"Him. I don't know if i have enough time. To get the fact. On why jack nicholas the golden bear is also a raging asshole of seismic in gargantuan proportions likewise one of the littoral smallest on the face of the earth. And unless. you're a horse racing person which i'm guessing most of you. Aren't you have no idea who can't disarm as an aside from being a raging alcoholic. He also happens to be a raging asshole as one. When i rank assholes in this earth jack nicholas is number one with a bullet and it is not even close second and it's a far far back second but second nonetheless is that jockey kent storm. Who's probably listening the show right now. Well into his third handle of paramount. Vodka i'm not going to get into it. Just know that those to take the cake for me. I don't believe. I have pulled the curtain fully back on why jack nicholas and can't disarm. Oh are assholes and this is this is not the platform for it this evening but at some point in twenty twenty one i will reveal the jack nicholas and kanter storm. Oh asshole mold and you too will become non fans of. There's a instant in an instant. I guarantee it. I mean none of you are fans of kansas normal anyway. But i don't know who follows golf out of you three. Or if you think jack nicklaus is a good guy but trust me. He's a bag of seismic proportions. And my story will only served to solidify his ass holiness to you and you will also hate him to be continued. next up. rod gray was back on the show. I was talking to sterling ball in the first hour about how rod was very forthcoming. And letting that truth. Be shown. Finally on the hall of fame and rod. And i were barbie each other a little bit back and forth on that very subject. A lot of money was probably spent upfront on having guy fieri come in and be the face plate. I mean let's be honest driving. Should we get him on the hall of fame. Absolutely not absolutely have. I am not sitting sitting your seat. It's not worth you. And i have over tonight. Only have limited amount of time but there were reasons and honestly what better than have him come back the next year and be the mc of the whole event. I mean it was a great year. Great put johnny and it was great to put him in and then come back next year and he wants to. Mc the whole event. What a great way to do that. But why not just agree on some reduced appearance fee. Instead of putting him into the barbecue hall of fame you know what. I'm saying there no fee but i'm saying in putting me the very fabric of the barbecue hall of fame. He's done nothing to get into the barbecue faint see. I'm gonna leave this year but when we started this we have three categories in one category was a face and we tried and it didn't honestly go over all that well but i stand behind our decision to put guy guidance. I duke was food and he does a lot for food. It's still paying off these barbecue health. I'm sorry you didn't get greg. Nothing to do with it. I i could care line up your ass about i gas. We gotta be kidding me. Yeah so i got kaba. Somebody had that in their bits two. I think that was duck. Doug i saw you feverishly writing a note here there. You have a reaction on who is he talking about in terms of the face that was supposed to be other than guy. Fear it well. So what he's saying is originally. When this do hall of fame was being rolled out through the american royal there were three categories. There was business. There was faster and was celebrity. So he's saying laboratories as celebrity and that was guy. John did you have a rebut. At the cobb is the best part. And you can talk to sterling and rod all day long. And they're never gonna change and they're gonna keep going. It's it's horse. Meat and horse meat is going to happen in two. Twenty twenty one. We're bringing it back. Twenty seventeen twenty seventeen and original cova could only have two. That's right thousand seventeen original Then we have some We have a meathead one coming up right here. A we learned in august august eleventh meathead refuses to cover his grills. I have never put a cover on my max. I've had one for years. Never had an issue with rushed. Where do you keep outdoors in chicago. Not covered uncovered. I'm coming into your the user abuser. How dare i just lazy. Plus who they should be able to take it. They should be this. Lazy takes one. Second when i'm done cooking. My grill is hot to cool off to you. Got dishes to you got to eat. How long do you think is gonna stay. You think it's going to stay hot for an hour. It's not an offset cooker. That's how i beat had if you're gonna invest how much is this cooker for the retail. Three three grand. You're not gonna take five minutes to put on a cover from the elements. I mean couple of endure. I have uncovered. I don't even have a cover for russell. Coverer i am now sort of. I'm better you know. Because now. I hear your voice in my head every time i go out and i look out of my window. They're not a here. Greg on dick and so i go on a cover one. Not all some halfway there. Yeah that's the best. Do right now is the best. I'm comfortable with right now john. We're used to meet head was not a cover was that. Was that something that you learned that day it was. I learned that. And i was surprised. I can defend a bid on a mac. Have you got a three thousand dollar mac. It's made to sit outside. it's no different than a giant old hickory that sits outside year round but the majority of us not to speak for all of us. don't have three thousand dollar pellet grills and if i was lucky enough to have one i'd spend the three hundred dollars to cover it up so i was really surprised. He's in chicago. How long they're gonna come apart. Doug were you surprised to.

