"rosarina" Discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast

"I do wonder how it'll be interesting to see sort of what his market looks like and what other front offices sort of look at us as value. It's like he's hit for so long and then he didn't and now he's hitting again and which slice of that performance is going to be determinative of his ultimate value in the trade market, but it's nice to see it's good it's good to see you know national fans deserve to have some fun stuff. So I'm glad they have some. Also nice to see. So that same day, may 20th, Joey Votto was activated from the iel, right? He had been on the COVID IL and he had not played since I think the first day of May, and we talked about him on May 2nd, I believe, or shortly thereafter, because dense and borsky had posted a story about fado at fan grafts that day, which was headlined, is this the end for Joey Votto, right? And he had tweeted out that article, and he said, on May 2nd, 5 months to go, enjoy the show. We discussed that. And we hoped that he was right. No one was rooting against Joey Votto, including Denzel borsky. We all want him to do well. And I think at the time, we didn't completely write off the chance of her resurgence because he has resurged before. Quite recently, in fact, as recently as last season, when he started slow and then ended up hitting 37 homers and changing who he was as a hitter and he is just obviously someone who thinks so much about hitting and is so smart about hitting and has proven that he can make adjustments constantly. And so never wise to write him off, but he had started extremely slowly. I think he had a 31 WRC plus when he went on the IL and he wasn't hitting fastballs and he was hitting balls on the ground and he just was not hitting anything hard. And so it was worrisome because he's 38 years old and you never know. Well, if I do my same little leaderboard here of performance since May 20th, minimum 80 plate appearances, so I said you are done Alvarez first José Ramírez second Nelson Cruz third, Aaron judge. I will also be talking about him in a minute. Number four. Yeah. Goldschmidt, Raphael, Devers. Jose Abreu, Nathaniel Lowe, Randy rosarina, and then Joey Votto. So Joey Votto has been the tenth best hitter since May 20th despite coming right off the COVID AL. He has hit two 93 four 11 6 40 since then with a one 84 WRC plus and in his case, a very reasonable and sustainable three 15 babbitt. He has walked almost as often as he is struck out. He's hit 5 homers. He's hitting the ball harder. He's hitting the ball in the air more often. He's hitting fastballs again. It is very encouraging. And it could be because he has gone back to his old bat, so one possible factor behind the slumping to start the season is that he had changed up his bat. He was using a bat with a hockey puck style knob and he thought that was going to enhance his performance and whether it was a coincidence or not, he did not perform well with that model. And so he went back to his old bat and also seemingly straightened out some other mechanical issues and he is back to looking like his old self since he got back from the AL. So I'm happy about both of these players still having a lot of life left in their bats because I very much enjoy them and everyone likes to see older players continue to do well. So Joey Votto also still pretty good hitter. It seems like. It's just such a, it's an interesting and weird job that we have been because I mean, there are look, I'm human. There are players who, for whatever reason, I don't particularly care for them. And when they don't do well, I'm like, oh, isn't that tragic? But that's like a very small list. I am most often just indifferent to performance candidly, and like at people to do well, I guess, but I don't feel strongly one way or the other. And then there are players like Votto, who not only because of the particular profile that they exhibit on the field, but the way that they talk about the game and the way that they think about the game and sort of the relationship they have to analytics, like you really want to do well. And so we find ourselves wanting to be wrong. And I don't know, I guess that's probably not the worst thing to have moments where you being wrong ends up making you happy because so often the opposite is true, but it's a weird little job we have sometimes. Yeah, right. It's the classic regression to the mean, I guess it's like the SI cover jinx in reverse. I mean, we talk about and write about notable performances, surprising performances. And often, those are the ones that are differing most from expectations and therefore you would expect things to come back to earth in one direction or another, so you talk about someone who is hitting incredibly well. Well, it would not be shocking if relative to that performance. They slump a bit and they go back to what they were projected to do or closer to that. The more fun version of that is when you talk about someone who's not hitting it all. And then they started again and if it's someone like Cruz or vado, who were easy to root for, then that's even more delightful. So wanted to just provide an update for everyone. There's still a big pulse and heartbeat left in both of those guys seemingly. Yeah, and you know who else probably has a big pulse and heartbeat is a very tall person named Darren judge. Oh, how's that for transition? Pretty good. Very good. So Aaron judge. Oh.

