"Nice. Tom Cruise. Now streaming on paramount plus. All right, so let's look ahead to the next two nights. Monday, we've got Rutgers at number one Purdue, boulder makers trying to remain undefeated just like New Mexico. West Virginia at Oklahoma state is also on Monday night. Then Tuesday, pretty good schedule. Mississippi state at Tennessee, LSU at Kentucky, Kansas at Texas tech Kansas state of Texas, Virginia at Pitt. What are you looking to most forward to there? Did you not mention? First of all, you fly tomorrow. By tomorrow in studio, Tuesday night Wednesday night. Okay, so I'm gonna start with one. Unless I missed it here, you did not mention the undefeated New Mexico lobos at Fred's president. 11 eastern this is your late one on Tuesday. CBS Sports Network GP will be in studio, tune in, watch the game see if New Mexico can keep pace with, well, we'll see. If Purdue is going to remain undefeated, because it's at home Monday. By the way, let's see how good your memory is here. Pre season episode. We asked ourselves, would there be an undefeated team on January one? I have the answer. Do you remember if you said yes or no? I hope I said yes. You said yes and I said yes. Do you remember your team? We picked our most likely candidates. Do you remember the team you thought you said would be mostly? I think that's a Houston. You did say Houston. It didn't make it. I said to you. I tried no. Give them credit for trying. But for the second half against Alabama, they did not try in the second half of gazelle. That's true. To my point, we only got two stand in here. We're on one one 20 three and it's just Purdue, home against Rutgers. If memory serves, it was at Rutgers last season. Back when it was 2021 when Purdue got knocked and took its first L Ron Harper junior, right? From 40 feet, I think he hit the shot. So Rutgers is going. I do remember Rutgers ending somebody's undefeated season. And I think it was Harper who hit who hit the buzzer beater that I remember that. Because there was that famous called the train is off the tracks. Oh, the train is off the tracks. That was actually that was well before you wanted to become an engineer. And then you realize you met conductor and it was Illinois. The train is off the tracks that was a thing season ago I completely. I'm glad you said that. Okay, 'cause coincidentally, I got an email today from Ryan holt. Shouts to Ryan holt. I'm just going to read you the email as it was sent to me. Gary longtime listener and absolutely love the on college basketball podcast. I hope Ryan don't mind me sharing this. If you do run email me again and say hey GP, that was at a line. But I hope it's fun. Longtime listener and absolutely love that on college basketball podcast was listening to the mailbag episode on my run today and happened to run by the placard for the great national train wreck while you were talking about it. I thought you might like to see some pigs of it below. He sent me pictures of it. I'm going to tweet that out. Are you tweeted out? Were you concerned from the official project Twitter account? Yeah, no, I've got right where the disaster on the train tracks in Nashville happened back in 1918. This man was listening to me talk about it. The most random thing you could ever talk about on a college basketball podcast, other than maybe premarital sex. And he's like, wow, I'm running class this place right now. What in the world? That'd be like, it'd be like, you run in your own jog and we're talking about Elvis and UMass law and graceland, then you're just running by graceland. Although I wouldn't advise running by graceland. How about that though? We need a new placard for you destroying Illinois. That needs to go next to that. So ask Ryan if you can build something, I assume he's local, build something, just put it there. Don't ask, don't look for the ordinance, don't go to city hall, do it yourself. DOI, any kind of memorial to the Illinois 22, 23 season that was that was all GP's doing. If you could actually do that, I'm not kidding. We will publicize such matters. Make a fake sign and put it next to that sign and let's call that the spot where the two biggest train disasters in the United States history happen. First, the disaster in Nashville that lost a whole bunch of lives is actually a pretty big deal. And then, of course, when I ran the online I train clear off the tracks. Any who? So yeah, New Mexico, that Fresno state, 11 eastern, that's a night game, not a morning's game. All that means is I've got all that means I'm gonna be at work to one 30 in the morning. Sports Network and we're gonna do a, we're gonna do a Wednesday 9 a.m. podcast. You love it. Just kidding, Jeff. Wouldn't do that to you. Also, Mark had at St. John's 6 30 eastern FS1 on Tuesday, St. John's got run 22 points against Eaton hall on Saturday. Johnny's the St. John's fans listening, I see you, I hear you. You're like, not again. Please, not again. They had a terrible non conference schedule in terms of who they assembled, racked up the wins, and now they're looking like frauds. We'll see if they can change that in conference play. To the other games that you mentioned,

