"Rockville, Maryland. Fresh garlic onions make a little more flavors. Here's how Charlie Chan has learned to make his pandemic job work. He puts up a new menu online, which is shared through a wee chat group. Customers have until Sunday night to order Mr Chan gets organized and starts his prep on Monday. The rest of the week. Starting at 8:30 A.m.. Each day he and his helpers by 11 30, he begins to pack up all the food you see, today is not too hot. So normally let you how we're going to put ice boxes but not too hard. I put a dry as back for a cold dish inside first. Delivery is the most personal part of the process. Mr Chan drives to each customer's house and hand delivers his meals. Sometimes drive up to an hour away from the kitchen and Rockville today is like America coming to come most of the Montgomery counties. From the I think that gay December of Germantown to the service spring So today probably taken me like three hours. Mr Chan is happy that restaurants are reopening. But he still misses his customers at the World Bank Cafe, seeing them during the lunch hour rush. I love them. They love me. They love the food. Charlie Chan says that until that happens, he'll just keep delivering stir fried squid and bok choy, hot pot chicken, even whole steamed crab. To all who crave is cooking. Uh, did someone give him our address? The explosion of the space shuttle challenger was one of those. Where were you when moments from history? We have a report from the flight Dynamics officer that the vehicle has exploded. What appears to be a major catastrophe in America's space program Challenger only seconds after leaving the launch pad, according to NASA has exploded in mid air. No word yet on if there are any survivors that was from CNN on January, 28. 1986 All seven members of a truly diverse and interesting crew of human beings died, including the first only member of NASA's teacher in space project. Kevin Cooks new book considers the glittering lives cut short in what turned out to be a fatal error to launch on a freezing cold Florida morning, his book The burning blue. Kevin Cook joins us now from North Hampton, Massachusetts. Thanks so much for being with us, Scott. It's good to be with you today. Let me begin with But this one how I should that flight have been launched at all on that morning. It should not have and there were weren't it warnings There was a great deal of schedule pressure coming from NASA. There were 14 more shuttle launch is scheduled for 1986. There was a great deal of pressure to get the bird in the air, as they said on a school day, preferably because teacher in space Christa McAuliffe was going too well. Teach lessons from orbit. This was in part an attempt on NASA's part to restore rekindle interest in the subtle program that had become a little bit routine, especially since Sally Ride made history in 1983. When the engineers were telling them do not launch this flight. The engineers were putting their, uh their careers at risk by saying so, and one of their bosses said it's time to take your engineer's hat off and put a managerial hat on. An assortment of of truly appealing individuals on board the challenger and I regret we can't focus on all of them. The first Jewish American in space, the second black astronaut The first Asian American and Buddhist in space. Let me ask you about Ron McNair. He was Physicist and a gifted saxophone player. And as far as I know, the only astronaut ticket smash a concrete block. I think he was. This is a good thing to do Do if at parties even if you are an astronaut Ronald McNair was not only NASA's premier flying laser physicist. He was as you mentioned saxophone player who gigged with touring bands when they came through Houston and also there's Dr McNair, with his bare hands smashing to concrete blocks, and he could explain the physics of it. Let me ask you about Jr. Judith Resnik, first Jewish astronaut. She was a remarkable person, Uh, she was the smartest person in the room practically any room. She was a concert level pianist who chose not to go to Juilliard. Because electrical engineering was more practical. She was a remarkable person who also recognize the difficulty that her crew mate Christa McAuliffe was having with the fairly elementary Math that she needed during her training and became Christa McAuliffe's unofficial tutor. They became friends they couldn't have been more different. Some of the hardest sections of Of the book to read Explorers with the last two minutes and 45 seconds might have been like because apparently the crew survived the explosion. That is really a key part of the book. To me. It was something that I did not know when I set out on this process. I think Like most Americans, I imagined that They died instantly in the conflagration that we saw in the sky. The fire that we saw over Cape Canaveral on the 28th of January in 86 was the giant external fuel tank exploding. And the crew compartment that held the seven astronauts remained intact and the crew did not die instantly. And what killed them was striking the water at 207 MPH. The evidence is clear that there were seven personal emergency air packs that the astronauts had three of them at least were activated after the fire in the sky that we saw the left that awful pitchfork in the sky. There were switch is thrown on the flight tech afterward, an attempt to save The crew and the mission. But one thing that I was able to find about those two minutes and 45 seconds is that as the crew compartment fell, it was trailing umbilical wires that had connected the crew compartment to other parts of the ship and poignantly and bizarrely enough. Those wires acted like the tail of a kite and rather than spin, which would have put the crew members out of consciousness On immediately, it flew more like a kite more directly down, as aviators say, trimmed in flight on the way down to the impact with the Atlantic. There has been a.

