"Weather on the 8s with Dave dildine in the WTO traffic center. It's been a day with a lot of traffic trauma, big pile up on 95 and spotsylvania county, Virginia, is clear the northbound diversion lifted, delays will ease gradually. Route three O one was the alternate, but now in brandywine, Maryland, there is a major crash involving multiple cars and a heavy police response closing route three O one, northbound between brandywine crossing and branch avenue to turn northbound drivers around. They held southbound traffic on three O one and route 5 branch avenue. When you do get by its single file, believe to the right, southbound, en route 5 branch avenue, a lot to sort out at this junction in brandy wine. This one will likely be of an extended nature. Route 50 at the bay bridge, it is too wet for two way traffic, slow past sandy point, only two lanes open. On the root four, Thomas Johnson bridge across the patuxent river traffic is stopped both ways because of a crash on the bridge. I 97 northbound after benfield boulevard, the crash lingers on the right shoulder. Baltimore, Washington Parkway, the latest crash southbound inside the beltway near four ten, otherwise volume delays on the Parkway on the beltway. And on two 70 northbound indicators and Germantown in the district, three 95, 6 95, southeast southwest freeway, along with D.C. and interstate two 95 moderately heavy traffic with no recent crashes to blame. "Up on our top stories on WTO, there are new developments today in the shooting of a Newport do's Virginia elementary school teacher by her 6 year old student, a D.C. school teacher, has died after being arrested by police in Los Angeles. We'll have details on these stories coming up in minutes on WTO. It's 1118. Time for traffic and weather on the aids, Rita kesslers and the traffic center. Well, in Virginia, we've definitely got a very fluid situation on 95 in the Fredericksburg area at the moment northbound 95 between 17 in the centerport Parkway is stopped again. Everybody had been getting by to the far right side. But again, right now nobody moving, maybe they're letting some vehicles get through in terms of response vehicles for the moment. Hopefully they'll be able to get that right side by again, but right now your delays are back to route three. After you get past it once they let people get by, everything looks good all the way across the up quantity to Springfield. Southbound 95 just the volume crossing the aqua Quan. Now northbound three 95, there was a mobile work crew, looks like it's passing king street trying to head towards shirlington, so keep an eye out for that. That should be in the left lane. If you're in Maryland, the earlier problems on two 70 of ease, everything looks good out of Germantown all the way to the lane divide onto either loop of the beltway. Westbound two 14, central avenue at hill road and shady Glen drive the right lane had been blocked with the utility work. Now we still have a variety of issues on the beltway. Let's start out with the good news, looks like the crash that was on the inner loop after Pennsylvania avenue that may have cleared that delay is definitely eased from Richie Marlboro road headed past the scene, but now we're seeing delays on the inner loop in the local lanes before I two 95 and coming off of southbound two 95 on to the Woodrow Wilson bridge at the beginning of the bridge, the crash was reported in the left lane. We also are still seeing delays on the outer loop at least, trying to head past Georgetown pike the crash along the right side with delays after river road, however the inner loop rubber necking delay has eased. The island of blissful balance awaits fly nonstop to Barbados from Washington dulles with United Airlines, book now on United dot com. I'm Rita Kessler WTO traffic. "The quicker picker upper. We are glad you could join us this afternoon. It's three 38. Traffic and weather on the 8s and when it breaks, Dave, what's the story out there now? Well, Brandon it's a serious crash involving a car on its roof and a heavy rescue response in Bethesda near NIH. Route three 55, Rockville pike is now closed southbound near Cedar lane. They're cutting someone out of a car right now from the beltway. Southbound traffic is turned around near AltaVista road. Northbound passed Walter Reed, traffic on three 55 squeezes past the apparatus single file to the right. Baltimore, Washington Parkway, near route 32, crash involving a delivery truck. Northbound, the truck and the debris blocking the left lane initially on the Parkway. Southbound traffic is also very slow if for no other reason, rubber necking. On 95 between 32 and 100 traffic is heavy both ways, but it's moving better on the interstate than it is on Maryland state two 95. Two 70 north and southbound, some congestion between clarksburg, hyatts town and urbana, no mishaps on two 70, 50 at the bay bridge good. A work zone in prince George's county on two 14 near one 93 eastbound traffic is slow through it. Arlington, Virginia, three 95, southbound in the E-ZPass lanes, the crash is clear, delays have quickly cleared, main lanes remain heavy, but there's nothing left to look at. Through Northern Virginia, today, like yesterday, like over the weekend in late last week, the volume delays on I 95 are