting. And after i don't know seventeen months. Whatever it account is of no cruises going on a new cruise ship in canada. Getting back into the swing of things of that type of excitement is extra. Welcome because of course. It's been so long as nice people to be doing this again. And i just held on rabin's odyssey of the seas for a six night western caribbean cruise as my first time on odyssey of the seas and also joining me on this podcast and also was on board of me. is billy hirsch. From crews habit dot com. No doubt billy is recording this podcast. Where we're back at home now and I'm sure all the windows are shut. There is Evanescence playing in the background. And i believe the world's tiniest violin may or may not be on his shoulder. Billy welcome back to the roadblock podcast. You have absolutely nailed my My post cruise depression playlist and in routine. But i'm glad to be here talking with you at least app. Listen a little amy lee. Never heard anybody. It just makes the makes getting back into the world just a little bit easier and We're talking of course about odyssey of the seas and both bill. And i were able to go on this cruise. So this is billy's first class ship and my first time on odyssey although had been on quantum and anthem of the sea so we were coming under different perspectives and billy. Talk about his perspective here for me. I'd gone on quantum and anthem. And i was like the quantum class ships. I always still prefer the away scholarships over them but what was nice about the quantum is that they were different enough from the voyager freedom class lineage that it just gave it a little different kind of feel I felt like it lacked a little something and i think odyssey really filled. Don't talk about that later. But talk to me about your decision to pick odyssey the seas. I've wanted to get on board a quantum class ship for a while now and i think You and i were actually supposed to be on anthem. I believe it was in july. Yes was a roker and blogger cruise to norway nor My favorite cruise destination. By the way so i was really excited because i've been wanting to see a quantum class ship and that was obviously disappointing so when the opportunity came up to Get on not only a quantum class up. At a quantum ultra class ship which..

"But someone goes on their first. Royal caribbean cruisers. A lot of things that go on in terms of planning and expectations and whatnot. But i think it's always a little bit different when you've got someone who's trying their first royal caribbean cruise but has actually done a lot of work. Learning about royal caribbean before they actually ever go on their first crew certainly advocate researching and learning about your cruise before you get on board but in this particular scenario we actually have somebody who was quote unquote working in the space learning about cruises and then kinda then took her first cruise. It's kind of an interesting dichotomy and we're gonna talk about that today with our very good friend. Jennifer rely podcast. Thank you bet absolutely and Jennifer if you are unaware actually does our youtube video editing. She's our chief editor. We're gonna really cool title for your general life. Viceroy of youtube editing. Or something like that. Yes that would be good. And when geno when we've been i've been working with jennifer about a year now and when you first started working in the you would never been on a royal caribbean cruise. But you finally went on a cruise for the first time on. Roker ms mariner. The sees a four nights sailing. That i was on as well. So let's start before all this channel. Let's go back about a year ago and you've never been on a cruise before. Why had you never taken a cruise before. Was there any particular reason or just never got around to it. No there was no reason really. I grew up in ohio. And i had a pretty big family so we would usually just drive to the beach for our summer vacation or or go to various parts of the midwest Side never really thought about it. Too much I do have an aunt and uncle that live in port canaveral so they always talked about going on cruises and it always seemed really find that this never. We never debate as our family vacation. So i guess going and being becoming an adult it was something i had thought about much yoga. So just haven't got around to it kind of thing. And lo and behold to get an opportunity to cruise now again. What's make this interesting is gentlemen. Would edit the youtube videos and what that means basically is i would record the audio for the video and i will talk about whatever jenna would listen to it and piecing together and i think that created in in my opinion. It seemed like it would create a certain expectation or certain observation if you will about what cruises are for you having just simply edited them in certain bits of information. Kind of stuck with you. So you know going back to when you were leading up to this i cruise. What were your thoughts going into it. How prepared did you feel. By virtue of the fact that you had essentially learned about real derby through osmosis. You kind of just like absorbed a lot of information inadvertently. Yeah i actually felt pretty prepared for it. Just because i had the videos for close to a year and we do two videos a week will now three with the q. And i live spec to videos usually about eight to ten minutes long of about tips and different tricks with royal caribbean side. I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. However