Top 5 High-Concept Horror, Bad Hair, The Wolf Of Snow Hollow

"Welcome to film spotting Josh we grew up in the eighties we were blessed with a lot of things including the Golden Age of the high-concept movie but I know there are some people listening who are wondering what this phrase really means. We will certainly defined in more detail as we get into our top five here in a little bit but our producer, Sam has a good thought. If the premise of your movie is right there in the title. That's pretty much dead giveaway that it's a high concept movie snakes on a plane there. You know maybe the platonic ideal of high-concept movie, right? That's it right there. If all you gotta do is tell someone the title and they understand everything the movie is about it's probably using a high concept. Yes. Snakes on a plane maybe at times scary in its own way, not exactly a horror movie a longtime listener on twitter Charles Canzoneri was following a similar line of thinking he said invasion of the body snatchers night of the living dead. The. Those titles kind of say it all too. Don't they Josh Yeah. We'll. We'll kind of get into exactly the way you and I at least defined this, but you could make an argument for those for sure we will get to our picks here in a moment but first we did want to spend a couple of minutes on the movie that inspired the list Justin. Simians new bad hair. So yeah the bad hair of the title here is A. Bloodthirsty, we've that the star, the movie L. Lorraine's Anna She unwittingly submits to as part of plot her attempts really to get ahead at this black entertainment network sort of an MTV style network she works at this is set in nineteen, eighty nine we should say so she's been there awhile she's been overworked underpaid largely ignored and and sees a new look as perhaps a way forward. Now, Simeon directed two thousand fourteen dear white people and he created the TV spinoff to he takes the college set racial identity satire of that earlier film and amps it up here Yes. There are some really gnarly murders to this definitely counts as a horror film. He layers in some observations about assimilation and authenticity in that era late eighties, early nineties. Let's clip. Anna. Does your hair. No. We. Aren't you tired of it. All the stairs you get walk into the army lobby everyone wondering why you're here. If you went to any other floor in the tower for job interview. You wouldn't get past reception. And you know that. Sisters get fired lesson every day. have. Music people have certain expectations and my girls need to flow freely. Wonder. You want to be one of my girls. Yes. that. Is L. Lorraine's Anna with Vanessa Williams as her CEO. Zora Josh you did like Dear White People Justin Simians debut film as you mentioned in fact, nominated for a golden brick here on film spotting back in two thousand fourteen. What did you think of that? Hair I kinda loved it actually Really Yeah it's it's pretty insane and you know not a perfect film by any means in some in some ways an experiment in genre for Simeone, you can tell feeling his way and having some fun with the horror comedy elements here, but you know what? I really wished. Adam. Is that I. I mean obviously nowadays, we wish we can see anything with a full theater, but this thing really would have benefited from a very loud a very lively audience preferably like maybe around midnight something like that I think then you could get into the vibe of the film a bit more easily than say just you know watching it on Hulu at home but I still had fun with it. I think what Simeon does in terms of some of the extreme camera angles and the slow zooms there. That are a little insidious There's a great scene where Anna is at the salon getting. About to get the we've and she's kind of walking through this hallway of hair samples that is probably going to haunt my dreams. I think not only the way it's filmed but remember that old seinfeld bid about like when you find hair and things something about like if it's on our heads everyone, you know it's completely normal everyone loves it. But the minute it's removed from your head everyone freaks out that seeing like totally captured that for me So yeah, I think this works as horror I think the main performance here's pretty strong by lorraine and I think there's a lot of fun comic performances going. On along the edges here from people like Jay Ferrell Lean Awaith James Vanderbeek of all people who really doing a Don Johnson Miami Vice era performance I think the setting the eighty nine setting added a lot for me. Just kind of remembering that I don't know if it's like Yo MTV raps I'm sure there's a different countdown show around then the capture, the vibe of that really. Well, I think here even give us a music video and original music video with Kelly Rowland playing this. Pop Star. Hip, hop star who's kind of a mixture I don't know tell me what you think I was getting like. Janet. Jackson slash. Paula Abdul feel from that music video. So that was fun. There's a lot of fun stuff here. Yeah.

