"Check in with Jimmy and South Carolina. Hello, Jimmy. Hey, Paul, thanks for taking my call. Thank you. Longtime listener and a second time caller. And I just wanted to get your thoughts on something. I'm not a spring chicken, but I think you've got a few years on me. And I've been around long enough to see the SEC dominate both the football world and the baseball world two and now they're taking over the basketball world. And this is something in my opinion that's been building for several years. And I'm curious now that we're in a sense controlling the three major sports, I know to different degrees, but we're still we're there. What you think about that is it good is it bad and what might the rest of the country be thinking about? I have to say this and even though you are correct in terms of what we're talking about right now until the SEC wins a national championship in basketball, I still think so there will be some skepticism. And the SEC has not won a national championship in basketball since 2012. That has to change. And we've seen in that period, Kentucky go back in 15. We've seen South Carolina and we've seen auburn. But one of those this year or sometimes soon, I believe strongly that the SEC once it wins at all, I think then, whether it's Kentucky or auburn or somebody else, then I think we can make that claim until then, I think it's a reach. Well, we've certainly made some inroads. I think you would agree. And dominating. The truth. Maybe I stretched in a little bit there. But we're certainly trending in the right direction. If you go back ten or 15 years ago, it wasn't where it is now. And I'm just has a well, Jimmy. He's going through phases where you had Arkansas, a major factor for a lot for a couple of years after it got in the league. You've had LSU have some runs clearly Kentucky is always been there. But the gold standard in basketball is getting to the tournament going far in the tournament, making the final four and ultimately winning it. And I think this year looks good. You have two very strong candidates for the final four. And then there's a handful of teams that come and go on the right screen. Hey, thank you very much for the call. Let's check in with Barry next to hey Barry, you're on the air. Hello. Hi. How are you doing? Very well. Thank you. I was just all back. I mean, the football season is over, and I lost national Saturday. But I just wanted to call in second congratulations to all of them laid a hundred Obama and then take the room and sweep them out for the last. Well, they sure did. It was a significant accomplishment. I appreciate your call. Bryce is up next. A Hebrew ice car ahead. Thanks, and let me tell. Thank you for taking my call. Listen, what I think is going on down in auburn is my personal opinion is Brian harsh. I want to be Nick Saban and he got the scans on the wall, just like Jim Harbaugh and to be doing any of that until he gets some scans on the wall. What is your personal opinion? Well, yeah, all you can judge somebody on is their record and I'll never forget sitting out there in College Station in November and auburn was coming to town in auburn sill had a chance to win the SEC and to be a playoff team. And they haven't won since. And that's really the problem. Losing your last 5, especially just throwing up and letting the Alabama game get away. And then having your coaching staff implode is a very bad look. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. They can't say better count on revenue trees for the basketball because too many for the football and tell you that. Well, again, at one time, I thought harsh was on the verge of it. And I've talked to him a couple of times, and I've always liked him and it just seems like he's got to get a hold of this place. And that's for sure. JD is up next. Hello JD, you're on the air. I'm so how you doing? We are doing well. Thank you. Thank you. I am California. If I am a president, but let me show you first of all I was invited based on the loose their mission. So hierarchical bucket every two 6 million. And the next thing was Alabama and Giorgio France. Very smart is a good guess. They stay with Alabama and he was just as good as taking place, because Kirby's a good guy. And Paul that goes with, oh, he must be also good in our leadership international. Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Let's take a break, more of your phone calls here at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5, some more guests in the next couple of hours. We hope you'll stick around..

"But you got to continue to hit the transfer of portal because now that is a part of recruiting. And if you don't accept it or use it to your advantage, you're losing out. And right now, it's so many players out there. You can feel roster spots, but you gotta make sure you get the right guys. Don't just bring in guys and say, hey, this is what we're doing. Look how many guys we got in here. You got to bring the right people. And if not, then just sit it out and understand that you have time that Florida understands that. Yes, they want to compete for Georgia. Yes, they want to compete for SC championship. But I don't think it's going to be next year or the year after. Roman Harper dropping by and spitting out some truth as always. Missing you. How did I get into this all from conversation? How did you drag me into that? We're not done. Thank you. Always great. Talk to Roman. We are coming back with much, much more. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Good afternoon, legend. What's going on, coach? We are doing great. Thank you. Man, good to talk to you, brother. Great. So, hey, Jimbo Fisher didn't go east coast. He went west mess on that bull crap. That's not east coast, Jimbo. I found it. I come on here, yesterday I told you they bought a recruitment class. Do you remember me turning you there? I've heard you say that, yes. Yeah, and who confirmed it yesterday, Paul. Only Nick Saban only needs to even confirm what I said. I mean, I mean, that's like the Pope confirming something that you say ain't it, Paul, that the equivalent of college football, when you say something, I mean, that's like the Pope confirmed something you had to say right there, rose. I mean, come on, if there was a scoundrel, Paul, you know who acts like that, Paul. You know who acts like that? Who's that? Flying bomb callers and people that are guilty. Then the new SMU of college football. That's what he is. That's what you are as young, Fisher. You are the new SMU of college football. Everybody knows it. And you just confirmed it by going off and acting like a frigging idiot. How dare how dare you park call out Nick Saban? You listen to me till those pressure. You wouldn't be nothing without Nick Saban brother. You wouldn't be out there getting all the big old guys money. You wouldn't be counting them checks and looking at them zero his brother without mix saving. You ought to be sending him a gift basket. You oughta be calling him every morning at 8 o'clock in the morning and kissing his ass and thanking him for putting you where you are today because you're nothing without him. And who the hell is Texas a and M to talk like, yo, yo, y'all better go that we're here. Where do you plan? You never won a championship. I don't see no SEC rings. I don't see no championship rings. All I know is I see the new frigging SMU of college football. Don't never call out The Godfather Jimbo Fisher because if you think I'm black cat and east coast, you get under Nick Saban skin and you'll see the real black hat and east coast brother. Nick Saban is The Godfather of the black cat crew. Don't ever do it again, Jim both Fisher. Now Paul, I want to know as one thing. Are they giving out red Corvettes? SMU. That's who you are at Texas a and M FMU. Lesnar frigging. Now, Jim both is going to ever come out of Saudi Arabia about Nick Saban a year. And legend. Going yard on him. Anyway, let's continue with more phone calls and Luke is up next. Hey, Luke, you're on the air. Hey, what's up,.

