Super Bowl XXXIX Recap: Patriots vs. Eagles

"The game we most fans remember. Andy Reid foremost is super bowl. Thirty nine and especially how the game finished up in the last six minutes. But let's set things up here just a little bit coming into Super Bowl all thirty nine. Both the Patriots and Eagles were the best teams in their conference. Both number one seeds both had tremendous seasons. The Patriots went fourteen and two that season season as they were looking for their third super bowl title in four years. Obviously Tom Brady was just beginning his run as the greatest quarterback of all time but he'd already established himself as a two time superbowl champion. And so the odds were stacked against the eagles a little bit in the Super Bowl although the eagles were far and away the best team team in the NFC that season having gone thirteen and three really they were essentially a one loss team. They lost to the Pittsburgh steelers in the middle of the season but they had clinched the number for one seat in the conference with two games left in the season and basically didn't play anybody in the final two games and that's why they went thirteen and three. The Eagles probably could have been a fifteen in one team if they'd actually played their starters in the final two games of the season but thirteen and three is nothing to sneeze at and it was certainly good enough to get them the number one seed in the playoffs The Eagles defeated the Minnesota Vikings rather handily in the NFC divisional round and then in the NFC championship game. As you heard me talk about on the last edition of BG and memories when we took a look back at the ten greatest moments in Eagles NFC championship game. History when they dispatch the Falcons pulling away in the second in half winning that game. Twenty seven to ten on New England also had a pretty easy time in the postseason. They won their divisional round game against the Indianapolis Colts. It's twenty two three and then they won the AFC title against the steelers. Forty one to twenty seven. Bill Belichick Charlie. Weis the offensive coordinator at that time for New England Oakland and on the side. Of course you had Andy Reid calling the plays and Jim Johnson The defensive coordinator at the Blitz Happy Defensive Coordinator one of the big story lines. The the biggest story line going into Super Bowl thirty nine was of course the health of terrel owens who was hurt against the Dallas cowboys a few weeks before the end of the season He had A. He broke his leg on a horse collar. Tackle that has now been deemed illegal because of that hit but as the game started getting closer it started to appear as though Teo Jio would be able to get on the field and Tara loans for the Eagles in two thousand and two thousand four was the difference. He took the eagles from being a very very good team. Urine in your out to an almost unbeatable team That season in fourteen games really was just thirteen games because he was hurt early in that game against the cowboys he caught seventy any seven passes for twelve hundred yards and fourteen touchdowns for the eagles that season for the first time in his career. Donovan mcnabb had a true number one receiver seaver to throw the ball to but the eagles offense performed quite well whether well without Tara loans in the two playoff games but to beat the Patriots it was clear the eagles goals. We're GONNA need him and he managed to get. He managed to get back in time six weeks after surgery to repair his broken right ankle. He was on the the field for the start of Super Bowl. Thirty nine Donovan. mcnabb had his best season. An Eagle in two thousand and four mostly because terrel owens was on the outside and he and mcnabb was outstanding in two playoff wins against the Vikings and the Falcons mcnabb had always struggled in those NFC title game but he played very well against Atlanta Atlanta. One or the other storylines that Freddie Mitchell was running his mouth. He came into the game talking a lot of smack about safety Rodney Harrison telling Harrison that he he was gonna have something for him and then in the game you know Freddie Mitchell caught one pass which late in the fourth quarter and Harrison had Two interceptions as we'll get to here in just Dominica and of course the Patriots were looking to officially become a dynasty. They had beaten the rams had upset. The Rams in the Super Bowl three years before they had failed to get back to the super bowl the year after that. But in two thousand three or just after the two thousand three season they beat the Carolina Panthers and one of the most underrated super bowls in NFL NFL history. And