"Mentioned earlier in the show how much Candace still cares about her Alma mater. And if you're that into your college team, in every sport, if you're cheering for Tennessee, you hate Ella as you. And you hate old miss and this city state in Alabama and everybody else in that country. It's not just one rival. Very impressive. He's so smoothly, you were able to call out that many SEC teams. Well, those are all the ones I lived around that everyone hated. So. Nobody hates Arkansas or whatever. Yeah, they're terrible. But yeah, even if you're in that environment for several years or your career and one of those years is spent injured and you want to be out there, but when you're out there, you only lose like a handful of games, your whole career. Get passed over for conference player of the year. I don't think it's wrong even in a WNBA championship series for that to be maybe like ten to 20% of your motivation be like, we've played these guys. I've played these guys for my whole life. I've been trying to prove that I am the better here for a decade. And I again, I love it. Remember that review from the beginning of the show that listener who's still playing middle school ball? That's the sort of stuff you get on when you've got the camaraderie of being on a team and you get the familiarity of facing an opponent multiple times over your career. There's a respect there for the opponent's talent, but you know Steve after just watching two of your teams win it all. In the moment, you hate your opponents. There's no respect for the good moments that they have or the good performances that they have. You just want to lose. After the Dodgers, one game 6 and won the World Series, there was obviously this amazing elation. There was tears. There was a lot of energy. And then there was this weird moment where it hit me all at once like, wait a minute, Randy or rosarina is dope. Right. I.

"Within Major League Soccer, the rules, the regulations, how do you play what you get out of the DPs? And everybody else is playing checkers. His team was just on a different level. Bruce arena is in a different level when it comes to Major League Soccer. There's a reason he's one of the winningest coaches in Major League Soccer history. There's a reason why he keeps staying relevant as the times change. This man was a first ambient. One of the first champions. And now he's got a chance to be one of the last champions. He just keeps getting better when it comes to Major League Soccer. Right now there is no better coach. Wow, how you have turned your back on Brian schmetzer and the Seattle sounders. This is the same guy who on this very same show earlier in the year was always talking about how he was doing it without multiple. Brian smithson was the best coach in MLS. Wasn't that just what happened? What happened? Really, I think you got this. This is my little friend say facts change opinions change? Yes, yes. Facts change and opinions change. You got to give it to Robin Fraser. Nobody had Colorado rapids doing anything this year. Rosarina had a great season, but it's not nearly a surprise. Coach was for the New England for the New England revolution before Bruce. Now you know clearly not nearly said about those same players who were there today. He threw them under the bus. Do you remember where they were and my teammate Brad friedel? He's never my former Gemini. But what I'm trying to tell you is, if you want to go one 80, it's pristine. I agree with you like Robin Fraser. It's a very deserving day. Take more with less. Didn't more with less. Yes. Didn't more with last week. That was a great team there, a great team. All right. Let's move it on. Let's move along..

"But you're right, it's like, this is a gamer. The stakes are high, but the game's still happens like baseball does, and sometimes that means you get something really thrilling. And sometimes you get a four hour clunker and you still have to write a game story about it because it's the World Series, whereas if that game happened in June, we would never talk about it. Like Vancouver would not devote feature coverage to that. It just wouldn't happen. But it does give you it gives you fun little things along the way, where it's like, oh, you know, Jay gets to write about how many inexperienced relatively inexperienced pictures have started games like here you go with that, you know. Yeah, Devin gets to write about Martine Maldonado and like everyone's really fascinated by that stuff because it's the World Series whereas before you might be like, oh, do we need to write about Martin Maldonado? No. Usually not, except for. It's interesting that the Astros have kept a ran be given to service line and you're like, well, obviously he has some other qualities that are very positive. But just that little move and like him recognizing like, I'm probably not gonna get a hit. Right. I'm gonna try to do something else. It's great. Every single part of it is great. Unless you're in Atlanta fan, but even then you have to appreciate this is weird. Yeah, surely you can appreciate the strategy. I mean, maybe not right now, but in a couple of weeks, you'll be like, oh yeah, that Martine on the not a thing was good. I'm glad you reminded me of a rosarina stealing home because I had forgotten that. And I was so excited about it at the moment in the moment. I was like, this is the best, basically. Oh, yeah. I mean, a rosarito and hellmann game one and then luplow hitting a Grand Slam again. I had the World Series video like being edited in my head and I was like, we've got our first two highlights, and I'll tell you what, two highlights. That's the video packages. And one ball off the wall in Fenway Park. Yeah, I mean, they were they were highlights, though, at least the ball off the wall in Fenway doesn't get to be anyone else's highlight. That's something I guess, right? I strongly regret bringing that play up in the first place. I was not very happy about it in the environment. Well, Jeff, I am mindful of the time and that you have to go back to doing baseball stuff even if we won't see the effects of that baseball stuff for a couple of months. But I would say what do you have to plug but you have