Next generation drive-in theaters are here!

"TRIBECA. A company founded by actor Robert Deniro and his producing partner Jane Rosenthal. They are staging a summer July drive in festival, offering new films like Palm Springs, classics like back to the future, and Jerry Maguire and stand up comedy on the big screen. And then the fall Tribeca is bringing NFL game so the drive in as well. Now my screening of Palm Springs started at five PM at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California. When I asked if that wasn't perhaps a Typo as you need dark skies to be able to project the film under the big screen, I was given a firm. No, we use LCD screens which are viewable from the cars I was told LCD like the TV's. We buy and put in our living rooms now to listen to the audio. They don't put a speaker on your car door like they used to, but instead they. They ask you to tune into a specific portion of the FM radio dial or use a Wifi signal to hear it on your phone. Food came from gourmet food trucks part of the rose. Bowl, which had several screens going at once now it's funny, because just a few years ago, drive ins were absolutely dead, only used for flea markets, and the like on Sundays and occasionally in very rural markets. They might shows movies. So I love their back, and I hope they make it. However I parked too close to the screen and could only see seventy percent of it unless I yanked my car chair back all the way. And the LCD looked bad as good as a TV does in a really bright room in other words, not so hot. The audio was great, but I had to keep the car running for two hours in order to play the FM that and it was a hot night so I need the air conditioning on as well and yes I burn through a bunch of gas, but you know I was glad to get out and I know now to park way in the back next time and to go to a later show when it's dark and most importantly to fill up on gas before arrive. TRIBECA is not the only company working on reviving the drive in there are several others around the country. Be sure to try it out and support them because who knows how long it's going to be before we can go out to the movies again.

How Did Juneteenth Get Started?

How Did Juneteenth Get Started?

"Every year on June nineteenth, millions of people across America. Come together to celebrate June eighteenth with parties parades, prayer, breakfast and golf tournaments, cookouts and music. The holiday is now officially recognized in forty seven states plus Washington DC though it hasn't been made a national holiday yet, despite having been around for more than one hundred and fifty years. We spoke with Paula Austin a professor of African American Studies and History at Boston University. She said You'd be surprised. There are many students who get to my class, and they sort of never learned about the history of enslavement. They've never learned about the civil rights movement. I think I've had students who because of where they're from, or their families know about June eighteenth, and of actually participated in the celebrations, but most students come, and they don't know. But let's go back to the beginning on June nineteenth eighteen, sixty, five more than two months after confederate general Robert e Lee surrendered to ulysses s grant at APP Maddix which all, but ended the civil war, a US army officer by the name of Major General Gordon Granger. In Huston Texas with two momentous announcements, the end of the civil war, and with it the end to slavery. Nobody is quite sure why it took so long for news of summation to reach Texas several stories have been told throughout the years though none has ever been confirmed including one of an earlier messenger who was killed on his way to Texas to tell the news of freedom. Others believe that some enslavers truth, but simply continued going about business as usual. The most likely is simply that there were not enough troops to enforce the emancipation proclamation whether enslaved people knew about it or not, so things remained status quo. That is until Major General. Grainger showed up. After granger's announcement, some of the two hundred fifty thousand freed people in Texas, immediately left for the promise of true freedom in the north, while others traveled to rejoin family members one formerly enslaved person, Molly Herrell said in the slave narratives of Texas. We all walked down the road singing shouting to beat the band. Others stayed defined pain work in the fields elsewhere. That day marks what is now often called lack independence day, or the fourth of July. It's the American celebration of freedom from slavery. June teen was first observed in Texas in eighteen, sixty six. It wasn't officially recognized as a holiday in any state until Texas did so in Nineteen, seventy nine. Since then only North Dakota South Dakota and Hawaii have declared a holiday. In recent years both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate have formally recognized June nineteenth as June, tenth Independence Day. Various movements to grant the day status is a national holiday are ongoing. US Senator Cory Booker said in two thousand eighteen. On this day we must confront ugly parts of our history and honor the slaves who suffered and died under a repressive regime. We must also pay tribute to all those who had the strength and conviction to fight to end slavery and keep our Union together. June teeth independence. Day is also an important moment to recognize how far we've come and take note of how far we have yet to go. Certainly during the original June eighteenth, there was still a lot of work to be done. It came just months after the civil war ended and two years after the emancipation proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which abolished slavery, had been passed by Congress was well on its way to being ratified by the states, but the fourteenth and fifteenth guaranteeing equal protection and the right to vote to all citizens, regardless of skin color were still a couple years off. And not all enslaved people in Texas were immediately freed some held by defiant plantation owners were not emancipated until much later, some formerly enslaved people who tried to leave historical reports show were tracked down and killed. Many more stepped into a future of poverty, fear and uncertainty. Austin suggests that many Americans ignorance about June eighteenth stems from a disinclination to completely face the country's past slavery, and it's far reaching and continuing aftermath. Still? June eighteenth has persevered. Its observance has waned through the years under the oppression of Jim Crow laws and attitudes, but the festivities that began in Texas eventually spread to more states and the idea of commemorating block independence picked up through the civil rights era of the nineteen sixties, and the parties continued today. Austin, said the kinds of celebrations that I've seen and been a part of have been incredibly wonderful there about black culture there about black history there about the resistance and the resilience of the black community. Several years before grainger made his do nineteenth declaration in Galveston famed American Orator Frederick Douglass himself formerly enslaved, spoke to an abolitionist group in New York about the fourth of July. As being dave independence, and how it didn't fit for all Americans, he said what the American slave is your fourth of July I answer a day that reveals to him more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. Opel Lee a former schoolteacher counselor in Fort Worth. Texas has been instrumental in trying to get June. Tenth recognized as a national, holiday. This year she'll walk from the Fort Worth Convention Center to the will. Rogers Coliseum, leading a caravan, urging people to sign a petition for the cause leave who is ninety three years old has been part of the Fort Worth June eighteenth festivities for more than forty years. Last year, it's as important as the fourth of July. In fact I dream some day. They celebrate from the nineteenth to the fourth like they do Mardi Gras. I haven't dreamed as large as the Rose Bowl or the macy's parade, but I'm getting there. To those who observed June eighteenth despite its shaky beginnings, and it's still unfulfilled pledge the day still holds the promise of freedom, independence, equality, ideas, and ideals always celebrating.