"So I don't know if my if it's good ever is not good if they were all given sixes and sevens at least I would know that I really had a problem they needed to fix it. Now I've talked a lot of a lot of the top cooks, Chris, Schaffer, at a recent cook, a breadline Iger had him on this week's Of the show and those guys have kind of talked me off the ledge a little bit. and. Ask. Them. What's the deal. Judging this year in his man we're going we're undergoing the same thing. It's frustrating for us to the differences there cooking twenty, five times a year, and they can they can bounce back next week. And I cook five times a year. So this is my only shot, but Brad had great advice. He said you gotTa Treat Twenty Twenty S to throw out said, it's weird. This year judges are Are neater not getting all certified judges contests, and also some of these judges only judging one or two contests this year and he said it's just they're out of rhythm to just like Cook. That doesn't Cook often the judge does it doesn't judge often enough. He loses his rhythm judging. Judging his always and ongoing topic within kcbs probably other sanctioning bodies as well. But I've followed closely KCBS over the last ten twelve years, and for as long as I have been doing the show that has been a continuing topic. Is it just a convenient item to rehash and the Cook should take a closer look at their process or do you think that at some point there is really legitimate judging issue that somehow needs to be resolved. I think there's an issue that needs to be looked at. As far as what is the starting-point mean guys who were certified twenty years ago maybe starting at nine and judging. From there some guys who may have been recently certified. Perhaps they're starting at seven and in adjusting off of that I, there's no unification as far as I can tell is. We need to maybe have a recertification for judges. It can be as simple as AB, thirty minute online tutorial every year just to get everyone on the same page and say this is this is what we're going to start at. Let's have a common ground, the kind of base the judging around. Are you surprised that. There are a number of there are the number of barbecue competitions that are going on right now do you think there would be more? Do you think there will be less where we are right now? Well. Yeah. You don't go back to two margin. We didn't know that we would have any and we've been fortunate in the central part of the country. Starting in about mid June, we've had consistent amount contests in our in our region. So. And and that's also brought in the points chasers where every contest you go to you top notch teams, which is that's a lot of the appeal to me I. I enjoy the aspect of being around these guys win or lose or I'm no doubt a field filler there is but I enjoy being there and soaking up the atmosphere and being a part of it and once in a while getting lucky enough to. To have a good turn in score. Well. If you're at one of these events in, there's thirty forty teams. Are you generally feeling safe? Do you think that you're not being put in any type of potentially? Health Hazard situation. I was a little apprehensive, the first event we did. But, I felt very safe since then I generally my experiences going back the four or five years I've done. This is everyone pretty much sticks to their own space anyway in a not everyone seems to respect everyone's a social distance and. You go to the cooks, meetings or indoor activities people are masking up. So that's that's the main thing. And how? I'm perfectly fine with that, I think barbecue cooks hard notorious for being extremely. Clean and sanitary anyway. So it's it's I think it's been good. The State Cooking Association really seems to have taken off during this time of those who compete in foods board have had that outlet in sea popularity seems to be as hot. Now, as it ever has been perhaps they're even at a growth spurt considering everything that's happening. Do you think that they're momentum will carry into twenty twenty one or at least through the end of the year here in twenty twenty or do you think that they will tiny at some point? You know they've they've rocketed so fast and you would think they are going to plateau out at some point in the near future. Right. Now it's it's a very popular, a popular boards, less affordable ours more affordable less. It's less expensive. You can go out and spend one day rather than to a less equipment. I even became an sea certified judge this year. So I haven't gone the dark side at least on the state side and I'm judging over there. Do you think I've heard varying opinion both from a competition point while for steak and for barbecue that you should be a first, you should see what's winning and how you're being taught as a judge. So when you turn it around and are actually being a contestant, you have much more of a working knowledge on what you should be doing in order to give to the judges to give your self the best chance of getting a good score. The I think that's a good point I would like to become. KCBS judge. Just the opportunity to have classes or seen within two hundred miles of where I'm located in the last three years. And that's the thing that kcbs needs to do. I think that should be on the front burner is try to recruit some newer and younger judges to come along and grow the sport in that area long with trying to bring along some younger and a new teams. Do you think that? There is a legitimate concern of whatever the next generation of competition barbecue or looks like do you think there's any interest in doing? That's great point. You know you wonder ten years from now will people be cooking earlier will be enough judges to judge the things early be pulling people off the street. In you look you you go to contest and the average age of the judges or is this well north of sixty and so were the new judge is GonNa come from the you need you need to start recruiting now I. Think. Bundle Scranton can be found putting out new episodes of his tailgate barbecue guys show once a week you release on Thursdays idol. We do Tuesday evenings. Tuesday choosing normally and. New episode out this week with Brad Line. Iger getting basted fresh off a victory in Savannah Tennessee in Mark Lambert who has an interesting sea state contest coming up or the answer Larry category this whole hog. The expecting any more than three people to do whole hawk. That's a pretty expensive. He has it's a six hundred dollar entry Pu but they supply the hogs they're gonNA treat it like an sea contest they supply the the meat and you draw for order of selection hundred, thirty pound hogs on average and a pretty good price fund. so He's already had seven or eight to entries in he's hoping for twenty to thirty. Would you do that? I have no talk about embarrassing myself. Cooking bad barbecue I'm sure I could really literally butcher a hog. I mean. In the literal sense of packing it up and then probably cooking it to incineration. Are you watching any? Television on Netflix. No I haven't I haven't been able to watch that series. I've heard mixed reviews on on this. As it is the great American Barbecue showdown. Showdown the name escapes me sounds like some people enjoyed some people don't I'm not really a huge fan of the. So many shows it of tried to follow pitmasters seems like no one's been able to pull that off. Lender would you rather wear a monitor that beeps when you're lying or beeps contracted to.

