He actually beat tweeted a physical testing and he beat Liam broady in the sprints. And he's ever let Liam from at down. You know so the the good old days and Diaries players over the as well the connection speed strong I. Don't believe I don't believe Clusky WanNa Erase. We have a video someone. The archives I think it was potentially down to Liam Brody's lack of effort a little bit, but but hey, at the end of the day still. On the day And Liam GonNa have time for it ever. Since that's for sure, you find that you got to send that to me to. Also we have a top academies, a list on functional tennis and we just don't WanNa ride. A best top academies are Sotos entered. "Hello everybody happy while wherever you are on this glorious year revision we can came under your Eurovision Song contest fan you. I think you're even begin to it this year. Weren't you in in Rotterdam so? Have you been coping without the prospect of any sort of live dies than well getting Easter? Now Joel tennis being canceled Irvine being cancelled. Yeah I had tickets for the first time and it's law it was council but hopefully out next year and we had celebration on on the TV last night and had some Swedish food and some cocktails to kind of raise a bit of a glass to what what never happened. But but yeah I think I think you were watching us. Well Joe. You're right yes I was. I catch Lubbock came. I'm going to hold my hand up here. Johnny Logan he comes on the TV and have no idea who he is by turns out. He's he's pretty much the go of of the on contests Mariah a bit. Like the Federa of of your vision life. If you don't tennis you you at least know the name federal. Maybe Johnny Logan could could be a bit like that but yeah. I was quite surprised. You shouldn't you've never heard of him. He's one well three times twice as a singer songwriter. Say He is the kind of the winningest person in in your vision. I guess you could say but yeah maybe actually we can do a European podcast as well. But let's let's go to tennis because we're going to be looking at the Italian. Upn and top eight movements. The happened in rave the last few decades. And perhaps I should lead on this one job because I'm going start with a moment featuring the man himself rapper. One of surprise well yes and listeners. And said he'd rougher bear with us because we all see you're not the end of the alternative Casey's season I mean let's be honest because light Madrid. Rome is Dallas. Hi I think he's one like what nine titles zero something ludicrously say is as as hardly a surprise to kind of see him featured this list say yes came. More is was the first moment. We're WE'RE GONNA be reliving. Well I thought we have liquor two thousand five. Which was you know I play horses and really where he takes. The kind of took it by storm. He won the first time. Yeah his first of nine titles. I think back in five and so he came up against Korea. Who at the time I guess was probably the most to stop ish claycourter of over air or at least one of them very face competitor for sure but the final was another five-set Masters Final five-set thriller? It was over five hours long. Which if you think about now if they were doing that consistently Austin Final Monte Carlo Madrid. That would just be insane. I mean I actually am believe that they used to do this to be called with the but yeah it was. It was a real ding. Dong to one of the better word. Joe Six four three six six three full six and then rougher one at seven six on a law set tiebreak but think about this much. Rougher was a double breakdown and fifth say. Who's three lockdown Sakaria? Really could've gone on us up momentum going away and one but I think really is kind of weakest point throughout his whole career was was his mental strength and he kind of collapsed that combined with with. Rafa you know. Obviously he's attitude his diehard shoot. Never giving up. He was on like a sixteen match winning streak at this point and say obviously he. He had a lot of belief in his game. And but I think Korea would be very devastated after this loss at I think. Actually in his post-match she interceded say this was one of the hardest defeats of his career. I think it was interesting to is. I think Korea probably getting into this matching gains clay season. Yeah he's probably thinking. I'm beatable on clay call. There is no one else out there better than me and who comes along on the Dow eighteen year old teenage eh relatively unheard of and I think this match proved that even when Korea was playing his absolutely best tennis possible. That was someone else out there better than him and I think he was kind of disheartened by that and I think this much great show us. You said mentally he you know he wasn't as strong as some of his other competitors or I think when you're three love up Double in the fifth set us really should be closing that match out and he wasn't able to do that. I think that's one of the things we might associate with a player who you know as brilliant as he is in Korea kind of on the mental side of things. I don't think you could put him up there with the greats and I kind of look at this match. I look at the two thousand four French Open final as well where he Gaston Gaudio. In the final game was five sets but again crucially he was two sets up. He was six love. Six three up was unable to close out the the match. And you know he's probably one of these as you put in the category of greatest players never have one. Ud wonder if if he hit if he had won if he had won this final in in Rome beaten Dow that would have given him the confidence indicate and reinforce that belief that he was and he was at the time the best the best clay court player in the world. I think obviously that loss against scout and then going into this match against Rafeh just his. His mental side of things just wasn't subscription. A Rafeh had beaten him in the Monte Carlo. Final just a couple of weeks before this so again he knew he was up against and he kind of let it. Let it slip away to be honest with you and Yeah so I just thought you know. Obviously this was this was a great match and it was symbolic because again you have this is like the birth of of Raffarin. His kind of play. Call dominance in this. Totally kind of pulsing off of his. You know the best steak or two at the time we had people like Carlos Moya one Ferrara Cowdrey. Kara in a sort of all very good establish trae which just as soon as Raff kind of started working his magic. He'd I guess it kind of became almost impossible. Perhaps to argue against for being the best. Geico

Are Some People Immune to Mosquitoes?