a lot of my visual knowledge came from the video clips that we use that are provided by royal caribbean. So the very marketing focused. You know It's kind of what they want to show. So i was curious to see what the experience was actually like visually. Not looking at the video footage from royal caribbean and seeing things with my own is absolutely and this was a four nine crews mariner the seas out of port canaveral. We went to perfect kooky nassau and we had a cd. Let's start off with the embarcation process. Kind of difference on these brand new for a lot of folks including yourself of course with the pre crews testing the check in times What was your experience like with with check. And how did you. What what did you think about that whole process essentially from leading all the way up until you actually stepped on board the ship. Write the check in process was fairly easy. I had a couple of technical problems with the royal. Curbing apt which i was trying to figure out but is scheduled the cover tests ahead of time which was easy then but now i think it's more in demand so you might want to try to schedule your cupboard tests even more in the future than you think you have to And then i got to the cruise terminal. And i had a cps card for my sister or the set sail. What's the boarding pass called so so pass. This set sail past. The i had it for my sister. But it wouldn't show up for me. So i had to kind of ask them why not had a couple of technical problems but other than that. It was really easy. You know you did the little wellness check at the terminal. And then you pretty much immediately boarded the ship that gave you a wristband if you're vaccinated and then at trae slit for contact pricing and neglected to mention that your sister was with you on board as well so that did help you kinda have somebody else there and against someone else's brand new to cruising and and she knew nothing before i knew i knew more because i've done the videos but she didn't know anything. Okay that's good. I mean it's kind of funny how you're kind of like a little a little edge on her in terms of her of knowledge about what to expect even though both of you there on the exact same amount of cruises so you get to. Let's talk about your statement. You had a balcony room. What you think about it was it. Was it what you thought. In terms of size amenities. What were your thoughts on all that. Yeah i loved the balcony room. I thought it was great size wise. I think it's pretty standard. I'm not too picky about anything really in particular so it was good for me. There was a couch their desk area in the bed and i really liked to go out on the balcony. I wasn't on it too much just because we are doing so many things throughout the crews that we did get room service when morning headed on a balcony and that was really nice so overall i like to the rim or your thoughts on the stadium attendant. How that how that all went. Because i'm just curious again there. There isn't really anything like that on land where you've got somebody who comes to your room twice a day and you know sets your fixes your room essentially twice and it's a lot more personal when you stay in hotel even when they come once a day is pretty rare you ever see the person and or have any kind of conversations with them but talk me about what your how that all went and kind of how that did it meet your expectations and kind of what you thought about that whole process. Yeah i was actually surprised. I didn't know that they Because we got a knock on the door. A little bit after arriving in our superintendent. She introduced herself. She was actually from brazil. And i speak some portuguese so we were talking a little bit And yeah i mean. The room was really clean. I didn't see her too much. Because we were pretty much in. And out of that room rushing around the ship the whole time about. I thought it was a nice nice touch and i had a lot of camera equipment everywhere so she was able to. You know fix up the rim and make it nice. Even though there was a lot of equipment around absolutely that makes sense so mariner of the seas obviously a great. I've been on there so many times. I've lost count already at this point. What did you think about the ship. I know we talked about this. When we were on board i was i was kinda curious. You know it's when you see these. Things are only in photos or video in this case you know. I don't think the scale is ever is easy to grasp. So what do you think of the ship in terms of its size. Was it what you expected. What was What stood out to you about mariner the season the most right So i had seen a lot of marano. Disease aerial footage from the drone. that row. Curbing has so you can't really get the true scale size just from looking at that so i was pretty impressed by the size. I have no expectations from previous scholarships or anything. But i really couldn't believe that all of that could sit on a ship and it could still float So i really liked it. I thought there are a lot of activities for kids and adults And all the different venues on board like the ice skating show and even like the helicopter patent of front there were just so many areas to explore. I thought that four days maybe wasn't enough. Maybe one more see day. We would fully kind of seen an experienced all of the ship. But i was impressed by the size of it if you if you could magically transport yourself to one place on the ship right now and spent an hour there where would you wanna go..