the rays to plug as like a franchise to root for. So instead, I will ask, is there any pop culture that you have engaged with recently that you've really liked that our listeners should consider as the off season approaches here? We just watched it follows the other day, which has been Afro like 7 years, so I'm probably not the right person to ask. Okay. Yeah, I'm like woefully behind on TV. I make time for bake off because it makes me feel happy when I have to work late. Wait, why are you so sleepy today when there was no World Series yesterday? I know there's like a full editing schedule, but I hope that you caught up on a little bit of sleep. I did. I got like I went to bed at like 9 30 last place. I would have been at 9, beat you. Yeah, I went to bed at like 9 30 last night and then woke up at like 7 15 to run the site. So I did get a full night's sleep last night, which was great and sorely needed, but it's like, you know, it's like the cumulative effect of the month, I think, is really what wears on you. And to be clear, my job, it's not like I'm not plowing a field or mining coal or anything. But I have worked probably 35 days in a row. I mean, this I'm sure is people can understand if they give it a moment's thought. Like when the cubs won the World Series and 7 games are like when the Astros beat the Dodgers and that crazy World Series 7 games, like I remember, you know, of course being in a position not unlike yours and seeing that stuff happen. And the more historic it gets, I remember just thinking like yeah. Oh, I have to work so much harder on this. Yeah. Given it's due, but just as a fan, as you're watching this stuff, take place. Just understand the media that's covering it. They're all very tired. Yeah, they're all right. It's a long month. Yeah, it's a great job and even great jobs make you tired, so, you know, we fully admit to the first thing while also acknowledging the second. And yeah, I don't know, like we'll just we'll just rest eventually, probably. We'll sleep when we're dead. I don't know. We're all trying to sleep more, but we fail pretty often. Okay, so I guess as a plug, I don't know when this is gonna go up. It's maybe before game 6 of the World Series. Those of you listening, if you could just write your local congressperson and get them to maybe submit that the rays should still be in the World Series, we could. I mean, we haven't had meetings about this, but I think it would be super. Yeah. Those of you who are feeling a little sympathetic to the cause, maybe pitch in a little bit. And together we can do this. Yeah, you want some legislative intervention. That makes sense, you'd need a couple days pause to get everyone back together because I imagine that players have gone home to their off season homes, but it seems it.

"It to break. When we come back, we can talk about the cardinal shape. Everything up. We, I mean, I'm not going to speak for you. I don't think Aaron Boone is going to get a managerial job next year. If he is not the New York Yankee manager, but the San Diego Padres, they're open to bed open for a while at the high profile that's almost exactly like the Yankees of the West Coast. In terms of disappointing us all, and on the central, we've got the Saint Louis Cardinals wide open. I'm less interested in doing taking that job than I am about Mike Shelton what it means what the philosophical differences could have been in. Could he be in the Yankees vlogger? So stick around, you'll be right back. Welcome back to the inks goyard podcast. So, yeah, Saint Louis Cardinals manager Mike schilt is now gone every answer that was given about schilt from the front office was strange. They made it very clear that there was a philosophical difference between whatever shilt was asked to execute in whatever he wanted to do. He is sort of from a distance. I'm not in St. Louis. I don't read the post dispatch every day. I don't go to bob Briggs home and ask him to break it down for me. But it sort of seemed like shill was a perfect blend of old school and new school. He had the, I mean, you watch him in the video that Randy or rosarina posted in the locker room after they won the 2019 NLD S and destroyed the braves. Schultz basically giving the motivational speech of a lifetime. We're not fucking losing, dropping ass bombs and F bombs everywhere and ultimately rosarina may be got treated for leaking that. So that's embarrassing. But with the doors closed, supposedly, it's sort of your classic old school baseball man. But by all accounts, he was a rising star in the system, he was able to run whatever the cardinals wanted to execute. The cardinal's always performed in the same level. Year in year out, they made the playoffs after having almost no chance of doing so this year took a 17 game winning streak and he had that team vibing, made the playoffs in 2020, made the NLCS in 2019 with a weird veteran laden but rookie inclusive group Tommy Edmund becomes a star in 2019. They're welcoming new players into the fold and saying goodbye to others, you know Matt Carpenter basically doesn't even play this year. Because he can't hit because his career is over and they find a way to deal with that. They've got underperformers like you, like Matt Carpenter legs, DJ Lemay who look like Juan Soto this year. And they found a way to de emphasize them and figure out how to build from within, suddenly they have a different shortstop entirely. And again, they're winning 17 games. So from the outside looking in, I feel like shelter is perfect, but knowing what I know about the Yankees front office. And the fact that they're clearly clashing with Aaron Boone philosophically because he's not lined up with whatever they want to implement, I don't think that shield is the kind of guy who's gonna look at the open Yankees job and the Yankees aren't gonna look at him. Neither party is gonna be like this guy just left St. Louis because he wouldn't implement what the front office wanted him to. Let's bring him to New York where the front office clearly wants full control over what the managers are going to do. So I think it's perfect. I think it's like I think it's what people think a buck showalter hire.