"And here in Georgia or getting our first mosquitoes of the year for me. That means I got a bunch of bytes when I ventured outside for a socially distant walk yesterday but are some people immune to mosquitoes brain stuff. It's Christian Sager. If you're like most people you hate mosquitoes. They're kind of the Andy Dick of the insect world annoying and in some cases dangerous. If we rate animals by the number of deaths they cause these little bloodsuckers top the charts by a wide margin and this is due to their transmission of malaria and other harmful diseases. And whether your next mosquito bite causes serious illness or intense frustration. We can all agree. Mosquitoes are just the worst. But are some people immune to mosquito bites I? Let's be clear mosquito. Bites aren't actually bites when a mosquito lands on you she uses her purpose it's a long double tube mouthpiece to Pierce your skin and get at the blood underneath and yes. That's a she every single mosquito that has ever been. You has been female. They bite you because they need a protein in your blood to develop their eggs when a mosquito uses her antenna to sense the warm blood beneath your skin and then pops her bosses in to tap your capillaries one of those tubes inject saliva. While the other one withdraws blood. The saliva contains enzymes that act as a Mild Painkiller and thins the blood to prevent. Clotting your body interprets these enzymes foreign invaders and produces histamine histamine binds to receptors in the bite area dilating local blood vessels this increased blood flow summons. More white blood cells. And when you get too much histamine the bite area can swell and redden creating what's called a wheel yeah wheel. That's the word of the day now. Each person will react to a bite. Differently and your allergies will vary so. What makes a mosquito choose a certain person? Well there are a number of factors one of the biggest being that there are more than three thousand known varieties of mosquitoes. And they're not all looking for the same thing for those that dig a nice sip of human blood smell body temperature. In genetics play huge roles. According to scientists at Rotterdam research each human body can produce anywhere from three hundred to four hundred distinct chemical odors. Some of which are bug magnets and others. They might be bug. Repellent research from a chemist named all. Rick Burke shows that mosquitoes are particularly fond of carbon dioxide. That's released from explanation and the skin and they also like lactic acid which present on our skin after exercise now drinking beer being pregnant and being a bigger person can all also make you more attractive to Mosquitos. Diet and blood type. Surprisingly don't seem to matter so much. Everybody has these yummy chemicals on their body. But it seems that the people mosquitoes avoid produce higher amounts of repellent chemicals Dr James Logan from Rotterdam set up a pretty weird experiment to see if he could find these all important. Repellent Chemicals is teams separated people into two groups MOSQUITO FAVORITES AND MOSQUITO MS. They put these folks in body size foil bags to collect their odors for two hours and they used a chromatograph to analyze the chemicals. They'd collected and hooked electrodes up to mosquito antenna to see what the bugs thought of each smell. They found about seven or eight made a difference. These odors were present insignificantly different quantities between those people who were attractive to Mosquitos and those who weren't their study published in the Journal of Medical. Entomology cited to chemicals as significantly repellent. One called six methyl five Heston to one which apparently smells of Nail Polish remover. And another called Jared Acetone which has a kind of floral odor as of this recording the race to use these and other chemicals as a new. Super Bug. Repellent is in full swing. So you probably know that. Bacteria is largely responsible for the various smells of the human body. Each human being is home to a unique mix of trillions of microbes. It's sort of like a fingerprint now. Our genes may play a large role. In determining what sort of microbial life forms we end up hosting in two thousand fifteen a team led by doctor. Manuela Fernandez grand untested the Herod ability of attractiveness to mosquitoes using twins. The twins would put a hand into either end of a sealed dome along with twenty female mosquitoes. Now don't worry. They weren't allowed to bite. Researchers gave each subject in attractiveness score compared to the other hand identical twins had consistently more similar scores compared to fraternal twins so genes do seem to play a role. This may be tough news for the twenty percent or so of people that mosquitoes find particularly attractive. If you're one of the local mosquitoes favorite dishes. Remember to keep some kind of bug repellent with you and to wear long sleeves and pants if the weather allows especially in areas of the world where these bugs carried diseases like malaria or dengue. And I suppose there's a little light at the end of this mosquito net tunnel here. Some people do have a chance of building up a tolerance after repeated mosquito bites but for others. The allergy just

