"roy williams" Discussed on Courtside with Seth Greenberg

"And running hot. I am absolutely running hat. I just read this little thing from Kyle. Tucker about The situation with be Andre Williams Deandra Williams is the transfer that where he played all eighteen games. Guys Journey has been everywhere and explicit dead. And now he's got this guru guy all right or some visor are quote unquote handler. Right who basically I think. It's Kenneth Roy. Basically came out on on radio. I don't care where to keep those to school and actually I got a chance to visit Penny Hardaway this year and I was really liked. But basically he basically said Kentucky they didn't play by viral holes. You don't play like my rules. You have no chance to get my guy. I control this. They talked to the kid who actually is the prospect and become to the Mother Kentucky. Right which is obviously what you would do if you're in a recruiting process in a legitimate situation but my man came out and said forget about this. They went behind my back. I control the situation all right first of all. Who is Kenneth Roy? Secondly let me give you a little history of Data Williams twenty sixteen went to high school in. Houston some Papa Pretzel Hope School. I've never heard of it twentieth. Seventeen all he was missing in action. Neither do anything we can find out where did was twenty eight thousand. He went to Oklahoma City to play for some other pop up prep school where Kenneth Roy was his coach. He was ineligible so he went to Evansville non-qualifier he played eighteen games. Two guys twenty four years old right now. Twenty four years old you and your mother and this guy gets on a radio station in Memphis and basically expound and this is the problem I understand. You got to recruit to circle of influence when you're crew kit but this is the problem. The focal point of the recruitment is the prospect and his parents. And at this guy is I don't know the guy but he's obviously absolute joke and this is the problem. We have in college basketball right now. This is the problem we have moving forward. If you have the one time exception quiet rather I mean you are. You're preaching to the choir. Look it's one thing if somebody has done a great job for it's one thing if if you've really excelled on a disguise to legend maybe maybe maybe the player has made. Maybe he asked. But it's it's another thing when you as a handler quote handler. Enabler to I do too. But it's a it's another thing when you start putting your ego in front of what the Hell's going on with the player. I mean look if I am a handler of a player. I'm thrilled to death. That Kentucky wants them. I'm thrilled to death. That MEMPHIS wants. I'm thrilled to death and I have respect for those particular places because one one year ago or one year from now. Nobody's going to remember the player and nobody's going to remember the Ham. That's just you and I have seen this so many times. How important these guys are. And then at the end of the day history dictates. We're not gonNA see the best thing you can do it but this is what people want. This is what our colleagues wanted. Espn this is what our colleagues in the media want everything is supposed to be done for the player and the player is never wrong. Let's get handlers and ball and let's take the coach out of it which is asinine which is ridiculous and the idea. I've heard so many of our colleagues say well the guy's not gonNA fall. You let players transfer well. You know what this guy didn't didn't fall if that's the level when players didn't transfer when players listened to coach. There's a great picture of Michael Jordan. Ali Unbelievable Dean Smith listening to a coach and it worked out pretty well for him. It doesn't work out for these guys that listen to the quote unquote handlers And I'm it by. I'M ACTUALLY MATT. Painter was on my show. Just Rip Reysen is Izzo. Came on and then Frank. Martin came on my radio show. I just wish more coaches would stand up and say this is crap because all we hear from is a media that doesn't know will never and never know it's funny. I twin something out on this. I got a text message immediately from Frank Martin Greenie. I just saw this tweet. I have no idea who this kid is or what happened. However why doesn't anyone ever speak about? These are the issues that we have a college coach as college coaches. Why don't call that? Are being held hostage by fools like that guy. All the new wave recruiting service guys have made that guy popular us. Bad guys hundred percent Babe Frank Martin. Those right how about how about you. Stand up and you say look. I'm not going to buy. How about not buying stuff from these guys? How about eliminating these guys? How about not? That's on Frank Mart. In my opinion. That's that Frank Martin can whine about. We're being held hostage but to me. This is on the coach. And this is what I've been trying to do. And Frank was great on my show is it was great. Painter was off the charts. How `Bout we? How about we as coaches or they coaches. I'm not a coach. Stand up for yourselves. Quick Look Matt. Do you remember the day I remember doing this coming? In the Indiana's basketball offers from bowling green. I was the director of OPS. And all of a sudden I looked and the dudes the assistance in Indiana have bought six of one guy service like so they can get in with some idiot. recruiting Guy Stop. Don't demand we're only going to deal with coaches. Wurley going deal with parents. We're only going to deal with the kid. Other coaches coaches can wind about it man up and stop it. I'll look I'm I'll tell you what my last year at tech I went. We were spending a ungodly amount of money in scattered services. I bought a guy and I said put him on the board. All right. We're cutting this thing and half. This is ridiculous I said I. I used the word I said. We're getting held hostage by these guys. I mean it's our job to evaluate. Here here's the problem. I don't need these gurus to evaluate players to me. I mean like like seriously. That's what that's what staff is for. That's what that's what your job is. Identify and evaluate all right. So I'M GONNA listen to some guy that absolutely first of all has an agenda and is clueless and he's going to impact my my success or I'm GonNa let him hold hostage because I can get maybe a home visitor. Come on that I'm saying Chicago. I mean you'd be a break. That's what I'm saying. Coaches came together and soon doing it instead instead ridiculous. It's almost like this It's almost like current me if I'm wrong. The high end guys deal through shoe companies. The Not quite the high end guys deal with the handler. The the guy the and then the rest of the People Kinda just recruit to me. You eliminate this eliminate your the coaches. It's your you're being paid a TON OF MONEY. Do Your job eliminate the clowns and let's go but don't quit whining about. You're not held hostage by anybody. You allow yourself to be held hostage. Look at now. I think that's a good point. I I'm GONNA be interested. We're going to have Roy Williams on today and we need to talk to obviously about the last dance. I'd like to talk to coach about the evolution of Michael Jordan from where he was in Wilmington North Carolina as a high school junior Iran. I remember story five star to the end of the last dance. I made like coaches coaches. Seen it from beginning to end up close and impersonal. I I I'm fascinated to ask about that. You know the greatest thing about i. I've never really heard. Lebron James have a handler. I'm never really heard Kobe Brian Handler. I've never really heard Michael Jordan have had handler. I never heard. Patrick Ewing have had a hand trick. Person ever really had a handler. Why is it that the great players? The great players don't have handlers but these guys that have been to twenty four schools at twenty four years old. Have handlers. Your it's amazing to me like even Zion Williamson and all this crap that that he may or may not be involved in hell s through his parents. Why is it that? Why is it that these great players don't have handlers? But the slaps do it's. It's interesting to me coach. Williams. What's going on? Hi how we feel by the way I coach Williams by accident. Edco take this because I've been spirit by accident. Facetime return call the day and actually that's the limited capabilities to think. He's actually missed Wanda but but so she's on the phone while he's talking to me and he's got this beer going right now. I mean he looks like the most interesting man in the world you could be doing like those commercials right now it's unborn beard is just it? Looks Marvelous. Said quit? Suck IT UP. Son Radio Show for crying really more. What the Hell I J J. Right hat as it. It's almost disappointed because you know I mean like J. Reid is like George Clooney and it's all gravy. It just kill you. You got the gray hair so we knew you. Let's face you know spring chicken coach. I had cut. I had to trim it because it was getting so long that I was fiddling with like all my players. They fiddled with their hair. You know when they do all the different things with their hair and we're in a team meeting every two or three guys up their hands at the hair us. You'll leave your hair loan. Pay attention got wanted to give them a fair to trim so that was a couple of days ago. Got a question for you Dan. I was just talking about this. We started saying we sit like you're watching last dance. You lived last dance from the beginning to the very end like evolution of Michael from where he was as a kid in Wilmington Nia same at the end of the show. Like what what was going through your mind you know. It's a good terminology to their seth because I remember seeing him when he was seventeen years old. Come to our camp and That spring before and I'd call what we thought were all the best players say you're North Carolina and some in South Carolina Virginia to try to get them to come to our campus. We sit up but to you. GotTa Pay But Michael Cain and I had been the GM three different. Twenty minute sessions in a three hour period on Sunday and in Eddie Kogler. That did you see anybody liked it. So that may AC- the Best six-foot-four-inch high school I've ever seen. He said blankety blank. Who was that? And I said Michael Jordan and by the end of the week coach Smith was having a dinner and lunch with breakfast.

