"Only 24 hour News Station Co. Mo news 1000 FM 97 7. The Covid picture might seem pretty grim right now, but a local health experts says it will get better. Very soon. As long as we're careful. I'm Ryan Harris with this como extra I've spent a lot of time during the pandemic. Looking at the projections from Uw's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and one that stands out is that we could save nearly 1600 lives between now in December, 1st. If 95% of us wear a mask indoors and in crowds, the other eye opening projection is for excess deaths. Hi h means Dr Ali Mark Dad sums them up as a NRA corded covid deaths or other deaths that only happened because of covid like deaths because of delayed health care, but also accounting for fewer deaths from things like car crashes. Even with those Washington's projected excess deaths are more than 15,000 by December 1st compared to nearly 9400 from just reported covid deaths. It's very important to get access mortality because you will underestimate Covid 19. In many places. We have to admit that people are more afraid and pay attention to the number of mortality does not number of infections. People pay attention to hospitalization, But today in the United States would scares everybody. So many Like dying from the disease. Even though Dr Mok Dad does paint a brighter picture, he tells me this pandemic will continue to be with us for a while, 2022. We will still have covid 19. Although much lower in terms of mortality and hospitalization and countries were investigation is very hard in countries where vaccination levels are very low. You will see a lot of cases and of course, more mortality simply because people are not immune, and they will get it and they will be infected and they will die. Unfortunately from it So this would be for us for a long time. The fact that we don't live in an island by ourselves and we shut down this island. People are going to come to the United States and bring Covid 19 was eventually That's how Covid 19 arrived to the U. S. And too many countries, However, our long range projections for the United States we keep declining all the way through December January, we'll have a little bit of rice but not a major search. So we're presenting a little bit in please. And it will go down all the weight and spring unless, of course. We have a new variant that's in the state violence circulating elsewhere and coming to the U. S court produced within the United States borders, But Dr Mark Dad tells me that doesn't mean a break for hospitals in the winter, with fewer patients from Covid, but more from the flu because many people last year did not have any fluid did not see the virus. So they we have less immunity for it coming this winter, So it's possible our hospitals even without Covid 19 will have a little bit more a surgeon hospitalization. Simply for respiratory viruses that we avoided last year by winning and masking staying at, especially if it's under age of to have never been outside their home. Now they are and they haven't seen any flu. So we're seeing a recipe in many places going on stress on hospitals, and I see you capacity and more. Quite honestly, they're not going to be facing that kind of level of stress from Covid 19 again short of a new variant circulating by that, and Mokdad says there's one other thing you'll want to think about as we continue through this new re Reality. We need to reach a place all of us in many countries in the world that we are not going to eliminate Covid 19. We just have to make sure it doesn't kill and it doesn't overwhelm our hospital. And it's spreading at such a low rate that it's not anymore a major health problem in the country and to do that, he again says We need to mask up and get our vaccines now, and we need to make sure the rest of the world catches up on those vaccines. Ryan Harris Co. Mo News. What organizers of big events in Atlanta have made the decision to cancel recently due to Covid 19 spikes, one of its still planning to move forward Atlanta Black pride, the annual celebration of the African American LGBTQ community will still go on as scheduled. Organizers say they hope encouraging attendees to wear masks during the event will keep everyone safe. They also say participants won't see any big changes. "Rosie Rivera is on the phone Salt Lake County sheriff how are you sure for Vera we're doing well good morning warning this cell hold pandemic this whole quarantine this whatever you wanna call it is presented I would imagine some interesting challenges for the for the Salt Lake County sheriff's force can you tell us a little bit about that sure it has created many many challenges for us but we've been able to change the way that we operate to ensure that we're keeping everybody safe we've had cases in our jail that we were able to quarantine everyone very quickly as you know a jail has a very vulnerable population inside so we took swift action and we do not have any prisoners with cold with nineteen in our jail today we've also been working isolation fight where there are cold cases and we do security there that is our public safety bureau in our unified school department has had to deal with the public as far as law enforcement side goes so responding differently to call social distancing when you go on a call and we have seen an increase in some cases go up an increase in some cases that have gone down domestic violence cases I would assume of gone up in the county yes they have man you know as of last week we had a very tragic a domestic violence case turned into a murder suicide so