"So I share the frustration. I do hope though that we can at least say, this is a really good ball club. Yes, and they were a legitimate 100 win team legitimately the best team in the American League, legitimately. I think there are moments you can point to in that series where the ownership and transigen towards spending money. I think especially in game four where you have Shane mcclanahan on three days rest. As a rookie at the end of the longest season of his life, being asked to get out in a believe at the time a scoreless game against the most difficult part of this Red Sox order on the road. That's definitely a scenario where you feel like maybe if you had an extra starter if you had just paid for one extra starter if you kept Charlie Morton if you hadn't traded rich hill if you've just gone out and gotten like a pick pick a starter from last off season who would have been available on a cheap one to two year contract and would have been at least league average. I can't think of anyone to top my head. But that was probably a moment where you're like, okay, this is where this team's cheapness really comes back to bite them. But otherwise like all the stuff that happened in this series that kind of didn't go the rays way was just very in stuff. It was that fluke play. It was Manny Margo being called out on that stolen base because he came off the bag by an inch. It was, you know, it was a thousand other things you can point to that that made the difference in this series that had nothing to do with the quality of the race because they're a super, super good team. They're terrifying to face. They're exhausting. It felt like wonder Franklin Randy rosarina wrote about every inning and they weren't, but there are players in that lineup where nearly dam is good anyway. Right. And so that's like, yes, legitimate, 5 game series teaches you nothing about the actual goodness of that team. But it does really feel like one of those things where if you want to make sure that those variant moments hurt you less, it probably helps have a roster built up around you that can weather those moments a little better because you have guys I mean, this is the thing with last year. Like you just said, basically the 2020 World Series was the rays against the rays, but with superstars. Great. So I feel a lot for the raise. And I especially feel for them now too, because it's very clear this franchise is actually going to pursue this idiotic Montreal plan. And I don't know. What do you do when your team's eliminated and the first thing you hear about franchise wise? Well, sorry guys. It was a really fun season. Tune in next year when we're going to try to spend half our time when we're going to spend all our time trying to convince you that actually, Canada is where we want to be playing, not this dump of a stadium next to a highway. Yeah, it's a rough way to wake up the day after you've done a limited for sure. And so my condolences to Tampa, there are very good, very fun team. I make jokes about them online all the time because it's very easy and because I can never resist easy shots. But they are so much fun to watch when they got especially when they're just clicking. When you just see all the pieces fall into place and you're like, oh, this is basically a perfectly built baseball team from top to bottom. That's terrifying to think about. Yeah. Well, we leave that series behind right now as we record. We are in the bottom of the first of Houston, White Sox, Carlos rodon, through 99 in the prior running. So, you know, that is at least a good sign for his early going here. So we will wait the conclusion of that series to find out who the Red Sox are playing. So we'll wait to preview it until we know what their opponent looks like. But let's briefly touch on the NL here, the brewers, stand on the brink of elimination, as do the Dodgers, which is surprising, perhaps. And I guess, I will ask which of those two outcomes is the most surprising to you, John? Probably Dodgers and not so much because I expect. I mean, I picked them to win that series. No, I'm sorry. I picked the Giants when that series. So I don't know, I guess I don't really be surprised. But I think it's less about the surprise that the Dodgers are losing and more about the brewers being down to one and having scored a grand total of two runs in three games. Yeah, that scans. Yeah. That everything that's happened with the brewers so far has played exactly out as you would expect it to. They've gotten two really good pitching performance at three really, the Freddie Peralta was Freddie Peralta was shorter obviously than Corbin burns and Brandon woodruffs, but they've got an excellent pitching and no offense to speak of, which was pretty much the case all year. I mean, pulling from Kevin Goldstein's game three recap a team that finished, I believe, top 5 in the NL and runs between the bottom in both OPS and WRC plus. So yeah. Peripherally not a good team. And as KG mentioned, it took a Willy Adams hot streak the likes of which he had never experienced. Plus, guys like Luis Arias and rowdy television kind of catching fire for a bit for them to get even that far. Yeah. And that's something you look at that lineup going into that series, and you ask yourself, who exactly here is the guy you can rely on to do damage. Like where is the chunk of the lineup that a pitcher is scared to face? I know that's like this sounds like an extremely sports talk radio way of referencing it. But it really is just an average offense at best that doesn't really have consistent power threats. A lot of these guys are more contact oriented hitters like Colton Wong or Louis Zürich or Adam ezer and especially with Christian Yelich continuing to have disappeared sometime around the end of 2019 and never having come back. Yeah, the fact that the brewers are where they are against a team in Atlanta that doesn't pitch as well as they do, but still pitches pretty well and has a much better offense to boot. Yeah, that doesn't surprise me that they are where they are and that they are in this position because it really I think it really was going to take either burns Woodruff and Peralta are all Madison Bumgarner together, 2014 Madison Bumgarner, or they need one to three of those guys in that lineup to go just wild over the course of 5 games. They need a Kiki Hernandez type performance, because that lineup just is not consistent enough to put together offensive rallies on the regular. They're way too many dead spots in that lineup. There are way too many guys who are not capable of doing really anything other than ripping a single between first and second, which, hey, you're on base, but you know, and I think we've seen this, it's really hard to build rallies in the postseason. Yeah. Unless you are a hyper either you're unless you're the Astros and you just have a lineup that goes 7 deep somehow, or you're a hyper contact oriented team that's really good at executing fundamental and fundamentals and small ball, which the brewers are, but that I think obviously works better against bad teams, certainly than it does against a braves team that is genuinely legitimately good. And I think the other surprise if there is a surprise to me is that Atlanta is as good as it is, despite the fact that the braves lost Ronald Acuna and their outfield was a mess and they don't have Mike sirocco and their goal pen is a mess..