"I obviously there's a very very very very very strong preference for the vaccine and that's primarily because the vaccine is more known in terms of its efficacy going forward as opposed to you know how long antibodies are there and you can make the argument the other way around. I'm not going to get that argument. But i'm just pointing that they there's been far more of a focus on that aspect and there has been on the other one and the end of the day. I think they're trying to the. That's the route they'd be going that change hundred percent. Of course they could change. Will the change that i don't. I have no idea on that. But as your russian how would you experience be vaccinated verizon backs somebody would be technically unvaccinated. You would not be allowed to go into the the main issue. I say there's two things number one before the you have to undergo some testing which will have an additional cost to it that occurs before and during the cruise and then number two you would be relegated out of certain areas so there are certain vaccinated only zones you have access to depending on when you sail maureen. This could change. I don't want to you. Should everyone should know the policies. I'm talking about right now. Pertain to know really cruises here in august. Two thousand twenty one. If you cruise in january gabrielle does or october or twenty twenty three. It's likely all going to be different. But as of right. Now if you're going a cruise ship out of florida as you would not be able to out of other places maureen. You would be not able to go to certain places like the pub. Schooner bar casino izumi hibachi there's other places but those are the ones that jump out to me. I've taught my head but you'd be able to go anywhere in the pool deck anywhere basically outside. You're pretty much good to go for particular key. The pool deck the flow rider water slides. No problems at all. It would just be a lot of those indoor places that are typically only frequented by adults that you would have to. You have to wear masks. But of course even vaccinate. People are wearing masks on board You know the natural immunity thing is an interesting. I don't have a plan. I really don't i you know. There's there's a lot of factors at play here. I don't pretend to know them. All and i certainly am not Naive enough maureen to give you any kind of addiction. Because i have no clue but i think it's i think it's a very valid point and i'm glad you brought it up and i appreciate you sending the email and and that will do it for this episode of the c'mon blog podcast. "A news article saying that is not considering canadians. Mixed doses of the vaccine fully vaccinated as a canadian who did due diligence by getting any. I seen that was made available to me for both doses and was encouraged. By our prime minister up concerned. I got visor person. Dinner fully vaccinated and had my government. Issued proof of both doses. Is it true that rokhmin will not consider to vaccinated. I've cruise book for january. Two thousand twenty two people. I'm going with Are vaccinated with the mic with the unmixed doses. So it's just me in jeopardy here. This kind of devastating cross my fingers thanks for sharing laze in greece. On your podcast gabrielle. Thinks to the email. And i. I gotta say i feel so bad for all of you canadians. That are out there that are listening and reading. Railway block dot com. You did exactly as gabrielle said. You did exactly what your government said to do you got. I mean it's all you guys went off on your own and do this way. You did exactly what you're supposed to do. And i say that this is the cdc rule. Not that makes it any better than like okay. Well that that's the basically the us centers for disease control and the cdc has issued this edict reading it. Personally my unscientific opinion. Because i'm not a health official by any means is house like basically the cdc saying. We're not exactly sure how that works. There's not enough data out there when you mix vaccines to know truly. It's a factor how effective it is and therefore we're not going to recommend and therefore if you're a cruise ship passenger which the cdc has jurisdiction over They feel like you know what played safe. We're not gonna. We're not going to recommend her..

"Toyota built the plants here in the us. And they do that to you know lotteries. I'm not gonna get into all of these things. This is just how business works. It's aim pretty ladies and gentlemen. It's just big. Business is big business. And i'm not here to make excuses for them. I'm here to tell you that. There is a rationale for it beyond simply dollars and sense is just the nature of the beast mentioned longer conversation. You can have about this because it is kind of an interesting discussion point but really and truly it has to do with how. Us laws are made a lot of the us. Maritime laws were created in the nineteenth century. And they really haven't changed And the great example of that is the passenger vessels. Services act of the west known sometimes incorrectly as the jones act and There's a lot of Cabotage laws every country has cabotaged laws and the us specifically in how they handle crew members. It's basically makes it impossible. And if you wanna say that's all that you're you're totally wrong on this. They could run a cruise ship out of the us. Look norwegian has one they do indeed. The pride of america is indeed a. We'll call it a modern crucial. That operate that is that is flagged in the united states. It is staffed primarily americans and operates out of hawaii. This is how norwegian is able to offer cruises around hawaii opposed to just why being a stop along the way and people apply it there. You go there's the example until you actually talk to someone who's actually gone on that particular ship and listen. Every ship is different. And i've talked linked about how reviews are notoriously. But it's trust me when i say that. If you were to go try you would probably come back saying what many other people who reported and i have not done personally. So full disclosure. I have not tried it myself. But it is a sub par experience in a lot of people's views