"Imagine you've just been told that your child has a very serious medical condition that requires an unknown amount of time in the hospital. And an extensive amount of time away from home. What do you do? Where do you go? If you had an option of a home away from home, wouldn't that make the challenge is a bit more manageable? Our first guest today is going to share why the outpouring of support to build a house where families could stay while their Children are in the hospital is affectionately called the House that love bills. Then we're going to learn about a home away from home. That is an extension of the WVA for veteran and military families. My first guest today is an Petri, president and CEO of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Wisconsin. Welcome to the show today. An thank you. It's good to be here. We're happy to have you here and hear all about Ronald McDonald house. Um, So what is it about the house that appeals to your passion? Family is a passion of mine and everything about Ronald McDonald House is about keeping families together during a really difficult time in their life. So as a mother of four daughters. I actually was able to use the Ronald McDonald house when my oldest daughter was seriously ill as an infant. And from that moment on, I always knew that if I had, and when I have the time to give back, I wanted to do it. In part with Ronald McDonald House. So I was fortunate enough to be accepted as a board member. And after serving on the board for about 4.5 years, I transition to the role of president Go, and it spent nine years and I have not looked back from them. And I'm sure when you have a personal experience with an organization that makes it really easy to get involved. I imagine right it is and I always say to our friends who come through and get to visit the house that You can never leave without feeling grateful. It is hard to not be passionate and not feel gratitude every day as we in our own small part, add to the experience that our families receive when they're at Ronald McDonald House. Relationships with our donors and friends, the relationships with families, the relationships that we have with our wonderful volunteer base. All add to why it is exciting to be here, and I'm just so honored to be in my role. Well, and a lot of people myself included. We have heard about the rattle McDonald house. I mean, probably everybody has and we know what provides wonderful support for families. But there may be some people who aren't aware of all the different things you guys do. So can you take a little bit of time and and talk about the house and the services you provide? Yes, I would be happy to so many people believe that a Ronald McDonald house is just a place to stay. But when you are a family who stays at the Ronald McDonald House, you not only have a warm and comfortable bedroom, but you also have programs. You also have the community of up to 70 families who stay with us each night and it is through those communities that are families can gain support. And share with each other because no one knows better what it feels like to go through this than another family who is experiencing a significant illness or injury of their child. There's no one better to talk about that experience than a family. So I'm just so honored to have with me. Tiffany Tiffany and her family. Had stayed here a few years ago. Her daughter, Lydia, is now a beautiful nine year old and I would just be so appreciative of Tiffany sharing her story about the community and the support that she received from Ronald McDonald House. Okay, Tiffany, let's let's hear how the rattle McDonald house has affected you and impacted your family. Thank you for having me and thank you for allowing me to share what the Ronald McDonald house is done for our family. So we found out when I was pregnant that my daughter was having some complications. So July 25th 2011. I walked out of our home and I wasn't sure. Be giving birth that date or I'd be admitted to the hospital. And I ended up not walking back into my home until six months later. So we went in, and we had our daughter and I was able to stay in the hospital a couple nights. And the last thing from my mind was, Where are we going to be as a family? We were informed that, um our child would be in the hospital indefinitely. They weren't really sure if she was going to make it. And so, um That was kind of furthest thing from our mind, but One thing that made it really hard was when my parents brought down my older two girls, Um, we couldn't find a hotel room. There was a conference in Milwaukee and they had every single hotel felt And so my parents were lucky to get a hotel room for one night, And then they bounced another hotel room. And then they had to drive three hours back home. Um, because there were there were no rooms. So we were unfortunate enough to get a sleeper room at the hospital. For one more night, And after that we had nowhere to go. So we were on the waiting list at the Ronald McDonald house. But, um I had my two girls three hours away. I had a very sick child in the hospital and the closest hotel room that we could get was 35 minutes away. And, um It's just really hard when your daughter or a child is in the nick you you are not able to sleep there so we could visit at any time. But we weren't able to spend the night there. I remember getting that phone call. And just remember feeling released. I had heard about the running Donald house before. But prior to July, 25th I didn't think that I needed it..