"You know, you know, you know, he can say who he wants to say. I had never even, you know, you know, I heard his name before. Jess, what do you think? I hate it. I mean, honestly, like, if you don't want to give a team anymore, bullets and board, like we're gonna come out and just absolutely crush you. I mean, if the Astros who have had a chip on their shoulder, you've seen it all season long, not showing up to the All-Star Game, just that defiance. I feel like last year was it got the best of them this year. It's absolutely fueled them. I don't think anything could have just put if you want to spark up a team who's already been hot, offensively, but to show, okay, you want to see us hit in Chicago 'cause you're saying something's going on in minivan. And I get it. This is a team that cheated. It was proven. But now, this is a team that is absolutely talented. And I don't think you need to fuel any fire. It's one thing to talk about amongst yourselves to say it publicly is only in my opinion going to get this Houston asking even more lit and absolutely happen on offensively now going forward. Yeah, Jess, I feel like if anybody was going to say it, it has to be Tim Anderson. On that team, it can't be a reliever. It just can't be, and I don't think Tim Anderson would say that. Speaking of him, I wanted to run this past year. You're a perfect person to answer this question. We got this bleacher tweet. The question is you've been tapped to direct a movie, the intangibles you never see them coming at blockbuster holiday superhero film. What players skippers and teams do you cast from the 2021 season? So I'm going to give you my team and you can add any player you want. I got Alex gore as the manager. Tim Anderson is on the team. Jose Abreu was on the team wander Franco's on the team Juan sodas on the team, Alex Bregman is on the team. Catchers, Sally Perez, yadi Molina, first base, Freddie green. I'll be at second. I got Bogart's playing shortstop Bryce or maybe Tim Anderson's my third baseman in that situation. My absolutely got Bryce Harper, judge and Castellanos, pitchers, I got Scherzer, Bueller, Wainwright, Charlie Morton. My closers, Liam Hendricks. This is the all intangible team. What do you think? I think it's a stupid ridiculous scene. Oh my gosh. How much fun? This is what I get excited. You make me think about the Olympics or you know, if you could put together like the real Dream Team, right? I mean, that's what you just did. I mean, it's just crazy. Maybe if I'm going all postseason, though, like, throw in a Randy or rosarina. And Raphael dippers, 'cause I think that'd be it. There's the intangibles, but then there's like the all postseason current like who just steps up and you got Kiki Hernandez. I mean, there's just players right now that we see. I mean, rosarina, his numbers mean at three 54 batting average, 11 home runs, I think I saw somewhere. He has more home runs in the postseason than like all of the Seattle Mariners. Insane. So yeah, I like your team. I'd like to then move it forward and let's come up with a bunch of different teams, especially in all posts and team. That's a great idea. By the way, how much fun would it be to have Tim Anderson and Ozzy albies playing beside each other? Oh my gosh. Just the fun. I would love to just hang out with those two. Those two, people that don't know them enough that we're best friends with them, but being around Tim Anderson, first of all, just his understanding of just the bigger picture of life is absolutely amazing..

