when I was ten years old remember moving from Washington DC and coming to California's in in DC I they I didn't see kids played with pass and all of a sudden here I am and I'm like wow this is so mazing so cool and and yet you know with our kids my son you know said what are you thinking I was like well you know what do you think and he's like well I like playing touch and it's fine with me I said Okay and and you know we we both decided that you know there was going to be a point where he was going to be able to enter into a high school in and be able to play the game and so he he didn't put pads on before then he played with his buddy like all of us sometimes you're big enough sometimes strong enough in and so I did not play for Russell football on the other hand Ryan who when you when when he was younger and coming out of high school I didn't he would be the the the the kind of man he is today in in the sides that had and so you never know and and he did grow when he got bigger and and became you know a linebacker of all things and and ended up playing the national football league the question is really around when you start and I think that that to me in today's game it's really centered around you know one the aspirations but to if you think that you're worried and you think that you should not allow that to happen it didn't beep you know take the across precautions and find yourself saying you know what there's going to be a time when I feel like he's sturdy enough strong enough to be able to play but I would never trade the experience of being young men the reason that boy scouts is so amazing is that around young men you get a chance to understand the the challenges the difficulties and I think that the game of football is about the relationships in the friendships it's it's not about out what we see in terms of the competition I've always felt that there's nothing better of being around great men and learning from them and understanding their issues and understanding the challenges and problems that's you know if if you think about that aww that's one of the great things that we did see with the does you know fatherhood programs that they had a bunch of women that were there sharing being vulnerable and caring and talking allowing all of us to become better at hopefully this gift of being able to take care of our kids so yeah I think the kids should learn about the game of Football but I think they should learn about the game of life of having great relationships in knowing that using count on people to support but you and help you and and and and whether you win or lose you lose together where you win together and you find ways to you know deal with those losses and find ways to deal with those winds yeah very well said and you were one of if not the hardest hitting safety and ever play the game and you punish a lot of people on the field but what type of punishment did you hand out as a dad what type of disciplinarian where you as a father with the kids growing up you got to remember man I'm military Pratt and I'm I'm I was pretty tough you know they my my wife in kids always said there goes sour urgent lodge and so I had my moment of being you know tough but I I chose that because you know instinctively that's kind of the things that I live with I live with a lot of moments where you have to be on time I have to do certain things you have to have chores you have to keep your locker clean you have to be able to huddle and do the huddle the right way and and so all those kind of disciplines are disciplines that I tried to share with my kids and more important I tried to share the disciplines of what I liked to have great relationships in and have fun and in the lavish love and care and also at the same time no that is ah the guy next to you or the person or the girl next to us going to find themselves you know sometimes disappointed on on in fact you didn't get your job done so they they're great lessons and in sports provides that and and being a dad like I was I enjoyed the discipline of make sure my kids Kinda saw the same things that I experienced what I was growing up as a kid yeah very cool and I know you got four Super Bowl rings and I believe you know Ryan would have been the only ones who have been able to see the I get a chance to see you at the Super Bowl winning the lombardi trophy yeah yeah yeah and you know that's there's you know the the great part of life is when you have those moments and you're able to share you're able to experience it and and you know it's funny I took my son Isaiah and I took him to the Patriots game when they were playing the giant and it was the you see the season and and we went to the game and we went on the field flip the coin and it was so amazing watching him and looking at the guys are looking at the whole thing and and and and then you realize that you were once there and and so he had his moment of being there you see it and be close with it and and and what we what we saw was that things that we see in life sometimes the the the sadness and the joy and you know the sadness over losing and the joy of winning and he had a great time