because the ship is super small super old. And it's just doesn't offer what cruise ships can offer and there's no way we can really do much with it beyond what it currently does. It's essentially a glorified overnight ferry. That may be a little harsh. But what i mean is its purpose is to offer cruises around the hawaiian island so a floating hotel if you will as opposed to what cruise ships are even norwegian's fleet else. Other outside of the pride of america and that is you know their destinations things to do on their and they're they're much significantly larger. It's a again. This is a much larger conversation. But that's part of the reason why i went on. I should have just said row communist from based in liberia. And they're headquartered in miami left it at that but it's obvious question. It's it's a good one there so there you go. There are some weird. Google searches that are out there and this is. This is kind of interesting. Let me different. Maybe you knew about some of these all these none of these. I don't know maybe. I'll have to do this in the future is as time permits to He's there's plenty of people google just like it makes. You may scratch your head about all these things to you. Know what where it's all based out of and all that kind of stuff so so there you some fund we hear about royal carribean is already answer your listener emails. "I wonder what that one actually brings up. Google royal caribbean is an example of. I don't know. I don't know why you'd want to search for that. I think if people wanna figure out like the people also ask what's gonna be known for what type of cruises royal caribbean was an example cruise. I think people. I don't know why he wants that. Exact term is an example of but. Yeah it's i mean. Obviously it's a broker is an example of a mass market cruise line. contemporary cruise. line is is a You know basically it's not a luxury cruise line gets not a boutique cruise line. It is not a premium cruise line Premium cruise lines would be like celebrity and princess cruise lines holland america to some extent You know boutique would be like silver. See or something like that as a luxury frankly and then royal caribbean is more like their contemporary cruise. Lines mass-market carnival norwegian disney cruise. Line that grouping if you will and the last thing i see here when people type in relic rabin is from wear. This is actually a more common question because where roku is based out of so you know. Roka's headquarters broke national roar. Real curbing groups headquarters. I should say is in miami florida but the company is based in liberia. So this is a very common practice in the cruise industry that cruise lines are not. They're not us companies in the sense of where uncle sam reports to you. Look up royal being group. "The main dining remain. Essentially as long as the main dining room was opened serving people. You can order off that menu which is nice. They have another one here. Arocca mean is food. free talked about that. there's free food and there's food the cost extra and it's you know. How much do you know. Could you really go on a cruise and not spend a dime on food. Yes i could totally see short cruises where you know three crews. You're a coq one of the days. Sure why not. I love the dining room. And i love the wind. Jamir and you remember breakfast. Do whatever you're doing on shore you even have lunch on board the ship dinner in the dining room and you know snacks. It's totally conceivable. I think the drinks the harder want to do that. Like i think food is totally conceivable to do that. I'm not sure that drinks would be again. It depends how much of a drinker you are. And it'll be huge. It'll be wearing a hawaiian shirt and be someone that would fit into animal house movie by by any means i what i really mean is just for a lot of people being on vacation as having those pretty drinks those drinks with an umbrella in the or the ones that have all the colors. We will go. Whoa what is that right. It looks great. That guy drinks the harder one to to make while for food washer on longer sailings cruise or longer. I personally feel it's harder to shy away from the extra cost food just because it's variety right. Sometimes you just feel like sushi's feel like you want go have a great filet mignon and that's an option as well so It is free but there are added options. Roker being a passport needed. Oh boy this is a very very common questions. Do you need to pass. Is it needed a need. Is the key word right here if you're a. Us citizen sailing on closed loop sailing meaning accrues that departure in the united states goes wherever goes and comes back the same port in the us. You do not need a passport. You can cruise with a birth certificate state issued. Id needs to be the original birth certificate. You can do that. I think that's actually absolutely one hundred percent a mistake to do that. The reason being is that seems everything is fine even if everything is fine it's still makes it longer process both check in for your crews and then when you're disembarking the cruise you go through different line. People who don't have a passport. Do yourself aver get a passport. It's not needed for in that scenario. If you're going overseas if you're cruising on open jostling workers begins ends another transatlantic If you're cruising in europe do you need a passport that one. I think a little more obvious but a lot of americans tend to. Oh we don't need a passport. I i can say it myself a hundred bucks and the time to go get one process. Trust me when..

