"In Chicago's afternoon news. I'm Steve Burke trying and we're talking about getting back to business, right? They call it this lazy worker test the idea that workers didn't go back to the job because they were getting that extra 300 that's going away, including for 425,000. Illinois. And so what will that mean for restaurants in the Chicago area? Roger Romanelli is from the Chicago restaurant Coalition. He talked to WGN's on the day of Lantus earlier. What did you find out? Most of the restaurants I spoke with this morning agreed completely. There's one restaurant that just got a rash of application. I mean, A great increase of applications last week from an incredible trickle over the past three months, most of restaurants I spoke to do not expect a significant increase of people coming back into the restaurant workforce now that the unemployment benefits have run out as of yesterday. So there's Roger Romanelli. Terry Savage. How can that be? We were being told over and over that it was this big, fat unemployment check that was keeping workers home. Well, we're going to see. I mean, First of all, there are a lot of people that have other problems, so a big part of this jobs going unfilled is a skills gap. Second part of it is there's still some people that are very concerned about covid, even though they may be vaccinated. A lot of people in a certain demographic. There are layoffs turned into early retirement, and they're not coming back, and I personally think that a lot of concern about child care And even a single mother, of course, But families were impacted by the concerned about going back to work and uncertainties about childcare. And finally, I think, you know you're talking murder. I was talking earlier about low wages and the fact that, um many of these businesses are going to have to pay up. Which of course, could pressure inflation and well, we have been talking about that. The point. Is there a lot of reasons not to go back, but one of them might be that. Quote. I was making more money or unemployed in these low paid jobs weren't attractive and it was summer and I didn't want to work and now we're going to see the next three or four weeks of unemployment numbers. Of jobs, You know, new job growth numbers are going to be really interesting. 31298172 hundreds of telephone number. We've talked about this about whether this sort of reluctance or the slowness and Returning would actually result in higher wages and of, you know, uh, seismic change in the way workers are paid. I was looking at the jobless numbers from last week. Leisure and hospitality saw zero net job growth in August. But wages were up 1.3% for the month and over 10% for the year. 10%. That's amazing. And maybe not always together. Good, right? Well, you know, it depends on the glass is half full or half empty. This is an issue. Um, we've had workers. We've had a huge gap in wages between higher paid workers and the lower paid workers. We've had restrictions on immigration, where Some of the traditional lower paid jobs, particularly out west in the our agriculture. Um, they've been hurting for workers. So I mean, seriously going to be just fascinating to see whether fewer workers and the demand for them pushes wages up good for them that are working bad for inflation numbers. What if the Fed do them? It'll be interesting to see. Okay. I want to get Cindy on the line because she's called with a question, Cindy. Thank you for holding on. Hi. Nice to talk to you guys. He listened, Terry. I just sold the house and I don't have to buy a new one. So I have extra money. I worked full time. I'm not going to retire for at least five more years, so I put as much as I possibly can into my 41 K. Do you have a young son who's in college? A daughter who's in college? I want to get the best bang for my buck. Um, you know, I'm not looking to get to produce a rich, but I don't want to start spending my money. Okay, I'm going to ask you the question. I ask everybody who who asked me this question about where do I get more burn more, You know, bank CDs and money markets are paying next to nothing. The first question. I'm gonna ask you is how much of this money are you willing to lose? None. Okay. There you go. There you go. All right. There you go. Now. I'm just going to presume you've been contributing near 41 K and for one case have choices that revolve around stock market growth funds and so forth, So I'm just going to make the presumption that you've got some exposure to the stock market. Yeah, and I'm glad you have extra money left over. But and it's very painful for me to say to people go to a bank and put it in the CD that's paying a quarter represent, but interest rates are starting to inch up. With or without the fence. And so I think you're going to see higher interest rates and I would tell you to keep it liquid. If you're looking for the best rate, there's a website called depending on how much money you have Max my interest. Dot com and it directs your money to online banks. FBI insured to pay the highest rates, but it's still not going to make a huge difference. Yeah. Thank you so much. Good luck, Cindi. Hey, Terry. I'm sure you've been following the stool. We're tracking the weather today. Lawrence got another warning for us. After about an hour of calm. Now, the national weather Services issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern Livingston County, Southwestern Will county southern Grundy County in western Kinky Key County until 6:30 P.m.. So that's you know, part of Kentucky Bourbon A and Bradley so again until 6 30. Thanks very much for that. Lauren, stay on it and keep us posted. I really m fascinated to see how this is gonna end up now We got a text from one person who says I retired a year early because of Covid. So there's a worker out of Someone who said they're very happy that this extended unemployment is ending because they've been in an office And they say that that the ladies they want people to get off their lazy butts and come back and help her in the office, So we'll see if they go back. One more When I applied for unemployment, the required job search was waived. During this time, when will it be required to start up again? Do you know the answer to that, Terry? No, the actually the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The one thing it's really focused on now is getting people. To commit and prove that they are hunting for work. In fact, here's another. You know, me and the I D s there the worse than and they sent out a big bulletin, saying some ideas officers are reopening for in person number one. None of them were in Chicago. There's one in Tilson and there's one in wheeling and the rest of them were all downstate. But worse. I read this whole press release. Okay, They're going to open up. No, they're not opening up by the way to help you solve your problem. About that. So, um, I d s is now focusing on making sure that people who are still collecting benefits are certifying correctly that they're searching for jobs. That's the great Terry Savage. Check out Terisa vigil this week and Thanks, Steve. It's Chicago's afternoon news. We're going to head into the Northwestern medicine newsroom coming up..

My No. There's some aldermen that won't but I think that many aldermen are going to do the right thing. I don't know how you justify the largest pay increase in 15 years to your constituents. When many people have been struggling to find work, struggling to pay their bills struggling to keep afloat, Lopez was a guest on the Ana Devlin to show Federal unemployment benefits related to the pandemic are set to expire soon. Some were hoping it would boost the restaurant workforce, which is currently suffering from shortages. Roger Romanelli of the Chicago Restaurant Coalition says that Spike isn't coming most restaurants I spoke to do not expect a significant increase of people coming back into the restaurant workforce now that the unemployment benefits have run out as of yesterday, he says he's heard of just one restaurant that saw a wave of applications come in, but says many former restaurant workers have moved on. "As well. I know the audience to use his, uh, either potato starch based utensils or corn, starch based utensils. You know, utensils that are biodegradable. That's where the city should be helping restaurants go green. So, for example, if a restaurant decides to convert to biodegradable utensils, the city could give those restaurants grants. But certainly I do like the idea of encouraging people to tell me ask for utensils if they need them. The thing, Anna that You know, we want to support neighborhood festivals as well. That is an area that our association has been calling for biodegradable materials for a long time because we love our neighborhood festivals in the restaurants participate, but and I've run a couple of those festivals when they're over. And everybody's gone. We have so much garbage. It's like 1000 Christmas mornings. So I like the idea of going green. We got to go green. Yeah, Somewhere. Everything is moving and the nice part about this is they're not going to come find you as you point out or struggling restaurant because they put a plastic fork in your bag. They just sort of sort of setting the the tone that this is how it's a good idea to operate. So if you if a customer requests it, go ahead and toss it in the bag. But don't just load it up with a bunch of plastics. Unless they do, I think Personally when I'm bringing it home, you know you don't need that stuff and I just don't feel like I should check in the bag and give it back to him. The big issue. I want to put on the table, though on the radio, this opportunities that Hannah I'm hearing from restaurants that customers are still a bit afraid to either come to the city from the suburbs or Spend too much time at night out there in the city. We've had some really, really unfortunate crimes as you know. And so our association has been talking about Look. Let's get people away from crime. Let's offer them $15 an hour to go into a job training program, maybe a job training program where they can then work at a restaurant. But we got to solve the crime problem. We've got to squarely address it. This business of lakeshore drive. Nobody should be talking about this right now. We should be focused on crime and helping our small businesses. And helping our residents. I am shocked that anybody would be talking about lakeshore drive right now at all. Yeah, I agree with you. There are so many larger issues doesn't mean they can't do all of it. But let's talk about the things that matter to at first. I mean, what do you think of that idea, though, if we paint people $15 an hour to go take a job training class to become a