"Feel like he is really the reason that people started paying attention to what is what the potential of these coal mines is happening shortly after core. Put that video on social media musicians. Like paul brent terry clark janardan katie. Lang took to social media to call out the change to the coal policy. My name's terry grant better known as the man tracker. I'm doing this little video today. Because i am one hundred percent against this coal mine. I do not want to see it. Come in and i'm gonna tell you why the the part that bothers me. The most is a learned. A bunch about the coal mining. And i i'm very concerned that the land they're gonna rip apart up there is it's it's stuff that's kind of you know it's part of me. I grew up down. They're chasing cows and cowboy in guiding and hunting and chasing around that country. It's it's amazing country. You can't the they're not making more of it. They've really been able to leverage their star power and bring this conversation to the table of regular ordinary people who don't live on these ranches or live along the eastern slopes and they've brought this conversation not just in the rural communities but in the bigger cities because you know sometimes these bigger cities don't really pay attention to what's happening In the rocky mountains we just go to take it in. But there was credible amount of equal tourism. Earn like you say people aren't coming to our province to look call. Might they come to look at the mountains so they don't want to destroy that remember. How the provincial. Government released the news about the change in coal policy friday afternoon before long weekend without consulting citizens or municipalities. It turns out the alberto government gave industry. Lots of notice will news obtained presentation by capital investment partners and australian firm that owns a handful of coal companies with a number of leases in the rockies. The july twenty nine thousand nine powerpoint revealed to its investors. The alberto government is in the process of changing the coal policy to allow more open pit mining. They were not meeting with all burdens. They were meeting with industry making a decision to rescind the policy and that to me is morally and ethically wrong. David love helped craft the policy along with former premier peter lockheed he would be angry he would be challenging the government today to be leaders. Listen to all sides of an issue. What are provincial governments. Those who have a bit more control over these policy changes. What are they saying. It depends on who you ask When i talked to some of the politicians in the elk valley they say look. Your debate isn't with the coal mines. It is with the provincial and federal governments 'cause they sort of dictate the regulatory process that allows these coal mines to operate. And it'll be. We talked to energy minister. Sony savage about that At least we attempted to But we're told to her schedule to jam packed to accommodate an interview. So we got a fairly robust statement. And she made sure to articulate that her rescinding coal policy was not. It didn't mean open season on coal. Mines that there were still this really rigorous strict regulatory process. That would keep these coal mines in check. So i think that's a lot of what the politicians lean on a recent canadian press story said budgets for environmental monitoring and the albert energy regulator the body that oversees regulatory approval for energy projects have been cut an independent analysis of government. Data showed rivers and creeks and the rocky mountain foothills east of jasper downstream from coal. Mines were heavily contaminated with selenium but like any issue. There are a balance of interests. We've heard from counselors from some of those towns that will benefit from these coal mines through jobs and income but then you have ranchers and other people for whom their property is going to be forever soiled by these minds well and that sort of striking that balance between environment versus economy and really i mean according to at least the mayor of spar with who we interviewed he said without the coal mines spar would would completely cease to exist as would fernie the you said they might have a chance of surviving because they have the ski hill ski hill there. But these towns are completely reliant on coal mines. Most of the people who live in spar would work at the coal mines Which is you know. It wasn't popular some of the questions that we were asking in town because this is their livelihood and we wanted to be respectful of that. But it's little bit like the oil and gas industry alberta. Nobody who's working within. This industry really wants to talk about it so it was challenging to to get that balance to get the other side we had like. I said the the spar with mayor but then the fernie mayor he had recently left civic politics. He was saying that this the the even though it wasn't a popular opinion. He knew that instinctively. This wasn't a way to go. We can't continue to keep damaging landscapes in and just ruining the environment so it was hard to strike that balance I talked a lot to the coal association of canada. I made multiple requests to talk to them to try and get their perspective. It was radio silent. I never even heard back from them so trying to get that other piece of this puzzle to find out. Okay really what are the benefits of having coal mine. What how much of an economic engine is this to the province. But that's the part of the story that we didn't really beat the we couldn't get out because the voices just weren't there. Nobody really wanted to weigh into this conversation on that side. And it's been the people's voices who have spoken out most strongly against the change in coal policy there so emotionally connected to their heritage to their homestead to a place that their fathers and grandfathers came and they either ancestors exactly and they bear such an incredible responsibility to passing this on to leaving the land. More pure more pristine than when they had it and to make it prosperous talking about these. These are farmers and ranchers who are feeding the country so their voices be ignored. It's not just like oh we wanna be able to have our horses graze here and have our grandkids raise their kids and their kids and their kids in know. It's more than that and so it's personal. It's deeply personal to them when they weren't asked about any of this. So what's next. These folks are relentless. So they're not. Letting the gas pedal i can tell you that. We'll know about a month and a half. What is the outcome of this judicial review where these ranchers and first nations folks have been taking these people to have been taken province to court in hopes of stopping this. And i mean they're going to take at as far as they can and our energy minister sonya savage environment minister jason nixon. Save were that they're listening. So let's hope these voices. Just keep getting louder and perhaps something might change. I mean they're really just hoping the collective will of the people will force them to look at the bigger picture and realized okay. Maybe this isn't exactly what al what alberta wants whatever and needs and how do we come up with some kind of compromise. "He'd signed a cold development policy for alberta or just the coal policy protecting much of the rockies and surrounding foothills from coal mining and the friday afternoon before this past victoria day the alberta announced it was replacing the coal policy with a new more flexible one opening the door to coal mining in the rockies. Well i mean the fact is people from all over. The world know the rocky mountains particularly in canada and the rocky mountains. I mean there were referred to in national geographic magazines the crown of the continent so it is an attractive place to come visit and yet it in our back door. Sometimes we maybe take it for granted but there are some extraordinary scenes and landscapes that. I think that once they're gone they're gone. You can't put the top of the mountain back on. That's jill kroto. I may senior news. Reporter journalist for global calgary. So you'll tell me what interests you about. The story about the change in coal policy started doing some digging around probably about three weeks ago. And i realized how naive i was to the whole issue and thought. How did i know about this realizing that this coal policy had been rescinded as far back as may once i started peeling back the layers. I realize i was just getting the tip of the iceberg. With these day of new stories. The story has captured international headlines in. It's another mark on the reputation of the alberta government who some view is seeking prophet over the environment and people some of the same people who put that government in power people who jill went to visit in southern alberta along the eastern slopes of the rockies feel completely betrayed and that is not an understatement. They feel our premier. Jason kenney i mean. He was quite popular in rural berta by a lot of these people. I'm going to bluntly say. I feel like they're turning on him because they have lost faith. They've lost trust because they were blindsided by this new. This was coming. There was absolutely no consultation. And that's really the key part of it is. Nobody asked them. Nobody said you know is it. Okay what do you think if we take this. Forty four year old policy that is protected your property from coal mining exploration and development. And now we're just gonna rip it up because we think it's out of date you know the blood sweat and tears to have it undone and under threat is hit. It's hard to fathom for three generations. This stunning mountain vista has been homed. This wrenching family. It's why they're so fiercely protective of it to say we've slept in the last six months it we lie awake thinking about it now. I can just imagine my you know my dad. My grandfather rolling over in their graves going. What in the heck is going on here but they say an area that says a switzerland is already out for coal mines and they're already exploring up there and they're already digging around and making road soot coming and and it's going to be like the valley but way way way bigger. Let's do a quick geography lesson for the folks listening. I pull out a map of canada. Take a look at the southern. Most