"I'm Gretchen Rubin, and this is a little happier. I spent a lot of time thinking about how we can make our lives happier, healthier, more productive and more creative and one thing I believe very strongly. Is that to be happy? We have to build our lives on the foundation of our own nature, our own interests, our own temperament. There's no magic one size fits all solution. We each must decide what's true for us. And because of that I feel very strongly that we want to be purposeful about what we do. We don't WanNA drift into a career or life situation. Just because it's the easiest path to follow. We don't WanNa do what other people expect from us without asking whether we want to expect it from ourselves. We don't want to jump on other people's suggestions without reflection. I written several times about the problem drift, which is the decisions we make by not deciding or by making a decision that unleashes consequences for which we don't take responsibility. However what my aphorisms is! The opposite of a profound truth is also true. And on the one hand I think, don't drift purposeful. But I have to admit that I have witnessed and also experienced many examples of when someone takes action based on a passing comment or a lighthearted suggestion or a brief word with enormous benefit. Sometimes someone throws out an idea. We follow it without giving it much thought and it's invaluable. I thought of this aphorism when I was recently reading. The Brilliant Memoir broken places in outer spaces by a writer his work. I Love Nettie occur for this book is very short, but so thought provoking so now. The core finished her first year of college. She was tennis star. She loves science. She was pre, and she also loved Mogae, but after her freshman year she had an operation on her spine. That left her paralyzed for a time. Eventually after tremendous effort, she regained the function of her legs, but her life is an athlete was over and science no longer compelled her. She felt lost. Then this happens. So she has a good friend Damani to whom she'd been writing long letters epic letters. She says she writes in the book about a conversation they had. Then Damani said one of the most valuable things anyone has ever said to me, or since you're gonNA writing stories. He said waving the letter at me. Maybe you should take a creative writing class. I considered asking him. What's creative writing? But I didn't want to sound stupid, so I just said I'll check it out. I was so enamored with Mr Damani Ronel Harris that the next semester I signed up for an introduction to creative writing class without really looking at the course description. The result was immediate that class aligned all the planets scattered about my shattered universe, as I sat there, listening and learning and eventually writing everything to focus, it was big bang. Garrity I finally heard my calling. A few pages later in the memoir, she writes by the time the semester was over I'd stop using my cane. I was writing my first novel. Nettie record for his gun onto immense success as a writer, she's won numerous prizes for her adult fiction and young adult fiction. Much of her work is being developed by HBO for. TV or movies she's also written comics for Marvel. It seems like eventually. She would have found her way to writing. But as it happened, it was a casual suggestion by a friend that started her down the right path. He was able to see something about her that she didn't yet see for herself. On the one hand. We don't want to drift. On the other hand. Maybe sometimes a little drift is good. If you want to read more about the work of Nettie Cora for a link to it in the show notes and also linked to post about drift. I'm Gretchen Rubin help. This makes your week a little happier..

"Yes. And my thought today is we're actually what yesterday is that. If he gets this money from the Pentagon and able to your finances were wall, then then what will Nancy and in the rest of them say about that. Because they said they were gonna take it to the courts relevant. Report rhetorical. But they will then appear to be against what he's four which is to control the border. That's right. And in the in the rant. I kinda laid that out from a legal perspective, the house could vote, and of course, they vote against it. And they'd have to convince the Senate to vote against it. And then Donald Trump would veto that in all likelihood, it would go back to the house and the Senate they gotta come up with a two thirds majority to overturn that veto and that ain't going to happen. And again, that's the political side of it. The legal side of it. The case would have to wind its way to the United States Supreme court, and there are a lot of people in this country. And I'm one of them given the new makeup of that United States Supreme court. I don't think they're going to tell the president. Hey, president the court should decide what a national emergency is not the president. Yeah. He's commander in chief. So he's in charge of. Military. He's in charge of protecting you the country