Yes it was actually real caribbean it was brokering cruise line and then when roker bought celebrity acquired kirk celebrity lines then they formed road caribbean cruises ltd. Which was the parent company for rookie international. Which was the original cruise line and then celebrity right so that makes sense roker is food included it is included mostly included. Yes to the point that you can go on a cruise. never spend a dime and have all your meals. Snacks paid for right You may be this but there is an opportunity to be able to have additional food options. That are not included. Not every single piece of food is included in your cruise fare. Right the You're the main dining near the wind. Jamir that's that's included. You go to sorrento speech. That's that's included. You wanna have water milk Coffee black coffee tea. That's included as well. The what's not included foodwise. Would it be specialty restaurant dining right so chops grill. Suppor one fifty central park wonderland. These are not. These are additional cost items sushi at zooming right. In addition obviously alcohol is not included juices or not included. Bottled waters not included. But you can absolutely go on a cruise and i'll pay extra for food So when people ask is food included it is but not every single piece of food but enough that you don't have to you can elect to get some. I think the alcohol is probably the biggest thing as soft drinks as well again food versus drinks. If you want to make that delineation but Yeah Israel roker. Bean is room service. "Pickle member preko video got drinks but there were a limited menu. There were only in the evening. Royal caribbean because i think well they say primarily because the social distancing they don't want everybody in the demand anymore so they've offering basically everybody a pseudo during package a poor man's drink package if you will where you basically get four or five or six drinks per day that are vouchers for any drink up to thirteen dollars per gender fourteen on ships from the uk. And it's like a drink pack if your diamond you get four beverage vouchers. That are out all day at any bar except for starbucks uncles alcoholic and non alcoholic options. Basically if you have the drink package it's the same rules. You just go up. Somebody let them know you can use it. I love this this change because number one. I always drink the diamond drink menu before was so limited it specify the type of liquor the brand of liquor you could use and whatnot and it just. I never loved it. I drank because it was complimentary but it was like in the nfl going back to the drink package variety and offered not to mention the fact. That diamond drinks were only available at night and that was very limiting in the daytime. Anyway so now fast forward these drink. The drink vouchers are available throughout the day. It's a very compelling choice. When i go i have a cruise booked on mariner of the seas later this month sephora nicer i think i'm gonna forego the drink package and go with my diamond drinks which will be five diamond plus. I'll get five drinks today. Your order five drinks a day and still order. Let's say three or four drinks on top of that. I'm still coming out ahead of the drink package price so you know. There's some food for thought. I'm not sure if i'm necessarily sold on it. I really liked the drink package primarily. Because i don't have to even think about it the i initially when i first came out i thought that was really lame. Excuse but truthfully. I really don't i really enjoy not thinking about it like it's just so much easier. Peace of mind not having to do that. So that's really interesting. Something else that i love doing changing the for for kids. They're getting a wifi discount. And both both the the beverage voucher Change and the wifi discount for kids are both permanent changes. A one of the things you mentioned about the that i go back. I forgot the probably other big elven room there. And that is you're not getting it. Unlimited drinks the diamond lounge anymore. You know basically before this if you go that i'm allowed from four to eight or whatever. It was happy hour times. You go there and you can have unlimited drinks. It didn't count against your diamond rings now. It does and obviously the brokering does not want this lounge to be full of people. They need social justice involved. And here's raul. Tell you all the any proponent of the diamond like love that. I'm allowed to tell you that it's all about the social aspect being able to be in there and talking to other guests so the fact that there are a limited drinks. According to those people the argument was never about that was about the social aspect having a dedicated lounge. So that's still there. And i think the the flexibility you get with the new drink vouchers. Far exceed the The drawback if you will that you can't get unlimited drinks and the diamond lounge anymore in the evening..

"All covered but not every site is like that and some people may obviously everyone's insurance situations different and you know bottom line is there may or may not be a cost to it and number three. There's someone brought up. And i think it's an excellent point is the fact that they're doing these tests requiring up to three days before the cruise but of course you know your test result is only negative at the point where you got the tests and as you leave that facility and you go somewhere else you know you could have exposed yourself right. So it's like should they be doing it at the cruise terminal. That's an excellent point. I i'm not here to. I would love for them to do that. Number one and make it would solve the first issue about logistics and costs and heck. I'm paying for it. As a matter of you know having him with terminal i think make more sense but i think logistically for royal caribbean. That's not in the cars now. I'm guessing that i could be wrong. And for all. I know they may end up doing about terminal later on it. I think some lines in europe doing it at the terminal. But it's a little bit different in europe with their socialized medicine. It is in the. Us always keep that in my but we're going too far into the weeds on this one. The bottom line is you need to get a test before your crews and this is true for vaccinated or unvaccinated folks. And it's going to be a rule. I think we're going to have at least for the short term. I the this particular rule came out as a result of the delta variant. You know it's interesting. When i was at perfect july fourth i was sitting at the cocoa beach club. I was there with a number of other members. The media and world champions ceo. Michael bailey came by and he said hello and you know as we're having a good time. And he mentioned at that time from his mouth..

