"Eastern eleven o'clock pacific so very few people in america were awake but my australian listeners were awake and they were the ones who are coming in and making commentary about the lives so for me. The live portion of the show was purely quite frankly to keep me entertained and to be able to talk the audience a little bit so it made an interesting dynamic but at the same time we have to really really make podcasters understand that. If you're going to do video you need to put a little sticky note on your computer monitor. Whatever you look at beyond your microphone. The reminds people that they're listening in most the audience's listening in the show image. Like i'm going to switch to mike. Mike doesn't can't see that you switched him because he just sees the master view. That if i switched to mike and i started describing. Okay mike if i now say why love that picture on the back of your wall while the audience has no clue because if i had not been doing video i'd say i'd seen this and mike. You got a nice picture behind. You looks like you've got a university of michigan hat. Maybe some you know little karcher going on there. That is descriptive to the audience to understand what i'm referencing. So i have to remind myself all the time and i catch myself because i so used to doing video now i catch myself not following my own rules and my audience and tells me a see that dummy. I don't know what you're talking about. And they didn't have time to go. look through. you know your hour and ten minutes show to find out exactly where so i could see what you're talking about so i think the future of podcasting has a video component for sure to this but i'm just it is an interesting bought process. Live video is big. We know light to people don't on gamers on twitch youtubers doing stuff so the videos big but podcasting is to truly define it as a podcast is to put the video feed in and are assessing closure. We don't do that for this show. We just only produce an audio show. We go live on the internet and leave it there but we don't now my personal show. I have a video. Rss feed and you can subscribe to that and actually get video on your mobile device that comes from a podcast delivering and it's really cool on the apple. Tv if you wanna watch video you know you can subscribe to video podcast on an apple tv. And i think there's some roku apps and other things like that and watch it just like you'd watch any other streaming service. It's gonna watch it like you watch a youtube video. Yeah yeah exactly and the cost associated video too because it's much much bigger file so anyway that's kind of commentary on the video thing. Let's talk about a best practice. And it's interesting. Mike you put in here bad podcasting advice. How do you know who to trust. And that's a hard one..

information putting in nothing like that it connects to your TV and then you can do voice remote and you have a full functioning remote is fantastic and end with your iPhone your your get the volume buttons on the side of your phone become volume buttons yeah this there is something that you can do called oh gosh it's called like something listening here's what it is if you want to listen to something you're watching on the TV but maybe your significant other has fallen asleep in you're trying to be mindful you can play it on your TV and then once you hit the remote listening it then just "Design notes on an apple TV service Roku app. Yeah. Just imagine. That for a moment. Imagine him imagine, Johnny. I have holding that weird ass promote with the fucking little loop on the side of it. And the headphone Jack on the bottom of the headphone, Jack on the other remote. And don't forget, the Netflix and HBO and Hulu Amazon. Just kidding. The crackle one Johnny hoping a remote in his hand right now. With a crackle button on it. I mean it incredible. That's what's happening. Right. That there's there's no other way they hit the skill that he they need they need. They need to get on the need to be everywhere. Well, they add airplay to it. Then they bypass the problem. Right. Because then you use your phone, and you cast sure is a very shady app that mirrors. I have a Roku, and it mirrors, my MAC book cost me ten dollars. I think it's called like Roku mirror, and they have it for like all these different apps. It's very laggy the play button. And then five seconds later plays on the TV. But it works for me. Like after I switched to amac with pro. I lost my each day my cable port, so I had to improvise, and I was like what slip? What's on that story? Let's see. And then there wasn't it. Works for me. So yeah, I think some people do and like the air play to home kit. You can be like say Syria play this thing. Presumably that work. But I don't know we have to see over Oku on the chest last year. And I was like why is your stuff ugly, and he's like his people don't care. That that combination of question, really? He's very much like book at the end of the day. People just want the video to play. Yeah. This is why people are used to Roku, and we're like sticking with it. And like, the hardware is cheap. And we're not going to overdo it, and like out all those all of those ideas are the opposite of apple which is like our office is a circle, and we built a garden, and you can't you don't know that you're in a city and also like we here's this theater that we only use for big events, and when we have other events we rent Brooklyn because we want to preserve how special the theater is in the middle of all true apple park. They have a pool that is perfectly exactly circular like down to like millimeter. And it's we keep comparing their billion dollar office building to to Roku. Pool is only like six inches deep or something right because it's a reflecting pool. And it's weird if there's no wind because it's too flat. And you want a little bit of moving in the water. So they built a crazy plunger in the middle of the reflecting pool. That goes wome. Whoa. Is true. Yes. That goes wome won't. This is now sized plunger in the middle of their flooding pool. That's designed to just sort of wait up and downs. True. Yes. Twelve inches. Maybe a little less Diener. I've been drinking. You could say anything is this true. Is a million percent true. I kid you built they put a hundred sub woofer in the middle of their plunger in the middle of the reflect said we were gonna take thirty seconds on this that may we've what makes ripples. So that it doesn't on the ripple plunger at apple part, and that company needs to make a Roku app. Just go look at a Roku and just imagine John advocating broken, I will make software for this platform. Anyway, that's happening. Tim cook cited today we talked about a lot yesterday. Deeter you spent a lot of time talking to Google I did about assistant whether doing today's the first day of the show floor is open here, you have Google houses. Open been walking through it. There's a small world ride. It's very jarring. Have you got on it? I actually haven't seen the the videos three sixty video. Yeah. There's a really long line to get in. And I don't feel like waiting this isn't Disneyland. Also it broke down for a minute today. Stuck in stuck Ngubane ride? We're we're on tomorrow. Because why'd you press the button his taping at the Google stage tomorrow. So we're gonna try going it. But you spend time with them talking actually about assistant..