yeah that he's gonna however traffic is gone down you know more pal or staying home hi shoplifting cases things like that have gone down I simply because there's no stores but we're also open nothing nickel go stealing again now we are back to back fill those domestic violence cases share of I would do you have any advice for people who are in those kind of situations I mean I was thinking maybe you should if you could secretly put together a go bag and then you know when you I'm going to the store honey you know just kind of go to the store and don't come I don't know if you have any advice well good bye I would give it everyone has to have patience with each each other because when you're all stuck at home it that's when tensions start up and yeah gold badges good one thing that we're finding is some people are not able to report because they are stuck in a home where as you know an offender somebody who's who they're afraid of so we do ask to try to get away and call if you can and you know there's a problem that you're having some part time there's no place for them to go so they need to fill out there's lots of advocates domestic violence advocates out there they can call and we will help them find a place think they're probably people that think wall were in quarantine so I can't call the police if I'm having trouble with this absolutely you want them to call right yes we encourage you to call let us help you solve the problem and before it gets you know tragic and we we really want to send that message that police report or if you know anyone that is going through domestic violence Colin record and we will respond and we will help them so we have county wide we've had county wide restrictions if they've been loosened a little bit now but countywide restrictions on public gatherings parks have been closed things like that if and when that started happening there were a lot of people who were were very annoyed about the fact that law enforcement was going to have too much control and law enforcement was gonna start ticketing people and putting them in jail for getting together and talking with each other and you know is going to be martial law you you you must write a deal with that that the people who who do express that feeling to you but as far as I know no one's really been arrested or ticketed for social gathering stuff what have you handled all of that well the way that we handle that is through education and communication and you know we've done that a lot in law enforcement with our community policing around and so it was very easy to go out communicate and educate them on the public health border we've talked about on our Facebook pages or Twitter our website and really what it is is we're just getting people to understand why and we have not written any citations so I know there was a lot of concerns but that is not what we were out there for we're just trying to abide by a public health worker but at the same time keep everybody safe I guess it you must have at some point had the the your should the deputies that you have working for you the law enforcement officers must have had at some point though to say look folks you're all going to have to go home you can't be doing this right we haven't been in that situation react yeah the only time that we have actually had to enforce with somebody that was that in isolation fight that we knew was positive and they wanted to leave that anywhere you know the courts get involved and then we have to handle it a little bit different because that does create a public health problem yes we know somebody is positive and going out into the community so we handle both a little bit different but for general population and community we really haven't had any issues that's great Zurcher of Rosie Rivera Salt Lake County sheriff what steps have you had to take to make sure that your officers are safer and protected from because you have to interact with the public a lot what steps have you taken for that well we've made sure that they all have the protective gear on them in their vehicles or when they come to work in the jail we've checked temperatures to ensure that our employees are coming in with her about what you know in the jail we get have employees who who have been positive as well and we just make sure they don't come to work and they are isolating in quarantine and you know we're hoping that this whole cold with nineteen thing passes so we can get back to normal business but it has really really changed the way law enforcement has to operate on a daily basis everything okay with you and your family I've been very very fortunate but you know my family is very healthy and you know I'm working old kind of ours but I do know my grandkids this may but other than that at the very growers grow more share of sure maybe that's all it's I mean it's just kind of all of your somebody's grandma injure the sheriff it's cool it's not all good schools schools yeah well it is different you know there's not that many things hello sheriffs in the whole country yeah yeah it's a little bit different but my grandkids they've been brought up with you know with me being at once for myself it's nothing to them I'm nobody special and I get grandma how long have you did you start out in the Salt Lake County sheriff's with you start your career there I actually worked a year at weaver state colleges the police officer and then I came to Salt Lake County sheriff's office and how many M. in twenty seven years ago what's remarkable that's great I don't think we've ever had a chance actually chat with you some perhaps we'll be able to do it face to face at some point I hope a sheriff Rosie Rivera Salt Lake County sheriff thanks for talking with us thank you and be safe out there thank you we will thank you sheriff we.

