The First Time God Prompted Pastor and Author Lucas Miles

"At a very young age, I felt like the lord called me in a ministry. I was probably 15, 16 years old. After my freshman year of high school and, you know, I think we have time to unpack the story. So I'll tell you, 'cause it's powerful. I was at this youth event. And I'm sitting there with this guy's preaching and thousand kids, one of these things that, you know, a high school thing at a college campus over the summer. And he says, you know what? It was a Wednesday night. He says, I'm going to pray right now that God puts a name on your heart. And when you get home, that you're supposed to call this person and tell them about Jesus. You know, and I mean, I'd never had like God speak to me or, you know, I mean, I was in church, I read the Bible, but I'm sitting there in this girl's name pops in my head. I didn't know her that well. We had a class together. She was very kind of alternative. You know, back then, it was goth was the thing. You know, that's how I would describe her. She was kind of goth. And dressed in all black, the whole deal. And I get home. And I'm 15. I'm still scared of girls. I mean, I'm kind of still scared of girls today, but at that age, especially. And I call her and, you know, didn't have cell phones. It's the rotary house phone type of deal. And I said, hey, I said, I know this is going to seem weird. And I knew she was an atheist. She was very open about being an atheist. I said, I know it's going to seem weird, but I was at this thing and this guy said this and your name popped in my head and I just want to know if there's any I can pray for you about. You know, I stumbled through that somehow. And she just gets quiet. She goes, what day was that? And I can hear like a little bit of a quiver in her voice. And I said, it was Wednesday. She just loses it. And, you know, I don't know what to do. You know, I got somebody the opposite sex on the line crying, and I have no idea how to fix it right now. And I said, I said, what's going on? She goes, what time? And I said, I don't know, there's probably 8 30. And it's just silence. And finally, I go, what's going on? And she goes, we got to call it 8 30, Wednesday night, that my brother killed himself and jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge.

House Budget Chairman Signifies the Stupidity Governing Our Country

"I want to share with you a clip. This was recorded at a rotary club meeting back in September of 2021. This is the chairman of the House budget committee who seems to think that all you have to do if you need money is go to the Treasury Department and say we need money and they write a check and it's all okay because you know what? It's just monopoly money. Who cares, right? Watch. We don't have the balance of. We don't like the bank or the novel question. We created one of the channels on Monday everybody else plays the game. I'm laughing but I shouldn't laugh. I should really be crying, okay? That is the chair. The chairman of the House budget committee, saying we are like the banker in monopoly. We create the money, everybody else just plays the game with it. That is the level folks of stupidity, we have this representative from Kentucky, a Democrat who thinks he can print money. This is the stupidity that's governing our country. And this is the reason why you are paying more at the gas pumps than you'll continue to pay more. This is why it costs more to feed your family. We won't even get into the baby formula supply shortage, which is a total mess that should have been dealt with far earlier on. We have stupid people in Washington, D.C., that affect really big policies.

"Not having to have as many guards on staff. America. Some people did leave crawfordsville with a contract in hand. But not too many. And in the end, only 18 rotary jails were built in the U.S., mostly all in the Midwest. Pretty quickly though, the new owners found that there were some downsides to a rotary jail. So really the bad thing about the rotary mechanism is that it's heavy. So when you're moving it and it gains a little momentum, it can be difficult to stop the mechanism. If the jail caught on fire, for example, each inmate would need to be let out one by one, which it's not super great. There was also very little ventilation and lighting in there. But that is not all. Listeners, this gets a little grizzly. During the first 25 years of operations of the jail, about 49% of our inmates were arrested for being drunk. So with alcohol not being as regulated as it is now, you definitely had a bigger chance of passing out. So inmates would fall asleep on the ground with their arms or legs through the bars and then a guard would have to rotate it to let somebody else in. So unfortunately we did have both amputations and broken limbs happen at our jail. Britney told us that another rotary jail saved a little more money by just having less bars and putting the bars farther apart. And it was wide enough for a man's head to fit through. And one of the inmates did have his skull crushed. So they quit rotating the jails. Yeah. Eventually, most towns quit using the jails altogether. And one after another, the rotary jails were torn down. But the one in crawfordsville, Indiana, has been preserved. Along with a lot of its history, history including that of the inmates that were held in this terrifying contraption. So our probably most infamous inmate would be John coffee and he was actually executed at the jail in 1885 for murder. In 1885, John coffee was 23 years old. And we did a lot of jobs around town. One of them was working on the farm of James and Elizabeth McMullen. On January 7th, 1885, the McMullen's house was set on fire, and the couple was found dead inside. Coffee was the prime suspect. And the authorities tracked him down. He was wearing the farm owners close and wandering a back road close to where the farm had burned down. So when they brought coffee and they coaxed several confessions out of him until they got all the information that was wanted. And he was convicted by a judge that thought that there was a crime wave going through profitable. So he wanted to cut down on it by having a public execution, scaring people straight. John coffee was sentenced to death by hanging, and spent the next 9 months in one of the wedge shaped cells. This was back when the rotary mechanism was still being used. The sheriff at the time gave out apparently around 200 tickets. One account suggests that he actually sold tickets to the execution. And in October of 1885, a little afternoon, a crowd gathered, and the execution didn't go very well. They had to try to execute him three times. So the first two times the rope broke and he fell. And then the third time the rope went tight and hard enough around his throat, his neck didn't break when he was dropped from the gallows and it took 9 minutes for his heart stopped beating and they cut.