"Has the name of a collar. That is my name on Twitter, by the way. But seriously, it doesn't take much to get something like that started and then the next thing we've had people call it, what do you think about Jimbo Fisher spending $30 million for it? And now he's brought it into the open. Right. So you can't wash it away. No, you can't, and that's also a problem in the world that we live in now is that you'd rather be first than right. So people as long as you just get it out there, you win. It doesn't matter if it's true or not. Let the general population decide decide on those things. But I just want to be the first one to get out there and say something that, hey, text names, Jean, they can't get this good of a class. They can't get this many top tier 5 star players to come to Texas a and M without offering them or paying them or promising them something. It must be illegal. And that's just not true. According to Jimbo, right now, it can be true because what's really cheating at this point, we don't know anything that any of these young men were offered or given to sign, all we know is that they signed a letter of intent, and that takes in him as a number one recruiting class in the country. But does that equate to wins? They still have to win games on Saturday. They have had great players. Right. Endless stream of great players. You look at their defense this past year. They were one of the best defenses. Are you eating spend as much? Paul, I was always taught if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying. So at least they're trying. And I applaud them for that. But Roman, I don't want to go old school on you. When you were in Alabama, they were cheating. Actually, they were not cheating when I was there Paul because they got caught previously. I think you had something to do with that at one point in time. You know, we don't have to talk about that. This should be an investigative reporter. There's no reason to be investigating a reporter now today. You just make it up. That's it. Just say it. And whether you're right or wrong, I wish it had been that easy. I got my start. I wouldn't have lost all the friends and hair that I currently don't have. Is that what that was? So let's talk about what it means. Alabama's had number one classes and translated Kirby now has done that. Will this be the moment for Jimbo Fisher? And so number one classes don't exactly equate to wins. You know, Tennessee had some top tier classes as well. And it didn't quit to win. So what I do think that it equates to is this is that it allows you the opportunity to miss. It allows you to all of a sudden, you know, you get a 5 star and you can whiff on a 5 star because you got three four stars that one of those guys are going to hit at that same position to give you a chance to wear. You don't even feel the pain. So what you have to do is continue to capitalize on this that obviously Jimbo is building something that these players have a vision and something that they want to continue to be a part of that you're locking down Texas. Whatever that is, that he's selling these young men are buying into it. So I think it allows them to actually allow them to miss a little bit more that every 5 star, not every player that everybody's reading about today has to be a home run. That the deeper part of this class, some players that we're not talking about today may actually rise to the top and be one of the guys that when it's all said and done two or three years down the road, this is the player that's the real star in this class. We all know the Nolan kid's going to be a home run because he's the number one overall player. And according to ESPN, they don't miss on those things. Those guys do great homework and research when it comes to their playing ability, their background, their sense of urgency when they're on the field. They know exactly what they're doing. They don't miss on too many number one overall recruits. But when you're adding other details to that recruiting class, that's when you really can actually get the wins. They still have to answer the quarterback position as well. And they do. So beyond that, beyond a and M, you have Alabama in a pretty traditional position. What else should you, what else do you see in today's results? Does it tell you anything? No, it just tells me that the SEC does mean a little bit more that it's still jam packed at the top that there's still highly competitive and that Alabama and Georgia are not going anywhere that texted their name is going to have to knock them off. And they're probably need a little bit of help. Auburn got a lot of things going on there on that on campus. Talk to you about what is going on down there. Look, all my Friends, they're a little concerned. It's a little bit of concern. It's a lot of moving parts. I know we didn't rehearse this Paul, but we're going there. Let's just go. So auburn, you know, you fire Bobo after the season. That's fine. He wasn't your guy anyways. You brought him in to actually secure like, all right, we have some SEC people that have been used to the SEC and what it's like to coach and play and recruit in this area. Well, he's gone. You bring in your own guy, the offensive quarterback coach from Seattle. He's gone. Already. Have you ever seen a guy gone before? I know Alabama had a coach that had never made it to his first game, but he did make it to a practice. We did. We had three months with Mike price. We had three months. We did not make it to the practice. So that was very shocking when I woke up and heard about this. And now it's so many other things going on. This is gone. Gone. So you have Oklahoma state? Well, Oklahoma state the last three years have put together some really good defensive so. And you don't like the situation you're in. Yeah, so you get out. So you get out. There are some smart. I'm out of here. Don't like the situation you're in. I think that guy in the head coach's office be here long. So he's out. And I don't know coach that well, but I'm just telling you from the things that I'm seeing on the outside looking in. It's some things that don't look great on the inside. They must get this thing settled down because what's next are the players. We had some players leaving your quarterback bow nicks. He left to Oregon. You bring in another quarterback or two. They have to get this thing steered in the right direction. And you can only look so far as the head coach right now. And look, the best thing that's going on for arbor right now is the basketball team is number one in the country. And the basketball team and what they're doing over there is taking over and nobody's even talking about what's going on in football in the state of Alabama right now because the university of albans basketball team is ranked number one in the nation for the first time. They have probably consensus number one overall pick in jabari, whatever's last name is forgetting me right now. But anyways, all I know is auburn basketball is saving the auburn football team right now. And that's really the signal. That does have a shelf life. It's not going to last forever. It's not going to last forever. We both know about the state of Alabama. How much they care about their football? Talking to Roman Harper, we have billionaire on later. He improves his classes. Big time. But there's still nowhere to be found. According to SEC. Yeah, I mean, that must have been a bad class when he walked in there. Well, there was nothing on the shelf. When he got there. There was a recruiter. Was absolutely nothing on the shelf when he got in there. So for to see him to be in the close to the hundreds when he got there. And now they're all the way up to 34. Hats off to Dan in here and ask him what he was doing. Well, he loves, you know, he's been in front of the TV quite a few. Quite a bit since. Getting away from Florida. So I'm sure he would actually accept that. The one thing I will apply to Billy nephew though, he got 5 ESPN 300 players. All right, so if you can get 5 players that'll come out there and help contribute. We got another two or three that nobody's talking about right now. They can come in and play and actually help this roster. I don't know what this Florida team looks like next year. I like Billie Napier as a head coach. I like him as a program builder. This first year is a watch. It's almost like what they had to do with South Carolina last year. And what some other teams are going to have to do..

"Find show podcast. Interpreted any way you want. It sounds like he was coming after a couple of coaches. And his own league Roman Harper joining us Roman. You can't fake anger. Unless you're an actor. And he's not an actor. No, he seemed like he was going after guys. I didn't hear the whole interview. I kind of walked in late on it. And I get it. He's going to fight for his families on fight for his people. And right now, he's feeling like he's under attack that people are saying that Texan was paying for this and that's all they're doing. That's the only reason that they're getting players. And what that really truly means is that it's taking away from the ability and the job that he and his coaching staff is done in terms of recruiting these players. These players just don't show up because you're often a check. No, you're often the opportunity to win ball games to be a part of something special to actually go out there and compete for a championship and that they are building something special in the SEC at Texas a and M that they have a dream or that they have a vision for them to be successful in their future. My question is, how can you tell nowadays if someone's cheating or not? Well, we're doing the same thing. If somebody asked me that question, I would follow up with another question and say, what is cheating? Yeah. Like, what is truly cheating at this point? Because right now, everything seems to be above board. And until the NCAA steps up and says that this is wrong, this is right. Then we all truly are just living in this place of there really are no rules. And when there are a place of no rules, you can do whatever you really want to, and then just blame it on the next person or say that whatever they're getting at any point in time, which I think the players should have been getting from the beginning of time that it is all now just in NIL do. Yeah, and I don't know where he called out some website called bro bob, but which I have seen before. And the guy named sliced bread, I know sliced bread. He.

"You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. And welcome back on national signing day where it's not over yet and we may not really even know at the end of the day. There are still a few players that may not sign until February we're talking to many of the coaches. We have Roman Harper on coach Lee in the next hour. We're expecting a conversation here shortly with Jimbo Fisher who has one of the top classes in the country. Let's continue with your phone calls. And Mark is up next. Hey Mark, good afternoon. Hey, Paul, how are you doing? We're doing great. Thank you. My call is about, you know, I'm a die hard Georgia fan. I love coverage. What are you doing with Georgia? But I just, I'm having a hard time seeing it. Get us over the hump, you know? Get us a national title. And we have all these talented quarterbacks coming to Georgia. When do you think we'll see a calendar quarterback emerges and elite quarterback at Georgia? Well, I don't know. I'm hesitant to make too many draw too many conclusions until the season's over. And for the obvious reason, Georgia is either one game or two games away from a national championship or 16 minutes away from a disaster. So I think when we know how the season ends, it's going to be easier. I know Jimbo's recruiting quarterbacks every year. And the portal is also available. But he really needs to write the ship after two weeks ago in Atlanta. Thank you very much for the call. Jack is up next. Hello jacket afternoon. Hey, Paul, how you doing? We are doing great. Okay, so I'm an auburn fan and I've been keeping up with a lot of the recruiting and national signing day and trevon Reid and Zachary Zach ether's David doing a lot of leg work. What are you seeing in the oven recruiting class this year? And it feels like we've made a lot of strides. I just wanted to hear what you thought about it. Yeah, Jack, I think it's happened so quickly. It's a little bit hard to wrap one's arms around because 40 hours ago, it looked pretty bad and the finish has been phenomenal. Now, does that change or move the needle dramatically? And you know what I'm about to say, auburn has salvaged a good recruiting class, but is it enough to move up significantly in the SEC west? There are already, I mean, nobody is going to budge Alabama or a and M at the moment. And are they the next school that makes a move? LSU is a little bit in transition as we know with a new coach. All miss and this would be state. For whatever reason, have not recruited at the elite level. So is that door open now for auburn? And it looks pretty positive. I'll tell you that. Yes, sir. Thank you so much. Thank you very much for the call. Appreciate it. Let's check in with Dawson, who is in college station, hello Dawson. Hey, Paul. I wanted to talk about Bobby Taylor, the recruit coming to a and M, what's your opinion on the role of him playing such a big part in getting more players at a and M and what does that say about the future of the football program here? Well, it's cliche Dawson to say that your own recruits are the ones that do you the most good, but it's true. And I'm sure Jimbo would say that or any other coach that once you get players committed, they end up doing a lot of your recruiting. The great classes are built like that. Thank you for the call. Do appreciate it. Cheerleader is up next. I just pass through a branded George in that way car be strong. That is correct. Well, I'm driving from dozens through trolley and run to Genoa all that beautiful country down here. But listen, Roman Harper man, he had he had him a talk. He his talk was just great and how he could remember all that it didn't sound like he was reading from the script at all, but about the guy going to Jackson in Mississippi. And sounds like he was went through the portal and got paid some money, whatever he did. No, no. He didn't go through any he didn't go through the portal. He was a high school player who just signed that a high school. Just committed. Okay. Well, if they're going to be paid, I don't care. And the loyalty thing, the coaches stopped being loyal years ago and when they started leaving in the middle of the year after they had gone into the recruit times and given them all this price and all this, you know, about them and how mama. And then they leave in the middle of the year, they leave with a gazillion dollars and leave them holding the bag. I think the players should be able to lead. It's when they get ready if they're not being flied and there's another pain. Well, they are. That is cheerleader. That's where we are right now. And I know it's going to be more and more. It's going to be more and more. And I'm all in favor of it because if the players weren't there, there would not be a stadium. And the players have finally learned that they have worse and the people, the big guys, the big women, they're gonna pay for it, and it's time for them to own a part of it. Now I want to change the subject, just a little bit, okay? Well, I appreciate the college cheerleader. Thank you for the Jake is up next to hey Jake. Hey, hey, Paul. It's been a long time since I've caught your show. Me and my dad were Georgia fans and we haven't tuned in for.