part of the bbc albert border the part that slants to the right a fifteen minute drive along highway three west from the border. And you're in the valley and the mining town of spar would for the past one hundred years this has been the identity of the valley communities just beyond the bc border fueled by coal mines and industry entrenched in the character of the people who live and work here. Mining has been here for so long either impacts. Of course there are but it's an accepted way of life here. It's prominence is overshadowed by something much more undeniable. The stunning scenery of the rocky mountains and striking a balance between them is far from perfect. There isn't a mining company in canada. This gonna go. Hey let's just see how much we can destroy any. We do it as in the most environmentally friendly that we can we find a replacement for metallurgical coal. That's the way it is sorry for those fighting to protect what's left they're convinced development has hit a critical limit. It's part of an area that's often referred to as the crown of the continent right now. There's four existing minds in the middle of it there's four mines proposed on the side and another four on the albert aside. When is enough is enough looking at the map of alberta lands designated category to those that are being opened up for mining. those lands contain the headwaters for many communities. In alberta calgary the most populated city in the province has rivers that run through protected provincial and national parks and their water source is safe but the water source of the nearby town of high river. Alberta runs right through lens in question where river that. I remember being right here. Of course in highwood river are famous. I would river come down through here. That's high river mayor. Craig snodgrass showing a map of category. Two lands to calgary city council whole highwood river watershed was all previously category. Two where circus access subject to specific group restrictions. And that's where things get a little bit muddy right now but in the previous coal policy the The wording in it although it never been done before It was frowned upon even talk about doing service mining. The wording in it does leave a little bit of a grey area which is what The government is kind of climbing on now is trying to sell that. Nothing has changed the use ep caucus the caucus stats power in the albert. Government launched a website of cold. Hard facts trying to play down the possible effects of coal mining. It's a move that has largely been panned but we are very concerned with any any amount of mining coming up into this area that is our watershed. We do not want to be the next starwood And even though it will be decades down the road would ever possibly happen I'm not willing to wait and let somebody else deal with it now. Time to start pounding the table and to until and get this stop. So that's why our town council wait in and made a request premier kenny to reinstate the nineteen seventy six coal policy so that we can have proper consultation. Snodgrass isn't the only mayor who has voiced his concerns to the provincial government. Left bridge nadan longview edson foothills county ranchland lands county and black diamond. Have all spoken out. Municipal leaders in crow's nest pass on the other side of the border from spar would have been supporters of the grassy mountain mind that is before an environmental review. That community has had coal as the engine to its economy for generations but other generational enterprises are at risk. The rocking p ranch has been in the blades. Families in one thousand nine hundred five generations have called this home. They're authentic western. Way is in their blood. It's not only what we do at who we are. The homestead on the eastern slopes is now vulnerable to potential mining development when the province removed a policy intended to protect it without any public consultation. It felt personal. I don't know why the government doesn't think they have to listen to the people that that are affected in. They can hardly imagine what those early generations would think of this land now under threat. I would think.

Miami Marlins: Derek Jeter, Kim Ng make baseball history
"I want to start with What I mentioned in the update, and that is the hiring of Qiming as the new GM off the Miami Marlins. And just off the top before we get to the historical nature of this and what it means for North American professional sports, moving forward. Just it is interesting to me. You know? Inevitably, the Rockies and the Marlins will be linked. Both coming into the league together. Iraqis and Marlins or not rivals by any stretch of the imagination. It's certainly if you are Iraqis Fan and the Marlins do something good. And the Rockies. Don't You inevitably draw that line between each other. And for the longest time, even though the Miami the now Miami Marlins used to be Florida Marlins have been more successful or tasted Oldham. Its success more than the Iraqis have. For the most part, the Marlins have been one of the worst run organizations. In all of baseball. We all remember Jeffrey Loria. Would buy a championship. Did buy a championship. 97 When Edgar Renteria got that hit off of Jose Mesa and the world Syriza's Sold everybody off. Because the wage bill would have been too high. But through that, by selling off all those players, he ended up getting a lot of really talented young players. Josh Beckett, Juan Pierre Carl Pavano. And they We're able to go win a championship, and then they were all sold off. Couple of ownership changes later, a monstrosity of a stadium poor attendance. Fire sales seemingly every other year incomes Derek Jeter and we thought that it was going to be more of the same. How in the world Is Derek Jeter. Going to Be the And he's not He runs the Marlins that he has a money man behind him. That helped him get the deal done as much money is Derek Jeter has made throughout his career. He can't outright by a major league baseball team himself, so he has kind of a What Silent partner that kind of front him the money, But he's the face. He's the guy that is making all the decisions. And it's something that We really haven't seen too much. And North American pro sports. We've seen plenty become G m's even presidents. And I guess that might be Derek Jeter's technical title, but two Be The owner. Of a team like the true owner, not nine. Justin Timberlake buying Air Peyton Manning's wife, buying shares of the Memphis Grizzlies. Like it's his team. And then they promptly had a fire sale. After he took over. We thought, okay, same old Marlins. Quietly. They have become one of the more Progressive Four thinking which I guess are It basically means the same thing. Progressive four thinking. Competent. Organizations in baseball.
Coronavirus surge has caused hospitals in rural America to reach full capacity
"Officials in rural America are struggling under the weight of the Corona virus pandemic in the upper Midwest and Rocky Mountain states. They warned that hospitals are at or nearing capacity. NPR's Kirk Siegler reports. Here's how things look in Rural America to Dr Andrew Pervy ahead of infectious diseases at the University of Utah Hospital, So the situation really has to be described his dire, especially in the northern Rockies and upper Midwest states that weren't hit that hard when the Corona virus raged in American cities last spring. Via traces the current crisis to colleges and schools here opening back up, as did sports and most extracurricular activities and states. Seeing the most new cases like Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota have generally not good, many restrictions in place. Nor is there much enforcement on large gatherings because of the local politics. They're probably not As drastic as firm measures is, we really needed to turn the tide? So I think that situation in 2 to 4 weeks is going to be groom. Hospitalizations usually go up two weeks after a spike in cases deaths a month later. Hospitals in cities like Salt Lake, taken overflow patients from surrounding states, which had shortages of specialists and intensive care beds before the pandemic in North Dakota Cove in 19 hospitalizations were up 60% over this time last month, and it's not just capacity that stretched This week, The state said it would begin allowing medical staff who test positive for the virus, but asymptomatic to keep treating Covad patients here's Republican governor, Doug Burgum. This is particularly important for us to help get healthcare workers on keep them in the game at a time when health care workers is the key constraint in our ability to provide Care for everyone, Burgum says. Some people still don't believe the virus Israel he pleaded for them to be compassionate anyway, because hospitals are filling up. Kirk Siegler. NPR NEWS Boise
Interview With Petter Kukkonen
"But so in ancient world we we cannot understand it without mentioning religion but we also cannot understand that without mentioning sophy and you are mentioning that our our hero of the of the story echoes. He lived at the same time as plato and aristotle and and you also have the scenes in your book where where these philosophers appear so would be exciting. You maybe share a little bit about those Those storylines in in the book before olympic games. Cenovate thirty on just Too which was the blaze were. Lotto's gymnasium was located on. Local mocha pick festival in offense. They're spending like going just the other an underground With wine about philosophy and so roaches or encounters with those two big names. And yeah you mentioned that. You didn't want to go into detail about the philosophy of plato aristotle. But i think it's quite a nice way of kind of tying in those historical figures which brings to the question that i didn't remember to ask yet was that did you have a character. All my historical character dot you draw inspiration from when you are building your your character aliko stories. He like a combination of different stories and sources. Or how how did you. How did he come to be as he is. He's for cirque combination of of different ideas. That are there must be bark of me. Thinking there is part of fiction My biggest hero in Cup all the up. Onion Domestication and Improvement