"Grew up or where you have now. Hi there, my name is Kenneth rusk. I grew up in west central Indiana near a smallest city called crawfordsville, cardio has a number of things that it's famous for, but I think that one of the more unique things in crawfordville is that it is the location of the only remaining operating rotary jail. Now these jails were found all across the Midwest and the idea was that the jail cells were situated sort of like a cylinder, which could be spun within the interior of the jail. That way guards would only have to interact with one cell at a time. To this day, most of them have been torn down, only four of them remain standing. And the one in crawfordville is the only one that still spins. To this day, you can go there and the apparatus that actually spins the cells, the crank, that all still works. I think it's a unique thing for a small city like cartilage to have, something that really is truly one of a kind. Thank you for the call Kenneth. I do have to say that the idea of a rotating jail feels distinctly wrong. Anyway, to get a better sense of how this jail actually worked and know a little bit more about its history, we called the rotary jail in crawfordsville, Indiana. And spoke with Brittany Turpin. I've been working at the gel for 8 years. And that's a very interesting place. Britney is the executive director of the Montgomery county cultural foundation. The organization responsible for taking care of the rotary jail in crawfordsville. The rotary gel was built in 1881, it began operation 1882 and served as the Montgomery county jail for 91 years until 1973. If you look at the exterior, you wouldn't think it was a jail. It was designed to look like a nice two story Victorian home. And that's because it was a house. There was a residence in the front half of the building, and the rotating jail was in the back. I think sometimes it's difficult for people to understand that it wasn't just a sheriff's headquarters. His family lived there. So there were children in the house, his wife lived there, if his wife wanted to be the patron, then she also received a paycheck from the county for cooking for the inmates and taking care of things in the jail. Imagine coming home to your partner and saying, I got a new job and a new place for us to stay, it's the town's jail. The jail rotates so that there are just men stuck in inescapable traps in the walls of our House. Okie doke, sleep tight, everybody. Ugh, jeez. The person behind this disturbing idea was William H Brown. He was a native of Indiana. And after fighting in the Civil War, he worked as an architect a designer and an inventor. And he lived during what some refer to as the golden age of invention. It was the industrial revolution. There was tons of economic growth. People and cities had money to spend. And so there were all these inventors out there trying to supply people with things to buy. Things that would improve their quality of life. And William H Brown had his own invention to improve the world. In 1881, Brown was granted the patent for the rotating jail. The internal rotary mechanism rotates all of the cells on a two tier cell block. So there are 8 cells on the first floor 8 cells on the second floor. Imagine like a pie on top of a pie on top of a lazy Susan. And everything rotates clockwise or counterclockwise with a hand crank located on the first floor. This rotary jail in crawfordsville was one of the first to be built. So it was kind of like a model home. People came from around the country to see if maybe they should buy one of these revolving jails for their own town. And its main selling point was this. The biggest pro would really be the ability to save.

"That's really clever. That looks obviously you, man. Someday, yeah. Where's a stash though? That stories about this. I'm going to say, okay, one important part is I had to put my story on the back. It's not the same story you see now because now it's diluted and it isn't really about me anymore. So, but the original story was I was a four time loser before I realized I was in the wrong game. And that's what started it and then I just talk about my transformation in prison and how I ended up making bread. And people loved it so much that they wanted me to do all these things. They wanted me to speak to all these different groups. So I started doing the rotary club circuit in 2009. Did every rotary club because they all want you to run that you got to do them all. And it's just exposure and exposure and exposure and it just promoted the bread. It promoted a good idea and a good community vibe and then all the employees that I hired that were extra balanced and all that stuff was natural. It wasn't like it was still a march through this marketing move. No, it wasn't like that. It was like, makes sense. These are some good guys. Some of these are some good people. You got to pick the right one. How could you have imagined going through that period before obviously the success here? How could you imagine that that was getting you ready for this? You know what I mean? You're going through shit. And the whole time, obviously looking back, you're like, that was getting me ready to do this. Yeah. In fact, we talk about the dreams in prison and stuff. I used to have nightmares where I'd wake up sweating and just go wow. I'm okay. I'm going to get out..

