Mary Ann Van Hoof and the Marian apparitions
Hey history lovers. I'm Mike Rosen with retro pot a show about the past rediscovered. Just before noon on August. Fifteenth nineteen fifty Mary and van hoof stepped out of her farmhouse in the Sita, Wisconsin. It was the feast of the assumption a date Catholics observe as the day, Mary Jesus's mother ascended into heaven, then then knelt before a statue of the Virgin, Mary, but she wasn't alone. Estimated one hundred thousand spectators had gathered outside of her home. According to life magazine. Niece spiritually fanatical and level. Headed citizens came from all over the country by a chartered buses and specially routed trains, there were around seventeen thousand cars parked on the farm. They filled that Wisconsin field to hear a message from van hoof who claimed she had been visited by visions of the Virgin Mary six times over the last few months and today, the Saint was poised to appear again. As van who shifted her attention the crowd hushed, then she spoke into a microphone and shared the virgin Mary's latest revelation. She urged the people to pray do penance and sacrifice. She issued a warning about Korea. Instead black clouds are coming to America. The pessimism wasn't totally unwarranted. The Cold War loomed the Soviet Union had detonated its first atomic bomb. And earlier that year Senator Joseph McCarthy said communist had infiltrated the State Department. The New York Times reported that van hoof left the scene in tears and while observers saw nothing unusual. The Associated Press reported that the faithful were satisfied and below. Believed the Virgin Mary had been in their presence. Van hoof was Philadelphia native who later moved to Wisconsin religion, scholars say she was baptized Catholic, but not reared in the church. Her mother, a spiritualist believed the spirits of the dead could communicate with the living. In the nineteen thirties. Van hoof answered an ad for housekeeper placed in a publication called Wisconsin farmer and agriculturist the ad was placed by a devout Catholic named Godtfred van hoof, they married. Four months later than who've said the Virgin Mary first appeared to her on November twelfth nineteen forty-nine the lacrosse diocese initially held back judgment fan who've saying it needed time to investigate her claims. But it took a dimmer view as the crowds in this Sita grew in pilgrims made claims of miracle cures. In nineteen fifty one van hoof was ordered to stop spreading pamphlets about her visions and to dismantle the shrine. She built known today as the Queen of the holy rosary media tricks between God and man she refused but the following year. She agreed to undergo a ten day medical exam at the church's request. Diocese officials condemned VanHoose claims in one thousand nine hundred eighty five but that didn't stop her followers. A new investigation was ordered in nineteen sixty nine and her claims were condemned again the following year still then hoof in her supporters continued hundreds of families from around the country up rooted their lives and move to new Sita to be part of the shrine community. They believed in time church officials would change their minds. In one thousand nine hundred seventy five the diocese called the group occult and placed van hoof and several followers under an interdict. Meaning they were denied sacraments four years later, the Bishop declared the group was no longer affiliated with the Roman Catholic church in part because they used clergy from outside the church, according to dicing records, then who've said she continued to receive private revelations from the Virgin Mary until her death in one thousand nine hundred four in her later life. She also said she had visits of George Washington. Abraham LINCOLN Joan of arc and others. Despite an abundance of claims of Marian apparitions in the United States, the first church approves site wasn't declared until two thousand ten it's at a shrine in the Green Bay diocese one hundred fifty. Miles northeast of Macedon where a young woman said Mary appeared to her in eighteen fifty nine. As for Marianne VanHoose shrine in the Sita. It's still open to visitors daily. I'm Mike Rosenfeld. "One of the largest Viking ship graves ever found"
Hi, I'm Dennis with Denison form, and this is the daily article for Wednesday, October twenty, four th twenty eighteen archaeologists Norway have discovered a rare Viking ship burial. National Geographic reports, quote, the sixty five foot long ship was covered over more than a thousand years ago to serve as the final resting place of a prominent Viking king or Queen. That makes it one of the largest Viking ship graves ever found in quote, this find is obviously remarkable, but having spent more than two weeks in Israel, I can tell you that history means different things to different cultures. A few days ago, our group visited Tel Dan where reviewed a gate that dates to the time of Abraham. We turned the probable side of King David's palace in Jerusalem, and we joined archaeologists and sifting through excavated from the Temple, Mount airy in Jerusalem. One of our group found a piece of pottery the dates to the time of Solomon. One result of the Jewish people's long and