So it's our Backstreet Boys boys night out. Are you ready? They had some hits. You know, they sold over a hundred million albums, bigger selling boy band of all time. Their third album millennium in 1999. This is one we used to buy albums actually gone by them, sold 24 million in one year. Taylor Swift last year, digital downloads and hard copy sales, biggest selling album of last year, midnight, 2 million. Wow. That is crazy now. Yes. How many hours we used to buy compared to like toasters, won the world's biggest stars. So Backstreet Boys and the boys night out, lots of you want to come along 24 spaces. We're going to go to the pump, our local park here in Richmond, the London town beforehand. By the way, producer Tom cumi has problem with the limos. We did have two limos boat, 12 guys in each one. Limo company have just checked their dates. They've let us down. Is that annual leave day? Audio. It's a Wednesday night. What do you mean? We've got Christmas. Coming up. You need a Wednesday night or from Liam? That's your annual day off. We'll just give us the limo and I'll try it. So we're now in the situation where we do need transport to get from the London tavern to get the Backstreet Boys boys night out in style. So how many can fit in one limit? Well, I think it's only about ten or 11 or 12. So what about this? There must be with our listeners. You remember we had to try and find that hard that impossible to find car a couple of weeks ago with the billboards. Another limo. What about if we did a lot of the wacky racers, there's different amazing ways to get to Rodney. There's a limo. There's a whole strong carton carriage. What beautiful way for you you and I to arrive. To deport a horse drawn carriage. We're only going 800 meters. Exactly, but what a way to travel. Or we all scooter there. It a dragon formation. Let's screw it because the scooters might go. I heard that. I love those scooters. I heard the trials binding for those lime scooters. Oh, I think they're amazing. All right, so people are desperate to come and join us on our Backstreet Boys, boys night out. Hey Christian Jack and pat it's Aaron here and I need to be part of the Backstreet Boys boys night out. Look, I got to maybe be greedy here and ask for four tickets if you can spare them, reason is I went and I can take you to a back in 2019. I didn't know anyone there met three awesome blogs and we were known as the Backstreet Boys for the rest of the entire tour or way too long since we last caught up and that last time we did see a bit of Backstreet Boys together. So yeah, get us on the tour and you won't regret it. It will be heaps and apes of fun. We'll do a bit of a dance for you. Have a bit of a sing along. Let's do it. Okay, so it's four spots. That's a lot of tickets taken up through a web. But it's a good story. Do we let Aaron and his boys? I like the contiguity Backstreet Boys, bring them along. All right, Aaron in a crew, you can come along too. By the way, it's not a tour. He kept saying coming along to our tour. I got an email, yesterday from a car. Battery boys day out. It's not a day out. Oh my God, I just have a spa in the afternoon. Get our hair down and a facial. Or do we become groupies and follow the tour a city to city? No, no, we don't do that. Christian, Mike, come on, please let me come to the Backstreet Boys concert. I was gonna get tickets for back straight boys, 12 months ago, and none of my nights wanted to go. So I just left it. And now you've got these boys and all that, that would be bloody epic. We can get loose. Sorry.

"Steve fogel's international tennis tours throughout 2023 and just little update for you. They've just launched their 2024 Australian open packages have Steve fergal's international tennis tours. And I think it's fair to say that we would highly recommend a trip to the Australian open. It is great. Just a bit here. Today hasn't quite been great, they've been interesting little storylines. We'll touch upon them tennis. Tennis didn't catch fire today slightly odd weather day, it was one of those Melbourne four seasons in a day thing. We had the first night session match, which was the match of the day on paper between Jessica bagula and Victoria as a rank. That was played under the roof despite the fact that it was actually a really gorgeous evening outside and I understand that they were still fearful of there being more rain. It had been very on and off throughout the day. But I think that created a slightly odd vibe inside the rod laver arena I found the whole atmosphere of this match which we watched the entirety of Matt inside the rod laver arena David, you were in the commentary booth with an even better view than us. I found the whole vibe a little bit strange and maybe that's because Victoria Azarenka who won the match by the way handily 6 one 6 four 6 one. Maybe it's because she just made such a fast start. It kind of sucked the air out of the room and sucked the air out of Jessica bagula. Yeah, I think you might be right. I think I said to you when Azarenka was an early breakup. Oh, this is really good for the match. Because I felt like there was a danger with a danger because it wouldn't necessarily have been a bad thing, but there was a possibility that Jessica bagula could have absolutely rolled through that match given how well she's been playing what she's been doing to kind of everyone that she's been facing. So I thought, right, okay, this is maybe good for the contest that Azarenka has made a fast start. And I think it probably was to be fair for that first set. That first set was really interesting Azarenka thought was playing tactically so, so smart, looping some shots, slicing some shots, trying to take pagola rhythm away a little bit. I think pagola wants the ball in her strike zone and Azarenka was doing everything within her power to get it out of that. She was awesome, you know, so intense, so ready for the match and brilliant. You know, the best I've seen Azarenka play in a long, long time, to be honest. But even when she went, went a set up, I still felt like pagola had a real shot in this match because she wasn't that far away. And she wasn't playing, I didn't think, particularly close to her best. And then there was a really long game in the second set. I think it was the fourth game Azarenka came through it. And honestly, after that, there wasn't much resistance at all from pagola. She was slumping her shoulders. She was sort of looking over to her box. We picked up that she was sort of mouthing, what do I do? What do I do? She was sort of bailing out of rallies quite a lot. And it was a very un Jessica bagula like performance for that last four or 5 games to be honest. I was really shocked by that. And yeah, it was a shame, actually, because I didn't feel like it really did her justice because she's been playing so well. She's been so appropriately thought of as a real contender at this tournament and to go out like that was just a little bit was a little bit disappointing, I thought. Yeah, I mean, we will talk a lot about Victoria as raincoat because she's such an interesting and surprising story if this tournament. I mean, what a mysterious Stannis player. She is. And we all went to a press conference. That was fascinating. So we'll be going into depth on her, but just before we do Jessica bagula, I found this a really strange, slightly shocking day at the office. For Jessica bagula, her defining trait is being reliable. And okay, as our anchor played well enough today that anybody could have lost to her, but the manner of that defeat, I found slightly alarming. I felt like her energy at the start was how dare my opponent play this well. There was a lot of Yelena oster penko like sort of shrugging like, what's this? Does anyone sign up for this? This is what I prepared for. And then she, she rallied, no pun intended. She broke back when Azarenka was serving for the set poor game from Azarenka, it has to be said, but signs of possibility for bagula. And then it kind of went again just as quickly. And then again, as Matt said, first three games of the second set, I thought, okay, this is on. This could be toe to toe here at that point I would have probably picked a third set. And then she just disappeared. There was total surrender from her in the last few games. She was borderline unprofessional. I thought in those last few games and maybe there was something else going on, I don't know, but it was very unpair like who is so professional, so tough, so reliable so tenacious. I found it very strange and there's a couple of things from her post much press conference. She is not alarmed. She's very, very disappointed, but she was very like, look, I've reached a lot of grandson quarterfinals now have proven that this is no accident. I will keep getting myself into these positions and one of these times hopefully it'll turn out to be more. And I'm glad she feels that way. I'm glad that she's not in a disaster zone about it. But on the other hand, I did just have sort of ringing in my ears, your words about Victoria no, not Victoria. I can't do anyone's first name at the moment. Victoria, because I thought that too. Not at this stage. Really bad day for Jessica for you. No, your words about arena saber blanket and people having a moment, a moment of opportunity in, look, I don't think Jessica pegula is going anywhere. I really don't. I think she will be a factor in grand slams to come. But I do just wonder if this we might end up looking back is this having been her moment, I think this was an enormous opportunity for her and I'm glad she isn't devastated at losing that, but objectively, I think it is a pretty devastating loss, actually.

"A cast powers the world's best podcast. Here's a show that we recommend. Let's imagine you work for the U.S. government in Havana, Cuba, and you experience this inexplicable episode. There was an incredible pressure and pain in my head and my ears. Many of your colleagues are experiencing the exact same thing, and nobody in the U.S. government seems to know what it is or what's causing it. I'm adamant is. And I'm John Lee Anderson. From vice world news, this is Havana syndrome, wherever you get your podcasts. Hey cast helps creators launch, grow, and monetize their podcasts everywhere. A gas dot com. Hi, this is Billie Jean King. This is Marion Bartoli. I'm Matt vilander. This is Mary carillo. This is Pam shriver. This is Yannick Noah and you're listening to the tennis podcast. We'll greetings from garden square Melbourne park just in front of the rod laver arena the time is ten 18 p.m., the fountain is trickling behind me, the big screen is still going because there is doubles action, 25% of it featuring a sensation on the rod laver arena but singles action is finished for the night. And the reason we are here so early or so not quite as late as usual is because Novak Djokovic, the 9 time champion, has just beaten not sensation Alex domino for the loss of just 5 games. Two of those games were getting him to two all. And from to all Novak Djokovic just went into a different mode, a quite terrifying mode. I mean, he's just described it as his best match of the year. I mean by some distance he was fearsome tonight. It was pretty much a perfect performance, David. Do you watch the whole thing from the best seat in the House on the baseline at times just a few feet away from the 9 time champion? How good was he? Yeah, that's as good as tennis gets. In my estimation. I've seen it a few times from Djokovic in that commentary box actually. My mind goes back to him playing Roger Federer in a much hyped semifinal about 7 years ago. And, you know, I was part of the hype, you know, Federer Djokovic, all the rest of it, but it was when Djokovic was at his absolute peak in the first of his big peaks. Or maybe second of his big peaks, I suppose you'd say that 40 something match running 2011 or 12 or whenever it was as part of that. But he came out and he just destroyed Federer for two sets for about the loss of three games. And it was just as though he'd come out not just to win, but to just destroy and send a message. And tonight, for whatever reason, maybe it's just how he felt, being in the zone, maybe there was more to it. He came out to seek and destroy his opponent. And even in those first four games, that's what he was trying to do. I could see it in his eyes, I could see the way he was striking the body wasn't trying to rally. He was trying to knock demon or off the court. And demeanor to his credit, Ike made a very foolish decision to put on Twitter that demeanor has made a fantastic start because he's at two games all and he's living with this because that's what he was doing. Well on reflection, winning two games was blooming fantastic. I thought he was brilliant for the first four games that timid or and then I think he won two of the next 17. And so I looked stupid, but I don't care because that's what I saw at the time and then I saw Djokovic just settle. He'd got an angry look