"And now there's a Mexican event. Yeah, Bobby for whatever reason you are not you may have been speaking into the wrong end of the phone there, but we couldn't hear you very well. That sounds weird, doesn't it? Stacy is in Tennessee, hello, Stacey. Hello, mister fine, bob. Again, it's an honor and a privilege to speak to you again, sir. Thank you. I haven't spoken with you since February when the Pruitt debacle was going on. And I'd just like to say if you'd have told me then what Tennessee was going to do this year, I would have been shocked as I still am today. Sir, if you could elaborate on our recruiting class for the first class or coach Apple, and what you for say in our future, usher would appreciate it and I'll hang up and listen. Thank you. Thanks, Stacey. I think Tennessee did well and what Josh I was up against is this recruiting whisper out there, which hurts, but I think what he showed last year is you don't have to have a team loaded with 5 star players to succeed. And he is a very good developer of talent and I think we know what an excellent offensive mind he is. So I think Tennessee is doing fine. I would like to see them higher. Projecting down the road, but it will take a little bit of time. And I think hopefully this NCAA issue will cease to be an issue here soon. Thank you for the call. We appreciate it very much. Kevin is up next in Atlanta. Hello, Kevin. How you doing? Hey there. Kevin, good afternoon. It's just mind boggling as a self absorbed Alabama fan that former Alabama player talk. About getting paid and how it's supposed to work. I mean, if anybody knows, it's an Alabama player because. You know what I mean? Well, it is worth reminding people that Roman was there at a time when the school was put on probation. I'm sure that is all changed as we all know. Hey, thank you for the call. Appreciate it. Let's talk to Mike. In Houston, hey Mike. Hey, how's it going, Paul? Very well. Thank you. Hey, I just wanted to comment that when you get Jim bow on there. Tell him not to get his feelings hurt because he must have got on Cal said his ass a little bit and so you know you've got to see them start. So he had to jump through the portal. Well, yeah, I don't know. That's really not one of the centerpieces of our conversation, but calzone is looking for a better opportunity like every one else. So T is in Alabama you're on the air hose. How you going Paul? We are doing great. Thank you. Hey, I just called him the same man at all. I was worried for a while about I was recruiting class this year, but Brown also he kind of came in and he made it better than where the walls. Yeah, I would say the biggest turnaround in 24 hours has been auburn. I haven't had a chance to really digest digest what he's done. We'll talk to him a little bit later. But yes, you are correct. He has picked up and really closing well as important. That's the last impression you have in the public's mind and that momentum does carry over. Thank you very, very much. Matt is up next. So what do you mean by our class call so far? Matt mat looks really good and that's where we're going next. We'll talk to Jimbo Fisher as we continue here on national signing day more of your phone calls at 855-242-7285..

"The coverage all day long and Roman you've watched it unfold for three hours. I have what stood out. That still the top of the top is really strong. Alabama, Georgia, Texas a and M was putting their hands on a lot of different things and saying that we are going to be a large player in the SEC going forward. When it comes to the recruiting trail, and now we just have to make those high number recruits kind of come to fruition on the field on Saturdays and see that. It all starts at the quarterback position. They have to get that part answered if I'm texting them. Also, Georgia, I need to see Georgia at some point with Kirby smart, get a quarterback that's not just a guy just somebody that can just kind of run the offense, but I need him to be the quarterback that literally elevates the play of everyone else around them because if you look at championships now in the last what, 8 to ten years. Every single one of the teams that made it to a championship or won the championship had quarterbacks that all had some kind of playing time or swing at the league, except for Jacob coker out of Alabama. And that's because they gave the ball a day or Henry for a bazillion times and he run a brand for Heisman. So other than that, you just don't see it, and that's the trend that's going on in college. And it will continue to go on. Also, Missouri, big day to today with some of their big signing class that was really big for them. To see some of the guys and really locking down the state of Missouri. Also, the number one wide receiver in this class from east St. Louis right across the water right there, which I didn't realize that Craig Harvard talked about that all day, so I know it now because we've been together for like four and a half 5 hours today. Also South Carolina. I just got a great idea for Christmas. I'm gonna get you a map of the Midwest. Yeah, I don't know it. I don't know it. So thank you. I appreciate it. So there's east St. Louis, Illinois. St. Louis, Missouri, and as you go down the Mississippi River, west Memphis Arkansas at the same thing. In Memphis, Tennessee, right across the bridge. See, I don't, I'm sorry. I just do. I'm from there. Yeah. And geographically, I'm just not good at that. I'm sorry. I'm not. But I appreciate that. Because you're not just teaching me, Paul, you're teaching the first time. Yeah, were you teaching the viewers as well? So thank you, Paul for that. I was going to be a geography teacher. I mean, you're doing a standout job. Look like oil might be one. You definitely look, you look the part that's for sure. But who also South Carolina has done a great job Shane beamer continued to just win. This seems like the more he's been on the job, the more he's found ways to win. And every time he gets in front of the podium or in front of the camera, he says the right things. He's genuine. He comes off loving the program and really trying to build something special. And not only that, but he's also Jean chips that brought up a great point today that he's in South Carolina at this right time where Clemson all of a sudden is having to deal with a little bit of adversity and everybody knows if you want to be great in college. You need to win your own state and recruiting. So right now, South Carolina has a chance to make up just a little bit of ground. Not going to say they're better, but all you have to do is just keep chopping away at it. And right now they're there at the right time. So that's been really unique. Vanderbilt is actually doing fairly well in recruiting, Florida being behind is another thing that a lot of people are kind of worried or just it's in the news that they want to talk about it. Old miss is actually lacking just because of numbers. They got some good players in their class, just numbers wise. It's not where most people would anticipate them to be at. I want to ask you about what is going to be the biggest story of the day and I don't know how much we'll talk about it here. But Travis hunter is a cornerback. He's either the number one or two player in the entire country. He was committed to Florida state, and at the last minute he yanked out his hat and is going to play for Deion Sanders. And there's no doubt that there's a lot of money behind this. And it's legal money. Yes, Paul. It's legal. We can talk about it. And look, who better to go to than the best corner in that I've ever seen play in that I thought was the man and the one guy that talked about Dion had money in college 'cause he played baseball, professionally. Right. So he knows what it's like to walk around a little bit of change in your pocket and what that feels like. It's all right, well, we don't have to talk about everything, but what we do know is that he had a little money in his pocket from baseball and he saw the differences in it. And not only that, but he made a song about it. Must be the money that's turning me. Oh, it's exactly. Right. And he went and got the number one corner in the country who some people think is the best player overall in this country in this year's class of recruits. And again, to go to Jacksonville, Jackson state is huge. It changed the narrative that you have to go to search and set school that you have to go to these things or these 5 schools to get paid this, and that if you want to go to the league, you have to go to these top schools. Well, that's wrong and it's literally changing the landscape of everything. I applaud Deion Sanders for going out there and for going into this young man's house and actually having the courage to do it. Because a lot of HBCU coaches are scared to go out there and put themselves out there. Why am I spending my money on this recruitment? I'm not going to be able to get this kid. Well, Deion showing everybody. You know what? With the right, creativity, the right mindset, game plan. And NIL money, we can go out there and get anybody else in the kids that come here can play and be able to go to the next level and achieve their dreams just like any other school in this country. And I have a feeling people with Florida state. I think they just gave Mike norville an extension today. They might want to pull it back. To me, it looks like their next coach are to be dehan Sanders. Well, you could have said that last year, too. I mean, yeah. I think that Dion's been able to do at Jackson state in that amount of time. To be able to pull that kind of money in from the alumni and to get the things going..

