"With a police investigation right here in Seattle. This case was brought that person that I think is now serving time for this. But he testified on behalf of a friend, he, again, George Sanders had apparently nothing to do with the skimming operation just testifying to his friends background and whether he thought he would do something like this. He was asked, so who do you work for? He said, Goldman Sachs and they said, do you work for Goldman Sachs? He goes, yep. Now all of this was under oath. And it turns out, of course, that he did not work for Goldman Sachs. George said it was admitted publicly that he hasn't done that, but of course you can lie in public and you're not going to go to jail for that. But you lie under oath, they can get you for perjury and you could go to jail. So that's yet another problem that George Santos has on his plate that he has to deal with amongst other accusations and now of course a House ethics committee investigation. In fact, George Sanders has only been in office for two months, he now has an entire ethics subcommittee formed just to investigate all the claims against it. You know, Andy periodically, we hear from George Santos about these investigations and these allegations against him as he said anything new of late? Well, he is confirmed that the ethics committee is indeed investigating. And he said he has not been interviewed by the committee yet. And that's pretty much all he's saying. He certainly has given a number of interviews over the last month or so, basically admitting that he didn't tell the truth about almost anything what it can do is background. But none of that's criminal. Well, this House ethics committee may see some things that rise to the level that they could actually vote him out of office to basically throw him out of Congress. They're investigating giving break any laws during the 2022 campaign. Did he disclose all the required information by law that he was supposed to to the house to be violated conflict of interest laws or did he engage this is something I hadn't heard of until recently in the engage in sensual misconduct was a staffer who was trying to get a job in his office. These are all things that just happened in the last couple of months while he was in office when he got sworn in in January. So he's got a whole laundry list of investigations and issues and ahead of him here. Not being particularly productive a few months for George Santos, other than creating a lot of controversy. In fact, if I remember right, he's not even sitting on any committees at this point, is he? Well, he, according to the House speaker McCarthy, he says that George Sanders has voluntarily withdrawn from committees. He wasn't kicked off. "Time, three O 5. Federal agents have spent the last couple of days taking down dozens of suspects connected with a nationwide drug ring, what has ties to Seattle. Northwest news radio's John lobert has the details. 90 men and women were picked up and raids from Phoenix to Pittsburgh and Seattle, U.S. attorney Nick Brown. Nationwide over 673 pounds of fentanyl pills have been seized in the last ten months, including nearly 60 pounds from one apartment here in Seattle. Fentanyl that's more potent and more deadly. DEA agent Jake galvin with a siege of the 27 kilograms of fentanyl pills in a CL apartment here, we potentially saved a 162,000 lives. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash was seized along with illegally modified automatic weapons, and the drug kingpin Bryce Benji hill was arrested in Seattle, special agent Robert hammer. Since the day that he has arrived, U.S. attorney Nick Brown, they have made a cognizant effort to send a message to the fentanyl traffickers in this district that they will be prosecuted. Agents say the drugs are coming from the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico, through Arizona, with ties to China, John libertini, northwest news radio, a state economist says the Seattle area has yet to really feel the effects of tech industry layoffs in part because many laid off workers are still getting paid and explanation now from northwest news radio's corwin Hague. Tech companies with local offices began announcing layoffs in November, with more cuts announced in the new year, but doctor Stephen lurch, chief economist with the state economic and revenue forecast council, says state employment data does not yet reflect those layoffs. According to sound transit and environmental impact statement shows the need to consider more station and route options in south Federal Way, as well as whether to move a proposed station on a flood plain in fife. And in terms of mitigating that, proved more difficult than imagined. So we need to study some additional station options in 5. David Jackson with sound transit says dealing with the floodplain issues and potential cultural sensitivity issues with another proposed site will delay the line. The opening of the project to Tacoma dome until 2035. If you go the one route and you can't have Jack Eichel in your lineup until Whether it's February or March or whatever timetable it is. You're right. It doesn't make a lot of sense. And especially since you mean you want to know how how it's going to turn out. So yes, does it Does it bleed into next offseason? I mean, certainly that's that's not a great scenario for the Sabres. Certainly not a great scenario for Jack Eichel, who you know, miss half of last season with the injury, So it's a lot of this is unpalatable on many levels and for all the parties involved, But I don't disagree at all that this is You know, may not be something that gets resolved between now and October 