"So let's talk first about censorship. So Dennis and prager you did a great job. They're Google lawsuit. They were way ahead of the curve by the way. They tried to warn everyone that Google was going to shut everyone up. And people took them seriously, but not enough people, and then next thing you know, Donald Trump gets kicked off YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, all in one day, and it's kind of, I told you so, right, Dennis, it was one of those things. And we kind of have a separate government that exists in our country, one that we elect and one that is technocratic and one that is headquartered in Silicon Valley and in Menlo Park. So I could get into that form of censorship. I could also talk about the former censorship that exists on college campuses, whether it be the administration or antifa, and all that. But the type of censorship that I think is actually most helpful to talk about is one that every single person in this room participated, which is when we shut ourselves up. Self censorship has become the biggest form and most powerful form of censorship. Now, it's not only we don't shut ourselves up because we always want to, it's largely because we're afraid of the price or the cost associated with speaking up. And a great example of this is when people say Charlie, what can I do? And I asked them, I say, at work or with your Friends, are you allowed to express your political or religious or moral beliefs? And a vast majority of the people that listen to my show say no. I say, well, then you are not free. I said, let's just start there. You know, instead of you running for governor or whatever, what you're all great things and say, why don't you next time at your lunch break, tell the people around you how you view the world like Charlie, I can't do that. I mean, I'll lose my job, I'll be ridiculed. I'll be marked. I'll be smeared. So, of course you will be. So why won't you do it? And that's really the issue, isn't it? And this has been one of the genius moves to the left is that they are able to hold hostage our decadence to use a great word. Our lifestyle our luxury over us. We have a great life here in America and conservatives know they have a great life. And it's actually this very interesting thing. It's this inverse relationship, and I love Dennis thoughts on this. Because conservatives are more thankful to be an American and thankful for what they have. I think we're also more afraid to lose

"Robert, and it's always a good time to talk beer. Bruce Campbell in for Pat Walsh. Tony Owens is my guest. He's checking back in, Tony. Thanks so much for being on with us. I got to tell you I kind of did. This is a trick to you. I want to spread this. You know, we talked to you earlier. I want to spread out. Give you plenty of time to sample plenty of beers and just see how loosened up you got over the course of the evening. Have you been sampling still? Oh, yeah. Yeah, I'm I'm increasing. The alcohol content goes on, Bruce, you know, going into stronger beers Did I just listened to last six segment as you get Damien numbers so you can give it to profess tickets? Well, sounds like a beer drinker. Kind of guy. He does sound like a beer drinker. Kind of guy, Shall we? Yeah, we'll We'll have to, uh I did not get his number, but I'm sure he'll call back in. So Yeah. Um, let's well, let's start off with that Then Now that we're there, where do you get tickets to the 13th annual Rockland Brew fest, which is coming up on October 2nd. Yeah, Bruce, they can go online to go to Rockland brew fest dot com. Yeah, There's a green button right in the middle of the screen. And you push that takes you over to the upright $45 a ticket. And, uh, $55 for the door. See, kind of want to get him ahead of time online because, like I said before, if we sell out, we sell out. Yeah, you can't have a max capacity that even though It's an outdoor event. Now there's several questions. I want to ask you, but but right off the bat this I didn't get to ask you the last time we talked, which is over an hour ago, But, um This is not just about beer. This is about the South Plaster Rotary Club, doing some good things for the community and beyond. So what? What kind of fundraising does this brew fest do And what do you do with those funds? Tony? What does the South Plaster Rotary Club? Do with the money raised from this event. Yeah, we we We have the help possible Rotary Foundation went to five. We'll see three corporations so all donations and that can be written off and what we do with that money that comes in there. Is that we give it out to communities. So we do things, uh, kind of examples. We take third graders fishing, Tommy, I think I think I think we enjoy that as much as the kids do, because they get a kick out of it, But they have to earn the right to go fishing, So they've got to keep their grades up. And, uh, you know, be good in school, and that's that's always a fun, great fun program. There's about 50 kids out there. And then we give scholarships to local schools and one of the areas that we're kind of proud of it. There's victory High School which incineration continuation high school in Rockland and, Yeah, those kids don't get the love that they that they need to get and they're they're probably more appreciative than the other kids and we give them scholarships and They take it on and go to Sierra College or vocational school. Some some have gone on to college. So you know, you've got to got to spread the love in the community, and that's what we try to do. So, um then we can. Then we take eight grader stem to the aerospace museum. Right, Uh, freedom. Freedom to the to the ER. If you ever been out there, that's a really, really cool place to go. Oh, yeah, we are. Yeah. Yeah, And then we then we do, uh, some of the feed my starving Children, mobile packs. We have a free little library. We do Christmas baskets for disadvantaged kids and families and Christmas time And then we also do some international stuff. I mean, I don't know if you familiar with are you? I know you are with rotary back. Polio eradicated polio worldwide, but that's that's, uh, that's polio that does that, or I'm sorry, rotary that does right and then we then had at the club itself. We sponsor a orphan. They just San Felipe, Mexico. Yeah, we give scholarships and we've got given computers and we've given TVs. We've done things to, uh, enhance their lives as well. So it's it's the money that we raise. Goes a long way and goes out to the community. And this is the the not only primary but so fundraiser that the South Plaster Rotary Club does is this brew annual brew fest, and it's It's Johnson Spring View Park. And, uh, few 1000 happy beer drinkers get out their sample beers from from mostly in the Sacramento area. Am I correct? They're almost there. Primarily local craft brews. Is that correct? Pretty much pretty much local. Yeah, what we do is we got we have we have our local Bruce and there if you haven't been out there are we have a lot of microbrews springing up out there. And, you know, I'm talk. Talk about giving love they You know how there are time during Covid. So they're excited to get out Yahoo in the community again kind of kind of interesting some of our brewers because this time of year You know, to the summer they run out of beer. Oh, we're basically you know, we're going around saying, what do you got? So we don't know exactly what all the beers that we're going to get. You know, we know the brewers we're going to get We don't know what they're going to have for us. Yeah. Well, that'll be real nice. Yeah, Yeah, There's a lot of new brewers out there, too. Okay, when I When I started looking at the list, there's brewers I've never heard of. So there's there's some guys that got out there and started their business and Through throughout all this covid everything they were able to jump start and get out there. So it's pretty cool before to CNN. The Tony Owens from Rotary Club of South Plaster is our guest on the Pat Walsh Show on Kfbk and October. 2nd is the date for the Rockland Brew Fest 13th annual Rockland Brew Fest, which is a great fundraiser for the Rotary Foundation. Tony you You brought it up the C word covid. Um I'm going to assume there are certain covid protocols. That must be taken to hold an event like this. Yeah. I mean, we've We've actually helped a special meetings on this because you know, everybody's health and well being as far top concern, including our own club members or guests are volunteers that are out there. The Brewers, So basically, the things we're going to do is we're asking anybody who's had covid flowers 14 days of coming or shown signs of it, You know, please, you know, don't come in. Um well, Credit year ticket will take care of you, but we'll be back June 2nd and next year for brew fest, 2000 and 22. So there you go, then, uh, you know we're going to we're going to spread the brewers out a little bit more. Um, we're going to keep the entire event outside. We used to use the community center for silent auction and that kind of stuff and we're not going to do any inside stuff this year and we've got we have we have found a sponsor for hand sanitizer. Nice sponsoring hand sanitizer. There we go. Exactly. Yeah, Then we're gonna have we're going to boxes. The mask its master the front gates of somebody's wants to have a mask and then bring one. You know we're gonna We want people to feel comfortable. You know, we're gonna We're going to expect people to be adults and, you know, and kind of good, courteous to everybody. But.