Most Southern California Fireworks Shows Quietly Canceled

"The skies over southern California are allied with fireworks on the fourth of July but this year with covert nineteen still very much in the picture the prospect of fireworks shows is definitely DM to major fireworks shows or a staple of the fourth the Rose Bowl Dodger Stadium the Hollywood Bowl Newport Huntington Long Beach of all been canceled all over concerns about large crowds possibly spreading coronavirus full shoes it was pyro spectaculars one of the largest fireworks entertainment company says even the concept of socially distancing a fireworks displays a tough sell some stories Mike site that will it's still gonna be a draw line how can you control people from to stay at their house or okay fine I'm not allowed to park in a park a block away one of the only suspected side effects of the lack of large shows maybe a surge in sales of fire were sold from small stands with the families on their own can put a little sparkle in their fourth even if it **** heads with local prohibitions on the use of fireworks in many cities

Discipline and Determination

"First of all let me just say thank you so much for taking the time out to talk with us. I certainly do appreciate it. Thank you for having me. I appreciate you having that the second thing I like to do is to ask you to tell us about yourself now when I say that. Many feel free to go all the way back to when Benny I started all as you can start more current day. Tell us about yourself born and raised in Detroit. Michigan will actually outside Detroit. You know a couple of years from places to Middle School. And Grosse Pointe Mosul elementaries who rose point in moved out the Southfield and went to Detroit Country Day high school where I played three sports basketball for a ranch ride one to eight inches and buy raw and one in track championship. Long Jumper graduated from there might style ship offers to play for Bond College and chose to go to Michigan State University. Where but there for five years by four years leading receiver on in junior and senior there on the Rose Bowl in twenty thirteen one of the best teams initials state history when we went thirteen one. Nedley to seminated professionally. That did not get drafted. I'm currently wanted to my season in the NFL won the Super Bowl and Denver in two thousand sixteen play my first four years in Denver for the last two years. I've played in New York last as Peyton Manning. The plane would be lamenting though nine and author. And you know that's just a little bit about me. I am a brother team. Want rather than two. I have two parents and step mom so I had a great people around me and I've been able to do things in my life with the help is a family friend fantastic. I don't even know where to start. We're GONNA take a quick left turn and learn a little bit more about you. What's your favorite thing to do now for you? I'm going to say outside of football. I enjoy things. I enjoy travelling. Recently you know taking a couple of trips to Mexico I would agrees go to. La Lived in New York to travel. Highlights been time with family and friends love being around my friends and you know guys that I played with friendships that I've grown throughout the year. I do enjoy reading. That's why also why I wrote a book enjoy learning from April. I and I really movie out will love data. What's your favorite movie right? Now I would say green book. I really like an movie of all time. You know you got any denzel movie really this one. The greatest actors of all time so American gangster within her faith a thousand disgrace got it so talk a little bit about your journey because a lot of times when people think about athletes we all understand how hard it is and how you have to be disciplined and Yadda Yadda Yadda talk a little bit. About what it takes to be successful not just athletically but in general you gotta work hard wood. I'd like to tell people is that success doesn't happen in a day. It happens every single day. When you say you have to be disciplined after that the right at the set goals that you really want to achieve like a new one to be a professional athlete. I didn't know if it was going to be for baller basketball but every single day like I was working towards that and our talented anybody out there. Yes be disciplined is very important but being persistent stand persisted toward your goal like Adobe Wall Time It took me twenty two years and come a pro athlete. Isn't that something happened overnight or happened. After a couple years at Michigan state not had been working for this pretty much. Whole Life. Now always consciously gone toward something but once. I started at Age Fourteen. Fifteen years old like all right. I WANNA be a professional athlete. I'm working towards that every single day. So success doesn't happen in a day. It happened every single day goal. Said you gotTA break in long-term goals down to your short term goals and your short term goals in T- long-term wills data. Thanks this so talk a little bit about your book. Why a book reflection reflection of where I met in my life and that things that I've been able to accomplish as a team as an individual and also the people that have been arrived around so great players and I've learned a lot of grey base of why not share those things with the world. Does I know with certain books have done for me in my life. And that's why I wrote one and why not inspired me. So that's why I'm so when people pick up and read it. What are they gonNA take away from it? This is like a self help. Books like self actualize books. And they're going to realize that they have all the power in everything that they have that they want to achieve their goals or dreams right inside a woman. They'll just Meyer Goldberg from a semis stories. But some of the people that I have in the book like my brother or Draymond Green Dr Quiz demarcus ware also has some fringe were entrepreneurs or in the book as well because connected. One person in the world is Allie. I want them to also learn from friends who still have the same doubts fears and insecurities still were able to overcome those things. There are ups and downs in life if you really want something. You're going to have to stay precision discipline and go after it. And that's what I just want be learning. I want people to take away from it. Give us some insight on one of the time because I know I'm in a season and in time in my life where I have had the thought. Okay I want to give up. I don't WanNa to do this anymore. What about you have you ever had a time in your life or in your career where you wanted to give up? You wanted to quit. But you didn't and help US UNDERSTAND. What made you continue on? I don't think I ever wanted to give quit. I would always tell myself dot to give up or quit in. Ireland will just know that. I would have a lot of regrets if I did give up to quit so I don't think I've had very cut moments like man. I don't WanNa feel this pain or I don't WanNa feel dizzy or fear a life. I've always told myself like you're going to regret this. If you don't go back out there or try so I don't ever want to give up but I just like everybody else. I've had my fears. That's an insecurities but I'll always tell myself. You gotta go for the asked. You knew each yourself up. If you don't get it was was one of your biggest failures if you describe it that way personally. I don't consider anything that I don't achieve as a failure but talk a little bit about some of those moments for you. What was the biggest moment in your life where he thought? Wow Man that Dingo will. I have moments like this every year but the first time. I've really felt a big failures. Probably my Richard Junior year at Michigan State. That'd be twenty twelve and I dropped. Touchdown passes on a big nationally televised game on ABC. And now that was the first time where you know they gain was really on my shoulders. I mean only happened in the first quarter. But you know you know. Lose game first quarter but I like that play could have made by different game. That was the first time night. They'll those fears and insecurities all that nervousness said. That's when I really got into understanding the mind. How strong the MY IDEAS? I can care of your mind. How IMPORTANT MODEL