"The Lai fire industry especially competitions he is also a competitive barbecue cook himself. So let's go ahead and hit the hotline and welcome first timer to this shell. Lendl Strand. Hey. Good evening. Thanks. I am happy to have you and appreciate you making time for the show me and I know you're a big sports guy. So we have playoff baseball, of course, none more important than right here in the rock and Roll Hall of Fame City as we have a non sold-out Jacobs field, I'm sorry of progressive field. Here as we are I think are we still losing to the Yankees? It was like five to two last I looked. So certainly unfortunate start. But who cares about any of that? Oh, and we're hosting the presidential, the main chairman that I mean. You. Know what? You tell everybody how cool Cleveland is crying out loud. I love Cleveland. I've been to Cleveland covering sporting events a few times over the years. Man's great city. Near, was Jacobs field that can the mid nineties yeah. It's a great old hub while the there used to be an old hall but now it's a great old hall on its own. Give us a quick background about your about yourself professionally and where you were headquartered at current. On located in Springfield Missouri, which is about two and a half hour south of Kansas City in about two hours North Tulsa. And I was thirty six years as a sports writer here at the Springfield Nuclear newspaper left the business late in two thousand fifteen and my buddy. All Steve Taylor had also been a newspaper business for a long time. He left years before I did. And we always were out cooking in our backyards weekends. He was a neighbor of mine for many years. And decided we all? We had an opportunity started barbecue show when the play by play announcer for the local women's D. One basketball team who was a programming director at a local station. Guy Kind of have joked, jokingly asking one time about need to have a barbecue show that also talk sports. So that's how we got the Toga Guys Barbecue show rolling on low power local radio in two thousand sixteen. And then you've said progress than to just doing podcast. Did you see that there were more legs on podcast versus keeping it on low power terrestrial radio? Exactly I you know we we were on local radio three years in probably one year too many in decided that we all do and I thought we were had had some really good gas but nobody were nobody was hearing him. So cited take it to podcast at the beginning of twenty, two, thousand, nine hundred and I think that was a wise move and it's growing show a bunch. What's the best part of the show for you? A twelve to me just just having having great guests in trying trying to pick their brains in a learn some things not only for myself, but try to try to involve the backyard cook as well. Always try to get these guys to give a tip or two along the way along the course of an interview to help the guy in his backyard. Make better barbecue. And it's been good. It was back to watching Barbecue Barbecue pitmasters in the early two thousand and teens in see these guys on TV in in once I started. Trying to get them on the on the radio show. I was just amazed at that. They said, yes first of all. And then it would just so cool to have these guys on that in it. was like having. A. Sports Hero on on my radio on on the radio. Show. And his just rule is really cool. I still is. Being joined by Lendl Scranton Co host of the tailgate guys barbecue show tailgate guys bbq dot com is the website. If you want to go ahead and check that out, you can subscribe to the podcast as well. What's been the most difficult part of doing the show? Obviously, this year is a different beast on its own, but prior to covid nineteen and not having to do shows separate from each other was the most difficult thing that you found doing it there for the first year. So. Well just the the the prep-work that took was when you're working another job when a real job, you're trying to lineup guest in in do research and and I really WANNA go into show prepared I'm not just going to have a guy on in just wing it. I want I want to be prepared for to try to have a good interview and you know sometimes in this in this business I've been able to lineup guests for weeks in advance sometimes I've gone down until the night before trying to find somebody. So it it. Kinda. Goes in cycles right now we're in good shape for the next couple of weeks, but there have been times that You know you don't know who I'm going to have on next week and that's a worry at times, but we always seem to pull it out. But let's discuss competition specifically forbid especially the contests you have been doing recently as I follow you on social as I listened to Tailgate guys show is I'm getting in my morning runs you seem to be not so happy. Well, you seem to be pretty happy with your turn ins, but the judges don't seem to share the same excitement as they start putting pen to paper in the form of scoring. So is there anything that you can point to as to why those feelings aren't more mutual? Well first off. I I've I've Cook my share of terrible barbecue this year I wanna make it clear that. I don't deserve top townsend everything I turned in. For instance in this judging thing goes both ways a earlier this year I could dribs at a contest and they would just a horrible cook. I let my fire get away from me. The meat side of the ribs were a basically a incinerated they were black. So I turned to flip the ribs over in in the turn box and we tournament upside down bone side up ribs and attorney box. I ask Chris Schaffer from heavy smoke after turn-ins as a man have you ever had that happened with ribs we were you've tournament bone side up and he just laughed at me said, no, never had that happen as well. I'm just trying to avoid being DA L. in this contest there was no chance by tournament beat site up. Paying and there was a judge that gave me eight, nine nine, which almost a perfect score on ribs for that. Ternan. So I that judge should have been investigated for for terrible scoring for giving me a good score that day. I've had any number of interviews over the course of the show with other folks that. Say that. There's an old saying amongst competition cooks food is rarely as bad as the judges say rarely as good as the cook thinks it is agree or disagree. I think that's very accurate. I think the maddening part is this year in particular when when you see the inconsistencies It were a couple of judges or giving all nine, and then a couple of judges are giving a middle of the road. Then two judges were given you a sixes and sevens..

