"I mean the two horses that beat him that day. Hot rod charlie and mandolin. If they running this travers. I'd be very interested in picking them potentially against essential quality especially hot rod charlie and not the bid night. Bourbon has run as well as hot rod. Charlie has because he hasn't but just looking at how the race is going to play out from a tactical standpoint. There is not much speed in this race and drawing the rail. You have to think that ricardo santana and steve associate to hatch a play on the go to the front end. Try to slow things down a little bit. Set a moderate pace and take them as far as you can throughout this meet at saratoga. We've seen especially in the dirt. Routes that speed is really dangerous. And i think this is a real threat to take them gate to wire and i do believe he's going to be a square price because so much money is going to be guarded by Quality so that's the reason i picked midnight bourbon. He's the second most likely winter. But i'm gonna make my top pick. Yeah i condemn protector. We don't favors early recess ten furlongs service but if we did he would get that flag here for sure i would think looking Just glancing at the running styles and the pace figures at the horses were on. I'm pretty sure he would. We don't do that for a resented often spiel races at a mile and a quarter but he is a horror. Show the quality to be able to do it and just a couple other horses. I wanted to touch upon. You mentioned dynamic one. I i agree with you. I've seen some buzz around this horse. He was a visually impressive winner of that kirwin. I think he was clearly best in that race. But he's another one who is a deep closer and i worry about him getting the right trip. I think he'll like the mile and a quarter distance. But i just. I just wonder if he's really good enough if he's going to have things work out for him in this travers and words that i would throw into the mix at a big price is the number seven king fury another one of these can be p courses that got prep in a race. That probably wasn't ideal but he did runs some nice speed figures two and three back and he has a little bit more tactical speed than i think. His reason races might suggest so. He's a little interesting at a price. But i did for me. It was between the two inside horses. midnight bourbon a central quality..

"No guests lined up to join me today on this tuesday afternoon but i was texting with my co host. Craig a little bit earlier this afternoon and happy to hear that he's doing well and should likely be returning to this podcast. Within the next couple of weeks as long as everything continues to to go smoothly with him and his family continuing to wish them the best and looking forward to getting craig back on here to be my co-host but it's just me today and i'll be looking back at some reading from the past weekend and there's quite a bit to go through. I'm going to focus on three venues monmouth park saratoga and del mar and i think it makes sense to begin with that new jersey venue as we. Look back at saturday's haskell card at monmouth that was the race that really had everybody talking on saturday. The haskell created quite a bit of controversy with what happened through this stretch of that race and it's kind of unfortunate. What did transpire. Because it was shaping up to be a really classic edition of the haskell that dual down to the wire between mandolin and hot rod. Charlie obviously hot rod. Charlie just getting his nose down on the wire i but they really threw it down the stretch and it was just unfortunate what happened but that freak accident as midnight. Bourbon lost the rider pocket. Lopez happy to if you didn't see it already was pretty widely shared on social media that everything was fine with both posco and the horse. People saw midnight bourbon galloped across the wire everything obviously find with him but You know there was a lot of analysis and hot takes on what happened with that. Situation is hot rod. Charlie crossed over in front of midnight. Bourbon and obviously that forced his disqualification. You know there's a lot of chatter about whether or not the writer is not being able to carry or actually use. I should say because they are able to able to carry the whips at mama had anything to do with the incident. And personally i think all of this analysis and speculation about whether some issue with the equipment caused hot rod. Charlie to drift in is kind of missing the most obvious takeaway from what happened in this incident. And that's just that flopping pratt was trying to win the race and he was clearly if you watch the head on trying to steer hot rod charlie over to engage with mandolin if you especially watch his body language in deep stretch after the incident. He's tugging on the left rain. Actually trying to get hot rod her charlie to move over even further left because he wanted to intimidate mandolin. A little bit he wanted to race ride that fo and most importantly wanted hot rod charlie to engage in seaman balloon so we continue to fight on and hold that horse off. These writers have to get a little more creative trying to do everything can to motivate these horses. They don't have the use of a riding crop or they're not able to use it to motivate the resources stretch of these racist. So i thought that both mandolin and hot rod. Charlie got great trips but the thing with floppy and practice. You know..