Michael Smith on the Paul Finebaum Show

"You're listening to the Paul Finebaum Show podcast and we're delighted to welcome all of you back. Oh one of the Tru truly great reporters On the on the college sports business seen in Michael Smith joining us now. In one of the most recent issues of the Sports Business Journal talking about The first six years of the College Football Ballpoint Michael Great to have you on we. We're always looking for ways to talk. I'd rather do it other than on the only on the air. But we're delighted to have you here and I wanna I just first of all Just have you do reflect on some of the reporting that you did in this piece as well as your own observations of the first uh for six years of the College Football playoff. Hey Paul thanks for having me So good catch up with you and You know the point of the story was to look at the College Football Playoff Championship game. We're six years into it now. The the deal it is being goes twelve years so we felt like at at this midpoint on the TV contract. It was a good time to kind of take stock of what has worked what has not worked and so we went out and hold a lot of marketing then media experts and got their opinions on on that question and so as you can imagine. Most of the feedback was positive It's better than the system we had before But it still leaves a lot of questions in terms of how do you grow the TV audience. Had He made it. It could schedule more consistent so we don't have two weeks between the semi final and final. How do we keep games off of New Year's Eve questions like that that they continue to come up and no real solution for right now you also took look with ESPN executives About the time of the game. And that's a that's that's a complaint you get all the time this year. The game ended. I think twelve fourteen no the game a couple of years ago when even later an and Michael you and I live on the East eastern time zone we forget there are people in California who are three hours behind us but That's not going to change. There's a no it's not gonNA change you know. Five of the six championship games have gone past midnight. And like you said some going well past midnight and that's where it really comes down to. How competitive the game is and with LSU pulling away at that point the viewer show probably after midnight was not as great raise. It would have been saved for the Alabama Georgia overtime game. No it's a really good point Let me ask you since you are You know all these people pool and I know you just go through spending some time and can't wait to hear more about it with Jim Delany in Nashville. Who Retired how? How does college football allow the Big Ten and the PAC twelve and more importantly the Rosebowl? Aw dictate everything else that goes around it. The that's kind of age old question June and You know there. There's such an allegiance. There's such loyalty to to the ball. Games like especially the Rosebowl like you pointed out often and that really is one of the major factors. You know the rosebowl being locked in at that time. New Year's Day on factors I y you cannot consistently put the semifinals on New Year's Day. And then come back with the championship game a week later And there there's just It's almost hard to explain. But there there's such a sense of The the Rose Bowl has been so. Oh good to college football that you do have loyalists like Jim Laney and others the you know who the SEC. In the sugar bowl for example that They they don't want to relinquish that. And so the only way to make sure the Rose Bowl and sugar bowl maintain that status as they own new year's Day. I wonder again. I have great admiration for Delaney and the fact that I would give him the credit here. I think you can correct a For being able to do this and then what did the SEC do. As you've reported Mike's life came in and said okay. If they're going to do that we wanna own the sugarbowl Slob of the problem with the sugar. The ball slot. Mike is at the game. Doesn't start till nine o'clock right. You know that's you know that's an aspect active Of all the experts that we talked to media marketing is worth. We talked to the one criticism or the one Miss when you talk about a hitter misses that kept coming up was the inconsistency the scheduling and maybe not being able to capitalize as much on in the semifinal games as they would like you know we saw the TV audience really spiked with that first championship game between Satan Oregon Oregon and since then it's Kinda settled in lower number right around twenty five million viewers. That's a fantastic crowd in this definitely It definitely gives. ESPN the ability to own that that evening. But when you think about the Super Bowl being eighty five to ninety million million viewers compared to twenty five million for the College Football Championship. You wonder how. How is the CFPB championship game? Going to grow its viewership and And the inconsistency of this is one of the factors that a lot of people pointed to that that could limited going forward and and I wonder listen. I don't I don't want to minimize twenty five million people That's a big number and when you look at the most watched events of the year after the super bowl off the collar after the Super Bowl and the in the NFL playoffs College football biggest night is huge. But I'm just watching it this week and I realized the Kobe tragedy has has cast a pall but From here on as you know Michael you're in the sports business world the Super Bowl. Aw is as big of an event as there is in the world and college. Football just seem like it's sandwiched in between the NFL. Playoff off games on Saturday and Sunday right. So this schedule if you think about it There were three. NFL Sundays in between the semi finals. The final amazing and so that goes back to the consistency question the scheduling and being able to maximize the opportunity to college. Football has to to own certain days as and when you think about cargo owning January first and neither the finals nor the semifinals are on January. First it seems a little counterintuitive and January. I was a huge day. I mean the the audience for the Michigan Alabama Citrus Bowl was was Gargantuan and so it's not like ESPN is going broke on this. I mean they're still doing pretty well. And maybe maybe the maybe. Maybe they're better off owning the semi final day and New Year's Day. I don't know I'm just a lowly employees at ESPN. But my question to you is what happens next We're sick. We're we're six years in then every year. There's this rampant speculation that something's about to change and it never seems to. You know all these people you spend a lot of time with the college football powerbrokers our brokers Between now and when are they going to alter if assuming they are the college. Football playoff are more people are more schools getting again we. That's a great question and an access is is definitely one of the one of the questions that I post a lot of the people that work in that space and There's there seems to be a consensus that that the commissioners at least are willing to talk about. That's a good thing. That's a step forward but I don't know of anyone who thinks it's going to happen before this. This twelve year contract runs. It runs its course and so it could happen in the next contract. I I definitely think it's something that will be discussing the talk about you know not keep coming back to this loyalty to bowl games. One of the one of the arguments that I hear against the eighteen playoff is about those four teams that lose in the in the quarterfinals awesome. They don't get the bowl experience. Well if you're one of those four teams they lost in the quarterfinals. Would you rather have a shot at being in the playoff. Who would you rather be able to spend a couple of days at a theme park having your bowl experience and so those it almost sounds kind of silly but those are the kind of conversations that are taking place when they're contemplating expansion and let me ask you Michael I mean this year we had the the the the peculiarity of the lending tree bowl in mobile with all due. Respect to lending three which happens to be headquartered around the corner from where we were sitting having a bowl game on Monday night and I realized I was a Corcoran the schedule but that late in the process I mean is that experience really that meaningful. I I've been to the College Football Bowl Association. I've heard what those guys say and they work very hard but still It just seems discombobulated up to me and many others. Yeah you know I. I guess that's just to me the the the the mid to third week in December bowl and and also the ones that you're talking about leading up to the championship game and early January. I just you know. Obviously they're important. TV CONTENT FOR ESPN but also they provide an opportunity to go on. PREGAME halftime the post game to talk about the next game. And so it's all part of the build up in an intersection that way. You know one other thing. I was thinking about fall. We're talking about kind of the future of the CFP in this current contract in years. Eleven and twelve. They're still to championship game sites to be determined. And that's something that will happen in the next couple of years but That's one of the things I'm GONNA be. Watching is what two cities are able to land. There's there's last two championship games in this twelve year cycle. What I'm curious before you go? What what are the next couple of years? Look like for the CIP in terms of In terms of site well Indianapolis is in there somewhere. It it is Is going to go obviously Miami and La to the new stadium in Houston. Okay then those last two years are to be determined. But you could definitely envision like Las Vegas a while you could invade eh envision somebody like Orlando that has bid for championship games in the past. you could go to north to a minneapolis or two met met life in New Jersey New York Those are those are some of the sites that I think this year Vegas is going to get a pretty good workout with what's to the NFL draft and everything else. It's hard to imagine not being in the Niger. That's a lot of a lot of places are going Michael Michael Fascinating If it's a really incredible read and of course anytime Vince Thompson is quoted. The Jesus People