and I think that sports is meant to have those kind of moments where you know it gets to share with with each other but you also get to learn he's out of little elements and that's what makes you know the relationship of being with whether it's with your daughters or with your sons that made this is so special yeah talking about sharing his special moment with your kids what was it like to have your family president with you there when you were inducted into the hall of fame on achievable and the reason it's unbelievable that you're amongst the people that you are the most as you as I was growing up in those amazing heroes amazing leaders amazing people inspired me they challenged me and you know the Great Deacon Jones he was there and Deacon Jones when I was a kid taking chose that you'd be the best I don't care what you who I don't care if you're a garbage man I want you to be the best at in our member sitting here listening to you I was about twelve thirteen years old at the time and I realized that I'm GonNa try somebody giving you that gift and somebody sharing that with you inspired me and and and now here here I am standing you know next to him and it made me realize that there are so many kids that you can you know you can amplify that message to and hopefully their kids out there that you know we'll hear and learn that you can be the best and you can be the best at whatever you do and he can point was doesn't have to be a football player you could be the best garbage man and I love it because we have a guy that's a great garbage man he's unbelievable and we wrote a letter talking about how great he is and and in how he inspires us and and and and my point is that you know we all strive to be our best and and and it's a great quality always you are trying and communicating you have a chance yeah right on with that and you have had just incredibly success the people that all they kept doing it and even though the disease was taking their life they just kept playing they kept giving everything winging and to me that's all I wanna do and until one is exhaust life and and try to do as much as you can as a lot of different people in a lot of different ways and you know with all stars we've been able to kind of find a way to empower hiring people to believe that you know your your organization can change the world and so we we help a lot of nonprofits that are startups in trying to get them to see that you know all it takes is an opportunity to help somebody in the service and challenges and problems you think you know people that go out and serve to seniors and get them medicines and you can go down all the way bad love is that there will be moments where you're gonNA love and still feel bad because you had discipline and so but star down took some time.

"In his daughter. He's launching a new podcast, and for you know, he wants to get a little promotion for it. It's we'll we'll find out all that's about a mental edge in sports, and mindfulness and all that. But I guess he's doing the media tourists. You know? So he did it hit with with Matt maiocco. Who's a good friend of ours and be on tomorrow actually came up with a great anecdote about Kentucky pass rusher. Josh Allen who the by draft at number two, quite quite frankly, and Ronnie Lott gives us award called the impact award for achievement on and off the field like Ronnie, right? Some big time people have won it and the guy who wanted to show Josh Allen wanted, but it came with this anecdote from mayo and Ronnie Lotte the podcast here. This is the fifteenth year of the annual Lott impact trophy awarded to a college football player defensive college football player. So impact stands for an acronym. That stands for integrity maturity performance. Academics community and tenacity. In the winter this year is Josh Allen in Josh Allen told me after he won the award. He goes I had to Google who you were. Wow. We're we spent some time in the six o'clock hour riffing on that about what is expected at today's youth. But we would have thought Ronnie Lott would have been a pretty low bar to clear in knowing about the great NFL feel like that's a name. You gotta know. Even if you don't know you're not intimately familiar with the guys resume. It's just like when we were kids having an awareness about guys like Johnny United or Bart star or dick Butkus, Jim Brown. Like, these are names. Like, we would here certainly never saw him play. But like we would know enough back then to be like Jim Brown. He was one of the great ones. Like you. Gotta know. Ronnie love a disrespect. Yeah. If you play defense, you gotta know who Ronnie Lott is Lawrence Taylor symptomatic of the sort of the whole new generation of, you know, whether we call them millennials or see a post millennial. I'm not even sure it's still know the history of the game they're playing right. I mean like IV curious, and this is not like a joke. I'd be curious to know if he actually is heard of Lawrence Taylor because he and Ronnie came in the league the same year. I believe eighty one where they were both rookies. Good question. So if you don't know Ronnie. Do you know LT as he respected