"Lowered goats forts and in partnership with tsn. Welcome the season two. This is episode twenty six the raindrops hockey podcasts presented by our title sponsor in vanity radio. You got the on today. It's early in the morning in vancouver bc. But does it. Cool is chris. Their beach p. p. w. h. I all get the w. and gina. I'm sorry i always forget it. I don't know why cannot get it right. And such a dole buddy. You're you're in good company with that. Remember we'd hillary night on the podcast. Awhile that she screwed it up which made me feel good to what i screwed it up. Which then led her to screw it up and then she at least at the presence of mind to come back and correct us all so apologies but good on you for boarding and promoting looks out. There's some really cool stuff going on. And the women are starting to get revved up for their world championships which are going to be an august. And calgary thankfully put together and will be a great event that wince ford and it's a little cool in the morning syria though drags like we just had a heatwave go through ontario and it's actually not bad this morning we record on thursday. It's like twenty two degrees which is beautiful. I don't know if you caught the overdrive segment with. Oh dog and hayes and nodal talk about and brian is talking about how he comes. A legendary family of sweaters. I mean people. You gotta lot and again i thought of you because we've traveled enough over the years where i mean you break bead. Just get in from the elevator to the front of the law. It's a brutal. Not just the travel but to raise wonderful when we're sitting on a set somewhere and they're like yeah we're going to be up in four minutes and right away. I feel the sweat run down my shoulder blades. And then the the poor makeup woman as their hang on. Can i grabbed your forehead again. She's forty seven times with what a sponge wood even having rose mad. He's a sweater all my god. You gotta see this segment. You know those guys that you do the show. And it's you're such a big part of that show. But when they had giggling and laughing it's infectious because noodles is just about fallen off his chair laughing as described. You know how the khaki pants that is on goals and everybody where they've been sent to the leuven paris nuts. They need to be studied by university. Professors and what not just because of everything that has been collected in body fluids. And i'm like. Oh god but that's all oughta was it was crazy hot and i'm i'm finicky as we've talked about with with my yard right if soon as my grass needs to be mowed. It needs to be mowed and it doesn't matter if i've got plans in the afternoon if i wake up in the morning and i look at my grass and grass is grows. Said it'll go the idea but go to bed and before it's dark you looking looks nice. You wake up in the morning and you're like what happened in the hours since i last saw it grown two inches so i'm not guy so it was forty degrees with the humidex forty two i think yesterday and i cut the grass forty degree not wise not wise at all so i'm in the backyard and i've just like i'm rose and holly was out shopping. Doing whatever doing and i'm so hot. Like i'm not going to drag myself into the house. What am i gonna do dripping with sweat so got the garden. Hose out and so the backyard with the hose over my head and adjust what are you. Are you eleven i. Well i felt. Like i wasn't drinking out of the hose because that's gross. I was showering with the hose. And she can see us. What are you doing. She's from the top deck and she snapped about ten pictures by this point. We need to see. We need to see uncle. Dovers song tao was mid week for me. So i'm glad that the heat wave is over and i was that the one you posted on your instagram that we've got the furnace face school. Yeah no that was the beginning of the heat wave and yesterday was as it turned out the the end. I feel as i get older i do. I'm doing worse and worse with the heat. Which is probably natural. I suppose you'd think you'd be smart enough to not do laborious chores. When it's forty four degrees with humidex realize had you waited two hours in the heat of the day break you'd probably would have been better off like keno that right. Yeah i know that. But i couldn't. I was just looking going pisses me off and i wanted to get it done. Like what the hell else did you have to do it. Not wait like. I'm curious about your. I'm the impatient one. And i'm curious about this. Like why what are you doing. The i know it probably could have waited and especially enjoying a bit of a reprieve here too right. I mean you went through the world championships with your your your schedule upside down because the montreal canadian swept the winnipeg jets. We'll get the headline shortly. We've got a bit of a break here. We're not doing hits for tsn this week. It's kind of weird so in answer to your question. I didn't have much of anything going on. So i could have waited. Probably shouldn't not next time drake's to learn weeks. Been good actually playing golf today with nathan. Lafayette old team mate of mine in bold new york and then we got traded to la together and haven't seen him in a while he moved out to vancouver is taken a new job out here and so his son and my two older boys and nate nice. We're gonna play in a five some of this afternoon and five. Some what is this busy nonsense. No just an our course because we can roll along here like you don't need to be lining up a putt from four directions. Put it on the ground and hit it. you're gonna miss it anyway and so yeah. Look forward to plan what they meant this weekend. We got we got a collection. Drags i if i make the effort i take a picture of it. We have a a run of the dump. Come this week on. You gotta video this. This is a must my older boy. Matt who's who's kind of like driving. Actually his wife man rupe is the driving force. If things aren't used for like a minute they're going to the dump while she's amazing. I love that no storage. What do you need extra stuff saved for so we got a pile of stuff. There's a set of tires in the garage. I don't even know what carter from been there so long like event so we're taking them to the recycle thing man. We've got the we got. We got some crap that gotta go. That's awesome yeah. We need to see this because did it. So many times on the podcasts. We've talked about the things that happen in raised world and one of them is minimizing stuff and making sure everything has its place and all of that. If i can get cami like a squirrel look at the you know. Look at look over here. Then i can get stuff into the garbage. Otherwise she's like a steel trap at the front door. She's like her mother. You'd like to save things and allies on this call. So allie who cameras minnie's will our knees will she will know. This honey has a section in her house with all these tupperware bins great and the role label. Okay like macaroni flown. No no things that have been around the house that she saves in case somebody you know is forgotten because they got six kids in all these grandkids and my favorite that i that i ever saw was old phone chargers like there's full georgia from like a palm. Remember those things like who they who needs this or extra left gloves. It's amazing nothing gets out of that house. It's it's remarkable so there's an interesting trend. I dunno world enough that it doesn't really make a lot of sense in your boys or are past this stage as well but with mason engaged. She's twenty two east twenty they get up in the morning and don't care in fact i think it's trendy if you wear two different socks so you wear blue and orange one as an example which is ridiculous. But i don't know if it says no see cami cami and i got into an argument about this a while ago. And she's like if you can't wear different socks like like why are you so uptight who the hell cares. He missed master stocks all the time. See i'm okay with different socks. As long as i'm not in public people are going to see it right like i'm not going to the golf course with two different colored thumbnails news doing that. I mean there's you have to be respectful the history. But if you're going to if you're going to store like what difference does it make it doesn't make any difference and but but see that's where cami for me doesn't seem like i. I would think that anything wasteful would drive cami bonkers so if there's still good use in whatever that item is in this case. I mean who doesn't have a box mismatched socks. I mean socks man eaten in our dryer. I don't understand how that happens. But it happens so we have over four wash cycle dregs now. If that other sock doesn't show up at four washes poof. It's gone it's gone so no you have to have another box. And then the miss of mix and matching and all four washes. I've got that blocks the small box because it's not going to get to be a big box. We've gotta get going at episode twenty-six earbud good interview with andrew monte upon the star one of the stars team canada capturing gold and lafayette the men's world's story he was they were specially when they come from binded them face the adverse stephen os pre start in three assault brigade. Have some fun with andrew. I'm sure he's fired up his knee leg. You you end to those world championships. Did you win older self. No two silvers. Yeah but still. I mean disappointing. Because canada's always expected to do well not that silver is doing well but you gotta believe amid the disappointment that andrew. Gio ponti and the calgary flames experienced this past season albany experienced that he had you know ian latvia which was off the charts is got a fire him up this offseason to get going next year while i just i just loved the way like from his perspective that the team turned when he showed up in the line. A- like no matter what else happened in like darcy camper had to get better and he did and they had to put their game together but he showed up and they won the scored because they weren't before and it changed the second that he jumped into the lineup that it was an amazing tournament for. Yeah alright ray. You're talking about the dump this week and you've promised now to the rain grades podcasts. You're gonna capture some of this on video so we'll hold you at your word. There will not be taking a fifty to the dump correct. No you can do a lot of things. It will not be taking anything. This is my son's pickup truck. It is but q x fifties. It's way too comfortable. Way to clean. Way to smooth to be taken to the ball to the dub and i i love zip zip boys around my younger guys to go to soccer. We spent a lot of time on the highway. Some the the do foursomes that we normally ever skins game with on friday. I'm surprised at the response. And the reaction from these guys to the cue sixty in all. It's it's a flashy sporty. Nice car right and man. They are like looking this thing going. Where did you get fat. So it's a head turner. There's no question about that. But i'm okay with that side of it you know. I normally don't like to draw attention to what i'm driving or what i'm doing you know. That's kind of the tv world we live in. We get enough attention. This thing has it's an eye catcher and you get a chance on your drive to it a little heavy with the right foot. A did the other day. I purposely the area. That i live in. We've got a number of of side roads country countryside roads that are fully paved. And you can see like a kilometer ahead of you so you know that you know. There's there's no trouble a at. I may or may not have hit the gas the other day and holy smokes was i didn't even like i may maybe when two-thirds for five seconds seven seconds. Maybe and. that's as fast as i never. I ever need go in a vehicle so phosphine a check out the cue sixty and you check out the q x fifty. It's compact luxury. Suv with class. Leading cargo capacity to sixty eight horsepower turbo engine. All right headlines rape presented by tim hortons and their nhl superstar sticks. They're back this year. Featuring shea weber lies pederson. Patrice bergeron. Austin matthews leon draisaitl and connor hellebuyck. You can collect all six. They're available for a limited time five dollars ninety nine cents each plus tax. You can get them in restaurant you can go through the drive through or you can pick them up on the tim hortons app. Let's start with this. Drake sang question or one point. Just think of the of the collectibles shave weber. Still playing unreal. Gina lester from tsn. Mclean my brothers either does tony. Does our music plays with leicester. That's fantastic yeah lusters in. Have you noticed. He's in the tim. Hortons commercial yes. He's the guy fifth straight to fame baby for example how he says it james i t's lester is a character but every time i see that commercial i started chuckling. Because leicester's first awfully bb commanders. Why we start headlines with your former team the highlanders set we take on a tabby lightning. They knock off the boston bruins in six. I remember a couple of episodes ago. Wondering mokaba mary right. You talked about how he was taverna. A slow transition from the new jersey devils new york islanders. All did he find his stride here in the stanley cup. Playoffs scored his sixth and seventy seventh goal. Last night. you know travis. Jj jack scores his first brock nelson chips in with his fifth and sex. So the pieces of that puzzle that make up the new york. Islanders have come together nicely because luck. The boston bruins of were fermentable going into that series. I mean for me. It was a peckham series of fact wrongly. I might have given the bruins a bit of an edge going into the best of seven. I remember you saying south a week or two ago. What is it about this islanders. Team you just. You can't knock them off. And they've proven. That yet again. While i i saw stat yesterday drake's after the islanders wall and six two and eliminated the bruins lou. Lamoriello has managed a team in the play offs for in five decades. It's almost like who knows what he's doing like it'd be amazing like they go out there and they'd lose don't forget they lost honors lee their captain and he's just started skating but i i i kind of seems like a long shot that he would be able to play it all this year but so now they've got some money because legal still long-term injury reserve they have a need and were does lugo when he goes to the place that he knows best and that's new jersey any cards. Oh paul mary who. I felt at the time kind of fit their style of play lots of times you get a player and he's a really good player but he doesn't really fit the style of the team that acquires them and it just doesn't work. It seemed to me like palmeri was gonna work yet. It didn't work. And i think i got the key rights moga. When he came to the the islanders he had to shave his beard. Gay and that was. That's his superpower because in the playoffs you can rule bearman and cow. Palmeira can grow a beard from ten in the morning to six pm. He's got a full beard guys on fire and i think that's the key. Looks like an islander. And i'm telling you that will barn. That place would be pop and last night. Did you see the corner. John ludeke willie celebrating with the fans. I'm telling you there's something about that place it is. I don't know it's just a hockey rink. It's not an arena. It's a rink. I love that though to see the decky out there. I mean you're in it right like you're not worried about you know whether your safety is in question or any of the nonsense now you could as an owner of an nhl club. Or a sports franchise superfan. I mean you are. You're just incredibly wealthy and you can afford a luxury that every one of us would like to have. Why shouldn't you enjoy at the way. That john lewis decky and the new york. Islanders are enjoying the moment they they're few and far between. I thought watching last night. I'm like this. Is such a team like team team. So in the first round the goalie. Is delia sarokin. Not in the second round. Now semyon varlamov. Who uses two goalies. Like that like barry. Trotz is a maestro behind the bench. And i would say if the nhl hopefully goes to the olympics in two thousand twenty. Two half of their coaching staff is standing behind the bench in this eastern final. It's not the eastern. Find like jon cooper barry trotz. Yes other like unbelievable. That berry has done what he done. Just think of what management does for these teams that are stumbling all over the place. Islanders go get lou. Lamoriello lou turns around and hires barry trotz and there are some coaches and managers that get recycled. Sometimes they're just the best guys right. So is i would say that's part of the part of the appeal. Here hot couldn't agree more. Let's just investigate some hindsight here. What do you think of. The washington. Capitals as thinking or brian gone. The general manager of the washington capitals when they see the constant success. A barry trotz with the new york islanders. I mean he. He brought the washington. Help bring watch some capitals. The stanley cup championship. And then they just call them now. Where we're gonna go a little cheaper here. I think we can blake is not one of the bigger blunders that we've seen among ownership and management in years. It is and the way i would or the analogy. I would make is that. There are certain things you can cut budget on and probably get away with it if that's part of your driving forces at that time and there's certain things you shouldn't like you don't use styrofoam for the framework of your house like you don't. That's not the place to cut. Budget cut budgets. somewhere else. They lost or they let barry trotz goal and they hired todd reirden who they were very high on and then now they got peter la violette. But i think you know i mean. Todd's a good coach played with todd. Peter of course his his pedigree is such that you stand up and take notice but basically lead berry goal and now they've spent time trying to find and replace berry and it just it. It's i mean everybody's got to make that decision at the ownership. Gm level right. They gotta make that decision. Then you've gotta live with it. The islanders took three minutes once. Barry trotz was on the market. And they're like that's the guy we want and they've been they've been terrific then. It'll be a hard series. It will be hard series. And and i'm going to go back to tampa bay in just a moment but because we're on a bit of a coaching team does the autom- done everything that he does has a dollar amount attached to it. He's the owner of the carolina hurricanes for anybody listening or watching and isn't familiar with that as come out publicly to say that he doesn't wanna own the carolina hurricanes have rod brind'amour's. Isn't the coach yet here. We are and we talked about this under so ago. Going into the playoffs. The expectation was that brind'amour's extension would be announced prior to the playoffs. Well i think they've got the framework of the brindamour extension figured out but good on rod. He wants his assistant coaches looked after he wants the training staff for the carolina hurricanes. I believe and to what extent i don't know but looked after and done in his doug hilson to say we've got a cap. I don't know what the ask is to what the expected rate is of an assistant coach or training staff. Or any of that but brindamour digs in. Edmonds is fine. I'm not signing my extension until these guys get looked after and in the meantime you've got a team like the new york rangers who probably higher gerard lawn. Rick talk it has interviewed for the rangers. But they're sitting there. Poking around gone want is the deal. Why isn't brindamour done. You know why mess around with stuff like that and the reason comes to mind is we just had the conversation barry trotz in washington. Well soldier exits. What's that old think. Cut your nose off to spite your face. Yeah like so. You're gonna dig your heels in on assistance that make a couple of hundred thousand dollars the trainers that do that are support the backbone of your of your team that you never really see but the guys know about you have something that really works and carolina And you're gonna let your main guy the glue of your organization goal because you're not gonna look after the other people i would say that's a horrible decision because he may think tom dundee may think. There's lots of good coaches here. I'll just go get another one but that doesn't always don't that doesn't often work you watch rod brind'amour's speak to those players. You watch the way. Those players react to rod. They fit fit there and it's also not at the point where he can you. You smell like the shelf. Life of coach. He's not there now. It's not there it in my mind that would be. That would be terrible decision. I think it gets done. I also i also carolina's sake for sure but even in the handshake with the tampa bay. Lightning like man. You can tell the rod brind'amour's having a meaningful conversation with nervosa. Left skin a handshake you. You've got fifteen. Twenty seconds max to say what you want to say and it's probably spur of the moment. It's not like he had been thinking about this for days cried still naturally because he knows would being a great leader is about and he can tell when he's looking at great goaltending and that's the lightning have been vassil levski but with got me was it wasn't just you know we learned after the fact he paraphrase what he said the vassal left skin. How good he was but when he's poking is if you could soon now when you you you look at his quote of what he said he said the vast levski and watch the video and he's poking them and you can just you can feel it you can feel you just say you're the in best goaltender. There isn't a one. You know it. And i want you to believe it like constantly going. That's my heart rate. Beat you don't watch this unlike league. Who who wouldn't wanna play for a coach like this and the one thing that carolina will find out is if they decide not the sign. Rod is it. There are lots of good coaches but there are some that have just something a little special. And he has that he has all right. We're gonna have lots time to drift through the semi finals but just a thought off top my head. Is there a better team. And we're gonna find out but is there a better team than the tampa bay lightning as we know race racing. Get ready for the sammy's a desert and and the i'll tell you what i don't like that's going to happen. It's already mumbled around. You know people talk about it. I'd say quite a bit but we're gonna hear lots and lots and lots about it is the way that tampa bay handled nikita kucherov. And how they've got a ninety four million dollar payroll for an eighty one million dollar cap and anybody can do that do it. Yeah you you need a the star player to need a major hip procedure to miss the season to be able to do that. Is that all you could. You could probably guesstimate. That kucherov could have played a few days earlier a week earlier. It's a gas. I mean i don't know. I'm i'm a little bit short of being a doctor and i haven't evan observed the patient but they played within the rules. But if you're gonna say that which people are then you have to acknowledge the way that tampa bay has built their team. And i keep going back to this. Strikes under vassil levski was first round. Pick right struggling. And he's the backbone of that team. Victor hedman was the number two overall pick. Steven stamkos was the number one overall pick bull case. So let's go through a few other guys. Keep a kuch drawn. Second round pick brayden point third round. Pick anthony sally. Fourth round pick ondra platt seventh round. Pick yeah lost. I don't even know where they found him. Another pick. yanni gourde tyler. Johnson not drafted alex lorne fourth round. Pick this team was built under the guidance. Drafting guidance of al murray. They're drafting ability. Their their way of finding significant players out. dust is as ing. It is and so everybody else could have drafted. Andre polat six times because of taken andre nikita kucherov. Thirty players were three. Five players were picked in front of him. Tyler johnson ignani ordered. Anybody could have had those guys. Yeah would anybody in the league. One brayden point while you had three rounds to draft them. Why is ample smart. It's got nothing to do with a ninety one million dollar cap. I think i'm defensive about it. Because the media story is the one that and the low hanging fruit everybody grabs onto but it takes a little bit of time to recognize how that team was built. No and look. I mean everybody. Cry cries capture dementia. I mean and what gets me annoyed