And so there we gotta get guests from ships to the location and so that's a opportunistic. Built a business that were that we don't want operate we don't want wanna bill. "Throughout your occasion And so tech can be in the foreground when it needs to be shirt but to your point. It doesn't need to be training neon blinking at you right. It needs to be. I think the work we did In the amplification of voices. And it's here on free as well the interactive storybook wall. The games for kids are really fun. Ways to deliver tack I think technically low tack to write A button at A way to communicate with somebody on perfect day is is a way to do it and that again. Those are often we learn from those justin build more in go further so so i do think though tech. Ken get disruptive. I've talked about this before. I believe when you go to a restaurant and this is a me thing but i believe a restaurant is that experience especially a high end restaurant and so i think. Qr codes for menus of the worst thing thurman advantage. It's great for of you know convenience if you need. It's great to look ahead and plan get excited but when you go to a real high end restaurant you want you want to feel the paper you want the experience and so i think tech kenya the way some cases and that's an example where it does at or process right absolutely rolling out really work this way with go back john. Yep yeah it's exact around so during the shutdown things going you talk about how of pandemic raewyn you were thinking about. Things official recognition about the chat was going to go forward and things like that right and among them were a couple of projects and the southern. Also that you've now taken on in your role of some of the products some of the private destinations because roker announce a number of new things. That are coming our way on a number of places around the world. You'd among them in the bahamas so wanted to get kind of your update here if you will on some of these projects because you know rokhmin announced projects tell a private beach clubs and areas in freeport nassau antiga aleppo among others right. There was talking about being developed a phase two and three of co-cocaine. So i don't know where you want to start. But the one i i'll start with the bahamas because we're actually in nasa recording this and there's been obviously i've been paying attention a lot of the local news reports in the court filings. Or what have you where things stand with with the projects here so step back a little bit. If you think of kind of the fundamental dna right of going cruise vacation or royal caribbean national specifically. It's really a couple of things. Keep wanna go to great destinations on great ships with great service and that fundamentally equals a great vacation and so for destinations for us in some cases. It's just getting them there right. So odyssey will run a an eight six itinerarium. You'll start to see us on. Push deeper into the southern caribbean because places like abc islands. Have i appeal. The second thing is there are destinations that people want to go to but they don't spend enough time or there's just not enough for them to do. The royal beach club is one of those things allows us to enhance specific destinations. That have great beach. Maybe just not quite enough to keep everybody on having a great short and then third parts of the world where we need to create a destination onto itself and that's really where the perfect day portfolio comes in too so if you think of the difference between the two of them perfect day versus a beach on a beach club is a destination we're going to. You may not go to the beach club. You may go somewhere else. You may decide to go over to atlanta's or do something different whereas perfect day. A perfect day. We'll actually just be the physical destination me. We ended up going to up and so we're going to continue to build all of those We're gonna continue to go to places we don't we're gonna continue to go and build out. Royal beach clubs. The first one will be here in nasa. It'll be the royal beach club paradise island and then we're going to continue to expand our perfect day portfolio. Will it be the exact places that he rattled off. You know there's a couple of things i would say have changed in the last fifteen months Number one the destinations have are evolving Meaning they're coming out of a pandemic themselves so there's situations are different Second art guests sir evolving and we're constantly updating our slate of where we wanna go And so that those factors in formulas together help us think about where we wanna go for sure. There will be a royal beach here. We have gotten to the point where we have We've announced that we executed are lease with the government so the total space is twenty acres Thirteen of which we own privately and that it's seven acres of crown. Land government land that. We've leased so the land lease annecy baddeley's because we have to be able to Build appears to get people there and so we are going to continue to move forward. That program We actually went over and toured today to her the land today so those and freeport has that one is it was interesting is from the outside looking in yeah was freeport and galveston were the super projects. That seems to have the first like earmarks. Like these are goes during the mandak And i'm just curious how reports saks up there. Yeah i think they're all different each Galveston freeport And Robichon up here. In paradise island all had very different unique challenge to solve And so i think part of the reason they appear that way. Is that again different. Either regulatory i mean here we have environmental processes that we have to go through because the type of work we do versus in galveston. It really was the bill out of the the new zealand. And so they all are gonna operate it kind of their different pace we had to finish the land acquisition here where we didn't have to do that right out. In galveston freeport continues to before were were still working through the the legal agreements. So that's just been a long aided process that we hope will include sometimes suit interesting so these projects are still for black ago in in that. Yeah so far. I mean the galveston's for sure chicago. There's you know we are so if you think of any step back and look at the bahamas over all right we have been. I would argue in. Probably you know this is my viewpoint. I think we've been one of the best corporations to really help bahamians overall Whether that is where we've done through the bombs feeding network whether it's supportive local businesses hurricane early hurricane relief absolutely we do entrepreneurial workshops. Were the hot sauce. Project came out of as.