I had songs for an album. So they put out the album propaganda man With the help of sometimes collaborator gary tanin. Who assisted me with mixing and mastering the album. "And these are the power tools that should show up in the D I wires workshop. We're just about at the end of our list here. I've only got a couple of more for you are going to move away from the big bulk, heavy duty things into a couple of finesse tools. Finesse tools number one. This one is a rotary tool. And in fact, I'm just going to call it a rotary tool kit. Uh, Dremel is probably the company that has made handheld rotary tool kits. Uh, most popular and most famous. Rotary tool is a basically a wand that spins very much like a well like a Like a drill gun spins a bit At the end, However, it's much more delicate and it spins that are much, much higher speed than a drill gun does because these rotary tools are made for grinding cutting. Polishing. They do literally. It's like 100 tools in one, and that's why it is so valuable. You would think that when you first look at that's like a hobby kit. Well, you know a lot of D I wire spent a lot of time doing just that. But there are also some really, really practical uses to it when it comes to your home in general. Whether it is doing some sanding or polishing work in a very, very tight area, whether you're having to cut off and shave off a little piece of metal somewhere, you name it. I mean, I could go on and on, but I'm just going to tell you the rotary tool kit. Uh, the sound that is most familiar to you. That will relate to a rotary tool kit is Yeah, being it Unfortunately in the dentist's office, I've got one right here. Yeah, no. Oh, okay, but it's not your teeth, okay? It's your house, and it doesn't care. So rotary Tool kit. I like the Dremel. You can get a a Dremel I think of three model 3000 or 4000. I don't forget which one the whole kid about $69, and then there are like endless accessories to it. So whether somebody is a hobbyist or just being able to handle little things around the house. The other item on that also, uh, first popularized by Dremel, But now everybody and their brother makes one of these that is an oscillating tool..

I used to work for the dod also and from his accent. I could tell he was not a native american. We got to talking and he was an interesting person. A very kind nice person so i invited him to talk at my rotary club in falls church and he agreed and i helped him work out a powerpoint presentation he gave a talk at the rotary club but during one meeting and he also gave a talk at the thomas jefferson high school for science and technology interact club and he's really opened up with the high school students and had a very compelling and interesting story about his work in afghanistan for supporting our troops so needless to say you got to know him. He introduced you to other family members. I i'm assuming and At some point you got involved in trying to help them help. Other family members come to the. Us is that right correct.

