The Eric Metaxas Show
A highlight from John Zmirak
"Hey there, folks. Welcome to the program. I believe it's Monday. Chris, is it Monday? Check your watch. It is Monday. It's Monday. First of all, we decided to start the week off with a bang. His name is John Zmierak. Everywhere I go, people say, I love John Zmierak. I love John Zmierak. I say, you're welcome. Zmierak is awesome. We're going to talk to him about everything. He's like a human kraken, I like to say. Yes, like a human kraken. It has to be released carefully and not too often. We got Zmierak coming up. A lot of news here, folks, before we get to John Zmierak. Of course, we're going to talk to John Zmierak about all kinds of news. I'm not sure who we have in an hour or two today. It might be Rosario Butterfield, who has a new book out. And we have Jennifer Morris as well. It might be Jennifer Morris, who has a book out. Oh, my gosh, we got some heroes on this program. It's such a privilege over the years to have gotten to know these wonderful people and to have them on this program and to bring them to you, my listening audience or viewing audience, if you're watching this on on Rumble or or whatever. But OK, some big news. I believe I mentioned it last week, but my book Letter to the American Church has struck a nerve around the country. Thank God. And people are giving it to their pastors. And this has been going on for a year. I've never been busier, which is good and bad. So please pray for me because it's a stressful time. But the wonderful news is that a documentary film has been made called Letter to the American Church based on my book, Letter to the American Church. The trailer I saw the trailer the other day I was with Charlie Kirk at TPA USA Faith at a pastor's conference in San Diego. And I just want to say that the trailer is shorter than the film, but it's intense. And everyone raved about it. And I'm very excited about this. If you want to see the trailer, we if you get my email, which is the Eric Metaxas dot com, the newsletter, I'm pretty sure we sent it out this morning. It did go out this morning. You can also go to Letter to the American Church dot com as well. And we will be I'll be posting it on Twitter, probably on Instagram. But it's so exciting to think that the message, which I want to say is not my message, folks. This is what I believe God is saying to his people. And we are just his vessels. But it's about waking up the American Church in the way that the German church did not wake up in time. And that's a big deal. It's a very big deal that we would kind of act like, well, weird stuff could happen in the past, but, you know, everything's cool here. No, everything's not cool. And God is calling us to wake up and to get involved in everything. And, you know, it's an interesting thing because we know that the state, the government is not supposed to have any involvement in the church. We know that. But the church is supposed to have every kind of involvement in the government and politics. We who are in the church are supposed to bring God's values into every part of the culture to propose those values by getting candidates elected who share those values to the best of our ability. OK, we're not going to ever find a candidate that agrees with us on everything, but it's all very important and we're in a very, very crucial time. So the idea that this documentary will be out, probably.

"But it was becoming that part of that 2% and raising my daughter and then having the jobs and then having the connections and just what was the first book, what was the name of it? It was only your fire. And so I published it for a short period of time, and then it was one of those things that it was just putting my learnings from my past. The challenges that I had with my mom, the challenges that I have as a mom. You know, the challenges that I had with the jobs, you know? And then they look forward. And then the second one that E was like, you need to have it my March 4th. Was know your worth. And it's kind of helping women and actually turns out that a lot more men than women read my books. Yeah, it's crazy. We have worth issues too. I know. You know, I honestly, I never thought that I was writing for men. So we've talked quite a bit about Nikki and your my big baby girl. Yeah, you're not a baby anymore. She'll be 27. But you also have two other children. I do. And so we really haven't discussed your life during that time and how they came about and. Well, we all know how they came about. We know technically how they came about. What your life was like then and we haven't filled in that gap of your life with your two other children. So how does all that fit in? So when I was working at Jackson properties, I think it was like a year end or something like that. I started dating and then like a year or two after probably about a year after then I had Gabe. And totally on plan, you know, that's my precious boy. You know how the kids always fight about who's the favorite child. And nobody can give in on that. Everybody has a strength and weaknesses. And I'm always like, well, you're my favorite boy. You can get away with that. Yeah, I could get away with that. And so I had him and then two years later, I had Emma. And so I was in a relationship with her dad for 9 years or so. And it ended, you know, we went our separate ways.