is you can't do it like it's not like the. Nhl says well. We're not gonna pay attention to what the cap dealings of the tampa bay lightning are. I mean they went above and beyond my head office of the national hockey constantly in communication with the lightning through the whole nikita kucherov process to make sure it was on the up and up like there's no advantage to the nhl to have the tampa bay lightning. You know. Try and complete capture circumvention so the perception is out there. Jealous clubs around the league right. Who see all of this now. Bearing fruit in the health of the lightning and how dominant they are. But but but do you think it's the league or do you think it's just the fans. Well i mean you talk to more managers than me as or their managers pissed at this to not pissed but but annoyed. It's it's a little bit like you know burkey. You know snapping back when when asked about the pittsburgh penguins. How many years ago. And they won the goddamn battery in sidney crosby so you get a little bit of that other general managers but to your point earlier these guys are sharp dudes and they're sitting there going. Wow okay but who on Kucherov had to do to make this thing happen. Wake and it's it's pretty difficult when we wrap up headlines with a visit to winnipeg player exit interviews with media on wednesday. I don't know we might. We might have a bit of a debate here. You and i have talked about this. Prior to recording the podcasts march is taking heat for going after the partner players safety not backing down at all in his media availability on wednesday. And i was on a percent candidate. I find my me. I didn't like the fact that you know he. He's going after and the fans and everybody percent. Nobody gave winnipeg a chance in the regular season. Nobody gave winnipeg chance in the playoffs. Everybody wanted to see calgary and edmonton around one. I don't know. I mean maybe locally. That's what he was hearing. I don't think any of us presented. That and i think that that's just nonsense. Which is easily pushed aside. I got all the time in the world for a player who thinks he got jobbed. And i don't buy that. That was one hundred. Seventy some foot backcheck. Because he made no attempt in the puck he dropped his hand off his lowered his shoulder and went right through jake efforts so i believe it was a sustainable play but for into challenge the department of players safety about it. If that's how you feel if you feel you were wrong. By george pharaohs than i wanna hear about it because too often we don't get that brutal honesty from an nhl player let alone an nhl star so hey chuckled. At some the media response to march Particularly the responses out of montreal. Let him talk. Let them say why does he. Why does he have to say whatever. Everybody agrees with. His opinion now like Wanting like and the media can go ahead and have an opinion on it too. I thought he got going a little. And it was like going downhill any started with the suspension and then it was scattershot. After that like everybody was in the crosshairs he looked frustrated. You know another year ends and you can't you can't do anything about it and your actions are what took you out of the series not not somebody else. Nobody else did anything other than you might. Not like the department of player safety's decision. I'm sure your nazem cadre doesn't love his either but put yourself in a position to be to be suspended. I'll tell you. What would it frustrated me if i were should i flee i would have felt like i got wacked harder than everybody else other than gadgetry. That's what that's what would piss me off. Because i would want to say to george perils. You gave me four games for this. Will this better be the standard man. These little piddly five thousand dollar fines on sense. Like if i'm watching the game and i know mark does because we know what a hockey junkie he is. He was on our podcast talking about. Yeah would you not be pissed at andre. Polat didn't get anything. Yes i would be. I'd be like what. What are we doing here like. Do we know what we're doing here. That's what would frustrate me it. So i'm okay with him voicing his frustration his disagreement. I i didn't think it was that big a deal. I didn't love the fans and the media and all that stuff like you know like first of all the media's going to do with the media's gonna do and he's best not even to let it hassle. But i didn't know didn't think that he needed to go beyond that but like i said i. I'm a person that gets frustrated. By the time. I get to the period of frustration. I can't even remember what i've said in the first five minutes of the. I'm not even kidding. Drake's i'm not i finish and i'm like i don't even really know what i said but i feel way better while and just wrap it up. I i believe in in his heart of hearts mark shortly knows that was a spendable so he may have been way more apologetic or just apologetic period. Because he's not apologetic. If it had been a one or a two game suspension four games i believe in march Mind in the minds of the winnipeg jets minds a lot of people around. The nhl was excessive. I'm not saying it was exactly sasso. believes it was a one. Maybe a two game suspension not a four-game suspension. See i wonder if the league went for thinking that would be five games in the series and try flea would be back for game six. However they got dusted in four email one shapely went out. The rest of their forwards went with them. Connor healers dubois had one point. Each wheeler had none like they got dominated their top guys and pulsed. Ask wasn't healthy so it win. I mean you just don't win like that and good. Pure luke dubois for saying. I wasn't hurt. i didn't play well enough. I didn't do enough to contribute. And i've got to be better. I've got to work harder and be better next season. Yeah you know what that you know what that kid needs. In my opinion he needs to spend the summer finding his engine. Never mind getting stronger and bigger and all that. He's a big enough guy. He's a strong enough guy finds an engine. Fine what motivates you. Because he plays too much like a guy. That's five foot nine. He's it's hard to use that size all the time. But if he can find his engine he'll be a terrific player and i'm sure the jets are counting on that are irate Forty maha performance players the past week. You wanna go first. I do because i'm worried. You're gonna take my guy i'll get. I'm going with kyle mary. The beard growing superpower kyle. Mary seven goals in the playoffs. Just looks like an islander fits with that team acquired it. The deadline didn't really get a whole lot done in the regular season but once the beard came back. Yeah myemma performance player. The weeks got seven goals in. Its kyle palmeri. Well you did take my guy. I've learned over time here to make sure that you've got a plan. B. c. and even plan d right and that's the beauty of the playoffs is that you know. There are so many good players in so many great performances. However nowhere in the yamaha fine print. Next time you're having a drink watching the game rain. I are still refining. Our signature cocktails were were working around the premise of the cc in ginger. But ray you talked about orange. Maybe a blood orange mixture. You know all that was that was that was in addition to my orange from young. I might add like ed. Just just a different lock to have like the orange through it like that. The blood orange oil. Yeah i see what you're going for. This is going to sound bad. But i'm gonna say it anyway. We need your tail off like yeah. I do know what you're talking about. But what the hell what are you doing man. What's wrong with you know we're just compare. We'll compare cocktails and refreshing. Canadian club would ski and enjoy our interview today with andrew mangione bonnie all right hander. Obviously the nhl season for. You didn't go the way that you were expecting calgary. Flames season didn't go the way you were hoping were expecting so digust through what it was like. I mean you go through all the protocols of the year it's a shortened season. There's challenges with bad in the national hockey league and you get the call at the end of the year reminder. Roberto along were scotty salmon hockey canada in general saying man. We need you to come to latvia. Was there any hesitation. Given the fact that it's always a privilege in an honor to play for your country. Yeah i know. I kind of jumped right at the bed. When i heard that obviously there i wanted to kind of knows restrictions and know all the information that i once. I heard that they kind of wanted me. I kind of had to go right. It's was one of your dreams. Grown up obviously wants to win the stanley cup. The other one is to win a gold medal. This is kinda my opportunity to go there and represent team. Canada was just. It was an honor and just an amazing tournament and amazing feeling and it was just those just awesome putting on that jersey flippers time. There's some great stories of guys that that had the scramble over there get their gear zip over there end up in corporate. T know you were laid. Were you want your own or to have support annul. I will actually went over with our mackey on the states theme. So that was that was good. Think good thing. I had someone else that would probably got lost at frankfurt. Airport there buddy. I got the place. You're you're stuck in your own for three days in a brand new year food you got tested in those about it. That was all your first couple of days now. you didn't. you didn't have to land in like moscow or anything like that. No one from calgary montreal montreal to frankfurt in frankfurt to five that's bad if if russia and airport mandrakes is traveled with me andrew. I get lost like in my backyard. Legacy few said we were traveling with somebody. Andrew instantly. I'm thinking of ray and hedegaard miller or or someone i mean. Ray would fly from vancouver to montreal when we're going overseas just so he could meet up with the rest of us somebody who can lead them overseas. Yeah that would be. I haven't done so. I i kinda gone overseas so i was a little nervous. I have rational standards. In sam buddy. You're gonna get lost brantford airport. I know you're you're you're done. And i'm like no. I can't miss my flight. What's on buses buses us the different terminals area. Do you think any of out has to do with our italian heritage and our mums did everything fourth or other. So you get over there and you're you're in quarantine and the team is stumbling all over the place like rethinking all like this might be over before i get started here. Yes big time. I was lucky enough to go. Watch the third game in your rena. Men sounds good to get out once we lost that. I'm like all men are throwing three here. I don't even know if we can make it into the quarterfinals right. Now let alone. Whatever we're expecting to win gold or may not make it into quarterfinals. Saddam was that was going through my mind. I'm like this came all this way. And i'm not going to be playing meaningful games right so i was a little little nervous there but then once they got in and i was able to play was just just an awesome. Feeling when you jump in the lineup. They draw glad the head coach. Put you with connor brown and adam henrique. And i don't recall that it takes thirty seconds and you guys were on the board something like that like it had the feel unbelievable just to get in the game and then ban. You're on the sheet right away. Yeah and i think that was just a goal for our whole team. Those brownie gordon adam. Sure and he just got in with this gates but it was just the we've had are having problems kind of foreign and everything like that. So i pluck wasn't there for us than i think it was. Just a simple simple player was deity Or something like that and brought he was there for the rebound offman and not just got our whole team gave us confidence in that that i think fourth game was big for us. Just the win. And just you know like i said gain confidence and belief in ourselves and you've had two successful. Nhl years in a row. And you can get on a heater like when you like most scores when you when you score like. They seem to come. Have you been on one like this like so many so fast. It seemed like you scored every gold for canada for four games and all. This was visited refund tournament. I'd say right for whatever may be in junior and all that got some years but this was this was on the world stage score light bad and it was just the big goals. Think this at the right time for our team. And obviously i gotta get ready to brownie. And i think they'll sue guys are really good hockey. Players really smart. It was easy for me to just go in and just play my game and be comfortable buying my game so those two guys like i said there really lucky players have made it easier for me. Played on three of those teams in the ruse. Always a guy or two or three that you learn. Vote off the ice. Sure on the ice off the like oh man. This guy is not what i thought. He's foreign like you guys were stuck together. You were card playing there. I don't know what else xbox and or whatever like is there a guy to like that. Yeah there nick. all nick. Fog played against the north bay. And all that so there are some heated arguments before that on the ice than kinda was nervous. Kind of going into this than he is a funny guy. He's a character. He's ellen jokes every three minutes yet. Molly guys laugh at everything frowny. I kinda knew brownie through over here so sometimes skated with them. The other guy would be dry. That i didn't really know him going into it at all playing with tanya chan has he kind of a good word to less than a. You're gonna like this guy so then. We kinda drifted to each other in. Yeah he's a great guy and there's just. There's a lotta great guys on that team. That i didn't know anyone on that team. So is just great opportunity for me go there and meet guys meet management which aimed home gave me the call and it was just all around unbelievable. Just experience for me. You mentioned stature really quickly that like where did i can't even believe he pulled. That was unbelievable that it was handed to to. Yeah and i was. I was yelling item on the ice. I dropped it to. i'm yelling. Shoot the shooter and then gay made an mike. Okay shoot again. Judy split between his legs. This does it. Gives east another guy. And i'm like oh my god and then he finally made a nice pass over those just an unreal. Play i was. I was losing my mind off. The ice is saying a discussed the night. Let's get a shot out of the but great play by him. So happy that we won that kings of tulsa gerard gallant ease. He's a really zainal. A really good person a really good guy. What's he like as a coach. he's a great guy. Read it a. He wants the best for you. The best team you know he wants to win. That's always great negotiator. but yeah. He's a goat for us as condos down needed to be calm down. He was you know he was kinda laid back when he needed to be laid back in. That made us easy at easier for us. The blairite but if you mess up or taking long shifts or something like that. He'll let you know all which is rightfully. So he's he's a he's going to be a good coach. And you know kinda lance m is going to be lucky team new all right well. Let's we've talked a bit about your goals andrew and the success of the ad. Obviously i mean a dream come true to represent your country and win gold but individually tournament. Mvp which i think. I read a quote somewhere where you felt like it was a little unexpected. You might have been the only one at the tournament who didn't expect and then on top of that us score the overtime winner As we've talked about in the quarter-finals over russia and then two more in the semi final against the americans to advance. So if you're plotting the perfect scenario for an individual performance on a world championship stage would not be it as a canadian. I mean yeah you score the overtime winner against the russians to more to beat the americans and then you celebrate gold and the aftermath which includes tournament. Mvp it's hard to write a better script overall than that. Yeah looking back on. It sues pretty pretty cool right obviously got the history there with the russian states and everything like that so be to help team. You know for those goals than i did. It was just unreal moment. I think you kind of felt a little bit. more awesome. Purvey discuss the capital bank. He was my go-to guy. Harry there have in life and basically after the game. But yeah i saw over there was honestly agreed retirement ornament and then the mvp just on top was just. It was awesome. But like i said. I i think conor brown or even not manrique their boeing. Both right there. They both easily one. B b trophy as while those like. I said those are great players and kinda kinda did this at the line. So there's just it was awesome. How heavy was that thing like that. And the preorder was like this big block of crystal. I'm getting home. You wanna see the the pretty pretty heavy but it's nice now. Were you looking at around with you now for day-to-day yeah audit at the like this through the airport now. Is that thousand easy weird. I was wondering how i was gonna pack. Then i'm like this doesn't fit anywhere. Selanne ads carried on the plane. And all the guys are giving it to me address stratus. I'm late showing it off or whatever and give it based on a little heavy dialect for the airport. No you should ride that. Man that is unbelievable achievement. You mentioned kevin little bank in bury. You played for the late. Dale howard chuck Just an amazing player in person. Can you tell us the big deal from from your eyes pay allied like used at delta. Awesome guy awesome burston. He always wanted the best for you. i would still talk to him after after a day's in berry and he was still be guiding me and it was like my mentor road. Call veneer helper. I had a question for us in the summer. healing lives. Probably fifteen minutes from me though. It's still golfing within his son. Ben and yeah. It was very sad day when he passed but yet he always wanted the best for you. Honestly i don't think i would be in the. Nhl there was a for him. He gave me the opportunity really in the whole berry organization given the opportunity. Nobody else was right. I was smart forward. Plan aaa hockey and you know he saw something in me and yeah i eason. Say can't say too much nice things about him like he's always an awesome guys. I don't know he's speechless. I am still shocked that you know. He's not here with us anymore. When when you're playing in burien you're starting to ring up the points and you know you're a smaller guy and you can see other guys getting talked about more than you and you're like wait a minute. What about me. what about me and like it. Was there a point where you're like. I don't know if anybody's noticing or was there a point where you're like. You know what i can do. This or was it rich was probably one of each. I think i had a lot of confidence about mike. Okay as smart player but so putting points still. Doing good by the other is a lot of times rise. They know this. I don't know maybe don't what it is but people aren't really noticing me like you said I went through the whole first. Nhl draft sat bear and philly. Then it gets like dead. And i was told yet. While you're going to be on you're gonna be going and then i was okay and then next year after that i was sitting there for the first six rounds in than they even my died instead. May sorry for bringing you back here again because honestly Were gonna draft it. In as students said that i think two picks later i was. I was selected. So yeah there was times our said. I don't know i'm going to be impacting. This drafter you know even be invited to camper show anyone. Would i got thankful thankfully. The flames janssen. It's working out. Or i'd say both of us Andrew couple years ago guy tape colorado in the first round and that was really the first time on an extended basis. I got to got to watch you play. And i was like. Oh my god. Where did this guy come from like you were at your energy on. The ice. i thought was contagious. Have you always played like that because it seems now like you. Just you're jump to the game assign is what pushes your skill like. It's not the other way around. I'd say that right. I think me being a smaller player. I just want to be as hard as i can on the park be energetic. Get in their battle. That ronald series was easy to get up. Or i'll tell you the end though is incredible just all the fans and i kind of missed that part of the game of the year. The by austin all just a crazy atmosphere in that aspect. Yeah that's just the type of game. I've blades someone's always watched us someone's always playing act like it's your kind of last ship all all the time last game. 'cause that's that's always been my mentality goldfish. 'cause in smaller house raised in just the path had been on. I gotta give my all every every shift in nashville. I try to do you. Guys went through coaching change. Which for those that have never done. That is just chaotic beyond belief. I mean from one day. Somebody's in charge. The next day somebody else's in charge when darryl sutter calls you up for zoom call before before you actually could take over like do you ever come across before. He's gonna way about them doesn't he. Knew yes yes he does Brother is kind of the player development so kind of new. I guess maybe through that way by never daryl's themselves but he's a good coach trade. He i don't like his style and a way because he he'll push you gonna push you to your max and not for you want. He wants to win and everybody else wants to win. And he's gonna try to push. Push our guys yourself to be the best player you can be right. I think that in all his big thing is work ethic and have it hardened to keaton in all you do that on a regular basis. There's gonna be no problem you know you listen to a structure and everything like that. But he's going to be a vote for us. I think he's gonna bus and be the best players that we can be. You know that's what pushes us to the next level. On biggest serta data the playoffs consistently insert when he blog games and hopefully boron and when the when the cop. You're you're back home finely. You're able to move around a little bit. What is the next few weeks. Look for is just relax. As a goal is everywhere equity. You gotta do hopefully a little bit all three of those. What's your handicap start. What's your what's your handicap on. I'm not very good. I don't even know my anti-capitalism man if the work i like the gave i'll go with do buddies have some fun out there and hopefully this share anything. I'm gonna get a membership and started are really getting my game. So i ordered the by. Who set of clubs. Hopefully that'll help. Actually it's always the weapons andrew. The guy my own buzzer from actually fail our jugs so he gave me those lies. I figured maybe i should retire. Those on they're a little bit longer than i guess first round or are you gonna card around the tournament. Mvp trophy maybe actually. But your body's you have to you have to be carried around. So hey phil mickelson can do it. You can do it man. Yeah i maybe. I should do that. Maybe i should do the same video. They're absolutely we'll long you. You're absolutely joe. You're gonna do now like what are you going to do for summer training. How does how do you get ready for next year to just to be ready to go finally looks like it will be a normal start time. The animal training camp that sorta of salt probably take a couple week or two off here. And then and i trained with andrew. O'brien downs ronald so. He's a great guy there so they got a pretty good setup or out there and they got connections on ice on ice with them and there's a lot of good. I guess any jump players that go there so it's great setup and you know andy's as far guy in again he pushes you to be the best that you can be writing so obviously i don't wanna get quicker faster stronger and the ads every summarized medical head back there and you know it's going to be good for you obviously if you've got a lot more motivation to work with going into the offseason coming off the world championship and looking forward to another good year with the calgary flames. Thanks for doing this. We know you're busy a lot of media and gauge based on the wind and everything. That's going on but enjoy as much downtime as you can andrew thank you. Thanks for thanks for your time andrew. All the best have agreed yet. Thank you all right. We'd like to raise a glass to our guest today. Andrew monje upon a