"Like you mentioned long-range is a little easier. Is there a constraint on which cells? Now there really isn't now that we have this individual cell guidance we can target any individual kind of cell very reliably. And so now to your question of scale, how far can we go? Well, things are moving quickly. It's hard to say. We can access individual cells across the entire brain now. If you look ten, 20 years in the future, I think we'll surprise ourselves, but the fact that we're already able to cause specific perceptions to happen in a specific actions means we're essentially where we want to be and now it's a matter of just. More experiments, more discoveries, but the basic principles are clear now the basic capabilities is there. Is there pathway to doing the same for humans? Optogenetics is primarily it's a discovery tool that really is well suited for use in mice and rats and monkeys because it involves putting in a gene. And also delivering light. And those are two things that you can do in human beings. But you'd want to do in a very careful way. Now that said, there is actually just less than a year ago. My friend botan rosca in Switzerland, he did the first human optogenetics therapy. And he published this in the journal, nature of medicine. So about ten, 12 years ago, he and I published a paper together where we gave him one of our optogenetic tools, one of these light activated regulators of ion flow. These are called microbial opsins, by the way, opsins. And he put one of those into an extracted retina from a human being who had died, so it was a cadaveric retina. And he was able to show that optical control in this paper. Was able to turn on or off individual cells in the human retina. So that was a while back. He spent about ten years of going through all the regulatory hoops and hurdles and going through primate studies. And finally, he was able to take a human being with a retinal degeneration syndrome. So someone who was blind in both eyes. And he gave a one of these opsins into one eye of this human being who was blind. And with the goal of conferring light sensitivity onto this retina that was not able to see light. And he was able to make this person see through that eye. So he took a mine first and then the blind person could see now, could reach for objects, selectively, on a table, and he published this in nature medicine. And that's an amazing thing. Do you know the title of the pit? What's his name again? Can you look up the nature paper? Nature medicine? I need your medicine. So that's sort of proof of principle. Now the retina is very accessible. It's near the surface. You can use natural light, or you can use brighter natural light..

"Learning their names You can choose to be kind is another one of the strategies that I'm sorry for my singing I know it's terrible but that's an episode of Daniel Tiger where he actually gets to be king for a day King Friday makes Daniel king for the day in a playful way And first Daniel thinks being a McCain is all about being in charge and telling people what to do and but he quickly learns that the most important part of being king is being kind and taking care of the neighborhood And that takes us to takeaway number two make small kind gestures a daily practice You could ask your partner or kids to help pick flowers from your garden to give a new neighbor a bouquet or simply introduce yourself when you see them out for a walk Once upon a time in 2013 the before times a chain of generosity led over 200 people to pay a little kindness forward There was this one instance in Winnipeg in Canada It's a local Tim Hortons One driver decided to pay for the meal or the coffee of the driver behind him at the drive through And then that driver was so grateful he decided to pay for the driver behind him That was Marta de rosca She's a science journalist and author of growing young pal friendship optimism and kindness can help you live to 100 I reached out to Marta to help me better understand how taking care of our neighbors positively impacts our well-being For a very long time I've been interested in how to live healthy and long but I've been approaching it before in the classic ways Diet exercise And then it's work I started coming across more and more studies showing that actually our mental health our mental habits as well our social behaviors moderate at least as much for our longevity and health as diet and exercise But.

