Former top aide to Maryland governor dead after manhunt
"A former top aide to a Maryland governor is dead after an FBI manhunt. Roy McGrath was at one time the chief of staff for former Maryland governor Larry Hogan. He became the subject of a three week manhunt when the Florida resident failed to show up for trial in Baltimore on corruption charges on March 13th. Attorneys for his family confirmed that McGrath died Monday after a confrontation with FBI agents in a commercial area on the outskirts of Knoxville, Tennessee. An FBI email said McGrath was wounded during an agent involved shooting and taken to a hospital. He resigned in 2020 to 11 weeks into his job for Hogan and pled not guilty to an indictment in 2021. He was accused of lying about the governor's approval for a severance payment of over $230,000, as the head of Maryland's environmental service. In addition to allegedly embezzling roughly a $170,000 in expenses. Hogan said he and his wife were deeply saddened by this tragic situation. I'm Jennifer King

And she said on Friday that the U.S. has been helping them get pieces of that culture back. In fact, they interdicted a shipment of stolen Ukrainian artifacts that were essentially headed from Russia to the U.S.. They stopped that ship and essentially repatriated those artifacts, but it's part of the reason why she said they're not giving up on the fight. "I'm Hillary Howard. Thanks for being with us. There's a warrant out for the arrest of a Maryland man who was once pretty high up in the former Hogan administration. Roy McGrath was supposed to be in a federal courtroom for the start of his trial in Baltimore on fraud charges, but he was a no show. WTO's Kate Ryan joins us live with all the details. Kate, first of all, Roy McGrath's connection to former governor Larry Hogan. Can you talk about that? And what happened today? Yeah, a Roy McGrath is the former chief of staff for governor Larry Hogan that he was in that post only briefly from about June to August, and he resigned and that's 2020. He resigned after reports started leaking out that he had left his previous job with a very hefty severance package equal to a year's salary. And what was that job? It was with the Maryland environmental service, and it sort of a quasi state agency, a nonprofit corporation that's called an independent state agency. Our partners at Maryland matters reported this morning that McGrath was a no show in court this morning and that by 1115 the judge said she would send the jurors home and issued a bench warrant for his arrest. Highly unusual in a federal case like this. Kate go into more detail on what McGrath is accused of doing. Right, the charges have to do with theft wire fraud and falsifying documents all part of what was apparently or is allegedly a scheme that he came up with to get that big fat severance package. Again, that's unprecedented particularly in state government. He had said he is accused of misleading the board of directors there, saying governor Hogan signed off on this. It's okay. You can write me that fat check. A governor Hogan immediately issued a statement at that time saying, no, he didn't have any okay from me. McGrath is actually accused of falsifying a document seeming to show that the governor had the former governor had signed off. Again, Hogan has adamantly maintained throughout. He did no such thing. And as a matter of fact, he's a potential witness for the prosecution. Quickly, Kate even if he's found and brought to Maryland for this federal trial, it really isn't the end of his possible legal trouble. Not at all. He faces a raft of charges in Anna rental county circuit court, including misconduct in office, wiretapping for allegedly recording other government officials without their knowledge, Marilyn to two party state. You can't do that. So even after going through this trial, he faces a lengthy procedure procedure and proceedings in Anna rental county. Right now, the emphasis is on finding him. His attorney did contact WTO and wrote us saying that he's hopeful that he will hear from his client and can not explain why he was not a notion why he was a no show this morning. Behavioral health issues account for about 20% of emergency department visits to Frederick health hospital. That's one out of every 5 visits to the emergency room. Gardner says Frederick county has among the state's highest number of 9-1-1 calls related to behavioral healthcare issues. The new facility will be operated in partnership with a nonprofit mental health association in Frederick, which will also be able to offer round the clock care when the new center opens in 2023. His attorney asked the judge to postpone the trial because federal prosecutors had handed over almost 9000 pages of evidence in recent weeks. The new trial date, we don't know it yet. "WTO P news. 1123 Maryland's governor could be called to testify in a federal court case. The explanation from WTO's Kate Ryan. Federal court documents show that governor Larry Hogan is on the witness list in the case against his former aide Roy McGrath. The case is based on fraud and embezzlement charges against McGrath, who led the Maryland environmental service before he was named as Hogan's chief of staff. McGrath got a severance agreement of more than $233,000 when he left the environmental service and had insisted that governor Hogan okayed the arrangement. McGrath is accused of falsifying documents to boost his claim, governor Hogan has been adamant he did not know about or approved the deal. The news that Hogan's on the witness list in the case was first reported by the daily record, Kate Ryan, WTO P news. And governor Hogan spokesperson Michael Ricci tells WTO in an email that Hogan's office has been actively assisting with the ongoing federal investigation and is confident that the justice system will uphold the public trust. The election to replace a Northern Virginia lawmaker is coming together. It follows the resignation of longtime democratic delegate Mark keem last month. King represented the 35th district which includes Tyson's Vienna done lowering in oakton and this coming Saturday, the fairfax county democratic committee there will welcome voters who will choose their nominee to replace king. Candidates include fairfax county school board member Carl frisch and nonprofit leader Holly siebold, the winner goes on to face a Republican candidate who has not been named yet. Virginia Republican governor Glenn youngkin is facing criticism from Democrats tonight, his political ad maker recently got a 6 figure state contract to produce a state tourism ad featuring the governor. Richmond based pool house made the winning bid for the project and got a $268,000 contract to produce the governor's welcome project ad. The Richmond ties dispatch reports the ad was designed for distribution and display in airports and in tourism welcome centers. It shows popular tourist destinations around the state and includes a welcome and some narration by junkin. The Virginia tourism corporation reached out may 5th to three advertising companies offering them a chance to bid on the project, pool house responded with a bid the same day, a second firm did not respond a third said it could not meet the scope of work. Democratic Party of Virginia chairwoman Susan swecker calls it a scheme to use taxpayer dollars for what is basically a presidential campaign video. That's three times as many as in 2019.