12th minute season starts or early in the season. You're right. It could last months and months, which Wow gives us lots to talk about, but not great for fans of the team. That's for sure. He's got when hockey returns and we have another season. Are we as the league returning to the pre pandemic divisional setup and playoff format And if so, you're happy with that? You're not happy with that. What are your thoughts? Yeah, No, I I, but it will go back to to what we knew before. Of course, What will be new this year is the addition of the 30 seconds the NHL team in Seattle and so fascinated to see how the Seattle crack and, um perform especially, you know, the bar has been set incredibly high. When you think about the years 17 18 Vegas Golden Knights and charging from expansion team to establish Cup final and almost unheard of, uh, possibility, and in such a great story for the game, and certainly for for fans in Vegas. I'm not sure that Seattle can replicate that. And Ron Francis GM there has has gone about things in ways that's different than what George McPhee did in Vegas in starting in 27 2017 with the expansion draft and their first off season, so I am curious as he playing in the Pacific Division. That's another change. We go back to the normal before. Divisional set up with the West Conference in the East Conference. And with Arizona moving to the central Division. Um not a great move for them, necessarily given the you know the uncertainty surrounding their future in Arizona and where they're at as a team and in terms of another rebuild. Um, but Seattle will play in the Pacific Division. I think they have a legitimate chance to be a playoff team. That division is is a charitably. We can say its in transition. But there's just there are a lot of teams that aren't you know, sort of armed far along the evolutionary curves. So I think Seattle has a really good chance given their goaltending and and the way they are built. I think they have a legitimate chance to be a playoff team and certainly be playing meaningful games into February and March. Scott before I let you go If you go back through the offseason, who is there a team or maybe a two or three teams that you thought really had a tremendous offseason draft free agency trades whatever and have put themselves in position to really be a strong contender next season, who had a good off season. Yeah, I'm really curious about two of the teams in the Metropolitan Division, the New York Rangers and and the and the New Jersey Devils. You know, it's been It's been on sort of dry spell for the Devils. Lots of, you know, sort of. Stutter steps moving back and forth. They had a number one pick, of course in Nicolosi sure, and then Jack Hughes as well. I think both those players a former Great foundation down the middle for the Devils and Tom Fitzgerald's done a really nice job there in building out around that taenia, added Thomas daughter Some veterans scoring upfront. I'm really curious about the back end, though. Of course, the big free agent signing with Dougie Hamilton a monster, uh, deal there at $9 million a year. It's a lot for Dougie Hamilton. But he's a dynamic player. He is a point machine, and that's really important for that Devils team is where they have struggled offensively. And the goaltending with Jonathan Bernier, who had, I think quietly, very strong season in Detroit, and I mean emerging, but not very good team. Um, I think that Mackenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier give the devil's a chance. In a very difficult division to play again, meaningful games. I'm not sure their playoff team but I think they're going to be in the mix. And, of course, the New York Rangers are just there's such a fascinating team coming off of You know the pick, um, going into last season of Alexis LaFraniere at number one and the year before with Capital Concho at number two, um, really have solidified themselves. Adam Fox are defending Norris Trophy champion. Of course, they needed to get tougher and Chris Jury, of course, well known to Sabre fans who is now going into his first season as the GM. After the shake up at the end of last season in upper management. I thought the ad of Barkley good drove from from Tampa Coming off the cup wins, there was really important. I think they're going to be harder to play against. They still need to decide what to do with me because advantage at who's got one year left on his deal, but the Rangers, I think the expectation is gonna be really high for that Ranger team. You know there's really no but you're gonna have to wear all of sin at some point there. Really? I don't think that contract will be an albatross because the bigger contracts that are on the books or would be on the books. I think two of them are coming off, right, So I think there's A great deal of flexibility. Even if Seattle doesn't take Skinner There's a great deal of flexibility. You know, what are the Sabres doing? Go Leo do they then sink big money into a goalie into a free agent goalie, whether it's all mark across the market and get a guy, But I'm saying I mean, he's got flexibility. Even Skinner's contract That does not preclude Kevyn Adams from doing any making any menus you've managed to make. No, that's right. You can go sign Gabriel Landeskog. It's not going to happen, of course, but my point is, they are in a position where the Skinner contract doesn't Preclude them from doing other things. Certainly I just think at the end of the day when you're when you look at value and just sort of look like a return on investment, it's that's That's part of the reason why the contract at this point hurts right is because Skinner's clearly not scoring at the same clip that he was, you know, in his contract year scores 40 goals, and I didn't think he would do that. I mean, he never did that in his career, but Skinner Even as he's as he's getting older, Nate, I mean, he should still at least be a guy you can count on for 20 goals. That's I mean, that's and that's what he has been in his career. 