"Let me repeat that. New York is suffering more drastically than any other state. By far as of right now there has been tragically. Three hundred sixty thousand confirmed cases of coronavirus virus in New York and over twenty three thousand deaths by the time. I am recording this. That is in a state of nineteen million people. Now let's do some compare and contrast in Florida a state of over twenty one million people and a large a large elderly population. There has been only about fifty thousand confirmed cases in only about twenty two hundred deaths so twenty to one hundred deaths in Florida versus over twenty three thousand deaths in the state of New York and Florida is more populous and Texas state with twenty nine million people has had about fifty four thousand cases with only about fifteen hundred deaths again. Fifteen hundred deaths versus twenty three thousand deaths in New York and these states have also had much less restrictive lockdowns. Now there is no doubt that New York is different. It is more densely populated a lot more public transportation. That's much more used than in places like Florida and New York are places like Florida and taxes And I especially true of course in in New York City where most of its cases are but cannot really be the only reason it couldn't possibly be that maybe leadership has fumbled that. Maybe they haven't done as good of a job as the media has said that they are doing. So let's review some facts about Cuomo state and examine. Why possibly they have run into so much trouble. We've talked about this in the past. It bears repeating so the state of New York was facing a budget crisis before all of this happened back in November. The New York Post reported that New York face a six point one billion hole in their budget for this year and Cuomo's planning on making cuts to Medicaid rates for hospitals and nursing homes. They fail to present a real plan. Criticized Dave Free Del of the Citizens Budget Commission. A fiscal watchdog group. They've known about this for a long time but the plan they did present is really one part. Gimmick he added his analysis shows. The state was already in trouble after pushing off a one point. Seven BILLION DOLLAR MEDICAID BILL IN MARCH Two thousand nineteen into Into two thousand twenty which grew into the four billion dollars according to an article in the nation. A left-wing commentary magazine. Obviously I don't agree with a lot of what they write but they can be pretty good at holding Democrats accountable. This is an article by Ross Bark. Entitled Cuomo Helped Get New York into this mess. Governor Cuomo has long mismanaged the budget and the Medicaid Program program in the state and has reduced the size of hospitals. Here's some excerpts from the article in which he argues that some of the budgetary abyss has been the CUOMO administration's own making postponing Medicaid payments and failing in the past iron out inefficiencies. Like the state's pain Medicaid costs for relatively wealthy. Private hospitals are relatively wealthy private hospitals. That don't need the aid in the first place. What's more this has lost. More than twenty thousand hospital beds over the last twenty years Cuomo who has governed for almost half that period CUOMO has governed since two thousand eleven. Never advocated for any kind of expansion of hospital beds until last month he now says New York needs one hundred. Ten thousand says this is a couple months ago more than double the current capacity. He has never been a forceful advocate for keeping hospitals open in fact he is empowered bureaucrats who have argued aggressively to shudder them in two thousand..

"Oh back now on fought off side. Jj last bit there was a quote here that I wanted to read about the US men because I can already feel you know people getting angry about you know the idea. that that I believe in which is that these are the games were like because I saw on twitter all the rage from people who were just like why are they doing to stop this enough with the off from the back and Reggie can and leave it to like a twenty one year old kid to have like the quote to me that really resonates in sums it up. He said that's exactly. That's that's actually the big point that people are failing to grasp if you can't abandon the concept when things get hard because that way we won't improve in two years. We're going to be in the same spot when things get tough like that. When you come in against the Mexico team that is pressing the heck check out of you? You have to learn how to play out. Unfortunately that's going to come with mistakes and that's that's exactly how I felt like these are like for it to possibly pay off for you later. You've got to go through the rough patches now so good work Reggie Cannon Yep fair and I'm not saying stop it but I'm also saying don't take away your agency. Don't take away your decision making thank skills you know when it's on you know when it's not other things happening around the world. Jj Lots of European qualifying England just they they've now gone through. To how many years has it been since they lost a qualifying match. Oh it's a long ten years. I think it's a decade UNBELIEV- watching them. What a weird game today Kosovo they go down in the first minute which you know this this this bizarre Gut Punch