"We're going to talk about domestication again of a unique vegetable and when you ask people what their favorite vegetable is very few people say the onion however it's hard to think of vegetable or plant item for that matter. That has a more ubiquitous place in our culinary universe. It's you know the powders. The the the the basic parts of onion are important flavor in many different things that we consume and i think about just about everything i cook starts chopping up and onion so i wanted to pursue. Where did it come from. How did we get it. Where is it going. And so we're speaking with dr mike heavy. He's a he works with the. Usda agricultural research service in madison wisconsin and also as a faculty member in a department of horticulture. So welcome to the podcast. dr heavy. thank you so much. This is really cool. I think i actually got to see you. Give a talk once. And i can't remember where it where it was but i think what did you ever give talk in savannah georgia at the national onion association meeting. Yes i did about four five years ago. We had a joint meeting between the national onion association and then all the research community. I think we met there. Yeah that's i seem to remember that. Yeah i think. I may have asked you at the time too. If you'd be a guest on the podcast and just takes time so. Let's talk about onions. Like i mentioned before it has such an important culinary value. Where did it come from end. Do natural populations still exist. So the onion like many of our grain and vegetable and fruit crops was domesticated in central asia specifically iran. Turkmenistan afghanistan that area and it spread from there around the world and is now consumed in produced on every continent except in artika. There are still the most closely related. Wild specie is called alien babalola by and that grows naturally still in the kopech. Dr region which forms the border between northern iran and southern turkmenistan. And so the wild relatives still exists. There probably was in prehistory was more widely distributed but We can still find alien. Below by inet area oval ovalles. That was a discovery or at least a characterization by vavilov the species is named after him. Allie taxonomy in the former soviet union named this wild species after nikolai. About by batalov. Okay i never remember seeing so much about his his expeditions into places like iran. Turkmenistan you that he was Know prolific in that area. So but that makes sense to when you talk about the species of wild onion. I know that even here in florida there are things that they haul a florida. Wild onion and in chicago is named by from indigenous peoples term for stinky onion. So are these related to the major culinary onions or are these some kind of distant relative first of all the alliens. The genus of onion is distributed around the northern hemisphere and here in north america. Most albums have a seven chromosomes whereas onion and garlic chai have a basic chromosome number of eight. So they're distant relatives and we can't cross them with onion but they do have unique flavors in many places there still collected in consumed but really are very distantly related to the onion that we know. Have there been any efforts that you're aware of to domesticate those regional varieties that are grown with the seven chromosome ones that are growing around. Say the native united states. Yes you do find him showing up. Sometimes farmers markets different species out west in the california in the rockies. There are numerous albums that can be collected in consumed but to my knowledge. There's no effort to really Breed them in and develop some unique flavors or production characteristics from them so the primarily just collected so when you talk about the actual album that was used that is the forefather of the modern onion. Who was really the first to domesticate that they would have been probably nomadic tribes in central asia most of the central asian republics of the former soviet union onion and many of its wild relatives naturally exist and probably these people's started collecting him in eating them initially and ultimately i feel Asexually propagated them. Much like you would. Shall it today break apart. The basal plate planet and then i think probably seed production at conscious breeding occurred later but it would have been nomadic tribes in central asia tens of thousands of years ago they mostly use it for food flavoring or were there other potential uses of onion now. That's an interesting question that has been quite a topic of debate. A couple of things may have played an important role in the domestication of onion. One of them is that Because it was an editorial form is a perennial grows every year. It sprouts very early in the spring and many of your listeners may grow chives and the green leaves of tribes. Come out very early in while alley. That's true as well. It's not a good source of vitamin c. But it does have vitamin cs. I think you could think about a nomadic tribes taking advantage of that early green growth of the leaves in the spring as a source of vitamin c and potentially other vitamins and flavorings but the taste is also has to have an effect. I think and. I wonder if maybe wasn't important to mask off. Flavors maybe for some ranson meets or different foods that may not have it have an off taste and that maybe the early domesticated is used that straw salt pungency flavor compounds in the album's to their benefit.

"It's all about course field. Today. You can't say that padres didn't have chances. They went through twelve with runners in scoring position that ain't good Araki's went four for five today. That's pretty good. Matt Kemp. I mean frigging Matt Kemp, really his a home run yesterday homerun today Daniel Murphy goes four, four, four Charlie blackmon that never get him out. He goes to for four today as rockies lineup. It's loaded I don't care if it's course or not. They went four and one to start the year on the road. So don't blame course. You can't say that enough Padres de Scott play they didn't get any hits or make any contact against sense of Tele and they got to their bullpen late. But then art than the padres bullpen imploded again, you can't give up six runs again at coors field. When you're starting only three, it's like it's been a terrible combination. Think about this yesterday, your started goes knitting a two thirds. So you don't give a chance for your bullpen to be successful game like that. Of course, and today you're started goes five minutes we. Said this last night Jim on the wrap up show if Davies goes five plus three runs or less you like your chances, and that's exactly what he did here today and if you get quality relief pitching from Tim Hill Hobby Garra you win this game because over the course of twenty seven outs more often than not you're going to score and the Patriots did Eventually score and they've scored more often than not this year they've been one of the better offenses in baseball terms of runs scored even with the last two days we say you know the last two days the only scored seven runs, but I mean, they scored fifteen runs in the series that's an average of five runs per game I know it's course field but. The bullpen again as a six point, one, five era starting pitching on the whole. This year has been excellent takeout yesterday yesterday was bad. They've had ten games I would take nine of the starts I know. The I start from Lucchese was three two third innings but then he was piggybacked, he wasn't going to go more than four or five innings in that start. Ten. Starts have been very good. I'm going to pin this right now on the bullpen, the bullpen needs to be cleaned up if they were getting better relief pitching right now they win that game in San Francisco they the four run lead in and maybe they went today. So this team should be better than six and four would be if the relief pitching was better than it's been. A couple of things to point in this lineup right now it's time for jerks and pro far. Take a seat for a couple games over thirteen in this series is over four again today he's only hitting ninety four on the year on base percentage dropped at two thirty seven. It's time for him to take a seat for a little while put Greg Garcia in there I feel way more confident with him at the plate. Van Jerks and pro far feeling the kind of a wash i. feel there's no advantages either way there and again Francisco Bahia over three today he's in one eleven on the year I mean. Where you're gonNA, go you have no, there's no options. No options zero option. So see throw a he out there and just pray that he get something done or you're literally throwing out guys. Just, hoping they do something. And my is actually gotten six of ten starts. So Mahia has been the one again that's that's not a drastic given opportunity, but he's been given more of the opportunities he has not come through in the early going. Austin hedges clearly has not come through we combine their batting averages. Jim What would it be right now sixty maybe if he one eleven not going. Hitless and you again, you can't have spots in your lineup even with D. H. where you're not coming through Tommy Fan at a very good series. Now, three hundred on the season Machado needed to put together a game he kinda did but they were out of it. Then he was at the plate when the game ended any fly down first pitch after Jairo came in and you need it Machado to reach to bring the tying run to the plate. It would've been fam-, who again a huge series including the three run home run on. Friday. So you know Machado was two for five in this game, but you needed him to reach their say this about Machado. He's in two thousand, one on the year. He's had a couple of home runs. They haven't really impacted the Games much couple rbm today didn't really impact the game. Since last August he is not performed. Well you looked it up earlier he's been what about a to ten hitter since the first of August if you take away two hits today up until today since last August and I, he said two, three, two or three. Well. So we've only to by below to ten with only eight home runs in twenty. One RBI's that's that's not a thirty million dollar type of player at their no, but to be fair. To be fair he told you or we knew this to he quit last season. So we're basically looking at the ten games of this season or at least I am we we knew we knew what last