"It is national signing day and we will have all of it here and we will try to cover every available. Angle from start to finish as we say hello to you and get right to the headlines. National signing day 21, the race is on and at this hour, which is a three O one Eastern Time. Let's look at the rankings and yeah, it's a surprise. Alabama. Number one, Georgia at the number two position, I'll go ahead and read this for those of you who are not in front of a television right now, which would include a lot of you in cars and listening on the radio. A and M it, the three position missou at number four, that is a tenth overall in the country, Kentucky. At the number 5 position 13th overall South Carolina 6 in the SEC 16th, auburn has made quite a move overnight and currently has the 7th position and 7 teeth overall. This is an all SEC list when you get right down to it both obviously in the SEC but outside as well, Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee at number tenth, which makes them 23rd overall, Mississippi all this, Vanderbilt, 34th nationally in Florida is in the rear. Elsewhere in recruiting have you heard about what Jackson Jackson state did? That's Deon Sanders team. Travis hunter, the number one player in some polls in the entire nation, spurned Florida state. Yes, that is Deon Sanders Alma mater to land at Jacksonville Jackson state, not Jacksonville, David Jackson state in Mississippi. That is the story of the day. It's a story that will get a lot of juice around the country, transcending the college football platform, and we'll talk more about how that happened. Assuming we can figure it out later in the show, Roman Harper joins us right off the top jumbo, three 45 Clarke Lee, Brian, a big rush, Shane beamer and Dan grunfeld, the son of Ernie grunfeld, the Tennessee star book out, we'll talk to him in the final hour. So it's been a busy one. And the Jackson state move is certainly got a lot of people's attention and does it sound like maybe the NIL was involved in that. It's just a hunch. Let's get to the phones as well and get your reaction quickly at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5. Let's begin with pat in Nashville. Hey pat. Hey, Paul, how are you doing, bud? We are doing great. Thank you. How about the doors, man? They had a better class than 96 other D one teams. I hope that translates into some more victories next year for Clark. I hope so. Yeah, Clark Lee did a really good job. His first full recruiting class. One more, one more quick thing, Paul. And I'm serious when I ask this, so I'd like some further callers to weigh in on this. If you lined up bam and Nick and Joe from red bay, which one of those is the dumber of the two, are they? I think that is such an easy answer. You're not going to you're not going to force me to say that are you, but. There are two of a kind. Well, no. There is a difference though between the two. One, one is funny. One is both have class, unfortunately, it's all low. Thank you for the call. John in Tennessee is up next. Hey, John. Hey, my name is Tom Kyle. Thank you. I take the tier 6 copyright next year and I think it's so sad we're coming back. Well, you know what, I think with hooker coming back, you're right. I think Tennessee has a chance to move off of what it did this year. I think there are going to be a 7 win team or an 8 win team. Because I think they're going to win the ball game and it's in a really good start for Josh hyper. Thank you for the call. Appreciate it very, very much. Let's check in with Bill in Florida hello Bill. Hey, how are you? Very well. Thanks for the first time power, but I'll listen to each afternoon. The primary thing I would like you to answer for me Paul is, what's the primary reason other than I think personally, it has a lot to do with money and notoriety, but your take on so many moves and I'm going back to even when the coach at duke had players starting to leave, he was national champions a number of years and then all of a sudden everybody takes off. Give me some reasons why you personally thank there's so much movement when within the last couple of years. Well, thanks for the call, Bill. Well, I think you're talking about the players, COVID made it a little bit easier to transfer everybody everybody picked up a free year. And the lessening of restrictions has made it easier. And players nowadays just want to play. They want to further their opportunity. And that's aside from the NIL. I thank you for the call. Appreciate it. Eddie is in Georgia. You're on the air hello Eddie. Yes, sir, brother, Paul, how are we doing today? We are doing great. Thank you. Yes, sir. Even though you get the number one recruiting all the time, you still got a coach in players up to play. And Nick Saban's staff does add all the time. I'm just wondering on black Monday after the NFL season is over. Are we gonna lose Bill O'Brien or we gonna lose the offensive line coach also? Do you think? Eddie, I don't know the answer to that..

"More. We're talking to Roman Harper here for those of you who just pop back on board here. And yeah, I joke about Kirby. He's the SEC coach of the year. He's doing great. Except now he's the pressure's on Paul. He's in the playoffs. But they don't need another egg laid. No, they don't. Michigan's a great team. They've had a great season Jim Harbaugh should be another coach that's in the coach of the year discussion with what he's been able to do and accomplish this year from Michigan. Beating Ohio State and doing the things that they've done. But Michigan and Georgia are mirror images when it comes to how they want to win ball games in college football. They both want to be able to run the football starts up front offensively running the football play action pass game coming to live playing really good stout defensively. They win defensively different ways. Michigan wins defenses by the past arrest. There are two edge rushers, a jabo, an Aden Hutchinson, both ballers. They both can get after the quarterback and get sex at high numbers. So that can affect Georgia. If they don't secure the edges and take care of those guys up front, then you will not have the explosive passes that Georgia likes to get down the field. Missing on the other, as we all know how they're going to have to defend Georgia, you have to try and get fancy a little bit in the run game to try and move these big guys of Georgia up front in their front 7 and then have an opportunity to maybe attack them downfield. They just don't have the speed guys that Alabama has like jamison Williams and the quarterback as well to be able to attack George's secondary the way Alabama exploited them over the past weekend. So you feel moderately confident about Georgia getting passion? I do. I do. I still think George is the best. I mean, they were the best team in the country. All year long. But, I mean, they just got dropped kicked in the face last week and didn't know it didn't respond. And you also got to say, Georgia hasn't played a tough game. It's something to be said about playing tough games and being in tough moments and how do you respond from that? Georgia was not pushed all year long. I heard a crazy stat steps in but stets and Ben only thrown 20 passes in the fourth quarter all year long. That means they're totally sitting on the ball and there's no pressure to go out there and win a game for your quarterback. So what happens and how do you respond when you have to go out there and win a game? And they did not answer. Kirby, sometime in the late third, early fourth, given JT Daniels a shot. I mean, he's made this bed. He kind of has to be with it. Yeah, he's there. And that's not on me. I'm just an analyst. That's Kirby's team. He knows that team. He knows that quarterback room. And he knows what's best for his team. So it'd be really hard for me. I could sit up there and say what to do. You know, I could sit up there and say whatever I want Paul, but I'm not gonna do that, 'cause I love Kirby as a coach as a player as a human being. I love you. I got Kirby's back, so I'm not sure. I get it. You can question Paul. That's what you get paid for, but you get paid for that. I'm up here to say answers, and I'm not going there because I'm not going to sit up here and tell you what Kirby should do. That's Kirby's team. Well, that's George. Let me ask you this. By you saying that? Are you not telling us you agree with the question that he should? Because otherwise you would have said, don't let me put words in your mouth. Otherwise, you would have said, he did the right thing. Also, look at it from the other side. Okay, if you do put in JT Daniel, someone some of Georgia's biggest plays in the second half with sets and Bennett scrambling for multiple yards of running the football. JT's not doing that. J two would have been a sit and duck back there. So you might not even have the success that you had in the second half. So I can actually defend it a lot better than I can actually tell you about JT. Tell me why the most vaunted defense in modern history couldn't lay a hand on Bryce young because Bryce young is slick in the pocket and like I said, when everybody looked at me like I was crazy on Friday when I said George's best pass rusher and edge Russian Anderson is suspended that their big guys up front are actually really great run stoppers not dynamic pass rushers and that when Alabama gave up 7 sacks versus auburn, which you yourself admittedly off camera, has said I put way too much stock into that. Thank you for admitting that you were wrong Paul. Not in front of everybody else but in front of me, but I'm calling you out about it. Thank you. That, yes, I'm going to have never say anything to you important that to you. Okay, I'll probably put it right back on front of air. But yes, the fact that all those things matter and that when you play against auburn, it really wasn't so much that arvin just physically dominated Alabama's offensive line as much as it was the hand snap and the malfunction between the quarterback and sinner snap and all those things, the organization, the offensive line, not getting off on the ball and auburn getting four or 5 sacks just off of that alone. Is what it really piled up to. So the numbers in the optics are not what exactly what they seem. I thought Alabama still had the advantage offensively and that they were going to be able to score and actually stress Georgia's defense like no other team had the ability to be able to do. We are chatting with Roman Harper, Roman, if they played again. And I know that there's four to 5 weeks away. Why would any of us believe the game will be different? I mean, because people make up reasons to be right all the time. And that's what they will do, but I'm still going to stick with Alabama. I think it'll be a different Georgia team. I'd love how to see how they perform versus Michigan, how did the health factor go into it, especially with you being out for Alabama? That would be another key piece. How does Alabama continue to have these other young wide receivers step up and how do they handle the games versus Cincinnati, who will not be an easy out for Alabama, not as much as what some people are trying to say. You mentioned some of the other games. Florida, UCF. I will Kentucky. Sneaky, good game. Yes. Because Iowa wins all force and turnovers their second in the country by forcing turnovers. Kentucky, we all know is a good team. But man, they have their blunders and turn the football over at high, high rates at times. So if they get in one of those games where they turn the football over, I was going to win this game. Because that's what they do. But I was not a pretty game. They're not going to make this thing beautiful. And they're not going to be exotic. They're just going to do what they do and just win it because they're defense. Old miss Baylor, what Dave Iran has been able to do this year, he should be in the head coach of the year, conversation as well. Great job when the big 12 this year and just going out there and playing their style of branded defense and winning ball games the way that they want to. Mack Reyes done a really good job of taking care of the football this year. If Baylor has their way, they're going to force them into some mistakes..