Big 12, Big Ten, ACC among tourneys to ban fans

"On the college level all the big conferences announcing that as of Thursday fans will be restricted from their games some of the conferences like the big east were a little slower than others to make the decision but ultimately they came to the same decision as the other conferences the NC double a saying it's tournament as a whole will not have fans in the stands Wednesday we had Boston University with the patriot league we have the SEC tournament the big ten tournament Big East Tournament ACC tournament which is here on ESPN radio the ACC night ending with Syracuse beating North Carolina tar heels coach Roy Williams this is a very serious problem you know last night I made a joke about how that it frustrated me because they said people it was sixty when I'm sixty nine but this is the most serious problem that I can remember in our country that there's no quick answer for you know the stock market's going crazy well it's just see if you can do some things but this is a this is a virus this is a possibility of people getting very sick and dying and it's something that in my mind is more serious than anything I can

UNC's Lost Season

"Jeff Bordello. I'm a little shook. North Carolina finished the regular season. They lose to do because that's fine we're used to that but they're the lowest seed in the ACC tournament North Carolina. So some how you would view this season for the tar heels. I mean they're arguably the most disappointing team in the country. Jeff Portillo is a college basketball insider for ESPN. And I know we have to take some other factors into account with injuries. And Karl Anthony and things like that but you know this was a preseason top ten team that like you said is going to be the bottom seed in the ACC tournament in the ACC is not goodness here. It's a it's a pretty down league you know. There are Miami. Nbc in Wake Forest Pittsburgh. None of those teams are very good and Carolina is at the bottom of all that and to me. That's shocking you know. This is one of the best of all time blueblood like I said a top ten preseason team and four months later five later. They're the worst team in the ACC. It's one of the bigger stories in college football this season and I think you could really make the case that there are the biggest disappointment in college hoops so let's go back to October. Preseason rankings come out North Carolina's in the top ten. They're sitting at number nine refresh everybody in what the real expectations were coming into this season for this team. I mean they a lot of guys from last year but they did bring in what people expected was an impact recruiting class was led by Karl Anthony Centerpiece of Roy Williams retooling effort. It's chole Anthony. Going the top freshman in the country making his debut tonight from of a raucous crowd here that the dome he was expected by pretty much everyone to be the most productive freshman in the country. That's how he wasn't high school that's where he was on the scene. He was a guy that was going to put up big points. He was gonNA put a big assist numbers. He's going to rebound and he was going to win games. That's just that's just what he was at the high school level and people expected him to to be that same player Carolina and it. Kinda set up perfectly for him because he was able to come in and this was a team that didn't have any real goto guys coming back. So they said hey collapsed. And you're getting the ball from day one and you're gonNA lead us and you know it kind of looked good. You know in the first game of the season. He was terrific. He had thirty four points. Eleven rebounds five assists debut for coal. Anthony lost a lot of stars to the NBA. After last season with the go one superstore Chambal. Whom the feeling was that? You know this team is going to be okay. Even despite the losses and along with him they brought into Grad transfer. Is that you know. We're probably two of the five or seven best. Grad transfer is in the country was Christian Keeling from Charleston southern just NPR's from William and Mary and and that added some experience at its veteran leadership and combined with a couple of other guys are Mondo Baker was a five star recruit garrison brooks was a two year starter download so i. I just think that people thought you combine the newcomers with the guys returning and even though there weren't any stars coming back from last year's team there was enough here to to compete for an ACC title and Roy Williams has done this before where his team is is written off a little bit in the preseason and under rank behind teams like Duke and he finds a way to win and that's just what he does and and I think people expected him to do it again with the guys coming in and coming back well so now you've got a team that has preseason expectations they get into. The season was the first time this season there was the first real sign of concern that the season might not go the way some had hoped. I think it was a couple of things I think one was even when they were winning the game. They won their first five games of the season. But even some of those the Notre Dame win the Alabama win. There were some signs of. Is this team going to be as good as we thought were Williams? I you get the sense. He hasn't loved all aspects of his teams. Play here today. You know he has. He has not name barely beat. Notre Dame eleven point margin was it. It wasn't addictive. How close the season opener was against Notre Dame so I think there was. Okay let's give it time. Let's let Cole Anthony. And the other freshman get acclimated and this team will figure it out but they lose by twenty five at home 'til Ohio state to start December. You know then they lose that. Virginia you know losing effort gene is not not a usually a big concern. This is not a vintage Virginia team and I think most people realize that at that time and then they lose to Wofford. They ended up finishing below five hundred in the southern conference. Terriers come to Chapel Hill and knock off a top twenty five North Carolina squad. And that's when the you know the eyebrow start raising what's going on with his team are they poised to be this massive disappointment and obviously once call. Anthony gets hurt. The wheels fall off from their breaking news. Call Anthony out four to six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus. Well at that point you know maybe things are a little bit concerning. But they're going to get two. Acc conference play. You said it the ACC not the best conference in the world so they get to the ACC schedule. How's that go form? You look at their schedule and you said okay they can. They can weather the storm three straight home games in. Acc play against Georgia Tech Pit Clemson and they had games against Pittsburgh Virginia Tech Miami even a bad UNC team or even a a mediocre UNC. Team could go six in Owen. Those games it was kind of the the bottom half of the league and they went one and five losing the first five games of that stretch. Seventy nine seventy seven double-overtime Virginia tech knocking off North Carolina. I think that was almost getting the end. When you look back the schedule what would be the one moment that sort of pushed everything over to the point in return honestly I think it was after Columbia comes back a long ways away. Eleven Games without call Anthony but he will play tonight. Yeah the five hundred. Unc team suddenly. Jay has a lot of juice and he'd be Miami. Nc State then call and he comes back for a home game in Boston College and you know. They weren't very good at the time but they tended ten three and six in the ACC and you know the the narrative was kind of okay. If Cole Anthony Comes back the committee will look at them and say you know with call. Anthony this is an NCAA tournament team. He's going to be on the roster in the NCAA tournament they're going to factor that in so I think people started wondering can. Unc string together. Some wins and make a late run and in his first game back. You lose at home to Boston. College straight three other time. He's spoiled return. I think that was the sign that it's not going to happen so that's not. Obviously the only epic moment we all continue to think about from the season tickets back to the first game between North Carolina and Duke. The Duke Game was a game that that could have turned things around at least changed the narrative about Carolina and to lose in that fashion. Another late blown lead. Losing to your biggest rival do comes back not to be Carolina to me. That was that was a really low mon it just because it it could have been really a season changing moment for Carolina and the way it happened it just it kind of sent them even further down into the season