"Now they has been talk about reuse and repurpose of battery. So that can maybe go into houses that i need to take care of a certain volume of batteries. And then even once. I've been repurpose into house is only going to loss for seventy years so cypher. Just for example. A veteran lost ten years in the call gets repurpose gets put in a house at lost for another ten or fifteen years. What happens to that battery at the end of the twenty or twenty five years. What are the emissions in trying to recycle those elements and put that back into a way that can either be despised off or recycled back into the crash of a new battery. All repurpose into some other full. That's why i think for electric vehicles. The is definitely a place for electric vehicles. But i think they're going to find it very difficult to have say all passenger 'cause replaced with electric vehicles because the volume of batteries. That are going to be coming back. In the end of a ten year period is so huge and to manage the that restocking repurposing of all. Those batteries is going to be tremendously difficult. Now we've even seen for ties. Ties remains the budget. Problem for automotive manufacturing in this fisher price like the. Us is huge piles of ties that no one knows what to do with what's going to happen too ause. It's the same challenge. What are we going to do with these batteries. At at end of lav question for john is why don't have the ultimate respect for. I think they're an amazing company. And that's the number one. Globally slight between twitter and volkswagen is who is number one but to do it from a long term sustainable business model perspective. Why do you think toyota has not gone down the road of general motors by saying we're gonna electrify everything not gonna have any ice engines and we're not gonna go. We put everything into this basket. Well i think a lot of the manufacturers while they upfront they talking about putting every hundred percent going into a lot of them stole doing development work in the back dole on us top engines more efficient diesel engines. So there's a lot of other work in going on. I think all of them have one hundred percent everything into one mosque. And that's everything is going to go to the electric vehicle. you know. I could be wrong. But i think they still. There's still a lot of development to of work hang on just in case things done quashed workout on electric vehicles because other big be with electric vehicles is the rare earth metals. We already have major issues with semiconductors. Because they've been conduct has get used in. My finds is a lot of areas with. I starting to get us. And there's a shortage and you starting to now that companies into mon- seabeds which will have a major impact on the environment if the really escalated. There's got to be even more damage than vomit and it's going to push up the price of these rare metals. And where you're gonna find those and we and where do they need to be mon. From as rosca companies will look for opportunities to make a buck and salt mining areas. That probably should ever be mont. So it's it's something we need to think about. And what will be that impact and hodgin. Where do you see the hydrogen-fuel-cell because tired of obviously they're investing in hydrogen. He's hard rogen the to leapfrog the well. I think things are hydrogen will definitely play a part. And that's all. I'm saying i think will be the and there'll be a price for them and they'll be applies for hydrogen but way that's it's blue green hydrogen. That's where the device will come in to make sure that it's it's green harder because i believe blue. Hydrogen is still a lot of emissions and evolve damage in the creation of new hydrogen..

"It's natural that it would get processed there but we know the geography and we also know that there's been a big buildup in these facilities since gina. So where does that conversation go. As far as location. We know that the climate picture going forward well. The federal government the epa. The state of louisiana should be involved in this conversation. The problem is these everything we discussed means jobs down there and that is the inherent conflict. You're in eastern texas and western louisiana that there's gas there's oil there's chemicals there's jobs there's plants and if we the people want them to be safer but say having them there. It means a lot of prosperity okay. Llc she msnbc anchor and economics correspondent. Thanks always my pleasure. John have you been looking to restart your health routine. Maybe lose some of those pandemic pounds. Eat more superfoods or get more exercise. Those all may be good things to do but science writer. Martha's rosca argues in terms of living longer. Those changes probably won't help you as much as improving your connections to other people and fact relationships volunteering and simple acts of kindness can help with the process of growing young. That's the title of her new book. And in i spoke with. Martha's rosca via skype so there's a lot of data in your book and like any good journalist. You went on this quest to get scientific answers. Let's talk for a moment about the science. Behind your argument that human contact is more beneficial than say getting more exercise. You illustrate this by explaining how the mind communicates with the body especially when we're under stress. Say more so you know. Humans are social apes we evolved to be surrounded by adder is of our tribe and this when our bodies function the best. When you think about it you know in our evolutionary past. When we were alone it usually meant that we were alone on the savannah so potentially facing of dangers are the lions accidents. That could happen to us and as such we were in a state of stress so our bodies adapted to recognize whether we are safe with arteries or maybe they should be preparing for accidents for predators. And so on so so we have lots of different systems. Nari body for example. The fight or flight response The hp access so-called hypothermic Adrenal access that starts in the signal in your brain. That tells you that there is a reason to be stressed. And then sends all soup of hormones throughout your body. Basically triggering other swan song and all this hormones. Prepare your body to fight and to phase all those dangerous when you are alone. The problem