"Grab by Notre-Dame The Irish with the ball up by one and a foul committed in the backcourt by Rutgers Marque he slapping prentiss hub on the arm I didn't quite understand why he fouled in that possession That was not needed Especially in a double bonus situation The 72% free throw shooter will head to the line to shoot two Another name only 50% as a team from the line in this game 7 for 14 For the one point lead 40.9 left in the second overtime and the free throw is a perfect swish for printers up Most people don't understand that this is a sign of toughness when you can hit your free throws when you're tired when the game is on the line Prince's hub got the first trying to give Notre-Dame a three point lead in the second overtime 40.9 seconds left His second free throw is good And the Irish has an 87 84 lead Notre-Dame will call a timeout 40.9 seconds left in the second overtime The Irish on top by three Don't be surprised to see Rutgers taken NBA approach to this opportunity because of the shot clock difference Maybe get downhill try to get a two point quickly come back and defend without fouls Chan ordon Steven bardo delighted to have you with us from UD arena here in Dayton Ohio Notre-Dame trying to survive a double overtime game against Rutgers the Irish on top 87 84 Neither team has led by more than three points since the 5 minute mark of the second half This has been a nail biter Yeah it's been an incredibly competitive game that both teams just there's a punch thrown in it as a counter punch throwing it Guys are just doing a fantastic job of getting to their spots and getting the ball to the players that can have some success in this spot Both teams shooting better than 50% from the floor Well Notre-Dame better than 50% at 51 Rutgers right at 50% Notar game with 56 points in the pace Thanks to all of the layoffs that we've mentioned I mean it's been amazing to see Notre-Dame get 24 layers against what's considered a pretty good Rutgers defensive team Click for more one of the better shot blockers in the big team conference has really been nullified defensively here by the Irish Rutgers will inbound in the backcourt McConnell will be the trigger man looking to get it into Paul mulcahy He does Notre-Dame backs up defensively and MK he dribbles past the timeline with 35 seconds left Notre-Dame up 87 84 Here's baker near the top of the circle 18 left to shoot Crossover dribble good defense by Ryan Baker hands it backward for Harper Long range three He hits it Hallway mackerel to tie the game at 87 Boy the Rucker's biz one of the foul on the release Notre-Dame can play for the final shot 17 seconds left in double overtime Tied up at 87 After that three point shot from two steps behind the line by Ron Harper junior Wesley the freshman 7 seconds left driving to the right hand toward the basket He's under the hoop His shot block offensive rebound Atkinson scores 1.4 seconds left Baker does not get off a shot Notre-Dame is headed to San Diego As Atkinson's put back with less than two seconds to go in double overtime gives nother name an 89 two 87 win What a game Great job Notre-Dame continuing to pound the paint the 25th layup of the game is of being the game winner For the iris wonderful job of execution down the stretch You feel bad for Rutgers they battled But you tip your hat to the fighting iron Great job finishing this game in double overtime What a performance by Paul Atkinson junior He made 13 out of 15 shots 26 points and 6 rebound Oh he was fantastic Got the party started early with 8 quick points and really established the Irish all night long attacking the paint getting to the rim at will The dejection evident on the Rutgers players Kayla McConnell hears to be in tears for teammate Ron Harper junior throws his arm around McConnell's shoulders Notre-Dame on its way To a matchup against 6th seeded Alabama After a thrilling double overtime victory over Rutgers we are joined now by the guy who scored the game winning basket on a put back with less than two seconds to go Paul Atkinson Paul take us through that final segment Your teammate break Wesley driving toward the goal and you were there for the putback You know if it wasn't gonna be Blake making that someone had to come fall off I just wanted to get the rebound Put up a good finish and went in there and it was a battle You know it's off to double overtime against a great team But we wanted to we really wanted that Paul let me ask you something You guys seem to live at the rim Did you know it was gonna be that easy getting to the rim all night long Did you see something in scouting that allowed you to do that No not really honestly you know I had a lot to make up for You know I've had a really poor show in the.