"Eighteen wins at Kansas and four hundred and sixty six North Carolina fact. No coaches even won three hundred games at two different division. One schools coach joins us this morning. Coach how are you got some news for You Dad? Yeah Tom Brady's coming back to North Carolina to be reinvent himself to be North Carolina basketball player. He saw a game last weekend and he said he could help. You could help twin Jimmy. Kimmel standing up on the Scores table and it's receiver saying he's coming back. Tom told me I am. I'm coming back as a college basketball player. I appreciate that coach. Thank you you heard it for my did. I don't know if I hear a second but I did hear I there. What what football team do you follow? Follow the panthers a little bit. Because I love McCaffrey. Ron Rivera was always so great. To us Mr Richardson. I knew him when I was insistent but I I really don't follow a lot of teams as much as I do. Coaches are individuals. But I'll throw your curve ball my favorite. Nfl team of all. Time is the Tennessee. Titans because they started as a Houston oilers and George Blanda and Billy Cannon and Charlie Toe are and Charlie Hennessy. I mean they had all those guys and it's the first pro football game I ever saw on TV. And so I've been a Houston oilers Earl Campbell fan ever since you play football in high school. No quitting the eighth grade because those guys just getting bigger and I wasn't any bigger. I wait a cool hundred pounds as a ninth grader. In high school but After the eighth grade those causes kept getting bigger and bigger and I didn't. How would you sum up? If somebody didn't see your team play this year. How would you sum up? Maybe in one sentence this season so far that I should have continued coaching football. I did coach High School football for four years as an assistant. So that's what they would say. What is our team? This year is that I should've found another location. But do you start to doubt yourself. Well I think Danny I think it. I've always doubted myself every game after the game. I said God I should have done this. I should have done that and I don't know if I can say dowdy myself but I've always questioned myself and I think probably questions yourself during years like this more than you ever do. And so it's a reason when we do have great years. I really try to spend some time to go back and look and make sure that I look and study things a great deal. Even we'll have great years much less what we've what we've been going through this year. I am to be honest. I was worried about you a little bit this year. and this wasn't health related just from afar. I was like you know. I don't know if you're enjoying yourself and you know there's a challenge there every year for you for every coach. But I don't know this. They got a lot more than I thought it would well. I think I'm lucky because we haven't had. I've never gone through anything like this but I've been so so lucky but I do take it personally. I do take it home with me. Do Wake up in the middle of the night and And I haven't done as good a job with his team. I think. Think that The Way I've You Wait My coaching is did. I get the team to play to their potential. Did I get every individual to play their potential and and be able to make good decisions under adversity and to come through under adversity? And I haven't gotten this team to To do as well you know. It's it's kind of thing that It still bothers me out in sleep very well last night so. I don't know that I'll start sleeping better to we start winning more. We've we've won three and a road and that that makes it better but I've just never gone through this and it's been hard it really has and But I'd really sit back a lot of times. I think that other people really really have some problems in my problem is not trying to trying to figure out how to get one stop. We've lost six games this year. That if we'd Gotten one defensive stop We could have been six no instead we got zero and so we were in six and those games. Yeah then that would give you. Nineteen wins on the season. And you know you wouldn't be in the position where you are where you're going to have to. You're going to win out to make the tournament. I'm guessing that would be. That's what I would think Kemba Walker Style and You know he's the lab their team not just Kimble but Kimble was sensational but they won their last five to get into tournament in all six games in the NCWA tournament. So it can be done. It's it's not easy to say the least but I'll give you the difference in Roy Williams and coach Dean Smith. There's about a million of a million miles. My first year as an assistant coach North Carolina. We won five games where the The team had the last shot to win the game and missed all five and so we were five and this year. We're always sick so a toll coach Smith that's really good coach. A little bit of chuckled. At it a couple years after that but There's no chuckling going on in Roy Ville right now. Who did you hear from after you drop the F bomb after the game against North Carolina or Notre Dame? You know almost no one. It really was one one fellow coats said. I'm glad you're normal laughed but I didn't laugh at the time. It's something I shouldn't have done and it's just it just came out the question sort of bothered me and And let that get to me and it was something. I'm not proud of but You know I'm not proud of done. It's just I haven't done in the front of With microphones in front of me. He's Roy Williams. North Carolina head coach. Got Duke coming up on Saturday three time national champ. You said You bring your losses home with you There's no rule where you know your wife said or you know. Somebody says hey. Don't bring that home or leave it at the door. You know you know it's crazy when we win. I'll tell the guys enjoy to midnight and then we start moving ahead in the losses just They stick with me. Dan and in fact The night before I left North Carolina to go to Kansas as the head coach. We had dinner coats missiles and he said his biggest worry about me is how hard I took the losses as an assistant and it gets a million times worse as the head coach and he low balled. It it's a lot worse than that but It is you know when I was in high school coach and I thought they were too bad things about coaching having to cut players and losing and so in college. It's only one you know. Just the the losing but I do I sit back and try to tell myself how lucky I am and I am and good gracious. God knows them but the Look Guy. You can possibly be the losses. Do Go home with me. And it's It's hard but it's it's hard on every coach and it's My wife says nobody takes it as hard as I do and But she has to live through it but thankfully this summer will be forty seven year. So she's she's put up with a lot. She goes to bed closes. The door locks me outside or whatever she feels like doing. What's the Scouting Report on Duke? Great team great coach big inside threat with Vernon Carey Point Guard trae Jones. Who's just one of the best leaders in college basketball? Who's was a really good player. Last year turned into a great player. This year Some talented freshman like a state cash Stanley who jumps out of the GM. And what you have to do. In Our opinion my opinion Roy Williams you have to tack. You have to score. Because they're going to score so you better keep scoring if you have a scoring drought in that game it's You go home with a sad look on your face surprised at Zion success in the NBA. No not at all. I think I saw him in high school more than any other head coach Over to your period I was down there like thirteen times and just thought he was the most amazing specimen I'd ever seen him lose him Wish I could find out. If I knew that I wouldn't WANNA change What do you did a great job? But I'll tell you what he was. Some did some of the most amazing things in high school that I've ever seen and yet always worried about his knees and his ankles is as lower body because the guy jump so high with that amount of weight that there's a collision every time he comes down and But I just think he's He's got this airbag that people enjoy and people like him. He's very gregarious personality. And and jumps higher plays harder and runs faster than just about anybody. That's ever played the game at that size and You know he's he's got to stand the test of time in the NBA but truly one of the greatest high school players and college players. That I've ever seen Roy great to talk to you and I. I hope you have fun the rest of the season and I'm sure that you'll bounce back next season but Well we're GONNA try to try to win his as we can and then go see if I can make a Birdie for a couple of weeks and then we'll start worried about Next year we've got a good group coming in and hopefully I'll do a better job. Coaching them Dan. Thank you coach. Good to talk to you. Good to talk to partner Roy Williams and you know what he's put it on himself now he did say. This is the least gifted team I've ever coach in the time that I've been back and that was I think after a loss to Georgia Tech. But he's taken ownership of this. But you know you're seeing some of these coaches who haven't been through this. There are a lot of coaches who go through this every year. It's just coach K.'s. Had some moments this year Royce had some moments this year. John Calipari has had some moments. This year Tom Izzo had moments this year. Jim Boeheim this year. You just not used to seeing these marquee coaches have meltdowns like this Roy. Dropping an f-bomb went. Wait Roy distrupt. Enough bomb their coach. K. Calling out the fan base there saying. Stop trolling these kids. They're eighteen nineteen years of age. You WanNa Question. My coaching Camman into cameron indoor and look up to the rafters. They're like this is sort of unchartered waters for a. Lotta these hall of fame coaches there. I saw this step. Big Ten is currently projected to get as many as ten teams into the NCWA. Turn the only conference ever get ten or more in. The tournament was back in two thousand eleven. That was the big east got eleven teams in the most. The big ten is had all time is eight teams and that was last year. Yup You're still the big ten. Make It ten teams then say tournament but that's not all the teams in the big ten. Come on man big ten. I know well you spend all that money on a your logo. Yeah you can't change the big ten. How many teams are in the big ten twelve issues that they should just make it that the ten teams that get in are the only ones that stay in everybody else's cut. Yeah Yeah you get relegated yet. Relegated out you get relegated to but that means rutgers always gets relegated wise records in this year. I don't know they're good. John Records is good that they are getting in right. Okay good they stay in basketball football Yamakawa gear from Nebraska basketball. We've got to keep them in the big ten to in last place. Yeah Yeah Paul. There would be a playoff right now between Nebraska northwestern for relegation e. Yeah Yeah I watch that. So rutgers is making the tournament right. Yeah okay. Well I mean at. This point is so hard to not make the tournament it true. That just means you're really stink Nebraska Nebraska. Because you know we love you. The big ten has eight nationally ranked teams at of its twelve teams. The big ten has eight out of of their twelve team drugs. Do they have fourteen teams in the big ten now fourteen? I thought I was twelve. So now we can ever own mini playoff for relegation whether you added Maryland and he added rutgers the Preska Nebraska..