when you think about it. I mean, he's top guy on that. And I just I let you Nancy and check them, you know, as a Representative of all that that you described because they're running scared that the normal good thinking Americans are are not follow them. You know, they're just not on their page and knows they're running scared on what the future holds for for their party, and their are, you know, hopefully, Paul you're right about that. And hopefully, the American people are watching and getting it. I mean, I just hope people get it. I mean, this is all about protecting Americans. It's not all about building a voter base. And Paul thanks for your call. And it's just there for the world to see again a couple of weeks ago. You have the horrible tragic example of corporal Ronel saying police officer being killed in the line of duty shot in cold blood by someone who never should've been in this country, a completely and totally preventable death. I just hope people when they think about this issue. They think about that. But who knows we will have to see let me go to Bobby. In hamilton. What you got body? Hey, Mike, I got three quick points for you. First of all I'd like him to hold off a little bit. I think he is. That's what he said yesterday at least. Yeah, we changed. "From coach learn from coach Houser from coach Kaz and grew a lot as a coach there, and then left for a year had it had an opportunity to take over my own position. And then it was blessed again coach hired me back and got to go coach on the offense aside, and then coached the quarterbacks for the last four years. So almost on accident. It's like you. You've got your finger in a whole bunch of different pies. I'm guessing it's probably made you a better question. No question. And coach said that's an actually early on. When I was a and he said, if you wanna be a great coach coach both sides of the football because you'll learn football. And he was absolutely right. I seen it from the quarterback position. But then you learn it from the defensive back position learning linebacker position. And then you come back to the offense assign and I got to spend that year coaching tight ends and learn from coach Wooster working with the offensive line every day and. And then you get an opportunity to coach the quarterbacks, and and you just teach it from a different perspective. So it's it's again, it's been a blessing one of the things that certainly makes you a better coach is is being a master at making hype fills. Let's make no mistake. No, all jokes aside. And all that I brought this up earlier. I remember I vote voice them for you back in the day. And it's interesting because of Josh Ronel is listening. I can see him being right now. Because those guys remember those videos like we'll be driving in the car to a game or something come on. He'll go. Oh that was a song hype Diddy in two thousand ten oh that was a song from the two thousand eleven video and things like that. I mean, I that that had to be fun for you. I mean, I know how much you put into it. But with that said when you see the reaction, that's it. That's it right there. I saying until three in the morning. Working with moviemaker one was not fun when it shut down at one o'clock in the morning, and you had to start over but seeing their reaction, and and you know, I think your job as a coach is to inspire your players and. It's not an ego thing. But obviously they love that. And that was awesome. Last thing before we let you go and again coach word and kind enough to join us here on winners on Wednesday. I don't want you to give anything away to be sure, but look at grand valley. I mean, everybody knows what they'd been how hard it is to go to Allendale. "A beautiful campus top Taggart field. You look you see all the colors around you. But I'll tell you what a great place to be on a Saturday afternoon. And we got a good one. So far ferris state has a ten seven lead over your warriors. Three thirty seven to go here in the first quarter ferris state, just converted on a twenty seven yard field goal. Let's see if the warriors can keep some of that good. Mojo going short kick taken at the fifteen yard line. Lewis starts to the right side. Makes it cut it. The twenty-five hit at the twenty seven and false sport to about the twenty nine. He's got the look warriors are going to be set up there like rock set with a first and ten at their own twenty nine yard line. And let's not forget that that lasts drive-by. Fair state started with barris taking over on the surprise onside kick after Wayne State just scored barris recovered at around their own forty five. So they had a shorter field the work with so Wayne State holding them to a field goal is a pretty good job. Hold this high powered offense to just a field goal. I formation lavonia checks back and they swing the pass out. It's thrown at the feet of Therese Roberston Roberson took a step back was wide open had Corey ester as well off there as a block Josh is all the way to say it arm. I am right. Just kinda short armed. Amraam just