"Impartial. Your this is a political process is not anything. Judicial about impeachment is a political decision. I am trying to give a pretty clear signal. I made up my mind. Have you made up your mind. Well based on what I know right now I just don't think they made the case. I don't think they came close to making the case. This is called a trial because because there was really in the constitution. I think no better thing to call it. But it's it's it's it's a very political process. Five of the so-called jurors running for the president Not a single Republican in the house convinced that they should vote for either the articles of impeachment and a couple of Democrats Convinced events that they shouldn't vote for the articles of impeachment. So it's it's not a classic iphone to a federal judge one day this week and he said How could you call this really atrocities? The federal judge for a decade or more. We're half of the jurors can overrule what the judge decides. That ought to happen next. It's not a trial in any classic sense. It is a political decision to do it and at the end of the day every single member of the Senate has felt rations. That are pretty obvious. So Oh you don't think that the house made its case but let's talk about some of the one of the basic things now. which is the president asking a foreign country? The leader reformed country to investigate instigate a man who is a political rival of his. Is that a ran well. At the same time you had the attorney general asking leaders of other countries to to help them look into the two thousand sixteen elections whether it's switches the planet which is to benefit the United States. This is a specific ask specifically specifically about his political opponent so do feel that that's appropriate. Well the the president and the Secretary of State and the retired lieutenant general roll. WHO's a foreign policy adviser all feel like that call was within the youth want link? I think I've never been very happy with any of the Ukraine Ukraine decision since the Russians invaded Crimea. We told President Obama in December of two thousand fifteen to provide lethal aid lead. which he never did? I never been happy with the way any of this has been handled regarding Ukraine's and we're trying to to to do what we can be helpful so your colleagues Ben Sasse called it very troubling the call asking for to help dig up dirt on on on on Joe Biden Lamar. Alexander said it was inappropriate marco. Rubio said he shouldn't have done it in the list goes on any other president would have said. I'll have the attorney general. Call you about what some things were looking into. This one didn't. Did you make a mistake. The presence make mistakes. I don't know if this call was a mistake but again I think there are plenty of mistakes have been made by both President President Obama and president trump at regarding Ukraine and how to deal with the Russian aggression in Ukraine. Just like how to deal with the Russian aggression in our elections. So let's talk about potential witnesses in the Senate trial. Some key figures like the former national security adviser. John Bolton haven't testified defied Bolton's lawyer said that Bolton was involved in quote many relevant meetings and conversations that have not yet been discussed in the testimony is thus far far as a juror. Don't you want to hear from him. As a senator in is a person who believes the constitution is there for a purpose I think is the job of the house to make the case. Only a majority of the house can send a case over to the Senate one hundred eighty years. We only dealt we only one time touched the idea of presidential impeachment here now three times in forty. Six years of the Congress has moved through the process impeaching a president. I don't think you WanNa make that so easy that the House that a different party can send over the Vegas set of charges. Expect the Senate then to do the houses job I think they should have gone to court just like the house did with Clinton just like the house did with Nixon it would have taken some time. Hi but that's the they had plenty of time. They've been wanting to impeach the president many of you don't hear from any witnesses. Whoa let's let's let's let them present their case and then see if we need to hear from witnesses? That's the way it was done in two thousand nine hundred ninety nine. I think that's away. We should do it this way. I'm going to ask you about a really interesting article this week. from the editor of Christianity today which is a prominent Evangelical magazine. He called for the president's removal from office. And here's what he wrote. None of the president's positives can balance the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character. Go on to say that he should be removed. We believe is not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the creator of the ten and commandment. So he's saying that he can't reconcile his Christian faith and values kindness generosity integrity with the president's quote immoral actions business relationships with women and habitual string of mischaracterization lies and slanders. And now your Christian faith is important to you. And I'm wondering especially since I think it's almost six ten of your constituents or right White Christians when you read this. Is this something that familiar. Do you wrestle with us. Well I I think that person looking at The president versus what the President's done is president is has got to be an outlier in everything. I hear from the Christian community community. The faith based community generally is very supportive of this president. Because he's been very supportive of them. What the president's done to allow a faith based institutions solutions to get back one of the potential options in adoption? Something I care a lot about what the president's done to try to assert religious freedom all all over the world and struck on personally with the if you look at the president's actions if Roy Blunt looks at the president's actions no president in my lifetime has been aggressive in trying to achieve the goals that faith-based voters have set out than this one has thank you so much much. I really appreciate you coming in this morning to be with you. Thanks thank you and the latest on Democrats impeachment strategy the.