"Sixteen years ago he would go on to saddle four more winners sense that went by stevie wonderboy four more breeders cup winners and today looks to at a haskell stakes to his resume with the ultra talented hot rod. Charlie gonna welcome doug as we go down the road to the breeders cup. Time to go down the road to the breeders cup and officially welcomed trainer. Doug o'neill doug happy haskell day. Oh thank you. I was so excited about today and Very optimistic or we're going to a good run from charley. Yeah looking forward to seeing him straight stuff. Let's just start for a minute. We'll talk about hot rod charlie. But let's start with that. Look back that call that we just heard from stevie wonderboy and tom durkin have fun with that. Call go back to two thousand five. What was that moment like for doug. O'neill it was incredible especially for the late Merv griffin who was such a successful Entertainer and businessmen and then to be you know partners with him on on a on a great horse like that was incredible and Yeah stevie wonder boy was just exceptionally talented. And and unfortunately his career was cut short injury. But that was Quite a great to look back and and I can remember like it was yesterday. Was those great times. Yeah you came back. The following year with thors echo and then mary field than in two thousand seven horses you think about where your career is today and you think back on on where you were back then You had some really good horses back then my friend. Now we're blessed you know. I think the thing. I'm most proud of most grateful for is that Most of the team is still intact Leandro and more salvage rivera and johnny garcia. I mean we've got somebody been so blessed to have somebody Brave horsemen around me and and Ban we continue to To move forward as we speak so just very grateful for that. You're always doug very quick to credit your team and it does take a village to get to this point. There's no doubt about it but look you're the man steering the ship you're making the ultimate 'cause you're the one who brought everybody together and there has to be a sense of pride on your part when you step back and you look at all. The things that you in. The team have been able to accomplish. It has to be. I can imagine even somewhat overwhelming at times it's It's really something. That i i. You know i dreamt about doing when when i first started off with the Jude feld but the the shank in my hand start walking for him and nineteen eighty six and something that i You know just jumped of of being able to manage You know a stable and never never really dreamt or thought it was possible to have a sable. This is that we were able to put together and that that's just It's a wonderful blessing and You get days like today with the haskell and of course like charlie it just You pinch yourself that. You're in these situations. And you're you're fortunate enough to be connected to a a great horse like charlie speaking of hot rod charlie Riddle me this batman. Because then you know. Of course i am also a hall of fame nominated trainer right so i can ask you this question. His first three starts not good for third fifth. There were circumstances involved. There were turf and sprints and all that kind of stuff they all three came without blinkers on. You added blinkers last october sandinista. Anita he breaks his maiden he goes on to finish second in the breeders cup juvenile third in the robert. b lewis. Win the louisiana derby third in the kentucky derby second. The belmont all would lakers. The blinkers come off today. How come yeah you know. It's it's kind of a chance to move because like you say he's really in top. Form is is numbers. Are all heading the right way. And you know what we thinking about here with kicking the blinkers off but I think when you go back to his first erases. We didn't have mine because you never really seems to need them early. On and then Here he was and he was like favorite and all three of those races without him and He was getting beep but not tired. And we're like what is going on. And he just he kinda struggled Separating himself from from you know from the pack if you will so We added the blinkers definitely helped and Now you know he's just a much more mature horse mentally and physically of course and and Now we're seeing him with the blinkers off separating himself from from his workmate and from from Packs of horses so he's just really seems to be enjoying it and we're hoping the more natural blinker lists Charlie you know we're gonna see his natural competitive spirits you know reach Their heights Without the blinkers. But you know i. It's gonna be interesting. He's been working great without him so now we got to see today if it works. It's interesting you bring up. The fact that he was favored in each of those first three starts all three of them being losses and then since then he's gone on to win agreed to and be classic place and doug in all the starts since adding the blinkers. He hasn't been favored one time. That's incredible to It really is and Now here we are quarterback baber today so.

"Today's program six stakes races. Five of those are greatest stakes including two grade ones with the united nations which is race eleven and the race which will follow that. The haskell is race number. Twelve the entire program. Larry just one hit after another. Yeah it really is an exciting card. And and i think it's a really good idea to to bunch all these races together because you get the top jockeys here and and all that you've not not only got those two great ones you've got the the matchmaker. The molly pitcher. The monmouth cup. I mean it's it's full of graded stakes action and And really competitive races to Don't see a lot of Heavy favorites among these stakes races. Which which makes it even more exciting. And i think we'll have an outstanding card and hopefully the weather will who operate the. There's little chance of thunderstorms. Were hoping that they stay away. Let's talk about the hassle for a minute at attracted a field of seven and this is a race much like the jim dandy at saratoga that typically courses will use to begin the second half of their seasons and and the horses that we became familiar with through the road to the triple crown and the triple crown races. You have the same thing here. In the haskell as typical with with every haskell invitational you get some horses that we saw in the the derby the preakness belmont hot rod. Charlie comes in mandolin. Who was runner-up the kentucky derby and won the pegasus at monmouth and his most recent Midnight bourbon for steve asmussen. Share your thoughts on this year's field you do. Have you know those three who everybody's familiar with. I mean you you saw them all. Come down the stretch in the kentucky. Derby man balloon and hot rod. Charlie were right next to each other right alongside of medina's spirit and and midnight. Urban obviously is a very very talented horse And now you're going to add the the new shooter factor to all this is they. They like to call them following. See who is a a three three lifetime. Moore's for trainer. Todd pletcher Who started his career with bob baffert out in california and made his way to the east coast and a lot of people are talking about him. he's the the most likely front runner in the race but You know we'll see i. It's going to be a really really exciting hostile. You had the added advantage of calling all three triple crown. Races with nbc. So you got to see many of these horses up close and personal and study them and and really go inside those three triple crown races. Hot rod charlie