Shortest NBA Career, Ever

"Royce. It's been exactly ten years this Saturday since James Names on curry who I should note is not related to Steph curry made his NBA debut. I found this story fascinating. Because here's a guy who has seemingly on on the cusp of achieving all of his dreams. And then poof it's over. He's out of the League. How did you go about finding him? It was a really long on kind of winding path to it and it was somewhat of a passion project. Part of me was I was kind of scared. That's a story outside my comfort zone a little a bit to just completely cold call somebody and track them down and find out because you know on the other side of it. You're going to see like the story is three point nine seconds right and then it's open ended after that. Where's he at? What's he doing is the jailing does he oversees? He'd still trying to play basketball. I have no idea you you can put these stories in your mind. I kinda WanNa know about that. And then they kind of just sort of get lost in the shuffle and you keep thinking about it and you keep wondering about it. And that's what level with me is that finally it was like you know what I'm going to find out about this and I got kind of approval to pursue this story and at that time it was like okay. We don't know where he's at. You know he could be still playing professional basketball somewhere in like Moscow or Turkey. You're the Israel or wherever and it just so happened that when I finally got in touch a to a James on curry through instagram of all places. Because that's how you are a reporter in two thousand twenty. He got back to me and he told me to call them and I said so. Where do you live now? And he told me he lived in ended Oklahoma. which just so happened to be an hour away from me so sad to say I mean up? My editors were quite happy that the travel budget got significantly reduced instead of flying to Moscow or something had to drive up the road. Enid so Royce you reach out to James on you find out. He lives near you. You can get his story you were drawn to his story because he had the shortest career in NBA history. Three point nine seconds. Did he know that when I approached him very much so if you type it in on Youtube if you type in his name. There's a video out there that somebody made and it's got over a million views or something like that and it's kind of like a awhile did you fact in the NBA and James on understood that he was basically the answer to a trivia question and not a flattering trivia. Your question was he a highly touted recruit so james on Curry was really a household name Nina and so much so that in North Carolina lineup basketball history. He's a true legend. He scored more points in high school than Michael Jordan ever heard of them. James Worthy David Thomson and he said that record and he was a five star recruit. He was committed in North Carolina. He was a big big deal and people from all around the state would come to watch him play. He was routinely scoring forty thirty. Five fifty fifty five points at night. He had a dedicated beat reporter that would come and follow him around. He was destined to be the next Great College Basketball Player order and thereby the next grade professional basketball player so from there does he get all the offers two big schools fast track to the NBA. Say He did have the office. Everybody recruiting him. It was it was set up for him to go play for Roy Williams at North Carolina and lead them to national championships and get drafted. Be One and done player go the NBA. All that type of stuff was set up for him to happen. The crazy Roese thing about it was. He plays a game against Graham High School and I think he scored forty seven in that game is team was on the fast track to a state title and the next morning. He shows up at school and he gets called into the principal's office so he walks down the hall. He walks in the principal's office and he sees a bunch of police officers officers in there. And he thinks that they're in there. Because I want to ask him for an autograph and instead of that they put him in handcuffs. James on was caught selling drugs to an undercover cop. James is on sold him. Marijuana and his total take Fort Meena was ninety five dollars so while he was dropping shopping. forty-seven on Graham High School. They were printing up a warrant for his arrest. So at that point everything completely changed from didn't take long for North Carolina to pull his scholarship. He was kicked out of school kicked off the basketball team. He finished high school at an alternative school and really at that point just didn't know if he was going to get another chance. So what does he decide to do. Angst as you might believe since he was so so good some other schools got involved but this kind of random place jumped out to him and really kind of hooked victim and that was Oklahoma State University and part of what Oklahoma State had to sell for him was their coach. Eddie Sutton was a recovering alcoholic and he understood second chances and of course he brought him to Oklahoma state because first of all he's really good second of all because he saw something in James on and thought it was worthwhile taking that shot on. So how does he we do. When he gets to Oklahoma state he was good? There was a game where he was playing in Madison Square Garden. Achieving his dream they're playing against Syracuse. And he was part of a big second half running Ron and three on the insist this cowboys happily Dick. Vitale called him a diaper Dandy and it was a dream come true feeling feeling this outboard played one of the greatest games in all time in college basketball history at triple overtime game against Kevin Durant and Texas. The Dow Jones scored forty something Durant scored forty something and it's known as to be one of the Great Games it starts getting you know. Draft Talk. Scouts are coming to watch him play so it all kind of felt like it. It had come together for James on and he was going to have a shot after all. So curry gets drafted by the Bulls. What happens next? So it shows the Bulls and he's he's sent down to the D. League. He's brought backup. He sent back down. He's brought backup. He's bouncing back and forth and in his mind. He's he's not really getting his chance. And he the as a couple incidents that again pop-up form one. He was at the D. League showcase in Idaho and he gets busted on public urination and gets arrested for it the Bulls suspend them one game. And now it's like you know he's got another thing kind of tagged with them there and here's another incident where he's driving to the airport in Chicago Gago. He says he gets lost on the way to the airport and he misses his flight. Going to New York. And that's another strike from the Bulls and in his mind that that was one that like they couldn't get over over. There was a time where their coach Scott Scales kind of told the team this practices an open tryout for playing time and he felt like he showed everybody up he was he was crushing it. He killed everybody thirty. On the court. And the scrimmage and Scott pulled him aside and I think that scowls thought it was a compliment but it really wasn't at least not to James on but he said you're going to be the best player in the D. League and and that kind of crush James on spirits and GE just goes through the season and he just never gets a chance with them and they end up cutting them after the year so he gets cut by the Bulls else and after that he's bouncing around the Euroleague D. League teams. How does he make his way back to the NBA? Hey bounces around. He gets them chances and he gets drafted. He's actually the first draft pick ever for the Bakersfield Jam. There the D League affiliate for the Los Angeles Clippers Clippers and he's doing great becomes a D. League all star and he finally gets his call he gets the call. Uh what happens next so he gets a call up and suit up for the clippers there in Boston. They're playing the Celtics. It's late third quarter. There's some foul trouble issues. Injury issues for Rondo now. The final possession for the Boston Celtics. The James on gets says number called Mike Dunleavy says game with three point nine seconds ago. There's three point nine seconds left on the clock in the third quarter James on jumps up runs runs the scores table and look look comes in James on Curry Hey is first appearance ever in an NBA game. What a thrill? It's gotTa be dream fulfilled hears his my name called out in the arena runs out on the court. He's guarding region. Rondo Sri couldn't have expected it right at this moment a week ago. I sure didn't expect Eddie. There's a quick play run. Not much happens doesn't touch. The ball doesn't do anything other than just kind of stand there with a half. The A reasonable job lookers pretty happy to be down by only five buzzer. Sounds runs off the court and De'andre Jordan. Subs is in for him to start the fourth quarter and he never steps on the floor again and like literally never because the next morning he wakes up. He gets a call from the clippers the next morning telling him he's been

UNC-Alabama: Roy Williams Postgame

"Well Roy Williams his seventeenth season at his alma mater North Carolina four hundred fifty eight win just one hundred thirty three losses in this career eight seventy six up to thirty four town that's pretty good and yesterday's when put in a tie for fourth place in division one basketball history in coaching victories tied even now with the great at all rob here his overall thoughts on it eight hundred seventy six when the tar heels victory over Alabama yesterday was pretty game I've ever watched we have twenty turnovers they've been averaging over twenty we only got them fourteen so that was a good but I think the back forty second shot opportunities we shoot for us down the stretch when we got it eight or nine and then select a score with me is the first shot and get a rebound and put it back in I think that was a huge part of the force there are plenty of similarities between Roy Williams tar heels in the maze of blue especially after eight both teams committed at least twenty turnovers both also that a player back

2019 NCAA championship: Virginia wins its first national title

"Like this. Virginia that seventy five seventy three next to going over time. How big is younger. My goodness. Monsters twenty seven hundred Westwood One. Aa radio network hunter coming up big twenty seven points in the Egypt game. Kyle guy had twenty four Virginia hits all twelve free. Throw attempts in the overtime period. And they come away with the title as you heard eighty five seventy seven in OT. They beat Texas Tech the eighth national title game to go to overtime the first since two thousand eight when Kansas beat Memphis the first national title game between two teams that had never previously appeared in the title game since nineteen seventy nine Magic Johnson's Michigan state team against Larry bird's. Indiana state team Virginia wins this one first title game between schools that had previously never wanted title since nineteen Ninety-one UNLV beat Duke, Tony Bennett becoming the ninth active division one coach to win a national title. I think it was a terrific game to see how these. Guys, played the one thing I said to him before in the locker room. I said you guys faced pressure that no team in the history of the game is faced will really all year. But but being down fourteen against garner web. I said, and you did not panic in that moment, and you fought, and you found a way out I said that I think has prepared you for this moment to the handle the pressure or the the intensity of national championship game. And these guys stepped up to me that was it appeared from Istambul to be a high level game. And you know, we scored eighty five that was in that setting. So good stuff. Hey, coach Bennett. Zach peerless Augusta free press there's a picture in your house. You've talked about before these three guys. Jay huff part of that twenty sixteen class. They've seen a lot of things now and their time at you've yet what are the emotions now attached to that picture? And you know, how does this change that picture in the feelings that you'll see when you see it? Yeah. When they came on the recruiting. Visit remember telling them, look, you're. The foundation has been laid by guys, you know, Joe, and Malcolm are here and all the guys went before. And we had one Sommese championships who've been to be lead eight I said, we're asking to build on that foundation. Even at that house on the hardest step. But if you're willing said, we'll take a chance at mentioned, the rocky post just I said, I want guys wanna chance to title fight and see them come in either as young men or boys and grow into men this season. And I'll mention what happened last year that that can only mature you. I don't know of anything else that would allow these guys to build a handle this situation, the playthrough stuff and to have a perspective and poise and resiliencey unless they went through something that hard, and they're very there's really good players. They don't probably get enough credit. Well, I think someone do their town. But they had something different about them collectively. I just one of our themes. I told them before the Auburn game as just bring your two fish and five loaves. It's a story in the bible. And I said it'll be enough. I said it'll it'll be enough for the masses. I said when you guys play the right way, the collectiveness of it takes over. And I've watched it, and I've stepped back, and I've seen this now seen mature through everything. And for them to do what they did, you know and how they've won. It's a great story really ofensive -ly. It seemed as if the Andre took charge there at the end you telling take charge or sometimes it seems like he's trying not. To take. That's you know, Dan regularly. Let's come in that he he I think he grew up in a way in this tournament in the second half of the Auburn game. And definitely and he was getting his shots. But he just he you saw them and that when he puts that into boy, it's he special, but no he trying to get on the ball ties. So good and our players. They understand. He's like all right. We gotta get him the ball in these situations and go to work, and you know, we did call. I'm not sure what the answer the question. We did. Call an action form to hit that three in the corner. And then one time time to great pass. But he yeah. I thought he really showed an aggressiveness that we needed. You. Need your top players to step up and make plays. And he did it on both ends you just speak to one that the poyser guy showed the overtime. And also the the previous games prepare them for that. They didn't seem either out of gas. They didn't to motion in handling the overtime. No. Well, I tell you we we had. Three Saturday, Monday games. We played Duke at home, and then we had to go to Carolina. And I I think I said this in the podium before. But I said this is how it's going to be in the tournament. And this is how we're going to prepare on Sunday. And and we did that every time we had those games, and we did it in the NCAA tournament that day in between and they knew what to expect. And I said you're built for this. You're prepared for this. Because this is what we did. And we started that process in January and that Carol do Carolina weekend. And I said just get after it, and we worked in between a lot of people's walked, actually, I don't know. What people do I just know from my experiences a coach in the Pac ten home important that day in between and how you prepare well prepare well and get after it. And so I think they they stepped in the moment they face pressure through the year through the turnament and all that stuff played into it. And that a lot goes to our strength coach, Mike Curtis. I mean, he has those guys as finely tuned machines. And and they just they work. We were smart at the end of the year with how much rest we gave them and prepare them. It's just a balance. Obviously, it it hit Tony Bennett with the national championship ninth. Active coach for the title for our current ACC coaches, Mike, shefty, ROY Williams, and Jim boeheim being the others Virginia six team to win. Multiple overtime games of the NC double A tournament in route to winning national title there. The first to do. So since era Zona in nineteen ninety seven. Cavs sixty six and six over the last two seasons. Best win percentage in division. One college basketball live crew restated Seth Greenberg, Jay Williams, and Jay Bilas, the every time in the last three games when things looked grim at the end of the game for junior late made plays. It looked grim at the end of regulation in this one when they were down to and then all of a sudden tied Rome drives, the baseline Texas Tech over helps the Audrey hunter. Who was spectacular? He wasn't good. He was spectacular twenty-seven points nine rebounds that three he hit out of the right corner is the biggest reason that Virginia's able to win the game. That was a spectacular shot. It took advantage of one of the very few defensive mistakes that Texas Tech made throughout the game. And they hung in there, and and grand fashioned to have a chance to win at the end. But Virginia made play after play that end of the overtime. They were great didn't miss a free throw were they were outstanding