intense. It will take a long time, hours likely to navigate from woodbridge to Fredericksburg, northbound, less intense delays, but still lengthy through Quantico, dumfries, and into woodbridge and toward newington. Again, the express lanes were open southbound, only minor delays noted on 66, and in the district routine congestion on three 95 hand D.C. two 95 ice is back at Gaylord national, enjoy a winter Wonderland featuring hand carved ice sculptures of the holiday classic a Christmas story, make memories and book today at Christmas at Gaylord national dot com. "The worst route in decades. The UN has warned that parts of Somalia are facing famine, thousands of people have died there. It's 5 18. It's traffic and weather on the 8s now let's catch up with Jack and the traffic center. All right, we're trying to get this work zone out of here if you're riding in Virginia slowly Adam and asses run in 66 east from Centreville headed toward Vienna. You're going to find single file getting you through. First work zones out in your 28 second one is beyond 50 headed from the fairfax county Parkway all the way out toward one 23. Just follow the lead at this point. You've got the single lanes getting through. Now, west on 66, we're hoping that work sounds about wrapping up as you approach and pass through the beltway interchange. Only the left lane had been getting by and the outer loop ramp to go west on 66 had been closed, riding into that work zone. So again, hopefully all this is in the wrap up stages. 95 is good to go out of Fredericksburg through woodbridge coming northbound into Springfield, no worries yet on three 95 all the way up to and across the 14th street bridge. There is work on 95 south as you approach in past Dale City, crews working there probably for another half hour or so taking away a single right lane to crash investigation and Fredericksburg on route three west before forest lane. You're going to find yourself under direction. This investigation will probably be into and through the morning rush hour this morning. All right, in Maryland, you're looking good between the beltways, both 95 and the BW Parkway. There had been an overnight issue on 15 out of Frederick, south of the three 40 split down your Elmer dirt road, that crash is now cleared. You're traveling is open delays easing quickly. The work zone should be wrapped up toward Annapolis, 50 headed westbound, leaving bay Dale drive out toward the severn river bridge all your travel lanes are open. Again, that works on wrapped up. Clean up in a crash at a Gaithersburg on two 70 going south into Rockville, mainline after shady grove road, the crash activity remains along the right side of the roadway. All right, just checked in a caller and she tells us that on route three O one and brandywine, southbound traffic is heavy and slow, very slow going and tells us that the crash after climber drive is blocking the left lane and crowding that center lane. You squeeze by to the right, southbound on three O one 5 heading for Waldorf. The closure of suitland Parkway remains outbound traffic through southeast D.C., is bumper to bumper and then diverted at nailer road, the closure between branch avenue and silver hill road ongoing for the crash investigation inbound inbound traffic on suitland Parkway gets by. Had apple is 50 westbound after root two, Jennifer rode X to 23. The crash response had blocked the right lanes. They've got most of the damage lined up on the shoulder now. Southbound from beltsville to the beltway on 95 south, the right lanes that go west on the outer loop. Slow traffic leads past the crash response, the crash blocks the right side of the merge, coming off the outer loop in northbound on two 70. It is slow going past old Georgetown road. The crash there, on two 70 north, blocking the left lane. You stay right to get by. Major delays outside of Harper's ferry at the Potomac and Shenandoah river bridges on route three 40, traffic was stopped for a while because of the crash between the West Virginia line and harpers ferry road. Travis was alternating that it was stopped, and it might still be with long delays on three 40 and bailout conditions on route 9 near hillsborough. 95 summer traffic is slow southbound through woodbridge and from dumfries through Stafford county and northbound and Fredericksburg and northbound into woodbridge, volume delays around the beltway in Maryland and in Virginia, 66, no recent incidents just heavy and a few stretches here and there. But if you're on the Baltimore Washington Parkway, it couldn't have come soon enough, had a northbound inside of the beltway jam from Chevrolet getting past four ten where the crash has officially cleared. Northbound route three slows through millersville, that's a work zone as planned, single lane will get by. Both sides of 50 are jammed to get to and across the bay bridge. There's now two way travel on the eastbound span the work that was westbound discontinued, but unfortunately westbound will not clear out eastbound in the delay at saint Margaret. This is no longer radar indicated we have a confirmed tornado on the ground a long route 50 north of buoy Mike's deferred at NBC four is joining us live to tell us what's going on. Mike, right now the circulation appears to be along route