"Folks and greetings from tennis podcast towers Melbourne where it's one 39 a.m. and tennis is happening. Of course it is. It's what we do. Here we are again in the middle of the night. Oh, hooray for Matt and hurray for the troopers that are Victoria as a ranker and jus Lin. They are the stuff they still have a way to go. Azarenka leading to one in the deciding set. She lost the first to jus. She took the second 6 one although it felt like a far closer set than 6 one and there are locked in battle in the third as orange has the brake, but it feels like it has a way to go. I predict a post 2 a.m. finish. Yeah, so then that's a fair bit. Okay. I think we've made our point about that. I think scheduling scheduling will come up again later in the show. I just want Azarenka to be asked about it on court is what I want and I want her to tell us what she really feels about being asked to go onto the court at 1133 p.m.. Because she is somebody that's not afraid to say things. Yeah. Yeah. And maybe she will, I don't know whether they'll be a press conference after this match. I don't know how many journalists will have stayed. There aren't any Belarusian journalists on site, so you're relying on international journalists, and I don't know whether anybody would stay for this, but it'll be interesting to see and will keep you posted. In future pods will let you know who wins this match, even though you'll know by the time you're listening, that is what we do here on the tennis podcast. What a service we provide. It has been a day. At the tennis, hasn't it? We lost eager field tech from the women's draw today, the world number one, the dominant world number one, the reigning two time Grand Slam champion, and we lost her in straight sets to Elena back in a 6 four 6 four. This was the first match of the day, well, the second match of the day on the rod laver arena a bit followed on from a and actually hilarious legends match. Yeah, in which the bob and Mike Bryan, who look more ripped than they did when they were on the tour. What a rather overdoing it against. They didn't get the memo about legends tennis. Absolutely destroying Mark full of booze as a mark back markers back daddy's. I don't really weird moment where I thought that the bryans were back. Because legends doubles teams don't normally make any sense. You know, it's normally, for example, Marcus baghdatis and Marc for the process. And you think, oh, well, that's obviously the legends. I saw the brians, and I was like, huh? What have I missed? You advocating that they split up and go with other partners and then face each other. That'd be good. Good watch. They might need to do that in order to prevent them from winning the tournament awkwardly easily because they didn't get the memo for sure today, but it was highly amusing. They were finished before 1230, which was the not before start time. And we're back in a we were in our seats for first ball. Oh, yeah, that was fun. The three of us. The first time the three of us sat in the press seats and watched an entire match together this tournament and we picked a good and I would have loved a third set, but it was a great great two set seeing Schmidt fine. I know you find watching her cruise very, very compelling compelling. And I do enjoy it, but I always want to watch a battle more than I want to watch anybody cruise and watching a player is dominant ischial tech trying battle and find solutions which she was unable to do. I found that very, very compelling. And actually she, that was something she talked about after the match sort of inability to problem solve and we'll come on to that. But Elena were back in her clinical, clean, beautiful ball striking, composed, she had it all. Today. I know the conditions suit her. I know we didn't think this would be if you'd said before the tournament is going to win, losing the oil perhaps before the drawing is going to lead in the fourth round. You think, wow, gosh, heck of an upset, but in fact, it was you that I think after the first round catching a glimpse of Elena were back in a just started to have eyes on this potential match up in the possibility of an upset, but even so, Elena are back in it today. Wow. Oh, she was awesome. And as you said, the conditions suit her, but you still have to go out there and perform in those conditions. And she just laid down a marker in the very first game, didn't she? By breaking, breaking she found tech serve just catching hold of some massive returns of both her forehand and her backend and. I don't know. I mean, I felt like she had opportunities there for sure, like I don't think it was a given that Rebecca was going to win that match just because she was playing well in good conditions. I did feel like there was maybe more that she film tech could have done. She might have some regrets about that, probably that second set in particular where she was ahead. But even so, just the task of facing the conditions just looks really uncomfortable, you know, she's got a massive serve. She's got massive returns.

"Time champion Novak Djokovic. He was on court on the rod laver arena taking on Grigor Dimitrov at the same time that Andrew Murray was on the second court in doing Andy Murray things. Look, it was a straight set victory, I think dementia might have one or two regrets about the opening set. Yeah, they set point in the tie break. But basically it was very Grigor Dimitrov and it was very Novak Djokovic. I think the story continues to be the Djokovic. The hamstring, which he is absolutely not dampening down, talk about every time he's asked about it, he says, yeah, it's really bad. I don't know what's going to happen, but I just hope that I can keep playing through it. Yeah, I was in the commentary box on rod laver arena, the way it works when we're doing a match on the second court with Andy Murray there. We're watching that on a monitor whilst out of the window is the center court match with Dimitrov and Djokovic. And look, it started with Dimitrov really struggling for his range and he got broken immediately. Djokovic was a breakup all the way through that first set and looks like he's just going to take it quite comfortably and then he did start to struggle physically. Something started to hurt him in that hamstring. Plus Dimitrov started to play a little bit better. He got the break back. He took it into a tie break and honestly, if he'd have won that tie break, I think we could have been still there right now to be honest because that would have obviously extended the match anyway. I think it had given Dimitrov some believe. I think one of the problems for Djokovic at the moment, and I think the reason he keeps mentioning it all the time is the same reason that Andy Murray doesn't hide that he's feeling terribly, he doesn't try to put a brave face on all this stuff. It's scaring the living daylights out of Djokovic, a twin. He's not used to feeling twins. So when he feels he panics and he thinks it's a disaster and he his way of dealing with it is to share. He tells you about it like somebody who feels rough and feels better when they talk about it. And I think Murray is the same. How bad is it? Well, it's just really difficult to know. And even he in his interview afterwards on court actually no, I think it was with yours, but I heard that he'd said that look, sometimes it feels great. And I run about and it's not hurting. And then I'll do one movement that's a particular movement that's set it off and I really, you know, it really makes me stop in my tracks and so look, Dimitrov extended in the third set, pushed him, it was very dim and shocked to be honest, Catherine, he had some lovely moments. The crowd loved him. But he doesn't do enough to win these matches against those guys. I mean, he's one one in 11 now against Djokovic, and really that tells you everything. Yeah, I think it's just a question of who can who can push Djokovic enough to really make the injury like a massive problem for him and honestly on his side of the draw I'm kind of looking at one name and that's you know because he beat a fit Novak Djokovic in Paris. He's got the game. I think the rest of the players

"Just drives them wild. This is a friend of ours. The only person we found to beat Matt Roberts basically. And you feel like I should be beating you. My game looks better than yours. Why aren't I winning? Yeah, I do think all these. The look on caspar rude's face was exactly that. Not that he was being disrespectful, but he just couldn't believe what brooksby was pulling off today. Yeah, he described him as annoyingly good, didn't he? In the press conference, I think that's what he said to him. And also, I just love how brooksby is like he annoys people. Absolutely. I think his grunting a noise people. I think things like what he did when he won the second set on a dead net cord and he didn't, he didn't apologize. And it sort of came back to something that happened earlier on in the year in Auckland where fanini was accusing him of not apologizing for the net cords. And he said something like, well, I was taught that net cords are nothing to do with luck. That's very funny. So it was funny how it sort of came full circle and it was brought up again today. But honestly, I quite like that he owns all of that. Absolutely. He leans into it. Netflix take note because, you know, one thing that the Netflix series showed up and Friends of the pod had been able to listen to our review show, there's a lot we like about it. But I do think tennis has a politeness problem and it needs more Jenson Brooks bees that aren't worried about their likeability. They want to win tennis matches. They have great respect. I think for their opponents and competition, but ultimately winning is what matters to them. And there they are. They are who they are. They own it. And I love it. Very quickly, Matt, can you summarize our collective exchange with Casper Ruud in the press conference afterwards? We ganged up on him a little bit, but it was important, I think. It was very interesting. We did. We slightly double teamed him on the talking point of the exhibitions that he played in the quote unquote off season against Rafael Nadal. It's a pretty, you know, you can't really ignore the fact that Nadal and Rudy are both out of the Australian open much earlier than they would have liked. And basically asked him whether he in hindsight regretted that and wouldn't do it again. You know, he would change up his schedule to prepare better for the Australian open. And in a very Casper Ruud way, he sort of talked himself through the answer, Catherine followed up with another question. And he basically said that, yes, he does think that that affected his preparation here. He had very few days to actually sort of practice and prepare and describe his factor. He described his off season playing an exhibition in Abu Dhabi. Yeah. I followed up and said, did you have an office? I said, I don't know exactly what that South American tour schedule was. Did you have an off season? Did you have a preseason training block? And he said he had a holiday in the Maldives, didn't he? Yeah. Priorities, obviously. And he said, yeah, and then on the way, and then he got into some nitty Gritty detail about his flight patterns. He said, and then I stopped off in Abu Dhabi on the way back because the flight connected through there or something. And I had three days hitting and then I played the battler open. That's just playing. That's just playing another exhibition. So you want to run an exhibition tool. You had a holiday in the Maldives and then you place a more exhibitions. Great. Okay. But as you said, he said, we'll look at it and won't necessarily do that in the future. I think in terms of his Australian open preparation, he was, I think, saying that it was a mistake. But I don't think he regrets doing it. I just think he needs to adjust as a player and maybe just be a bit more selfish and a bit more like a top player, to be honest. You know, he was kind of a good thing that he did, I suppose, taking tennis to those areas and being a big part of an important event for Rafael Nadal. You know, there were good aspects to it, but it wasn't helping him. And I think that's what he's realized there. We lost on gibbons from the women's draw the women's number two seed this evening. She lost out to marketo von droves of first ball of this match on rod laver arena played at 1124 p.m.. We said what we have to say about that. Struggling physically, very, very clearly, that knee injury, a massive factor in this, but also the fact that fundraiser is the worst possible player. I think, to play when you've got something like that going on, the way she maneuvers players around the court, the way you just have absolutely no idea what she's going to do next. She is an inexplicable tennis player. Absolutely, inexplicable. I mean, she should have won that match in two straightforward sets, and she did win that match in two straightforward sets. They were just sandwiched in between them, was a sort of set from a completely different match. Which was all about jabber fight, and absolutely incredible that jabot was able to get any kind of foothold in that much at all, let alone win a set because she was nowhere near fit and there was some harrowing images, footage of her in the corridor immediately after coming, of course. She sort of collapsed on her haunches hunched in a heap, it was really, really tough to see. I had a bit of a narrow escape there than Catherine because I was walking down the corridor. I have to walk down that walk of champions to get to our commentary box and I saw her coming towards me in the distance from the court. And we were only about 40 feet away from each other, and I took a quick left down the stairs, and otherwise she'd see me for the first thing she saw after coming off that court. She could do a lot worse. It might have been able to help you. You've seen me in worst moments, David. I just did see her and I thought, God, she looks crushed. And I was quick to get out of the way, because it must be horrible. I did find that reaction interesting. I thought maybe she'd be slightly more philosophical about it because of the injury. Maybe a resignation, but she's so desperate. It's the ambition, isn't it?