UNC vs. Auburn score: Tigers sprint past top-seeded Tar Heels to clinch Elite Eight appearance

"In sports, the university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill apprentice basketball powerhouse takes on Auburn in the Sweet Sixteen matchup tonight. Jason debris of member station. W UNC reports the game will likely feature. Lots of scoring the game sets up like a track meet both the Tigers of Auburn and the tar heels of Chapel Hill love to run and Carolina was the third highest scoring team all year. So don't expect this to be a slow paced game UNC is the region's number one seed while Auburn is the number five, but the Tigers won the southeastern conference championship and are coming off a resounding win over Kansas. But don't tell any of that to UNC head coach, ROY Williams. I don't really say too much of anything about what other people are saying other people are doing what he's trying to corneas. I'll get out we disorder try to get in their own little nest area and stay there knew what we do UNC is a five and a half

"Tournament is allegedly underway. Let us bring a man who will be calling many of the games all the way through the national championship Turner sports analyst and somebody we watched play in high school. You're even old now south lakes high school. Let's start with this. I ask you as an analyst Dookie when you watch Zay on. What do you see? Wow. See explosiveness? I see, you know, see almost like a combination of a linebacker who jumps like Vince Carter. Is really nothing we've ever seen before in terms of his explosiveness athleticism. But also how hard he plays and steals activity has energy just off the charts. We're so used to comparing people you really can't compare them because there's really been nobody quite like him. That's how unique Zion. Williamson is all right grant beyond Duke. You've had a chance to study the brackets who do you like beyond the blue devils? I mean who jumps out to you as a team that could could at least get to the final four not further. While there's a lot of teams, and I know a mouse opposed to say this. But I think North Carolina is really talented trouble for that. I can get in trouble for that. So I if anyone says anything I'll just pretend I'm seeing Smith, but but not North Carolina. Roy Williams has done a fantastic job. I do think UVA they've had a lot of setbacks adversity in the tournament. But I do think this is this is Tony Bennett's most talented team. And I think they'll get through and get to the final four. I think Michigan state. I know they're in the same region as Duke, but I I was at the big ten conference tournament last week. I followed them Tom Izzo. This team is just balanced tough. They defend they can score. They really don't have a weakness at all as a sleeper team. I like Texas Tech the best defensive team in the country. They got a kid Jerry Kover who's probably wanted to top five players in college basketball that nobody knows about he's capable as they are. Taking a long run. And I love Florida state. You know, I love what they've done Leonard Hamilton. They won twelve of thirteen games in the regular season. People forget they got to the ACC conference finals loss to Duke. But they have a lot of death in very talented. So there's teams out there. Other than Duke believe it or not that are capable for long run. I'm gonna ask you to put all your old man hat for second. You and I did this a little bit the other night in Chicago during the big ten turnament. Will you go back to that last year? Even when you lost to Arkansas Scotty Thurman shot sorry to bring this up. You had seen your late and teams teams at three or four all Americans seem to time. And when you're watching now played there, but you're watching now this one and done era are the guys that he good. I mean, you look at them and think, yeah, these guys could have played when we did and won something. That's a good question. I think I think I think there's some really talented players and a lot of young talented players. But you know, the difference was you had older players more experienced players who had the opportunity maybe go pro who didn't think that UNLV team in nineteen ninety blue blue out Duke and Denver in the championship game. And you had Stacy Augmon.

"And you come through a conference where you have three one sees what does that give your team going forward into the tournament? Well, we. Realized that we played a very difficult schedule. I mean, the the number one seeds Virginia we played once gone back. We played once Duke we played three times. And in fact, the last three years we've played nine times in three years. So that's not exactly a picnic. But what we do understand is that we've played a difficult schedule we've played in difficult league. But all that doesn't mean anything unless you play on game day. And I think our kids we have three seniors that are leaders Luke maye Kenny Williams, Cam Johnson, those guys really lead us. And I think they'll push the guys to focus on that one game. I have coming up nex. But for us it has given us a little conference. We played Kentucky. Also, we played Michigan. So you know, we played a bunch of games against those teams that are getting one seats two seats three seeds. So we realize what we're getting into. But every day, and in the NC double A, you better play that day or you go home and tell them all the time. If you start looking down the road, that's where we're going down the road back home runs again on their way to. Columbus. They will take on a Yona Friday night. And then the winner there they will get the winner of Utah state in Washington coach, I so appreciate you doing this. Thank you. Congratulations on another one seed, good luck this week, and we'll talk again soon. Okay, Mike, you guys have a great day now YouTube. Thank you very much. That's ROY Williams the head coach of Carolina. And as he was rattling those off you realize they played everybody. Yeah. I mean Virginia's at once they played them obviously do because at once he they played them three times played Kentucky. They played Michigan zag. They they have played an uninhabitable. Schedule as a former player in as an analyst. Like, what does that too? When you played everybody. You love it. I mean, you wanna play against the best competition. That's what I loved one. We were at UCLA. We would go out. We'd play at Duke or Duke would come to us. We went to Carolina my senior year and found a way to win against the Bill Guttridge coach team, Ben and then go to the carrier dome and play there. Those are the games that matter those out of conference games. How you challenge yourself who you're playing against in conference? You kind of you kind of stuck with whether or not your conference is good that year or down Mike Hopkins team for Washington, they could potentially play this thing around good team back conference. It doesn't mean they can't advance. The I think this Carolina team right now is playing with such great competence. And they're finding themselves and Kobe white has been really good for a majority of this stretch run. I thought he was pretty poor in the final minute and a half of that game against to understanding time and possession settling for the shot that he settled for rather than driving trying to get to the hoop trying to create for his teammates. Forcing that back onto the defense. Step who's a little tiny details. The ROY Williams will continue to talk his team about as they get ready for the tournament. Maybe that sticks within the ACC does have three one seeds. Do you think there's a chance that we see all three of these teams in the final four shooters chance? I mean, they're all wants. So yet the bracket should work out of it holds true that we would see all three. I don't think we're going to. I think we're going to see North Carolina. Maybe get knocked off by Kentucky. I think Tennessee is going to knock off Virginia in that side. And I think we could see actually to SEC teams get into this nationals among those two just to you. That's your group over there. Right. If all this talk about the ACC, ridiculously good. The one thing we didn't talk about with the ACC. This year is the bottom half of this conference was really really bad the SEC..