man. I know he's the sixty five morning line favorite In the in the haskell bit man he is one gutsy. Little horse isn't he. He's tough His recent the belmont stakes was was amazing. I mean the the fractions that were being set for a mile and a half and he just kept on rolling and and only essential quality was able to come and get them and they just just blew everybody else's doors off. I mean it was a spectacular race and of course is his kentucky derby and You know all the races leading up he. He really has kept improving and improving at as a two year old. I i don't even remember calling him. He was running a delmar on the turf. You know it was like these. Two year old grass raises and like hot rod charlie reynolds racist and all of a sudden. Now you you know. He's become a new horse on dirt and You know i i really. I'm really impressed with What i've seen from him but this racism had easy. It's going to be It's a tough horse to take six to five on. Yeah and and brag hawk sends out manda loon. Who was runner-up in the kentucky. Derby just a half length behind medina spirit came back and won the pegasus june thirteenth at monmouth the local prep race for the haskell. He's a horse. Because of the fact. I think that brad cox does have belmont winner. Essential quality in his barn. I think mandolin kinda gets overlooked. A little bit sometimes doesn't necessarily get the respect that he deserves. but larry he's four for seven lifetime. He's a grade to winter. What's wrong with mandolin. Nothing His his performance in the kentucky derby was the fantastic. The only the only shock in the derby was his odds. He was like twenty nine to one in there. Despite the fact that everyone on the backstretch was talking about how great he was training up to the races. All i kept hearing derby week mandolin mandolin and he he almost gets the job done. He maybe eventually will the kentucky derby but but he was a You know he. He ran such a great race. Now i was at monmouth park for the pegasus working for tv g. I had a chance to see that race. it was a learning experience for both him and for full around jerus- because here at monmouth park you're not allowed to use the crop at all and a lot of these jockeys are used to to using the crop or the whip. Whatever you wanna call it To get your horses to run faster and inspire them to go and you're not allowed to do that here. At monmouth park with new rules from the new jersey racy commission so florida through got a test run in the pegasus and mantle did start to drift out through the stretch and and he sort of waited on horses and got a little tired there at the at the end. So you know you you think that. That was a good learning experience for him. The one thing i will say is one of my favorite angles in these. Big races is horses that are pointed to that race well in advance and from the time that mandolin ran on the kentucky derby they knew that haskell was next for him and they were just going to get to the hassle with one race for pegasus leading up and i love horses. That bet are planned for a specific race. Well in advance and mandolin is the absolute top case of that. And fact since the pegasus he didn't leave he's been here at monmouth park and that Certainly the big edge were hot rod. Charlie had to fly all the way across the country. Of course i've been told hot generally likes to fly and it doesn't bother him at all. So there's there's all that to consider to couple of fantastic points visiting with larry coma so we'd be part of the tv. Gee broadcast team later today..

"I you know. I guess Isn't the right word with him. But i kinda feel like. He's the upset or here. I don't think mandolin can be hot. Rod charlie i really don't i know midnight bourbon can't i can't think following c-can this worse as johnson freakish ability his to me. He's he's wanted to and it's very wide spectrum. He's like winning the same with like going away. Like super impressive. Or he's off the board. I just think he might be super freaky. Or he might. The the distance is going to hit him really hard he could. You could be like. I saw on your twitter competitive edge in any type or he could search out in the very good i. I personally don't like them at all. I thought this was a very weird offer. Them the sound of okay. So do your point. And i agree. I thought this was really strange when a guy like pletcher does it. It's kind of to me and everybody has different banana. Nobody's really wrong right. This is my skin is like you know if like Some dickhead since the hassle. It's like well. That's a terrible news. That's not gonna work when it's hot watcher. I i'm just curious with this. I'm just curious. How much is it. Is todd spendthrift a little bit. Here is six now. That's like that's kind of my thing with him. Because i believe i remember correctly. Competitive edge had like a d like a decent ownership. Not as not as well known to spend but like the us's his ownership was pretty big too and they did the same thing they were like. Oh instead of instead of running in the sprint race. Let's go for the haskell. And then i mean that ruined him. I mean they ran back in the in the allen. Jerkins andy ramle fourth or something like that. I i just wonder how much of this is actually pletcher wanting the sand dam or span for being like we want like we wanted to try the hassle with them. Yeah and very funny competitive. Bad super saver horse unhappy. I say it seems very odd given give pletcher that you you would if you're gonna try and granted this is a stretch but if you're going to try like in a big race like because he's going from going from medan specially took him to to break. It goes through an allowance race and then goes here. It's like maybe try something smaller. And then go to the travers or something. You know what i mean right. Just don't know. I just don't know who would've lake. I mean he's been doing great around one turn. I don't know who was who would have lined especially after his last week. Who would have lined up against him in the answer down. Yeah i mean what maybe drain the clock in. that's it. I feel like he a like before the me. I thought he was like the lock. The win the amsterdam than the allen jerkins. I don't see any other sprinter that that's as good as him so even if he doesn't win i just hope it doesn't ruin. It comes back to your point. Would you commit to the haskell you start take the amsterdam out the table and if you if you're shitty in the haskell and you really struggle coming back in the jerkins is not going to be quite as easy if you're over here prep in l. Two blocks over to our right right. Especially when you're talking about a that definitely did not come up wi in terms of you've got a horse like hot rod. Charlie who is gonna make you make make you earn what he no matter. What happens you know obviously midnight bourbon and mandolin. Classy orces in a sense that volley. Ccf it's not like week class or we week and he's he kinda step up near and he only got more. And i feel like. I really more inclined to lake. Maybe try him as like a long shot if he was like the one morning line i mean he got respect in the morning line at three two one. I can't imagine he's really gonna drift out from that. These seems to be the wiseguy horse. Because you know everybody's either like oh either mandolin or hot rod. Charlie and then that people are like well following seeking pull off the upset at three two one on a horse that's never gone to turns and he's going like you said it's a salty grew at least the top part of the group that he like. I just for that three to one. I now not a williams talk. I want ask.