"It's not like her game totally falls apart. It's just a lack of confidence in a baggage and just it's almost like you just know it's going to happen and she knows it's going to happen. The players against her, I'm sure just know it as well. Stick in there. Hang in there. So I think what will happen is her ranking is going to drop quite a bit now, and she was already unseated, but she's talking about playing, not really lower level events, but really just be a bit out of the spotlight. She was saying, I think, just keep working, but she said before, she doesn't know whether to take time off or to keep trying and playing matches. She's so tough. She's really, really sort of stuck at the moment and I feel for her because we know what she's capable of. It doesn't feel like it's close to changing at the moment. It's been like this for a year. It's tough to see and we wish her well. What have we got for you tomorrow at Melbourne park? We have the full schedule out now and it's a mess. If you go to Graham pass tomorrow so many matches from today, I can't pick out a first round match from a second round match. I'll tell you what's on rod laver arena and we'll take it from there, folks. We got egg issue on taking against Camilla soria and then Jessica pegula against Alexandra sassa novich and third up Rafael Nadal and Mackenzie McDonald, day session again for Nadal, I wonder if he's requesting day session. Because of the conditions because of how the balls are playing, I don't know, but you know, generally speaking what Rafa requests he gets and yeah, he's played twice in the day now, so I wonder. Emirati Carney against coco Goff headlines the night session and rightly so yes please can't wait. It's followed by Stefano sits a pass against rinky hijikata. The Australian wild card Matt's tactic for predictions this week is to choose Australian sensations. So I expect you to predict rinky in Jakarta to fill up the upset tomorrow. Well, the problem is I don't know whether the strategy has failed yet because max per cell is still playing against him or rusev or he's losing. So I'm a bit worried about that. He's got a long time to think about the fact that he's losing. But no, so I have a band of that tactic and just gone for a very good player tomorrow to win. The pick of the matches on the second court for me is definitely Carolina mucus Daniel Collins. Under normal circumstances, if they were both fully fit and well matched. I know. But I'm just saying that should be a great match. Yet I fear it may well not be because neither one of them looks a 100%. Way to hype it up, David, that's last on the second goal. If you want to watch that. Maybe that cancel each other. And both be kind of like wanted to pick out Elena or back you know who plays on the John Cana arena she's lost on there tomorrow against Kai yu van. I'm pleased she's been given that billing just in principle as the Wimbledon champion and also because I think one of those three show courts scheduling there tomorrow is going to be a huge advantage because of because of The Rain that's forecast to come. So I think she's earned that advantage. She played on court 13 on Monday. I'm not saying she should headline rod laver arena, but she shouldn't be out on court 13. No. She shouldn't. It feels like I did because that, I don't know, don't know what it is actually, but she was outspoken, wasn't she at the U.S. open about not getting the respect she deserved in terms of court assignments and it seems to have got worse, not better since then. So John Kane arena for her tomorrow, there's so much happening. I was just thinking about how I said what a great grounds pass. It is. Except it's going to rain all day. That is true. It is going to rain. And there's going to be 30 mile an hour winds. Yeah, maybe I shouldn't maybe I shouldn't wet anyone's appetite for what's going on on the outside courts because none of it might happen. Oh, I know what I want to end on. I'd like to say hello to Pam shriver, friend of the show, Pam shriver. He was working with Donna vekic at the moment, certainly at this tournament. She was courtside for Donna Vic's opening round match against bear with me here because quite honestly, this is a player I'd never heard of before oksana. Tava, select miteva. 20 year old Russian player ranked a 179 in the world. This match after several other delays throughout the day. This match was literally going on all day. And Pam's juggling another job with ESPN, by the way, this match was suspended for rain at 5 one in the deciding set tiebreak. It doesn't finish. It has not finished. Who's winning that at the moment? Donna vekic. At least that's a long time to think about a 5 one lead, isn't it? And Pam's got some coaching to do what we're saying. The next 12 hours. We back you Pam. Go on Pam. So yeah, look, hopefully The Rain holds off tomorrow and if it does, everyone's in for a treat because the schedule is brilliant, but thank goodness for roofs. Slash roofs. One day we'll know what it is. We'll never be able to end that debate. Now that's it, I think, for your day two, tennis podcast from Melbourne park, need to say that we have our Australian open mascot called Delia, I posted our predictions presided over by cordelia on Instagram today, so head over there to check those out. And lots of other top notch content, though I do say so myself. You quite good at that. We have our mascots, David's got Maisie. Maisie, we absolutely nailed it. Maisie Murray. Yeah. Big win. Fair play, David. That was, that was impressive. It was impressive. Very impressive. Pick up on Andy Murray body language and change your mind. We picked up on it, but weren't brave enough. I just wasn't convinced.

"The Mona Lisa. Hey Christian, this is Carl. I'm just giving you a call regarding an underwhelming tourist attraction. I've just got back from London and had to do a tour of law 12 there. And it is the most disappointing cricket ground I've ever been to. It is so small. It stands a tiny only 50 to 15 people. There's just so underwhelming. I took my wife there and she's just looked at me going, you can not be serious. This is it. Not exactly the most exciting place to go to put it that way. There's a theme here about Australians traveling the world, you don't like things that you think are too small. Too small. Lords too small. Make it bigger, like the big pineapple. Christian Jack and patty, how did I break a window? I was on my rocking horse. This was the early 70s. I was only a couple of years old, apparently I picked up a bit of speed, and I thought it was the moment cup and I managed to jockey my way through a glass sliding door without even a scratch on myself or my rocking horse. I didn't become a jockey. That's from Lisa. Christian who talk about the first proper gig or live show there went to see. I was very lucky. My first gig was Queen at Wembley in 1986, you've ever seen the footage of this as one of the greatest live performances there ever, certainly from Freddy in the band. Gates opened at 1 p.m.. I got there at 9 a.m. thinking I'd be the first step. Nope. About 30,000 other people with the same idea. Supports include status quo and the alarm, but the first band on very early in the afternoon were in excess. I didn't know inaccessible. Christian, to this day, still one of the best experiences of my life, that's some rich. And then we do have Rod Stewart tickets at the moment. And I'm aware that a lot of you love Rod Stewart. And a lot of you have loved royal Stewart for a long time, like Laura here. Christian, my name is Laura, die hard fan of Rod Stewart. She really is listen to this. There's no sentences in this. It's just a bowl runs into each other with a breathless excitement. I'm 60 years old and I've seen every time he's come to Australia, a scream like an idiot. Don't laugh. I throw my undies on stage like I did in the 70s. Mind you, I was a larger lady then, but now after drastic piras have a lot smaller. I've tried all day to get tickets, no luck. I'm willing to pay top dollar to see my Ida. My idol, my daughter came over yesterday and we were talking about it and she said, mom, if you get tickets, please don't throw your undies on stage. My reply to her was this time there won't be big nano undies, but a G string. Oh. Then I was worried. Whatever they fit my phone number on that. Christian, I will do anything to see him. I will shovel shit if I have to. We don't need to do that. I've got a pair of tickets today. You can go, you can have my pair of tickets as well. Put your shovel down, Laura. Take your G string, whatever you need to do to get your groove on, but you can go and see Rod Stewart. Double pass to go and see rods too at the rod laver arena he's in March next year, bringing his hits towards a rod laver in a master 14th with Cyndi Lauper and John steams as well. Tickets go and sell 1 o'clock this Thursday at live nation. But Christian O'Connell show podcast. We're a try and find out who's got an old band T-shirt. I've got so many old ones, but my oldest one I checked yesterday goes back to 1992. And it's, I know, it doesn't fit anymore. I don't even think my case because I try to pump off them. It's an oasis one for when they're first single live forever came out. It was right before they broke bread because I was insulin before they were really big. I know, yeah. And I'm on the radio. I'm on the radio as well. Probably the coolest man in Melbourne. Number one, maybe number two, but no, no, no lower than that. Jackie boy, if you've got some old paintings. I could only go as far back as 2007. But that's when you were born, isn't it? Bianca and I have matching NOFX band t-shirts. Oh, that's cute. Well, not really, 'cause I dragged her along to the concert. She never wears hers. I still wear mine sometimes. So you got his and hers. She wore it was at the concert. I've never seen her again. Do you often like dress the same in your house? Yeah, we love these Levi hoodies. I tell you every day we're in those Levi hoodies out and about. That's nice. Patsy have you got an old band T-shirt? I reckon I could go back as far as about 2002 2003. It was Brian Adams. It was room service, played at rod laver, arena, and same thing. Well, he had a talk called room service. Yeah, well it was a new album, my own service. Running out. He painted with summer 69 room service. He did the hotel room. What can this album be called? You know what the interview really successful singers? Like it's actually very hard because I wrote all my good songs when I was poor. That's why I like a lot of our music, I say struggles of that first. Simply calling it room service is an anthem for the common man. Thank you very much. Where's my statement again? I ordered this 40 minutes ago. Private jets. And the love club got one as well, but I haven't seen him wear it. Like Bianca chick. No. Because he says room service. But Christian O'Connell show, podcast. This morning we're asking you about your old band t-shirts. What have you got? Christian, I have a U2, Melbourne concert T-shirt from 1983. That's from Sue. Thanks Sue. This is some Chris and king's part. Thanks for jogging old memory. I've never thrown out my new kids on the block T-shirt from 1990. I have to try and find it after work tonight. Morning Christian Jack and pat team oldest band T-shirt is from 1987. When I saw OMD supported by little known band crowded House in Adelaide, only worn it once or twice, but it's traveled many KM's with me in all my various moves. It's hung up in my closet some Allison. Kushner have got voodoo lounge, running stones, T-shirt, Melbourne 1995 at genos drove. I have a scientific from the console I went to in the 80s from Talking Heads that I've only ever worn once us from Sammy also and great live as well, Sammy. All right, let's say it's a cause, 9, four, one, four, one O four three. Your old band t-shirts Amelia. Hi. Hi. Welcome to the show. Hi. Hi Jack and hi patty. The whole team are waving on me. I'm gonna teach it from 92. Bon Jovi still wear it so many holes in it. It used to be black now it's a faded light gray. Now faded like gray. Yep. Yeah, dry from horseshoe to Melbourne to the concert. First concert is an adult man my friend. So awesome. Yeah. Great live on. Do you remember that? Because that would have been a couple of years after slippery when wet. Yeah, yep. Lovely. Yeah, that's correct. Thank you. Pop quiz for me. I love some damn. It's so good. All right, let's see how that went. Hello Emilia.