Midnight Moment - Media Grinds my Gears - burst 1

"Hey Patriots Paul Spartan here with your truck tonight moment. It's just after midnight here in the mall High Command Center in the paper the price of.com Studios or Theatres Rowland. Right. So you wanted to do something about the the the blatant stupidity of the media which you know, currently I agree with as well. But what's up? I'm pissed off lately, you know listening to it does just the the the main street bullship of the you know, I mean people like I'll give you an example today, you know, listen to them, but I'm listening to Shaun Hannity. Yeah, listen to him this afternoon. I'm really quite fed up with listening to repetitive bulshit get repetitive nature of every day. They talked about Hillary Clinton Steele dossier rented Comey Clapper by today, He's strong all these people they keep describing the every single day for like the past year or two years. Hm about a dog. It's like I don't be the sort of nasty ugly way, but it's like listen to Joel Osteen. Yeah, give some really cool messages but it always ends up being the same thing. You get the same road. So guys go to give you this God's going to give you a Bountiful Harvest. We're down the road go to prevent all this treasure on the 7-year like that's right. Okay so big way down with Fox News because I was so tired of hearing these people talking about all these different things going on with Adele They Declassified all the stuff of of the of the Hillary Clinton emails and all this stuff. I mean, I'm at the point where it's either a license assholes or wage shut the hell up something else until somebody comes to light that you can bring the stuff back to the Forefront and put these assholes in jail log. This is everybody. I mean, what is that? What's the guy the the US attorney that's been looking into all of it? And he was promising results by the end of summer. And now it's now he's saying that you're not going to get any results until after the first of the year because of all the delays from covid-19. You know, I got a I got to say that that doesn't rub me correct either. Okay, Electro over that code would shit left the station three months ago. How exactly secondly you know, if if your average citizen you were high or being investigated for this we'd received at the maximum at the maximum. We'd receive inbox on the door. And a you know, Mister Spartan Mister burden, we need you to come with us, please and we would be handcuffed and read our rights and taken to a location and questions about who know so treatments months ago. Oh, yeah, so that said my my real question has been these past four months. Why isn't that happening? You know, why isn't why is the weight of why isn't the weight of the federal government being used to you know, what for lack of a better word that to you know, get these folks to talk or at least get them on the rep eliminated statement on the record. So you have something to use and dig and then you can you know, pursue charges after that. I mean, you know, they they Rogers. Yeah, we they get Rodger stone for absolutely nothing, you know ditto General General Flynn. I mean if you look into that fucking debacle, I mean that is just, you know, the man the man confessed so that his son wouldn't go to jail under some sort of obscure, you know some sort of obscure Panthers. And and tell me what father wouldn't go. Okay, I'll fall on the sword for my scheduler. Here you go. You know, I mean that's that's ludicrous but somehow we have all this concrete evidence floating around your standard person would would be back in cuffs and and in a Cell for but somehow the Washington Elite is just that just you know isn't going to work. I mean that's that's what people talk about when they're talking about a two-tier justice system and I think it pisses all of us off regardless of wage. So who's in the Oval Office and truth be told it's been this way for decades. This is not this is not something that started in 2016. I mean what what are your thoughts on that? It's probably the story took place during the McCarthy era back of the fifties. I had to be. Yeah. Yeah, that would shock me at all. You know. I am kind of getting a little bit more caught about Eugene McCarthy and it kind of went all that entail, but I just got really fed up with hearing Hannity and Limbaugh. and how to be the media to be has just become really the only people raved I'm kind of going on a chance to hear but sure but right now the only legitimate news sources that I really pay attention to is what American News Network Boeing edit that what's his name the Oklahoma State coach for on home of the T-shirt to Boggle up. Let's see Newsmax and plate Louis Park. I see Luke router to pull The Hodgetwins. Yeah, David Webb, you know the usual suspects Rush Limbaugh. Sure Mark Ross Park Levin regards like a Tucker Carlson, but after that well, maybe Laura Ingraham, but Doug with the really I'm done with Fox knows they're becoming more but I mean ever since Chris warmer. Sorry Chris Wallace, you know, it's Deborah dead dead father's me kill the moderators of these debates. How did get these assholes off? There's there's evidently a federal debate commission that actually actually they choose from a pool of them from what I understand, but that's that is how do these people that they choose in anyway come off as moderator from you know, I mean, let's put it this way and to our listeners out there regardless of what side of the of the the Spectrum you sit on nobody likes to see a nobody likes to see where the referees are biased. Nobody likes that all right. So, you know, you do need to have some sort of at least in partiality and fair treatment and I think I think if there's to all of our sports fans out there suck. We can all agree that we would also rather see a game called fairly even with you know mistakes. Okay, then have a complete and total bias. Okay by the officiating crew. So that said how the hell does a never Trumper like Wallace Wallace is a republican from what I you know, from what I gather but that said he's definitely a never Trumper. So he's definitely got a got an anti presidential an anti-protest bias. Okay, and you know, the funny part to me is Rush Limbaugh said years ago that the the intellectual Elite is that are quote unquote running the media number one. They're not intellectual number one number two, they're not elitist their leftist. They confuse intellectual elitism with political ideology. That was number one. Number two. They are only talking to themselves. In order to get Awards and get noticed by their peers. They give they don't give two shits about the actual audience or John Q or Jane Q public. Okay, and that's become completely evidence. I mean Wallace jumps all over the POTUS to to to where was it decry or disavow white racism or white box. Or superiority or whatever. The man has done it twenty two times in the last three years twenty two times in the last year's Wallace is oblivious to this why he's working at industry and he doesn't know this. You know, I mean, I'm down to see Joe Rogan officiate this and and wait for Joe Biden to go one of his, you know, the same come on man and Joe to look him straight in the face and go know I'm I don't know you're going to have to articulate. Please continue to you know, I mean there shouldn't be rules of a time limit in a debate not not a Choice Dental to be like 5 minutes to a question answer the question go to answer two-thirds of the way down to go. Oh, wait a minute about a time off. Well debate is debate debate as much like a but much like a live chess match. Okay, and you know, like like me a cryptic talk about on our last podcast and we reviewed that show by by the news that conflation tactic to tell blatant untruths and conflated multiple issues and Thursday. That within this time frame but but the rebuttal required longer than two minutes to let a bag of snakes that he threw out on the floor straight because none of it was true, but it's but that's a debate tactic and not used it to his benefit. Unfortunately. What we were talking about was we think that POTUS either didn't prepare correctly or didn't he thought that thought that Biden wouldn't be as much of a threat as he was I don't think that's a mistake he's going to make again, but that I I completely digressed but to go back to your point. Yeah, you either have blatant hatred and lies on one side or just complete a bulb and naivete on the other and you're right. It's getting old. It's getting it's getting stale The Narrative is you know is we're stuck in a stagnant pattern from 2017m. Exactly and it's it's I'm done. I mean, it's like can we please move on to Joe Biden being an absolute the food home? Talking about stuff about these poor these girls. I guess it did some kind of a little dancer some kind of little routine for out of that was yesterday and talking about I want to see these four girls dance like this for years from now. I'm like, oh my god. Wow, dude. Well people that need this. Oh, yeah, he just and he just said something like the reason he was able to stay in his life. So long was cut because some black women stock the shelves. I'm like, holy it's you know, nobody people should go to vote for this asshole. Yes. That's the other point right? There is that, you know, people sent their they beat up on politics. I understand that Elliot Omar Kazi. Oh Cortez Chuck Schumer Pelosi, Mexico has all these buffoons after continually doing and say dumb things, but it's not all their fault. You got to look at them. Orders and go argue that effing idiot. Well more importantly look into this crap. Well more and more importantly to your point. How does anybody see that and go? Oh, yeah, I'll vote for that. Is that coming? Brother? See people Boise driving down the road where to face masks? Oh, yeah. Yep. There's a Democrat write their own nuts. That's who these people are. Yeah, that was one of the jokes that we put up on the page on the page was, you know, if you're going to vote you don't have to have a biting bumper sticker If you're driving alone in your car with a mask on we know off we know. So it's just ridiculous and out here. It's you know, like a what I like to listen to, you know, what up in the early morning or early evening shows like after Rush Limbaugh. After Rush Limbaugh, but after work slip by usually looking to this is named at Birth guys. He's pretty cool. He's a good choice servative functional guy, right? You know, he's what I do. Let's do a set of Hannity cuz we're out of here down in his defense. I do kind of like him but you're right is his narrative is getting a little old. I mean, I think that he needs to understand. Okay, dude and get it. You know, you know, we know birth We know. All right, let's let's take a break here. We'll come back with our next segment midnight Patriot Nation Spartan here with a Shameless plug for our new gear shop Thursday. Will be I mean, you know the other day I was gone off basement. What about about six weeks? I saw on Facebook and the reason why we're on Facebook so long is because I'm so sick and tired of reading all the the falsehoods in stupidity about President Trump. Oh, yeah. I also heard about as ugly just I'm just updated. So I left and now Cutler blessed know when I go back into Facebook and I see all the stuff. I just go hide I post I just I don't even read them. I just I know who they're from. I know what they're going to say. Don't you read them? I'd post it makes me feel a whole lot less stress. I know I agree that crap. You know, it's like I don't it's too late is always it was never too late to change because my Pi's already been paid up and it didn't meet up for the last photo albums for years now. Well those of us those of us that have you know, those of us that have the benefit of age and I don't mean to say any of us are old even though we are dead. Yeah, we remember I wouldn't even think of voting for 16. That was no fucking way. I was voted for Hillary Clinton cuz I remember what a nightmare she was during the Clinton Administration. You know, I know what kind of asshole Joe Biden is cuz she like I said, I remember him from the Clinton Administration writing the crime bill, you know, the single piece of legislation incarcerated more people of color than any other single legislation dead, but I digress I remember that he did that, you know in the funny part is his running mate was more than happy to lock up people of color from marijuana violations while she was sitting back getting stoned at home the same night that she put guys away for it, which is over here sucking, you know, brownie squares real chicken Willie Brown's Road willing I beat yeah. There you go. She owns a Blue Dress suggestions a blue dress of her own those of us that are older in the audience will get that to all right. So let's get Willie. All right guys, so that's going to suck. But this episode of the midnight moment. This has been Spartan and Burton and we will catch you next time. Remember the Constitution is not just a suggestion trip. Well, everybody else. Have a good one.