"This episode of five minutes in Church history. Let's just go back into the recent past about fifty years ago or so. So and the founding of the Jesus people are sometimes called the Jesus Movement or sometimes called Jesus freaks these folks began in nineteen sixty eight in California. This was the era of the Hippie. These hippies descended upon southern California and some churches there and some Christians there decided they would reach out out to these hippies and bring them to Christ and so we have the beginning of the Jesus Movement in Nineteen. seventy-one Billy Graham. I'm was invited to be the Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade and as he sat in his float and it made its way down towards the Rose Bowl. He noticed that the streets were lined with literally hundreds of these long haired youth holding up one finger. Their Index Finger pointed to heaven with the one way sign and and that was the sign of the Jesus people. This caught Billy Graham's attention and he wrote a book called the Jesus generation that year went through many printings and sold well over a half half a million copies and put the Jesus people on the map of the media and on the map of the American church. Well what can we make of this phenomenon of the Jesus people well I we have to see that. They had a huge impact on American evangelicalism. They both reflected trends in American evangelicalism. Awesome and they also set some new trends. They tended to be very pentecostal. They focused very much on signs and wonders. And they were fixated on these supernatural super-natural experiences that they had an would share with each other. Secondly they totally changed the look of the church. These are not folks wearing suits and sitting in pews. These were tank top short flip flop wearing kids. Who would sit cross legged on the floor? But it wasn't always how they looked it was is also how they approached Church found this fascinating article from December. Twenty five nine thousand nine hundred seventy one in the San Bernardino County Sun Sun the newspaper for Hollywood and the article reads Pat Boone's home swimming pool used for baptisms Beverly Everley Hills California. It was actually picked up by the and the first sentence says in the swimming pool behind his magnificent home in posh Beverly Hills Pat Boone. Baptises the repentance. The article goes on to talk about within about six months time. Well over two hundred and fifty baptisms took place in Pat Boone's swimming pool and number of those baptisms were of musicians and that takes us to another significant impact of the Jesus people well. It was really here that we have the birth of what we call. CCM Christian contemporary music or the birth of Christian rock. Those early Pioneers and Christian Rock. We're Randy Stone Hill. And Larry Norman in fact it was. Larry Norman who published the song or wrote the song. Why should the devil have all the good music? Even even some secular artists got in on the mix. Paul stookey of Peter. Paul and Mary produced his Christian albums in the same era. This was the time. We're calvary chapel. Founded founded Maranatha in the Mirror Anathema label and that launched the praise and worship and course phenomenon. There's so much a part of American evangelicalism today. It all started there in one thousand nine hundred seventy among the Jesus people will lastly as we talk about the Jesus people what we see as they were very much less counter cultural and more within culture this was is true not only of music but of all forms of the arts and a forms how they approach the church. It was the Jesus people who launched not not only Christian music they really launched the Christian bookstore industry of the nineteen seventies and they launched so much that happened in the nineteen eighties with jackals locals getting involved in politics. Well what happened to the Jesus people. They SORTA faded in the one thousand nine hundred eighty S. I had a church history professor. who used to say what happened to them? While they all cut their hair started families and became insurance salesman. Well who knows but we do know that they left quite an impact on the American scene on the American aircon. Church in on American evangelicals. Well that's the Jesus. I'm Steve Nicol. Thanks for listening