"What was the first big live music show you ever saw? Already had a great one then that Patsy took it to Patsy's daughter Audie on Friday scene Dua Lipa as her first one, which is pretty amazing. What was it for you, Joe? So before I went to the big day out which was the first huge bands I saw, I went to the Alton roller rink to a punk show to see scar band area 7 and I remember rocking up and my mom dropping me off and everybody else was dressed as punks like mohawks. Tattered shirts, leather jackets and I was in a mambo shirt and parachute pants. Patsy, what was it for you? Aw, do you know what? It was probably when I was working for 3D in the country we went to rock a longer, which was a thing at Yara wonga every year, which, you know, in the country, not many shows came in the country to the country in the late 80s, and it was Jimmy Barnes. And boom crash opera. I thought that must have been amazing. Yeah, it was awesome. The first proper concept I ever went to was actually in excess. I was 16 and like I was saying earlier, just Michael Hutchinson as well. They were brilliant live band. It says were amazing, but he was a proper. He first frontman saw and he had leather trousers on. He was swinging from a vodka bottle. I still raise one of the coolest things I've ever saw. A wide eyed 16 year old my friend and I traveled up to the big smoke to London. So don't actually live in London. And it was such an exciting time just to see an actual big rock and roll band. And they were incredible. On a brighter note. You were listening to the Christian O'Connell show podcast. 16 years ago last week I saw Billy Joel as a 15 year old at the now demolished bowes were dome in Perth, easily the youngest there, got my tickets, can't wait to see him again in a couple of weeks time. Yeah, he's at the ERG's not long now. Thank you very much, Daniel. It's got to Ariana. Good morning. Hello? Hello? Hello there. Okay, so what was the first live show you ever saw? The first live show I ever saw was when I was 7. It was 2013 and mom took me to see kiss Mötley Crüe and Finn Eddie had stadium. Wow, that's an amazing three great bands to see there and you were very young. Yeah. Do you remember much from it? Yeah, I do. I remember it being very, very loud and plugs in my ears and I went and holding and I was getting very frustrated and we had seats and floor tickets and I remember dragging mom up and down the states when I wanted to sit down and then going, oh yeah, no, let's go on the floor and then we'd go on the floor and then I'd go back up to the states and she was very annoyed with me. And you still go and see shows with mom now? Yeah, we still go up we just saw kiss three times when they came in August. We got four tickets and then we were able to make them and get a photo with them as well. You two are amazing. What a great double act you are. Yeah, it's just mom and I are so pretty pretty close. Oh, that's so lovely to hear and that you still got that joint passion together a live music. So what's the next show you'd be seen together? We don't have tickets for anything at the moment I don't think. So I've got a pair of tickets. Do you want to go and see Rod Stewart live? Rod Stewart live is amazing. I was just talking to mom about this the other day yesterday. I would love to go and see Rod Stewart. I've got pair of Rod Stewart, 'cause I'm going to give them to you right now. Double pass a go and see what rod laver arena in March next year, take mom, have a great time on us. Oh my God, thank you so much, Christian. That's all right. Thanks for calling. I love the passion as well. I love the relationship we got with your mom as well. Have a great day. Thanks for calling. Thank you, bye. Bye. What a lovely girl. Anthony, good morning. Good morning. The old how are you? Yeah, we're good. So what was the first live show you ever saw? I went to see area 7 at the local Franklin skate park back in 90 something many, many millions you guys. So you're a fan like Jackie boy. Yeah, I was back in the day. My mom dropped me off and she made this polo shirt and I said, nah, top ring so I broke orientation. One of the ways like a black rotation and got changed before winning in the concert and when I left jumped in the car with mom and I go mom, we got a Mac and she said, no, she can sandwiches in the cotton bite. Where's the shit? I said, what shit? On the poll you brought. Oh shivers, mom. In the back in the cut, back in the constitution, I changed in the 12. I don't know whether she had done, I heard about how much it was on special. I was a nice shirt. 20 something years later, I still hear that that really should. I love the fact that you try to be a secret closet punk away from your mom, that's amazing. And I Clark Kent Superman not you getting changed in a phone box coming out emo Superman. Anthony, that's a great one. Thank you very much, she called me. I have a good day. Let's go to Adam. Good morning, Adam. Good morning, guys. How are you all? Yeah, we're good. I hope you had a great weekend at him. What was the first large show you ever saw? Well, I feel very fortunate to say this. I got to see Nirvana live at the palace back in 91. So wow, that's incredible. 1991, I saw them in 92. How old were you? I was 15. My aunt was friends with somebody that had something to do with the palace back in the day. So we were very fortunate in the sense that we got a free pass to go and see them and it was just believe me away. It was the greatest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. I've actually walked out that key, thinking to myself, I actually want to be a musician. So yeah, it was amazing. Yeah, what an experience to see a band like that 9. So 91 was probably just got the cast before they really sort of became global stars. Yeah, they sort of, I think it was sort of around the never mind. So I had the cassette, but they played a whole bunch of other material that I hadn't actually heard yet, but when the curtain was just all pitch black and you could just make out this silhouette curtain was taking the last few drags and the cigarette and then they just launched into aneurysm. And then when the drums kicked in from Dave Grohl, all these psychedelic lights behind them just went nuts and we were on the balcony. So there's just a whole seat people just moshing and going insane as if I was just blown away. It's actually giving me goosebumps just imagining the scene you just painted there so vividly, it was amazing how much you still remember of it. I was one of those turning points in my life Christian and I'm Kurt Cobain such a humble person. You just had this presence about, you didn't have to do anything. It wasn't over contrived. So let me just strum this guitar and sang. I just, I don't know, just bring my mind and amazing lyricists like lyrics just really bleed their way back in the day. So yeah. It's an amazing and it's still doing live music now. You say that it's sort of made you want to be getting a band. Do you still do that now? Occasionally, yeah, my old band has actually been around for 25 years. So they're actually doing a reunion show later this year, but I'm going to get up into a couple of songs. Frankenbach. Frankenbach. Right. It's awesome. And where's the reunion show going to be? Give it a plug. Okay, thanks. It's going to be at the total December 10. A couple of weeks ago. In fact, you're going up against Billy Joel. Billy Joel. Billy is going to look out our empty seats and go beauty frankenburg. He holds 300 people for that show. The reunion had to be tonight. The only show doing in Australia. And if you know what we're giving Billie Joel tickets away in the last week of the show, for everyone who loses, we should send them to Franklin. No, we give them a choice. Pretty Joel or frankenbach. Adam, great story. Thank you very much for taking us there, mate. Really, really amazing stuff. Thank you. "Welcome friends to the Christian O'Connell show podcast. Not so long ago, a manager saw Patsy out with a pair of tickets for her and her daughter to go and see her daughter's favorite act in the world, was playing actually at the Palais from a star as big as Dua Lipa Palais would be a small intimate gig for her. But what a great venue going to see Julie. And a Patsy, you were so excited and obviously daughter Audie even more excited than sadly, because Patsy screwed it all up. They never got to go to the cash. Well, what happened? No, because a flight delay is in Sydney. We've got 6 in the evening, leaving one. Of all the ducks had gone in their rise, or would have been fine. But it wasn't. Two empty seats. So then Patsy has been making a big deal of it last week and a half ago. It's a shame. You couldn't get me any extra. Barely a day goes by. There's still a shame, isn't it? And we say to her, oh, there's still and so you can still buy something. And she just went, yeah, she just hit the disorder. The muggles. Not for people like us. Behind the velvet rope. That's a ton of work in total boot by the way. I'm still working on the other day. Behind the velvet rope, the Jones story. Podcast title. They go, have it, actually, please. It's a gift to you. Patsy, I have a pair of tickets. But you and all need to go and see Dua Lipa, rod laver arena. Tomorrow night. Oh my lord, when you see the surprise, I thought it must have been for Jack because it's your birthday. You get the president. Really? Just sit that wrong. So she went to school. You can get the president. That's right. You can go. No, no, Dua Lipa. I had to ring her again and it's a nightmare trying to get through through a people somewhere. I said, I need another pair of tickets. She went, Christian, you can have them, please tell me that portrayed in the mom is a massive fan. And I need to check now, so we're going to do 5 Dua Lipa questions. Oh, I've got no ID. You better tell us. To make this fair, you need to get three out of the 5. Three out of 5 right and then you can have the tickets, if not, I will give them away to an actual job. I know. Let's play the music real. She's listening in the car at the moment. You have a clue. Hang on a minute, this is a Rod Stewart song. It's Dua Lipa. I'm brio. He was a big jewelry fan. I'm pretty sure. This is carry on. Do you have a clue what about to believe then you can go to the gift? I'm coming around. Patsy 5 questions. Now, in all serious because you have got to get three out of the 5 right to win the tickets. You still have an option at any moment. You can call Audie and you can nominate her like phone a friend, ask a friend to answer one question for you, but you must get three out of 5 right. All right, when you get a right answer, you will hear. Team's been busy on the production. When you hear room. Oh no. Are we ready to do a leap? Ready, go. Let's start easy. Let's give you an easy one a softball trill false. Dua Lipa is her real name. No, false. Oh no. Oh. That's surprising. It's a second one. Oh no, I feel like we're kidding Christmas here. This is data. I thought you did. All right, all right, get this you're gonna smash this. I know you are. Sing the next line. So this is from one of our biggest hits with Calvin Harris. I'm not hearing any love. Julie, prison coming to rod laver to go with Joe. I think you know this one goes, please, you see, I've forgotten it. Every part of it. Play it again. Thank you. Possibility. One to mumsy. Do you refer to yourself as marching? All right, how many? This is another easy one. How many Dua Lipa's? Would make up the height of the Sydney harbor bridge from sea level to the top of the arch. Stacked on top of each other. From sea level you say. From sea level I do say, to the top of the arch of the great Sydney harbor bridge, how many Dua Lipa's. Which is quite tall actually, isn't she? All right, is it 1000? Or is it 77? Not be 1000. Try to make it so obvious. No, I hang on. Time. I'm not trying to make it so open for you. You're breaking my heart. I've got the team we're going to go, you might just give it to her. That wasn't obvious. Well, the answer is 77. It's 77 or a thousand. Oh, the bridge is pretty hot. She's not that big. 1000. Tomorrow night, the odd labor. She's got a head poker through the top of the arena. Oh. How many out of three? One. I've got to get the next one. Come on, come on, you can do this. We're in a must win situation, in which country was Dua Lipa born. And she's from the UK. Yay. All right, here's the big one. Here we should be going to win this and you're off to see Dua Lipa. And these are amazing tickets as well. They are really, really great tickets. I bet they are. What time does Dua Lipa hit the stage in Melbourne learning from the last mistake we need you to get this right? Yeah, it's already asked us to ask you this question. 7 30. Wait, don't forget you have a phone a friend as well. All right, let's phone a friend later phone awards. All right, let's find out what are you right now? This is Patsy's daughter. Try to win the tickets. Or do I there? Yeah. Isn't this exciting? Mom is almost gonna win your tickets to go and see Dua Lipa tomorrow night. That's amazing. All right, that's really exciting. All right, so Audie, get this question, right? You're going. What time does Dua Lipa hit the stage tomorrow night at the rod laver arena? What time? Is it 7 30? Did you say 8 30 audio? I just need to be clear. Did you say 8 30? Yeah. Yes. Yes, you're up to suit you. Tomorrow night, the red light will end all day. Hold on, it's 8 30, making open your phone now, per team. Well done, I've already enjoyed the gig. You guys get there at 7 30. And Patsy will play well done, mate. You're off to Julie, but tomorrow night rodley. This is the Christian O'Connell show. "I said I'm warning take back, put your feet up, go about your chores, but stay with us. You reject him on news talks he'd be. Thanks for your feedback, Dina sain us a lovely night to say Jack and Kevin, don't forget a grandparent as the greatest press agent that a child will ever have. It's totally right. Dave has takes to say, Jack, I'd just been a week with my first granddaughter from Australia who's now 21 months old, wonderful time for us all. Ah, yeah, that is so special, Dave. Thank you very much for that. 92, 92 if you want to flick me a text message this morning an email as well, Jack loved your opening comments on the fed express space this morning. I know the debate over the goat, IE the greatest of all time and tennis. As never really settled, in my opinion, it comes down to how you define the greatest of all time. As you said, Serena has probably had the biggest impact on the game, but there is nothing quite like watching Roger Federer at his best. Andrew sevil is with us, this morning gilda save. Go to Jake. Let's start off with feet and then we'll break down the rugby situation. So I started the show this morning by just reflecting on the player who I think from anesthetic perspective is the greatest tennis player, right? I've ever seen. I think just from a raw human movement perspective, I think theater Ed is best in my eyes is unrivaled. The one player that the only player I've ever seen that looked like the record was an extension of his hand. And he made it look, he made it look so easy. Yeah. From serve to volley to that fantastic topspin backhand to a slice backhand to his court coverage to his tennis intelligence to the way he held himself on and off the court, there will only ever be one Roger Federer and that's why I think like you. He's the greatest tuna's player I've ever seen. I saw him play a couple of times at the Australian open on rod laver arena in the flesh and you realize then just what a superb athlete Roger Federer is or was I mean he looks graceful and totally in control on television, but then when you see it, only meters away, it is quite it is quite extraordinary. A lot of change going on at the moment, Jack means gone, Serena's gone. Now the king of the courts God, I don't like this. I mean, like all the change. Alcare is winning the U.S. open last week. There's, again, suggestions that the changing of the guard and the new wave. What it's going to happen has to happen. But I don't think I just don't think the players coming through are yet up to the standard of a refugee. No, feeder. And I don't know, even if they get to that point, whether they'll have the consistency of winning majors like rev and Djokovic and figure out I remember when feeder is only appearance in Auckland at what was in the Heineken open was 2000. Played on court 6 7 lost. And we never saw him again, unfortunately. No. No one could. From memory, no one knew how to pronounce his name properly. I think it was world junior number one or done well on the juniors, but it was defeated in before you know it. Fedora. Yeah, yeah. Forget that name of Roger Federer. Yeah. I totally agree. Right. I'm going to give you my thoughts on the rugby. And then I'm very aware that I take you through until midday. And then, well, I'm fascinated to know what you think, because I saw you, you know, when you're presenting the news last night, I thought you had a very straight face and you were very neutral as you should be, but yeah, I'm intrigued to see what you think. Here's what I reckon. I reckon it was among the best rugby games I've seen in a long time and that I just can not recall an intensity that rivaled the gang. I thought the all blacks were very lucky to win. And I think that by the leader of the law, the referee was right, I think I want to see referees crack down on time wasting. I don't know that it was a time to that time to make the stand. And I think if the shoe were on the other foot, I think we would be insane at the call. So I think it was the right call by the leader of the law, and I support a crackdown, but I don't know that that was the time to make that call. I think if it was against the all blacks, we'd be launching our one frigate towards the coast of France. Look, fantastic game is in a spectacle entertainment tight on the scoreboard at the end. Key point number one is the all black should have never been in this position. There were 18 points up. Midway through the second half, the old team was read and co would have never been in that position. They would have probably smoked the wallabies by 40 or 50. I thought the floodgates were about to open Jack and in the all blacks went to sleep. That's the concern. So within we get to the last couple of minutes. And I've been to the game 7 or 8 times, referee renal head told the wallabies three, if not four times in the first half, it should be when they had two players off the field. He warned them or told them to hurry up and play. So there was a bit of history in that match. However, he didn't issue a proper formal warning like you see when he gives away too many penalties he would say next players in the bid. If he'd done that maybe early second half mid second half, I think everybody could have swallowed this decision a little bit easier. Yes, we want to get time wasting out of the game because the Irish did it to the all access of Africans always do it to the all blacks. It's a key part of trying to beat the all blacks that you slow the game down anyway. So the wallabies were doing that. But I think wrong time wrong place to make a mess of call like that. He took, he stopped the clock, he gave Bernard foley time to the in position himself, started the clock again. I think foley was well within his rights to make sure his players behind him were onside before he kicked. And then he blew the scrum. So an oddball decision, I can sort of see he'd had enough of the wallabies time wasting, but gee whiz, what a crucial moment in the game. Yeah, yeah. The other thing is I do you know I had a terrible, terrible sleep on Thursday night because I was lying in bed and I couldn't stop thinking about the Darcy swain. Going to pirate incident? And I don't know, maybe it was the commentators or something, and you know, and that they were obviously disgusted by it. But I just, I just thought it was the most grotesque thing I can remember seeing in like a professional sports game in a really long time. It really bothered me. This young man has formed too, and yeah, he does, he does. Yeah, I found it really, actually really troubled me. I thought it was just such an ugly side of him. In rugby, you can sort of handle the odd punch up and if someone or someone gets seen toward in cops a couple of weeks, you can get that. It's a physical game. It's a brutal game, but when you are standing prone over a rock and this is where so many of the head knocks and injuries come from these days at the breakdown. It's cleaning out, which I hate. And to target, he was looking at to pause league. I think he slipped, which probably didn't help his cause. Yeah. But to do that to a prone player, he will go for a massive skate on the midnight on