"Well. On it could be any number of things. I'll say this we had that resurgence after nine eleven and it really started to take off and. Got A lot of it got the networks are tensions. You've got a lot of sponsors attention. And then we burn through all of that and if you'll notice and I got throughout twenty twenty, because twenty twenty doesn't count. In the last couple of years. The. Big contests have gone away. Some of the sponsorship has gone away. You know there's other places to put their money and I think we're just in a cycle and I think the cycle is a downward cycle right now and I think in a few years we'll see cycle back up again I do it I just think it's cyclical and I just think there's times when we're when we're in front of people better than in times that we aren't I don't know social media plays into it. Because I'm not really that great on social media but but. I I. Really Don't know the answer exactly but I know that I know it's all changed I know it's changed. Well, you won't find him hitting the circuit next year and the old forms, but you never know, maybe catch them out in a contest here there or as he had said on a sea event, those are. Continuing to gain popularity perhaps nothing more popular in twenty twenty competition since than sea but you can get his rubs and sauces, and they're all over the place in stores and everything right? Right. Yeah Yeah we were in people knew us in Kroger were not in Kroger which is fine. It it. It wasn't a fit for what we were doing. So we're in a ton of barbeque specialty stores around the country and and it's doing well I mean anytime you grab a bottle of you barbecue off the shelf. It's GONNA be fresh because it's all moving really well, it's it's hard for me to keep up with it honestly someday. So I'm really happy with that. Really proud of it. And I'm really happy to be on your Greg. I didn't realize I've been for years but. It's always great to come on the show. We were having that discussion today about Youtuber but what about what about Barbecue podcast I? Mean you see people those people jumping anything they can do what you're doing and they try it for a while and it's hard man it's hard to do it well and and then they disappear. You've seen them come and go the way I've seen barbecue is coming up you know it no doubt about it you know him as the master of Pellet. Envy he is also a twenty twenty barbecue central show guest all the famer. It's Rod Gray Rod thanks so much appreciate catching up. Let's do it again. Thanks for having me, but you got very is rod grain right there. From Pella Envy. Wow. What a great segment with ride sharing it all. and. Not Holding back, which is what you've come to know when love..

"So. If your identity I'm not saying this is your identity. But if people identify you with competition or live fire cooking is that something that you would continue to do in some form or would you just get outside the box? Well. You know I still have barbecue which are the rubs and sauces and the ones that made me so successful and they're actually really doing amazing this year, which is strange sort of I sort of understand it. And all I what I really didn't I never worked on that. Initially, I never wanted to have rubs and sauces I went on pitmasters and and somebody said ever GonNa, do it now the time to do it? So I worked really hard did it and I think they're great products and a lot of people think they're great products and that you notice I don't just throw two or three more sauces in the line in four or five more rubbing the line because if it's not something I use competition I don't want to sell it now I may I may step outside of that whole idea do a couple of things I'm. Thinking about but I've never worked hard on barbecue and maybe it's time to do some of that expanded and you know do some things maybe sponsor a segment on the barbecue central show you know stuff like that and maybe I should work on that a little more and maybe I jump in and do some of the Scharff Fun You know I own a PK grill. So that makes me qualified to do it at least that's what I understand So I think I took two or three total ever, but maybe do a little bit of that I. Don't know if I'd be successful at it I I I think. The judging mayor is is is random more random than it is for kcbs stuff but I I don't care. I don't care about that some days it works out some days other keep putting the right food in and you'll get your name call and that's how it works I. I listened to your segment about the guy who was asking him if he was just cooking food and and not getting calls man I knew a lot onto a lot of people on the circuit who they never had a bad cook, which is completely impossible. We know that was the thing that sharing I learned as we cook more and more contests we. Learned that, we'll put our best foot in the box. We know when it's good food we know when it's bad food, we get plenty of calls win categories when the food is embarrassingly bad and then never hear our name be mid pack when the stuff was outstanding, we just not wasn't our day on the table it's going to happen. But when you when you have that kind of familiarity with with what what usually scores and and you have a little bit of humility knowing that even your best stuff not going to get a call Danes and your stuff that's not so great going to get a call on some days man. More. Enjoyable at a at a at awards than than the people who are chasing down the REP, waving their scores out of trying to catch him to to rip a new one. That's just a part of that. What turns me off about Barbecue today honestly is you're not going to win them all. No one's going to win them all. It doesn't happen not barbecue especially, that was going to be my follow up question from competition standpoint you know the Within your main time in there, I referred to that is the golden era of Barbecue. There were teams like you and I you know Darren still doing it but there are a number of other teams that were really good back then that really aren't doing it anymore I could probably mentioned names and most of the people that listen to this show probably don't even know who they are, which is sad to say but I mean you certainly in the middle of all of that and I would say it's trended down over the last three or four maybe five years. What do you think attributes of a lustre loss aside from people chasing the judges down as you had mentioned what what else do you think might have? Caused the.