"Running for this and the previous years there's that I've been to your vision like they also expand all of their transit options in Keiv like their trains usually close up at around midnight but they're just like Oh. No we're going to at least two. Am just because we've got a whole bunch of people who are kind of out in the boonies need to get back into the city and yeah like getting around is not a problem well. I'm just thinking it's like any major. Sporting event went at Gillette Stadium here in Massachusetts where they're going to run a couple extra commuter rail because there's a bunch of people down down by the stadium who want to get back to the city right it. Yeah and I believe there's a train station. That's like not too far from Rotterdam. Ahoy so that is correct yeah. I'm just happy that it's happening in the Netherlands wins because getting to the Netherlands from the US is fairly easy. Ski Airport is a major hub for a lot of airlines Delta partners of KLM there. You know you have all of like the smaller Intra Inter Europe Airlines. There's plenty of options. They are and then Ski Pole is about twenty five minutes by train to Rotterdam if you if you take the express us there's also Rotterdam. The Hague Airport which I did not know. was that thing until this week before so it's definitely more of a regional airports sports unless you're GONNA so unless you're GONNA be coming in from someplace else in Europe. Maybe focus on people alternately if you're in Europe before the contest why not take the train. I think that's our plan. We're still the hammering out. A number of the details was like just be easier to do that and there's a very good chance that will be able to like stop off in Belgium on the way to Rotterdam so i. Mike currently have my eye on Copenhagen's so I may be planning it in but we'll see I think there's even a train from London to Netherlands. It's not a long trip. If you count airport report time it could end up being faster to go by train than to fly even if the flight itself is only forty five minutes. I keep looking at places where that's not the case where it's like. No you take a plane. Oh Yeah Yeah we'll keep looking at places like Copenhagen and Finland where it's like you can take a train for sixteen hours or you could just take a plane and those cases as yeah probably your various. Oh I forget if it was in the packet or if it was just someplace else about the bid book for Rotterdam. Damn saying that they have the most glamorous McDonald's in all the Land Ei. I saw that somewhere you exactly what McDonald's they were talking about and they're not incorrect correct. It looked very efficient. It had two levels okay. They no longer have the strip waffle mcflurry but maybe bring it back for your vision Asian. Maybe maybe let's what else do we know at this point instead of just serve hypothesizing about how beautiful. McCall's will be next year well as of this recording. There are thirty two countries entries that have indicated that they're going to participate that number may change by the time this episode goes live so yeah sixty countries it won't be sixty countries but in countries like what Khazakstan will not be one of them. Gaza extent yeah yeah he said No. We're not extending an invitation this year. So Oh The Netherlands is also announced that they are planning on doing a fully internal selection which is going to be the first time that's happened since Israel did that. In nineteen ninety eighty nine so first time this millennium the host country doing full internal. I don't know how many is that actually is but in the Netherlands doesn't want to fix what is broken. That was my thought exactly. The eyes of Europe are on them. They're not going to switch back to to open selection. Yeah it especially especially if knowing that generally you don't WanNa win two years in a row. It seems smarter to keep things internal because that way you can find a good entry but not too good in it yeah well. That's traffic. I'm curious about is how is Netherlands going to play this like. Are they going to be legitimate in sending a very restrung entry or are they going to go or are. They going to send someone who does armpit. I for three minutes. I would be here for that. They would need to uh-huh. We joked now but next year when it win I mean they just had to make sure that they have a lyric in there so nope just thinking about the techniques. It's making me smile. Seventh Heaven the after anyways just some other things that are sentenced down at the head of delegations meeting which is also the submission deadline is march ninth so we will have all of the songs by March ninth next year yeah and then the goal is for tickets to go on sale by the end of the year and be less expensive than the tickets for this year which feels like the lowest barth to clear. I think tickets goal is always to have it be by the end end of the year preceding the contest but you know all of those logistics like it depends on like what stage designed going with and how they have to block out the venue ooh for cameras and equipment and all of that but I'm really excited about this like everything's looking great so far well. That's going to do it for this episode of the Euro. What thank you for listening snag. The European podcast is hosted by Mike mccomb. That's B and Ben Smith. "It's fine. It's yeah it's fine I was. I was mostly just trying to remember if that was the year that they had the calliope. You know that was twenty so that was twenty ten and I think that one did better anyway. The Netherlands is moving on. Did neverlands is only missed four contests they missed eighty five live and ninety one because of national holiday conflict and then in ninety five and two thousand and two that was when relegation was used to determine who who actually got to compete and Netherlands just did not qualify those years pretty good attendance record. Their biggest challenge was from two thousand five to twenty twelve where your vision. It's switched to a semi-final format and other. Lind's