is debts these days hours. Treasuries are very very different. We are chronically stressed by thanks mortgages. You know School reports traffic and work issues. And all these systems so the hp axes the sympathetic nervous system as well. They're chronically activated when you say chronically activated what you mean is that it is basically all the time. We're we're in this fight or flight or the hba accesses is activated and that does something very specific to our bodies exactly the oldest hormones such as cortisol stress. Hormone our adrenalin. They keep flooding our bodies the whole time and with all the mental downstream effects such as for example higher risk of diabetes or vascular disease and at the same time though what we also get from being with other people are so cold social hormones so things such as oxytocin or serotonin endorphins suppressant. Which both make us feel trusting and connected to our people but also have very real downstream effects on our health so social connection helps improve our hormone levels and you give several examples. But there's one the rosetto effect this is an actual place where the death rate at one time was about thirty five percent lower than the general population. They weren't particularly healthy people by western standards. But you're saying they had deep social connections yes so basically. Nobody was dying of heart attacks. Boxing rosetto which started really attracting attention of scientists and doctors back in the nineteen sixties and. We'll they have discovered. It was not the diets note. Eddie lifestyle habits because there were smoking there were drinking. You know and they also didn't have anything particular in jeans but what was special about the place. Was the community so people derry for example had twenty two civic organizations even though there are only two thousand inhabitants. They're constantly meeting each other. They were constantly visiting neighbors. They were really taking care of the public. Space having parties Volunteering helping each other out. And most likely this was what caused this amazing health of the inhabitants and the doctors and researchers back than also predicted. That were they to ever abandon their ways. Their health would deteriorate as well and unfortunately this exactly what happens. Generations narrations later in the seventies and eighties and so on and when people started pursuing the so-called american dream and living in the suburbs buying cars working long hours and stopped being so connected to their community their health also just went back to american average but martha this is especially resonant to me it got me thinking about church groups during this pandemic who have argued that they are essential because they offer a deep sense of community. I mean we learned from your book. That human connection is not just a human want. It's a human need. And all i could think in reading your book is. How do we do this when we can't do it. In the traditional ways we used to right now is this social isolation shortening all of our lives. I'm hopeful that it's not because it's quiet temporary state you know if it will something that we had to live with for years. I would be much more worried. It is true that we need the connection that loneliness has very serious mental effects in our help. People who are lonely have higher blood pressure. They have different gene expression in when it comes to concern for instance so is very very serious issue but on on the other hand you know there are waste still connect even in condemning times. No you can call. You can volunteer your online as well..

But what what what would it mean to you. do you think something. I think anytime you know anytime anybody wants in dp first thing that i think about is that means that teams went right. I mean the team's doing a great job of winning and doing everything he can. I think also too. That's my number. One objective is to be the greatest. All time wins. Many games as possible in super bowls too. So you best plan my best. Got really great chances. You know doing some special this year not the wrestling has too and so it's a team effort. This game is so special. Such a team effort. Everybody making plays guys like david moore mission that mazen catch the corner to tone in the silent moon walk into the pipeline that that was just a you know that those efforts team moments that allow players do special things and i think know i. I got a credit my teammates on that i think more than anything else though You know for me what it means. It's just that you know all the off-season work all the training all the time you spend all the focus all the hours upon hours all the all the yuna flights you know and things that you've done just to sit down along with somebody and talk to them about the game football and spend some quality time with people i think that's that's where that's where he does moments really Show up. I think i think that all that hard work in all the time shot thrown in a bucket and your young kid you know. All all makes a difference. I think more important though. I wanna win this week. Don't take it on you know. Just stay stay focused and do that. I know that's what it takes to be grazed to stay in the moment. St stay neutral not to get too hot in at high expectations. So are note. Everyone knows repeats. The same thing which is energy. I could probably tell. I have love energy. When i'm teaching a lot of energy when i'm playing sports a lot of energy and working a lot of energy and that could be really annoying to live with for sure my wife and kids but i would say i think positive. Energy attracts other positive. Energy causes people to be more positive in nature. And and i think that it causes people. "I sat down with the head honcho. We had a meal. And i just want look nothing against bond uchi. I just cannot do this. I can't i won't like i just not gonna do it. So don't breach. Sign him for another and he's like okay and then like two weeks. Later resigned resigned him. But you sow radio works so then i just went home and stayed home and that right and then i did the math like you have to make these certa calculated decisions in your life like there. The thing was well. If you stay home than they're just gonna fire you. But i was like and then give the morning show to danny. They're not