to start out and then they come right back where he sterling in the Eighth Harry Kane then shortly after that next thing you know at halftime it's five one and then Kosovo comeback with two more to kind of like a game that I had mentally abandoned right then all of a sudden it's five three with a lot of time left and you're like Oh? If coastal can get one more more here this could get fascinating but England would see it out as you would expect the ones missed a penalty wasn't that much grit clever defending in that second half from England to kind of Oh back in on Kosovo war relentless to be fair to them. We'll talk more about them. A little bit later but England still haven't really figured out that midfield for me. What's key we know for them is regime sterling? He is absolutely the heartbeat of the team because the second goal was so of his is making the ball comes into him Andrew with his back to goal and he spins the defender and bears down on that Kossovo defense slips it off to hurricane and who buries it now is a great finish by candle could be wrong. That's all starling. He's the dynamo of this site. It's amazing how the Narrative on starring England has changed. He went what two years without scoring in a goal he can't. I'm not going to do your English what you're angry sterling raw if you're playing primarily but he can't won't finish Foreign Kalindi just can't find the net which is just not true and definitely the the call manager actually spoke about a debt I afterwards and said that once upon a time starting wasn't the most Polish finisher but pep Guardiola has improved that part of his game whatever he's key for them now he is the the claim to create a fulcrum in that dot site and if on an England fan and I'm I'm watching today and you know they they now have like we're talking about waves leaves and generations of talent coming through for England you've now kind of identified the general core Sterling Cain I guess you would say Harry Maguire. I feel like you can you can kind of see this but I'm a fan and I'm watching England today and I'm now seeing Jaden Sanchia enter enter the mix and thinking. Oh my God like here's this. This is like found money like this player that we're not even really accustomed to because he's not playing in our league so we you know it's not like he's really on the forefront of England fans minds and all the son he shows up and it's like Oh my God. This is amazing. How good might we be? This kid is still a baby I agree and I concur with all of that but I just keep thinking that the things that have caught them in the past controlling the midfield being in possession of the ball they made a great start against Croatia. Don't forget in that World Cup semifinal all ebbed away because slowly but shorts that were ground down by moderate midfield and I just don't see that player yet. I don't think deck and Rice's DOT player but he he I think he's definitely going to start there at the base for England and I think they have to figure out who goes with them. It was Ross Bark and Henderson today in that midfield three and I'm not sure that's going to call it when they come up against the good teams but bought. There's a good chance they won't meet a really top team until the do your champships next well. It isn't does not a good chance it. It is the facts that they will go into a tournament having not been tested. Let's leave. Let's keep it to just European Championships for SEC who are the other European nations that you could sit here with confidence and say they're definitely better than England. I think France are better than England. I think Spain I think spanner still better than a for those very reasons. I just talked about control of the midfield being able to snow there. There's loads of people can throw it back in my face and say well. This is winning the Midfield Cutler. You know that important anymore. Jj maybe not doc. Maybe if you're a team that can counter attack. Maybe it's not but yeah I'd never off the gym. Although although I would right off the Germans off what about the Dutch they're in a bit of their saucy them and then there are both in the midst of Ah Yeah of a bit of a C- a Comeback Ingram have been kind of their thereabouts particularly with that World Cup run whereas the Dutch have been off the radar for for two tournaments and Kumon has has seemed to reimburse you know reinvigorate them a little bit they they were good against the against Germany in that game. That was a fun game Andrew for two it was I know what if it wasn't for the weirdest time bowl you'll have seen in a long time on Frankie Diong where the ball is in the air deflected up in the air he can't see it and it lands on his arm and the the referee gives a penalty. If it wasn't for that that's four one I feel as if the to put a gloss on it I thought the Dutch were excellent. The Malan goal was absolutely fantastic arsenal reject by the way where where he comes off the bench and Rinaldini is running breaking again the Dutch paid on the brick by the way a lot which was interesting and when I'll just breaks down the left hand side to Pi sorry to get the ball rolls in brilliant run from Winnenden Andrew he just fix it with the outside of his booth and leaves it at a lovely height for from Atlanta to volley at home to Dutch there so