"And then I think that the, uh you know, I don't think the draw is really going to hurt you focus. I think Rosario is going to take him way back, and hopefully he'll be able to at some point. Save a little bit of ground. Domestic spending certainly gets the better of the job. But yeah, maybe a small amount. I mean, says is a is a very, very good writer. I'd certainly rather have. I ran Ortiz. I don't think I rat Ortiz is the best grass writer. I think he's very, very good grass writer. I mean, right now, I think, perhaps probably moved ahead in my book. You know, when we watched the the East Coast West Coast riders, it seems like Pratt is is a little bit ahead of Ortiz it just about on the dirt. There's no question That I read. Ortiz is clearly the best, but maybe a small amount J But again, Uh, I think, Dufaux second time, Rosario, I think the jockey situation is perfect for him here today. Rosario should be able to you know, he did win with this horse, uh, back at Gulfstream before. Earlier in his career, so I think that will suit him fine, and I think he comes and gets them today. Yeah, absolutely. It was an opportunity for fluffy and Pratt. Certainly he's the best known writer in Southern California, and he's are dominating Rider on both surfaces out here, But he's really not as well known on the nationwide picture and with a rat out Flavin's really going to enhance to shine on that cart. He is J and boy, I think he moved way up with that. Win it the the pregnancy just a few weeks ago, another another stellar ride from him. And and then you know, we saw him on Kentucky Derby day in the big picture where obviously he was, uh he was in the, uh, in the winter circle, their with domestic spending. He was on hot Rod, Charlie and the Derby. He was on the board, so he's really getting a lot of attention and really writing. Well, I believe he won a couple other races on the Kentucky Derby cards as well. So this guy is just going great guns right now. There's no question he's hot, and he's been winning out here as well. So I think everybody is getting used to him. And and But he's just certainly his confidence. And they ain't you can't replace confidence, you know, and almost anything that that, uh any any sort of competition confidence is huge. And I think Brad has it right now. And he's certainly riding great. And I look for another great ride here on domestic spending. Absolutely so up of the you mentioned hot Rod Charlie so of the two choices that he had between that one in Rombauer. You think cloudy and made the right choice. Well, I don't think he I think he had committed already to one horse, J. And from what I read that it wasn't really a choice that he had already committed to hot Rod Charlie before making the choice. I mean, you know, you'd have to ask him which one he thought was better, but they had already committed After the Derby. He told Doug O Neill that he would ride hot Rod Charlie, so I wouldn't base the choice on those two. I loved hot Rod Charlie going into the Derby. He ran a good race in there. I didn't think he ran a great race. I thought you were in a good race. I've got another selection in there in mind for this distance. And for this day today, um and maybe hot Rod, Charlie will you know he could win the race? I thought today's distance might be a little bit out of out of his scope. But we'll have to see. But I don't wouldn't wouldn't make the change based on where Pratt did because I think he was committed. The riding hot rod Charlie after the Derby. Yeah, I agree. And one last thing with that big carry over. Pick six tomorrow..