"Are you going to be able to get some sleep tonight? I'm not sleeping at all, man. I'm like, I'm tossing and turning. I wake up at 2 o'clock in the morning. I look at my bracket. Is it USC? Is it Miami? Is it Boise state or is it Memphis? Right. Yeah, like I'm on three hours right now, Joe. I'm gonna have bags under my eyes on daily wager. Don't make fun of me. No, no, never, not you. I have a buddy once where I asked him about his brackets because we were going over brackets and he's a degenerate like I am. And I said, who do you have winning this thing? And he looks at me, he goes, truth be told, it doesn't even matter. What this bracket pays the winner, I'm gonna lose it in juice on this first wave of games. So it doesn't even matter to me. And I remember thinking how true that is. I love filling the things out. I'm totally into them, but the gambling is where it is for me and it's where it is for where we start right here. We got two games tonight for the play in, Notre-Dame Lang one, total of one 34 against Rutgers. What are you thinking here? Yeah, I love Rutgers and little full transparency. Ron Harper senior is a very dear friend of mine. I play golf with him every Wednesday afternoon. So I am rooting for him and his son. Keep in mind, very interesting note here. You know, Ron's from Dayton in this game is being played in Dayton and they're going to have a lot of friends and a lot of family in attendance and I think harp son is going to go off. I love Rutgers. I think they're the better team. They've got the better defense. They've beaten Wisconsin in Indiana on the road already this season. I like the Big Ten. They're stronger than the ACC. So give me Rutgers. I'm all over Rutgers tonight, Joe. I think all of daily wagers gonna be on Rutgers. I'm on Rutgers as well. We always point out how well they play at the rack. A home wins over Illinois, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan state Purdue, Michigan, like the list goes on and on. But they've also won some big road games. They did go to Wisconsin and win. They did go to Indiana and win. They're a battle tested squad. Notre-Dame in the eyes of many should not be here. All right, the resume is not that impressive. They didn't really beat anyone down the stretch. So I'm going to be on Rutgers with you. I'm also looking to the over at one 34 and a half. People will look at the pace and the defense and they'll say that the bet might be crazy, but what each team wants to do is a weakness for the other team. For example, Notre-Dame wants to bomb the three. Rutgers doesn't defend the three all that well. Rutgers wants to get to the rim, Notre-Dame doesn't defend the rim very well. So the offense should have their day. I'm going to play the over one 34 and a half and I'm with you on Rutgers. The other game tonight right state is laying three total of one 55 against Bryant. Is there anything here that caught your eye?.

"I was so jealous because not jealous, but like, dude, I watched him do that. I'm like, man, that's the best feeling in the world right there. He is shut up this entire building. And he just made a shot that is so freaking massive for their team. That was, but you know what I will say about that job? Gio baker had the ball. And I'm watching him come up and Ron Harper's demanding it. And Gio gives enough to him, which props to Gio baker for being like, all right, Ron wants it. It's on him. He's taking his home before. And he's just waving a moral. Don't want the ball screen. I got race Thompson. And I'm pulling. And I think that that is the coolest shit. I mean, you get goosebumps from seeing a type of environment. That place is rocking and rolling. He just, it was a big time play. Big time play. What's your biggest celebration you've ever done? Have you ever done anything close to the world? Well, you know, I was just like the raw emotion guy. Like that was choreographed. Big balls take a bow. I'm not saying he was thinking about doing that, but I was always just like Jordan fish pumps and out of control fist pumps and like I didn't like have said things..

"Williams with 7, one on one with amori gets inside, puts it up and in with 3.4 to go. Get it to Harper with three with two with one Harper for the win. Got it. Let's go. Game winner at the buzzer. And Rutgers upsets number one. 70 to 60. First time in program history that they are beating the number one team. But they're going to check the tape. Score the basket. Ball game. Let's go. And the students. I want to found that one last night, but I definitely didn't, because the lead goes are phenomenal. Shout out to shout out to Robbie hummel for not like dropping an F bomb as his Alma mater. Loses number one in the country and all likelihood, you know, when they just got there for the first time in program history he held it together pretty well. And fun fact about that moment as well, Matt, as you know, and a lot of these situations, I don't know what kind of cable you have. But I stream via fubo. And so sometimes a solid 45 seconds behind what's actually happening on the court. So in a situation like that, where I know we might need a quick story, I've got stat broadcast pulled up, which is very much live or close to it. And so Ron Harper, I've got his fadeaway go ahead jumper like a solid 30 plus seconds before it actually happens on my screen. So I'm working that into a little document on the side so I can make note of it in the article if we have to write one. Well, I keep looking at stat broadcast in the final 5 seconds. And I'm like, oh, they must have called a timeout, like nothing. It's not showing me the game is over. I look back to my screen. And the play is actually unfolding. And so in that way, I was glad it lagged out because I got to enjoy it live rather than have it having it shown to me on the live stats. I hear you a 100%. And when you live that streaming life, when I watch games up here in my office, I've got two, we can't see exhaustion, but I've got two TVs here, and I've got an iPad, but when you stream, you got that lag. So I actually don't have Twitter up often when I'm doing that because I don't want it spoiled with this last night. There really only two games worth watching, so I was able to watch that live. And in real time, we have a third play by play call. Jake Schmidt, Jake smead, I believe, your moment of glory has arrived. This is student radio wr SU. And my man drops, he drops a call here that is going into my audio bank immediately. This is Jake Schmidt. Rutgers students last night. Let's give it a listen..