"Twenty percent this morning, Tony. Well, that's good for me your shareholder. Oh, yeah. Okay. I've been for a while. I've been I've been a big fan of Roku. For a few months. Now, certainly today. I understand why you're fan today. Yeah. I might actually be in the positive on that one Roku is probably still almost down by half from its all time high just a few months ago, I'm guessing if it's in the thirty eight dollars or thirty five dollar range and think we were up in the sixties at one point. I didn't buy it there. But yeah, it is very interesting. Netflix was a big winner at the awards, right? And I saw article saying, hey, does this mean that things are great for their development strategy? I don't know that it does. I tend to look at the winner in this in this entire cord cutting movement as Roku, and I don't mean that Roku is going to put that looks out of businesses something like that. I mean, if you're looking for a company that stands to benefit from all the competition net. Flicks. Isn't it right because the competition is coming four net flicks. That flex may continue to do fine. But it's going to be it's going to have a big battle on its hands. Right. Roku is sort of the what's the word of the Switzerland of of online streaming right or they're agnostic. They have abs- for just about every service out there, and they are becoming kind of the default operating system for smart TV's and devices. Right. I mean, I my smart TV in my basement. Actually, I've got one what happens on smart TV's after a while if it's a proprietary smart TV, and this was a Samsung, so pretty big brand Netflix and others just quit making an update the apps for the smart TV. So they they only want update their Roku app, right or maybe they're.

"It only gets replaced every six or seven years. I think statistically the average TV lasts just shy of seven years. And so it's obvious answer that all of these things should leave inside of your TV. And yet for whatever reason we just haven't reached a point where it stays that way. Youtube TV is an example of a service that YouTube is aggressively rolling out, but Samsung or L G T V's. Made before two thousand sixteen can't even get to it. Right. Exactly. And for YouTube TV, which is trying to be supported on his many devices and used by as many people as possible, it makes sense for them to go to things like Roku, which has lots of boxes that people use or IOS or the web where lots of users can get to it, and these companies YouTube and others just don't have the resources to spend all their time updating old TV's with old software and a only a certain set of users which for them make sense. But for you as someone who bought an expensive TV expecting it to have cool features. It's just it's terrible. It shouldn't be that way. But you know, a lot of us have built into our heads to replace or smartphones. Every couple of years, it seems to make sense. But replacing your smart TV. That's a much bigger operation involves the wall the furniture and the whole deal, but to stay ahead of the curve, you've really got to replace your TV. Maybe even sooner than every seven years. Seven years seems like an awfully long time considering how quickly technology advances. And the problem now is that we've gotten to a point where screens are definitely continuing to get better. But if you buy a four K HD are Dobie vision, TV all these acronyms that that most people don't need to know our understand. But if you buy a very good TV right now, it's still going to be very good seven years. From now pictures are not getting that much better that quickly. But what's deteriorating is the software an independent? I wrote I describe it as like what if you bought a phone, and you could download all the apps you want. But then never update them again. And you were sort of stuck with a phone that that didn't get better over time. It just was stuck frozen in time. And when you're replacing it every two years that would be still frustrating. But when you replacing every seven years, the the out of date nece just starts to get really problematic. And speaking of the software, you make a good point in your column that there's a lot of consolidation going on in the smart TV content market, and that could actually benefit consumers. Yes. We've kind of seen the same thing over and over throughout the history. Of tech. I mean, I it was windows where Microsoft went to all these P C manufacturers and said, we'll look we build. Great software, you build great hardware. Stop trying to build this after for yourselves and just run ours. And it'll be better for consumers because there will be more apps available because it'll be the most popular platform, and you can just focus on building. Great hardware and that worked really well. And the same thing happened with Android where at the beginning of the mobile revolution. Everybody was trying to make their own software, and it meant everything was fragmented. And you couldn't talk to people on other devices and everything was just confusing, and then once we sort of segmented around I s and Android suddenly because there were fewer app stores. There were more apps in those app stores things ran better. It was easier to upgrade your device to a new one and the system just started to make more sense. And that's starting to happen in TV's now as Roku Amazon in particular are starting to take the softer that they built for the setup boxes and actually embedded in TV's and those companies. Because their software companies have a much better track record of supporting devices over five or seven years and net. Flicks. For instance, is going to keep updating its Roku app because Rocchi keeps making new