"So we would have groups and I completed it. 2005, you meet a guy named Irwin Jackson and you start working at Jackson properties. Does anybody know who or when Jackson is? I think most of our listeners will know who the doctor Jackson is. Love him. So you served many roles there over the last 17 years or so. So tell us about your job about Jackson properties and what it is like to work for rejection. So I kind of tell people I was like, I just run Irwin's empire, right? That's what I do. You know, I don't have titles. We don't really have titles. And whatever I tell people, I was like, if you want to call me CEO of VP, business manager, I don't really care. I said, the description of my job is from maggots to bankers and politicians. Anywhere in between. I do it all. All the sales of the marketing or the outside stuff or the maintenance or the contractors, everything and anything. So how do you get started? Because you owned property and you kind of understood the world or I got so lucky. I answered an ad in the paper. Back then I'd have to go to the interviews with stray hair. Again, go back to the device. You do, you're straightening your hair. I'm straight. Well, not every day. Just for anyone. I mean, for interviews. Just for interviews, yeah. Because you can't look to Hispanic. Because people don't know what the hell I am. And then it makes it used to make people uncomfortable. So it just was easier. I hate to say this word, but I could pass. In either way, I've been in situations where I'm like, oh my God, those people have no idea who I am or like, you know. So passing is like a tan white person. I remember this guy telling me that I just saw you were the white girl with a tan. You had applied in a newspaper ad and you had because you had owned some properties and you understood what was going on. So he told me later on that there was another girl that was 'cause I remember I was coming from insurance. I didn't. On paper, you wouldn't be super qualified. Exactly on paper. Nothing. But then in my resume, it didn't even have in there that I was an investor that I owned at that time for houses or something like that. That's my personal stuff, right? When him and I started talking and I said, oh yeah, I understand so then I shared about my properties my rentals and how it got it and then later on apparently there was someone else that was more qualified but it takes a different stomach to be a real estate investor and I have that stomach. So that's why he was like no, you know what it takes because you have it. And I've been with him ever since. Right. Yeah, I started at the basing street office, 7 14 base in street. And then now we're in Jackson bluff. So for people who don't know, tell us what Jackson properties is all about. What does the company do? So we do off campus student housing.

"With school, you could have gone anywhere done anything. What made you want to stay here? I could have without a kid. I had, so all the friends that I had that left, they went back to family. Or they went with the financial support of family. I didn't have that. I had to move somewhere and get the job. And back then, it wasn't as easy to get a job outside of the city you were in. You either had to move. And I did. I did consider it. I looked into North Carolina. I looked into Atlanta. I looked into Orlando. But I was not going to sacrifice my daughter. So I just stayed and made it work. And then after a while, I started discovering all the things that Tallahassee had. And I started enjoying it and things I thought. So ironic because I never in a million years thought I would ever live in Tallahassee, right? Till this day, people are like, why are you there? What? I mean, look at you, you're Hispanic, you're this, you're alive or this, you're full of life, like, why are you there? And I'm like, I have learned to love this place. All right, and during this general time period, you did earn an MBA. I did. Right. So what was your motivation to do that? You know, I don't think I knew better. I think it was just checking the box, just trying to get better jobs, just trying to, you know, because that's not easy to get. I mean, that's a big deal. And it is. I guess looking back, it is. And I wanted it to be one of the top 25 schools at the time. And Florida say what's one of them, but I didn't want to go back to Florida because not because I had already done Florida state, right? I was like, let me do something different. Sure. And at that point, I was working for taking care of my kid. And I had tried. I tried going back to school several times with a masters in communications, wasn't really liking it. I tried med school, not admissions person, but the counselor said, you have too many distractions in your life. Also known as my kid. So, yeah. It's kind of odd judgment to make for you. Oh, it's not, because I got the same judgment at Lincoln high school from the counselor when I got pregnant. Your life is over. Just go ahead and get you as far as going to college. Or even finishing school. Oh yeah. Miss Duncan was like, your life is over. You're never going to amount to anything, go get a GED. I'm like, what is wrong with these people? She literally said that. She she literally said that to me. My daughter didn't find out. When she went to Lincoln, I was like, no, I'm not going to tell you who it said that. But now it's public. It doesn't matter, but I got told that, and I was like, that's what I was told. But to me, those things don't crush me. I'm like, oh, it's just, okay, whatever you think that way, I'll make it work. I'll figure it out. So I got into Colorado state and they would send us the recorded actual classrooms and it was like Netflix. It was like the DVD. It was just like that. I would get the DVD. I would pop it in. I would listen to the class. Sometimes they had it live if they could. And then you had people all over the world and the remote parts.