the game? He got an award named after somebody that he didn't know what he did his whole Murphy up sticks up for him. But where's the guy from see the disrespect? Jerseys who probably knows LT. There you go. So I bet you not that makes it even more offenses. Yeah. Bet you he knows the teams in his history and his family pronounce personal called. This is your out of the mix. Now. Now, six jersey guy. No jersey guy who's going to rush. I'm not defending Lawrence Taylor. No. I know you're not. But I'm saying this kid, Josh Allen. He's probably been told all Lawrence Taylor. Oh, you well t. Yeah. Well, I don't know. Maybe he does. But it does bring into larger question is to is the is there a general? Well, we talked about Cody Bellinger, not knowing Seinfeld suspectful. Today. Don't assign more personal than Seinfeld. Yeah. Well, I I know I'm coaching a lot of kids. And I I run things by them. And they don't always know who we're talking about. Although some kids do like Seinfeld. How about this? Why don't you ask a group of your kids? Murph grew up in the bay area who Jeff Kent is or who Kirk reader is. And I bet you a majority of accused can't compare. Compare Ronnie Jeff Kenna in this like they live right here. And that's a that's a guy from right beyond their leader. He tried to throw Ronnie wired or greedier. Melted reader along Kirk lives in Missouri. When he's talking to for the giants forever. Reader. Bro. One of the winningest left of his what are we talking cope when you change when you change the oil on your dad's car, do you put a big poster of Ronnie Lott underneath the car. So the trip all over this as your disrespecting Roddy? And just wondering bleeds and other areas of your life, not disrespecting racy on your dartboard network. He found out who Ronnie Lott was because he was getting an award named after Ronnie's, Murph. I appreciate the kids honest. Let me do a little psychoanalysis on cope right here. You see what's going on? Now. I know a lot going on. But he is it's really more. I think about him in Kentucky. This is love. Okay. I can fan some more. That's true. I can is comes from some more flames in your in your rage. Now. Phil Simms went to Moorhead state, which is in Kentucky. So that's a connection there. I'm just trying to throw this mentions Phil Simms and not Ronnie. Now, we got a serious problem. Seven seven says the kid is Twenty-one what age would you let it slide at what age is he supposed to spend his ample free time watching vintage NFL film. It's sound about that you it wasn't like. Football platter? Now. That's the point is he's watching like should be watching game film. The tell you this all these kids love the top ten shows on the NFL network. That's a fact so if you spend any time watching these top ten shows Ronnie's on a like a ton of those great a Super Bowl teams greatest defensive players great. He's littered throughout the top ten series to text right now. Five one zero says team copes five five nine says Copeland uses Ronnie Lott. Toilet paper. He does that as well. Drew Brees toilet paper. Ninety five hundred the kids from jersey. Correct me if I'm wrong didn't his stint with the jets like we say gangrene lot of people. Don't know. Two nights is when Josh comes for his visit with the Niners. Ronnie should be the first one degree them, right or copes. One six says, this is exactly what scares me about millennials airport and possess. Try this on give them a Phil Simms jersey. Now, if this fits this is exactly what scares you about millennials running the country. No sense of history. See what I'm saying? Oh now, it's a shot at millennials because no question. Yes. No question, whose fault was this gen Xers? Oh, Mr. Mr.. Participation trophy who? Meanwhile, four or five says is this guy going to do anything? That's what he says. This year's version of the giants to keep it at one hundred seventy seven with a very clever. Murph old man yells at cloud. I've never heard that. Where'd you get that for twenty years? Fresh materials, you gotta stay pissed seven zero seven others. This was he supposed to exit the womb with this knowledge. Yes. Of course, he was seven. See another seven zero seven says, I'm team poly. You have to know Ronnie Roddy law now man, this is like we're not talking about Chet. Brooks says we're talking about Ronnie Lott in five four or five says the reason millennials like copes don't appreciate respect is because they don't get any. And the reason I don't get any is because they don't deserve. It's genetic. Man. Mac are mad. They're old. I'm not old. I'm a young man as I saw a little Wayne tweeted out the other day. He said, hey, let me tell you all something. I've been your age you've never been mine. So listen up that's best one. I've. I've ever heard I tell you what they've been your age. Jerry Rice was a Seahawk. Ronnie Lott was jet on a one in fifteen jet team. And by the way. So I was in jersey at that time when Ronnie hit the scene, so I used to watch all the jet games. This is pre NFL network pre kind of everything pre satellite. You can only get two games. A local games hated the giants guts. And I would I would