"Don't know. Is it is it Jesus. Or is it a Elizabeth Espinosa? I'm not sure which one here's the thing. I came in and other than the chairs being completely like why were the chairs where they were nothing was in near the microphone anywhere. But all right. So we started off there's a bottle of smartwater here. All right. Good smartwater half empty, but fine next to it. A half drunk bottle of Kombucha. So now, we're thinking all right. Somebody's really getting on board the health train. Right. But guess what I found under the desk. Three. Nhs. That's probably from Conway L. That's gross. Was not Conway anway wasn't here. Sunday morning. I know but Conway with we were here yesterday morning there were no fun. Right. Okay. Rossio right, funding's Cambodia and functions. Okay. They're trying. They're starting or I'm just saying it's either Elizabeth or Jesus I'm not putting it past either one of them to enjoy a funding. But I'm thinking Elizabeth is who leaves them laying around. Why Jesus didn't clean the funds up to holy for that? That's on him. Okay. She we should have our show. Now, let's do that. Let's get onto transforming your ordinary house into an extraordinary home. And you know, our going to do that today. We're gonna talk about something that is really opinion. Polarizing I've been saying this around the station all week people have asked me. Hey, what's what's the what's show on Sunday? I'm like wallpaper in the really, in fact, Bella DHS, did this to me Bella in Morgan the other day, I ran into them, and is like what the show on Sunday, and I'm like wallpaper, and she's like really is that even a thing is that still a thing. And I'm like, yeah. Not only is it a thing. But your generation is the one who's bringing it back. Right. Thank god. See we're doing something. Good. You are something constructive and in in seriously doing it. Right. So here's the deal with wallpaper wallpaper. I appeared you know, I was. Going to give you history lesson. It first appeared in the modern sense in the sixteenth century, you know, three or four centuries after we started some serious papermaking and printing along the way, right, and it showed up in the form of black and white hand blocked prints kind of stencils, innocence or stamps to put it better. The guild of paper hangers. I established itself in France in fifteen ninety nine and then it's gone through all sorts of changes through the years now, relative to us those of us living here in the early part of the twenty-first century. Most of us have including me have a visceral kind of gut reaction to wallpaper. That's like, no, thank you. But this is why I'm putting on my designer hat for you today. And I'm not necessarily trying to make you a convert. It's not like I want everybody to run out and and cover their house in wallpaper. But I do wanna open your mind to it again and to be more accurate. We're really not talking about wallpaper as we are talking about wall coverings that is a more accurate specific phrase because it's not just about paper anymore. It's not that simple but wallpaper as general theme is ready for its next act. It is incredibly opinion, polarizing, but it is it's a it's a really effective paint alternative. K now it has for the better part of my lifestyle. My lifestyle. My lifetime been a lifestyle. Taboo, right. We got rid of it. Most of our experienced probably most of your experience has been not adding wallpaper to your house, but tearing it out wallpaper removal, but now thanks to some seriously, ultra stylish prints. There are now dimensional fabrics out there. There are all sorts of. New materials that make it easy to install. And. Yeah, also easy to remove. So finally for the first time in human history wallpaper wall coverings are being specifically designed to not only go up easier than ever but go up and stay up knowing that the day's going to come when they're gonna come back down. And so they are being designed to go up smoothly and to come down easily. And so that right there should alleviate at least half of your fear about wallpaper. We'll get into the other half. Which is you know, is it gauche is it ugly is too much is dated all of that kind of stuff. But I'll tell you why wall coverings as a whole or coming back number one wall coverings really well chosen wall covering brings more drama to a wall than paint. Ever could of their could okay. More detail more drama, more depth more texture than paint. And we have now come to the end of several decades of just going pretty much bare wall paint just paint just beige. And then we went through that was the, you know, the seventies and eighties Bauge, and then we moved into the nineties and the early ought to thousands. And it was kind of grays and blues and neutrals. But it was just what it was. And then we have crossed over into a time where millennials are now buying houses and owning houses and living under their own roofs. Whether they're renting or otherwise. And they want to bring something to, but they have a a minimalist general attitude as a whole not every millennialism analyst. But it it's one of those characterizations of an entire generation less stuff. And yet they're looking for more texture. More texture more color away of having something more interesting in a room without having more stuff in the room. Think about that. And that is where wall