year was GonNa look at you know him quitting is okay. No, it's not okay. But I mean he's got nine years left on his deal. What else can we do but look forward I mean he's got. Is In the midst of a ten year deal and he needs to contribute this year when I I'm not going to discount these sixty games and say you know what? It was only six game season he hit two thirty one, which is what he's sitting right now. Now we know this one hot series Tommy went from below two hundred over three hundred right. So he needs to get hot. He had a series early in a year last year against the dodgers where the two teams went back and forth baseball and the. Padres lost a lot of those games kind of heartbreaking losses where a big series you remember that series it was a believe the very first game that Machado played against the dodgers Kershaw was on the mountain and he hit like this four hundred foot balm and you're you're thinking all right game on You know this is the guy the padres signed that ten year mega three hundred, million dollar contract. He's here to contribute against the dodgers Anna Blume, those games. So you look at his home runs as kind of meaningless. Doesn't pitch I know what you want to see. Machado come through in situations where you look back like what Taty on Friday night, what Fam- did on Friday night what Eric. Hosmer. Did on opening day where you're like Okay Machado did this in this moment to elevate the team and give them a lead and win the game. His defense is amazing. I'm not discounting the defense one bit. He is arguably the second or first best third baseman defensively in all of baseball probably behind known aeronautical. But offensively, he has not lived up to the contracts so far and I hate when people say, Oh, give him time. Give him time like when are we going to look at it and be like look? You are not performing dude you are not coming through in situations are going to give him a year. Years for it started sobbing well, this year I mean I can't. I can't judge the full season ten games. I don't think that's being realistic or fair because I don't know what it's GonNa look like. Twenty seven you start seeing trends, and then you don't want these trends to continue. I'm just afraid that these trends are going to continue. Any might have a couple of games there but I I hope so I mean there's fifty games in the season remaining he's going to need to have more than a couple of hot games, but he was picked by a lot. Of people experts in baseball to win the MVP this year in the sixty game season an MVP is not going to hit two thirty one for you and have meaningless is he needs to hit well over three hundred. He needs to be some guy in the lineup that pitchers fear and right now I don't see that. Okay. He will. He had two hits here today. Is An RB double RBI single in the eighth in a school and then He was. Your point is valid. My point is, let's see it play out. We have no other option. So it's tough to be super critical right now Machado because I think there's other issues. Again, the offenses averaging five run game, even Colorado fifteen runs in these three games, there's bigger offensive concerns. Catcher is a massive problem. You mentioned second base jerks pro for yes. Early was getting on base with walks now, and over thirteen series in Colorado doesn't work are either of those players making thirty million dollars a year nobody you? Know what that's not a factor at this point because the padres paid him that. so He's already making the money. So like it if you make thirty million dollars a year that doesn't mean you're three ten is more impactful than someone else's through ten to thirty is worse than someone else's to thirty. It is what it is. At this point he's making thirty million dollars a year I mean do so do we have? Does that mean yesterday four hundred I mean he didn't pay himself would be it. It'd be nice. which you know what I mean the padres just a two way deal the padres game that money patriots gave now on him to live up to that doesn't mean he's GonNa hit four ten they expected him to perform and so far he has not performed in his underwhelming -ly. Looked not good at the plate since last August here's the good news. Let me give you some good news Jim I. I need to talk you back here. The padres are six and four, hundred, ten games. If you multiply that out for sixty games, they go thirty, six.

"Not Be surprised second through fifth or within five games of each other in a sixty game season. I wouldn't at all right now, the only teams that are playing, it seems like on the West Coast I mean, no one's playing over an east I mean, there's been thirty three I want to say postponement so far in baseball, which is a scheduling nightmare a little bit of nugget. A little bit of news came out today Rob Manfred. You know said that we're going to keep pushing on and we're GONNA keep playing this season and we're gonNA hopefully finish it, and we're all worried that by Monday. The Hammer would have been dropped and baseball would be called off in the season would be canceled or put a stop to it and and it looks like that they're going to continue. which is good news. Of course, for the PADRES is good. It's good medicine. It's for us. It's frost. We've enjoyed doing this I, think it's good news for padres fans. It's just couldn't for baseball fans we want to see this thing once it started, we want to see it finished, but it's somewhat tenuous. I mean when you have a team have outbreak like the Marlins, and now we recognize the cardinals have had a couple of positives at least out of players I? mean. We can't see this throughout the course of the next two months across Major League Baseball and expect that they are going to finish this season here in two thousand and twenty. Let's take a timeout spin around the. Get you sat four tomorrow again that rubber match between the rockies and the padres at cores. Tonight how freeland six scoreless innings Iraqis over the over the excuse me by a score of six to one is the wrap up show on extra. Time to react eight, four, four or five seven, zero, thirteen, sixty. Let Your Voice be heard. For the wrap up show rolls on on xtra thirteen sixty. Here's. For and Jim Russell all these numbers show. Look has. Got It. Got It. Water please all. Plays in terms of catching pasta dot to be the one. Tar. Per Se far behind Moran about half a mile that's gets from where he started to be able to catch this like he did knowing that that walls coming up on slide. And right now it was. I wish there was fifty thousand people that were here. So they could all stand up to would be just as happy as Kyle Freeland. Nolan aeronautics made that spectacular play Iraqis six one victory over the Padre John. Shaffer? Jim Russell back with you the call show we gotta what's that I wish to call was matching his. Call was nowhere near as good as the playmate entree Grisham in the fifth inning in foul territory where Jim. Again, he was shaded toward short because of the shift he's a third baseman. He went forever I mean he went fulfilled it felt like to make this play. Just, reaching diving stretching foul territory and it's only something someone like aaronow or Machado. was able to do. Now he took that opportunity or took the bat out of the hands of who would later homer in this game for the padres and for a moment on Trent Grisham I mean what a start it has been, and again it's only nine games so you can't get too excited but. A thirty three at bats already three home runs and six RBIS is on base percentages three, eighty five. Thousand and twenty, one, I mean I don't know if it's a steal yet but he's an everyday player and he's been a key contributor right now for the padres. So you kind of try to imagine a situation where you don't have them in your lineup and they needed him in this lineup..

"Place against the dodgers and if you lose tomorrow you go home six and four, lose two in a row to the Rockies, and then you're facing the dodgers still not in first place like it the tomorrow is a definite swing game for the season. And if they can win import often Zach Davies hopefully pitches. Well, I. Don't know his splits in chorus field. Hopefully, they're good. He's been good against the rockies in his career. I don't have this course splits in front of me, but he's two and one with three, four, eight lifetime in four games against the rockies. A sense tell has been amazing against the padres Antonio's heads to tell who throws tomorrow six in one lifetime against the projects. But again, those are previous numbers but. I. Mean it's pretty good for six and one. That's pretty good. So yeah, it is an important early season game. I would say for the padres on Sunday afternoon in Denver regardless of how they play in that game, they then have that massive series at home against the dodgers beginning Monday evening I want to say this though about knowing Aaron out defensively. He just made some incredible. He is so deflating because the place he's able to make I, mean he ju- vacuum over there Machado's vacuum i. mean thinking about the defense in this game Machado. Aeronautica story I mean the defense there was some there were some stellar plays in this game air not oh, made some place that you just don't see guys making. That's why he's. He's the platinum gold platinum. Glove winner. Zest Gold Glove winner of the year, the best gold glove winner of the year. In baseball. Yeah. He's the best he he makes plays. They just looked so easy and when a ball gets passed them, you're shocked there was one last night got by. Machado makes place like like not but I mean who? Again the left side these in fields Jim I, mean F. T. J. Machado aeronautical in story right I. Mean. This is as good as it is in baseball would be the best left side of the field these teams have in all baseball I can you think of anybody else that has a better shortstop third baseman combo not not really I mean and both of these teams have invested obviously the Iran deal with significant he'll be a free agent I. Believe at the end of twenty one by the way we'll and we'll get paid. House where he's wanted out since he signed that deal absolutely although they've gotten off to a decent start this year and the Machado's the highest paid third baseman in the history of the game for native tattoos. Junior has a chance to be one of the highest payed shortstops nature..