"How the new america carr's dooming the republicans any argues that the party's rejection of a changing america is likely to lead to a spectacular crash in next year's election greenberg writes trump's not party evangelical. GOP can't just be defeated. It must face a repudiating shattering defeat that frees other brands of the republican and conservatism. I'm to breathe again. Find their own republican candidates switch loyalties to the democrats or perhaps vote for an independent presidential candidates team. Welcome back to meet the press and i should remind people when democrats democrats were in the wilderness before nineteen ninety-two you were the message maven that got bill clinton to focus on. It's the economy stupid appreciate at checkout and i appreciate a time when the democrats were worried about working. People and bill clinton got that and probably want a lot of rural america in the process okay so you said you thought four years ago this republican republican coalition that was going too far to the right was going to defeat itself but it didn't right what went well save above all by donald trump didn't run as a republican and the reason i reason i wrote the book was what i think i understood then was you had a tea party. Evangelical trump dominated party that that was at war with a new america that was increasingly diverse immigrant and it was reacting against it and that's the reaction that people failed to notice a reaction amongst republican voters secular conservatives moderate women independence of you know pushed off and so the reaction against it he's run this war on immigrants and what we've noticed with that is that the country is becoming more pro immigration as he wages war and then finally he has waged waged war on government for decade the country's lived through a an attempt to dissolve government make it not be able to solve any problems and that is traded traded a reaction and it plays out in the democratic primaries of people one us government to address problems jonah goldberg. You have been somebody that's been sort of fighting this shifting shifting and the republican party. What do you think of his <hes>. Take well historically when we get arguments like this my first response to think this is an example of the wish being the author of the thought. This may be different because the GOP really does have some severe structural issues going on the loss of the suburban vote. Which in many ways was the real. GOP debase is a long term problem. I do think it's worth thinking about though in an era of such hatred of polarization where a lot of people are democrats simply because they hate republicans and a lot of people are republicans because they hate democrats. If one party dies the other party could lose its reason to live and so our politics ten years could look very different because there are a lot of people democratic party who may leave to find the replacement of whatever comes after the GOP it saying you are. I was just i in fact. I want to animate this discussion with the debate. This is your sort of arguing that electability may not be what people think it is that actually elizabeth warren putting out more plans is actually more responsive than and maybe what joe biden's doing right right yeah <hes> because we're dealing with. I think this transfer shop transformative moment. I mean real big dynamics that are shaping the election and one of them is the nature of the republican party. The second is does attempt to suppress government. The other is this battle against america being immigrant <hes> country but it's produced a consolidated a democratic party that wants to vote for somebody that will bring big change but the but the result afterwards i believe is not a continuation because i think this can't go any further. I think this polarization is going to the point where democrats have grown to be about ten points bigger block of voters that is very consolidated very anti-trump and determined to for him to be defeated and i think they want to have an activist government that addresses a whole range of problems the republican party..

Welcome back to meet the press talk. It's great to be with this morning. Thank you for having me on the show. Thank you for coming on. It's precisely those moments that make you recognize so clearly. She'll know over over fifteen years to actually sit at the table together talk about the path forward in a more peaceful way. I was just going to say it's it's. There's plenty of reporting out there that indicates that the afghan government had indicated they weren't coming coming and that they had pulled out. I is that how the timeline events went. That's false. Okay what. When did you know in this meeting wasn't going to happen. I'm not gonna talk about specifics but we had been working on this meeting for a little while and then <hes> after the death of sergeant first glass bredow and the the the attack by the taliban <hes> with a simple effort to improve their negotiating posture yeah that that that was impressive trump can never stand for and we inform both president ghani and our taliban interlocutors that these meetings were not going to take but mister secretary the taliban have been killing americans throughout these negotiations and some people had criticized the united states for participating in negotiations with the taliban during this why why now why. Why wasn't this a problem before. It's always a problem anytime taliban conduct terror attacks certainly when they injure americans or kill american so it's it's always a problem <hes> you should know in the last ten days. We've killed over a thousand taliban and while this is not a war of attrition. I want the american people to know. The president trump is taking it to the taliban alabama in an effort to make sure that we protect america's interests we will never give up <hes> gentlemen scotty miller's capacity to protect americans. We are doing it now. We were doing it yesterday today. We will continue to do it. <hes> what we have been working on. We we knew the war had continued. You gotta get a deal. You gotta get an arrangement where both sides agree that they're going to stand back and they're going to reduce violence silence. We were we were making real progress towards that. We had a commitment from the taliban to make formal public announcement that they would break with al qaeda something that <hes> an american american demand that had gone back as far as president bush <hes> we we were making progress along the way president trump of supportive of those efforts <hes> but make no mistake chuck <hes> we're not gonna with. And that's what we had kind of suspected it along basically is that this may be a way for Trump in some ways to save face by taking the steel of winning another potentially perilous politically government shutdown and. You know, trying to find other ways of funding border wall aside from just this one piece of congressional legislation. And I guess one of those other ways is the possibility perhaps of a national emergency declaration is that still on the table. It certainly is. And I think that that is something that Republican lawmakers are trying to tap potentially other sources of revenue in order to dissuade Trump from going that route because I think there's a general sense that that would be both politically and legally perilous, but I think that it certainly is still