coverings come into play, especially if you're a renter. Removable wall coverings come into play because you can make where you live your home without having to screw up your security deposit when the time comes for you to move on. So anyway, lots of stuff about wallpaper to talk about putting it on taking it off all of the different options. And we're gonna talk about as much as we can today, including your calls the number to call me. Eight three three to ask dean eight three three the number two Azzedine. Call me about anything you want. Call me about mothers day mothers get first priority today. So if you're listening and your family hasn't drug you out of the house yet to do whatever you're going to do for mom's day today. You get to cut to the front of the queue fast pass for mothers today. Eight three three to ask dean. I'm so glad you joined this morning. Hang tight. We're just getting started. "Surfaces for your home. Specifically today I've been sharing with you. Some things about men made alternatives to natural stone and traditional ceramic and porcelain tiles, started out by talking about solid surface materials like Korean an avenue. Then we just talked about engineered stone commonly known as courts, which is dominating the market right now dominating the market things like Caesar stone and pen tall and Cambridge in sil- stone and the list goes on and on. Now, I want to talk to you about the newest addition that is coming on strong centered. Porcelain centered S, I N T E R E D, sinter porcelain or centered stone. So what have we talked about thus far as far as getting a sense of how these things are made solid surface materials like Corean thirty three percent resin sixty six percent other natural materials. Okay. Then engineered stone a major step forward. Five percent resin ninety five percent crystalline particles of natural stone like quartz or marble and glass and things like that. Now, sinter porcelain. Zero resins none no glues. No resins. Nothing to dull the appearance what so ever. Centered porcelain is manufactured in two thousand degree Fahrenheit temperatures under incredibly high pressure. Do you know what that is doing that is essentially a manufacturing process that replicates the formation of Ignace rocks? The hardest natural stones in fact, centered porcelain stone harder than granite harder than quartz site. No Perot city. Zero city completely smooth nothing penetrates no ceiling necessary. Okay. Easy to clean because there are no pores. No bacteria can get down into the into the crevices to grow where you're cleaning products. Can't reach them guy. Very hard a little bit brittle, but very very hard. And because it has such a manufacturer with such intense pressures. It has virtually no water absorption, and you know, what that means unlike engineered stone, which absorbs a certain amount of water centered. Porcelain stone can be installed inside the house or outside the house. It can be installed on your deck outside. It can be stalled installed on the outside kitchen countertops because it will not fracture or freeze with water inside it. It causing it to break apart centered. Porcelain works in side, the house and outside the house and also it's got some pretty amazing properties as far as how large can get and how thin it can get. That's what we're going to talk about next. I gotta go for a break. We're gonna come right back and run tell you about the latest and the greatest, and then we're going to do a side by side comparison of all three of these categories of stone. You can really get a sense of the ones that are going to play best to your project. So when you go out there shopping these endless brands and all of the confusing rhetoric basically were narrowing it down to three families and the properties of each. So you know, what to do next that makes sense good? All right. You're listening to home with dean sharp, the house whisper. Rosie Rivera has the news. "EDU slash DT. LA? This is press play I'm Madeline brand. Well, they are not called the boy scouts of America anymore. They are now the boy scouts B S A. And that's because as of last month girls are now allowed in. Well, not everyone is happy about that. Namely, the girls the girl scouts. They have filed a lawsuit against the boy scouts accusing them of essentially poaching their membership Derrick Norman reported on this for the New York Times. He's here now. Hey, how are you? I'm great. Thanks. Well, okay. So explain this to me the girl scouts are mad that the boy scouts are allowing girls in. I thought this organization is all about female, empowerment and equality. Right. Right. They are. So I had spoken to a Representative from the girl scouts about this lawsuit. Specifically, and what they told me is that they're not necessarily upset the the boy scouts who are low in girls into their ranks. The concern is that it's parents are unknowingly steering their children to the boy scouts, and it's kind of taking business away from them, but they can call themselves the boy scouts if there are girls in their rates. So they have to call themselves scouts. They right. It would only make sense. So so they they rebranded. It's a scout. BSA so BSA still stands for boy scouts of America. One aspect of the lawsuit is that taking away the word boy removes the gender context. And that's what's causing confusion to the public. If that makes sense. Yeah. Well, is it causing confusion to the public? Do the girls unknowingly joined the scouts of America BSA thinking, they're joining the girl scouts. I don't know if they're speculating that