"Next week's episode is on ghosting. Get it, Halloween, and we want to hear from you. If you have a story of a time that you were ghosted, record a 32nd voice memo on your phone and email us at hysteria at crooked dot com. And then tune in next week because you might hear your story on the show. Okay, house has been kept. Let's talk about what we're feeling petty about this week. I'm going to go first because I feel like this is maybe a little overdue. I was feeling petty about this last week, and then I just didn't bring it up because I forgot because my brain's broken. But we can have a go, pictures of Timothée Chalamet started circulating and young Timothy is dressed as looks like a sexual ebenezer Scrooge. That's a great way to put it. Sort of, and he is supposed to be playing a young Willy Wonka because apparently Hollywood is not out of ideas, but afraid of any idea that hasn't already existed. So they're doing a prequel of Willy Wonka and in the pre quill, Chalamet will be playing Willy Wonka. Here's what I feel petty about this week. Absolutely not. I think that he is a fabulous. He's a fabulous actor and everything I've seen him and he's been great in. And I'm sure that he will do well with this role, but he is not right for the role. Like ever since I read Willy Wonka, when I was a kid, what the vibe is in the book is Willy Wonka is sort of like a stunted weird childlike vaguely menacing character. Everything you said is Timothy Chalamet. He is not menacing. Those cheekbones that he went to Laguardia. There is nothing menacing. There's nothing menacing about his cheekbones. His cheekbones should be in a museum. He's got, though, Willy Wonka is a little bit scary in gene wild, they're almost got it right, but Gene Wilder is too much of a man to play Willy Wonka. And Johnny Depp went too creepy with Willy Wonka. I think the ideal Willy Wonka would be somebody like comedian patty Harrison, who is the perfect combination of fun, but are you dangerous? Is something like are you going to hurt me? Are you going to throw something? There's something that is unhinged about her style of comedy that I think would lend itself really well to being like an on screen Willy Wonka. I want somebody who feels like they're not quite all there. And Charlotte is.

Because of cost concerns and conservatives have criticized the democrats plan to push many of their big changes through the budget reconciliation process without any republican support. I don't think it's appealing in the context of throwing it in a reconciliation package. That's completely partisan says. Rachel wrestler a research fellow at the conservative heritage foundation. Lawmakers might be able to come up with a bipartisan agreement to reform. Ssi she says but not just something. That's going to provide a blanket increase in the level of benefits grislier and the heritage foundation argue. There would be less need for. Ssi if social security retirement benefits were privatized and focused more on. Lower income earners still support for increasing monthly. Ssi benefits is growing. The proposed changes are enormously popular with the general public even among republicans just as the stimulus checks and the child tax credit are powerful outside. Groups have backed the idea including afl cio. The united auto workers u. a. w. aarp and the consortium for citizens with disabilities and senate finance committee. Chair ron wyden. A democrat from oregon is on board with brown's plan in addition to senate budget committee chair bernie sanders of vermont. Brown says he has been talking to senate majority leader chuck schumer and other negotiators about ways to make the ssi changes work and says he is optimistic. That at least some can be included in the reconciliation bill. His optimism comes from experience. He worked on the expanded child tax credit for years with representative rosa delauro before the idea became a reality this year with the child tax credit i. I moved on this in two thousand thirteen when only rosa delauro and i were pushing for it and then we got former president barack obama on board. "Cannot stop salivating salivating over the possibility for partisan gain progressive say it may be partisan but they believe the public is with them Rosa DeLauro Democrat from Connecticut says until the corona virus hit Republicans generally didn't support any expansion of domestic spending intended to help people in a crisis now there is a crisis and Democrats want to use this moment to reform the system these folks have never wanted to go down this road and protect what what is social safety net that we've had in the past and a new social safety net for people in today's world take unemployment insurance Ron Wyden the top Democrat on the Senate finance committee wants to tie the expanded benefits that passed in the cares act to the unemployment rate when unemployment goes up so do the benefits so people can stay on their feet he says the existing system hasn't worked for a long time and this is a chance to fix it going forward the unemployment system which was invented in the nineteen thirties is still in kind of a timely work nobody ever heard of a gig worker back in the nineteen thirties Democrats say it makes sense to advocate for temporary policy changes now with the understanding that Democrats do want these programs to be made permanent some of these benefits like extra unemployment already got big bipartisan support and will be harder to take way later not all Democrats necessarily agree Stephanie Murphy who is one of the leaders of a group of fiscally conservative Democrats says the coronavirus is creating unprecedented need but she says any policies need to be re evaluated over time and she says pushing for partisan policies in a divided Congress with a Republican president isn't the best path to making those ideas a reality the only things that become law can actually help the people that we're trying to R. and just so she says Democrats should look at their list of ideas and find places where they might get some buy in from Republicans like her proposal to extend and expand a tax credit for businesses that keep employees on the payroll during the crisis but Democrats are hoping to take control of the Senate and the White House in November