"And I'm excited to see from the ones that first started us off with UCF in Florida, which Florida you better be ready because UCF is going to be ready. And it also depends on what all the new ways of college football is not only who's motivated to play in these alternate ball bowl games, but who will play in these other bowl games? Let me ask you one thing before we get to that. And John wilder who is probably the voice of the PAC 12 tweeted out earlier that he had heard I'll just read his tweet about what you think. He said, I have heard from two PAC 12 sources that Phil knight is interested in the lane train for Oregon. Can you see Lanka in an organ? Well, I know Phil can afford to buy out. That's one thing I do know. And yes, if he would have been on the lane train sooner, I'm sure he sure and Lang was listening to everybody that was spilled and calls from everybody. I think he wanted the Miami job. Miami won a crystal ball. They got crystal ball late. And now, you know, hopefully they can salvage a whole recruiting class, but we do not know. I do think lane would be very, very intrigued and going anywhere else, but where he is now the old miss, just because that's my personal opinion, that lane is very interested in always dating somebody being a school for four or 5 years and then moving on to the next. It's really hard to actually be able to sustain success for 5, ten plus years and actually build a program to where it's now self sustaining and running without. It's been that great. You act like he's been married forever. Well, they've been dating a shorter period than I even realized. That's how good they were. They've really been successful though. And it really just brought in a burst of energy, a sense of belonging with macro and all the success that they've had in this short period of time. And now he just re signed what he do a four year deal or how many it didn't even matter. No, it doesn't, Paul. It doesn't matter in college sports. And that's the thing that's crazy is for all these years we've all heard, oh, they don't have the money, how they're going to afford to do this. Why would they pay players? They shouldn't be able to do that. I'm like, we'll look at all the dead money that all these coaches get. They pay coaches and everybody else, all this money, year after year after year, and it doesn't matter as long as they try and come in and do what's best for winning programs while winning football games. They'll spend whatever it takes. And it doesn't matter and nobody gets mad at the AEDs. Nobody gets mad at anybody else. It's all about winning. And at any cost. We've had a couple of callers today. I'm going to get back to the games ahead in a minute, but we don't have to talk about it. Obviously, see you a couple of times before. But there is a lot of concern about the sport. And I owe money, the portal, where some of argue we had a former coach called the other night and said, the portal is ridiculous. Basically, guys like Nick Saban, Ryan day, the top three or four coaches, dabo, whomever. They can just pick and choose. And if you're let's say you're the great receiver somewhere like Jameson Williams. Price young's got another year at Alba. Go there. Some people think that that's hurting the game. How do you view it? I feel like it's part of the game. You got to adjust buy that. Look, those top tier teams, they're still doing that in high school players too. It's not like it's just a transfer portal. They're picking and choosing who they want out of high school too. It's all about player development and understanding, all right, how do I close the gap and not just like how do I keep up? Because you're not going to be able to keep up with these guys. They're already 8 years ahead of you when it comes to growing a program. You're not even close to them. So stop focusing on that part of it and how do you close the gap? How do I get my share of guys out of the transfer portal. So now I have guys that are coming in and affecting my team in a positive way. And now we're seeing the outcome. Not only that. But the proof is also in the pudding. When you have a transfer guy come in like Jameson Williams and have an instant impact like Jameson Williams had more guys are going to tend to try and follow that track. Henry told toll doing the same thing coming right over from Tennessee, starting having a really good season for Alabama next you know, that is how you continue to get more guys out of the transfer portal. And also Alabama's going to do and have the ability to be able to say, you know what? We only need one or two guys. We need a speed guy. That's what they wanted to get. So they looked at the port and said, who's the fastest guy that's going to help transcend our offense? Oh, this one guy that we already had a tie to or connection who we recruited at a high school that did not choose us, but had us in his last final two or three teams. That is what you do. Not everybody has the luxury or the benefit to be able to do that. So you got to understand that part two. And woe was me for everybody that's always crying and saying that life is not fair that college football is not fair. When you know what? I'm sorry. It's not fair. And the winners always win and the rich always get richer in college football. And that's not change in Paul. I don't care what rules you change. People are going to bend the rules that people are going to do whatever it takes to stay ahead of the rest of everyone else. We're just getting Roman Harper wound up. I got more to go, Paul..

