Out of a reported fifty six on board twelve people were killed and dozens more were wounded. Investigators soon determined that a fifty pound bomb had been placed in the bottom luggage locker of the coach hours before authorities immediately suspected the paramilitary group known as the provisional. Ira was behind the attack. The provisional ira sought to end british rule in northern ireland. To sever all ties with the united kingdom. The group had detonated bombs all over britain after a brief investigation in the early morning hours of february fourteenth law enforcement at handed twenty five year old judith ward in liverpool she was unknown provisional ira sympathizer who had also been a former soldier in the women's royal army corps. This not only gave her emotive. It meant that she likely new intimate details about the british armed forces including when and where the shuttle bus picked up its passengers. Police believed judith. Had helped place the bomb in the coach and were determined to get a confession. They disoriented judith and deprived her of sleep until she broke down days later. She not only admitted to being behind the m sixty two bombing but also claim to be involved in two other deadly attacks to bolster their case authorities obtained forensic evidence that proved judith had handled explosives following her arrest. They discovered trace amounts of nitroglycerin. Her hands and belongings to the crown. It was an open and shut case. However during her trial in october of nineteen seventy-four judith backtracked and denied having anything to do with the bombings at all while on the stand she tearfully admitted to making a false confession and said. I made the statements because i was exhausted. I did not know what to say. I was afraid to make matters. Worse in the months leading up to her trial judith had attempted to take her own life on two separate occasions. she was soon diagnosed with a personality disorder. While it's unclear exactly what condition she had judith was known to tell tall tales and embellish the truth back in february. She provided police with a confession. But since then she'd given additional information that contradicted her sworn statement unfortunately as her personality disorder worsened during the trial judith was unable to provide reliable testimony to establish her innocence on november fourth nineteen seventy four. She was found guilty of murder. She received twelve concurrent life sentences as well as an additional thirty years in prison while the crown was ecstatic to have an alleged terrorist behind bars. The provisional ira publicly maintained that judith ward was innocent. They claimed she wasn't even a member of their organization. However at that point no one seemed to care the authorities had found someone to take the fall for the attack and the case was closed until nineteen ninety one when a campaign to exonerate judith gained steam thanks to the tireless efforts of determined activists journalists and lawyers. She was able to appeal her conviction. In april of nineteen ninety two her legal team revealed that the forensic scientists working on her nineteen seventy four case had withheld critical information from the defense team. While the scientists had indeed found trace amounts of nitroglycerin. On june hands and belongings they conveniently forgot to mentioned that the chemical wasn't exclusively used to make bombs. It was also found in plenty of everyday household items. The fact that judith tested positive for nitroglycerine in no way meant that she had handled explosives. The lawyers also brought to light evidence that was concealed by the lead investigators in her initial trial on may eleventh nineteen ninety two. The crown finally conceded the appeal and forty three year old judith.

"One, it's the nine hundred nineteenth, and he's tending to the wounded during this war. He's basically watching his compatriots die all around him, and not from direct artillery fire, but from infected wounds, and in fact, most war historians agree that in prior to the nineteen forties, and that includes World War One the most common causes of death were complications of wounds through infection and other infectious diseases like tennis influenza et Cetera, so one could say. Fleming is quite motivated to find a solution to this. This problem and in Nineteen fifteen he serving in the Royal Army Corps, he publishes a whole paper about all the different kinds of bacteria that exist in war wounds, and how they survive in wounds, despite being treated by antiseptic solutions Housi-, working out what those different types of bacteria are kind of like awesome experiments, microscopes culture. They look under microscopes. Yeah, so you grow them in a petri dish and look and see what they look like, and actually I've I've sent you a picture exciting image of seventy. Was Hoping it was going to be this like. Paper, this like an encyclopedia of bacteria, which is a great name. Now it's a older committee. Paper is has on the bacteriology of septic wounds, delightful title, but he's under flemming up at the top I love the the little script there. He's written on it personally, and it says the authors compliment. Exclamation point makes me really happy I just think he's a big Fleming Fan. And I think number one. It's amazing. He's like serving on the frontlines of world. War One and he takes the time to write this paper. Do you can kind of see how passionate he is about solving this problem and Just. How big a problem it is! What's amazing? You said the the biggest cause of death in world will one? Would you say the complications of wounds getting infected on infectious diseases? And that's true for for wars throughout history like World War, one and previous so many more are likely to die, not from the war itself, but just from getting an infected wound. Like we saying you, Greg follow if your bike in the nineteen twenties you could die from that wound Harvard. Important question many they had a lab above a casino and I know nerds alike. Did. They basically work. Are Loophole Unwritten Cy Casino well? Here's the thing. It's World War One. It's a bombed-out casino in. I want them to do a movie where they represent time research and fifty seven time Polka. I mean who knows God knows what they were getting up to. Poor Lad's needed. Did you want to see a movie? I want to see a movie where they. START THEY START Fleming story in that setting and it's just. It's like Oh James Bond. One like Casino Royale, but make it grungy fourteen and also a microbiology lab love I'm invested anyway, so he manages to Survive World War One, which is kind of Regulus in its own right, and he comes back from this war and continue this research in bacteriology because he is obviously very invested, he's super passionate about this and in nineteen twenty two. He performs what I think is possibly one of my favorite experiments. Of all time he gets a cold. And what do you get when you get a Cold Greg? It's literally the end of the lane. How you feel you have a cold I was going to say. How do you treat it? My used to swear by an orange and a glass of port. Just GonNa. Say Shadow escape. Would you get? Exactly throat running. is so fleming sees his snotty nose as an excellent lab resource. Yes, and he takes a petri dish where he already cultivating some bacteria on some are in a petri dish and he ago excuse me. He harvests quote, unquote some of his coat, unquote nasal for NGO Mucus, hit snot and puts it in this petri dish. Never. Again my friend nasal for NGO Mucus. From here on out. and He puts it in this petri dish where he's growing these bacteria. That's true scientific spirit. I mean that is a man after my own heart. It's like let's see what happens. I just WanNa know and according to his compatriots, and this is of course, some here say he's also not really known for his lab organizational skills, so he leaves the speed ish out on a lab bench for several weeks. Imagine if penicillin was actually nasal. ENJO- Mucus. Guess what he comes back to this petri dish that's just been chilling on a lab bench at room temperature for weeks, and obviously the bacteria he was cultivating in. It have grown except where he put his snot. What's not what you would think right so the answer to that no as antibacterial properties. Thinking Ninety. It's not what you would think, and so technically all right I'm getting ahead of myself to exert. It investigates further. He isolates this active compound, and it turns out to be something called Laces Zaim, which is an enzyme that your body produces naturally. It's an enzyme that has mild antibacterial properties technically license I'm is the first antibiotic ever discovered, but we never hear about it because. It actually turns out to not be that useful. It's a great story. It's really exciting, but you can't make drugs that are widely against a lot of different kinds of bacteria from it. It's very difficult difficult to scale up. It's pretty mild, and it's not very active against the stuff that really doesn't number on infected wounds per se, it's like keeps in check the micro biota of your nose. You know so, it's not. It doesn't turn out to be that useful, but it lays the groundwork for another influential accident, but we will get into that. Right after we hear visage.