three O one south of the route 50 intersection just to the east of Allen pond park and just to the west of davidsonville park just north of the national capital radio and television museum right there on route three O one. If you're on route three O one, there are several exes here, get off, take cover. It looks like this cell will continue to move off to the southeast, and eventually it may affect route two 14 in between route three O one and davidsonville. So in this area here, you do want to take cover as it goes into more rural areas as it moves to the south of buoy but once again, this rotation. This is actually confirmed tornado now in between Allen pond park and davidsonville park in the buoy area to the south of the route 50 area and just to the east of route three O one right now is where the circulation is showing up on radar right now. And where is it headed as it moves to the southeast? Why did so many Victorian healthcare workers get infected?

"So if you think back to the second wave in victoria. One of the biggest problems was the number of healthcare workers who got seek. We saw more than three and a half thousand people who worked in healthcare catching carbon and approved really difficult to get the healthcare system back under control again. so norman. what went wrong there. And maybe take us back to the the very origins of coronavirus in victoria. And how we we came to see so many people get sick so there are two aspects to this in terms of healthcare workers. What was the aged care. Well over one hundred h residential care facilities and a lot of that. Those statistics in terms of three thousand five hundred were aged care workers in this kind of easy to understand how would happen in an age residential. Care because it's more like a home in a hospital and it just ran out of control and the fact that it was it was in so many care settings was there was just thing going wrong in that setting the real dilemma was. Why were there so many well over. A thousand healthcare workers infected in hospitals in victoria and some hospitals had hundreds and hundreds of people on furlough. What went wrong now. Western health which was run by professor infectious disease areas. Run by professor marion. Qena you've been overseas for time. Came back she really tried to run down what what went wrong. Because they got very few. In fact west there was only one infection in the first wave which was an abattoir worker. And then they were of hit by this truck which was in healthcare workers getting -ffected in the second wave and they were doing intensive contact tracing and trying to find out what was going on. They trained people in p. p. but it was only in a d and see you when you got the rest of the hospital there and it was in the rest of a hospital where they had their problem so today. We've got marion marion kane. Who's don an analysis of this with our colleagues and actually presented it yesterday at a conference marilyn welcome to chronic cast to speak with you today samaritan route three thousand five hundred thousand six hundred healthcare workers infected and quite a lot in hospitals. Let's just look at the hospital situation because in a sense that's what you were looking after an western health and you've done a detailed analysis of what happened. Can you just describe that experience in what you've come up with the fast way. We only had a single healthcare worker. Who was infected at western health. This was a nurse who had extensive prolonged in room exposure. A win. There was a patient who was in a pre-symptomatic phase admitted for work related injury from cedar meets. Which is an abattoir been had an outbreak but that was not known at the time this particular patient than required surgery but everybody else was exposed in the operating room. Sir tickle masks and i protection in the presence of what we call aerosol generating prestigious so these procedures such as putting the breathing tube into the patient to nisa ties them always tested negative and simulates some really valuable lessons. At that time we learnt that it was really important that on this thing staff every shift with document fever and respiratory symptoms in order to ensure that a person be rapidly test that we also routinely put abacus into quarantine even if i had no respiratory symptoms it really reinforced the concept of a bet an unrecognized infectious person presents the greatest risk to

Digital Health: A CVC Perspective with Sean Cheng, Investment Manager at Phillips Ventures