Breaking Down Beyonce's 'Black is King'

"In my life is talking about this. Beyonce's film that dropped on Disney Plus and so yesterday, Okay, I need to watch this. I must watch it. It's very similar to lemonade. It's a visual album, and I didn't realize this and I probably should have connected the dots before, but she was so inspired by being in line King. That there's lying King in Black is king. So you hear Simba like Morphosis talking in the beginning, and I'm like, Why is move faster here and then Nala And then later on, she's talking about the Matanza. And there's Timonen Put Mamba and so first that was like, Oh, okay, I get it. Now I get why it's wanted us to be plus so going into it. Had you done much reading on it, or you kind of just went in and then maybe checked on some stuff afterward. Sounds like Yeah, I checked on stuff afterward. That's generally what I like to do just to kind of make sure you know, kind of get a Clean slate while I'm watching it going, okay? This is how I feel about it versus you know, being tainted by somehow lately I'm the same way use. Yeah. The only thing that I heard before my brother had watched it before me, and he just said you must watch it. And so there you go. That's all I heard. But so compared tto lemonade. What was the experience like? It was similar in the sense that there are a lot of Visually. It's stunning, absolutely gorgeous. I mean, you just think about just her accessories and fashion how many racks they needed Because every scene she had a few different outfits that she wore huge outfits of tulle and Metallic puffy sleeves and lace. And just just imagining that alone is Lau and then I also wonder if her mom designs a lot of her clothing. How involved Tina? Her mom, you know was in the process, so just that alone. Stunning and the story itself. She kind of expands on the Lion King story. But there there were a couple moments now, First of all, Let me just say this, too. I love Beyonce. So I'm looking at it through those colored that vision, you know, because I know that she is gets a lot of pushback for you know, trying to be too perfect and I do feel like it must be exhausting to be Beyonce because she she always looks amazing. She always looks amazing. You know, that's what we expect from her. We expect it to be like just perfect pristine and she did deliver that. You know, so At the same time, you know, I do see that At one point, I was watching it on hills like, Oh, there she goes again, You know, like she's looking absolutely gorgeous. And you know, it's really Beyonce focused, and it really starts that way so she isn't and it's available. On Disney, so you can watch me. Plus? Yes. Yep. You can watch the whole thing. It's It's almost two hours. I want to say, Oh, wow. It's Yeah. Oh, Is there an album that you can video like, 10 minutes? Oh, no, no, it's a whole film. No, it's like a whole movie experience. Yep. Come and they're in with. There's a short song that she does with her husband be Jay Z. Forell is in it at one point to the one of the songs that kind kind of teared up a little because it felt so empowering. She's like a mood and it just Her daughters are in it as well and and her son, her kids, You can see them, Shell says. A song with Naomi Campbell and Lupita and Young Go and Kelly Rowland, and they're looking at each other. Just like you're so beautiful and, you know, felt like good sisterhood. And they all telling Beyonce she looks beautiful or each other. They're telling each other Okay. Build a little awkward to be like. Oh, well, I would like you to tell me how beautiful I am. You do feel that sense, though, because even when they're doing like group dances They're the dancers are all in one color. And then Beyonce's in a different shade of the same color or something completely different. Like a contrast as if that's what you're looking at. Yeah, you're just looking at Beyonce dancing, you know, so I mean, and the hair extensions alone. I can't even imagine there's one where she's on like a Uh, you know what the painters like some scaffolding and The hair is just Like two stories. It's super long