weird. There are weird things about the Dutch like look at the same time like hey you know what Virgil van Dyke there is Frankie Diong. There's matteis delinked yeah. There are those players but there's also like this kind of weird hybrid where there's Ryan bobbling their score twice tonight I know but you would have expected the Dutch team would not be returning to him at this point. There's daily blend still in the side. There's a rejuvenated Memphis pie during this weird hodgepodge of own wanted toys that have all come together under Kumon enough some how found a rhythm they're not perfect input. I'd fancy them. If it came to a semi final against England of a major tournament I still fancy the more than I would England Belgium Belgium. Belgium are the best team the word right now my view Belgium and Brazil okay the two of them well. What what a insult to France? What else does France have to do to get your respect? Yeah I suppose I tore Franson there by just by the sheer weight of of quality in their squad yeah okay but I really think for the way Belgium play and France don't play France have maybe better personnel across forty players but I kind of prefer watching Belgium should have lost a Japan they really should have. I love watching Japan. No International Football is fun. I don't care what anyone says. It's yeah yeah it has been what it seemed like. You had other things that you wanted to get off your chest. No no I just a little bit about the Germans I've talked about the team against North against obviously in the dodgers game and then I saw them against Northern Ireland and yet they they were better in the second half against North Artha was Neil Lennon halftime but just look into the squad Andrew. It's it's diminished. It's it's so diminished. Now I know there was the purge that Yogi Lou had of of players after the World Cup of experienced players were homos was out on Muller was out but but you know Gabri is lively upfront is he a top end striker Nacho about that Royce's an excellent player. I will hang my the hat on Royce but you know he's a lot of injuries team. Over earner. I expected team will varner in these kinda games to thrive. I expected them to thrive or even the World Cup last year to be fair as well and for a guy who has five goals already in the Bundesliga this season just not not there. It's they're they're in a period of similar transition as to maybe what the Dutch were in a few years ago now. I don't know if Germany will fall to the sort of deaths that the Netherlands fell to they probably probably won't right but like heading into next summer no. I don't know that we'll be talking about the the Germans is our favorite. No even maybe a top three or so afraid of them because we bad German team at Euro Ninety six win the whole tournament so it's always in our minds that we can't can't write them off yeah so we won't speaking of which we should also include Portugal in this conversation. Cristiano Renaldo scored four today in a win against Lithuania so he continues to just be such a force and he scored no goals against twenty different countries while which is yeah you wonder if there can be one last run from Portugal with I actually Aldo combined with this like they catch this wave of Rinaldo still at the the end of his prime mixed with Joe Felix Brunner Fernandez some of these young players at the beginning of theirs and if if it can kind of like if they can peak at the same time Portugal could still be a really scary team. I think we've been disrespectful onto counselor. I'm going to say my count. I it's forty different countries entries Ronaldo scored against four sounds better yeah does in you is raw sounds right. I'm not good with numbers. They knew even then that was wrong in my head it's crazy. It's crazy Zima second of all. Why aren't we talking about the reigning European champions and the reigning nations league holders as a real top team in the world? Why aren't we including them? In this in this mix brought them up I know but I felt as if when you were asking me who can who's better than England or WHO's in that in that mold of top teams in Europe Europe the fact that I didn't mention them as pretty disrespectful. You're right. You're going to get the tail end of Renaldo with Felix and the Bernardo Silva's absolutely absolutely I'm sure we're leaving somebody out. That will offend p Italy. We haven't even mentioned Italy I know but they're not exactly in the toughest selfish group not that that should matter really because is no easy games in international football that is false that is a blatant falsehood and I wanna meet the person who believes that at the Faroe Islands Play Games all right okay. you have anything else or can I do stuff here. And obviously. Quieted crowley. I'd like to talk as a victim. Joseph Crowley setup. Queens judiciary. Okay. I know Ross barking. Told us screener you wanted to talk about the college cheating scandal. You're going to talk about that. As well as well. Make your point really concisely. Okay. Okay. Okay. A symptom. The college. Yes cheating scandal. Much problem that you've been addressing attack? Which is that money buys everything. Okay. I am a victim of another system which money buys everything the family courts in queens weird, but I can speak to clean where judges are