just could not qualify. I'm not entirely entirely sure what the deal with that was. In Two thousand and five Glenis grace we talk about quite a bit last summer because she was on America's got talent for reasons since late because we because we had to pay attention to America's got talent yeah yeah but yeah she was their representative in two thousand five didn't advance and yeah they it really tried everything. It seemed like they were doing internal selections. They had national selections. The tried songs of all different styles sales and things that felt current in some cases like the two thousand ten entry was really dated twenty. The Eleven is fine not really twenty eleven sound looking up details of two thousand ten and they asked the man from the smurfs will specifically the guy who wrote the smurfs song to to write an entry and that's how he got finicky. Oh if I remember that national selection process correctly they had multiple genres of that song happening and that's the one that one okay. Oh Oh yeah it was it was a dark time and they've they've since brought things internal and that's been a very smart choice this yeah yeah like in two thousand thirteen like they were just like all right. We're going to send one of our biggest pop stars and yeah if a nuke had not qualified. I would not be surprised if the other Glenn just been like you know what we're just going to sit out for a while and we'll come back when we feel like it and fortunately that did not happen for them will nuke did well and then the common limits did really well yeah. They really adopted sort of the country vibe for the most part. two thousand fifteen was a little bit of bobble. Get a drink j yeah that that that was just a lot of unfortunate staging and just a song that didn't really go anywhere but pretty successful since switching to that and I think part of it might be the Voice of Holland Holland the epicenter of the voice phenomenon and that's what's been fueling so much your vision this decade like so many people are our voice alumni and that may be the secret sauce here. That was a wonderful thumbnail sketch of that just sort of the history the contest so let's talk about Rotterdam like super about Rotterdam because I've been there before. I'm just excited that I know I have a little bit of a mental map of that city excellent. Although I have not been in the area where the Rotterdam Ahoy is so I'm very excited about that well how how big of a city is Rotterdam just in terms of population elation size and that sort of a deal. We were hosting Eurovision in America for some reason I if everybody got sick. It was it was it would be as though we had gotten down to. Los Angeles. You know a very large city one of our largest and Detroit okay at least just in terms of like Rotterdam. Is I WANNA say the second largest city in the Netherlands is it's a port city. It is a major shipping center and it's also like really branded itself as a hub for innovation and for architecture because in the forties win World War Two happened a bunch of it got bombed and then they just rebuilt in fancy metal and glass. It's okay and like it's great because you walk around and you have all this really really interesting architecture like the market hall but then you walk down the street and you'll have city hall with one of the last remaining in buildings. There's this one cathedral standing after all the bombing. I enjoyed visiting Amsterdam when I was over in the Netherlands and the Amsterdam is great and very touristy Christie and feels very Boston in me and that's walkable and there's all sorts of old history stuff but like Rotterdam had this this very technical vibe that I really liked to do one thing I have loved about this process that the Dutch had been very open. Everybody's bid books are out there so if you look at the Rotary Bid Book and they have that in both Dutch and English the venue is a- as we've discussed the Rotterdam Ahoy it has a MAC capacity of sixteen thousand people probably less for your vision just because they're probably not going to do in the round staging but who knows that then and you has hosted the the as for MTV European Music Awards in Nineteen ninety-seven in two thousand sixteen those are pretty big also hosted junior eurovision in two thousand Avenue K. and then just looking through other parts of the bid book administrative events are going to be happening at Rotterdam City Hall again. That's like one of the buildings in town possible tag lines although all of the all of these are like gist general enough to be believable yeah official slogan anything is possible make it happen and then the the the wondering the bid was Rotterdam for real. Maybe we need to come up with a slogan generators to go with the Eurovision Lyrics Generator Eurovision the vision twenty twenty hands nothing after that just hands anyways one other part of the proposal. I thought was very interesting thing and I kind of hope. It comes to fruition even though it feels like a little bit of a traffic nightmare is for the opening ceremony they WANNA take the asthma's bridge and they WANNA put the gold carpet on that and they have made very clearly. The golden carpet is GonNa be made of recycled material I was just very pleased looking through this bid book they've thought through everything except for like a couple of things in there a couple of things really yeah you have time. I don't think about that yeah like I think the one. TVD that jumped out to me was the economic impact surveys and stuff like well yeah. They're not going to figure out all of the INS. It's an out of that particular research project in