gonna do that so i knew they weren't going to do that so i just stayed home and I never i didn't wake up before ten a. m. i didn't listen. I didn't pick up my phone. I didn't do anything and at some point in the middle of my radio. Silence the agents calling and the executives calling and everyone calling at some point. There is a ring on my gate and it was jimmy. If you're standing there and he said what's going on you're not picking up your phone and i go. Yeah i'm not. I'm gonna i'm out. Just i'm just letting him sit with their feelings. I don't want to deal with these guys and he goes. Well pick up your fucking phone. They never stopped calling me. Fair counts. yeah tune into those pills. You missed three of the most uncomfortable days in my life. Oh yeah it was very tough being. Because it was danny in the chair theresa and me and to those who are in studio shows. It was the end of the year to those in studio shows. Where i think danny give out his phone number like on the air and just started answering the cell. It was it was. It was morning zoo radio but all all the gates had been opened and then the third show was a live show. Yeah where does it is horrible. No horrible in the city of industry it was. It was your frog. I thought that was the first show you guys did. That was the last show of the show the year and it was so uncomfortable near member. First of all the crowd was confused. I never showed up was confused. The you weren't there. We'll happening the the element of the crowd. That was super excited. The danny was hosting was an unpleasant element of the crowd. A small thankfully but unpleasant and then on top of that jack silver kept taking to the stage to be like the hype man. Like every time danny would throw a commercial or whatever you do jack would come out like you're grabbing and does come out like yeah like trying to get people to cloud being it was. It was one of the more comfortable moments of my in front of a live audience. Now do you remember who the guest was for that show we need. It was dana up on the. Da's he just sat up there with the look of deer in the headlights. Get the fuck outta here. Please chris you can dig for this. I mean dig. But there's a picture of dana looking extremely uncomfortable. Confused bewildered off an off mic moment. He's going i going on. I felt bad for everybody. But i still realize it's the only way i'm going to get this done show up. I sent you an email while while you were doing your your your strike and i sent you an email saying look. I just want you to know that. I work for you. So i'm gonna. I'm gonna. I'm gonna wait this out with you but please come back danny. Well danny ain't taking it anchorage. So danny they ended up sliding him wedging him in the afternoons for one hour which does not happen in radio. Nobody has a one hour random because once he signed his contract and didn't have anything to do in the morning show. They had to get their money out of him so they slid him in. And i'm sure. I'm sure you know jack was a big fan. I don't use a nice guy dan. Yeah oh yeah nice guy. Just you wouldn't want him to be your airplane pilot or your morning show sidekick or co hosts. Yeah i like the like danny plenty so there was that Rob this rob. Rob send you the timeline from the cbs radio. Yeah so i asked him about your guys. History together now rob after he rob was let go a month after i got on the air well according to bone well according to this all right. So he says that's president of cbs radio. I was tasked with the impossible job of replacing howard stern. Yeah the smartest idea. I had was to hire adam to take over the western hemisphere of these united states with jimmy. Kimmel's my adviser. I pay these boys zillions of dollars to forge the future of morning radio. I told the suits in l. a. They weren't allowed to talk to add them for the first six months. They hated me. But i was right. We hired mike august and a team of more than a dozen warriors. Who needed time to help. Adam kick ass you whiffed on a couple of things. Moon vests ran. Cbs may he rest in fucking unemployment. He tossed me out one day with over two hundred other souls as they begin to dismantle the house that howard built. I flew out to la for lunch with adam and tell them once i was gone and unable to protect him they would come gunning for him next. Enter on duty and the beginning of the end for radio and the beginning of the empire he built as the god of podcasting and seen. Oh wow thanks for of how matic we we did. Well we did well. And all the markets wherein number one and like. I said vegas and seattle and many portland. We're number one most places we'd worked our way up to number maybe four in los angeles. Because i do remember i got bonus checks from all the other markets maybe phoenix vegas or something where we were number one and right before the end that got my first bonus ratings check for la so we were actually doing well everywhere. So it wasn't it wasn't a failure per se like wasn't a ratings issue. There was a money issue was a jukebox. Well for the for the station. They couldn't afford to pay five morning. Shows a day anymore. Right i mean it was just talk. Yeah also i think the two thousand eight year was our best year on the radio. They good things were clicking. And you know the danny out we got theresa and rosca out rosca. Hansie was producing. She was purdue everybody loved each other. It was a joy to come to work every day. Yeah avoca yeah. Big tap hindsight's twenty twenty right. So that's story but we can get into. I'm wondering david lee roth with. I wanna some stories about that guy. And also i'm curious. How long rover lasted till i. I don't really know never interviewed david. Lee roth yeah i think i have have And do you remember. Will you wouldn't. I don't know if you even aware. Did you know before you actually took over live. They were just playing the audio book in like there was like a couple days before you actually went live and i would turn it on and i go well adams really monologue ing and it took me a little bit to realize that they were playing the audio book book number. The car. what they were doing is there. Were playing a bunch of preprogramed. Stuff i did. I remember going into the studio and they'd go. What's your take on the any audio because the game. Who Put the Baby in King Cake?

