"Lash jamie's for any business right. Yeah getting we talked about earlier just the strategy behind it right. Is it to build your business or is it to make money again for me. It's brand deals in that kind of thing but if you're a business again the lawyer the accountant the the plumber like that that story all the time. This is crazy the fact that it's just being an expert at what you do in telling people that you know. This is what i do in helping them because a lot of times people don't want to do what you do they'll watch the video because you talk about it and they go. You know i'd rather hire you really wanna do it right. I gotta say the one thing about something like everyone really every business should be doing some form of live streaming whether it is on amazon for example or you know if you're just like streaming out to like youtube channel i know you and i we talked about the top. The plumber example. For example person comes to mind. Roger wakefield were basically started making videos about his whole. You know plumbing process. And then he goes live. I think he only goes once a week but he here's the thing. His strategy is prerecorded video and then he does a livestream like once. He doesn't live stream for example doing plumbing job or something like that rate because he wants to give you a very focused answer to something so for example he's gonna livestream for he was going to live stream like how to sneak a drain for example. Then like that's going to be a weird process right. He's got to have a camera crew with them all. That's where stuff instead. He has camera that probably some of that stuff and then he can bring that in as very focused prerecorded video because he knows that his audience is going to want to you know. Listen and watch that on their own time right but then he does the live streaming for a so. Then how can let's just think about how he could. Actually we've amazon's that. So roger free vice here by the way so what you could probably do here. Is he could. For example on his on his weekly show he could do a live stream out to amazon and have various products for example around his set and then he could be like. Hey guys you know if you're interested in when he has sneaker drain here are two different types of serta different Tools that he uses. Here's this here's this one. And then he could have that streaming amazon and have those products recommended in essentially a carousel. That shows up on the bottom. So he doesn't have so in this case you don't have to live stream the whole time. You just have to be selective about what you are pushing to amazon because they do want that shopping aspect rate if they want you to be talking about this show for example.

"That That we haven't hit on get another peeves like that for people out there that are that are thinking about hiring a plumber to come in like drain cleaners or things like that. What's your take on some of that. I'll tell you one that we do that. I think everybody should do whenever you have. Your drain cleaning. Asked the plumber. If he's got a camera. Can you earn a camera through there and just make sure we got it and this is something that we've started doing for people. We we carry a camera with us when we go clean it. It does two things and eleven right because it actually lets us video it. Did we get the the stoppage completely out or do we just push a little further down there. We just poke a hole in it by also if there is a break if there are tree roots if there is something like that we can at least show it to them pointed out to him and say. Hey look everything's draining rotten now but you do have an issue here and we may find a belly. Find a break. It could be anything but at least that way. We know that that we did get it taken care of or we know i look. We did get it taken care of. But you've got an issue here. This is going to happen again. And it's it's not if it's win. And i think that's such a big deal it really. Is it really is. That's just sound advice for everybody because that camera tells a story. I mean just when i had my house done and i was here for that. I looked at. And i'm like oh sweet. This is literally brand new looking cast-iron all the way out down to the to the sewer main that is gorgeous and i've got rocks and trees and everything else around here and it looked just absolutely beautiful and i'm like all right. I got a lotta years left in that and now i'm not worried about that anymore. I'm like okay. As long as i take care on the homeowners side of things on my is on my side. I'm good for many years to come with that. If i would seen roots or everything else and i knew there was a probably a track. O- or something in my future to fix that and sometimes that's the way it's gotta be it. Just it is what it is. Absolutely absolutely roger wakefield. What's the best way for people to you. "Was standing up for our them. I wanted to make sure that. I could see what was going on. I wanted to make sure that that was actually going to be the case and as he was doing it. I was marking out on the lawn. To make sure. I knew where that pipe was going and i was taking pictures of it with landmark surrounded the area so i knew where that line was going so we can track it and it was one of those things i was involved. In the process. I don't like homeowners hovering but sometimes when the guys got the scope outstanding. They're talking to him watching him do it. It's pretty hard to fake and be good at it versus somebody just coming in and showing you a picture of camera brother. You're completely right. And it's funny because the place that repairs cameras here in the dallas area is really really good. I've developed a great relationship with them. And i was out there talking to scotland and scott literally told me that somebody had dropped off the camera. One day and about five minutes later guy comes running back and he's like oh my god i need that flash drive and they're like okay. Yeah we'll look around what we'll find the camera or whatever and the guy was freaking. He's that's got my tree root video and he literally told them exactly the story. you're talking about. I've got roots on that. I'll put that in. That can show customers what they're any stopped. He says i can show customers what acer looks like with and i mean look. This guy's been doing this for your scott. So so he's like he's just looked at him he said it just blew my mind. I literally. here's what i do. And this is one thing that is great for your listeners. To hear i literally record the neighborhood. If i'm going into the sewer from the roof i show on the front yard. The trees i show me i show him the truck i show them everything and then go straight in their sewer and that way they know look th. This is my house. There's no doubt about it. And it's got the markings on there. It's got everything on it. So i can tell them. Look you know it. Dropped down twelve feet till hit the money then. It turned towards the front of your house. Because that's where you're to a cloud is it was a straight shot and i mean i document it and show him. I wanna make sure. And i mean literally like i mean. I'll video their backyard already on the front yard. I want them to see something to say. Hey that's my house. And i'll tell you another good story to on a house. When they noticed something. Funny next door..