a preliminary stage but guy told me it makes sense that they were like now that they know that they're going to be hosting but we'll get you those details details by the end of the week. It was a very nice bid book. I see when they won it. Don't like most of the city's having lived through multiple bid books had thought through this in a very careful way but like Rotterdam really really felt like they wanted this and they had really thought through all the little details so let's talk accommodations. I am slightly kicking myself for not seeing that leak in preemptively booking one of the IRBY's. I'd had my eye on yeah because when I woke up and the the official the officials had happened it was America time which meant that it's been kind oh a feeding frenzy or at least it was because there were not hotels and Airbnb were available but very ridiculous prices that said sure I'll leave if my house for a week for you know thousand bucks a night yeah I saw one listing. That was oh a comfortable studio for six and it's like I come that went to our Mike on what earth yeah it can be comfortable or it can house six people. I don't think they can happen simultaneously like one one thing that that greatly delighted me was there was a number of houseboats available which felt very Dutch. I was entirely on board with that. Those what if I don't like sleeping on a boat yeah yeah. It was starting starting to look like that that was going to be the only option at that point because everybody in Europe had the time advantage has the announcing came out at lunchtime. I'm for them which is still like sleepy time for us in the states but yeah like don't get discouraged. Multiple blocks are going to open up. People are going to soften on those airbnb being berates. It's not over yet. It is just begun yeah but also it's worth noting it's super easy to get around and other ones. They have trains. It's great the Hag Agah Delft Breda Dordrecht are all reasonably accessible community for the contest is Daphne could be an option. There are definitely going to have the trains.

"Hey Mike we are a pair of Americans trying to fathom the depths of the division song contest and this week will be going overboard talking about our hosts country than other lands. Have you worked in all of the nautical puns at this should really pile on all of the things now just in case the Netherlands decides that that despite being in the Rotterdam Ahoy we are not going to talk about boats at all because Portugal did that two years ago that we can hedge our bets and if they decide to the different themes like unity or togetherness where we're all all covered and we can just blast full steam on that there we go yeah. We're we're learning folks so we'll figure it out. We will once the official theme is dropped. We will be right here to pick it up. Yes in the meantime Happy Eurovision new. Your bike happy Eurovision New Year it's such similar to labor similar to Labor Aberdeen the United States welcoming the new academic year September first of the New Year of year and boy. We have so many announcements that have happened in the two weeks since we last recorded yes as we've alluded to. Rotterdam was selected as the host city the venue will be Rotterdam Ahoy for next year's contest which will be held on May twelfth for the first semi-final May fourteenth for the second semi-final and may sixteenth for the grand final and if you are extremely online like I am and when you spend way too much time on twitter you notice in your your vision column on Tweet deck that somebody will go. Hey they already have a Rotterdam twenty twenty page. If you look on the country page and apparently that was a big oopsy and the biggest of ABC's the doing so well I saw that immediately went over to the country entry page to to verify for my with my own eyes that yes is page did exist in no there was not a mistake twenty twenty. If you enter that into the euro also hoops and then like ten minutes later there was but the euro starter was different which meant it was probably a Russia yeah I just feel so bad for the person who was responsible for this happening just because it's at as somebody who maintains our website and does does a lot of content management stuff in my day to day sometimes sometimes those scheduler plug ins. Just don't work the way that you intend for them to like. Here's my theory on what happened just kind of based on win. The leak happened. I notice about lunchtime Chicago time which would be the end of the day in Geneva and and I could just sort of see this person the person responsible for this being like all right. I'm going to save this as a draft to publish at eleven fifty nine central time on Friday Friday and possibly that the central time that was selected was US central time rather than Central European time then didn't double check the date. Yeah I just think it was just kind of a confluence of errors that caused it to publish early. I mean if not like I've worked in website deployment before and I've accidentally push the button before you're supposed to we made that mistake. We're humans yeah and Kudos to them to kind of try to do a rush job to fix it but as as you were mentioning whereas the fake aac Maastricht web pages didn't have the rate structure and it just had like placeholder images instead of an official venue image and nice try but like really we kinda missed out some of the details but I love that the like put out like their history of the line and it's totally revisionist and just completely ignored yeah yeah mistakes happen and I mean at least it wasn't the case of everybody getting really excited for Rotterdam