look forward to watching gangrene. "Homer in jail on the fan. CBS sports network. Joining us. Former said dad Sam darnold Joe, Montana. Adams, Ronnie Lott got a lot of people. I think that football talker put up a headline Gomorrah size and says darnold Adams next month. Yes. Exactly. Just like, you know, this this is why it's kind of interesting. So I was telling him that I got a text from one of my buddies on the Las hockey team that I run and he thinks that I'm on painkillers warning because of my knee injury and everything else that I must be hallucinating by putting darnold and and Adams in the same sentence. Montana and lot and he obviously is on painkillers. Not listening listening to how I framed it. And what I said, you know, when I got into the NFL I wanted to be the next per Jones. That's what I wanted to try to play football like that guy. Well, what's wrong with that? What's wrong with having high expectations and trying to reach spots. Exactly. What you should. These are morons that play hockey team. And you wonder why get upset with them? Listen, you still play those games still going on off season. No, there's no off-season around a little bit of a mild off season right now. But we get ready for tournaments and things that and the best part is what time of the game said depends, what time could they be at anywhere between eight and nine thirty. Man, when are you going to get back out? They ruining you'll be able to skating, I'm working on it right now. And that's why I had to get this done and get it done quickly and upset anything and take a few three or four weeks off. Now. Yeah. Yeah. I got a saying that I've never had done before. So I didn't know what I was getting myself into look I thought you'd be limping more. But now, I got a great doctor. Doctor nNcholas is awesome. Took good care of it all of the doctor, Nick. Yes. That is not as the doctor. He's the man, I'm all good. He's done some big time surgeries out there. Yes, he has some New York athletes have gone under the nNcholas knife. That's may also you are Jerry's back with an update what's going on. Jerry earlier. We heard the call of the ninety seven yard touchdown run for Lamar Miller by Kevin Harlan. Oakland mayor on what went wrong with Raiders
"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Oakland mayor on what went wrong with the raiders by Scotto slur from sports. The happy feet raiders are nearing the end of their most recent stay in Oakland, and who's to blame for owner. Mark Davis moving his team to Las Vegas. Not Oakland says mayor Libby, chef I had a recent phone conversation with chaff who is up for reelection Tuesday, and is considered the favourite. The interview was regarding the as and their search for a site for a new ballpark in Oakland. When our as discussion ended, I said, can I ask you a raiders question? They should not have traded Khalil Mack chef shot back the curse of the MAC. I think the raiders are suffering from the MAC curse shaft who was elected mayor in two thousand fourteen was born and raised in Oakland and said, she's always cheered for the local teams through her first three years in office. Shaft tried to negotiate with the raiders on a new stadium at the Coliseum site in April last year, the raiders announced their NF. Fell sanctioned decision to move to Las Vegas. My question to the mayor. Do you think the raiders made a good faith effort to stay in Oakland? Hell no shaft shot back unequivocally. No. There was no good faith there at all. So owner Mark Davis seemed dead set on moving his team to Vegas deadset. No effort whatsoever. I can't speak to the time before I was mayor. And I want to recognize that the raiders I think when I came in as mayor. There was a lot of years of legitimate frustration that they were feeling but during my time as mayor no good faith efforts were made. No every plan through the years has been complicated. By the fact, that the Coliseum land is owned jointly by the city and county. And by the fact that the raiders a showed little or no interest in working with one. Another also any deal, including proposals with outside developers would have required using part of the site for commercial development which Davis opposed but chef was aggressive in pursuing a deal between the time. She took office. In January twenty fifteen and Davis final decision to move to Las Vegas in January twenty sixteen the mayor brought plans and ideas to the table, but the raiders were not eager participants. I Ashraf whether it bothered her that she and Oakland officials have been cast in the role of villains by Davis. And some of his team's fans for not trying hard enough to keep the team. You know, honestly, I have been pleasantly surprised chef said, I think that actually the residents of Oakland had been refreshingly supportive, and understanding that the city took a principled stand. And while we were all sad that we lost our beloved team. We did. So in principle, I actually have been encouraged by the amount of understanding, and in many ways support that I got from how I handled the matter chef is probably getting even more support these days as the