that's what could happen potentially. But the lawsuit mentions a few instances where you know, like a recruitment table would be set up out of middle school, and it would just say scouts and girls were welcomed. So, you know, the girls go up and sign sign up unknowingly. Okay. So beyond that. So it's just basically a trademark dispute, but I guess beyond that there are concerns on the part of both organizations. I understand that fewer young people are joining either one, and they need to bolster the ranks. Right. Right. Right. The boy scouts membership has kind of been declining slowly over the past five years the at their peak. They had about five million members and about two point three million in two thousand fifteen now they're down to about two point two as of two thousand seventeen. So I mean, it would make sense for the boy scouts to use this to kind of increase membership. Well, why did they decide to allow girls in? They say the it came after years of family members asking if if they can make this change in membership one mother that I spoke with has I think two sons in the boy scouts and a younger daughter. So for years, the younger daughter would be tagging along to Oliver brothers scout meetings and jealous of what they were doing and wanting to do it, and, you know, things at the girl scouts may not necessarily do learning how to properly use knives or go fishing or start fires. And also, you know that same mother told me that it's much easier when she only has to drop their kids off at one meeting place. So the boy scouts told me that they've been hearing that from troops all over the country. And it just you know, that was their initial reason behind their announcement to to change membership. Well, so they do have really different curricula right for that's the word from what I understand. And so like, you said the boys do this sort of traditional stuff that go camping and learn how to start a fire and all that mcgurk. Yeah. Yeah. And we're and work on leadership activities, and they are totally different things. Like, I don't think the girls have to go camping by themselves. Right. I mean, the outdoorsy stuff like there is with the boy scouts. Yeah. Like, the fishing and wiggling with knives. So there there are a lot of girls who are those kinds of activities. And especially I mean, every girl that I've talked to us had older brothers that do it. So they see it and want to do it in one case one one little girl that I spoke with had joined the girl scouts and was kind of she liked it. She had no problem with the girl scouts in what they do in their mission. But what you really wanted to do was learn how to fish, well, so one of the girl scouts do that. Why don't they also teach these outdoorsy things and one of the boys sell cookies? Boys. Like, yeah. Of course, I like cookies. Maybe in time that will that will change. And that's exactly what will happen. But when I did when I spoke to the girl scout Representative they he specifically told me that that as of right now, they were not going to change their operation in any way to kind of align with their competitors. So they don't believe that Bill need to start recruiting boys. So the competitors you for reporting this out, I've attended one of the girls go meetings in Staten Island in got to see it firsthand. And it seems like all the girls. You were they were eager to learn. They were happy to be there. And it seems like it was pretty well received within the boy scouts, and there was certain backlash within the boy scouts itself where some older scout leaders from different sections of the city that I couldn't quote in my article because they they didn't want to go on the record. But they were not happy with it. So that is an opinion that that is out there that I didn't get to expand on the adults happy about it or the boys a both both and a scout leader who said his sons didn't like the idea, and then one mother in queens, didn't like the idea, you know, it wasn't anything bad necessarily. They just they saw more as an institution where the gender division can promote growth in certain areas. One of told me that having girls in these activities would just distract the boys from what they're doing. You know, what I mean like they wanted like that that time away from girls and time away from I guess. Distraction essentially we've heard that. Right. That was his exact argument. I mean with that. But for the most part it was very well received. And are they totally integrated or do they are they in separate groups within the they're they're not the girls, there are all girl troops and all boy, truce whistle boy scouts or within the scouts, PSA, whatever. Yeah. Within the scouts BSA in. And I and I believe at this point is going to remain like that. So for example, on Staten Island, the troop that I visited there was the troupe was to twenty two of Staten Island. So there's boy's troop to twenty two girls troupe to twenty two well, doesn't this defeat the whole purpose that they're supposed to be integrated? Right. But the activities they're doing the same activities. I see. But why can't they do when I was there? The girls were learning first aid and wiggling would like learning how to properly use a nice. So they were and I think the boys had just learned that. So they're keeping them gender separate within the boy scouts and everyone's okay with that. Yeah. Yeah. Who knows if that will change down the line? Derek Norman reporter for the New York Times. Thank you so much. Thank you so much metal. And I appreciate it. Coming up in the nineteen fifties.