"Chance to sit down with NBC's the Feet, pinkeye the third and talked to him about some jockey strategy. And who better to talk to you. Then Laffite. Scylla feed Some of the most exciting races in the Triple Crown. Serious have occurred in the Preakness is recently as last year with Swiss skydiver and authentic So stretch battle. Really, I guess it started on the far turn. Think back to easy Gore and Sunday silence. Any reason why it seems to happen. Maybe a little more often in the Preakness. Part of that have to do with the familiarity you know you mentioned Sunday Silence. Easy, Gore. You think back to affirmed and Aladar And we've had some of these recent battle of the battle of the sexes with their you know, Rachel Alexandra, holding up. Find that Burger last year authentic and Chris Skydiver. We don't have a lot of rivalries. And when you get a taste of that And where a horseman finished second in the Kentucky Derby that they get another shot at the horse to beat him on that particular afternoon. Sunday, Silence seems to go in the Preakness, one of the greatest moments and embracing history period. I don't care how many times you've seen it. Every time you see it, it sends it sends chills up your spine. Unfortunately, There is a trend now that seemingly the horses that run really well in the Kentucky Derby, but don't win. We don't see him in the frequent, You know, Regardless of what happened in terms of Medina Spirits status as the Derby winner for the time being banned alone is not going to run in the Preakness. We're not gonna see hot rod Charlie or essential quality. That's just been the trend. Word owners and trainers are are hesitant Tonto to run back in two weeks and maybe reevaluating look at the Belmont Stakes five weeks later, or take a The approach of there's so much more this season, looking ahead to the Travers or a Breederscup classic, so you don't get a chance to see it as often as you'd like anymore, But I think that has a lot to do with it. Rivalries. And what the Triple Crown Really is all about and seeing those same horses in the Derby, seeing him do it again in the Preakness. Two weeks later, your dad was one of the all time great riders are Hall of Famer. So let's talk a little bit about this race from the jockey strategy. Aspect. Now that Medina spirit won the Derby in the fashion that he did on the front in general, are jockeys inclined to think if a horse wins the race a certain way I eat wire to wire in this case. That they can't let him do that again. If they could help it. Front runners are always gonna be deemed vulnerable because of it in that you can. If you feel that you can send a rabbit out. Not that we see that is often anymore in Triple Crown races because of the way the point system is Shut up. Where you again? You don't have that horse who simply entered to take the starch out of another front runner, But You know if a front runner is hounded and pressured enough, and they're one dimensional and have to establish a lead in order to be effective, Yet there's all those that vulnerability and its other jockeys responsibility in the race. You're suppose that Vulnerabilities. So I will say this while Medina Spirit snuck in the back door and one in 12, the one going wire to wire and a lot of that having to do with what's in place with rocky worlds at the start of the Derby. Not breaking very sharp and you are osario, losing his iron and getting pinched. Otherwise. Who knows? Maybe the Kentucky Derby would have been a repeat of the San Anita Derby, where Rocky World beat Medina. Spirits of the first turn didn't take advantage of the golden Inside, railing the wire to wire Dina Spirit had everything his way in the Kentucky Derby, and I'm not gonna put it in the same context. It's a winning colors and 40 Niner when what he Stephen says Gary Stevens. Wayne Lukas, You're not getting away with that again. You're gonna feel some serious heat and Pat Dave Construction on 49. It was specifically So after winning colors, they That toward fractions, and both of them faded. I don't know that you see that scenario, and also you're dealing with stablemates. Different owners, but stable making concerts were Medina spirit? I do think he faces Medina spirit is gonna have to face more pressure because it's not a matter of this horse that Okay, he'll probably come back to us. We don't have to worry about him that much. "As a trainer and one of the greatest soundbites in sports by the way can't wait to chat with him but it's just it's just i. I'll never get used to the fact that i get to. I get to be a part of the master's i'll never get used to the fact that i get to be a part of the kentucky derby and cover these events for espn. That is just well. I remember when you little never would have believed that me one of the first times you went there you want sharia could stand in a totally exactly where you were shocked by. How close in your. You're on the dirt. No doubt i was blown away to get to watch the race from the track. Like on it. And i'll never forget posted a video a few years ago when justify one that was a wild ride man when justify won the triple crown. That year thing was eighteen. When you could just tale an member baffert. Say into me. He said to me on thursday before the kentucky derby this horses like lebron. James you just have to. You just look at the horse and you see it. Superiority athletically over the field and boy did he put on a show. I mean speaking of boat racing people to to witness history. I got to witness history. Thirteen horses ever have won the triple crown thirteen and got to see the thirteenth. And and look i us. I hope it doesn't sound. I'm not trying to go out in any way. It's quite the contrary. It's just humbling. That i got to see that and grateful for man all right. We'll get out of here on that Travis has given me the role roll at rapid sign on the machine. "Downs hosts every year at the kentucky oaks day on friday churchill. Downs the day before the kentucky derby every year for the last several course. We didn't do it last september. We didn't go but the previous three or four years that i've been a part of covering the derby are typically wear a pink shirt pink accents pink shoes so this year. Payton jenkins my boy. Who's the founder of lane came down to the house and we're kind of talking through up and the derby was one of them and so he brought me this jacket. And it's like it's it's it's a it's almost a purple. It's a fuchsia leaning towards purple. The jacket is a grayish gray and white kind of chat Plaid ish kinda vob checker kind of vibe with these fuchsia leaning towards purple stripes in it. It is bad to the bone. And i'm going to wear that. I'm gonna wear pink shoes. i'm going to probably i have a. I have a pink shirt. But i don't know if the pink shirt works with jack and i might get laney's i'm gonna have to get my fashion inside