"It's not worth you hashing over tonight because we only have a limited amount of time but there were reasons and honestly what better than have him come back next year and be the MC of the whole event I mean it was a great year. Sierra. Great to put Johnny and it was great to put him in and then come back next year and he wants to the whole event. What what a great what a great way to do that. But why not just Agree on some. Reduced appearance fee. Instead of putting him into the Barbecue Hall of fame and know what I'm saying I there no fee but I'm saying. In. Lures. Putting man. The very fabric of the Barbecue Hall of fame he's done nothing to get into the barbecue halt faint. See, and I'm gonNA leave this year. But when we started it three categories in one category was. A face and we tried and it didn't honestly go over all that. Well but I stand behind our decisions if AGAI GUY IN I. barbecue was food and he does a lot for food it. It's it's still paying off these in the Barbecue Hall of fame I'm sorry you didn't get in Greg is nothing to do with it. I. Could care less. You gotta come up your ass about my kidney. Yes you gotta be kidding me. All right. So enough of the Shenanigans Ron, I pulled up your last appearance here on this show and believe it or not just been four years since you are on the show and sponsorship segment was the sponsorship segment which by the way still happens to be a very popularly downloaded portion. Also one that as I just talked to folks at random they will reference the sponsorship segment. So but I mean, you know your segments have always been one of the more popular ones anyway way you took part in a lot of roundtables as well where you were very free in charing all your information so. Long Way to get to what's Rodman up to. Absolutely nothing. I've been hiding out here in my house waiting for covid nineteen to be over. Doing, projects around the house and in in the art I haven't cooked anything only in the house barbecue and honestly. The grossest boring thing to tell you what I've been doing lately. That's about it over the last four years. I, mean not just the I mean everybody years socked right. But I mean for four years you haven't been hiding out. I cooked good until May of of nineteen. And diagnosed with prostate cancer that nobody knows it up, announcing it on you. So really and we did radiation into the fall, and then it took me some time to recover from that, and then before this season could get started covid nineteen hit. So just laying low the closer Sheri's working from home I'm actually in her office a duped, you got completely different setup than the one that. You and I practiced on earlier Yes. He does stuff behind the scenes folks So I'm sitting in her office because there's some carpet on the floor I'm using her career buds so that we've got a little better audio and know trying to make a go this well I mean it sounds great and the background is exceptional. There's no wall smack which I certainly appreciate from an audio standpoint. So you just said, you just announce here on the show that you were diagnosed with prostate cancer. So I mean prognosis wise You know where we add them, they get everything and it's you know now gutting through this whole making sure we've gotten all of it out The accompanying processes. It's it's funny Greg. I don't feel like I ever had cancer really, but I was definitely diagnosed with it. Actually I was diagnosed at eighteen in March of eighteen, and then a year later, they did some testing to see. You just disappeared. That's all right. Don't worry about you just keep going. Sorry sorry and and and then we did a one year checkup and they were like, no, we thought we could just watch this for a while, but it's time to do something. So we picked radiation because mostly because of my size and So we start I started radiation in July of Nineteen went till September twenty third of nineteen. So it's been exactly one year. You never know I mean they just keep testing you you never know I guess that it's one hundred percent or advocated you're in remission and and you're you're you're I'm sorry bouncing my leg telling you this not that comfortable but you. You you just keep checking your number as long as your numbers are good your PSA than then you're in pretty good shape. So I, the radiation I went in there every day for forget the number numbers is now but. I was in there with guys. There wasn't a soul in there that was twenty years. Close to my age they were all at least twenty years than me, but it's fine. It's over it's done and things are mostly back to normal and then Kobe hidden I've been sitting here doing not that much. You had quite a scare with Sherry and her own issue. There are a number of years ago and thirteen you. So we had talked about on the show and you know things that you were feeling at that point in fact you. Now around six years later, and it's you now having to go through this. So mean what kind of Of a dichotomy, is that to be a support system and a champion for your wife and now all of a sudden, you're the one facing something pretty substantial How do you overcome that and what were what were the best days like in what we're the darkest days like? I I want to skull due for a moment I'm in Kansas. So you use big words like dichotomy confuses me. So you need to dumb down just a little bit. You know I gotTa tell you the whole prostate cancer thing was like. A cold I mean it just wasn't. There just wasn't that much to it. I went in every day five days a week radiation treatment straight through and. It lasted like six minutes at a time I don't remember the number now but. All I had with fatigue at the end. There's some there's obviously some other side effects that come and go and but compared to what show you went through in twelve and thirteen. This was this was a blip on the radar. In fact that whole thing with her being a now noun organ transplant patient is what makes us probably more cautious about the whole pandemic thing she's working from home. The last thing I wanted to do is go out on the road and Cook a contest and then bring it home to her that would be really bad. So we just decided the best thing I could do is just maybe take the year off. So that's what I'm doing. Do you foresee then I mean we're all assuming let's say that the the year turns and there's more normal than. What we're used to at this point, do you think you'll be back out competing fifteen twenty thirty times or like how do you see pellet envy getting back into the competition saying I'm not sure I will honestly I I I'm not sure. I. I haven't. You know. How. Many years we started in one wrist are competing no to so two, thousand, nineteen. You know seventeen years of it of competing sometimes thirty, thirty, five events a year plus the other stuff we do. Honestly, it was burning me out. You know we went so hard to know nine I turned around and tried to repeat in town and Mike Wiesner to Al, beat me that yearly up second for team of the year and and then we were still, I think we're still top ten in eleven and then he just started become ground honestly took on the sponsorship and so it was more about business and and now. I'm not sure Greg to be honest with you I. I love the People I, love doing it. I love all that but it's work and I'm just not sure that it's it's what I wanNA do going forward. So. What do you see? Yourself doing that I mean I think people still associate rod gray as that barbecue guy as you mentioned, you were so prolific at it for a decent chunk of time a team of the year runner up as you said that you're after..