"How How good of a team member were you in the house was your tone respectful? Where you kind to your siblings. You know, all of those kind of things. Sounds like you might be complicating this a little bit with the behavior bonus. Yeah, I feel like You should stick with one theme. And maybe instead of doing the behavior bonus, which they shouldn't get paid for being good. They should just be good. You're right. Yes, I think maybe do it with grades. At school. There you go. Okay. Okay. You know, like if they Do they get report cards? You're funny that you say that I just got an email this morning from my second grade second grader's teacher, and it was an update on grades that he got in. And I was like, Oh, I don't even know we're still doing great. Distance learning. You don't know if anything is real anymore. You're right. So true. Okay, so that's that's the way to do it. But I do like the concept of right and Sunday night in person paid a cold, hard cash going right to you. And you really get a connection of I did this work this week. And now look, I'm walking out with 10 bucks. Eight bucks. Five bucks. I'm walking here. That's gonna cost you what 100 and 32 bucks a month. Eyes. That word that comes out to I believe so. The 10 in the five Comes out to 33. Times definitely comes out to 23. Oh, you're right. It does. Okay, So you're saving a little bit of money, So we'll just say you're over 30 days, which is Sick, damn $190 as you do the math here. That sounds great. We have also told them that there will be other tasks that are just part of being a member of the family. But what's enabling for us is it allows us to start to really delegate and somewhat meaningful way to them so that we're gonna have them do it anyway, and now we can have them do it on a routine basis. And I don't like the concept of just an allowance without there being some level of responsibility tied to it early, so we call it commission paid a Sunday paydays. I like that. It's Sunday, starting the week off with your loot. Yeah, Girl. Yeah, girl, if you got some loot, by the way, um, you might want to help out the kids at the Ronald McDonald house and and the families in general because it's our 13th annual my talk. One of 71 Virtual Santa Project. Yeah, Of course. We had to go virtual this year, but we still want to do it and we need your help..

"With your best friend knew necklaces. Yeah, it's like it's like a duet on Tic tac like you get the one half and the other half and decorate it your own way. Yeah, I don't know. I would have to do that. If I put a treat my apartment. I don't have room for a whole one. I paid for that or made a donation couple years ago for the Ronald McDonald house, and we put a display in the in the basement of another base with the lobby of the one that Larry Ronald McDonald House and Tom Yeah. Tom Ki ho and And my friends over there. They did. They did that for for us, And they did the upside down one because I thought the kids were they thought the kids would like it. I can't take credit for the design. It was way over the top All light. Of course, Everything Ki ho does is like amazing and And that was cool because it was different, you know, for the kids or whatever. But I didn't. I didn't really get that one either. You know, in general, why you would put one upside down in your home. But I don't. I don't like the half one like, just get a tree or like normal or don't My God, that how about that's my heart? Take for the day. Get a tree like normal or don't scare you. I'm gonna have trees, right? Come on now, not just get a small tree, half tree paying full price. Still, though. Listen, it probably is probably more. You have to pay more because some guy had to cut it in half. But I don't even put Christmas decorations up anymore because you know, my family is not in Chicago's like travel for the holiday and So then I would want to putting it up and then taking it down before I go because I don't want to come back and dance like depressing January And then there's still a tree. It makes me sad and I love the holidays so much. I love Thanksgiving Christmas so much that if I came back like January 4th or something, and they were still a tree, there would make me feel empty and sad. You gotta leave it up until there's something to look forward to. Well, I know, I know this year is different. Yeah. I always look forward to march. I don't know why it was. I don't know who looks for the February, you know, birthing anywhere. That's the one thing sometimes from the focus of February Ground Hog Day s so many great holidays. Karada President's Day. Oh, my goodness. Yeah, I like that one because we get some days off. I like that one. E don't know. No, I don't know if anyone else feels this way this year. I know it's probably different for a lot of Plus, they didn't get to see all their family. But like there was this big like we had Thanksgiving and we have my birthday and like everybody was together. And then yesterday my my sister went home and her husband went home and I don't know it was like this huge ramp up to all this fun stuff and family and then Straight down. You know, it's like a big letdown. Emotional left town kind of, and I'm sure it was worse if you don't get to see your family and all, but I don't know If this happens, it happens for me after huge events like my sister's wedding was that way. It was like so exciting and all of our family and friends were there. I got to see everybody. We had this great time the next day. It's like Boop. It's over. You know, I don't know. It's kind of