chef or become an assistant. Then we get him away from crime. You know, we offer him real money from the cities to fund or the federal covid fund. Yeah, because you see some some of these crimes they're scaring people. And you know I can't. We don't blame the customers, but It's a balancing act in our city and again we We really just encourage people to look Take a moment. Walk around your neighborhood. Look at the business. You have support your neighborhood businesses. And if you do if you have any question you feel uncomfortable going out to a restaurant or you see something that you don't like sanitary wise. Contact our coalition, you know, let us know if you're uneasy about anything. You know about any restaurant operation? I think people are still little have a little trepidation of going back and indoor dining. We really want to get over that hump. Yeah, I hear you, Roger. It's good to get the update from you. "In Chicago. Everybody this is is a kind of Ah moment with very challenging, but it's a moment. Help us understand. We're all connected. So if people out there who want to help restaurants Do well continued it stay say, follow the regulations. Make sure that You're not being you're responsible with any behavior wearing your masks and then hopefully by Mother's Day, you know people can go into the restaurants in a very safe way, hopefully will be upto a real high occupancy. And then we can all share in the new era of celebrating life. But being a little bit more safe than maybe we were in the past, you know, And I think this is a positive advancement not only for everybody But for the restaurants, too. Awesome stuff. What's good here and from you, Roger, and I'm glad that you got this sort of relief, maybe more around the corner. Who knows? Well will will keep a quick I will keep a close eye will keep you posted. They want to talk about restaurants. Another announcement from the mayor. We just got one A few days ago, We talked to Roger Romanelli. Then now we're gonna talk to him again. He's with the Chicago Restaurant Coalition executive director director of the Fulton Market Association. Roger. How you doing today? Yes, I am doing very well this afternoon, Anna. Thank you for having me on the show. Thanks for being on. Hey, So it's good news. It's Ah, losing it up yet again. Where are we now? And are you happy with this or I'm sure you have with the direction things are going. But what would you say about what's being big announcement? Yes. Thank you. I am happy in the direction we're going, But I do think today's announcer was essential. You know, when you have bowling alleys at 40% movie theaters where people are eating and drinking, you've got to bring restaurants at least up to where the bowling alleys were. So I'm pleased with this announcement. The coalition and the restaurants participating. We're pleased. However, we need to continue to move forward with the city and Anna. The process has been very hard to get to this point. It's been very hard and it's been a new and more challenging process, which I'm happy to describe. Yeah, well, describe the force. What are you hearing from folks is I know you You're very much in touch with the restaurant community or hearing from folks. You guys talk to each other. What's the experience Been like, What's it like now? Yeah, well, for all your radio listeners, imagine your typical restaurant and your typical restaurant seats about 80 people. Okay, And so at 25%, which was yesterday, they could see it about 20 or so Now, today, they're up to 40% so they could see about 32 to 35. So we're not talking about that that much of a difference. Help these restaurants survive because once they opened the doors, they gotta pay heat, electricity and You know their employees, so it's like, you know, Once they open the doors, they really need to be able to see it more customers in a very safe way and and the other issue is to get 40% today, the mayor said. While the hospital beds have to be at a moderate rate, and the total citywide cases for covert after being a moderate, you know, we just don't agree that restaurants survival has to be linked out. The whole city is doing in terms of, you know, battling the covert virus. I mean, you're talking about Thinking restaurant operations to how many people how many new cases there are hospital beds. That's that's all brand new and we don't we don't agree. Yeah, I know that you don't And you've talked about the date on the show before. I wonder. Is this the results of your lobbying efforts or is this they surely kind of making these these decisions independent of that that they're loosening the restrictions now, is it? Is it purely on that data you just described Or they listening to you folks. Well, it's good question. You know, for all your listeners. Whenever Chicagoans come together, you can definitely have an impact on City Hall. And I think our coalition it's a brand new first time City of Chicago Coalition has brought people together all the restaurants. As opposed to them competing, but we do need more cooperation with City Hall. We want someone from the mayor staff to join our Monday calls at two o'clock, which everybody from the public is welcome to join. Her book, eat, Drink and succeed and Forgot to tell you that, um Roger Romanelli is joining us and Roger You are the with Chicago restaurant Coalition that newly