"rose bowl" Discussed on Championship Drive

"Happy New Year Fun Season Ballgames thought the Fiesta and the rose delivered sugarbowl had a handful for storylines. Several Georgia players out. George pickens taken over Matt Rolls. Coaching future big topic last couple of days really pumped up about about today show. I don't think he needs a big introduction since he's well known for a variety of reasons my favorite one is his comeback story as continues especially this past season when he joined our team at ESPN as a college football analyst on Games and in Studio Ryan Leaf joining us here on the herbstreet and pollock podcast. Oh cast a year ago. You were sneaking into the Rose Bowl with Kirk herbstreet pass of tall dark and handsome broadcaster. Now you just just finished up your first season it is. What's it been like for you Ryan? Well it's been really special is what it's been exactly right. It was just over a a couple years ago where I was in a situation where I simply wanted to go shadow Kirker street doing the Rose Bowl and I didn't and get in contact with anybody to get me a credential fast enough so Herbie somehow had yours lying around you is left. And we're sneaking sneaking into a bar when more eighteen years old trying to get me into the college football analysts world next to me. We're still sneaking me in either. Put My over your picture. Just show the black hair and somehow we got Herbie that day. I didn't even know anything about it until you share that at the college football you know well it where we have our annual journey where we all have a camp and everybody comes together and August yes summit we get ready for the season you went up on stage and you shared shared your story and how excited you were an. I thought you fit in perfectly slid right into your role as a guy that was an analyst but also Calling Games and when when you get the chance to call games you get to see things from a different perspective. And we really don't have a lot of your perspective and I'm saying that from from PAC twelve angle as a quarterback quarterback that was in that conference that understands that style of football kind of weigh in strongly here at ESPN and calling games when you look at what you do and what you bring to the table. What separates you? I think from other analysts. Well for me I walked into the business really wanted to call a game name like I was sitting next to you on the couch like my dad and I were sitting on the couch watching the game. That's what we've been doing it for years. And he was almost always like my play by play got you know He. He mentioned what down and distance. It is and and the score and things like that and I would. I would comment on what just played out and My play by I play partner. This year was Klay mastic and we kind of fit that role. He was he kinda. Even though we were close in age he felt like a guy that I could relate to and that terms he he called the plays what was going one on. And I just I had fun you know was self deprecating and wasn't super-critical guys because I know what that felt like. I just wanted to tell you what happened any viewer out. There there was watching the game live. I wanted them to feel like I was sitting next to him. When we were just you know you know enjoying watching a game together and and bantering back and forth you you mentioned? I know what that feels like would. Would you pay attention to all that stuff when you were in college when you went to the NFL on who was saying what about you You like to so you don't but everybody here's what's going on in this day and age especially with the fact that. ESPN is such a large platform. When I got the job here I knew that You know I know what I knew what guys were picking us to the Finish College Game Day in the morning on Saturdays I I knew what they were saying about our football team so yeah it plays. It's a role so I I I don't WanNa be never WANNA be super critical. These kids are playing a game Having Fun they're not getting paid for it. It'd be probably a little different if I was commentating nominating and analyzing the NFL. Just because I know what what kind of difference that is but for me. I wanted to be fun hearted and really just really showcase the the wonder of college football because I think the best thing that there is it gave me everything and I for me to be a part of it is huge. I love that perspective. Live and before we WANNA go down a wormhole but before we go into the College Football Angle you. You said something a few weeks ago and your your twitter account which I I was I was I was like wow. This is on point where you said you wish you could talk to Baker Mayfield like what would you say to a guy like that and what he is gone through and allow you you know his two seasons with the browns and trying to figure things out we see the highs and those are really big highs and now you're on the commercials everywhere you go and then you deal with all the setbacks this past season what would you say to him in in handling things as a franchise quarterback. Yeah that's the biggest thing right like he what's really worked. His whole career is is taking things personally kind of having that ship on your shoulder but guess what you're the first pick in the NFL draft. You're the heisman trophy winner. That's no longer the case you deserve to be there. You belong there now act accordingly and. That's always the the issue for me to where I was. I always felt like I was the underdog or I was not in. Maybe not supposed supposed to be there and I need to prove people wrong. The people Talk Down to me or or question me or or didn't believe in me. I had to throw back in their faith. And then that's certainly isn't the case. It costs costs you nothing to be self deprecating to be vulnerable to be transparent it it. It doesn't cost you anything now. Don't get me wrong you have to go play. You have to be successful too because you know some of the best guys in the whole world in terms of personality and and individuals as human beings Didn't didn't make the NFL because they simply couldn't cut it by playing at the highest level. Now if you can go fall that up you don't have to be the best individual you know and and for me I just simply want to be able to sit in front of him and say hey this is what went wrong for me and you may already think you know that but I wanna give you something tangible that Actually showcase that. Because you know what I was sitting exactly in the same spot you were