"And she said, oh, well, come live with me for a little bit, and that's fine. Well, no, she didn't really mean that. So then what did I do? So what I learned from the radio stations from those people, one of my accounts, cosine and apartment for me. And he was a young kid, and he said, don't screw me over. And I would never cosign for anyone. Right. And I said, I won't let you down. I saw Brown and Brown as another of those when I'm in a position of leadership management power, whatever you want to call it. These are the things to note for. Don't do this. Do this, don't do that. So and I met good people along the way as well. Right. So, but I wouldn't go back to insurance. But it was a good job and met your needs after that. It did. I mean, I was able to buy the house that I'm still in. Through that job. I mean, I took advantage of the, was it the Great Recession? Is that what they? In like 2008, 2000. Because when I left public, I'd been invested. So they give you stock if you work a certain number of hours. So I worked for 5 years. I was vested and I had, I don't know, $3000 or something like that. And I remember talking to my daughters godmothers. Brother. And he was into real estate. And I said, hey, I have this money, what do I do? And he said, put it in real estate. So I was 25 when I bought my first House. That's an awesome time to buy real estate. If you didn't have real estate. Oh man. Let me tell you. And it was great because I don't know. I feel like I blacked out completely because I don't remember where I got this shift of all of a sudden, I'm going to do real estate. It's like golden. We are, yeah. We are just and I can't relate to a lot of the other Hispanic issues. And because living in Puerto Rico, somebody asked me a couple of days ago, I'm like, living in Puerto Rico's living in Miami. It's a big city. You've got the cars. You got everything. And of course, where I lived in Puerto Rico. Like I didn't live in the mountains or anything like that. So where I lived, it was it was city life. When I first caught here to the United States to Tallahassee, people were like, so do you guys live in tippy's? And I was like, what? Did you speak English from an early age? Yeah, so my I understood it. Back home, I went to a private school, and all my books were in English. We had an English class from the minute you start school every single school over there has an English and a Spanish class. My mom was born and raised in New York. And then they came back. So I understood it. I just didn't speak it. And so I would read the books. But I got home, it was all spam. Oh, a 100%. Yeah, yeah. So I would read the books in school and the books were in English, and then I'd have to translate it because of tests were in Spanish, you know? So that's how it was. You didn't take more than you. No, I was like, there's no way and I remember signing the first piece of paper and they were like, okay, this is a variable interest rate, and I said, what's the worst case scenario? And they said 9%. I said, I need you to put the worst case scenario with this principle amount. What is it going to be? I said, okay, I can still handle that. All right, moving on. From fiore communications, it's how I got here. A show of inspiring stories from Tallahassee area leaders, business owners and neighbors, all the challenges, opportunities, inspirations, the twists and turns of life that led them to where they are today. Everyone has a story worth telling, and I am really grateful that we get to bring a few of them to you. I truly have been changed by my conversations with these amazing people and I'm confident you will be too. I'm Dave fiori. In this episode, I speak with Ellie Rosario, business manager at Jackson properties. Ellie's story is one of rising above circumstances and obstacles to achieve her dreams, no matter how unlikely they seemed at the time. After getting pregnant during her senior year at Lincoln high school, she was told her life was over. She not only finished high school as a mom, but went on to FSU and later earned an MBA. Ellie says she was often caught in the middle of racial divides that had little room for Latinos. During one period she was homeless, jobless, and carless. But soon after pieced together enough funds to purchase multiple homes while making less than $40,000 a year. Ellie is a triathlete, has qualified for the Boston Marathon, and is a popular author and speaker. But most important to her, she is a very proud mom of three, who makes very clear that they remain her priority. We begin our conversation talking about life growing up in Puerto Rico. There was a time that we lived by the beach. And I think that time really had an impact in my life. Till this day, my grandma, my brother and I would come home from school, my grandma would take care of us when my mom was working. And we would eat, we would watch the news. And then we would go on a walk on the beach for like two hours. And then we come back and watch novellas. And then whenever the novellas were done at night. Soap operas. They're so different than the ones here though. Okay. Yeah. We want to know. And of course, to our homework, where we were pretty young. Elementary school. And then we would sit in the balcony and watch the stars and read and just listen to the waves because we were really right there.

Why You Shouldn't Edit From a Paper Script With Daisy Rosario, Executive Producer at Stitcher
"At it from a paper script. Use your ears now. This doesn't mean that you can't have a paper script available to you especially if what you are editing. Something that is heavily written anyone coming for maybe a more journalistic or narrative background is going to be used to having a script in front of them. If you come from mostly shows maybe less so but what we mean by that is just. Don't go only off the paper script you have to be able to listen to the audio as well And that's for a number of reasons you know you're also listening and audio. We're listening for tone. We're listening for pacing. We are listening for clarity and understanding but also i can tell you from experience. I've got notes from people before where the was very clear that they had only looked at the script. And not listen to the audio. When this happens you'll usually get notes. That are things that are just not even possible right like it might say. Cut the sentence That this person says but you can't cut that sentence if you listen to the audio and realized that the person is taking a breath in the middle or maybe they're speaking up or something about their inflection or the audio quality itself just means that you can't make that cut so when we say don't edit from paper script we mean don't only at it from a paper script that's there but you definitely want to also be checking with your audio. That's the way that our audiences are experiencing our medium.

The big can start to saying they are imagining but they are going through so for organizations like mine reaching being available to victims becomes a task in itself like doing out which requires community bridges. Something in that in their minds was not only harmful to. I don't know why of dangerous in some way that they saw an so. The belief starting the fast food and then went on to the social media than ended up with some people following. This person is like a terror movie. So people saying that it's a harmless but this hayden did is not because once it settles anything that is perceived as harmful can be understood as a validation of your violent behavior so you are somehow legitimize to be violent. The state has a rose here in preventing this hate narrowed this to whom spread. They are dangerous to the safety of people. Tell me what you think that. Right so what it will look like is we are making a priority to correct this glitches that are part of the coordinated response that is not coordinated at all. It's not that we are. You know setting this up from zero. We have infrastructure on. We have lost and we have forty years of trion errors so in my opinion china's as that is not acceptable that we overlook insisting errors. Can you paint a picture for me. Perhaps using either a real example an imagined example of where the system breaks down okay so protection services have different edge remorse so this is the first thing for me that should be corrected so entry yours are not roles are people are nurses injury ush and probably call settles in emergency.