Roku reported a rise in average revenue per user of forty, eight percent. It also reported a five hundred twenty six million dollar private versus fifteen one five million dollar loss for the same time last year. The sun's coming out for Roku Roka's the number one over the top maker. Despite, you know what you might hear from Amazon and apple about their products. It is making a lot of money based on advertising now and services. So expect to see more of Roku, you know, they're not abandoning their their setup boxes, but they're moving a lot into being the default operating system for televisions and they're moving a lot into providing streaming services that is is sort of a a reverse apple and Amazon Apple, Amazon started with their ecosystems. We've got IT. We've got prime video now are putting them in our device by device and live in our world. Roka's like our world is open. Everybody can use it. Actually, let's also create a service around that open world that can push you into any free content that out there. I think it's brilliant. Have either of you used a Roku app in a Samsung TV or otherwise off a Roku hardware device? I, I have not. I have always used because they're so cheap and usually pretty good though the Roku devices themselves. Tom? Nope, I haven't. Yeah, yeah. Well, me either. "People who are trying to watch on their roku we had a roku app craig mining did a beautiful job of that but we decided roku changed their api and it was a massive job to rewrite and since we are on you stream twitch and youtube all three have roku apps fact you could find one or or all three on almost any streaming device you have so let's say it's youtube just find the twit channel on youtube and and you can watch us live right there so yeah they're still live on roku but just not through a twitter up just through one of our providers you can also listen live that's another long story that won't get into but we although i should mention it's at least with some of the streamers the syntax is changed i know with echo at least my echo at home i can't say listen to twit live on tune in i'll say echo listen to tune in twit live and for some reason that works so we're also working on the group issue number people reported that they can listen to twit live on their echoes but they can't listen to an echo group we think we know what's going on there and patrick and russell are fiddling with the knobs as we speak and that should start working in the next couple of days if you don't want to go through all this rigmarole we do have on demand audio and video and that you'll find it twit that tv slash windows download a copy of audio or video or better yet subscribe we have you know we're everywhere find your you know favorite podcasts player pocket caster overcast right tunes or google play or whatever it is and subscribe that way you'll have every episode the minute it comes out on wednesday thanks to paul and mary jo foley fine mary jo at all about microsoft dot com or cd knit blog you'll find paul the rot dot com that's his blog he also more than a blog is his news site because he's got other people there too not just paul and then of course his books are at lean pub dot com and he's working on the updated field guide.

"Fight so some of the features that the james likes ours you can link nearly all your available services that includes netflixing hulu prime hbo stars etc is right now it's only a web in iphone app you can pick up um your favorite shows as set exactly the season and episode what i just said um you works well on apple tv with netflixing hulu in history channel that kind of stuff and he keeps track of what episodes that you're watching it allows simple updating if watch shows outside of the app features that he doesn't like is it doesn't yet work with prime on apple tv he doesn't who doesn't linked to brit box which he says he may be the only subscriber and he says let it lets me linked to direct tv now but doesn't seem to use it for any of the shows are movies so there's a little bit of polish it needs to be applied there and he says no fire tv or roku app that's probably coming in the future and he says the apple tv app is only for watching no option a search for or link shows and movies a to edit services so he says things that he'd like is an option to create a personal tvguide so that's actually pretty cool isis a link to brit box integration of the direct tv now app and a full feature apple tv app so we do reach out to them to see if they would come on the show to talk about their service we haven't heard back but it's kinda cool that a third party is actually developing the app that i think the roku the fire tvs in the apple tv should have native early the absolutely should hey rain rokos kinda closed 'cause he could search across all of those apps but it's not it doesn't seem like is this well integrated.