we're looking for their third title in four years. Andy Reid looking for that first title after finally getting the Eagles back to the Super Bowl for the first time since nineteen eighteen eighty so that was the setup as the teams gathered on the field in Jacksonville Florida for Super Bowl. "Rodney Harrison the name that keeps coming up is Dak Prescott. Remember, there's no fifth year option to pick up. He was not a first round pick. And there's a big debate. No consensus in terms of how good he really is. And if he truly deserves to be the next guy to break the Bank. Rodney you watch that Prescott. We've watched him now for three years there's been ups there's been downs. It's not a question of will. He maybe is it should he be the next quarterback to break. The bank. Would you give him that type of money to keep him around as your quote unquote franchise quarterback? Well, think about this. You know, ten million dollars a year to us is breaking the Bank. Okay. Maybe you should ask me that question. But I think that he's gonna get thirty million dollars a year. No, absolutely. Not. I think was going to happen is Jerry Jones came out and said, you know, as gotta be a team friendly deal. You know, now what that means to me is twenty five million dollars per year is the bottom line. And I think you start negotiations from there. Air Rogers is getting what thirty three and a half million. I think yes on average. And Russell Wilson's getting what thirty five thirty five. Okay. So if you say those guys are in the top five quarterbacks. Well that Prescott his number will be more likely around that twenty seven million dollars a year. I don't I would not go thirty million dollars a year. He's just too inconsistent. I love the kid. I think great leadership strong personality. Very humble kid. You know, you like them you talk to them you around him. He's just he has a good field to him. But will I pay him in access of thirty million dollars? Especially I have to do Amari Cooper, just gave DeMarcus Lawrence one hundred million dollars and Zeke, Elliot, and I think really this is going to a z q Elliott, I don't think you can pay DeMarcus Lawrence one hundred million the quarterback one hundred million and Amari Cooper is gonna want close to ninety million which is probably close to eighteen to twenty million dollars a year. You can't pay everybody. You know what I mean? And so I think Zico. Elliot is going to be on the short end of that stick the problem for me is this. I don't think actually let me let me rephrase that I know that that Prescott not in the same classic quarterback as Russell Wilson. And Aaron Rodgers how do I know that it's simple. Here's the thing. He's been blessed with a very very good offensive line. His three years. Right. Aaron rodgers. And Russell Wilson have had you know, they've had instances of good. But usually not great offensive lines the weapons in terms of the running back position is fantastic for Dak Prescott that Prescott because he has z kill Elliott. And look that team was doing squat last year. Right. And people say Watson till they got Amari Cooper. No, Rodney, we know better because we talked about a week in and week out. They got better when they went back to running that football as a focal point to that offense. See Russel Wilson and Aaron Rodgers can win you games by themselves. That Prescott isn't that type of quarterback that isn't gonna do that? He needs the running game to be established for him to be. Better. He's a flawed quarterback compared to the other two. And the only reason why he's gonna get remotely close to the money of the other guys. We mentioned is because of the position he plays. You're not because the talent level you do you think do you think this is something when you look at him play? And I know he's he has this ups ups and downs and low inconsistent. Do you believe that he's capable of doing a little bit more than what Tony Romo did in terms of taking them deep in the playoffs? Or or is it predicated more so on say his teammates, and who he has surrounded them as far as yes. Absolutely. I think it has more to do with what's around him in terms of talent Romo never had that great offensive line. At least the last five years of his stay in Dallas. Right. He didn't have a running back to caliber of Ezekiel Elliott. And I think Tony Romo is a better passer than back Prescott is to me, you know, people say, yeah. But as he gets older he'll be a better passer. No what I've learned Rodney. And I think you've known this. And when you look at completion percentages. It's a misleading statistic. Right. Your completion percentage is going to be five