cheers andrew brought to you by our friends at canadian club. Whisky and talk about a young man who's earned a bit of a reprieve here as he talked about at the end of the interview. Ray going to be doing a little golf or relaxing in ontario. These young guys they get right back at it they one or two weeks off and then back in the gym back routine back on the ice student everything they have to be. You know what happens. Drake's you see it. You know you know you need a couple of weeks off you start looking around and everybody doing stuff in your mouth wait a minute i gotta get going here. I'm falling behind like a little bit of panic. Sets in and then the other thing is you need the routine like you need to get back to it and you might start slow like but man you gotta get back into it and what a tournament he had. What a good year in cowdery started slow and many got roland finish really strong and then goals in four of his last five games and then he went over to europe and manny was unreal. You know what i liked about the interview like. I asked him about the players around the team. But i didn't know nick. Paul was a character nominee. Either like his demeanor on the ice wouldn't tell you that now. I'm like i loved that nick. Paul is a is a jokester like that. I know troy stature is from his time in vancouver management. Lots of energy. But i i like that to ut up perfectly because as you experienced with former teammates whatever the team might be. I mean the the player or the personality that you envision. Brief interactions on the ice. Or whatever is completely different when you get to know that player as as a teammate. And he acknowledged nick. Paul he nick. Fall didn't like each other at all in head battles to wall. I would say the guy for me. Like that was steve stumped me thomas. He beat the crap out of me. One night i figured the same size we can and he wanted to go buy you a bad call. Seven different ways. It's not the one where he came out. After to make sure you still. Dave babich me babs came in whereas get my teeth looked at and he's like hey dommage wants to see if you're all right. I'm like what he goes. Yeah he thought he killed ya anyway. After he beat me like a drum we played together on in the world championships. I'm like oh my god. This guy is hilarious. He is an awesome teammate. And then he got traded to the islanders and we came mates again there too. We got one. God cat. What he he has got. Some stories played for keenan. Yeah you know what in its long. I believe it was his last year. We went to the stanley cup. Final with with anaheim played for al. Arbour he stuff. We'll have a lot of have a lot of a lot. He by the way heat unrig the window in my truck if we get him on the podcast a want him to pay for like Punched it holiday break it. No we were on a golf trip. And he was standing in like kind of off to the side. You know going to the bathroom. And i threw a little pebble off the back of his head and so as five was standing there. These pebbles just a little tiny things. He grabbed a handful and he drew me or they missed the hit the back window at shattered the window while while the van was in my name and he's like he's like oh and nobody'll notice everytime we backed up most of the window. A stuffy thomas. We've got a book that that is as green dregs. Anything is presented by kubat dot. Co chris. Abbott was named to join us this week but we'll reconnect next week. There's a lot to talk. Show with your two thousand twenty set to go out keenly interested in that. Italy is foregoing going in obviously right. Well france in england glazed. Fourth abbot portugal. Yeah man there. I love euro. It is so good so good. There's there's very few games like the world cup where teams get stretched out a little. These teams all kind of all of intermingled through their seasons. I i love you. I think it's really fun rob grain. I were talking about this. Just prior to recording on the podcast. Scotland is back after. What a twenty three year right you know sitting on the sidelines. Trying to get back in like i just. I've got a lot of scottish friends in thinking to myself. Can you imagine some of the parties and the activities. That are going on in scott on when the scots are the expectations are going to be somewhat limited. But anyway they adult be why on the. Oh yeah is. Mike commodore scottish. That would give him an excuse to be in line for like thirty days. Are i guess they wouldn't be there that long three games. Yeah we'll talk. Chris abbott in episode twenty seven about euro. Two twenty ask rain drugs brought to you. Cool bed dot. Co free to play sports casino games website. You must be nineteen and cool. That reminds you stay cool always bet responsibly. Race speaking of stain cool. Here's question one. Yeah what is your favorite ice cream flavor for nick. Okay getting stuff as a kid. Because of course we didn't have variety chocolate simple chocolate. I like some knots on it. Like nuts walnuts or what kind like walnuts almonds pecans anything i i just i like that. Now we've found this ice cream. It salted caramel soy in new. It's unbelievable come here. Yeah which i- nina it comes in a little pint. I will say. I've come across that late at night and i don't know if you find this who certain on but the salted caramel will have like a third left. And i get a tablespoon of peanut butter rule it in there and i mix it all up all at so. I'm eating out of the crate. But i don't wanna look like us. You know like just a glutton. So once i'm finished pretty much licking it out at the end. I crumpled up and put it in the bottom of the garbage so nobody really noticed. Is tonight the rest. I'm i'm down with the peanut butter idea i. I'm not a guy that goes to the butter jar. All that all breakfast or any of that. But i do love peanut butter which is strange and saying it that way. But i'll use peanut butter a marinade for chicken or anything like that. Like yeah you mix it with something. Really only see me amigo through peanut butter by the bucket. Here yeah love it. Our family just is like okay so relied say salted caramel and chocolate for me. I'd see i. I as i've gotten older i'd go. I don't. I'm not a big ice cream guy. But the neopolitan we've got the vanilla now in the chocolate strawberry. The one third of the strawberry in neapolitans there for three years. Nobody eats nobody. Eats it Yet but i feel it's a. It's a seniors ice cream because i think back to my days a little boy when you're you love ice cream and same as you always. Chocolate was number one vanilla only if you had chocolates sauce or caramel sauce. Something like that. Yeah but my grandparents would always have the neopolitan and it. It bugged me. But i got used to it but but now i don't buy it as much because i think of it as an old person ice cream. Well get used to my my uncle. Ten o'clock every night. You know i'd be down there. Look just down the street from us. I go visit. Or whatever do scoops across the top of the blocks of neopolitan and coffee at ten o'clock nice number ten o'clock and go the band like like i don't know how did it but the every night it's awesome. I would hockey question from jay. Rave you could've played on any dynasty era team which of the dynasty teams you choose this would be the haves of the nineteen fifties the toronto maple leafs of the sixties of montreal. Canadian's the seventies your islanders in the eighties or the irs of the nineteen eighties. While i don't know that the habit of the fifteenth dr one. So i don't really know them well up those other three. I think the team. I would fit based on would have been the islanders of the eighties. I think the oilers of the eighties would have gone too fast for me. And i'm not really sure what line would fit in. Their seventies have been interesting because i hated them. I was a bruins fan in the seventies kept punching the bruins in the nose. And i see that nineteen seventy-nine last couple of minutes gala. Flir scoring from jacques. Lemaire slapshot be jill. Jill bear on the ice and then he don lamb bear man. I've got bad memories of that in the seventies. My family was a mixed ocoee family. My mom french-canadian made named lies you so very french. My dad was a stubborn german so he loved the bruins mime born and raised. The hab fan saw some dark days that right being abreu span in the hab house was a tough one. That's the tough on from austin. Ray how'd you get into doing. Ea sports nhl commentary and how much the dialogue is scripted by ea. In how much is stuff that you just come up with on your own on the fly. I i was asked to do the. Ea stuff. i think mainly because the studios are in vancouver for the only time ever in broadcasting living on the west coast is a is an advantage. I think they thought will look. We can get him in here to the record and you know when we need more. It's easy i just drive. It's twenty minutes away dialogue being scripted. None zero what happens. Is i get a scenario. For an event it might be player shoots the puck from the wing in. There's a rebound. And then i have to come up with five or ten different things that are that that are shot down the wing save and a rebound but it can't be too specific because they've got to be able to use it in various places in the game i will say in the last year and a half. We've been building up the content because it all used to be the guy shoots the puck. He makes the save. The goal has to find his way through traffic and then he can make the save. It's now we're balancing out with more. They'll be a male variety and then a female variety a- and so because there's more female players playing four and it should be done and it should have been done but it is being done now. Yeah so none of it's scripted. It all comes like the scenarios presented. And then i've got to make it up and some it comes a lot easier than others and some days. I'm staring at the screen and go man. I come out every little. It's not their man. Great people to work with though they really. It's really amazing. What they do to put that game together. Yeah you bet you guys do agree job. At one point there was rumblings of a panel insertion relays. Yeah they don't tell me about that. I just basically right now. I gotta tell ya austin going to my closet. I've got a microphone setup in there. We got to work around the microphone. Set up on a boom mic. So you go into get your clothes and you got a not mark. Knock this mic around. And i mean there for five or six hours while according it's not exactly studios in narrow you. Thank you for that austin. I love those. Are the questions that ask do this. The BrindAmour Flex
"Just just getting foot rubs all weekend long online though drayton foot massages online elliott one of the things. We always talk about here on this. Podcast is not just looking after ourselves by looking after everybody around us And that's not just family. That's neighbors that's colleagues. That's everybody but watching headlines on saturday and hearing your report on rod brindamour. It feels like the coach of the carolina. Hurricanes is taking that to another level here for those who didn't watch headlines on saturday. Want to spell this one for us. So i spent a lot of last week trying to figure out what was going on with rod brindamour because nobody believes he's going to he wants to leave carolina. I know there's this rumor about. Could he be the first head coach of the seattle cracking. Is he interested in going anywhere else but nobody believes he really wants to leave. And depending on who you talk to. There's a belief also that he may be very close to a deal and may even have a verbal deal. I don't know it. It depends on who you talk to write a month or two ago. The several of us were reported. I think frank seravalli had a report about it Sarah sylvian had a report about it. I think dan rosen for h. L. dot com at a report about it. I'd heard it. That brindamour was getting close to having a deal done and for whatever reason it hasn't happened and now there are people saying that they're wondering if it's going to happen and i do think that there are teams out there looking at this and saying if we have the opportunity will back up the brinks truck four brindamour and give them more money than in carolina because the belief is if he stays there. He's going to take. Leslie can get on the market because he wants to be there but the issue is his staff and i'm not just talking. What is coaching staff. The assistant coaches the goaltending coach but also the training in the equipment staff. They don't have contracts for next year and apparently what brindamour has said. Is i want these people taking care of. And i won't sign until i know that they're taking care of and you know i don't know where this is going to go. I think there is a chance. he's still stays. Obviously like i said. I believe he wants to stay but i think right. Now he's taking a stand for the rest of his staff because he feels that they should be taken care of too. And if you know anything about brindamour. I don't think this would come as a huge surprise. No he's always been. That guy might my question. When i saw your report on. Saturday was what happens within the organization when the negotiation between a rod brind'amour's and the squad reaches that point Is one thing to get the coach. Done it's one thing to get his immediate assistance done. And isn't it a whole other thing to take care of eric. First of all good on rod brindamour. I wanna make that up front like first and foremost here. Good on brindamour because in this time and like we all know as you pointed. rod brind'amour's has options like rodman. Newer hits the market. He's unemployed for as long as he wants to be. I get that i will tell you. I got a text today from someone who said i really hope that the hurricanes saw that go public and they sign everyone. Because i think there's some coaches nervous about what that could mean for them. Sure because all of a sudden there's a shark in the water like all of a sudden rod brind'amour's becomes available teams. That already have coaches and might be on the fence with like him or not all of a sudden that could sway. So i i understand all that. I do wonder though if you're the general manager if you're done with del How do you receive that information. If you're tom dondon how do you receive that information. Well i think they already knew. I don't believe that don l. And two or and or tom dunton would be surprised that that is the case. I think it's well known inside the organization that that's the issue you know what they probably don't like is that it's public. We'll see where that goes will see if that changes anything. I don't know that it will. But i'm sure that that's something that they would rather have been internal for example. I sent a note to the hurricane saying that. This is what. I was hearing. 'cause i legitimately did make a whole bunch of calls last week wondering why isn't this done is going on here and finally someone helped me on earth. The answer the thing that is interesting to me about all of this is the carolina hurricanes are doing a lot of things right there in first place in. Nhl they've done a really good job finding and developing players. They've taken some gambles on some players that have really worked out. Well and brindamour is at the heart of that. She sets the tone for the day in day out team operations of the players and clearly those guys like playing for him So what. I'm wondering is and they know him better than anybody else. Why would you fool around with that. Why would you screw around with that. If you're the carolina hurricanes why would you screw around with Yeah why tempt fate. Listen right now. For the carolina hurricanes. Things are going great. They are the top team in a division that has tampa bay lightning and a resurgent florida panthers in it they are the talk and now they have been for a couple of seasons now of the nhl although they play in a very quiet market. Let's just say i mean. This isn't new york philadelphia toronto montreal vancouver etcetera like right now. Everything is coming up. Carolina the carolina hurricanes when the stanley cup. This year. you surprised no who would be surprised. No no one would. They're really good in a situation. Like this and i think there's a few reasons for this. I think very quiet and we've talked about it before. I think this is as much as you have to give credit to donald. Woodall for what he's been able to do. They've got some secret weapons in that organization and namely eric. Tulsky is one of them. I think eric tulsky is one of the smarter people around the nhl and has been for a long time. A lotta those moves. Go right through tulsky and a lot of communication to the coaches Go through eric tulsky. So they've got like some secret weapons that don't get talked about a lot in the nhl On their staff. But i'm with you like if it ain't broke. Don't fix it. Not only is it not broke. Its corn great read. Now there's a chance to be good for a long time for a long time. Absolutely and they have a whole david cross a lot of players to do a lot of different things. So give some context here as far as salary for rod brindamour like. I don't know whether dunton would be scared away from a number. Like are we talking about the joel quenneville. Aline vinicio clo- julianne club if he stays in carolina he's going to be way under market in k. And dundas a guy who's made it very clear he's a smart guy. I disagree with him on some things. But i agree with him on others. One of the things that he has made it very clear is that he thinks executive coaches salaries in the nhl are way too high and he wants to change that and the thing is if brindamour comes in where i've heard he could potentially be coming in it's steel. It's still a lot of money like nobody's going to be holding any tagged as for rod brindamour but it's a steel so if you're saving that much money under market for brindamour. Why are you drawing such a hard line on all the people he wants around with him somebody out there can explain it to me. I'm just looking at it from my point of view and brind'amour's clearly going with the don't bleep with happy rule right. Yeah and i respect that especially now. I think there's a whole world of people who are going through that right now if brind'amour's going on the don't bleep with happy rule and taking below his market to stay. Why are you drawing a hard line with the people around him. Why tempt fate right. That he gets upset and says forget it okay so the best type of leverage you can have any negotiation. You know this as i do and anyone else. Listening to this podcast. The best leverage you can have an negotiation is if you have the ability to walk away and brind'amour's does because he has options. So let's say it doesn't get that far. Let's say a that bridge maura gets Gets redone here by the carolina hurricanes. He gets re upped and get everybody around him done at the same time as well. What happens to his stroke in the organization that feels like a real power move. Doesn't it i think brind'amour's always kind of been like that. I remember in two thousand six. We went to. Carolina was working at hockey night in canada. The time at cbc. And i was doing. The headliner was still at the time. I can't remember. we're still calling at. The headliner would switched to inside hockey nor remember which name the piece was and carolina had a great year that year. You know of course. They won the stanley cup and we went down there to do a piece on brindamour and he was finally getting the respect that he deserved right and i do remember asking him like a boat. You know the way his play was getting recognized and he looked at me and he said i've never changed a thing you know. The the fact is a lot of. You're just noticing and it wasn't exactly that. But i'm paraphrasing it. I remember it. I remember him looking at me and saying that. And that's who he is like. You know if you ask him a question. You're getting an honest answer. He's going to tell you what he thinks. And he's telling the carolina hurricanes what he thinks. Take care of my staff. One final thing on the carolina hurricanes. We'll get to the rest of the podcast here in a second. How much influence do you think justin williams has on. This team are quite a bit. I think they listened to his opinion quite a bit. The only reason i ask that is williams. Played for rod brindamour If there's one person that could exert some influence based on having played for this coach would it not be justin williams. Maybe it's possible. I think he's definitely influenced. Dandan was some ideas before the dondon is a really interesting guy. he's successful. obviously he's opinionated. Obviously he's driven. Obviously you one thing. I learned is that for a lot of people who don't play sports for a living but there around sports. What's their game. Their game is winning the negotiation right. Jeff yes that is competition. How many people have you met in this business that the negotiation or the argument is their game. Oh how long do you have. So it's this it's at every single. Level elliott one hundred percent. So this is this. Is tom dungeons game. It's winning the negotiation. He's like a lot of very successful people i know. Why are they successful. Because they're determined to win every inch of the negotiation right well like. I said i think right here. Tom dunn has win. He can get rod brind'amour's one of the best coaches in the national hockey league signed for well under the market value. He's one that negotiation. Why isn't it signed. Because i believe rod brind'amour's said okay. You've got me dying now. Take care of all these other people. If you're tom dondon. What are you winning by blowing this like. Did you say the absolute worst case scenario happens and brind'amour's says i won't tolerate this. I'm done at the end of this year. I'm either retiring to golf in carolina or going somewhere else What have you one here. If you're the hurricanes you haven't you have a new coach that comes in at a price that the owner wants. Yeah because i think he's already won. You know what though. Good rod brind'amour's here stick up for your principles. Not everybody can afford to stick up for your principles stick up for people leverage the position that you have to help others around and on that will Kick off the podcast. Welcome to thirty thoughts. The podcast presented by the gmc sierra eighteen hundred okay. Welcome once again. To thirty the podcast. Thanks so much for For listening thank you for the download and thank you for the kind words about episode number two hundred Welcome to episode two hundred and one Elliott now there are officially. The final payment was made late last week. Thirty two teams in the nhl. Welcome a seattle cracking. I have one big question about seattle. Hold off here for a couple of seconds But as we greeted this news late last week what went through your mind right away. You know what. The first thing i thought of is that who's going to be the first cracking. Who's gonna be the redo ke- yes. Because as i had thought about who's going to be the real duke of the crack in the first player. They sign yes. Y'all ultimate trivia. Question was redo. Could the the brandon wheat kings signed by the vegas golden knights. Who's going to be that guy for seattle so vegas saturday. Kelly criminal association went his junior team brandon to grab the first one what happens with seattle thunderbirds of evered silver tips. That's actually not a bad idea. That's a really good idea. jeff. I give you credit. That is a great. I don't know if there's an undrafted. Free agent from seattle everett that they could sign. Yeah i like the way you think. That's a guaranteed. I'm just watching a highlight right now and one of my favorite baseball players. Andrew mccutchen just hit a four hundred and forty four foot. Home run for the phillies. That is a four hundred and forty four foot home run for the cracking if they signed one of the silver tips are one of the thunderbirds. That's that's a four. Seventy george springer baby. I'll go four seventy all day long. Bab bombed that he has the extra twenty six feet really need that. Yeah i'm i'm that petty elliott. I am am that petty. So that's one thing i thought about. You know i thought boat the expansion draft. I love the vegas expansion draft. It was such a fun event. I don't think there's going to be much of a chance this year. I'm going to be able to get to go to seattle But i'd love to be there. I'd love to go to the seattle expansion draft. I loved it. It sounds like it's going to be in multiple locations right with various celebrities and likely