on this before. I'll put that in in the suitcase. But i'm packing a truck a big this week travis. So wednesday as we take this. It's eight forty five in the morning on tuesday. The twenty seventh eighth twenty-seventh seven seven seven twenty seventh of april. And so tomorrow. I am going down to clemson. I am spending the next couple of days with trevor lawrence ahead of his. Nfl draft dream. Where by all accounts. He'll be the number one pick in the nfl draft going to the jacksonville. Jaguars head coach urban meyer. And that's going to be amazing. But then as soon as i'm done with trevor. On thursday night from the draft experience. I will be back in the truck and drive back to charlotte seven. Am to louisville. First thing friday morning my draft outfit from again all lane is on fire. And so what. I'm planning on wearing friday travis k. Provided it matches. I'll get peyton peyton and lanes inside on this saturday. I'm bringing all the all the flames. Do i have a so peyton. Made me a red white and blue seersucker dude it is. It is ridiculous. andy andy. Lining of the jacket is horses racing. The park yeah. Don't think y'all won't see that on social media saturday because it's just the coolest man like i am so impressed i guess is the right way to say it's just they do such great work all to say that they do such great work. I've had a relationship with him for a long time. And the reason i have the relationship is a laney's college roommates works for that company. i would say they. You have usually vision for kind of what you're thinking in that vision it comes to light with. I've seen those jackets a post person and the stitching and the inside lining and all the different designs. They really do crush. It is meticulous. They it's it's meticulous the way that they like they know me so i mean not only do. I have a relationship with the company based on wearing their suits. But but it's so much more than that again. Emily turner who works for lane is one laney's college roommates original college roommates and a and a few years back. They wanted to do a line and they asked me just for some different. Inspirations in my life things that really mattered to me and it was things like the fact that my grandfather was the preacher man in patents third army. It was the fact that My lineage created jack. Daniel's tennessee whiskey all those things and they created the suits they built the suit designed the suits around. Whatever those inspirations were. And i just went when i got the line when it was sent to me i was blown away. I was like this is crazy. How beautiful and like just right on the target they were with what was in my mind and just really grateful for them and their belief in me and friendship with our friends of mine family to me. So so i can't wait. Theocracy that stuff i have. I have one more question for you. And that is the ju- up. What is your take on. I've never had it before the man they're dangerous. I'm a meant guy. I like the taste of mint and i'm whiskey guy in kentucky bourbon. Bourbon guy. Y'all know me i'm jack. Daniels guy Brown foreman owns jack daniels. They are the parent company jack. Daniel's they also have old forester. Which is the cannabis kinda offficial bourbon of the derby and so old forester. Does they amused delicious delicious bourbon and so they have stands at the derby. I did a little. I did a little thing for. I can't remember it was sportscenter social or whatever but i had one of the kiosk mint julep technicians. What are you where artists create. Teach me how to make one. And every friend i have i think was like that was awesome. Dude and so yeah. I'll be consumed several the mint. Juleps it strikes me as one of those ones where you have to have it when you go there and you wanna have maybe one more because they're delicious but if you keep going down that path it's going to be a long night and even worse morning. I'm definitely going to have a hot rod. Julep when i get there on friday to see the boys rabbit hole is a distillery and they are making a hot rod. Julep for the fellas man. Yeah no you can't officially root for hot rod. Charlie has you know your objective in reporting but I'm officially that's the horse. I'm gonna ride with because i haven't talked to any other owners trainers at the have derby son At the boys at boat race. That's right dude. And i'm grateful for the boys at boat race. I mean like again. Not this thing is so fantastic that they took the time On the morning when they are at work watching their horse his work with pat's uncle doug o'neill two-time derby winner.

"Greater cause and you having disciplined Towards that day in and day out and so you know that's why these guys are my best rather than the world's best friends in the world you know we all. We all made those decisions together. We all went through that together. That's what set us up. I think to Go on go on this wild adventure we call life. Thanks so much fellows. Appreciate you guys taking the time. Thank you so much. Marty for having us really really appreciate it. And we can't wait to see tonight as well and charlie on i. I'm so grateful that those guys at the time like isn't that fun that travis. That's awesome that they are leaving. Churchill downs from practice. When they call to chat with us on marty smith's america that's awesome and the fact that they've had some of them have never been to before it now. Their first time going is to watch their horse. I just can't imagine. Look i. I describe to you. Guys who aren't horse racing fans the grains of sand that those horses and those teams they compete in the kentucky derby dominant horses throughout history. Even this year the hundred forty seven kentucky derby some of the horses that several weeks back were considered to be favorites. Heading down the derby trail won't race for this reason or that reason they're not ready. They gotta louis injury they they just don't look we're going to save them for the preakness instead. We're going to work a little harder. It's it's crazy. What what. A tiny percentage of horses actually make it to that starting line. And that's the thing is it's hard just to get there. I mean the odds that you have. I mean it's a one shot deal but then how many times have you seen a horse. Get like a little assist and they have to pull the horse out or you know just the slightest little injury or maybe it's bucking at the gate. So they pulled out. It doesn't race like until the gates until those gates open in the race starts. There's a chance you're like something happens. It's truly remarkable. It's remarkable and and for them. I that's one reason. I find their store to be so so fascinating and interesting because as a guy who loves to spend time with his boys and who loves to feel that camaraderie especially in the competitive arena. What these guys have pulled off is nothing short of miraculous. And