This news comes just one day after it was revealed Tom Birger on Erin Andrews are leaving, so the show can head in a new creative direction. What do you guys think? Is tyrod thick? Love it I mean. Do you remember the storytelling on America's next top model? The you remember tire being extra extra on top of extra on. I think the TYRA banks, not only as a host will should be good, but as a producer. She has a Rolodex that has spanned it over thirty years in the business. She can get some real names in here. You WanNa see ya shields on that floor. You Wanna go ahead and see Cindy Crawford like she can call those people up. Brilliant leading lady, she's a very in-command. To to change this show a little bit. They need that little bit of spice on the side. Right so Tara. Who Do you think it would be a good house or that? Someone extra? Coming weeks than anybody. She will. He doesn't think that she'll. She'll work with anyone or have a co host. I. Don't think she would I think I. Think for her Sheep Command so much money and she doesn't need a coast. She's extra alone and she can handle it, but she has to have one Naomi Campbell because she disagreed with her. Okay all right, the guy that'll be hated, but I think my favorite dancer of all time as Lindsay Lohan in Las Club, so I think having tire eighty percent of the time Lindsay, twenty percent of the time and we've got. We've got a brilliant.

What Was the Tulsa Race Massacre?

"In Tulsa Oklahoma, a group of scientists and historians is on the verge of unearthing chunk of the city's past that has long been buried and one. Some people may prefer to keep that way. It's a potential mass grave from worst single incident of interracial violence in American history. Beginning may thirty first in nineteen twenty one thousands of armed white. Tulsen's invaded black section of the booming oil town, terrorizing its residence looting, their homes and businesses and burning to the ground, some thirty five square blocks of the city. Before the rampage was over more than ten thousand black people were left homeless, and more than six thousand were turned in camps where they'd stay in some cases for months. We spoke with Scott, Ellsworth, a native Tulsa and a professor of African American history at the University of Michigan. Ellsworth is the author of the Nineteen Eighty two book death in a Promised Land, one of the first books to take a comprehensive historical look at the Tulsa race massacre previously mystically called the Tulsa race riot of nineteen twenty one. He said to this day. We don't know how many died. Reasonable estimates range from I would say forty to his high as three hundred. When the unmarked suspected mass grave and a Tulsa cemetery is excavated in July of two thousand twenty. It may provide a few answers to exactly what happened over those two days and nineteen twenty one. It will be for many a literal. Reopening of a wound festered within the city for nearly a century. The Tulsa massacre of nineteen twenty one did not a word often used to describe such events erupt. The city simply reached. What now seems an inevitable breaking point? In early nineteen, twenty one tulsa was awash cash from the oil boom. The good fortune reached into the north section of the city, mostly populated by black Americans. That later to be known as the Black Wall Street contained one hundred ninety one businesses, including hotels feed store, a roller rink cleaners, mom and pop stores and restaurants plus offices for doctors, dentists and lawyers. The area had at least five churches to a library movie theater and a hospital. Like the rest of the city at that time, the black area also known as Greenwood had its problems alcohol, even under prohibition was readily available. Illegal drugs were easy to find to. As we're gambling and prostitution the whole city, not just greenwood struggled with crime end with lawless punishment less than a year before a white teenager, accused of murder, was taken from jail cell and lynched by a white mob. The police did little to protect him. And Racial Violence against black people was commonplace, even though thousands of black Americans had just returned from fighting in World War. One Jim Crow Laws and pervasive racist attitudes meant that equality remained nothing more than a dream for black Americans and many white Americans. Wanted to keep it that way. Ellsworth route and in two thousand one report commissioned by the State of Oklahoma on then called riot that quote during the weeks and months leading up to the riot, there were more than a few white Tulsen's who only feared. The color line was in danger of being slowly erased a believed that this was already happening. So into that explosive milieu, a black teenaged boy, working as a shoeshiner, had a brief run in with a white teenage girl operating elevator. and. The fuse was lit. The boy was taken into custody. A group of more than two thousand angry white people, some intent on lynching him, possibly prompted by an inflammatory editorial in a white run newspaper gathered on the courthouse steps some armed black war, veterans and others squared off with them there and soon shots were fired. White people from all over the city began their march on the green. What area to tamp down? What many white people saw as an uprising? Their stories of black citizens being murdered in their homes interrupted in their evening prayers. The terror went on for eighteen hours into June first. Despite their sworn duty to serve and protect neither Tulsa police, nor any other government agency assisted the black population. Instead Tulsa police officers helped set some buyers, an all white unit of the National Guard joined the invaders. Other. Public officials provided guns and AMMO two white men. The KKK got involved a semi functioning machine gun was on black. Tulsen's and some reports indicate the airplanes dropped homemade fire starters. Despite being largely outnumbered black Tulsen's fought to protect their homes and businesses and most of all. Greenwood. But in the end, scores of black people and some white people were killed in. Greenwood was left in ruins. The exact numbers of injured and dead. Even after what's to be uncovered in three suspected mass graves may never be known. It's still unclear exactly what happened between the Black Shoeshine Boy Dick Rowland and the white. Elevator Goal Sarah page to spark the massacre. Though one thing is known. She refused to bring charges. Roland was vindicated. For years. Tulsa refused to acknowledge in any meaningful way. What had happened in nineteen twenty one. Nobody has ever been charged or prosecuted for the crimes that occurred during those eighteen or so hours, even those who grew up there ellsworth included were not taught that part of the city's history. The Tulsa race massacre became a terrible and closely held secret. That began to change with Ellsworth's defeated promised land, and some earlier work, then in nineteen ninety-five, when members of the national media descended on Oklahoma City after the bombing of the federal building, they were informed of this other more terrible episode of domestic terrorism in the state's history. More news accounts and more books of the massacre followed and twenty nineteen, the HBO Comic Book Superhero Series Watchmen inspired in part by Tulsa, enlightened many to the story. But pulses failed efforts to come to grips with its deadly past has left scars. Ellsworth said city was robbed of its honesty. You have entire generations growing up in Tulsa who've never heard of this your people growing up with a false reality, a false vision of the land they were on I mean imagine if today right now that you had young people growing up in Manhattan, who had never heard of nine eleven, but there were no books to talk about nine eleven that it's as if it didn't exist. The race massacre was a gigantic myth in the history of Tulsa it was deliberately buried for a long time. With the honor thing of one of at least three suspected mass graves and Tulsa next month will mark another step in the long road to understanding and perhaps one day recovery.