a big letdown that then Christmas is kind of the same way and so is all of winter. You gotta look at the silver lining. You know, there's always There's always an upside like you got to see them and you're supposed to cherish the moments that you're with them not think about the time that they leave. I have a hard time being present. I really do because I'm constantly I'm a guy who always have to have something to look forward to like. I'm always it's not next best if that's not what it is, but like I This is this is why this time of year is great because there's a lot to look forward to. You know lots and most of it involves family and friends. And you guys and gift giving and partying and, you know In whatever form and again like a lot of people are doing that stuff this year, but, um, typically, that's what it means. And then I don't know. You kinda have to invent stuff, but I guess I don't know. I tend to have a difficult time being present in the moment as opposed to being like, okay, this is cool, but But wins the next time we get to do this kind of thing. Maybe I need to work on that. I don't know. Do you meditate to do that? How do you become more present? Well, it is really good to have something to look forward to. I don't think that's bad. I think I think most people need that. And there's always something. You just have to dig a little bit deeper. But yeah, meditating is great. Are you? Are you good at meditating? No, I'm terrible and I have the calm. I have had to call Matt for two years and I still pay for it, hoping that one day I will actually use it and more religiously and drying focus, But I When I try and slow my mind now intends to just speed it up. Like even don't try to slow your mind down like that's that's your first problem you need. You just start little like a couple of minutes at your timer and allow those thoughts to come and then just see them through. You know, you're supposed to welcome them. Yeah. So don't try to say Stop thinking, you know, just welcome the thought and let it pass right by conveyor belt. I was told just kind of watch it go by. Interesting. Yeah. So just start slow. Set a timer. You could start even with, like, three minutes, five minutes and then start that every morning or whenever you have time. I mean, also, I mean, we can't really in Chicago but to be in nature or the ground with your feet, you know? On the earth That's really helped. I hug trees with Jason Brown did hug a tree. Yeah, it was grounding. I'm not gonna lie. Very Hazlitt, you guys You know, there's something about a big tree like a really big tree. It's kind of this kind of special. Yes. Say I'm my best self in the woods. Like I just wanted me e mean, if you don't get a big ash tree like 345 ft across whatever like a big ass tree like that tree's been there. So long trees seen a lot of stuff like year like dead. I mean, well, morning, decades or so much of years. You could talk to her. Who? Wow. If only we had some weed Right now. This conversation would be a whole lot better Monday, I heart radio song Battle and.
Chicago looters smash Ronald McDonald House with terrified sick kids inside
"How sick do you have to be to smash the windows? Of a Ronald McDonald house. Ronald McDonald. Houses are scattered around the country near Children's hospitals, typically or hospitals that serve Children there for surgeries for specialties in certain cities. And it allows the families to stay for free. In these areas when they can afford room and board if their kid is hospitalized at a hospital nearby. Thank you. Imagine that black lives matters protesters or anarchist or anti for whoever they smashing windows and I say black lives matter because we have this organizer that aerial, Atkins is encouraging theft and smashing and looting. So we know of at least one black lives matter. Organizer Just awful. And the reports from Chicago media that the families and in some cases some of the sick kids, actually not in the hospital, but there for treatment and staying in the Ronald McDonald house and maybe going to the hospital for daily. Outpatient treatment were in total fear. As this week, the looters they trashed and smashed the front door and windows trying to get inside the Ronald McDonald house. So if they got it, what the hell were they going to do to these innocent families and kids? Just disgusting. The Ronald McDonald House. This location in Washington are in Chicago. Rather this location. Chicago says that more than 30 families, including some sick Children with them. Were absolutely terrified as the looting and the ransacking happened earlier this week on Monday. They were very concerned. There was a lot of activity right in front of the house people making choices that could put them at risk and put our families at risk. So the staff was frightened. That's Lisa Mitchell, who's with Ronald McDonald House charities. Gave an interview to Wools Television, ABC seven in Chicago. I mean, how despicable And it turns out that the families and their Children they were this Ronald McDonald House in Chicago because it was close to the Lurie Children's Hospital. That's five blocks away so they could walk there easily easily get transportation there. And here you have the looters and the rioters smashing the Ronald McDonald house. I mean, that's just a Lo of lows, Charitable facility that helps family and sick Children. It's unbelievable. The windows and the front door had to be boarded up because there were destroyed. It's disgusting. So that's the Chicago story on what happened earlier this week.