U.S. Military Commander in Afghanistan Talks to Taliban Almost Daily

"Meanwhile speaking of the active duty. Us military the white house is speeding. Up the evacuations. Out of afghanistan now with eight days left officially until the august thirty one troop withdrawal deadline. Ministration says in the past twenty four hours. Nearly eleven thousand people have been evacuated from kabul about forty eight thousand have been airlifted out since august. The fourteenth crowds desperate to leave afghanistan. Remain outside the airport gates where it's bedlam. Pentagon says u. s. military. Commanders are in contact with the taliban. Today we learned about another mission to rescue stranded americans outside the airport. The commanders on the ground certainly had the authorities they need to pursue opportunities to bring people in and one of the means that their disposal is of course rotary aircraft helicopters. And and we have done that on a couple of occasions. I certainly wouldn't rule out that we would do it again if it if it was the best way. So for the record a couple of extractions thus far. Meanwhile there's increasing pressure on biden to extend that august thirty one deadline for troop withdrawal while he's left the door open for that possibility leaders in the taliban have declared that a red line of their own today. The white house was asked about the taliban resistance. And the president's plans we are in talks with the taliban on a daily basis through both political and security channels decided whether he is going to need more time yawn august thirty first taking this day by day. And we'll make determinations as we go. We believe that we have time between now and the thirty first to get out any american who wants to get out and just tonight members of the house. California expressed his doubts that the evacuation mission will indeed be accomplished by the end of august.

"Welcome sarah thank you so much lisa. I'm so grateful to be. Here is such a delight. I am super excited. We know that you are quote maker with lots of experience. We know that you specialize in traditional but also with this gorgeous modern touch. Can you talk a bit about how that started. I read that nineteen. Seventy nine was a big year for you in the beginning of your quilting career. Can you talk about more about that. In one thousand nine hundred nine. I made my first quilt. That i quilt was made in an era when we didn't have rotary cutters and a mats and big rulers. I made this quilt with cardboard and a pencil and some scissors and also machine. And i used fabric that i had leftover from garments that i had made i was sitting in the sewing room or the guest room in my house. My mother came in and she said what are you doing. And i said oh. I'm making a quilt. And she said why. And i said i'm not really sure exactly why but i really feel like i need to make this quayle field. This is my mission. This summer was a summer between years in college. I was determined. And so i made this quilt pieced. It all together and sandwich did with that lovely nineteen seventy-nine polyester batting and hand quilted. It took back school with me in the fall. I didn't really know at that time. When i was making this quilt. I didn't really know all the stories about quilting in my family. But i still felt this. Push this creative encouragement from somewhere. To make this quilt.

"Everything so. I'm in content communication with our hospitals with our caretakers with our health department and the university and those are some of the things we were discussing once again. You know. that's what people are thinking about. do we need to have capacity restrictions. How do we address this. And the point is even if we put in mask mandate the individuals that didn't get a vaccine aren't gonna put a mask on. They didn't put it on before when it was a mandate that doesn't mean it's going to change their behavior and now they're going to put on a mask so i'm not sure that's the solution. The typical people that are going to wear masks of the ones that already vaccinated. So how do we address this issue. I'm also president of a rotary called rotary club of community action against human trafficking and we applied for a grant but Incentivizes people to get the vaccine so the one population that i am addressing in a different capacity are survivors of human trafficking or domestic abuse or sexual violence. And what we put for our action plan was one. They don't want to be identified so we were able to get health care workers where these individuals can come in. do not have to give their. I d do not have to show any type of identification. They can put any name on the sheet that they want because all mainly what the healthcare workers have to show us. How many vaccines were used. Not necessarily who got so. That's what we told them they can do that. They don't have to show id. They don't have to identify themselves. The second thing is a one and done like johnson johnson shot. They're not gonna come back for a second shot so we had to make sure we got him. You get one and then you're done so you talk about vaccine hesitancy so we have the grant put in for incentive plan to give them fifty dollars amazon gift cards. So that's what we did and you know that we were able to get several vaccinated on friday last week and we're going to get a few more thursday so making it anonymous so they don't have to. Id themselves making it a one and done kind of shot so you don't have to worry about getting second shot and incentivizing them. Those three things have worked for this particular population and that might work for other populations. So that's what we need to think about. How do we get them. Vaccinated the point as vaccinating them and it also impacts health insurance premiums as these individuals that are not vaccinated if they get the virus one. it's easily transmissible. And if they end up in the hospital they're staying there longer so that that impacts all of our premiums.