"Well, thank you very much. Rose from Kingston Ontario that you heard in our intro, there rose is a friend of the pod from Canada, obviously, and just to clear something up very quickly, various different Canadian listeners have been in touch to let me know that mittens are a thing in Canadian sport and among Canadian sports fans. So I've learned something. I told you the Canadians mobilize with their emailing and apparently apparently stems from the Vancouver Winter Olympics a few years ago. Which were a very good Winter Olympics. I have to say, but we shall be dwelling on that folks because we need to talk about Ashbaugh the Australian open champion. She won through today in two sets over Danielle Collins two hard fought set she is a deserving champion as deserving a champion as they could ever be, I think she is a celebrated champion, a popular champion. I mean, I don't think popular even comes close to it. Matt and I were in the stadium in rod laver arena tonight watching ush party grit out that title and watching her receive the Daphne at cursed memorial trophy from evangel gong, which was a surprise to everyone goodness me. They kept that secret well. I genuinely think it was a total surprise to almost everybody in that stadium and it was a very well delivered moment of theater and theater theater is exactly the word I feel for what we've all been lucky enough to see tonight, but I think Matt and I feel particularly privileged that we were able to be there and PS. It's because of Friends, the tennis podcast that we were able to be there. So thank you very much. The whole night. Down to the fact that for the first time, this Fortnite, they didn't announcement saying, please put your phones on silent and make sure that they don't make any noise. I haven't heard that before this fortnight. They've been making various admin announcements about masks, et cetera. But this really felt theatrical from the word go and don't labor the analogy, but Ashbaugh definitely read the script, I think. And to be fair, Danielle Collins read the script as well because she made it a match she made it an occasion. She made it not feel like any kind of anti climax tonight. Totally, yeah, absolutely. It was a really good match. I think it looked for a long time like it was going to go three sets, of course, but in the end it was too very competitive set. Certainly the second set, it was very special being on the rod laver arena, as you said there were points of difference tonight compared to other nights. That's always going to be the case with a final. It feels different. There is a sort of tension in the air from the start, so much on the line, just the fact that the trophy is was right there at the net when they were shaking hands and having the photo taken just I don't know, it's just also intimidating, I feel and yet sort of both players really really handled it. I thought and yeah, the media seats were rammed. We've often sort of had the run of the place to be honest, but they were packed today. And yeah, I thought the atmosphere was pretty spine tingling actually really went through you when there were big eruptions whenever I sparked one points and whenever it got close and yeah, I think you said at the start of joy, there's so much joy around ash Barty. Everyone likes everyone roots for her. There's not a bad thing to say about ash bharti and I think she unites everyone and in that stadium. There's just such a warm feeling towards her tonight. It was special to be there. Yeah. I had the privilege of commentating on quite a few of these finals. And even in the role that you occupy whilst commentating, you're aware that it matters more than it feels different that every point is being hung on by everyone there and I find myself quite edgy. Myself feeling quite edgy even just watching TV and Hannah on our Twitter was really summing that up and from a party perspective as somebody who has everybody rooting for you and if she would dare think about that for a few minutes and feel like those people at home were feeling all those people that were rooting for in the stadium, she would not be able to play the sport, frankly, and so she had a real job to do on herself in that regard. I think she's done a brilliant job really of preparing itself for this moment. And I actually felt overall the occasion ended up being just about perfect because we got to see a close start. We got to see the moment Barty put the foot down and showed what she got. Then we got to see the Daniel Collins the real Daniel Collins and so did everybody in that stadium as she just decided to take them all on. And let everybody have it. Let everybody have the full Daniel Collins come on, let's go in your face experience whilst slamming backhands down the throat of ash bharti. That was her stunning to play her very best tennis for a purple patch there that got her out to that 5 one lead. And then we saw the flick of the switch of the bharti game. I compared it to Roger Federer last night, and I stand by that comparison. She has some think she has magic in her fingertips and she showed. She showed why she is separated in that regard from everybody else. And therefore we ended up with that scene at the end of a play winning the Australian open first time I've said it in my lifetime and it's a massive deal. It really felt huge. Because she didn't play her best tennis tonight, did she and I'm you know I'm not used to rush party, not looking sort of anything, but impervious to anything. You know, that's what she's, she's looked all tournament, you know? It's been sort of implausibly smooth almost. So I really enjoyed watching her challenged not just by Danielle Collins, but by the occasion and by the nerves which occasion she's got these real coping mechanisms with everything that she deals with her level of self control and all the rest of it is extraordinary, but she's not a robot. They're coping mechanisms. They're the mechanisms to deal with what she is feeling. And yeah, that was a massive challenge for her today..