What North Carolina's sweep of Duke really means

"Bid the ACC game yesterday the Duke North Carolina game. There was an interesting stat. Interesting to me, at least that I gave on Friday with Chris black, and it was that North Carolina had played Duke eight times under ROY Williams in the final game of the regular season with first place in the ACC at stake for North Carolina. Either outright first place or a share now Virginia one yesterday over Louisville. So North Carolina needed a win to get a share a first place in the ACC now in those eight. Times in North Carolina play Duke in the final game of the regular season. Trying to get first place in the ACC tarheels were eight no with games in five zero seven zero eight oh nine eleven twelve sixteen and seventeen. Now, they're nine and go after North Carolina get seventy nine to seventy win over Duke yesterday the blue devils again without Zion. Williamson and Duke struggling shooting from three, and that's why a lot of the experts are not picking Duke to win the NC double A tournament. They were eight of thirty two from three last night. Now, it'll be a little bit different. When I Williamson is back RJ Barrett with twenty six points last night. Cam reddish added twenty three points the tar heels share the ACC regular season title with Virginia's. I mentioned Virginia had a win earlier the evening against Louisville. Cody white, the freshman out of North Carolina. He was all kinds of fun to watch. He had twenty one points Zion. Williamson. Oh did practice while the other day John was out with Waddle and Silvy show on Friday, if you get a chance go back and listen to that the podcast at ESPN, Chicago dot com. You can listen to the podcast of the shows. Zion. Williams had a good practice. Some people thought he might have played last night. But after the game it appeared coach K said Williamson we'll be ready for Thursday's ACC tournament which gets underway. So it's going to be all kinds of fun to watch and see how Virginia North Carolina Duke doing the upcoming ACC

Zion Williamson injury: Duke star reportedly has $8 million loss of value insurance policy

"What's the insurance policy that Zairean Williamson has it Duke? So you can get a loss of value insurance policy which protects you if you fall in the draft, but presenting on, it's basically useless. I Duke Duke buys all the insurance policies to the players. I think that the exception of RJ Barrett who actually he came in with an insurance policy. He got his senior in high school that takes him all the way through his first year. But for the most part of the last five years colleges have been doing these insurance policies an eight million dollar policy for Zion cost you about fifty thousand dollars. It's all it's all above board. It's part of the rules. It's part of getting a player. But again he would start collecting at pick number seventeen. So given what we know of the injury. And even if he injured himself worse, you couldn't imagine that he would ever fall there. So it's there it is protection. But I don't think it will ever be used as an athlete collected on an insurance policy. Yes. FOX Freya Lamu from Oregon. Did there was there's oh who collected more Keithly elected from USC? There's been a couple, but and and that's important for the insurance industry to to know there's been guys who collected on disability, which is like you never play again. But the the more recent product is this offer value where they base the way it works is they basically project where you're going to go you sign the insurance policy, and then they tell you, okay. Like fifteen or twenty picks after that. That's when you that's when the clock starts going the money starts coming in. So it's been collected. The problem is though with Zion. Williamson Duke ensures them for eight million him for eight million dollars. But what's he's really worse? I mean, he's probably worth eighty. Million. So he's he might be worth eight million to to do, but they're really not giving him the the full value. And that's gonna be the next bait. Even though there's only so many Williams, and the other thing is when to and this technicality, but I think it's fun to talk about in DC way. So when Duke pays the insurance policy these insurance policies, if you pay the premium policy, it is tax free you collect your money tax free unless the school pays for it. And then you have to pay taxes on it. So for some of these players if they do have money it's actually worth it for them to pay for the policy instead of the

Tar heels will join Jones Angell answering your questions and making some sense. We hope of what happened on Saturday. Tarheels lose to Louisville eighty three to sixty two. Liam's after the game. We never really got into the game. And I'd like to give you really an answer as to why. But I can't give you their brilliant answer. Two days ago at practice that it was a very mediocre practice. We needed a great one yesterday. And I thought it was very mediocre as well. So that's my job to get them to get prepared better. Couldn't stand prosperity. We have to nice not great. But too nice road wins and come back home. And we didn't have the same type of. I'm a little bit of a loss. But that's okay happens in coaching. We have one for group of kids that we got to prepare better. We've got a head coach is trying but not doing very well. Again, let's congratulate to Louisville to they have the right to play very, well, whether it's at home or on the road, and I thought they played very well today. They're positive play was called us at a great time where we had very negative play eighty three to sixty two on Saturday. The heels lose to unranked Louisville worst home loss ever for the tar heels under ROY Williams. So they are looking to get things back on track. Coming up tomorrow night. "And then you're gonna have let's face it. You're going to play one or two of those other quote unquote games this year. We started the guns we play guns egg at home. And here we go to their place and we've played Arizona like that. We've played Tennessee. We just finished a series, Tennessee. And they're picked to be one or two in the southeast. You can't play every. A game. Like that you have to you have to my mind play some games that your kids can get some confidence from but our league schedule, so good. And as you say, I'm gonna play some of those team, but we've got to drop some of those I'll give this example. And I hope I'm not going to lie when your day when I was a Kansas. We played Georgia. The first game Hugh Derm would guard you write his guys are going to guard. The nice game we play Bob Knight's Indiana team in Indianapolis, they're going to guard you I had two kids on that team that you're that we're first year player for from. When you're a Jew was Juku and one was a freshman. They did not shoot the ball again till January. Okay. Because goats nerve squad coats nice club. They backed off of it. And you say come on baby, aren't you shoot? And they missed the shot. And then the next one gets tighter. And tighter. I couldn't get those guys to be confiscated all until January. So you need some of those games where you guys can get some confidence in what I do is always play a couple of teams in our state to try to give them some money to. And but yeah, you start became. Play every game. Everybody every game. Can't be Duke Notre Dame. Syracuse for Jinya. You gotta have some of those other games too. But last question when I did want to ask you, you know, the experimented with some rules in the last year. I don't know how closely you follow that. But as we were in between cycles on roles is there anything as you look at the game that you say, you know, we need to tweak that we need to fix that. We need to add that. You know, Chris, it's nothing jumps out at me. I will say that we were in Philadelphia practice to seventy Sixers facility before screaming that we had last weekend. They had a four point line. They're just on the practice court thinking, oh my gosh. My gosh shoots one from here. He better make today. But not anything jumps out at me. I'm guy again. And I like what we have. And you know, have kept the same putter for twenty seven years. So I if I get something I like them, we'll keep it. But there's nothing that jumps out of me. I think we made great strides in trying to take some of the fiscality out of the game and make it more free flowing. I wouldn't bother me if we went to fifteen seconds on the shot clock. We you saw practice yesterday. You know? So, but I like what we have. He said the same putter. But I'll tell you what he's got that driver. Droppers not to say. Drivers twenty five models. Well, he could use that putter. Putter for backwards saying arriver knows twenty five drivers enlists twenty. I kept for low the regional. And I kept for long time. That's terrific. Coach. Thank you. Thank you. These square like to thank final four Mike Bray for joining us today, and how about our sponsors hypocrite, you know, if things don't go, well, we can always go to ZipRecruiter. And maybe a little bit more employable. And then how about our listeners they need to go. It's a scribe to the show rate to show give it a great rating. 'cause you know, what it is.