formed coalition to try to Advocate for the restaurants to get reopened again. You're also with the executive director of the Fulton Market Association there, you know, it's interesting. Last time you talked to us. I don't know, week ago. You know, you said what we're going to. We're gonna We're gonna talk to the mayor. And we're going to convince the mayor to convince the governor to get some sort of indoor dining and do it soon. And sure enough, it wasn't But one or two days later, I thought when you get off, I'm not kidding, right? Roger? I said, Well, okay. All right, good luck. And then all of a sudden the headline started coming and I'm like this could really be happening. It looks like it. How's it look to you? And I really appreciate you giving us an opportunity to talk about this issue. I really do. I do think that our group had an impact. Know what it looks like The US is It looks like the governor adjusted one of the One of the parameters you're late to the hospital beds or hospital bed use in order to try to get Chicago into our dining to be restored and make the requirements more reasonable. So I definitely think I think we had an impact there, but certainly we're not. We're not resting on any Rushing on any world right now We're going forward to continue to make sure that indoor dining opens that it's cooperative and that we don't get shut down again. Okay. So what? What are you hearing? Because when I When I look at the sort of the media landscape they're saying within days, it looks promising. It looks like it's happening. Maybe even by this weekend. We should sweet could see some sort of indoor dining in restaurants. Is that the kind of time line you're you're thinking. Yeah, I'll tell you exactly what I know and what we're doing. I just emailed the mayor's staff who we had two conference calls with in December. I asked the mayor staff please let us know what date you might be expecting what the status of this is because restaurants need advanced time You could imagine, right. They've got to talk to their suppliers. They've gotta get their employees back, so the restaurant's really do need some lead time. We haven't heard back from the mayor's staff, but we certainly hope they'll respond. We hope we have another call. Um, I'm seeing the same thing that you're saying. I'm looking at an article right now. It's Chicago dog eater dot com and I'm looking at that. Look, they're thinking any day now. One thing that is very encouraging. I'm looking on the city's website the positivity rate in the city of 7.7%. Right. And so what? Our understanding is that Before at below 8%. Or an extended period of time, then Chicago can go two tier one. And then indoor dining can resume. At 6.5%. Indoor dining can happen more frequently, or there could be more more in their dining allowed, but and I think you're right. I think we're on. We could be on the cusp of something very good right here, but we don't have a specific date. Frankly, my eyes kind of glaze over When I hear Tier one face to all those I lose track of what All that means, and I've seen charts for sports. I've seen charts for restaurants, but at the end of the day, I just feel that there's a real sense that there's some sort of immediate or very short term kind of resolution to this that there will be endured Dining Would that be 20% or what would be the capacities? What would be the new rules moving forward? Right. And what we're hearing is 25% and other regions right in other regions of the state, apparently in Carbondale, Springfield Champaign. They're letting restaurants I believe right now already. Go to 25% capacity, which is, you know, we we talked about 20% because that's what the university study said. But certainly we welcome 25%. The other issue we're in the governor is he only wants four people to sit around the table. S so we'll have to bet that we're having a Chicago restaurants. Coalition Zoom called tomorrow with our members were still encouraging. Everyone around Chicago loves restaurants. Go sign our citywide petition in Chicago Restaurant start ord. We've already gotten about 400 signatures. We've got voters and restaurants all around the city. So to respond your point and it looks like 25% maybe seating tables at four. But I think that The critical issue. Anna is we cannot. We have to have government participation with restaurants if covert spikes again. I've got to talk to our restaurant. We can't just shut them down again. Restaurant can't be seen as a scapegoat to solve the city's whole covert crisis. You talked about that you pointed to the data, and you said that cheer you well, from what you've seen and what you've been able to assemble that it doesn't seem as if you can trace really a lot of cases back. Tell us that information again. Again. It's definitive. In our view, you can't because we made a freedom of information request to the City Health Department. "That's cars with a K. I want to talk about something going on right now. With the restaurant community. There's a new coalition formed the Chicago restaurant Coalition with E. Major major idea here is that they would like to see the restaurant's open. They think it's time they'd like to appeal to the mayor and governor. Please open things up, at least in some capacity. Let's learn a little more. About what what it is. They're trying to do and how successful they