"Welcome back to the outcomes rocket saw marquess here and today I have the privilege of hosting a Dr Shawn Chang He's a PhD in engineering and then investment manager at Phillips Ventures of the portfolio of promising early stage companies includes baby scripts, Zell Might Tani to drive the Phillips Health Tech Vision he's interested in early stage investment opportunities in digital health, medical devices and imaging based diagnostic prior to ventures. He drove key strategic decisions for the Phillips leaderships on topics, including wearables, health, cloud digital transformation, and data interoperability. Previously, Sean held positions at the Boston Consulting Group, the US FDA and NASA SEAN also. Serves on the board of directors of the Professional Center for child, Development Board of advisors at. Johns Hopkins University. And the Advisory Board of the World Economic Forum's Global Shapers Community Sean holds his PhD in engineering from the University of Cambridge England where he developed expertise in medical device design simulations and optimization algorithms. I'm privileged to have him here on the podcast with us today to chat about innovation in how we fund it, and how we view it within today's Environment John such a pleasure to have you here with us face for having me salt and that was a mouthful, but a takes the intro. That's Hey listen I mean for the things that you've done in your career it's like a the tip of the iceberg. So certainly going to be a fun talk today before we dive into the nitty gritty of you know the investments and an innovation I love to find out more about what inspires your work in healthcare yes. Sure So I think. Ever since I can remember you know is one of these professions where it was always going to be around rice on my my father's. Told that to me when I was very young. People are always going to get sick and you know this is something that is near and dear to everyone's hearts and something they worry about. So I, you at a very young age looking at healthcare is something worthwhile doing not to say that everything else is in November and? Certainly in the healthcare side, there's always relevance and and There was something that's from impact side of very worthwhile in a you know a few years ago. I, say. My Dad also. got into a bit of the healthcare trouble and I was in consulting time the generals consultant and having done engaged. She focused on cardiology and the more invasive procedures within cardiology like artificial hearts and L. Ads. I've felt You know I was almost blind sided when he was you know going in for a quadruple bypass and you know I I should probably rely and and it will come back to industry a little more. So something more personal more recently. And I can appreciate that greatly, Sean, you know a mixture of your dad's advice and life experiences you just kind of gravitated to the the field and and I mean, you've just done extraordinary work love to park a bit for a second here on the venture business and and how exactly you guys are looking at your your early stage companies and investments. What exactly are you looking to do with those? Are they adding value to the to the ecosystem? Yeah. Sure. You know I think. There's many aspects of this love to talk at length about all of them, but I'll just spare you that give you the highlights here. So from a corporate venturing point of view, it's always been cyclical as an industry and You know in the last ten years, we've seen a revival of you know corporate venturi with new formats approaches, and this is a will be really try to carve out as ventures. So we started a around twenty-six teen in the intent was to create a team and find that can provide that early stage reconnaissance as well as know how in working with founders, and so the given an idea of what was happening to pass our emanate folks was dealing with. The early stage investments as well, and so they would take a similar approach as an acquisition of a let's say, a two billion dollar company to a post money valuation but ten million dollar early stage startup, and so that combined with a lot of the various functional corporate requirements like in privacy security insurance etc was really a lot for any you early stage coming to handle, and so we WANNA do is provide a center of excellence as well as a team that can go and negotiate these deals and streamline the process, and so we were able to reduce a deal flow time live from. Don't call me on this, but you know nine months to a year down to route three months. And so that was one of the. Young one is just You know mutual benefit. So I. Think we were allowed unnecessary terms into the term sheets that you know we never really exercise and so Knowing that, moving the future, making a judgment call on you know, how can we help the founders succeed and then help them scale? The company's best is sort of where we really emphasize that those ventures in I know everyone says this, but we try to be more founder friendly than the typical CBC, which has a stereotype over the years, and so that's I think you know where where our value add would be you know bringing the resources in channels and infrastructure of fields, corporate the mothership, but also being. Venture and founder friendly as well. And then we can sit there work together with the companies over time to help them succeed for both sides and think that's awesome. Shine. You know you'd think about a lot

Stop Stepping To Your Vision