identical. You know you've had a much more successful early run in the NFL rookie of the year and what they've done but you know what's has transpired. This year in year two was tantamount to him not even playing in year. Two to be honest with you it was a regression and now they're in a situation where he's going went on to third possibly four head coach because of the interim tag a year ago in his third year. It's crazy to think about that too. We know it starts with quarterbacks in his starts with how they handle adversity you and I were on the sidelines of the S.. And watching Clemson deal with adversity watching Ohio state a handle that adversity and then come back and both teams. It felt like a a fifteen round fight. You know early on the scorecard who was Ohio. State dominating the rounds in an Clemson came back and had a couple nice nice punches to to separate themselves in and it went all the way down to the wire and I. I love and environment like that it for you when you're watching Trevor Lawrence when you're watching Justin fields. What are you looking for from quarterbacks like that? That are are franchised quarterbacks at the college level evil and you know they're going to be a franchise quarterback on the next level in the NFL. You know I was really interested to see how they were going to deal with the adversity. My biggest question. Mark for Clemson in that game is what what happened in the third quarter or or early in the game if they get hit in the mouth and they're down and I heard an analogy earlier this week about when you taste blood in your mouth for the first time after kind of getting popped in the face and that paste kind of just awakening you and you and I were standing right there on the sideline when Trevor Lawrence took the shot the head and the targeting and you have the star player lay on the field. It looked like the air was just suck Outta the stadium in terms of what Clemson was doing. And then you watch him rise jog off run off the run up the field and there was something. Palpable that that came through that clemson sideline and we could feel it and then when they scored with eighteen on the drive at the end and then they called his number on this score. Fourteen points in the last three minutes and fifty five seconds to that game right after that targeting penalty. That was something that I needed to happen for that team. St The reenergize version of Trevor Lawrence. Because it felt for a little while like they just didn't know what hit them. You know there was an overwhelming feeling of and having to deal with that speed of Ohio state in fields on the other end was feeling all the good that comes with and he had to deal with adversity late. He came back from it too so it was an awesome awesome awesome chance for both of you and IDA to watch play out in real time. Steve Two guys that are probably going to play at the next level and be really good deal with adversity in the highest has level of a game you can imagine in finish the best part of that game for me was all the Sunday town on the field. All making an impact act like I mean from Dobbins to chase young too you know Khuda to to eat in the wide receivers for Clemson they were. They were shut down to a certain certain extent but then to see Lawrence step up to me. I just love seeing stars find a way to step up in the big moments and and I gotTa give all the credit-worthy Jacob dominance I knew he was a special talent but when you're watching him on the field it it felt like the way that game was being played out. He makes that one catch on the screen. Green that's a touchdown and Ohio state's lead is a to a point where you're like. This could be insurmountable. And if he doesn't get injured in the second half and he still plays and and he plays well. He doesn't get injured. I think the Buckeyes win the game. Well there's a lot of things that you know if you know if for candy and nuts you know we all have a a wonderful Christmas too. So it's it is what it is you have to go in and play in. And he did Dobbins did everything he was asked of him. He did drop a couple of big passes passes right the one. In the end zone for the touchdown on the screenplay on the bullet that would have really put a I think a dagger and what you were considering Clemson's chances but the game played out how the game played out. He was it good at any running back out there And you were right. The Sunday talent showed up. You know especially at corner real estate a KUNA and Dan And what they were able to do they shut down. Probably the best wide receivers in the business right. They Shut Down Justin Rock. They shut down he higgins. Those guys are going to have to be huge and the LSU game here in a couple of weeks I if if Clemson thinks they're going to win that game and they got shut down. They had to look for other ways. That was. What's so cool? About what Clinton I did in that game is like their leading. Rusher was their quarterback who hasn't been the guy all year long game was trying to say guess what their leading receiver was that running back. Travis Rabat's atheist so that that's really special to see a team that that wasn't necessarily able to do what they've been doing all year. Then find a way to beat the League have Buckeye fans going to look back and just wonder about. I mean our net was great. Aku was great and the Shaun Wade is still playing that game. Does Trevor Lawrence have the ability to run down the field. The way he did score that touchdown a lot of what if Playing out in front of us. And obviously you know the catch that people people thought was a fumble that turned into a you know a scoop and score that was overturned A lot of questions about what's the replay rule Is the rule. Does the rule need to be adjusted. They follow the letter of the law with the rule. But is it the right rule and and obviously that would be discussed. Ah Length I think for the next seven to eight months when the Buckeyes look back on this season now looking forward and moving forward clemson getting ready for Lsu. A AH quarterbacks will get the big names with Lawrence and of course borough. What's the one thing that you got circle to you that you want to see a new Orleans in this matchup? I I wanna see what this just Clemson defense is GONNA do To Stop Joe Borough. That's that's going to be the key. They're going to have to turn them over and in fact not only take it away at least two times. The only time that happened happen. This year was against old myth..