and it did end up being Maastricht because I could see that being we. We ended that the worst yeah at this point. Any Song is eligible delegates nine one which if you look at the news lately. It's mostly just said hey all the nations are stirring up their selection processes or things like Sweden's having a write in candidates. I guess we didn't have the writing camp every week. They make all of the pop music in the world. This is Tuesday for them. Yes but yeah if you are interested in getting in on the songwriting process the Swiss processes assesses open and it's open to anyone you don't have to be of Swiss residency to submit your entry so get on that folks. We'd love to hear it house our mailbag looking it's been a few weeks. It's getting pretty full. Yes and people reached out to US regarding the last couple of episodes. Patrick wrote in to ask about the prioritization grids that we you had mentioned in our UK. Gut Rehab episode. We talked about using these grids when we're doing our own rankings for the semifinals and the finals and what resources we use for that. I Google the phrase beverly rile random there. Is this great website from John. Aquino this partisan. The grid is a tool from beverly rylance supposed to be like a job hunting. What color is your parachute survey deal. I've just retrofit for Eurovision purposes same exactly the same yes we. I think you introduce me to that and I'd like to that. I could break a lot of decisions into their individual sub parts but I also wanted to be able to do in a very random sort of way so that I'm not over weighing later options compared to earlier options and so what this allows me plop in a big list of things and that just serves me up to the time and I pick which one I just smash the button which I like more until I run out of things to smash. I use the same sort of grid. I tend not to use the randomized iced one partly because the randomized doesn't offer back option in case you choose wrong and I do like seeing the full layout of the grid just because maybe maybe this is my owned by is speaking but sometimes I want to go back and be like Oh really I put that one above the other one which that and that's usually where I end up getting wrong in my prediction certain we'll have links to both of the grid types that we use in our show notes. It really is a handy tool. I think the random one is better when you're dealing with twenty six twenty seven options to choose from yeah like trying to get that great onto a single page is kind of over to the random on the Biz that I wanNa have everything everything on one page. Yeah you can sort of do it with eighteen or nineteen entries if you kind of retool the zoom on the site but it's a little tiny so the other tech that we've used on our site. Derek wrote in to let us know that he was going back through some older episodes from last season and came across the pond where we talked about creating the lyric generator. He said it was a great experience trying to get something semi coherent That's always the goal. What what I came up with isn't too long but I hope you all get a kick out of it. Here is the song that Derek came up with giggling. Cover feels like there's no limit your is never say goodbye hide in the sky remembering for every day duplicating down the Rockefeller streets collusion 'cause I'm tired of being sweet moved by the way you look at me. Guys like a star guiding blindfold. You're not alone seeking for hugh life for you and be darkness for the little silence sees cry. Free wishes like thunder lessig while but we're not to stay. I think that works so I'm just so happy that are beautiful. Child is getting us. Oh yes and we do have that on our homepage right now at your what dot com so give it a whirl as soon as you could send it to Switzerland and you babe be representing Switzerland neck percents go. What the Hell is this. Why are we getting to plead. That's sad said like I found that the view that the best way to kind of work with it is to kind of cut a prime the pump and think in a Eurovision Song Way and like an I wish or and I want sort of a deal bill and then let the machine finished the rest. Yes Derek also tipped us off to another sort of a I we computer five hundred Eurovision songs and this is what it spat out called Bluejeans and bloody tears by a sweaty machines and featuring a it's our cohen from Israel. It turned out really well. It has a really cute animation. We'll have it linked to. The video in the show. Notes is fun. You guys so it's fun. It's fun giving a neural net like fifty years worth of material and just watch it. Go Derrick thank you for sending that are way. Taylor wrote in to let us know while she was studying abroad in Russia this summer she was hearing a lot of your vision and your vision adjacent songs in the wild but she also had these strange experience of of hearing Levinas perfect life just in a food court in a mall in Moscow as you do. That sounds like the correct environmental live the videos perfect. Life is just like the background soundtrack to food I mean if that's your legacy. That's a pretty nice one to have some other songs that she's heard apparently siren song is everywhere which is no surprise only tear-drops. Denmark's winning entry from twenty thirteen Mohammadi's hello from this year's ears mel fest and like a whole bunch of this year's a national final participants. That's not a big surprise. The one that really kind of struck me as was Mary be Chris Creeds and tree for Finland back in twenty thirteen which that seems kind of like a deep cut yeah so it's like I'm glad that's still getting play even at a gingerbread festival