Some of them could be fixed by is really growing. Yeah and the golden day so it's much less invasive chair so this has been really great. I'm there at the hospital every day. I've been no. I'm not assigned every day. I go there just to encourage the parents and say listen this oldham health. So don't be discouraged with the medical science heavies. Days is not that big a deal. Sure open surgery but the doctors are well skilled in dealing with situations. Come up so chances are they can handle just about anything which is true. It is amazing how much they can handle and how well the children are doing today. Especially compared to win. You were first born greg. I find it amazing that you go to the hospital every day to encourage the parents. That's so lovely. its version. Yeah it is a passion. Can you share with me. Maybe one of the most rewarding experiences you've had while volunteering with the rotary club of actually. There's one little boy who's just so much energy and some positive and everybody loves him in walks around with his thumbs up all the time off and it's really great to see him. So i took his picture when he had his operation and it came back a few months later and i showed him this picture and he was all excited. You showed his parents. And i was kind of neat. An we had this other girl who is fifteen years old. This young lady was supposed to be operated on for a cleft lip when she was three but when they went operate her if found out that she had a heart issue so they couldn't operate so when she was fifteen they fixed both at the same time now. This girl went through school. Bean harassed and tortured and picked on. Because so it's just really terrible now. She's absolutely gorgeous. She is so happy. It's just an amazing turnaround to see this young lady. It makes the whole thing whereas while oh absolutely when you see a transformation like that and somebody who had been bullied and maybe lacked confidence and then they have this surgery but who knew she had a heart defect as well. What kind of heart surgery did she have reviews do you think do change his physical appearance and mental chartered so too radical changes big difference difference and it's almost like you're a mentor to these people. Isn't it in some cases yes allah. Yeah i love that. That's just so amazing and now this hospital is not even in your town. You have to travel a bit to get there. Don't you notice close close. Oh well good. That does make it a little bit easier for you to go on a daily basis. That's great well by now. I'm sure some of my listeners. Want to donate to your organization. Can you tell us how they could make a donation. There's two as they can either donate to our club or they can donate directly to gift of light by just going online and look up and give international as to be capable of international gift. Life is different than give international and if they go to the rotary club website. The gift of life program is listed on there. But what i'll do is. I'll make sure that this is in my show in for those of you who don't know what show notes are. That's the description of the show so there will be a link there to the gift of life program with the rotary club. Share your own clubs. Information with me to mike than i can share that as well. I should do that. That would be great. Sounds like you've not only had a lot of years to your life but a lot of quality your life giving advice for somebody who's much younger than you who might also have a heart defect persevere. Premier was just what happened to me. I never paid much attention to it. I mean i guess. I identified myself with it but i try not to let control and pretty much do whatever i wanna do. I always found ways. And i think anybody with a situation similar to mind will find ways to accomplish what they want to accomplish regardless of anything as long as you're determined to have a good life it's not that difficult for me anyway. "I am excited today. Because you've got a guest on. This is a guess as a little out of the box. From who've you brought on before. And i'm really excited that rebecca salsas here and What what are you guys talking about today. yes so. I'm really excited. That rebecca was able to join us today. Rebecca is the executive director of the josephine county Library foundation and is really an integral part. The library there in just being county. Where grants pass. Where i live is located. And i just wanted to spend some time talking with rebecca about the value that libraries bring to our community and to our lives and so rebecca. Thank you so much for being here. Absolutely thank you for having me ma. It's our pleasure our pleasure so We tell us just a little bit about how long you've been working with the library and What your position entails right now so i have been through. Many different transitions At our library. And i've been working about eight years back. When the library was a nonprofit i was doing the fundraising and now i've transitioned over to the library foundation and i'm not the executive director and my job is to help raise funds to support special programs and things that are outside of the library. District's budget very nice. Very nice and and i know there's a long history there with what happened in josephine county with the library system Do you want to just give a brief overview of that of what happened to it. Seems like almost twenty years ago now with libraries being defended and then what what happened in the community after that absolutely so in two thousand and eight the libraries were closed and e funded and the community really rallied. They wanted to have a library in their communities so it was a grassroots efforts and they raced funds and was able to st- originally started out of you know checking out. Books are lending out books in their vehicles in a parking lot and then they were able to raise enough money to open up. The libraries and tons of work was involved with that and our library system. Which has four branches. One in grants pass one in williams one out in the ohio valley and one out of wolf creek operated as a nonprofit for ten years so phenomenal work. I'm and it was really exciting to see a community so passionate and really finding the value of libraries in a community because there there weren't a whole lot of libraries being run as nonprofits at that time. We're there no. Our library system is kind of like a unicorn very unique. We had over three hundred volunteers at one time. Doing all of that work which is just amazing. And even within it becoming a nonprofit. There were still three over three hundred volunteers that were checking in books. Checking out books doing all of that work. In fact we have about two hundred fifty volunteers. That still are doing that. Work today. so wonderful i my. My sister has has volunteered to the library. Here for years before covid. Kind of shut down the the day to day operations of checking in and out books but What what. I wanted to kind of touch on i. I remember this is this is my embarrassing story is probably sixteen. Seventeen years ago. I was much younger and definitely not as wise and i was standing in line at a community event here in jackson county and we were at the library and i had made an offhand comment about. Why do people need libraries anymore. and what. i didn't realize. I was standing right behind. One of the board members for the jackson county library and she took me to task for about five minutes explaining the value of libraries to the community. So i would love for you to just take a minute And i'm gonna humbly ask why our library still relevant today. It's a great question and we hear it quite often. Actually you know not. Everyone has the same resources in today's world and libraries are the technology access points for so many people and we see that even more now that we've endured through a pandemic and libraries as a whole. There's just so much more than book. Repositories the cultural and community centers. And our library here in grants pass even attracts more foot traffic then the local post office so when you think about all those long lines in the post office and how busy it always. Is your library here. Josephine community library is is busier than that. And really we service as venues for community meetings host workshops from anything of you wanna learn about coating to changing a tire and i could also take a task for a long time about the importance of libraries. But just a couple numbers to run by. You is each month. More than twenty. Two thousand items are checked out. And they're in homes within our community and in a county where at least a third of our residents don't have computer or internet access at home patrons lock more than fifteen thousand computer sessions in a year and have nearly forty three thousand personal devices. Connect to the library's wifi so it is a library is so much more than just books in building. It's really an important piece of the community where people can connect and grow. I just can't agree more promptly. What got me back into. The library was have having a daughter. She's six now. You know taking her back to the library to have those experiences in the children's roman being able to kind of just see the books touch the books and kind of just have that that feel of what a library feels like is just phenomenal. I know you. There's just so many Children's programs happening at the library is as well absolutely and we have families with kids of all ages coming to participate. Whether it's our summer reading program we have sensory story times the dolly parton imagination library program or registering kits through josephine county to receive free books. Mail to them Every month and and that that is just such a fantastic program. That was a partnership. I think with The library in rotary there in josephine county. If i'm correct but That is really phenomenal. That is any any family can sign up for it. Any child and from birth to five years old every month. They get a new book in the mail. Mail to them. Yeah it's it's wonderful and we have over two thousand kids currently receiving books every month in josephine county through that program and and thanks to all for the rotary groups in grants pass and and the many funders of that program. It's been great to to get that many books in the hands of kids in our in our