challenging history as their commitment to their nation. Twenty centuries of dispersion from. The holy land, and the horrors of the holocaust have hardened their resolve to preserve their people in country. They know they can't take their security and future for granted forces far more numerous or allied against them. Anti-semitism is tragically increasing in Europe America, and around the world. The holocaust is still a living reality for their people. The people of Israel live everyday and the reality of what unites them is far more powerful than what divides them. Therein is a lesson for Christians today on Renou in was a brilliant Catholic priest and scholar, his writings on spirituality and psychology have been very influential for me. I especially preciado his candor in describing the church and culture father. Now admits quote over the centuries, the church has done enough to make any critical person want to leave it. It's history of violent crusades, pogroms power struggles, oppression, excommunications executions, manipulations of people in ideas and constantly recurring divisions is there for everyone to see and be appalled by inqu-. Quote the father. Now in died in nineteen Ninety-six. He could be responding. Today's news, the department of Justice has subpoenaed at least seven of the Catholic diocese in Pennsylvania as part of an investigation into sexual abuse by priests. This appears to be the first federal probe of the size and scope into sexual abuse by US Catholic priests, the probe follows a grand jury report in Pennsylvania that found credible evidence that three hundred and one so-called predator priests abused more than a thousand children and six diocese since nineteen forty seven and other news. A new study reports that fifty one percent of Evan Jellicoe believed that God quote accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism in Islam, this despite Jesus clear testimony in John fourteen six, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. Jesus declared that his church would be built upon the recognition that he is the Christ, the son of the living God, and that the gates of hell would not be able to withstand the assault. Of those who build their lives upon that truth. Matthew sixteen tragically, for many of gels are relativistic, culture is more influential than the word of God. It's not surprising that our community of faith is less stable and increasingly fractured when so many have lost sight of our foundation, just as the Jewish people know, their solidarity is the key to the future of their nation. Christians need to remember that our solidarity is the key to our witness, Jesus prayed, John seventeen, that we would be one. So the world would know the father sent the sun. This does not mean that we overlooked in in our midst. The opposite is true. In fact, the prophets consistently identified and condemn the sins of their day, Jesus expose the hypocrisy of the religious leaders of his day, but despite the failures of God's people, it has always too soon to give up on God father. Now, in wrote this, the church is an object of faith in the apostles. Creed, we pray, I believe in God, the father in Jesus Christ is only son in the. Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic church. Now, in rightly notes that this ancient confession of faith quote does not say that the church is an organization that helps us to believe in God, father, son, and Holy Spirit. No, we're called to believe in the church with the same faith, we believe in God that is only possible, however, and so far as the church is based on the truth of God's word when our faith rests firmly in God's promises, we find solidarity in the fact that our lives are built firmly on the same rock while this doesn't mean an absence of sin. It does mean access to the effort present grace that keeps us in restored union with the father. Here's the key to being the church. Jesus intends us to be absolute abandoned to Jesus. Oswald chamber's offers challenging observation, quote God witnesses to himself. He cannot witness to you, but he witnesses instantly to his own nature in you, the spirit witnesses only to his own nature. In other words, the father speaks to the spirit who lives in us only when we're filled or controlled by the spirit, Kenny sanctify us and use us as he wishes when we quench grieve the spirit. By our sim, we keep the father for making us like the sun. And since the world judges Christ by Christians are sin drives sinners from their savior. The good news is that our risen Lord has defeated every force that has ever been aligned against him this week, our tour group visited the Israel museum where reviewed the sarcophagus of Herod, the great the tyrant who tried to have the baby. Jesus murdered nearby, stood the casket of the high priest who condemned him to die next to. It's too. Pilots tone, a monument displaying the name of the Roman governor who sends Jesus to die. They're all relics, consigned to the dust heap of history while more than two billion Christians worship. The one they tried to destroy history is truly his story. Now our father wants to manifest his son through us as the him asks, can others see Jesus in you. Thank you for listening.