in Vladimir Neat what if spotify premade platelets but good on you yeah yeah bread festival in vitamin so like I was trying to think of what the US and log if that would be Komo a moment like this just kind of playing randomly on the radio today which seems really bizarrely out of play it would be something like that or whatever Justin Guarini hit was like playing at my local fluff marshmallow spread festival. Okay yeah has that happened. Are you speaking from experience or I'm not speaking from experience but we do have we do have a marshmallow fluff. Festival apparently early made here Taylor. Thank you for letting us know about that and then from our last episode Richard took issue with a comment that was made about how the audience audience doesn't know how to applaud. He writes F. Y. I. Clapping rhythmically isn't a really way of showing special enthusiasm and maybe in other cultures and has nothing to do with not knowing how to applaud I've also heard it here in the US. When the audience wants an encore and yeah that's totally fair err response and as someone from the states where we give a standing ovation to everything we are probably the last people people to judge other people's applause styles in so many different ways yeah so it's it's possible that comment was coming from a place of just like no? Don't be like us but I don't want to suppose anything for him but thank you for the comment as always we want. I want you to call us on our nonsense when it pops up the main topic for this week is looking at our host country of the Netherlands before we we get into Rotterdam proper thought it would be kind of fun to go through the history of the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest. They were one of the original participants and they won in nineteen fifty. Seven with cory broke ins net house tune..

"Rotterdam film festival has been showcasing the challenging the fresh on the unconventional treasures cinema has to offer. It has a reputation for being the most serious and of film this year is no exception. It's director says people are hungry for something which is different from the ordinary something that gives them the question rather than the answer. Joining me now from Rotterdam is a film critic Tara Judah welcome back to multiple twenty four. Tara. Everyone says it's a serious film festival. What does that mean? That's a great question. I mean it serious insofar as they take films seriously. But actually, I think there's a lot of good humor in good fun in the festival as well. This year, there's been a lot in terms of the themes around feeling so it's kind of hashtag feel I f f and the idea of that is to kind of look into how we relate to human stories through the feelings that cinema can give us absence has been a really. A big theme. So there's been a low around kind of spy themes surveillance. What happens when the state's watching knew when things on there who stories don't get told whose voices a quietened? So this year the theme really has been I guess serious. But also playful I would say there's a playful element to the festival as well. Is there any intention that any of these films our ever intended for the mainstreamers is this the Sigler celebration of of of the margins of cinema. Actually, I think the festival does really well is straddled both of those extremes. So they do have the kind of big films in the sense of Brady Quebec's new Volks looks which stars Natalie Portman, you know, there's the new Clinton e film highlife, which has got Robert Patterson, and it said, they're all some of those big headline films here. But it does also look very much to the God. And I think what the festival does very well is to champion the God. So it's moving from cinema as a mainstream form of entertainment all the way through. To it's kind of more moving image, gallery installation. And that's another thing the festival does is that it also has installations alongside the film program. What I found fascinating is it this film festival has been around for nearly fifty years. How is it managed to sustain so long? I think that's a great question. And I think some of these festivals reading they really do have a legacy and part of that is to do with the fact that they all building and identity Rotterdam really does have its own identity. Like, you say there is something about how seriously it takes cinema. But also how much it's willing to champion films from all across the world. So even though, you know, there's been, you know, obviously American films in the mix as well as fantastic remaining film. I do not care if we go down in history as Burian, and that's a really amazing title, but you know, the films that you wouldn't necessarily get to see in other places, and I think a lot of programs critics and film fans know that if they come to wrote to them they going to want to something that they might not see elsewhere. So one thing tower that if you didn't get a chance to go to them, but you fancied. Enjoying something from the festival. What would you what would you recommend we try and help out? So I would say there's a couple of films that are just absolutely must not MRs. I've I've just seen a fantastic Swedish film called CoCo de coca. And this is a kind of fairy tale nightmare, which I really do think. We'll get picked up internationally. So I think that will be a chance to see it. And it's all about the kind of cycles of grief, and how they descend into the innocence of hell, it's absolutely hilarious. But also, really frightening mixes Joan brilliantly, and I'd say definitely lookout for that. Tyrod you to thank you very much. Indeed for joining