threw a big touchdown pass a deep ball. This was only about ten yards in distance to the side of them at ball went straight to the ground. So I don't know if he lost control that or what? But it was not a good path. Second intent for the warriors at the twenty nine. The give is the lavonia lavonia around the corner. Thirty thirty five puts his head down driven out of bounds. But not before he gets it very close to a first down give lavonia gain of about nine. They're setting up a manageable third to those outside zone. Plays are big because you got to polling offense lineman leading the way. So that lowers the running back like hill the setup his blocks. He's able to get that you guys out in front, and he could either set the blocks up to get outside or cut it up inside that time he kept it outside picked up nine wildcat again, James hill as Amran lines up. They fake the jet hill. Keeps it dives up the middle. I. Down some trick array from Levonia there as Amran lined up farside, they sent Lewis in motion faking the jet in hill new where he had to go and he dove over that. I I'll I'll tell you what early on Wayne State four for five on third downs. That's pretty darn good and Ferris's they're gonna wanna try to stop giving. Wayne State these third and shorts. Once again, wildcat James hill on the keeper he's hitting the backfield. But being lavonia first contact isn't going to bring him down. He ends up punching his way up for a gain of a hard earned to there. I do like Wayne state's game plan, thus far the they're running the ball running the ball running the ball Amraam as if he's throwing the ball. They're there quicker shorter passes other than the one deep ball touchdown that they hit on the play action. So when he'd say it's going back to the bread and butter with run run play action pass Amraam back in the shotgun. Now, he's got hill on his right hip, three receivers split wide Amran roles wide. He's under pressure. He's just going to throw it away. Good decision. They're good coverage downfield saw he didn't have a lane to run and live to fight another day clock stops of buck forty nine to go. You're Josh in this first quarter ferris state up ten to seven the warriors face with a third and eight from their own forty four. Yard line. And. The way Wayne statesman going I I would have liked to see another run their James sales already eight carries twenty eight yards there if they keep getting the third and manageable. Then you could throw those passes. But now third long is asking for jacomb Ryan trip receivers farsight hill. The long setback Amran. Let's plenty of time. And he's got plenty of room. Now, he's gonna take off running puts his head down. He dies for the first down marker. But he's going to be short. He needed to get to the forty eight. He got to the fifty. So the warriors are going to be faced with a fourth and two situation it boy, I'll tell you what they're having a conversation about it. Now, they send out the punting unit. And that's a that's a that's a bold decision. And the reason I say that is your ready. No. Because you you did the onsite cake and gave the ball up to fares right around the same spot. I guess they don't wanna make that same mistake again. And give them a shore field. They're going to try and pin ferris deep, but never call out the fake punt either. Hines standing on his own thirty nine he's gonna fake it. Josh Ronel smell that. He's got the first down. Oh, baby. There was I I'm telling you why not why not do a fake punt. It seemed like the right spot to do it fares is coaching staff. Don't know they were expecting their not the lottery numbers for me tonight. But there are goes in Wayne State with a big first down. It was the partner that took off with the football. Well, done after we've talked about Wayne putting team having struggles this year, there's a big play for amount of fake Hines with a nine yard run. Now, I formation under center is an right back to pass. Let's see if he looks for some quick Jj. He's Philly's got Roberson at the twelve at the five eighties. So they're gonna come down at the one. Oh, he reached out and hit the pylon. I think they're going to say Josh that he's need touchdown at the one yard line before he reached out. But as it is a first and goal for the warriors on that forty yard pass. I think it's time to go to Livonia here. I think so too, Sean I think Wayne state's feeling pretty good. They're pulling all the stops and Ferris's in for ball game here. So far, I formation Amran under center. I don't know if they're going to get this playoff before the end of the first quarter. Let's see the letter on. I've seconds four seconds. Yeah. They're going to let it run. So your. Score after the first quarter play here at top tagger field. Ferris state on top by score ten to seven but the warriors when we come back in the second quarter with a first and goal from the one yard line. I'm going to play the role of Josh Ronel and say that lavonia is going to get the ball. We'll see if that happens when we come back. This is warrior football..