"Let's start things off with Sean mcadam down in lovely saint Pete, covering the Red Sox and the rays, and Sean, we have another game tonight, so there's really not too much time to dwell on game one. But nothing really went right for the Red Sox here. It was almost a total flipped script from the wild card game where they got out early, got the jump, did everything, you know, did everything right. That's what the rays did to the Red Sox last night. And it was 5 nothing, but they looked so overmatched by the raise. And I know it's just one baseball game, but you can't feel great about what you saw in the Red Sox last night. Yeah, I think there is a danger John to overreacting to watching 9 innings. It's what it was just one game. But when you see the rays versatility, their athleticism, their aggressiveness, you realize that there's a significant gap between these teams. And whether that is in relation to game one Thursday night at the trop, this American League division series or zooming out in the big picture, how much ground the Red Sox have to make up or how big a gap they need to close to really contend with the rays we saw the Tampa Bay dominated the regular season series. They were the strong favorites to win this series and nothing we saw on Thursday changes our view, but it did sort of zoom in, if you will on the differences between the teams and how much ground the socks have to make up. The rays did everything better and you're right that 5 nothing might as well have been 12 nothing. Yeah, it just didn't feel like a game the Red Sox could win at any point in time. And as you said, the raise, the rays look like who the Red Sox want to be when they grow up, you know? It's amazing with a fraction of the payroll. What a complete team that is. And a team that has really nowhere to go but up given how many young players they've got rolling out there. It's incredible. Look last night, the three principals Shane mcclanahan, Randy a rosarina and wander Franco, all rookies. One guy gets you 5 shutout innings, a rosarina hits the home run, steals home, walks twice Franco is the most talented player on the field arguably. And they all status. Yeah. It's unbelievable. How much talent they have, both on the field and still in the pipeline..

"Nothing two batters into the game. Runner scores from first on a hustle double in the gap. That's insane. The Yankees can't physically do that. Randy rosarina scores from first on a line drive single that got bobbled for like one and a half seconds by Kiki Hernandez. Nelson Cruz homers off the roof, Randy rosarina swings and misses at pitch one. Swings and foul tips pitched to and swings and jacks pitch three, 450 feet out to left field. Same pitch three times. Any time's it up with tip bomb. Joey Gallo, how many times does he get the same fastball down the middle three times? And never adjusts and never figures out how to re time it. You just watch that that raise Red Sox game. It felt like the rays were operating on a different speed than the Red Sox who were operating on a different speed than the Yankees. And the Yankees are just such a clear fourth place team in the raised Red Sox Jays yanks dichotomy right now. The run it back stuff. I mean, I don't know if I don't know if Aaron Boone stays or goes, I'm pretty confident Brian cashman stays, but I will say that the New York media is currently rambling overtime to get you used to the idea of if Boone's not coming back, he's being replaced by an Aaron Boone. So even if you have like dreams of this entire thing being uprooted, the media, the Michael K show, Michael K said it, Joel Sherman said it in his column. If Boone stays or goes, let's say he goes, cashman's picking up a boon. Cashman's not picking up a buck showalter. Cashman is not hiring Bruce bochy. Cashman is not hiring Mike sosha. These are the examples that K used. You're not going to watch a veteran manager sliding or some sort. I mean, look, I don't want a I don't necessarily want a 70 year old man piling in the New York Yankees next year. I just want somebody who does what Aaron Boone does, but has a bit more independence and a bit more wherewithal. And it just feels like Boone's learned nearly nothing in his four years of doing this. His win percentage was immaculate in 2018, but that was a team that a sock puppet could have 100 games with 2019 he had a great did a great job managing. And filled the gaps in motivated his team and did it all with the bullpen warts. It didn't really matter. That was a great team. Last two years, something's gone stale. I don't know what it is. I don't know whether it's Aaron Boone or not, but he might not be the figurehead. Some genuine change needs to be made. Either Boone leaves or his coaching staff is gutted, but I will say that.