Herbert has 3 TD runs, Oregon beats Wisconsin in Rose Bowl

"Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert ran for three touchdowns as the ducks nipped Wisconsin twenty eight twenty seven in the Rose Bowl game it was Herbert's thirty yard mad dash to the end zone midway through the fourth quarter that provided the winning score and high praise from his head coach Mario Cristobal the bridge in so many different ways and you see the you see like to see the army sea of decision making we don't see the leadership in the heart and in the end that was the biggest difference my opinion it's the ducks fourth rose bowl win in school history Wisconsin quarterback Jack cone threw a touchdown pass but there for turnovers proved too much for the badgers to overcome mark Myers Pasadena California

Bowl Games 2019-20: Schedule and Predictions for Top Upcoming Games

"We're talking ball games he's around March here I'm Susan Burke as we want to know what you think about any and all ball games were talking red box ball because the fighting Illini our plane in the red box full talk or text three one two five nine one eighty nine hundred now as we're talking about rob just even going to a big ten game as it is is so much fun so much going on that date you can't see from the TV so to speak and while a bowl game in the bay area sounds like fun to me I I just want everyone to know that I did lobby to get us out of the red box full wasn't quite in the budget maybe next year exactly maybe next year but I I did try and try well it we make the Rose Bowl next year and they they've they've got a Serra send us folks there I think so they were you know like you said a lot of fun things going on and she's there's no shortage of of things that the the fighting line I have been involved in since the touch down the other day in San Francisco I know they've had a lot of fun Brian Barnhart was telling us when he joined us earlier voice of a line I basketball and football for that matter they bend Alcatraz and they've been doing charitable work all sorts of stuff sounds like you're having a children's hospitals yeah and you know I also want to mention that the Dallas Mavericks are taking on the Golden State Warriors tonight why do I say that because the fighting line I will be there they're gonna go enjoy the basketball game tonight as well that's right that's right they are going to go see that game I think you know just from an outsider's point of view I I think that's a great way to take these players minds off of the fact that they've got a huge nationally televised game yes coming up when they take on cal of course again you can catch right here on WLS AMA ninety ends look a whole lot of stuff going on out in the bay area I absolutely I mean first of all it wouldn't be a game without a pep rally right no I hadn't the twenty nine th the first bowl of men open to fans is the pep rally redbox bowl pep rally that's at noon at Justin Herman plaza and Market Street that's a famous street in San Francisco it's free and it's public and a chance for fans to have a great time middle of the later on in the evening at least I'll dare in on on the west coast that is the bowl bash at the bay that again will be open to the public in that it'll be it'll be a good time at some located at oracle park now I'm not sure exactly where that you want that's twenty four Willie Mays plaza that's good for the giants play I have a baseball team so that'll be that'll be fun and and you know the the good times continue to roll on the the following morning well they do that's the game day run club so that happens there actually embarking from embark could there plaza I think I said that correctly and the guys are staying at the Hyatt regency and so they're gonna run on over to the where all the action is happening the run is open to everyone it's four miles so you have to be ambitious to join in that activity well I think it's important to to give a little bit of history of this game date run club it's actually hosted by you'll vie athletic director Josh women he threw this out on social media a while ago didn't know how would go but he's a fat guy he played at the university of Illinois and now he's the athletic director down there in Champaign so sorry I wanted to go for a run on game day he does it every morning prior to the games and the next thing you know as is usually the case with social media this thing catches fire so all the sudden people started running with him so this is the game day run again brought to you by the athletic director Josh women who was just just very very passionate not only about the football team you know which he played on which just anything involving a line I sports he's he's front and center cheering them on so that'll be fun Embarcadero plaza a huge tour stop in San Francisco so that'll be it'll be fun to watch get the people's feedback on on how that goes well right in place with that run and that's a stress reliever you know much like the guys traveling to Alcatraz and going to the game tonight and all of that it's a stress reliever but you can't stay too late at all the pregame activities if you're gonna run for my word to the wise there's also a pre game party looks like I'm the game day at ten AM yeah so that'll be a good time as well and you know as we said that we think that we think that tell you my fans are gonna be out there in full force the they travel well and in that you know nothing like going through a bit of some lean years to make a G. P. people's interest and get out there and support you're fighting a lot of little be fun three one two five nine one eighty nine hundred if you got a prediction on the red box bowl again as the fighting Illini face the California golden bears or you know any of the any of the bowl games still yet to come in fact one E. is under way it is the peach bowl chick fillet people that is between the top rank LSU Tigers and the fourth ranked Oklahoma Sooners and I think Justin said he pretty made a bold prediction he said that Ellis you wearing fifty up on the Sooners I think this game at least is the way it's playing out right now is going to be a little bit closer than predicted Ellis you just scored it's still in the first quarter you're about ready to go up fourteen seven on the Sooners the but the big one tonight in in our minds Susan second ranked Ohio state at thirteen and no big ten this year taking on three Clemson that's going to be a that's gonna be a big match up it's going to be big and like you said a lot of these these games today really too close to call our I I don't even think he the experts know exactly who's gonna win who's gonna who's gonna make it yeah I I just don't you know the so called the so called experts they didn't really do much by Illinois this year with some other point spreads and how they kind of I guess disrespected them I would like to say well Shalom right exactly so yeah again the marquee matchup is going to be is is going to be huge and it just kind of a little bit of a history of claims and and Ohio state the Ohio state they've got they've got a little bit on the line here not just the fact that they want to win and go on to the national championship but the last time they faced constant was back in two thousand sixteen it was new year's eve out in Glendale Arizona Clemson crush them thirty one to nothing in urban Meyer said after the game not only do we embarrass ourselves in Paris the whole state of Ohio well our you got that right yeah and this is one of their first appearances in this poll are college football playoff to have their own my time I'm talking about Oklahoma part yeah I know that's okay yeah no we're do where does did send stuff to keep track of these days but look that's gonna be a good game of the one that's going on right now is Ellis you and Oklahoma hi you know it's just in these teams are so evenly matched we talked about it earlier I don't think it's you know overstating its when you say that I really like the top four teams this year and as they kinda you know get get themselves into that national championship of formation I think it's some we want to go with I think it'll be Ellis you're not really going out on a limb here because they're also even the match I think it'll be Ellis you and climbs in in the championship game just we think you're racing around so somebody thank I'm going with Justin we have I said I know but just since our fabulous producer he is just a few more minutes to go here wanna thank Brian Barnhart he joined us earlier he calls the games for the university of Illinois does football and basketball which by the way you can also hear basketball on WLS AM eight ninety and just really looking forward to the weekend to the game absolutely and we have basketball tomorrow right we do skip all tomorrow tomorrow night and other well Hey we're talking we're we're in need deep in football talking red box full everybody's so excited that we're going bowling we're going bowling for the first time since twenty fourteen and we're all excited about that and you can hear both football and basketball right here on WLS AM eight ninety pregame started to write does yeah warm the fans are going to warm the faithful examines so that's the time to tune in yeah definitely that's definitely the time to tune in and and then we have more sports programming for you and full coverage of your fighting Alaina North Carolina agency there you go that's to start though I for some reason I have to start time mixed up one o'clock so the pre game will be a little bit in advance of that and you know since Brian is out in San Francisco I think a good friend Scott Beatty who join us on the show before you might be doing the call of this game I don't know but I I think you might and we'll get on him because it's so it should be decent game and then you just touching on basketball briefly since we we started talking about it then after this game against North Carolina agency of finding a line I really get into the bulk of the big ten schedule after the first of the year on January second more specifically they take on Michigan state Purdue Wisconsin writers northwestern that's an instance big ten team then they played two again Michigan Minnesota Iowa and then you know then it's obviously it's conference schedule so it'll be interesting to see they they're off to a good start as well they are they absolutely are and how we should thanks god also for his contributions and helping us out during football season yeah yeah well he's he is good and he falls in on a daily basis and really knows the ins and outs of a few of our football and I wanna call amount for predicting that you know you know I was gonna we were all day we were all depressed at one point in the season it was kind of a roller coaster season has we've touched upon and he did he did say the vibe down here is not good he did say that yeah well if is down in champagne right right my special thanks first of all to Justin we only who's helped out with the shows yes we did two during the bye weeks this season and then this one leading into the red box ball again two o'clock pregame on WLS AM eight ninety on Monday as the fighting a line I get set to take on the cal bears twenty one oh six and six cal bears seven five on the season