raiders are in freefall with they want a seven record and head coach Jon Gruden presiding over what looks more each day like a complete rebuild the benefits of which won't be much. Good to Oakland fans since the raiders are likely to move. Out after the season when they're Coliseum. Lease expires. I mentioned a shaft that Davis had a few years ago that he would be happy to build a no frills stadium in Oakland for under a billion dollars. And now his team's share of the new Vegas stadium. Costs will probably approach what he would have spent to stay in Oakland shaft said how we were going to finance the new stadium in Oakland was through more development on the giant surface parking lot, which he refused to give up a single parking space. And I understand that they're not going to have the parking spaces at the Vegas stadium. So again, I think there is ample evidence that there was not a good faith effort to stay because the deal that we presented with Ronnie Lott was an absolutely viable shuffle ready deal that the raiders walked away from did that shocker. Yes. Yes. I shouldn't say I was completely shot because the raiders had stonewalled for the entire time that I was mayor, but the NFL allowed them to do that when their own league policy state that they're going to give the hallmark it every chance to be successful. That was surprising. And that was very disappointing. The raiders through team president Mark Bayden declined to respond to shafts comments. Multiple sources told me that Davis rejected any plan or proposal at the Coliseum site. If that plan called for one less parking space than is. Currently there Coliseum site has about eight thousand parking spaces, the new Las Vegas stadium will have fewer than three thousand spaces on site. According to the Las Vegas sun. There will be fourteen thousand spaces offsite with most fans shuttling to the stadium. The lot proposal backed by predominantly African American group of investors and initially given NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's stamp of approval would have set aside fifteen acres for the as if they chose to stay at the Coliseum site. The group plan to build hotels and restaurants on the site. The city would kick in two hundred million dollars for infrastructure. The raiders did not actively participate in those negotiations. Oakland ficials have said that before the raiders announced their moved to Las Vegas. The city had not been able to meet direct. With Davis for more than a year in a dear John letter to Oakland. Goodell said a key sticking point was Oakland refusal to tell the as to take a hike. Davis has said that what finalized his decision to move to Vegas was Oakland tripling the raiders rent at the Coliseum in early twenty sixteen after the league shot down the raiders attempt to move to Los Angeles. So the team owner who was aggressively attempting to move his team to LA was angered by the perceived disloyalty of Oakland and its mayor.

Them down because, I don't want to forget anybody thought it'd be worth mentioning that at least I saw but I don't have that list in, front of me right now but top of my head Eddie DeBartolo. Joe Montana Steve Young Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice Roger Craig George, Siefert Mike Holmgren Chris Berman, from ESPN awhile former, mayors of San Francisco Willie Brown, mayor, Jordan Nancy Pelosi was on hand how, about the Commissioner of the, NFL Roger Goodell I can't, believe he was, there And. I know, I'm leaving out tons of people. So I am sorry Dwight Hicks Brent. Jones jesse's pool oh wow Dave Louis go all day on the guests Merton Hanks on and on and on and and you know, what struck me man was just that there was some Dwight. Was a guy who touched a lot of people and he made the. Made you feel like you knew him he made you, feel like it was cool that. You were hanging out he was, never like I'm. A star and you're listening never an ego trip, like that and I know with your band the stone, foxes you guys are out on the road a lot and I know you've run into a lot of people and certainly I would guess you've run across established Rockstars. Jerks and establish Rockstars, that are sort of cool. And, Dwight was one of those guys in his own field he. Was a rockstar and he was incredibly cool well and what you're talking about with all these people, coming, in I, was amazed at the list. And I, talked about the list of, the names not just because. Oh they're celebrities but because it's a family I? Mean what they cultivated down there Down in. Santa, Clara. The headquarters, was a real family what Eddie. Put together that team Yup and how. The city and people like Pelosi you've been there forever and Willie Brown like those guys saw that happen in everybody jumped on board, and that that's so cool that these guys come together like. Family like they're done doing football but it's with them for Shannon yes. It really is a family kind of feeling that a, built and by the way it. Should be fair to the new, regime because I. Saw those guys to Al Guido York John Lynch, Dr York you know they were all there to obviously, and you know they were all paying