THERE IS A SOLUTION

"Welcome back my friends to the big book podcast. My name is Howard. And I'm an alcoholic sober since January nineteen eighty eight one day at a time. In this the Thirty Eighth Episode Chapter Two there is a solution from the second edition of alcoholics anonymous originally published in nineteen fifty, five. There were only a handful of edits to this chapter from the first edition, but one of them is most significant as it referred to a celebrated physician who treated the American businessman Roland H. The second edition named that Docker as the world famous psychoanalyst Dr Carl Young. WHO PRESCRIBED FOR ROLAND? In Zurich, in the Early Nineteen Thirties? As recounted on page twenty, six of the second edition Dr Young told Roland H that his alcoholism was incurable by psychoanalysis, and that the only thing that might help was a spiritual experience. That suggestion along with membership in the Oxford Group lifted rowlands compulsion to drink, and later helped him bring abby t to sobriety. EBI INTERN HELP SOBER UP. Bill Wilson Co founder of a in a nineteen sixty one letter of gratitude to Dr Young Bill acknowledged that Rowland's conversation with Dr Young was the first link in the chain of events that led to the founding of alcoholics anonymous. And Now? From the second edition of the book chapter, Two, there is a solution. We of alcoholics anonymous, no thousands of men and women who were once just as hopeless as bill. Nearly all have recovered. They have solved the drink problem. We are average Americans. All sections of this country and many of its occupations are represented as well as many political, economic, social and religious backgrounds. We are. Who Normally would not mix? But there exists among us a fellowship, a friendliness and an understanding, which is indescribably wonderful. We are like the passengers of a great line. Her the moment after rescued from shipwreck, when Camaraderie Joyous nece and democracy pervade the vessel from steerage to captain's table, unlike the feelings of the ship's passengers, however, our joy in escape from disaster does not subside as we go our individual ways. But feeling of having shared in a common peril is one element in the powerful cement which binds us. But that in itself would never have held us together as we are now joined. The tremendous fact for every one of us is that we discovered a common solution. We have a way out on which we can absolutely agree, and upon which we can join in brotherly and harmonious action. This is the great news. This book carries to those who suffer alcoholism. And illness of this sort, and we have come to believe it. An illness involves those about us in a way, no other human sickness can. If a person has cancer. All are sorry for him, and no one is angry or hurt. But not so with the alcoholic illness for with it there goes annihilation of all the things worthwhile in life it engulfs all whose lives touched the sufferers. It brings misunderstanding fierce resentment, financial insecurity, disgusted friends and employers warped lives a blameless children, sad wives and parents. Anyone can increase the list. We hope this volume will inform and comfort those who are or who may be affected. They are many. Highly. Competent psychiatrists who have dealt with US found it sometimes impossible to persuade an alcoholic to discuss his situation without reserve, strangely enough wives, parents and intimate friends usually find us even more unapproachable, then do the psychiatrist and the doctor, but the X. problem drinker who has found the solution who is properly armed with facts about himself can generally win the entire competence of another alcoholic in a few hours. Until such an understanding is reached, little or nothing can be accomplished. Until such an understanding is reached, little or nothing can be accomplished. That, the man who is making the approach has had the same difficulty that he obviously knows what he is talking about that. His whole deportment shouts at the new prospect that he is a man with a real answer that he has no attitude of holier than thou nothing, whatever except the sincere desire to be helpful, there are no fees to pay no axes to grind no people to please no lectures to be endured. These are the conditions. We found most effective. After such an approach many take up their beds and walk again.

Coronavirus patients treated with malaria drug hydroxychloroquine touted by Trump are MORE likely to die, new trial finds