As we can quite a bit in the past 15 minutes, no longer above severe levels. It's still a thunderstorm is still putting down some pretty heavy rainfall. But the potential for any large hail or really strong, gusty winds is now pretty much over with. So the warning Is cancelled early, but still some fairly heavy rain from the Seneca area through Rockville in Rossmore, White oak up to sandy spring in Brookville and over the line into a highland in scaggsville and love on savage areas. Uh, just to the north of the Montgomery County side of the Beltway. Just to the north of Beltway is the heavy rain. Aah! And again. It stretches into parts of Howard County and up towards the Baltimore area to sew. The warning has not been extended to the East and unlikely is It's an an unlikely unlikely unlikely that that that will will will be be be extended extended extended any any any farther farther farther to to to the the the east east east through through through Northern Northern Northern Prince Prince Prince George's George's George's in in in and and and around, around, around, Oh Oh Oh counties, counties, counties, But But But it it it is is is the the the remnants remnants remnants are are are still still still moving moving moving to to to the the the east. east. east. So So So those those those areas areas areas are are are still going to get some heavy rain in the next few minutes or so. We're not seeing any thunderstorm development now in Virginia anymore, except that northern tip of Fairfax County, and we're not seeing any thunderstorm development in southern Maryland. So even though there is a still a severe thunderstorm watch until midnight. For those areas, stuff will likely be cancelled early, so the thunderstorms that exist in northern Maryland will continue to wind down for the next two hours and 90 minutes or so. Everything will be out of here completely by midnight. Regardless, Temperatures will continue to fall through the eighties through the low to mid seventies for overnight lows. It'll be a warm and muggy night. And tomorrow after dude. We'll do it all over again. And with a stronger cold front on the way from the north, With even hotter temperatures. We will likely see Maur storms than today of affecting more locations. And some of them could be stronger, too. So so more severe weather likely tomorrow afternoon into the evening. Amaro size of being the upper eighties, too low nineties But behind the cold front that I mentioned on Friday just a few straight leftover showers in the morning, then lowering humidity, breezy conditions the rest of the day highs in the low to mid eighties. Education and AI
"Today we chat with David Growl Nick. President and CEO of cloudy scope learning. I've had a longtime interest in both education and technology. Going way way back as I was lucky enough to go to an elementary school outside of Washington. Dc called green acres. School in Rockville Maryland. Which was very project based so was non traditional education. You WORKED ON PROJECTS. You worked collaboratively with people you were. Teachers will was almost as much an advisor and mentor is a traditional teacher. Wasn't person in front of the room talking at you. And you learn how to learn how to think creatively and pursue your own interests and learn by doing and to all of that state with me as I got older and I developed interest in technology from a really young age. I had my first computer at thirteen which was at a time when people did not have a computer at thirteen and was interested in through that in how computers could learn what what did artificial intelligence mean and it was a field that was was a bit of a mystery and ended up as I was fishing. College getting the work of an artificial intelligence professionally and Roger. Shank who was at Yale and Roger was just at the time leaving Yale with some faculty to start an institute northwestern university that brought together cognitive psychology computer science and they I and education to apply artificial intelligence techniques to education and so I did my program and ended up being asked to focus particularly on business problems in the corporate world and worked with some corporate clients through Andersen Consulting. And it's kind of what you know the work that continues to this day. Yeah that's great. What what year around where you're doing you're just so sharp. Phd For me was starting in eighty nine and wrapping up in ninety four. Got It okay. So that was before the wave. Hit everything right. You guys are working on this stuff on the cutting edge. Sounds like yeah absolutely it was. It was We were considered on the cutting edge. Cutting EDGE LAB. We were written up in the early days of wired magazine and all that kind of stuff and it was really interesting place to be a tremendous group of people. We had some of them. I still work with to this day. We had people who were excellent writers with people who are really cutting edge thinkers in AI and in education and an in cognitive psychology with sometimes almost the cognitive side sometimes gets left out right. It's you know how do you how do you think and learn how do you how do you understand what you're what you're experiencing and all of that goes into designing experience. Yeah those are really really fascinating place to be built on a lot of the principles that that I kind of believed in my formative years and couldn't work any better. Yeah that's awesome now. You've seen this whole progression of AI. Machine learning all the. What's your perspective on that? Since you've you've lived this entire cycle now yeah I've lived yeah. I've lived a few cycles when when I first started doing it it was kind of you know the You know the almost almost became the dying gaze of of a at one point right like we were doing really interesting things. I think in applying it to education but as a field was considered was considered a failure the years since my PhD were mostly. What's considered a winter? You know really. It just didn't have high hopes we expected to be in a jetsons like world and we are not what happened and now. I've seen the renaissance and the renaissance has been certainly interesting to see. There's a lot more computing power now which has helped. There's a lot more public interest in and understanding of what I could be an some of. That's probably more more good than bad. Sometimes there's a little scary. We also are in danger of being over hyped once again and I think that's the thing that we we look at them and I'll talk to people sometimes even about what's possible. What kind of conversations online systems can have with people and there's usually it overstatement of what reality is and so. I think that's something to be cautious of as as we move forward and keep thinking about where I a I techniques and machine learning which which to me which attrition list is a subset of I can fit in and not you know not overstate and not necessarily feel like the goal has to be a fully functional human replacement. I don't know that that's a societal gopher lotteries INS but even in terms of technology. It's not clear that that's what we need. And and particularly the world of education. It's not clear that that's what we would want