"And that way, it's kind of a way to kind of get around the one and done rule when when you heard the NBA talking like this what kind of impact you think will have on our game. Well, the second part of question what kind of impact it'll have. I have no idea. I think we'll have to wait and see my first thought was my gosh, they're making again rules for their game. And it's what they should do. And the tough thing is we have to react to that. But those rules for them for them. I'm sitting back in and thinking about the practicality of it. Okay. If they say twelve guys. Okay. What about number thirteen, you know, it's like when you were coaching. I'm still coach into and you still looking at you're still involved. We have all these ratings locate you number twenty one or you wanna give me number twenty two. You know, how do you do that? I mean, the practicaly. Not of it is it's going to be interesting. And I don't think we can make in judgment to we see it. There are some kids out there that just would like to take that under twenty five thousand over going to call. That's fine. I really don't have any problem with that. But I do think there's also a factor in there that we don't think about enough is we're setting some of those kids up for failure. Have you got an eighteen year old? It's in some smaller town riding the bus two games with guys in that locker room who are ten years older. You know, how freshmen have guys four years we got guys in near their high trying to hang on G league because I'm may get called up or something like that for ten day, contrary house at eighteen year old going to be in the same world with the guy was ten years older than he is. So the practicality of it. I think who have to wait and see I'm a little skeptical of it. But again, they make rules that they think's good for them. And that's that's what they do the health of this league. How how healthy would you say the ACC is from a basketball perspective right now while? I cannot imagine being anymore healthy or healthier. I guess they either wanna guess is proper English. But I can't imagine them. I was in the ACC as an assistant coach when we had seventeens seven. Now, we have fifteen and fifteen great programs fifteen great universities fifteen great athletic departments. And the league is so so strong and everybody says well the ACC overrated, but nobody wants to play that conference schedule that we have either. So I think the league is in great shape. Twenty games you're going to favor of it. It's I sat in a room when it was going to go from sixty eight team everyone voted against that. Yeah. What is shows how much emphasis influence excuse me that the coaches and this one we didn't even vote all of a sudden, I'm told in July. We're going from eighteen to twenty and it's hard for me. Because by says, okay, we got to be partners. I don't know partners with spring something only like that. But what it does to me personally is? Is the last four years our schedule strength schedule by the term communities being right number one number six six number one. So four years in a row top six and I asked when Goss said you'd rather play the fifteenth team in a C or us play Kentucky. Oh, inventory was much read. See you blink inducted as well. We play twenty games, I'm not gonna play as media's those types game. So I don't think they gain is much myself. But, but it's what it is in these going to send me a schedule, and I'll I'll try to coach the schedule as in me. It's are you gonna play those twenty games the ACC big ten challenge Twenty-one really twenty one and say, he's twenty one exempt to get you to twenty five..

"So we played three yards in went to the final four. And then to think it was but. Tiles? Did it Bobby Frazier? Did it Marcus pays did it halfway? I mean, excuse me, kindle Marshall did halfway through his freshman year more because page did it. So it's hard. They've gotta think the game and still play. You know, everybody says don't think just play. I don't think you can do that. You gotta use your brain. And so we spend a lot of time on the what we feel important things mentally in the game with those freshmen, and it's bigger just for them middle than it is playing, but I do try to put them in a situation where when they play they have the ability to do that. And we give them things that take NBC successful at there's a little bit of a dark cloud over our game. Now, something that we all really love. And appreciate when I say just college basketball FBI investigation. What's the first thing as a lifer guy that is so invested in the game? What's the first thing that goes through your mind when I was so I said, oh my gosh. That's exactly what might say. Oh my gosh. And then you get more information and more information. But Seth I'm one of those guys I think glasses half full. I think the game is in good shape. Do we have problems? Yes. No question. But when the original thing came out, there were four coaches, we have three hundred fifty one division one schools and each one of those schools has four coats. You're talking about fourteen hundred fifteen hundred people if any segment is society had that they'd be thrilled to have that. But ours is such a major focus issue of college athletics. Men's basketball. We don't that percentage. We don't want. What's happened? And it's it's bad. But I do believe that the college game is healthy nineteen o six. I think is when the NCW was formed, and it was foreign because there was some bad things going on in football between university of Chicago university of Illinois. So we've had problems all the time. But that doesn't mean our game is a problem that doesn't mean. It's ready to throw it in the trash can. But they're scary issues or things that we don't want to deal with, but we have to deal with and hopefully some good things will come from this. "In THEO Pinson, they could defend multiple positions. How different is your practice now and your team now just because you lost that much experience? We've got some freshmen who are gifted any. Maybe maybe some ways more gifted than Jolan the'll were. But boy, they don't have the energy everyday the enthusiasm of the experience that you're talking about. Joel berry was a tremendous leader just by his action. I mean, he would get mad if he lost a drill. And so I think we don't have that yet. The young kids are gifted, but they don't have that in for us. We've gotta get Cam Johnson. Kenny Williams, Luke maye to step up and be even more vocal more energetic. More enthusiastic about the leadership part because Joel would say anything in THEO said everything. So we really had something really good there. When you go through your catalog of of the great players, you've coached in your career. I'm curious where where Luke maye fits in with which is the same. When you think about Luke maye? What does he represent not just for your team this year, but historically for you say said many times west Miller, it's a co two UNC greens burn got almost one hundred percent out of his ability got his potential almost as as well as you could ever expect anybody to Seth did it himself. You have guys boy they could have done a little bit more. They could have done a little bit more Luke maze. Almost got there as well. That doesn't mean he can't get better. But my gosh, what he's been able to compass so far you have to feel very good about that. Oh, yeah. But this your senior, I expect more at it. And that's the thing with Luke because he's very bright, very intelligent youngster business school graduates going to be easy for me second semester. He's gotta take piano or. Something. I don't know what it is. But he'll be finished it to middle of the year of. So he's just a that great individual. But every time I think about and I do go back say boy is he getting as much as he can in east coming close to getting as much as he can in here. I am saying I gotta have more out of this year. You've got three freshmen as I watch practice yesterday that kinda just jump out at you. Kobe wide, obviously, the little shop lack those three guys you watch those guys and you say one they're kind of Carolina players, you you look at Kobe and his ability to push his speed and the Sears athleticism. Those three guys are gonna have to step up and play significant minutes. You haven't had to do that really in the last four or five years. How different is it? Getting this young group to up to speed with the schedule you play the expectation yet, you know, go back to Joel berry in THEO Pinson, Justin Jackson their freshman year. We had to get them to come in play. But we haven't had it since then we're freshman had to come in and do this last year freshman head to play in the big spot. But most of the time we only had one of those guys on the court at a time. But these three guys I think they are gifted enough. I think their coach -able enough talented enough. They have enough understanding the game. And the other part is they have to have all this because we're going to play them. And I think that they their ability in their enthusiasm where they've worked requires you to play them too. But you also have to understand their fresh when you're gonna live through some tough times with them. Yeah. I mean, it's you don't particularly to that point guard position. As you go about determining who is most effective for you. What are you looking for out of your point guard so much? I think we ask a point guard probably do more than almost any anything. They call our defense that caller offense. And I very seldom stand up and call the play very seldom stand up and call defense in the point guard does that every. Possession. It's strange because we've had a lot of guys go back to the Donald Jordan net. Kansas John von Kansas. When you're three years started afresh when point guard. "We get in there. And then we try and have power games of the nonleague. You know, that's kind of the philosophy. We stayed with even then we move floor in exchange white the big ten this year. We're going to twenty league games. So. It makes your lake situation to the point where you know, don't break the spirit of your team in the non league because we got twenty league games now. And there's plenty of power. But one thing about our league is there's always going to twenty league games, even more. So there's always power where he have checks to get raised the main win, and, you know, be overboard and be over to be a discussion on selection Sunday. And so it just trying to Fallon, you know, enough. Good nonleague stuff to get you ready, but not getting crazy about it. Because of a weekly playing and then pointy league games coming next year. Next year. The ACC is going to open the season before three night of play which I think is like November five six and seven we are going to pour. The ACC point. There's going to be seven game. We're gonna come out of gate with elite game right out of the gate, and then we ever consumed league date. So obviously training is good because we're launching the ACC at work at August in those factors in it. But we're playing a league game right out of the gate, which was an interesting discussion have years ago when our league meetings with the coach did you like that? Do you not like that? Go ahead. "Shoes in ninth grade. If you really good, you know, what we're going to travel your parents tune event, you know, by the juniors and seniors, you know, basically, their parents that are pimping their own kids to get the best deal. It starts that early. And then on the other side, you got you got to shoe companies the shoe companies pay, you know, I don't know what nothing gets paid by Under Armour. But I know that that the word for Kansas was one hundred ninety one million dollars or something with the divas. They're almost partners the shoe companies. You know, the way things stand right now in this moment of time, they're almost partners. And and as partners, don't you think that? No-one put put a stop size up saying don't help me with that kid just like USA basketball sponsored by by Nike. So they go to these regime camps. They're partnered with Nike too. There there. I agree. It's a really tricky relationship. I eight we were back. We just started deal with Under Armour, and we were actually Cleveland for the regional final fifteen and when my sister. And I and I say well, Maryland horse. I mean, I was trained think you know, under ever. Gonna help it wasn't specifically saying a hundred twenty five thousand dollars, but but me moral support. Now, we're gonna recruit in the grassroots system. You know, we all. So it is a tricky tricky relationship and argue actually, you know, forget the equipment with under armor is is it's an unbelievable number, you know, behind UCLA's. It's by the biggest one out there right now. And and you know, so that does make it difficult. I mean, I know that when shoe company deals were Alexei a payroll companies with certain. They stay with a certain apparel company because the coaches said we can't change because I've got recruited. In this particular want. So we we can't take more money from whatever we gotta stay the course because we back favorite. There's another example of what you're saying so complicated relationship. Hey couples things about your team. I number one I traveled with him. I think censure note, man, what what great news. I think sometimes coaches, you know, we all hear about the bad things. But I'm I'm sitting in the middle. And none of those kids knew me, I'm just sitting there, and they were just freaking awesome, Mike. That's great. I appreciate you re Panetta, you You know. know, whatever reasons I love coach air, Danny at I everybody's got great kids. But I can't really in young man here with expert or paint here. All. Show and their day. I mean, hell they were pick knife. But they stole a show. You know, everybody their personalities. On their way, talk to and here, right? After taking over best all of us. But let let's get you your team luck your bonds Costa lists your Matt Farah lists two guys that were kind of mainstays, and you know, guys that you kinda played through. But you said interesting, but you got some guys that are banged up. Prentice ob-, obviously banged up. You know with some injury issues as freshmen terrific point guard, and he got deejay Harvey where are those guys right now in terms of their recovery and their ability to to be ready to play once season starts. Well, I'm sorry because they're ever Derek about train. Yelled at cost and the senior high school, and and we started right? I mean could start out with the premise. That's happening spare pair. Playmaker. Ball. Hayward maker Harvey's been back a week and has shown L affects the micro fracture things to transit the right way. And he's gonna play a lot of it. So. Guys during the foreign for those guys are two of our four or five best players, but they are back. They're healthy, you know, over kind of set the tone for us, and it's a good place to start because those guys within a rail and had been in and leading. And and then you rotate. You know, a little bit of some unknown guys. They're talented guys that there, and we just have to and, but it's a in our young guys got really skill that, they they're ready to go. They don't we..