"Were homeowners out there when you see that construction project that you want to tackle around your house and you're like how did that get so expensive. It's because that plumbing company that electricity is now making more than the schoolteachers are. Because guess what they went to trade school and they're in much more demand than those other people and free market prices means they're keeping those people employed and they're working to your house. You're the one that's paying for that and eric. You put it a good way. I've never really looked at it like that. I go speak it career days for haskell's and the counselor is always come up at the end and say well how many people came as like you know three four and they're like you know how how come what do you tell them. It's like what y'all they see if they don't go to college and never gonna amount to anything they see a plumbing company here and like i'm not coming over there so we sit there and talk to the counselors and explain the counselors rat now here in the dallas area kid congratulate high school. Join the union and plumbing. Just because i know those numbers yup start out at thirty four thousand dollars a year and five years from now. He's going to be making almost eighty. Yeah and the the counselors look at you like That's more than i make. Why didn't i go to trade school. And i can. I can give you a list. Plumbers that make over one hundred thousand dollars a year and that is more than most teachers make. It's a little bit harder work but you know. I don't know i debate that. Sometimes i don't know if i'd wanna go on in front of a bunch of twelve year old kids for for six hours a day and be working with them all day that that takes a whole other set of patients to me rather being a crawlspace to be honest. I mean harder physical trust visit true. Yes you know. I would rather stand out in texas in the middle of summer in an attic or something then set in the classroom we kids. I love kids. And i love teaching kids. I just don't know that. I could do all day every day. I love being out ma out in the field work with my hands absolutely. That's not my element is well..

"By making the phone ring so i've looked to do look at. How long did i want to take too but right now there are nine hundred thousand unfilled construction jobs across the united states and it blows my mind because everybody in the world lives in a house. Works building stays in a hotel goes to the hospital works in a plant traits. People build a repair. The world they do blows blows my mind. We've got that many open jobs. Yeah i mean even the highschool in my in my city here which is a non a suburb. Outside of portland oregon. One of the best ranked high schools in the state We're always in the top three or four. But they turned the trades program buildings that were in the high school into computer labs and stuff so they just have not embraced that they abandoned those kids and then across town over here. Probably half hour away from me. There's a high school program over there in forest grove. Where they have they build a house every year and they sell the house and the finances next year's program and these high school kids are building the cabinetry. They're and they're doing everything. They've got twenty plus years of of a successful program. I we just need to get that everywhere. And you're going to try to fill that need and i love it because you could put millions of people through that program and they're still going to be a void to fill the and there is an. Here's the thing about what i'm doing you know to me. This is what makes us different. And i've had people ask me all the time. You'll open shop seventeen years before i got in the union and once i got into the union. I rose took to form into superintendent. General superintendent. I rose all the way up to director of operations for a large mechanical contractor before i got out so what. I'm literally the into the trades program the the initial program. I don't teach them how to put together. I don't teach them how to pull wire. I teach them to get the mindset to put themselves in position to get the best jobs to make the most money talk always learn and grow. The bad thing is and i've interviewed a lot of people that have have a professional. Asan's me for instance. When i got into plumbing. I wanted to become a plumber. Once i got that plumbing lessons i s i stopped. I stopped learning. I stopped growing. I was a plumber then and that was my goal. The thing is there's so many great opportunities beyond that that most people don't ever even think about so my thing is how do we get people not just ended the trays but get them in with the mindset of look i can move up i can do well i can grow. I can either grow to a great job with the company. 'cause everybody doesn't want to own their own company. It's a lot of work. Yes but some of them do want to they. They're like one day. I want to work for myself..