from the White House's perspective appears to be on the table. Yeah. And I guess Republicans. I mean, it almost looks like there's sort of shaking out the couch cushions looking for extra money from other sources, what could those sources be and what's with this twenty three billion dollar figure? The president put out on Twitter. ES? It's clear where the president got this twenty three billion dollar figure from but Republicans in congress people like ROY blunt have been talking about trying to find others tap other revenue sources, for instance, perhaps army corps of engineers money. Another one that's been discussed out. There is is four th money. That's been forfeited by criminals that could be used to redirected for the border wall. So basically as you described it, it does feel a bit like shaking out, the couch cushions and just trying to find whatever money could possibly be tapped through the congressional appropriations process rather than leaving it to Trump to try to take action on his own via, you know, some kind of an emergency declaration. It's interesting that you point out lawmakers talking about army corps of engineers funds again because we'd heard that possibility what a week or two ago, we've heard pretty strong blowback on that from among many others the governor of Puerto Rico. That's right. And you know, certainly it won't. Belong now where in February. But it won't be long now until we're back in the summer and the fall and I'm sorry late summer where we get into hurricane season. And it runs the risk. It's almost a bit ironic in a way that they are talking about taking money from levies, which in in some ways are a wall to keep out natural disasters to build a border wall to keep out people. So you know, there could be some fallout down the road. If there is some kind of, you know, a hurricane or flooding or natural disaster after Republicans tap money for for army corps of engineers projects for what a lot of folks view is kind of a Trump vanity project at this point. Yeah. And when you when you talk about fallout down the road. I mean that raises the specter of the twenty twenty presidential race and the president I mean setting himself up for that. You know in the state of the union address and coming out of this last government shutdown. I mean is this going to continue to be an issue for the next year? Or so I think so I mean, if it's important to keep in mind that this is an issue that the president campaign, very hard on in two thousand sixteen and one that he views as a winning issue politically because I think he's very focused on looking at what energizes base not necessarily on trying to reach out to independence or more middle of the road, even conservative Democrats. I think that Trump has shown that his he sees a path to victory based on his performance in two thousand sixteen that's built around motivating his base. And he sees this as an issue that very much does motivate his base. And so I would expect him to continue through twenty twenty to press this issue and try to once again chart a path to victory that relies heavily on the right flank of of the Republican party. All right. Just a few seconds left. Kate is their time to avert a government shutdown. Get a Bill crafted and all that. Yes is the short answer. Congress tends to move pretty quickly. They dilly dally when they have a lot of time to work with. But when things when push comes to shove and the deadline is buried down on them. They seem to be able to move pretty quickly. So I would imagine unless Trump or someone else throws a monkey wrench last last-minute monkey wrench into this into this deal, which certainly remains possible that congress will go ahead and approve this and move quickly to do that.

"Republican Senator ROY blunt believes that politics in Washington will prevent lawmakers from voting on a permanent attorney general our friends on the other side in the Senate have made it so hard to get anybody confirmed anything and so the presence unlikely I think to make that nomination before the congress reconvenes, and if he did we'd be unlikely to be able to do anything with it. We are way beyond the time when you have a hearing and a week later somebody gets confirmed to these jobs, no matter how insignificant they are in this one. Of course is very significant Senator blunt appearing on ABC's this week on ABC yesterday Democrats in congress claim new acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker is a danger to the Russia collusion. Investigation because Whitaker previously spoke critically about the hunting season is underway across Kansas, Mark. "We act quickly given that we now have the intelligence heads for United States government and now. Unprecedented move all going to the White House and saying that this is happening. Now we have a common set of facts, and that's why as we move forward, I'm glad that we were able to get the three hundred eighty million out to the states. Forty seven states now have their funding for things like backup paper ballots, but we also need to get the secure elections act passed. And that's what my friend, ROY blunt was talking about there. We're going to be voting on that Bill finally in committee, and that's going to allow us to require backup paper ballots of the fourteenth states that either have partial or don't have them at all. Let me get you to respond to something the director of national Dan Coats said about this election ticket. Listen Senator. Today is simply to tell the American people we acknowledged the threat is real. It is continuing and we're doing everything we can to have a legitimate election at the Barrington people can have trust in Senator. I have to say it's at last phrase that sort of sent a little bit of a shiver down my sign where we so that we can have a legitimate election. It wasn't a guarantee yet. How confident are you that the twenty eighteen midterm elections are going to be legitimate. I'm very concerned that you could have a hack that finally went through. You have twenty one states that were hacked into. They didn't find out about it for a year, and that's one of the reasons that we want to pass our Bill so that that there is now a requirement that they tell the individual secretary of state's immediately so they can protect themselves. And I think you also have the fact that you've got the president undermining this on national TV still after his security people general next Sony, they go in front of the world and they say, this is happening. He says that night at a rally in Pennsylvania, that it's a hoax. So that concerns me. But at the same time, there are some very good people working on it. I love to see this broadened out. So we start to discuss also the threats to our power grid system, the threats to our financial system because the Russians aren't just stopping at the election equipment is the president's comments undermining national security when he does that. I think they do because you've got these people that are our security people. Our intelligence people when he stood next Ladimir Putin in front of the world and really sided with him over the intelligence people. It sent that same message to the world. So I wish he would listen to these people, but what we have right now as a common sets of facts between at least Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and a common purpose to protect our democracy..