"Right but so. Most you know Rachel Pearson spoke at the last two hacking lives and she's made. She's also the Queen of Tiktok, and my daughter is her biggest fan, and anyway she's actually going to boise and my daughter so excited to talk with her, which is going to be so fun anyway, she. She, she walks me over a really cool question about you know taking things once airtime, and how you create your vision, and how you bypass things in all kind of stuff so I'm GonNa play her her part of Oxford right here, senior the question and then I'm GonNa. Come back, answer if someone called me out today, and and they were very spot on. They said I feel like you are taking the stairs. One step at a time when you are destined for greatness, so my question to you is. How did you create a vision? Did it fall into your lap? Did you read a book how you create a vision for your life in Your Business that? Keeps everything going. You know like the infinite game from Simon Sinek. Thank you so so so much. Okay, so I think it's a really good question, and it's interesting because. I think a lot of us. We get into this game and we don't really know what's possible where we're going or any of those things you know like. I didn't I didn't know what was happening. Today was possible by any stretch of the machinations. So I think sometimes you bypass your vision. In fact, it was kind of a really cool. What a really cool experience I was Remember we did. The final startup story was with mixer at this. In Utah called the drive, our comedy club and had JP sears. Come into roast me for an hour before we. We did the interview and it was so funny, but anyway at dinner I asked JP makes what's next few. What's what's the next plan? And he has smiled at me. He looks so content something that I've never been my wife and he was like It's like you know what he's like so far. Everything that's happened me surpassed wherever possible select some China just enjoy, and just like enjoy things as they. They. Come and be grateful for them. And I was like Oh my gosh. That is amazing like I need to learn that, so there's that piece of it right and he gets entrepreneur struggle with us, because because We're always looking, you know come back to my my last podcast, so talking about We're so tied into achievement achievement. She moved. Forget about the fulfillment side, so there's an apartment, the other side which I understand Moore's this goal of achieving and trying to take over the world and stuff like that and You Know I. Remember A- At the very I live in ever went to I remember I one thousand dollars to go to which is like the first step for me, my call so much money like stressed out and the speakers talking up people selling different things and and I remember. I can never Ford this thing for two grander, five, ten, grand, or all these different things kind of being like bummed out about it right and I. Remember Admits Kid and the kid was. Maybe a year, older Mir, maybe same age. I was like I was twenty two at the time he been twenty three or something but we are about the same age and and I saw the the presenters Solas Mash grouping route three signed up for it and I was like how did you? How are you for that like I can I can figure it out for that and he's like. Oh, he's like well. There's two ways to get. Get the top you can work your way, and you can buy your insights by my way I'm like well for sounds like this leap in thought I'd never have crossed my mind before my okay, it's pretty cool and then then it's more questions like well. How'd you four for this and he's like I'm actually in twelve masterminds. This time I was like what how did you do that? And he came back and said well what I did is that. What and He's like I. wanted to go these things, but I couldn't afford us as they found. People who kind of trained toss of to so I wanna go is mastermind. Groups obviously can be expensive for everyone to pay. For you for you know if you guys want to go, all this is going to be really expensive so if you're interested. I think if you pay me ten grand and I get. I don't know twenty people. Two hundred thousand dollars Algo. Join all of them and I'll come back until you cool stuff I learned and he got all these people are paying twenty grand. And he took the money, or whatever it was I don't know. And he joined all these mastermind groups, and he bought his way in, and he got up, and he built his company very very very very quickly and I thought that was just a strategic thing. You know I remember celebrity apprentice. Few Watch delivery apprentice in the past I three or four episodes, people do things that was like fundraisers. It was like Corey's money sleep while on the street and they're try. Lemonade always seems raise. Money wasn't tough. I don't know two or three seasons in when the dude from kiss. that. Yeah. Kiss Gene Simmons. GM's was on it and They do fundraising things out there trying to raise money that hustling and he just sat, there picked up his phone made a phone call and got a check from his buddies for half million dollars, and you destroyed everybody else out of the Moore. Looking at thinking, he's thinking in a different level and everybody else says the thought difference, right? Everyone's like like here's the task must do the thing. And they jumped up him. Trump except step-by-step. Whereas Gene Simmons came back and said Look I can do that or I. Can just do this and we'll jump you know a thousand steps past everyone else. And I think I remember watching have now and just like okay. I got started thinking more strategically. US think tactically which tactics are so important is how we get the thing done, but it takes stopping stepping back and looking at things more strategically of okay. Here's next step next up. You want to jump five or ten or twenty tears is not going to happen by you. Doing