"Welcome around ask there where we talk home improvement every single weekend. Thanks for joining us. I've got a special guest in the studio today. My brother from another mother. Roger wakefield plumber end trades now extraordinaire. Welcome to around the house by fred. Thank you for having me here. I appreciate it. How are you sir. Good man good. I see you every week. Doing your stuff on lincoln live which is great because i can find out what's going on in the plumbing trades and stuff out there but you have just literally been owning social media from the plumbing. Point of view doesn't matter if you're training people to get into the profession or help out homeowners to your everywhere and running a successful plumbing bill business in dallas texas. It's really funny. I spoke in front of a bunch of speakers last week. And that's one thing. The that p vargas the founder of the event talked about look people. Tell me all the time. They see me everywhere. And i started laughing because when he called me up on stage i told him said he just want want you to none. In the last twenty eight days we had nineteen and a half million video views on youtube and tiktok and he was just like late. That i can't even imagine that so. Yeah we're we're a started out with youtube and what we have. We've had people come up to us all around the country and say they recognize us and we started to talk about six months ago and now we're starting to get people to say dude. "Welcome back to around the house there thi this is where we talk home improvement every weekend. Thanks for joining us. We would talking about carolina been sitting in. We've been sitting here talking about kind. Removing walls and what to think about what load-bearing. And i wanted to kind of wrap this up in the discussion to really make sure that you think about your heating and cooling system how that's going to operate if that's going to affect anything as well as lighting as well because those are two different things that when you open walls up and make him into one grand space earned a bigger space. It's one of those things you need to consider because you want to have the lighting make sense and the heating cooling makes sense as well. I don't wanna see you create bigger problems and not have the the system balanced right. If all of a sudden you're messing with that by removing wall so you might have to bring in a heating and cooling specialist to take a look at the ducks and make sure that you've got you know. Sometimes it ends up putting a floor register out in the middle of the floor someplace where he didn't want it where before it was up against the wall. So you need to plan those things out people. Will you know we found you know. We had a duck. That was coming up out of the floor when we did some remodeling and it was ended up going out into the cantilever and it was coming up into the house and we had insulation coming up through the house because it was blowing in two directions. So you'll find all these hidden things when you go to police projects apart. You always have to have in each fat guy ready on hand. You should always have someone that you really trust. Because i don't think there's one project. I haven't torn apart something like a substantial project where i haven't had to bring you track in for some reason. So that's the the lungs the lungs of your home so it's important that the two worked together. Yeah i didn't realize how good it was to have a good system. Until i put this one in my house and it's like reduced my stress so much because it's just it's cleaner. It's efficient a huge difference on my electricity usage from It's it's it's it's a big deal when you get something that super-efficient and it's going to pay for itself very quickly compared to what i had before i'm like i seriously love h if i could go back in another career i would have been in each back professional like i find it. So it's it's really cool. I mean it really affects her whole building. Science and knowing your h house in my opinion should be built around your eight track versus what we do. Is we build houses and just throw an eight track into a closet or we put really little thought into the process of how the attracts gonna work. And it's to me the wrong way to build. Yeah yeah no hundred percent. I mean my house. We did a lot of change in and swapping around like we talked about earlier and it works really well but i mean it's you know we've had a week of one hundred degree heat here and that that heat my house didn't it just didn't blink took it so that's not cool that up to that you and i were talking between break here. You've got some lighting projects that you're looking at your house aren't you. Yeah so. I'm looking to put in some some new lighting in the basement. Not changing anything but just changing fixtures. Because you know stuff was looking kind of rowdy actually had one light start smoking and catch fire which was an interesting thing. No it was actually caused electrical fire so we had to replace them. But i'm kind of looking for things we were talking about the difference between the led's the fluorescence The incandescent and then we'll kind of options you have right now. we have an old fixtures. That's got incandescent bulbs. And i was talking to eric about the flush mount. Have these really cool. You know because we can't do a hi hat there because it would be more constructions on thinking like a nice flush. Mount kinda give you the look of a hi hat. without instruction cool. I mean first off. I don't. I'm not a fan of the fluorescence flash sense to me or out. Those are one there many times. You've got mercury them so that's not good. They do sell some work. Your free ones out there. But