to ten percent higher. If you keep checking down to your running back, we saw that with their manning. Right. We saw out with Cam Newton this past year. Reality is deck Prescott is not a great passing quarterback Willie ever win the Super Bowl. Oh, will he everyone a Super Bowl? No. That's that's that's deep right there. Because you look at the Dallas Cowboys and all it takes is for them to click, and they have some talent add a couple of guys authencity. I wouldn't I wouldn't be so quick to say no because think about it even with Jared Goff and to me Jared Goff isn't a great quarterback. Nothing about Jared. Goff, scares me. Not right. Absolutely. Nothing. Scares me you add another receiver. You get a little bit of production. From the tight end position. You run the football defensively. Dallas Cowboys they play a lot of zone because a rod Marinelli, and they're very solid barn. Byron jones. He comes back from that hip. I think they can be right there. I'm not saying Super Bowl. But you just never know, man. Because now the league has so much parody in it. I wouldn't it wouldn't surprise me. If that Prescott will take them to a Super Bowl. There's two reasons that I well, there's one reason I don't agree and the only way that they go to a Super Bowl if they get a new head coach. Wow. I think Jason Garrett is a bolt average to slightly below average head coach who's lucky to keep having a job because of his friendship, Jerry Jones. And I think Jerry Jones should have pulled the plug on him two years ago. At least I think he's the biggest hindrance to them winning the Super Bowl and you're wrong about one thing when it comes to Jared Goff. There's one thing that really scares me about Jared GOP being a cow guy. Right. Apparently doesn't know the sun rises in the east and sets in the west that scares me, my friend, so what he still has more money than you. That's true. I guess you don't have to know basic facts, right? Like the sets in the west to make these waking up in his house while you waking up your little six hundred square foot apartment in New York paying five hundred thirty nine eight hundred thirty nine where people you're right. He could actually watch the sunrise and set from his mansion problems. As long cop is throwing touchdowns. And.

And his quote is. I just think it is. What is generally said about our team? It's just the questions you get asked. We have TV's on from time to time. So I don't. Think you're completely immune to anything. I just know a lot of people didn't think we could win yesterday. And I'm sure a lot of people don't think we can win in Kansas City doubted. Tom Brady is a new Tom Brady. We got him the first year and his rookie year is the only time we've got doubted Tom Brady, right? It's been awhile since we've had this, and it's fun. I like this new Tom Brady, he's feisty, man. He is I want to get into for a second at the risk of navel-gazing and talking about a guest when he's no longer here. I want to get into the idea of the sports interview in a second because Rodney Harrison is just doing what he has done to get that TV job. And he didn't answer anything like there were no answers there. It was just like just words for the sake of words to get to the advertisement. That's what happened there. And and that's just you know football speak. It's it's the culture he grew up and you go from the patriots sitting next to Tony Dungy. I thought when because he was a colorful player and because he was thirty player. I thought in the broadcast booth. He would be something edgier. Right. And so now, I'm ripping the guy after he's appeared on with us. But just so, you know, I I know how bad that interview was going like, I know there was nothing there that was just football gibberish. We wanted the juicy. Tony Dungy stories. He wasn't giving him up. I'm excited. I feel like we're easing our way into radio row. I can't wait you're going, right? I am going. Well, we were going to do a bunch of stuff we Healy we were going to do a bunch of stuff with big boy during the week as our Super Bowl correspondent. But apparently now he's the halftime show. Yeah. Well, that seems more important than messing around with nine needs to get his priorities straight. Well, we got an you know, what I found this week. This is just related to big boy, but someone might not find this as interesting before seems to have a secret Instagram. Count where it's just him cooking. I've found an Instagram account where it's big boy cooking in an air fryer. And he's giving you recipes on how to cook an airframe, and you just hear his voice, but it's big boy cooking in an air fryer. Re delicious. Right..