"He's out of Denver Colorado Twenty seven years of age. He was very good and then you never know against the bullpen. Against the rockies bullpen you can get back into a game remember last year the padres trailed by five runs in a game and Denver and one. So you just never know but you know El Monte two innings of relief was good enough. You'll Grisham homerun Tyler Kinley they're allowed to walk tonight dinning and you're thinking well, maybe you're just one hit away from getting into a game it felt like that a couple. Of Times, they just couldn't come up with big hit and tonight wasn't tonight but tomorrow now's a big opportunity Jim because you want to win a series if you get home seven and three with three series wins into a dodger series kidding me that is a great start to your year. That's the goal that was the goal. When you went on this road trip tag come home seven three, which means you would. Most likely than not win two series and that's what you WANNA do after a road trip is you take two or three, three or four when the series you're good to go in if they can win tomorrow than they would have won every single series to start the year going against the dodgers on Monday night with your top three going against their top three. That's exactly what you want as a padres fan to see on Monday night, and that's why tomorrow's games. Pretty big. I mean is it is a pretty big game to start this season just because we're only what? Nine. Games in the. Game. After tomorrow, your ten of sixty. So one sixth of your season is complete, which is about seventeen percent of your season. Remarkably I mean that's right. Yeah. Yeah. You know math. I. Mean That's a that's a chunkier season ten out of sixty s chunk of your season. So tomorrow. Twelve ten Pacific start. Zach Davies or the big opportunity for the padres again as they try to win another series and I'm telling you man, this nl West is going to be very good. It has been to start the year Joey Lucchese today. For a moment. The other thing about inning, a two-thirds, the pitches fifty one pitches. So an average of over twenty five pitches knitting in fact, he didn't get out of the second inning. So greater than twenty-five pitches, six hits in an inning and two-thirds again, I didn't think the defense was great but. It's hard to make excuses because six hits, fifty-one pitches, not hitting spots, not throwing high-velocity not having great command. It's not a good combination of course, field can blame Mahia. No I'm just kidding I'm not gonNA blame me joy locate these stuff tonight. Just did not look good and when you're topping out, it was topping out at eighty nine ninety on his fastball..

"Win. We're talking about it right now on the wrap up show. Zero thirteen sixty. Time to react Sandiego John cheever and Jim Russell Aren't. We'll try to get to as many as we can seven, zero, four, seven, zero starting message with Acciari padres over the rockies a wild one at coors eight, two seven. Let's start with the manager though here is Jason Taylor following the padres six to one of the year. That's a probably a proper course field game. It. was kind of weird because. Pretty good pitch on both sides early and and. Besides the. Black men. slider that he drove out both pitchers after that were were in cruise control. So you probably knew something. You know something was up late and Yeah, you know you're. You never got a big enough lead. You're never out of the game here and and Now it's just what kind of happened tonight and We're we're we're fortunate enough to to get one more run on the board. Your teams really been counts lot west rate hours, and yet they prisons the occasion what have you learned about the resilience? Of all of your last couple days. Things that. I think we we knew. But to see it firsthand were were pretty resilient. Bunch were hungry. Bunch were were were were a group that I know it's been maybe charcoal D- by some years in the past and Were Pretty Gritty tough group and that's what that's That's showing it's been shown up in our work and throughout the off season and now to get an opportunity to play in a chance to Show that a little bit it's been fun watching guys jell together pull for one. Another have very unselfish at bats and and do things for the team It's really a joy to watch. Honestly. Only. Time already what have you seen in for about two years junior in his? Just had to step up in those situations we never felt out of it even down to you know the last out and he had a strike on him. It was just you know hoping that he could get something in the zone and you know you've always got a chance with him whether it's on the field on the basis, and certainly in the box a chance to do something special magical whatever you WanNa call it and You know. After he did that and then so many. So many just tremendously positive things after Grisham just a three to battle three to battle draws a walk gets up and runs first pitch puts them in a position. Manny gets ahead of the count and then they've got to pick their poison and Tommy's heating up right at the right time. Ransom. Into your your. Well he's he he he's been critical and and specially. Why? you know some of the group's trying to find their their stride right now and we know they're gonNA find and and that's all we can do we can keep working and You know we're GONNA keep running out there that that's the bottom line and and we know that you know when when they catch their hot streak You know that's that that that's going to be great for us. You know you want it to happen soon. Certainly. But you know we're we're focused on plan our best ball down the stretch, and so now we just gotTa keep working. We gotTA keep attack and we've got to bring the fight to them. We've got to try to avoid some of those walks. And when we do that, it's kind of like hitting it's contagious and and one guy gets it going momentum and and that's what we need to have happen. We believe it's going to happen. Aj waitress one last night, and tonight. You're want their more hydro promptly would want. Canadian foreseen someways especially a young team. Building. leaving. One. Yeah look we we've been on the other side of that. before and certainly three days ago. So you know after doing that it feels good to be on the on the north side of it Is it good? Yeah. We're we're testing ourselves that that that's me is what the season's about is. You put in a lot of work and now it's you know. Now it's about testing our game and where we're at with you know the best competition in the world and and. You, know for my heart sake and some of the other coaches and staff I. Hope we don't. Have to do that as much but. Just just to see the guys continue to fight to continue to believe, go pitch to pitch in and make them. Complete twenty-seven outs at the end of the day. That's really all we can ask. As a group of of coaches to our guys. Kind of cruising and you feel getting hits us was an a strike zone you debates in at eight off. I thought they were that they were. Okay. I thought we did a good job limited. strikeouts, but he stayed in the zone and I thought the balls that we hit were mainly poolside and when we did it was into their shift and and you'd like to get under that ball a little bit more. If we're going to go side not poolside on the ground, and if we're going to go on the ground, we gotta work it. You know the other way so while they weren't bad I think the the main thing we saw is is The night went on. I felt we got stronger as an offensive unit and that was good to see. Jason Angler on Fox sports. San Diego in Colorado following a padres thrilling eight seven win we're going to read your tech. Right now seven, zero, four, seven, zero starting to message with Acciari. We'll try to get through as many as we can. Six one nine grinds Mike Years when I see camp drive runs into hurt the padres. Yeah. He had a big hit in this game. Of course, Matt Kemp did that. Six one five I've never been this confident in Padre offense in my life we talked.