their respects and but you're right man it was a fait there was a family atmosphere at play there and I'm gonna tell. You my one Dwight, Clark story it's very very. Insignificant, minor but it's just kind of like the moment when I. Realized I was like I think like maybe I might be friends with white Clark Nah I think, this, is official, that's cool it was years. Ago so, I didn't know Dwight like A lot of people for as long as a lot of people in these parts did and I, was frankly as I am, with a lot of these guys? Shannon. I'm always a little standoffish because I just want to be respectful I don't wanna come rushing by go my God dude I love you when you played and stuff I just, let them, do their, thing and, if the moment comes where it's, like natural to me shake somebody's saying I'll definitely do, that eagerly but at. The same time I. Don't want to overstep and chill right let, these guys do their things so but one day and. I had, done a couple, of events with Dwight over the years like and I've been on with Murph, only on the air since oh six so you know golf. Tournaments, here and there we maybe. See good. White hey what's up, man emerged from MAC Tahoe perhaps I don't think I ever got him a, tall but other golf, events you know there's a lot of different tournaments, and, over the years Murph knew him I did not but it was. Very casual has gone Dwight good, to see you, and. That's the only. Team maybe a football game. Okay maybe some kmby or event hop. Up but generally wasn't very overly kind of familiar with Dwight, off the field, so one day this maybe. Twenty ten twenty eleven right in there somewhere I was giants game, in? The Cambridge suite which is right above, the club level and I was watching the game and I have my back to the door which is the entrance to the sweet and I'm just standing. There, watching. The game and, also somebody comes up behind me bear hugs me lifts. Me, off the ground I didn't see this. Person So. I was like whoa yeah puts me down. A turnouts do I Clark And I was like. What I was. Shocked. I had no first of. All I had, no idea he was there okay no idea who was coming so, the register the, shock, that, I felt? When? He did that I turned around I, was, like oh Dwight what's up man how you doing. Dwight. And he, goes, man I'm just, coming in to say? Hello to you man he's like I I'm, an go are, you, are you our guest. Today wasn't a game up here and, he goes nah I'm going down here I'm a, guest, in some, other sweet but. I was walking by and I was like. Okay that's paulie MAC right there and he, came, in, and bear hug me and, I'm like from that, point on. Like well okay Dwight if you're hugging me I'm gonna start hugging you do so we're going to be friends like this now and there's a difference. Between a. Bear, hug and, coming up. Behind somebody left the ground my feet all kidding use, strong dude. Big strong he's a wide receiver in, the NFL for a, very, very strong, and you see before. He got ill he was incredibly handsome, charismatic fun guy, funny, sense of humor. So. Anywhere, from that. Point on channel I, figured, like. Okay me and Twitter cool. He he didn't Have to do that, he didn't have, to, stop, coming into? The? Sweet hug me and then go back, down, to watch the game from wherever he was going. But. He did, and, it meant a, lot to me and? From that point on we were always very, friendly with each, other, the story that touched. Me was when you were talking this, morning to Kobe bow when you got home from, the, service yeah, and and you. Said you started talking to your wife about. The memorial and what had happened who spoke, and, you, started getting emotional I was, going to ask you, is there. A memory in your head or someone's voice in your head that when you when you heard it again you that's that's when it kinda Gotcha well. Two things. Yeah, man for, sure one. Of them was Joe listen to Joe Montana talk about, his friend. That way worst powerful man is really, powerful and to see, that, he was, hurting to see Joe. Hurting like that like there was joy, there but there, was, also sadness like. His. Friend has gone Yeah so Joe really hit me hard with his words excuse me and then. I don't think I'm betraying any, confidences here so I'll just say this and this is a guy I love dearly but I saw Ronnie Lott I, didn't, talk. To him yesterday but. I. Saw, him he. Looked, like, he was. He was he was in. Some pain my guy. Could tell there was some sadness. On Ronnie's face so that affected me yeah just saying it's totally natural and I don't blame him and, I had a look on, my face to I'm sure but seeing Ronnie like that Peering Joe like that yeah that was, those were, some powerful moments you know Yeah gosh. It maybe After all. We're going to? Go you. Know what we'll do we'll take a. Break in the action that's. Bringing. A Ryan Kovac okay. I guarantee he's. Gonna lighten this up he'll talk about the new Niners and what's going on. Down. In Santa Clare yeah on that note though we do say. Farewell to Dwight Clark we all love him and we all will miss him. And we do now and that's our. Tribute on the paulie MAC. Podcast on kmby here six eighty came..