"Maintain that vapor liquid balance in the column in that directly impacts the column efficiency within these columns. Any disruption can take possibly hours to work. Its way through the column so you wanna make sure that valve is operating correctly. You could get around that by adding extra energy to the system or time to process but good control valve release saves the user money and so. Those are some hydrocarbon examples. Even within your process there may be others like ed Valve in a crafter so this may be critical to catalyst regeneration of maintaining creek temperature and that impacts efficiency of that conversion those are some examples excellent and so the beds a great segue my next question and because it's come the the main theme of why we're here today is so if you're an operator and your new unit maybe doing or whatever it is what should use her look for when they're selecting a rotary control out. Yeah it as a user really got diamond to the construction of that valve. There's price three big factors that i consider as a user in selecting evaluating. You will look for that. Has low friction low loss motion. And then you want to account for the dynamic torque so if we look at the friction within the valve. It's really as a of the drive train. Those components that translate the torque from the actuator to that final control. Element that baller that a lot of that friction can come from the shaft bearings those bearing support shaft against the pressure. Drop you want that. Low friction high wear resistant material as a designer of rotary control valve one limit the contact stress maximize life. Another big. one within the drive. Train is packing region of the packing or those malleable rings. Normally a hydrocarbon services seemed pdf graphite and the purposes to prevent leakage to atmosphere around shout. And that's important but tends to be a trade off of leakage and torque as you compress that packing reduce leakage but you also increased torso. You need to account for that. Last one within friction is the seating forces. This is a big one as that ball. Disk a seat closed. There's some friction and be proportional to shut off as in to say that's a tradeoff You tend to get better. Shut off you may have higher friction and this results in what we call breakout work. That's large component of actuator sizing and that's also why vows with double or triple offsets have advantages that when they come out of that seat they lose contact quickly and reduce.