"Score says he gives up he gave up four runs but strong gave up that doubled Matt Kemp scoring to tack on those two runs Garrett Richards I'm totally with you after that Charlie Blackmon Homerun Gary Richards was nails until the sixth inning. Yes. He got yanked through ninety pitches tonight fifty nine for strikes but. Pitching, at coors field, we've seen what pitchers do. They're like got on Oh eric lower who gave up homerun after homer and after run it's where pitchers go to die and Garrett Richards held his own tonight and thinking about this win. Yes Kirby is off. He does not look right maybe he's not ready for the season he got into camp late maybe this is going a little too fast for him. He's not ready to go maybe something's wrong with them I don't know we're gonNA hear from Jay Tingler here coming up in a bit. I'm sure the question will be asked about Kirby Eights match drawn. He hasn't had it this year either maybe the same issues with him going on. But when you look at any game at coors field, no matter what if you win twenty one to twenty or one nothing? If you get out of there with a win. It doesn't matter what happened a win where force field you know it's comical. Is that the rockies entered tonight with Major League Baseball's Best Dra fewest runs allowed now they hadn't played, of course field all year. Combined runs podgy score eight times on ten hits the rockies seven runs at fourteen hits. San Diego did not commit narrower. The rockies had one winning Pitcher in Relief Craig Stamp Pitch well by the way tonight inning and a third scoreless bouncing back he moves to WANNA. Know drew pomeranz has been brilliant out of the bullpen. He's been the most reliable maybe the only. Reliable reliever at high leverage spots, his save is second year Wade Davis Way Davis of two outs of the basis empty. The ninth inning allowed to home runs want to teach junior to tie it later after a walk and an intentional walk Tommy Fam- lifts that three run home run off Davis. So the Closer Davis could not close the door on the padres is. Davis, falls to own one. He allowed four runs in two thirds of an inning and San Diego with a victory on either Saturday or Sunday now jim wins another series that would be three consecutive series wins to start the year. Remember they're scheduled to get the dodgers on Monday at Petco Park Eight, four, four, five, seven, thirteen, sixty, eight, four, four, five, seven, thirteen. Sixty. Our text line is just lit right now seven zero, four, seven, zero, start your message with X. we will get to these texts coming up in the second segment. Again, we'll talk some padres prospects as well with John, Nolan who has been the play by play voice in Fort Wayne the single I affiliate of the padres he will join us in about fifteen minutes. Or is this Joakim all right Joaquin he wants to talk some padres you ought shave for and Jim Russell thanks for calling him. Hey, but I think you guys have a great show by the way. Thanks man. Nice. Man. should we let the starting pitching like go further you know even with their pitch count getting higher and then I think the bullpen needs to figure quite a few things out. But thanks thanks for taking my call. Thank you for calling in. Here's the thing with the starters. I think the first turns through the rotation, right? We're in the middle of the second turn each starters now making their second appearance and you can tell they're being limited to ninety pitches. No one has thrown more than ninety one pictures that was donelson lament Chris Paddock is thrown. Eighty nine tonight is Jim just told you. We saw Richards go ninety pitches right now the limit is ninety pitches I expect to be extended roughly fifteen pitches for at least a good majority of these pictures. Air Richards coming off Tommy. John, we've heard the rains are off with Chris. Patrick. We've heard the rains are offered to Nelson Lament I. Think will be stretched beyond ninety pitches and when they are stretched beyond ninety pitches and when throwing well, they're gonNA work deeper into games but I think tonight, Jim Regardless of pitch count I think Richards was going to be relieved in that spot. He went single single walk on his way out. So you don't have a ton of confidence there. He's working through a lot. Let's see what For a third time in that spot. So I think ninety pitches laboring to outs. You try to get out of the inning with a fresh reliever and traumas unable to do it but there are going to be some nights where I think guys are given the ability to go than ninety pitches. One thing I I. Look at this game is a huge positive is crates damage bounceback really well, one one and a third yup, no runs strikeout. No walks I went through fifteen pitch is. I think he back wealth tonight. It's a nice positive sign to see him pitch well, and then Pomeranians has been your best pitcher out of the bullpen. To saves on the year. The Yankees of course they're gonNA give it to James Taylor for doing that most people most managers Kier lose winner loses their best guy and you say, listen you flip over your aces and if you get beat by inside straight will you had aces and I love the move because we were talking about it on Tuesday night why doesn't it seem and feel like J. Stiegler for these first couple of games here is treating the season like every game is a playoff series every every games a playoff game tonight with yanking curb Yates in the ninth inning to bring in drew. POMERANZ was a move that you do in the postseason and I absolutely loved it and it turned out could for the Padres, the obviously won the game and I think jailer should be credited and applauded for that who gets the ball the next time the padres are in the ninth inning with a one two or three run lead will be fascinating to watch. The Way POMERANZ has pitch we know about gates last year, but it's not last year anymore and your games into a sixty game season. That's it. Let's hear from Caesar sees you're on with John and Jim thanks for calling the wrap up show. Hey how's it going? Good man. Couple of things that was a great victory by a couple of things just naylor He Ain't gonNA get playing time. He's just not cutting sorry to say, but he can't hit it with this lineup is not going to get playing time and everybody have patience because once ours catcher start hitting things aren't go a lot better. They gotta hit tonight. They're also roared off the SNIDE started over twenty five. I. Think Naylor's can have opportunities. Now remember the padres are down a starter offensively and in the field and Eric hosmer because of this gastrointestinal intestinal issue right now, he's not even in Denver up but you're. Not. GonNa. Bahia is that you of to catchers and they're both playing in the same game? So he's to have some opportunities to play. He's still a young player. He did have a base it here. Tonight, he was one for four struck out in that big spot in the eighth inning. But I do think we'll have some early season opportunities. All right. We'll take a timeout more of your phone calls and texts on the other. Side our number tonight is the padres win eight seven in just a wild game. Wild Wacky game at coors field just like any other game there arbor eight, four, four, five, seven to thirteen, sixty or text line. We'll try to get to as many as we can. "But in this season, why not experiment? Maybe maybe there's an element of excitement that brings with the California Tiebreaker. That more people gravitate toward that and We'll see as I said a moment ago. I definitely think this is the year to experiment. Expand waves as possible. We're talking to play by play Voice of the Colorado Rockies drew Goodman and on that. Note I, I've kind of been saying this to drouet. This is a weird time. We might as well NBA might as well go march madness style. We may just do all these crazy things. See what sticks and what we throw away. The playoffs side of things for for baseball. We're going to stay with ten teams, did they? Did they miss an opportunity here? So we have tried to expand this because we've talked about expansion for awhile. Yeah and come expect to his. You know the fact that they never came to a full agreement. and. Therefore the season was implemented and some opportunities to the players standpoint. were lost they they do their eyes wide open. They knew what they were voted for and giving up. The opportunity for expanded playoffs money the playoffs, etc, they had their reasons why it seems like they they to be able to file a grievance and keep that card in their pocket I think it would have been really interesting expanded playoffs. It keeps more teams as we all know in it I always said in the past that the reason that they pour beer and champagne and clubhouses after a team clinches spot in the postseason. As opposed to the NBA and the NHL is because it really truly is hard to get there in in baseball, there are very few teams that are invited to the party. You know the NBA F sixteen in the NHL Sixteen. Even even in the NFL, we see five hundred teams on occasion. Make it to the postseason that that doesn't happen in baseball. I would have liked to have seen it this year. especially to see how it looks and and to keep more teams in it as opposed to you know on June twenty eighth. Your team is hopefully hopelessly out of it so. Yeah I I really I. Definitely think that would have been intriguing to have more teams than it at the you know, the the shorter format early in the play offs and You know maybe down the road. We'll say drew GONNA poll question up our with this sixty game stretch a lot of things you can throw out the window a lot of things we can expect more of the same from some of those great teams are the Rockies if you had to make a prediction or the rockies playoff team. Could be and here's why I. I liked it team that they're going to quit out there. Offensively.