"Until these issues are mentioned in serious detail by this tournament, their prior day efforts should not be considered as enough tolerance is not enough. Anymore. And my goodness me, there's so much to get into there. A lot of new ones, a lot of detail and a lot to be considered and I really appreciate that whole hair. I mean, ultimately, ultimately, this tournament is in a very tricky position, I believe, because of the name. If that second court in there, they're backed into a corner and it's pretty clear I think the name of that court is not going to change. They've no intention of changing that name and while that name remains on the court, everything might feel a bit hollow and a bit like empty gesturing. As lovely as some of the things that we're done today were the rod laver arena with lit up in rainbow colors tonight and that was fantastic. And it really did feel like a genuine commitment to deprive day today, but it's a problematic situation for this tournament, I think. Yeah, there's always going to be a tension on a pride day when you have well, I'm just gonna say it. A known outspoken homophobe on the name of the second chord. Until that is changed a day like this won't feel completely what it could be, what it should be, what everyone hopes it to be, I think. So I really want to say thanks to Jorge for sending us that message and sharing his experience that's really important, I think, as you say, a lot of it really did resonate with us. I think the videos they put up could have had more introspection, not even using the word gay and the script, for example, makes it sound a bit shallow, I suppose. But you know I can talk about my experience on site today at Melbourne park and it was a really good vibe on site today. It was great seeing so many pride flags. I do think a lot of thought and attention and detail had gone into a lot of activities around the site. We didn't see a lot of them because we were in the media center conditioning in the air conditioning. But you could get tattoos. There were shows. You could get I could get a tattoo. Yeah. Well. A memento. A momentum of the trip. And you know, I think we saw a lot of fans with pride flags and wearing rainbow colors and over this tournament. We've seen cocktails wearing the rainbow wristbands. We've seen Liam Brody wearing the laces. My ELISA cornea's team were all wearing the wristbands today. They managed to score a hall of responds as well. Yes, absolutely. My take on this is that we have to, yes, I agree. It isn't enough. They should be more, but you have to learn to, I think, accept small progress along the way. And this didn't exist at the Australian open before today. So it's progress that it exists now. Can it be better? Yes, should it be better? Yes, should all tournaments have it should all slam have it? Yes, I think absolutely. There's a lot more work to be done. But I ultimately see today as a win, really. I think we can't be too harsh on it, because there were a lot of good things done, I think, today. Yeah. So I felt safe. I felt seen, I felt included all of that. It was a good vibe, wasn't it? It was a very good vibe. I mean, I find that very interesting to listen to both hawkeye's email, which I read myself earlier on today before you decided to include it in today's show and I'm really glad you did because it makes me think about things. I have my own reaction to things upon seeing them, then I hear you talk about them. I see other people talk about them and then I read that. And it all helps me to understand things that I feel like I need to try to understand. And just on the sort of the small wins along the way, ending up hopefully in a place where you feel like proper progress is made and where you want to end up being I remember being at the Australian open the year that that court was first introduced in named. And I don't really remember anything in terms of protest or disappointment in that decision. And then I remember being there the year that Laura Robson wore the rainbow hair band which you referenced a few days ago, Catherine. And you know, that was a small moment, but a small gesture, but a big moment, really. And it created an enormous amount of publicity as you talked about at the time. So from there, that first year that I was there when it was named to Laura to now, that does feel like a big jump to me, but I also understand that I'm not the one that has at every stage got to face this or has had to face this at every turn and I want to understand. And it's just really helpful to hear these sort of stories. Absolutely same. And that's why I wanted to read it out. And I think today was progress and it was really positive and it's important to celebrate that and not be down on it just because it's not, you know, perfect progress, but equally I think we need not to be complacent and not all just pat ourselves on the back for wearing some wristbands as much as I'm delighted with the wristbands because you know tennis has a problem..

"Well, thank you very much to Rebecca monk from E link for your lovely intro there, ealing not far from my neck of the Woods. And eating Broadway on the Twilight paddington line, which my dad used to commute to work on, so thank you, Rebecca, and welcome to our day 7 Australian open podcast. It's been a day of two sessions, I think today we've had the day session which was upsets galore really know sort of seismic headline grabbing enormous upset, but quite a lot of low key big upsets. And then we've had the evening session, which is, well, actually, full disclosure hasn't quite ended yet. It's temp past 11 in the evening Melbourne time which makes it temp past midday Sully whole time. And Mateo bertini public Corona busta are still on court bertini has a two set still of lead, but it snip and tuck all the way. He could easily take the scenic route here. So we'll keep you updated so you get that out of date tennis news, but assuming the baritone does come through that the evening session has gone according to script. If not been slightly disappointing, and I'm referring to Barty against over when I say that and we will come on to talk about that in a little while, but I think we should talk about the day session first because I wasn't really expecting any of what of what ended up happening in the day session today really a lot of it took me massively by surprise. I think the only result that didn't surprise me was critique of a beating Azarenka but the school line of that still massively surprised me how one sided it was for critique of how was it one of those days Matt when the upsets ended up being infectious? What was going on at Melbourne park today? It was a bit weird, actually, wasn't it? And I must say those first two matches on the rod laver arena powered by our services medicine keys and bar borough critique versus Victoria Azarenka straight up. We're pretty disappointing as contests. I had really high hopes for them. I probably thought both would go through sets. If we take them one at a time, I thought keys, but also was out first and when you get a score line like that, I think it was 6 three 6 one to Madison keys. There has to be two things going on and absolutely medicine keys was awesome. You know, really, really brilliant. Just carried on the way she's been playing all year, really. Teeing off on her shots, a game looked sort of perfectly calibrated. It was powerful, but contained, she had 25 winners come the end of the match. She hit 7 clean winners on return in the first set off by losses served just really dominated on that shot and I think put a lot of pressure on, but also who wrapped up the double fault system actually went on. She was excellent and it was fun to watch Madison keys be like that. But at the same time, but also was way off. You know, she hit the wall, I think, frankly, today she didn't have it in her leg. She didn't have it in her serve. And yes, she did quite well to make the start of the second set competitive, but as soon as she went down another break, it was all over. And it was a disappointing contest, really. Yeah, it was quite jarring to see her struggle physically that much, I think, and maybe in the fullness of time, we'll find out that there was something going on that we don't currently know about, but on current information she was just kind of spent out there from all the tennis of winning the Sydney title and in particular that three setter against Marco Koch duke a couple of days ago played in the blazing heat of the day. You know, she referenced that. I was very surprised I asked her about the heat that she was playing in once again today. And I was expecting her to look at me, look at me funny and say, you know, I'm a Spaniard. I'm fine with the heat thanks, and I'm, you know, she's clearly an incredible athlete in physical specimen and she actually said, yeah, she did struggle in the heat today. And I was really surprised by that. You know, she goodness me. She looked exhausted. She looked gone in the post much press conference. And with the benefit of hindsight, she looked the same after the cost duke, much two days ago, I just thought that two days would be enough for her to recover, but yes, she said she said the heat got to her and you know at that point I'm thinking goodness me is she perhaps not quite as fit as I as I thought she was, but then Maria's Zachary who definitely is fit came in and after her defeat to Jessica pegula, which we'll talk about in a little while, and she also said she struggled in the heat today. So I think if Maria's Zachary is saying it's a challenge, then probably it could get to anyone, but it didn't get to Madison keys, who's just loving life and a really uplifting story we've sort of had smatterings of quotes coming out for her from her, you know, after she won the Adelaide title last week about her new perspective on the sport and where that's come from and you know she elaborated on that a bit today that I had the chance to ask her a few questions in the press conference and you know she said she had previously been feeling like the internal pressure she was placing on herself felt like a literal weight on her chest, and a dark cloud hanging around her, she said she was suffering from anxiety, not sleeping, and she said she was not fun to be around. And she referenced, you know, a stern talking to that somebody gave her the kind of, you know, shook her around and made her think I've got to start doing something something different here and you know she says the difference is I found a way to just enjoy tennis and a love tennis and you love to hear that David. Yeah, you do. And I do feel for her in that way and it's not that dissimilar to what we've heard from Naomi Osaka, isn't it earlier this week about trying to override that system and not get into the whole line supposed to be this? And I'm supposed to be ranked this, and I'm supposed to win this and all the rest of it. And Madison keys has had that since she came along as a teenager. I remember commentating on her when she was 18 years of age in the eastbourne final alongside Martina Navratilova, who was just blowing with how exciting a player she was and she beat Angelique Kerber that day and everybody was predicting this woman is going to be world number one..