are doing it so far. This is Roger Romanelli. How you doing? Roger. Good hearing from you. And a great hearing from you. Thanks for having the time. Of course. I've been hearing from you throughout this and there've been so many struggles within your community. I hear I hear you Now, when you say that Look, we were past the holidays. It's been what 12 days of January. Now guess things. They're sort of moving in the right direction. And you'd like to reopen. Tell us about this, this press and what it is you're doing and how it's being received so far. Absolutely. And we think every WGN lists and are supporting restaurants over the years and we hope to have you back indoor dining real soon. The bottom line. And is this The mayor's telling us That the governor Is holding back our restaurants because the governor wants Chicago to get down to a 6.5% positivity. Right? Right. Got that. We're a 10.2 Inch city. I believe right now. That's right. We're a 10.2 today. The mayor says the governor wants 6.5. Now we're asking the mayor today. These go challenge the governor. We cannot put the entire weight and burden of covert and are all city. Are 7000 restaurants. We can't discriminate against restaurants. And blame him for a problem that they didn't cause. And there's no evidence in Chicago. It identifies the restaurants. Spreading this virus in a significant way. I know you've come on and talk about the data quite a bit. The Northwestern University study of cited that the Department of Health here in Chicago, their own their own data that just doesn't seem to link back to restaurants when it comes to these spreader. Events, you know? So what is it you're asking Do you want you want 20% capacity is is that he asked here. Yeah, they ask is very similar. The university studies said restaurants a 20% can be very safe. So what we're saying now is look Friday, January 29 should be the date to get restaurants to 20% indoor dining. You can't do outdoor dining anymore because it's freezing outside. They're all competing against each other for take out and delivery. And all the restaurants are losing together. And then we're seeing Indoor dining in all these suburbs around the city. And these restaurants. Taken away business. That would normally go to our Chicago restaurants. It's just It's very unfair right now, and we need to get that 20% indoor dining by Friday, January 29th You're saying about two weeks. You'd like to see that happen. It seems like a reasonable request. It seems that the restaurant community here in Chicago at large has been very responsible about creating safe environments. You've had some out liars. You've had some folks, but in general, I hear you When you say that we've been trained for this. We have to take health and safety training. We know how to do this. And so you sort of have that. Already in your background. I just I wonder what is the stopper with the governor and the mayor? What are they saying? At this point in terms of hearing your ask and saying will grant it As of last week, the mayor staff emailed us. They told us everybody's gotta wait until it's 6.5%. We said, What date do you think you have in mind? He said. There is no date. So we decided we need to force the question and Hannah Here's the Next piece of it. If the governor Will not agree with the mayor in the aldermen that we've got to get into our dining to 20%. At least But these restaurants Make enough money to pay basic bills. Then we need the mayor. Start coordinating a state wide effort of all mayors. Sit down and negotiate with the governor. The mayor's on this group called the Metropolitan Makers Mayor's Caucus. Hey, with a third largest city in America. If the governor won't come to the table, we need the mayor to coordinate a statewide effort of mayors. Mm. It'll be interesting to see what happens there. I just have a few seconds left Roger, but I do want to ask you about this. I'm sure you saw Governor Cuomo's tweet yesterday that set off a firestorm among small business owners and restaurant owners alike. We simply cannot stay closed until the vaccine hits critical mass. The cost is too high, he said. We will have nothing left to open. We must reopen the economy. A lot of folks looked at that and said Hey, Where have you been? Governor? We've been trying to that. That's exactly what we've been trying to advocate for for all along, but he certainly seems like a reversal in course. For the governor of New York. Yeah, the governor of New York his hair of very checkered record with dealing with the covert crisis. And so we're focused here on Governor Pritzker and the mayor and what we're saying to the governor and the mayor is If you don't have dad up. That that collect that shows that the restaurants are causing a problem. You've got to let them open up. And the other piece and a real quickly is we've got all these illegal parties going on. People want to get together. If we can get restaurants, a 20%. We can have safe gatherings, managers and employees can make sure everybody following the rules. And we can stop the spread. Restaurants can be part of the solution to stop describe. I hear you, Roger and I always appreciate you coming on and keeping us posted. Okay, Keep us continue to do that for us, okay? Thank you And I have a great day You two That's Roger Romanelli Chicago Restaurant Coalition, newly formed coalition. In.