us own wanna cool twenty four and that's all we have time for today's program. Many thanks to our produces Ben Ryland and Daniel rate are set to page Reynolds Miley, Evans, a mother Lieber and thanks marriage today, David Stevens, and to all guests to after the headlines as more music on the way and Ryland with the continental shift. "It i find it odd an interesting and funny that it has to be this i don't know this long drawnout explanation on why why somebody would need the right to defend themselves and i and i love this too this is a clip actually the john birch society put this up and it was a it was a clip in and the main clip was it was from nineteen seventy 77 and the clip said gun crime is not stopped by guncontrol gun crime it's not just a gun control how simple is this how simple as this so easy i mean he can't get any simple or but but there by gosh there are people that uh guns do oh i'm sorry guns do not cause crime people caused crime issues now guns gun control will not help gun crime does not get solved with gun control in i know you just baffling melt my head just exploded in the netherlands soonhoon guns were bands who and after that happened the dick crime rates started going up in the police had to come up with a way to fight crime back so what did they start doing they started stopping people who were driving cars that they looked like they couldn't afford and they started confiscating property from people who who couldn't prove how they paid for it right the assumption being if you can't prove how you paid for this them you must have gotten it through some illgotten gain right and that's the policy now in rotterdam that's the police chief of rotterdam's policy if somebody looks like they have something that's the beyond their billeted a pay for we pull a over he says we confiscate rolex watches all the time a bag of i just can't even it you can't if you couldn't have paid for it i mean that regardless of its a gift or you prove how you paid for by confiscated the ruling us they confiscated in in 2016 the city of rotterdam confiscated eleven point five million euros in money and goods from citizens that couldn't prove how they paid for oh my gosh now i thought that when i first read that i thought will thank god that can happen here in the united states of america and then i remembered a man asset forefeiture has a little that pesky little thing they pass the ability to do just man that is that.

"So you know now here's the thing don't listen to all the talking heads all right everybody has an opinion including me don't listen the thing you want to listen to is the stock market itself because if it wants to go down and whether irrationally or irrationally it doesn't matter in fact is a quote in and try to remember who said it but the quote is the market can remain irrational far longer than you can remain solvent okay so don't ever forget that the market can keep going down even though it's everything else looks fine okay so sometimes the market knows something that we don't see right now so just because i'm saying it's not time to act or do anything about it does not mean that we won't come to the conclusion that may be something is rotten in rotterdam and we need to do something about it okay so this right now feels like a normal garden variety kind of a of a correction and the numbers are bigger because the markets up so high but if you look at the percentages thousand point drop that was like not even in the top 20 biggest rob days of the stock market so it doesn't even qualify yet so i think everybody should remain calm for now and you know like i said stay tuned this this place and i'll tell you what our thinking is also you know if you'd like you can subscribe to my market alert email and it's free and you can go to our website money matters dot net to do that and it's the same website the same market alert email that we sent out in november of two thousand seven we say was time to sell and people who followed our direction at that time stayed out of the stock market for all of two thousand in aid and didn't buy back in until june of two thousand nine.

"More sandy type events and that means that that storm surge barrier has paid for itself many times over so why hasn't construction started on a storm surge barrier then well that's a very good question a construction on storm surge beria has not been done in new york city even though such barriers are in use and have been for decades all over europe in london in rotterdam in saint petersburg int now in venice and are being built in asia and in this country have existed for decades in new bedford providence in stamford and recently uh a a very of the size of what we're talking about was just completed in four and a half years in louisiana china and another one's now being planned for galveston houston but there hasn't been a focus on the local level to build a storm surge baria the concept was that we should respond on a local level to build projects that can be built quickly without cooperation uh by the state government this concept was deeply flawed again local various don't protect you from regional impacts a local barre is that try to protect you from both a rise and storm surge and not only expensive they are almost impossible to build in a densely urban environment and i'm not effective so what do you think will happen i think what will happen is that uh some of these projects will be built a locally and that's okay it's good to have a layer defence in fact we advocate at layer defense will you have a regional storm surge barrier that protect you from twenty five to thirty foot searches and.