"We still need more research on which drugs are the most effective in treating cove in nineteen a recent study looking at records from the V. eight shows that there is no overall benefit from using hydroxy Cllr Quinn it was actually two more deaths in patients that were treated with it alone then in combination with the antibiotic azithromycin for more on what how Joxer Cllr Quinn might not be the most effective treatment for corona virus will speak to Chris Rowland business of health care reporter at The Washington Post so this is a study that basically bolsters the deep uncertainty there is around use of hydroxy Cork win and in combination with as it's from my son as well antibiotic in terms of both efficacy and safety there's only been a some very small studies and this is actually one of the first that had a fairly large number of patients and what they did was they the A. and academic researchers at the university of Virginia and the university of South Carolina took a look at patient records looking back so it's called a retrospective study and they look at the records of patients at the VA who had been treated for corona virus and they selected out a bunch that had been treated with hydrochloric when a bunch that have been treated with the combination of Hydroxycut o'quinn enters it from my sin and then the third arm was patients who received neither of those drugs and what they found was that and the hydroxy clerk when alone arm there was like around a twenty seven or twenty eight percent death rate of coronavirus patients compared to the ones that had none of the drug and their death rate was around eleven percent so the death rate was higher for the hydroxy Cork when treated group they also found that when it came to ventilation there was really no meaningful difference between the arms so this antimalarial did basically nothing in terms of keeping people off and layers is someone disappointing I mean this drugs have been used widely and again no one knows whether they're safe and effective in here we have evidence that they're not and it's tough we're speeding through the process on a lot of different levels here because the pandemic hit so hard and so quick so that's why the president had been touting it and say Hey people are having some success with it go for it but we didn't have the studies done to really tell us what was going on that's why Dr Anthony Fauci from the task force said I can't endorse that thing just yet one interesting part of this study they look at all males which is we've heard of that cove in nineteen hits males particularly hard I don't know if there was anything to that is just all the people that were in this were male this is not peer reviewed it's not a randomized placebo controlled clinical trials so it's a little different from a full full on study it's kind of a quick and dirty way to try to scoop up some data and see what the effects are is you just go into the computer systems at your disposal on an anonymous basis a bunch of patient records the reason it was small man by the way since VA where I guess the VA population in general is mostly male there were a small number of women in their first pass and they just left all the women out because it was so small and so it indeed it's not compared to a placebo which is like a dummy drug which is really the gold standard of trying to figure out whether a drug works because say you can compare again in this one you don't know any any of these arms exactly how many of those patients would have gotten better weather without the drugs so it's very difficult it makes the comparison pretty murky but again it shows that the reason these drugs have been used is because there is no treatment approved for corona virus these drugs are on the market for malaria and also for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and they were readily available so people just started trying them based on some belief that their entire inflammatory effects would have benefit yeah and it's turning out that they may not want to talk a little bit more about hydroxy clerk as you mentioned earlier I mean all this points to just the uncertainty of this this study cautioned that we shouldn't be using this so widespread until we know more about it but there are some known side effects or using hydroxy clerk when some cardiac death there was a French study a Brazilian study that both had problems with patients developing heart problems and I guess there's something called QT prolongation which kind of affects the timing of the hearts of these are some of the things that have been popping up with the use of this the side effects of Hydroxycut work when are well known and alarmingly as it from my sandwiches the antibiotic that's been using combination also has the same side effect of extending the period between your heart recharging and if your heart is re charging more than half a second it takes more than half a second to recharge time before beats you're in a position where you could have a dangerous arisen mia which could lead to sudden cardiac death it's a very serious obviously dangerous side effect that pops up in about one percent of patients who take this drug and manageable when you're dealing with a small number of patients who take it but when potentially hundreds of thousands of people are starting to take it or a million then you're gonna have you know as many as ten thousand people suffering serious cardiac events and possibly dying and that's why you know the president came under a fair amount of criticism for pushing these drugs so aggressively when there is this clear side effect and efficacy is really unknown against corona

An Interview with Jockey Daniel Centeno

"He's won nearly twenty nine hundred races here in the United States and nearly nine hundred more in his native Venezuela. Many of those wins have come Tampa Bay downs. Where Jockey Daniel? Centennial was in search of his seventh riding title even earned his first ride in a triple crown race. The preakness where we finished eleventh on it always mining all jockeys have obstacles to overcome. That's obviously the nature of the business. But one year ago Daniel Centennial had an even tougher burden to bear in January of two thousand. Nineteen centennial's longtime partner Ashley. George died after a nearly lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis roses. She left behind their daughter. Jasmine who's now in seventh grade. It's tough enough being a single dad and oh by the way Santana also has a twenty year old son son in college but it's pretty tough to work from home when you do what he does. So let's find out how he makes it all work as we welcome for the first time here to win the gate jockey. Daniel Centeno already. A handful of wins for you at the Tampa Bay. Meet a place where you've had quite a bit of success over the years more so than in Maryland where you ridden over the summer. What's been the key to your success in Tampa I dunno being here for light Fifteen sixteen years now for my first time and I I talk like it. I love the weather. I'm never been relieved. Grind with the cold weather. I never try to stay up on the winning thing and I did year by year. You know writing better courses that train and I got to my support here at the beginning from gaming as Kathy O'CONNELL and ride them for their like. WHO So? Maybe you know. Open a lot of a lot more awesome around the track and you know all my area that had been working for Greg to you split you. Year between Laurel Park in Maryland and Tampa. But now I know we're not going to see you what aqueduct in the winter based on what you just said but what made you choose those tracks supposed to say New York or California well because People that are right in for here in Tampa wants to go to Laurel Delaware and the year see bars. So that's like my shadow. God Nora Bill and it's pretty time so I'm really basically driving them. Everywhere are but We're doing good and a lot of oxygen around jockeys are said to have particular writing styles go for example Paco. Lopez takes horses away from the gate aggressively. Everybody knows that likes to go to the early lead. Pat Day was known as wait all day coming from behind. Nine Calvin Burrell is Calvin Bo Rail. You know where he's taking is horses. What do you consider to be your style? Well I I would say eighty two. I like to be more delay but You know it depends on what kind of house I've gone awry but I would like to be close to my thousand dollars outbreak throats to the Leo to pay Being the lead. But it's a defendant to pry. Sometimes you gotTa Jenny a little bit your style to fit all on the horses you know and then workout good too but I'm I feel more comfortable. Really close to the lay or something. That'd be proponent department of your nearly two thousand nine hundred career wins. You've won five grade three races in your career and a single grade to aboard ring weekend in the two thousand fourteen Tampa Bay Derby. You weren't a ride in the preakness as well in two thousand nineteen. What do those kinds of races mean to you? They they mean a lot for me. You know because I can help your mom. I Don t still down so I'd be doing building my curry of keying in this country like little by little step-by-step working hard right in the for different track The Great State for me the main a lot for me you know like I were so hot. And it's like a bay off for my work and I'm never give up and try you know especially luckier when I wrote a pregnant of like a drink of through. You know the the big horse and it would broaden your really good him. Kelly Rowland the ordinary. They give me the opportunity right. Trading is what so I drink too for me. Yeah Yeah Yeah keep telling me from the beginning to doing doing okay. But in the meantime wanting her lungs would getting worse and worse than that was boring. They're are there only chantey how they would've transplant. And the medical cameras are not that both longtime plans doing quake and one day. Keep them back home for Halloween. And she that stroke and she was to call my mom to wake like Lamb and never for memory to talk in everything but no memory and keep going. I asked me and see what's in the two years and and doctors say to her body was rejecting everything again and then get get Her body stop working. Did you say she was in a hospital for two years. was that kind of in and out or was she in a hospital all the time time for two years to two years. Coastal Towns Worry About Storm Surges Damaging Tourist Sites