the next step is to stepping back and saying what's the next thing like what's the? What's the big the big domino? The next I don't know there's ways to phrase. It I'm not sure the best way but conceptually it's it stopping the tactics instead back strategically and thinking different right. Click funnels I'd so many amazing strategic conversations with friends and people The worldwide software company right, if you, if you at the expert, secrets book like we talked about movement and finding a future base 'cause and like all these things that weren't. They weren't tactically like. Here's the next step it. It's like how do we? How do we? We've these things into our culture right? How do we? H-. How do you do these things? They caused these incremental big shifts as opposed to just increasing your your your ads by ten, or you're just created another friend and offer it's like. Have you create things that have mass shifts? Mass changes things like that. I think it really comes back stepping back away from the tactical, which means getting out of the day today, which means taking a vacation, which is hard for us right or or doing strategy your team, and just they look for three days, and we're GONNA work. We're talking about like what's possible. It's a future. Where could we go you know not not with Nextstep, but like if what if we just destroyed these steps and had a whole new thing like what would that look like? And how do we get there and you pull it? Poor Gene Simmons instead of fundraising. You just pull out A. Just, you know, put your phone and call buddy in and get five hundred thousand dollars in five seconds. That's that's the power of it so I. Hope it helps the no, it's not a full answer. Hopefully gets the Wilson head-spinning. Everyone else's listening help that helps as well

The King James Bible

"D._c. And we're here to talk about the king james bible now. If you were to go rooting through your grandma's attic nick and you were to come across what you thought would be a first printing king james bible. How would you know while you need to do is go to ruth chapter three verse fifteen and see how it ends. If that verse ends with he went into the city you would know that you had an authentic sixteen eighteen eleven first printing bible and by the way it would be worth a mint but if it said she well. That's not a sixteen eleven bible now. We'll get to that in a second. Can what we have here in. The museum of the bible is actually a visual and real representation of the history of the english bible. It begins with tindale in the fifteen twenty s and tindale gave his life to bring the bible into the language of the english people now we know wickliffe and wycliffe was a translation of the latin latin into the english. What we're talking about is translation of the original greek new testament in the hebrew old testament so we start with tindale then we come to fifteen thirty five and we have the coverdale tale bible named for miles covered and it was largely the tindale translation fifteen thirty seven. We have the matthew bible. It was also a tindale associate associate who produced this bibles name was john rogers but he gave himself a pseudonym of thomas mathew and so it's known as the matthew bible then we come to fifteen thirty nine and we have the great bible and it's the great bible because of its size it was meant to be elect turn bible and it is quite a specimen sleman in its size and then we come to the bible of the puritans the geneva bible in the fifteen fifty and fifteen sixty s these were the puritan exiles john calvin geneva and calvin believed that people should work and so these english scholar should work and they worked on an english translation geneva bible first bible with notes and the first english bible with verse sophistication based on a greek testament that was published in fifteen fifty one called the fantas greek taxed and there's a copy of that in the museum of the bible as well when we come to the bishops bible in fifteen sixty eight this was a bit of a response to the geneva bible which sure the puritans and the dissenters anglicans wouldn't be left out so we've got the bishop's bible and then we come to an important date sixteen four king james ames had been office for only a few months by the time we get to february sixteen. Oh four and over the course of three days meetings were held with puritans anglican bishops and the king james overseeing it and one of the decisions that came out of the hampton court conference of sixteen o four was the need for a new translation nation and sure enough seven years later the authorized version authorized because it was authorized by the king himself was published the king king james version and now we get to ruth chapter three verse fifteen and the original the very first printing of this authorized version urgen by the authorized printer in the city of london and you can look right at it because this version here at the museum of the bible was open right to route three fifteen. The ending has that and he went into the city because of the versus sort of a go between with ruth and boaz. They're both subjects. Both of those proper nouns occur in this verse and so what is the pronoun in the sixteen eleven it's he but the realization is in the hebrew manuscripts that were actually discovered between green sixteen eleven and sixteen thirty three that it's she not he that is not a reference to boaz but a reference to ruth so in sixteen thirteen thirteen a printing of the sixteen eleven was done and it's called the great she bible of sixteen thirteen. So how do you know if that treasure treasure you found a grandma's attic is indeed an original first printing sixteen eleven check the ending of route three fifteen and that's the king james version version bible and i'm steve nichols on location at the museum of the bible and thanks for listening to five minutes in church history for more ordination or