"Because obviously we have the decline of newspapers and newspaper subscriptions, so editors who used to have more ability to corden. Fight, subpoena order or argue for access to a particular forum don't have that anymore. And so that might make the enemy construction easier. But also it certainly makes it easier. I think for some of these restrictions on press freedoms to come about because we just don't have the resources in the mainstream media that there once were to fight the battles about press freedom to make the arguments that the press is the proxy. The people not to be in criminal trials in detention centers and federal prisons, and have that access and report on things for us. So that raises I think the existential question I wanted to end on if I could, which is this is a problem. We've talked about time and time and time again in this show, and it's the marriage of what Ronel said about erosion of norms and quick erosion of norms. But also this question of once you've been other, how do you respond without other ring? In other words, you know, we've talked so often on this show about judges can't talk back and you know institutions can't fight back in the f. b. I can't fight back and it seems to me that the press is another. One of those entities that is on the horns of the same dilemma, right? Win. Donald Trump says your Aligarh. The press can't say, no, no, you're the liar. And we have this problem now where the press is starting to say, no, you're the liar. It's starting to show up in headlines. It's starting to show up more and more in mainstream media coverage that if you other. Me, I'm going to other you back, and I worry only because I think it's cements the polarization right? It suggests that if you're going to say, I'm the enemy of the people might only recourse is to say, you're the enemy of the people in. I don't know that hearts and minds are changed when that kind of discourses happening. I know this is such a meta question, but if one of you wants to respond, I think as is often the case, when the press is vilified in called the enemy of the people, the press can either say, no, we're going to continue to be measured in the middle or we're fighting back and it. It feels like a lose, lose this Ronel and I, I think that's right. I think that is the major tension of our day in terms of press president relations. And it's very tricky if the president declares war against you, the press. Your instinct is to say, all right, we're at war and we'll fight the war back and it's much less effective. Sometimes it seems to say, no, we're not at war, right? That's very, very hard position to take that. We don't want this to be a war. We want this to be the ordinary check and balance. Fourth estate notion that we've always had, which is a cooperative endeavor towards democracy that sometimes has some tensions built into it because that's how checks and balances work in our country. I, I have two thoughts on this. The first is that. We must figure out a way to stave off an EMMY construction of the press. Because enemy construction is a theme of this administration in more ways than just the press right. So we see the administration constructing or attempting to construct enemies of entire races or entire religions, or people coming across the southern border or. Instant other institutions other democratic institutions like the intelligence community right. Right? Even the most conservative traditional. Institutions, the judiciary. We see several episodes in just the short time that Trump has been president of characterizing the judiciary as the enemy, and it needs to be said loudly and repeatedly that the press is our best shot at staving off those other enemy constructions because the press counters..

Yeah, you can't. You. Men are just, you know, they have to keep quiet. Well, that's not going to help and it. It's. It's actually going to ruin the movement. And now we have western. Aasiya are Gento, you know, got her complicated story. One of the things you learn when you study this is and I actually found it in this NYU case, I read his, he's suing and I read his complaint against Vitale Ronel and I thought she's a monster. This poor point, I felt so angry at her and protective of him. And then someone published a a letter that she wrote explaining her side, and then I read it and thought, Hm, gee, maybe maybe maybe he's, he's really out of control and he's the crazy one ear and you. You could see both sides and, oh yeah, that's why we have trials. If you're accused of something serious, it's I've learned that don't just go, you can't just believe people that's courts of law show that people, you know they misrepresented reality and so we have to sort it up. So let's talk a little bit about some of the problems that women do face interviews. We've talked about the idea, the wage gap being largely. False. The idea that there's a giant rape culture being largely false, the the kind of over blowing of the metoo movement. Not that women shouldn't come out. Everyone agrees woman who is abused in some way, should come forward and speak about. We should all be on her side when there's evidence that this has happened. But by the same token, the way it's being approach right now is deeply flawed and undermining the foundations, the movement, what problems do you see women generally facing in the west or in the United States that you think people aren't talking about enough, if any? Well, the thing is that women's problems are talked about a lot because for good reason, we had a women's movement. We have lots of organizations everywhere, and I actually see more problems for men right now. And men don't have a lobby, especially the little boys, and I wrote a book lower against boys..