2025 goals, I think is not a lot to ask. And and all of a sudden he's got 21 goals will last two seasons. Granted, not full seasons, but 21 goals over. I don't know. 100 something games. Yeah, it was. Listen. I mean, he had a disappointing season last year. What's Granada going to do with him? Like stop making him a defensive player? He's not. He's not Listen. I mean, at the at the rate you're paying him. If your plan is to put them on a third or fourth line, checking role, then, like, just beg somebody to take him then and then, like trade, a second round, pick or trade, something to Seattle. And just get them off the books. If that's your plan with Skinner find a way to just get out from underneath it. That's what I was wondering if it's now that Skinner is going to be unprotected. The sport is facing a reckoning. It began with the toppling of one of the biggest domino's in the game. Mike Babcock out as coach of the Toronto Maple leafs tonight. Every mounting losses position became more and more tenuous and tonight his reign lean over. leafs nation is over. Mike Babcock was fired by the Toronto. Maple leafs for the same reason. Tons of hockey coaches have been fired before him. His team was underachieving. He might have been a bigger name than those other coaches but still not unusual then. The story started during the two thousand sixteen seventeen season. Mitch Moore had a private meeting with Mike Babcock and the coach asked then rookie to list the players on the team from Best Work Catholic to worst martyr complied not realizing that that talk within show his list to some of the players ranked the lowest and not long after that it became clear. The stories weren't just about Mike Babcock. Major allegations made against Calgary flames head coach. Bill Peters a former. I'm doing well you've You've covered a lot of dressing rooms and locker rooms over the years I was. I was thinking about this the other day when the stuff happened with the Chemo. Lou and Bill Peters out of thinking to myself. I ever seen a locker room. I thought something nothing really poisonous and happen. And I think because unbalanced I spent more time around baseball clubhouses than anything else and initially when I started reporting Winnipeg CFL locker rooms is kind of a little different than hockey. I mean baseball. There have been African American players. There've there've been Latino players in baseball has its issues but it's nothing to go on a clubhouse now and see that the white players are in the minority I mean that's just the way it is and the NFL. When I covered it's the same thing and I don't remember any relationship with a manager or coach or a team I thought was particularly toxic? I mean they're examples of tone deafness. But what I think happens more often than not in a lot of these situations is just the manager coach. Whatever you WANNA call it becomes tone-deaf two things? Well why don't you start then by explaining how we got here where it started with Mike. Babcock in the leafs. Yeah there's a couple of things first of all. I'm a little concerned that people are sort word of mixing. Mike Babcock not you but people in general people were kind of going all Mike Babcock and then Bill Peters. Because here's the thing Mike Babcock seems to have tried cried some Caveman Sports Psychology on Mitch. Martyr So tell us about that. Mitch Monitor the first year. The story is now now that everybody's confirmed Mike. Babcock wanted him to work harder. So Mike Babcock called them into his office and said list your teammates in terms of hardest working to least hardworking. And tell me where you'd put Yourself Yourself Mitch. Marna with coach wants to do this so he goes ahead and does that and Somehow and I I don't know when it came out but somehow Mike Babcock doc essentially went to some of the guys that were below martyring. Say Mitch thanks. She works harder than you. You know this guy's dog in it right now and he thinks that works harder than you and the best line out of the Whole Story and God love Mitch. Martin but the best line of the whole story's Mitch Marnie just kind of shrugging and going nobody took it seriously right. You know it's like that's just that's just babs so I mean their stories. You know you can go. God stories about would coaches used to do for motivating players or trying to catch players airs. I Never Scotty Bowman Scotty. Bowman got tired of his team's missing curfew. So Scotty Bowman would go down. And I can't remember which city this went down to the front desk of the hotel and I think curfew was midnight. Went Down to the front desk of the Hotel at eleven thirty gave a stick to the dorm and said do me a favor when the guys come in get them to sign the stick and we'll we're going to auction off to charity so the next day Scott he goes into the locker eight. These are all the guys that showed up after midnight. Their names are on the stick so I mean stuff like that is you know. That's all part of an old school. Coaching you mentality. Whatever you think of it? Yeah it's and I mean at the heart of the the coach player relationship and this and this is why we'll talk specifically about. Bill Peterson Chemo. Lucas IT'S A. It's a point I think people are missing. I mean at the heart of a coach player relationship. It's