Coins and Cash: Shortages, Hoardings, and Threats
"Walking money for the rest of us. This is a personal finance show on money how it works how to invest it, and how to live without worrying about it. I'm your host David Stein today's episode three, Zero Eight. It's titled Cash Coins. shortages. Forty and threats. Weeks ago, my daughter and I were at a bakery buying a couple of loaves of bread. We didn't have the exact change and they didn't have the coins to make chain. So they rounded down, we got a small discount. This week I was going through the McDonald's drive through, and there was a sign that said due to treasury shortage of coins, use credit or debit cards. Round up to the nearest dollar, donate the different to Ronald McDonald house charities or use exact change on cash transactions. There is a coin shortage in the US right now. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell told Congress last month. What happened is that with the partial closure of the economy, the flow of coins through the economy, it has gotten all. It's kind of stopped. We've been aware of it. We're working with the meant to increase supply while working with the reserve banks to get this apply to where it needs to be. The Agency of the US Treasury responsible for minting coins is the US. Meant it was established in seventeen ninety two by Congress when it passed the coinage Jack and it chose Philadelphia as the site of the I meant. Now, the US mint operates production facilities in Philadelphia, San, Francisco Denver, and West Point. Every two years, Congress requires US Treasury to give a report on the US mint its budget and its cost to produce its coins. In twenty twenty, the US meant projected that it would produce fourteen billion circulating coins. Including eight and a half billion pennies. One point, three, billion Nichols two point, four, billion times. One Point, eight, billion quarters. Now. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the US mint cut back production of circulating coins in March and April. Year to date through July, they had produced eight point, two, billion coins. They said, they were back up to full capacity by mid. June anticipate producing one point six, five, billion coins per month. That would equate eighteen point, one, billion coins. But here's the thing about circulating coins in the US and other countries. The meant only contributes a relatively small percentage of the new circulating coins each year twenty, nineteen, it was seventeen percent. New. Coins. Going into the supply chain? The remainder came from third party coin processors are recyclers as individuals by things they get back and there are machines where you can put your spare change and it will sort it and this recirculating process. Make sure there is a sufficient supply of coins that has broken down. A couple of weeks ago, meant issued a bulletin, which said, we ask that the American. Public start spending their coins, depositing them or exchanging them for currency at financial institutions or taking them to a coin reduction kiosk. The coin supply problem can be solved with each of us doing our part. This isn't the first time that there has been a coin shortage. There was one in the early nineteen sixties in the US.

"And you need to keep operating. And then, of course, any kind of financial gift is always appreciated. As as we never ask a family To pay for their stay at Ronald McDonald House, but most important, just like Tiffany, who's a great ambassador. When people get to know Ronald McDonald House. We want them to be an ambassador for us to bring awareness of what our organization does for so many families. And take our message back home, where they can share our message and allow future families to call Ron McDonald house their home. And we talk a lot on the show about the importance of volunteers and how everybody could do something right our our church in my Bible study group. You know, we go down and we serve a meal. You know you could go down. It's a beautiful home, go down, cook some lasagna or some other Neil that would serve. Many and go down and be a part of it and just see how your contribution makes a difference. I think seeing first hand is really powerful, so you can either do it individually or be part of a group. But volunteering is such a key piece to talk about that all the time. Everybody conduce something, even if it's a little something so Okay? And you talked about so many awesome things today. Can you share the contact information for people who want to get a hold of you or someone at the Ronald McDonald house? Absolutely. "Our resource is to every family that needs us, and my goal is to never have to turn a family away. And just like Tiffany had explained. The first time they tried to get in. They couldn't because we were full. And my goal is that around McDonald House never has to turn a family like Tiffany's away because we're full. Well, and I have no doubt that you'll be able to accomplish that goal again. The The support that you get from the community and from other organizations will hopefully allow you to accomplish that. And and again, as you said, you will never have to turn anybody away. You know, we can't end this interview without talking a little bit about what you and your team have been doing during the pandemic. Like every business, every organization. We have all been affected. And have all had to change operations over the last 13 weeks. We're really proud. I'm personally so proud of the board giving me support and our staff We were able to keep our Ronald McDonald house open. For families who had the most critical of patients who needed to stay at the hospital. And It was done because of the dedication of the staff. I mentioned that we have 550 volunteers to keep them say we asked that they refrain from coming in for their volunteer shifts until the immediate coalbed crisis was passed US. And we're slowly reintroducing them. But if you can imagine having to do the work that All of us. Plus our volunteers do in this New normal, which is I know we've heard that word are that term enough, But it was. It was definitely a different way to operate, but just to be able to still support our families with occasional meals with pantry items. Allowing them to stay here and be right across from the hospital where their child is being treated. Waas a something I will always be proud of that we were able to do Yeah, And I think it's important people understand that there are organizations that are still keeping their doors open during this situation, and so we're grateful and what? We were thankful that you are one of them. If people want to contribute to this house that love built How would they go about doing that? Visit our website..