"Geometry the hashtag me dilemma here is the problem of the. Day we have a lesbian humanities professor at elite university who is sexually harassing a gay male, student who is the, victim You don't need that much time right of, course it's the professor Her name is avatar Ronel she's sixty six. Years old professor of German and comparative literature at New York University she apparently is, the real victim even though she allegedly sexually harassed a former student the New York Times wrote about the. Whole ordeal in an article titled what happens to hashtag me too when a feminist is accused all we all know the feminist is in the right run l. quite publicly has been accused of sexually harassing Nimrod Reitman thirty. Four, years old graduate, student and, currently visiting visiting, fellow at Harvard now Rennell is an you know an academic rockstar one colleagues, described him one of the very few, philosophers stars of the world but the investigation concluded, that the teacher the professor was the one responsible for sexual harassment. Both physical and verbal to the, extent? That her, behavior was sufficient Pervasive, to alter the terms and conditions of the students learning environment so she was, suspended the accusations Raymond's claim that before, the school year in two thousand twelve Rennell invited, him to stay with her parents in Paris for a few days The day he arrived she asked. Him to read poetry to her in her bedroom while she took. An afternoon nap he said. That was a red flag but I, also thought okay. You're here let's not make a scene. Then. He said she pulled him into her, bed she put my hands on her breasts and she was. Pressing herself her buttocks onto my crotch she was kissing me kissing my hands kissing. My poor so that evening similar scene played out again he said from. Emails that he produced I woke up with a slight fever and a sore throat. I'll try very hard not to kiss, you. Until the throat situation receives security clearance this is not an easy deferral another. Email time for your. Mid day kiss my image during meditation were on the sofa your head on my lap stroking your forehead playing softly with your hair soothing you head Headache a gone yet yes. Most starting the startingly is the one from fifty. Of her colleagues all the educators from around the globe quote although. We have no access to. The confidential dossier we have worked many, years in close. Proximity to the professor and have accumulated. Collectively, years of experience to support our view, of her capacity as a teacher and a scholar but also. Someone who has served as chair of both the departments of German and comparative literature. At New York University we've all seen her relationship with students and some. Of us know the individual who has waged this malicious campaign against her and quote. So the student has been expelled the, professor. Is fine Now wanna take guess where. She stands on Trump She didn't like Donald Trump she says I take it as a regular rigorously necessary that Trump's mouth hole be the, flapping aperture to funnel floods of, racially unleashed aggression the toxic spill of his language part of the recourse to crucial intersection where Twitter meats Something else So here we have somebody who has. Two important so the cause sexually assaulting someone a young, gay man and she gets a, pass, because well she's in. The right she's in the. "Harassers. We've reached the stage me to where handful of prominent women have been accused of harassment. One is AUSSIE are Gento and. She is one of the main accusers of Harvey Weinstein, Ronan Farrow story in the New Yorker. The other is AVI tall Ronel a famous professor of both. This is important, German and comparative literature. And the amazing thing about that case is the lineup of famous academics who wrote letters in her defence, including feminist theorist, Judith Butler. Now, June, I'm gonna let you choose which of these two cases. And there are a few others which we will get to is more interesting to you to discuss. Oh, this is hard because clearly we don't have the full panoply of information. You know, we don't have all of the all of the stuff, but I have to say the attell Ronal story is the one that was both kind of delicious and troublesome to read an also kind of got the elicited the most like tweets of, hey, hope you're going to talk about this or just like in conversation people. I did. You see that story like there's something about two is both disturbing all too. Relatable. And at the same time, like full of gossipy details that there is kind of a. Like kind of a semi? I don't know. I don't. I don't quite know the word. It's not enjoyment because that's that's the wrong kind of tone. But it was something very, very compelling about it. That was was I have a slight feeling of guilt for being so into the story. I would say shocking. That's the word I would use. I was just shot. I feel like this opened my eyes to the dynamics of sexual harassment had think differently about it particularly because Judith Butler was involved and her views of gender. I mean, that's I just found it amazing. Why don't we just who the details. Okay. If the details. 'cause they're unusual. Exactly. So Vitale Ronel is a professor and why you, as you said of Germany, parts of literature. Apparently, you know, a lead leader in her field and she was accused of and she was accused of, and I should say an an eleven month title nine investigation. And why you phoned that named road Reitman who was her graduate student set claim that he'd been sexually harassed? He. Had all kinds of evidence because professor Ronel was not particularly shy about putting things in Email. She didn't seem to be taking care to avoid there being evidence. It was not found that there was enough evidence to say that she sexually abused him, but among the. So there were all these emails with very lovey dovey things. He said that she had a multiple occasions kind of caused him to cause them to sleep in the same bed groped him. You know the and I don't know. There's so many diesels. I don't quite know which ones to to to focus on, but you know things that that if it was a woman and a man, you know if the roles were reversed, we would have no seeing them as absolutely sexual harassment, at least now, but some of the details. So Reitman is gay. He's thirty four Ronel is a lesbian or calls herself a queer woman. She sixty six. And so that was kind of a factor that I think add to the both the shock level and also the kind of confusion level like, so this lesbian is is sexually harassing. This gay man, which of course is a little bit of a narrow definition of sexual orientation and also Ronel in her own defense said that the these terms of endearment and these, the language that she used was a reflection of both their shared Israel. Heritage and the kind of camp style of communication. This often used inquiry communities. So that was something that I was very curious about because it's true that different communities, you know, you have different in groups, styles of communication, and certainly like I'm aware that. So for example, somebody who I communicate with regularly who's a Latino journalists will end emails with like vessels or Nebraska or something like that, which if it was not if I didn't recognize the cultural signs in that community could be misconstrued. And so I'm curious what you make of that particular aspect of it, Hannah. The n..