a power relationship. I'm the coach. I control the most important part of your career. I control your time I control. How many starts you're gonNA make I control? Will how many at bats you're going to get I control if you're going to be coming in the ninth inning. I control if you're going to start back to back games like Then I control. You're earning power. This is sort of at the route. That's the traditional relations traditional relationship. Is that changing it is in the NHL. I find this fascinating because the four major sports in North America all right now if you look at sort of the players relationship to to power in the game the NBA players leak. It just is players are getting lots of money They make a a lot of money from shoe deals so they're comfortable financially outside of what they're earning contract like Shaquille O'Neal didn't spend any money he made playing basketball. He invested all all he lived off. His shoe deals coaches have no power over anybody in the NBA the NFL's you know you're disposable piece of meat. There's no such thing as guaranteed contract. Baseball's always had a very very strong players association. It's Kinda splintered now and I think we're kind of in an every man for himself air but what's happened in hockey is there has been an an influx of really talented really young players and because of the way the NHL 's collective bargaining agreement is setup. You Essentially Ashley. Now have a bunch of guys who were twenty two twenty three or twenty four making eight million dollars a year under contract for five six or seven years and that's the biggest difference to me. Is that players always used to make more than the coach and this is specifically the NHL players always used to make more than the coach. But they've got more term So if you're Mike Babcock and you've got three years left on your contract you've got Mitch Monitor. He's got six years left. He's making ten and a half million dollars a year. How do you? How do you motivate that? How do you manage them? It would take us. Ice Type. Doesn't matter to him take two minutes ice time away from me. I'm getting ten million dollars a year and by the way I got a job here for years down the road and you say that so hockey ocoee more than any other sport I think is is going through. This and hockey is going to half the data and and and the coaches are going to have to. The players aren't going to have to adapt. The coaches are going to have to debt. And this this gets the Bill Peter Situation and and why I think this is particularly vile you know first of all. I mean there's no statute of limitations and racism so I've heard people will make the case. Well he said this ten years ago three organizations ago he wasn't even with the flames. You have somebody claiming that he. He used the N.. Word that he used a racial epithet. You have that player's teammates backing you up. You have subsequent you have players coming out. Who played for Bill? Peterson Peterson Carolina. Saying hey he physically abused me. You have players coming out and saying yeah not only did he. Physically abused Rod brindamour. Not only did he did. He physically abused guys. But you've got player saying oh by the way we spoke. The Ron Francis who was general manager the team at the time and he didn't do anything wrong. There was something but the Akeem loose. The situation is really. I find it really bothersome. Because what was he supposed to do. You know these guys are playing in the American Hockey League They're not making a lot of money. Bill Peters when he was coaching that team the Rockford ice hawks. He held the future in his hands. so if you're a guy like a chemo Lou and you're trying to establish yourself or you're trying to get your career going going to your general manager and writing out your head. Coaches racist is probably not not a good career. Move and I think more than anything else. What this says is that at that time? Ten years ago that organization Chicago Blackhawks. There wasn't a structure in place. I mean I'm not gonNA say that guys don't yell things at each other in the locker room or on the ice and we we know they do. We know that racial epithets unfortunately are still a part of the sort of the on Ice Onfield Dialogue and sports. I don't think this happens now though like if we were rewinding this Chemo Lou had been Ah. I don't think that happens. 'cause he reports to somebody or he goes on social media then and it's taken care of but it bothers me that people are saying that some people are saying well you know ten years ago and nobody else stood up. It's people have to understand Dan that again. This gets to that that power relationship between the player and the coach. There's no way the player could you know what are you GonNa do. You're going to sacrifice your long term financial future because of this. I mean I'm not. I'm not saying that means. Bill Peters is right but hockey I think more than any other more than any other sport just by the the nature of how players are developed. Kids leave home. Kids go to town cities. They're billeted with people dependent on the structure. They are dependent on on the power structure there absolutely dependent on the power structure. And I think maybe that's what has created this culture around hockey the the NHL is really really trying. I think to find a way and I mean the NHL in general teams coaches are trying to find a way to deal with this the new age the players the the ultimate lesson the lesson from hopefully for this whole thing with Bill Peters is that there has to be every organization has to look at itself often say do we have the structures in