which would make it easier to remake the system Kelsey Snell NPR news Washington to New Orleans now where Kelly fields owns the award winning bakery and restaurant Willa Jean when I spoke with her in early April she had furloughed all one hundred thirteen of her employees well fast forward a month and this Wednesday will gene is officially re opening its doors to diners Kelly fields joins us now to talk about it Hey there welcome back Hey there thanks for having me again so talk me through your plan what is eating up religion gonna look like starting this week well it's going to change a little bit we're going to do all counter service so my actual service staff isn't quite comfortable yet so we're gonna do counter service where customers will place your order at the counter and will bring their food to them and eliminate the risk of person to person contact that would normally happen yup and you've got limited capacity is that right you can't allow and the same number of diners you did before the mandate in New Orleans is twenty five percent capacity which puts us at about twenty eight seats you said of some of those people were are feeling a little wary not entirely comfortable yet what does that conversation been like with your staff I mean obviously I'm in support of them coming back on their own time when they feel comfortable but I also know my responsibility as a business owner and the challenge for this is going to do it's going to be doing my part to ensure that we're practicing as safe as we are as as were able providing protective gear for my team holding the customers accountable to our wear masks when they're out and about the restaurant and just that everybody smart and responsible and respectful in this process yeah I was looking at your website and that you've got a long long list on there if everything you're doing to make everything safe for your staff and for diners it sounds like that's gonna be a big part of the challenge is convincing your customers it's okay it's safe come back yeah I think that's gonna be the biggest the biggest challenge for all of us as business owners is is just restoring faith in the public to feel comfortable to be out yeah without level of capacity years I I can't imagine or anticipate making anything like the revenue you would have made a few months ago how does that work out I'm curious I know myself we're really lucky the we've got a really strong community like Norrland supports restaurants like no other city are now so our delivery and takeout business has been really strong and we open the the bakery counter this weekend and and people really showed up and supported supported what we're doing which feels really good but we're going to take the the bigger picture one day at a time and figure it out now I have to ask is there a particular item on the menu that you were excited to serve on a plate to obtain a customer you can see and watch him do again yeah while I'm there for yeah the R. barbecue shrimp toast the I didn't realize how much I missed it in the first one came in the window and I smelled it and it just it felt like a normalcy that I didn't know I needed I I know the last time I talked I mentioned I was eyeing the biscuit with grandma's sausage gravy and did not survive the pandemic clashing with that yes yes I hope you hold on for me for next time I am in New Orleans and we will be thinking of you and wishing best of luck stay safe stay well and thanks for talking with us thank you so much you too that is Kelly fields James beard award winner and McDaniel she she came out and she said like this is this is ridiculous human blows your acting like political hacks we should all be on the same page with this thing this of course is true they're trying to Stoke fear and the American people this is a time when Americans usually come together and they put aside their political differences and they say how can I help this president how can I make sure we calm the fears of the American people and that's it the precisely the opposite of what Democrats are doing they're politicizing that's we're preparing we're putting protocols in place and we're going to be ready and Democrats should be joining him and say guess what we're gonna work together across party lines to make sure our country safe and politicizing it which they've done with every single issue when it comes to this president and that is why they're just so shameful and they haven't helped solve many many problems of the American people are facing she's saying she speaks truth she speaks truth okay that is a hundred percent true I mean you can see in the Washington post Washington post as another piece today about how trump is mean to bureaucrats it's obvious his threatens the country because trump is right down the deep state throughout his more than three years as president of the Washington post trump is obsessed at times conspiratorial way over what it calls the deep state the thousands of career government specialists in national security intelligence science in other areas whose expertise he shuns in part because he suspects they're disloyal saboteurs and so the first case of coronavirus not tied to foreign travel being announced in California on Wednesday trump finds himself grappling with a crisis for which his record suggests he's particularly ill suited to respond so because trump is ripping as Intel people because they were in fact leaking a bunch of crap about him for years on end this means he's ill equipped to respond I leading health officers do their job I mean come on come on come on this is exactly what Democrats are looking for it's it this doesn't mean that trump can't handle this better I said it I said right from beginning president trump should be quite no weapons handle this thing not a word about it that's what he should do and should let his people handle it but to proclaim that we are in the midst of a of a public relations in from clause crisis is just missing the fact that the rest of the world is the source of corona virus is the source of the global economic risk the United States is actually the only solid island in a sea of chaos coming up brand new polls from South Carolina as we approach the South Carolina primary tomorrow Joe Biden's last gasp board.