yes it it. It sounds like listen no surprise. I think the one thing that we've we've were all expecting out of seattle is there's gonna be a real element of showmanship about this like there's gonna be no no such thing as a low key presentation for anything especially not something as substantial as the expansion draft but the the one thing that i that i wonder about and a half for a long time here and again all this is going to be sort of lurking out from under the shadows of what happened with the vegas golden knights. And what they were able to do with their expansion draft and the team they put together and what they did. In that first season talk about raising and impossibly high bar For the seattle crack in here to me. The question is this. If you're ron francis do you want a good team for twenty one twenty two or do you want a good team for twenty five twenty six. I think this question is now irrelevant. Wise that because. I think he's going to be able to do lots of different things here. You think you'll be able to do both yes. The pandemic has changed everything for a lot of us. it's particularly change things for seattle. There were a lot of gm's in this league in organizations in this league. Who talked tough about how we're not gonna make the same mistakes was seattle that we did with vegas. They will look what's happened. They all they all wanna make deals before. I think it was legitimate. At one point in time i thought it was legitimate. That seattle was going to get squeezed here a little bit more that you know the the they had opportunities to avoid mistakes now because the cap is flat were in a different spot. There's going to be the opportunity to do some things. We'll one of the things. I'm very curious about is gonna to do. Is they have to draft a minimum salary right. Yes so will they target the minimum and that leaves them a ton of caporal to do whatever they want with whether it's free agents or extort trade or whatever they wanna do see i wonder about them playing with that cap space and saying here's a chance for us to pick up picks and prospects and help a lot of teams out of some really uncomfortable situations. That's why ask a question like. Do you want to be good in twenty two or you want to be good in twenty six. That's why i think this gives you the opportunity to do both. They're gonna get players and they have. The opportunity takes some really bad contracts here for a couple of years and essentially by first rounders and by prospects forgetting teams out of pickles. Giving them a salary cap jams or getting the owners out under the weight of deals That they that they now regret by the way. The draft is structured this year But by the way all expansion drafts are done. All every other expansion draft will be done this way the same time to when you're paying as much money as vegas in seattle did like you're going to get players. I like that is going to happen. Like i don't think that anyone's gonna or should expect seattle to replicate what vegas it because that was just a just a freak but they'll be a competitive team. My only question is. How much does does ron francis wanna say. You know what it would be nice to be competitive this season but if we can pick something up. It's going to help us down the road like we're in we're in this for the long play. Not just not just a short pop. I think the pandemic and what. It's done tanny. Shell economics they're gonna be able to do both They're gonna be able to do both so you think there's going to be a lot of side deals here. Yes so you think is going to be lot of bribes. Essentially elliott is. What you're saying there will be a lot of bribery just like a chicago election. There will be a lot of you know like one of the teams. I'm wandering is philly. Yes while you wonder. If players like james van dyke or jacob check if there are deals. They're not unlike what we saw with. Pittsburgh in vegas with marc andre fleury phillies gonna be one of the biggest teams to watch this offseason. All they've been doing since before the trade deadline i think is is sitting there and saying what are we gonna do here I think philly's going to be a fascinating watch. Let's get to philly. Because that's one of the teams that i wanted to discuss sort of under the umbrella of teams. Your surprise that you know here. We are six or seven games five or six games remaining in the season and these teams are out. They talk about the racist here and a couple of moments because really there aren't any outside of dallas in nashville there's racist for positioning but not so much to get in. But far as teams that are on the outside of all of this and maybe dallas is going to end up being that answer from stanley cup. Finalists out of the play offs but top of the charts from has got to be philadelphia. Flyers and i know we spend a lot of time on them a few episodes ago but pick up on the conversation. We just had or the point you were just trying to make their about what philly is poised to do here. First of all let me say on dallas. I don't know if anyone's ever exempt from criticism but they'd be as close as anyone. I could get to because of covid and injuries and they had the situation in texas with the power grid went down and they couldn't play for week because of that to some of them. Were housing co workers and teammates because there was flooding in their places. I used to have a house that had some trouble with flooding. It's a nightmare. It's an absolute nightmare. Like to me. The stars i know it'll be disappointing if they don't make the playoffs. I know the overtime win by nashville. Heavily told the odds stretching out of the blue line. Here's echo down the left wing. Echo goes behind the net figure predator. Want to drive from that. Call me gets behind the net. What's it out in front. And how pumps it in. That was ten scheme. So i mean. Obviously i'm watching toronto vancouver and i'm watching montreal ottawa but had that nashville dallas game on and it was tense. Yup zero zero in overtime. You probably want a little bit more to happen. But it was a tense game and the odds are now really tilted nationals favor between the schedule and that win but deal to me like i said as close as you can get to be exempt from criticism this year. The dallas stars are on that list for me. That's fair and they haven't had sagan for the entire season and in end end bishop bishops and other one Do we not under recognize the importance of matinee skin and on this team spirit because that blue line looks and looked completely different. This season without matinee skin. Defensively the foot off the one area where you look at and you say. What's the problem with philly this year defensively. They had a real hard time. They were bad. they're just flat out bad. Yeah hard had a rough year. He won't play. The defense was terrible in front of them. I think chuck fletcher has some real. Like i said. I think he's going to be really interesting to watch in the off season i do. I think it's gonna be fascinating what they decide to do like this year. If you're losing has been total hell and these guys. They can't do anything and we joked last week about how guys are texting me and saying were just sick of each other and we hate each other. I think philly's one of those teams. It's going through that. So i think top to bottom the way they play their roster their coaching staff like everything is on the table. Everything after a year like this. Nobody avoids the microscope. And i think they've been planning it for time like it's not like they're going to play they're asking whenever it is next week in there and say okay. Let's sit down. I think the flyers have been doing it for some time. Now like i'll tell you there's like there was a room or it was crazy. Rumor going around last week the day were supposed to have a day off one day. The day off was cancelled and switched for another day and then the players. Like we're like no we were given this day off will. Just keep the schedule away. It is it was so weird. It's just a crazy situation where i think. The level of frustration among everybody in that organization is just off the charts so the first order of business that is to get yourself right for the The expansion draft and all the deals that are gonna come along with it but after that is done of course is on the nhl draft in late july but is not the main job this season for the philadelphia flyers to get carter heart healthy and performing again. Because without that guy you know are you. You know just winding. You're winding your watch on the way to the electric chair. I think teams have to be really careful about this year. This is such an unusual year. You know philly had a covert outbreak right. After that they had to go right across the country and they lost to boston in that outdoor game they got killed by the bruins in their season just nosedive from their right to me because carter hearts had a really rough year and he has had a rough year. It doesn't mean that you're sitting there and saying okay. This guy is no good now. I agree with you. I think you analyze it. And you annual analyze it pretty strenuously. But i would bet on him recovering. Wouldn't you absolutely. Yes based on his history based on his track record based on what we've seen professionally from them. I would say at -solutely but that's what has to be job number one like he's a guy that needs to get. Tlc in the offseason rate like he needs to get the full attention. Because that's it without carter heart. It doesn't matter what you're doing doesn't matter what you do to find a partner for ivan provorov doesn't matter what you doing for the expansion draft as a matter who your doesn't matter if you don't have that goalie everything's mean it's the story of philadelphia. Everything gets undone because of the goaltending. Now nothing impending everything on carter heart. 'cause defense had a really tough go of it this year to do. I think you mentioned you. Know the the thing. And that's something they're gonna target. They are absolutely gonna target. How do we fix that okay. So you mentioned that. Nashville dallas game on saturday. And you're right. That was tense. That was edge of your seat and you only had the payoff in overtime. But if you look at the races around the league. Yup i think going into the season when we said okay look at the schedule and has only inter division so this is going to go right down to the wires going to come down to the last handful of games. I mean nashville. Dallas is the only playoff spot. That's up for grabs here. That's the that we're having any conversation about you know like many as two points back of colorado for second in the west Tampa in florida are two points. Back of carolina for first in the central and east is a logjam united pittsburgh and washington and the islanders all within four points. And you have boston to points within the islanders the way by the way you guys cannot allow a hey burkey. This year of brian. Burke saved the penguins. That will not happen. Brian doesn't want it to happen. Brian goes out of his way to mention. Like if anyone anyone if anyone from my team said that. Brian burke and ron hextall. They're taking credit for this. They'd be livid he wants to say. Hey burkey tell us about how you. And ron hextall. Save the They've only got four games. Left their tops. The division right now. That episode is not gonna come out. I assure you hey burkey how tell us how you came into pittsburgh with a big red s. on your chest this year. How you win to that phone booth and tore off your white shirt and there was a big s. on your on your dry fit underneath. That red tie always wear turned into eighth so there really aren't any races here. Other than just jockeying for position and for my money while the you forgot the existing one in the north and that is all of a sudden montreal. Montreal wonderful beg yes. Wall said admit the winnipeg jets have lost six games in a row. Yeah bom and we've seen benching. 's we've seen irate players whether it's you know mark safely whether it's connor hella book. I don't have a problem with any of that. I don't have a problem with any of it either. I'm fine tonight. I expect star players to be upset when they're sat down or taken out of play. I'm totally fine with it but all of a sudden any maple leaf phanor montreal canadian fan. That was getting excited about this. Opening round matchup. Oh finally gonna see the maple leafs montreal canadian's well guess again. It might beliefs winnipeg in the opening round and edmonton montreal as well. There were two big goal celebrations on saturday night. You know caufield scoring been on. The ice exa started this overtime. He has not been able to get off to and hall of scoring. Those were the way those two team celebrated you would have thought they would've won the cup or pretty close to it. I mean i'm exaggerating. When i say the cop but you would have thought. Maybe they would've won a playoff round just the stress relief of those two victories. Even though winnipeg's really struggling. I still wonder of montreal has enough to pass them. Although the canadians they had an unbelievable weekend like just everything they were going through. They had an incredible weekend to fall behind. Winnipeg like they did and win to fall behind ottawa. They didn't win and auto has been a lot better. I don't know if i would have believed that for a large chunks in the past couple of weeks they had that in them. And i still think with all the injuries they have. It's going to be a challenge. But i'm astonished at how winnipeg has has opened up the door. They're lemme nitpick again okay. Let me get on my soapbox again. First of all. Congratulations a call. Caufield greg goal great celebration getting there. How many times can you watch. So neutral zone regroups. The overtimes are getting. they're getting awful. I just be blunt. They're getting terrible. Yeah like all it is. Nobody wants to change possession. Every wants to catch everyone on a line change or catch them on a an at wor On a switch and it worked. It just took a while to get there. Don't have it open neutrals on regroup here. We go back and it's slow. When three on three started it was it was worse things worked know and then then coffey people are gonna do like watching this. Oh my god this is so awful. And then whoa. I like jumping out of my chair okay. Well that was great. And i work but just i don't know man that's that doesn't seem like the spirit of three hundred overtime to me. Like i remember that first season there with the first season with three on three there was one detroit ottawa overtime which was just five glorious minutes of odd man rushes and scoring chances and up and down and edged that. Tell the pot for a minute. No no no. This was can't remember. Exactly i i actually. I would like to go back. And fight was in the first season of three on three and it was late in the season and it was to me the best three on three. I've ever seen the triton ottawa. It was spectacular and then to watch on saturday and again great. Finish call caufield awesome. That was fantastic. But man slow neutral zone regroups over and over again and in. Ottawa grabs the puck and does the same thing. Like oh man. I don't know if this is what the nhl was Was shooting for. Can i tell you one thing and winnipeg. I am really curious about what's that so at the trade deadline we've talked about this. That winnipeg tried to get another defenseman. In addition to what they did with ban and shoveled off was very very upset about it that he could tell. He was noticeably upset. That he couldn't get another de when he wanted. Jamie alexia yes. We've talked about that that he was the guy well around the same time. He said that he wanted to see villi heinola. How many times has played since that game. I don't know how many times he played once. We'll see. I think one of the more interesting things about way. Hockey is still different. From a lot of sports never met a lot of other sports. I would say baseball in particular in baseball. The manager and a lot of places. The power has been taken out of their hands. The organization sets the roster and comes up with a lot of the in game strategy. Okay now it's a much slower game than hockey is so i think there's you know in hockey. You can't make those decisions that slowly. You need a coach. Who's on the ball and saying okay. I'm ready to do this. You don't have the time frame you do in baseball. But i think there's a lot of coaches in hockey who still a lot of teams look at it like we set the roster of the overall team but the coach decides who plays and who gives out the is time now i think some teams molded a bit better than others. But i still think there's a church and state separation in most cases this one with heinola knowle's interesting to me. Because i played once since shoveled off said that i do believe that winnipeg is one of those teams. That's like we may put up the overall roster decide who's on their from one to twenty three or whatever but paul maurice picks the lineup like i just think that they would like to see this guy and they're gonna make the playoffs calgary's ten points back of them with six games to go but i wonder if internally the jets are just like we have to see if this guy can play now we have to see it speaking of players wanna see. I wanna talk about clinton by field. So clinton by field made his debut last week in the nhl. Yeah so great story. Second overall draft pick like honesty elliott. I remember watching a york. Simcoe express the oil. Ha before he joined sudbury wolves of the oh l. And he me physically. He's just bigger than everybody but the skill set skating like all of it like he looked like the first kathrada was he looked combination. Needle often is a combination of joe thornton when he played with the same greyhounds. And you guinea malkin. Like that's what he looked like. It was freakish and the obvious. So look at them go. Oh that's a new. Eric lindros eric lindros but anyways was second overall pick and i look back first of all great story and congratulations to the player I look back at the conversation that we had. I think it was on the last podcast. I know they kind of all run together here or one of our podcast where we talked about the nhl c. h. l. deal and how player like field this season if the oh l. Were playing the decision would have been. He's either on the nhl roster or he's on the oh l. roster. And i see a situation where you know by feel the kings would have kept them around at a camp played up until the magic number. Where all of a sudden you know. You're burning the first year of the contract and they make a decision and maybe send a back to the oh l. Who knows maybe goes back there but this year being a year were the. Oh l. wasn't playing. He stays in the american hockey league. And it seems as if that was the best scenario for him like that worked him having that transition between the. Oh l. and let's face it he goes back to the sudbury wolves of the. He has nothing to prove. He's like there's not a whole lot of growth. That's going to happen for play quinn by field going back to dominate junior one more season versus playing a however many games he played with the With the ontario reign of the american hog league that worked for him. Now we talked about this on a previous podcast but how this deal is going to get looked at in a different way and another player that comes to mind and this might be an even better example and even better example of how teams are looking at this arrangement between the nhl the h. l. And saying we need to rethink this and how they're going to do it. Maybe they don't even know how they're going to do it. But it needs a get discussed again in probably will and this example is jamie drysdale to jimmy. Drysdale was probably a player who out of training camp would have probably right away been sent back to irie and wouldn't had a chance To play in the american hockey league would have been just like okay. Kids not ready sedna back. But not only was he allowed to stay in the american league because the show wasn't playing but all of sudden he started developing in leaps and bounds in the nhl. Now he's not going back. And elliot he's one of anaheim's best defenceman and that doesn't happen if the oh l. isn't inaction this year I think there's a there's a few players that are like this but the one big one that that pops when you look at okay. Which player would have been sent back right away. At a training camp and not even been given the obligatory nine games to me is probably jamie drysdale. Like i think you're banging on about this at this agreement is going to get looked at again. I don't know how they do it. One player every two years. Can you know commend right from that. Right from the draft and not have to go back to. I don't know all i know is there's enough examples now and this year has shown like this year is proven because the oh l. being dark this year's proven that these players can handle it and there's a lot of them. What do you think. I don't disagree with anything you just said there. I think the thing that saves it is that when push came to shove. I think it was last year and they could've voted on this. There were a lot of teams that said this is still our number one feeder league and we can't ruin it So does it become. Say like the max domi question. If you're hindering into your fourth year of junior can you go play age l. Is there a compromise that can be reached or a team can only do it three years out of five. That's another idea or once every two years or however you wanna do it. Is there that compromiser now. The junior hockey operators will look at that and say hold on a second here if you want to see a shell and for the purposes of this conversation specifically the oh l. to be this you know developmental hothouse here. You need to keep as many high end athletes in the league as possible because there were players Light quinn by field in the league when quinton by field joined the league so this would be an example of climbing up to the top of the roof. An-and kicking down the ladder. And saying i'm here. Screw everybody else now. I fall more on the side of if the player can play in the american hockey league. You probably should go. But i know junior hockey operators look at it and say hold on a second here if you want this as a top developmental league you better keep some elite level players here but the winds are very much moving towards the state. Changing right It's going to happen. I would imagine in some something happens to. Do you ever thought on quitting my field. Instead of this whole diatribe by bringing up clinton by field in transition jimmy drysdale but thought on by field. I'm just really happy for him. Getting the opportunity. It will wet the appetite. I wish you would have scored. He had a glorious chance in that first game but he got the opportunity. And i think in the long run. It's only gonna make him better. I'm really interested in this kings teams. They've got a lot of young players. And i wonder how much a they are friendly with each other and how much they look around and say how many of are going to make it because you can be friendly but you also have to compete like hell. You're competing for the spots. Do you say the same thing about the anaheim ducks. Because that's another team loaded with young players. I said earlier that phillies one of the teams. I'm really wondering about anaheim. Is another the fact that bob murray said such a high bar for some of his best players makes me wonder if he is looking to try to hit some kind of home homerun this off season and not commit to a full rebuild but try to get right back into it because all three california out like anaheim was in online. Right oh yeah. Could you not see them. Taking a run at someone like eichel vehicles. Available hundred percent ikea. I just wonder about that. Like if somebody like that is available. They could do it. They have the prospects. There is no denying that. I've been thinking about anaheim since the deadline. He set a high price said a high price instead of high price. What is he thinking now again. Don't while we can't say radio me. Please don't podcast me everyone. This is just me wondering not saying it's going to happen. Like i started the podcast by saying i was making calls last week because i was wondering what was going on. Why isn't this happening with brindamour. I'm ending the pod by wondering. Why didn't that happen anaheim. And that's one of my theories. Brindamour was fact. This is conjecture. You're not any of the podcast that way. You're going to end the podcast by doing two