"My last two things are going to be advice for you. First, change, you don't go as easy. You don't want to flap every time you talk. And if you want to call in, don't change your diaper. Your best self surrender before you throw it away. Have a good day. Thank you, Paul. Wow. I remember when all Mitch was just a mild manner, sweet guy who loved calling the show. Now he's turned into a serial killer. Dan is up next in Tennessee, hello Dan. Hello, Paul. It's an honor and a privilege to speak to you. I want you to show every day and enjoy it very much. I have a story for you that is very unusual and I wish I could have done it yesterday on Veterans Day. But I am a Vietnam veteran. I served from 1967, 68. And was we our ship was sent up the Saigon river to see if they could bring merchant ships in during Ted. This was on February 2nd. Ted broke on January 31st. And so we got into Saigon and our office some of our officers went into town when it was in the city. And they ended up at a hotel near the U.S. embassy where they met a USO tour of NFL football players. Now there's been a lot of talk about the NFL in there. The controversies over the flag and the anthem. But I'm okay about these guys. And they came out to our ship. They literally came out on the sniper fire to come out. Our ship at Newport peers, it was Jack camp. Bobby Brown, Bill Brown, Andy Russell, and John David Crowe. And they all came out and actually as mentioned in Andy Russell's book, steeler Odyssey, he mentions it in chapter two, how they got there. I didn't know that partial I read his book. But we had pulled in to a city if you can imagine Paul coming through a major city on the interstate and that being no cars, no people, no movement at all. That's what it was like in the early morning hours of February 2nd when we came up the Saigon river. And it was absolutely spooky. I was up my station was on the folks on near the anchor and literally when we got to Newport tears, there was no body there. The army had not kept people there. So we had literally docked ourselves. Now the ship that I was on was called in LST, landed ship tank. And we operated in the Mekong Delta principally carrying troops and logistical supplies. Up and down the river. Dan, thank you, that is really a fabulous story. I really appreciate it and let's continue this conversation. Some other time when we have a little more time, but thank you so much. And I appreciate your service to this country. We are heading to a break a little bit late, but we have to get there because we have a busy show including a number of guests, including Roman Harper, he'll be stateside or set side in just a moment. We're coming right back. You were listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Brought to you by johnsonville. It's Roman Harper. And it's always great to have a Roman or last week Roman was being honored down in New Orleans. You made it here. You're a Hall of Famer. Yeah, you said it all, Paul, thank you, man. It was a pleasure it was an honor to be going to any type of Hall of Fame, but for me specifically in New Orleans it was really good to share those moments with my family. I really don't have to take great exception. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but Alabama plays only through the night before. And you get in front of the entire dome, you do it roll tide. I didn't even know you had that. That was good. You pulled that out on me. I did. But I've been there for so long in New Orleans and all the saints fans are LSU fans too. And I like to poke the bear because when they beat me in the past, they poked the bear right back. So, and I knew at that time, they were going to give me a standing ovation or they were going to clap at the end of my head. So they had to, so I had to just like throw it out there. Because they were going to be mad that they had to clap. But according to coach roser on, everybody was the better team last week. And he made one of the few times in his career. He made a little sense. He's not far off. They were really good last week. And you can tell they came off a buy they had a different type of game plan defensively. They had some really good things that Alabama could not answer or have the answers to early and even late. And for even LSU to come for that game to come down to just a 30 40 yard toss up for max Johnson to see if they can come down with the Hail Mary. Nobody really anticipated that game to be that close. And through all of those things being said, Alabama was still won the game. That was still 8 and one. They're still ranked number two in the nation. I didn't know that. Because on this show, Alabama lost the game. I don't understand Alabama fans. I love them. I love my people. But man, we live in this false sense of reality sometimes that wins all the time. They do win all the time and now they still won and because they didn't win by enough. It's almost like they're disappointed. It's still so many things out there. And if you want to, you don't understand this because you were a player. I don't. When Alabama and I was a player when we weren't that good, Paul. Really. And it's hard for you to remember that. I still have the articles to prove that I remember what people and I know gambling is remote, but if Alabama doesn't cover the spread, the fans are upset. They're angry. I don't even understand why it's so many it's a spread on every Alabama game. It's so ridiculous at times. But I look at it because I'm just a fan of the football team and what Nick Saban and this program has been able to come and build to and everybody else is so focused on all these other things. And if it's not how they want it to be, and these are people that have never dressed. These people have never played a game. These are people that have never suited up, and they're the most emotional about a close Alabama. Don't you go start taking shots at my people? My people are those who never played. But I value their opinion. But Paul, if you really want to know why Alabama's playing the way that they're playing because they are who they are. They've been kind of inconsistent all year long. Offense defense special teams. And the why because of that is they're playing with a lot more younger players than in the years past. But Roman. Nobody here at Tennessee or anywhere else is going to cry for Alabama. No, as alabaster and cry either. No, nobody. I mean, ladies and gentlemen, isn't it tragic that Alabama has a bunch of young players? I can't believe that. How did that happen with all those 5 stars? I mean, you got 505 stars on the roster. Tennessee..

"You back. A great segment there with Roman. Let's get back to the calls here at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 legend is next. What's going on, Paul? Legend, you've taken some shrapnel here this week. Yeah, hell. I mean, hey, congratulations to the braves. I was wrong. They kicked in the TO sto. I was wrong. And as a lifelong or your Friends at the bottom of my heart, braves, let me say. I could care freaking laughs. Who likes baseball anyway? I know. Do you want space going to Paul? I watch 20 minutes all year, brother. I can't stand the sport anymore. Do you follow that anymore? I watched last night but no, I mean, I grew up a baseball fan. I watched every game. I listened to every game and I find myself having to remember to watch the World Series now. Absolutely, Paul. And hey, I'm gonna tell you a true story. And I can prove this to you when I meet you next time, okay? And I will see you soon. That's a promise, all right? Absolutely. I was born in Annapolis violin. My grandfather James Arnold worked in the front office of the Baltimore coves from the time I was 6 years old till I was ten years old on a weekly basis. I talked to bob Smith, Mike Curtis, Johnny unanimous. Bill curry. That's funny. It was also a baseball player and a season ticket holder to the bottom of my home module. I was in the right field stands of the 71 studies when Roberto come in and he slid into the corner taking a triple away from Don buford to see on the solid game for the Pittsburgh pirates. I remember sitting in the stands and crying for 30 minutes after the game at memorial stadium. I say that to say this, Paul, I got more sports knowledge and my frigging little finger than red dog radar from South Carolina clown and half before on knit with the call this frigate show brother. And for folks that come on here and question my name, the legend. Let me tell you something brother. I've heard that recognize own this show. I've listened for 16 years four hours a day. I can't wait the two o'clock every day. I've been alone, brother. I want national championships on this show. I've won college of the year. I've been running up the Harvey up Jack hunt. Runner at the time the in college of the year award said, don't tell me. I ain't got to write to be called the legend on this show. You will say the legend Georges fan, and you will say it with respect. Because I tell them right earned it on this show. And nobody needs to be comparing me to an 8 year old child. I ain't no damn child, brother. Was it a child that stood between you and a mob and all of them follow one they wanted to kick your ass? Was there 8 year old child brother? No it was not. You saved my life. That's right, brother. But she looked pretty with that area to walk back to that ain't that I act like I made years old a time. I won't let that slide because me and you've been friends along time, brother. But you kissed me. I don't know when you did that. I don't like no child. I come on here with passion and I come on here and let my freak fly. Unlike most of that website is so actually the stainless reality from sports brother. Once you did that almost pimp slapped up big ears and make you fly around that studio like dumbo. But I had to remember brother that many of you are friends. And let me tell you something. Ray dog and all you other radio gangsters and Twitter gangsters. I'm a real team. I'll pin slap your ass from 60 yards out for a field goal for three points. And they announced her, we'll say, they were fired. That could have been good for me. No, can I got to put up this crowd? Bill bullet said, I may have sleep demo, respect the name. Legend freaking out. He's upset with me. I don't even remember saying, but that's okay. I'm sure I did. Augie is up next. Hey, augie. Welcome to our little family show. Wow, I was going to say you just teed up my next. Was that Disney friendly? Was that last thing that was not? No. Do you think you're going to get a talking to by some of the higher ups? I sure hope so. Okay. Well, I do. Pimp slap them. Just don't do it 'cause I don't care. Yeah. I didn't know if you were going to be how do you know you're going to be attacked at auburn Paul, where they're going to rip your head off or something? Well, it was. It was rather scary, but he and DJ dub stood it. It was a couple of guys who were drunk and decided that they were going to have me for lunch. Well, you saw what happened at the old miss LSU game, right? There's viral video of LSU fans and all this pledges getting into it. But I didn't say that typical for an LSU game, whether it's a road game or in Baton Rouge. That's just part of what goes on at an LSU name. But at the beginning of the show Paul, I noticed there were some volatile two words that defined AML and spun this arrogance and I'll throw in a third one incredulity. Do you know when reporters asking questions, the look in his face like how dumber these people and how dare they ask me such a stupid question, so interesting that sort of the key to coming back to Dan Mullen, but Mike rescuer Paul, I mean, since a natty, the Cincinnati was really believed they belong in the college playoff when navy, really had a last second chance to beat him. I say this about Mike arrest, 'cause I know Mike a long time and I consider his friends and respect for him. But because of that, I feel like I can say what I'm about to say. His act is getting rather boring. It's the same thing every year. It's not really authentic. And if you want to say, if you want to say that at the end of the year, but to say that after the first poll makes no sense. I mean, he's a one trick pony in the thing about it is Cincinnati can not do anything at this point to affect their chances of getting into the playoff. Let's assume they win the rest of their games. I mean, the best team they're going to play is SMU and they're like bumped down into the low 20s. So the only way Cincinnati gets in is not by their good deeds, but because of somebody else's screw up and they're going to be a number of teams that are going to have to screw up to get Cincinnati in the polls. But the one thing that I noticed that I am incredulous over, Mississippi's state number 17 is that legitimate I must say that was surprising, but they do have a win over Texas a and M and I think that's counting a great counting for a lot. Thanks for the call. We are heading to a break, whether we ever come back. I do not know. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Welcome Paul.