"I don't think we should be too disappointed. I think what we've seen from Emma is positive in the way she handled it today. Yeah, definitely. I think given what we saw out in her first match where she nearly got double bagel to seeing how she's done with that win against Sloane Stephens, the fight and determination I think she showed against COVID nich. I think we're in a lot better position. I think we can see with her new team, her new setup. There's opportunities there to make to make improvements to kind of refine and strengthen her game and onto the next tournament. It doesn't matter if it's going to be a Grand Slam or on the WTA Tour. At the moment, it feels like the grand slams are her home and she's going to have to be able to live with the smaller tournaments and the smaller oppositions on the smaller courts. And yeah, again, it will be another back to the back to the grind situation and yeah, getting used to, I think, being a mainstay on the WTA Tour. Definitely. And I mean, let's look at what else we had. This morning, whilst we were all up and about, we obviously had on rod laver arena, big match against Daniel Medvedev and Nick curios, home favorite. And I think this kind of went the way I was expecting curios had never actually lost him ever previously, but their prior matches have been at least three years ago. And then earlier and Medvedev came through this one in four sets, 7 6 6 four four 6 6 two, so curious was able to grab that third set. But you know, I think the most exciting bit of this match for me was probably yeah, maybe that first set tiebreak, thinking, wow, what kind of way is this match going to open up and start out? And then I guess, you know, Kirby was scrubbing that crowd going wild. That was kind of quickly knitting the barred by Devin in the fourth set. But I think Medvedev overcame overcame the crowd overcame kiros antics, but curios essentially two inconsistent doesn't have the doesn't have the weapons. Yeah, it doesn't have a consistency to match someone of Medvedev's caliber. You know, he is potentially going to finish as world number one at the end of this tournament should he win it. So a golf in different I think, and that this match showed that, I think. It was really, really good performance. I think that as you said, that first set, that first set tiebreak was critical because it would have been, I think, very interesting, had Medvedev lost that tie break and gone a set down to curios because I think the crowd would have got in, I think, even earlier, but I think by the time curious did win a set in that third set, I think he was all out of energy really. I think he had to have huffed and puffed and yes he was able to get that break and win and reduce the deficit to two sets to one. But Medvedev just had a second win ready the kiosk that he was not able to deal with and he just kind of steamrolled through that four set 6 two. What I thought was kind of interesting was the end of the match. We had Jim Courier on court talking to Medvedev about his performance and Medvedev kind of talked about the crowd booing him between his first and second serve. And again, that interaction engaged with that he has with the crowd. I think he does it in a way that is not like he's not kind of flustered by it. He doesn't let it get on top of him, but he is certainly, I think aware of it. And we all know the atmosphere and Nick curios matches is sort of party and carnival football like atmosphere. But yeah, again, it was impressive that Medvedev was able to just sort of block that out and get on with it. Yeah, he did handle it well today. Despite them making noises. But I think at the end as well in the interview it sounded like the crowd were booing, which I would think I was thinking if they are booing that's incredibly rude. But I think what they were doing is that Ronaldo suing thing, which is just really strange and Jimmy it's like the new zealot chant, isn't it of the 2020 Australian open? Yeah, I mean, Jim Carrey was trying to explain to him that it wasn't booing that they were doing this thing. I don't know. I think they genuinely think they're actually building. I genuinely think I genuinely think they were. But Medvedev had to tell them in that interview to shush it because he couldn't even hear courier tried to explain what the Sioux chant was. So regardless, they were being disrespectful in that extent anyway. And I just think, I don't really get this suit thing. Why would you do a chance that sounds like boo. I don't really understand it. This is going to end up on a future like pet peeves fan pet peeves podcast episode, isn't it? Yeah, it was a bit, it was a bit there. And it did maybe think about the Australian open, just generally, and the fact that they call it or they do call it that the happy slam. I don't know, I just think this year and also a little bit of last year as well. I look at what's going on and the crowd interaction as well, yes, I know this is a Nick curios match and doesn't necessarily happen at every single match. But it just, I don't know, just doesn't it doesn't feel very happier at the moment, I don't think. And it feels like there's a lot of tension and aggro and it could be jokey. It could be a little bit more intimidating. But it could come from and I think come from the crowd at some points. But yeah, it feels like I don't know, it feels like the DNA of the tournament. I think has changed. Arguably more so than the other three slams over the last few years, potentially because of the pandemic and the vaccine situation. But yeah, it was just something I think I observed, given the interactions and all the noise that I think has been making during that match..

"You know how direct she is and just a completely straight back barbaric. She was she was told by the interview. You've got Elena oster pinko in the next round. She went brilliant. Perfect. Oh, yes, perfect. That was it. He said, what do you think? What do you think about your next opponent? Elena was to Panko perfect. And what she meant was she meant was fine. I'm playing great tennis. I'm enjoying being here. It's all brilliant, you know, I'll take it as it comes, you know, I'm loving the challenge, but it came out as perfect. I'll eat that for breakfast. And maybe she will, because she's, yeah, she's playing brilliantly, but I'm looking forward to it. I would definitely watch that one. You know, I think one of the things is when you're reading off the two or three players that have gone out like kvitova and golf and Fernandez good names and players that were definitely improve any draw, there's still so many players left. It just doesn't matter. And here you are in third round and you're getting matches that I'm setting alarms for. And I think the other thing is that a lot of the top players, the ones we would consider contenders, but cheek, but Azarenka will come on to Osaka. They're playing really well. They're winning convincingly. No one's had any trouble yet. It's just all feels like clean as clean. Exactly. Incidentally, David, you're not fooling anybody. We know you don't need to set an alarm to wake up at three 30 in the morning. And you also not allow allowed to set an alarm for three 30 in the morning. Those are the rules. I've been banned from the WhatsApp group I'm banned until four 30 a.m. at the earliest. And I've kept. But he doesn't understand that we check his last scene. Last scene on WhatsApp. I'm aware of that. I wait until four 31 every day. That's why we haven't caught him out yet. Right then, folks, benci and it's him over happened today. Matt and I are intending to go out and watch this match on the Kiera arena, but events are either overtook. And frankly, the match was done rather more quickly than we expected the straight sets win for Amanda Anderson over she 7 and O four the season so far she'll be playing Naomi Osaka, who I think is 5 O for the season so far having beaten Madison Bengal tonight on the rod laver arena. We'll talk about that in a minute as well. David, you actually watched the match, so I'll get your views on that. My views were they walked out and identical kid. Yeah. And there was also they walked out and identical kit. There was a problematic shadow on the court, and I just thought, oh, tennis. Were you doing ten? This was the match that I'd most looked forward to today, and it just was a much happened. On the schedule, it was definitely the match of the day and I tuned out mentally for the first four games until that shadow had gone pretty much. That was a factor in me whether I'm paying attention to the quarter not because you can't really keep across what's going on until that and actually in those first and a half dozen games. It was close, and they were really testing one another, and I thought I was quite interested in what Ben should seem to be doing. It was a combination of effective play I felt which was taking the ball really early and trying to rush in this room over and it was that that element of it was working for and it reminds you what a talent benches is that she sort of deals with the fact that she doesn't have as big a ball strike as her opponent by doing that. But then I felt she really got it wrong tactically that I don't know how often this was happening, but I saw a few points in a row, where it felt to me like she was just trying to take on the innocent over backhand. Because she raised her own backhand. It was kind of like I write my own backhand so highly. Come on then. Let's have it. And so she took it on. And as you say, terrible idea. And she came on stuck pretty pretty quickly and also she then had a really long medical timeout because I know this because I took my had to give my iPad to my daughter who was having breakfast at the time and she wanted to watch. She'd never seen a nismo before. And she's watching and she says, dad, can we change the channel? Because all I'm seeing at the moment is that in the bench, it's complaining to the trainer, the train is getting too close to her and in her face while administering the treatment. So can we watch something else? So I did, yeah, turned it over button by the time I turned back, it was pretty much over and Aniston over was efficient and ruthless. You'll need to be against no mere sarca in the next round, won't she. She was asked about that much in her uncle interview at the time Osaka hadn't hadn't won through. In fact, I think, you know, it was politely put to her. Your face Naomi Osaka all Madison Bengal in the next round. Can you give us your thoughts on both these two possible opponents subtext? A lot more thoughts on Naomi Osaka please. And she said, and I loved this. She said, I've been wanting to play Naomi for a while. And I love that. Oh yeah. But I love that, you know, I don't know. I just love that. I love it. She's been so thinking that big because they're quite honestly, but she's been in the wilderness. She really has. And I feel for her, the reason the reason for it, I really feel for her losing her dad at that age and that stage in her career as well is just desperately sad whenever I think about it. But she's been in the wilderness since that breakthrough. And others have come along and taken the line like for her and will the talk when she reached that 29 teen French Open semifinal was that she was born for the line like, you know, she was bred for it. She completely belonged there. And then it was just snatched from her and life dealt her an incredibly cruel blow, but I loved that she's thinking this big. You know, she's thinking, yeah. I want this test. I want to test myself against the very best. And I do wonder how much Darren Cahill has to do with that. I guess it's kind of a chicken and egg thing. You know, the fact that she picked up the phone. And called Darren Cahill, you know, that's a signal if intent. I think. And I suspect, you know, Darren Cahill would want assurances from someone who's going to work with they're going to give back what he would expect from a player. So yeah, I mean, Matt had a Darren Cahill experience this evening. I was going to say I know for a fact that Darren Cahill was out scouting either nearing Osaka or Madison Pringle probably probably keeping a closer eye on him. As you say, because neither of us could actually get in to the rod laver arena for a moment. We both turned up at the same gangway and we got there just as the second set started and of course the rule in tennis is that you're not allowed to go in until the change of ends. But they don't count the first game of the set as a change of ends because they don't sit down. Stick that on the list with faff, matching outfits and shadows. Yes, sort it out list. So stupid just you could sort it out in just a click done. You don't have any debate, there's no downsides to getting rid of that rule. Just do it now. Yes. I mean, because not everyone can use the line that Darren Cahill used very politely and very nicely. I must say, he said, I am, I am the coach of the player who faces the winner and me too, said Matt, me too. He said it would be really useful to be able to get in because otherwise we're going to we're going to miss a couple of extra games in the end. There was a compromise. He was allowed to go in and sit a bit higher up and I sort of piggybacked on this. Can I go in and just sit there and I was led in as well anyway, that was my parent..