"Tuesday yet, another notch to the accomplishment belt by earning his way into the barbecue central show guest all the fame. So let's go ahead and race hotline and welcome back friend of the show. Rod. Gray Hey rod. How are you pal? Greg how are you buddy? Good. I'm glad you took all of my pertinent information math stop as we are amid pandemic time. So and by the way we are definitely socially distant. I'm in Cleveland and Urine Kansas. Kansas City right. Got My mask on. So I don't spread any of my attitude to you those evening. So you have three matches what you're saying. Sean ones enough. All right. Well, see it's all about blow back. Greg it it brings it back at me doesn't put it out right? That's right. Appreciate then. So I'm not GonNa ask you where the Barbecue Central Shell Guests Hall of fame honor ranks mostly because I don't want to have my feelings hurt. But since you are in the guest hall of fame now, I would certainly like to give you as much time as you would like in order to make any statement, you might see fit. To be honest with, you can just roll over your entire monologue again and let me start off with a few places. We could whole show right there. Oh Yeah. So much said there that I would like to get involved in but but I didn't prepare any remarks unlike unlike. Your later dashed. Hall of Famer who said probably created something robust. I'm just I'm guessing, I, don't know for sure but I like to think people take time out to draw out dissertation type experience. I haven't seen any probably since we shop the show in two, thousand thirteen, she was robust in she's probably restore robust I've. Not Nearly as robust as I am but all right So aside, let me ask you this question aside from the other twenty, twenty barbecue central show guest hall of fame members that we put into the hall last week. Do you know any other names that were like in the inaugural class of twenty eighteen or the class of five of twenty, nine, thousand, nine by chance? Well I'll I'll be honest with you. I did go research it reopened it really like it looks like your shot your Wad in two thousand eighteen to be honest you think you put everybody in their dog in and then. And in fact, filled with Derek riches in nineteen. I don't know if I would put it like that see. Here's the thing. Much unlike the barbecue. Hall of fame I mean whatever that means anybody. But the one that's put on by American royal who missed a fabulous opportunity right up front after they bought it from that pathetic online institution that it had. You know just lingered in media perhaps below mediocrity for years and ears they missed a huge opportunity of ushering in a large number upfront. So you could then. You disagree. You know you know it. Did you do your research? Did you know that I was? On the very small group that brought that to the to the American amongst others. Yes. Of course I know everything. There only really two of us, but I will tell you the original idea was sterling balls and he put that idea in my ear and another Guy Dean Kroger's not a barbecuer and I brought it to the committee and then we approached. Mike, about it, they didn't pay anything for Greg. Written Mike Graciously passed it off to us. It was hardly worth anything though I mean there was no monetary value to it. I, mean it was a great idea but it was nothing. I did more with my barbecue central show guest hall of fame than they ever did with that and by the way, no disrespect to them but it just was it just ended up being kind of nothing. So the fact that the American royal ended up or that you guys you and sterling brought it to the American royal to take over stirling. then. You know I mean that's that is obviously helped raise awareness and bring a little bit more fun to it I don't know exactly I you know I thought as we. Go back through and listen to the years a before the last two. You would find me a perhaps railing against any number of things that the barbecue. Wasn't doing right but but it has changed and it's great and we announced stuff on my show and it's a wonderful relationship now but I thought that was. Up Front beat where you could have put a bunch of people in and done away with a lot of other questioning and other and just included a bunch of people that might not ever get in. Okay so Okay. So you WANNA put a bunch of people who normally wouldn't ever get in your but what I'm talking about is a forensic science I mean let's be honest. There are probably any number if you go back into the to the a very early days, slave days you know. No surprise to you rod but. There weren't a lot of great records kept by some pitmasters that probably deserve to be in the Barbecue Hall of fame, right? So if we can find I. See that I'm not just saying, let's just go back and throw everybody in but I think that you could have done a bigger base upfront and then had an easier time as we go forward in the in the three or the five or whatever it would be. What was just say we didn't have the budget for bid class I mean not everybody can have slab of my ribs and broad as well. You know a lot of money was probably spent upfront on having Guy Fieri come in and be the face plate I mean, let's be honest. We get him Barbecue Hall of fame. Absolutely, not absolutely you. I am not kidding I'm not kidding you see..

D Romeo Delta argue recipe. Lots of feedback coming in on the twenty twenty barbecue central show guest hall of fame that was announced last week. Many of you love the segments being able to hear how the choices were made. This was the first year that we had to make the case for four inductees. Last year, we only had to make a case for one which happened be the bristle barbecue journalists Derek riches. And honestly while I would love to say that it would have been great to have all five to picked out in one shoot. There were some good old fashioned case making that happened last week and I liked it a lot. But seemed like, I. Don't want say it was the big sale. But we got to hear. The inner workings and mine thoughts of the embedded correspondents and people that they thought. Had the best chance of getting into the guest hall of fame this year, and then making the case for the three of us that weren't making the case deciding whether we'd not we wanted to come off one of our choices. To then a firm, one of the case makers choices that convoluted sounds like it as them talking about it out. Loud. But it was fun gray two segments I went back to a couple of different times vary entertained if I'm entertained listening back if I lived it. Should say something. So if you missed it, go back and listen those two segments second our last week it's already in the feed if you're not subscribed, do that any number of emails to follow up on things that were said during those segments, for instance. Why do you hate Jack Nicholas and Kanter Sore? Mo.. A lot of you followed up that email with I know Jack Nicklaus's who's can't disarm Oh and why do you have an issue with him? I don't know if I have enough time to get into the fact. On why Jack Nicholas the golden bear is also a raging asshole of seismic and Gargantuan proportions. Likewise one of the littoral smallest man on the face of the earth. And unless you're a horse racing person which I'm guessing most of you aren't you have no idea who can't disarm his an aside from being a raging alcoholic he also happens to be a raging asshole is when When I rank assholes in this Earth Jack Nicholas is number one with a bullet and it is not even close. Second. And it's a far far back second but second on the less is that jockey. WHO's probably listening to the show right now? Well into his third handle of paramount vodka. I'm not going to get into it. Just, know that those to take the cake for me. Also got this email a lot greg did you say Johnny trigg costed you at the very first Kingsford invitational you can go back and listen to the audio and make your own deductions. The people that had a lot of different viewpoints ask them I put out their names. Here's another question that came up. I didn't anticipate this being thing either. But through various channels, I got something along the lines of Greg. When you're making the case for George Motz, you told Doug after he agreed to saying, yes that you use a technique on him in order to hopefully get that. Yes. Answer what was that tack neak or what was that technique? Glad. Some of you picked up on that that's a bit of a sales tactic, and if you noticed while everybody else was going around and I was saying, is it yes or no? For you John or yes or no? For you rusty when it was my turn after laying out the case I want to dog and I said Doug is there any reason? Why we wouldn't be voting George Motz in. Allowing Doug.