"Lots of outreach to educate operators. But if that's the case, then why are there so many workers still waiting for their back wages? The house will be in order. I know what democratic congresswoman Rosa delauro of Connecticut, she's the new chair of the house subcommittee that oversees Labor's budget. She's a passionate speaker and in a sea of blue and gray suits. She stands out, she's wearing colors like the plumage of a tropical bird, bright, orange, scarf lime green shirt, and purple hair. So we have this vulnerable population DOL has stepped back and allowed this to happen. So then who's going to protect these vulnerable people. It falls to the congress since there's been abdication at the agency level that the congress takes us on. The Laura says she's been trying in twenty seventeen. She sponsored a Bill to fight wage theft. It died in committee, the day, I met her. She had just introduced a new budget provisions that would let DO L higher five hundred additional inspire. California is one of a few states, where prosecutors are filing criminal charges against care homeowners. And that brings us back to romell Publico. About a year after the rate is care home, Sonia. Still working there. She starts noticing that something's off Ramal and his wife, they're showing up every day. She's painting SIS fixing all the things I wanted to fix the get home when Sonya asks what's going on? They just shrug her off. They admit the patient. I said, oh, really? And then one day another man shows up at the door. Oh, they do that,.

"The border another two caravans now pouring up Mexico could stop them so easy. And you know, what if they don't it's going to cost them a hell of a lot of buddy. Honestly because they could do. And I'm telling you right now, we will close the damn border. Five one two eight three six zero five nine eight six. Oh, nine time. For the rush update, democrat congresswoman, Rosa delauro of Connecticut, and Barbara California are proposing a crampy new entitlements. Call the end diaper need act. The co-sponsors are Alexander, the SEO Cortez in Ilhan, Omar, and they're gonna help push it through blogs. Now, how exactly these democrat women propose to end diaper need cheesy. Same way the propose to solve everything else. What somebody else's money, namely yours? Now. According to a Representative Barbara Lee, childcare centers will not take new kids without an adequate supply of diapers. That means low income mothers cannot return to work supposedly because they can't afford to pay for the diapers. It's a real struggle says Representative Rosa delauro diapers are basic hygiene items, and they're really expensive like light condoms. She says. No family should be forced to choose between diapers and groceries or condoms. So Democrats want to start a demonstration program, they want you the taxpayer to come up with a hundred million dollars. So they can pass it to their blue city Powell's for diapers. Leftover money for condoms one hundred million dollars to deal with a massive load of baby poop, which pretty well sums up the democrat party agenda and logo..

"You know, so you you have this sort of these other plans like I think like probably the best version of it isn't Medicare for America act, which is a Jan Schakowsky and Rosa delauro in the house, and is sort of written in large part by Jacob hacker who's very thoughtful health policy wonk at Yale. And that would you know, it builds out this Medicare plan uses Medicare pricing puts ObamaCare people on Medicaid people on it the uninsured on it. And let's individuals and employers buy into it. But the idea there is at rather than like forcing people off of stuff they may currently like you let them transition to insurance it should be cheaper. And better over time. And the downside of that is like maybe it's harder to get that pricing advantage because you have more hospitals or doctors say, I'm just not gonna take any Medicare at all. I'm gonna stick with the private insurers, although. You know, by the same token, if they're going to be that opposed to Medicare to Medicare for all you're going to have other political problems that are that are hard to surmount. But I think this is a real thing. It's like should you have private insurance at all? And even if you don't want to have private insurance are is it really plausible to go to one hundred and eighty million Americans or even more. If you think of people like, Medicaid and Medicare Advantage and say to them, we're gonna take what you have. And you have to trust us what we're gonna put in its place. It will be better. I don't think that this is about any of those things or like anything at all like just tonight list. About whether Bernie Sanders should be the twenty twenty dominee that I think has like virtually no content to it like. This Bernie Sanders Bill is like not going to be law. Like, it doesn't matter at all this like hair-splitting about like what was Cory Booker saying. Or like, should we settle? I think there's a debate about like Sanders had this Bill, and then a bunch of people signed onto the Bill because they didn't want to let Bernie Sanders gets his left. Then Kaiser family foundation did a poll, and what they found in the poll is that the popularity of Medicare for all is very susceptible to framing facts. Right. And so they demonstrate this very clearly by showing that like this like wild swings. It's twenty and especially at employer-sponsored when when you make particularly different things salient. Right. So one thing they found the way they tested..