they're young and they're buber intelligent and like i love. I love that. They admit this was our last shot. This was it man because they it ain't cheap y'all it ain't cheap to buy a horse. I mean you not think about auto racing and all of the money and the resources in the funding that it takes to go auto racing but you can run a race car a bunch of times with horse racing you get one chance at the derby one they had. They run in their three year old year. And that's it and you can with the race car you can slab just about any damn sponsor on the side of the car. You know a horse. It's only market it a few ways to make money off other than just it's winnings on the track. I love why they're called boat racing. Llc travesty you know why don't it's a drinking game. It's a drinking game that they played when they were brown. And as i said to them on the in the interview they had no idea. What great kindred spirits they are to you and to me. I i i wanna call them up and i want that story like me. One only care about the horse anywhere like that's an amazing story and you're right like we. Everybody has group tax with their friends from college or high school. Or what might be and the idea of getting together and owning a horse if me and my buddies from high school college you know were Smart enough and had the money. Like i can't imagine the showing that we get into you know with the celebrations and everything if we are in their position. So you're right. You can visualize yourself with the. They've invited me on friday night. I'm going to go spend some time with them. Added a distillery. And and i can't wait to to spend that time with then we're gonna capture a bunch of content for sportscenter and other platforms. Ma social media. Certainly you guys will see their. But and then they're going to join me. Live on sportscenter at ten forty five saturday morning from the track right outside of turn one and two and i'm just thrilled that they're letting me walk this week's journey with them because they're great young man and i just want to say one last thing. I meant what. I said about the philanthropic arm. I'll just think it's so selfless of them especially at that age to to have the heart to give back when you've been so blessed i was not there at twenty. Let's see i graduated. Twenty one or two in two thousand fifteen. That was six years ago. So they're in their mid to late twenties now. I didn't have that kind of vision at that age. And it took honestly. It's interesting like with the book and and what we've been able to do philanthropic lee with never settle. Patrick abraham's was really the driving force behind even bringing that to my attention. Hey let's use this and do some good. And because as i always say it ain't a moment it's a movement and that's what those guys are doing with hot rod. Charlie and i just admire. I really admire them. I can't wait to see him. Think about it. They split their earnings five ways before they started this. So not only are they doing good. You know there. Every time hot rod charlie winds. They're taking less to help out other people like that's to have that perspective at that age. It's it's amazing it. Is i commend him. Admire them and i'm grateful for their time. How excited are you to get down there though. Not only to meet these guys. But you know bob baffert todd. Todd pletcher like how excited to get back there. This is a this is a sport that not too long ago was you knew of it but you never covered it now. It's kind of a got the masters and that's kind of your spring tradition. Now it is. And i love it so much. I love the people the what i love passion above.

Let's go back before the the the morning of louisiana derby hat. What was the tension level or the or expectation level going into that race versus the breeders cup. Since you knew that chuck had shot was definitely you know what. Let's say properly fertilize the gravity of all these situations you having this for twenty years the rest of us having understood it for two years for probably really to ons art to fully comprehend what was happening but you know we could do the math and figure out that okay hundred race right for for the win. Our did you get on the board. You got a good shot you know we kind of do data back from. I tried to be sort of cautiously optimistic whole time. And i like that sad. "Racing. Great people and you know. Somehow we were smart ones. Who decided to say yes. Aren't we gonna honestly in anybody. Marty people that don't understand the intricacies of horse racing guys. It's so damn hard to just get to may like to just get there. They get one chance a horse. It's their three year old year when they get the opportunity to run in the competed in the kentucky derby and then it might be a horse that utterly dominates his preliminary racing schedule dominates might end up scratching because of any number of reasons so just to get to the gate on saturday in the first saturday in may is nothing short of miraculous. And i just i'm thrilled. I'm thrilled for y'all. I can't imagine what was it. What was it like watching hot rod. Charlie i in the breeders cup juvenile. That must have been outrageously fun. Oh yeah. I'm in a bit of launch on into readers. Cut you are mourning like thirty two on dead like we had a really good chance to be candid and you know we loved chuck and then pattern that that. "It right to have the chance to go to t the grandest stage on another adventure. You know at one point or assumes now he's been able to kind of find that through through horse racing and and you know to be able to support at like is his whole family and then what. They grew up In reading this or you know just like it's beautiful. How does buying a horse work so marti think about any nfl team nba any athletic team. You know you're only as good as your athlete right so we are fortunate. Dog certainly is world class trainer in nasa world. Class team team kind of the hidden. Secret sauce is your bloodstock agent or your scout. And that is dennis so dennis typically goes to all the two year old sales which are typically around springtime there actually right now kind of upper state florida. A dentist goes watches. Videos looks at horses. Confirmations refused pedigrees and does a lot of work to find horses that are valued that he feels. Make sense right. Charlie happened to be a half to a champion sprinter and mentally and dennis typically doesn't buy year at horses ended up being a one year old sale and fell in love with this course. He said he has an amazing mind. Which i think. Dennis is unique in that. He loves this idea that or are more than just what they look like. They're more than just you know how fast they are. The mind of a horse is extremely important. And he just fell in love with hot rod. Charlie so he asked our group yes a couple of owners or co owners. Bill strauss and roadrunner.