"And here's what's happening kitchen get the newsletter coming up in about twelve minutes from now a guest who has made any number of appearances here on the show you knew him as an incredibly successful competition pit master a purveyor of rubs and sauce a one of the most mentioned and talked about cooking class instructors back when cooking classes were really starting to take a hold over this competition scene and the list goes on and on I think at last count as we were talking about last week and Barbecue Central Show Guest Hall of Famers. In the neighborhood of twelve times that's a dozen may be working on a Baker's dozen here. This evening fee pitmasters of pellet envy as many of you know him rod gray making his triumphant return to the show. If. You are a listener especially last week you'll know that rod gray was one of the five that was inducted into the twenty twenty barbecue central shows guest all some people were. Doing their own posts unsolicited by me unconfirmed by me. Leaving key words out like gassed. And I think other people that were commenting on other people's posts were thinking that my five got into a barbecue hall of fame. I don't want to say that that is incorrect. However, that is incorrect. Get into the guest hall of fame of this show. I. Just want to be very clear about that. Not that that's demeaning or any less. Wonderful, life changing you put the adjectives and descriptors as you see, fit? But just to make sure that we're on the same page. After Rod Gray, we will be joined by first time or the show somebody that is a co host of a barbecue podcast as well. His name is Lendl Strand and he is a co host of the tailgate guys barbecue show and as I listened to that show and I listened to Lindell talk about. How disenchanted he has become with the judges judging his meets at competition. And I wanted to have him on to talk about the never ending topic of debate and or things that cause competition cooks consternation at the forefront continues to be judged. And we will hash it out with lendl and say, Hey, man is this really judging issue or is your food socking and you're looking for a way to get out of it to make yourself look a little better. Let's own to what we should be owning up to that your first our move to the second hour. As I mentioned last week after I gave you my take on the American barbecue showdown on net flicks. Also quick to tell you that my new man crush in the whole world is Rashid Phillips and he will be in. Until Barbecue competent. Talk to Rasheed bought his background. If you've watched the show, you know there's some Jamaican heritage going on there but we'll also see how he got on the show and all the behind the seats of all, ask the questions that I want to ask of course. And we'll see how that whole barbecue scene is going for him. And then closing out the show. So we're book ending the show with the twenty twenty barbecue guest, Hall of Famers Rod Gray on the first book end, and then joining me to close the show coming out of the bullpen as we say is a show favourite Lemay Oxley.

"Then approached. Then Pat lafrieda. Oh boy. Let me write that down because now we have gone into the Too Faced. So right now if you're keeping track Rod gray has two votes. Lynnae Oxley Loop has to votes Pat lafrieda has two lumps the two votes. I agree with Doug Pat lafrieda has been a fantastic guests. He's brought a tremendous amount of engine light into a portion of the barbecue industry and Grilling industry and restaurant industry that I had no idea existed. I had you know, I just didn't even know where the hell it was coming from every once in a while. I'd see a Cisco trailer out front of somewhere and I just figured it all rolled down the dolly from there, but there had had to be coming from another place on top of that before delivery and here is a business like Pat lafrieda who's getting orders at 2:00 in the morning for cuts to be then shipped out for something. It's going to be served later that day. I mean It was absolutely mind-blowing the fact that were dug. What was the percentage was it 85% of his inventory being sold was dry aged beef to some degree. Yeah. It was dry-aged was a crazy in the building a new Warehouse. It was saying amount of percentage of dry aged beef which just goes to show how popular that portion is. So Pat lafrieda wins for me. Oh by the way, folks in case you're keeping score. We have our first twenty20 barbecue Central show guest Hall of Famer. That is Rod gray. I picked him as well. So we Mark him off. Look. I don't know what one can say about Rod gray in his Heyday. There were a few guests that were as happy to appear whenever I asked I don't know how many times he's been on the show, but it has been a number of times. It has been one-off segments 12. * thank you. It's been one off segments. He's been part of some of the best Round Table shows that I have done in the past. He is never held anything back. We one of the most popular solo segments that he ever did was when we talked about sponsorship of barbecue teams. When your team how do you go about soliciting sponsorships things that you need to do in order to be attractive to somebody that's going to be spending their money on you. He's been an absolute pleasure place. Not that she's in the Hall of Fame. His wife is very knowledgeable as well. So a great team there Rod has been a great guest over these you haven't seen him recently because I mean, he just hasn't been doing a lot of competition. No or anything that's really generated a reason for him to come on. But if he ever asked to come on, I'm sure I would make room for him. So Rod gray is the first inductee to the twenty-twenty barbecue Central Chicago guest Hall of Famer. So congratulations to Rod gray.