"What did we think the tests are him ever actually winning a championship at perdue? We kind of dismissed it out of hand and I'm gonna walk that back. So and I got perdue. So I'll have the boilermakers winning the national championship. This season in college basketball yeah, I actually remember that conversation because I'm like, listen, you told me mat painter was gonna be the coach at Kentucky for ten years. I'd tell you Matt. But I'm just not sure he'll ever have the roster at Purdue to actually do it. And then somebody presumably a Purdue fan tweeted at me and was like, are you sure he doesn't have the roster this season? And I was like, that's a good point. He might. Right. That is very much the case. I mean, 'cause what does it usually take? It usually takes it's some experience. And some level of NBA talent. Usually, yes. And he's got that. And to speak the obvious, like, the genuine coaching acumen, very rare, will you see a coach win a national championship where if you talk to other coaches worth their salt, they'll be like, I don't know. It's happened, but it is not, it is not that common. All right, what else we got tournament prediction wise here for this season? So look at some possible sleepers. Like what team did I not put in the preseason top 25 and one team that's not in your top 26, you'll one to three 50 a what team could you envision winning two games in the NCAA tournament, making and see, that's not even the right way to phrase it. Because what if they went to first four games? I know, I know, I know. I thought about this, I know. What team, not in the top 26, could you envision making the sweet 16? Okay, so my first team that I went because I didn't want to go to the 27th or 20th team or 2019. So the first thing I thought was Arizona, but I thought they're too close to my. They're like in my top 30. I wanted to pick someone a little bit different. And then I was like, oh, I got it. I think you concrete. No, you doesn't count, 'cause you've got Yukon. You like the huskies there. So I did not count UConn, so I was like, all right, let me get a little bit further down, and the team I went with is actually from a metric standpoint is like a genuine sleeper long shot. I'm going Rutgers. Preseason projected to be the tenth team in the standings in both torvik and Ken Pam. Number ten out of 14 Big Ten teams are 59th in torvik GP. So I will go Rutgers here. I got him 39 in my list, but with the return of Ron Harper, junior, who I know you love geo baker, who is like, if you can be just a little more consistent and then I think cliff omaru is going to have a phenomenal year as a big for Rutgers. I think he will be one of the most improved players in the conference. They almost made it last season. Remember, they had that game in hand. I guess would you have been in. Would you have been in studio for the first weekend last year were you at home when all that stuff was going on? Because that was like a very frenetic, crazy moment when Rutgers had the game of hand against Houston, they blew it. Where were you? Do you remember? New York, I believe I was in. I was in studio for the entire NCAA tournament before going to Indy for the final four. I was basically lived there for like hours. It's not coming back. John rothstein was in the bubble. He was, that's right. And that meant I had no days off. It was awesome, but I worked basically every day in studio in sibling. That's right. That's why I thought it was. I just couldn't remember for certain there. But when that game was happening and Rutgers had it. And it was a classic, like Houston, it speaks to Samson in that program, they have a way of pulling out like if it's a tight game with two two and a half to go. If you're not buttoned up, they're gonna steal it from you. They just are gonna do that. And they did it against Rutgers. So the point is big time season for Rutgers last season. We were great to see them make the tournament because they were good enough the year before. There was no tournament the year before. And so this is the standard world Rutgers is that right now is pie col has that program in its fan base, even though it's projected to be tenth in both tourville and Ken palm and tenth in the Big Ten is not going to get you the tournament. I don't think it will. 9, maybe you got a chance. Ten is that's a tough sell. Now that's impossible, but I think they'll overperform that, get back to the tournament. And again, this is the long shot. I'm not saying it's over. It's overly likely. I like 35 other teams that had a Rutgers this season, but if you're asking me to pick a potential dark horse, just give me a team that's well coached and has two really good players that decided to come back, play for that program. I've been to the tournament Rutgers is my pick. I went with a team that we talked about recently because this question was sort of phrased just slightly differently. It was like what unranked team could end up in the top ten at some point this season and my answer was for June the tech. And so I would circle back to Virginia tech on this one. You know, they get 5 of the top 6 scores back from a team that made the NCA tournament. Cave luma, I don't think is a household name. I'm not sure any college basketball player that will make it, but, you know, we're not talking about Aaron Rodgers here. But he's a really good college basketball player who was fabulous last season. And if Virginia tech exceeds expectations and is, you know, a top 20 team for a chunk of this season is going to be hard to avoid him because he's a statistical monster. Lead for gentec in points, rebounds, blocks per game. So they bring back 5 of the top 6 scores from that team that went to the tournament. And then they add storm Murphy, who's a transfer from wafford. The average 17.8 points. And who knows how that will translate to the ACC? I had a buddy who did some research on this one time, like compiled the data. And basically, I don't want to misquote the data. But. The way I remember it was when you transfer up your production gets cut significantly, maybe like almost in half. So I don't think storm Murphy's going to average 17.8 points per game. But the more interesting thing that he did at wofford is last season, he made 40% of his threes and he took 7.3 per game. That translates. That's just shooting. And I don't think he's going to take 7.3 per game, although he can make 40% of him I'd let him. But he's shooting to a team that returns a.