"New Hampshire is postcard perfect New England a compact city red brick and cobblestones built for good reason on a river's edge the settlers. There's who came here had to settle on the coast water for transportation. They needed water for food. Source and so the oldest parts of our country are right on the water for Rodney Rowland. Managing water is now a priority. He's in charge of maintaining the three dozen historic homes that make up Strawberry Bank Museum. How all this pass Rodney Sheppard. Just go Ho seventeen ninety five. This two hundred year old house has withstood. Two centuries of storms but in the last decade tides from the river just across the street have reached unprecedented levels fool. It's very water now. Routinely floods the basement asessment. We've measured from sixteen inches of saltwater in this basement during periods of astronomical high tide to twenty six inches of salt water in the space during a nor'easter that salt water has eaten away at mortar around the chimney bases and rotted the wood beams that support the House that rotten eventually means what for the house tale full down one of the timbers supporting the first floor of let go due to rot and the entire floor dropped a couple of inches. The region's history is on the line. But so is it's bottom line more than one hundred thousand people. A YEAR VISIT STRAWBERRY Bank museum saving. It is key to saving the region's tourism economy. Portsmouth Smith. New Hampshire is not alone. Coastal communities nationwide are grappling with the impact of increasingly heavy and frequent storms. And it's not it just old buildings that are threatened. Rising seas are also destroying less obvious pieces of history or here at the mouth the Allston river where it enters the grape. If you look that way you're headed straight to Portsmouth down. Megan Howie a University of New Hampshire. Anthropological archaeologist is leading me through the woods. Do the sight of her latest dig the remnants of a house built by the British in the sixteen hundreds. I don't see a house here. Yeah that's that's the point. That house is long gone but the foundational mound and debris remains are here. I follow her to the edge of an embankment and a sweeping view of the river. This location can. She says allowed early settlers to keep an eye out for enemies but instead of an advantage in recent years. The river has become a liability eroding the embankment embankment where the house once stood. I can show from aerial photo analysis. One out about twenty feet. Further less than twenty years ago. There's been that much erosion through storm surges primarily. Rising water is washing away. The last traces of the seventeenth century home sending the rocks that once formed its foundation back toward the river. I always research shows over the next century storm. Surges threatened to wipe out fourteen percent of historic sites along New Hampshire seacoast seacoast and if the erosion keeps happening the way it is that's just GonNa be more and more history that's GonNa wash away before we even get to it. It's not just an academic loss. Authentic history. She says is a selling point for tourist destinations worldwide and in coastal communities. It raises an important question. How best to preserve that past given even the threat of future storms for N._P._r.. News I'm Stephanie. Lighten in Portsmouth New Hampshire.

Prescription opioids destroyed families. Now, victims worry addiction stigma may keep them from getting justice.

"In two thousand three a man named James Craig sued Purdue pharma claiming they were responsible for his addiction pain suffering and financial losses after he was prescribed their drug oxycontin as Christopher Rowland reports in The Washington Post that case was dismissed in part because of the illegal behavior associated with the addiction and Christopher joins me on the come on his line good afternoon hello are you doing doing well over here take me back to that decision in the early two thousands why did the judge dismissed it so the the judge you know where the arguments from the plants as well as from Purdue pharma and found that the behavior of the plaintiffs actually was grounds for dismissal of the case he said that and agreeing with arguments submitted by Purdue pharma down to James Craig and other defendants had engaged in illegal behavior and I had mis use the product misuse oxycontin by crushing it up and snort in that or taking too much more than their doctors told them to take and so he said he was not going to you know go along with their victimization attitude and threw the case out and I was pattern of dismissals throughout the two thousands and has resulted in what some many plaintiffs now are concerned about is that they you know there's a stigmatization involved with addiction and it's very interesting and new ones case and when was it that courts became a little more sympathetic to people who are addicted to opioids was pretty recent it is and so eternal individual plaintiffs really struggled to have their claims succeed in court the idea that they had missed used the product and that they had crossed the product and we know that dealing in a legal manner really you prevented them from gaining a lot of traction in court it really the tide shifted once the now the planes that are now suing Purdue pharma as well as generic manufacturers and distributors and drug store chains now are being sued by governments states attorneys general and counties and cities that are claiming that those companies created a nuisance and so now that's why you have these companies actually you know scrambling to come up with a multi billion dollar settlement and you know sort of turn the tide in terms of the in the court court houses where governments have seen the success where the individual plaintiffs who did not need a for you know if someone was suing for a faulty airbag in their car or you know we faulty silicon breast implant or asbestos exposure those types of play defense and we had much more success in court the addiction is a much more you know difficult a lot of gray area these people did behave in a legal fashion and it did hurt them in court