that mercury is not good if you break on and so i don't like those for that reason so led led most people can can deal with them pretty well. I know some. Led lights with certain people they will see a little flicker because their led light has always kind of flickering in in how they operate so that your brain doesn't detect it. You don't see it but some people are sensitive to it but that's you know one of one of a million but long story short with those. Led's they're great and if you get the right one with the light temperature you know the correct color temperature to it So you you know for instance. If you're looking at lights you'll see a color temperature of like five thousand six thousand. That's that lou daylight type bowl that you'd see you or it's that bright bright very white light if you look at more incandescent bulb that's caught. Let's closer to a five hundred kelvin. Yeah that's got that yellow. I prefer the yellow Softer tone like. That's why i always kind of just go away from led's. Because i just don't like that. Bright glaring light do they make fixtures. That kinda have that you can tone that down. So it's not so stark. Yes you can put in if you if you buy one. That has a lot of the new. The flush mount ones like the look like the can type light a lot of those. Now have a selector switch on the back of them now. You can select what color temperature you want. And so i usually go down into that like twenty seven hundred twenty five hundred range so it's a much more yellower light and then there's even bulbs out there now that you can buy think about in a led bulb when it dims only dims and this is what's crazy is an led dims cuts the light output down. But what you're used to in your brain when you see a a basically an incandescent light bulb has it dimmed it gets warmer. It gets brown or it gets yellower. You know what. I mean that that car temperature changes. So now they've got led lights out there that as the dim they do the same thing as an incandescent bulb in they change color temperature and as it goes down. It tricks your brain into thinking like it's an old incandescent bulb because it's it's making it warmer and warmer and warmer as it goes down so it's pretty cool. Well unlike you when you did your wine rack he put lights behind it. And then you had all kinds of color tones remember you did you do. You can do read you could do. They have all the variants with the. Led stu yeah it's great. You know might seeming kitchen counters. Well i put the lights underneath. There did that. Led strip lighting in there and that turned out really cool because we can sit there and football season. i can put my seahawks colors on their own. And you know that. So i could do all that stuff. He saints hawks folks in front of me. You don't say seahawks jets fan. Hey i have to appreciate the jets fans out there. Because growing up in the seattle area. I like my seattle mariners but my seattle mariners don't know how to win at all atl. Football battle come fall exactly. We're going to have a football battle. But anyway that's just kind of one of those things that you really you know need to think about when you're doing lighting in there so many cool lights out there I like the smaller lights. I don't like the big six inch round. I liked the more closer down to two or three inch because they make less of impact on your ceiling. And i think they look really good. There's a lot of great lights you can do out there. And they're so easy to install. You know what the problem i have is. There's a cut out now where these old because it was member. Those they were like four. What were they at three inches round. And then they had the incandescent bulbs were the traditional lights like the nineties. Were there so. Now you've got this whole cutout of drywall. And i just wanna put a replacement late in having such a hard time figuring out what can go there that fits well. That's all the time we got for this week. Caroline thanks for coming on the show again today. Thanks for having me coming up next. Roger wakefield the expert plumber just after these important messages..

"In can't become self sufficient members of society and if we can stop that cycle maybe get some of these greet people into the trades because we got millions of homes as shortage out there and not enough people to build them. We could team together and create something that would be excellent out there now. I'm knockin even pretend to know that. Have all the answers. But i'm asking you guys out there. This is your challenge. How do we all work together to solve this problem. Because i'm confident the people that we've elected into government across the country don't have the tools or even the desire to fix it and if you do stand up let's see it. It's come up with a plan. Fortas toss and billions of dollars at this problem right now and it's a joke because it's not fixing it. So how do we do this. Love to hear some comments. I'll posted up over on around the house with eric on facebook. Let's get that discussion going able to get some people together. Maybe we can solve some problems. Because i know in my weather here. I've got one hundred and twelve degrees here in portland on sunday and we're highest temperature of all time is one hundred seven. We got people die in this weekend. And there's nothing we can do to stop that right now. So what are we going to do for next summer. Next winter aren't everybody. That's the challenge for this week. Let's see if we can get something going. I'd love to see if we could start a discussion coming up saturday. I've got carol zaleski on caroline. Be she is my co host on saturday for our number one and then our two. I have expert plumber. Roger wakefield.