"rose bowl" Discussed on Afternoons with Marcellus & Kelvin

"Since since you clearly are so anti Lakers town. Well, clearly, it's you're not going to be able to win the. City over until you sort of see the light on the purple, and listen, you know, I tell you this for all the people that think that since I arrived here. There's a lot of good things happening in Los Angeles. Okay. Okay. Let's start with two dodgers World Series a Rose Bowl appearance by USC. Right. Yeah. How they look it. Now. I mean, that's fine. They hadn't been to Rose Bowl stage. Don't take credit for USC some defense with you the Rose Bowl in a minute but to dodgers World Series. Okay. Lebron's ear. That's kind of a big deal. I feel like right? And you did you did account for at least one percent of that from your Miami? Can I don't think there's any question? Yeah. Is following me? The main thing is the maze. NBC's louis. I'm not taking credit for that one. And the Rams are the Super Bowl. I mean, we serious. I I am the anti as as people astutely pointed out on my Twitter, as I've mentioned this before I am the anti Matz, somebody somebody that that no that works on liquor broadcast. I approached me and said, what is the Donal hate the Lakers. And I try to explain to my mom. I'm like, look, I don't think he does. I think he's just he's he's especially when I'm on with him. He's there's there's part of him. That's just trying to tweak me, and he's kind taken up his definitely that. And he's taken a position. But he really like he really recognizes what a situation this is. And, but you know, but I'm not sure that the stuff that you've been saying today. I don't know. I said today. I had to I had to sort of convince you about all of about how many situations in the NBA are actually better than the Lakers. But I think those are two different. I had to I had to prove that to you, which which was which I know you actually think, but what you were saying on the air lectures separate conversations, the fact that I think that the Lakers. I mean, I've said a million times that I think the Lakers are probably conference finals team. I actually I just said it like an hour ago because we were talking about Luke. And I think that if the expectation is to get just to the conference finals, I would sign off on that. I feel like they can get there and Luke can do that. But what I would say is those are two different conversations because of this. Are the Lakers in a better situation than almost any other Western Conference team? Yeah. I would say so I mean outside the warriors clearly. Hold on. But you could make the you can make the case the nuggets over the next five years is going to be pretty awesome to deal with if Michael porter jR, pans out. Right. Like, I think that's that's something you have to kind of wait and see on. But because they need a wing player, and if he can provide like people thought that guy was going to be a stunned before he got hurt, you know, going into college or whatever. So if you give me any semblance of what people thought he was going to be I think that the nuggets are in really good shape. They're going to be a team to reckon with moving forward, but the different conversation, and maybe we were having two different conversations. And we didn't know it what I was simply stating was that. This isn't a given that the Lakers are going to land one of these big free agents. Just because you have the cap space doesn't mean it's going to happen..