"Ends October 10th back with Alex barth of 98 5 the sports hub and you can follow them on Twitter at real Alex barth, apparently doesn't know how to center himself on his camera as we're doing. Podcast. Are you with us? Yeah. Okay. You could move over to your right just to see, I get because there's this. I don't have like a perfect way to balance everything here. Way to prep for this podcast, I appreciate it, Alex. You come through for us all the time, you're awesome. All right, let's spend some time as we wrap it up on the Tampa Bay Rays and the things that the Red Sox is going to have to do. First of all, they're starting pitching is going to have to control the top 5 batters in their order which figure to be. Randy, rosarina, playing left field, wander Franco, the super sensation rookie that was brought up in mid season and he hasn't disappointed. He's their shortstop. DH Nelson Cruz, who has experience up the wazoo. This will not be in a bigger than life situation for him batting third. Batting fourth cleanup is third baseman yandy Diaz and batting 5th, second baseman likely to be batting 5th Brandon Lau with a lot of pop. He had three homers in a game I believe recently against the New York Yankees a blowout win as the Tampa Bay Rays clinched a hundred win season in the best record in the American League. That's one thing. And the other thing is their rotation. The Red Sox are going to face Shane mcclanahan in game number one. And he it seems like we say this every year, Alex barth, about Tampa Bay pictures. He had a breakout year as a young picture in the ray's rotation. He's a left hander he had a ten and 6 record this past year, 3.43 ERA. He starts game one a little more than a year after he became the first picture in MLB history to debut. Make his debut in the postseason. He posted a 3.01 ERA with 99 strikeouts over the last three months of the season. And, you know, he is a guy that is really, I think in a try and give Tampa Bay a boost right out of the gate. Yeah, I mean, I think they've got a bank on him because without glass now. And we talked about this a while ago, like, I thought Tampa was out of it without glass now, because I wasn't a huge fan of their pitching rotation now. Mcclanahan's come on and sometimes it's hard to project with rookies right and he's obviously been that guy. So he checks a box, but Ryan Yarborough struggled Michael walker's struggle. So if you can, if you're the Red Sox, and this is obviously easier said than done. If you can take a game started by mcclanahan, you really put the raisin corner. It's not impossible for the Red Sox to win it if they lose game one. But it kind of becomes tough for the race to win it, right? If they lose it because then they're pitching potentially against totally blown up. So mcclanahan is a pivotal player in this series. I don't have a splits in front of the Red Sox when it pulls up right now because I'm actually curious, but I think this first game is going to tell us a lot..

"A third and it was like premeditated pullout, great and wandy comes in and has absolutely nothing. He's walking people. I mean, he gives up this ridiculous lefty lefty dink to Austin Meadows. And this series turned almost twice on just stupid bloops. I mean, the winning run in Friday's game was Kevin to cure my are just putting bad on a ball in the other batter's box looping it over G, or shallow at shortstop. Who didn't seem to track it right and isn't a shortstop and didn't really know where the pop up was. And then obviously, Jonathan, why is that guy who finally back from injury didn't unable to pitch with no restrictions, clearly their monitoring him, et cetera, just don't want him to go back to back. He comes in and, you know, there's a runner a third thanks to a dribbler down the left field line that Gary can't pick up. A stolen base where Gary has the runner beaten and throws high to second. Advances on a deep fly out to Joey Gallo, who's off his he's on his incorrect feat throwing the third it's already rosarina is at third with one out suddenly in the 8th. After doing basically nothing to earn a base at all. Like proving how crazy it was at the Yankees didn't have base runners on as well because you know Randy and Austin Meadows and somebody else Brandon Lau. Oh God. I think it was Brandon Lau who just popped one into left field too earlier in the game. And it was like, well, there's nobody there. Great, cool, wonderful. They had three of the easiest dinky CH you'll ever see in that game. But Nelson Cruz up with Randy on third one ounce squirrels game in the Liza got him on a tailing fastball like 97 off inside off the plate. And then obviously Gio rachelle heroic beyond heroic with that diving catch. I'm not sure I would start him at shortstop. I'm gonna use that as a jumping off point for the Fenway game just because I don't know if I would start him at shortstop in the wildcard game with that limited range of motion. It felt like they were getting they got off really lucky in the 6th, 7th and 8th. Keeping Jewish Ella on the field because when he grounded out later in his one at bat, he barely walked first. He was sort of hobbling and you know, somehow no grounders were hitting the shortstop hole in the 7th or 8th. And if they had been, we probably would have noticed that, oh, this guy has no lateral quickness whatsoever. I was sort of stunned they left him in. Obviously, he's been hot with the bat lately in a way that maybe fans haven't noticed because it came during such a junk Carlos Stanton dominated streak, Aaron judge dominated street or shell has been hot for probably like three weeks now. Which is, again, kind of not sort of under the radar, but you know, they kept him in and he wanted to stay in, and you're not going to go against your player's wishes, but I'm not sure I would start him at Fenway Park in another do or die and endure die postseason game. I certainly wouldn't start him at short, I don't think I would go, you know, they don't have DJ Lemay here..

"He ran from center field to left field on a fly ball that was hanging in the air for quite a while right in front literally stepped in front of Randy or rosarina who was standing under the ball for probably 5 or 6 seconds, takes the ball from him and then throws it home to try to get the tag and runner. It's an awful throw. It's not in time. And then in the postgame, he went on a 12 minute diatribe about his talents and his abilities and how he's so great and how his defensive his defensive abilities out there are unmatched. And so when he thinks he can make a play, sorry to my teammates who are standing under the ball for 6 seconds waiting for it to make a play. I'm going to have to come in and cut you off and then try to make the play at home. And it's not going to be good because I just ran 45 yards to catch that fly ball and I'm off balance. So Kevin kiermaier never really liked the dude. He's kind of a Yankee killer in my opinion, too. He hits like 9 home runs a year and three of them always come against the Yankees. So it doesn't surprise me that the rays are doing something a little bit potentially unsavory. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more there. But what are you going to do? We're going to invest investigate every team for potentially maybe cheating or having unfair practices. No, I mean, what Kevin kiermaier did was shitty, very stupid to do being that you know the cameras are on you at all times, especially in a world dominated by social media. So I don't really care about it. But the Jays once again, Jay-Z are a bunch of crybabies too. I'm sick of everyone just crying. Just who cares when the game dude?.