things here. Okay one what are your thoughts and ilya kovalchuk now. Avangard wins up. And he's a free agent and sergei kinski great import story into the. Oh l. there. He wins the game winning goal but he resigned. Yeah no. I just throw that in there. Because it's a fascinating story has import draft story but when he terminated his deal i immediately asked. Is there any chances coming back this year and he wasn't on anyone's reserve list yep so he can't play in the playoffs or anything like that so i was initially told no and then you know someone said to me. There might be someone who's looking into at least getting his rights. So we'll see where it goes a couple of things here to close out One thing you mentioned on headlines women's world hockey championships are rescheduled august twentieth. To thirty first the ironic. Really good interview with rene gazelle absolutely and i thought that was excellent and one of the things that i was one of the things i mean i'd been whispered about august going back a few months. Like hey worst case scenario the aa cheifs gonna do this thing in august and it's worse case situation right now so there. It is an august. I wondered about edmonson and wondered about red deer as well as potentials for the obvious reason. And you mentioned calgary calgary definitely making a big push for it You'll edmonds had a lot and good on them. I think calgary's really making a push for this one. Okay and one final thing. First of all you know how much i love talking about. Peter forsberg yes and you know how much i loved when peter forsberg came on this podcast. Yes he sure. You guessed by now. That i'm a huge peter forsberg fan. Yes when you think of peter forsberg's signature move. What do you think of. Not the one that you think of. Because i liked the reverse hit. That's the one. Oh i thought you were going to talk about the goal one. That ranch gordon the the interesting thing about forsberg to me is the one thing that to me defines. Peter forsberg. isn't the postage stamp goal Right and that was actually created by enforce berg talked about this on this podcast kent nielsen or the world championship scoring against john vanbiesbrouck. And these eight while he was being chased wasn't on a penalty shot or a shootout or anything like that. Jacob brandon do that. That's a touchtone for this conversation on saturday against mackel that sukey horrendous done it again a beautiful goal little bicycle. Kick move peter. Berg made me to me. The peter forsberg the signature moves that colby armstrong always calls it the cold shoulder the peter for the back right there reverse hit or whatever is being able to initiate contact while you have the puck to me when ernie when anyone says the forsberg generally they mean that postage-stamp goal that he scored against corey hirsch. Yup but to me. It's a cold shoulder isn't a and i guess it. When you look at forsberg popularized the move that can't nielsen. Essentially created right much. Gordie howe popular is the gordie howe hat trick which was first on by harry cameron in nineteen seventeen that always be popular and as a gordie howe only had himself to gordie howe hat tricks. Yes yes i knew that. But the way he played it became synonymous with that moment. Because gordy was tough. No denying that gordon could score gordy could set up gordy was ambidextrous rate like before on corn wade. There was gordy howe shooting left and shoot rate. But i don't know this is essentially just a a way for me elliott to bring up peter forsberg again here on this. Podcast is because he's one of my favorite players of all time we rambled on for an extra two minutes in ways to everybody's time because he wanted to talk some more about peter forsberg. I think i brought some information and mention can't nelson. I sort of dovetail that. The harry cameron in nineteen seventeen and gave a little bit of context here. And i've got no problem with talking about peer forsberg. None i could do it all day. Long all right And there we go listen thanks To everyone for For tuning into the podcast this week once again. Another podcast coming up a little bit later on This week as per usual taking us out A ban we featured a couple of seasons ago. Bs is back with another track from their upcoming double album. That's due out at the end of the month from iceland. Here's bsi with fester buyer beach thirty thoughts. The five am bad. Gumming does three a
Coming Next Season: The 32 Thoughts Arm Wrestling Challenge
"Nine eight seven six five four three two one. I hear him grades ol-oleree Coming out in three two and one very the way. I look at it here at twelve minutes past eleven eastern on thursday evening. There's only one thing better than a car. Cast with one person driving. And that's a car cast with two people. Dr not only is elliott friedman on his way home from hockey night in canada. But so is our man david amber. Who's making the drive back to his palatial estate after a night of broadcasting or gonna set up. Why david is with us here in a moment but first off david. Welcome once again to the podcast. How are you on this fine evening. I'm good except elliott's tailgating me and it's really worrying me back off. Yeah i know he's a he's a amongst other things that he's very poor at driving his is right around top of that list as well. I am aggressive. I will not lie aggressive driver. He likes the pedal on the rights. Okay elliott tell us why david is joining us today. I love this story. So we're not gonna spend too much time talking about what happened jeff patriot. That's been done to death but while this was happening the other night in game two girls vegas amber says this has happened to me before in an arm wrestling and i stopped right there. I said i do not want to hear the rest of this story right now. And i'm telling you if this game goes to overtime you're telling this on air in between third period and first overtime and if it doesn't going to overtime you're coming on the podcast to explain this story. So dave how did you burst the blood vessels in your eyes. Are i wanna hear this story right now. All right well. First of all me on omo elliott's nice to be here and it's funny because we don jeff patriot i went. Oh my god what the heck happened and we were figuring it out and club club its report and then i said you know that's actually happening and i thought back when i was at university Back mcgill university and this is many years probably nineteen ninety one or nineteen. Ninety-two is actually probably was. I was with a bunch of bodies. And what we're doing. What dis do women do at university were drinking beers. We're hanging out and next thing you know. There was a big arm wrestling contest between like ten guys right and one other guy's a good buddy of mine. His name's jerry. I fully played on the mcgill football team. He was running back at a cup of coffee with the toronto argos. This guy's a super strong guy. And i said i'm gonna beat you in an arm. He kind of looked at me and kind of laughed and next thing. I know i said let's do it. And we locked arms. It was almost like a movie. Was stallone over the top. It was like that right. You guys are going toe to toe. And just the typical try and be the bravado of university is trying to be strong and tough and all the rest and we got into one of those ethic like minute and a half. No one's moving and inch either way back and forth back and forth. But nothing's happening. I was a clenching my face so tight that i didn't realize it at the time but i popped the blood vessel. I guess in my left eye and it was pretty funny. 'cause we were heading out after this right and i'm going to the bar and i got like this bloodshot. It happened right away. I opened my. I couldn't i could see out of it. It wasn't painful but it looked like i've been punched in the eye or whatever the case had been and it was an epic battle and we laughed and laughed and laughed and we went out to To gertz which was the miguel tub time and we had a good night. Needless to say. I don't think i i was you know it didn't go so well. The bar for st. For but i didn't i've been in both is though just happened in one eye and i remember you know watching patriots like oh my god that actually has happened before so i can see how that could happen now as someone who's never popped a blood vessel in his eyes. Does it feel like anything. Do even when it's happening already. Just look in the mirror and go. Whoa sums up here. I don't know anything happen. And it ended and it's funny we ended up having to arm wrestles and he beat me right arm. I beat him left arm. So i was fifty fifty thanks. I felt pretty good about that. I it ended guys like dude. What happened your face. Those moments before the social media before the internet really so it wasn't one of those things where people were filming it pretty now and tiktok got. When did the bathroom looked in the mirror and said oh my god you know. And he just laughed. Because i don't think i think he was exerting himself to about twenty percent and i was exerting myself to one hundred and twenty percent i was difference the real quick follow even though this. This is pre social media. Do you have any photograph of this somewhere anywhere. I wish i did. The likelihood of died is pretty low. I've never even owned a camera in my life. That's the funny thing except on my phone. Now i. I do have some pictures from europe back at school but i don't think i have a specific picture from that night. I was kind of our every thursday night friday. Not the arm wrestling. But you know you have some beers hanging out and and end up going out. So i find one. I will definitely get it to you guys. But i mean one yet i just remember my. I was completely bloodshot. It lasted about two days. Though and. I'm not sure with petri. I think his might be a whole nother situation. But yeah it is pretty scary and it is pretty ghoulish and you know for at least a couple of days. I looked like a tough guy so there was lot first of all. This story is unbelievable. And i really appreciate you. Coming on the podcast. Tell the story. Dave but secondly i remember cherry iphone. Now people understand. This is not an insignificant that david picked an arm wrestling contest without. I can't look it up. Because we're driving and i got enough trouble from people complaining. They were pumping gas while on doing the car. As last week google while driving. But if i remember correctly versus jerry i feel did play a year in the cfl with the argos at vira correctly mcgill won the venue cop like in the late eighties and he had three touchdowns in the championship game. So i i have to give you. Credit did not pick a fight with someone who was beneath your physical power you pick on a legit opponent here known. I was swinging way above my way class. There i mean this guy. He's built like an absolute rock and great guys. Super smart guy lives out in asia. Now and your memories fantastic. He played the beginning scored three touchdowns in albania. Cup-winning back in one thousand nine hundred seven and this way he beat me one blood vessel to none so he probably got a very good chuckle. That you know. Wow look what. I did this guy even though he wanted. Ibm went on but he had the last laugh for sure and he was a great actually yet without a nice the nfl career but he broke his leg in. Preseason game was a team with dim ball clemens etc. I want to go to down deep down because there's hockey podcast. Obviously but he He had a big career. Ended up. you know in finance. And he's done incredibly well out in asia so Yeah kind of a blast from the positive funny story and something we can relate to what how or look of jeffey. I've been there before. Okay so this is my last question. If you were to arm wrestle the exa who would win. Let me train for six months then. I might have a shot. He's young. he's a pro athlete. I'm a civilian. It might be close. But i need. I need a few months You know we gotta get the gyms back open year. And i can start getting a little bit prepared for that next with promise. We are it because it's going to be thirty. Two thoughts when seattle comes in. We are doing next year. The thirty two thoughts arm wrestling challenge kevin versus david. Amber were doing this. We're going to find a sponsor or doing this. There's going to be money for charity on the table. And i don't even think it's going to be about who puts each other's arms down i. It's about who pops the other guys blood vessels in there. I don't care who wins. I just wanna see is pop. That's it would you like jimmy. Sure dave needs a couple of squash matches first before he gets two main event. You know these every saturday for how many months they feed tomato cans to mike. Tyson name unpredictable. Johnny rods and w. Yes just a couple of joggers like us. We'll make don't worry day. We'll make you feel like a champ will make you feel like this is great before we let you go. It was a playoff at first of all you as wide a great question the other you ask them to give a stanley cup. Picking basically pick cole coffee to win the stanley cup by himself. But give us a quick stanley cup. Playoff thought tonight tampa. They really aren't amazing machine because they can really be to. Any which way and i think you hit on the head and in the post game if we did for sports net central with danielle and face where where you just call it a offensive clinic you look at the possession that new york had in the final four minutes and it's very impressive. I mean the coursey numbers and all the rest will look nice but look at how many saves celeski had to make in the final four minutes. I believe the numbers zero the shock with a twenty eight and finished it twenty eight. I just find a way. Kevin pointed out. We all talk about the prowess of in point and kucherov. You know they have all these guys who can play a great two way game. We all know jefferson singing. The praises of anthony morelli for two years now three years now and they just have a bunch of guys who have grind out wins and there really is a difference between a team that had been there and done that in one and a team. That's still learning to do that. And that's not a knock on the new york. Islanders binding means but boy tampa than impressive team and again that can beat you so many different ways. This next game is everything for the islanders. I really do believe that they're not gonna be tampa three straight so this game four coming up. It's going to be very very pivotal if they have any shot of sort of winning this series enough ending the defending champs you can't napa purist shifts against tampa literally waving goodbye to dave right now. Our cars are next to each other. I'm waving goodbye care by the arm. Wrestling challenge coming to a podcast near you. Well namely thirty two thousand pod for shirt next year thirty two thoughts piazza versus amber wrestling challenge. The xs even know he's been volunteered for this but too bad we're doing this. We're doing this. He's strong. Do dave's recall all right with alice. Kick it off. Welcome to the podcast thirty-one thought style presented by the gmc sierra eighteen step our way instead of goes sort of took coach. I originally broken up by green carpet shoots stores. But he did point as he's not swiped sedan and let me get the lead. All the time brought out. I think he was out of the boss but good on the tenth. The puck law. I think the islanders job early tightening the diamond kucherov nandita. So welcome with the end of thirty one. Plus the podcast as we do it at this time of year. Thirty thoughts car cast miracle. Longside even is on route Back home Game he discovered tampa and york to the final tampa takes a two one series lead vasilevskiy versus our law mma we saw word score clutterbuck and brayden point and i gotta say that brayden point goal was some kind of clinic in being able to hold on to what you're trying to do. That was remarkable skill by brayden point falling down and putting that puck exactly where he wanted to put it. But was your main takeaway from the thursday night game. Defensive plant tampa bay there were times. Zander's hundred zone but whether they blocked the shot or whether they stick in the right spot or they pounced on a park. That was fumbled. You know tampa well. It did change last year. Because they know they beat some teams that weren't shrinking violets. Like they you know. They beat the bruins. They beat the islanders. They beat dallas and that was a tough team. And i don't think they get enough credit for how mean and nasty and even dirty that they are and i don't like people think when you say the team is dirty that you're ripping them. I think you have to be somewhat dirty to win in this league and think they are. You know i'm talking to one. Gm and he was talking about tampa and he's like everybody thinks they're this nice genteel group of guys is like they're a bunch of pricks and you know. I think the other thing too is this league. it needs villains this whole thing with the cap. If that means that tampa becomes a villain. And i think there's teams out there organizations out there that could trigger crazy by vegas last week. They joked with nashville tweeted. A better for this and nashville create a banner their social minutes. This is why no one likes you. And there is a certain amount of disliking jealousy towards vegas because they're successful so quickly and if that makes them a villain fine just think of it makes tap of villain find. You can't have heroes without villains. And if that means that people are getting upset at tampa because they've done something that almost everybody else in the league is done goal over the salary cap chicago cop with this in two thousand fifteen if they weren't gonna change it then they're not going to change it now. If that means people are villains you know what your league needs villains. I'll tell you what i'll go you one further. I hope they do it again next year. Someone who needs surgery. I hope they're surgeries are timed to coincide with the playoffs next year. Because listen this is a lou. Pull they don't wanna close. Why not we talked about this. Before on the podcast. Do it do it tonight. What we saw three defensive clinic for them. They took a team. That's really talented. The islanders and scores a lot better than they get credit for the islanders. They made life really really difficult on them really difficult. I'm glad you brought up. The point of these players are not nice. Genteel hockey players like. There's some miserable guys on that team. We've the most miserable guy on the tv. Looks like he's the most miserable guy in the league. Never mind never mind the team and you know how miserable we always got to be tough. Plant against you. Know that third line gorge gets under your skin. Coleman's tough barclay. Goodrow is tough. You know how miserable it must be playing every second day against alex killorn awful. That must be awful. It must be playing against sergachev. Hagman mcdonagh all of. There's no choirboys on that team man. They play hard. I say that with all due respect you can this league. The thing that separates the winners in this league especially in the playhouses. You have to be determined like in the pre game tonight was a really nice moment with rod brind'amour's any jack adams and it was presented by brian sutter. And what was the first thing that rod brind'amour's said you know. He said that brian thirty years ago. You were my first coach and you taught me never to waste a gamer shift in this league and it happens in the regular season but in the playoffs. You can't waste a gamer. The chefs and the lightning are out island during the islanders in that game. I'll tell you what right off right out of the eight and yet sought every single shift. Islanders looked slow early. Did they not like that. First period dadele. I thought they become an this at the coliseum. The fans are going to be gone. Crazy and house on fire and tampa is going to have to run their ray. Like i'm like all man this is this is not looking good for tamper with out of the gate and bam. They were skating in mud in tampa was flying just flying. I do wonder they had two good chances later. In the game. Komarov at a couple of chances and it was almost like tap was saying we're not letting or sell pitas. We're not letting everybody beat us. The guys at the point of its or whatever if someone has to piss it'll be. I just wonder if trust with that line. I would think that next game. Leo komarov is not on that line go. I say this calmer. Because i think that gives you an honest effort every night. But it's clear they might need another fisher up there wallstrom rate this way. Okay a couple of other things. You mentioned rod brind'amour's moments ago. This is a big day for rod brind'amour's again when you look at his career. This was an absolutely huge day. You mentioned the jack adams coach of the year also contract extension announced by on today. Gm when the carolina hurricanes it is a three year. Deal men you've been on this for so long. We've talked about this. So many different podcast. What's the update elliott. You must be so thankful enough to hear me. Ask you about it anymore. Just going to have to get a new question. You cannot get one new question. I i try to find one question. And plukett leggy fiddle over and over and over again. I gotta find a new one now about this whole scenario. I mean this is a pretty unique one in a situation like this. The first thing a coach will try to do is create a marketplace when contracts about to expire you sort of generate interest elsewhere to give yourself some leverage rod. Brind'amour's did not do that. I have a hard time believing. Some teams weren't waiting on his decision thinking. Maybe they would have a shod but it seemed right from the get-go this was the only place he wanted to be and was not in any way shape or form interested in trying to create a marketplace. What can you tell us about this entire saga because it was saga. Yeah i think we've said almost everything that needs to be said he wanted to be there. It was what's the old line. And i use it on the air tonight. You find the best looking person for the prom and you shoot your shot right and or the person you want to take the most the prom and you shoot your shot and i think some of these like you know the rangers were looking for a date for the prom for it and seattle was looking for a date for the prom for a bit and i always did think land in new york was the most likely scenario for the rangers. Just wanted to make sure. And you know sarah. Seven of the athletic your. She wrote several times i. It was obvious she was getting exhausted with some of us in a way you know she would say he's not going anywhere. It's carolina or nothing. And she was right. I think she was totally right from the beginning. But it doesn't mean you don't try. And i think people wanted to check and we've talked about it. The the deal was done verbally for a while. He took a lot of heat from some of his contemporaries by you at the end of the day. You know you have to do what you think is right for your family and know. That's what he chose to do. You know the other thing. I said to someone i did have one person who called the thought that what brindamour it was really doing was wrong and they felt i had to something more to pressure them and i said you know at the end of the day. It's his life and e- people have to live their lives for them. You can't constantly be worried about other people. Think what other people tell you to do you and your family and he said well what about all these other coarseness it. Well that's when you have to go and you have to say hey. His situation is unique. And i've talked to you about this book before the bald truth by david fog former basketball super agent and he talked about situations like this where someone would say well ex player on the other teams making this your players. Not better than that. He can't make more than this and fog would say that's their situation. This is your situation. And that's when you have to do and you know. I think a guy like travis. Green and vancouver is a guy who did that. Like i think he's number is significantly higher than what brindamour god. But i think that's to. Do you have to say that's his situation. Our situation is different. I don't like when people tell other people like don't like telling other people like to do so. I don't like people telling me what to do. Do you think though that this and the reported numbers one point eight million dollars. Do you think that this underpayment based on his market value will have any type of cascading effect on other coach signings