Why the app economy wont touch your Christmas tree

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Why the app economy won't touch your Christmas tree by Owen Thomas from business? Welcome back to tech chronicle if you choose to deck your in box with gave verbiage make it this newsletter used Christmas tree there's not an app for that in a non demand world can't just push button and get a Christmas tree my fellow journalists. Kara Swisher joke is that San Francisco is assisted living for millennials though. This particular query came from a boomer colleague, it seems like some combination of just in time logistics gig workers and magical ELS ought to be able to just put a Christmas tree in your living room. And this is the crucial invasion here. Folks, take it away when you're done. It turns out there are plenty of services that will get you a Christmas tree Dali and on-demand moving service which operates in the bay area has a seventy five dollar tree special. Delivery included, though, a tree stand his extra lights and decorations though for that you're on your own. Or maybe task rabbit, which offers a variety of holiday services, including event, decorating and lighting installation. Balsam hill sells pre lit plug and play Christmas trees, but does not accept returns after December twenty fifth. So forget about sending it back. If you're feeling ecological friends of the urban forest will rent you a tree for ninety five dollars. But pick up and delivery our on you. Hello task grab it again plant, man dot com. Interior scape will deliver and pick up a live Christmas tree for two hundred dollars up. But it's strictly a phone or Email joint. So no online ordering. It's twenty eighteen somehow all of our instant gratification takes too long. Consumer needs have not been met by the internet. If that's not an argument for a long, boom. I don't know. What is what I suspect is keeping people away from this market is the burden of what's called, reverse, logistics. That is getting rid of stuff consumers no longer want returns and exchanges, but devil online retailers for simple items, like apparel electronic. Can you imagine the costs for a business of decking, your warehouse halls with artificial Christmas trees that are only used once a year? It's far easier to put the burden of storage or recycling on the customer wasteful, though. That may seem when I get a pitch for a Christmas, tree pickup and delivery service all top to this bubble until then enjoy the old fashioned burden of going out hauling home etry and lighting it up the old fashioned way. That's how Ramona lump terrier will be getting her tree at any rate. Please don't put an internet connected light. Switch on the thing. Owen? Thomas quote of the week. "Definitely I grew up really fast in that time period because I just had titan three weeks before. And so just as I'm saying Hello to someone. I I'm turning right around and saying goodbye and it happened. So quick, you know, she was just in LA like holding titan when he was. Oh, teeny tiny, and then I was literally watching her a sin, you know. So it's indefinitely matured me pretty quickly, though, but I had the best support system like have people flying who I hadn't talked to win years, and they flew into Atlanta, my family was there, and they were supportive in my face. Fans word salt. Awesome. That will make me cry alone. They were so supportive. I'm sorry, you had to go through right? All right. But I learned so much about friendships and relationships. And when you look at people in there are you speak to them, you're to be present. You know what I mean? Like, that's what that taught me above anything. I'd like to be present with people now and it's, it's sometimes hard, you know, in the industry, you like, oh, you had fashion shows, and you're texting and you this in like, is this person walks in, and this, and that, and I'm like, hi. How are you? Like I wanna be in that began with face to face. Yeah. Nothing like it. I love it. I crave it. Yeah. Yeah. What you get that in, in live performances. It's different. I know. That's not that's not a friendship but you've had some incredible live gigs recently. You know, you reference the Destiny's Child moment at Coachella. But you also performed with Stevie Wonder mistaken until, like two in the morning. One night in LA. Oh, it was so awesome. What's it like this is not the first time you've performed Stevie? Now, it was once with Destiny's Child in this time he asked me there, and it's an honor to get invitation from savy wonder because I grew up loving him loving his voice loving that harmonica loving his melodies just like how he makes us feel every emotion that we're so blessed to feel. So when I got on stage by the way, it was so late and we were supposed to be leading our nanny go. And so someone every working mom, by the way, relates on TV. The person that works was like he's about to go on. I was like I'm supposed to be leading money any go right now. He's like in five minutes. I was like, no problem. I was like I need. I have to stay here. You're gonna have to understand that tell you Nancy Stevie Wonder I'll pay you extra Stevie like it's all good God on stage and I did not want to get off the stage. He was just awesome. Because those are moments you don't take for granted. Yeah. Okay. So I wanna talk about your sunglasses collaboration coming up with smoke and mirrors at Barney's, which is one of the reasons we're here. First of all, why sunglasses I have been obsessed with glasses ever since I could afford them to be completely honest. What was your first period year emojis? Okay. You started bang. Jay some good glasses. And I remember I got so excited, I, I had them for the longest time, and I remember I took a boat trip with some friends, and I was so bummed because I had them since ninety eight and it was one of the first big things are bought myself in lost on a boat trip. I was so bummed. So I've always had this obsession with him. So I was so happy when this opportunity came about specially because mocha mirrors is like rooted in music, a main collection that they have is, of course, like inspired by songs. So it just made sense. The collaboration made sense in how did you figure out what you wanted the sunglasses to look like what the style would be was just like things I Kelly would wear use things. I would wear what looks great on off facial shapes. And, and what like what makes you feel fly, you know what I mean? 'cause glasses like also do that. You can have the worst makeup day or face day as soon as you put on some glasses. You like they can't tell. Oh, me nothing that home. And I love that. It's can't wear sunglasses in job interviews, right? Can you imagine if people starting to, like, oh no, I got this job? I'm good. So what was the process of creating fashion, like compared to the process of creating music? Like, did you feel like they were kind of similar? There were definitely kind simply because I think that each time you see it like, once you send it in, you know, to, to be made you like okay when it comes back to make sure it's everything that you wanted to be. And even if it's the smallest hint of something that you're just not sure about you have to say, I think we should try this over or make this lens a little bit darker than I think, is going to match the shade of the exterior of is like, all kinds of stuff you think. Yeah, but I think that just as much as you put detail in music, you do it in everything that you do by the way. One of my favorite details about you, your first name is actually Kalandria. Yes. Crate name. I'm mom anybody call you Kalandria my husband. Yeah. And who else Kalandria my husband? That's beautiful. Thank you. I like that. Well Kalandria give thank you so much. This has been a great conversation. I have truly enjoyed it. Thank you so much Kelly Rowland is working on an album with her sons help. Of course, she's got a.

"This is the Barneys podcast, the show that celebrates fashion style culture and most of all personality. Kelly Rowland has been in the spotlight since she was a teenager. I, of course, as a member of the massively successful girl group Destiny's Child, which pretty much owned the pop charts in the late nineties later, she became a solo performer, and since Destiny's child's split in two thousand and five she's had a thriving wide ranging career. She's released four solo albums, she's hosted TV programs and after the birth of her son, titan, she even wrote a book about motherhood. But most of all, she's found her voice as a champion of self acceptance so many people that will tell you the craziest things about yourself. There's only one thumbprint that looks like yours. So what you bring to the table is unique and beautiful. Like, don't let anybody tell you that you can't don't won't shouldn't when I sat down with Kelly, I had a lot of quest. For her about music, identity and living in the spotlight. But first things first, what are you wearing today? Kelly, Rowland,.