"This week's podcast episode was recorded. Live on board roker beans freedom of the seas and being on board a cruise ship. There's always some noise including some loud air conditioning in this episode. But it's really good. Look at what roker has been up technologically and operationally enjoy when he talked about real cruises. You think about a relaxing vacation. Amazing places to visit. And there's a lot that goes in behind to make that all work and it is quite frankly. There's a lot more than just the places you're visiting the pool decks your aunt and the buffet. You might be eating at going on. Royal caribbean and i think what differentiates roller so many other competitors is the innovation. That's the robot calls outback on that for decades. And i think it's a very easy way of describing really all the in one word all the innovation and envelope pushing that the cruise line does and behind. That are a lot a lot of smart people. Setting with one of them today and as j schneider. Who's the chief product innovation officer for rogue rabin group. Welcome jay thanks for having me absolutely and you work exa. That's your lincoln. That's what it's a blend of product development experience splendid blended into one so for those who aren't aware of your background tells how you got your overview of an interesting background before you came to rocard in. Yeah i been with royal caribbean for the last four and a half years in this new role as chief product division officer for about seven months which was expansion of by my previous role my previous rose. Sdp digital Leading the digital transformation for the entire group And before that. I spent about ten years. Walt disney company in everything from Oath vp of Experience development focused on The walt disney world disneyland International apps websites. Any sort of any sort of guests facing technology that you use And did that. Including running their economy shop a handful of other rules trauma crew there. And then i Seven years in healthcare before that doing similar type of work and then obviously coming to royal caribbean in order. The things that i've had the opportunity to talk about a lot of things about what you guys are doing here. And one of those interesting of course. The dynamic of designing developing and planning for cruise ship products is different than planning for of land. Because on land. You have so many more different granted a lot of the options that are there the infrastructure that that exists right. Yeah listen i. We asked people that worked for us to think about three things one be unreasonably aspirational to challenge everything. And then three put the guest or the crew at the center of everything we designed it. And i think that that. Da is inherent in the developing designing experiences for anything. It's just really hard for you. Is it really so If you think about it we we make fun of come. Lambis companies all the time right when they think about challenges. They don't ever have to worry that. The satellite mega disrupted by a heavy thunderstorm. There have to think about building technology where you might lose activity to cloud every company in the plan if he look at their corporate strategy. Corporate technology strategy is focused on getting to the cloud as fast as humanly possible in our chan and our problem. We operate you know. Fifty to sixty vessels that all have their own data centers at sea so we operate this very hybrid world. Where yes when you interact with us. He transact with us on shore whether you're a travel advisor or a guest direct you're interacting the cloud. Shirk your guest here on board. You need all of your technology. Work beautifully whether the internet is perfectly connected or not. You know people off ask. Can you still get to the cloud and maybe the guest disrupted a little bit on salvage ships. Were we've added Key or automated stateroom. It's not like one. There's a heavier rain. You know rainstorm. That is okay. The room doesn't open so it. Those sort of things requires to really re think how we engineer our technology. It also requires us to rethink that infrastructure. That we haven't seen so. We spent a lot of time invested heavily to make sure that people have ubiquitous access to beat the onboard network is way to say it throughout the entire stateroom back even five years. You've got a really great signal in the atrium spaces in the elevator lobby in the hallway. And so if you want to read cnn or something you kinda had to lean your phone out in the hallway to get a good signal right. Go back into your room and sit down and do you no longer have to do them. So we've invested heavily to make sure that you have quick and easy access to the internet in every corner of the ship and investing in the ships. Something that you know before cruise last. Shut down in twenty twenty. That was an ongoing process is iterative process. It was something that your team is working on. A variety of matters phlegm twenty twenty comes around and obviously the cruise ships shut down for fifteen months. So let's talk about what do you. How did your team take advantage. I guess of that time what was done. Essentially behind the scenes. Yeah it it's great question that we We we spent so much time and energy getting up to call it march of twenty twenty pre pandemic that we build an amazing foundation. Had we not made that investment. Getting back into service. Now it'd be very difficult very expensive And so we have the benefit that all the work that we had done to remove friction from the boarding process which happens to be a covert friendly thing the monster transformation which is a code felt anything eating live. View your folios. You're not to go wait in line at guest services being able to build on those over time Really enabled us to get back into service with not having to magazine. -nificant amman investment in. You were already kind of expecting to do a consumer. Yes back of house. Grigor medical system. We've got. We spent a timing ensure that the team on board has they need There are tools that we never have imagined. Before we've gone up and down as the whole as the planet has on. Do i need to take your tabernacle right. So as we as humanity learned we adjusted and so we've explored some of those So those have been necessary but we're building on a huge foundation. The other thing is our infrastructure. Investment was largely completed. Now it's never completed right attributive. I talked about that before right But you do big cycles and we had upfront prioritize making sure that we were uplifting wi fi access points were cabling throughout the ship and so the amplification program the royal bran yup placenta celebrity brand. We really were complaining. Always hearing something that you guys started before the pandemic boy talking about great timing was muster. Right this is a project that came out. Everyone assume that it came out because of the pandemic but it actually was something that you were not before everything. Shut down as talk talk a little bit about that experience because you know it's something that now is an amazing game changer. Because if nothing else it makes the guest experience so much better you talk about. Friction was and that's something that boy i mean. There's nothing was fuller of friction than than than the muster drill. I when i got here. We spent a lot of time talking to guests talking to the leadership team about what was really disappointing in the vacation. We deliver amazing vacations but are still bumps along the terminal experience and what they considered the day. one experience was just the worst as he studied it. We heard from guests didn't feel like they were on vacation until two. I kind of unpack that a bit. We ninety.