and moreover have we seen the last of the huge deals for coaches. The elaine venos- the joel quenneville. Mike babcock secluded. Julian's have we seen the end of those deals. i think. Seen some rollback like. I said like he came in from what i understand. Uh significantly overburdened. Amores number. So the answer to me is. It's not going to be used as a cap ceiling if you're a good negotiator and have some leverage geragos lawn. It's been reported as for years at a both three and a half year. So maybe it's not you know twenty million like you would have gotten a few years ago but it's still a very good number. I think because of the situation that everybody's in the league is in we are seeing some dial back. Yes but no things are going to return eventually and someone's going to have some big leverage a certain point in time where we're going to test although i do think there's been a pullback and i do think a lot of teams are very curious about duns whole thing in carolina about this is what i think you're worth and i'm not going past that and one of his assistant coaches is going through that you should nelson dougie hamilton's going through that were he says if you feel you can do a better job for your market value. Go ahead and do it. But we'll see. I'm only going to a certain point. What are the questions out of. All of this now is what happens with the seattle search right now and rick talk. It's name is ralph right now. Front and center eliot. i'm understanding. He's got a third meeting with them. Set and you know. I never liked to say anything's a guarantee but just the fact that it's a third meeting you've got to think it's a good omen forum sold. We'll see where that goes. I heard david. Quinn had been interviewed by them and someone told me that windsor was actually really good. But it sounds like you know for a third time. You've got to think if there's something reason for that right so we'll see where it goes. It seems like talking at this point in time. And his as david brought up on air tonight because arizona i think is going. You know mike van ryan or todd nelson or lane lambert somebody in that realm buffalo. I don't know you know buffalo and interesting one where you know cappuccino. Ottawa did not allow permission. And i know. Don granato and kevin adams met on wednesday. And there's no announcement yet so we'll see but i don't see buffalo arizona going the babcock tortorella clo- julian route. So what i think next year jeff. When the season starts if a team gets off to a slow start there's gonna be some serious juice in terms of what could be available for a team that begins poorly expensive coaches sitting on the sidelines. Waiting two pounds a couple more things. try to keep our car cows taking right here ob spring my ear buds. In you guys got me okay. Here is hot. you guys got me okay. Here vote okay. What's happening between anaheim in buffalo. Jack eichel jeff. They're definitely talking. You know i'm on record. As saying i think anaheim's going to try to do something big you know. I reported this week. That i've heard that the teams are saying that buffalo was potentially going to have a second pick in the top ten or high in the draft and anaheim sitting there right at number three. You know. I do think there's teams out there. Jeff who who do believe offload is not one in the eastern conference in anaheim. Last i checked on a maps not in eastern conference. Truth can confirm. i definitely think. There's there's Going on there. I in you know the other thing too is you know. Anaheim wasn't willing to include Are drysdale for for do blah. I'm curious to see how this riding goes for. Uncle was going to say you're dealing this. Is jack eichel here like this. is you know. get healthy. And he's one of the best players in the national hockey league with all due respect to pure luke to wa. He ain't jackal right and you're looking at. You're looking at transitioning from the ryan guests. Laugh era into another huge centerman in jack. Eichel love jamie drysdale. i really liked trevor's egress. I also like a third overall. Pick but we're talking about jack eichel here. The other thing too is by the way i did have one team told me that they think that there's i club out there. That's trying to get one of the full words and risked allied in. But i don't know who it is and align yes that one of the teams is trying to get two of those guys. How much do we say that. By the beginning of next season eichel resign and reinhard lol have different addresses. I think it's likely. I think they want to start over in those guys all need fresh starts where's Where's the main interest from what you've been able to glean for For san reinhart columbus. I've been told some of the teams that are in on eichel might also be non reinhard so for example say listen up anaheim. That doesn't mean that reinhardt couldn't end up there. I've heard columbus and reinhard a lot. But i think there's quite a few teams i mean. I think this next couple of weeks is is just gonna be for rumors and stuff is going to be bananas. The old to me philly. I am really curious to see what they're going to do. They're they're like in the middle of everything. What's the one thing that we talked about at the end of the year that they really knew the fix their ability to defend. Yeah that's got to be front and center. No they're gonna go after a goalie carter heart. I'm wondering if they're thinking someone who's going to challenge hurt. Wow like a short term veteran my thinking there was always you know job number one this offseason as get carter heart back to where they thought carter heart was gonna be this year. All you have to do that to of all those teams. You're talking about like i. I think this is going to heat up pretty fast. There are big names. That are already out there. We just talked about eichel. And reinhard we've talked about dougie hamilton already et cetera. There's some players on the boston bruins. i'm sure we can. We can go over but who are some of the more interesting teams for you to follow right now as far as chasing rumors and this team's gonna be active getting into the draft. Who are a couple before we start to drill down on these next couple weeks who catches your eye. Okay well columbus. Yep obviously anaheim buffalo philly. Someone told me. And i wrote it. This week. i think florida's gonna try to be aggressive. I think colorado is going to be really interesting because you know i wrote this week. That the biggest question there is. What's my car's number going to be. I had some people tell me this week. They will do everything in their power to keep laddis cock that they feel they really need him first of all. They feel that he's been so loyal to the team. He's everything you want your franchise standard to be. And they feel an enormous amount of loyalty and respect to him because of that and secondly they feel he's critical they finally sets an attitude and the other thing too is you'll mckinnon is such an incredibly driven and competitive guy. Sometimes you need someone to say. Okay nathan ease up a little bit today or alright. Stop killing everybody in practice today. And and landis cog is kind of that guy so someone said to me that colorado is going to do something to make sure that they can keep him to and plus. they're disappointed. they lost so they might be very creative. And i think they might be very interesting. I'll tell you this. I'm wondering what had mentioned to in more than just a zakheim incense. Yeah i think. I'd mentioned is going to be interesting like we think they're reassigning larson. I don't know about our age like everybody's locked down on that one. And i think it's because they're really trying to get it done but i think edmonton looks at the way the season ended and i think they obviously believe in their top guys. I think they believe in some of their young guys who are coming. But then i think they say you know what else do we need. We have to take a hard look at what we need. And i think they're doing that to me question at edmonton still is who's rigoli guy. Last one for you get your thoughts on this one. The jim gregory g m of the year award. I had voted in this one mark. Berge van lula morello and bill zero three general managers who had three very distinct teams with different objectives. My big question about the gm of the year award is. How do you evaluate it. What makes a good general. Ed how do you evaluate a general. Managers moves that season within like this twelvemonth frame. I just don't understand the criteria for like how you decide that berge van had a better season than lamb willow as good as season zero. Just don't get the criteria if you voted for like what went into it for you. Don't think i'm allowed to release my ballot yet. So i'll just talk. No no no. No no philosophic what are you looking at. I'm just saying that. I would tell you who i voted for but i don't think i'm allowed to do that yet. The one thing. I kind of like about this award is that it's unique in the sense. That is the only one. That's after two rounds. I kinda liked that about it. It creates a bit of a crutch which is okay. There's four gm's after two rounds. Which three weeks for the one thing i liked about it this year was that you know. There was somebody in there who his team had a great regular season and didn't make final four but still got in there. Like i like that. I will tell you that i had six guys and i had to cut it down to three and of those six. You know zito and there was another gm on my list. Who aren't here right now. But i thought they had phenomenal regular seasons in turned around teams very quickly and for me. It was simply when you look back at the last year. Who did a really good job with their teams. Like so when. I look at the finalists. They'll just talk about them because the finalists were all my big group of six for zito. He took a team that ended last year terribly. Made a bunch of budget signings really and that improved the team and the overall team. It got better. There were some rocky moments. No question about it but you know. He made a bunch of small moves from he to do claire to other things that they did. Not trading wieger thought had a fantastic season. Two sure and i liked his body of work. He breathed new life into florida. You'll lamb. I just think again. The islanders i look at where they are. They're greater than the sum of their parts. This year they lost their captain and he hit a home run at the deadline. Yes i just think. He's he's built with barry trotz. They're a team. that's consistent. And i thought the fact that they lost lee and they still did well at the deadline. And they're here and pull marian zajac of both in good players for them. I thought that was very legitimate. Burs urban i will admit that was one of the biggest challenges for me. He was on my list of six. You know two weeks ago three weeks ago. it's probably longer. I don't even know what data's anymore they were. Twenty four hours from running him at a town cracked. It was a big challenge for me and it just shows you how slim the margin is right. I have a friend who's a gambler. He says when you pull a victory out of assure defeat he calls it pulling an inside straight and five card stud. You're not supposed to be able to do that and this year. If you look at burs they were in trouble and his moves came up pulling that inside straight and he looks really smart. See one of the things that fight with Philosophically here about voting on this one. Like if i had a vote. I don't know that. I would know how to vote appropriately. Because i'm still fighting the question of is it more impressive to build something or sustain it. You know like berge even zito built something. Okay these ito like he rebuilt that team. The other thing too also will percents story. Jeff is that he stayed with his convictions. Right in what sense. He had a plan. He went with his plan. It didn't look like it was gonna work. Oh yeah a good chunk of his fan base hated it and he said whatever. I'm doing it if i'm going down. I'm going down in flames this way. Just the whole nature of this award to like so much of of what. A general manager has is a lot of times built by someone else bill by her predecessor. I mean this You know. Brian burke will always talk about the moves of ryan. Murray made That help the anaheim. Ducks win the stanley cup. In two thousand seven in chicago. Blackhawks went in two thousand. Ten stan. bowman. As a general manager but evans looking dale talent. And i believe. I don't know who did it but one. Gm voted for dale tallon as general manager of the year in two thousand ten. Even though he wasn't a general manager at the end of that season. I just don't know how it would vote because i don't know what's more impressive taking and maybe it's the same thing about the coach of the year as well. What's more impressive. Sustaining an excellent team or taking a bad team and making a good. I don't know the answer. I think sustaining is harder. I do then. Lamb has got to be the choice of those three guys. I had on my list. This year. That i considered. I'm not saying what my my balance was the other three guys i can say julian breeze wa bill. Garin and kelly crimen all excellent. I'll tell you what you know. What right out of the and. Maybe it's just the you know. He's the the new sexy in general managers. I loved what. Bill guaranteed this year. I think it took a lot to do what he did and he had to make some unpopular decisions. It's like what we said about berge of any of the courage of his convictions and he's still going to make more and he's still going to do more like so for a guarantee. Been really impressive okay. "Hour by go sport than in partnership with tsn. Welcome to season. Do this is episode. Twenty seven of the ray drags hockey podcast presented by our title sponsor. in finnity. lots. To talk about ray and we'll get the headlines coming up momentarily you look around the national act of the i dunno elbow you but i i guess i'm a little surprised at how tight the series ours. We're recording here on friday. You've got montreal. Earning the split with the vegas golden knights. You've got al of a series with the islanders in the tampa bay lightning. That is far more defensively in tune than what i was expecting me. And you know you're going to get that from the islanders by the tampa bay. Lightning pretty good defense team as well. Aren't they you know. I mean you look at point gets the go goal and in the second period and they basically shut down any of that from that series surprising you would have been before. But i think we saw last year drake's because they had the learn to play a different way it couldn't be five four all the time and you know stamkos steven stamkos said after the last game. Look we we just have total. Buy into what we need to do. And it's hard to play that way like if you're an offensive guy. It's hard to bury your instinct. Always tried to create offense. I'm i'm super impressed. Actually i think that series is unbelievable. What a horror series that is and and you could tell both coaches barry trotz and jon cooper predictably kicked in going into game three right because games one game two. There was all the after. Whistle stuff scrum after scrum and you could just tell that the officiating at some point was going to was gonna take over and start pulling one guy who guys out of the scrums right. Sa- game three seem to be far different than game. Two as an example all everybody was was more check with their emotion. I think yeah i. I think you're looking at half of the canadian coaching staff for the olympic team. Some way shape or form. Do terrific coaches What i'm interested in for game four is not much happening with the islanders line and only calmer off can stay there. Take a look maybe all all over wallstrom might end up making an appearance that can shoot the puck really shoot it and i wonder if they find room for him in that lineup somewhere. Quick thought on montreal in vegas again. We're recording here. On friday against set for game three and in montreal and i know what. You're a believer in the montreal canadians. I think a lot of us. I still feel like the vegas. Golden knights deserve the edge in this series. Now they've gonna earn it. They've got to prove that they're deserving of that level of attention but man. I don't know why people seem surprised that the montreal canadians were able to do what they did in vegas. Yeah at this point. I don't think you should be surprised anymore. I mean they've won. Seven straight games through toronto and winnipeg game one not a great game form not terrible not great and then they put together a really good game to what what i keep coming back to for vegas though. Drake's is when we had max patch already on the show. He's terrific guests. We asked them about somebody that had surprised at once. He got the vegas and he pulled. Chandler stevenson outplayed. That he did he said man. This guy's a first line center. We're like really no idea and man. He's out of that lineup. And the first sold the guy that replaced them. The guy that replaced him in the lineup. Was patrick brown now. First goal joel are beats brown out of the corner and scores. Yes second goal. Nicholas nicholas wall who replaced evenson on that talk line. He made a coverage mistake. So one guy being out of the lineup being stevenson impacted the first two goals. You know when i look at vegas and kalomo criminal and george mcphee of done so much to change that roster and relatively short period of time and they're in a conference final for the third straight a run at this thing right so you know. There's there's no questioning that the depth of the organization for me though and correct me. If i'm wrong is out their weakness. I mean is chandler. Stevenson a bona fide number one center in the national hockey league. Or if he's your number two and and you've got somebody better are vegas. golden knights. Almost unstoppable at that point. I think the second way would be the way they would love to go. Here's the thing in the cap world. Goods aren't for anybody not to have a weakness. Now had they been able to predict it. Marc andre fleury would return to this brilliant. Maybe they wouldn't have signed robin leonard to five million dollars to join the cap that gives you more room to get a different player. But it's just been a remarkable story. Flurry has been anyway. But yeah i would say that's the that's the achilles heel a little bit of their team. Well speaking of remarkable stories. We'll caufield nicks ziggy. The youth of the montreal canadian certainly doing their job as they continue to make their way through the semi final pony ground or the head. Coach of the wisconsin badgers former coach for coal. Coffee will join us. We'll talk about cool. We'll talk about his life. Experience with ray ferraro and the entire granato land some of the experiences. You guys shared playing against each other back in the day. So looking forward to tony's assessment on what he sees and might get a little light hearted or not. We'll see all the thing is like. Tony was like many players. That is a completely different person on the ice off. Yeah like he is a he is a tremendous person. He was vicious on the ice in. Don't let his demeanor fool. You is a super nice guy. he was vicious. Carve you with a smile. All he loved his stick was a weapon. It's awesome all right. We look forward to hearing from tony. Granato kubat. Chris will stop by lots to talk about with google that chris obviously with. Us open golf. Euro two thousand twenty shift in a playoff series in the stanley cup semifinals. All of that by the way social media was the buzz over the last few. And i don't you know. Sometimes you look through your reply. Sometimes you don't because you've done a nice job. I think managing your social media. You don't you don't pile on nearly as much as you used to. And that's by design right you know. It's it's mental health. You don't need to get pissed off at genoa. Drake's can i tell you a quick story. Yeah somebody had ripped me something. Which of course happens. It's the way it is and a went back at the guy and then the guy tweeted the next day. I've gotta take a break from social media. I can't i can't get my head around the responses. I'm getting and i was like you know what i'm responsible for that because i directed a crap storm stuff towards this guy and i wrote over direct message apologized and for me. That was a lightning bolt turnaround. Time like that is not what twitter's folks to be nam and twitter. Twitter is a cesspool. And it's a you know we're all on it. I can't stand a lot of it. I find a lot of good to us. When i find a lot of bad to it and and that was a turning point for me. I'm not. I'm just not interested in it anymore and i feel badly for doing it. No you're right. And and i do that as well. I'll direct message someone if they've come personally at me and i'll just try and diffuse it. You know what. Why does this have to get personal. What have i done and nine times out of ten. That person if they bother to respond to the direct message. Say right now. I don't i didn't mean anything by it and you know you just you just let it go but the reason i bring up social media. I got a good chuckle. You drag out the golf clubs. And and because i think every golfer can feel like you were doing and have done it. It doesn't matter what the kitchen looks like. You have a state of the art direction. Like june cami have beautiful. But hey the golf clubs gotta get shined up. They've gotta get ready you to look after your friends and there's a brush right there. I did replace the brush. That didn't that didn't generate as much enthusiasm from me as you might suspect was awesome so anyway i encourage those two Wanted comment on our experienced on our social media channels on rain greg's to continue to do so. You can grab them in restaurants drive through on the tim. Hortons app feel like we talked about the series. So why don't we just kinda move on to some of the news of the week or your general sense. You and. I were texting thursday night. Just kind of mapping out the raindrops podcast in our headlines segment and through some by you. And i think that we feel kinda the same correct me if i'm wrong just the younger players and how much more clout today's player has an influence in the national hockey league and is aggressively sharing opinion etc. Now i'm talking about the jack. The young stars right. If you're you know third or fourth year player and you're still trying to find your way chances are you're not flex in too much. Must although i think jack ross lava can patrick lyon a with winnipeg weren't happy so the deal happens with the columbus blue jackets pierre-luc dubois wasn't happy in columbus comes back the other way to winnipeg. But does that make sense to you. I mean does it feel like today's young. Nhl star budding star young player as way more influence not always own career but in certain cases the direction of the nhl team that he is playing on. Yeah feel it feels like for sure. Now i do find that this thought has always been there with the with the young star player but now they're using it as as you mentioned his influence. I think before it had been a lot behind the scenes. A lot of chatter between the team and the star will now. It's it comes out into public. It's using leverage using force of of who you are and and your abilities. But i mean we see it in the nba. Quite frequently. and so. I am not surprised that it's you know that it comes to you know to hockey as well. But here's the thing drinks. The players are going to need to realize and i would encourage teams like you got to play the game if if the players gonna use their influence. There were times when the team has. The influence were the team as the collective bargaining agreement the contractual obligations on their side. And they've got you cannot try and fluff up the player all the time expecting loyalty back. That is not what's to happen. It just does not happen that way if you if you're the team and you player that that is kicking up a little bit of a fuss. There's two things you can do. You can either deal with it. Like move the player. That's what you feel or dig your heels in because what's the guy going to do. Is he gonna quit. It's the like a player. I'm not gonna play there anymore. We'll guess what don't yeah and right. Now i'm not going to trade you you wouldn't you like i. You know i mean at the peak of your career. I don't know how involved you with management or you run with zero. Yeah but but how many players would have been involved to that degree back that other