How we can find common ground on climate change

"When we cover climate change, and we do cover climate change on this podcast. We get feedback. We get Email. We get responses on social media, and we get reviews, and I'm going to describe for you, the two typical replies. I is probably familiar. It is pessimistic and depressing. We have destroyed the earth with our greed. There's no point in even having children the predictions are catastrophic. And they're getting worse. It's already too late and our leaders don't care and fair enough. Lord knows I do feel that way. Sometimes more often recently. In fact, the second type of response, and this usually comes on social media is either denial or anger this winter was freezing. So how can this be true? Scientists are fudging the data the earth has been warmer than this and cool to gain in the past and any way I didn't cause climate change. Personally. What does the government expect me to pay for? And no, I don't understand that. Response, but I also don't engage within because I have learned that nothing. Good comes of yelling at people about how wrong they are on the internet. So we sat down last week after another set of bad news stories that you may have heard and we asked ourselves not how we should cover the latest round of awful climate news. But if there was a way to discuss this issue that would help us have a better conversation. If we could find a way to focus on the issue that would help those among us who are despairing find some hope and would also offer an olive branch and an invitation to talk to the people who just don't want to believe because honestly right now, not wanting to believe can feel kind of understandable. Today's discussion is our attempt to do that. And today's guest is the perfect person for it. I'm Jordan heath Rawlings. And this is the big story. Catherine Heyhoe is a climate scientist, she's a Canadian who's working as a professor at Texas Tech. And she is the guest editor of this month's edition of Chatelaine magazine. Of all the magazines to guest at it as a climate scientist, why a lifestyle magazine, my favorite thing to do is talk about climate change in places in an outlets where you would never expect it so people think of climate change as this green issue, or this environmental issue or increasingly this political issue, but climate change affects every aspect of our lives. And the choices we make in every aspect of our lives can go a long way towards helping us fix this problem. So in that sense where better to talk about this then in a lifestyle magazine. So give me a sense. And maybe from a broader perspective, but maybe if you have some specific examples of the way lifestyle choices can actually make an impact because we do talk about climate change every few weeks here because it's always a big story now, and one of the things that always comes up is that the little things sometimes feel too small to make a difference and the big things feel impossible that is exactly it. And so if we feel like nothing we do will ever. Ever make a difference. Then why even talk about it because it just gets depressing? Yeah. And so so what is where is there a sweet spot? I guess where you can do some things that won't, you know, won't make you change your lifestyle and move off the grid and start, you know, using one hundred percent recycled everything, but also aren't just insignificant things that actually do make a a measurable difference. Yeah. There. Absolutely. Are so often we have that perception of while, you know, if I really wanted to live in environmentally friendly life. I would move up to the Yukon and go off the grid. But the reality is I live in Toronto Montreal Vancouver or Edmonton. And that's not the way that my life is structured or set up to be. So what can I do interestingly, I think one of the most effective things that every single person can do whether they're a student or somebody who rents so they can't make a lot of changes even in their light bulbs little in their home. Whether we feel like it's really out of our budget to go with something super fancy like plugging car. No matter who you are. And where we. Live the number one most important thing that we can do about this issue is talk about it. Because surveys have showed that hardly anybody actually has a conversation about it. Because maybe we're afraid it might start an argument with uncle Joe or next door neighbor or often, we're just afraid it would be depressing. We don't have anything positive or constructive to say. And so we don't talk about it. And here's the connection if we don't talk about it. Why