He completed his bs degree and graduate coursework in mechanical engineering from iowa state university and is the rotary technologist and in recent automation solutions. So with that. I believe we have the right people. So jason wade. How you guys doing today doing pretty good. I'm doing well. Thank you excellent. So i i really wanna thank you for joining us for this discussion on. This critical topic is because what i'm told refineries petrochemical plants have a few vows. Think that's correct just this discussion. We are looking at a particular valve which is rotary control vows. Now for those. That may not be familiar with this type of ou- explain what a rotary control bell is and what it's this sure. Their two primary types of control valves rotarian globe made up of three basic components valve and actuator in a position under the control. Element inside of the valve is used to control a specific process variable. That could be like flow rates pressures or temperatures. The actuator serves as a muscle that moves the control element and that leaves. The digital position are acting as the brains that tells the actuator when the control element needs to move there are few defining characteristics linked to rotary control. Valves the control element in a rotary valve is connected to a shaft that rotates and takes ninety degrees of rotation to go from the closed position to its full open position so the control and it could be a disc from a butterfly valve. Where a ball from a ball valve rotary valves are typically compact in size when compared to glow valves which means they have less weight and space take space and so that provides some benefits when thinking about the piping layout and the challenges associated with installation and removal and they typically have higher flow capacities which means the end user can use smaller sized rotary valves leading to a more economical solution. So the purpose of controls they typically regulate flow and its primary function is to maintain target flow rate or set point rotary control valves are intended to at varying degrees of travel not just open or closed there typically sized to maintain the set point at mid travel around forty five degrees open changing process conditions can cause the troll element to migrate away from this initial travel position and it's this change in vowel travel allows the to hold at set points for example. You'll something happens. Downstream of the controlled out that causes the floor to change from one hundred. Sef h two ninety than the bible opens up allows more flow to pass to bring the flow rate back to its set point of one hundred sef age art. And then i'm going to use a house it different than in.

Seattle Mariners CEO Kevin Mather under fire for comments, releases statement

"Go badly for that team. Generally it does otherwise. That would not be talking about that team. Because they never do anything right. They never do anything good. So if I'm talking about the Mariners, and I'm talking about their president and their CEO, Kevin Mather. He probably did something really stupid. And then he and they are probably about to get wrecked for it. And if I'm talking about the president and the CEO, talking to the Bellevue Breakfast, Rotary Club It's gonna go horribly for everybody, and that's pretty much the result of him running his yap to the Rotarians earlier this month. You see, he was speaking to the breakfast Rotary Club on February 5th. Those comments became public yesterday and immediately went viral. So why is that? It's because, he said, the quiet part out loud and said so on pretty much every single topic imaginable. Like you know, the speech to the Rotary Club where nobody ever says anything noteworthy? You know what's an all timer when you've got a guy like that, having to issue a statement, which includes the following line, and I quote I've been on the phone most of the day today, apologizing to the many people I have insulted, hurt or disappointed in speaking at a recent online event. Unquote at a boy Ste. Hot champ. How the hell could anything that happens at the Rotary Club go so horribly that you have to spend a day apologizing to all the people they even salted and hurt or disappointed. I mean, how dumb would you have to be? How bad would that speech have to be to warrant an apology like that? A statement like that from the CEO of an MLB team answer. Really, really dumb. And a really horrible speech. The hell was this guy thinking anyway? Clearly he wasn't my man's mouth was simply on autopilot. Check out what he said about that stuff about the fact that he admitted there was no way that he was going to call it their top prospects last season. Not because they weren't good enough, but because the team wanted to manipulate this service time if our major league team had had a Cupid outbreak. Or, you know injuries and we had to call people up from the taxi squad. We were a little short on players because there was no chance you were going to see these young players at T Mobile part. We weren't going to put him on the 40 man roster. We weren't going to start the service time clock. There were all kinds of reasons that if we would have had injury problems or a covert outbreak You might have seen my big tummy out there in left field. You would not have seen our young players are prospects playing in T Mobile Park. Check this dude out. I'm gonna gloss over the fact that a grown ass man An adult just used the phrase my big tummy. In public. I mean, normally, that'd be one of the more offensive things in a speech like that doesn't even crack the top 10 here. Honestly, the fact that he's openly admitting to being happy to putting a lesser version of his own team on the field in order to manipulate service time isn't even the most egregious a fence from this dope. I mean, we already know that goes on. We already know that a bunch of major league teams do that. But this moron is the only one admitting it in public and going on record with it. Except he wasn't done. He had more. Like saying that Kyle Seager is quote overpaid and that this would be his last year with the team. Like that's cool. I guess I'm not saying the Seeker has been lighting the world on fire. But maybe you don't hop on a zoom call with the Bellevue Rotary Club and put one of your key players on blast like that. And he wasn't done not by a long shot because he had some thoughts that he wanted to get off his chest about the second ranked prospect in the organization, Julio Rodriguez. Julio Rodriguez has got a personality bigger than all of you combined. He is he is loud he is his English is not tremendous. Good Take, bro. Good. Take Got a huge personality bigger than all of you. But his English is not tremendous. Yeah, I'm sure that's not the first time you've said that and I guarantee it won't be the last. But first he had more than you want to say about Rodriguez, because why merely irritate Why merely irritate one of your best prospects when you can go in on him and really piss him off. Everybody, says 2021. He won't be here till 2022 or 2023. Fantastic kid. Really big on social media. He loves toe. Get out in front. He loves the Mariners. That's a tremendous approach. Right? Everybody says we'll be calling this guy this year. The hell we will maybe next year. And you know what? Maybe even the year after that. Make sure we keep on sucking before he gets here. Why bring him up? You might help us. I love that he chases that with quote. Ah, fantastic kid. Really big on social