"You know, From a financial standpoint, I understand that you're part of a global charity that helps in that regard. We are our global charity Ronald McDonald House Charities located in Chicago. They started about 45 years ago when the first Ronald McDonald House was built. In Philadelphia. And since then, the charity has expanded to include approximately 350 chapters throw the world So altogether. These chapters just last year alone served approximately eight million families. So when you think about that impact, it's our chapter combined with the 349 other chapters That are able to continue our mission and provide these families the services that we d'oh. And so you're saying there's about 350 Ronald McDonald houses across the United States and and the world really? There are so as a small charity. In part how we do what we do is because of the support we received from our global charity, but also the support we can receive from the other chapters throughout the world. There's no reason to invent a new wheel if we're looking for a new program or a new policy. Then we just have to reach out to our colleagues in the other chapters, and we're all a very much of a sharing organization. And that helps us not only do what we do every day now. It helps to think about how we can further expand our reach into the future. Well and speaking of the future. I mean, you guys were doing so many wonderful things. But what is the future look like for Ronald McDonald House? Our future will always be that constant of keeping families together and providing them a home a room. This community of support. But in the last few years we've been able to add a couple other programs, including our hospitality card program at the hospital, where any family that is there to support their child being served. And receive a bit of hospitality as our volunteers well, our cart around and offer beverages Next reading materials toys. And in addition to that, we are also a major funder of the Ascension ST Mary's miles of smiles program, which brings into the Milwaukee public schools. A dental clinic. And we've been involved with that for a few years, and we look for other ways that we can help not only Milwaukee, but families. In our entire larger community. Into the future. As I mentioned we are now considering an expansion as well as opening up a family room. So we are we are committed to providing The best service we can giving..

"Um The Ronald McDonald house provided so much more every day when my daughter went to school. My mom always said that she believed two hours early so the girls could stop and talk to the ladies in the front office. They would talk about what was happening and what was going on. Then, when they got home from school, they had to show him all the pictures and talk about everything that was happening and I just remember when we left the Ronald McDonald house. Ellen comes up to me, and she had tears in her eyes and she was mom. What are going? Who's going to give all the ladies the hugs every day? Mom, they're gonna miss them. You know that became part of their journey part of their story. When Mom was unable to be there they had Family. They're the art therapy program. Helping them hell. I remember one day when Lydia had coded and we did not think that she was goingto make it. And you know, you come through the doors and you can hardly stand and there was a volunteer there who would just embraced me and the art therapist. Marianne had som E and took me back. And she said here, just throw paint at this this blank canvas and just get it all out. And I remember such a release and something so small when I couldn't pull myself together that There. They were picking up the pieces. There's so many different things that they offer you know, I was thinking about. We laughed in July came home in December. All the clothes that they went through and all the things that they They did while they were there. That was their life, and I just I am so appreciative for everything that the Romans Donald House does because it's so much more than just a room. It's truly part of our family. And the way that they're referred. The house that love built surely speaks through your voice and your words, You know, there's so many different things that they do the supportive programs, the meal programs. They have a secret garden. They have pet therapy programs and the fact that they serve, you know. I guess that over 3000 families were close to that. You know, there's a lot of people that they're serving and we could go into those statistics. But I think to hear firsthand from someone who has experienced All that they have. The offer really tells a great story. So thank you, Tiffany for sharing that when we come back, we're actually going to learn about how this house that love built. Puts all the pieces together for the families that they serve. We'll be back after this commercial break. Wake up feeling like you just boxed 12 rounds. Some wake up, sweating with sore jaws, headaches and a lot of our patients complain a brain. I'm Dr Mother Candler, and these signs often joined with snoring or sleep apnea symptoms. And if this sounds like you, you may have been in a struggle last night between you and the serious disorder. Many people aren't willing to fight back. But the fact is, you can't go through these nightly struggles without ramifications that each night chip away at your life's expiration date..