appointed. By the democratic machine is no independent oversight. Ability. Over a million dollars illegal deplete poverty court. Okay. And I'd like to ask when somebody that has that has. Been shining in the day or so and you're currently in the investigation. On the scandal. That was yesterday. I'd like to know when accountability will be. You know, when we will see some accountability, some transparency in the court in the family court system in a foreclosure court system systems that are run by the democratic machine in queens. Joyce thank you very much for your call. We really appreciate it who wants to address any part of that. So sarah. Yeah. So I obviously can't speak directly to this case or courtroom. But but the problems that she's speaking to are very very real for one. There's no transparency and the judiciary at all. It's barely covered by the press as well, something the appeal has been looking into expanding our coverage of is actually the judiciary. His you. You've probably all had this experience you go and vote and you have to check off a bunch of judges. You cannot find information on who they are why you would vote for one or the other why they're there. I mean, it's so undemocratic and dysfunctional and fines and fees in the court system are also a massive problem. There are municipalities across the United States. I mean, this was famously the case in Ferguson where police departments are actually funded by collecting finding feeds from people, which of course, incentivizes the police to come up with ways to collect those fines and fees. Whether that's point people over whether that's charging people in court. Whether or not they've been found guilty of anything, and what this does is increased poverty, obviously, create fear and unfairness in the Justice system. And it's it's just incredibly destructive to two communities. And then I would say further that the coalition's that we've seen get built around the country to replace prosecutors who were incredibly punitive we've seen this from Chicago to Texas. I mean, this is a national trend. These are exactly the coalition. We would want to see in building a new progressive left. These are coalition of labor unions people of color, poor people's advocates all sorts of left-wing organizations because he's unfair in punitive Justice systems tear communities apart on every level. Whether it's increasing poverty through fines and fees or putting people in prison for long lengths of time those coalitions that have come together around prosecutor elections are I think going to start coming together. More and more around you dish elections. And in fact, there was a DS a judge elected in Texas. Who has been talking a lot about the choices that judges make and how we can make better more progressive choices in the courtroom. How this supposedly neutral position is actually highly political, and we can do it a lot better. So those are all essential points. He's talking. Thank you very much. Let's let's go to a question here in the green space. Hello there. Hi, my name is Lisa I'm from Manhattan. I want to return to the fifty thousand foot level about democratic socialism and say, you know, I think that there has been obviously some pushback against the concept. I heard Rahm Emanuel talking about how it's a gift to the Republicans to put all this really left wing stuff out there, and it's difficult as a Cold War baby myself. I mean, I remember the bay of pigs. I wonder if we're all a little bit under a hangover of the Cold War. And that when we hear the word, socialism, we freak out. So why is it that you guys have not given some vision? Of the real life examples of vision of what countries have succeeded with this model, and can you give some of those examples so that people can gravitate towards something instead of simply away from something and get away from the fear in our society. Thank you. So what's the what's a country that would be the closest model to what you might be aiming for anyone? Sara, go ahead. Take up all the space. Yeah. So we often point to the Nordic countries, that's sort of an interim model, right? And I know that in some ways out son satisfying to people because obviously the Nordic countries are not some sort of post capitalist utopia and are themselves capitalist societies, but with serious social safety nets and larger on capitol. So, you know, this is currently closer to what we're aiming for that know, I can't give you a perfect model of the perfect society. I don't think liberals could either, you know, I think in many ways socialists are the only people asked to describe a perfect utopia with no bumps in the road along the way because we're proposing something new and fair enough. So I think one way to think about it is something those countries are doing correctly that we want to do more is take things off the market that don't belong there. I might say Deka modify things, but another way to say, it would simply be that something like healthcare or something like saving us all from dying in a global warming, apocalypse, those should not be left up to the vagaries of the market. And so we actually have a lot of models for how that can be done. And that's what we're looking at right now, those are all the practical policies we're talking about. And I think we're