conversation very few very few i can think of drinks. But but now if it's okay to fast word and i'm not trying to present this as a negative on. Hey i think march i. I probably pissed off that. Things didn't go the way that he was hoping winnipeg now. His four-game suspension didn't help obviously against the montreal canadian's and mcdavid and edmonton. And i don't wanna be that guy that kinda gets the social media run going again about. Oh a connors gotta get out of there. That's not what i'm suggesting. But i think they you given how opinionated you can be if it was a different era and you're at the top of your game. Why wouldn't you have a conversation. I think i would have been in today's world. I would have been different for sure. But here's the thing so you know you bring up. mcdavid sharply to two maccabees. Best player in the game snotty close in my right. Yeah and shades lisa. It's the centerpiece. The star in winnipeg people talk all the time about a hometown discount. Why don't these players take hometown discount. I would encourage none of them to take them. Because you have to look after yourself. Now if you're talking about fifty million dollar contract and you're talking over seven years of five hundred thousand dollars a year so it costs three point five million dollars. If you think that's going to help team go ahead. But if you're if fans are thinking that players are going to take fifteen million dollars last crazy to do that but here's the thing then the other side of that is you might end up chewing up all the cow you can say to the manager like i could go as a player and say he manager. You've got to put a better team together. And he goes no cap space paying all guys so you have to accept that that's just the way it is. The delicate balance is a hard thing. Look tampa bay in dallas. They have legitimate the floor and for that matter to they have legit advantages through their tax situation. Seattle's have another one. They don't have a state tax matters and it matters so you can say to someone. Hey look you're gonna be a free agent you're gonna make seven million dollars a year. We think on the open market but here. It's six forty two million and that's not even a haircut. That's just the difference in st. Pat's i mean the musicals. Numbers facetiously. I don't i don't have the tax gap in front of me. But those are legit advantages. This is not as cut and dry as people think but the players or using their influence. They're using their voice a lot more than they have in the past. And i think the teams have to do the same thing like kay. This is the way it is. You don't wanna play. Don't sit at home and you don't get paid and i'm not treating you not at this point unless the right deal comes to me so sick. They're russ growing your skates but in the meantime if you wanna come back come back and play that way we can get something for you you can fluff your trade value and maybe there's a deal down the road. Well we're talking buffalo and we'll shift over to coaching here. But i don't see any way that i comes back. Just based on how conversations around kevin adams that regressed heated up in the last number of days jackals he. He's gonna get traded so now just think of complications of that jackals a tremendous talent. What's his name. What's that neck areas fine area like. What's it gonna be like maude all five. If you're asking me for your top young prospects your first round pick a roster player and another play. And i've got to give you that and i don't know what the long range you wis. I need to have a little more certainty if i'm the acquiring team and that's going to be a complication not deal. No question big coaching news. This week. Right odd brindamour gets a three year extension with the carolina hurricanes on the same day. He wins the jack adams and gerard gone hired by the new york rangers. To get is that i. I don't think anyone expected rod brind'amour's gonna leave the gains so your thoughts and his extension now in winning the jack adams over some buddies of yours in edison was strong in the mix and a second. Joel quenneville finished third jerry. Bednarz four might sullivan. V but hard argue with jack. Adams going to rod brind'amour's no i. What a terrific job. He's done in carolina. Sometimes the coaches the looks like the right fit in the right place. And that's what rod looks like in in carolina. When i'm watching those postgame things his speeches unreal when. I'm watching him behind the bench. I'm like man. I would love to have played for him That's my first thought. All time like how could you not be connected to play for him. And there'll be days when you wanna play for him and you're like oh my god. He is asked today like he's hard today. Sure but that's every day or every team and every every businessman there's days you don't love your boss but that's just the way man. I'd love to play for him. I really what he deserves. The coach of the year the extension good for him. He wanted to stay. They wanted him to stay. I'm glad it worked. As you know the the finalist there. A couple of wailers second and third. Joel adid bolsover monarch penalty kill by the way good for them by deeds first full year in minnesota so really happy for my old roommate and enjoys a jolt. Go into the hall of fame terrific job. He did there as gerard gallant time. You know i've played with gerard in world championships in nineteen eighty nine and kept in touch on and off and may just a friendly person. Such a good person was fired amongst successful campaigns. In both florida and vegas. He's a good coach. He just took a unheralded. Canadian demon won the world championship like his resume is is really great and i think he's walking into a pretty good spot in new york. There's lots of really impressive. Exciting young players. There you gotta keep an eye on rick. Talk it as well ongoing dialogue with the seattle caracas. So hard to imagine. That talk is going out of the bench when things get going in the off season in readiness for the start of what we hope will be healthy. Twenty one twenty two campaign ray. It's time for a yamaha performance players of the past week and everybody knows you're out on the west coast. Thank couvert So i think that we need to talk to our good pals at yamaha to maybe get you out on one of their support fish camps off. You have the patience to fish rain. I mean really fish not just cast a line. But i mean get on a fancy yamaha boat and tour out somewhere you know what really invest the time to catch some fish no. I don't don brock. This up with tony granato is. Now tony is a huge muskie fisherman. He keeps telling me tells us since pictures of these muskie that they catch. Which of course you release which i think is wait a minute you catch it and then you release you just catch the same fish twelve days in a row at the same guy. It's not the way it works but okay anyway. So he's telling me on these on these fishing trips. Generally you get up early. You cook breakfast. Equal fish in the ninth year. You cook up what you eat like. Yes third of the day in the end of the day. Sounds i six hours in the boat in the middle. I don't know. Maybe i just don't know enough about her. Maybe i need to go get an education. You're asking me today. it's not well. I don't understand see i and i do. I grew up fishing. And now that we've got the lake spot in manitoba and kind of in the market for an outboard right and shocking to no one. I mean trying by a golf cart. Try and buy a side by side or lake whatever motorcycle go down the list of all the great products that yamaha has even the boards. It's hard to do because everybody in the pandemic has just glommed onto these things right so even the use stuff cooked lock. There's a lineup to get a hold of that. So that's gonna be my challenge. Maybe not for this summer. I think i've got time but to assemble all the lake toys that i need for the summer of two thousand and twenty two. So we're featuring the yamaha outboards this week a so many different models specs ranging from portables up to the innovative four twenty five yom makes an board that will pair ideally with whatever package you choose. You can trust yamaha to deliver the performance. You expect with the reliability that you deserve so for more information. Go where i go. And that is yamaha. Motor dot ca ray gamble performance player of the past. Week is what happened. The unplug your microphone. I did unplugged. It's okay. I think you were so silky smooth. You were trying to get it by me. If i didn't see your hand and an cord and all of that you might have you might have slipped one by on a this is yeah. That's my bad. I sold the best part about it was. I didn't listen to you for thirty seconds. It was fantastic. What it was asking you your performance player easy brayden point. Oh of course. it's easy all right. Eleven goals and thirteen games. Are you kidding me. How could it be anybody. Three-game winners right awesome and the man that that guy is. I just love watching him play. He is so good and Clutch goal that he scored the to one winner is knocked on his face after he's already deflected the puck once and he gets to it again and he's he's by performer. The week i might share mine with to montreal canadian's players tyler to fully just again it might go wire-to-wire in terms of being most consistent certainly with the montreal canadians. I mean. we shouldn't be surprised by that. But it's it's. It's not even a player like that drake's everyone's ever mind well and you know what he. He's a complete player though right. We'll talk to tony and how call costs there's going around his game out as he develops in the nhl but you look at the penalty. Kill time that tyler to fully invest the power. Play the five on five. All of that bike. He clearly is become in a short period of time. On don linked disarms most trusted players now in every situation. You know what's cool to fully to. He doesn't go a million miles an hour. Got head for the game like both points and and only do you don't need to be the biggest guy you don't need to be the fastest guy but you gotta be able to think and they both do it at an elite level right right. Well brady point of the tampa bay lightning and tyler toffoli montreal. Canadians are yamaha. Performance players of the week. The alcoho- revs your hearts ray. Yonaha rub your hearts that that. That's that's one of the better once. That's one of the better ones. I was actually. I was hoping i was just pleased. Let him say he. Emma rans here engine gotta write this week. I gotta right thing so when you're skipping down the fairway are you. Are you going through it in your head. Oh no but i've got one. I got one. I'm going to change it up next week. i think i can change it up. Our i will don't they. That's a good teaser. That'll drag everybody into episode twenty terrific stuff. Our interview in this episode is with tony granato. Head coach of the wisconsin. Badgers great insight on cool caufield brought to you by our good pals. Canadian club whisky. Who are asking. Are you over beer. Why not try refreshing. Cc ginger ale line next time you're the great or watch him again. All right pleased to be joined on the ranger eggs hockey podcast by tony granato. Who has a number of different labels that we could bring them into the show with today. Ray right at the top of the list of course. Head coach of the wisconsin. Badgers would second then be the brother-in-law to the great ray ferraro and then more or would would second be the older brother of the great cammi granato. I go i full of it right also so you just don't the workout. You never really slow down do you. Like when's the last time you sat for thirty minutes and did that way. I would say that. I might have got that from you. What we got. Our our kids are in town. They had a seven thirty friday mornings. You get their seven thirty competition workout going so i come down early with them. Just let them know that coaches care them and sale over them. And then i send them off because i can't keep up with them anymore. So it'd be my own little thing. What's the what's the competition workout. They get they pair up and then they do some sort of sprint races and then every week it changes but our strength and conditioning coach got a new one. This year paul lukas. He was with the la kings minor league team and ontario. He just got on board and he's carrying over with jimmy. Snyder who had our program for less fourteen years is done every friday in the summer they have seven thirty beginning. Start to competition workout. So it's it's a good way to start the weekend. They're done after this workup for the weekend there. Lots of noise going on loud music will bit energy down there. And like i say i get out of once they get going now when when the kids are in and out through the summer like do you have them. There are some there. Fulltime are some. They're in and out. Like what are you able to do in the in the in the bylaws of what college unfortunately for us especially so many guys misused unique is the same. As last there's no development kampfer players most farmers a regular summer. Fifteen twenty guys are getting ready for their development camps for junior tryout camps. So so they come here they trained. They're allowed to work out with our strength and conditioning coach. They're allowed to go on the ice as much as they want. So basically. They're doing a captain's practice. They got unlimited ice. We get the facility. It's there's they are able to use it at any time. So it's a great place to train and get ready for for. You know not only next season. But like i said the camps that they may have in the summer you mentioned fifteen to twenty going to development camps. Certainly one of the most noteworthy wisconsin badgers right now. Coal caufield with with montreal canadian's he's just injected energy life skill into the canadians lineup. Reprised no i'm not surprised. Now what he put into it this year to be ready for the opportunity. You know you always you know. Watch a kid and you see how and what he does to be ready and from my standpoint you know. He finished last year the leading score in the big ten. That's extremely hard to do. It's been done for a freshman to walk in lead the league in scoring but at the end of the year montreal and call had a conversation and montreal thought. You're not quite ready to go back and do some things to make sure you're ready to play in the nhl and no from that day of that conversation with montreal. He put a list down things piece to prove on the asked for my opinion yesterday. Rob ramage opinions real big into their player development side of things. And i can tell you right now every day probably looked at it instead of doing this and we'll get better at this policy my game in these areas so when i do leave wisconsin. I can have a chance to be ready to play in montreal. So i i tell you from coaches specked of i mario kid because you know the hard conversation that you had with bruce. Where's last year at the end of the year saying they need to go back to school. he didn't pout. He didn't come in here hanging his head. He came in here on a mission to do exactly what was asked of and the be baker when gold medal there in canada with the us team. Christmas is one of the leaders realizing that every time he touches the puck. He doesn't have to try to score a goal there. There's plays to be made to to help your team which plays to be made to make your teammates better and if you watch the plays as made in the playoffs. He used using his teammates. Maybe as well as anyone on that team and that to me is really exciting. As twenty year old player to be able to come in there and recognized. Foley's coming through the slot and he's gonna open up where to slide the puck to you know how to taper goalie for a second or freeze the goal for second before you do. Make that pass like these. Are these players that plays that players are usually ten or twelve years in the league. Takes figure out how to do and he's already been able to to jump into that. You know you know pettiness of the playoffs and be able to execute the way he has. This is exciting for me to watch. But i i watched it all year. I knew he'd be ready to give whatever he had and fortunately he's been given that opportunity. Only you know you. You mentioned his playmaking i. I've seen him with two world. Juniors of course we don't get to watch them daily like you do. I don't remember him making plays like this even as just as recently as january. It's like it's taken something different. He's taken another step with. It agree totally and that that goes back to one of the things was. How do you make your teammates better. How do you use your teammates to help them help you. And you know that to breakaway head suzuki and the last brown and the chance last year one hundred of one hundred times shot the puck in the net and the game this year. We realize tech teammate coming. I'll slow down a little bit freeze. Go slide it over and we'll win that way that way. Both of us have part of this goal. I think that's just been as mentality in in the last little while is figuring that part of the game out and again when you're a goal scorer and ray you're a great goalscorer but you also move the puck so you kind of have the combination of both but lots of great goals. Scores are just goalscorers. Giving gonna shoot. Cole was like that last year. He wanted the puck. He knew he could score. He knew if he gave it to somebody else. They wouldn't have as good a chance score. Now he's realized. I said how how to use his teammates he. He's able to identify who has the better chance than him. Maybe in certain situations shoot it. And that's what i think elevates him to his his understanding of the game is understanding on how to how to become up more complete player. Certainly you know impressed me all the way along the last two years and what done in the playoffs. I guess hasn't surprise me. Just because they continue to say the working in time he's put into be ready. You've been in wisconsin now. A number of years koshen. Nhl for almost a decade gas man. Who was crazy out fast at when what have you noticed. The biggest change. Maybe from coaching in the nhl. Now you're coaching and a such an established big program in wisconsin. The kids coming in what they see and what they get when they leave. Here's the thing. I was thinking about this. I figured it s some sort of question like that. And the predictable. I'm pretty well believe it or not. The one thing that i really you know. Sometimes you get labeled with certain thing we've got just go call kohl's will go score is going to be a ghost story as low. He's not he's a complete player. He's gonna he's gonna be a guy that can make plays when the games online and uses teammates. So so i think when you when you label a guy. Sometimes in the nhl. We did a lot. One of the label's remember this kid's not just not comfortable and what i hear you know a kid could come in. It could be extremely hard to get your message through to that player. But it doesn't mean he's uncomfortable and if you give him time and patience and you find different ways of explaining your message some point it might not be as quick as you'd like it to be understood but at some point if you know if you are doing a good job as a coach you can make a become coach so i think that's you know certain things labels that you get players when they get to. Nhl that label on a guy and it sticks with his whole career. But i think if you've got the right people around him and ray coach and you. Can you identify what to know what the areas are that. You need to improve on into that player. Most players approachable. Let's face it. They wanna play. They wanna be on the ice to be on the ice. You have to do with the coach watts. That's being sociable. I think that's probably the biggest thing that kind of taught myself did you when you're down on a player because he's not you know picking up what you're trying to teach be patient find a different way maybe to communicate it and if you're persistent enough think that player can come around and game whatever skills or whatever ideas. You're trying to have them understand from your first the last game you played with incredible energy tenaciousness now. Your first game didn't quite go as well as maybe a dream disagree. I think that's exactly what you wanted to go. I got on the ice on the ice then at the end of the game. My bag wasn't packed. Looks an airplane ticket to the minor. So i got step kid game out of it. Yeah it was pretty okay so you get the chicago your first game in chicago now. Don't tell us a little bit. About course i know the story but tell tell us a little bit. That went well. I grew up. Fortunately enough to to get a chance to see quite a few games in the old stadium and little kid you know the anthems gone and you're standing up screaming like all the rest of this whatever. Thousands of people are for the anthony. Get blackhawks all fired up. Play by first game was in chicago stadium as an opponent with the rangers. And i'm shaking and the noise and the energy and it brought back memories of me with my brothers and sisters and parents and grandparents and friends you know sitting up in those stands now on the ice though i had i i never really had a problem getting energy for games but that will for the top and my first down the age with john fi and i can't remember who i change four but puck was behind. Chicago's net wilson. Passes it up to steve larmer around the boards and my jump over the boards. I see exactly where the past is gone. It's going up the weak side of the net. The larmer so be line from the best alarm probably one and a half seconds. I get there and alarm turned his back to try to protect talk about six feet from the boards in goes headfirst into the boards. Pretty hard a major in fact then though it was good though because you didn't get thrown out automatically so i just got a major but the bad part is elsie cord and all of the other blackhawks. That lammers teeth weren't ms miles anymore. After i hit him they wanted to get back. After that i at the end of the game i ended up having a major for boring a major fighting to black guy with that i could barely see in a to tie remember. We tied so mr guys man that is one stat line in for nate jones penalties. After the first game it was. it was awesome. Don't you went get rookie of the year. Had a big star new york. You end up getting traded to los angeles and all lead. You won rookie of the year. Yes yeah there's no one touching ligi noman wanna play. I would say he was the best most talented guy i played. I just thought he was amazing. Yeah i i would agree with is a talent is talent is ability to see the ice in his mobility back there than for sure but you play with rats. Come on you know i do you. Muskrats i got the la read after he got traded. It's like getting into a new year's eve party and the bands already finished plan. I was there with you for that too. I forgot you came after now. When you get tally will you end up with the with gretz. A roommate now. You didn't know him did you. Or did you know woman all. I met him the year before with brian. Leetch ironically enough that you brought up she so we're at the awards ceremony year before he won rookie of the year. And we. and there's there's there's there's way and go lets go ahead on leads you. Science kid in the world was especially at twenty years old or whatever. He wasn't who rookie there. And why don't we get picked up. And he was all right. Let's go you ask him when i go no. Us we did. We really we go. Hey and wayne turns around and wait. Hey brian great season and you're phenomenal. ceased awesome. Hey tony nice to see a great year wayne's making us feel like we're the guys that he wants to see that we want to see him. Then that's that was what i remember most about we do. We took that picture. I got up in my office Brian leetch swing. Gretzky and myself and i did meet him at that time but you know we play against him a couple of times and you try to pretend like he's just a different you know he's another player trying to program yourself that okay even if you're on the ice with wayne just don't embarrass yourself. Make sure you play them hard enough and respect enough and and When i when. I was with the rangers one year. We had a checking or checking wing. John ericsson one of the best two way players that ever played with and he was the guy that always was given the assignment. Okay playing gretzky night. You got well for some reason. Schober ron who was my coach skates around the rink and morning scathing. You got gretzky tonight skates away from