"Piss off or not. What's your summary of how this started? And how will it end is the sort of still simmering and will it continued to until you're not can opt out? I Guess Yeah. It's kind of a web of different stuff but actually the the fact that we don't have any transactions talk about is part of it. Actually Nolan is certainly not pleased with the direction of the team at least in the immediate They they are up against a a payroll issue self-imposed payroll and that they have so they. They added nobody the major league level where the winter the only team in baseball. That didn't have a major league player. It was them in the cubs for awhile. And then the cubs finally signed way but The rockies were all wrong so so they're they're really like coming off with seventy one win team seventy one win season. They did nothing and that was something that no one are not frustrated about. But that's not all of it. There's all just some kind of interpersonal issue between him. And the General Manager Jeff that blew out in the open in January. It had kinda been simmering a little bit maybe since late last season and then all of a sudden was just everywhere Out in the open. And if I had to you know if I suppose if I had summarize it will quickly where we're at now I think is that The two of them are doing their best to just avoid. Avoid the awkwardness. And you know they sort of I don't I don't think it was an agreement between them but they just sort of mutually agreed to kind of talking about it for a while but it hasn't gone away. There's not a whole lot of it doesn't seem like there are a whole lot of avenues for them to even go at this point even if you consider any possible scenario you know the the general manager leads or they go fifty zero to start the season. There aren't even you every possibility. It's really difficult to see that knowing autos with this team through the length of contract now then You know I don't know though what that would mean any very immediate. It seems like Maracas. We're open to trading him you know basically over the last two months. I think they run into a lot of difficulty there. They were very demanding. And what what they wanted return and his contract is wants move. So they're they're just sort of long story short. They're kind of stock right now with each other. Do you think that this saga especially its public? Nature might affect the way that the team approaches its roster construction going into the rest of the season. I know that like their options to add are pretty limited now even if they suddenly had a change of heart but I know there was some talk when this detente was reached that the organization might be more open to adding talent as the season progresses. Do you think that that's sincere? Change in posture. Or are they looking at it as a way to just sort of make this go away get into the sort of progression of the regular season and then see? How Happier said Nolan? His one things are things are underway. I think they're Kinda just trying to make it go away moment. The you know when he when he. I'm just guessing here. I don't think it was Susan tension to sabotage them in any way but when he when he started talking about his his displeasure with his boss. It did sort of like if I was another general manager I would. I would assume that. Then at this point the rockies are motivated trade partner which kind of decreases their leverage a little. Bit when you start talking about trades with other teams. And maybe they're trying to regain some leverage by just kind of pushing it to the side right now and maybe they're just posturing that they're not especially motivated but they also you know. I mean I you know I have to sort of remind myself that this is this is their actual stance here. But the rockies legitimately think that their world series contenders. I don't I don't agree but they do think this and I think you know we extend that out a little bit you know. I think that they think a lot of the problems. Go Away if by Hsun or July. They're essentially playoff contenders. And then if they're not then they can revisit revisit a trade as a way to sort of then. Just skip to the next year. You know start building. They don't really do rebuild the the rockies better or worse they don't they never tear down completely so hang in the back of their minds and again this is speculative I think in the back of their mind if they had this sort of make a known our trade then they can immediately pivot they will forever stories guy. Let's build around him instead and go to the go toward the future but that is also problematic and a lot of different ways. But you know I think you know like you said. I think they're waiting seem okay. It comes from a lot of different ways of them looking at theirselves and that in part of that is that I mean they really think they. They did. They they were. They took the dodgers to hide breaking game. Twenty eighteen for the for the NFL West Division title. They really believe that they were. They're much more of that than on seventy one games last year. And that's where they're they're coming from going into this season at least inside their heads. Yes so we'll ask you about what's inside your head at the end of this interview. How many games you think the rockies could win but on that topic of the rockiest thinking that they could be a contender. There were those much-publicized comments A few weeks ago for rockies owner Dick Monfort it and I could not tell whether he was serious or not just reading at imprint. I don't know if it was an intonation thing. Us talking about how he had some stat. People interpolate prior seasons and they came up with ninety. Four wins is having a wins. The rockies would have this. I could not at all tell whether that was tongue-in-cheek or entirely serious but was it serious and if so how could they think that? So here's here's the situation. There's fun there's a fundraiser hitting mom. The owners need to take them off for years from Greeley Colorado which was like north of Denver away. Silicon meat packing town. It's where his business that he inherited from his dad. That's that was their headquarters so anyway. Every year he goes to Greeley and they hold a its charity breakfast thing. It's very low rent. There's it's not fancy in any way but it's a lot of people from a lot of people from Greeley who are a lot of his friends show up and it's Kinda like a they have an auction and he speaks so it was a friendly audience and unlike with on twitter and yeah or email no rockies owner has a has a habit of responding to emails but I think he was sort of half joking but within that there is certainly some truth again like they legitimately think that they're contending team now like specifically ninety four. I'm kind of taking that a little bit tongue in cheek. I can't imagine I cannot wrap my head around an analytics department. That ran like a significant number of simulations to come up with a solid number of ninety. Four that almost impossible but maybe one of those with like today. Here's ninety four and they were like. Hey let's check out about four but I I think to the larger point like you know they he. He truly believes that they're winning team. He wouldn't be the first person to fall in love with a ninetieth percentile outcome projection. We've all been guilty of that from time to time. I'm curious the rockies are sort of an odd organization in that. I think there's a perception that they're probably one of the last teams in baseball to be a little behind the curve when it comes to analytics and I'm curious what your perception of them is as a person who is with the team all the time. What is the role of sort of sabermetrics within the rockies organization? How behind the ball are they actually versus just the you know. They play baseball on the Moon. So that makes things harder for them but where where did they actually sit in terms of the front offices progression there? And how much is it? A factor of them being advanced perhaps not listen to or actually being behind the ball. When it comes to this stuff they have definitely been full to evolve in this area for a couple of reasons they just. They have been unwilling to invest in that area. They have more recently but their analytics department as it is is not especially big especially especially compared to other teams. But part of the reason you know. I don't think anybody nobody was sitting around chorus field being like we hate math or something you know. We don't believe in this. It really goes to to like a larger sort of issue with the team. And because you know like you mentioned they plan the moon. Well they sort of act like they live on the moon. Sometimes they're very insular t they don't you know they sorta do it their way and they're not real interested in in sort of anything that's happening. Outside of their bubble. This was something that the owner learned from his dad running packing business To just trust your own opinions and not not be influenced by outside factors so it's sort of like over the years gradually let them just trust the people who have always worked for them. You know they're general manager Jeff. He's he's been the general man. This is six years jam but he was with the team for a long time before that. And he's not even he's not especially old they just they keep people around forever. So when you when you just SORTA turn over year to year with the same people kind of you know. Just sorta lead you down a path that you've always been on and and that pass for them did not really include a lot of analytics now. They're not. They're not blind to these to these ideas. I mean they know they know what is or whatever but it's doesn't necessarily influence them very strongly and so at this point they are. They are definitely playing. Catch up and you know they. They have made strides in this area. A little bit. But there's still pretty far behind and it really goes. You know I think at some point really. It's just a matter of investment. They haven't chosen to make a very big investment in that area. Which is hard to you know to be honest. It's hard to stomach. I think for a lot of fans when you see that they you know for instance are willing to pay in Desmond seventy million dollars but they can't you know spend one million dollars on whatever I you know. Whatever the cost might be boost boost that area of research but in the end. It's it's really just a matter of how many people they have devoted to that area and they don't have very many. Yes so on that topic. I feel like I'm asking about player development. A lot in the season preview podcasts which might be because it's an area of particular interest to me but also think it's an area that a lot of teams are really revamping their approaches to and I don't know if the rockies are sort of as stuck in the mud as they seem to be in the past and I know that when I was working in my book Travis saw chick talked to at amount of you know and he talked about how he went to drive line and didn't really have the support or at least the wholehearted approval of the team or didn't feel like the team was offering that sort of insight..