"Healing gardens at the Ronald McDonald house currently a new feature Epstein's garden center on capitol all of those done by aquatica and life leave that even if you see features other places that are quite a car has had their hand in that as well because they not only do their own water features but they revamped those that have have failed or one hand I'm so the guys at Quantico nobody knows water features better than these guys beam the store we we touched on it a little bit in the first segment well you're going to see Angie my wife worked in there you're gonna see Sean Galloway or our longest employees than there is part of the families than there long time at the store I will let you know your it's oh my god he added funny yeah he's a great guy and and and Sean and Angie they're the ones that are that are going to help you out the store and I'm usually in back in the office somewhere on the road somewhere out in the backyard and working so but if you're coming to the store you're going to see some really nice pond fish greater Quantic plants for sale water lilies things like that and examples of our work you're gonna see all sorts of pictures and different pine products and if we don't have it at the store we can order it for you we do help to do it yourselfers we sell them the the products that we recommend and the stuff that's going to work we don't have anything at the store that you know that's not gonna work for you so we carry high end products it's a real nice idea center for yeah if you're thinking about a water feature the other thing that is acutely apparent when you walk into your store is that you use you touched on it but I want to touch on a little bit more the quality of the items will be if you're walking around in the big box stores and you see these tools and things like that that you can make a pond in your backyard you start putting together okay this is what it's going to take you know what I know what kind of people started digging a hole dropped their previous plastic thing on the ground and you know three years later they're swearing at it rather than by when you go in for Quantico you're gonna learn not only how to do this right but the the right materials there for Wisconsin winters all the expansion and contraction that takes place everything that you have to be concerned with with water features another thing that I love about what you guys do if you will sit down and explain how to do it you're going to learn how to do it if you want to do it yourself if you get in trouble you can always call up and say Hey I need some help out here any other thing I think that that the store offers is going to give you a really really definite viewpoint on whether or not this is something you want to take on your cell now do you wanna talk about this a thousand times on the show when you go on here and and listeners that are on the website is like stuck walk upon start time go to photo still blow your mind when you look at this I guarantee you a couple things are gonna happen one is you're going to say all my god I love it number two you're going to see I'd love to have won a number three you're going to call there's no way I can afford it and that's the problem that we we have to overcome because the water features are beautiful people think they're a rich man's sport they aren't this is very affordable for the average I'm gonna say the average homeowner in a residential situation can start with a water feature relatively inexpensively and you can always expand on it because you guys do the design you can save your face one if we never go any further it's going to be your call but if you want to go to phase two were ready to go all right I mean that's how this works well think about the lifestyle think about backyard living what does that mean and a lot of people that we deal with they say that this is one of the best investments that they ever made and the reason they say that is because it changes their their life their lifestyle it's not in there it's not like porting is well how can I put this is not like buying a TV or are remodeling kitchen cabinets or something it's it's actually interactive and it's rewarding in it it's just something that we every model well if it's if it's living is breathing it's you know it's something that you're going to interact with and enjoy in that way and and they are affordable it's something that is it's just going to really enhance your wife it bring joy to your your life in your backyard nothing against kitchen cabinets Nick but you know it's just it's a weird thing when you're added to a backyard and I don't know how to explain it but it it just becomes part of your kind of your your lifestyle and really people are blown away by by the enjoyment they get out of a a ponder a waterfall and they are affordable I mean you know if if you look at in this respect what we're going to create for you it's gonna last you fifteen twenty twenty five years of enjoyment where you could buy a car then if you're going to have the car for five or ten years maybe a year or less and a lot of time to carve a lot more expensive than you know that a water feature and you look at it like what's gonna bring me more enjoyment and and I I would argue a water feature a pond one of the things we talked about before we went on break I think it's important bring it up and you can see that well well documented on the website at aquatic plants dot com with the photos yes you're welcome Hey you know on that Sunday afternoon if you