You're hearing what's happening right. Darren worth just asked why would i. That's all he cooks on at the moment he would never. He wouldn't be caught dead cooking anything other than a wagon. Steve Farren has no idea back in two thousand ten where he could even find behind a wagon. Brisk don't even know where I could find great I can't spell. Who Afford Lord it? I'm not sure I haven't ever seen a white. Who are we restaurant in the person you need? Can you imagine Guys this isn't twenty years ago. This isn't the beginnings of Barbecue. This was nine years years ago. So just so you can firmly grasp. How much competition barbecue has evolved? You know two years prior to that I had had a brisket roundtable with Jim. Minion an ED. Morin fast at it. Is You know Leeann whip who just one that food network show earlier in the year ear and Ray lampy and I said is anybody injecting briskets and all of them to a man and woman said now Why would we do that? Certainly there wasn't the amount of injections or anything like that as there are today but just to give give you an idea of what has changed over the course of nine years now directly after that whole Rod. Steve and Darren thing rod did say that being a competitor that there are things that he understands his evolution happens he would. He wasn't one hundred percent turned off to the fact and it was the great roundtable. You should go back and listen to it and a few of you have been asking if I will be bringing competition roundtables back at this point now just because you you know. There just isn't a huge competition interest at the moment as things change. Maybe that'll change but again to give you the snapshot of where things have have gone in. Nine years. Darren Ward Steve Farren and Rod Gray at that time and Darren by the way it happens to be still the best and a lot of people's minds they had no idea where they could get wag oooo they had never even considered getting a Rod. Gray can't even spell wag and now you line those three up at a competition in two thousand nineteen as we're rapidly coming to a close in or early in twenty twenty. Would you rather have the choice or selector see A. B. or prime or wagging they're probably going wagging everybody can find it now. Everybody knows how to spell it now but in two thousand nine not the case the cool bit of Info by the way that was also one of those Wednesday shows that evidently I used to do. I've completely blocked that from memory. Ritchie Robin coming. Up Out of the break. Let me talk quickly. About South side market and barbecue established in eighteen. Eighty two south side is the oldest barbecue joint in Texas. They've been owned and operated by the same family for three generations famous as for the original beef sausage which is course ground in a natural pork casing they also have authentic.

"Massive new headquarters goes to northern Virginia and New York and spares Indiana from the headaches that insiders say will come with it. But the Hoosier state will be home to the US education center for influences. And that's just a part of the plan two hundred forty five million dollar campus springing up on a site near Indianapolis international airport with a promise of as many as three thousand new jobs like twenty twenty three four about Infosys later, but first back to early two thousand eighteen and this report from Kurt darling. Amazon has narrowed its list of contenders to twenty cities all across North America. And Indianapolis is one of them. The capital city is among cities like Chicago, Boston Atlanta. In Austin, Texas, that are being considered for the HD you Amazon will make its final decision later this year. And indie mayor Joe Hawke said says, regardless of what that decision is his city is a big winner. Anyway, the city that lands the HQ will get a five billion dollar investment from Amazon along with fifty thousand new jobs leading the cheers for central Indiana as well as the bid submitted by the Hammond, and Gary areas, governor Holcomb flinging come here come here come here. And we think they're going to like what they see as they continue to dig deeper hoping to improve Indies chances in Indiana house committee, moved legislation to lift the ban on the light rail component in central Indiana's mass transit system. It could not have happened to media. Lately. But state Senator rod gray. Martinsville offered. Hope they're going to have to wait that long with everything else. Indiana has to offer. And I think we have a lot of wonderful things to offer here in Indiana that could be attractive and pull them into the state the era began with Indianapolis on the shortlist of two hundred thirty eight classical locations, Gary and Hammond fell aside, but by summer ending was still there on the list of twenty finalists, and then appears at Amazon has made its choice, and Indianapolis is not New York City in northern Virginia's what several reports from several media sources close to Amazon are saying that means possible fifty thousand jobs and five billion dollar investment. Does not come to the Hoosier state. How do you spend the loss of more than five billion dollars fifty thousand upscale jobs and the development echo that it would have spurred really not so hard as it turns out, our home prices would have gone to the transportation issue is going to become crushing? We already have a thousand opens tougher shops in the city that will get a lot. Worse. John McDonald is CEO of clear object ain't a tech company based in Fisher's. We want to grow our tech economy. We don't want to have it taken over. I know that's a bit of a contrarian point of view. But I kind of think we dodged a bullet on this one. And I think it's probably best for our tech economy that we keep building it right here at home in Indiana. He and others are more enthusiastic about the Infosys project. Infosys is a multinational corporation based in India dealing in consulting IT. And outsourcing today, we proudly announce the global giant emphasis will call the city of Indianapolis behead pushed hard for Amazon's new headquarters, but influences gave mayor Joe Hawke shed, a more palatable success story, the state and the city are providing more than one hundred million dollars in incentives.