Adventure of the Seas 2021 cruise review

"We're talking all about adventure of the seas and the first cruises back in north america. Here we go so. I am recording. This episode on a roll on roll is adventure of the see something that i'm not sure i thought was really going to happen as soon as it happened even a couple months ago adventure. This is the first world caribbean cruise ship to restart operations from north america. She began her cruises on june twelfth. And we Had the opportunity to book two cruises in a row the first two sailings hence why we didn't have an episode last week. I'm sorry about that. But i figured it was better to have a full recap then split it up. I mean i could have done that. Obviously in that would have gotten too. But i feel like i've got a really good sense of it and this'll be a really interesting episode. Because next week's episode spoiler alert. I'll be on a freedom of the seas to check out that love more on that later so compare contrast all that. You'll get that next week. But i wanted to give you a look at what it's like being on arocca cruise ship that is sailing once again number one. It is amazing. It feels so good to be back on their. This is something that i knew was going to happen. But i don't whether it was coming on board the ship on the first day or others coming on board. Either these sailings everyone on board the all the guests on board seem to have this really sense of. I can't believe it's actually happening because as you all know it's been so long since we've been able to go on a cruise together or at all and you know the after a while. I think a lot of took this pessimistic view of when will cruises actually begin. We certainly had a couple times along the way where thought might not happen. But anyway it's here. It's real and Honestly i'm going to go through some of the big differences on adventure this compared to what it was like in two thousand nineteen. But i'm gonna tell you off that it's a lot more like it was before than different. I think a lot of people assumed or maybe thought that going back on cruise and twenty one is going to be like this lockdown experience and i can tell you at least on an adventure of the seas. It's nothing like that.

CDC: People Should Get Fully Vaccinated Before Going on Cruises

"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its covid 19 crews and guidance for travelers warning the risk of getting the coronavirus is still high for unvaccinated passenger's. NPR's Ping Wang reports. The CDC says that anyone who wants to go on a cruise should get fully vaccinated against Covid. That's because when you have a lot of people from different places, mingling in close quarters, sharing, buffet style meals and indoor air space, the risk of an infected person spreading the virus to someone else's high. The CDC recommends that cruise ships only allow vaccinated people into indoor bars and restaurants where people are not masking and social distancing. After a year long no sale order. Cruise ships are coming back to the U. S this month with new covid restrictions required by the CDC. But Return has been rocky. This week. But all of the guests onboard this test crews and it was not a full ship. It was like one third full. Is the test crews and there's a record. They were gonna go see everything works great and Lo and behold, Two of the passengers have tested positive. Here's the problem. All of the guests were required to show a negative covid 19 test. And proof of vaccination 72 hours before they departed last Saturday. The crew is fully vaccinated. And guests are following the super tight protocols. And they say we're following all the CDC guidelines that we can possibly follow. And so, with all of that, they still came up with two that were positive now. They set sail from Saint Marc Martine. Operating at one third capacity to test the safety protocols.

US Cruises Could Restart Soon With 'Passenger Voyages by Mid-July'

"We found out that cruising might restart emit july with ninety. Five percent of passengers fully vaccinated. Long story short. What happened. Was that usa today. Gunman hands on a letter that was sent from the cdc to the cruise industry late at night. I believe it was wednesday and so this was like the east coast had already gone to bed and we. We're talking after eight. Pm pacific time. This news came out so we waited to film a video until we got more facts on. I believe thursday morning and it turned out that it was completely true. And that most everyone in the cruise industry received this letter. Believe it was from amy. Truffle letty who is the head of the maritime unit for cdc's cove nineteen response team and the letter basically said five k. We'll articles on our website with videos about this. But here's the breakdown. Ships can bypass the required simulated voyages. That were supposed to carry volunteers and jump straight to sailings with paying passengers. If ninety eight percent of the crew and ninety five percent of passengers are fully vaccinated k. Well we talked about in our videos. Where does this leave children. Because we know that kids under sixteen can't get the vaccine right now. The truth is we just don't know. All of the details are pending. Next cd said they were going to respond to applications from the cruise lines for simulated voyages within five days. Which was supposed to take sixty days before. So you're probably wondering. What are you talking about it that you just said that simulated voyages weren't necessarily anymore. Well after listening to the cruise line executives throughout the week what we learned that the cdc is giving them two paths they can take the almost fully vaccinated path to get back to cruising sooner. Or if they don't wanna do that they can still do simulated forages and they'll get a faster response from the. Cdc that's my understanding