have people over it starts off with the sun with the birds with all of that as we come into the office please change the whole scene changes and if if they have the sunlight that's starting to come down you have to different birds that are coming around if you start with the dragon flies maybe leave now on other things coming and then in the evening you guys are absolute masters with the lighting and you back like this and it creates a gorgeous gorgeous scene I'm looking at the one that has the purple flowers it's got the the lily pads in it it's it's just gorgeous I'm looking at one here and it's it's really not I think you have two lights on the pond and it has this goal to work that creates this hero doesn't look in the backyard and that's what I was talking about before it may sound corny if you don't have one but one of my favorite time is in the evening one my water creatures going and it's back with and it's just gorgeous so you have all these different green he's taking place in your yard as you go through the day you know what you know thank you for putting up next to a doctor putting a bridge over them or interacting with them or the kids are leapfrogging from boulder to boulder you know over a pond or or they're trying to catch a frog or they're feeding the fish or you know you're reading the paper next to the pond or you know or you create this environment where you actually have pets at your your fish become pets and you're you're looking forward to coming home to feed on and enjoy enjoy your cornea in your pond fish and then you know with the swim ponds we do you know where you can dangle your feet in the water or you know things like that I mean they're so interactive and you got a look at that and there is a ton of value there is far as your your "The Ronald McDonald house try to make a make a nice Christmas for them that's where it's at under I difficult circumstances you had a fun fact you want me to give you something interesting that's unrelated to that in a related to the tips that I'm about to give you for wintry weather driving but sort of sort of intriguing was it all mean you're a numbers lady ever since my wife it into a tooth in the Turkey and then my son was born with a pre emergent tooth now you think teeth being something of my life we talk about this often times my contracts have been up in December so December has often been a month of transition for me sure okay but get this we started building a house months ago and it takes months and then there's some things were things speed up and then there will be other things that cause delays yada yada yada there was a point where we were hoping maybe if every little lasting went right we could be in October as it turns out the situation unfolds as it does we move in on December ninth and I said to my wife so familiar day let me do a little digging come to find out six years ago exactly to the day is when we moved into our current home you're kidding six years eggs number nine twenty thirteen to December ninth you've only been here that long yeah well decoding is it a compliment or it is I guess I didn't realize you've only been here for six years I can't believe it's been six make quite the impact in your short time here thanks Donna you're welcome let's get tipsy now time for shop.

"Knew of Ronald McDonald house is being in that'll do you feel confident right next to the church Hey Chris children's hospital used to be right across the street asking for yeah that was the first in the area it was it was a second the world too is that right the first was in for the Philadelphia socially Chicago that launched in kind of really the movement hello to throw in everything how many are here now if I run a town houses here in the Chicago land area okay and how does that compare with other metro areas that were one of the largest second third largest in in the world and then there also because there's one right behind us isn't there is again new children's hospital absolutely and then you have played the rooms as well explain that form yeah so you know the house I'm really in your backyard here is soon to be seventy bedrooms running four bedrooms that that will open in a couple of weeks but it's a big house in so everything that we do your I do on our own home we do in our Amazon also has completely all the same enemy all the same amount I met a man yeah this get someone in to be seen as yet. so you know we're just trying to keep parents closer sick kid I guess we should start with that I mean I didn't really explain your mission but a tell us what it is that that that you do and why some poor yeah well you know we believe that when a child is sick family sick and so our mission is really to keep kids and families close together and help them get better together and so we partner with our pediatric hospitals in the Chicago land area to make sure that those critically ill kids can have their families close and so you know whether you live and Naperville or you know in an area that is too hard to kind of get back and forth right just to be bad cider beer child you can stand around the topics the health care system in a way absolutely I mean that the children but I would imagine their recovery benefits by having family nearby that's right so you know if we can help families be nourished and taking care of and have a good night's rest then that they can go back you know and and re can I mean redo their cycle the next day I'm being other Ptolemy and they're part of a medical decision the treatment team