would we want to do anything about it? And if we don't want to do anything about it. Why would we make changes in our own lives? And why would we encourage others to do so too so talking, but it is really the most important thing. But not the science little details. Rather talking about what we talk about in the Chatelaine issue. How is climate change affecting our lives today in the places where we live if we live in the Maritimes if you live in BC, if we live in the prairies, if we lived in cities, if we live out in the country, if we live up in the Arctic how is it affecting our lives today, first of all as Canadians and then second of all. What are some things that we can do to fix it? And there's a whole range so there's individual lifestyle choices one of the most important things. We can do individually is step on the carbon scales. Google carbon footprint calculator and fill in your life. And it will tell you where the biggest bang for your buck is so for some of us if we live out in the suburbs, and we commute downtown on. We drive ourselves. It might be our commuting. That is actually the biggest part of our footprint for others of us. It's what we eat. If we eat very beef and meat intensive diets to route three times a day that contributes a lot to heat trapping gas emissions for me, the biggest part of my carbon footprint was my flying. Because I live down in Texas all my family's up in Toronto and Ontario. I also travel around to talk to people about climate change. And so I've been investing very heavily the last couple years in trying to transition I'm actually up to about three quarters of my talks to virtual talks online. And then when I do travel somewhere to give talks I make sure I have a bunch of them lined up. I was just in Indiana this past week, and I had seven talks and ate more meetings. That I didn't four days it was a lot of work, but the carpet per print of each individual event was actually quite low. What's the biggest problem that you see when you're trying to convince people that they really need to take this seriously and make those changes in their lifestyle. What do they doubt? Well, we often think that they doubt the science that the idea that somehow science is a matter of opinion, I can decide whether it's real or not. And if you follow the headlines, especially listening to politicians, you would certainly think that's the case because that's a lot of the talking points that they use. I just don't believe that stuff. It's just not real. But when we actually look at polling data across Canada and the US cross North America, we see that actually most people agree climate is changing and most people agree. It will affect plants and animals and future generations and polar bears where the rubber hits the road, though, is almost none of us think it's going to affect us personally. So it's something. That sure I would like to care about it for future generations or people in developing countries. But if it's not gonna affect me in the places where I live my family my community. Why does it matter? So I really do think that the most dangerous myth that the largest number of people have bought into is it doesn't matter to me. And if it ever does get serious or dangerous than somebody else is gonna fix it for us. Tell me a little bit about how you have those conversations with people you're a Canadian climate scientists in Texas, how did those conversations go? Do you meet a lot of climate change resistance? I think we have the stereotype up here. The Texas is deeply conservative. And there are a lot of people there who don't believe in climate change it is. And there are a lot of people who are very suspicious of the science. But today it's gotten to the point where almost anyone can point to some way in which climate is changing around them. Whether it's hurricanes getting stronger with a lot more rainfall associated with them whether it's wildfires burning out of control, greater and greater area record breaking floods or heatwaves people. Point two, something unusual. That's happening today. So today, many more people are curious even down here in Texas, then ten years ago, when we first moved here, I'm getting calls from landowners, and farmers and producers and water managers and people who are traditionally very conservative. But they want information on what's happening. So that's kind of a clue where to begin a conversation. Whether it again is with a family member, a friend colleague neighbor or somebody in our city or area who we want to talk about about making a difference begin the conversation not with something that you most disagree on. But begin the conversation was something that you most agree on. And if you don't know what that would be will then spend some time getting to know that person or that group. I figure out what makes them tick. What do they value? What's important to them? Start the conversation with something that you genuinely share with them. And then connect the dots because we both live in this location because we are both parents because we both are fiscal conservatives who care about. The economy because of who we are. Then actually were we already care about climate change. We just might not realize it because if we are person who cares about the place