Australian Open 2021: Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev Meet for the Title

"The crusade for the men's singles crown comes to an end tomorrow. And when the undisputed king of rod laver arena novak djokovic takes on russian number-one neil medvedev the world number one djokovic. Gunning for a history-making ninth championship in melbourne. While the russian authors seeking his twenty first consecutive win and first major title to preview the match. I'm joined by not edwards and commentator. Nick mcardle nick at the start of in fact two weeks before this we had you on the show podcast and you picked this matchup is that what led you to make that cole way back. Then let's say lucked out. Let's be honest that wasn't necessarily total. Total fluke made many wrong picks before but coming in you know we talk about the twenty one matches in a row for osaka. It's twenty in a row for daniil. Medvedev the non includes a win over novak djokovic close twenty twenty i think medvedev has really come into his own as someone expects himself not only to go deep. Atp events which we've seen the last couple of years but now to really do at at the grand slam so the drop laid out for him. I think he's played to each match to the level now. Can he bring an eight time. Grand slam australian open champ. Seventeen time major winner novak djokovic. Can he meet that level in a final thoughts really eighty s. What i love most is after medvedev bates itsy pass in that semi final is that he said stride away. All the pressure is on novak. He just load him up because he's plight fonsi before and never lost and it sorta. But i love how he just playfully. Put that out there and look. I think he'll come at. He'll show you'll be a little bit nervous. But i think he's just going to swing freely and that backhands i mean. Gosh they both have terrific backhands. But it's going to be like jock itch playing a twenty five year old vision of himself. It's going to be such an interesting match. I really count. Wait for the all similar. It can not just in court croff necessarily but as personalities both very eloquent and sort of personable somewhat chiming in front of the camera but they do have this white line fever as we know totally. I love those points that you've made and i think medvedeva's become more comfortable without. We sought the us open a couple years ago in the crowd. Really got against him and he used that as fuel which i think djokovic has have that in the past that in the past for sure for sure for jovic against rafa roger. He's felt that too. I really think that it is an opportunity for medvedev lake. Nona saying just swing for the fences and the scary thing is when he swings for the fences. Oftentimes the ball goes in. And i really think he's going to use that experience of beating novak in london last year at the atp finals. He'll really be geared up by that. Yeah i think so too. And i'm really looking forward to. I think the one area that novak can probably try to exploit daniels is that netplay. He's not very good. Let's let's be honest when it comes to netplay so if he can drawer him in a little bit and maybe draw that out. I think that puts pressure on daniel. Bit amid gets off to a flying start is going to be hard to stop.

Robert Whittaker Withdraws from UFC 234 vs. Kelvin Gastelum Due to Hernia Injury

"The case you missed it. Breaking news UFC two thirty four has taken a massive hit and there's no sunshine in here. No, sunshine, where any MMA fans are especially the ones in Australia because everyone was looking forward to Robert Whittaker the first Australian UFC champion getting an opportunity to finally defend that title middleweight title on his home turf in Melbourne later this evening, Rod Laver Arena sold out in ten minutes against Kelvin gasoline finally getting to see him back. Well, we just found out twenty minutes ago. The fight is off management has just confirmed with me as well. The fight is off. They're going to issue. A statement in a matter of moments Whitaker out due to a hernia fight cancelled Israel Sonny Anderson Silva's now the new main event so how does this affect Kelvin gasoline? How did he find out where does he go from? Here. Let's talk to his manager. Elliot does these who's joining us on the phone right now? Ali how are you? Oh, no. I'm good. It can be better. But you know, it's commander of the game, you know, seniors, and we have to get adjusted. When did you guys find out? I just find out dot com. Probably thirty minutes ago. Have a hernia. The hospital and now they have to perform. You know, he's a great champion. I always put it on the line. Unfortunately. He's not fighting. Twelve weeks heart camp make sacrifices, but you know, it wasn't awake cuts related issues. And he's just. As workers. Warrior. It will not more injury or even hard injury. Doc, even more from fighting. A great guy. We wish him nothing. But the best. Wish must be recovered his management just told me that he's heavily sedated as we speak and he's going into surgery, right? This moment. So like, I said a horrible tournaments for Robert Whitaker. What does this mean for Kelvin? What does the UFC told you? I know it's very fresh. But. You know is he going to get another title shot? What are they going to do with the belt? You have any idea. Day right now, I get to speak with Dana white. He said I personally. Calvin Calvin is the number one contender. He's gonna see what happened. Out. We're going to go ahead and see maybe the winner between Anderson Israel. Covered. You know? Maybe you can do it thirteen. You know, what's what's I'm kind of looking forward to. But let's see what happened. Did they try to keep Kelvin on the card was that ever discussed? No does not disgusting. I spoke to. Dana. And that does not discussed that. Oh, you know. Listen, I think you have a good minivan. Anderson Silva is great. I'm not sure this is going to be a five round or real. Oh. You know, it is what it is. I feel horrible rubber Whitaker. Yeah. I feel bad for coffee too. Under the right. How is he handling? It has been handling the news Kuban workers. Okay. Calvin was ready. We was ready. The Bishop of his life and. We believe he was going to be that, you know, that middleweight champ. But robert. No injuries taken away from the fight. And like, I said, you know. Nothing but respect and we wish him nothing, but speeder recovery, and I hope he's okay. We're talking to. You're not gonna hear me, you know, me get me on the program talking trash in promoting and get on people. But certain situation we have to be human. Absolutely. I think everybody out there. Everyone to give respect keep Robertson. They prayer. I wish nothing but the best talking to manager Elliot. Bill Aziz here on area who wanna show on ESPN radio's presented by Uber. Breaking news out of the world to the USC USC to thirty four tonight in Melbourne Australia on pay per view, Robert Wood. It covers coming gasping for the middleweight title cancelled that flight has been canceled because Robert Whitaker is going under the knife. In a matter of moments in Australia for a hernia certainly wish him the best. I'm curious Ali is Kelvin going to get paid. How's this gonna work because you just went through a training camp? What's the deal? I'm certain UFC has told you what they're gonna do. Can you? Tell us. Yeah. Always come through for me, you know. And he said he was going to kick out. You know, I understand you know, he went to a camp. And and you put a lot of money into it investment. A lot of money into it. And at the end of the day. This is. You know, I'm not worried about him. I know he will be paid. Thanks for doing this Ali very sorry about the news our best to to Kelvin as well. Speak for everyone. Everyone is bummed out about this. We're looking forward to it. I appreciate you coming on for a few minutes. He will take care. He was. And I have no doubt in my mind. Dana white and you'll see them because they're taking care of my guys sounds good. Thank you Ellie. Let's go back to the phone lines. Now talk to more fans. Breaking news again Robert Whitaker out of tonight's made event. Ernie a- surgery scheduled for Madame moments from now in Melbourne devastating news, not only for the UFC. But for Robert Whitaker who continues to get all these freaking bad breaks time. And again, he had shingles. Prior to the last time that they were in Melbourne with him headlining that card was supposed to be against Luke rock hold now. Just hours before the event he has to pull out and is going under the knife Joseph Detroit. How are you? Good. How about you area? I'm doing okay. Good. I just got a few questions for you that I think they should let the winner of tonight. And Calvin fight for the official title Whitaker should be stripped. It's just my opinion. Well, I wanna see how long he's out for this is definitely a bad break. But I typically like to subscribe to the rule that if you don't defend your title or you're not scheduled to fight within a year. Then you should be stripped in this case he last fought in June. So let's see how far he's out. Let's see how long he's out for. I should say let's see how long of a recovery this is needed. And then let's talk about stripping in. But I think right now, it's a little premature to talk about stripping. Because he pulled out last year knee injury. I think it's better for him. You don't have to take some time off. But my second question is not question opinion. True. They're gonna make McGregor verse Copley for the I think it should be Tony Emporia for the interim. Yeah, that's Donald Surani just talking right now from what I'm hearing the interim belt isn't being discussed. I don't think a belt is needed for that kind of fight. I don't think a belt elevates that kind of fight certainly not an interim title. So at this juncture, I think that's just cowboy talking and look he's going to get the fight. It seems like that's the front runner. I don't think you need to push for an interim thing anyone wants it, quite frankly, I think the interim belt would would almost like soil that that fight. I don't think anyone wants to see an interim belt online. I don't think either guys should be fighting for an interim belt when you have guys like Tony dust emporium ally. Doing what they've done as of late. Let's go back to the phone lines and say Hello to Corey in California, Corey how are you? Hey, I'm good. How you doing? I'm doing. Okay. Some some disappointing news, but we still have a car tonight. But yeah, it's it's a bummer. These things happen from time to time in in mixed martial arts and. I mean, this is a big one especially because it's the Australian who's now out of the card. Yeah. Honestly, like you said before man, I don't know how these injuries happened the day of the fight. How much are you actually doing? Such a serious injury. But I don't know it's fight game. And it happens. But. So my original copies I called about it. Now trying to shake up. I was gonna say do you think that Anderson is? His own legacy a little bit by taking these bigger fights with the much younger guys are like the fights with whatever, obviously, they're bigger fights. And he's a big name. And do you think that you have tarnished by throwing them into a fight with Israel, just because if Anderson, but then it turns around and now Anderson is card having a big name for Israel to fight. So do you think that enersen should lay off he's bigger fights? Or do you think he's finer you think his legacy Jenner hurt in the end after all this look if we're talking about tarnishing legacies? The only thing that's maybe tarnished his legacy. So to speak is the fact that he was caught with PD's twice other than that. I mean, I don't think opponents will tarnish anyone's like seeing fact to meet on the elevates your legacy because you're finding the toughest guys even as you're in your swansong so to speak. I like the fact that he's taken this fight. Everyone thought it was a mistake. It's an opponent that he thinks he could beat he's fourteen years older. He feels like maybe he's not as experiences him. Maybe he hasn't fought the kind of competition that he's. So I don't think this is. I mean, imagine he pulls it off great story George Foreman. It's like Randy tour all over again. So I honestly don't think that he's tarnishing his legacy on this one. Let's go to one quick call before we take another break Hamilton, Ohio. What's up man areas? A pleasure speaking with you. I want to go back to the UC days, or so I started hearing your voice. Boy that was handled by the UFC. I am so proud that you've come to where you had with the hard work. You've done to put yourself in today's position. Thank you know, as far as what's happening transplanted melborn sad. And that's the core. So the nature of the game. My question to you is at forty three year old is now put himself in position we he's probably going to be having to save this card. I understand that. There's not a lot of four weeks on your old man at his weight. They can do anything except maybe defend themselves. Does he really have a chance to see wing? And do you see this only in the heavyweight World War forty yours can compete one or two times? This gentleman is not tarnishing his world. It just a building him being allowed to do this because of his name and his past of fighting really realistically can this man really compete at this level with this young kid. I mean that remains to be seen. I don't think it's a bad matchup firm. In fact, I'd say he's too big of an underdog. I'm curious to see if he can turn back the clock tonight. But yeah, it's a great call to great point. The best news is this flight hasn't been canceled. So we're about to find out in a matter of moments in a matter of hours, whether or not Anderson Silva can hang with Israel to Sonya after the break. We're going to be joined by my colleague, my partner shell son. And he's in Melbourne. I want to get his take on things. He knows coming gasoline almost better than anyone. He was the one who drafted him on the ultimate fighter way. Back when devastating news Robert Whittaker's out of tonight's UFC two thirty four main event. And I just got details about how it all went down. I'll tell you about all that and more right after the break. You're listening to Hawaii's may show right here on ESPN radio and ESPN app this