"roman harper" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"Hey, what's up with emery Jones? If you don't think that happened because the transfer report is real in living every single day. In today's college football space that somebody's gonna reach out and say, hey, you can still come here and play. You ain't got to worry about all that other stuff, and we're gonna let you play. And we're gonna give you the freedom to mess up and we're gonna let you be the best version of yourself. And you still got two more years to come out and play and do it for us. They'd be happy to accept that. And you just gotta be aware of these things. And I think Florida and Dan Mullen has kind of dropped the ball on this, and I've been harping on it for a while. And now you're gonna end up losing both quarterbacks because now Anthony Richardson is not available. Andre Jones is looking at himself in the mirror. Like, I mean, I guess I can play for you now. At least that's how I would feel. Because I still, as every player, you have a sense of competition about you. You also have a sense of pride. And you also have a sense of duty and that you want to be the best version. You want to be the best. And what all of a sudden you're not allowed to freely become the best player that you thought you could be. You're going to have some question marks. And of course, it starts to demand the mirror. But it's also like, can I have the opportunity as well? Talking to Roman Harper. We'll have a couple more comments on Dan Lok and move on, but he's in a really difficult spot right now. He made it worse the other day with the comment. And then they shut the media off, which I wonder Roman in this current world that players are making money through the media, what sense does that make? So the NFL always taught us that the media is your they don't have to be your best friend, but they're your friend. They are your outlet to the viewers and the listeners and that is how you build your own brand. So you want to have a certain link or a communication with those people because how do you control the narrative? You get it out there in the media. You control your own narrative, no matter what it is. In the same way, you can ask whatever question they want, Paul, and I can give you whatever answer I want to give you. So you control your own narrative by your actions and your words. Specifically, your actions. You can say a lot of things, but your actions back those things up. And that's what it has to be. Cutting off the media doesn't do anything. Now we're going to cut off all the distractions and we're going to not listen to the outside wards. Well, you know what? You create a lot of this on your own. So if you don't create these things on your own, and if you handle it internally, the best way, then you don't have to worry about these things. These issues don't arise when Georgia has both quarterbacks and everybody asked him every week. Who's gonna be the quarterback? It's not really issue. You can say it's winning too. But it's not an issue. It's not an issue. And every year, Alabama has another 5 star quarterback that's rolling in on campus and you don't you don't question when the goat says I got my quarterback I'm good. You just kind of move on from it. And so you have to handle these issues and you can't let them fester because this is also a way you can lose your locker room. Because you still got half the people that want to go for this guy, root for this guy and you still got another half that want to root for this guy. But internally, you have to be able to bring everybody together and say, what's best for this team, we have to do those things and cutting off the media does not silence those crowds or it doesn't silence the Twitter fingers that are now out there. And we know that's real because that's where so many people look at for almost like confirming their for literally. How do I know I'm a good player? Well, such and such from Twitter said, I had a great game. That happens nowadays. A lot of kids, the first thing they do when they get done and get to the locker room is look at their phone. And they go to their phone to see their mentions or see their comments. And that's what they're learning so much from. So you can't act like it's not there when it really truly is. And everybody's hearing about it. You just have to address it. What we're talking about here is I don't mean specifically because there's practice going on right now, but when these guys get done in a few minutes, they're going to get a lay of the land on what people are saying about their program. Is that true? Very true. And you can't run from it. The only thing you can do is correct that mistake and that you've got to go out there and win games. That is how you heal everything. You must win these games. And you are the university of Florida. When I grew up, Florida is it. And they're not a mediocre program. We can't sit up here and treat them like and I hate to knock everybody else in the SEC, but you're not Mississippi state. And you're not Kentucky. You are not these other teams. And Georgia and Florida for so long has been in the top of the SEC east. You can't run from that. You can't run from the name on that's on your Jersey. You can't. You signed up to go there. And when you sign up to play there, you know it's going to be the potential of pressure and everything else that comes with putting on a floated Jersey. That is part of it. You sign up, you know it, you have to go out there and play to a certain standard or you're gonna get these calls and people are going to say these things about you. If you don't like it, you can always go to another direction of school in somewhere else. You don't have to deal with it. But if you sign up for it, you must deal with it, and you can only dress the person and the first thing you always have to do is like Michael Jackson said is look at the man the mirror and what can I do differently to help this thing write it in the right way? We'll take a break. Come back with Roman Harper will change the school. We'll keep the heat coming though. I think we've exhausted that one. We are coming back.

"Interesting is the day of the Florida game when they turned it around, we were talking off the air that there were stories all over the place, a guy who didn't want to play anymore. I literally told you my friend said told me that LSU is about to buy him out. Before we go, I told you that. And then it happened the next day. And we look up and they won the game. I made more of an indictment of Florida. Completely because they couldn't stop him at all. It's not like they did anything different. And now you look up and they lose the old miss. And I just don't know. I clearly don't know what I mean. And I guess there's an end to all this and we'll end it here. They're going to Alabama next week. They're going to Alabama. And Nick Saban is certainly taking no mercy. No. No, he's going to try and put up 45 50 easily. And he remembers the last time he had always run was in that building. Yes, where, you know, everybody heard the quote and everything after the game and all those things. So yes, all that will not that Nick Saban takes things personally. Well, you will never hear about it in front of the camera, but I'm sure he's one of the most competitive people we all know if you actually know him personally. So he takes it serious and it's a highly competitive within his program. That's gonna be a big game in Alabama, clear cut a better team than LSU this year. I don't know if they're gonna be able to physically dominate them up front. But Alabama's putting a score a bunch of scores and bunches gonna be a good opportunity for Alabama to improve their defense have a great game. Build some confidence. "And that's the mental. Is that you gotta to play because when nobody cares about how much money you're making or how would draft pick. You wanna game kicks off. It's all about what you're doing in between those white lines in between those whistles. And i'm just trying to get every advantage i can so i'm talking to him. I'm talking back to him. I'm talking crazy and whatever's not looking. I'm pushing him to and when the game was over you just let it go. Let it guys see each other after the game. We did we kind of hash. It out and i'm i'm cool with very. I've seen him since multiple times. You finally quit the yeah my way. I'm good let it go crazy. I'm got have this with. I'm not like that. i'm such a nice guy. I didn't want to upset. You should not fall. You should not have me and don't try and upset me. An incomplete football. That's definitely not a good thing if i'd have known this out. Never trash you and all those newspaper columns. Oh now we can really talk about it. Because that's when you were really trashing alabama. What that is how. I knew paul finebaum. He was the guy that always has some dirt on alabama. Always trashing us and we were losing and i could just see your smile. Just imagine you laughing at us the whole time. You're writing this article and now we're winning and now you're considered a bam so it's amazing. How time heals all wounds. Tough luck have. Hey you guys were terrible. We weren't there are a long time. It's amazing look if we would have been able to score twenty points in every game my senior year. We didn't want every game. We didn't give up more than fourteen. Seventeen points a game and we still find ways to lose it because we couldn't score. And now i look at all the offensive explosion that alabama has. I'm joker defensive guy so jealous here so the offense is the truth. Our defense was good. Our offense is trash. And i love all my teammates but we were not good and they would probably admit the same thing you just called your team aged on the offensive side of the ball trash. We were really bad or one honest guy. i'm fair but i'm critical but honest and we were not good looking back on it and we had some pretty good players. But if you don't have the team to the cohesiveness go together with that. You got no chance of winning now. Don't change next week when we have you on. We're gonna we're gonna we're gonna facetime vernon in and settle this. Let's do it. Let's do it i'm down. He's played for very long time. He's a straight vertical route. Tight end guy and i love going against him. He was one of my favorite guys. Go against. Because i knew exactly what i was gonna get in how talented he was. And it's always when you're competitive you want to go and get the best and i love going against him. I love talking trash. And i love trying to him and just really get after the forty nine. It was a great match ups. The one and only don't get on his bedside roman harper. Thank you we are coming right back much. More listening to paul finebaum show. Podcast live in lexington on a friday afternoon and much more to happen here as a tom. Hart will join us in a couple of minutes. Which checking right. Now with. Taylor davis Covering vandy and florida. Taylor always great to have you on these friday afternoon. Shows good afternoon and Give us the scene set. How are you. I am doing well. Paul always great to chat with you as well. Thank you for having me Down here in gainesville down in the swampland getting ready for this one a homecoming game for the gators. And you know coming off. Quite a deflating loss to kentucky last week. And you know. I've spoken with several of the players and obviously the coaches this week and i. It was a