Welcoming in a guy from your state, your state a little ways from Indianapolis your state, the one the only nineteen years at Archer date. Does it his own way? He's new thing. He's the Frank Sinatra of the is it does it his way my man, Mike break. Good morning, coach brain how is life. Good more more. Oh my God. Catch. Hey before we get into anything. I was just singing a little Garth Brooks on this. Did you go to the show and Notre Dame stadium? And it was on. I it were. It was snowing. Thirty minutes before the show the stadium was full what I'm thinking. They're not gonna show beta laser show, thirty minutes. There was noted everything and everybody states or the first concert at the stadium and put on a show. Unbelievable. Really cool. I saw a year ago here in bankers life, and I'm not the biggest FAM. I'm right. Holy hell that dude can put a show on. That's what I said the same thing. Listen. But I'm like, okay. I man he's a show is former and so were it was really cool. And I guess we're gonna start there with some more cops or you know, newly renovated stadium because it has so much else. We can do. It's awesome. Sent that's absolutely man. It's so impressive guys renaissance men. We went to that's the. You guys go to concerts? That's how low your level renaissance man and Seth Greenberg world because you go to Garth Brooks, concert them car. She's come on. He'll Billy slim raise the level..

"This is the tip of the iceberg, right in my opinion. And and when I say that I mean like this next trial think about the hours and hours of Tate, and interviews and wiretaps that were not allowed to be played in this trial. I mean, it was salacious conversation between we'll Wade, and you know, some dude I don't even know who guy was regarding an international player. So once though I in less, those those wiretaps and. Up under wraps in aren't exposed. I'm there's more to come. This is the tip of the iceberg. But this is the lowest hanging fruit to send a message to the next two trials to try to basically get guys to sing. Work seven I sat next to. FBI on my flight home from the media date. And he said he said, this is where it begins. This is not the middle. This is surely not the end, and this verdict now sends a message to the defendants in the next two trials to say. All right. You want to go to jail, that's fine. Or do you want to help us and basically save the rest of your life? You know being in Jefferson twenty years. Well, also got any maybe mentioned earlier in the podcast got up code dock ins now they have even a big and I was talking to defense attorney yesterday because I'm trying to get ready for this. And I'm trying to know and he's like, look if the government thinks Gado, code and dock and still has value to them. They will try to get them to flip and cut a deal with you know, they're already convicted. So those three are looking for jail. If they don't think there's value if the government is. Done with them. Then guess what you're facing whatever sentenced to judge puts down, and here's the other thing. And I think most people know this in the state of Indiana, you know, you do a good day for a bad day. So you get ten percents. You can get out and five federal government. You've got eighty five percent of your no matter what you do eighty five percent. So you go ten years you go eight and a half years. Yeah. Indiana, you go ten years ago five so look they're being tried in federal court is totally different. And there is a huge incentive forgotten code and dockets to flip am, but but that's only if the government thinks there's value in them flipping. It's a it's a hell of a deal Seth coming up. You're right. It's a hell of a deal. This is the start. This is just the very beginning. No. It is obviously ringing out all throughout college athletes yesterday. I was at ABC, and it was it was interesting. You know, usually means as a celebration of the season and the start of the season seasons. Been moved up a couple of weeks and people get ready. They've played quote, unquote, secret scrimmages which allowed to talk about after the fact, but not before the fact 'cause they're secret which is a rule in south that owner stand. But they're not secret if their secret, then why are you talking about affects they were secret sick, right? But I have to admit it was you know, with the with the hearing going on. And I was there prior to the verdict. Everyone was on a little bit pins and needles if he had Jim Larranaga there who obviously was involved in the little side of the of the trial, though, he seemed in in pretty good spirits. You had coach K talk about a blip. And then he had to define what a blip was..

"Dockage the definitive college basketball podcast. Welcome courtside with Greenberg dockage talking all things college basketball and life because they ends lifetime experiences are just absolutely mind boggling, but we're going to stick to hoops today. We're going to stick to the verdict in the F B I trial against those three defendants dockings ghetto and Merle code, and then as this drama, and at Solway describe it man is drama unfolded with Merle code Christian Dawkins Jimmy guide and the jury was out one day two days three days the whole atmosphere. Routed almost was like, a a book would read in a summer and a lot of ways, you know, the types of accusations that were being made. But then the verdict came down. What was your first impression when the verdict came down not surprise? I mean, it's ninety four percent conviction rate. Seth. Sad. You know, you don't I don't think anybody that has ever ever done with these guys are doing anticipated going to jail over maybe the NC double A, maybe their own. I don't even think they thought it was illegal or against NCWA rules based on these kids hadn't been there. I I was I was sad for them. Glad for the sport. I guess. I think that college basketball. You get kind of tired of a couple of things you get kinda tired of people saying everybody cheats, and you also get kind of tired of people say I do. Anyway, people say, well, you know, we everybody knew there were rumblings. Everybody knew I didn't know it was going on. I know I if you told me that the assistant coach at Louisville would have met in front of a gas station and giving some kid hundred thousand from schuch, I didn't know I do size kinda sad for those guys. I don't like see people go to jail. But in a way, I'm really happy for the sport. And I'm also anxious to see what happens moving forward who flips who starts talking for the guys get involved. I think it's it's ongoing is also I will say this. And this is something Seth that doesn't matter. But her lot of people in the sports media say, well, this shouldn't have gone to trial. Well, I talked to, you know trial, lawyers, and they're like, whoa, that's fine. People can say that. But the truth of the matter. Is the only matters whether to Jerry things it should have gone to trial jury thought it should have gone to trial. So that over our it's not over. But that's it you don't they convict? And now we see what the fallout is. And follow could be that in the next two trials those. Defendant. We start to line up now. Wait a second. These guys are going to be guilty. I don't want to seven to ten years are right. I'm gonna start to sink and the judge. I think made a strong statement in terms of how he handled the trial because he basically did not make it about the AA made it about the incident. But here here's a couple takes that that I have one please take your head out of the sand of you. Don't think the Hugh companies and universities are partners their partners. You don't pay Kansas one hundred ninety one million dollars. If you're not their partner, and when you're a partner, and let's just use Kansas. An example, you're not paying them one hundred ninety one million dollars for the football team. All right. You're paying one hundred ninety one million dollars for their exposure of the basketball team. Now, look, I'm not condoning anything that transpired. I mean to me. It's absolutely sickening to see what transpired, but these shoe companies, and these universities are partners. They're in it together. Why do you shoe companies have grassroots programs? They have grassroots programs for two reasons. One to identify the next Michael Jordan number two to be a support system and a lot of ways to their universities that they sponsor why does Kansas and this is just my philosophy. I'm not saying strew once Kansas time with Adidas not Nike probably one the amount of money. Number two is there's not eight thousand schools there's very few Adidas schools, so therefore with all the grass roots programs. They almost potentially have the pickett'll litter. Number three is like this. Recruiting process with the companies and players start too early age..