gonna continue sort of at the fifty thousand feet level with our next caller Peter in the Bronx online seven Peter you're on WNYC. Thank you for calling in. Yes. The word socialism used to have a particular meaning is an economic system which had to do with collective ownership of the means of production and distribution. It has become such an elastic plastic concept for the Republicans Medicare socialism. Four. Ernie. Although the last comment may change this. Scandinavian countries were socialists. Even though they call themselves, social democratic and even know they have lower corporate taxes in better. Forbes said it's a better place to do business in the United States. I have no idea. What I don't know. Why you guys don't call yourself social Democrats because that seems to be what you are. Although the last common seems to point to some utopian notions, which I worry very much about because it's basically a concentration of power in the government, Peter I'm going to leave it there and get a response, we'll lead and Sean. You know, who else made the same comment to me off the I don't think he's set it off the record. So I think I can say this. We had we had Rutger bregman on the show yesterday. The guy who famously spoke back to the people at Davos and spoke to Tucker Carlson in that Fox News interview and wrote the book. I'm trying to remember the name of the book utopia for realists. So just giving record bregman his do Dutch. And I guess he call himself social democrat because he said to me off the air. Why why does the American progressives insist on calling themselves democratic socialists when it such difficult branding here? Why don't they just call themselves? Social Democrats will lead into came with your DASA cut. Well, I think that's what people are calling it. And so even in Europe, the countries that are social democracies the parties that enact those policies are often called the socialist party of Sweden. The socialist party of France, the socialist party of Spain like these are these are the names of the parties, even in those countries. So that's when I started off I was saying sometimes these terms are little not just loosen the US, but loosen Europe the other thing I'd like to say is that even at south by south west. There was a German woman who asked this question on why don't the Democrats just defend democratic socialism and social democracy, as what Scandinavia already has why does Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris and Cory Booker stand up and applaud at the state of the union when Trump says America will never be a socialist country. Why are they give into that? And AFC's response was because Democrats don't believe in social democracy that it's there are lots of Democrats who don't support these kinds of things like Medicare for all our free college, increasingly. You know, the center of energy is moving and Democrats are coming around to it. But again, I think that there's this. There's this play happening where some of these terms are are loose and at the end of the day like a lot of the program that the United States did in the nineteen thirties. Nineteen forties. The Bill you could call those social democratic democratic socialist programs, and those are the very same programs that are under attack today at the end of the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King would say often that basically this country did have a social democracy for white male workers for a lot of this country. And what this country has never had is a multi racial social democracy where everyone has a right to free college. And that kind of brings me to the articles that will lead you, and Sean you wrote in the last few months with I think overlapping themes, Sean, yours in these times suggests that progressives in twenty twenty focus on primary. Ing centrist Democrats in blue district. Six more than trying to flip purple districts. Can you explain? Yeah. I'm sorry. I was I missed my chance to talk about Rahm Emanuel and said. No, I shouldn't for the sake of your FCC. Suffice to say if anyone knows how to help Republicans. It's certainly brought manual. I think that like what what we're really interested in doing is, you know. What what has changed the most the Democratic Party in the last few months has been I think the most exciting is, you know, leaders of the next generation the Democratic Party almost all women of color leaders leaders like Presley, Illinois, Omar. Cossio cortes. Deb whole Lonzo Jonah Hayes have fundamentally changed the Democratic Party in all of these women were elected in safe democratic district replacing. You know, in some cases, quite liberal, and other cases, more moderate Democrats. And that that is fundamentally changed the way that we talk about politics in America. A lot of these conversations about race and gender. They have sort of been discussed in happy hours. And in academic articles. Forums are now being full front and center in the Democratic Party. And we still have a lot of Democrats who are sort of go along to get along in D plus fifteen to thirty districts. They have zero chance of ever losing a general election to Republican. And yet why are they not leading on important issues that matter to the base, and I think that there's an increasing increasing age divide in.