"Ron Harper out front will be guarded by Molly Call gives a ball over. Not a geo Baker Baker trying to shake all can nice switch on the M s. Your defense is step back. Jump shot is good. That was a tough shot. Yeah, Rutgers inverted the ball screen there, set a guard big screen for a big in order to create the switch. They got the switch that they wanted, but but not good for Michigan status deal. Baker knocks down the shot. That's his 1st 4th point of the game. 18 seconds ago. Hold guard is just killing some time before I met, you gets into its play trailing 26 20. Now we're done in 10 seconds for the ball. Aaron Henry Henry, a three air ball in the league called tries to save it. It's gonna be a chocolate violation, so it stays 26 20. Lankford's gonna come off the bench now for time is one Michigan state. Damn best. You right now Down six began this game down. 15 nothing. So Michigan State has two fouls to give. There's 3.1 seconds left on the game clock here really difficult. T use one of those files to give it to such a short period of time, But the Spartans have it if they need it. And my shoes extending the defense. Henry Rocket Watts have extended it. Ball gives them the Johnson now goes over there, too. Young Little South Col tries a three and it's off the rim. He had a lot, but it doesn't go and we've come to a half time break its Rutgers 26. I miss you battled back. Spartans now have 20. And it is time for our halftime interview Presented by the above all for and so let's see when get everybody into position. Here are Test is gonna be my garland taking away, Kevin. So, Coach Garland. Definitely a rough start down 15 nothing but you did a really good job of battling back and I thought that the offensive rebounds 13 2nd Chance points were certainly the key, right? No doubt about it, K p And, you know, way started to gain my We're just way went into 11 moment with one pass, and everyone was trying to be a hero. I guess that's part of sitting out so long without playing a game. But you know, we did. You know, our defense held us in there. You know, in our defense and our rebounding. I thought market being had a great half. Did a lot of things to bring energy to our team and help help. Get us going. Yes. So you brought up that defense. Rutgers missed eight of their last 10 shots certainly went cold scoring only 11 points over the last 12 or so minutes. What? What were the keys defensively and well, well, we were We were really pushing up in full on way took away their dribble pen. Penetration. You know they were telling us with that at first, but a lot of that was due to our turnovers and they were scoring, You know, turnovers for touchdowns, and when you do that, you don't just go defense for that, you know, turn the ball over up top. You know, it's a free run at the basket and nothing you can really do. But once we stopped turning the ball over and we start moving in a little bit, and we got on the glass and start playing with a little bit of toughness, we were able to warm up. Able to mount a comeback. Sounds good. Well, thanks, Mike. For the For the time will will send it back to you. All right, So there you go. Some of the thoughts of assistant coach My Garland summed it up pretty well as he always does. Don't forget Preston. Honesty isn't the best policy at the Blue law firm. "Haven't really seen a ton of showcase matchups yet where we've gotten great prospect against prospect or when we have it's been situations like duke michigan state where both of those teams look like. They're kind of a mess right now. If we're going to be honest about it We've gotten a lot of showcase games with kentucky and kentucky is kind of a mess right now so it's hard to evaluate a lot of these players within the construct of where they are right now. So i'm excited to jump back in here starting on january fourth. I think it is as my first day back new january third and like just see what what's out there like what i can even find because it just feels like there hasn't been a lot of even really great evaluation settings since you know tournaments like maui and These little showcase games that happened throughout the course of the season. The schedule things. Because when you talk to college coaches so many of 'em treat it like an art form under normal circumstances and who can we play and where and what the. Rpi what will this now.