me. What the heck does that mean. I get gretzky. So i skate back up to him a couple of laps later what you just tell me before us wherever you go you go beyond the as the x. I've never been given a defensive responsibility in my life and you're gonna ask me to chase wayne gretzky ring. Why did that game. And we won the game and went pretty well probably how to three or four points thought. Good job we won the game and from that moment forward. What use mcdonald told me when we got when when he called me for the trade he says. Hey remember that game. You played against gretz year. That was a game after game. Grits said you gotta get this guy so so. When i was going to l. a. And i knew that wayne gretzky actually recognize the fact that i was on the ice for the other team. I said wow. How cool is that. So i was. I was a little bit. I would say nervous would be the right word for when when i found out i was going to be as roommate. But he is the easiest nicest and best roommate you could ever ask for. you know. you're wondering. Okay what do you do. What are you doing all that stuff just was it just was just one of the other guy's phenomenal team. He was a guy that to me is what a professional athlete should be. And i will always be grateful for those six and a half years that i had chance to play. Watch your four admire and whatever else you want to throw into that same sentence. He was just a treat to be around. Did you have to did you guys. I'm assuming like he had to dodge like crowds everywhere. Like so were you. Were you like kind of like you know like the idea that stumps for doing get used to come with us. Gretz gradstein like going anywhere by himself so being his roommate and stuff after games when we go eat i'd go with them. You know he'd usually. I was one that wanted to get the bed know earlier than later and a lot of times after dinner. You know those guys sit around for a little bit. And i say guess i gotta go back in and he just made sure that that jay was with them or somebody was whistling. We like to know love. The part about you know the just teammate. Part of being with. And you know. And i go back to the room for a little bit in the room and pretty soon i turn the light on. Hey you can't sleep on. We'd be talk until three in the morning about the game. And the other thing i remember about 'grats is the game's over and he could go back to any playing the game and then talk about it and for me the game so fast you know at the end of the game. Okay remember react to get a couple of shots and eighty one. It was two games. And i remember a few little things about the game. He could remember where my stick was. Defense when was what the options were on play. And i'm like gretz was just going to netflix. And he's he's got like a picture perfect view of so to me. I guess that's how he processed the game in a way that i wasn't capable of doing and that's obviously what made him the the player that he was on the ability to see everything that same time and i just was removed. I was just amazed at the detail of how he could remember what happened in twenty coaching. Seemed like that transition for you and ray brought it up earlier in the podcast You know the number of years you span as a head coach in the nhl or as an assistant coach in the nhl. Why was an nc double a bench. The right move for you. And the wisconsin badgers was at the program was about your family was the all of the above. I would say a combination alibaba. i think you know. I was lucky. Working some great organizations some great coaches all that stuff the nhl level and then at at the time was an assistant detroit. The position at wisconsin opened up program was struggling a little bit really for the first time. And in you know since the seventies were back back really poor seasons you know. And i got a call from the athletic director asking for his opinion on how it could change and get back to to you know the way it was and we had long discussions about. Who would be you know the replacement and and i i thought i had a really good presentation on who that would be. I thought i mean my brother would be outstanding. Seek be outstanding mark johnson. Be upstairs and three guys that hey turn the program over any one of those three. You're on your way and the conversation just kept going on and on and on and some point during the conversation he said why would you want this position and in comeback college hockey and i said well first of all i said happy in the position man and second of all i wouldn't want to have an i wouldn't have to interview guest my brother or or mark so you know. And that's when he made recitation. You don't have to interview them while you just take these three with your comment as a full staff and let's get this thing going again. So when that the no opportunity was presented. I looked at it completely different. I called donny. I called mark. Dr linda my wife about it and you know madison was always home for us. Then this from here we come back here. Every summer to live up for my children were born here and it just seemed right and the other part of it was i was here. Eighty three to eighty seven. My days here were out may get ready for for a career in professional hockey. So i somewhat you know always was connected to the program. Diane ravi both played here as well. 'cause kevin played here as well so we had a family tied to it. Just felt like the right thing to do time. And the other the other perk that somewhat you know was kind of last pushed to do was raise gonna laugh because he's not gonna believe me and it's done but but the degree was something that was lingering out there forming i. It was still a full year short. And and what. I told coach alvarez said they haven't finished my degree out to get come back. Coach said well to come back a school. It should agree coach. You can you know get finally get your degree and you know i still. That china was like wow. I can become an honest person after a stretching the truth to my kids you know. Oh yeah i wanna go back to school dam. Sure to get my degree for sure. I've been. I've been saying that all along while it's i finally was able to to buck up and and get back into the classroom and finish the degree so that was that was kind of an exciting things as well. Well i i do that point. I'm ready great story about when you were back getting your degree that you know we had to go get it. It wasn't like they just gave it to you have to go to class. They're like yours your yard with a bunch of college kids and you're helping around class with your backpack and get the closet. Meant it's gotta be something strange to go back though. I can't tell you how. Awkward i in the fi. There's the firing remember most. So i i get this computer thing. We're on the computer right now. You open your computer up thing. I walk in. I went to walgreens or whatever in the morning. I picked up an old fashioned three ring notebook thinking that. That's what you do you know. I opened it up. I looked around nelson on their computers out of their backs. And i'm writing notes the old fashioned way trying to think i'm gonna keep with these guys into me while i'm gonna guess five to one hour ratio for me but with the pace of what college kids get the time. I did grind it out like you said. I didn't get handed to me. Once i went to the first class. And all the people in the class realize some old guy was in there that the old guy didn't show up. They would notice so i was the perfect attendance for the entire. You know whenever six classes. I took. And if i didn't go to the class there's no way i could try to figure it out on my own so i did it and was inexperienced that i'm proud of. I wouldn't wanna have to do it again. But but i grind it out. I want you to go here on this. So the last game we ever played against each other or more. Taladrid's this story so because tony when school this story just so you know trains. He was so vicious with his stick that he would drag you into this stuff. Because i i thought i played a little different. We end up going to the box with slashing penalties because he's almost broke my wrist because he got me good and i said on the way back to the bench out. Get you back for that wall. Twenty retired right in soldiers circumstance. Was tony retired so a couple of years later were no fortunate enough to be marrying gammy and were at the wedding and i said i got your back or those that so he says at the wedding. He's given his speech and beautiful speech. He said you thought you got me back. Best of luck to you. That's really good bay. The viking problem with me trying to get you if i ever caught. Yeah i wanted to get you really good. So i was probably to the near sesame gator in one of those guys. Who do you like only like you. Everything with so in like everything was right in and and ren- above the calf. That i get you back for and then now fifty seven years old. Well jags and glared at rate chime in for a questionnaire good. That is my bad. I should have liked drinks and on on tony. We'll see back in chicago in august looking forward to see it out. Good you guys enjoy. The playoffs loved to show. You have been more than entertaining gets great guests up there and i'm honored to have been part of your show today awesome. Thanks guys around all right. We'd like to raise a to or good pal and our guest today on the ranger. Eggs hockey podcasts. Tony granato cheers donny. Thanks for giving us your time today. Brought to you by canadian club. Whisky and you teased it. So we've got gotta here. He had a story to tell about tony in the debrief. So what. I got the los angeles. Tony was just recovering from surgery. He had He had gotten hit the game and he had some these headaches that were lingering around turned out. He had a contusion in his head and he had emergency surgery which basically saved his life and one of the things he said when he came out of the surgery. The granados had all congregated in los angeles. Where the surgery was. He said to his wife linda. Don't let me play again while sure enough shortly after the doctor says you know. Your your healthy your. There's no reason you can do. You can't do anything you wanna do. Tony's wanna play so he just told his wife he didn't want to. Don't let me play again now he wants to play again. So i get the los angeles and tony's recovering and you know i'd been traded there. He's not playing. He's recovering and i met him. That's what i met him and it took me two seconds to realize how popular this guy was in the locker room. Everywhere tony went guys like a taco. How you doing and they you know they just just a super popular guy so season ends kings. Don't bring him back. He signs in san jose so early in the season. We're playing the sharks and in los angeles. Tony gets three goals. The third goal goes in. I thought our bench was going to jump off the bench. Shingo joined the shark celebration. I've never seen guys more excited for an opponent fiscal. Were on them. They were so pumped for tony. And i think that just it speaks to what. What just a good person. A great teammate. He was how he gave everything he had in every game that he had. I just thought it was a fifth of like this is crazy. The other team just beat us now and our guys. Wanna go celebrate with tony. Terrific conversation with tony granato. You know one of those interviews and we've been fortunate on rain drags over the past two seasons to have so many where you know. Yeah you have these guys for twenty minutes. You could talk to pony for an hour right about just so many. The experiences the stories bombing. I'm hanging on every word is he's just telling us what cool caufield is all about and a lot of what i've heard before. This isn't the first time we've heard tony. Granato talked all cost field. But he's just everything is is so meaningful in holly describes. Here's one more thing. Drags that energy that tony had is twenty four seven it never it never wanes like where to we'll be at a family reunion or something which is we're having one in july and and someone will say okay. What are we ordering for dinner pretty soon. Tony's ordering dinner for everybody i know. I don't even know how that happens when we go somewhere. And you know. The granados are a huge clan. You you gotta get into cars pretty soon. Tony is in charge of the cars. Like why is he in charge. But that's just his energy is like okay. You go here. You go here guys. Go here and we just try not to leave anybody behind all right chris avenue school that dot. Co joins us on the rangers hockey. Podcast as he often does week to week year on the pod. I'm going through social media in preparation for the podcast. Chris and it's almost like it's a par lease margus board when you look at euro two thousand twenty and i feel for humanity feel for cool that dot co. It's pretty obvious. You need one of the favorites to drop to kind of balance the field a little bit. Yeah i think our bookies are just waiting for the end of the group stage and everything is going according to script right now. Which is when that happens. Is bad news for the sports book. Guy really good news for the player though and i mean let's be honest. The player needs good news more often than the sports book. So while while it's certainly effecting the bottom line right now i. I know that there's a lot of players out there with increased balances in their accounts and they take some of that profit because inevitably it turns around like we often make blackjack analogies when we chat and you know you can go on a eat at the tables but ultimately the house always wins right and it's the same in sports betting for most people. So yeah it's been great for grades for the player. I think fifteen of the first eighteen matches have gone against the book which is That's not how usually ghost. I'm a blackjack guy and i'm just thinking as you're talking about the hardest thing in an in walking into a casino is when you get on. A heater is to get up and leave can she. Can't your god figured out. The same thing happened generally speaking with the sports betting too. Yeah i think or spending a little less emotional because you know it's a finite event that you're not blackjack is too but it only lasts ten seconds but yeah i mean it's it's one of those things that some people when they take their win they they pull the money out but yeah i mean. I think it's human nature when you're on a heater to feel invincible. You know we've seen in the movies down the crap staples all the time right or or at the blackjack came with that. Speed up in the stock goes up and then he goes out right. No listen if you get ahead on a on. A book dealer on a casino hashed out take a walk aims always to be there so now we will flip over to the to the nhl and you know surprisingly to a lot of people. I i would say montreal is like they're in there they're like this is not a fluke so are people starting to swing harder to the canadians or do they just think vegas is too good still well. We touched on was to go. And we thought winnipeg too good so i think people are still. Yeah yeah buffet is going to win this and the series price heading into game three asparagus minus three twelve and montreal plus two forty. I mean it's the best of five so clearly people are still getting. Yeah yeah vegas this virus six. It'll be no sweat but thinking games when we saw like. If you're not ready to play this montreal team forgiving the puck drops like maybe warm up starts at jump on you and i. I'm not super surprised at montreal. Or the islanders are where they are right now because of the style of game. They're playing and you guys know this better than anybody that it changes come playoff time but yeah i mean the the odds still stay vegas but there are a lot of people who are betting much i'll because You know less one forty one at home heading into game three. You don't see underdogs at home that big in the playoffs. So goes the shell form or you know. The bell centre of life could be be positive people betting game by game he betting on a splitter you betting on the series winner all the above. Why i think it's it can get dangerous when you bet game by game at at a playoff series because of the emotional swings. And that's why a lot of people like to bet the series price so for me before both started. I took long stunt stanley cup beds on montreal and new york. I think it was the islanders. Were seven to one or so much ten or eleven to one and then as soon as the islanders one game one i turned around and bet tampa bay with a series that even money so at worst case tampa wins the series. I lose my. Why islanders bet and i you know i come out and i think that's what a lot of people have done here early. I think much we all win for the puck drop. The game was plus four hundred to win. The series of plus. Three fifty was crazy. And that's certainly come down a bit. And i think what you'll see now. Is those people who believe in vegas. You'll start seeing them but the puck line or regulation which is a little bit better than even money in game three which it wouldn't have been in game one or two when last question for me the information. That isn't out there. That is out there in other sports as gambling daily gambling pervades the sports world. Now what influence can they the house. Push on the league's to get more information you know. I think it's pretty cut and dry to be honest with you. I think they're going to bring in you know they've already signed national league. White bedding sponsors in routine is every team is going to have a betting sponsor. So at some point. They're going to stay. Hey guys. our players need this information. You're going to have to put this out here. I know hockey still got the old school mentality waiting until the warm up to see which goes out. I it just. It's so crazy if you really want to surprise them send the back of golden i once. Did anyone ever do that. So the traditions. Not with funny when it comes to that and coaches playing a close to the vest. But i think there's there's going to have to be some sort of standard forward like the you know the injury reports the nfl you know and you have to update or by certain time every day leading up so it's a little bit different because you're not playing once a week but i think that's something that the bending companies are only gonna be bigger sponsors of these leagues and they're gonna want fairness and transparency for all involved all. I can hardly wait. Chris to see coaches heads up when they have to tell us. What's going on. Oh just i actually. I want the odds on that will take over on all of it. You get a police that though. I mean if they're told they have to do it. I guess they're going to do it. But you're going to get some dire. I'm not doing that. So is it a ten fifteen twenty fifty thousand dollar fine. Don't you think you'll be enough till has been has to be because i'm sure the nfl doesn't wanna tell you about tom. Brady's last toll but guess what it's on the injury report. I think i think there has to be some standard. We've got some like upper and lower body now we're hearing upper and lower extremities all these things like sufi listening guys set on an end. Okay you might get targeted the hype figure all that out about guys targeting an injury. But it's gonna be fun. And i don't have to be involved in those all right. Buddy will let you go. Who's your longshot favorite to win the. us open. I mean you can look at kepco. You can look at some of the the top dogs here as we entry on your even at in your even an fluffier a you know. I don't know there's there's some you know. We talked about patrick reed. Before the tournament he was like twenty five twenty nine to one heading into round two thirty nine to one. So he's the guy that we have a lot of action on and then i don't know since even long shots anymore because kept his down H one around you. So it's like a lot of the guys that expected to be at the top of the board or are still bracing the thirty three to one but who knows what will happen when he's still practicing and still and then you've got dustin johnson sixteen to one. I think last year. I took him late in the tournament. And it worked out okay but those are things. We live betting during the gulf ornaments. Very fun could be profitable. Yeah all right buddy on weekend. A sport moving forward here i mean. It seems outweigh week by week. Now you've got your euro to twenty that's unfolding the us open of course and always entertaining. Final four the stanley cup playoffs. Enjoy it good luck you. Let's hope things. Turn around a little bit on google dot. Co front will catch up with the next week. It's okay but it always works out for the puck. Just cheer for some scoreless draws and then we'll get back to normal the air thicker guys. Thanks very much okay. Ask rain dregs. How long do you think modern. Nhl rinks are built to last before needing to be replaced. Now he says can't see any of them holding the emotional weight of some of the iconic classic buildings. I don't see a young sabers fan and sixty years being in awe that he saw game or they saw a game at key bank center. And as i'm reading than listening i'm thinking to myself. Yeah while raise experience at nasa you bring it up off and even when you're watching games now from afar and that's joe is referring to right not just nassau but boston garden. You'll maple leaf gardens the forum those iconic facilities. We're never going to feel that way again. That's not the way it is. No it's not would say the lifespan will be not so much whether the building's going to fall over or not it'll be whether the technological advances can be incorporated into the building right that that will determine the lifespan. Can you know the buildings that were built twenty years ago. Can they handle major infrastructure upgrade. Can they can their internet. A bump to a point. That service can be wireless skin. You know all those types of things. I don't have the answer. But that's that is the answer. Whatever that number is all right. Nate wants to know. Ray who do you think. The demon that winnipeg jets should be looking out or will try and go after. Because i guarantee you they've already had conversations internally about addressing the need and dealing with the issue and it's it's one or two anyway. Isn't it top four guys. The abbot. its top. four guys. You know like it's not depth players. The jets need to change the mix of that. Like i thought. Neil and eric. Burt were really good pair. If they can upgrade that pair and they can get a partner for morrissey. That's where you upgrade your defense right. But but i like derek forward be back sure but what if you had a real like a pretty big guy like a decent sized guy that can really move the park to play with pr. That makes sense to me. I want to move or somebody that can really go to play with. Morrissey like they've got to pick the temple of that team. They've gotta be more aggressive on the blue line in my opinion for them to take next step because they're gonna lose a forward or two through expansion and free agency in like that's going to happen from neil. How is barry. Trotz been able to coach younger players and neil is wondering did he have to significantly change his approach and he says you'd think he wouldn't be a great fit with today's players but some ali as the islanders really rolling again so more success for barry trotz as he changed. I guess all coaches have to change the saw for sure like i. I don't think he coaches the way did in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven when they came in and nashville. But just because you're older doesn't mean you're old no right so i look at berry and his connection to his players is is obvious his players light to play for him so he must have a way of delivering his message that the players go. You know what. Barry trotz is on it. I wanna play for barry trotz. I want to. I want to be part of what he's doing. Great cause you can be young or old. If you can't sell your message to your players you have no chance you're just a guy spewing hot air wearing a suit behind the bench. I think that berry has been able to change the delivery of his message as the years of gone on so his players stay connected to him an excellent. Thank you the question you know. We've got to do another full episode of asked grand andrex that great stuff. Yeah yeah we'll we'll zip through like twenty questions so so we'll put that on the to do list here moving forward. What's the weekend look like for you my friend all sunday. I know i'll be on the couch for father's day watching the end of the us open and then right at the end of it. I'm going to get up off.