Oh eight a sparkling one point six three walks per nine innings by their starters and an eye popping six point four wins above replacement by their pitching staff their starters accounting for five point three wins above replacement one win about replacement for their relievers the cardinals meanwhile treaded water on their way to a five hundred record at about league average bridge marks now. This isn't to say that the cardinals were dealing with some injuries Carlos. Martinez was shut down late in the year. I'll be effective role in the postseason but the cardinal's collectively posted a four point one eight. This year is a much different story as the cardinals pitching has been great and shows no signs of slowing down the cardinals also get the luxury of facing the Colorado rockies for three games before coming home from acid stand against Milwaukee in Washington and then wrapping up seven of their final ten games against the cubs that'd be Michael Walker against Chichi Gonzalez Tonight Hudson and sent to tell it tomorrow Michael Nicolas Melville on Thursday a matinee before the team heads home but I can imagine it will be a much different flight from Colorado to Saint Louis and the flight from the West Coast back on August the seventh after dropping a heartbreaker to one as the dodgers walked off the cardinals against you you guessed it eight sterling from Jack Flaherty Carlos Martinez coughing things up in the ninth cardinals pitching his carried them to this point and although twenty eighteen fifteen shares the fact that their adverts had a lead in the middle of September that they appear to potentially be in position to have next week. Things are much different different. The cardinals are executing. The pitching appears to be getting better and the cubs mirror more than one hundred fifteen cardinals than the twenty fifteen cubs. It's ironic. The cardinals haven't made up any ground on on the Atlanta braves over the last thirty days. They have been simply fantastic but that could be a story for the first round of the playoffs. The braves two point six seven starters starters. Era over the last month since the night of August is just in front of the cardinals two point six eight the only teams that are below three and are both half front better than the Cleveland Indians the cardinals bullpen has been fantastic as well but the execution and the management of the pen by Mike. Show Mike Maddox and Brian ever skirt the cardinals have the best bullpen era in the National League over the last month at three point two seven and second in baseball only to the Minnesota sort of twins offensively during this great stretch. We've seen the cardinals put up pretty good numbers as well as a team. They're batting average of two sixty. Nine is sixth best in major ager league baseball. They've posted a three fifty on base and a four forty five slugging percentage. So what comparisons can we draw from now to two thousand fifteen the last time the cardinals held the lead this large division at this time of year ironically. It was the cubs who put on a late season sprint in two thousand fifteen as the cardinals also played about five hundred baseball similar to what the cubs are doing this year. The colonels were fifty eight and fifty five through one hundred thirteen games this this year as they tried to chase down the Chicago cubs beginning with that series in Pittsburgh on the ninth of August back in two thousand and fifteen through one hundred thirteen eighteen games. The cardinals were seventy three and forty. The cubs were sixty five and forty eight over the next thirty games. The cardinals went sixteen and fourteen over the same stretch. The cubs went twenty one and eleven so they did start to close the gap through the first nine games of September the mark mark that we've reached already this year the cardinals have gone six and three in two thousand fifteen the cardinals went three and six the cubs have gone four and fourth through the start of September this year sure they went seven and two back in two thousand fifteen over the entire month of September and October. The cardinals played just under five hundred baseball fifteen and sixteen and the cubs twenty three and thirty nine so what was different in twenty fifteen and what will be the difference this year. The answer is simple. The answer is pitching. Remember all those numbers I just rattled off as how the cardinals pitching has fared since they started their run of twenty three wins and thirty games back in the first week of August there at the top of every category in major league baseball the cubs are at the top of every category Major League Baseball back in Twenty fifteen and and it was their pitching that carried them to ninety seven wins in the National League Championship series it was their pitching that closed the gap from an eight-game deficit the first week of August two just a three-game deficit behind the cardinals as the season wrapped up and they headed to Pittsburgh to win a wildcard game and then eventually knocked the cardinals often four games in the National League divisional series. I'll take you back to September of two thousand fifteen the Chicago cubs lead baseball on almost every pitching category a league best two.

"Rockies. Pitching came up big for the Rockies of the marathon wildcard game against the cubs. And it could be a big storyline. Heading into the game of the National League divisional series with Milwaukee Brewers coach Craig counsel says that he's going to the bullpen approach on the mound for tonight's first game. He's by black says, they'll be ready for whom ever the brewers put on the hill. I think. You know will will adhere to rule number one. Which is ready for anything? Which are guys will be. Which ever way they start this game. We'll be ready for any number of pitchers might that might come our way. We've probably faced most of them at some point solution history. I think the the ultimate challenges. Just good advance. Play baseball have a good approach against any. So I think that's the that's the thing that, you know, we'll stand out for us. Come to the ballpark tomorrow. Is whoever that might be? You know, we know those pictures we've faced. Let's let's do what we do. Rockies of the Burs face off in Milwaukee today. Our coverage begins to hear the home team. Call on KOA NewsRadio three oh seven. Well, let's get into those pitching decisions with our own ace, Mike rice, so Mike. What is this pitching by lazy? Susan how does that? Well, I mean, they're they're going to start a pitcher. And we don't know who it is yet because Craig counsel hasn't said, and then they're going to try and piecemeal things together much like we've seen the Rockies. Do we saw them do that? Really it turned into that kind of outing Saturday against the nationals when John gray only went two innings. So you hope you get inning and two thirds or two innings or two plus innings out of a guy in Craig counselors said look these outings are probably not going to be short in an ideal world, they wanna use guys to three maybe three plus innings if they can that puts the owners, I think on the Rockies lineup. I mean, this is a team that can hit Trevor story has gone crazy against the brewers this year. It's going to be interesting to see how it works out. Because it sounds like Craig counsel is committed to something like this through the series. I think that's going to be interesting. It's it's one thing to do it in a one off, but his pitchers are healthy. And he's starting the series that way, which I think is really interesting. Do you think that's impacted because they had to play the wild card games? This. This is the philosophy arrest. The rays have done this the as tried it last night yet not work for that didn't work, and and what's interesting too. Is that, you know, the Rockies tried, you know, the whole bridge reliever thing a few years ago, and they were laughed out of baseball. Really? And now we see teams doing this in the playoffs in, you know, supposedly something something that's revolutionary, right? I mean, it's kind of a joke the hypocrisy of it it might work. And and I I think it's gutsy to try. But to your question Marty. I don't think it's that because Craig counsel said yesterday, this is a rested team with the two days off. I mean, it was a one game tiebreaker. So they were pitching one guy. They weren't using three starters in that game. So they have. Plenty of guys who could be available. I mean GIO Gonzalez is a starter. Chase a Anderson has been a starter. Wade Miley met starting rotation. They've got bona fide sort of traditional starting pitchers. They're just looking to go to in a different direction. So you think council if there's a guy that's particularly hot. He's got his stuff. You'll just leave them alone. I think to a certain degree. I mean, a lot of those relievers aren't stretched out long enough to be able to go three four five innings. That's not what they would look to. I mean when you have a bullpen day. You're hoping to get probably two innings out of a guy if you can maybe if the match up in the third inning that he would be scheduled to pitch is a left on left. You keep them in for that. I better than make a change or something like that. But you're not expecting any of those guys to go four or five innings. And so the strategies you heard butt-black allude to in his comments is is good at bats. Just being you gotta be you. Gotta be smart you and you got to be ready to face anybody. Look this is a good Rockies lineup. We know that they've had some issues they've had some issues offense. But you know, what they can also pitch, and I would expect in Tonio sends a tell it to be. To be ready, and we know in the playoffs. Hooks are short for pitchers anyway, so sends it could give them five maybe five plus six. "We'll come back to usmc baseball podcast third segment of the day today on a wednesday as we are getting through the middle of the week segment we're going to talk about more yankees more and more yankees and the rockies to go through on the rockies or they are another hot team in the league there's a couple of teams right now in the league as as we go through the twins the twins win five in a row in ickies one seven room in the rockies one six zero so look look at them rockies actually surprising looking at their runner fragile you think with the six games over five hundred you have a plus runner votes actually minus eight right now on this young season but they'll still turn around and hit the ball too much as far as rockies run through their team leaders as we come close to the forty game mark on the season but they they're not on that old door behind the behind the diamondbacks they're waiting for any kind of slip and release the two teams the rockies diamondbacks that play in that wild wild wild card game in yes last year that was in arizona the them squeak that went out after their pitcher robbie ray got a triple the knocked in a couple of runs and took the lead for the bax but as far as the rockies looking pretty good right now it's the pitching is actually pretty good chad it's leading the team with two five era those kyle freeland john gray gray still trying to get that era down he got roughed up in a start a few weeks ago but pitched while yesterday so like that.