"If you've got a couple forty eight hours of a heat storm. You know where you've got wind coming in it's dry storm and you're in the hundred degree range. Be careful you're probably gonna lose power so then you decide what you're going to do for your house because it could be one hundred degrees outside and tell you what food does not last long and refrigerator when it's one hundred degrees inside your house. It's just not that efficient. So you're gonna lose a lot of stuff. Are you ready with a generator. Are you ready to go someplace. Because we're not just talking one little area. You could have an entire metropolitan area get shut down on power so there's no going to a hotel star localized power outage this would be a large blackout event. So make sure that you have got extra water. Put away the. You've got all these things to make sure that you're ready to go in case of emergency. I think this is going to be one of those years. We're going to see that ramp up and see a lot more of this. They've sure been looking at it. Testing it along You know across the west coast. So i've got a generator that can run for days on end to run my house. It was Strong enough to run my air conditioning and refrigerators not so worried about the about the water heater and the lights. I can survive that in the summertime. Even though it would run that but i i i'd be pushing it by running the water heater and all that stuff with the a c at the same time. But you get my drift. Make sure that your setup for this. Because i think this is going to be the year that we really got to watch out. Because for instance here in the portland oregon area where i'm at right. Now come out this weekend record breaking all time. June temperatures. We could be depending on what news source. You're looking at could be one hundred five. We could be hundred ten. I saw one hundred twelve. I don't know where it's going to be considering. What forty to. Fifty percent of our market has air conditioning. Yeah there's gonna be a lot of people as well as the homeless out there. So that's going to be its own little mass but make sure you're prepared. I'm warning you right now this next year or two not only. Should you make sure you have got a way to keep cool. But make sure you can stay hydrated. Make sure that you can survive through that. Because i think we're setting up. All it takes is one windstorm. And you're going to see power get taken down so be prepared for that guys. I'm too. I think this is going to be the time to get that generator or make sure that you've got the fuel for the generator and all of that stuff. So you're going to be good to go that way you'll be fine but make sure your fuel for a couple of days so make sure you are stocked up and ready to go that way. It's not a concern and then make sure you're staying healthy out there. Make sure in heat storms as well like this where we the wind in the in the heat and all that stuff coming in any of those kind of stormy weather summertime extreme heat conditions. Make sure that you're checking on your neighbors. Be a good neighbor. Make sure that that elderly lady on the corner from your house is looking good that she's fine check in to make sure everybody's doing okay in your neighborhood that way. Everybody can stay a little bit safer all right. That's my warning ran for this week on our mid week. Special coming up on saturday. We've got a fun. Show ahead our number two. We've been having a blast with that. We're gonna be talking about removing walls. If you want to open up that floor plan in your house what do you. What should you be thinking about. Oklahoma north south dakota any of you guys and even further east. I'm talking to you. Because i honestly think that we this is going to be the season where we really see. "And really most of the features now there are other milestones at like ten thousand. Now you get access to stories and posting on the newsfeed. Like youtube has a new speed. I don't know if you guys knew that. But you can't post to it unless you have ten thousand or more subscribers then there's another milestone one hundred thousand and then again at a million so there are these built in milestones. For example to get to monetization you need thousand subscribers and four thousand hours of watch time live video on youtube by the way although i don't you should build whole channel around live but doing lives once a week twice a month will get your wash time up really really fast. So that's important to know but that getting to that thousand subscribers is a huge milestone and. I think that that most of my youtuber friends will agree that the first thousand is the hardest. And once you get to that thousand like nobody gets there you know without some some blood sweat and tears and that might be a little bit of an overstatement. I know that you know. Some people can make one video to videos and they go super viral and all your subscribers come in in the first three months and that's happened but for the most for most of us you're going to scramble to get there you know and you're going to work really hard but what you'll find. Is that at a thousand. You know now your. Your monthly subscribers are starting to like double and triple right like if you're getting thirty subscribers now you're getting sixty. You'll find that. Youtube sort of elevates you into this new category of sort of like credible channels and they'll start showing or surfacing your videos to more people so it's at i've seen people go kevin colby shoutout to kevin you know got a thousand subscribers and was at two thousand within. I've known kill colby for years. It took a long time to get two thousand but then he hit two thousand like three months later right. Roger wakefield is another great example. He hit a hundred thousand couple of months ago and within a few months of that was at two hundred thousand. So get numbers up. So that youtube shows your videos to more people and also don't you know don't be so concerned about the subscriber number. The reason they got subscribers is because they had good watch time on their.