"Tour head Smoked cattle river in the rebel and lo and behold, Um, just what we thought would happen did happen for most of the race, which is cattle River went to the lead, which is where he wants to be. And concert tours sat right off him. Which we thought he would be able to do. It was important to see him do and everything was looking like we thought it would look, and then they hit the top of the stretch. And okay, here goes concert tour is going to run by cat a river and And that's what happens, right? And he kind of did and you got about a head in front. And then now he kind of hit the wall and started struggling. And here came super stock for Steve aspects. And, of course, nobody was. Really high on. He had finished seventh in the previous race, not threatening either the top too, But things change a lot for three year olds and super stock, thanks to the fact that they went pretty fast early. Cattle Reverend Concert tour. They were tired. He ran right by him. They showed no fight at all. They had nothing left Tohno step up against him and Super stock one rather easily by a couple lengths. And cattle River actually fought back and beat concert tour for second by a head or something. Oh, what's up with that? Um, was it the mile and an eighth? The concert tour? Not want to go that far. Uh, Steve on the show last week had told you that he didn't think concert tour was Ah, very good. Bed in that race, and he thought his last race was a soft pace and pretty easy and he didn't think he was all that he was right. So right now they're still deciding. Bob Baffert is whether or not concert tour is gonna even running the Derby. My guess is he will Um, but right now he's non committal. So thanks Change Cattle River. I'm not sure if he's gonna run. I don't think so. He might On DSA Super stock. Definitely running on looks like the mile and a quarter works for him. He looks like a horse on the improve. He'll be a price. So he adds, a little intrigued to the race. So here we go. The field is basically set. No huge horses have dropped out. Um, hot Rod Charlie, trained by Doug O'Neill, who's been a little under the radar since winning Louisiana Derby a while ago. Will be written by Phil Ivey and Pratt. So he actually won the Derby last year on disqualification, If you remember, um, maximum security, uh Well, that was two years ago. Um and, uh Excuse me. The words from Louisiana Derby who never ran again. The winner of the Derby was flabby and practice so country house s O. Pratt is on hot Rod, Charlie Joel Rosario sticking with concert tour, So I'm guessing he's going to run but so far like I said they haven't committed So, um, anything else about the Derby? I had a note here should find it. I should have it. Yeah. So okay. Uh, the other quick thing about the Derby Since we'll start there is mention the jockeys so essential quality for one, the bluegrass eyes going to be your favorite. He's gonna be 2 to 1. I'd say 5 to 2. Maybe 3 to 1. I don't know hard to figure He's undefeated, but for some reason doesn't seem to be a horse. Everybody thinks Oh, yeah, he's the winner. Um, 5452 year old champ. Maybe it's because it took him like the stretch to win the bluegrass, um to be highly motivated. People thought he should have one more easily. He just likes the win. Hey, can stay close to the pace, which is important. He showed that last time, so he's really done everything right on D is the one to beat. After that, you know, it's hard to say where the odds are going to go. Right. You have rock your world. Impressive winner of the family. The Derby known Agenda impressive winner of the Florida Derby Hot Rod Charlie. Hmm. That's about it. Those of the next three then maybe concert tour. Maybe, um, a couple of the things about essential quality. As you probably know. I wrote the book about Dubai and Sheikh Mohammed trying to win the Derby almost 20 years ago. In fact, it was 2001 that I cover in the book. So that was 20 years ago. Of course, he did not win the Derby in 2002 didn't come close and hasn't really come very close since. And here he is with the favorite. So after spending a couple billion dollars trying to win this race, he ends up with the home bred, bred in Kentucky trained the normal way by the new hot trainer Brad Cox. So all those other moves that he made over the years trying to emulate Bob Baffert trying to win it from Dubai. None of that worked and here he is old, schooling it and he's got essential quality son of tap it. Beautiful horse five for five. And you know, this is his best chance ever. And it comes at a time when he is probably more controversial than ever. So you could look it up. But the United Nations wants to talk to Shak Mahamed because it appears he has kidnapped his own daughter. On his holding her and nobody can see her. Nobody knows what's going on. This has been going on a few years now. And the U. N would like proof of life. It's never a good sign. So, Yeah. Sheikh Mohammed probably still the biggest horse owner in the world in the United States, certainly and in England and owns so much property and spend so much money and employees so many people You don't hear about that, because you know he's the Golden Goose has been forever. And here he is. You know, maybe gonna win the Derby. Best chance ever. And so, Yeah. Here we are. Yeah, add some spice weirdly to this year's Kentucky Derby. It's also a Derby were Bob Baffert. Now the concert tour stumbled is not the talk of the Derby does not have. The favorite is not dominant. And he'll have Medina spirit. Certainly running be about 12 15 to 1. Maybe. On concert tour. Probably be eight or 10 to 1 if he shows up. Um Yeah, So that's the other thing about Baffert. You know, it's a and I've said this a few years ago when it happened. It's a tremendous failure for him to be in this position, considering The fact that he can now buy every single two year old he wants at the sales and does because of the different ownership and ownership groups. He has Hey, can literally go in and buy any horse he wants. It is one of the most amazing situations we've ever seen. That's why he has 30 40 50. Beautifully bred two year olds in his barn every year the last few years. And why he wins every maiden race at Santa Anita, and he's got so many great horses because he gets the pick of the litter every time now. And so for him to show up to the Derby with a horse that cost 35,000 like Medina spirit, And maybe that's It is an epic failure, considering the amount of talent he had, and the fact that he's pointing all of them for this race..