"We Cubans Mark Our holidays with glee cheer and often mouth watering desserts. Entered the New Orleans King. Cake the frosted coffee cake like sweet roll typically eaten between January sixth and fat Tuesday. Which is the day before lent begins? It's a staple of the Mardi gras season for those unfamiliar with this festive dessert. The New Orleans version is often made of rich Danish style dough braided and shaped into a large ring in often with one or a variety of fillings. Think cinnamon sugar chocolate. Raspberry preserves chopped sugar cons or sweetened. Cream cheese it's usually covered in a suite glazer frosting and decorated with Gold Green and purple sugar or icing and of course hidden somewhere within the tender layers of this frosted treat is a small plastic baby which sounds real weird if you're unfamiliar so let's back up a little. Because the origins of King cake go way back and yes. There are kings involved. Kim Cake derives from the holiday. Three Kings Day also called tiffany which is a Christian Feast Day celebrated on January sixth with the day after the Twelfth Day Christmas this holiday celebrates the Biblical Tale of the Three Kings Aka. Three wise men or madge by visiting the baby. Jesus it kicks off the Mardi Gras or carnival season which lasts until the first day of lent which is a moving holiday that falls forty days before Easter. Anyway the three kings are. Why can cakes are a seasonal treats in the shape of a crown or a more or less circular band anyway? Those three colors decorated with our symbolic purple for justice. Green for faith and gold for power and tradition holds that the plastic baby in the cake represents Jesus just as Jesus showed himself to the three wise men he will show himself to those enjoying king cake. Whoever finds the baby in there slice is crowned King or Queen for a day or hosts the next Mardi gras celebration or at least buys the cake next year? It's a lucky. Token other Tokens Coins. Peas. Pecans beans were what was up in the past and may still show up hundreds of thousands of king cakes or sold at New Orleans Mardi gras season. I couldn't track down a firm total but the big commercial bakeries ramp up to producing three thousand five hundred king cakes per day. Their busiest the Danish style dough is the most popular. But it's not the only kind either flakier or fluffier dough can sometimes be found and New Orleans isn't the only place to serve king cakes by far in northern France. You can find glut their Roy a flaky. Puff Pastry was sweet almond. Filling Bulgaria and Greece have similar dishes traditionally served around the New Year but the New Orleans. Pancake is closer to the Toda. Roy from southern France made with Brioche and the Rosca de raise from Spain a ring of sweet bread topped with icing and candied fruit. Which makes sense given these Spanish and southern French settlers and colonists who got the city started in the seventeen hundreds but Mardi gras and other carnival celebrations have roots. That go way back. People have been celebrating the end of winter and the return of longer warmer days up forever. Since the first brave human dared to celebrate ancient Babylonia may have held first Carnival Circuit Two thousand six hundred BC E. This was a festival that celebrated Mirth and change through satire by making a show of role reversals. There would be a parade through the streets. A pair of peasants would be royalty for the day and royalty would act like fools pranks played. Folks would wear costumes depicting social classes other than their own and everyone partied. Sound a little familiar. These traditions were incorporated into and or disseminated through Grecian and Roman cultural traditions. The first king cakes make all the way back ancient Rome. As part of the celebration of Saturnalia. A Winter Solstice and harvest festival a pastry would be baked with the fava bean hidden inside and the finder would be named king for the day. The tradition became a part of epiphany celebrations in the Middle Ages. The fava bean was sometimes replaced by porcelain token of a crowned head to take some of the pagan out of it. When Spain France spread their outposts to the Americas the king tradition came with them and took on a life of Zone particularly in New Orleans. The baby trinket didn't come along until a bakery called Mackenzie's came up with the idea in the nineteen fifties. At first these figures were made out of porcelain and baked inside the cake. But we're eventually replaced with plastic which comes alongside the cake due to concerns about baking plastic. These early cakes were more brioche like or pedals they like and didn't have filling. That didn't come around until the nineteen eighties as acres began adding more eggs and sugar to the recipes or straight up switching to Danish pastry recipes. An anecdotal tail puts the first commercial. Filled can cakes in New Orleans tonight. Eighty-three according to Baker Jones semen that year baked four filled cakes? Her husband took one to work and they got twenty five calls about filled cakes within thirty minutes through the nineteen eighties and nineties. Cajun and creole food became national trends and shipping technology improved as well allowing for more or less affordable overnight shipping then in two thousand four the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina honed New Orleans sense of community history and pride and both local and national hunger for these traditional dishes which means that celebrates have a veritable glut of kinky options today. Miniature king cakes can kick doughnuts. Can Kate Vodka can take bourbon? Milk Punch can kick smoothies and of course in a city that loves the party. A whole can cake festival held in late. January