Jonathan scope Domingo, Santana, Jesus Aguilar Mauricio. Dubon Trent Grisham. Yasmani. Grandal from a pitching standpoint Jeremy Jeffress song Smith like Parker Tyler Webb Wade, Miley Drew smyly again and Zach Davies now the Reds and Pirates are interesting case study dog. Because they have both made big trades and they have made trades to potentially kick-start a rebuild, but then they have gone on the other side of those trades and acquired players that you wouldn't necessarily think you would acquire if you were in the midst of rebuild. So here's the Reds list position players Todd Frazier Jay Bruce Walker Adam Duvall Jeter Downs. shed long Taylor Trammell on Scott Moss a pitching list Aroldis Chapman Tanner Rainey Josiah gray and Kevin gausman for the Pirates guys that they have moved out position players Andrew McCutchen Austin Meadows Jordan luplow Corey Dickerson and Starling Marte, so that would seem to be a team that's in the midst of a rebuilt. Right? It seems it's trying to send guys out the pitching. Gerrit Cole Charlie, Morton Francisco, Liriano again, Tyler Webb Tony Watson Daniel Hudson, Tyler glasnow Jordan Lyles So like the Pirates were at the intersection of potentially wanting to rebuild and trading Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros trading Andrew McCutchen away. But then also sending Austin Meadows and All-Star last year and Tyler glasnow started two games in the world series for the Rays to Tampa for Chris Archer. So they've been kind of caught at that intersection of Are We rebuilding or are we trying to acquire players to win now? The Reds the same way, I mean, they traded Jeter downs and wage. I agree shed long and Taylor Trammell last year in the deal to you know, pick up the guys from the Dodgers and also Trevor Bauer so I'm in now and they got the playoffs this year with Trevor Bauer, but they also traded away some of the best prospects including Taylor Trammell and baseball. So, what's the line? And I completely understand the just Spotlight that is on Randy arozarena and how that really magnifies maybe some of the deals with Cardinals have made over the last few years. Rosarina. I think was the piece that the raise wanted in that deal to get Matthew Liberatore and my stance has always been that way. It's the other deals the Luke Voit to New York the Matt Adams some of some of the trades with guys under control when your rationale for the moves has been that we need. Give opportunity to other guys. Well, you can still keep players on your roster that are under control guys that around the 40-man guys that Still have option years you can still keep them on the roster. rather than just moving them for the sake of moving them but Again, something that I think every Club deals with and as we read the names and and go through the list, I mean even the Brewers list. Go through the list of guys that each team that there's all stars on. All of those lists get each team in the division has parted ways with whether it be via trade or free agency get each team has moved on from the Cardinal certainly aren't alone. In that respect but they have moved down from some guys who you would think at least with what they're doing with their current teams could immediately and drastically impact them most significant area of weakness. We'll talk a little Mizu later this week, but just some thoughts on the win and on the way they were able to win first of all the unpredictability of the schedule and I think that it's been talked about and stated before and we've talked about how football coaches are perhaps the most regimented and scheduled people on the planet and so much thought to the point that they'll sleep in their offices and really not lead healthy lives because of the way that they go about trying to structure and and trying to plan and trying to execution on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis. So with the unpredictability of the schedule and some of the positive tests we've seen that have come out and have come out in the SEC Mizzou has been thrown into a situation where you don't know what the schedule to bring. You don't know what the next round of testing will bring right. So missoula's had to be kind of fluid in in their preparation and getting ready for just about anyone. So yeah the nice win over LSU you do it in one style. You throw throw throw counter based like was fantastic and then you prepare for a Kentucky team after you don't play Vanderbilt and a much different style of Kentucky team Kentucky team that you haven't beaten and took some time and you do it in a different way. You hold onto the ball you limit Kentucky's possessions. You don't turn the ball over you run run run. Larry Roundtree was unbelievable. Connor beige black plays an entire different style of football game and you win in a much different way a much more methodical way. This was in this is the thing that maybe drives me the most crazy and football whether it's the NFL or college is that you know, think about a couple of years ago the Barry Odom team that had Georgia on the ropes that should have beaten, Georgia at home, but you did not adapt..