tough one for paul. I mean as expected. Any loss is tough especially against an east opponent but it was the way in which they lost. You know fifteen penalties eight of those both starts we We spoke with coach mullen today. Who told us. Five of their drive completely halted because of penalties and really for an offense. That's kind of flipped it. Identity this year and with emory jones. Trying to get his footing. As the starting quarterback having halted in that way because of undisciplined football that it makes it really difficult to find deficiency on that side of the ball so frustration is really prevalent. They've got to flip the script but a homecoming game against the built. Gives them a good opportunity to do that until you were to mark stoops earlier and just talking to everyone here in lexington. They really feel like the crowd was responsible for those penalties. I know there's probably dan mullen wants to hear. It will be a lot easier to finally be. Let's figure out. Let's help us figure out the quarterback situation down there we know emory jones has been fantastic. But what are you hearing and in terms of expanding the reps for everyone's favorite backup. Everyone's favorite backup you're right. And they're clamoring to see more of him because of the star quality that he seems to have and look vanderbilt. Expect to see him a lot. I think we could to. Emory jones is starting quarterback here. Though and dan mullen happy with him. He says that he's really coming along. And anytime you're a first year starter. There's an adjustment period in your preparation. How you prepare. The starter is very different than how you prepare as backup coach. Mullen said he really reforms himself this season after game to having those first couple of weeks to really get those actual reps and see his role here. And even paul after the alabama loss and after the kentucky loss. I jones this week. Who told me. He's learning from each bit of this and his confidence is rising by the week. They want him to continue to grow in that by making sure. It's known that he has the rains. I do think we're going to see more of anthony. Richardson they know his ability. Especially when he takes off and run but told us. There's a learning adjustment that he's into fans aren't able to see it because you know in practices and meetings but he's learning a lot with this offense and until they feel like they're in the situation where that's where they have to go. It will continue to be emory and anthony. We'll get worked on you know whether it series or or just the flow of the game. I think that fans can expect to see him. But i also think they want to open up that half game a bit more this week and against vanderbilt defense. That's allowing over four hundred yards per game. It's a good opportunity to tried out. You're always great to hear from you. Thanks so much. We'll all be watching tomorrow. We appreciate it. Let's get back to the calls here at eight five five to four to seven to eight five. Tom hart who will be on the call here for tomorrow. Night's game will join us in a couple of minutes cash daniel. We'll also be here. In the next hour laura rutledge as well. Let's go to kyle in louisville. Hey kyle afternoon. Hey paul how you doing great senior again. The bluegrass thank always great. Having you back. I remember a couple of years ago when you were there for the The sweep of merck farah winning the breeders couple years ago. I remember that that was fantastic. Hey paul i got a buddy of mine and we kind of go back and forth and He's the big lsu swamp tiger boy and He seems to think that this is going to be coach. Chose final game tonight. And then mark stoops is going to be. The main guy voted in dallas. You next year. What are your thoughts on that. Listen i don't know if i believe that or not i do think Mark stoops is going to be in some coaching searches. But i would say issues. I mean listen. I mean i'm not. I'm not prepared to speculate on that job yet but i will say this is a mark. Stoops is definitely going to get some looks around the country. I i don't think that that should come as a surprise to anyone. Hey thank you very much for the call appreciate it. Drew is in virginia. Hey drew go right ahead. i'll thank you for all you do. quick question. I'm a huge fan of thursday night football. And of course saturday being the great college experience that it is but where do you think football college football and who is in charge of the decision making process of having football on friday nights and taking away from high school athlete with you on that ultimately television who makes those calls. There are certain leagues. That can't get prime games. Now as i say that the big ten has played on friday night know the. Acc is playing a couple of friday. Night games. I don't like it i think High school football in this country is sacrosanct. I don't think anything should be done to take away from it. Now you're asking me will once you go ask your bosses they're they're scheduling the games on friday night. That is true. That's not my. That's not my concern though. I'm just giving you an opinion. And i think it's too bad. Hey thanks for the call. Appreciate it very very much. We are heading to the break. We have tom hart coming up. Cash daniels will be joining us. "That you see. I'm trying to play up to the crowd here. That was the first thing that jumped out on. The tape to me was how many times florida jumped offsides in. That's all because of the fans. The offense align was not ready to handle it and next to you know minimum. They block the field goal and that was really the game changer. Other than kentucky didn't do much they did not look good and they have to fix that and i'm wondering do they have anything else in the tank. Can you find another gear. Offensively to still look explosive at times because right now their offense is severely sputtering going downhill from game to game. They have to have uptick. Lsu's going to score you. Just don't know how many points are going to be able to score. Roman harper is with us. We have many many more guests. We've already head coach. Mark stoops when we come back. We're going to talk to roman about the game of the year in the sec. In college station tomorrow. I'm reading an old script. I'm sorry we're going to find out what roman things jimbo fisher in the aggies right after this. You're listening to paul. Finebaum show podcast. We're back we're in kentucky on a friday afternoon. We want to talk to roman harper about the game and in college station tomorrow night. Particularly jimbo fisher. We all know jimbo. An extension extent dig. We were trying to figure out. It was a seventy five million dollar contract. Now it's like now he's making. He's on the fortune five hundred list just on his salary loan. It's about a ninety million dollar deal over the stretch of ten years. And i think it's guarantee i know it's guaranteed. I mean they fire him tomorrow. Here's ninety million. Yeah that's like Nfl quarterback money. Yes it is over three or four years and he's able to get it for coaching and making those decisions where his quarterback has struggled. And you just got a call. A spate of spayed jimbo fisher is supposed to be the quarterback whisper in his quarterback is really struggling and they're not playing up to snub or up to par to anything. Cows oughta missed a lot of passes last weekend. How do you formulate offenses to get him going. Whatever that may be. But you have to have a quarterback to be comfortable to execute offense and right now the offense that you run is not working off into lines not protecting. You're not getting the run game out of your two running backs that a really good running backs they're not happening and the wide receivers are not getting open. So you have a lot of question marks. If you're saying that you want to see answered. And i'm not thinking you're going to beat alabama but you need to make it close and you need to lane on that fans and had them going but if this thing gets ugly early has no chance to win this game. Did i say right. Showed exactly what i was thinking so if i if i forced you show you have you the class project is you have to tell me that. I'm i'm telling you the end result and you tell me how they do it texas. Am wins this game. Oh that means somebody from alabama got hurt and they. The backups did not play well. There's one guy that you don't wanna get hurt right. And i'm not gonna put it in the air like that so you know. And then they turn the football over eight. Had a big play or return game touchdown things like that something that you just don't normally see because you paul before the season started. I was the one that said. Am was going to be favored in this game. I thought it was at home. Cow field am coming off the great season that they had last year. They would just kind of keep that momentum rolling offense they will look the same instill pound on the guys and still run the ball efficiently and it's completely opposite going into it. Alabama looks a lot better coming off one of their best performances as a team performance. That i've seen them play since last year and their team. That's motivated especially last week. But do you come in sleepwalking. Little bit kind of you know reading the newspaper bins. I haven't seen him nick. Sabin has gone off in the media this week. He's been quiet exactly which is a little scary. So is he going to have guys going. Like i know he did last week. And everybody led up to it lane. Kiffin versus my nick sabin but jimbo fisher is an opportunity. Here is he. Is he gonna prove that. He's as good as his contract. Says he is or. Are we going to have more question marks because you look at the past coach. That was there in front of me at the same point in. Everybody's talking about that that he he has more men wins in jimbo. Does it the same. Very point and and to kevin someone's credit wherever you are be beat alabama to exactly. That was my point. He wa- he didn't just beat alabama. He wanted to tuscaloosa. Yes in next to you know. And they got a high johnny manziel. They really really just shocked the world that year you had mike evans come out as a great. Nfl player right now. So that team under kevin did some things that we've not seen under texas. Am and we're looking waiting for jimbo to do those same things especially when you give him the contract extension when you give them the money you're looking for certain return on your investment and certain results at the end of the year and right now is not paying up well. The football teams not paying on their side. Here's the problem for kevin someone. You mentioned johnny winning heisman. He hit another heisman winner. There the left heisbourg he did. He did great recruit but he didn't keep you the players and right now jimbo's doing a great job of recruiting and some of the players opted out last year with the players there on your campus right. Now how do you get the best outta them. Why mars agree tight end. They got to find ways to continue to get him. The ball a nice smith on a really good slot receiver. You got to find ways to get him. The ball creatively in not just saying. Hey we're gonna run these. Plays and then. I want my quarterback to give him the ball. Go out of your way to force feed these players. You're most explosive players. Get them the ball. The only chance you haven't win in this game you're sitting out there. you're waiting for alabama..