how far away is the typical gassed I mean photo. your average is probably four to six hours right so we serve families from all over the world last year we had families from forty five different states but the you know here in Chicago here in Chicago we're primarily serving Indiana and Illinois so I would say about fifty to sixty percent of families using around a townhouse in the Chicago land area are from those those two states and so what's the new you have a mole I didn't know you had sort of a mobile office we have a moral system explain that for me yeah we have a great partnership with advocate children's hospital and we do mobile medical outreach to children to get them access to care in underserved areas so our primary partners are with schools and trying to make sure that we help them stay in school so a lot of early detection screening immunizations and we do a lot of dealing with what I would call food in securities so we'll we'll see about addiction find if what it what is it for maybe lack food nutrition at home okay he's just getting him some basic port so we have a backpack program that when you get on the caramel bill and the social worker the nurse at the school was identified that perhaps there is a food challenge at home and getting access we make sure we select this and I can hold the back into how many kids are affected by that every year this year will probably reach about six thousand kids while so it's a great partnership that we do and you were part of that health care continuum of making sure that those kids get scene and and find a health for home quite frankly so also the one issue but there was trouble last year or earlier this year down at the university of Chicago hospital right to the facility there I had a devastating flood where are you with that we are scheduled to open October first night it's been a long haul it's been close since February and we were of part of the victim of the polar vortex and experienced some extreme weather conditions with our pipes and our sprinkler system that really did destroy the inside of the house and it was fast and so about a two and a half million dollar loss and the community really rallied around us and we are so grateful for that so that's gonna open up soon and open for twenty two families will welcome back we have band at putting in a hotel since February the you know we talk here about taxes and Ted Textor nations in a I'm interested in charities whether they've seen a drop off in their donations with the new tax laws there's less incentive tax wise to donate yeah have you noticed anything like that yeah I think we're still a little bit on the learning curve I think this was the first year that people really realized what was happening with their own tax situation and so you know I think that we ended up maintaining who I would say is our loyal of donors and it may we have let me some limitations now on you know what would be new donors try some people getting interested because I think that as people are affected based on the circumstances they are staying committed to maybe what their core charities are but maybe the room for growth and supporting others become are limited yeah I think that will look I'll just say for myself because I'm a Scrooge advisedly but. this sort of peripheral donations art is attractive to me as they would have been if I had to text a nation my core when certainly are absolutely but the ones walking on the street I must might be a little less likely that's going to be a challenge for people like you to excite us into warmer heart a little bit yeah I I think listen as as things change like this you know we all in jest and we're just working hard to make sure that we're reintroducing mission to this our mission to folks who may not know about us which is this conversation today is helpful kids are going to get sick and families need your support and so we don't have the luxury of sitting back and not being aggressive at finding donors and getting them to continue to give I knew that you welcome families I didn't know you went to the schools and help kids there that's that's outstanding yeah the thanks very much for coming in how the book and all this is C. E. O. Ronald McDonald house it's nice to meet you thank you so much for having me it's the wind trust business lunch on seven twenty WGN. start the timer because he's the one trust business minute sharing in examining Chicago business news of the day and if you take a look to your left right over the little thing we call the Michigan you'll see Detroit the auto capital still seeing some push back from the United auto workers union this week as they enter.

I mean in hearing we heard from our colleague Tim who had to use the services of Ronald McDonald house when his child got sick. And just hearing the the real life stories. Look we hear of every year. But it really does put it in perspective of all the little things that you don't think about when your child sick. And you have to basically as the parent live at that hospital. Whatever the hospital, maybe you forget about all of the little, especially if you have other kids all of life's think of all the things you do in a day. You got to take a shower you perhaps need a nap all of those little things don't we take for granted or automatically do or have the resources to do. These parents that are taking care of their kids. They don't where are they going to nap? Where is where is this little sister? Gonna nap. Well there in hospital. It's all of that stuff.