"What was this that you're just giving me that seventeen completed years in the league writing S seventeen completed seasons? And this is Tom Brady's thirteenth AFC championship game. Rodney Rodney thank you for joining us. And why is Tom Brady still in the league? And you're not I know you're a few years older than him. But not many. Because I I got since I said, you know, after fifteen years, and, you know, many many concussions and broken bones. And aches and pains, I say it was time for me to walk away. And and, you know, try to be an expert at this game in which you know, I've failed many times trying to do that. What is the worst pain? You've known. What is the worst pain football gave you walking around? And when did it hurt the most was it toward the end of your career? I mean, you know, I've I've had ACL MTO. I think that was the toughest injury of my career which ultimately did that in two thousand five when I came back. I was really never the same player. Still extremely smart. I was affective. But just wasn't quite the player that I was you know, when you tear it three out of your four, ligaments, man. That's that's stuff to come back from Rodney, you get a road the badge intact on a couple of extra rings, you know. No, no. And I'll I'll roll like that. If I can't play. If I can't trust me Atlanta wanted me to come in. And be a leader. They offer me a ton of money. And I said no way I can't I can't still money if my heart's not in it if I'm not a a major contributor. There's no way I can go out on that football field and taking anybody's money. What did you what would you do? If you're the eagles with the foles went situation. You know, it was perplexing because initially I had said, you know, week ago if this guy's able to get them back to the Super Bowl, I think they they're going to have a tough decision. But ultimately, I think this is Carson Wentz is team. I think, you know, this is a young guy that, you know, obviously, he's immensely talented guy that has gotten hurt the last couple of years, and you feel bad for him. But you know, there's a lot of players that come in and have some some injuries and things like that. I think he's going to be the quarterback of the future. I think he's going to be dynamic, and they'll figure out the right formula thing Doug Peterson figure out that right formula for him to get going with all the weapons and get on the same page, but ultimately they have to get back to running the football. They're gotta have success and find that one running back, and you know, instead of that running back by committee have that one guy that can go up in there and consistently be productive. I want to try that again with you Rodney. Let's just play the hypothetical that the eagles had one yesterday that I'll Sean Jeffrey catches that ball. And the eagles win. Rodney Harrison with us after that big. Eagles victory over the saints surprise to all of us. What do you do about? This foles went situation. Rodney. Well, like I said if he wins that game, and he goes on and possibly wins that you know, the NFC championship game. Then they would have had some difficult decisions kinda clear and easy. But you know, what you go free told you get a first round that you possibly get a second round. And you help continue to build your team. Tony dungy? Have you ever heard him curse? No. And you know, what as as pure as he looked on TV is the same way..

I mean, if they wanna have success he's going to have to show up him against Durham, James. It was going to be a heck of a match up. You need a guy like Julian Edelman and a lot of times these playoff games, you need somebody that kind of flies under the radar kind of that underrated person who's going to be that guy to step up is gonna be HOGAN who's gonna be James white. I always argue that I think he should just go ahead and stop planning make James white a wide receiver make him a permanent slot receiver because he stays on the field. I think he can be very competitive, and it takes a little pressure off of Julian Edelman so in Rodney Harrison right here with even ESPN radio. "Tom and i'm looking at the defense and i'm like how are these guys even here in the afc championship game and it's no disrespect because i spent some time right after he won afc championship but they don't have a lotta great playmakers they don't have a lotta great individual players on net defense but what they have they have guys at a cultural guys that you've if you tell them run through their brick wall they're going to run a hundred miles per hour through their brick wall and that's what bella checked means were when he talks about not having the best 53 but having a right fifty three players on his team rodney harrison here on the rich eisen show who on the patriots defense could crappy eagle starting on it nondefense who on the patriots start defense would be able to crack the eagles starting lineup out is a um probably entire secondary their entire sectors so our is better than jenkins and darby in all those i would say jenkins is the wild card because the jenkins can play nickel he can played a dime back where coveted tight end he could play deep safety free safety strong safety but most of these teams are playing with three safeties so when you when you start talking about the 4star is actually is going to be five sars because patrick cheung need place strong safety but he plays down in the box so don't you think with the rpo is that that the eagles are going to just try and pepper that that that 5 to 10 yard space beyond alana scrummaging that's the way that they're going to try and move the ball down for are gonna try to run the otrada doodles all runpass option reason all those different things once again i don't know i'm not the defense coordinator you know i've watched tape and i've seen the patriots and how vulnerable they are in certain positions but if you're philly you don't it's not rocket science continue to do what you've been doing.
